can I burn a DVD from inside Windows 8 inside VirtualBox

Question: can I burn a DVD from inside Windows 8 inside VirtualBox

I've been backing up "My Documents" with CDBurnerXP because

1. I consider Windows Backups to be opaque and I prefer to keep them simple and to know what is going on
2. Windows Backups does some things I believe are risky so I will not use it
3. Windows 7 had a deep directory structure problem and I presume Windows 8 continues to
4. It's ridiculous to backup "Windows" when I really only care about the safety of my data and since I am a slow typist who can't type at 3 Gigahertz it seems unlikely that I will ever have produced enough data that won't fit in one piece of optical media
5. I prefer to use a backup medium that has no moving parts and no firmware and humidity and mechanical shock resistant and contains no software and nothing vendor specific and blank DVDs are one such medium
6. I don't understand how a "backup DVD" can get scratched if there are never children and animals in the building (movie DVDs are a different matter)

Unfortunately, I can't continue down this route because my Windows 8 is now inside VirtualBox and I can't seem to make CDBurnerXP and Windows 8 recognize a blank DVD as a suitable target for a backup.

I am looking for suggestions for DVD burning software that is free and is known through your personal experience to work inside VirtualBox.

Preferred Solution: can I burn a DVD from inside Windows 8 inside VirtualBox

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: can I burn a DVD from inside Windows 8 inside VirtualBox

I can't comment on VirtualBox, but the most popular free burning program is Imgburn. Although I have Nero burning software, I find the Imgburn to be easier to use for iso CD's and DVD's.

The Official ImgBurn Website

I also use Macrium for backing up my PC's, but I back up to separate hard drives, not DVD media. There is a free version of Macrium.

I want to add a Fuji Xerox USB printer to Windows 7. I believe it is a GDI printer meaning most of the processing happens on the PC and so the driver is responsible for doing most of the work.

Since such a driver is not available on Ubuntu, I have my Windows 7 as a "guest" operating system on Virtual Box on Ubuntu.

There is a VirtualBox filter to allow the Fuji Xerox USB printer to be seen by Windows and in fact, Windows does detect the printer and it appears to use a default Microsoft USB Printer Driver which of course will not work for the type of printer that absolutely must have a Fuji Xerox driver. There is no point in upgrading that driver since the attempt to upgrade will just indicate that it is already the latest Microsoft USB Printer Driver.

The manufacturer's readme file says to "Add a Local Printer" but the problem is that the only ports visible when I add a printer are COM and LPT. I do not see a USB type of port. (As an experiment, I installed the driver on another pure Windows 7 computer and I can see that the port being used is a USB Virtual Printer Port named USB001. Yes, it prints on that computer. I cannot recall how I installed it . I have also installed this driver on a couple of Dell desktop Win 7 machines and a Samsung RF711 laptop Win 7 dual booting. I've always found a way to use my printer from those other Win 7 setups.)

Presently, I'm using the same hardware, the Samsung, but instead of dual booting, I am using ... Read more

Answer:adding a USB Port to Windows 7 inside VirtualBox

First be sure to have installed the Oracle Extension for VirtualBox.

You have to go to the Virtual Box "Machine", "Settings", "USB" dialog. In there, enable the checkbox for USB 2.0 EHCI Controller.

Create a USB Filter specific to the printer by simply selecting the printer from the list of USB devices.

Then when you go to "Add a Printer" the Port "USB001 Virtual Printer Port" will appear.

I'd like to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Pro. This will be run as a guest on VirtualBox 4.3.2 (the newest as of November 2013) on Ubuntu 12.04 (April 2012) with weekly updates.

In Windows Store, an attempt to upgrade fails because, it indicates that Windows 8.1 is "not supported by your CPU". This is a doubtful explanation because it runs Windows 8 fine. The CPU is an Intel i7 - 2670 QM that was released in Q4 2011 in a unit that retailed in June 2012. VirtualBox has WDDM and 3D acceleration since at least VirtualBox 4.1 which was released more than a year ago. I run with VirtualBox's display 2D acceleration ON, and previously with 3D acceleration OFF because I've had problems. However, 3D acceleration is presently ON. Regardless, Windows 8.1 will not install either way.

This is what Microsoft indicates under "more information" about Win 8.1.
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

I note that Windows 8 also requires PAE, NX, and SSE2 so that should not be the problem. I have allocated 4 GB RAM and about 500 GB disk, which are both more than adequate.

Edit: I use a 64 bit machine with 64 bit Linux and 64 bit Windows.
Edit: Although I tried to install Windows 8.1 with 3D acceleration ON, I generally keep it OFF because it can res... Read more

Hello, Is it possible to desactivate the inside screen of the Yoga 260 to work with two extern screens without adding an extern graphic card or a dock. The 260 has a hdmi output but Lenovo provide also an adaptator that allowed you to connect a vga monitor. Unfortunatly when you use the vga output, the hdmi is automatically desactivated. That seems normal as the Intel graphic card do not support 3 screens. But what if you could turn of the inside screen? Can't we allocate the graphic card only to the two outside screens ? Thanks a lot and sorry for my english. R.

Answer:Yoga 260 : Turn off inside screen to allocate the inside graphic card on two extern screens.

Your English is fine. I was hoping someone with direct experience would reply. I don't have a machine here with that chipset to test on. I have one coming, but it will be a while. I am not suggesting that you take apart your new machine and risk breaking something, but I am a little crazy and if I had this question, this is what I would try: I would remove the bottom cover and temporarily disconnect the LCD cable. I would figure that if the VGA and HDMI would not both work at that point, it was hopeless and give up. If it did work I would start reading about chipset options

very strange problem.

i have a folder on my desktop that used to be called "c++ programs" and has since been renamed to "goaway" (since it won't)

inside this folder which is located at C:\Users\bert\Desktop\goaway is a folder called C:

when i click it it brings me back to just C:\ - it acts like a shortcut - but it isn't! its my actual C drive. when i try to delete "goaway" it starts to send terabytes of data to my recycle bin. i CANNOT delete this folder! when i try, it will delete all that stuff and wipe most of the stuff from my C drive (which is.. uh.. important).

i went to cmd and cd'd to ~/goaway, and pressed Dir thinking its some sort of weird linking problem. heres a ss of the results:

(don't know why the image is all weird, thats just what tinypic did)

can anyone help me delete this forsaken folder? please help!

Whenever I go to a web page, my system freezes up for about 15-30 seconds. I checked in Task Manager and found it is the System process that is going very high whenever I go to a site. I took a screencap to show you, which you can find here:

It's more annoying then anything as far as IE is concerned, but the REAL problem is when I go to install add on's to one of my programs (20-20 design), whenever it gets to installing an HTML document (there aren't many), the System task goes up even higher and my pc freezes up.

I don't know if it is related but last time I got help here can be found here:

Can anybody please tell me what the issue could be?

I seen a youtube video of someone using the windows GUI inside a game, World Of Warcraft, and I was wondering how this is possible

Answer:windows GUI inside game

Too bad you didn't post a link to that video so we could see it. The main thing is that Windows is a GUI, Graphical User Interface. Could be the window on top of the game's window was opened after the game and is set to "Always on top", but that's just a guess as a large number of games want all the resources available for themselves.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor scans your PC for potential compatibility issues and lets you know about your Windows 7 upgrade options. Within minutes, you'll get a report that tells you if your PC meets the system requirements, if any known compatibility issues with your hardware, devices, and installed programs are found, and gives guidance on what to do to before installing Windows 7 on your PC.

I've tried searching, but to be honest I'm not quite sure how to word it and haven't been able to come up with much.

Essentially, I'm looking for a program that will introduce friction into Windows. As in, if your dragging a window and you let go it will keep sliding, or possibly collision detection, etc, or something similar. Hopefully that isn't too vague, if anyone has any ideas that would be great!

I'm not sure if this is old news, but the last few days I have bin upgrading and fresh installing my friends and family laptops and PC's with Windows 10 via my USB stick and some asked about the serial key so I had a look around.
This little program I found gives you the serial key plus tells you the OEM key you have from ur previous OS.ProduKey - Recover lost product key (CD-Key) of Windows/MS-Office/SQL Server

Answer:Windows 10 key (link inside)

Yeah this has been discussed already since the launch. Have used it myself, but here it shows generic RTM product keys, even on my laptop that doesn't run the Insider Preview. So this doesn't work (for everyone).
When you upgrade your Windows 8 device to Windows 10 while logged in with your Microsoft account, the product key is saved in the cloud. So whenever you want to do a reinstall/clean install, just skip the product activation and log in with your Microsoft account.

I am trying to upgrade win 7 home to pro. Unfortunately, the system hangs when it tries to boot off the win 7 dvd (both 32 and 64 bit, but works fine with a linux install dvd).

Can I log into win 7 home, and then run the setup file form the dvd? This launces fine, but I was wondering if there would be any problem upgrading siince the HDD is already mounted...

You should boot from the DVD. You can format and get a good clean install.
From windows you cannot format, the results may not be as good.
Bottom line, yes you can boot from windows.

i tested a pre-activated pirated Windows 8.1 in a VM ; i did a preventive scan with some AVs

EAM found 36 threats, some inactive backdoor/trojans , one dormant ransomware (surely waiting to be activated remotely) , some hacked registry keys that :

- disabled/disallowed to run several famous AVs or malware-killers (MSE/Windows 8 defender, KIS , Avira, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SAS, BD, Avast, combofix, gmer, etc...etc...);
- blocked the advanced functions of Task Manager or Regedit
- disabled group policies and other functions

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware v2 couldn't run, expected because the reg keys.
HMP could run and its scans found only 5 of those threats. (some registry keys and backdoor/trojans)
WSA could run and found 2 threats (the backdoor/trojans) , it was expected that WSA missed the reg keys since it works mostly on active threats.

all this to say, if you use a cracked OS , be sure it is released by a renown serious grey hat hack club and even you will have lot of forensic to do.

Hello everyone. My name is Joni1692 and I'm having a lot of problems with my laptop. My laptop is a Toshiba.
If you click above, you will see the type of laptop I have.
A couple of months ago,my laptop was badly damaged by three viruses which had got in the windows files.
The antivirus was able to detect them but it could not remove them. One of them had infected 'explorer.exe'
but it couldn't remove them since they were in the windows files. So I formated it.
Now,to clear things up a bit, what the viruses did was that the computer would get up to loading the windows files, and than it would restart cause of failure.
After formatting it worked fine for a couple of months. Then the same viruses did the same thing. So I reformated and once more it worked again.
Now,today the computer has the same routine. It goes up to the windows loading stage and restarts cause of failure.I can't get to safe mode, last good known configuration won't work and I can't even format with the cd of windows. You'll ask why.Because it won't recognize the hard drive which according to me it's quite strange.

As you can see here, the partition parts are shown. To me,the partition is not shown and I can't seem to find it.
P.s:I forgot to mention the windows operating systems. So firstly there was win XP,then Windows Vista.

Any help would be appreciated.

Microsoft testing louder and more obnoxious ads - aka "Hero Ads" in Bing Bing Smart Search on Windows 8.1 (this is the default search behavior)

Seriously, Microsoft? Charge for an OS and then thank your customers by bombing them with giant full page ads when all they're trying to do is locate a file on their harddrive. Sure it can be disabled in settings by someone savvy enough, but MS knows many people aren't and they're banking on that which is why they make this the default behavior.

Another reason I'm staying put on Windows 8.0 + Ex7ForW8 to avoid Microsoft's ever-encroaching Metro, SpyDrive, online services and advertising bloat.

After a certain period of time of having certain programs (including Notepad++ and Inkscape among others) open, coming back to and clicking anywhere in that window causes it to immediately minimise, as though I'd clicked on the window that is actually behind it. Using a keyboard shortcut to bring up a Save As box lets me interact with that box but as soon as it's gone, I continue to have the problem and the only solution is to close the program and re-open it again. The time needed for the program to be open seems to vary from 30 minutes to several hours. It has not happened whilst I've been actively using one of the programs but when I've used some other windows and come back to it.

Windows Shell Vulnerability, Fix Inside

A recently discovered vulnerability in Windows Shell allows remote code execution on affected computer systems if exploited correctly. A security advisory that was posted yesterday on Microsoft?s Technet website confirms limited, targeted attacks that are exploiting a vulnerability in Windows Shell and the parsing of .lnk files.
Attackers could exploit the vulnerability to infect Windows operating systems during connection of removable drives, if autoplay is enabled on the system. The attack uses a specifically prepared lnk-file, containing code that is executed because Windows Shell does not parse that parameter sufficiently.
Affected are all Microsoft operating systems since (and including) Windows XP. Microsoft mentions other attack scenarios besides removable devices. The vulnerability can also be exploited via WebDAV or network shares.

On Oct22 I updated 1703 to 1709 and windows.old was created, as expected. 20gig.
I did not get rid of it yet - just watching for it disappearing in 10 days, but it's still here.

Now, things get insteresting: Yesterday I noticed there is stuff written to it on Nov4.
2 directories: Software distribution and in system32/driverstore/filerepository with 25 files.

Today, Nov7, filerepository vanished. And Software distribution has 19 files.
So much for a static state of windows.old. That's a mystery to me.
What's going on? If I wanted (I don't) to revert back to 1703 - how can that be done when it changes?

What is your Anti-Virus program? How do you connect to the internet, is it Wireless or Wired? If Wired, update your Network Adapters driver. If you have a name brand computer (Dell, HP etc) go to the computer manufacturers Support/Download Drivers site and type in your Service Tag or Make and Model # and download the Network Adapter for your model. If you use Bit Defender AV:
Go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. In the Network Connections, Right click the Local Area Connection/Properties/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Use other IP address....uninstall the anti virus security NDIS (Antivirus) mini filter...etc...

With some of the buttons/drop down menus i've seen on my computer get cut off.
I do not know what is causing this. I attatched a photo of an example of one of the many problems that occur like this. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Answer:Problem with buttons inside windows.

I think it might have something to do with your theme that you have installed.
In the personalization settings, switch back to a Windows default theme. Does the problem still exist?

Free to download and use, once installed, it runs as a service from the notification area of the taskbar, measuring chip temperatures from various sensors on your system.

So I got new parts today (they are in my parts) Im also new to Windows 7 (hi all).
I originally had windows vista......and it was causing a TON of errors, I mean i got like.....4 BSOD's and I play a game called Heroes of Newerth (It's like DOTA if you've ever heard of it) and the game crashed on me like 6 times in game......needless to say it was bad.

Since our University lets u get a free copy of windows 7 (one per person) I decided to try that. I played around 5 hours of the same game, no problems whatsoever.

But I did get one crash (BSOD) But I have the memory dump file. as well as the debugging report (with proper symbols)

i tried uploading the memory.dmp file but it wont let me. so i'll post what I have (from the debugger MS provides, with the symbols file properly done)

I've recently built, delided and overclocked my first pc. Everything was running just fine, until recently, I found out that pressing restart inside the windows start menu will shutdown windows, but will always freeze when it starts up again on the spinning dots. It freezes even if I overclock by 100Mhz. It freezes when I manually set multiplier to 45 even though its a 4.5Ghz cpu. The pc starts up just fine, runs just fine, and shuts down just fine. This only happens when I use the restart option inside windows or when an update causes it to restart itself.

I have my cpu OCed to 4.9Ghz at 140mV offset LLC3. Under load it's doing 1.28v. Temps never hit over 79C in p95. My OC is stable for 10 Hours p95 blend, 11 hours p95 small FFT, and an overnight memtest86. It has never crashed on me inside of windows.

Googling tells me that the cpu can't handle the overclock, but I'm passing these stress tests with flying colors. Not only that, but manually setting the cpu to 4.5Ghz results in the same lockup when restarting inside windows. This doesn't happen when I set multiplier to 44 or below, or on stock settings. I've tried updating BIOS from 1.4 to 2.0. I've tried reseating the cpu. Nothing works. Most times, it would restart, and get stuck on the spinning dots and do nothing. Sometimes, it would BSOD after getting stuck on the spinnin... Read more

I'm running Win 7 Professional and have Virtual Windows XP set up.
I want to use a screen capture program so that I can create a demo
on how to upgrade from XP to W7.

Is it possible to use my Win 7 Upgrade CD and go through an Upgrade
of XP within the Virtual Windows XP? I realize that I won't be able to
activate W7 after the install (because I don't have a second licence)
but that's OK. I just want to capture the process.

What would be really great about this is that I can run a screen capture
program outside of the Virtual XP and then be able to capture the upgrade
process live. Even the Win 7 installation restarts would be captured because
the capture program would just be capturing the contents of a Window.

Answer:upgrading XP to Win 7 inside Virtual Windows xp?

I haven't done it, but you should be able to. What are you using to virtualize XP ??

Hello there
I have this problem on windows 7 where my computer will freeze randomly, and completely halt. If audio is playing it will just go crazy! It never seems to do this when i was playing a game , but mainly when i was on Youtube or something simlar.
Now i have a problem ALSO with installing windows xp , as it freezes on 34 minutes of the install , when it says "installing devices". Apparently this is due to a hardware problem.

But the strange part is i am using Ubuntu at the moment , and there are NO problems , with freezing or anything!

Just wondering if there is anyway i can find out the problem! Does Windows use something Ubuntu doesn't?

Answer:ps2 keyboard not work inside windows!

Dang coincidence! I had a new mobo and cpu recently, and this was exactly the same prob I had then, only it was mouse and keyboard that gave me probs. It may well be a diffeent prob, but anyways...
as it works in BIOS, and pre- windows, it seems the kboard in itself is OK. I would suggest booting up into windows, but start in safe mode. Hopefully, this will detect the kboard, but leave it for a minute or 5 without doing ANYTHING- no mouse, no kboard, no nothing, unless you get a box up about drivers or similar. Then restart, and touch wood youe kboard will be back.
Hope it helps

Hi all,
I purchased a Win8.1 Lenovo desktop two years ago and have upgraded to Win10. The capabilities of this PC have mostly been outstripped by my needs so I've decided to build a PC from scratch that is capable of the work I demand. I will be salvaging some bits from the Lenovo, such as HDD and processor, so it will be bricked. I want to pull the Windows license from my Lenovo and install it onto my new, custom PC.
I cannot find the Windows 8.1 product key on the PC itself nor in the box/paperwork. Does anyone know of a way to identify the product inside windows?

Answer:How can I identify Product Key from inside Windows 10?

The product key will be embedded into the hardware if it uses UEFI and cannot be transferred to a new PC.

The six Windows Vista variants are: Windows Starter 2007; Windows Vista Enterprise; Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista ultimate, and Windows Vista Business.

Also on the list are two additional releases, Windows Vista Home Basic N and Windows Vista Business N. The "N" releases are those which do not include Media Player.

Microsoft currently offers six core Windows XP SKUs: The line up includes XP Home, Professional, Media Center, Tablet PC, and Professional x64, and Windows XP Starter. (Microsoft also offers "N" versions of its XP Home and XP Professional releases, as stipulated by the European antitrust regulators.)

With Vista, there will not be separate Tablet, Media Center or x64 SKUs, said Barry Goffe, director of Windows client product management. All of the planned Vista versions, except Windows Vista Starter, will be available in both 32- and 64-bit flavors. All SKUs will integrate Internet Explorer 7.0, the new Vista desktop search, parental controls and Windows Defender antispyware technology. And all of the Windows Vista business SKUs will embed features designed to appeal to small/mid-size businesses (SMBs), Goffe said, obviating the need for a separate Vista small-business variant.

The new line up is "more focused on how people will use their PCs, rather than around hardware types," Goffe explained.,2180,1931478,00.asp

Hi there. Today I decided to get a new theme for my web browser (Firefox) so I did. I found one that I liked and downloaded it and installed it. At the same time I was cleaning games and apps I was not using. As I was browsing trough the list of apps i noticed that the pop up box of Skype (when someone signs in) has bold font. I clicked and opened Skype to discover that the font there is bold as well. Then I saw it on Facebook actually every web page has a bold font now.. Some other apps i use (Hamachi, Antispy, etc..) show up the same way. I googled this issue but all the solutions did not help me so far.

I want to say again that my dialog boxes, system windows and desktop icons are fine like they were. This appears in app windows. here are a few snaps

Hi, I'm just looking for advice on running Windows 7 Professional inside a virtual machine. I'd like to know what kind of performance I can expect from the following applications and others of their class.

Capture One (
Adobe CS5 (Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, Flash)
Microsoft Office 2010
Sony Vegas
Games requiring DirectX 9+

Basically, I'm done with malware, long boot times, and huge system overhead and would like to switch to Ubuntu for my everyday computing, web surfing, writing, media consumption, etc. and fire up Windows in a VM only when I absolutely need it. As the list above implies I do lean pretty heavily on the processor and video card when I'm working or playing, and I'm wondering how Virtual Box would handle it.

Thanks in advance for any input you can offer.

1. Is there a way to enable a dialog confirming log off? I use the classic start menu configuration (I find it much easier to use), with "Log off ..." enabled. However, accidentally pressing this instantly logs the user off, instead of prompting for an OK like XP and earlier. This is really frustrating sometimes. Any advice?

2. Vista is BSODing randomly and at random times. The default Business 32-bit Dell install that came with my laptop was REALLY bad (it would BSOD literally every 15-20 minutes, each time with a different, random error), so I upgraded to 64-bit Business. The BSODs are much less frequent, but they're still occuring sometimes. Most prevelant is during boot or right after logon. I have all the latest updates, including the non-Windows Update reliability ones. There seems to be no pattern to when they occur, and the error is different each time. Has anyone else had similar problems with Dell laptops and Vista?

Other than that my system is running fine. Loving Vista, except for these few little annoyances!

"little annoyances" Frequent crashes are pretty major. Click the start button and search for Reliability and Performance Monitor (just type rel and it should be the first option). Click Reliability Monitor on the left tab and post the cause of the failures if you need help sorting it out. There is no reason why Vista x64 won't run stable, other than an add on program or bad hardware (or malware infestation).

I don't see a policy in Vista for a default prompt when logging off. There might be one or a registry setting but I can't find it.

Hello,I am helping a friend with his computer and he had the Windows Enterprise Suite malware that kept saying he had issues. I used Malwarebytes' removal tool and it found 815 infections. I thought it removed everything but I guess when he gets online, it keeps trying to send his browser to places like and things like that and he literally can't get a window to load.I ran Hijackthis and below is what I got..any help ASAP would be great. Hi all,
I was hoping someone maybe able to come up with some ideas for me here of what to do next. (I am starting this in the Operating Systems forum, but it might be a Security issue?) We have a machine here in the office that has begun acting strangely.
Machine Specifications:
Gateway Pentium 4
CPU : 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4
Memory: 128 Mb
Network Card 3Com EtherLink PCI
Network Speed: 100 Mb/s
OS Version: Windows 2000
Service Pack : SP3
IE Version 6.0.2800.1400
Volume: C:\ 35.54 Gb NTFS
Free Space: 24.67 Gb NTFS
As of yesterday morning, the machine is hanging (screen freezing, no response to keyboard or mouse) for up to five minutes at a time. The machine then returns to normal. This is happening every 2, 5 or 7 minutes (frequently enough to be a complete pain).

I downloaded a stinger.exe from McAfee which ran successfully nothing appeared on this. The Virus checker is up to date. All the machines, including this one are online 24/7 via an ADSL connection coming through a router a third party company installed and maintain the ADSL so I have no details on the firewall, but apparently (?) we are locked down tight.

One other thing though user says this problem began yesterday after an automatic Windows update.
Right click My Computer , System Properties General indicates Service Pack 3.
But Control Panel Add / Remove Programs indicates SP4 is installed? (or at least available for removal)

I have already run Hijack This but I am not sure if it indic... Read more

This is my first post as a new member. I've been directed here by a friend saying you guys are really good at fixing problems.
The story begins with a new computer. I got a custom built AMD 3200+ system, with an eVGA motherboard and eVGA7800GT vid card, 2GB OCZ Value Ram, 200GB Maxtor HDD, and a floppy drive.

I had Windows XP installed on it, along with tons of games, and various other applications, and most importantly all my university work. Recently the OS got corrupted, according to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. Instead of paying countless dollars for a Best Buy Geek to fix my comp, I decided I would buy a new HDD instead, install Windows XP, then back up all the data I needed.

The plan started off nicely. I got a 200GB Seagate SATA2 drive and was able to install XP with minimal fuss. I installed my vidcard drivers. Then I updated my Windows OS with their autoupdate program, including SP2. Following that, I was not able to boot normally. It would hang on the loading screen of XP.

I booted in safe mode, used the system restore function to before SP2, then started up normally. I reinstalled SP2, and now the same problem persists. I'm completely lost at what has happenned, seeing as how this should be a clean installation of XP. I find it odd that I can't install SP2 normally, as I had done earlier with my previous HDD. I have attached and I will list my Hijackthis log.

Thanks to everyone who read through all this and is trying to help.

I've asked this question in several other forms & constantly get misunderstood. I know how to change the sounds of the PC,what I want to do is add my own "events" in there. For instance have the PC play a sound when I start control panel, or when I open Win amp, or when windows finishes defrag,or whatever "event" I choose.    I can get the "event " to show up but not to actually play the sound I assign it,even though it acts as though it is playing the sound.I've read things on a "pszSounds" but am totally confused as to how & where to apply this, if that is in fact what I need to do.So can anyone tell me how this is done in as detailed information as possible.I'm pretty good with computers ,but sometimes I'm a little slow on the uptake,(if you know what I mean) !      I'm running Windows 7, service pack 1,it's up to date as of 30 min ago. It's a Vision PC,with an Intel desktop board DG41RQ,running Intel dual core E5300 at 2.6GHz with 4GB DDR2 800MHz PC2-6400 Ram.I have installed a 24 Bit 5.1 surround sound Star tech card,I've also installed an Evga Ge Force 9500 GT 1GB DDR2 PCI,I don't do any gaming though. Answer:Wanting to add my own Events to sounds inside windows?

You cannot add new events... at least, you cannot add events that are triggered by applications that don't know about it specifically. In order for a event sound to be played when you start- say, winamp, something has to basically say "hey, windows, this event occured, make the appropriate sound for it".There is no code in winamp- or any other application, for that matter- that is coded to trigger your custom event. You can hack in new events via the registry and utilities and whatnot, but unless an application actually invokes those event sounds, they are never used.

Hey everyone!

I recently got a new computer, an Asus Zenbook UX302lg, and let's just say it's been a whirl of problems. I've solved most of the original issues, but one's now popped up and it's been bugging me for a few hours!

My windows store DOES open without hiccup. However, once it's inside the screen, everything I click on does not respond - I try to update to 8.1 by clicking on the box, and the box gets smaller indicating that I've clicked on it, but nothing happens. Similarly, this is the case for EVERY single app - none of them respond to my clicks.

At the start, I thought perhaps it was my anti-virus software blocking it, so I disabled it (it was AVG 2014) but that didn't work. I uninstalled it (getting desperate) and didn't work.

I searched online for possible solutions - I downloaded the Windows app troubleshooter - didn't work, I reset the store cache - didn't work.

It may have something to do with the fact that when I first opened windows store, while everything DID WORK, updates on apps wouldn't work and it would be stuck on pending - I searched online but couldn't resolve it, until bam I got a notification saying that all my updates had been installed a few hours later - with me doing nothing. I thought I got pretty lucky. My computer's been through a couple of mandatory updates since then, and now today after I tried to update to 8.1 (the first time it's showed up in the store as well) it no longer works.

Any advice for a fix would be very much appreciat... Read more

It looks like this:

I recently did a fresh install of Windows XP (+Service Pack 2) and since then many programs (i.e. games) have been crashing repeatedly. All of them with the exact same error and the same characterics as well (the program aborts, the error appears, and a black square takes up 75% of the screen).

What could this be?

Answer:Windows XP keeps crashing applications, error inside

What video card do you have? Did you install the latest driver for it? It may be an issue with the video card's driver (since your getting a black square).

It could also be a heat issue. Have you overclocked your CPU or video card?

Also, have you tried uninstalling SP2, to see if SP2 itself, is the problem?

I'm looking for an automated Windows backup solution that will preserve the directory structure of the files on the server.

here's the use case:
In our current setup, we have a set of SAMBA shares that include VIDEOS, IMAGES, AUDIO, etc.

The benefit here is that my wife and can put files out there in the appropriate directory and then I can browse to that location from my laptop or desktop and find what I'm looking for.

We've tried SyncToy in the past but got burned by the bugs covering directory merging from multiple sources and number of files per directory.

I tried the built-in backup from Windows 7 and it works great, actually, but doesn't preserve the directory structure on the server -- it creates new files that only have meaning to Windows.

Anyone else have a recommendation on a solution that I can automated on the clients and which maintains directory structure on the server?

Linux or Windows doesn't matter -- I can install either.

Answer:Looking for An Automated Windows Backup Solution (more inside)

I use They also recently released Genie Timeline, which works similar to the Apple's Time Capsule, but it only makes sense to use it if you need to keep multiple versions of the same files. I use Genie Backup Manager Professional 8.0. It works pretty well. You have full control of the settings and can customize them in almost any imaginable way (I think they offer a free download to try it).

Your system should also be showing as being non-genuine - but you haven't mentioned that!

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report.

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hi everyone, I am having a great time exploring Ubuntu, having installed it as a download to Windows7 with Wubi. The concern I am having now is, is it ok to run the 'gufw' firewall for Ubuntu because I still have Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 in Windows. And I would also feel safer with an antivirus for Ubuntu too for online banking etc. Apparently, I have read that Windows recognises Ubuntu as a different OS whereas in fact it is only a download and that is what I can't relate to this issue.
Read more:

Answer:Ubuntu installed inside Windows 7 ... antivirus needed or not?

wubi is simply an installer for Windows. Once the installation has completed and you select Ubuntu, you are actually using Ubuntu (as opposed to Windows). Therefore, I see no reason why you should not use the gufw firewall. However, if you're using a router for your Internet connection, it should have a built in firewall, so a further firewall shouldn't be necessary.
As regards anti-virus software, it's not necessary at this present time. Whether that will alter in the future, who knows, but Linux is simply not at risk in the same way and you don't have to nursemaid it like Windows.
If you're really unhappy about that, then clamav is a powerful Linux anti-virus application, but be aware, you won't have fancy a GUI, as it's written primarily for Linux email servers.
I've been using Linux for about 5 years now (for all intents and purposes as an exclusive system) and have never needed to use anti-virus software on my desktop production machine. But I do have it on my email servers, as Windows infested emails are still very much the norm. This is purely to protect my Windows users connecting to the servers.
Use Ubuntu, relax and enjoy :-)

I reinstalled Windows 7 yesterday. Upon reconnecting another drive which contained my personal files from a previous installation, the startup took ages and the drive became inaccessible after I logged in. I have two partitions on this drive, one containing my files and one containing old program files. The drive containing program files can be accessed just fine.

Here are some observations, details and steps I took so far:
The drive IS accessible through Linux. In fact, all (or most) of my files are intact.
chkdsk /r on Windows results in 10% read of the USN Journal, then fails at step 3 of 5. chkdsk /f fails at step 3 of 3, same issue with the USN Journal.
Right clicking on the "Local Disk" (it used to be called Files) and going to properties is so slow that I'd just stick with the command prompt.
It's an NTFS drive at 2.5 TB. Not very old.
This is not a driver issue, since half the drive managed to be recognized. Drivers were also update on reboot and that didn't help.

So my questions are as follows:
Am I in for a complete reformat? I have over 400 GB of personal files, and I made the mistake of not backing them up as time went, so I'd try and avoid reformatting at all cost. If it's absolutely necessary, I can try and back up everything useful.
Would this be a bad sector issue, or a USN issue. If it's an USN issue, is it safe to rebuild a USN Journal on this drive using fsutil, since the old one refuses to be read?

Answer:Drive is Semi-Inaccessible through Windows (Details inside)

might be a obvious answer but im not very clued up on my pc's I know a few things but not everything

thanks in advance

P.S sorry for the bad grammar

Answer:Running windows 7 but thinking of using xp home premium, look inside.

If it's licensed to the same PC and you use the exact same version, yes. With Factory OEM XP you must use an OEM channel installer whereas with Win7 you can use the same isntaller for either OEM or retail.

So you'd want XP Home OEM with SP3.

If forced to download from a torrent make sure you read the comments closely to see that nothing like a crack is added as this will defeat the purpose of using the license you legally own and can be seeded with infection.

Hello WindowsTenForums

I was wondering if anybody can help me with this problem I seem to have, I used to run windows 7 flawlessly on my SSD with no problems at all, I upgraded to windows 10 a while back and that was fine. But for some reason a few months on windows 10 would just freeze up on me and I was unable to open programs, shut down. It would just completely freeze.

So I did a fresh install of windows 10 on my ssd and it worked fine again for 2 months.

Then again today it updated automatically and restarted and it keeps freezing again, and when I try to boot my computer up sometimes it loads windows and sometimes it does not.

The SATA Controller is looking for hard disk, and it takes a long time to find anything. Then it finds the hdd's and my ssd and it says loading operating system. Then the dots go like this . . . . . . . . . . FAILED TO BOOT FROM DISK

I ran a CHKSDK /r and /f and that seems to help the problem for sometime. But then its just a matter of time before the problem returns.

Not sure what the problem is.. ?

SSD Dying ? But if that is the case why did it work fine for months after a fresh format?

Sata cable?

Mobo dying?

Answer:Windows 10 (Disk boot failure) more info inside

Please fill in your system spec's, make of mobo, age etc. this will help to determine what could be your problem.

I'm also having issues with my desktop, which started after 10586.0 was installed, that is a few days later, lots of freezing, have to do a cold reboot, there seems to be no reason why.

I run a dual boot, one with an older HDD running with the insider preview, and a SSD for my main windows 10.

Both are at the latest update 10586.14.

My older HDD runs just fine with no lockups, which is almost 10 years old.

Anyway the SSD is 6 months old and hopefully is not failing.

Have been doing the online update with my SSD, but since the problem started I've done sfc and dism checks, formatted twice, but the freezing continues intermittently.... we seem to have a similar problem.

Flopflip welcome to the forums, there are lots of helpful people on here.

I have an SSD drive mounted as a secondary master on my motherboard that has lost performance. I did have some things on the drive that I ended up deleting because load times were painfully long. I did not format the drive using the format options in Windows as I know this further degrades performance for SSDs, but there is nothing on the drive at all right now.

My question is, is there a way to secure erase the drive while still inside Windows? All the info I've found regarding secure erasing a drive has to to with having to boot the computer with some disc (insert title), unplugging the sata cable to the drive and plugging it back in, running said program, and erasing the drive. I understand this if the drive is the Primary Master and Windows is to be installed on the drive, but this is not the case for me.

Is there a way to do this inside Windows since its a secondary drive, meaning Windows is on a completely different drive, or is there a program or something for SSDs where you can restore performance inside Windows.

I have a Win7 Home Premium OS installed on an LG laptop - original windows that came with the laptop.

A few weeks ago my HD crashed, I sent the laptop for a warranty repair. The HD was replaced and Windows re-installed. Since then i receive a message every few hours saying that my windows is not genuine.

I ran MGA and these are the results:

Answer:Getting random BSOD, Windows 7 Ultimate (dumps inside)

Hello. You can see this thread to try to alleviate your problem. Stop overclocking if you are, for anything. Make sure you're running the latest video driver.

Update these drivers to the latest or uninstall them from the system if unimportant:

Hi everyone,I dont want to just delete system files and end processes on my own. I don't want to mess anything up. Norton antivirus finds it but cant fix it and housetrend antivirus doesnt detect it. I have used adware but cant install spybot. I dont understand why norton didnt pick it up because of autoprotect though. I hope to install a different antivirus after this gets fixed (after removing norton) and a firewall.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 5:08:40 PM, on 1/6/2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16574)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exeC:\WINDOWS\StartupMonitor.exeC:\Program Files\PowerMenu\PowerMenu.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exeC:\Program Files\CyberLink\Shared files\Ric... Answer:Trojan Smss.exe Inside Of Windows\system32\exec2.exe

Hello viperguts and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware inthe log. It is clean. smss.exe is a valid Windows file. The one showing int he log is the correct one.Let's try a different scanner and see if that shows anything. Download WinPFind35u.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind35u on your desktop.Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind35U.exe to start the program. In the Drivers section click on Non-Microsoft.Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:Reg - BotCheck
Reg - Desktop Components
Reg - Disabled MS Config Items
Reg - Software Policy Settings
File - Additional Folder Scans
Do not change any other settings. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.Let it run unhindered until it finishes. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.Use the Add Reply button and Copy/Paste the information back here. I will review it when it comes in. If, after posting, the last line is not < End of Report > then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts or attach it as a file.Cheers.... Well, I don't consider it a MAJOR MAJOR earth-shattering bug as it's a specific one but, even so, it does exist on both the machines I currently have Windows 7 on. I'll say they're both running a certain version of Windows 7 x64 and leave it at that. Now, about that bug...

If you open an Admin Command Prompt, and issue the following command:

chkdsk <driveletter>: /r

it seems as if chkdsk just goes a bit bonkers in terms of memory usage but only on non-system drives - my system drive is C:, and the command works fine on it, but on non-system drives, internal, external, it doesn't matter, formatted with NTFS, it goes a bit insane. How insane? Well, here's what it looked like after just running the command for 30 seconds (then killing the process):

So, it's worth checking out if you happen to be running a certain version of Windows 7 x64, at least. I do believe the issue exists in both x86 and x64 versions, but I can't verify that as I only use x64 versions.

It doesn't affect the system drive, as noted, and it does not affect FAT/FAT32 drives either. But I tested it on my secondary partition as well as a 160GB NTFS-formatted external USB drive and it happens regardless, just not on the system partition C:. It occurs when chkdsk hits Stage 4 - that's when you'll really see the RAM usage skyrocket fast. If the process is allowed to continue, it will consume all the RAM you've got, and finally end with a BSOD ... Read more

Dear Tenforums,

As I was doing some defragging i noticed that several of my most fragmented files were stashed away in the windows.old folder. I thought this folder was for recovering old installation and personal files? ain't that the thought of said folder?

Moving on, as I want to clear up some disk space and up until now never had any use (atleast that i know of? enlighten me if u want) the windows.old folder; i figred i'd delete it; or atleast delete some of the "big files" that came up during my defraging, as some were old install files and movies etc.

I then noticed after streaming a netflix movie earlier today (before defragging) that it was actually stored inside the TEMP folder INSIDE the windows.old folder.
I then proceeded to "run" --> TEMP and %TEMP% and noticed these folders were pretty bare in terms of content.
Thus, although i might be wrong, it appears as my windows have put the TEMP FOLDERS inside the windows.old folder, rather than in the "new" windows folder etc.

This thus makes me a bit scared to delete/cleanup files and/or the whole windows.old folder.
How shall i proceed? will deleting/cleaning it up screw something over in terms of me "loosing out on my temp folder" etc. etc.

Answer:W10 stashed TEMP folders inside windows.old - how to proceed?

I believe windows will be old as Windows.old folder to store temp for first 30 days.. until your Rollback period expires (30 days)..
if you delete windows.old folder.. nothing bad will happen just ... you wont be able to revert back to old windows version.
