I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Unlikely anyone has your specific drive. But in general, i've never seen a USB device that didn't work in Windows 8 that worked in Windows 7.

Answer:Xternal Hard Disk can't detect at my computer(Buffalo Ministation 1TB)

Hello Chaosadan and welcome to Seven Forums.

According to your screenshot the external hard drive (Disk 1) has no data on it. All 931.51GB is unallocated (unused) space. It also doesn't have a drive letter assigned to it. So for some reason your computer is treating the external hard drive as a newly formatted (blank) drive. Can you assign a drive letter to the external drive? Perhaps that will allow your computer to recognize the external drive and the data on it.

Drive Letter - Add, Change, or Remove in Windows

A second possibility is to use a free utility called MiniTool Partition Wizard. It has a function called Partition Recovery that lets you scan for and recover lost or deleted partitions.

Recently, I plugged in my ext 1TB buffalo HDD, but my laptop shows no icons of it. The HDD is still properly blinking its light when connected to the main usb port of my laptop.
Already trying countless solutions from multiple google searches, but still find no effective ways to access my file system in my ext HDD.

And when I tried it on another computer, it showed the same situation too. So I tried my friend's same model HDD wire, it was still the same. T___T
People might say it's physically damaged, but I never dropped it before. Thus, I really hope someone can help me.

Here's my system info
OS: windows 7 Home Premium

here's my screenshot when using Partition Wizard, but no external device detected by it. TT

In disk management, it shows no capacity info of 1TB of my ext HDD.(might be Disk 1)

My buffalo ministation 3.0 won't initialize on my desktop pc, which is running windows 10tp (sata). It does, however.. appear to be working fine when connected to my laptop that is running windows 7.. I can easily access the files on it from there. Could it be a compatibility issue with 10?

Answer:buffalo ministation exhd not initializing..

I think you already have your answer;
It does, however.. appear to be working fine when connected to my laptop that is running windows 7.. I can easily access the files on it from there. Could it be a compatibility issue with 10?Click to expand...

Win 10 is only in the testing phase. Report the bug or problem to MS and hopefully it will be fixed in the RC or RTM version.

Just a guess on my part however I would tend to think it is a security issue with win10.

Morning,

I recently purchased a Buffalo ministation to save my folders to as a back up. I've copied some folders no problem (one up to 5.38gb) but now it is telling me (on a folder smaller than 4gb) that it cannot be copied. I formatted the hdd to NTFS as soon as I got it, so it isn't that.

Any help,

thanks

Hi, does anyone know of "Buffalo"s reliability? It seems my current external drive is about to give up. Its a Western Digital 'My Book' 320gb and its making odd "clicking noises".Yesterday it disappeared from 'my computer' and i eventually got it working after pulling out all the plugs and re-booting pc. The "Buffalo DriveStation" 500gb looks a good buy from Play.com for 50. Any thoughts please - Tony

Hi all,

New to this site, so hope this is in the right place and hope you can help!

I have just purchased a 500G Buffalo external hard drive, HD-PC500U2/BK-EU. Plug it in and it is recognised by my P.C (running XP) but I cannot go any further and cannot run the DriveNavi.exe file which is on the external HD. All I get are the following error messages

The application failed to inialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

and

F:\DriveNavi.exe
Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

and

F:\DriveNavi.exe is not a valid Win32 application

I have trawled the net to try to find a solution and Buffalo support are no use at all...and extremely frustrated and would appreciate any help, please

Answer:Buffalo External Hard drive problem-Help please!

That sounds like an autorun request for the bundled DriveNavi.exe program. And "trawled the net"? . I think you've gotta format the HDD. That might just do the trick.

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation (LS-QVL), it is configured for RAID 10 and has 4 Terabytes of capacity. I am not using anywhere near the full capacity (instead I am only using about 6%!). It has occurred to me that I should make an off-site backup of the content on the LinkStation. Toward this end I would like to backup the contents of the LinkStation to an external USB hard drive.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to backup files from this NAS to an external hard drive? If it is possible any advice on how to set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Answer:Backing up Buffalo NAS to an external hard drive

Unless your NAS has a provision to mount the external hard drive via USB and supports file transfers between the volumes, you're going to have to do this over the network with the external hard drive connected to a PC that is connected to the NAS.

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

Answer:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

I am trying to use my passport portable external hard drive. I have a pentium 4 processor. Every time I try to download the software it doesn't complete the full download? Have any ideas?

Answer:I'm trying to use an external portable hard drive with my pc

I assume by 'little memory' you mean your main hard drive is filling up and you want to put new software on the external. Some software will insist on installing on the C: drive, usually in the Program Files folder. With others you can specify where you want it installed. On your main drive you can do things like a disk clean up to get rid of temp and other files that aren't needed. You can uninstall any software you know you don't need. And you can move other documents--word files, music, picture and video files, most downloaded files--onto the external drive.

How can I use an external portable hard drive to share info from my desktop to my laptop. I have Windows 7 on both machines.

Answer:portable external hard drive

Since a portable hard drive is just for storage, you have to copy the files from the desktop to the portable. Then safely remove the drive from the desktop and hook it up to the laptop. Transfer files from the drive to the laptop. Assuming they both have usb connections. The easiest way to do it would be to network the two together.

Thinking of buying one for extra storage.  Do files stored on external drive bypass the domputers hard drive or do they first download back onto the computers hard drive before opening?  Or to ask it another way, can you open a file directly from the external drive?  Any suggestions on where I should look for a primer on portable hard drives?  I assume protable and external means the same thing.  Thanks from someone who knows just a little bit more than a newbie, but not much.

Answer:portable or external hard drive questions

You can access them directly. The internal hard drive just holds Windows and programs.etc. There is no pass through of data from one to the other.I would NOT recommend running programs from an external, and as a matter of fact I would not recommend an external, but that's another issue. Keep in mind that all hard drives die eventualy, including an external , so backup important files regularly to optical media.  Here is some general info, and you can Google for a LOT more:http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,104829,00.asp

I bought this device yesterday and was in the process of moving some recorded TV shows over to it, and it wasn't telling me how long it would take, or how much had been transferred over, so I stopped it mid action.
When I tried to view the file it said some of the data was corrupted and unreadable. I tried to delete this file, but it wouldn't allow me to, as the file contained data.
In a fit of sleepy annoyance I went into the Drive Manager and deleted all of the data.
Now the computer won't even recognise it when I plug it in, and I have no idea how to get it working again.
I have ran both types of diagnostics on the device and it says it is working perfectly.
Please help!

Hi! I just ordered a Yoga 13 with 128 GB storage/ 4 GB RAM/i3 processor (great deal refurbished at Lenovo outlet!).   I also ordered a powered USB 3.0 hub to expand the USB capacity. Ultimately I will upgrade the internal memory and storage, but first I need to see if I will keep the computer, as I have read (here and elsewhere) about the ubiquitous problems with wi-fi. I was wondering....how well would a conventional external portable hard drive, such as the 1 TB Western Digital USB 3.0 portable drive (5400 RPM- I think it is called My Passport or some such thing), work with this computer, both with and without the powered hub?  I assume it would be slower than an external SSD, but it can hold everything I have with ease including programs that do not fit on the flimsy stock internal SSD, supposedly fits in a pocket, and they sell new for only about $70.  online.     I don't do gaming and high productivity is not an issue....the most demanding thing I do is probably downloading and streaming video, and running standard programs.  Thanks. protagonist

Answer:Yoga 13 with external portable hard drive

hi protagonist,

You almost won't notice the difference if you just connect the 1TB USB 3.0 external HDD on the USB 3.0 hub, or even if
you have 3 other devices connected to it (mouse, keyboard, BT dongle) as long as there's only 1 device that's doing a read/write access. If you have an external HDD and a USB flashdrive that's simultaneously doing a read/write on the USB hub then that's when the bottleneck occurs.

Although the 1Tb 5400RPM drive is not as fast as the SSD when it comes to read and write, the price, capacity and the USB 3.0 interface makes up for it.

Hope this helps

Answer:external hard drive desktop vs portable

For general information,a desktop external 3.5" type drive
is bigger and requires the use of external AC power.
A portable 2.5" external drive is smaller and uses a second
USB port to power the drive.
It doesn't need AC power.
Drive letter assignments can change when plugging drives
into different USB ports.
That can cause programs on the drive to malfunction.
It would be better to install the programs on the laptop
and keep the files they generate on the external as you
can usually change the location in the program preferences
as needed.
If it is a standalone program that runs without having to be
installed, then it could be put on the drive.
There are a lot of portable applications out there made
specifically for portable drives and flash drives.

While I was backing up Window's Vista the other night to my external hard drive, my flatmate disconnected the hard drive accidentally. Now I can't access the hard drive.

When I plug the hard drive into the USB port on any computer, I hear the USB device connected sound windows plays, the installing your hardware bubble pops up and then says the hard drive is installed properly but I can't see the hard drive under Windows Explorer. When connected the Hard drive makes an odd noise like it's trying to read the hard disk but it can't.

All my University work, songs, and personal work are on this hard drive and I have no way of accessing it.

Can anyone help me/walk me through how to recover all this information?

If you need anymore info, please ask and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Cheers,

Can anyone recommend a Portable external hard drive which will also synchronise as well (I have a  Vista Laptop and an older XP laptop which I use as a spare.)

Answer:Recommend needed for Portable external hard drive

Keith, Welcome to the CH forums. There are probably many portable Hd's that will satisfy your needs and i think it would be more productive if you shopped for the best price once you have determined what you want. If you don't need to be at the leading edge of the technology (IE one of the 1 tetra byte units that are now being offered) then drives up to 250GB are readily obtainable below $100.00 U.S. Fry's electronics (both the stores and the online) http://shop1.Fry's.com/template/harddrives/  will give you some idea of the costs. Others on the forum seem to favour "newegg" but i personally have no experience with them. Another alternative is to convert an internal hd to an external with a case enclosure. I have done this with a number of hd's of varying capacity and they work well. If you happen to have an internal that you are not using this could be a cheaper option. The cases connect via USB ports and are totally portable. goodluck ,truenorth

Recently, I been looking around for a good portable external hard drive with lots of room for my music collection to use it for dj. It is also with the intent to use it as my multimedia device such as using it to play my music with a dj program, and/or connecting it to a multimedia device. I started looking at the WD elements SE 1tb SE portable and the Iomega ego 500gb portable.

I really like the SE 1tb, but I hear many people talk negative about it such as it is not sata, it uses a propirietary connection meaning if I ever want to take out the hard drive, it will not fit in a laptop nor it can be connected with a 2.5 sata connection.

But then again, I also like Iomega ego 500gb because mainly it is said that it can support falls from 50inch, meaning it is durable and protects the hard drive and is ultra portable. But I heard that the hard drive gets too warm, and that the casing gets loosen time to time.

I really need a portable hard drive that can sustain long periods of time during the day. Please help me out, thanks.

I've recently bought a Seagate portable extension drive so that I can use it to backup my laptop. I did it for the 2nd time yesterday and it took hours - as it did the 1st time. Previously I've backed up to DVD(s) using Windows Back Up program, and it seemed to be much quicker. It seems that, now there is space available on the portable hard disk, each Windows BackUp creates a Digital Image. Having just read the PC Advisor "How To" pages, it seems that maybe what I really need to do is Create Incremental BackUps of files, photos, emails, etc but not do a full disk image each time. It also appears that some of my folders of photos could be Archived rather than BackedUp - just adding any extra ones. So - my questions are:
Does it sound as if I've understood correctly?
Is there some better free software than the Windows BackUp? For instance, I see that "Ease US Todo Backup" gets good reviews and wonder if it might be a good option for what I want to do.
Having already created the full image - will it be possible to leave that on the portable hard drive and then add the other BackUps to it?
Sorry this seems to be a long question - but this is all quite new to me and I really want to get it right!
I hope someone will be able to help! Many many thanks for your patience!

As an aside i just clone my drives then in an event of a failure i just swap drives back to normal 5 minutes max then re clone back to the drive that went pear shaped, i also alternate to two drives for safety. Hello I need urgent help with resolving this as I am trying to get the harddrive showing up or at least recover files.

I was using it at school first and my computer froze so I shut down the computer and restarted without safely removing the hard drive, at first the PC wouldnt reboot because I had it still plugged in, after unplugging it and the PC loaded up, it did not recognize the hard drive anymore. I have tried it on several PCs including the one at home all using Windows 7 and none of them recognize it.

I tried all USB ports on my PC and none of them work, the light on the hard drive is ON so I know there is no connectivity issue. I tried several free/trial softwares even the ones by Seagate and none of them recognized the drive so I cannot use their tools for recovering files or detecting the hard drive.

When I check the Disk Management, it does not show there.
When I check the Device Manager, it does not show under USB controllers but it DOES show under Disk Drives... I also checked and the drive is up to date.

The Model is BUP Slim BK.

In my quick launch, the drive is recognized there and gives me the option to Eject it but it doesn't actually Eject it when I click on it, it either stop responding or does nothing... unless I manually unplug it.

EDIT: After a really long time, the Eject message says the device is already in use which is probably why it doesnt Safely eject.

Hi, my name is perdfa from indonesia.
Recently, my computer just got infected by Tanatos J and Sality, of which I (now) am doing restore to factory settings.
The virus is originated from my infected portable hard drives, and I would like to remove the virus from my hard drives.

I have read the " instructions before posting", I would like to post the logs, however I don't understand how to do DDS and GMER to scan only portable hard drives.

Id like to ask how to it?

so sorry and many thank you's :D

Answer:Portable External Hard Drive infected by win32/Tanatos J and Sality

Hi. In your case, you are better off formatting the external hard drives also. Our tools and removal techniques are meant for the OS drive.

You can try using Kaspersky's Sality tool, which has a switch to target specific drives, but of course, that would entail making the drive active on some machine, which might infect that machine.

Does anyone know how many milliamps this device draws?

The "Technical Specification" provides plenty of info but does not specify the actual current. All it says is that it is powered directly from the USB port. But I need to know exactly what the peak ma of this device is.

I want to go an external hard drive to back up my desktop and store photos - I want to get a Seagate FreeAgent GO hard drive - but should I buy a desktop hard drive or a portable hard drive? What is the difference (in layman's terms!). Thanks.

Answer:External hard drive or portable hard drive

Desktop units will have a separate power brick to provide the power required. Portable units use power from the USB cable connection. If you intend carrying it around a lot with a laptop then portable is the one to go for. If you intend using it with a desktop as you suggest then you won't mind having a permanent power supply block (?)Hope that helps.

And also it does not appear in Computer,it was only appearing in the control panel. I tried disk management and other software to retrieve and solve this but it doesnt work. Can I still recover my file without going to retrieval company? can I still save my hard disk and use it again? thanks

Doesn't sound like it. Sounds like you are hosed. Suppose you could try the freezer trick, although I've never seen it work.

Hi,I have an external USB Buffalo hard disk attached to my Lenovo E73 W7 Pro PC.If i boot with it connected then the PC won't boot through to Windows until i disconnect the Buffalo.I have been into the Bios and set the boot order to not only styart with the HD but also ignore USB and CD ROM.Interestingly before i changed the Bios it would stop the boot and when i disconnected the Buffalo i would get the option to go the bios; now that i have changed the bios although it still doesn't boot through to Windows, when i disconnect the Buffalo the Windows spalsh screen appears immediately. So..My thoughts are that the bios change has been a good thing and now there is a Windows option that needs to be changed to make it boot to Windows ignoring the Buffalo until it has started. Has anyone any advice please? Cheers,Simon

I have an internet connection with unlimited download, so please let me know if i need to download some software or install anything to repair it. I will do it, but please help me with this issue.

Hi,

I've got a 1TB Buffalo USB external drive. It worked great until about 2 days ago. It was pre-formatted to FAT32, needing to put a 10 gig file on it, I reformatted it to NTFS. No problem.

Except my Xbox, my laptop, and my PS3 didn't recognise it anymore. Only the desktop did. I checked online, it wasn't a problem, cause PS3 and Xbox only read FAT 32 hard drives... so i knew i just needed to format back, and it would all be fine.

So I tried to format it back, but FAT32 was not an option. only exFAT. After reading about for a bit i found out i could format in FAT32 from the CMD dos Prompt.

So I tried that. It stayed at 0% for what seemed like forever, and then the system shut down.

I rebooted and now my drive isn't there. It shows in device manager as "hard drive" with no extra details, but says it's working.

It shows in Drive Manager, but is listed as "Unallocated" and "not initalised"

I know i need to initialise it to get it show again, however anytime i try I get this error:
Data Error (Cyclic redundacy check)

Can someone please help? I dont care if i lose all the data on it, I just want it reformatted and reinitalised so i can start using it again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps in any way.

I have a desktop PC that does not come with any USB 3 ports on its mainboard. Yesterday I bought a PCI-E to USB 3.0 expansion card with two ports.

I installed the card, connected the floppy power cable, and windows 10 installed its driver with no issues. There is no yellow mark in the device manager.

First I connected my USB 3.0, 2.5" Seagate drive and windows properly recognized it and set its speed at USB 3.0. I copied a lot of files at a constant max speed of about 95 MB/s. So far everything is good.

Then I tried my 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive. No matter what I did, it simply would not connect at USB 3 speed, only USB 2. I tried both ports. The drive's external power adapter is connected.

Windows does know that it's a USB 3 device, since it shows the message "This device can perform faster if connected to USB 3.0".

The drive does come with a cable with blue USB 3 connectors.

Anyone ever experienced such an issue before?

Answer:External 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive only connects at USB 2.0 mode

In general, the first thing to try with any USB device that doesn't behave correctly (or at all) is to open Device Manager, find the device and uninstall it. If you don't currently have the device connected you may need to select 'show hidden devices' in Device Manager's 'View' menu.

If an inappropriate driver had been loaded the first time it was connected it will continue to be used on all subsequent times. Uninstalling it will make windows 'forget' and choose the driver from scratch.

Hi,

I have a Buffalo ministation HD-PF500U2 500gb portable hard drive, and an ASUS laptop running Vista.

The problem is this: Whenever I plug my hard drive in, its light begins green, but turns yellow, and the computer makes absolutely no indication that it has recognised it. I went to device manager and saw a USB Mass Storage Device apparently recognised, but nothing in My Computer, and no way to access it. So I chose to 'uninstall' this Mass Storage Device on Device Manager (since Device Manager told me it was still plugged in, even when it wasn't) and then plugged my hard drive back in. I got the 'installing device driver software' message, and was told it was all fine, but the light went yellow again, and still no way to access the files.

I've tried microsofts MATS program for devices, and that tells me that some hardware changes have not been recognised, but that it has fixed the problem. It tells me this every time I run it.

Any advice?

Thanks all,

Bob

Hi Techguys

I get the BSOD with the Bad_Pool_Header error message when I connect a newly purchased external Buffalo 750GB Hard Drive to my PC. I have a HP Pavilion t3560.uk 3.4Mhz Pentium D Dual Core with 2048Mb RAM running Windows XP Home Edition SP3. The Drive worked fine until a couple of weeks in and still works fine in Windows Professional on the same machine and with a backup machine running Windows XP Home with SP3. The drive is a Buffalo 750GB USB 2.0 Drivestation. I have no problem running other Buffalo drives on the PC. The BSOD happens no matter whether the USB is attached at startup or plugged in after.
I have a copy of the BSOD details if that would help. I have about 200GB of multi media files on the drive and I need to solve this problem and get access to it again.
Any help would be really appreciated

I have a sea gate 300 gig hard drive and I cannot get the space/size on it to change. I've re booted, taken it in and out and tried different computers but they all think that there is 138 gigs free of the 300. I have a folder of stuff that has said "24.3 gigs" via properties for about a week now though I can open and close the files, play videos in it, and have added about 15 gigs of stuff to the folder. About 3 months ago I created a partition and made most of the 300 gigs FAT32 so I can play it on my ps3. I've had no issues until now. Also, I have the exact same hard drive also in FAT32 and it suddenly will not show up and it appears to be doing the same thing. When I delete files from the folder, the image still shows as it being filled with that file (on my computer). Though moved files etc still work with no issues on my computer.

I have vista, if that makes a difference.

I've had a Portable 250GB(MDL: WD2500U017-005) Western Digital hard drive for 6mths until it just stopped working. I tried it on other computers and still nothing, i can hear the hard drive spinning inside & the light is on but no computer recognizes it. I then bought a Toshiba 320GB(MDL: HDDR320E03X) Portable hard drive last month & i guess the hard drive fairy cursed me again because it also stopped working. I then tried it on other computers, but no dice, the light just comes on. As you can imagine i am quite frustrated, does anyone know what i can do for these things to work short of buying another one.

Answer:Portable External Hard Drives Stopped

Hi

Very weird issue, especially if the drive will not work on other PCs! As the drives are still within warranty period, have you raised a support call with the makers?

What windows version you using?

Do you get any error or notification messages when the drives are plugged in and you try to access the contents via My Computer? if so what are they.

Another thing to try is to delete the external drives driver file as its USB mass driver "may" have become corrupt, so to do this open Device Manager and open the USB branch, then plug in your USB drive and hopefully it will refresh and you should see the USB Mass driver ( as in mine below pic ) then right click it and choose uninstall, then reboot and plug your USB drive in and windows should start to re-recognise the drive and install the USB driver again.

Will need to do same for other ext HD as its USB Mass driver will have different signature, so only plug one drive in at a time, to do the uninstalling re-install of USB Driver.

Hi There,

I have to work with high mobility in different locations. Instead of carrying my laptop with me, I am now experimenting to use the portable applications like firefox. My solution is to put those portable applications and other frequently use files in an external 40G hard disk. And I plug in the external HDD to the computer facility I have access to.

Still there are many window applications like Dreamweaver and other window version applications I would like to use wherever I want.

Is there any solution outside there I can access to these window applications in my external HDD? Any OS I can install on my external HDD such that I can install my window applications on it and I can carry it with me all the time?

And I have difficulty to keep update my data in my home computer and my external HDD unless I sync the data on a daily basis. If I centralize the data in my home computer, how can I access them via internet seamlessly?

I am getting crazy, pls help!

Cheers
Frank

I'd like to buy a second backup drive, since our Seagate is nearly 3 years old, but I need it to be somewhere around the $30 range. All of the ones I find though seem to have 1TB of storage (I haven't managed to fill our 500GB SeaGate with 3 different computers, and now we only have 2!), and I am not convinced I really need that much room, plus they are out of the budget. I do like the dashboard that came with our old drive, so would prefer one that has some sort of backup software.

Any brand or spec recommendations that would come in at my budget?

Thanks!

AFAIK, there aren't any that are 200Gb yet. I've seen 40Gb and 80Gb ones. They have a USB cable and work just like a thumb drive without the need for an external power cable. Western Digital makes them as well as some other lesser known manufacturers.

Not sure if I goofed during purchase or if the just arrived Dell Inspiron 7000 normally comes without a CD/DVD drive. Nonetheless, I need to purchase a USB/external unit for those instances when needed.

I don't know which manufacturers are best and which to stay away from and what should be considered an acceptable transfer speed. The device will be used 99% for program install, infrequent archiving, reading other's data. Blu-ray is unnecessary.

It'd be great (I know my wife would appreciate it) if the device was available in aluminum to match the laptop.

I would be grateful to receive advice from Forum members with regards to a portable external USB drive for a Laptop. Capacity needs to be 250GB.

My research to date has revealed the following: -

1. Western Digital My Passport. Most popular external HDD but has received many bad reviews for the Sync Software that installs itself automatically when you connect the drive for the first time. The Sync Software was written by a 3rd-party vendor and is not supported by Western Digital.

2. Buffalo Mini Station. Good reviews on the hardware but terrible reviews on the software and support. Expensive per GB.

3. Seagate Free Agent. Reviews say that it is reliable but very slow.

4. Western Digital Elements. Very expensive per GB. Slow.

5. Freecom Mobile Drive. Best reviews of any product but very, very expensive per GB.

6. Freecom ToughDrive. Good reviews but has a history of failing.

Thanks for your feedback.

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Thanks!

Will I be able to use a portable hard drive on my desktop computer before I get a new laptop?

Where would I find the best deal on a portable hard drive? Any brands I should avoid?

Answer:Why are portable external hard drives more expensive than desktop hard drives?

Why are portable external hard drives more expensive than desktop hard drives?Click to expand...

It should be obvious once you think about it for a second. Portable drives are encased in an enclosure. The enclosures must provide power and a data interface for the drive, and connections to the computer. The enclosure cost money to design and manufacture and then someone or some assembly process must install the drive in the enclosure.

The desktop drive has no enclosure and the power and data connections are supplied by the computer.

Will I be able to use a portable hard drive on my desktop computer before I get a new laptop?Click to expand...

Yes - as a secondary (not boot) drive.

Where would I find the best deal on a portable hard drive? Any brands I should avoid?Click to expand...

Shop around. Check out Newegg or Tiger Direct or Amazon.

When it comes to enclosures, the drives themselves are all comparably reliable. The problem comes with the enclosures. Not all are equal or offer the same interfaces. I would look for one that supports eSATA and/or USB 3.0.

I have just bought a new portable hard drive made by Zynet, but it a Fujitsu hard drive, anyway, I came to install it, windows said it has installed the driver, but it is not showing up on my pc's, checking the disk management page I find the new hard drive is not initialized, so I click on initialize now, and get a box popping up say 'The device is not ready'?
I have updated the usb drivers to no effect, tried uninstalling, restarting, reinstalling all to no avail!
This getting REALLY annoying as I want to back 100's of GB of music on to it?

I have a portable hard drive (I/O Magic)
80 gigs

I love it, it's small.
And I can take it around with me.
I use it very often.

However, I was using it on my laptop today and I accidentally let it drop onto the carpet. The fall was only about 1 1/2 feet tops but it obviously did something negative. So, my problem is that it doesn't load up anymore when I hook the USB into my laptop or desktop. I think a wire got loose inside and that's why the drive isn't spinning. i don't know, I need help! The light still works on the portable harddrive but that's about it. I have a lot of data on this drive that I can't afford to lose!

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

I can't get my pc (os:xp2003) to read my portable hard drive (Moving Star). my usb ports onmy laptop work and function properly with all my other compatible software, and my external hard drive specifications state that it should be fully compatible with my software but when i plug it in, and follow the instructions for installation and come to an abrupt stand still because my pc doesn't even acknowledge anything being there. Also, the driver cd-rom only read as a windows music cd on my pc. Can you help me?

hi,
which hard drive you you all think is the best:

IOMEGA:
http://go.iomega.com/en/products/ext.../?partner=4740

or this LACIE:
LaCie - Rugged USB 3.0

I don't know which one to choose since my seagate agent go is broken...

Answer:Portable Hard Drive

Sorry I can't help as I haven't used either, my external drive is a Seagate Expansion so not what you would call a portable one as it's used on a desktop computer, don't have a laptop.

I suppose it comes down to what you can afford and which one would give you all the features you need, have you read any reviews about them and if so which comes out the better buy ?

Just got myself a new portable hard drive made by Zynet.
Every time I try to Initialize it, a box pops up saying The device is not ready?
I have tried changing the USb sockets it is plugged into, to no avail?
The HD is on, the pc recognises it, as it is showing up in the disk management screen.

But the strange thing is my laptop also running Windows 7 recognised straight away?

I have a portable Hard Drive, and i have a problem
I partitioned my hard drive a while ago, into different sections, for example, Music, TV Eppisodes and a Hard drive named 'Portable HDD'
I am able to acess TV Eppisodes and Portable HDD but not Music

When i try to access it i get this error

I then opened ESAEUS partition manager to have a look what the problem is and this is all i see

Ive noticed that all my other hard dives are Primary and this is logical.
What do i do to get this working please? I've tried to scan disk for errors and get this message

Thanks for reading this.

Answer:Portable Hard Drive

You might try partition recovery. But it looks like the partition is gone. It may be easier just to create a new partition and restore your backups.

I have a Sunplan USB2 Sata portable hard drive. When I plug it in to the USB port it comes up in WindowsXP as 'Installed' and lights up blue. When I click on removeable drive it tells me to put a CD in the drive. I have had it a while and have lost the disc and the power supply that came with it but I thought it would work off USB without the power supply. I have looked on the internet for a driver disc but I have had no luck in finding one. In the drive properties it comes up with 'Nil space' and I have tried plugging it into the back USB and still no luck. The name of the drive is Sumvision USB 2.0 e. Is there anyone out there that can help me please? Tony

Answer:Portable Hard drive

You need to get a Power Supply for it - USB alone is probably giving it insufficient power to operate.

Hi, Just a quickie to settle my mind.  We put all our videos and pictures off our kaptop onto a portable hard drive, MAXTOR 750GB.  But im worried if we get a virus on the PHD, and we'll lose it all .... again.  Is it possible for the PHD to become infected, and how do we protect it / scan for problems ?

Answer:Portable Hard Drive

Hey, I have a PhD too! Everyone can own a PhD this way! Your virus scanner should be configured (Usually by default) to scan any station on your computer. If not, you can scan it manually with most virus scanners. What virus scanner are you using?

I have just bought a Philips 160g hard drive, my cumputer can "see" the drive and I can send files to it. When I try to use the software that came with it, I get the error message "paremeters are incorrect" any solutions? Also when I boot up I get the message "SQL DUMPER LIBRARY is corrupted, reinstall to correct. How do I do this? I am using Windows XP

Answer:Portable hard drive

I use old hdds as back ups,(better than dvds)in an external usb caddy,no software came with it,XP and vista recongnises it as another hard drive.Never had any probs reading or writing to it.Try just using windows own "disk management"in the control panel under "admin tools" then "computer management"you can fornat it ,partion it and assign drive letters.
