Failed Driver software installation - TOSHIBA USB drive

Question: Failed Driver software installation - TOSHIBA USB drive

I have a toshiba canvio basics 1TB portable external hard drive usb powered. Model no. E05A100BBU2AK. I had purchased it some 3-4years back. It worked for some 4-5months or so. Then, whenever i plug it in the port, an error comes "FAILED DRIVER SOFTWARE INSTALLATION". The device doesn't come with a software installation CD or guide... It's plug and play only I think. The white LED light goes on flickering right when i plug it in till i remove it. A click sound along with metallic scratching sound comes from the device at a regular interval while plugged in & also I can feel the drive moving inside as soon as it is plugged.
I had tested it in all the ports of my system, also in many other systems of my friends but gives the same error on plugging in or the system does not identify it. It cannot be seen in My Computer. the hard drive is not getting recognised. In Device manager I cannot see any error in USB ports & everything is workng properly. USB ports works when other devices are plugged in.
Kindly help me with this issue.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Failed Driver software installation - TOSHIBA USB drive

I think the problem is within the enclosure's interface controllers. You can try to take the drive out of the enclosure and connect it directly to your PC via and available SATA port.

My Toshiba A100 laptop (processor [email protected]) has "lost" it's DVD drive. The drive no longer appears in "My Computer" although it does appear in the Device Manager list. The hardware ID for the drive is:IDE\CdRomMAT*[email protected]:A_DVD-RAM_UJ-850S_____1.10Enabling/disabling the drive in Device Manager makes no difference.Installing new drivers gives the following message:"Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware(Code 37)Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem code is 37."This happened once before when the laptop was still under guarantee and it was repaired under warranty. Unfortunately the guarantee has now expired. Can anyone please offer any suggestions on how to proceed? Thank you.

Hi Jose_Galdos,
That's listed as the Conexant Pebble High Definition Smart Audio.
Seeing as how it's HD sound, I think you'll need to load the Microsoft UAA driver first to get it running under XP.
Is  this the driver that you tried to install?

My laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ50. I ran a program called Speccy which listed my Audio card as Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI I did a search at HP website and it found the current driver. When I installed it, it gave the following error msg.

Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver.

Would appreciate advice on how to update my driver. I don't really know if a new driver will help, but my sound seems to stutter once in a while and I was hoping a new driver would fix this.

Hi folks,I'm not the most computer literate person so I will try to be as accurate as possible!Had my laptop refitted with Windows XP as the OS as opposed to Ubuntu which was on before. Only problem is no sound. No audio driver is installed. I went to the Fujitsu Siemens website (my brand of laptop) to download a new one. Only problem is when I run the setup it says "Driver installation failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver."I've tried running a driverchecker thing but it doesn't detect that the audio driver is absent (or just not working, not sure!) My computer is a Fujitsu Siemens, on the bottom is says Amilo Pro V3515. Not sure if you might need more information to help!Thank you ever so much, am a bit frustrated :)

Hi I have an emachine pc Model number (EMACHINES W5233) with Vista service pack 2. Im trying to install a Verizon Novatel 4G LTE usb551L modem and I get this error Driver Installation Failed:1603. then It tries to install VZAccess software and It says Error 2738 could not access VBScript Runtime for custom action. I have spent hours trying to get this installed, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Driver Installation Failed 1603

I may be rusty but lets see.

Make sure you have complete administrative rights, right click on driver install file and click "Run as admin"

Make sure User account control is turned off or is in lowest security mode for now.

Have you tried installing in safe mode?

Where are you attempting to install this driver from, a disk or from the internet?

It is possible to run a windows update and allow it to attempt and find a update.

Also try connecting the modem first VIA USB or ethernet to see if windows vista automatically configures it for you.

Hi All,
I am facing some hard time installing the driver for my Huawei USB data card. It works fine on 32bit Windows. The most amazing thing is it even worked on the 64bit Windows I have on this laptop but now stopped working.

I reinstalled Windows 2 days back and tried to install the data card immediately before installing any drivers / windows update. I was amazed to see that working (see attached screenshot "Successful Datacard installation_with new Win7 installation.png").

But after i installed all the drivers and ran windows update, the device stopped working. I tried to reinstall the driver, it just fails to install.

I am using Huawei EC 1262 USB mobile datacard. I have used the updated drivers available from both manufacturer's and service provider website.

Reliance Netconnect

But still issue persists. I am sure that some driver conflict is going on, but I am unable to trace.

Any help from anyone will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I recently purchased and installed windows 7 (yesterday). I thought I was ready, looked at the Toshiba website, found the page informing me as to what I need to do when installing Windows 7, but what I didn't see was that I need to run these things before I actually upgrade!

It says on the webpage "After getting Windows 7 package, run this...." Now I read that to mean after it's installed. So now I've already installed windows 7, but I hadn't updated my drivers, or upgraded some of the other functionality (like bluetooth)

How can I upgrade everything that's needed to be upgraded without having to re-install vista? Which isnt' realy an option as I used an upgrade of windows 7 so that I didn't lose any of my programs or files, and therefore going back to vista would mean I would lose all of them....

I need help ASAP please.

Answer:I can't run Toshiba Upgrade Assitant or driver update after Win 7 installation

Hi Denno,

Just a simple question: What Toshiba notebook you have?
I ask this because maybe this model isn?t Windows 7 supported and then you have to use the Vista drivers or collect new Windows 7 driver by yourself.

If you upgrade to Windows 7 it doesn?t update automatically your drivers, etc. You have to do this yourself!

I've been using firepod for a coupld year. Recently I found out that my IEEE1394 card chipset is not compatible. So I panic and uninstall the firepod driver. However, I decided to re-install it and I got BSOD during setup. I finally straighten it out (my PC had malware and software conflict) and when I tried to install it again, it kept saying it can't find the uninst.exe. I've done all the cleaning and a search didn't find any firepod related files. Yet the setup disc kept saying there's an existing version installed. I've cleaned the registry, the startup folder, control panel, actually HD folder...Where else could the "existing version" be?

I restarted and my attempts to download greet me with an error message saying "Download Failed: HTTP 404" I honestly have no idea what to do now, I went into device manager and there are yellow signs next to my graphics cards (Crossfire ati radeon 5800 series cards) I'm at a total loss I've been all over google and this forum is my last hope.

Satellite P100-160, PSPAAE, vista 32 bit,

Today Aero wasn't working and not available in graphics properties. Installed latest display driver from Toshiba UK site, Intel This version was actually older than my current driver but I thought that maybe as it was the only one availabel that it must be correct.

The driver install failed with an error (no details just 'an error has occurred'). Now I have no aero and my display resolution cant be set above 1280x800 - should be 1440x900

To say I am pisseed would be an understatement. Can anyone help? thanks

Answer:Re: Satellite P100-160 - Display driver installation failed

If Aero is not available I don?t think it?s display driver problem?

Anyway, have you removed the old display driver before you installed the new one? Go to device manager > right click on graphic card > uninstall. After reboot the display driver should be uninstalled and you can start with display driver installation.

If you install drivers make sure you are logged in as Administrator and antivirus/firewall is disabled. Restart once again and you should be able to choose the native screen resolution now.

Check this!!!

Hello, I have a bit of a problem. I have this controller as seen here:Xbox 360 Controller for Windows | Microsoft Hardware

Okay, I'm trying to hook this thing up to my new Dell Inspiron 15R. The thing is, when I plug it in, it keeps failing the driver installation. Ok now here is other part. I have used this controller perfectly fine on my previous HP Mini 210. As you know, that's a pretty weak computer compared to the one I just bought.

Now, after about 2 hours of researching, I've downloaded the current drivers from M$, and that didn't help at all. Next I came across someone who said check the device manager. Okay, so I did a cross examination with both computers and found the netbook had something called "universal serial bus usb controller" drivers with several others branching off while my Dell did not. Also the fact that the Mini uses USB2.0 while the Dell is 3.0.

So I've come to the conclusion that my Dell is lacking(and it is) these "Controller" drivers. Now the annoying part is when I use the device manager to search for updates, it says it can't find anything. I've googled around(and used the driver disk that came with my Dell) to no avail.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help with my problem. I'm just using the controller for gaming. It works fine in the netbook, so I don't think power to the controller is an issue. My M$ drivers are up to date so I don't think it's those either. If it helps, my computer says the contro... Read more

Hello. I am on Windows 10 1607 (not a Windows upgrade problem because I've been on the same version with this gfx card for a several months with no issues) I had an update for Nvidia GTX 950 drivers that failed to auto update. I tried to do a manual update and that failed too. Options to roll back the driver were greyed out and I couldn't get a restore point further back than when the issue started. I turned my computer off because I was frustrated. The next morning, I powered it on and now Nvidia is no longer working at all. Microsoft Basic Display was being used instead and Nvidia wouldn't show in BIOS. My resolution was lowered from 1920x1080 to 1024x768. I tried updating/reinstalling Nvidia drivers again. Still got same errors as day before. Pulled out graphics card and tested it on another pc. It works fine there and I was able to get the latest drivers installed on that. Put an Nvidia GTX 980 in my computer to see if I could get that to show and under Display Adapters (dev mngmt) it says Video Controller (VGA Compatible). My screen resolution now allows 1920x1080 but the GTX 980 will not work either. Every time WIndows 10 loads window pops up "precision x no supported hardware detected". Both cards work fine in the other PC. I don't know what else to check. Thanks to anyone that can help!

I am trying to update my Lenovo Ideapad U410's Wireless Display software mainly because of an error with the USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller that started occuring on January 1, 2013.  I have read in many different forums online that this WiDi upgrade will fix this specific error. However, after downloading the Intel Wireless Display Driver for Microsoft Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit) (V3.5.41.0) for my Lenovo Ideapad U410, an error occurs during the installtion every time. This error reads: InstallShield Wizard Aborted.  This platform is not compatible with Intel(R) WiDI or the application is in use.  Please see the log for more details.  Your system has not been modified.  To complete installation at another time, please close the Intel(R) WiDi application if it is running and run setup again with the compatible platform. Does anyone know how I can successfully upgrade the WiDi driver on my computer and avoid this error message? I am running Windows 8 64-bit.

"The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance"
I received this message while installing a USB driver. I have an 80GB External USB 2.0 hard drive attached that was working great a few days ago. I logged on one day to find this device "unrecognized". When I checked the device manager, it said that the driver was missing (?!). I searched for the driver on the MS website, and the device manager seemed to find a suitable one, but upon install I got the message above.

I found the old driver on my system – which seemed odd to me, deleted it, tried to reinstall and received the same message.

I understand that USB 2.0 is backwards compatible, plus it was working previously, so it seems strange that it suddenly died.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

My friend got a new laptop and didn't like Win 8 so she asked me to put Win 7 (64 bit) on it.  No problem, I thought, I've done this dozens and dozens of times (with Dell PCs at work).  Yeah right.  I'm stuck.  (Never dealt with AMD drivers before.)
So what I've got in Device Manager are 5 devices I've got to find drivers for (see image).  With Dell I always liked to start with ethernet and network controllers so I could then get on the internet and download the rest directly to the PC.  But I am not able to do that with the Toshiba.  I keep getting the error "The RealTek Network Adapter/Controller was not found.  If Deep Sleep Mode enabled Please Plug the Cable."  I troubleshooted this issue for about 3 hours to no resolve, but I came across something that said I needed to install the chipset first.  Which is where I get stuck.
I read that the AMD driver is a combination of the graphics and chipset, but I can't find a driver that works on the Toshiba website.  I downloaded and tried many but they won't execute.  So then I went to the AMD website and downloaded the Catalyst software and what I thought was the chipset/graphics driver.  But I can't figure out how to install this driver via the Catalyst.  It seems like you need an internet connection in order to install it.  Where am I going wrong here?

A graphics driver update installation was prompted today, which I accepted.  Upon completion of the download, my laptop went blank.  It now appears to be a brick. So, how do I get this fixed?  I can't reboot the laptop.  It has power to it, the circular "cursor" that would indicate some kind of installation was taking place, sat there forever, stopped and is now at a blank screen.  I get no further options to do anything else. I don't have a restore disk as there is no optical drive in this laptop.  How do I get my laptop functional again without a screen and operating system with which I can work?  There is no safe mode - there is NO "mode" at all. I wish I could provide more details, but I cannot get device specific information as the laptop is a brick as I said previously. I have information with this new laptop that says I can call HP within the first 90 days for free assistance.  When I do that, it tells me to go online.  Fortunately, the laptop is not my only pc (I am on a desktop pc now for clafication) or I wouldn't be able to do that.  I've tried a few links on the support page which tell me they are not functioning(?). How am I supposed to fix this laptop without tech support that was promised by HP within the first 90 days? Help please.  Thank you.

Two days ago my Toshiba notebook's hard drive (MK8025GAS) started making screechy noises and before I had a chance to arrange backup media, it stopped working. I had a chance to get it running three-four more times but it didn't stay up enough to boot. I have already tried the freezing and shaking method, but it no longer works. The times it came back up was after drive sat in freezer for hours and with couple shakes.

I have attached an MP3 of the sound it's now making. Can anyone tell me if this is a motor, head or logic board problem? I'm am sort of ruling out the logic board, since the original symptoms started with disturbing noises.

I have ordered two identical drives, just to compare apple to apples. I am planning to format one of the new drives, do error check, then open the drive, close it back up and error check again to see what happens. I have read about people doing this without a clean room and getting success. If the new drive doesn't go bad with couple attempts, I will open the old drive to see if anything inside got loose. If nothing is loose, then the next step is to try to see if I can swap the disks between the two new drives and see if I can still get them to work. If a few attempts work, then I will swap the disk from the old drive to one of the new drives.

Any opinions?

Hello everyone. Hope you are all doing good today and able to beat the heat on this very hot day. I have this really old laptop HP Pavillion dv6000. Originally it came with Windows Vista installed back when Windows Vista was first released but eventually I upgraded the laptop to Windows 7. Everything was fine and working until recently where the laptop has no sound. I try to install the sound driver from the HP website and it says "driver installation failed: could not find the device for this driver." No matter what I do I cannot get sound on this laptop. If I go to YouTube and watch a video the video plays just fine but with no sound. When I click on the sound icon next to the time on the desktop bar a window pops up that says "troubleshooting has completed" Problems found: "Hardware changes might not have been detected." I am not sure what is up with this or how to fix it but any help is appreciated thanks.

Answer:It says "driver installation failed could not find the device for this driver"

A Vista laptop likely doesn't have Win7 drivers written...try re-installing the originals from the Driver CD and reboot...Plus it's likely you are trying nVidia or AMD drivers gettin it to work which is a no-no on a laptop....

If so, you only need to find installation media.

So I just did a clean install and when my pc starts I get driver was not successfully installed. I uninstalled a Ethernet controller driver. I don't need it only used it for updates sometimes I get booted from wireless why does it keep popping up every time windows starts and how do I fix it do I just disable it from device manager or is there something I am missing?

Answer:Driver Software Installation

Hello Windows 95 mate we need more system specs please as there is not enough to go on with what you have put in. The motherboard model would be extremely helpful.

If you are relying on the Windows driver update feature then I have to say I always go to the manufacturer of any given device as I find the Windows feature is rather lacking.

My former hard drive with my MBR on it failed. This hard drive was/is 750GB and when I purchased my 'main' 2TB hard drive I made another fresh install of Windows. In other words, I had two installations of Windows on two separate hard drives. However, the MBR is located on the now-failed 750GB hard drive, and so my 2TB install of Windows won't work. I have tried (and failed) at repairing or otherwise installing a new MBR on the 2TB hard drive. I am at a loss at what to do. Perhaps I am missing something big or am making a small oversight, I really don't know. Help appreciated!

Answer:Hard Drive with MBR Failed; how do I get main installation working?

If there was no MBR on the 2tb HDD drive, Windows would not install.

For old 750gb HDD drive
Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

I have a problem with windows "Driver Software Installation".

I have an Audigy 2 ZS card installed. Every time I boot the
machine the ""Driver Software Installation" starts and finalize
with saying that the card is ready to use. This is not correct
as there is no sound. Every time I reboot the same thing happens.

Now, I have disabled Windows Update, I have disabled the devices
etc. but nothing stops this ""Driver Software Installation" from
starting at the next boot.

I would like to install Daniel Kawakami's Audigy_SupportPack_2_18_0001_W7
but when I start, it says it can not install untill I have rebooted
from a previous install which is the "Driver Software Installation"
failed installation. And rebooting of course starts the "Diver Software
Installation" again.

Is there any way to disable the ""Driver Software Installation"?

Ok, I have spent a few days on this and I am about to take a sledge hammer to this laptop and just call it a day.

Laptop =Dell Insipron m5010
Windows 7 Home Premium

Now I have two Mice, both Microsoft.

Wired Comfort Mouse 4500
Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500.

I spent over an hour on the phone with Microsofts tech support and the guy solved nothing. The wired one is hopeless it seems.
We deleted all the drivers, re-installed the .inf, you name it.

Now the wireless one has a glimmer of hope.

If I plug it while the computer is off, it will work when I turn it on.
The problem occurs after about a minute of logging in, the Driver Software Installation kicks in and causes my computer to freeze.

It insists on installing, Microsoft Nano Transceiver 2.0.
I do not want this to install!

No matter what it comes up though.
If Win7 Home had gpedit I could just block it, but it doesn't
Thanks Microsoft
I disabled automatic update, so at least now when I unplug it stops trying and doesnt freeze the computer, but I still can't use the mouse.

If anyone has any ideas on how to completely block the Driver Software Installation thing, I would be forever grateful.

Answer:How do I block Driver Software Installation?

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your problem...probably someone else does, but if I were to take a sledge hammer to anything, it wouldn't be the laptop, but the mice.

The only reason that I'm posting this at all, is because it reminds me of a time, years ago, on a HP desktop problem, that HP handed me over to MS to solve. I called early in the morning, and spent the entire day, until the rep told me that it was closing time, and that someone would get back in touch with me in a couple of weeks. At that point, the computer had become completely unusable, and wouldn't even boot. Need I say that I returned to computer to where I bought it, and built one for myself, and I really resist calling tech support for MS or any other manufacturer. That is when I learned about forums such as this. They haven't solved all of my problems, but I have never found them a waste of time like I described. At first, I thought it was just my own ignorance that caused the problem, but later came to realize that it was just my ignorance that the rep took advantage of to spend the day on the time clock without really doing anything, except amusing himself by having me stand on my head.

I've recently replaced my motherboard/CPU/harddrive and upgraded to XP. My DVD drive (a Toshiba SD-M1202, badged as a Creative drive) appears to work correctly - device manager reports no problems, I can play audio cds, view the contents of cd-roms/dvds and copy files from them. BUT - if I try to INSTALL a program from a cd-rom or dvd in this drive, the installation fails with various error messages, eg "the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on ok to terminate the application". The drive worked fine under my old win98 setup - this first started when I tried to do a clean install of XP onto a formatted hard drive.I had to use my cd writer to install XP and all my software, and of course I can't install anything that's on a dvd. I guess this must be a hardware problem as it started before I installed XP - I've tried swopping the DVD drive and cd writer on the data cable, but the problem stays with the DVD drive. Thanks for any suggestions!steve

I have Portage Z930 and I'm wondering is TOSHIBa offering some kind of auto update driver software?

For example on mu Lenovo or my desktop (MSI) I do have apps that check currently installed version of drivers with the one available on WWW and allow to download and install newer ones.

Does toshiba offer similar software?

Thanks for reply
Best regards

Answer:Portege Z930 - Does Toshiba offer some kind of auto driver update software?

Yes, the tools like Service Station or Tempro notifies you about the new drivers available for the Toshiba notebook.

Usually such tools are already preinstalled on the notebook. In my case the Toshiba Service Station was already installed by default.

I recently bought a Samsung P2 music player. However I am having trouble connecting it to my computer. I plug it into the usb and it runs fine for a few seconds. It is when windows vista tries to install new driver/software that the player stops working and i get a "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" error. Does anyone know how to fix the problem or at least how to make it so that windows does not install the new driver everytime i plug it in. I have tried going into advanced system settings and set it to never check for drivers when i connect a device, but this didnt stop it from installing the new driver. Thanks

Pay special attention to how drivers are handled in Win7 as it is not like XP at all. First do all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates, after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware (Step 3). Only import drivers still missing after all Updates are done.

To get the cleanest slate for a perfect install I'd also first wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command

Hi all,

Apologies if this isn't the right place for this query...

I'm developing a software app in .Net for use with a specific USB barcode scanner. This barcode scanner has a manufacturer's driver for serial emulation. So far so good, however I'd like to create a simple double-click installer for the driver which the end-users can run prior to plugging in the hardware as opposed to plugging in the hardware, following the add new hardware wizard, not auto-searching for the drivers, specifying the drivers location etc etc etc. These end-users are not overly tech savvy and I'd like to keep things as simple as possible.

Does anyone know of what I can use to wrap the manufacturers drivers (.inf files) in a simple installer?

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Updating the driver didn't pan out, neither did uninstalling and rebooting (driver installation failed on reboot). Drive was working before. I know this can be solved; seen this before on somebody else's computer a year ago. On the other hand, maybe the driver isn't compat with 64bit Ultimate--but it was OK under 32bit Home Personal.

Hey guys I was trying to partition my drive using 'Partition Magic 8' apparently 33% of the way in it came across bad sectors and aborted saying nothing had been changed.

Turns out I couldn't even boot my computer after... so much for 'nothing changed' right?

Anyway so I plugged it into this computer as a slave drive. It shows up in My Computer but as 0 bytes and when trying to open it, it says the drive is corrupted.

So is there any good file recovery software that anyone knows of? Anything that someone would recommend to me, paid or not paid.

Also as a side note, would it be better to format the partition and then try to find my files? As far as I know a format doesn't do much except for say the data is avaliable to be overwritten and I heard from a friend that if it's unaddressable it'd be better to format it and then try and look for stuff because while its corrupted part of it is unreadable by any program.

Answer:Partitoning Failed, Drive Destroyed... Any good recovery software?

Recuva does a good job from what I hear: Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

As for the part about partitioning the drive first. I would try using Recuva first. If it won't let you search for files on it, do a quick format. It does more or less what you described. A full format erases everything.

Anybody out there know of any portable (keychain) USB flash drives that DON'T require installation of a driver to use it on a computer with XP? I can't install one in the library's network.

Answer:Flash drive without driver installation?

It's probably not the driver that prevents you (XP requires no driver for these in normal cases), its more likely the PC's System Policy Settings that stop it.

Otherwise the library PC's could be compromised very quickly if the flash drive contained any malware or malicious scripts.

Hello, everyone. I'm trying to install a driver on my computer that will allow me to use a SanDisk Cruzer Micro Flash Drive. My operating systems is Windows 98SE. As you've probably guessed, it's an older machine, with USB 1.1.

I've downloaded the proper driver from SanDisk, and went through the installation without trouble. Then I plug in the flash drive, and nothing happens. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver multiple times, to the same effect. I've checked with Add Hardware, and the driver is listed as installed, but it also claims that there are "problems" with the driver and Windows cannot detect the drive. (Between 'drive' and 'driver', I hope I'm not confusing anyone.)

I've been going back and forth with SanDisk's tech support about this problem, and having finally convinced them that everything I've typed above is true, they are now claiming I have to go into my Registry and start altering things. Now, I'm a little out of my depth here, but I do know that fooling around with the Registry, if you don't know what you're doing, is a good way to screw your computer up royally.

So I'm requesting help with this. I'd really like to get this flash drive working so I can move my files to my new laptop and be done with the troublesome world of Windows 98. If anyone has a fix that doesn't require registry-work, I'd be very grateful. If not, I... Read more

Dear community,

My wife's HP Pavilion zv5000 laptop, which is running Windows XP (or was running Windows XP when it ran!), is in dire straits. It won't even boot now, and it exhibits symptoms I associate with both huge software glitches and mechnical hard-drive failure. Let me give you the background.

Saturday afternoon, my wife began installing Lego Mindstorms software on her laptop. Then we were called away from the house and, leaving in haste, left the installation process unattended.

Later on, when we returned, we were sitting quietly in the living room when we heard an odd humming noise, which we soon found was coming from the forgotten laptop. The installation process had stopped, it seemed, and so had the computer. The noise the machine was making was one it had never made before; it typically operates in silence. The noise sounded like the sound a desktop machine can make when accessing the hard drive; however, the sound the laptop was making was louder than that.

Since then, the Pavilion laptop has not worked. Most times it won't even boot to Windows; instead, it gives an error message like "disk read error" or "Windows encountered an error and had to be shut down... beginning dump of physical memory." These messages are delivered in white text on a blue screen. Other times it goes into what seems to be an endless loop of startup attempts, each accompanied by white text on a black screen.

A few times it has gotten t... Read more

When Windows "finds new hardware" and gives the options for the drivers, select to "install from a specific location" and then browse to the aappropriate folder or file on the CD.If the drivers you downloaded were in a .zip file or self-extracting .exe file, you will almost certainly have to extract them from the compressed zip/exe file first.

I recently formatted my c drive and now i am reinstalling all the software. I keep all the setups of software in my external hard drive. For installing the software I coy the setup folder of the required software on my laptop, then install it.

Is straightaway installing the software by accessing the external hard drive okay? Does it make any difference in the installation time or any reduction in life of hard disk performance.

Or should I always install through my laptop hard drive?

I am running windows 8.1 pro

Answer:installation software from external hard drive or internal hard drive

Your method is as good as any. If it works, keep doing it.

Hi everyone, I'm having a little problem. I was trying to install windows 7 on a Gateway w350a laptop, and I get an error. Prior to this error, I deleted the vista partition that was on it, im guessing along with all the drivers. The error says that the computer can't detect the hard drive drivers, and doesn't let windows 7 start, even though it's installed. I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong, or if there's a way to keep the drivers. I just did a factory reinstall of windows vista, but I want to give 7 another try. Thanx

Answer:I need some help with my windows 7 installation on a gateway laptop. (hard drive driver error)

Can you give me the exact error msg and when you get this msg?

Hi all,I'm looking at replacing a HD on the GF's x230.  I have the Windows 7-64bit migration all figured out (WET) but I was cruising around the Lenovo site and I'm clueless about how to install ALL Lenovo drivers once I have Windows installed. Can I use the SCCM as a home user? Do I just install Lenovo update once Wins 7 is complete and it will self detect whats needed? Or is there some sore of mechanism on the x230 I'm currently unaware of?  I see Lenovo has a program similar to Windows Easy Transfer but they never make clear if it will back up Windows AND Lenovo apps and drivers.  Would rather use WET then a Driver package from Lenovo.Studying for my A+ cert now so I'd really like to gain experience and get this sucker migrated properly!!Thanks in advance everyone!!

I was tried to update Bios to 1.12 but not successed..It always came out this message " Driver Loading Failed. The Utility cannot proceed."..I tried to update under safe mode, still not work..I tried to use Winflash, it came out "Cannot open new BIOS file"..There's only one method that I didn't try is that burn a ISO CD and connect to External CDROM.. but I don't have External CDROM..The reason that I update Bios is that I want to install Toolbox; otherwise, I won't take this risk..For futhermore information click following link..

Answer:X120e update BIOS failed "Driver Loading Failed. The Utility cannot proceed"

Sounds like something wonky with your Windows install. I'd avoid doing a BIOS update through such an install.

Does this just mean the HD is not responsing...? I checked all connections and they seem fine. HD is over 10 years old...

Answer:On Bootup It says Primary Drive Failed Slave Drive failed.....

Probably the HD, but you should try another device (HD or CD-ROM) in the motherboard IDE connector to make sure the motherboard controller hasn't failed.  If more than 1 device on IDE cable, the failure of 1 will cause the error you see.

This is a bit of a convoluted story but here goes...

I have an old PC (the oldest of several) which in which I want to upgrade 3 PATA HDs for 2 large (500GB) SATA-1 drives.

PC spec = Asus P4 PE, P4 Northwood 533FSB 3.06GHz, 1 GB pc2700 ram, 2 soundcards (I'm a musician), Win XP SP2 etc.

The first thing I did was enable RAID/SATA in BIOS & then install the Promise 376 Fasttrack RAID/SATA driver on all OS partitions (4 in all, spread across the 3 drives).

Now, of course, a get a quick POST message saying that "no RAID/SATA device detected", because I haven't installed them yet. However this message then disappears and my boot manager utility loads as usual (BootIt NG).

Then it occured to me that I hadn't installed either the Intel Application Accelerator or Chipset Software Installation utilities (as listed on the available downloads for P4 PE at Asus site).

So I installed the IAA first on one partition - but when I tried to reboot into this, the "no RAID/SATA" message came up before and after the BootItNG screen and the system rebooted again.

I got it to boot into the partition again & promptly uninstalled the IAA because I thought it was causing me the problem.

Then I installed the Chipset Installation utility.

This time, after rebooting into the "music" partition, many of the music software applications were not sending MIDI to one of the soundcards correctly, and the selected audio drivers had changed (f... Read more

Answer:Possible problem after Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility installation ?

both the chipset and the IAA are supposed to be installed FIRST THING after the install of the OS...I suspect that the later day install is what caused all the drivers to go *poof*...if your system is operating OK at this point just go with it, but if/when you do a wipe and clean install remember to install these items the first time you boot into your clean install, reboot, then carry on with installing other items...

Hi All,

Upon trying to install MS Office 2007 from the CD (D: drive), it pauses about 60% of the way and I can hear (and slightly feel) the CD "skipping" making repetitive thud sounds. I have to continually open the CD drive and close it to keep it going, but then installation tops until about 65% where the CD just skips.

I tried moving the contents of the CD onto my C: drive and install from there but that doesn't seem to work correctly.

I don't know why my CD drive is now skipping - this happened only once about 7 months ago when I installed a game - but that was easily fixed by simply reinstalling the 2nd time..

All my movies/dvds/music CD's play fine... so why is it different with this MS Office?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1505 Laptop, using Windows 7.

Do I need new drivers or is it simply a faulty DVD drive? If it's the latter how hard is it to change and do I have to get the specific one for my laptop?

Thanks much and anything is appreciated.

Answer:New CD Drive needed? Software Installation "stuck."

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

Answer:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If... I want to install a program that craetes virtual dirves to be able to mount images. But the installation was not completely successful: adding of SCSI adapter failedTrying again to add a virtual drive it also says that I would not have enought rights, but I'm admin. Searching the net, I found out, that it could have something to do with the bios settings for acpi, but I can't find any option like this. Btw: latest bios version installed and other computers do have options for acpi in the power section. Or maybe the ThinkPad Power Management Driver blocks it?

Answer:W510, Win7 pro 64bit, virtual drive failed, scsi adapter failed, bios settigs for acpi

If you're talking about Daemon Tools, you probably need to manually update its outdated SPTD to the latest version:

I was wondering if Toshiba could explain their choice here.

My laptop recently got sent in for repair because it burnt itself out due to me using Nvidias own drivers on my p100-240 (pspa3e).

The problem here is that:

a) Toshibas drivers for this card are well over a year old and sometimes buggy in new games
b) Toshiba does not seem to have followed the Nvidia spec (that or there is a major ACPI issue in their bios...)

so, Upon using the Nvidia drivers the laptops fan does not kick in, sending the systems temporature up to 106cand finally turning it off. It turned back on but basic graphics acceleration then failed to work.

SO, can we get an updated driver build? OR some kind of fan control app? or can you update your bios to enable nvidias drivers to function?

I feel like I cannot use my laptop for its purpose at the moment- I have reverted to installing a non-ACPI pc driver to force the fans to stay on which works well but then basic system functions like turn off do not work.

I have also been advised that this design flaw could be considered to make the system "not fit for purpose" under which case I could just return the laptop under the Sale of Goods act.

Though really, i'd just like to get my system working properly. It's bad enough not being able to run Linux on it, but even worse that windows doesnt work properly with it with official drivers.

One final question: Can I get the older BIOSes? several fixes work with them but n... Read more

Answer:P100-240: Toshiba GPU driver is old, Nvidia driver doesn't enable the fan?

>was wondering if Toshiba could explain their choice here.
If you want to hear anything from Toshiba then you have to contact them. This forum is only a user to user forum and unfortunately you will not find anyone from Toshiba here.

But maybe you want to hear my opinion;

>My laptop recently got sent in for repair because it burnt itself out due to me using Nvidias own drivers on my p100-240 (pspa3e).
>a) Toshibas drivers for this card are well over a year old and sometimes buggy in new games
Well, many Toshiba notebooks are delivered and equipped with the same graphic cards. Maybe you have to look in other notebook series which are delivered with the same card for a newer GPU driver.
But, you are right and generally the Toshiba graphic drivers are a little bit older as the original one from GPU manufacturer.
Why? First of all the nVidia or ATI original drivers are not designed for the notebook usage. These are drivers for desktop PC graphic cards. I visited the area for mobile drivers and found a info that I have to look on the notebook manufacturer site!!! This said everything!!!!

>b) Toshiba does not seem to have followed the Nvidia spec (that or there is a major ACPI issue in their bios...)
As mentioned above the original GPU drivers are not designed for the notebook usage.
Why? Because the notebook GPUs cannot be cooled like the graphic cards for the desktop PC!!!
The Toshiba own drivers support an overheating protection which helps t... Read more

Same error again... I was using Google Earth, and my external monitor went black (this happens when I'm out of RAM, but I have additional 4 GB paging file, and 16 GB physical RAM), I turned my laptop to sleep (usually I can fix this black screen problem by turning to sleep and back on) and back on, and it showed BSOD - SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION:

DMP file -!L88W0LDa!IQoTAfjpK...yswv_OOrNhyrUU

BTW I don't have those crash-causing NVIDIA drivers installed for 2 months now, all I have is Intel HD 4600 Graphics which I installed in non-traditional way (by using 'Have Disk'), because there is no other way, Toshiba doesn't provide drivers like these anymore, so I had to update using original Intel drivers (they are compatible with my processor and intel graphics version).

I just ran driver verifier, and here are 3 BSOD messages that showed up

I have completed my first custom build computer everything so far has worked fine, but on attempting to install Windows 7 I keep running into this problem. I know this is a common error because of the large amount of forums discussing it, but I still see no fixes despite trying many of the suggestions. Please help!

My specs are:
MSI Motherboard 970A-G46
(need to know any other specifics, let me know)

Answer:Windows 7 Installation "required CD/DVD drive deivice driver is missing..."

The CD/DVD device driver is a part of Windows and is installed automatically. What type of CD/DVD drive do you have? Is it an IDE or is it SATA? Boot into Setup (Bios) is the drive listed there? If IDE, set the jumper pin to CS (cable select)
Try the Microsoft FixIt: Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

I was running Win XP which finally failed and I was able to enter in safe mode (only, no networking) and ran all the tests I could think of. Hard drive is ok and so I attempted to repair WinXP from the installation CD. However, the PC failed to shut down and restart so I eventually force closed it. Now it won't even load past the initial black windows screen, don't even get the option of going into safe mode.

Is there any way I (or someone) could access the hard drive to retrieve the data? I guess I could reinstall the OS but don't want to do that yet as I'll definitely lose the data.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:Win XP failed, repair failed -- can I access hard drive?

Sure, there are many ways. Depending on what you want in the end decides how to proceed.

If you have a lot of space free on the drive, you could boot off a linux dvd and create a new partition. You'd have to shrink the existing, then make a new one. Then you could just copy over the data from the old one to the new one. Then reinstall windows onto the old partition, and copy your stuff back (then delete the partition and expand the remaining to fill the rest of the space).

You can also just boot off a linux disk and copy it to a thumb drive or whatever.

Or you could remove the hard drive and place it in another computer.

Also, I'm not convinced you lose the data if you install Windows again. I'm pretty sure you can install without formatting the drive. Your programs won't work, but it shouldn't overwrite any of your data. This is a non-ideal solution though.
