Windows 8 destroyed my Buffalo 3GB external HDD

Question: Windows 8 destroyed my Buffalo 3GB external HDD

Hi

I bought a brandnew Buffalo 3TB external HDD Drive station (USB 3.0) (HD-LB3.0TU3-EU)
and wanted to make a second backup of my files which are on another Western Digital 3TB USB 3.0 external harddrive.

So i plugged both in and both were recognized without problem. Then i began to copy the files from the WD to the Buffalo harddrive (both attached via usb 3.0) and it just copied 1 folder and told me that the original file location is not anymore existing and stopped copying.
And somehow my WD drive was not showing up anymore.(but still my buffalo drive)
The WD even did not show up in the disc management setup!
So i decided to reboot and before i did it i removed the buffalo drive via the "safely remove hardware and eject media" button(Right at the startup corner right bottom of the screen).
Instantly after hitting this button the buffalo drive began to make a horrible repeating scratching noise, like trying to park or move the hdd heads continuously). I waited 30 secs then i pushed the shoot down button, nothing after 2 mins waiting for the shutdown of windows i pushed the reset button and reentered win8

Fortunately my wd drive with my files was recognized but not the buffalo drive anymore
At the disk management setup it gives me the initialise disk where i can choose between MBR and GUID but with both options it gives me an I/O drive error
I see it as an offline HDD and cannot do anything with it not even remove it.
And i connected it on my Windows 7 laptop, same problem.

So looks like Win 8 destroyed it i lost 150 bucks....im now quite pissed with win 8 and cannot change even back to win7.
I have another external hard drive which has important data on it and its the same brand as the hdd win8 destroyed. So i cannot use it because i fear win8 will do the same on this drive...

Preferred Solution: Windows 8 destroyed my Buffalo 3GB external HDD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows 8 destroyed my Buffalo 3GB external HDD

I don't understand how Windows 8 could "destroy" a hard drive. It sounds like a hardware failure to me. Return the drive to your vendor.

Before upgrading from XP to 7, I made backup on 2 external drives. I tested both backup, and they tested fine.
I then reformated my laptops hard drive & installed Windows 7. No problems were reported.
However I could not access the data on the 2 external hard drives. Windows 7 reported that they were unreadable and that I needed to reformat them!
The 2 hard drives were connected to my laptop when I installed Windows 7
I had to take both too a comuter geek who spent 2 days recovering my data - at a huge cost to me.
I am not impressed!!

Answer:Windows 7 Installation destroyed external hard drive

Hi, sorry to hear about your predicament. Though you had to pay someone to recover your data, at least it was recovered.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the general advice around here when installing Win 7 is to install / upgrade with the bare minimum hardware connected to the CPU, i.e., mouse, keyboard & monitor.

I recently bought a BUFFALO  External  USB  DVD  RW ;  I am unable to use it with my COMPAQ  MINI  110-1100 DX LAPTOP  Product  Number : VM146UA#ABA . My mini Laptop does not have an inbuilt DVD RW. Will  somebody please guide about as to how to use this External DVD to install any software CD on to my Laptop ? Also, how to see & listen to a DVD using this DVD RW ? Can I use this DVD RW with my Desk-Top PC also ? Please guide in details and help me. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:BUFFALO External USB DVD RW

What is the model of your Buffalo DVD-RW drive? Your laptop should automatically detect the drive when you plug it in via USB. Your drive will definitely work with your desktop, too.In the rare case that drivers need to be installed for your DVD drive, you would want to go to the official Buffalo site to download them.

My external is 2 500g hard drives and is preset for FAT32

I want to be able to put files bigger than 4gs on it, so I have to change it to NTFS, right?

The wall I run into is . . . I will be buying a Macbook Pro in a few weeks and I want to be able to use the HD between the two. From what I read it looks like I could do that with FAT32, but not with NTFS.

I want to know the best thing to do so I don't have to reformat my drive later and have this all be a toilet flush.

I really want to prepare for my mac.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

This one is really bugging me because I have checked everything, and I cannot fathom out what is causing the disconnection apart from, either is a MB issue or driver issue...?

Whenever, I turn on my computer and Windows loads it will not load the USB External HDD which has been set to AUTO so it will load when Windows loads. I have tried manual switch but this does not work either. The HDD is a combo HDD with Firewire and USB 2.x although, if I use Firewire instead its fine...?

What is happening is that Device Manager in disabling the device for some reason, and the only way in which I can get Device Manager to recognise the "EXT HDD" is to search for new hardware and then it works...?

The only thing that I found to be a little odd was there is no set power showing for the USB Mass Storage Device 0 mA I know it is the right port location because it is the same number.

Any ideas why this has started to do this...? Any suggestion would be deeply appreciated.

There is something I forgot to mention and that is the battery needs replacing. I have never had a battery die on me on a motherboard ever. The only conclusion I can think for the reason why the battery has been drained in the ROC Logo on the MB I used to leave on and I think it drained the motherboard battery. If the power is terminated, example the PSU is turned off then I have to reset the BIOS. Although, I don't think this is related but I thought I would mention it.

Answer:Buffalo External USB 2.x HDD keep disconnecting

It wouldn't hurt to pick up and install a new battery.

You should also take a look and try to find the USB drivers for your motherboard (or just the motherboard drivers), as it sounds like it isn't recognizing it properly. Also make sure that Legacy USB support is enabled in BIOS.

Hi allfamily member purchased one of these and proceeded to install it without reading any documentation. 2 basic questions I need help with:1. Theyre running XP pro but chose the FAT32 option to format the drive during install. Main PC is NTFS. Will this causae any problems?2. Assuming the answer to q1 is no - the drive has install files, log files, and folders all over the place on it. Once installed and back up is running is it safe to either tidy these files into one folder and leave them on the external drive, or take them off the drive to increase space, and keep them on main PC?Hope that all makes sense.ThanksSi67

Hi,

I've got a 1TB Buffalo USB external drive. It worked great until about 2 days ago. It was pre-formatted to FAT32, needing to put a 10 gig file on it, I reformatted it to NTFS. No problem.

Except my Xbox, my laptop, and my PS3 didn't recognise it anymore. Only the desktop did. I checked online, it wasn't a problem, cause PS3 and Xbox only read FAT 32 hard drives... so i knew i just needed to format back, and it would all be fine.

So I tried to format it back, but FAT32 was not an option. only exFAT. After reading about for a bit i found out i could format in FAT32 from the CMD dos Prompt.

So I tried that. It stayed at 0% for what seemed like forever, and then the system shut down.

I rebooted and now my drive isn't there. It shows in device manager as "hard drive" with no extra details, but says it's working.

It shows in Drive Manager, but is listed as "Unallocated" and "not initalised"

I know i need to initialise it to get it show again, however anytime i try I get this error:
Data Error (Cyclic redundacy check)

Can someone please help? I dont care if i lose all the data on it, I just want it reformatted and reinitalised so i can start using it again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps in any way.

Hi, does anyone know of "Buffalo"s reliability? It seems my current external drive is about to give up. Its a Western Digital 'My Book' 320gb and its making odd "clicking noises".Yesterday it disappeared from 'my computer' and i eventually got it working after pulling out all the plugs and re-booting pc. The "Buffalo DriveStation" 500gb looks a good buy from Play.com for 50. Any thoughts please - Tony

While trying to download some files to a friend's Dell laptop, my entire 88 gig file volume out of a 180 gig external drive disappeared. Now it shows up as zero content. I intend to switch off autorun and plug the drive into another PC for virus/malware scanning, but this will not explain what happened. Can there be some nasty out there that is so bad that it permanently destroys a hard drive?
Immediately after the wreck, we had all sorts of screen advice on downloading antivirus software at considerable cost.

Potentially yes since malware can do just about anything it is designed to do.

Your friends PC needs to be properly cleaned and perhaps your PC does now too.

I have a 500GB Buffalo external hard drive that I use for music, pictures and misc backed up documents. The problem is, I seem to be missing a few GB's.

The HD shows:
173 GB of music
2 GB of pictures
5 GB of documents
180 total should be listed....

.... but instead it tells me that 446 GB are being used and the HD is nearly full! For the life of me, I can't figure where all this "extra stuff" is located. Why would my HD be saying it's so full, but I can't find anything else on it?

I did a disk cleanup on the HD, then I did a Windows defrag on it... and it still shows 446 GB being used in total.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Steve

I have just purchased a 500G Buffalo external hard drive, HD-PC500U2/BK-EU. Plug it in and it is recognised by my P.C (running XP) but I cannot go any further and cannot run the DriveNavi.exe file which is on the external HD. All I get are the following error messages

The application failed to inialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

and

Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

and

I have trawled the net to try to find a solution and Buffalo support are no use at all...and extremely frustrated and would appreciate any help, please

That sounds like an autorun request for the bundled DriveNavi.exe program. And "trawled the net"? . I think you've gotta format the HDD. That might just do the trick.

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation (LS-QVL), it is configured for RAID 10 and has 4 Terabytes of capacity. I am not using anywhere near the full capacity (instead I am only using about 6%!). It has occurred to me that I should make an off-site backup of the content on the LinkStation. Toward this end I would like to backup the contents of the LinkStation to an external USB hard drive.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to backup files from this NAS to an external hard drive? If it is possible any advice on how to set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Answer:Backing up Buffalo NAS to an external hard drive

Unless your NAS has a provision to mount the external hard drive via USB and supports file transfers between the volumes, you're going to have to do this over the network with the external hard drive connected to a PC that is connected to the NAS.

I have a desktop PC that does not come with any USB 3 ports on its mainboard. Yesterday I bought a PCI-E to USB 3.0 expansion card with two ports.

I installed the card, connected the floppy power cable, and windows 10 installed its driver with no issues. There is no yellow mark in the device manager.

First I connected my USB 3.0, 2.5" Seagate drive and windows properly recognized it and set its speed at USB 3.0. I copied a lot of files at a constant max speed of about 95 MB/s. So far everything is good.

Then I tried my 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive. No matter what I did, it simply would not connect at USB 3 speed, only USB 2. I tried both ports. The drive's external power adapter is connected.

Windows does know that it's a USB 3 device, since it shows the message "This device can perform faster if connected to USB 3.0".

The drive does come with a cable with blue USB 3 connectors.

Anyone ever experienced such an issue before?

Answer:External 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive only connects at USB 2.0 mode

In general, the first thing to try with any USB device that doesn't behave correctly (or at all) is to open Device Manager, find the device and uninstall it. If you don't currently have the device connected you may need to select 'show hidden devices' in Device Manager's 'View' menu.

If an inappropriate driver had been loaded the first time it was connected it will continue to be used on all subsequent times. Uninstalling it will make windows 'forget' and choose the driver from scratch.

Hi,I have an external USB Buffalo hard disk attached to my Lenovo E73 W7 Pro PC.If i boot with it connected then the PC won't boot through to Windows until i disconnect the Buffalo.I have been into the Bios and set the boot order to not only styart with the HD but also ignore USB and CD ROM.Interestingly before i changed the Bios it would stop the boot and when i disconnected the Buffalo i would get the option to go the bios; now that i have changed the bios although it still doesn't boot through to Windows, when i disconnect the Buffalo the Windows spalsh screen appears immediately. So..My thoughts are that the bios change has been a good thing and now there is a Windows option that needs to be changed to make it boot to Windows ignoring the Buffalo until it has started. Has anyone any advice please? Cheers,Simon

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

Just a generic question...
Does anyone know if the Buffalo WLA2-G54C is compatible with non Buffalo wireless routers? I have a Dlink router (don't know the model off the top of my head) with various brands of client adaptors. I've heard good things about the WLA2-G54C for the repeater function.
I ask this because of this statement on their website:
Repeater/Bridge function of the WLA2-G54C is supported only with Buffalo bridges and routers. But, the device can communicate with other manufacturer's 802.11b and 802.11g client adapters either in bridge/repeat mode or as a stand alone access point.
Does this mean that it simply won't work with other brand routers or that they just won't support it. I would think the latter but was curious if anyone had any experience with it.
Thanks!

I recently purchased a Buffalo 2tb usb3 external drive and a icy box usb3 pci card. (See 'New usb3 pci card not mounting usb3 external drive' in this forum for more details.)However, after installing the card in my pcie x1 slot it will let me read everything I put in it which is usb2. But it will not let me mount anything that is usb3.In small print on the Buffalo Manaul which I downloaded from their site, it states:'* A USB3.0 interface manufactured by Buffalo is required to use this drive at SS mode specified by USB 3.0 standard (logical transfer speed 5.0Gbps).'Surely they can't expect us to buy the Buffalo usb3 pci just to get this drive to work! Am sure lots of other people will go for a cheaper pci card that does the same job too. Also, I don't really want to purchase the Buffalo pci card and have the same trouble again as I did already.

I have it set to do WEP encryption with a pass key which is 13 characters long.. I am trying to get our Symbol MC9060 portable data terminals to attach to this. Basically this is a Pocket PC running Windows CE ver 4.0 which we will be using to scan bar codes. I can get it to see the router and get a signal but can't seem to get it to get past that. I will not let me ping anything on the network. I've isolated the problem as being authentication since I've tried the Symbol with my wireless LAN at home with absolutely no problems. My home router is a Linksys WRT54G which is wide open (no security). The Symbol will do these authentication methods and I've tried all to no avail,
None, Kerberos, LEAP, EAP-TLS and PEAP
As far as Encryption it will do Open System, WEP and TKIP (WPA) and I'm using (WEP) as I said before..

Does anyone know what type of authentication the buffalo AP uses? I'm unable to get it to talk to my Pocket PC..

Like I said the Pocket PC works fine on a home linksys with no security and I know they are designed to work with high end AP's like Symbol and Cisco

The buffalo will use whatever authentication you told it to use. Since you choose WEP it is just a sharred WEP key.

Hello,
I am a little crazy now.

I just updated from Anniversary to Creators via Windows Update.

Everything seem to be OK.

In my system I have TWO Windows 10.

The second is HIDE from the first (simply hidden letter).

I tried to launch the SECOND Windows 10 (still Anniversary) and... cannot boot.

So I went in the disk manager and... there is the partition, there is the label but... ZERO BYTE!!!

Please, tell me what I can do!!!

I cannot believe that CU destroyed the dual boot of my computer!!!

Answer:Windows 10 CU destroyed my second S.O.

Update:

I just discovered that the data is still there. Luck!

But, what is the easiest way to repair the dual boot? It is possible from Windows itself?

I find some command lines to do but they are related to MBR but I have a GPT disk.

Hi

Windows 10 has been good to from the start to the latest updates. First it wouldn't let me use my keyboard anymore, and yes it works on any other computer I have.
From yesterday until to day, it won't start anymore.

Windows 7, here I come again.
It is an old computer, about 7 years. But as them claimed, it should work on old computer to. This is really annoing. ...

Kindly a Winfan that is a little bit disappointed.....

Answer:Windows 10 destroyed my pc

Hi Peter
What will not start any more ? Computer ? W10 ? Keyboard ?
If KB, wired or wireless, did you try another port or plugging it in after windows start ?
If W10 would not start did you check disk for errors or bad sectors ?

Hello,

I recently, well I say recently but it was late 2011 I decided on building a new RIG, the final hardware change was my external HDD which I bought last week and a couple of days ago I connected and copied everything from my old HDD to the new one. It's insanely fast, USB3.0 is really fast. Although, coupled with Buffalo utilities it's even faster.

When I restarted my system after configuring everything in the Buffalo utilities I restarted and it was fine everything was working as it should be until I used my PC today and it booted really slow. In fact it was so slow I had to reboot it again and it was even slower than before. I disconnected the HDD and rebooted and it was there in a flash...? Okay, this is odd, I have come across this before with an external HDD but this is the first time that I've encountered a problem with USB3.0.

Scratching my head and coatie I pondered on what is potentially causing the problem, I then had a EUREKA moment. The Buffalo utilities use RAMDISK which is basically a virtual HDD which uses RAM. I delayed the boot of Buffalo Utilities and rebooted and it was fine. Whatever is causing the slow boot it's being caused by Buffalo. If I delay the loading of the software it's fine.

Anybody else experienced similar problems with Buffalo 2.0TB HD-LB2.0TU3-EU using Windows 7.

Answer:Bizarre Buffalo USB3.0 problem with Windows 7

Hello, I have the same problem, but found a solution.

Go on start button and search "run", press enter. Type in "msconfig" and press enter. Then go to the boot directory, click on advanced options and put away the hook at memory limit. Restart your system, now it should work... Don't know why that helped, but it helped :-D

Sorry for bad English, I'm german... Hope the English words of the directories are right...

Last week I booted up my laptop & was taken to a desktop page that was completely different. All of my shortcuts were gone. A message flashed by telling me that a "temporary" password had been created for me. It did not say what the password was. Then it was gone. The message also told me to contact my system administrator. I then made a terrible mistake. I went to This PC/Windows (C)/Users/Amador/Desktop and there were my shortcuts. I put my pictures, Open Office & ODT documents back on my desktop. I still could not go back to my regular desktop but was not too concerned. I also had not a trace of my Firefox program. I downloaded & reinstalled Firefox. My No Script Security Suite was also gone. I reinstalled No Script which requests a restart to enable the program. After I restarted my laptop everything was again gone from my desktop. My pictures & ODT documents were gone. Also, my HP One Drive Files are gone. I did run Hijack This & it would appear that most of my Win files are missing. I did not attempt to change or delete anything.

I downloaded my free upgrade and now my computer is stuck in a loop - blue screen/black screen. Tech support was useless. Why is Windows allowed to put out a product that does not work and we have to pay to repair? It would be so nice if someone started a class-action lawsuit against Microsoft regarding expenses consumers have had to incur due to their errors. I am sure people have spent millions paying to get their computers repaired after downloading corrupt Microsoft software. I don't remember ever being so angry about anything.

Answer:windows has destroyed my computer

It's not Microsoft's fault that you didn't make a backup. Why can't you just clean install your previous operating system?

Hey guys, first time poster here. Well here's the problem. I built my desktop about 3 months ago, with
AMD 64 3000+
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
3x 512MB RAM
GeForce 5700FX, and so on,
Anyways, I have been plagued with random reboots. I read what you guys have advised to do (turning off auto reboot) and I will try that. My problem is, this morning at college my computer worked very nicely. I carefully unplugged everything, put it in my car and securely strapped it in, drove it home. I plug everything back in again, and I run into a whole mess of problems. Windows loads sluggishly...and by that I mean, maybe about 5 minutes of waiting compared to the 20 or less seconds that it normally takes. Instead of the welcome screen I'm greeted with blackness, of which after a few more minutes of waiting, the computer stops sending a signal. I dont understand what could have changed, I mean, the memory is all accounted for, and the cpu is screwed in. Any advise is appreciated, I need to get this fixed by tomorrow. Thanks!

Windows 10 automatically downloaded to my new laptop in August and since it's essentially left it useless, bogging it down, logging me off the internet mid use, or shutting down all together.
I took it to a repair shop where I learned the download became permanent after 30 days, and there's no realistic way to remove the download without costing me more than what the laptops worth.
Why would someone like Microsoft create something that not only illegally stores your personal information, but isn't reversible on your own, or even by a repair shop.
My laptops a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series it was provided to me by the VA Voc Rehab program, I'm a disabled Vet having to return to College after suffering a TBI and loosing my career in medicine, and having to redo College all over again. The VA won't provide me with a new laptop, and it makes no sense to pay for the system to be wiped which would cost over $200, only to pay to have all the deleted content repurchased which would cost more than most laptops on the market.
Can anyone direct me to a Microsoft CSR so I can see if they'd be willing to remove the download and repair my system?

Answer:Windows 10 Has Destroyed My Laptop

I would strongly suggest you find yourself a new "repair shop" since those guys clearly aren't qualified to take care of your problems!
Originally, your Dell laptop shipped with a restore partition. The Windows 10 upgrade doesn't delete that partition and you still can use the built-in recovery function to restore your laptop to whatever was on there when you bought it. Check Dell's support website (or call them) for instructions on how to restore your laptop to factory condition. It usually involves a couple of key presses on startup in order to enter into recovery mode.
Naturally, I am assuming you didn't delete the recovery partition manually? And if you did, I hope you were smart enough to create yourself recovery media when you bought the device?
Either way, it is doubtful that Windows 10 "destroyed" your laptop. After all, it doesn't just install itself and it takes quite a bit involvement of the user to get it finally installed. I also believe that your problems are easily fixable since it sounds like you're missing some drivers. A clean install of Windows 10 will probably fix most of your problems.

My work laptop used to dual-boot between XP and 7 (XP was the first partition, 7 the second). Today, I decided that I no longer had any need for XP, and wiped the partition, then moved the 7 partition and grew it so that it took up the entire drive. Now I am told that I no longer have a bootable partition on my system when I try to bring it up. I have tried messing around with the boot record restore tools on the Windows 7 DVD, but I have not had any luck. Do you guys have any ideas of anything else I could try?

TIA.

So I installed a critical Windows Update and now what I formerly used as my gaming PC acts as if it was built in 2005. Specifically, everything has dratically slowed down: it takes about 2 minutes to boot, my Windows Index rating dropped from 6.2 to 3.3, and worst of all, games which I've run on highest settings up to 121 fps have dropped to 23 fps. I've tried a system restore, making sure my drivers were up date, a full system malware scan, and even freed up 25 GB on my hard drive, so does anyone have any idea what to do?

Answer:Windows Update destroyed my PC

Just do a system restore back to before the update and after your done go to windows update and when it shows this update again choose to hide it permanently.

Hi I have a real bad issue is there anyone out there fancy helping pls.I have been given 3 desktops since mine overheated - I have put all the best bits from the computers together to make a half decent one. I could only get 1 hard drive to work in this system XP(I have 6 - 2 of which should be o.k) the rest just don't seem to work BUT I got all running on the one and it was massively infected with viruses,trojans,backdoor,security-hijackers all in all about 520. I managed to install and run Malewarebytes, AVG, Superantispyware and ATFcleaner, when all viruses were removed and i saved the mbamlog on the desktop - AVG pulled msls52.dll which was a system file - I was cautious and sent it to AVG research who sent an email saying it was definatley a virus, so I rebooted and now Explorer doesn't show taskbar, icons and any program i run from taskmanager - the only thing that works - i get constant errors telling me no msls52.dll file is missing please re-install. I need help with this one please!!

I'm not sure this is the right forum. Microsoft has the worst customer feedback site. Here goes....Recently, I purchased a Dell Laptop with Windows 10 on it. I should I have waited and found another brand with Windows 8 still on it. Last week, as I was out of the room, Windows Anniversary Updates were installed on my system. When I returned and looked at my screen, I got a message essentially telling me that my desktop was destroyed. I did the natural thing and found a back door into Control Panel and used system restore. It worked the first time, but unfortunately, after installing a program, which required a restart, Windows hit me with updates again. It took twelve hours. It was an honest mistake, but, thanks to Windows corrupt program, this last restart move proved disasterous. This time when I attempted restore and waited ten hours, I lost my desktop completely. I don't know if a technician can fix this. I'm really angry with Microsoft. Though I have most of my files (some of them, such as Word, corrupted), retrieved after some wrangling, I have no idea what can be dne to retrieve or replace my desktop short of a miracle or clean copy of Windows (which would wipe my laptop clean). Microsoft customer feedback line is a joke. At least, I could say a few words here.

---- Thanks, Wordspinner

I, like many others, had Windows 10 installed automatically when I wasn't home. I'm not necessarily opposed to this except that it has OBLITERATED my battery life. As an ultrabook user, I primarily own my Lenovo T431s because it can last me days at a time, or at least one day of heavy usage (8+ hours). However, I noticed that since Windows 10 was introduced my usage time is not nearly the same. Just listening to music will result in 1-2 hours at best, even with dim settings. I have to count the minutes every time I take my laptop off the charger.
I've read that MS is working on optimizing performance, but this is beyond optimization -- something must be actively draining the machine. Any thoughts?

Hello oobio

Welcome to tenForums!

To investigate your battery usage please have a look at the following tutorial and work through the steps:

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3...dows-10-a.html

Then you should also run the power efficiency report:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5...dows-10-a.html

Looking through these reports will help you identify at what times in the day the battery was drained the most, hopefully you can relate it to what you were doing. You may also find there are a number of settings you can tweak to improve battery performance based on the analysis.

Hello.

I own a Toshiba Satellite laptop model: P850 part number: PSPKFV-00H002AR bought from United Arab Emirates.
OS: Windows 8 x64 pre installed/factory installed.

It does not have 3D screen capabilities.
It does not have Blu ray.
It has fingerprint scanner.

Since I have started to use it I am having major problems with its OS, drivers, and Toshiba utilities.
*I will post the MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEMS I am having so that I can get help easier.*

In the beginning the laptop felt great, utilities worked as they should. the only thing that was failing from time to time was the ECO button but not a big deal. *Toshiba HDD accelerator was working flawlessly.*

First thing I did when I started using my laptop was getting familiar with the OS, and of course creating a secondary partition for my stuff (files and so on)

I used a *free* 3rd party software called:
*Mini tool partition wizard* which proved to be very good.
http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmanager/windows-8-partition-manager.html
( no advertising intended , its a free program and very useful)

Before doing any of the operations I did a deep research of how windows 8 partitions and recovery work so that I don't accidentally render them useless.

**First thing I did was Creating 3 DVD disks using "Toshiba Recovery Media Creator"*

*Then using the above mentioned software (partition wizard) I created a second partition by taking space from the C partition.*

Hi,I have win7 Enterprise -64bits-latest BIOS (2.54) in a Thinkpad X1 carbon.. for the 3rd time, at startup, the chkdsk suggested to run and when it did, it deleted tons of files!! consequently,  entire desktop environment got destroyed, programs won't run, the background image returned to a default, the network adapter won't be recognized, and worst of all, I can't restore to any latest point since win7 believes it has the latest valid configuration, complete disaster.Has this happened to anybody?

Answer:startup CHKDSK destroyed my windows 7

When the OS suggests running chkdsk, it means that a corruption was sensed. You have either a bad hard drive, or a software problem that caused the corruption.

I never use hibernation; typically I use sleep, but last night I happened to click on hibernate instead and when I tried to power the machine back on, it came up with the Resume Loader with the message "Your system's firmware did not preserve the system memory map across hibernation" and asked if I wanted to boot anyway.

I chose to boot anyway and now my system is in an endless reboot loop. The machine gets past the BIOS and I see the blinking cursor for about a second and then the whole system reboots. I have Win7 installed in UEFI mode and the BIOS is configured to load the Windows UEFI bootloader.

Things I've tried to remedy the issue, but to no avail:

Clear CMOS
Remove the power for several hours
Use the boot drive as an external to delete the hiberfil.sys (doesn't exist on the drive)
Tried mashing F8 and spacebar to see if I can get Advanced Boot Options

The only thing left to try is boot a Windows 7 disc and see if startup repair can do anything. Anyone ever experience something like this?

Answer:Windows 7: Hibernation destroyed my installation?

Startup repair usually fixes it. I had to disable hibernation on my machine because it would do it nearly every time... Had to do Startup Repair every time. It'd fix it, though.

Now, it's either sleep or shutdown.

First off I have nothing against the software mnf, I just wanted to uninstall Filmora demo. I proceeded and noticed it left some files which is normal, a lot of software does that. Problems arose when I went for a routine system restore on my new SSD. It said unable to extract a certain file....but I had uninstalled Filmora, why would it be saying this?? Thought it was a reg error maybe with CC cleaner. I doubt it now. Tried reinstalling, but no go. So I reinstalled my HDD that I used to mirror to my SSD thinking this can't be happening. I went to earliest restore point which was the day of the Filmora install coincidentally?? I don't remember honestly deleting all restore points before that; proceeded to sys.restore then the worst happened. On reboot windows stops booting and tells somethings wrong and I need to insert the repair disc...I'm fuked. No disc either and a working mirror on SSD that is tainted with the same remnants that killed my Win7 OS on my HDD.

I did nothing jazzy to cause this and it isn't coincidence that both drives are screwed on a system restore to a point before the Filmora install. That software is evil. Any work around without a repair disk?

Hi all. I recently got the window's recovery virus on my computer. I wasn't aware of this virus, so I ran the "recovery" program as requested. I then noticed that something didn't seem right, so I restarted the computer. When I restarted I simply had a black screen and no programs other than recycle bin on my desktop. I ran Malware Bytes and rKill and then a system restore on the machine. I now have all my functionality back, but whenever I start the computer it tells me that there is a problem with the HP Advisor program as it's running under the same account name already. Also, all my files are gone, and whenever I try to download a new file, the downloaded file disapears off my machine. I have to manually search for it and then drag it onto my desktop. All documents, music, pictures and other items are missing. Please help.

Hi all
I have a DELL Inspiron laptop (17R 5737) which was originally running Windows 8 (and later 8.1) with all updates installed.
I tried upgrading to Windows 10 and I had a few installation errors but on the 6th try it worked because I chose not to keep my settings and apps. At first after the initial installation, Windows 10 was working well and I spent some time downloading apps, checking out Edge and talking to Cortana but then I hibernated and the next day I tried turning my laptop on and for no reason whatsoever it threw me to the "Automatic repair" menu and then got stuck in a repair boot loop. From there I tried all the obvious choices, to restart a few times, to restore to an earlier image which it couldn't find, to boot to safe mode which didn't work, etc. I couldn't do anything at all. I tried resetting a few times (cleaning all settings and apps) but that also failed. I then saw that every time it tried a recovery it created a new partition on my drive called "Recovery partition". When I noticed that, it had already been a few hours of me trying all logical solutions and it had created 8 recovery partitions and my drive must have run out of space because it would no longer even start. It would immediately throw me on a blue screen showing hard drive errors. After hours of trying every alternative option, my laptop was completely DESTROYED and the only real option to get my laptop doing anything at all was to format it and install Linux fr... Read more

OK, here's the problem:
1) I have Verizon DSL, and it used to be able to handle up to 2 computers wired and 2 computers wireless running Firefox and messaging programs simultaneously without a sweat. The only time the bandwith was restricted a little bit was when someone was on the VOIP line, as well as the above situation happening. However, nowadays, on this computer, I can only run Firefox OR AIM on the internet, and when I try to run both, neither work. When this first started happening, I was still able to play games such as CoD2 and CS:CZ, but eventually my ping would skyrocket and I'd lag out each and every time. Now, I'm afraid to even open CoD2/CS:CZ online, and I'm lucky if I can go half an hour on AIM (without Firefox even open) without having to sign out and back in just to reconnect.
2) When double clicking on My Computer, I get a Windows Explorer box with a flashlight looking for a folder for up to 5 minutes straight before I can see my drives. This lag also happens in programs, such as iTunes, when I try to look at drives/folders/files.

I upgraded to the free win10 from win8, and it ran ok for several months now. Last week Microsoft did an automatic upgrade, and afterwards it went to a black screen with an upgrade circle at the bottom, and it stayed stuck there (I left it on all night!). I tried rebooting several times, but it stayed stuck. Finally I rebooted into the system menu and did a system restore. That put it back into win8! I tried to get my backup recovery software to work, but I was having trouble so I rebooted a couple more times, and then it went into a recovery mode and said the system was unrecoverable! I am now trying to create a bootable USB drive so I can load the recovery software, but I haven't figured that out yet. Where do I get these ISO files? Do I have to buy them from Microsoft?! Is there a simple way to make a USB drive I can at least load the recovery software onto so I can run it? My system is a Lenovo Z580 laptop.

Last Friday, I received my alert about my Notebook PC (previously running Windows 8.1, that I just purchased in November and had yet to actually use much because it was bought to be a school-PC for me to use for college) was ready to upgrade for free to Windows 10. I followed the command prompts and by the time I had to go out on Friday afternoon - my installation was 12% complete (my dad too did the installation on his PC and it went smoothly and was already fully upgraded at this point). I came home a few hours later and my PC was rebooting on a loop. It would show the ASUS screen, flicker through another screen, turn a lighter shade of black, state that it was restoring my previous version of windows, shut down completely and then the whole process would repeat again. I left it alone Friday and Saturday and finally called Windows today when it was still repeating on a loop. Windows support tried to help but I was unable to access safe mode. I didn't feel secure with trying to fix the OS myself so my dad took it into Staples. Staples told my father that the Windows 10 "upgrade" completely destroyed my computer. It no longer has an OS at all. It's just an empty box.

Staples reminded us that we had purchased extended warranty and said that the warranty people would send us a coupon to come back and get a free replacement from the store if we called them. My dad spoke with the warranty people and was told that they do NOT cover issues like this at all. So not only ... Read more

Answer:Windows 10 Free Upgrade DESTROYED my brand new Notebook PC

Send your destroyed computer to me, I'll "dispose" of it properly for you! I'll bet you didn't create the ASUS restore media from the factory installed OS, did you? There are plenty of ways to install an OS on the computer.

Call ASUS and beg them to send you the factory restore media for the computer and they might do so for free - otherwise you will have to buy it because you did not make it from the factory installed OS before trying to upgrade.

Someone that knows what they are doing could have that computer up and running on an OEM version of the Windows that it came with in about 2 hours.

Hi all,

last Friday I tried running Windows' own Disk Cleanup tool in order to purge a huge amount of temporary files from the system. The cleanup task somehow managed to destroy the OS loader in the process and rendered my system unable to boot. Now when booting Windows tries to run Startup Repair, which never succeeds. The problem details are as follows:

Code:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairSoftware
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 03: unknown
Problem Signature 04: 43
Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover
Problem Signature 06: 1
Problem Signature 07: MissingOsLoader
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033
and the repair details include the root cause:

Code:
Boot manager failed to find OS loader.

Repair action: File repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0xa

Repair action: Boot configuration data store repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x2
I have scoured through the web for help, but with little success. None of the solutions that have worked for other people are helping me. What I've tried includes:

* restoring the system from a restore point (fails with "incorrect parameter" regardless of the hardware configuration)
* restoring the system from a system image (also fails)
* running the automated startup repair multiple times consecutively both from system drive and from a USB boot drive (nothing changes, the repair is always unable to fix the system)
* fixing the MBR and boot secto... Read more

Windows 7 upgrade advisor reports that I have "BUFFALO TurboPC EX Series" on my Windows 7 PC. It won't let me upgrade until it is removed. I can't find it anywhere. Any ideas? I can't get past it.

I've tried to locate it using:
Revo Uninstaller
Glary Utilities
System Tray Cleaner
FreeFixer
System Explorer

But can't find it. It's not listed in my Task Manager, either.

FWIW, here's some info on the offending software:
BUFFALO TurboCopy - Should I Remove It?

and

What is UN091201.EXE?

Any ideas? I can't get past it. TIA!

Answer:Can't get past "BUFFALO TurboPC EX Series" on my Windows 7 PC

Pure speculation: in past Windows upgrades, the installer has detected a residual from a program that has been uninstalled.

The fix would be manually deleting Registry settings, but it'd be good to know exactly which ones.

Just bought the buffalo wzr-600dhp router using dd-wrt open source software.

I needed a router I could control bandwidth with with a good QOS feature pack.
QOS kinda works out of the box on this router but setting limits by IP or MAC seems broken.
Cap only works by setting the uplink speed and that is what it stops at.
Just wondering if anyone else has this router and has gotted QOS to work properly?

Also had a hell of a time getting it to work with my isp and DNS apparently these 3 boxes under setup had to be unchecked to get things to work.

Well I'm getting some strange results...Especially since my old Netgear Bridge is pretty much broken (it won't connect to anything).

First Test I did was Placed the Buffalo router in place of my netgear Router and checked the signal on my wireless USB dongle. It stayed the same. I proceeded to Boost the Signal in DD-WRT using Xmit Power I boosted it from 28 to 100, the signal to the card did not budge...So much for having High signal strength compared to my 3 year old wireless G netgear, or this hack to increase the signal. So far, wasted money.

Now Since my bridge (netgear could still not connect (it can only detect networks, but not connect to them as of last weekend wtf!) It was time to put the router back in place and try the Buffalo as a Bridge.

I placed both routers next to each other; they are roughly 25-30 feet from my Main Router. I enabled the Client Bridge on the Buffalo MIMO Router.

Both Routers had about the same signal I'm getting about 48-60% at this range (Pretty terrible!) DD-WRT However also tells me the signal quality as well which is POOR about 35-39%

Next test was to scan for other local networks. The netgear is picking up all kinds of stuff, between 4 and 7 networks! Some of which appear to have a stronger signal than my own router not more than 30 feet away (say 35%, 40% 65% and 70-99%)
The Buffalo router only picks up 2-3 networks at a time, not always event he ones that are appearing as 99%, which also have str... Read more

Answer:Got my New Buffalo WHT-HP-G54 :(

I guess you installed SP2? I never saw any difference with SP2 set to more than 10mw. Only SP1 seems to register changes to the xmit. That's why I stuck with it despite some other improvements in SP2.

Once you get SP1 working, set it to 80mw-100mw and swap it with your landlord's router. Then put your older router back bridge mode. That should be the best combination if you just ordered one. Before you disconnect the landlord's router, be sure to login to release its DHCP connection.

you gotta use TFTP. I'd suggest tomato. It is a lot easier to install onto the router. I installed tomato on my WHR-HP-54G with the downloaded software that you just double click and it automaticly uploads to the router.

The instructions on Wikipedia have me mightily confused.

This router is causing me some grief with the wireless setup, as although I'm getting a respectable signal strength, the internet just keeps dropping out for some reason. I'm hoping the firmware upgrade will help.

However, it seems you need a degree in Nuclear Astrophysics to be able to do it. Is there a simpler way?

Doesn't look like you need a degree; looks like u need timing.

If it's not a video CD, but a data CD then typically you just load the video file(s) in a player. Or if you have a player associated with video file types, just double click on a video file after opening the drive in Explorer.

I got the thing today, but the software (router configuration wizard) won't run on Win 7 (Build 7000). Incompatible OS it says.

Options?

Thanks again.

Hi, I have recently installed Windows 7 on an old Dell PC which works fine. The original OS being XP. It doesn't have a wireless card installed on it. Hello Everybody.
This is the problem i'm facing with a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 access point and a switch.
I wanna use the Buffalo as router. I'm connecting the Buffalo Wan port to the DSL modem and one of his lan ports to a PC. Everything is working fine and connection is up.

If i connect the second port of the Buffalo to a switch connected with 6 other PC, the link led on the Buffalo blinks (showing no correct connection) and the led on the switch doesn't light up.
Same thing happens if i connect the second port of the Buffalo directly to another PC network card. On the network card the link led doesn't light up and on the Buffalo the led blinks.

Which is the mistake ?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hello Major Members,

I have a Buffalo NAS (LS-V2.0tl) that appears to be working via a shared drive, but doesn't seem to work as a bit torrent drive. It has a steady red continuous light on that I'm unable to fix. Originally, I would just play with the function key because it was blinking in intervals of three. The only thing that happened while playing with the function key is that it is now a steady red light.

Once upon a time, I remember that there was a software fix for this but have seen it since.

Any ideas or assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does anyone know of a nice NAS with upgradeable disks with decent performance that supports FTP, DLNA, BitTorrent, rack-mount would be nice, as would a web server but neither of these are deal-breakers/essential, oh, and support for a different RAID level (to be recommended here) RAID 5 maybe??

Unfortunately, we're clean out of our WHR-HP-G54s and are looking for a comparable replacement.

We used to stock the Linksys WRT54G's but had some issues with them failing at client's and haven't been overly impressed.

The buffalo's have been rock solid, we've sold 100s of them without a single failure.

I don't mind going back to Linksys if that's the way to go, but I'm not afraid to try something different.

It needs to be able to handle DDWRT or Tomato and needs to cost less than $75 shipped as anything more expensive isn't marketable. I buy these in quantity so telling me to get an older version of WRT54G isn't going to happen.

Thanks!

Morning,I've got the above wireless router which has worked well up until last sunday, I got round the problem and then it happened again on Tuesday. The problem im having is that the computer using the buffalo adapter is struggling to recquire a network address and my wireless laptop won't log on with the correct SSID and AES key.I've used AOSS to setup the network, which works really well. To get round the problem I was having I cancelled AOSS, unplugged everything and deleted any profiles for that connection, re-plugged in everything and started AOSS from the router and the buffalo adapter, this set up another secure wireless network automatically. This worked a treat for two days then it happened again.Does anybody know why this is happening or can help me stop it from happening. Its pretty easy to restart the AOSS, its just annoying that I need to keep doing it. Its stopping others in the house from using the net while im out or away as im the only 1 who knows what to do.My PC wired to the router works fine all the time so im guessing that the router is changing some wifi settings itself . Maybe I might be better binning AOSS and setting up the wireless side manually. Thanks for any help

So I ordered the Buffalo router recommended on the "help me pick a router" thread and am awaiting its arrival. I have been doing a little reading over at the DD-WRT site and also searched for the latest build for this router. The router itself is not listed. There is some talk about instabilities and shortcomings with the current DD-WRT builds on their forum.
My question is this. What version shall I upgrade to upon receiving the router? Or, should I just try it out with the factory installed DD-WRT and see what happens? What have you all done with this router?
Any feedback is appreciated. My plan is to get it set up quickly, minimizing down time as wife is minimally tolerant of that sort of thing! I don't want to hear any "It worked fine before, why did you need to upgrade?"
Thanks,
Pat

Well after looking at the site your best bet would be the most recent firmware released 4/03/12 from buffalo, as it does not appear that dd-wrt has any firmware on their site.
Here is the ftp, you can also find the link via the buffalo site here.

Good luck as from what I have read this is a very flaky with dd-wrt. I hope the issues have been resolved in the newest firmware.
