(urgent!!) How to revert Advanced Security settings?

Question: (urgent!!) How to revert Advanced Security settings?

Hey! I was trying to follow this guide
Stop/Prevent Windows 7 From Deleting Thumbnail Cache

But things went horribly wrong and it ended up like this:

Is there a way I can revert it to default values? I'm really scared! (I'm using Windows 8.1) Needless to say my thumbnails are resetting every time I access a folder

Preferred Solution: (urgent!!) How to revert Advanced Security settings?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: (urgent!!) How to revert Advanced Security settings?

Oh well I fixed it. I don't know how I did it though as I wasn't able to edit permissions and whatnot. I actually have no clue, I kept closing and reopening the that Window because I was nervous but it just appeared like it was before. No clue actually

Firefox is a supremely configurable browser with an array of useful settings, but many are so deeply buried in about:config that you may never even realize they exist.

ConfigFox is a free portable tool for Windows which makes it easier to view and manage Firefox?s more advanced privacy and security-related options.

The program first acts as a GUI for your settings, presenting them in a tree with the following categories: Startup, Auto Updates, Privacy, Location bar/ search/ auto suggestions/ history, Cache, SSL/ OCSP/ Certs/ Encryption/ http, Plugins, Media/ Camera/ Mic, JavaScript & DOM, Leaks/ fingerprinting/ security/ dev tools, and Tweaks.

Expanding any category gives you a list of possible options, and expanding these shows you the name of the official Firefox setting (so the program?s ?Disable browser auto update? directly relates to the Firefox setting app.update.enabled).

Every category and setting has a checkbox you can use to enable or disable it.

Most options are fairly obvious (?Disable camera?), but others do require some background knowledge (?Enable OCSP Stapling?).

If you?re unsure what something means, right-click the relevant Firefox setting, select Search Online and a web browser window opens with any matches.

Once you?re finished, the Save option saves your new settings to a Users.js file in your user profile (it won?t open an existing Users.js, so if you have one already then we?d back that up first). Restart Firefox and... Read more

We are in the process of planning the deployment of ATA for the 90 day eval.
Prior to this install we filtered the Event IDs being sent to our siem environment and have a subset of security audit policy settings enabled.
Which advanced security audit policy settings do we need enabled for ATA?
If possible, can you please provide a list of the specific Event IDs we need to be logging to our SIEM and forwarded to ATA?

Apologies if this topic has previously been discussed, but my search didn't yield helpful results.

In attempting (unsuccessfully) to install a citrix plugin for remote desktop, I'm discovering that advanced security settings for Program Files are screwed up, but I am unable to adjust them. I am currently logged in as administrator and user account control settings are set to "never notify". Please see the attached screenshot. Thanks in advance.

What is the image you posted supposed to show? I don't see anything wrong. It's normal for Trusted Install to own the operating system directory trees like Program Files, Program Data, Windows, etc.

Your looks the same as mine:

The issue is fairly minor, and has to do with the Windows Taskbar being unable to go back to original settings. I have attached a screenshot of two accounts on my Windows XP laptop, one has had the taskbar changed with Advanced System Care, the other hasn't. I cannot revert the account with the modified taskbar to be of the original width. How do I reset the taskbar to default settings? I've already tried Control Panel>Display>Windows XP Default, and right-clicking on the taskbar to change taskbar settings brings up no option to reset to defaults or to change the width of the taskbar button.

This will probably be of no use to anyone, but the machine in question is an Acer Aspire 3003WLC with 256MB RAM and a 1.8Ghz AMD Mobile Sempron. It's running Windows XP Home Edition with service pack 3 installed, and I'm using Advanced System Care 5.0

Apologies - the Urgent in this is only because I'm unsure whether any action may need to be done before I close down in about 6 hours or so.

Basically my problem began in Picasa 3 where I watched a short vid then decided to change the filename. That done I closed the preview & went back to the main program where I discovered that Picasa had somehow decided I wanted the entire folder of images renamed so it has worked through the 500+ images and renamed each one as Filename001, Filename002, Filename003 and so on which as you can appreciate is now causing somewhat of a major headache for me. It would take me a good few hours I would rarely have to go through and rename each one manually, so my question basically is - is there any method or program that can undo the action as I can't find any means of doing so from within Picasa. All other options I've found in my searches are mainly to achieve pretty much the same i.e. bulk rename as Name1, Name2 etc so are of little help.

Anyone any suggestions what else I could try?

Answer:Urgent help needed - how to revert a bulk image name process?

I assume you don't have a Backup to fall back on. I use these two bulk renaming tools. You can see if they help. This is drop dead simple to use -

I have a Gigabyte board and an xp1800 processor, by default when I turn pc on it reports the chip as an 1150 mhz. I can then crank it up in the bios to 1550(ish) correct settings for an xp1800. But every time I reboot the pc it drops back down to 1150 mhz.

I cant see that it is anything wrong with my BIOS battery, as my windows clock never loses a second.

Any ideas?

BTW I am using a 250watt psu as oppose to 300, could this be the cause?

Dear all,
I am in a trouble with Advanced Power Setting on Windows 10.
There are limited options only when I go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Change advanced power settings in particular Intel (R) Dynamic Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings.
For some of the missing options I followed this page and fixed:
However I could not add Intel (R) Dynamic Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings in advanced power settings even though followed these links:

I have just returned a faulty Graphics Card to the supplier and am waiting for a replacement. In the meantime I am using the motherboards monitor output. This has been working fine except for the aspect ratio which though annoying was adequate. Now my son has tried to rectify this and i have lost my picture. He said he disabled the display adaptor. I now get the boot screens and the Windows page then it goes black. I believe the computer has booted up correctly but i cant enable the display without a picture. I am quite a novice so as simple as possible answers would be appreciated.

Answer:how to revert to old display settings

Ig he disabled it, you need to restore it. When the computer first boots up, look at the screen and note which key you need to hit to enter the BIOS setup. When you get into the bios, look for the setting related to onboard video and if it's disabled, enable it. Save the settings and exit. Keep the kid off the computer.

My PC was fine really, but then i accidently change the display graphics settings, and now I find that computer gets as far as the WIndows XP Logo on start up and then a hanging black screen occurs, even though windows has definately loaded up and is running in the background (the keyboard and mouse are functioning, altho they're not visible).

I want to try to revert the display setting back to how they were before. For some reason , It wont boot in safe mode now either! when i click on Boot in safe mode after F8, it just comes up with a list of about 20 different random directories , and then nothing else happens!:

etc etc.

please advise How I can get into safe mode or manage to visibly see windows to revert my graphic display settings back to default.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Answer:How can I revert Graphic Display settings?

Try this:

1. shut down your computer & unplug the power cord from the back
2. open the computer and safely remove the graphics card (there will be a little clip you need to push to remove so be careful)
3. wait around 2 minutes
4. insert the card again and boot.

can you load windows now?
hope this helps! if not write back!

As the title suggests, every time I restart or shutdown and log back on, a lot, if not all of my changed settings are reverted. About 5 weeks back, I ran into some virus trouble that I fixed, or so I thought. Most of the symptoms vanished when I cleaned the mess up, except this one. It's not a huge deal, bt any means but it is becoming *very* annoying to have to rejigger everything back into it's proper place.

She has gone into Settings and changed the pixels to 1152 X 864 and reboots, but it comes back bigger than life and when she goes back to display settings it is set at 640 X 480 pixels, and the color set at 8.... what's up?

Using XPPro, I'll open a folder expecting to see a list with details for files contained in the folder. Instead I see icons.

Sometimes in Explorer I expect to see previously selected views only to see default views.

And so on. This make me think that some in the Registry, a specific number of display settings are allowed and when you go beyond that number the newest setting is stored and the earliest setting returns to default.

True? If so, how do I increase the number.

Thanks in advance, Joe

I have been using a Logitech "Comfort laser" wireless keyboard and mouse for years. Recently the mouse has been acting up, so I purchased a Logitech M505 wireless mouse (original replacement parts are NOT available from Logitech!) in case it failed completely. Yesterday that happenned. After I installed the new mouse receiver (USB, not PS2 like the original) I discovered that everytime I reboot the "swap buttons"  feature (I nust use my left hand as my right hand no longer works) has reset. How do I get the mouse buttons to be properly left-hand oriented when I turn on my computer?I do click "APPLY" after setting the mouse up. I have tried both the windows mouse setup and Logitech's mouseware/Setpoint setups. I found I actually need both because I also usr a Remote Wonder 2 from ATI and I need it's mouse click buttons to remain reversed as well.Any thought would be appreciated,Eric T.

Current OS running? Download Mike Lin's Startup CPL. Click on Standalone EXE Version(34 kb). After downloading(folder or desktop), extract the file and open(run) the program. Look for any "logitech files only" and uncheck. Click Apply then Exit. If it did'nt work, uninstall and install the driver or update latest driver for mouse(if any).

I have searched for a long time for the solution to a problem I have been having, but the related posts are all about 2 years old. In January I bought a new computer and configured it specifically for music production... a dedicated DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) running WinXP 32 bit, sp2. I set my display settings to Windows Classic and set the computer to not display anything fancy other than smooth edged fonts. I turned all system sounds off so nothing would beep while recording. I stopped all non-Microsoft services and startup tasks via msconfig, freeing up the majority of my memory for use with the high demands of audio processing.

This configuration worked for about a month until either the machine automatically downloaded a Windows Update or I installed Windows Media Player 10. (My issue may not be the result of either of those things though.) Now, every time I reboot or shutdown and power the computer back on, the display settings revert to the XP baby blue task bar, the sounds come back on, and under My Computer - Properties -> Advanced Tab -> Performance Settings, the check box next to "Use visual styles on windows and buttons" is checked.

Any ideas on what's going on?

With previous versions of windows that I have used (2000, XP & Seven) settings never changed after an update, but after Win10 updates, I am finding every computer has its network settings reset to "password protected sharing turned on". When this happens, the DCM wont talk to the Kiosks, or the PCC, RIP, and Lab workstations (which also won't talk to each other). While the Lab computers can simply have their settings changed on the fly, I have to disable the turnkey systems by removing their hardlock keys so that the software doesn't start, then change the network settings then shut it down and reinsert the hardlock key and repeat the procedure for all the Kiosks and control computers before rebooting the entire system. It takes about about 60-90 minutes to get up and running after a Win 10 update.

Is there any thing I can to do stop this from happening?

DCM = Digital Control Module, a server for the Kiosks
PCC = Printer Control Computer
RIP = Raw Image Processor, a computer that runs a commercial photo printer

I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S431, that orginally came with Windows 7. I upgrade to Windows 10 and it  has been over a month - I don't see an option to revert back to Windows 7. I tried to download Windows 7 from Microsoft and gave them my Windows 7 product key that came with my laptop but I got a message saying I need to refer to the manufacturer.  My laptop came with a partition called "Lenovo_Recovery". How do I use this and what is it for? Can I use this to get back to Windows 7? Thanks for your help!

Answer:Thinkpad S431 - How to revert to factory settings?

I don't know much about that model, but can you try to Power On and keep pressed the F11 button to see if the recovery meny shows up.
Please remember to backup everything.

Alright, so get this: if I try and change the brightness settings in the Nvidia control panel, after moving the slider to darker or lighter, the screen will immediately adjust back to a standard brightness. This happens in games too. I'll find an area too dark and change the in game brightness and bam, it just reverts back. The thing is, the slider doesn't jump back or anything, the computer just adapts the new brightness so that it looks like the standard. Here are a couple of screenshots to visualize my rambling. Notice the gamma settings and the fact that regardless of which setting I chose, the screenshot brightness is literally exactly the same. This is not a monitor issue because 1) I've turned off all adaptive measures on my TV and 2) those are screenshots, they would not display the monitor settings.

Or, did you upgrade it from a prior OS to Win10?This is important as the recovery/reset method is different for the two situations. We can proceed when you provide the answers.

Well, probably not at random, because there has to be a reason.
Lenovo S510p Touch, Windows 8.1, Synaptics TouchPad V7.5, Driver version dated May 17, 2013. Microsoft Office 10 and no oddball software installed.
I changed the touchpad settings to ENABLE vertical scrolling and DISABLE the edge swipes function that causes the hideous Windows popups if you swipe from the left edge. Made the settings as shown in image at the bottom.
The problem is the settings revert to the defaults after a time. It's a pain to reset things several times a day. Can't find anything on the Lenovo site specific to this. Looked at the Synaptics site and they say there's probably another device driver that causes the reset. I tried disabling the touchscreen, but no help there. Too inexperienced (i.e.dumb) to know what else to try.
Ideas? Thanks!

I signed up for a DNS service a while back. When I stopped using their service I removed their DNS entry from the ipv4 settings and considered it done (this was all they stated for install/uninstall, just update the DNS in ipv4)

At random, the PC will revert back to their DNS server. I have no virus (Malewarebytes Pro), my hosts file is empty. The company has zero idea how to fix this problem and it's like listening to a broken record (19 emails back/forth) with their tech support.

Here's what I've done:

1) Removed it from ipv4 settings manually and reset to Obtain DNS Automatically
2) Open cmd as admin and ran the following sequence:
ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset

3) Reboot

On reboot, everything is normal, anywhere from 24 hours to 30 DAYS later it automatically reverts back to their DNS servers. I am on a .edu domain. I do not have access to the router, but I never modified anything in the router. Can anyone please provide a suggestion as to why my PC keeps reverting to their DNS servers?

Answer:ipv4 settings revert automatically, how can I stop this?

So the ipconfig /flushdns command isn't working either? Sounds like this DNS server messed with the host file or something.

The following link shows more methods for flushing the DNS.

Our facility has deployed whole hard disk encryption to all laptops.  This program initiates a preboot login screen.  Customers on Docking stations would like that preboot authentication screen to appear on their external displays. I have update their BIOS, installed the latest Nvidia drivers and set their bios from "Nvidia Optimum" to "Discreet"Then I set the display to "dock 1"Press F10, save, reboot and everthing works. Customer removes laptop from docking station and brings it home.  There is no docking station at home so the laptop's LCD is all there is. Customer returns with laptop to work in the morning, drops it in the docking station and boots up.  The preboot screen is still on the laptop.  The end result is the BIOS has to be accessed every morning to make it boot to the external display. What is changing the BIOS back from what I set it to?  How do I force it to stick?

Hello there, everyone.

My friend is having some problems with his internet, and unfortunately he's blaming me since I was at his house using it. Anyway, I tried to tell him over the phone to do a ipconfig release/renew combo, but he says nothing comes up. He advocates on the fact he's also tried to unplug his modem and plug it back in and stuff. I'm going to be going over there tomorrow after work and I was curious if anyone knew any other methods for releasing and renewing an IP address for broadband (I'm pretty sure it's static). I would enter it in manually but I don't know what his subnet masks, dns servers or IP combos are.

Thanks in advance.

Hey all, I have a W520 with a Nvidia quadro 2000m. I have a 2nd monitor connected with a native resolution of 1366x768 which I use to Extend my desktop. The main monitor is my laptops screen which has 1920x1080. Every time I reboot my computer I can see the windows logon screen and I still have the high resolution on my main laptop screen for a few seconds. After that the 2nd monitor connected switches on and my main laptop monitor switches back to the native 1366x768 resolution from the 2nd monitor and also it doesn't extend but clone my desktop. I have to manually correct it in the Nvidia control panel every time I boot. I installed the newest Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia site without result. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:W520 Dual display settings revert to low resolution in win logon

It seems the display setting are not getting save.
You may check with creating the different user account and if the issue persist then update the BIOS

I know you folks must have heard this one already.

When I try to customize my font size display settings (see attached), they revert back to default after a reboot.

I did a fresh install of Win 10, and this was the first thing I checked, just to make sure nothing was interfering with it.

I hoping there is some way to deal with this, even maybe a third party tool?

Answer:Windows 10 font size display settings revert back

It came along with the latest roll out. Only way to make it permanent is to use the Registry edit.

Hello. I know how to use 'Change Only the Text Size' (in the Control Panel's Display applet) to make certain elements larger and/or bolder, and this works fine on one of my 2 PCs. But on the other, the setting lasts only for the current session. At each reboot they're all back to unbolded 9pt, which for me is so small and faint it's almost comically useless.

Both PCs are running Win 10 Pro, both are recent (though non-identical) Dell desktops, and both are used for very similar -- and mundane -- tasks. What on earth could be making one of them lose its settings at each boot?

Note: This isn't a case of the settings being grayed out. I know the drill there -- I don't have a custom scaling level set.

Many thanks for any clues.

Thank you so much for these tutorials that are posted on this site, there a great help. I have a nagging thought, and it is my hope that someone can put it to rest. Is it possible that sometimes, Vista or even browsers of any kind can revert back, say... after a modification is made to the registry? Lets use one of my favorites... 35. Change the Maximum Download Sessions in Internet Explorer or all Browsers, I would think not, for it would defeat the whole purpose of the tweak. But sense I'm a crawling baby in the world of computers, I had to ask.

Answer:Can Vista or browsers revert back to default settings after a shutdown.

Welcome Todd,

It would be real easy to give a simple yes or no, but that may not be the correct answer in every situation. I never thought of that scenario and never had a problem, but why take a chance. Download and use this to make an image of your Hard Drive, in the event of the situation that you mentioned ocurring or something worse, you have the image to fall back on.

Free Backup Software: Paragon Backup & Recovery Free Edition - Overview

Keep it up to date and you will always have a good image to fall back on, regarless of the problem.

I've maintained an XAMPP localhost on my machine for web development for years and never had any real problem with it. Fairly recently (within the last two or three months, I believe), the services for both Apache and MySQL always revert to a Startup Type of Manual on reboot. Each time, I dutifully go in and reset the Startup Type to Automatic and start the services. Everything is fine until the next reboot. Then, I find that neither Apache nor MySQL are running because the Startup Type has reverted to Manual. So, I do the same thing all over again. I must have reset the two services to Automatic at least a thousand times. They always revert to Manual.

This has never happened before. Is there a way:

To prevent them from reverting to Manual, effectively making Automatic "stick" orFailing that, write a batch file to circumvent whatever Microsoft has done and reset the Startup Type on reboot?

I just know that the Microsoft software engineers spend many a sleepless night figuring out new and creative ways to make Windows less usable and more inefficient. Aparently, they strike again!

I've switched my laptop to safe mode so I can run a virus checker but now I can't log onto my machine. In safe mode my machine will not recognise my logon password that I normally use to connect both to mainframe and as a laptop.

I change to safe mode by Running msconfig, then selecting safe mode.

I've tried hitting F8 and selecting normal mode but it just keeps reverting to safe mode.

My systems guys are saying they cannot get my machine out of safe mode as there was no logon password loaded on my original machine build???

Can anyone advise me how I can restore normal mode before my systems guys wipe my C drive and start re-building my machine. Urgent help would be very much appreciated!

Answer:Windows XP Safe Mode - How do I revert to Norma Mode - URGENT HELP PLS!!

Hi Neil, Robert here, ok just a couple of questions to clarify things a bit:
1. are you able to get to your desktop in safe mode then get into your start menu and typing in the run menu the "msconfig.exe" option? (Basically backtracking what you did before the incident)

2. If not have you tried to boot back up to the F8 list and select the "boot up last known good configuration...etc" ...something like that.. option?

But more importantly this question comes to mind, what made it necessary to boot into safe mode on your desktop just to do a virus scan? But most importantly, was there anything else that you may have done during the time of this incident or immediately beforehand that might have otherwise caused your angst? I am simply trying to get a better understanding of what exactly happened as this will better determine a possible solution than to just proceed to an extreme one ie. reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows on your laptop. Let me know how it goes, if not, you can email me or post your questions if you have any problems at all. Good luck, Neil! =)

Windows 10 has messed up a lot of things that I just don't want to deal with. I'm just a little home user for fun and games and googling and I don't see where 10 is anything more than different. I'm supposed to have 30 days to restore 7 if I choose, but that option doesn't appear where it should. When I try reading so many posts and suggestions, including google articles, I don't understand all the rhetoric.

I also have had a problem with my (former) admin password. The password that I wrote down isn't working (??!!) and I seem to be doomed in limbo between 10 and 7 without it or being able to reset it. My stomach hurts.

I just want the simplest possible fix to all my woes. Please help.......

Answer:I cant revert to Win 7. Option is not in the System/Security screen

Well, dang! I FINALLY found my administrator user by going to Task Manager and selecting 'switch user' (forgot about that). So I found my other account where I can control things, and everything was there. This deal where Windows 10 seems to default to another user is for the birds. Lots of people seem to be struggling with this.

What do you think of Vipre as a replacement for Security Essentials for Vista```What are you using``` Thanks RichardMod Edit...Moved to General Security from Vista ~~boopme

Answer:Vipre advanced security to replace security essentials

VIPRE Anti-virus, previously owned by GFI, is now developed by ThreatTrack Security Inc. but it was originally introduced in May 2010 by Sunbelt of the early pioneers in anti-malware protection with an outstanding reputation for years. Counterspy was officially discontinued a year later and customers were offered the option to switch to VIPRE Anti-virus previously owned by GFI but now developed by ThreatTrack Security Inc. As with most security vendors, existing web site links were redirected to the new product.I have never personally used VIPRE. I have read it that it's blocking of malicious downloads was only adequate and that it's zero-day malware detection was below average. Generally if you're dealing with zero-day malware it's unlikely most anti-virus testing is going to detect anything since it takes time for new malware to be reported, samples collected, analyzed, and tested by anti-virus researchers before they can add a new threat to database definitions. The researchers at ThreatTrack Security need to show some improvement in these areas.

Hello experts!

I have a Win 7 Pro 64 bit machine that overnight when unattended will lose its com ports.

They are still available and have no conflicts or issues in device manager, but the serial ports stop receiving data through them.

I have a weighing device connected to each com port that constantly streams serial data through them. Some time overnight they stop responding and the only fix is a full reboot.

I am using a Moxa 1410 USB powered 4 port RS232 to extend beyond the inbuilt ports.

It is not the Moxa, but the fault seems to lie in the Advances Settings for COMX. In this screen you can use the drop down and assign it to a different com port. In Device manager it says it is com 5, 6, 7 & 8 but in Advanced settings the dropdown gets changed by Windows.

Windows OS is reassigning the com ports on its own.

How can I registry hack it, so it is impossible for Windows to mess with the settings on its own?

Any insight appreciated.

I am using a notebook that came with Windows 7 and upgraded to Windows 10. I noticed this problem 6 months ago (before upgrading to Windows 10), but it was not causing a problem, so I ignored it until now.
I am trying to switch to other DNS name servers. I set up the new DNS server addresses in the TCP/IPv4 properties, but they were not working. Checking the advances setting, under the DNS tab, I noticed that there is a long set of addresses (from IPconfig it seems to be 8) on the first line in DNS server addresses box. (See image. Note - the bottom two addresses had come over from what I had set up in the TCP/IPv4 properties).
I can not remove this series of addresses. The remove button is not greyed out, but nothing happens when I click it.
Same with editing it (nothing happens when I click Edit).
I can add addresses, edit added addresses and remove added addresses.
I can also move the top line down, but when I click "OK" nothing happens. To close the dialog box I must click Cancel.
If I open the advanced dialog box and do not click the DNS tab, I can close the dialog box by clicking OK, but once I open the DNS tab, clicking OK will not longer work. Even if I go back to the IP Settings tab, clicking OK will switch it to the DNS tab, but will not close it.
Anyone have an idea how I can reset this? Or remove this top line of addresses?

Answer:Advanced TCP/IP Settings, DNS tab, Can't click OK

OK, I figured this out myself. But in case someone else has the problem, here is the solution I figured out.
The problem was the GUI interface was locking up or not responding correctly, so I figured I had to find a manual way to change (or erase) the DNS servers that were blocking things up. I figured there was probably a way via the command prompt, and in fact, that is how we solved things.
I started an admin session of the command prompt (Win+X - Command prompt (admin))
Then I ran the netsh utility (typed netsh).
From the netsh command prompt I typed:
"interface ip set dnsservers "Wireless Network Connection" source=dhcp"
That did the trick. I immediately checked the settings and sure enough the long string of DNS servers was gone.
BTW, "Wireless Network Connection" was the connection I was having trouble with. This told netsh to switch the DNS server names for that connection back to selecting the DNSservers automatically.
I could also replaced "source=dhcp" with "static" (Note this is not a valid DNS server) to have it set to that DNS Server. Or I can now go in and change it manually.
Problem solved!

Does anyone know about the "Graphics Hardware Acceleration"? (system icon/performance tab/graphics button). I can't seem to set it at full. Everytime I do so the system does not boot, all you see is a black screen. I have to bootup into safe mode and move the lever back to the middle position. What does this mean and how can I set it to the full position. I have a Compaq Presario, Windows 98.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Advanced Graphics Settings

This setting is to fix errors due to system incompatibility.

Most often it means that your motherboard cannot keep up with your video card. Sometimes it means that your video card is going bad.

Is this a new card you have installed?

An acquaintance gave me the link to your answer to a specific question I had asked him, namely 'how do I make an advanced setting for COM1 serial port when I get a message saying that I need write privilege in the registry for 'this device'. I am the administrator on my machine and I have a label printer hooked up to COM1 on a WIN2k system and need to change a setting I believe it has regarding a FIFO buffer. I also have an XP system on another machine and always get the same impediments as I do on WIN2k. I can't get into that advanced setting when I click the 'Advanced' button in the COM1 port settings window.

But when I tried your suggested solution, adding values into the registry path "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
system\current......pnp0501\1\Device Parameters" (trying to add a binary value into the right pane for the above branch) I just get a message saying "Cannot create value: Error writing to the registry". Foiled again!
Same thing happens, by the way, if I try this on my XP machine. Do administrators get no respect?

Answer:COM1 advanced settings

Partially solved: Right-clicking registry key gives 'permissions' option on XP but not on Win2k. Giving permissions to 'everyone' on the XP allowed me to put new values into right pane of Device Parameters key. I put the values in suggested by The Oracle and they worked. I was able to get into Advanced settings for COM1 port. But how do I set those registry permissions in Win2k where my device is?

When I right click (for instance) the sound icon in system tray it should say "Open volume mixer" and 3 other options below that. I was messing with the advanced windows appearance settings and now mine says "Open volume M" and there is no other space for the rest of the word. Same with "safely remove har" (for hardware) I have tried for days and can't get it to show the whole word. Do you know what setting this is? I know it's in advanced window appearance settings. Can't find it

Answer:Advanced appearance settings

It sounds like you've messed with the settings in the Windows settings and appearance Advanced properties (get to it by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Personalize"

Which setting it is, I have no idea. But some experimentation should reveal it to you.

I am running Windows 10 Tech preview in VMware Player. I can't seem to find any way to change things like the icon, messagebox etc fonts. This is what I have been using in everything since W95 as far as I can remember:However I can't seem to locate such a thing in W10 build 10130, just a way of changing font size only. I like to be able to set the actual font family for icons in Windows Explorer and message boxes. Is this sort of thing removed or just buried somewhere?

Answer:Advanced appearance settings

I think they removed it. First thing I wanted to do was make the window borders wider on Windows 10 and that was exactly the Appearance Dialog I was looking for, but I wasn't able to find it.I can't seem to find it in Windows 8, now that I look for it. All it has is a size selection.Pretty dumb, To be honest. It might be possible to find the locations in the registry that would be changed and manually adjust the settings- assuming they aren't doing something dumb like hard-coding the fonts used.

Hi. I have a GIGABYTE Technology 54 Mbps Wireless Router. It works really well and I am happy with it.

... However...

I want it to be a secured connection for just my flatmate's and my computers to access. It says that it has WPA, 64/128-bit WEP encryption, SPI firewall and URL blocking. However, the manual does not give me clear instructions on how to use these functions.

Actually, someone set it up for me initially. Since I live in Taiwan and my flatmate was home when they installed it, everything was done in Chinese. I am entirely unclear how to secure the connection at this time. To make matters a little more complicated, I don't have the manual (or if I do it is still in a box somewhere)... we just moved.

I am not a computer idiot but in reading posts trying to find some information in these forums I didn't understand any of it. Most of this technology came into common use while I have been out of the States (Yes, I'm American.) and in either Africa... where the internet is still an office/school/interesting but not a common thing... or in Asia where everybody knows it but it is in Chinese so I am still clueless.

Ahem, what I mean to say is... any assistance needs to be in SIMPLE steps and clear, straightforward English.

Anyone interested in tutoring? TIA

Recently a game running on Steam, crashed the pc to the desktop. I wanted to create a dumpfile to try and determine the reason for the crash. I am an administrator and seem to have permissions to change system settings. However, when I attempt to create a dumpfile via Control Panel>System and Security> System>Advanced System Settings>StartUp and Recovery> Settings --, the system will allow me to enter values in the various fields eg "Write debugging information" however any changes I make are not saved and the values revert to the original values.

I only wanted to create a small dump file and there is large capacity on the primary drive, so it doesn't seem to be a space issue.

I am not sure if particular permissions are required or some other software maybe controlling the "Startup and Recovery" processes ?

I don't seem to have this problem on another machine running Win 7 - Home Premium 64 bit? Any clues would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Advanced System settings

Please check to see if your steps were the same as those in step 6 here:
Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

Also have a look in C:\Windows\MiniDump......are there any dmp files there?

i have a strange problem on Vista x64. Previously, with Vista SP1 x32 I used the advanced settings to switch on the "Make external and internal output devices playback two different audio streams simultaneously" option. That way I could keep two different settings for speakers and headphones. I had the Speakers on mute and the headphones on. That way the internal speakers would be mute but when I plug-in the headphones the audio would automatically switch on "unmute".

However since I installed x64 I find that it shows two separate tabs for speakers and headphones as normal but if the speakers are set to mute audio would be muted for everything including the headphones. I checked everything and eventhough the headphones are set to "unmute" the headphones would only work if I went to the speakers tab and "unmuted" the speakers. Doing this means that when I unplug in the headphones the internal speakers are on.

I tried updating to version to no avail. Can anybody help. Sorry for the long explanation but i wanted to give you as much info as possible.

Hey all, I was just noticing that my monitor doesn't go off after 20 minutes like it's set to in my advanced power settings(Right click on desktop, click on properties / screensaver tab and click on "Power..." to access "Power Options Properties".The other settings in Power Options Properties also do not work, such as...Hard disk off, standby, and hibernate do not work. The computer just acts like all the settings are set to "never".What is the issue? I don't know how long this has been going on. As far as I know, these settings worked up until recently.Thank you community

I would like my VPN Advanced Settings to remain Off after restart. They turn back on each time. Seems like Windows should save that setting?
Checked Services.msc & msconfig but don't see anything to disable that looks like VPN.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion >Internet Settings > Connections
has no registry entries with VPN names, probably because I've never added any VPN connections.

I am signed in with a Microsoft account & do have Sync turned on for this PC. The only other PC running Windows 10 has a local account.

Can anyone tell me how to permanently disable VPN Advanced Settings?

thank you,

Answer:How to keep VPN Advanced Settings off after restart?

Seems you need to keep Remote Access Connection Manager (RasMan) and Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service (SstpSvc) services enabled as either Automatic or Manual as only changing the below values in the registry doesn't keep it off

Change Value entry to 0

Change Value entry to 0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\Parameters\Config\VpnCostedNetworkSettin gs
NoRoamingNetwork set to 0
Change Value entry to 0

Hello community:

What is the meaning and solution to the following message?
"Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to again. If this error persists, contact your site administrator."

These options are already turned on, by the indication of a check mark in the square box provided. I substituted for the actual address.

How do I correct this?  What is causing it?

As usual, thanks for all assistance.

CCleaner is considered a generally safe cleaner. Thus, all Advanced selections under the Windows tab are unticked by default, presumably for a reason, which may have to do with system stability.

However, in its 8-step Malware Removal Instructions, TechSpot advises:

?make sure all the boxes are ticked under the Windows and Applications tabs, including "Advanced" tabs (except for the Old prefetch Data option, this should be unticked).Click to expand...

My fist question is: What does one gain by including these Advanced selections apart from a little extra space, and even that until it is soon filled up again?

But my main question is: Why does CCleaner leave out these Advanced selections by default? More specifically, what could be the adverse consequences of ticking (selecting) them?

A full item-by-item reply would be most helpful for dispersing (or justifying) fear of selecting them. The tool itself does give some info on each, but this is not always clear. E.g. for Tray Notifications Cache it says ?You need to restart the explorer.exe process.? So, how does one restart the explorer.exe process? Don?t we start it anyway every time we click on its icon?

Answer:CCleaner Advanced Settings

CCleaner (Last updated on 27th January 2009)

The Advanced settings are basically defined on this page: CCleaner Beginner's Guide

Restarting Explorer.exe, is basically done by restarting your computer
