infuriating bluetooth connection problem

Question: infuriating bluetooth connection problem

So, this is now driving me absolutely insane, and I couldn't have better chances for success (or so I think).
I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad W530 (Windows 8), and I have a Lumia 920 (Windows Phone 8). Seems pretty darn compatible, right?
Well my issue is simply "They will not connect or cooperate well"

Let me first say that through a blurry mashing of key presses and strange settings windows I have gotten the two to connect before for music control. But only twice.

The issue I have is apparently on both the phone and the computer-
When I tap connect on the phone, it stays connected for a few seconds, then disconnects.
When I try and connect on the laptop, it won't connect at all.
When I try and open the bluetooth device window, it stay open for a couple seconds and then closes.
Sometimes the music controller window appears, then disappears.

My phone doesn't appear to have anything wrong with it, I have restarted the phone completely with no effect.
The computer is under a month old with no driver issues or hardware issues, so it can't be that either.
What on earth am I doing wrong here? Why doesn't Windows (8) (and I hate saying this) have an efficient bluetooth connection service like Mac? connecting my phone to a Mac easier than easy. On windows it's nearly asking me to remove my hair strand by strand.

Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: infuriating bluetooth connection problem

When you say bluetooth connection, are you saying bluetooth headset or are you saying a bluetooth network connection between your phone and your laptop?

I have a wireless network set up in my house. My desktop runs a wireless connection. For the last month I've been having a perfectly fine internet connection; 18mb download, 3mb upload, with a 50 ms ping. For the last few days however it has been <1mb download, .2-4.0 mb upload, and a 1024 ms ping. This makes no sense. There haven't been any changes to the network and if I reset my modem for about a ten second window I get the original speeds that I have had. After that window though my internet goes down to the crappy numbers I have now. On top of all of this my connection to the router is at 4/5 bars, with a ping to my router being less that 1 ms. Please help.

My keyboard won't stay connected to the Bluetooth. Windows disabled the Bluetooth and gave this messge: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)." What is this and how do I fix it? I can't get my Logitech K810 keybaord to stay connected. It pairs, and works for awhile, then disconnests, even though it says it is connected. Driver update says the drivers in place are the right ones. I've also tried Bluetooth dongles to connect with, but I get the same problem -- connects for a while and then disconnects.

Hello, this is my first post here and I hope i've created it in the correct part of the forum, if i've not and your a mod please feel free to move it.

Ok, the problem, I bought a "Nvidea Gainward 9600 GT PCX 2 Golden Sample 512mb" Graphics Card which has 2 DVI out ports on the back of it, I have 2 working DVI to DVI cables and i now have 2 identical "Acer V223W LCD" Monitors. So being someone naive i connect the cables with the monitors and graphics card and turn my system on and go to "Control Panel > Display > Screen Resolution" and hit Detect quite happily thinking that was all there was too it....

My Primary screen 1 is coming up in the Display dropdown as it should: "1. Acer V223W" yet my secondary display would not appear at all. I attempted to use my Nvidea Control Panel to no avail, I updated all my drivers and still nothing.

Thinking that there maybe a physical problem i swap everything around and sure enough both monitors and cables work, but only if they are in the top (Primary) DVI port on the graphics card, so thinking there may be a problem with the lower (secondary) DVI port and wanting to try everything, I, in a moment of madness, plugged in a DVI to VGA adapter and connected the 2nd monitor with a VGA cable and hey presto, dual monitors!!

The problem i have is one, why the hell isnt windows 7s recognising my 2nd monitor unless its plugged in with a VGA cable and even then still not correctly recognising it (i... Read more

Answer:Please Help: Infuriating Problem

Why do you jump to the conclusion that it is W7's fault that the second monitor isn't being detected. If I understood what you said, there is output on one video card connector, but not the other. Sounds to me that it is a defective video card. Do you have known good card that you could swap out for a check?

Last week I had to very quickly transfer some files from a dying laptop hard drive to my desktop PC via network onto shared folder. All went well and all the files transferred fine into the shared folder and I checked a few to make sure all was OK. In the nick of time it transpired, as laptop drive self destructed half an hour later. However, now when I try to access the files I transferred to the shared folder on desktop they are invisible and I can't work out how to access them.

When I open the shared folder it's empty, nothing to be seen. Have set all hidden folders/files to be visible and have used the search function all to no avail, but when I click on properties it shows me that all the sub folders and files that I transferred are there, I just can't see them. Where on earth are they? I regard myself as reasonably computer savvy, but this one has got me beat.

Would appreciate any help at all as this is driving me up the wall - the files are there (somewhere) how do I get at them.

Best Regards, Macca

Answer:Infuriating problem

Try searching the folder where the files are supposed to be for * (its a wildcard) and see if anything turns up. Also, go into the folder and does it say in the status bar that there are files in the folder?

I'm using an ethernet bridge thing to connect to my Verizon 9100EM router, and it's called a slinglink turbo. I connect my computer to it, which connects to the wall plug, and in my office there is another slinglink turbo connected to the wall, and that connects to the router.

I've never really had problems with this setup but recently it has just conked out and every day after 12 pm and at night it stops working. I try the windows troubleshooter and it can't find out the problem. I know there is something wrong with my computer settings probably because when I connect my computer directly to the router it works fine. Also the setup works fine with devices other than my computer.
In addition, in the network and sharing center the LAN connection is listed as "unidentified network".

Here is the ipconfig when connected directly to the router, and after that is the normal connection setup when it has stopped working. I know it looks very similar and I'm confused about it.

Answer:Infuriating problem with ethernet

By "slinglink turbo" are you referring to a SlingLink TURBO? If so, that appears to be a powerline adapter. Although SlingLink says just "plug into a wall" you really have to plug the units into the electrical system and, hence, whether it works and how well it works depends on the quality of the system and what else is plugged in. With powerline adapters "it has just conked out and every day after 12 pm and at night it stops working" would imply that about noon and at night something is plugged in or turned on that interferes with them. Or maybe it is two somethings--one at noon and the other at night.

I have this maddening problem with IE: I'll be surfing along without problems for a while, until I have, say, a 15-20 page group - then when I click a link to open a new page, nothing happens, and I can't see the group list by clicking the taskbar either. So I'll close the page on screen, which allows me to view the group list again and its individual pages - but only temporarily, since not only can I not add any new pages to the group, the remaining ones must soon be closed one-by-one also.

I'd be grateful for any help with this lunacy.

Hi all. I'm the reluctant 'computer guy' at our small firm and I am currently creating and maintaining some basic web pages for our site. Most are simple html pages created or edited in dreamweaver but with .asp extensions as the original site has most of its pages protected by a login and this is the way the original webmaster built it.

I've noticed a really odd recurring problem lately. Sometimes I get an old version (like, a week old) of our pages, and any newly uploaded pages return a 404.

The ftp side of things has been tested and is functioning correctly. I can access the site just fine from other machines on the LAN.

Something appears to be caching our site within my PC, and is delivering me an old version of the site (like, a week or more old) whenever it feels that way inclined. When the problem happens I'll see the old version of edited pages, be unable to load any of my 'new' pages, and the problem will continue for maybe several minutes to an hour or so. A forced refresh makes no difference, nor does using Firefox or IE. Then it will go away, I'll be able to load the full site and see the modified pages, no problems. Until next time.

I've cleared 'recent history' and 'offline storage' in Firefox, 'browsing history' in IE8 and the 'Offline Web Pages' and 'Temp' folders in C:\WINDOWS on my machine and it doesn't change anything. Also, it doesn't expla... Read more

LIKE PLZ [email protected]?!?! Now that's out of my system..

I have quite possibly a unique issue, involving the black screen. Now I know the root cause, a naffed gfx driver update from nividia but do not know how to solve it. First about my system:

I'm running windows 8.1, updated to 3 weeks ago (last time I could access my win partition).

I use full disk encryption, truecrypt. My truecrypt rescue disk appears to be corrupted.

I dual boot between linux mint 17 and windows.
I've been able to access the ?safe mode? menu by continuously cycling the power but unable to do much with it, as anything relating to the windows partition/file system returns an error ?hard disk locked? .

I'm unable to permanently decrypt the drive as the rescue disk doesn't wish to work/boot ? yes I've made numerous copies but I think somehow the original ISO got corrupted.

Windows boots ?fine?, meaning that it will boot up to what I think is the login screen but will only display the black screen and mouse cursor. I keep no system restore points.

My question is how to do I remove/roll back the graphics driver? I've tried an endless amount of stuff found via googling but as of yet none of it has worked.

Any and all suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

Answer:An interesting and infuriating problem

I think in this case you're basically screwed. Without a functioning rescue disc for TrueCrypt, your only option other than formatting and reinstalling would be to try brute force cracking the encryption which would probably take years, decades, maybe even lifetimes with current technology.

I'd say let this be a lesson and next time, if you use TrueCrypt again, make sure the rescue disc works straight away. We've all been where you are, so don't feel too bad, just learn from your mistakes.

Alright... this is starting to get expensive.

I had a set of Altec Lansing speakers that kicked, but only played the left channel through both (and sub) speakers. I had an old Sounblaster Live sound card purchased used off eBay that I always suspected was the culprit, that I just replaced with a new Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme sound card. At the same time I ordered a brand new Altec Lansing Soundbar speaker set for under my monitor.

After all that... there's STILL no right channel!!! What on earth is the problem???

Any and all potential solutions are welcome.

I've read all I can about this online, and tried everything I've come across. Since upgrading my internet (same ISP) the upload on my computer (not any others on the network).

It ranges from 0.2 megabits to 1. If I boot into linux I get 3, but that's far from the 8 megabits the other computers on the network get.

But the strange thing is, the problem seems to affect only certain programs. My browsers are affected as the internet tests I do are from the browser. OBS (streaming software) will not upload more then 0.2 megabits (about 20k). However utorrent can completely max out my upload.

I've tried stopping the WMI service and I have no traffic shaping software installed.

So my bluetooth adapter should be here tomorrow, and i decided to make sure it was easy enough to hook up to windows on my macbook pro running windows 7 64 bit. it sees the headset, but says ' no drivers available'.

if i reboot the macbook into OS X, bluetooth works flawlessly and I can stream audio from the computer to the headset. its windows I'm having a problem with, and afraid I will have the same problem in Windows 10, which is what I am running on my desktop.

is there a Windows driver for the LG HBS-730 headset?

I want to stream game audio from the computer to the headset. Kind of sucks having to have Arkham City on super low volume, or wearing huge clunky headphones popular with WoW back in 2008.

Answer:LG HBS-730 bluetooth connection problem

Have you tried running the bluetooth adapter on a true Windows7 machine? Apps with drivers built for Win7 don't always work properly on Mac OS in boot camp or emulation mode.

Does the bluetooth adapter spec state that it's compatible with Mac OSX as well as Win7??

My apologies if this isn't the correct thread for this post. In my opinion Bluetooth falls in the networking niche. Please move it to the appropriate thread if not. Thanks!

First off I want to thank you for any help you may provide and for this wonderfull website! This is my first post here as I am pretty tech savvy and don’t usually find myself in the position where I need to ask for help. With that being said I will get to the point of this post.

I recently bought a cell, a T-Mobile Sparq to be completely accurate, and tried to connect it to my laptop via Bluetooth. My laptop is an Asus G75VW which comes with BT capabilities. When I run the BT suite and click “Add a Device” it sits at the “Searching for a device.. Make sure your device is discoverable.” Prompt for as long as I let it without discovering my phone. I made sure my phone’s BT is active and discoverable. My next step was to go into my Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Component Services> Services (Local) to make sure BT and its dependencies where active, which they were. I updated all my related drivers and when that didn’t work I un-installed and re-installed them, to no avail. I checked my device manager to make sure there were no conflicts there and found nothing. I then spent a few hours on Google troubleshooting and was not able to find anything that I had not already tried. That’s when I decided to drop this problem onto the genius minds of the Tech-Guy forums for if they can’t so... Read more

I have a Dell studio 15 with Windows 7 and Bluetooth. I am trying to install Manhattan 2800 Bluetooth bookshelf speakers. They sometimes play but disconnect intermittently. When Bluetooth disconnects I have to completely shut down and start over. (I haven't been able to fix it with just Restart.)

Here is a clue:
In "devices and Printers" it shows the laptop as a device:
Studio 15 [properties]

Selecting: [Bluetooth L2CAP Interface] -- properties/General
"Device status
Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"

Selecting: [Bluetooth Hands free audio] -- properties
Driver= Broadcom Corp, 7/1/2009,
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware compatibility Publisher.

The speaker documentation indicates Bluetooth v1.2, class 2 and A2DP protocol support

The Bluetooth icon on the bar at the bottom of the desktop disappears when the connection breaks while looking at properties.

This might be related -- I also have a Kensington Bluetooth trackball mouse that has intermittent problems with connecting at start-up. When the mouse doesn't work at start-up, I can usually make it work by removing its batteries and putting them back.

Advice will be appreciated,
Stan Hilliard

I have made sure the bluetooth in the laptop is on and checked the settings to enable it to be found and connected to, yet it cannot find either of the two mobiles I have tried to pair with it. Both the phones can find the laptop however, but the bluetooth connection fails. I've downloaded and installed the latest bluetooth driver from the Lenovo website. What else can I do? Is the problem the laptop, bluetooth, windows 7 or what?

Answer:X121e bluetooth connection problem

You need to install following drivers first
1. Hotkey Drivers
2. Access Connection
After installation restart the system , Turn on the Wlan Radio Button , after windows is logged in Press Fn + F5 button to verify the Bluetooth and Wlan status .
Then Make your computer discoverable , so that it can be accessed by other devices
Hope This Helps

When using cortana on my band 2 it always comes up as turn on blue tooth or make sure its connected. I just recently decided to switch to the Microsoft platform because I could use cortana with my voice and band 2. I went through hell and back trying to convert my android info into the Microsoft eco system. I don't know why im so determined and stubborn to keep trying with Microsoft. Your products on paper seem so superior but in reality are sub par. The only reason I switched to a microsoft phone was the voice connectivity with cortana. What I found is that the band worked better with android as well as all the other apps that are cross functional. Why on earth does a Microsoft product have so many issues talking with its own brand. I think i'm returning the phone and possibly even the band, even after returning to the store 5 times and wasting so much of my time. I'm disappointed Microsoft, yet will probably still keep trying your products, why why why./

I started having a similar issue when I installed the latest Wifi/BT driver.  Even after I rolled back to the older driver, something had changed. I no longer am able to use my BT Creative D100 speakers as it causes my BT mouse to act up (similar symptoms you are having; but my mouse never stabilized). In addition, my USB3 Ethernet adapter no longer automatically switches back to Wifi when I unplug it (I have to manually reconnect to my wireless router). I very much regret installing the new drivers.  Before that, my Yoga 13 was very solid/stable.

Hi Satellite users,

I recently had a problem getting my Toshiba Satellite P50t-B running Windows 10 to detect (and hence connect) to my Sony MDR-XB50BS Bluetooth Headphones. The symptom of the problem was that the "MDR-XB50BS" device didn't appear in the list of available devices on the Windows Activity Centre "Connect" screen, nor in the Windows Settings -> Devices -> Bluetooth and other devices -> Add a device screen. Since the device never appeared, I couldn't connect to it.

The solution to the problem turned out to be upgrading my Toshiba Satellite BIOS from version 1.10 to BIOS version 1:50 available on the Drivers & Updates tab of the Toshiba Satellite Support site. The release notes mention a Bluetooth issue being corrected in version 1.40 and while I can't say for certain that this is the same issue I encountered, updating the BIOS was the last thing that I tried before the problem went away, and it's reasonable to expect that a relatively new technology like Bluetooth might have had early implementation bugs.

The other point to note is that if you've already paired the headphones with another device, like I had with my iPhone, then you have to hold the power button down for 7 seconds at power on in order to enter Bluetooth pairing mode first time you try to connect it to the Satellite.

I hope this helps someone someday!

I really had not this 'Bluetooth connection' before.
But, I really don't know that pairing my Nokia Bluetooth with my HP Laptop Bluetooth would add this Bluetooth connection or NOT.
I really guess this Bluetooth Connection was listed there when I connected my Lapotp Bluetooh with Nokia Bluetooth.
Thus, I will really not have any problems if I deleted it. But I am asking you what benefit of that Bluetooth Connection.
This is below was not here:

Finally Could please let me know how to use this Bluetooth Connection.(How to benefit from it)? I really use an ADSL Internet subscription, and not Dial-up connection. Also, I am connected wirelessly to a Modem-Router. Thus, what password and username should I type in the fields in the above screen shot?

Answer:'Bluetooth connection' is shown in my Network Connection suddnly.

Pairing a mobile phone will create such an entry and there's nothing to worry about. I don't think you can use it to go online since as you said you are using ADSL and if you want to go online via your modem with your phone just use the wifi connection

Question: Infuriating

I am infuriated - XP home (SP2)- followed a tip in Computer Shopper to enable windows to log straight into my account - my account was set up as an administrator - so no problems - however after rebooting and loggin me in (without password as I don't need one at home) it has turned my account into a Guest. I am unable to change settings or install software, when I try to switch to the admin account it won't let me in - won't accept my password - again I hadn't even set one.If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate any help.RussG

Right click on the drive's icon in "My Computer", choose Properties > Autoplay tab and you can set the options for different media types in there. Make sure "Prompt me each time to choose an action" isn't ticked.

Hi posted a thread before but didn't really get anywhere. I appreciate a lot of people may have listed similar problems to this already, but mine differs slightly.

We recently got an external ADSL modem (connected to the computer via USB port). It didn't work at all. The modem status was constantly 'No signal', like it wasn't connecting to anything at all.

Strangely, whenever you start using Windows Media Player to play music, or run a DVD the modem starts flickering and eventually kicks in permanently so you can connect to the internet.

So it's like a hardware sharing conflict except the modem actually requires media player to run (or as I prefer to say, "It's powered by funk".)

Any ideas? Our modem literally won't work without the all-healing power of music!

Our spec is

We are running Windows XP

Sound card is in PCI slot 3, IRQ 19. Sorry to say I don't know the location of the modem as it's plugged into the USB. On 'Device Manager' it just says 'Location: 0'.

There are 2 USB slots in the back of the computer. Only one filled.

i have a P4 machine with a dual boot win 98/win2k OS. just bought an HP psc 950 (print/scan etc). installed and used it for a couple of days without any problems till y'day when it refused to show up in win 98. tried uninstalling/reinstalling which worked once but the problem reappeared today and the darn thing just won't reinstall correctly in win 98 though its working fine in win2k. have read and re-read all the support i could find at HP. followed their advice and still haven't managed to get the printer to work in win 98.

the only piece of advice i didn't follow was to change the usb controller (the device connects via usb) from Intel 82801 BA/BAM universal host controller to Intel 82801 AB mainly because i couldn't find that driver on the list while trying to update it through the device manager and also cos i figured that if the present usb controller was working fine on win2k then it couldn't be a problem on win 98...could it?

so what should i do now?

secondary question: i ALMOST contemplated reinstalling win98 but i'm a bit wary as i've never reformated a drive on a dual-boot system. if one had to do that, how would one go about doing it?

whew...i'm going to be so grateful for any productive answers.

Answer:arrrrggghhh! how infuriating can this get?

Welcome to the CH forums.Seems like you have a hardware error and are bsod'ing but you can't see the bsod because your system is set to immediately reboot on a system error.  Have tried Safe Mode?Re-seating components and replugging might fix the problem and you can test your ram using Memtest86 from - download the bootable ISO & burn to cd.Please give a few details of your system - see here, it's very hard to provide guidance without some info.

Hi there,

I've got an extremely odd problem with one of my systems here, which has been going on for a good 3/4 months on and off. Unfortunately where I currently am I have limited access to bits of hardware, so troubleshooting is a little difficult to say the least.
A run down on the system:

ASrock K7S41 Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2800
1x 256mb DDR 2100
US Robotics 100/1000 NIC
ATI Rage 128 pro AGP Card
Windows Server 2003

Run down on the problem:

As the system is running 2003 server it's actually just being used as a stand alone file server for a little while, it's not doing that very well though! Intermittently, at random intervals I’ll receive a BSOD, the most common one I am receiving is
*** STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000007, 0x00001153, 0x12040001, 0x85ffaf78)
BAD_POOL_CALLER. (I’d like to get more details on this error for you to see, but the system seems completely dead at the moment)

I’ve read up about this error, and attempted some of the solutions but it’s unfortunately not getting me anywhere, which is why I feel the problem may be deeper than it seems.

So it dumps to the memory, then attempts to reboot...but it doesn't. The monitor stays in standby and no POST is visible. So I turn the system off and turn it back on again, same problem however - monitor stays in standby with no post.

The first problem I thought it may be was a RAM issue, so that's been replaced by a brand new stick (only the new stick is installed c... Read more

Good evening everybody.

Right, here goes. I have an Advent 7105 laptop with Windows XP which I bought in October 2006 when I started university. For the next year and a half or so it worked absolutely fine. I used the internet both via the Ethernet cable and via wireless both up in Edinburgh and at home in London and never had a problem.

This August I came to Philadelphia to study for a year and the problems began. Firstly, the wireless component. My laptop clearly recognises which networks are available (including the university one) but every time I click on it to connect it fails to do so.

That would not be a problem if the ethernet component worked as I rarely take my laptop outside my room. Unfortunately, no luck there either with the message, "A network cable has been unplugged" coming up every few seconds before it tries to connect again before failing again. I have tried it with different wires and in different places but still no luck.

The strangest thing is that for the first day (and for half an hour a couple of days ago), the internet worked absolutely fine. Apart from that, it has been impossible. I've tried loads of troubleshooting, etc. but no luck.

I would really really appreciate somebodies help.

I think this is the appropriate place to post. It could be a hardware or a software problem. I have no idea. In any case, I'm running XP and my computer has the hiccups.

My computer (specs below) has been working fine for about 9 months now, but a few days ago it started a habit of crashing within roughly 10 minutes of booting up. It freezes, the HDD status light stays lit, and if I wait long enough it bluescreens. The stop error is usually 0x000000F4.
There is also a 'refractory period' where it freezes if I try to boot up within 30 minutes of a crash.
It doesn't matter what I'm doing at the time - games, homework, music...I only have a 10-minute window in which to do things!

My initial thoughts were that something was overheating (hence the refractory period), but various monitoring programs show the temperatures to be pretty consistent until the moment of crashing. (same with fan speeds and voltages).

Everything looks OK in device manager, no question marks anywhere...

A system restore didn't change anything...

I defragged the hard disk and ran chkdsk a couple of weeks back...

Memtest thought my RAM was OK...

HijackThis and various virus checks indicate a lack of viruses...

No recent hardware changes...except a new wireless router, but it's almost exactly the same as the old model.
The only software I have installed recently (besides SpeedFan and Hmonitor) are an updated Comodo Firewall and a Realtek PCIE NIC driver.

There seem to b... Read more

Hi please help.  I'm on my own computer and my own network and I apparently "don't have permission" to simply move a folder/files from my laptop over to my network hard drive.  I have tried to "take ownership" of the network drive and folders, but it "failed to enumerate objects in the container. access is denied".  Loooooove how this system has denied me access to my own files. What operating systems are we using here? The networking options are different between various flavours of Windows, in particular if the machines use 2 different versions.
In Windows 7 or 8 the easiest thing to do is to join a "Homegroup" and share everthing.

Every time I start the computer, I get a message in a window titled "Network Connections", saying "You (or a program) have requested information" from my ISP, gives my connections, and asks which I want to use. I always cancel, but it always appears again on next boot. Thinking it might have something to do with Windows Messenger, I turned it off in Services, but it makes no difference. I have also done a deep scan for viruses and spyware, with two different programs - didn't help. I ran Hijack This!, and the only entry I didn't recognise was a reference to C:\Windows\Web\Related. Any ideas, please?

Hi all,

This is the first time I've had to ask for tech help here (so be gentle with me..!)

I'll try to explain this as best I can:

I run a fairly old but trusty Dell desktop machine with Windows XP (Service Pack 3). It's been absolutely fine since I've had it and I've updated the ram some time ago. Then last night for absolutely no apparent reason, when I turned it on and it booted up it immediately looked 'different'. The task bar had changed colour and several of the icons were missing. The text was also in a slightly different font. I then got an error message which reads: 'Exception EOleSysError in module Skype.exe at 00095A71. The RPC server is unavailable.'

However, I suspoect this is only part of the problem. The machine won't connect to the internet or even attempt to send/receive e-mails through Office Outlook (though my router / modem / wireless adapter is working). I also can't access several of my programmes. McAfee security suite won't even open. I can't remove Skype from the programmes list. The whole thing is just 'odd'!

Is there anything I can do or is it terminal? And how on earth would it have happened? - I hadn't been 'fiddling' or installing new software. It was working fine as ever when I closed it down, then when I started it up again several hours later, all hell had broken loose...

Any guidance would be very gratefully received. Thanks.

assuming this is a usb connected printer try unplugging it and plugging it in to a different usb socket. If this does not work you will have to go through the uninstall reinstall routine. Click on start - settings - printers and faxes - highlight the name of your printer and right click on uninstall. Restart your pc and the printer should be recognised and reinstalled. I recently purchased a laptop with a built in wireless adapter. Furthermore I bought a Philips SNB5600 Wireless Router.

I have no problems getting instant access to the router and the internet through the wireless adapter. The problem arises when I wish to use the Ethernet adapter to have a direct cabled connection to the router in order to configure my wireless security settings. It just will not connect. In the Network and Sharing Centre it indicates that the ethernet connection is a "Unidentified network" with Local access only. I therefore am unable to connect to the router to configure my wireless security.

If I understand correctly you need direct access to the router to configure security.

Two nights ago I was messing about with the adapters. Eventually it connected with the ethernet (i dont know what i did to make this work) but then the wireless would not connect. Again in the Network and Sharing Centre it indicated the wireless was now an "Unidentified Network".

Can someone PLEASE advise me on how to get my connections in order. Thanks in advance and appreciation for any help provided.

I have a Z710, on which the warranty expired about a month ago...  Several days ago the fan started acting up.  It randomly turns up to full speed (seems truly 100%, never heard it this loud previously), either through slow ramp-up or immediate.  It will stay at full speed for a seemingly random period of time, after which it will progress to ~2seconds off, ~1second full speed.  Once it has progressed to 2s-off/1s-on, it will continue that indefinitely until I unplug and pull the battery.  If I simply reboot or shut down, the fan will immediately return to whatever state it was in before shutting down (either constant or intermittent 100%).  Power must be lost entirely to "reset" the fan.  This occurs while in the BIOS as well, which I guess makes sense, since from what I have found there is no control over the fan in this laptop beyond inaccessible BIOS parameters? The CPU temp is usually sitting around 40C.  If I heat it up by say, running Prime95, the CPU temps will climb and eventually stabilize at about 80C.  The fan will slow down by the time it hits 60C or so, seemingly resuming its proper temp/speed relationship.  But, if I end the PRIME95 test, the fan will resume its on/off cycle as soon as the CPU cools back down.  Even while running PRIME95 at a stable 80C, the fan is not nearly as loud as it is during its 1s-on cycle or constant full-speed run. So, in order to quiet down my laptop I can A)... Hi o/

Vista 64 Sp1
Athlon x2 'Black Edition' 5000+ @ 3.2ghz
4Gb Geil Ultra RAM
BFG 8800 GTX OC2
2x Western Digital SATA HDD's in RAID

First a little background, I've been having multiple issues with shutting down and restarting the computer recently. Even after a clean shutdown and a cold boot the computer sometimes decides to run scandisk on startup. I'm slightly concerned that Vista might not be liking my RAID HDD config. I've only just made the switch to Vista from XP after Sp1 came out. Having said I haven't had this problem for the month or so I've had vista installed. It's a recent thing...

The problem...

Whenever I delete/move/copy a file, the little file transfer window comes up on screen. Problem is when its finished its task it stays there and doesn't disappear. The only way to get rid of the bloody things is to end the task using task manager. Doing this reboots explorer which doesn't take long but its bloody annoying. Another slight niggle which I believe is an extension of this problem occurs when I try to create a new folder, I finish inputting the new folder name and press enter and the file explorer window in question freezes up. Again the only way to get out of this is by ending the task through task manager.

Anyone have this problem and know of a fix? Perhaps there is a way to tell vista to not bring up the little file transfer boxes every time you move/copy/delete something, ie, it just does it in the background?

Cheers folks.

Hey all, kind of new to this so bear with me. I'm running a bone stock HP Blackbird 002 which I pre-ordered. It came with the following from stock:

MOBO - ASUS Striker Extreme
CPU - Pentium 4 QX6850 Extreme
RAM - 2 GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 800 MHz
GPU - 2 x nVidia 8800 Ultra SLI
HD - 80GB Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM Drive
500GB Seagate Barracuda 7,200 RPM Drive
OS - Windows Vista Ultimate

Recently, the high speed hard disk failed, which contained my old OS so i figured this was a perfect time to upgrade to Windows 7 while taking advantage of 64 bit and upgrading the RAM.

I have installed a new WD Raptor 10,000 drive (450GB). I'm trying to keep things simple, so I decided to install the RAM AFTER I get the OS running. Well, what do you know, it begins to "load files" and when the bar fills, I get the BSOD PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. The only hard drive installed is a 100% new Raptor drive, and I'm not sure where to go. Technical information: ***STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFFFFFA0003d14FFE, 0x0000000000000001, 0xFFFFF8000D36E415, 0x0000000000000007)

Any and all help is much appreciated.

Windows seems to have an affinity for randomly relocating some of my audio files. They're always tracks that I've ripped from retail CDs. If I move any of them from the location to which they were ripped, windows may or may not move some of them right back, and recreate all necessary subfolders in the process. They were all ripped with WMP. (Yes, I own legal copies of every song and no, I'm not distributing them.) Has this ever happened to anyone else and do you know how to stop it?

Let me preface by saying I'm fairly proficient in researching hardware and building computers, but I've been really lucky (and responsible) as far as problems go, and they go haywire so rarely that I've never bothered learning how to properly troubleshoot.

Although I would love help/suggestions with my current issue(s?), I'm mostly interested in learning the best methods for solving my own problems. Where do I start, and what do I look for first, ya know? Anyways...

I have a few issues, I'm fairly sure they're unrelated but I guess I wouldnt know. First of all, when powering on, I've long had an issue with the computer not even posting to the bios. All it takes is a restart, but its more or less a coin toss on whether it posts and continues, or whether a stationary blank prompt sits in the top right of a black screen until I restart. I tend to just put the computer to sleep, so I dont run into this very often, but I thought I'd bring it up since its obviously mobo related. Anyone know a simple answer to that one?

The main issue that brings me here today is much more heinous. On rare occasion (maybe once or twice a month) I have been getting BSODs, usually (not always) during gaming. They've never been consistent enough to bother troubleshooting, and with a restart I've always just picked up where I left off with no problems. The past week or two they've been increasing in frequency, and I had 4 last night alone, 2 of them not even in any programs. In addition ... Read more

Here is what I am experiencing -- we have a network at work with multiple computers. All of a sudden on one of the computers the font "Lucida Handwriting" is no longer available, when it always used to be. I tried to install it (with difficulty) by using the "install font" feature -- it looked as though it was installing it (from a CD) but it appears on the list of fonts as a blank space. When you click on it, the correct name comes up but the text appears as another type of font (just a block text). The font always used to be on this computer and when I install it, it does not look correct. Any thoughts? I have tried searching online for solutions, to no avail.

we absolutely need this font as it is the font used on our letterhead!

Alright, well I have built a few PCs in my day, and most of them run without any problems. Most of them, that is, except for the one I have built for myself. It's reasonably old now as I built it 2-3 years ago, but the basic low-down of my issue is this.

I built this PC and had many problems with stability, I was getting constant lock-ups without any error messages that required a hard reset when doing all ranges of tasks. I assumed it was a faulty piece of hardware so I started checking it all, memtest86 showed no problems, my hard drives were both from old computers and both freshly reformatted, my processor was running well within it's temperature ranges. I got a replacement mobo and reinstalled all the hardware, but that didn't help either It started when I was installing windows the first time, then I installed windows, and started updating my drivers and it would lock up when I was playing dvds or videos on my PC then that stopped too and it would on... My computer is working fine, and then two days ago it mysteriously starts being slow when I scroll. Well, not even slow. It's almost like it has these annoying lines...I can't even describe it.I've tried rebooting, and nothing.I've tried changing the "use smooth scrollings" settings twice, turning it on and off.I've tried changing the appearance of the computer by going into control panel, clicking on systems, and choosing the option for best performance.I've even tried using system restore, which doesn't work. One thing I did notice right before this happened is that the screen appearance was set to 800x600 before, and when I went to get on two days ago, it appeared even bigger, a setting which I didn't know was possible.I have a brother who gets on the computer sometimes, so I'm not always aware of the websites he goes to.I'm starting to think that maybe this is a virus?Does anyone know what the cause of this may be?Can anyone help me?

I am attempting to remove a nasty variant of malware from a co-workers computer and it has me completely dumbfounded. It started as a threatware program called "Best Malware Protection". I haven't been able to find any references to this anywhere else though.I ran Malware Bytes and Spybot in Safe mode as well as AVG Network Edition that we use at the office. After first trying to clean it I encountered a browser hijacker, but I don't seem to be having anymore problems now. I've attached a copy of the hijackthis log. I'd appreciate if anyone could look over the log and see fi I've missed anything.

I have just finished a new build Intel i3 on a Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H mobo running Windows 7. Both the PCI slots are vacant and I have no need of them. However, I have a device identified as "Prolific USB to COMM port (COM 6)" which infuriatingly loads no driver. I tried downloading the Prolific PL-2303 driver which was the advice thrown up by the O.S. but installation is not successful giving "Error code 10". If that is chased up through the Prolific support pages all you learn is that Prolific are fingering a dodgy cable. I have no such cable installed! Removing the device in Dev Mgr simply results in a repeat of the failure to load driver merry-go-round.

Any ideas please ?

Another slight niggle which I believe is an extension of this problem occurs when I try to create a new folder, I finish inputting the new folder name and press enter and the explorer window freezes up. Again the only way to get out of this is by ending the task through task manager.

Anyone have this problem and know of a fix? Perhaps there is a way to tell vista to not bring up the little file transfer boxes every time you move/copy/delete something, ie, it just does it in the background?

I must have installed something bad because now I am constantly bombarded with with official looking Windows Security Alerts about serious threats to my computer's safety, and fake trojan.w32.looksky warnings then directed to fake anti-spyware websites. I've created a HijackThis log to see if someone might be able to help me figure this out, as I have very little knowledge of where something like this might be hidden in my computer. On a related note, the very next time I tried to access my external hd after all this started to happen, it wasn't recognized, and windows asks to format it. This must be related, but I can't figure out how, and I'm very worried about losing it all.

I purchased a new Lenovo ThinkPad Edge with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, but I can't connect to wireless network quite often. Actually it lists available networks in the region but gives the error "Windows was unable to connect to NETWORKNAME" even if I type exactly the correct passphrase. But rarely it connects without any problem. To sum up, Windows 7 connects to the wireless network only when it wants to!! I have ipad, mobile phone and another notebook (windows vista), they all connect to this network without any problem! The network I tried to connect is encrypted with WPA-PSK. I even tried to disable the encryption, the result did not change. I updated the wireless network card, reset many times. No change! (My network is Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200) Please help me. I am really infuriated with this problem. What should I do?

I stood by the ThinkPad label. Still do. When I first used one way back in the day, it was the sturdiest and most reliable piece of consumer laptop hardware I'd ever dealt with. When Lenovo bought the brand, I was still determined that they would do the ThinkPad name good. Unfortunately, I wrongly assumed the same would go for their spin-off brand IdeaPad. I was intrigued by the touchscreen option, and bought a U530T last Black Friday. After an infuriating series of events involving hinge issues where both hinges literally snapped off, and Lenovo support trying to milk me for over $250 to fix it after promising to repair it for free, I got them to ship me a repair (which just looks like a refurbished/new model to me - different serial number and everything). So, the story should end here. My hinges seem to be doing okay for the time being, but thanks to **bleep**ty engineering I'm aware this laptop is doomed to fail eventually. But that aside, it works fine most of the time. Casually browsing Facebook without anything intensive open is great... but now I come to an equally infuriating problem - why in the world is my CPU being throttled when I most need the power, and it seems to happen mostly while plugged in? I like to play games on my laptop. Nothing crazy intensive, just some WoW and Hearthstone on low settings. On Battery it runs "fine" - 75% CPU Frequency (why not 100 here?). Yet when I attempt to do the same plugged in, I am immediately dropped to 5... Read more

Not sure if this is the right thread...
So, for the past two months my household has been trying to fix increasingly annoying internet issues.
A couple background details:
We all have decent computers, I have a brand new one, the hardware should be irrelevant, since the issues are consistent among all computers here.
There are two laptops, and four computers.  Two of the computers see extremely regular use, one laptop sees regular use, the other laptop and other computers see infrequent or almost nonexistent use.
Our ISP is Teksavvy.
our internet connection is supposed to be running at up to 25mbps.
Two months ago there was a huge storm, knocked out something like 80% of a nearby city's power.  It also happened to fry a bunch of Teksavvy servers and knocked out my house's power for most of the day.
After the storm, we started experiencing lag issues, debillitating in scope.  Easiest frame of referrence is Leage of Legends which, prior to this, ran at 100-120 ping.  After it sat firmly at 600-1500ping.
Here's where it gets weird.  The internet itself didn't seem to be hugely slowed.  We could watch videos on Youtube at 720p without lag.  But we cannot stream anything live.  At all.  Torrents run at the same speed as before the issues.  Streaming websites other than youtube are unusable.
We got in touch with Teksavvy, who told us that several of their servers ... Read more

Every time I try to install the latest update to Windows 10 using the on-line method, I get an error message that tells me to turn off my antivirus program. Installing Windows 10 this way takes up to an hour. So I'm supposed to leave my computer unprotected for an hour, when according to what I've read, the average time for an unprotected PC to become infected with a virus or malware when it's online is 12 minutes? But when I try to install the update using the full-size standalone installer, I get a message that "this update is not applicable to your computer," and after spending half an hour trying to figure out which update is applicable to my computer, I gave up. Does anyone have any advice for getting around this dilemma?

Answer:Infuriating double bind when trying to install latest Win 10 update

Where do you install this update from? And which antivirus do you use?

You can use ISO directly from Microsoft and update to 1709 version. Any later versions are not that big and the best is to update via Windows update.

I cannot find a pass code for the other computer and none is shown on the screen. Is there a way to connect the two computers?

Answer:Bluetooth connection PC to PC

Here is the step-by-step way to connect two laptops using Bluetooth.

Software and Hardware Requirements

In-built Bluetooth device on laptopBluetooth dongle (optional)Bluetooth drivers (optional)

Important - Since Bluetooth use short wave radio frequencies for data transfer, devices using radio waves should not be placed within 100 meter radius. Bluetooth signals weaken if the devices are placed more than 100 meters apart. Also before connecting the two laptops using Bluetooth, make sure that neither of the laptop is infected with any sort of virus or malicious program. They can easily get transferred from one laptop to another without your knowledge.

Step 1 ? Determine the Type of Bluetooth
The first step is to determine the type of Bluetooth device your laptop has. Refer user?s manual of your laptop to determine this. If it has inbuilt Bluetooth, proceed to step 3, else, proceed as follows:

Step 2 ? Install Bluetooth
Purchase a Bluetooth dongle from market (usually costs $10) and insert it in one of the USB ports. Windows XP or higher versions of Windows do not require any sort of driver installation, however, if it?s Windows 98, install the drivers. All types of Bluetooth also come bundled with control software, which should also be installed at this step.

Step 3 ? Switch on the Bluetooth
Switch on the Bluetooth of each laptop. A bright blue glowing light indicates that the Bluetooth has been switched on and ready for connectivity.

Step 4 ? Assign Status

Are you sure the laptop has Bluetooth? It's listed as an option on the Asus website and if it came with Bluetooth you shouldn't need to install any drivers as it would have come with them already installed from Asus.

You may be able to get the optional Bluetooth module from Asus or Ebay or where ever but it would probably be easier and less expensive to get one of the little USB Bluetooth dongles like this: IOGEAR GBU521 Bluetooth 4.0 Micro Adapter -

Evening One and all, I purchased a cheap laptop at the weekend, and ran a network cable downstairs to it to enable internet/e-mail and lan connection, after a couple of initials problems (resolved here of course :-) )this worked well with full net access plus access to the shared files on the three desktops.Today, it seemed that the opportunity to purchase a bluetooth setup at a discount cost was too much to resist. The access point is a Belkin (no specific model number), and the laptop connection unit is a Belkin usb adaptor. After the initial install, I could access the net via a 'BluetoothNullConnection' modem in the dial-up settings of IE. This is stable enough, but at 115kbps is maybe a little slow as it has a 600k connection available - still it works. The problem is that I cannot access the other pc's on the lan. The standard local area connection quite rightly states that the cable is missing, as did a bluetooth lan adaptor which also appeared. After an uninstall/reinstall, I again have the net access, but still not the lan access - and now the bluetooth lan adaptor is not there either. Given that I can see the router at the 'far end' of the network, can someone suggest how to take this a step further and see the other pc's?If I run the network wizard, the bluetooth adaptor is not available to select as the required connection. The laptop is running xp home, and the pc's xp pro. Hey, I have a windows 7, on which I have started using a bluetooth mouse. However, it takes alot of time for the bluetooth mouse to get connected to my laptop after startup, which makes it useless because I am unable to do anything until it connects. Is there any way to make the bluetooth software start faster, or connect faster? I tried to look in the task-schedular but I couldnt see the bluetooth option in there, so I am lost on what to do.

Answer:Bluetooth Connection

Bluetooth usually takes awhile to connect, due to the fact that Windows has other services and processes that load during log in, prior to bluetooth devices being detected and connecting. What's the make and model of your bluetooth mouse?
