Preferred Solution: Complete reset windows 8.1 networking question..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys, i found this info form a website on how to completely reset your network.. take a look at this and can someone update it to comply with windows 8.1 64bit?

-what is missing for windows 8.1 64bit to totally reset your network.. this probably should be a sticky at some point too as everybody should know this info..

*these are commands you would type into a administrator command prompt..

UPDATE: On Windows 7, you'll need to do this to reset your network adapters:

ipconfig /flushdnsnbtstat -Rnbtstat -RRnetsh int reset allnetsh int ipv4 resetnetsh int ipv6 resetnetsh winsock reset
Now, reboot and pray. Possibly not in that orde

Well, when you hit Diagnose this connection, that is what it basically does, but an interesting idea.

You might also add: "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew"

https://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=37620
ipconfig /flushdns
When DNSCache service is disabled, this problem is gone, it is also recommended for security reasons.
nbtstat -Rnbtstat -RR
Unless you have DSL connection or using file sharing, NetBIOS can be disabled, security reasons as well.

Basicly my comp has too many problems i can't be stuffed fixing it, and i have nothing important to lose...I have my HP recovery CDs(all 17 =P) and want to completely delete all files and reinstall my system..
Can someone please give me step by step instructions on how to do this?

Also I ahve had someone install a version of AVG 8.0 free which doesn't expire as it has a liscense.. can someone please tell me how to get this back after my complete reinstall if i keep my liscense number.

Thanks already.

Answer:Complete reset of windows XP

This link will guide you through a complete reinstall of WinXP: *link*

As for the AVG thing: record you license number (on a piece of paper, or whatever) and when you are finished reinstalling XP, go to Grisoft's website and install the trial version AVG 8.0. When it prompts you to register or buy a license, enter you license number that you recorded earlier.

The subject pretty much says it all. I have a Lenovo Yoga, and had to do a Factory Reset. Now I'm getting an error that it's not activated. I've gotten the key off the computer itself, and done the Microsoft Activation Center's thing, and couldn't get anywhere. This product is legit, it didn't go anywhere, so why am.i having so much difficulty??

Backstory: For X-mas we purchased a gently handy-downed Dell Inspiron 3520. I factory reset it so that I could put in our information, I also put on ESET Anti-Virus. I then downloaded the Windows 10 Activator, it ran its process says everything was fine and it started to download. Everything was going great, there was no issues until it came to the final phases which was the reboot. For over 3 hours it just showed nothing more than black screen with Dell Logo.

I call Dell and after 30 minutes they say its a software issue and that I'd have to pay $200+ for them to fix it over the phone with me. I tell them I can't afford that and we disconnect. So I go into the start up system and attempt to Factory Restore it again, it starts the process goes all the way through and then it goes back to the black screen with Dell logo only this time a dialogue box pops up. Its named Install Windows and it says, "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation."

I've tried F8, but its not recognizing it, or even trying to open the command prompt and following other steps I found online such as typing in 'oobe' isn't working.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer:Trying to Factory Reset get this "Windows could not complete

What's the exact service tag/serial number and express service code number on that Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop?

What Windows 10 "activator" are you referring to, and where did you download it from?

The Envy dv7 was not working properly and decided to do a factory reset. When through all the steps and once the process started, it keeps stopping with the following message: Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this compute, restart the installation. Turning it on and off will give me the same error message. How would I go about installing windows when it does not give me an option anymore? I did the following already: Restore BIOS default settingsTest the hard drive using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI Any other suggestions? Thank you.

The size of my main drive is 178GB. I performed a complete PC backup, and the backup directory totals 153GB. Is this normal? Is the backup program compressing the files?

Answer:Vista x64 Ultimate; question about Windows Complete Backup PC

Compression is a normal "feature" of most backup software, so yes, I'd bet it's got some level of compression going on. Not everything will compress, of course. If the majority of that content in the 178GB is movie or music files, that stuff isn't going to get smaller, but most everything related to the OS itself or applications can and will compress to roughly a 2:1 ratio.

As long as you verify the backup after it's done (it's worth the extra time, seriously) you should be just fine.

Answer:Hp reset will not complete

Hello @ShellyWing If your PC was upgraded from previous Windows version or older build, it is known issue that this operation may have corrupted the recovery partition, therefore your inability to complete the restore. However, it may also appear due to other software reasons or due to faulty hardware. - Let me know if your PC previously had older version of Windows (e.g. 7 or 8) ?If you used previous Win version, do you prefer Win 10 or your older Win version ? - please, perform some basic hardware checks 1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button2. Power it on.2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).This should open a HP Startup Menu 3. Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test. This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXUp43ahHA If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD and RAM check. Let me know the test results. Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

Question: Complete reset

Is there a way to reset whole computer to return it factory settings?
Will I loose some programs?
I am mostly worried about bellsouth dsl thing
System restore?

Answer:Complete reset

A system restore unless on a recently purchased system would only bring you back to the beginning of the calendar month if the restore points are there to use. With the recovery disk for Windows and any other software disks included you then use that to see factory defaults and lose anything you installed since that time. The dsl would have to reinstalled as part of recovery or reinstalling Windows.

Put simply, I own both a desktop and a laptop. the "homegroup" is a fine option for a simple video and music transfer from one to another, but what i want is for my laptop to have complete access to any file in my desktop unit, up to and including it's operating system folder. (no real need for that location, but that's the level of access i want, if possible) what's the best way to go about doing this?
the desktop and laptop are both windows 7. they connect via the "homegroup" option just fine, but that connection seems too limited.

Answer:Networking: Complete access

When you set up a Homegroup it usually will give you access to the entire User folder of the other Homegroup machines. You can get to the User folder by going to "Network>User Name-PC > Users "folder">User name.

If you want total access to the entire drive the following link shows you how. Although this is not a very safe way to share because an attacker could gain access to the entire drive so use at your own risk.

Of course you can make the drive secure again by simply removing "Everyone" again. This is done through the Security tab of the actual drive. Link below shows you how.

I installed a Netgear DG834G wireless router so I could link to a second PC. Both PC's can access the 'net via the router (though not at the same time). When I run the Network Setup Wizard I get the message, "Cannot complete the Network Setup Wizard. Other computers cannot connect to the internet through this computer." I'm stumped. Clearly they can both access the 'net, albeit in a limited fashion, via the router but why can't the two PC's to see each other?

I have bought a 3Com router, and am on tiscali broadband. I hav installed the router, and followed the step-by-step instructions, all was well but this morning, I click on the internet explorer icon and it goes to the webpage but says it can't connect as I am offline, whereas before it would connect straight away. Last night I was attempting to set up the laptop to the wireless connection and could not get it to work as it kept showing a bubble at the bottom of the screen saying that it could not find a 'certificate' to connect to 3Com, so I guess I have 2 questions, also I have very basic knowledge of this and don't know what all the letters etc mean which stand for different things, so be warned!

Answer:Please help a complete beginner with networking!

Hi there. It may help to post some further details to sort your problem out. What Operating systems are you using? Are you trying to set up a wireless network? What model number is the modem? What 'letters' do you mean? Basically, the more info the better.

I have a windows 8 laptop that is making no noise whatsoever. Yesterday morning, I go to youtube to do my normal everyday routine of watching videos and video makes no noise. Shrugging it off, I just do a standard turn off turn back on that usually does the trick. I try again and nothing. I go on different websites; nothing. Being pretty tech savvy, I searched for a few hours to no avail so I just preformed a TOTAL reset. Yes, I lost all files and fingers crossed, hoped it would work. Still nothing. I am so frustrated I have no idea what to do.
Heres a screen shot of my device manager.
(Yes, my volume is not on mute and is turnt up to 100%)

Answer:*Urgent* No noise at all, even after complete reset

According to the screen shot everything appears to be normal but what I usually do is shut the computer down then pull the power cord from the back of it, wait about half a minuter then try again. Had you checked that the speakers are plugged into the correct port, usually light green? Have you checked in Control Panel, Sound for the correct output setting? Have you tried a different set of speakers or a headset in the same port?

I was having some minor issues, so I decided to do a "reset my pc". The "lite" procedure...remove the files, reinstall the os,  keep the computer.  I assume that meant clean install, not multiple passes, should complete in a reasonable amount of time.It got to the point where, after restart,  it was showing the percentage of progress, but when I came back to it there was just a black screen.I use my TV as my monitor, so I switched inputs, and for about 5 seconds I could see the little dotted "progress" circle revolving, then disappear. This would repeat every time I switched imports back and forth. After more than an hour, I manually shut it down and started up again. this time a different looking screen appeared than the percentage screen before. A large circle saying it was installing the os, and then started to display the percentage of completion (starting at 5%) and that it would restart several times. So I checked back about 10 minutes later and it was at 9%, so I figured it was ok, crossing my fingers. But now after quite a while (close ti 1 1/2 hours) it is back to the dotted circle, which fades away after about 5 seconds. Is this normal. How long should I wait? Can I ceate a recovery/installatioin disk for my specific unit and start the process over.  My concern was that a disk will not have the drivers I need.

I was able to completely drain the battery and finally able to do a reset that will take it back to the default settings. It has been 4&1/2 hrs since it started, it is at 17% , is that normal?

I have an Acer aspire Windows 7 x64 that was giving me issues so I did a factory reset on it. I've done this before with no problems on this very computer, but during this last time everything seemed to have gone horribly wrong. Everything is running extremely slow and when trying to use an Internet browser it freezes before loading every page but usually load eventually even if it says that it's not responding. Other things won't load and I have no idea what the problem is. When I go on to Firefox which is my primary browser, I get an error saying that the script cannot be read. The error reads as such:Chrome://saff/content/saffplg.js.524I don't know what other information I can give you, this was just such a great computer before and I would really appreciate it if someone can help me get it back in order. I am planning on selling my Sager NP9377 Laptop, it currently has Windows 10 on it. When I go through the Windows 10 Reset and get to end of reset, is it safe to turn off the laptop and then buyer can turn it on and go through initial setup process? How should I go about getting laptop ready for sale? Thoughts and help appreciated

Answer:Windows 10 Reset Question

I'm a really generous guy. What I like to do is at the OOBE setup screen go into audit mode - CTRL + Shift + F3. That logs you in to the built-in administrator account. There you can connect to your Wi-Fi, look in device manager make sure everything has drivers and is good to go. Make sure everything is updated. Just do not let the screensaver activate in Audit Mode! You can even shut down normally and start-up again in audit mode if you need to.

Then when everything is set up to my liking, on the Sysprep screen that opens when you log into audit mode select start up to OOBE and shutdown computer. Everything associated with the built-in administrator account will be erased again - including your WiFi network name and password and the next startup will be to the OOBE screen just like you never logged on. But all the system updates and drivers will be there.

Yes, it is normally safe to just turn off the computer at the first OOBE screen if you want to.

Hello,
I bought my Nokia Lumia 820 secondhand from my neighbour last year, so her email account is the primary one on the phone. Now whenever I try to update any of the apps, having downloaded 8.1, I am given an error message of 80860006, or asked to log in with my neighbour's email account, which as far as I know isn't even active any more.
Oh, and if it turns out that this update was some kind of preview: I would not know about this! I do not have time to go and research every update my phone wants me to do. As far as I'm aware, updates are to fix bugs, improve services and fix vulnerabilities. I don't expect them to be bug free, but this update is horrid. I would like Windows to tell me if things are preview updates or whatever (having read threads where people have updated Lumias and it's been some kind of trial that they're unwitting guinea pigs in).
I have come to the conclusion that the phone needs to be reset to factory settings so that I can put in my own email address, if I'm ever going to get anywhere with these apps. How would I go about doing this? I can email important things from the phone to my email account. Or, failing that, would it be possible for Windows to replace the primary email account the phone was set up with with one that I set up?
I am also experiencing problems where I try to go into network plus on the phone, get a loading screen, and get taken straight back to the settings menu I came from. If anyone knows why this is, I would love to know.

Hi everyone, I have a wireless network at home which is extended using a Netgear Powerline. When I connect to the original wireless network (SKY60571) I have no problem getting internet access, as per the attached thumbnail (SKY60571 - working).

I am trying to troubleshoot my extended portion of the network (NETGEAR), as this shows as as an Unidentified Network and has no internet access - please see the other attached thumbnail (NETGEAR - not working).

My question is, how do I change the NETGEAR network type to Home? I want the settings for NETGEAR in Windows 7 Network and Sharing Centre to be the same as SKY60571 but I cannot find a way to do this.

OK, I have almost gotten this home network figured out, but I am having one problem still. On my laptop, running Windows XP home, I can see both of the other computers I have networked with. I can access the folders I want and all. All three computers I networked can print to the networked printer. Now for the problem. I am running Windows XP on two desktop computers. They can see each other, but neither of them can see the laptop. I have tried all of the troubleshooting techniques in the Help file and get no help.

Also, when I click on My Network Places, I see all three computers' shared document folders on the laptop. On the two desktops, there are only two folders, one for each desktop. When I click on "View workgroup computers", I can see all three computers from any of the three, but from the two desktops I cannot click on the laptop icon and see the folder either. When I click on the Laptop icon, I get a message that says "Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

I have run Network Wizard numerous times, and re-booted each time. I have logged off and back on. I have made sure the folder was set for sharing files. I can't think of anything else to try. Any suggestions?

Answer:Another Windows XP networking question

Two questions - Are the desktop PCs running XP Home or Pro?
Can you ping all three computers between each other? (Start button>Run> ping "IP address" eg ping 194.234.0.122)

If they all ping each other, then they are talking and the problem is elsewhere...if they cannot ping, then it is still a networking problem.

Try manually assigning IP adresses (Contorl Panel>Network Connections
right click on Local Area Network then select Properties. Under TCP/IP's properties set each computer's IP manually to something like 192.168.0.* where star is a number between 1-255 that is different on each machine) Subnet mask defaults to 255.255.255.0 and that is fine.

Hi, i have two computers networked that both have win xp pro.

I started learning about file sharing (i have a linksys router).

I learned you could share a folder on one computer and access it from another.

Then... I learned you could share whole drives!, map them and see all the files, and edit them!

Then I got a little worried as I found out you can map network drives remotely if you know the computer name and computer ip of the remote computer.

I am currently not sharing any folders right now. I learned a little about password protecting in windows xp on a network. I went to control panel, folder view, view, and disabled "Simple File sharing (recommended). This allows me to permit only certain users to access shared folders.

However, I right clicked on my computer, and went to MANAGE. Then I went to SHARED FOLDERS, AND then SHARES, and found out my c drive is AUTOMATICALLY shared under the name "C$"

So i went to one of my computer, went to map network drive. I typed \\othercomputername\C$ ... and tada, the other computer's C drive showed up. BUT, it didn't even ask me for a password!! Can't anyone , with knowledge of my IP, simply do the same thing and hack into my C drive. I am a little worried here. I then switched computers and tried accessing the one I was just on, I used the same command , except I used the other computer's name. This time a username and password dialog window popper up, with the GUEST account.
I know on both ... Read more

Answer:windows xp pro networking question

Most likely the reason the you had access to the other machine is because the user that you logged on machine1 has an account on machine2.

What you may want to increase security is to rename the administrator account to something else.

In my case is the Windows Refresh option pointless? If I have any Windows problems in the future am I better off just using the Windows Reset option instead.
The only thing I can see as a possible advantage of Refresh over a Reset in my case is maybe saving me having to redownload the latest Nvidia graphics drivers and any other updated drivers etc.
Does a Windows Refresh preserve all of the downloaded Windows Updates (in my case on a slow connection about 3 hours of a job including installing them) or even with a Refresh do you end up having to download all the Windows Updates from scratch to bring your system back up to date?

I was wondering...if i say, bought a new toshiba laptop (for example) with windows 10 pre-installed on it by toshiba,
and then let is say i used the windows 10 "reset" feature and had it do a totally clean re-install without saving anything,
well what would the result be?

Would i have a clean fresh copy of windows 10 WITH all the original toshiba added "crapware" (lol)
Or, would i have a PURE copy of windows 10 without that stuff on it (you know, as if i had purchased a copy of windows 10 and installed it which of course would not have any toshiba related stuff the laptop came with).

I was just curious....so that i will know when i buy my next toshiba laptop with 10 already installed on it...
(I am currently using one that is a few years old which is both upgraded and then clean installed 10 on, and that of course does have a pure windows 10 install now)....

Thanks

Answer:Question about Windows 10 Reset Feature

Pretty sure that Resetting is pretty much the same thing as doing a factory restore. So, yes all the bloatware will still be there. I would think you can just make a Windows 10 disc and do a clean install yourself. Microsoft should still activate it.

I was resetting my laptop and after it finished the choose an option screen came up and froze, it won't let me do anything, the keys won't work either.

Answer:Help my Asus laptop froze up after doing a complete reset, it will not let me do anything, i cant even turn it off.

Resetting as in doing a factory reset? Why did you have to do that? Was it having issues prior to you doing this? Holding in the power button does not power it down?

Hi,

My son set our HP stream laptop up with his email and made himself admin and me as an additional user.He has now forgotten his password etc and as an ad user I can't ad windows etc. I've tried to reset the computer completely but again I need his email and password and he can't remember either. Can anyone help? I can't do anything on laptop.

Answer:Complete reset of HP stream laptop without original email ad

We don't provide help here with a password-protected computer because we have no way to confirm its real owner or the reason for wanting to access it.

The only advice I can give is to reset that HP laptop back to its original new condition and set it up again.

I need to remake the auto complete cache on a computer, and I'm using the method of sending a blank email to all of my contacts while disconnected from the internet. I tried this and it's worked with a list of a few contacts (about 5), but I'm wondering if Outlook might crash when I attempt this with the full sized contact list, which is about 100 or so total entries.

Could anybody shed some light on this issue? I'd just like to avoid any problems with this theory before I implement it on a larger scale.

I recently had a hard disk failure while a highly paid consultant, Geek, was trouble shooting my PC. He then sold me a new hard disk. I recovered my backup and used the PC for a week. This morning when I started up my PC the disk was blank, my apps that I installed were gone . Even Microsoft edge asked to be re-setup.
I suspect the 'Geek' remoted in to my computer and reinitialized it as I certainly did not do that.
Please advise how this could have happened other than someone resetting all.

For dsl I know you can go like phone line to external modem> modem to router> then plug as many computers into the router as you have ports for and all can have internet.
However
I was just wondering, you can do the same with a switch, right?
AND
can you just go with dsl phone line to external modem> to a hub> then plug computers in and have them all on the internet? they probably couldn't get ip addresses that way, right?

you would have to go modem to router to hub

but can you go modem to switch or does it have to be a router?

I am not building a network I am just curious

I have two computers set up with Windows XP SP2. One has been set up for a couple years now, but has all the latest updates. The other is a fresh install but both are from the same OS installation cd.

My question concerns what shows up in the Network Connections window. The older installation only shows LAN and high speed internet and my network adapter under that. The newer installation has that, plus an "Internet Gateway" section at the top which appears to have something to do with upnp or something.

I am using a WRT54G, BTW.

Anyone know why the internet gateway is showing up on the new one or why it isn't on the old one?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Answer:Quick Question about Windows Networking

Universal Plug 'n Play service....if you have UPnP enabled on UPnP compliant network devices, the autodiscovery service will find it. On the older machine, you might have it disabled as a service, or might be running some 3rd party firewall that's not allowing it to run out on the LAN.

I was wondering if anyone knew why even though I have specified full permission on both drives and both PC's are administrators, that I am still unable to access folders such as "Program files" "Windows" or even the user folders in Documents and settings?

I've also tried disabling simple file sharing and specifying full permissions that way too with no luck. Thanks for any help!

I was using my Windows Vista Home Premium laptop as a host in a CCNA lab yesterday and an interesting thing happened, it refused to reply to remote network ping requests. I'm going to refer to the laptop as PC3, and my desktop as PC2. PC3 is connected to a cisco switch which is in turn connected to Router 3 which I will refer to as R3. R3 was also directly connected to Router 2, or R2, via serial interface 0/0 with a clock rate set on the R3 side. R2 was connected via Fa0/0 to Switch 2 which PC2 was plugged into. Of course each one of these were seperate networks and I had a static route configured from R2 with R3 as the next hop address, and R3 had a static route with R2 as the next hop address. R3 could ping PC2 via the static route to R2, and PC3 (the vista box, which is on the same network) could ping PC2 successfully as well. R2 can ping PC2, on the same network, and R3 which is directly connected, and could also ping R3's ethernet address via the static route successfully. When R2 went to ping PC3 which is connected to R3's ethernet address the replies never returned (PC3's default gate way was R3's ethernet address btw, the same with PC2 and R2).

I can dig up my lab manual if you need IP addressing information, but basically I took the XP box (PC2) and moved it to PC3's network, removed PC2 from the network and set PC3's ip, subnet, and gateway to the same as PC3. With the same host network information PC2, the xp box was replying ac... Read more

We have a linksys Wireless Access point on our network. I set it up with a static IP and enabled the MAC address filtering. The Broadcast SSID is currently enabled.

Everything works great and the laptop can connect to the network through wireless.

I want to disable the broadcast SSID for security reasons. I disable it through the linksys admin page and then created a manual wireless connection in XP with the correct SSID. However, it will not connect at all when broadcast SSID is disabled even though I set up a manual connection with the correct SSID.

As soon as I enable the broadcast SSID everything works again.

Any Ideas? Thanks!

Answer:Windows XP wireless networking question

I am no pro but, i have recently put together my own linksys wireless network. I have found the flash drive i purchased invalueable. I found one with a rebate and ended up paying about $20, you can probably find one for less with less storage space. Once you have that you can visit www.Linksys.com from your primary computer (hooked directly to your internet connection) and click on the support tab , go to technical support, click on the picture not the knowledge base link. You will then see easy connect go there and choose routers initial setup. this will run net set save it to your pc and open and run it. Choose to download a copy to pc after setup is complete. Then place this copy on your flash drive and plug it into your laptop and it will set it up for you. This ensures the same data is on both. You can then go back in and check the broadcast setting to make sure it is where you want it. I am not possitive that this will solve your problem but, it did mine when i turned off broadcast. Either way, i think its worth it cause i have had to reset mine several times due to the ISP and it has been so easy. You can also manually change to WPA afterwards.

This one should be easy for you pro's

Why is it that when a windows 98 computer is booted up in the morning at the office it takes a good 5 minutes before it is detected and fully working on the network where as the XP machines are almost instantanious.

Its only a small business 6 pc's on a peer to peer , i think thats what you call a network with no server isnt it?
2 desktops with Windows XP and two desktops with Win 98 and two laptops with XP all using 802.11b wireless network cards
reception desktop has a ADSL BT gateway modem/router type thing which we all use to connect to the internet.

one pc is a little problematic as it sometimes doesnt like the network and wont allow connections in/out but other times its fine weird

I assume 98 is pretty crap for networking , the problem is the win98 machines are 333mhz pentiums with 64MB so i doubt they could handle XP or even 2000

is there anyway to makle them more network friendly using 98 by any chance.

Answer:Windows 98 and networking easy question

Simple windows 98 using NETBEUI protocol which is quiet slow on the network to be reconigsed and in windows 98 NETBIOS runs over NETBEUI .

And NETBEUI is a slow/unstable protocol and it takes time to do a broadcast over the network for other machines to reconigse it.And moreover Win98 is not a network OS

So in WinXP Netbios (computer name) runs over TCP/IP so its much faster not much broadccasting in done over TCP/IP protocol..

Hope this is enough

I installed the anniversary update on a machine that had Virtualbox (current version 5.0.26) installed. Shortly after the install had completed, the machine lost network connection - networking was still running with no errors indicated but couldn't access Internet or other machines on the same network. Rebooted and the same thing happened - access ok for 20-30 seconds and then no access. Ran ipconfig in a cmd window and found that the ip address needed to access the network was now allocated to the Virtualbox host-only network and what should have been the address for the Virtualbox host-only network was now allocated to the ethernet adapter.

As the simplest solution I uninstalled Virtualbox, rebooted, and reinstalled Virtualbox. No further problem after that. So be warned if you are installing the update on a machine with Vbox installed.

Hi there

@NickJP

Perhaps the same solution as with VMWARE might work.

In VMware you can enter Network editor (run as administrator) and then reset all virtual adapters to default --that fixes VMWARE networking problems.

I'd lost Bridged networking Virtual NIC -- reset to defaults restored it all OK. You shouldn't have to restore the VM software.

Perhaps there's a similar option in VBOX -- I don't use VBOX so I can't say but on VMWARE it works fine.

Cheers

Does it just work the same way? when you get the xp setup and it asked if you have a second computer does it give you the option for 2000 pro? is there anything you have to do for the 2000 pro that is different from the xp> its just those two computers, they are laptops and both have wireless cards built in.

I am posting from my laptop because my desktop cannot access the internet; it can only boot into safe mode, not safe mode with networking.

I had a malware infection around Thanksgiving that I successfully resolved with HJT. My browser was being hijacked and some networking applications did not work. That was the extent of the infection.

Two days ago I began to see more evidence of browser hijacking. I used HJT, deleted everything that seemed bad, and rebooted. I never made it back into windows proper. Eventually I made it into safe mode. Thinking i had deleted something worthwhile, I restored everything I deleted. Still no boot.

So I came here. Tried to work through 'read and run me first', but in safe mode I was unable to uninstall Java (I have Java 5). I moved all the downloads reccomended from the laptop to the desktop using a flash drive, but SuperAntiSpyware won't install. It gives me the normal Windows "has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. I did not attempt to install or run any other scanners from the read&run.

Haaaaalp!

Answer:Computer reduced to safe mode without networking... cannot complete READ&RUN

Found that TDSserv.sys Driver or whatever and disabled it. Now I am out of safe mode, but I still get the "has encountered an error and needs to close" when I double-click the SuperantiSpyware.exe.

Ok, so I have a 3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI For Complete PC Management NIC (3C905C-TX) and I recently had the disconnecting reconnecting error. Fixed that by resseting the router. Ok, now a problem that has come back from the past to haunt me has arrived. My dl rate has gone from regular around 300-400kbs to a whopping 50 max. Now I am no newbie to computers and have asked people online about it. No I'm not calling technical support lines or that stuff, also I did fix it on this site once in the advanced portion of the router but I dont have the site anymore. Sux to be me huh?

I am working with the system image backup and restore and it can do this just fine over the network but if I go into the command line things look odd. PC worked great day one of my upgrade; games were running way better and I was happy with 10. However, last night I put the PC to sleep; when I woke up, I noticed PC on so I powered the monitor and the tool bar on the bottom left (cortana, windows button, etc) was not responsive. Upon restart, the PC loops repeatedly in this order: "Preparing Automatic Repair", window pops up and disappears then "Diagnosing your PC", then "Automatic Repair" with the options "Restart" and "Advanced Options". I've launched startup repair which fails, my BIOS does not have a DEP selector (Which fixes the issue for many users) in the CPU settings, system finds no restore points, flashes, etc.

My only options now seem to be a system reset or USB boot; my question is this:

What is the difference between USB boot and system reset? I don't want to lose anything, especially these huge game downloads that would take forever to re acquire on my now much slower internet. Also, are there any other options? Perhaps wait for a new version of Windows 10? Thanks in advance everyone,

Hi Paul and welcome to TenForums.

I believe a system Reset will remove all apps not native to the operating system, files and user accounts, whereas a system Refresh should give you a choice of whether or not to keep your files/documents.

I have just a couple questions regarding Windows 10 on my 1520. I upgraded to the most recent build a couple weeks ago from 8.1. It's been buggy as far as the loading loop start screen, but I've had workarounds for that and it's been usable. But now I'm going to soon do a hard reset to fix that stuff, but my question is about the Windows camera. With the upgrade from 8.1, Windows camera is flat out awful and unusable. Rich capture and capture moment features do not function at all, as well as there appears to be no option for 4k video as there was in Lumia camera 5.0. I currently still have Lumia camera on my device, but I realize I will likely lose it when I do a hard reset, as I'm not able to put it on my SD card. So my question for people with a 1520 using a fresh install of Windows 10, can you confirm that the windows camera has has all of the functionality Lumia camera 5.0? Rich capture? 4k video? Etc.. These are my biggest concerns that are keeping me waiting to do a hard reset. Thanks in advance!

1st question
What is the difference
The people I am going to help do a network first had a reg Linksys router had 4 ports and a WAN port- Now if you were going to put more computers on the internet you would hook the ethernet cable from the modem to the Wan port of the router and then ethernet cables from the ports to computers. (right??)

My question is there router isn't working but they had what is called a mini router it says it is a Linksys switch, is that the same as a router? It has no WAN or Internet port on it just 4 ports + a DMZ port and an uplink port. So I guess the ethernet cable from the modem just goes to a reg port and the computers would go to a reg port, is that right?

Right now they have it hooked up like this cause they also have a 24 port switch.
They have the modem, then they have the eithernet cable from the modem hooked into a reg port on the mini linksys switch. Then, they have another ethernet cable going from another reg port on the linksys switch to a port on the big 24 port switch and then all the computers plugged into the big switch and everything seems like it is working as far as the computers all getting on the internet. So does the hookup for that much sound right??

I know this is probably confusing but I am trying to explain the best I can. Now here is my problem and what I want to do.

They have a couple of older gateway computers that they have upgraded to XP and then they have 3 DELL computers I believe they are all XP Profession... Read more

I am in the process of building about 10 to 12 websites and will be responsible in developing, maintaining & doing all the graphic work on them.

My need is a computer that will have the ability to generate high-end graphics and file transfers to sites.

Also will need to be great at networking with other in-house computers because Iíll need to have a few computers that will work off of the ďmainĒ computer (the one that Iím asking about building).

Please list all components you think Iíll need for the new computer build (including tower case Brand and/or Model)

(It should be interesting to see what various techs think should be in a graphic heavy home built computer should have in it!!)

Hello,
Recently I have encountered a problem in which all my internet browsers are suddenly rendered useless at seemingly random intervals (every few days to every few weeks). My network connection remains intact, as, apparently, does my internet connection. However, my browsers (Firefox, Chrome, IE) give "page cannot be displayed" or "failed to establish network connection" errors when I attempt to access any HTTP/HTTPS site (including my router admin page which, of course, does not even require an internet connection to access) - and I continue to get these errors until I reboot my laptop.
I've yet to find the cause of this problem (nor has anyone else I've talked to), so I've just learned to live with it for now, knowing I can always fix it (albeit temporarily...and annoyingly) with a reboot. However, I would much prefer a quicker fix if possible - something I could do from Windows in a few seconds, rather than waiting for a full restart of my computer. Below is a list of what I've tried so far without success:
restarting all my browsers
refreshing the network connection
rebooting the modem
rebooting the router
resetting the network adapter
flushing the DNS cache
stopping/restarting WinHTTP
stopping/restarting Windows Explorer
release/renewing "ipconfig"
release/renewing "nbtstat"
Still, only a full laptop reboot will get my browsers working again. My question, then, is WHY? What other network/internet/browser-type things normally get reset when your computer gets restarte... Read more

Answer:Home Networking Reset Password

If its asking for a user name and password, just enter a valid user name and password for a user account on the PC you're trying to access. If its a Homegroup password you need to figure out what that is or change it. If you click the HomeGroup icon in control panel you should see a "View or print homegroup password option. Do it on the laptop and then enter it on the other PC when prompted.

I've yet to find the cause of this problem (nor has anyone else I've talked to), so I've just learned to live with it for now, knowing I can always fix it (albeit temporarily...and annoyingly) with a reboot. However, I would much prefer a quicker fix if possible - something I could do from Windows in a few seconds, rather than waiting for a full restart of my computer. Below is a list of what I've tried so far without success:

restarting all my browsers
refreshing the network connection
rebooting the modem
rebooting the router
resetting the network adapter
flushing the DNS cache
stopping/restarting WinHTTP
stopping/restarting Windows Explorer
release/renewing "ipconfig"
release/renewing "nbtstat"

Still, only a full laptop reboot will get my browsers working again. My question, then, is WHY? What other network/internet/browser-type things normall... Read more

My T530 was new in September, 2012, with a 9-cell, 94 Wh, 7740 mAh battery (Sanyo FRU 45N1007).  Power Manager (v6.32) shows a cycle count of 167, design capacity 93.24 Wh and full-charge capacity of 83.43. I've previously been pleased with the 5-6 hour battery life, but recently it's been getting shorter and shorter.  Initially the computer would hibernate and shut down at around 15% remaining, then around 30%, then around 40%.  I have battery maintenance set to start charging at 50% and stop at 90%, but every 2-3 months I change it for a cycle or two to charge to 100%.  Power Manager is set to notify me when battery gauge reset is recommended, but it has never done so. While typing this post it hibernated and shut down with a little over 50% remaining (4 hours.)  When plugged in and restarted, it showed 6%. It seems to me that the battery gauge is not correctly reading the remaining charge/capacity/time, and that a gauge reset should remedy that, but there are many horror stories on this forum about detrimental effects from battery reset. So, should I take my chances and perform a battery reset? Is there anything I should otherwise do differently with the goal of long battery life with reasonable runtimes?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:To reset (battery) or not to reset? That is the question.

At this point it sounds like a gauge reset is necessary. Generally, detrimental effects are from the battery reset making issues explicitly apparent rather than hiding behind a false full charge amount.I would recommend not using power intensive applications while the reset is on the discharging portion, though.

Sorry I know this is a complete noobish question.

If I want to convert AVI video files to a format I can burn to DVD and be readable by most modern DVD players. Then which format should I be converting to? I've been poking around and reading about MKV, MP4, H.264 etc, but that shit is mostly greek to me.

I know MP4 is an apple format so I'm guessing I don't want that for DVD players.

Any help would be appreciated. Also could anyone recommend a free software that's noob friendly to convert the files? I tried with the nero essentials program I have that came with my DVD drive, but that couldn't do it.

I want to enter a contest and I noticed that in the rules it says :
"Mechanically reproduced or automated deposited entries, or those generated by script or bot are not eligible." Does anyone know if this means if you simply click on the name/address/city/state etc fields when completeing the entry form, and the info is automatically filled in that that falls into the 'automatically deposited or generated by script or bot' criteria?

Answer:Question regarding Auto Complete

I wouldn't think so but it seems like a contest could make the rules as they see fit. It would be best to ask them.

I inadvertently saved a wrong password into IE and instead of prompting me when I put the correct password in, it's not. So every day, I start to type in my user name and it auto completes and puts in the incorrect password, and I type in the correct one. I don't know if it's Vista or IE 7 but in IE 6, if I made a mistake, it would ask me next time around because it was a different password. I know I can "clear" the settings in tools but I don't really want to do that since I've already saved some other passwords. I've only had this Vista system for three days. So is this a glitch in IE 7, maybe?

Answer:Question about auto complete in IE7

Hi,I've done that myself before too, and this is what I did to fix it...there may be a more technical way, but this fixed it for me.in the box where you type your user name - click inside the box and a 'subbox' for want of a better description shows up with your user name in it - mouse over that user name till it is highlighted then press your delete button on your keyboard while the name is highlighteda box will pop up that says "Windows has a password that's stored for this username. Do you want to delete the username and password"say yes. Then type in the correct user name and password and your correct one will then be saved.Hope this helpsCB

Maybe I'm retarded, but how do I figure out which program is controlling my wireless network adaptor? My computer disabled it, and I am unable to re-enable it. I have an HP Pavilion dv7. It has the touch button on the top bar to enable or disable the wireless adaptor but pushing it does nothing. I've tried going under Windows Mobility Center to turn wireless on, but that button is grayed out and disabled. When I go under control panel and click on HP wireless assistant, I get nothing-no loading icon, or anything. This has happened to me a couple times in the past when my battery got extremely low and I had the box checked to let my computer shut my wireless adaptor off to conserve energy, but what I did to fix it is beyond me. I've cured the battery problem, but this time it did it out of the blue, and I can't figure it out. Any help would be great, thanks.

Is there any way I can "transfer" Microsoft Works from my Laptop, to my desktop? Both systems are running Vista.

Can it just be written to a disk? Or am I correct in assuming Microsoft has DRM or whatever that would prevent that?

Answer:Complete newb question.

I'm sure there's a ton of system files floating around in different directories that you can't just copy over the MS Works folder. You'll probably need the install disc. You can also download OpenOffice.org instead. It's free, has more features than Works and is pretty close to Office. The interface isn't as clean, but it shouldn't be hard to pick up.

Hi everyone,

Bought myself a new laptop last week with Windows 7 (64 bit) pre-installed. As I've jumped from Windows XP to 7, missing out Vista I'm still finding my way around, so I have a question which is probably so stupid, I apologise in advance!

Windows 7 was pre-installed. I have 2 HDDs showing "OS(C)" 58gb and "local disk (D)" 397gb. Having searched for the answer to my question I believe that Windows has been installed to a partition? My question/problem is that all the programs already installed are on C: and any new programs I want to add are also defaulting to install there, therefore my bigger HDD is completely blank expect one file "msdia80.dll". Is this going to cause me problems? Should I move things to D: while I haven't got much installed? How do I default installation to the D drive?

On my old PC with XP I just had 1 HDD where everything lived, I never bothered with partitions.

Answer:Complete newbie question

Some people believe in partitioning. I believe it's a waste of time in many cases though. What you can do in Windows 7 (assuming there isn't anything important on Drive D, go to Computer Management (Go to Start --> Right-Click on Computer, Click on Manage). After that, click on Disk Management, then look for where partition D:, assuming it's all on one drive, right-click on the D: partition, and hit "Delete Volume". Then to use that dead space, you can right click on the C: partition and hit "Extend Volume" and extend it to the maximum space and you should have full use of everything on the C: drive.

I had to do a complete re-install 2 days ago. I am waiting for a driver and program disk to come to my house to re-install those since I can't get them to re-install in DOS. I've added MY programs(Mozilla, Incredimail, Weatherbug, Picturetrail Photo Editor, iTunes, I can't remember what else)to the computer but I'm wondering if I will have to re-do everything when I get that driver and program disk.

Do you know?

Answer:Complete Re-Install question

Nothing should be done in DOS. There is no DOS in Vista and I can't imagine what you tried to do.

Installing drivers does not affect any installed programs.

Ok, I do a complete PC backup to DVDs. Then my hard drive crashes. Time to restore the PC from the DVDs.

I read something here that said you need to put in the OS disk & boot on that to restore the PC from the backup DVDs. I don't have Microsoft OS disks. The Dell came with its own restore to "out of the box" disks. Can you just make a boot disk & use that? If so where do you go after bootup?

I'm fine with the backup procedure. I'm just not sure about the restore steps.
This is one of those things that you don't try out until something bad really happens. I just want to make sure I'm prepare if it happens.

Thanks for helping.

Answer:complete newbie question

Bear in mind everybody has there own preference and depends on how much money you want to spend.

I personally choose the wireless G options, since it gives me more speed. You can use wireless B if you don't have the money to spend. Here are some model numbers for you too look at... I prefer linksys, but D-Link and Netgear are pretty good also.

I know practically nothing about javascript or html, save what I've learned on the net and from some library books so please be patient with me.

I'm trying to put together a very simple form that will calculate the price of an order of tickets for a local community theater group. Someone suggested javascript since it will manipulate data without using ActiveX.

So, I have made a very basic form which allows one to select a performance date and the number of tickets, and then calculates the price of the tickets.

I have a couple of questions.

First, we have 3 different ticket prices: adult, senior and student. So, right off the bat I have 3 calcultions to make. It's the same procedure each time and the way I have set it up right now, I have a bunch of different function calls for each calculation. This is how it goes for one type of ticket, A standing for adult:

function calcA(){
document.PPFTixOrd.TixAOrd$.value =document.PPFTixOrd.TixANum.value* document.PPFTixOrd.TixA$.value;
}
function FindA(){
doFindA=setInterval("calcA()",1);
}
function xcalcA(){
clearInterval(doFindA);
}

<input type=text name="ALabel" value="Adult" align=left>
<input type=text name="TixANum" align=right size="6" value="" onFocus="FindA();" onBlur="xcalcA();">

I have a computer that doesnt have alot of space nor alot of memory so I decided to do a complete system restore back to factory settings. My hard drive showed at the time of the restore 71.48gb as its original size, with 44.87gb free space and 62% free space. After the system restore, I had the exact same of free space remaining. I turned this computer into my gaming computer so it has pratically nothing on it. So why is the free space the same now as it was before I did the restore. I added up the amount of space all programs I have installed as 837.22mb. I was expecting an increase in speed with so few programs but it didnt happen. I have Windows XP Sp 3.
Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.
I have another computer with everything else on it. it has a whole lot of programs on it and it shows my free space as 76% and its only a 40gb hd..

Hi Guys and Gals,

I apologize if this has been asked a thousand times before. I just recently had to replace my PC due to some severe motherboard and power issues. I have the old hard drive which is in fine shape. I want to transfer my information from Microsoft Outlook 2000 to my new PC which is running Outlook 2003. Any suggestions on how I can do this? Thanks in advance.

I don't know if this has been asked already and sorry if it has.

Is there a way to save both Vista and Win7 complete system image on the same partition? If possible rename the folders at least (I tried this but didn't work)?

I have a limited space in my hard drive and allocated only one partition for system backups. I'm quite happy with Win7 and I would like to have both Vista and Win7 backups just in case. I'm also trying to avoid multiple DVDs as backup media as much as possible so that restoring the image would be easier for my kid when i'm not around.

I'd appreciate your inputs. Thanks!

Answer:Question on Complete PC Backup Image Folder

I have tried this also. The best way I found is to go to Wal-Mart and get a 250GB external HD for $60 and just use it. It backs up about 100 GB of USED space on the Vista partition and 30 GB USED space on Win 7 partition (130 total USED space) and compresses it into about 59 GB on the external HD. Works well. Took about 45 min. I have done it twice now with two builds. Good luck finding your solution.

Edit: this new build just finished. It looks like it compressed it into 37 GB instead of 59 GB. That's an improvement if I am not missing anything,. It just now finished! That's a good thing. Maybe they have better compression in build 7077.

Hello.
I am unable to await assistance with my Rootkit infection any longer as it has rendered me computerless. As a result, I have decided to wipe the hard drive and reinstall Vista altogether in hopes of fixing the problem.

I have Vista Home Ultimate and have a few questions regarding data backup, specifically Vista Complete PC Backup, before I do so.

1. Does Vista Complete PC Backup copy any files/registry errors that may be causing my problem currently? IOW, is there a potential risk that this backup may copy the problem along with it?

2. Will Vista Complete PC Backup actually copy programs, program files, etc. such as my music, my saved images, my projects, etc.? Or does it just copy generic settings and Windows parameters?

Finally, is there a better option for me to wipe/reinstall a clean version of Vista with the intention of wiping a Rootkit virus w/o having to backup and copy all my other peripheral programs and their respective files, images, projects, etc.? (I am quite sure none of these peripheral files are the infected culprit)

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Infected. Question about Vista Complete PC Backup

Hello; please note I am not a staff member here, but perhaps I can help out.Reformatting is probably a wise decision, what with the carnage being wreaked in AII and HJT by these new rootkit variants. There's a guide to safely backing up your files here (by Blade):http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...t&p=1405010He suggests doing a thorough reformat, completely wiping the drive, because rootkits can and do hide in registry entries and System Restore points as well as executables and installers. If you save files to an external drive, run Flash-Disinfector as he suggests, and be careful which files you back up. I'd suggest asking about Vista Complete PC Backup in the Vista forum, where you may get a quicker response:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/72/windows-vista/Good luck - Straythe

Does anyone know anything about the program "Complete Delete" ? It says and I have heard that emptying the recycle bin doesn't get rid of everything. Does this actually get rid of the files etc. so no one can dig them out of the hard drive if you sell your computer or give it away.

I don't have anything of interest on my personal computer but at work it would be an advantage if it really worked.

Does anyone who repairs computers have an idea about this program?

I would appreciate your help. It's on a really good special but that may be because it is no good.
