What is wrong with my Disc usage? 100% usage.

Question: What is wrong with my Disc usage? 100% usage.

I am currently running Windows 8 (not 8.1), and have been experiencing difficulty with my disc usage. Programs (especially upon startup) have been unresponsive or painfully slow lately, and upon checking the Task Manager, the Disc Usage will be at 100% or close to 100%. I have also noticed this happening when starting large programs such as games and Word. There is no logical explanation from the Task Manager, the most I have seen a process using during these spikes is around 7MB, and it's formatted for 700 MBs. So, what is sucking up the Disc usage, and how, if at all possible, do I stop it?

Preferred Solution: What is wrong with my Disc usage? 100% usage.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: What is wrong with my Disc usage? 100% usage.

Try Using Process Explorer Which provides the functionality of Windows Task Manager along with a rich set of features for collecting information about processes running on the user's system.

I have Windows 7 Professional on an SSD.In the drive listing (i.e. after double-clicking Computer), my o/s drive shows that 113 GB has been used. However, when I get properties for all the folders (including hidden/system folders), it only adds up to 59 GB.What is the extra data, please?

Answer:Windows 7 Pro on SSD showing wrong disc usage information

What are you adding, the individual file sizes or the actual space used on the disk which can be different. The file system used can have an effect. FAT32 is worse for this than NTFS although NTFS can be just as bad if you have a lot of very small files. If you are using NTFS there is the System Volume Information folder which you cannot know the contents offf. Then there is the recycle bin, did you take that into account. I take it you also counted pagefile.sys and hiberfile.sys if it is in use.Stuart

Question: Disc usage

I have an 15-Ab029tx with an i5 5th gen processor and 4 gb of ram. I'm facing an increased usage of the disc. It used to happen occasionaly before, but now it seems to be happenng all the time. The disc usage randomly spikes to 100% and stays there making the pc rather slow all the time. The CPU and the ram usage are optimal.

Question: Disc Usage

Just bought a second hand Alienware computer which was formatted and back to factory. I've logged into it and installed Norton Anti-virus but now my disc usage bounces 5% - 100% and will stay up in the high 80%-mid 90%. Other than norton which isn't running any scans or anything there's nothing else installed. I'm running Windows 10.

Question: Disk Usage wrong?

Ive just re-installed Vista 32-Bit as I didnt find any benefits from using 64-Bit and it appears that the drive usage space is out by 2Gb... I have enabled show hidden files AND protected operating system files and highlighted all in C:\ and it reports the following:...

10.7Gb of 30.8Gb free... so that means that 20.1Gb is used according to Vista...

but when I highlight all in C:\ with all hidden options to 'show' then click properties it only shows 18.1Gb used...

so theres 2Gb missing somewhere , now ive noticed this in the past in XP and the margin seems to get bigger as time goes on... I found this can also happen sometimes after the system crashing or forcing shut-off by holding power button in this seems to be due to the Hard-drive not shutting down properley and you end up with 'lost files' and lost space on the drive

but I've had no errors on this system the install is only 2 days old ...

does anyone have any answers?

also is there a way to completley disable hibernate as I dont use it and would like the 2Gb it uses

THANKS

Hey guys I'm currently having a huge problem... I recently changed my hard drive cause of the random 100% disc usage spikes... Well to no sucess that didn't work. It still causes major spikes i've noticed it mainly happens when i download something. I've tried disabling superfetch and all the other stuff including windows defenders nothing worked. Im thinking maybe its the mobo or cpu... considering my wifes hard drive wasnt spiking or anything i took her hard drive popped it in my desktop its using windows 10 also and her hard drive immediatly starts spiking from any little thing exactly replicating my hard drive. so leaves me to believe hardware related or maybe driver/bios... i have no clue any incite would be very appreciated thank you so much. ~ Brandon

How about when your'e NOT downloading something?

If you're downloading something, you're going to have disc activity on top of whatever else the system is doing....

Hi all, I have an older T430s with a small touchpad, it has physical buttons and although it is a bit worn it basically works perfectly. I also have a T440p for work, with a large touchpad lacking separate physical buttons (either for the trackpoint or the touchpad) and I just cannot use it effectively. I had and used a lot of Thinkpads over the years, both privately and professionally, so that's why I am so unable to understand how anyone can use this type of touchpad. And it seems to me that I am quite alone in this, complaints seem to focus on getting physical buttons for the trackpoint only, and as that now that they have returned all is dandy. My problem with the trackpad is due to the entire thing moving, why would you want the entire trackpad to move? When trying to click, I click somewhere else because the pointer moves as I press down the entire thing. If I want to drag and drop, I can't press with the right pressure with the different fungers to make sure I click, drag and drop where I want. Trying to always maintain the right pressure for different actions is causing a lot of extra stress on my fingers and hands. Am I just doing it wrong? I've never had problems like this with a trackpad from any vendor before this "monstrosity" in the T440p.

So I just got my computer about a month ago and I have noticed that 2 or 3 times a week it freezes up for 15-20 minutes or more, and the Disk usage is at 100% on the performance monitor. I checked the system error logs and found that the Bonjour service from apple had a critical error when it froze. I then disabled the service from running and computer ran fine for a week or so then started freezing again. I have ran disk optimizer, defrag, and virus scans with no success to fixing the problem. On the processes tab of the performance monitor it will show a few different processes using the most disk i/o. Windows Installer, Windows Module Installer Worker, System, and few others I cant remember right now.

Any advice on how I can get this to stop happening?

Side note: this problem happens at any time with 0 programs up and running or 10 programs. I have 16 GB of memory so its not a memory problem. Just hope its something that can be fixed and I didnt just waste a bunch of money on a crap machine.

Answer:Windows 8 freezing with 100% disc usage

I have heard that Norton may be the culprit to the high disk usage. I have just disabled it for the time being and I'll see if this helps the issue. Anyone know of a good (free?) antivirus that will work as a substitute without causing this problem?

Hi
I have a Sony Vaio laptop model# VPCEB16FG.
Operating system is Window 7 64 Bit.
Window was crashed some how and tried following thing to recover but it didn't work.
1) Start up repair
2) tried to set the default factory setting.

I have a recovery discs which was created when i bought the laptop. I tried to insert the recovery disc in Disc Drive and restart the computer but it didn't detect, then i thought i need to change the BIOS boot setting to CD/DVD, but not sure how to do that, please find the attach screen for this, it will be great if you can tell me what change need to be done in BIOS setting so that i am able to boot through the recovery disc and resume the window 7 installation.

Thanks a lot for your help and assistance.

Samar

Answer:Recovery Disc usage for Window 7 64 bit

BIOS Boot Order appears to be set correctly with OD set to boot first.

When you put the disk in the drive are you getting prompt to "Press Any Key to Boot Disk?"

When you boot into System Recovery Options does it find an installation to Repair? Offer a Repair? If you choose Startup Repair, what does it report? Try also System Restore from options list.

Google your model number User manual to see if there's a way to run Recovery Partition from boot, which is a more stable way to Recovery in most cases.

Do you have access to a Win7 installation DVD? Another option is to clean reinstall with the Product Key on COA sticker, following these steps: Reinstalling Windows 7

I have an Elements external drive which has been giving me problems ( regularly collapsing ) from which I have been transferring data to a new Seagate drive . The Elements drive is now empty but the properties record shows that 6 gb is still utilised ( out of 495 capacity ) . There are seemingly no hidden files . Is there any way that I can check to see what is there , or is this simply likely to be a recording of usage glitch which I should simply ignore ?

You may find if you go into Control Panel>Folder Options>View menu, and tick to "Show all Hiden Files and Folders" then untick "Hide Protected System Folders" you'll then see System Volume Information and possibly Recycler foldes which account foer the msissing space. You'll want to delete Recycler if you're looking to send this drive to the tip in case it contains remnants of personal data.

Hi,

I depend on my computer for my living, so the issue is frustrating. It only started happening on that new laptop with Windows 8 installed. My old laptop with exactly the same set of programms never had that issue. I don't have too many programms installed anyway.

HD has 500 GB, with 345 GB free space. Avast antivirus is installed. I've scanned my laptop with all sorts of programms recommended on this thread, and nothing was found: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/569672/slow-computer-with-100-disk-usage/page-2

I've also went through the step mentioned there and there is not much difference. The usage is not constantly on 100%, but it spikes often. I think avast antivirus may be responsible for it, but their tech support has not been helpful (they never responded, although I'm a paying customer), so I'm thinking of getting rid of it. Not sure what to use instead, though, and will also be grateful for recommendations.

Answer:100% disc usage, applications hanging

I generally recommend ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus if choosing a paid for program as it leaves a small footprint...meaning it is not intrusive and does not utilize a lot of system resources. Emsisoft Anti-Malware is also a good choice for the same reason and so is Kaspersky Anti-virus. If you don't want to pay then I would recommend Bitdefender Anti-virus Free Edition.Keep in mind that all free Anti-virus programs now come with toolbars or other bundled software except Bitdefender Free...see Has the antivirus industry gone mad?!ESET and Emsisoft Anti-Malware also have the added advantage of blocking the installation of most Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) (such as adware, spyware, unwanted toolbars, browser hijackers) if you enable that feature. For other alternatives to consider, please read:Choosing an Anti-Virus ProgramAlso keep in mind than an anti-virus program alone does not provide comprehensive protection and cannot prevent, detect and remove all threats at any given time. Anti-virus and anti-malware programs each perform different tasks as it relates to computer security and threat detection. Essentially, they look for and remove different types of malicious threats. Therefore, you need both an anti-virus and an anti-malware solution for maximum protection. Please read:Supplementing your Anti-Virus Program with Anti-Malware Tools

Hi everyone,

I have some problems with my relatively new dell laptop (4 months old, and the problems are present for like 3 months), which include: Very high RAM usage: 80% when only Microsoft Edge is turned on.
Very high Disc usage: 100% almost at all times
Low performance in games (the laptop meets the req. for a game, still cant handle it; low fps, stuttering, freezing.
Can't handle videos sometimes: the sound works but video is frozen, or video Works and sound freezes.
Sometimes VERY S L O W: sometimes when i open an app, it turns on after a minute; when i type, the letters appear after a while.

I have already reset it to factory settings and wiped the HDD, didn't help. I have a lot of free space on HDD, no dust in the laptop, no physical damage, no viruses, no (useless) background proceses.

I have already had a call with a dell technician (he did some changes and driver updates), also didn't help.

Do you think a RAM upgrade would solve this? Or do i have to take it to service? Or anything else? Please help.

Thanks for answer in advance. (and sorry for my weak english)

Regards,
Martin

If you go back and look at the Resource Monitor, does the Disk Activity window show what or where the G: and E: partitions are being written?

I am not sure what units the Disk Queue number is in, but if it means seconds, 12 would seem to be a very large number.

Any chance the drive is going bad?

Hello, Can someone please help.

I have a Tecra M9 Model no.PTM90E-05700WEN Serial no.Y76875H O/S XP Professional.

The problem I have is as follows------ I wish to reset the machine back to factory settings,I have the Product Recovery disc that came with it as well as the Microsoft license key for Office Basic 2007.

The instructions on the sleeve of the disc simply say " Insert the first disc into the drive and shut down the computer.Turn on your computer while keeping the F12 key pressed. Use the cursor keys to select optical disc drive in the menu.Follow the which are appearing on the screen."

Problem no.1 ---I only have one disc i can definitely say i have not lost any. instructions refer to "first disc implying there is more than one.The disc i have is clearly marked "Product Recovery" . There are some numbers on the disc which are as follows---GMR400776EN0 and also CD SD124219.
The disc is also clearly marked Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

Problem no.2---- When I carry out the above instructions nothing happens other than the system starts as normal. i can assure you that I'm depressing the F12 key before Windows opens.

I do NOT get the option to select anything let alone the optical disc drive. i have tried this several times but with always the same result.

Other ways I've tried ---- using the F8 key brings up several menu options ie safe working mode etc etc but nothing referring to repair computer.

Answer:Re: Tecra M9 - Recovery Disc usage

Hello

Tecra M9 is pretty old notebook model so method with F8 or ?zero? will not work at all.

Instructions are nothing but ?general instructions? and not written for your Tecra M9 only. Recovery image is not the same for all notebook models. They are different so with some notebooks there is one disc only but with some models there are two discs.

I believe you when you say you got one disc only.
There are three methods how to start recovery disc installation:
- start notebook and enter BIOS settings > change boot order and put CD/DVD drive as first bootable device.
- when notebook starts pres ?c? key several times. This will force optical disc drive to be first bootable device.
- start notebook and press F12 several times to enter boot menu. Put the recovery disc into optical disc drive, choose CD/DVD drive and press ENTER.

Please test all of this methods and send some feedback.

Hi guys, my laptop, both my old(i dont have that one anymore) and my new one, have disk usage around 100% for not even 10mb usage. I have no idea why this happens, I turned off Superfetch and Microsoft search index thingy... Steam was updating a game, said it uses 7.1MB disc space, then i go to task manager, shows about 14.8MB and full disc usage.
Any idea how to adjust it? I adjusted my virtual memory to see if it will change anything, but so far no luck. My laptop is a Lenovo Y50, has 8GB RAM and runs games fine, but when I am installing or doing things to update my disc usage goes 100% with 10MB minimum...
Edit: Here is a picture http://imgur.com/a/TGjlb

It seems very little MB takes up a 100% of the disc space, which I think is quite strange... Any help?

Please post a screenshot (or clear photo) of your task manager with the processes using most resources at the top of the relevant column.

Then try a clean boot and see if there's any change.

Hello. So I've googled and seen this is a pretty common issue (disc thrashing). But I'm not sure how to exactly narrow down the exact process and possibly kill it. My pc doesn't exactly slow down during this, but it looks like it's random and the 'thrashing' goes on for several minutes several times per day.

It appears it's something in: Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted) (8).
(see attachments).

I have Process Explorer and Process Monitor. Any help is appreciated in narrowing down and killing this process.

Hi Cerpintine and welcome to Tenforums.

I recently had this same problem with a system I was working on. It was a Toshiba W8.1 x64 which I upgraded to W10 home. It was a real brain-buster, and all I could do was guess. I finally figured it out, and it may be no help at all for you, but I'll tell you what happened.

The system came with all the Toshiba bloatware, and several "trial" programs, one of them being Symantec/Norton Anti-Theft. First I removed the unnecessary bloatware. Now, the anti-theft program had never been used. Because of that, I was not able to "uninstall" it. So, I tried to install it, just so I could uninstall it. But it would not install - it did nothing. So, it was there, but it wasn't.

I proceeded to manually remove all files/folders, and then went hacking the registry until I cleared out every entry and every key I could find for Norton and Symantec. BINGO! Thrashing gone.

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

Source Web Browser Memory Usage Benchmark Gets It All Wrong

Web browser memory usage might not be that much of an issue in these days with Gigabytes of computer memory being build into modern computer systems. There is however the low end market that is fueled by the success of netbooks and other low end hardware. A memory usage test of popular web browser might therefor not affect all computer users but it could be interesting for those that run low end hardware or want to make sure they to use an efficient web browser.
A web browser memory usage comparison was recently posted a the Dot Net Pearls website that compared the memory usage of the Google browser Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera 10 and Safari. The web browsers were configured to open 30 tabs over the command line which where then closed manually by the author except for one. A script running in the background recorded the memory usage of all processes during that time which were then used in the comparison.

Answer:Web Browser Memory Usage Benchmark Gets It All Wrong

Please this gets it all wrong as well. Who cares how many tabs are open? I can sit here and open 900 tabs of a site that is mainly text based and not get the same results.

The Browser Benchmark tests the abilities of the browser during tasks. Which is not the same on every site. It compares things like DOM Objects, control of Flash objects and such.

I can open 4 tabs and have it use up more resources than their 30. Cause i will open video intensive sites. Which will cause more Resource Usage.

Give me a break. Ohh i opened 30 tabs. So what? Yeah it causes more resources to be used, but that doesnt mean that will happen on every PC. That doesnt mean that every browser on every machine will react that way.

Why? Cause who says i use even 1 of their test sites. So their results are just as wrong as the benchmarks. We dont know what sites they used and therefor their results are just as wrong cause all they do is show how much opening multiple tabs will do to a browser. I can test that by opening my Speed Dial 30 times. Doesnt mean that my results will match anyone else's cause i wont have the same items on my speed dial.

Funny how just about everyone who commented said the same exact thing....

I constantly freeze due to my pc being at 100% disc usage consistently. Due to the disc usage it causes my laptop to blue screen, I have recieved the following errors:Bad system config info, kernal error in page data, driver power state failure. When at 100% disc usage i only use about 1mb of space.I use a wireless internet connection. Before these problems occured I had upgraded to windows 10, soon after the disc usage started to go up more often eventually causing my laptop to blue screen. With this bsod it said that my operating system couldn't be found, so i had to revert back to windows 8 via factory reset. With my first boot up on my factory reset I was still having the same problem as before, but since then my problems and errors keep increasing.I'm hoping to diagnose my problem and get help before its too late.

I had someone re-install WXP without the recovery disc and Qosmio engine as I did not have them. Now I am missing things like Bluetooth, the manual for the laptop, as well as other apps and such.

Toshiba mailed me the replacement discs. Now I have them. Do I need to do a whole system reformat-re-install of windows to get my old computer back? I have downloaded the manual tonight but I don?t think it addresses this situation as I remember. Nothing on the posts either.

Anyone do this before?
Thanks

Answer:Recovery disc usage with Qosmio notebook

Wait a moment! What you want to do exactly? Do you want to have ?factory settings? again or just install missing stuff?

Which CD/DVDs you have now?

I have been tasked with cleaning up all the user profiles and hunting down offenders that download music on my network. We use roaming profiles so this is eating into a lot of disc space. I found one of the profiles that had 5gigs of torrents and music on it, but I have over 400 to go through. Does anyone have anything in particular that can scan network drives/volumes for music or media? Or that can point out the files that take up the most space? Thanks!

Answer:Auditing User profiles/disc usage

Windirstat will show you graphically what folder is taking up the most space. On a large server, kick it off and let it crunch away and when you get back to it there'll be a nice chart for you to browse through.

I figured I'd ask here before I get very, very angry. My ThinkPad SL400 has experienced a massive failure.  I was able to rescue my documents, etc., but the boot software was corrupted and I needed to do a complete system restore.  I didn't have viable rescue and recovery discs and so paid $45 plus shipping to order a set of them from Lenovo.  They came with instructions, which I have followed. Step 9 of their instructions states: "When all of the data has been copied from the last disc in the set, a message is displayed prompting you to restart the computer.  Remove the disc and then click Yes. Note: The remainder of the recovery process is fuly automated and no action is required by you.  the computer will restart into the Windows desktop several times and you might experience periods when no activity is apparent on the screen for several minutes at a time.  This is normal." Unfortunately, that's not what happened.  When I rebooted the machine I got a message stating: 8206 - Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key. I've restarted the machine several times with no different answer.  I tried booting from the first two Rescue and Recovery discs they sent and neither worked to complete the boot process.  I tried changing the boot device to the hard drive and it didn't work.  I called Lenovo Technical Support and they told me that, even t... Hello, I just recieved my Y510p and I am having some problems already.  First off, it scans the drive and repairs every time it turns on.  I'm not sure if that's normal or not.  Secondly, it does take some time for my desktop to load up with all the icons.   Third, the disc usage for drive C, D is 100% after a few minutes.  And lastly, whenever I shut it down or make it restart it will be on the screen for over 5 min until the screen goes black.  Keys and power button are still on though.  I have to manually turn it off everytime with the power button. Please help!

Answer:Y510p won't shutdown, restart, 100% disc usage

I've tried installing the Lenovo Solution System, but it froze on installation.  I have tried to system recovery, but the PC tries to restart, but restart never goes away.   I'm running out of options.  Manually turned it off and back on, it's now letting me do a system recovery.  Hope this works! So I reset it back to factory settings, and now nothing will install correctly.  I try to install autodesk products, it begins to install and then the process just ends,  no trace of it left.  Same thing with the intel update install, it just won't go.

TiWorker keeps chewing up my HDD today. It keeps popping up in my resource monitor, causing my HDD to make a ton of racket (it's a loud WD black drive). In task manager, I right-click on it and select low priority, but then a few minutes later when it pops back up again, it's set back to normal. What can I do to reign this in? I understand it's part of Windows update, but this is getting very annoying. I ran a full Windows update successfully just a couple weeks ago. I have the registry tweak set so that my wired connection is marked as metered so Windows update doesn't force updates at all the worst times. Also, since I read this is sometimes related to low disc space, my disc space is currently at only 23GB free as I've got lots of temp files stored on it until I back them up. I don't see why that should affect Windows update though.

Very hard to say for certain, but TiWorker is also used by scheduled maintenance. Part of that is to permanently apply older patches and compress the contents. It can go for some time. You can disable the Scheduled Maintenance job (not recommended), or just let it finish. If you try to corral it in, it's just gonna get back out. It's much worse on a HDD, particularly if the HDD is fragmented. Looks like it's just getting around to maintenance from last Tuesday Patches.

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
defragged
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Thanks!

Answer:Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.

Edit: Posted this on the wrong forum! DOH. Reported as this is for Windows 8, not 7.

Windows 10's message was typically IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, suspecting a driver issue I reformatted to 8.1 which I am on now. The message I'm getting now is PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.

My strongest suspect is memory, however HeavyLoad ran for 4+ hours maxing both memory and CPU before the system decided to restart. I also ran a Memtest86+ which passed multiple times. I still suspect a memory problem though as I am unable to boot the system with 4 sticks installed unless I have the XMP profile already activated. 3 sticks is fine, 2 sticks is fine, 1 stick is fine, different ports are fine. I tried different sticks in different slots and no change.

Tonight I am getting a lot of the following errors in the event log. This is while the computer was remaining idle on the login screen. I'm running WoW now and there are none to be seen.

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!

Answer:Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

Recently my computer has been plagued by High CPU and general malware. I believe i've removed most of the malware. But I can't seem to fix the issue with the dllhost.exe and multiple explorer.exe running.

First i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Found lots of issues. all resolved. Ran them recently again and no malware was found. Still have the explorer.exe issue though.

Then I used combofix, but it changed nothing.

In the meanwhile i've just been ending the explorer.exe processes that take high CPU. This allows me to temporarily use my computer before they start popping up again.

Answer:dllhost.exe, multiple explorer.exe's, high CPU usage, and memory usage

I don't know what you need me to post. Hopefully this might provide some insight.

My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Can anyonre help???

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

Hardware/full build: Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core, GeForce GTX 1080 8GB GAMING X 8G, Node 804 MicroATX Mid Tower - System Build - PCPartPicker

Hello everyone, this is my first post so please bear with me.

As the title suggests I am part way through a repair on this A110-162. The owner, my friend connected the wrong power supply and killed the machine.
I have stripped it down and PF1 has opened.

I have found a supplier for this item but have been unable to ascertain the rating. If some kind soul has a parts list for this model,

I would appreciate very much if you could look up the correct rating for me.

Regards....Chookey

Answer:Satellite A110-162 died due to a usage of wrong AC adaptor

I think in such case only the authorized service partner in your country would be able to help you.
If it?s possible then a ASP technician could order such part from the Toshiba directly.

So contact the guys and ask for the assistance!

Bye & good luck

i bought my lap last april and after the crash of the system.
I used the recovery disc that i made from the image on the hard disc but it erased all the data in the two partitions.

My question: Is there a way to use the disc to format partition C only without erasing the data on the other partition?

Answer:Toshiba recovery disc usage for Satellite A300-211

Hi

No. the recovery disk will format the whole HDD and will erase everything from the HDD and partition.
The usage of the HDD recovery procedure will format only the C and will leave the data on the data partition.

Cheers

Hello,

I have a problem with my computer, It became very slow lately. The main symptom is that the disc usage is always at 100% (with in reality only 10 Mo/s). I have already tried many things that were unsuccessful :

- Clean disk and registry
- run Malware Byte (Minor things were found)
- desactivate superfetch; windows search and defrag
- remove windows tips& notifications
- disable MSI (see No superfetch No windows search No Defrag still 100% disk usage - Windows 10 Forums)
- Change some parameters on google Chrome/Skype (see : How to fix 100 disk usage in Windows 10 - Microsoft Community)
- change the page file settings ( see here : Disk usage always at 100% [Solved] - windows 10 - Windows 10)

I still have the same problem . Any other suggestions ?

I have to say that I am not a pro, so I followed most of the things I cited above without really understanding what I was exactly doing... If you think that I might not have done something properly, you can ask me to repeat it.

Thanks a lot in advance for help !

Hi folks

I posted this problem at Spyware Specific forum, but was advised to post here.

Recently when I use RealProducer Plus v.10 to convert mpeg2 clips to rmvb, it takes a long time to do so. When I checked, RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage - as much as 94-95%, causing total CPU usage to be 95-98%. I have scanned with Norton and Adaware - all ok. Then I used Spy Sweeper - it found and cleared Csmin. Howveer, the problem still remains when I use RealProducer.

CPU usage without using RealProducer

CPU usage using RealProducer

Will my CPU will be damaged if CPU usage is so high?

Please help to take a look at my .exe processes. Are they OK?
What is PQV2iSvc.exe?

Please advise. Thanks a lot!

Answer:RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage? Will high CPU usage damage CPU?

To answer your question about PQV2iSvc.exe is part of Power Quest drive image and Norton Ghost drive backup software.

Converting video formats can be a resource intensive process. Unless your system temps are getting really high there shouldn't be any damage to the CPU.

I have the following config-> Windows XP Professional SP2 which I have been using for the last 3 years.-> Updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 running for the last 1 year.-> No new software were installed in the last month that I can recall of.Suddenly I get this problem:1. I ran an application one day (it was winrar), and nothing starts.2. Task manager shows CPU usage as 50 (I have dual core), while memory usage remains at 84k3. After a few days vlcplayer.exe started giving the same problem-> So, I reinstalled windows (formatted my C drive and installed a fresh copy). -> Everything worked fine. I was using Irfanview.exe with no problems, but then one day again, IrfanView.exe did not start. Same problem : CPU usage was 50% while memory remained really low.-> I uninstalled it from C:/program files and installed a new copy in C:/program files --- this did not solve the problem-> I uninstalled it again from C:/program files and installed to D:/ Now it works fine...-> But now again I got the same problem with media player.exeI have tried a virus scan with Kaspersky (updated) and a scan with spybot. They both came out to be clean.Any ideas?I cant reinstall Windows as that did not solve the problem.

Answer:CPU usage increases to max (while memory usage doesnt) when I run a application

I dont know if this helps: I read somewhere about creating a drive image for easy backup. So I tried DriveImageXML, but it gave an error regarding CRC check which related to bad sectors i suppose. I ran a scan disk before installing a fresh copy of Windows. Obviously, this hasnt helped either.

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

in Task Manager sort by CPU usage and see what apps are responsible.

HELP!My computer has become ridiculously slow, taking minutes to do nothing. The computer is quite old (4-5 years), but has had XP and MS Office installed fom Day 1. I have not added any other software which might explain the slowness. When the computer is slow, if I Ctrl:Alt:Delete, the CPU usage is sometimes very high (80%) or above, but not always, however, the Page file usage history is always at least 80/90% of capacity (value reads as nearly 400Mb).What is the page file usage history? Is this likely to be why my computer is slow and can any settings be changed, or do I have to bin the computer and buy one which works? Thanks

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have been having a big problem the last week with my computer. Everything is running incredibly slow. I opened the windows task manager, and it has shown very high CPU usage, often fluctuating between 80% and 100%, though sometimes staying between about 5-20%. The page file usage has been conistently high, the lowest being in the mid-600 kbs, while most often staying around 720 or 730 kbs. These patterns seem to be unaltered by the amount of programs I have running (the problem occurs even when there are absolutely no programs running) or whether I'm on the internet or not. I am very ignorant when it comes to computers, but I suspected it was some sort of spyware problem. However, after scanning with Norton 360, Spybot's Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Defender, only a few low-level threats showed up, and fixing them led to no improvement in my computer's performance. The slow functioning seems to be directly related to the times when the CPU usage is high.

My OS is Microsoft XP. My processor is 1.73 GHz. I have 504 MB of RAM. I will attach my HijackThis log below. I hope I haven't forgotten any necessary information, but I would appreciate any help you can offer. I'm becoming very frustrated.

This happens usually every twenty or so minutes, it's very random, so this is just a mode. The speed itself is not affected (when it's on, it's fine). I've been able to determine that the reason is somewhere on my desktop.

It's a HP Envy with intel i7 3.40 GHz. About a year and three months old, and using windows 8. I typically use google chrome for browsing, only occasionally firefox. I am connected to my internet wirelessly, which is broadcasted from the router a floor beneath me. The router is plugged into a phone jack, shared with the house phone (no problems with the phone what-so-ever). Tbaytel is my provider, and I use Kaspersky antivirus. Network details; Speed-72.0 mbps. Sent-13,936,*** and counting. Received- 244,015,*** and counting. Security type is WPA2-Personal, Encryption type is AES and we have a security key set up (That we recently changed to see if it would help, and of course it didn't).

This is what's scary;

Processes under the task manager brought up nothing, but looking at the Wi-fi under the Performance tab showed that something is definitely going on. The amount of Wi-fi usage spikes HUGE amounts! But at the time I took this screenshot, I was only running an antivirus full scan (which turned up nothing), google chrome on this site, and had both the task ... Read more

Answer:Internet cutting out from MASSIVE usage, but usage not accounted for.

About your new router...
How long have you been using it or since when did you got it?
How long has it been opened? Have you tried powercycling it? (Turning it off and then on)

Also, Have you tried testing it while your laptop is directly plugged in on your router with an ethernet cable? (Try speedtest.net)

Does this happen to other of your computers or device?
Does Tbaytel do line testing when you called them?

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
Any help would be appreciated.

So, it's exactly as the title says,
I downgraded back down to windows 8 after feeling some sluggishness with my windows 10 OS.
It started off fine, but once I started downloading and installing necessary windows update files, I noticed once again the sluggishness I felt before, except this time my System Disk which is also my SSD drive, was being used up to 100% while my CPU was completely fine

Can someone please help me out in this scenario.

Hello and To BC!

Look under the process tab in the task manager and find out what process is using the most resources. Does this same situation happen when google chrome is closed?

Hello,

After a couple of hours search and read I am unable to find a definitive answer to the question as to whether the two subject terms are identical.

If anyone has absolute certainty about this I would appreciate your posting.

Thanks.

Sooo. What should I do? I can usually stumble my way through this kind of thing, but I'm at a loss. OH! an instance of svchost.exe is currently at 175,812k and I just restarted. I dunno what that means.

I've recently been getting 100% CPU usage errors, and over the top memory usage, then my computer for the most part locks up. I've reinstalled WinXP, fixed IE settings back to origional settings. Ran antispyware programs and AVG. At first my problems started when I played games on Facebook, getting script errors. As I've been doing a lot of studying on these problems, I got to thinking maybe I need more memory. Then I start getting 100% CPU errors.

I've noticed in my task manager in Processes there are lots of svchost.exe listings, and a few other programs that are listed more than once. Im attaching a picture of this list, in idle mode. Wandering if anyone else sees anything that may look odd.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so recently my desktop (a very NICE desktop) has been crashing and such. Even when I'm not in Maya or Photoshop, I see in the task manager the usage jumping around like crazy. I've noticed that svchost.exe sucks 100,000% or more of my usage and I can't load Counter Strike Source anymore without it crashing to the desktop or forcing me to restart my PC because of a blank screen. I've tried many programs that may help it like Process Tamer, Registry Cleaners, FreeRAMXP Pro and others, but the problem remains. This started happening just recently so....

Anyway, WTF!!? How do I alleviate this b/s??

Hi, In November I purchased a new Lenovo Y50. It's the non-touch 1080p version with the GTX960m. Recently, I've had issues with the fans spinning up while the laptop is idle. I opened task manager, and there are random spikes of 100% disk usage on startup and sometimes when I leave the machine idle or I'm using Chrome. Recently, I've noticed strange spikes in CPU usage too, with occasional bouts of 20% usage for seemingly no reason.  I contacted support, and they weren't able to find any issues, but had me install Lenovo Solution Center and do a full run of the tests, which didn't find anything wrong. They also had me disable all non essential startup programs and see if the problem happened again, and it does. However, cpu and disk temperatures were normal, so I was told to just monitor the problem and see if anything changes.   My system's definitely not functioning properly. Startup is notably slow considering it has the 8gb ssd and I never had issues with the fans coming on when I first got it. I've heard that there are issues with the hybrid 8gb ssd/1 tb hdd, so I need some input on this. Why is this happening? Is it a hardware issue? Firmware? My case number is 8006295558. I would greatly appreciate some help from a rep or anyone who can give me a hand with the issue.

Every time I start my computer in the morning, my CPU usage and PF usage are very high, slowing down the system, for about 45 mins to 1 hour. I have included images of the Performance Tab and Processes tab of Task Manager. The image of the Performance Meter is not a totally accurate reflection of the issue, because usually the CPU usage bounces between 60% and 100%.I am using Windows XP Home EditionVersion 2002Service Pack 3Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80 GHz1.5 GB RAMI have already used CCLeaner and Uniblue. I have scanned with MS Defender and AVG Free version. That is the current AV software I am running. I am also using Norton Ghost to maintain a backup of my computer. I want to try and fix the problem before I reformat and reload EVERYTHING.Is this a sign of spyware/malware or is my system finally too old?

Anyone got any advice?

Answer:95% CPU usage and 95% System Idle Usage?

There are times when task manager will misrepresent the total processor usage as well over 100% constantly. This is usually caused by one of three things :
1.Bad DriversMalware on the system
2.A Flaky Windows install - was this an upgrade or an old OS install?
3.A Problem with the motherboard (try a firmware update)

First off, I have been advised to start a new thread in this forum, as a previous thread in a different forum, from this site, regarding this issue was not completely resolved. See link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/318854/physical-memory-increases-to-98-over-a-few-days/Here's what's happening. Upon booting up, it seems to take a bit too long to even to get to the Vista logo; then, when booted up, the harddrive seems to be running constantly for about an hour or so, yet nothing is loading;lastly, when the computer is on for a few days at a time, the physical memory seems to increase, eventually getting to anywhere from 75% to 90+%, yet I don't have to use the computer to do this - it can just be on and maybe just have Outlook running.Specs:OS: Vista Home Premium SP2 (x64)Processor: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9300 2.5GhzRAM: 4GbFree Space: 244Gb free/465Gb total

The problem i am facing is that after a while of running, it will slow down and hang, often resulting with a blue screen. When i run my pc again, i took a look at the task manager and found that my cpu usage shoots up to 100% whenever i run somethin.

And the numbers for the mem usage is also very high. i.e: 20,976 K for iexplorer.exe

Plz help and sorry if my english is a bit bad, it is not my first language.

Hi,

I have 8GB of RAM (7.90 usable) and I get "Your computer is running low on RAM" messages, up to the point where Windows asks me to close programs or even closes some. The problem is I don't see this reflected in the Task Manager -> Memory column for the running processes. Any idea what's eating up my RAM or why Windows is falsely reporting it's low on RAM?

Screenshot: the reported RAM adds to around 2GB, but the reported 77% would mean 6GB are being used. What's up?!

Answer:Abnormal RAM usage / reported usage

Post a screenshot of Task Manager - Performance tab when the problem occurs.

Adding up the items in the process memory usage column will never equal total usage. It was never intended that they would. There are major users of memory that are not processes, not all of which are shown in Task Manager. And in this case not all processes are shown. You must select "Show processes from all users" to see all processes.

The error message states that the computer was low on memory. The problem usually has nothing to do with RAM at all.

So I've been dealing with high CPU usage and physical memory usage for a while now and was wondering if anyone could help. I've been looking at windows task manager and I think I've found the culprit. I rebooted my computer just to make sure and I believe its one of the 12 svchost.exe processes running on my computer. When the computer rebooted it was fine but then after some minutes that process shot up to as much as 1,000,000k in physical memory usage right now its around 705,148k. I assume that there is my problem but I am not exactly sure so I was wondering if anyone here could help me out. Thanks.

Answer:High CPU usage and memory usage

Make sure all drivers are up to date. etc
Use Process Explorer to pin point the actual problem.
