External 1TB harddrive(Iomega - seagate inside) RAW drive

Question: External 1TB harddrive(Iomega - seagate inside) RAW drive

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Disk Management: shows the drive is RAW but a healthy Partition.

I opened the hard drive casing, tried connecting the drive directly to the internal sata cable but the same didn't read even then and still shows as RAW drive. I got a Storite USB to SATA adapter and tried that, the drive is now running fine(as it sounds) with intermittent kind of noise (clicking etc.,) for sometime and then disappears. After directly connecting the drive atleast the below softwares are able to read the data in the drive but unable to recover it.

I have tried recovering data using the below softwares.

1. EaseUS DAta recovery - took too much time to complete reading - 17% in more than 24 hours- stopped it.
2. M3 DAta recovery - tried fixing the boot sector but failed finally.
3. Stellar Windows data recovery - keeps on reading.
4. Remo Recover - this atleast was able to give me a folder list and complete view of the files inside the drive but then I wasn't able to recover any files as they weren't opening or recovered from the drive.
5. Icare data recovery - took too much of time reading it but couldn't recover anything.
5. Test Disk - trying Now - last hope now.

My Questions:

In Test Disk 7.0
1. The 1tb drive is a single partition. but Test disk identifies 4 of them as below,
" * "
" P "
" P "
" P "

I understand the " P " stands for Primary and " * " stands for boot sector.
How do I fix this boot sector for NTFS boot sector ? what is the right way to do it ? I dont want to do some irrepairable damage to the disk.

2. What are the chances of data recovery in this situation?
3. Should I try anything else as well?

Note: It was my backup drive, so I badly need to recover the IMPORTANT data as much as possible.

Any help in guiding me is greatly appreciated. PLEASE HELP !!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: External 1TB harddrive(Iomega - seagate inside) RAW drive

My recommendation is to use [email protected] Recovery Pro. I had a similar situation (raw indication) on a drive a few months back and I tried several of the leading data recovery apps, and the one I recommended is the one that found the most stuff -- nearly everything. It took nearly a whole day to do an in-depth scan, but in the end, it was worth it. It's free to install and try out, but you need to buy a license to do any serious recovery work.

I had to restart my computer after installing something, upon logging back in the light on the back of my external stopped working and it stopped recognizing. But I can still hear it spinning. Can I fix this? If not how do I recover my files?

Answer:IOMEGA External Harddrive stopped recognizing after system restart.

Hello Carbomb and welcome to Seven Forums.

Please post a screenshot of your expanded Disk Managment. It may give a clue as to why your external Iomega is no longer being recognized. Perhaps it no longer has a drive letter associated with it, or something else.

Could a USB port be damaged when trying to attach the cable from a 1.5 T external harddrive. this harddrive was attached before I got this computer a few days ago.

Can't see why it would be?Which having said... if the drive demands more power than the pc - particularly a laptop - can deliver then possibly; but have never come across it.If the drive requires serious power i/p then use an external usb-power adapter to power it?Have you experienced this and this is why you're posting here now?

I have a problem with my Seagate external harddrive. It won't let my computer start. It stops at the BIOS screen and does nothing. I tried pressing the BIOS setup or System recovery but it doesn't work. I found out that my external harddrive was the problem after serveral tries. I took the plug out of my computer and restarted it. It worked fine. I plugged it back in again to the computer and it was detected in Device Manager but not detected on Windows. In Device Manager it said there was no problem at all. However when I clicked computer the external harddrive didn't show up. I also have to mention that I dropped my harddrive accidentally. It keeps making a beeping noise every other second. It was a regular beep, nothing out of the ordinary. I also tried diagnosticing my drive. However that was a problem too. It made another error. I also tried to plug the external harddrive to another computer and it also made the beeping noise and it didn't show up on the otehr computer. I'm starting to think that this is an external error with the parts inside than internal with software and other stuff. I don't think that I like recovering my data with experts because it costs a lot of cash. The ohter option is to replace my drive with another one from seagate. The warranty is still on and won't expire in a while. Oh yeah and I just recently discovered that on the other computer I tested the drive on it starts up when I plug it in before I start the computer.

Hi, and thanks in advance to any help. Today I noticed that my Seagate 250gb harddrive is not showing up under my computer as a disk. This happened after a reboot. It is the only usb device plugged into my computer and my taskbar recognizes it with the safely remove hardware icon. Under. It also shows up in disk management as unallocated with no partition. It has been fussy before but has worked fine for awhile now. Is there anything I can do or have I lost all of my data? Also it was pretty full with just 5% freespace on it before this happened. I know I probably should have backed up this data but now I am nervous because I have important stuff on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My external hard drive isn't being recognised by the laptop. It is just making beeping noises. Is there anything I can do to get it to work, and if not, who should I send it off to, and how much can I expect it to cost?

Answer:seagate external harddrive doesnt spin up

Could be any of several causes:
Harddrive dead
not enough power (try with laptop plugged into mains - not on battery power)
faulty cable
faulty usb port
Is it making the same noise as in this youtube vid?

So I have a seagate External drive which had been working perfectly fine for me right upto yesterday.
My kids were watching a film via the drive connected to my ps4 and all worked well but when I went to connect it to my netbook to manage some files it was no longer visible.
I've done extensive google searches but not come across anything that would seem to fix my problem.
The drive is visible in drive management but not in disk management. I have tried or in all the uso ports but that makes no difference.
The drive now no longer shows up when I plug it into the ps4 which leafs me to suspect that it's had it and I've lost whatever was on it.
One other thing to note is that when I connect it to my netbook it makes a noise like the drive inside is spinning to try and come to life.
Having said this however it had just decided to show up on my netbook so I am copying the files off of it right now to make sure they're not lost. I'm going to say however that this is going to need replacing right?

Problem
- My 500GB Seagate external harddrive can't be recognized in the computer (as if it wasn't there) when plugged via USB
- It makes a repeated beep when connected to a plug
- I called technical support and they charge $300 for data recovery

Question
- If my external harddrive has failed, then what are some methods would Seagate use to recover the data?
- Can't I just open the casing and remove the SATA drive and plug it in with my SATA adapter (i know it voids warranty, but I'd rather have my data back at a cheaper price than to get a replacement harddrive)
- Isn't it possible that the casing might've broke, not the hard drive itself?
- What are your thoughts on this one?

It sounds like your drive has failed. Anytime a drive makes noise such as those, it means the read/write head is bouncing across the data platters.

You may wish to look into Data Recovery or to return the drive to us for an exchange

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

What does that mean?

Answer:Seagate External harddrive failed, back for $300?

There is the possibility that it could be the encloser that has died.
The only way find out is to purchase another enclosure. However you will void any change at warranty if you pop open seagate's enclosure.

As the title says, my new Seagate Expansion Portable Drive is not working in the 3.0 slots in the front of my computer. It only works when i plug it into one of my two 2.0 slots on the back of my computer, which are both occupied by my mouse and keyboard, both of them are not backwards compatible. When my Drive is plugged into a 3.0, absolutely nothing happens. i get a green light on the drive, but it does not show up in my bios or in "My Computer". Works perfectly fine in a 2.0 though.

My motherboard is made by gigabyte, and is only about 2 months old, and my drive is 5 months old.

Answer:External seagate 1tb harddrive not working with 3.0 usb slot.

Did you install the 3.0 drivers and enable it in the BIOS? All versions of USB are backwards compatible.

Anyone use the Seagate Replica software that comes with the 2T External Hardrive? This is the GoFlex Desk series of external harddrives.

The software does an automatic backup of all your computers harddrives and logical drives and backs up any changes periodically to the external hardrive. It is suppose to allow full recovery (it includes a boot disk, linux based for restoring from the backed up 'image').

Anyone use it, and does it successfully restore the 'image' in case of a full crash?

Why bother using third-party disk-imaging (especially from Seagate) when Windows 7 has it built-in?
The built-in one works well, I've used it.

I have taken delivery of a Seagate FreeAgent pro 750.I have created a backup plan and put my pictures in to it.Every time I modify a file (JPG/.doc & .psd are the ones I have tried so far) it refuses to back it up and the log shows error 8. In fact I just downloaded some jpegs from my camera and they havbe been rejected as well.I cannot find the solution and there are limited help files. Can anyone help please?

Answer:Seagate external harddrive rejects amended files.

Autobackup.Maybe someone has used or is using this.I need to sort this out because the drive is useless to me if I cannot add extra files to the plan.It is meant to monitor changes and automatically write them to the drive.I think I might be missing something obvious but the manual/help is not very helpful. Please somebody point me in the right direction.

I have Windows 7 Home premium 64bit as I recently got a new computer, and to my surprise my seagate external Harddisk did not work. If I go to the Devices section, it is listed as Desktop. I have tried many things such as, rebooting, trying different USB, Assigning A letter to the Expansion and a few others as you will see in my screenshots. Just before I forget my old PC 32bit Windows 7 Ultimate, automatically detected my 500gb Seagate 500gb External Harddisk so I cannot see a problem with the Harddrive or with my computer as it is brand new and fully functioning. Below are my screenshots.

As you can see from these images non of the fixes on the fourm, or on seagate work. If you have any fix please reply to this post as soon as you can, or on the other hand any questions. I will be very grateful.

Sorry about the thumbnail, Not sure what happened there.

SATA or PATA????

Have you tried to remove it from the ext case and installed it into the computer...to check if any of the electronics in the external case failed.
could be something with the usb drivers in the new machine... might try unstalling from the device manager the usb controllers, maybe the composite device then turn the machine off and let windows reinstall 'em again and see if the drive is picked up.
At this point I'd be asking just how important is the data on this HD... I'd even go so far as see if I could put the HD into a friends machine,(or old 'puter), to see if it could be picked up???? Be sure and copy the data off the HD while you continue to trouble shoot the drive.
From experience..... the only drive I've not been able to finally detect ended up as a dead drive, "bfh"

I have just purchased the Lenovo IdeaCentre 510 Tower PC [i7]. It came with Windows 10 Home OS. Within the set up, it asked me whether I wanted to install updates to Windows 10 - i said 'yes'. It took a good couple of hours to complete the whole set up of the desktop, but according to the log, all Windows updates appear to have been successfully installed. (I mention this because I later found something on Lenovo's website about updating to Windows 10 when setting up your Lenovo for the first time - it mentioned trouble which may include the damaging or disabling of hardware? I can't seem to find this again, or else i would post a link. I think this may have been referring to upgrades to earlier windows versions rather than upgrades for Windows 10 applied to a machine which is sold with Windows 10 already installed.) My desktop seems to be up and running but I have just attempted to connect my Seagate Backup Plus portable drive using the USB port and it will not recognise it (I tried this on several ports).  I can feel the Seagate working but it does not show up under My Computer or anywhere else I can see.  I have tested the USB port by inserting a regular USB pen drive and it DOES recognise this. The Seagate previously worked on my Windows Surface Pro 3 with no trouble and I have all of my files backed up on it.  Hope somebody can help me figure out what is going wrong...  Many thanks!

Just the other day my External zip drive stopped ejecting the disks. I press the eject button and it makes the ejecting noises and what not butthe disk moves a millimeter or so and thats it. Any ideas?

Answer:Iomega external ZIP Drive not Ejecting.

Try doing a software eject.

Right click on the drive letter. If not on your desktop, find it under "My Computer"

Click on "Eject Disk"

Also as a final backup most ZIP's have an emergency eject fallback method. On mine it is a pinhole in the back just above the power connector.

Must be fully powered down, removed and you stick a straightened paper clip into that hole and push.

See your instruction manual if such a procedure exists for your drive.

Finally you can gently push the disk in a bit more with your finger from the front loading slot and exercise it. It may be hung up on its ejection path. Jiggle may unseat and clear the path.

Best of luck

Remember me - Old Borris, the elderly gent who was concerned that two Predators, in succession, proved dodgy and while Iomega replaced the first which was near the end of its warranty period, they refused to replace the second saying, in effect, "the second Predator we sent you to replace the first dodgy one is only warranted for the few weeks left on the warranty of the original dodgy Pred. and if it proves to be dodgy too, well, tough titties, we ain't going to replace that: you'll just have to buy a new one". That seems to me to be both illogical and grossly unfair and I intend to take it up with the Fair Trading people but, in the meantime,I am not happy about shelling out for a third Pred with that sort of record. Reporting this on this site a week or so ago some very helpful chaps suggested that I could fit an internal drive for about £20. But apparently I can't 'cos my Densitron 'Cassius' [not a laptop] is too thin [just like an after-dinner mint but not so tasty]to swallow owt. Not that I tried to feed it any owts. So it has to be another external drive. Can anyone recommend a good reliable external c.d. rewriteable drive on which I can depend for the next 2 or 3 years [I don't expect to be around muh longer than that]? And, incidentally, has anyone had the same bad Iomega experiences as have I?

I have something going on with an Iomega MDHD320-T external hdd that has had me like this for hours. :cry

If I have the drive powered on, and not the computer, outside of the initial "spin up" sound, there is no clicking or anything that sounds amiss.

I've got an old alienware desktop, and once I try to power it up, if the Iomega is connected, it will sometimes not go past the first screen that I get before I have the ability to go into the bios. Sometimes it will logon to Windows (still using XP Pro)

If it is one of the rare instances that I can get into Windows with the Iomega running, the drive does not show in My Computer, Device Manager, or anything else that I can think of. While this is going on, the external is doing something weird...it spins and clicks over and over. It almost sounds as if it is trying to boot from the external. If I am watching in Device Manager, it refreshes over and over in time to what the external is doing. If I am watching My Computer, for a split second, right when I power the external down, the drive appears.

I went into the bios, and made sure that the boot sequence was first the CD player, then the internal drive. Everything else is disabled.

The external is not plugged in through a hub; it is directly into the back of the computer. The power source is directly into an outlet.

I have a Hiren's CD, and using it to boot, I was able one time to see the drive using TestDisk 6.11.3. When I told ... Read more

Answer:Iomega External Drive Issue

I take it the alienware PC and the Dell xps boot normally when they aren't attached to the IOmega obviously...

Clicking sounds are very bad from a hard drive...

Is this the first time you've use the IOmega in a while?

Is there an operating system partition on the IOmega? If there is one, you could try booting to it and use Hiren's to see if you can move your data. I guess you would have thought of that.

If you can't get at your data, sounds like it might be worth a visit to the local tech to see if he can do anything you haven't tried. Maybe he can scavenge your data...

Are you hooked up to ports on the front of the machine ? ?
On quite a few machines these are under-powered...try another USB port.
That or purchase a powered USB hub for your machine. DVD's require more power than other USB devices.

Maybe it's something to do with USB 1.1 - that drive isn't operating at full speed. It's needs USB2 by the sound of the specifications.

Hello,

I am trying to run an iomega Select Desktop Hard Drive, 1 TB. You can see it here (http://reviews.cnet.com/external-ha...-34147148.html?tag=contentMain;contentBody;2r)

I cannot find any drivers or any info really for this device online.

I am running Windows 7 on a intel core i5 processor. I used to have no problem running it on this computer. It now will not show up in Disk Management or Device Manager. The blue light on the device is on and I have even tried a different power supply as well as a different port, and unplugging/restarting the computer.

The only other thing I can think of is the USB cord may be bad, but I don't have anything to try out. I am hoping that it is not completely dead - lots of files on this device.

Please let me know if you need any more info or if there is anything else I can try! I'm desperate! Thanks in advance

Answer:iomega External Hard Drive won't recognize

Does it work on another machine?

Has it been bumped or knocked or dropped?

Youu should have all your files backed up especially those on portable drives because they are the most likely to fail and lose all their files. All hard drives will fail.

If it doesn't appear in Device Manager, then the drive or its enclosure may be faulty (if not the cable). If it is under warranty, you should replace it. If not, you may need to remove the drive from its case and try connecting it to a machine through a USB adapter or connected internally to a desktop PC to see if it works without the enclosure.

The hard drive in your computer is in one of two states right now. It's
either going to fail or it already failed. Hard drives are inherently
fragile things with no built in redundancy.

I have a new 320GB Iomega portable/external USB2 hard drive, purchased some time ago as a spare, but - until now - not used. So it has no data on it other than whatever might have been on it from the factory.
The fundamental problem is that when plugged in, it does not show up as a drive in the "My Computer" screen. I have plugged it in to different USB ports, and in two separate laptops, one WinXP (yes yes, I know....) and one Win7. The power light on the drive illuminates, and the case vibrates/hums very slightly which suggests that the hard drive is spinning. But it simply doesn't appear as a drive. There are some clues (which I hope forum experts may be able to interpret). See details below. First, I tried to see if there was a hardware problem:
1) I checked the connecting USB cable, by using another different and known-good cable. Same problem: drive not visible. Which suggests the original USB cable is OK.
2) To check if there was a fault in the actual Iomega PCB inside the casing, I opened the case, disconnected and removed the hard drive (it's made by Seagate), and installed it in another, spare, hard drive caddy which I happened to have - and which has its own known-good USB PCB interface. Plugged this into my laptop(s). Still no drive visible or listed in "My Computer" - which suggests that the original Iomega PCB USB interface is not the problem.
So.... is the hard drive dead? It seems to spin OK. Or is there a software issue, or something else? Incidentally all my... Read more

Hi all. First time post!Am having a problem with an Iomega eGo external hard drive. I'm running XP on a Samsung netbook. When I connected the eGo, it worked first time, a bit slowly, but i could access the files. There's only about 40GB on there, but they are big video files. The second time i did it - and now every time - it does the following (excuse the lack of technical language): first the computer seems to recognise it (it makes that bimbom sound you get you plug in a USB device), then, after a long time, it scans the files. But then nothing. The light on the eGo is blinking so it's working and moving, but the computer can't seem to recognise it any more. At this point I wait, and wait and wait. The light on the eGo is still on, sometimes it flickers. But nothing else happens. If I go to MyComputer, the whole thing is slow. Eventually, if I leave it, it recognises the hard drive and F: will come up. When I click on this to see the contents, a long, long pause and freeze occurs and when it thaws the computer says the hard drive is not formatted and do I want to format it.I tried using the Dos prompt and pressing F: and - after a long pause, during which the eGo light flickrs - I got: "The volume does not contain a recognised file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted."I've tried it on two other laptops, both running XP. Same results.So. What does it sound like to you... Read more

I have had this iomega 500gb external hardrive for about 11 months and it has been working fine, until two days before it was fell down from 1 feet. After that my computer cant find the hard drive now. There is a blue light indicating that the hard drive has power running to it (it has a separate power source to the computer) but there is no blinking light which usually comes on when the computer is reading it. I have made sure all the cables are in properly but the hard drive can't be found in either my computer or device manager. I tried the hard drive on another computer but same problem.
How to recover the data and make the drive in operating condition.?
I'm using windows XP SP3 ([email protected])

Answer:iomega external Hard drive is not recognizing

There are various softwares which can recover data, but the prerequisite for all of them is that the PC is able to detect the drive. That being the case, all I can suggest is to send it to a data recovery service, but that is mega expensive.

Important & irreplaceable data should never be stored on only one hard drive. I have four external drives, each one storing the same data.

hello fellow geeks

hey
i have a compaq pc running microsoft ME with a pentium III processor

i have an external USB ZIP 250MB drive, which is problematic.

i even changed the ZIP drive itself as i thought it was fautly - but the problem persists.

When i try to open the zip drive folder, or add files to the zip drive the zip drive springs into action, but after that nothing happens - and the PC becomes unreponsive. The mouse cursor is still moveable, but i cannot open any files, menus, folders etc. Then when i eject the zip disc the PC once more becomes responsive??

i have a brother USB printer too - maybe its conflicting with that? The thing is the zip drive has been working fine for around a year now - its all happened out of the blue.

I am now thinking that its an IRQ conflict? Maybe i am wrong - ive added some pictures of my device manager list and IRQ list to see if anyone can spot anything that looks incorrect:

regarding the little green question marks next to USB composite device and USB mass storage device on the pictures - i clicked on these and it said that the hardware is wokring, but some components of the hardware may not work correctly due to out of date drivers. So i updated with the latest drivers from IMOEGA but the question marks still remain there.

any help will be great.

PS i uninstalled the zip drive and the brother USB printer - and installed from scracth again - but the ZIP drive stiil refuses to work

And no, I don't believe the USB Mass Storage Device is the external hard drive, as it remains there after I unplug the device.

I'll provide whatever else information is necessary. I'm not a computer savvy guy, let alone know anything about PCs.

Hi all,

I am new to this but attempting to try to recover some files from my Iomega external hard drive. I was suprised it came up with an error when I plugged it in as i hardly used it, just for backing up.

Now it has alot of files on I would like to attempt to get back. Pictures etc.

The error is cyclic crc check - drive needs formatting.

The drive still spins up ok, i can hear it. The computer can see the drive.

I tried the Recuva software but It cannot access the drive.

I have tried to type CMD chkdsk/r as I saw this may do something online but all i get is insufficient priviledge. I tried altering the user admin account but didnt make a difference.

Is there anything else I can do presonally?

How much does professional recovery cost?

Many thanks
David

Try removing the drive from its enclosure and kook it directly to the computer.

As for the chkdsk, run CMD as Admin first. shouldn't get access denied.

Also I would try booting off of a Linux LiveCD such as Ubuntuand see if you can see the drive that way.

How can I run chkdsk on this external drive? I am willing to buy third-party software if necessary.

P.S. I did manage to create a system image in a different folder of the external drive, but am curious about the one that failed. It contains no data and has never been used.

Hello all, I am at my wits end and i wonder if anyone can help. I have a 500GB external iomega hard drive. I had only used it a handful of times to back up such things as holday snaps and my itunes music and video library. This was basically to free up my laptops memory.
I then plugged into the usb port on my PS3 console and found it was in FAT32 so dragged game saves across to do the same thing for my PS3. I then used it to drag music to my iphone and left it for a week, however now the PS3 wont recognise it and nor will my computer , and i have no idea why not.
There is power to the hard drive via external 12v power source and the blue light on it shows that power goes to it, but when plugged to any other console or laptop it does not show signs of being read.
Any one able to shed light on this and help with an answer?

Answer:IOMEGA external hard drive has just stopped working

Have you tried the drive in another computer?
Do you have any other external drives or USB devices and do they work ok?
What OS are you running?

I would definitely recommend taking the drive to a shop or tech to have a look, if you aren't familiar with data recovery.

The problem could be a corrupt partition table, or other data related - not physical, problem. A reformat will "fix" your drive, but you will lose data. In situations like these, taking the drive to an experienced person will be the best option to avoid making matters "worse", and as a worse case scenario, data recovery software should get your most if not all of your data back.

Most likely, the integrity of the drive has been affected, but the drive itself still holds the data.

Hi,

I have had an Iomega external hard for a year now and it used to work perfectly, until suddenly, my computer (Mac) won't detect it anymore.

When I turn it on, the blue light comes on and I can hear the disk spinning inside, but there is no trace of any external device connected to my mac. I've connected through USB and Firewire with no success. Going to disk utility, only my internal hard drive appears.

It simply just stopped showing up on my computer. Does anybody have any advice to get my hard drive working again?

Answer:Iomega External Hard Drive stopped being detected

Try a different usb & firewire port physically on your mac & try a different cable. If no dice try it on a different mac or even on a PC, see if the other computer detects it. many times w/ external hard drives the enclosure fails but the drive is ok. worse case scenario the enclosure is bad & you can remove drive to put in another enclosure, or the whole thing could be hosed. try this, post back. thanks!

Answer:Why does my Iomega HDD 320GB external hard drive not work on my windows 10?

Could be lots of things. What format is the drive in (FAT32, NTFS, other etc). If you are able to connect to an OS on an older OS, it may well be worth backing them up on that, then format on the Win10 PC then look at copying the files back. Sounds drastic, but that's something I would consider.

I am having some crazy issues with my computer. I had a plethora of BSOD's which led up to my computer crashing completely. I reinstalled windows by deleting the partition and putting it back on fresh and new but had to do it twice since the first time didn't work.

The first time gave me hell after I tried to drag my saved music files for itunes onto my new desktop. This led to the Explorer restart issue which was so bad that I just reinstalled the system again. I have had the system up and running and everything seems OK (lag in speed since I took out two of my 2 GB memory sticks after thinking they might have been the problem-PNY is sending me replacements) but now I am noticing that I am getting the EXPLORER HAS SHUT DOWN error when trying to open my folders on my Iomega drive. I have done a scan disc on this hard drive and it is totally free of errors. No errors have been found. The External drive is only about 7 months old. I have scanned it for viruses with AVG Internet Security 2012 and it has no viruses to my knowledge.

What can I do to save this drive??? I have almost 1.3 gb of important stuff on it!!! Help!!! I am not very computer savvy so this is really mentally exhausting and frustrating. Hi, I currently have a computer running Windows 7 and I would like to transfer the backed up information on the iomega external hard drive to it and also I noticed an option to use Windows ready boost too to help speed up and increase performance. My concern however is that the chassis is quite small and that the computer specs may not enable these operations to complete properly. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Transferring data with iomega external hard drive and using ready boost?

I wouldn't advise enabling ReadyBoost on your Iomega hard drive.  You should only really use external flash memory with ReadyBoost, and that, only if you have a minimal RAM and you are desperate to speed up your computer.  See this to find out more about ReadyBoost.

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

I chatted with a Seagate tech today who told me I needed to go to radio shack and have something done with the AC adapter but I didn?t buy it there. Also Seagate rep told me to try another PC but I don?t have one..

I am concerned that I spent good hard earned money on this drive and its lasting only a year and that I might lose my data..

After Transferring file from Seagate External drive to flash drive 16G. (Verbatim)

I can't remove hardware device on Verbatim Flash drive to remove it.

Even after I close all the files, folders and programs in my computer.
It won't say "safe to remove device".

I have to switch off the computer to remove the flash drive.

Is this normal or what ?

If not what can be the problem ? I can fix ?

Is it safe to remove device even if I can't disable the usb flash drive ?
I closed all the files, fodlers and programs before I remove.

Thanks.

Answer:Transferring file from Seagate External drive to flash drive

The computer may still be saving data to the Flash. Or it is caught in ROM. If your certain the transfer is complete, you can pull the drive. You may want to do a Check Disk on the Flash Drive to make sure it is in good order.

Hi,

When I switched my Laptop on yesterday the nice Seagate Icon for my external backup hard drive had vanished but has been replaced by a dull looking generic Windows page icon ? This external backup drive is the K:\ drive on my system.

I surfed google yesterday trying to find some advice on how to restore what was a very attractive Icon ? . . but have been struggling to find any advice I could understand or thought I'd be able to follow ?

On a positive note, I have located the exact file for the disappeared icon on my laptop (its called SeagatePortable.ico) and I have copied it to my desktop temporarily, but, I have no idea how to re-apply this icon to my K:\ drive ?

Whilst surfing, I discovered a simple freeware program called "Drive Icon Changer" so I downloaded this program and tried to use it. It is very easy to use, but, try as I might, I cannot get this programme to interact with my K;\ drive ? . . so I've given up and uninstalled that programme, as, in this instance at least, it clearly does not do what it is supposed to be able to do.

I also saw some advice about going to a DOS prompt (I do not understand what this means or how to do it?) and deleting or editing something called the autorun.inf file - I suspect this type of action would be well beyond my understanding and I'd probably do more harm than good if I attempted to edit this sort of system file and got it wrong !

I've also done a system restore - to a back up point of a couple of days ... Read more

Answer:How do I restore the Seagate Drive Icon for my External Backup Drive?

Also just spotted an obsolete thread on this site where someone suggested:-

"Un-install the driver while the external drive is connected and then rebooted and let windows reinstall - everything should go back to normal when Windows re-discovered the drive".

I don't know if this might cure my problem ? . . but unfortunately I do not know how to uninstall a driver ?

Answer:Seagate External Drive 160gb (opening case to get out drive)help

If the drive is hosed then crack the case:
Look carefully along the joints for small openings, sometimes those are where you can insert a small flatblade screwdriver to start prying it apart. also take the same small screwdriver and start at some place on the case at the joints and see if you can pry one side away from the other to see where the tabs/catches are. You will have to explore to figure out your case. also on the bottom see if any labels there are covering screw holes - another trick they do. if you see a label that says this will void the warrenty if removed, that is a huge clue that label is covering a screw

Hi there,

Anyone knows of any reliable NAS? I've been looking at the WD 2TB Personal Cloud, Buffalo LinkStation Live, Iomega Home Media, and Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex.

I've read a lot of reviews of users who have experienced a lot of problems with them all, my main concern being the drives failing after sometime.

I have a WD TV Live Hub connected to my network. My alternative, if I don't find a decent, reliable NAS, is to get an external USB 3.0, attach it to the Hub, and use as it as a NAS.

Your input is appreciated,

Rawan

I have an external Seagate Drive that shows up in my Windows 10 desktop Device Manager under Disk Drives as "Seagate Desktop USB Device" and it states "Working Correctly" but it doesn't show as a drive in Explorer/MyPC.
I can feel vibrations suggesting the drive is alive and the drive light is on but I can't get to it.
Have tried different USB connections without change. Have tried uninstalling and rebooting without change.
Any ideas ?

Answer:Can't access my external Seagate Drive

Go into disk management, if it the drive does not have a letter assigned to it right click on the drive and select change drive letter and path to assign a drive letter.

A friend has broken the USB socket on his Seagate external harddrive making it unuseable.
There's a lot of info on the drive he wants to get off. If i open the case (if I can find a tool that will do it ) what am I going to find? Does it consist of a basic IDE harddrive with an adaptor to the usb so I can just hook it up as a slave via the IDE?
Thanks for any advice

I have recently had a new desktop PC. Prior to that I had a laptop where Seagate external drive was permanently connected via a USB port. I was running Win7, using FF browser and WLM.
With the new pc if I leave Seagate connected I can't boot up - the screen stops at BIOS. Everything seems to be running properly as long as I don't keep the external hard drive connected until boot up is complete.
What can I do so that I don't have to keep disconnecting Seagate each time I shut down?

Hope someone can help and that the solution is an easy one. Thanks.

I have an Asus eee 4gb surf I am just getting to know. It runs Linux. I bought a 60gb 2.0 Seagate portable drive that I wish to connect to it. I checked the drive on my Vaio with XP, and it seems to be fine. The eee doesn't detect it, and doesn't have all sorts of nice places for me to go to find new hardware etc- I assume that I need to download a driver- however Seagate doesn't appear to support Linux. Users on the Linux and eee forums I checked previously seem to be happily running their seagates. I tried doing a search and just don't have the heart or time to plow through thousands of web pages trying to find an answer- anyone here know? I would sure prefer not to have to load XP on the eee (god, that almost SINGS, doesn't it?) Looking forward to learning this from you all!
Thanks! kat:confused

Answer:Run Seagate external drive with eee Linux?

Cancel this ladies and gents- it's become a totally different problem- the drive I bought, on Ebay is a Momentus internal drive mounted by the third party vendor in an external case- I spoke w/Seagate, took the drive out- there is no life. Seagate is not surprised, and I'm sure you won't be either- definitely a DOA. So, the upshot is, I tried for a quick fix, when if I had just waited for payday, for 30 dollars more, I could have bought (and will buy) the portable drive, at MUCH HIGHER GB that is made to do the job- marry in haste, repent at leisure.

Okay, hey guy, here is my problem.

I've had this drive for a little while now, worked flawlessly for ages. I put movies and stuff on it and then watch it on my Xbox, I had about 30GB worth of data on it.

Now, what I want to do is: Format/reset the drive BACK to FAT32, it is currently in the "RAW" state. I have NO idea how this happened, I havent dropped it or anything it literally happened overnight. Have tried formatting at least 6 times, it always says "Format could not complete".

When I try to open it in my computer it just says "H: is not accesible, the parameter is incorrect". Have tried deleting the voume in disk management, that doesn't work either. Tried formatting through CMD, doesnt work.

I'm lost for ideas. Is my drive just screwed? I'm not bothered about getting the data back, I just want it to work again so I can get it back to FAT32 format.

Many thanks.

I have got a new seagate new hard drive of 250gb(2008)and it works fine but one day i deleted some important file and while i tried recovering the file with RECUVA, i wondered i got back the lost file but alongwith this i got many more files predated to my purchase of this hard drive. How is it possible to get a old files like dated back to 1995 now in this brand new hard drive. Have i been deceived? Or the company have put up a old used hard drive into a new box and sold it. Please clarify.Thanks...

I got a Seagate 1.5TB external yesterday. As soon as it was plugged into the outlet, the drive turned on, which was when I noticed it didn't have any kind of power switch, unlike the Iomega 500GB drive I've been using.

So I backed up my files and everything, no problems. I went to "Safely Remove Hardware" and it said it was fine to remove, so I did. Then with no power switch and no instructions in the box about this, I just unplugged the drive from the outlet.

When I went to back some new stuff up this morning, Vista asked me if I wanted to scan the drive for errors, like I'd yanked it out of the USB or something.

I'm worried about this. Is there some other way to turn the drive off and on without disconnecting it from a power source? Am I fine as long as I just use "Safely Remove Hardware"? Or should I just leave this thing on and plugged in 24/7?

Answer:Question about Seagate 1.5TB External Drive

Doing some searching, I found that other people have had the same problem (with turning it off). It seems like there is no way to turn if off (the comments here from other people state the same thing as you: Customer Reviews Of Seagate FreeAgent Desk ST315005FDA2E1-RK 1.5TB 7200 RPM USB 2.0 Silver External Hard Drive - Retail ). When you plug it back in and take a look at your files, are they corrupted in any way?

My seagate expansion desktop external drive seems to be dying. Its only a year old but i've filled it upto 90% of its capacity and that is when the problem started. Drive will show in my computer, disk management and even folders/files are visible/accessible but somehow i cant copy them. If i try copying, i'm slapped with extremely slow transfer speeds as below. Besides that it wont read some of the files so i have to skip them

I have even tried recovery programs and all of them recognized the drive properly but couldnt recover anything. I'm on win7 x64 and I feel there is a problem with the usb enclosure and so i want to pry it open and connect to the computer just like an internal drive. Can i do that without voiding the warranty?

Hello,
When attempting to back up files to my new external drive, the drive was not recognized by my computer. After reading other threads, I was able to assign a drive letter via disk management and run a backup. My question is, do I need to go thru this exercise EVERY time I plug in the external drive via the USB? Is there a way to make the drive map permanent? I had to do this again today to see the external drive with a drive letter via Start menu /Computer

Answer:Seagate 2TB external drive not recognized

When you buy a brand new drive from the shelf, there is no partition or partition letter on the drive. That you have to assign once and it will be good for the life of the drive (unless you change it later).

I purchased a Seagate 1Tb external drive that came with "Seagate Dashboard" software to manage back-ups. What I would like to do is create 2 500Gb partitions and use my Acronis software to make mirror images of both my desktop and laptop. Is this do-able? Would it be advisable to delete the "Seagate Dashboard"?

Thanks for any advice.

Answer:Format Seagate external drive

Simply just plug it in and do a format. It took you longer to ask how to do this, than it would to have just plugged the drive in and right click on it after it loads in Windows Explorer, and choose "Format".

OK, So i have an 1.5 External seagate drive that up until now has been running great, the main thing i keep on it is media which i access through a USB 2 connection. as of 2 days ago the drive has been acting funny in the middle of a playback it starts seeking or searching which is the best way that i can describe this. basically the media locks for a second the drive clicks like its searching and then the media restarts a few seconds later. The audio generally keeps going but the video hags during this time. I ran SEAtools looking for drive errors, defraged it, and ran a virus check on the drive to see if maybe i picked up a bug, nothing, i have also updated all my video and audio drivers, and by the time you read this probably the drives drivers also.

Any Ideas?

I updated to Windows 8.1 a couple of days ago on my desktop. Windows 8 was installed last June. I have a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex external drive connected to the computer for daily backups. Since upgrading to 8.1, this drive has been shutting itself off and then restarting at seeming random times. This event is accompanied by a soft buzz apparently coming from the desktop tower.

Anyone having similar experience? There are identical comments on Seagate's forum now but no answers.

Thanks,
Seattlerust

Answer:Seagate External drive shutting itself off in Win 8.1

Do you have any power settings for USB devices set in your Advanced Power Settings... Try shutting off the USB selective suspend setting.

There is also a setting for Hard Drives, you can put them on a timer. You might want to check yours, see if it is set to a low value, if it is, increase it to 30 minutes or so.

I thought GoFlex drives connected through Wifi?

I have a Seagate external drive that I save my backups to. I run my backup around midnight, when the computer has not been used for a good 5-6 hours. I have been getting errors with the backup that the drive has not been accessible and thus the backup is not successful.

When I double click on the drive icon in This PC , is takes about 20 seconds for the green bar to scroll across the top of the dialog box before I can see the full contents of the drive. The old Seagate software used to allow me to adjust the properties of the drives to make sure the drives stay awake at all times. As has been posted elsewhere, Seagate has not updated its software to be compatible with W10.

So my question is are there any other ways to make sure the external drive remains accessible after not being used for a while? Thanks for any thoughts.

Answer:seagate external hard drive

It sounds like the external harddrive has died - do you have copies of the files on your computer as well?

Assuming the drive is dead and it is not an issue with the USB connection, it is possible to get the files off of the harddrive though companies that provide such services often charge a high price.

I use a 1 TB Seagate drive for my backups and it has been clicking lately.  Less than a year old but I do a full system backup once a week which is 320 GB.  The backup failed Fri or better said, I unplugged it due to the somewhat noisy clicks after running too many hours.  Having been around computers for a while I am pretty sure this can't be good! Thoughts?

Answer:Seagate external drive clicking

Drives can fail at any time. Most fail after a longer time than less than 1 year, but there is no guarantee (there is a Seagate warranty). You have two symptoms suggestive of drive failure: an unusual noise (clicking), and a failed backup. You could consult the help at Seagate.com,  for example:Identifying and troubleshooting hard drive noise issueshttp://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/174571en?language=en_USAlso find your drive on this page and navigate to the appropriate diagnostic tool download:http://knowledge.seagate.com/services-software/apps
