Audio/Video randomly dies?

Question: Audio/Video randomly dies?

I've had this laptop over a year now, and just recently I've noticed when I leave it on a while and come back, either the audio of the entire laptop will die, or online videos just won't play. After restarting it goes back to normal until a few hours later when it happens again. I'm not sure what to do here. Can anyone help me out?

Preferred Solution: Audio/Video randomly dies?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Audio/Video randomly dies?

You are not alone with this problem, since the last windows 8 update there is sound problems with a lot of PCs. You can try this quick solution here :

You just need to enter to the Control Panel -> security and System -> System -> Device Manager

Then look for "sound, video and game controllers" put the cursor over it press right-click and select "scan for hardware changes"

3 secs after that you will have your sound working again, you gonna need to repeat this procedure every time the sound is gone in your PC and till now it always worked to me.

This should solve your problem for now, we need to wait for Microsoft's next windows 8 update, it hopefully will fix the problem in a more permanent way.

Hello there,
I've been pondering around this problem for quite a while now and I finally decided to inquire the mighty crowds of computer wisdom i.e. you all

I've had this exact same problem in my previous system (with Windows 7 32-bit and quite a bit different internals) but it wasn't nearly as frequent as it is now (with Windows 7 64-bit and brand new CPU/MB/RAM/GPU) - however, this problem never happened on my previous box while it had Windows XP installed for a short while. Namely, the audio in Windows would stop working at random, every app that uses an audio interface would freeze when attempting to access any sink, I can't change the volume or mute anything, and I cannot even reset the Windows Audio service (reset times out) when that happens - the only solution is to reboot after which everything works just fine. The only difference between my old system and this one is that now I rarely get the reset procedure to 'freeze' on 'explorer.exe - Playing log-off sound...' (requiring to force restart to continue the process), but now it more often hangs at 'Shutting down...' screen requiring a physical restart.

My audio stack consists of the integrated sound (disabled, I don't need it, but in my previous setup it was enabled) and two USB-based sound sinks, namely Logitech Z Cin?ma speakers (Default Device) and Logitech G930 headset (Default Communications Device). Both are connected directly to the motherboard USB ports so it's not a problem with wonky USB hubs.

Answer:Windows audio randomly dies (probably USB-related)

Hiyya inco and welcome for starters I am definitely no expert mate I run a straight forward Asus Xonar DG card (the Xonar supports 7:1 systems) with my Ivy B with a Logitec Z 506 speaker set up and I have no probs at all, and it is a fairly cheap card at that.
Now I don't know what your audio set up is and it sounds like Ben Hur to me but just as a suggestion why not try a different brand card? I just really like the Asus control module that comes with mine and Asus do a really nice range of sound cards.

I am just getting a gut feeling the Logitec card is not the full dollar.

Yet another problem with my peice of crap i call the "computer".

I got a new monitor at xmas, hoping to solve the problems i was haveing with my old one too no avail however.

Sometimes when im playing games etc it just looses the signal from the computer. Im using a 9800 pro 128MB graphics card, and cant understand why this is happening. The computer is still running fine though. It just wont display anything. Why could this be? I only got the card 3 months ago, it shoudlnt be doing this. It also at random intervals decides to artifact and under both circumstances i have to switch off for a while and wait before it will work again.

Things ive checked.

The card i sseated properly.
uninstalled it and reinstalled it
using latest drivers.
Using Direct X 9c
On board VGA automatically disables when AGP card is plugged in.
when uninstalled it seems to run fine from the motherboard connection (Hence im thinking dodgy card)
The car dis connected to the power supply as is nescessary.

Im totally stumped here. I can live with the situation but its not ideal, especially whe im playing gamesa and it just dies on me. Its as though the card is stopping sending the signal to my monitor.

Could this be a dodgy card? If so who do i contact about it? The place i bought the card from, or the manufacturer??

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I bought new pc parts this week and also bought Windows 10 Home while I was at it, due to W7 not accepting USB 3.0. But shortly after, I started having bad audio problems when using my headset, which is connected to my motherboard's rear 3.5mm output.

The symptoms consist of:
- The audio cutting out suddenly after just a few minutes of usage, e.g. 30 seconds of youtube, combined with the microphone not picking up any audio.

- Sound panel not responding occassionally or becoming sluggish. Can pop up later when clicking on things like browser tabs.

- High Definition Audio Device disappearing from choosable outputs in the notification area.

- Realtek High Definition Device disappearing from the Device Manager.

- Random pop-ups saying that I've either unplugged an audio device or I've plugged in an audio device multiple times in a row.

- Sound panel showing activity from both random thing I'm playing, and the Test Sound button, but no sound actually playing in the headset.

- Usually the sound cuts out with a small crackle, but other times it's completely silent when it happens. When loading the desktop I can hear some crackling too.

- ARK: Survival Evolved crashing, giving me a memory write error, followed by a notification of a decive being plugged in instantly after.

I've tried:
- Installing the latest drivers through windows update, realtek's latest drivers, motherboard's latest drivers and various .cab updates being rejected because the drivers "are up to date&... Read more

Today my CNPS7000 CPU cooler arrived. I removed the stock heatsink and installed it.I turn my PC back on after being turned off for about 5 minutes.. and my monitor tells me that there is no signal coming from my PC. Luckily I have an onboard intergrated gpu, so i switched to that and to my surprise everything ran fine. But after I installed the drivers for the onboard gpu, my Audio stopped working. In the "Sounds and Audio devices properties", in the control panel it now reads "no audio device". I re-installed the drivers and the problem persists. I try to install the program and i get an error "driver not found! reboot ur system". The reboot obviously does nothing. So now ive lost my graphics card and my audio and all i did was take my cpu out of its socket and then put it back in..The only theory that i have is that well.. i heard that if u touch a computer component without having an "anti-static" strap, u can ruin the device only by touching it.Well, i did not have the so called strap, but i touched the cpu about 50 times while installing it, and it runs fine. im not even sure that i touched the graphics card..So, im completely stomped.PC specs:Asus P4S800-MXGeforece FX 5200SiS 661FX (onboard VGA)SoundMAX (onboard Audio)1024 MB DDR-400 (detected as 512MB the first boot)Pentium 4 prescott 3.0Ghz 478P.S. When playing any type of media in any program I randomly get 1 second/two second long glitch where the sound and video of the media i am watching freezes - this causes a loud buzzing sound through the speakers (presumably this is the audio stuttering in place). Then the playback goes back to normal. This can happen once every 30-45mins or sometimes longer or shorter. This problem happens whether I'm listening to just audio on the net or if I'm playing movies in any media player. My computer is an ASUS A72F-X1 Laptop Computer - Intel Core i3-370M 2.4GHz, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, Blu-Ray/DVDRW, 17.3" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Basically I bought this laptop purely to watch media so having the video freeze and make this horrible noise every once in a while is really annoying. I've tried updating the video drivers, changing the audio / video codecs and nothing works. Help plz!

Maybe this is a hardware issue?

Answer:Win XP randomly Dies

You can test the PSU with a multimeter. Do a search on the web and you will find info on how to do this. Also, make sure the memory you put in is good. Download memtest. You'll need to put it on a bootable floppy. Then boot from the floppy and run it. It will run continously. Leave that running overnight. If it is the memory it will tell you. And if it is a problem with Winxp you'll know it because the system won't have locked up. If it does lock up the problem isn't Winxp. But rather a hardware issue.

I have a user with a dell latitude d620 laptop. Her external usb mouse stops working every few hours-- apparently when she's doing nothing out of the ordinary, the "installing new hardware" dialog comes up randomly, and when she cancels out of it, the mouse will stop working at a slightly later time. Even the red LED light on the bottom of the mouse goes out.

We've tried different models USB mice, attaching it directly to a USB port on the laptop, via the USB port on the laptop dock, and even with a USB->PS/2 adapter via the dock's PS/2 port.... all with the same results. Every time, when the mouse is working fine, it'll pop up the 'installing new hardware' dialog, and afterwards it just suddenly stops working.

Any ideas? I have no idea what's going on.

She's running windows xp sp3 with symantec endpoint, all the usual office software, really nothing out of the ordinary.

Before i start, I am Running:

WinXP-Pro, Service Pack 3
2.22 GHz Athlon 64 3500+ Processor
2 Gigs of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Graphics Card

What appears to happen is that once in a blue moon, without any prior warning, the entire computer will lock up solid for about 15 seconds then black screen me and none of my input or output devices will work. That means, Mouse, Keyboard, sound, Monitors, etc. They all die simultaneously. The odd part is, the computer is still working as far as I can tell as the system doesn't even hiccup.

It WAS doing this more than it is now, however it seems to have reduced somewhat. I'm guessing that it has something to do with my power supply as me replacing the 350 watt supply with a 550 watt supply (for a completely different problem) seems to have reduced the occurence of this issue. Instead of happening once or twice a week it now happens once or twice every 2 or 3 weeks. It's still annoying when it happens. Anyone have any clue?

I just received my new X1 Carbon yesterday. When I booted it up the first time the computer died after I set up username and password in Windows. Next time the same screen appeared but the username was ofcourse taken already. I logged into windows and the computer died. After 10-20 HDD checks the computer logs into windows and I can install some software (Visual Studio etc), but then it just dies again. Sometimes it can't even login to windows before it dies.  I've tried to format and reinstall windows but it doesn't help, sometimes I can use it for one hour, and sometimes just for 10 seconds.  I can't really say that I can see a pattern in this whether I'm using the AC chord or not.. I've also done a memory check and a harddrive check without any errors. I guess I have to return it and wait for a new one.. really disappointing =(  Any ideas Lenovo?

Question: Y500 randomly dies

Hello, Borught a y500 on amazon a few months ago, its runs great. However, the laptop suddenly just dies randomly, no blue screen, no shut down menu. It just dies, I reboot and check event viewer and its says it crashed(kennel-power). So then I checked for viruses, ran scans for chkdsk, sfc /scannow, and memory diagnostics, everything was fine. It also didn't overheat since the laptop died without gaming at all. The barrtery was plugged in as well I reset windows 8 just to check if its the OS's fault. It just died again today. If it's a hardware issue, what can I do to find out what component of hte computer is wonky? Would the limited warranty help me?

Hello. I am in need of advice once again. I'm staying at my uncles house who uses Keyon internet service so its like broadband with some sort of dish? Anyways...

The speeds were pretty random and slow. Spikes of 3000 pings and averages of 600. Updated the firmware (7 years old) and average is under a hundred now. However the internet still just completely dies for random amounts of time... 2 seconds to a few minutes. Pings timeout to google or yahoo but not my router.

As far as the setup goes, there is a dish or antennae they have aimed a little dish on the roof towards a few miles away. The "modem" is in a plastic box attached to it. The cable runs into literally the cheapest "splitter adapter" ive ever seen, which wont work if you hook up the modem line into "data out" and the router line into "data in", which confuses me in the first place. Shouldn't that be the other way around?

Anyways, I tried wifi and wired connection. I didn't try to bypass the router completely but I don't think it will make a difference. I decided to get a ladder and look at the "modem" and I was a little shocked to say the least. I opened up the big plastic thing that stores it and it literally is just a piece of like motherboard mounted with one little screw, covered in ladybugs and cobwebs. So I sighed and just left it alone.

So now, average ping is very tolerable. 50-100. Speed is at about 2mbps which is fine. I just don... Read more

We are running on a Windows Vista Ultimate (pretty old) we got it in 2007, I think.
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz 2.39 GHz
Ram: 4.00 GB
32-bit OS
(not sure if any of that helps but just in case)
We hardly ever shut our computer down, just turn the monitor off. Often times, when I turn the monitor back on, there are pop up ads (sometimes explicit and I have children!) and sometimes there will be an audio ad running but no visual.
We use Firefox for online access and 9 times out of 10, the website we type in is not where Firefox takes us.
The computer is running super slow as well.
Any help is much appreciated!
Many thanks!

Good afternoon everyone, i'd like to ask for some insight on my case which could help me sort out this problem of mine.

If i remember right, it started around 1-2 months ago at the most. My Lenovo laptop started skipping both audio and video for 1 seconds while making a "BUZZING" sound effect randomly between 2-5-10-60 minutes intervallums. It happens whatever i do: watch a movie / listen to music / play a game / watch youtube / watch streams, anything really. This youtube videos shows basically my problem, while for me, it doesn't happen as frequently in video playback, as for that individual. I wouldn't call it lagging constantly, rather just skipping frames randomly.

So afterwards i've tried to search the internet for possible sollutions and if i remember right i did most of these things already with little to no success:
- The top comment on that youtube link suggest to uninstall the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and let windows reinstall others through the windows update. This is the only sollution that HELPED ME a little bit i think. It might be a placebo effect but i think the freezing/skipping turned down from 1.5-2 seconds to 0.5-1.5 seconds.
- I've also tried unchecking this :
- I've also tried running a full Malware & Virus scan.
- I've also tried to update the audio / video drivers to my best ability.
- I've also tried disabling wire... Read more

I have recently wiped my system clean from my hdd and installed windows 10 on an ssd and am using the hdd as a storage.
I had run Windows 10 perfectly fine before wiping(When an older version of windows 10 was installed onto my hdd). After the wipe and installing, I have been experiencing random freezes about 40-70minutes into using the computer. Whether I'm watching a video, playing a game or just using the comp, it freezes everything.

When it freezes, I cannot access the taskbar, task manager or anything and need to hard reset it. However if I was playing a game, I could hear the audio from the game perfectly fine, I could move in game and shoot but the screen as well as any other program open would still be frozen.

Going idle, I would usually come back to a frozen screen, or a norton boot repair tool that shows up when my computer freezes.

Things I have tried to fix this issue:
1)Set Link State Power Management off in my power settings. Set turn off hard dist after to 0 minutes.
2)Reinstalled windows through "Reset my PC"
3)Uninstalled graphics drivers with DDU and installed it again through safe mode.
4)Did the sfc /scannow command in command prompt as administrator.
5)Did a windows system memory diagnostics.
6)Tried using the computer in safe mode, but it still freezesafter a while.
7)Ran the computer with 1 of 2 ram sticks in to see if it was a problem with the ram.
8)Cleaned CPU fans, reapplied thermal paste.
Anyone have any clue on how to fix it?

I have until Feb 28/tomorrow to return this laptop for my money back so I'd be grateful for timely advice

The laptop is an Asus Q550 LF and I really like it otherwise so I hope it gets it's act together. I am not downloading torrents/p2p etc and running plenty of security ( Malwarebytes, CC Cleaner, McAffee ). My internet is 9mbs shared with another laptop an Ipod touch and a smart phone.

Here's the specs:

Today the sound started cutting out randomly. Seems random to me at least. When it does this, I check the mixer and it registers no sound on the vertical adjuster. Simultaneously, when I try to play youtube videos they will start ( or start and restart) and then stop, showing an error message. Sometimes video works but no sound. For a minute I was told I had no internet connection. And then I leave it alone for a while, try again, and voila, the sound has returned. Ech! What could be causing this?

Because there is such a time crunch on evaluating this machine I have asked this in Windows8 as well. Hopefully that is ok with Tech Guy. Thanks so much anyone that might have troubleshooting suggestions!

Hi! T420 touchpad dies and trackpoint keeps on working. Sometimes after some time the trackpoint may also die. After boot, touchpad & trackpad recovers and is working maybe for an hour, or a day. Then it reoccurs. This happens randomly on some T420's, while other T420's doesnt encounter it never-ever. Any tips how to troubleshoot this one? Ran Lenovo PC Doctor and everything is fine, also cant find anything suspicious in Windows logs. Thanks in advance!

I've just bought the components for a new PC, and a friend has built it for me. Everything works fine for hours at a time, I can be playing games, browsing the internet, whatever. Then all of a sudden the PC cuts out, exactly as it would in a power cut, except for an almighty fan noise that kicks in and stays on until I hold the power button down to force the power off. When I say an almighty fan noise, I mean the loudest noise I've ever heard a PC make. I thought it was a hair-dryer turning itself on in the room the first time it happened.

Temperature doesn't seem to be an issue, everything's always around 40 degrees, and before I took it home the guy who built it stress tested it for hours up to 90 degrees without any problem. It has always cut out during web browsing (never whilst gaming) although that's probably just a coincidence.

Any suggestions? I literally have no clue whatsoever, what with being somewhat PC illiterate.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15-5547 running Win 8.1. Every now and then the scroll feature (two fingers vertical swipe to scroll the screen), and the two finger tap for right click, will stop working. When this happens, all the other features on the touchpad seem to work. If I restart the laptop it starts working again. I've tried going into services.msc and setting 'Human Interface Devices" to automatic startup, but it doesn't help. There's something else pretty weird also... When I go into the system tray (lower right), right click the touchpad icon, and select Touchpad Properties, it takes me into the Dell Pointing Devices windows. Inside this window, there is a sliding switch to disable the touchpad. When I disable it, the touchpad still works. Weird. Does anybody have any ideas how I can get this sorted out. I'm also using a wireless USB mouse on the same laptop, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Answer:Touchpad scroll dies randomly

Hi Jools

Personally I would look to see what touchpad driver version you are using and then either update it with an in-place update, or uninstall (my favourite option, then install new driver) the current driver and then re-install, as it may just be a slight corruption.

Latest driver HERE
Also a thought, when the touchpad stops with the scroll feature, had your laptop been left not used for a period of time, like hibernation?

My internet connection on my Vista machine dies after a few hours. If I restart, the connection will work again, but will die after a few hours again. I've used my computer with several different routers and for example in my friends' home network so I know the problem is in my computer because the internet connection always dies the same way. Usually if I'm listening music from my Spotify, that connection oddly stays on with that, same goes with some java based games like net poker and so on...messenger connection problem diagnostics say that problems are in the ports. Sometimes i've just been too tired to reboot and just kept doing something else with my computer without the internet connection then maybe an hour later the connection comes back to life. This problem is getting kinda old already that it's not funny anymore. Would appreciate if somebody had even a slight suggestion to repair this problem.

My computer has been randomly dying when i play graphic intense games. (Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, etc) The monitor says no signal and goes to standby and the sound plays the last sound playing for a few loops. I need to hold down the power button to turn it off. Sometimes after this happens the computer refuses to turn on afterwards, i would have to try a couple of times.

I have tried booting with only 1 of the 2 ram sticks (for both) and came with the same results. If the computer was already able to boot, it will. If it wasn't, it wont. I do not have an extra video card to test, and do not want to buy one until i know it REALLY is the problem.

Any input/ suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I've been having the same problem for months now and have finally decided to try to get some help after attempting multiple fixes. I use both a wired connection and wireless connection on my new laptop depending on where I am in the house (if I'm hooked up to my docking station its wired, otherwise i'll be on the wireless). The wired connection works fine, but the wireless connection will often completely die on me without any apparent cause. I'm pretty sure the problem is with my laptop due to the following reasons:

1) My dad uses the same connection when he works from home, and told me he doesn't have any problems with it.
2) Just for testing services, I tried using a neighbors WiFi connection, and received the same results.

I've tried changing my DNS server between OpenDNS, Google's DNS, etc. and have not had any luck. I made sure my wireless cards weren't sleeping by un-checking 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'. I uninstalled Hamachi to make sure it wasn't messing up any of my settings and still had the same problems. I've updated all my drivers and even re-installed them.

Just to describe what exactly happens during these disconnects, any live connections prior to the point where the internet disconnects stay alive (usually, such as Skype calls, AIM connections, certain games, etc.) and will stay open until closed. I've had  a X41 Tablet for about 2.5 years now.  Just recently in the past month it will randomly die on me, meaning it will lose all power (No shutdown screen, nothing).  If I try to turn it back on, nothing will happen.  If I plug in the AC adapter, still no power.  The only way I can get it to start back up is if I remove the battery, then place it back in forcefully or wiggle the battery around while it is back in the slot.  If it does restart, the battery is still charged like nothing had happened.  So  it isn't the battery losing it's charge.  I even tried putting another battery in from one of the X41 tablets in our office after the computer had died and it wouldn't start.  My thoughts are it has something to with the connection on the board.  Any other thoughts or ways to fix this? Thanks,JohnMessage Edited by cranjx on 06-11-2008 10:34 AM

Got my X1 Carbon yesterday. Does have the loose clickpad. Worse issue - it would power down randomly - as in you are typing and suddenly it goes completely dead, as in "lights out" or someone pull the plug type dead. Also does not sleep properly - often when it goes to sleep it dies and you get an improper windows shutdown warning when you restart it. Happens both with AC power and battery power. Was on hold for 1.5 hours trying to reach a sales rep to make an exchange and got disconnected. Tried to do factory restore just to see what will happen but F11 on startup does not work. The notebook looks great but otherwise I can't say I am very happy with my experience.

Way to go Lenovo... 20th Anniv. flagship model and units are shipping with missing parts, poor build quality/loose screws and who knows what other issues will appear in another week. If mine isn't perfect when I receive it on Monday it will be my last Lenovo. Your long-time Thinkpad users are very disappointed... What a joke! EDIT: Now it looks like we're getting DOA's... Awesome. Who's building these things?!

Not sure if I should post this here or the networking forum but I assume some nice patron will direct me to the correct place if I'm wrong.

For a while now, and for no apparent reason, my internet connection completely dies. But, it's only to my computer. My computer will slow down DRAMATICALLY, stuttering violently as I try to do anything. But if I restart my computer it comes back on as if no problem was ever there.

I am hooked through a router through an ethernet cable and my wife is connected to it wirelessly and she is never affected.

Is this an XP problem, hardware, or maybe even the hardwire ports of my router?

Help! =(

Well... I had a Win 7 Ultimate 64bit on this very machine (the one in my preferences) for almost 3 years until the moment when I said to myself: OK, time to refresh. And that only because my port 80 would die sometimes....sometimes thrice an hour for 10-15 min, sometimes twice a day. But it would happen every day. I re-installed with the hope it was just a bad Win installation but it happened again after just an hour in. What I tried? Well, I certainly tried a new router, but it didn't help. I knew it wouldn't since I also run Linux and OS X in home network and none is affected by this. I scanned old and new Win 7 with every possible malware finder, antivirus..etc. Even bought one (I have an "allergy" when it comes to A/Vs and such in general).. I went drastic today, I disconnected all devices (hdds, usbs, dvdroms, pcie) just to prove my point.. left a single 60 GB SSD with brand new win 7 with default drivers .. Took several hours but I still lost port 80 (it seems to be just port 80 since only browsers and windows LIVE are affected on my system)...Skype, FTP, rsync.. they'll all work just fine while nothing else web-wise does.

Help please! Any suggestions will be tested and reported.

Answer:Port 80 dies randomly, everything else works

What do you mean by "port 80 dies"? skype, ftp all works as you say. So not a tcp/ip routing/connection problem.

Hi Everyone

In my previous house I would lose connection to the internet about 2-3 times a week. Since moving into my new house it happens more like 5-15 times a day. The internet light on my modem goes out and the broadband light blinks on and off.

95% of the time when I lose the connection it is for less than 2 minutes. But on some occasions it can take a half hour to work again.

Some more info:
- It happens on all 6 computers/devices in my household at the same time. (2 Macs, Win7 PC, iPad, iPod, PS3).
- All devices are connected wirelessly to modem. But, I have also tried Ethernet and still have same problem.
- I have tried 2 modems (including a brand new one that my ISP sent after I complained).
- I have tried using different jack points and cables.
- When the connection fails, I am still able to wirelessly access my modems config page. So wifi connection is not the issue.
- My ISP sent a technician out. He replaced one cable out by the road, but this did not solve the problem.

I have spent a few hours over multiple days on the phone with my ISP. First they said there was no problem with the line. Then they said there is definitively something wrong with the line. Then nothing wrong, then something wrong. Finally after they monitored the line for 3 separate 24 periods, they decided that the problem was solved. And I thought so too... I had good connection for about 36 hours. But then it started failing again, so far today I have lost connection about 10 times... Read more

Hi there,

I can't seem to figure this problem out. Every so often (from seconds to a couple minutes) my internet connection will fail, but only for less than a second. Typically no one would even notice this, but it becomes a problem when you use software like Messenger or you play games online. The disconnection is long enough to sign you off.

I've been watching a ping I set to for a good 10 minutes, and sure enough, there are occasional spots where for just 1-3 attemps it will time out, then get replies just fine again.

I use a wired ethernet connection, not wireless. The ethernet port is part of my motherboard, its a fairly modern motherboard, not an old one, and I made sure the driver for it was up to date. Any ideas?

As the title says, my mouse stops working for a couple of seconds and then starts working perfectly again. It mainly happens when I am playing BF3, the game freezes for a second, then I hear the usb-removal sound Windows makes and the game unfreezes but the mouse is dead, then game freezes again for a second and mouse starts working. During the moment mouse is dead all other USB connected things works, only mouse that dies.
It has happened a few times before when im not in any game.

Why is this happening? I have never had any problem with this before.
I have tried putting my mouse a different USB port and it helped for a day or two and then it happened again.

I have had this same problem a few months ago. Although it happened with my mouse and keyboard simultaneously. My main harddrive was going bad. I replaced it and have not had the problem since. It was rather confusing at first as I had never seen these symptoms before from a bad harddrive.

My computer is being extremely odd right now. Randomly, usually while gaming but at other times also, it will just die. When this happens, it kinda just freezes while repeating the same sound on a loop. It loses all video and sounds like all the insides shut off. When it does this, hitting reset doesn't really work, and usually I cannot turn it off and back on. If I try, I get no beep in POST which indicates to me it would be CPU or MoBo...maybe a power supply?

If I unplug the power from the back for a minute, I can restart it and it will go through POST with the beep and all, and say CPU is unworkable or has been changed, and then play fine for anywhere between 5 minutes to many hours with no problems, then it will happen again.

I cannot tell what wattage my PS is. I built most of this computer about 5 years ago, and have since modded the power supply case, and lost the sticker. The CPU is the original one I got when I built it, the MoBo is 4 years old, and the video card is new.

it seems to happen most often when playing video or playing facebook games of any type. there is no warning the computer is just OFF. it has done this in safe mode as well and i wasn't even watching video or playing any games then. the only time it has done this before it was over heated. now sometimes it is hot and others it is not so it really seems random. no viruses, no malware, regular maintenance is kept up. if i can find a solution other than formatting the machine that would be great, or at least knowing if formatting would do me any good at all. i have downloaded hijack this and the TSGInfo follows:

Hello, I've been having this problem for a little while now, and I figured this would be the right section to post it in (if not, please feel free to move it). This is the problem I've been having. While playing a 3D game, after a short while, one of 3 things will happen :1. The screen goes completely black and I'm left with no choice but to restart my computer.2. Similar to number one, except now the screen has random blocks of crazy colors all over, and I'm still left with no choice but to restart.3. The computer saves me the trouble of having to hit the power button, and just goes ahead and instantly restarts itself (screen goes black for a sec, and then I'm on the start up screen). And one more problem that I've chosen to separate from those 3; sometimes my computer just completely freezes and I need to restart. This happens seemingly randomly, at any time.I suspect this has something to do with a new video card I installed recently. I've had those 3 problems a bit before, but they are occurring much more frequently with the new card, and the random freezing thing is something new. So perhaps I installed it incorrectly, or its in some way not compatible with my system? I don't know, thats why I come here to ask you guys, any ideas whats going on?Video Card : Nvidia GeForce FX 5200**Might be worth noting that I did not purchase this hardware, it was given to me by a friend, therefor I have no documentation or disc with it**Misc System... I have Lenovo T500 Thinkpad for around one year. The laptop started to die randomly without any notification, no blue screen, no shut down, it just dies as if there is no power to the laptop. First I thought it could be a problem with the battery so I replaced my battery with the battery of another Lenovo T500. Even after that the problem persisted. So I removed the battery and just connected the laptop to AC power. The laptop does not die any more and I didnt face any issues. What could cause a problem like this? Whenever I connect the battery, the battery icon on the task bar says its charging and even if I use the battery alone the laptop works fine for sometime until it dies randomly. Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Answer:Keyboard / mousepad on laptop dies randomly

well based on the info provided my first guess would be that the keyboard is shot.... or ... if its a toshiba TE 2000 it might be the connector that the the keyboard ribbon connects to might be loose and need resoldering...but that would be the only 2 i can think of right at the moment... let us know how you fix it so it can possibly be of help to others

I got this laptop 2 months ago and it worked just fine but lately it's been dying randomly (the battery was at 98%) for absolutely no reason, no prompts all i can hear is a sound coming from the hard disk just as if the laptop was force shut down by holding the power button key. The laptop temperatures weren't high at the time (mostly all components @ 45°C). I use this laptop for college and it's been REALLY unreliable & I can't return it at this time since I'm at a dorm and i don't think it would even get a RMA since it happens randomly (you can't expect it at all - i only had word and microsoft edge opened and poof it's dead) - also i can always start it again instantly but SOMETIMES it dies again in the booting process. Also I successfully ran an Aida64 stress test until the battery died normally (it did NOT shut down). Any suggestions on what i should do? Edit: oops i sent this twice by accident

I've been having an issue with my X270 laptop since I bought it. The laptop is running Windows 10. What happens is randomly (this can take weeks, or days) the trackpad and pointing stick completely stops working. The only solution is to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them using an external mouse. I've tried various versions of the drivers, including the latest, and it still continues to happen. Any solutions to fix this?

I have had my 3000 N100 Thinkpad for around 2 years now and after a year and a half I realised the Battery was no longer charging, soon after this happened my Laptop would just die randomly, when I say die I mean there is no shutdown screen  it is as iff all power to the p.c. suddenly stopped. At first I though it must be a Virus but after numerous scans and re-installing Windows the problem re-occured, Today I opened the P.C. and checked the fan as I thought maybe it was over heating and eventually giving in, I was relieved to see a load of dust and used the vacumn to clear the fan.I thought that would fix the problem but now if anything it seems worse, I know the battery is dead as the charge level is 0 and the battery indicator on the front of the laptop flashes 5 times organge before disappears completely...In a Final attempt I have disconnected the battery completely and am now running it only on the power adapter, I don't know if this will work but I need to do something...What could cause a problem like this, all of my settings are correct my power settings are set to always on with no hibernation.Any help will be wonderful. Thanks

Maybe the battery just went bad. The only way I can think of to test it would be to try the battery in another Lenovo 3000 or to try a new battery in your Lenovo 3000.

the last two days my machine has suffered a crash with similar symptoms. First, the display goes blank. I can see some disk activity. This continues for maybe 20-30 seconds and then the machine shuts down. Yesterday, I had to restart the machine twice b/c the first attempt also resulted in a shutdown during the boot process.I thought that perhaps it was an overheating issue, but I'm not convinced of that as today there was nothing obstructing the exhaust vents (though they were a bit dusty).I'm runing windows 7 pro, 64 bit. If it is a W510, graphics are probably 1GB NVIDIA® Quadro® FX880M.  It is hard to diagnose from a thousand miles away, but my first guess is overheating. I suggest installing TPFancontrol (free) and monitor temperatures.

Hey all, I recently got myself a headset to use for voicechat during gaming. It's a Razer Carcharias and has the two inputs for mic and audio. I have a modest gaming rig that I built recently, and I am loving Windows 7 except for this issue!

I can use the headphones just fine at length, but if I try to use the mic (in Steam or Skype), it will work fine for a little bit. Then suddenly I'll hear a little "zzt" and all of my Windows sound is dead. The system still thinks it's working, I can see the levels moving, but no sound comes out.

If I unplug and re-plug, nothing. If I plug in different headphones or a speaker, nothing. Only a restart fixes it. This happens on both the front and rear panel jacks.

With steam this happens almost immediately (after 2-10 minutes), with Skype (only audio chat, no video) it took over half an hour before it cut out (ironically just as I was saying "Hey guess what, the audio hasn't cut out!").

I have updated my Realtek drivers, still happens. The correct devices are listed as default and are recognized when I plug/unplug them.

Went back to the default Windows one, still happens.

When this happens, the mic still works. Only the audio dies. I've googled this to high heaven and back, and I've found people with similar problems but no solutions. Please help if you have any inkling whatsoever as to what I can do to remedy this!

Thank you!

Answer:All audio dies after using mic for a bit

Hey, so.. thanks, I guess?

I got a USB Audio adapter to circumvent the issue, and it seems to be a solution. Not a fix, but definitely an alternative that works just fine.

Peace out~

Question: audio dies

when i switch on my computer all sound works fine but randomly sometimes it all stops, often when browsing myspace. and then songs in wmp are playing but not audible.

any thoughts?

restarting is the only way i know to correct this,

Answer:audio dies

Download the program from the link below and install it.

Once installed run it and on the left panel select "Issues". Then towards the middle bottoms click on the button "Scan for Issues". Now a progress bar will show up towards the top. Once finished click on the button "Fix selected issues...". A new dialog opens and just click "Fix all Errors". Once done close everything and see if that fixes your problem. If not let me know.

(this is my first post in here so sorry for 'lack of knowledge' and 'crappy english')

Since two days I have a problem with my audio...
It started after installing codemasters Dirt3.
I also installed F1 2011 after that, and know they both come with 'rapture 3d'

Problem however is that even when using 'software'-setting instead of rapture,
the sound is good for a few minutes then fades to left-speaker for another few minutes and then it's completely gone.
This only happens when playing games (playing songs, watching movies, audio on f.e. youtube or other internet-apps gives no audio-problems)

The strange thing is that I already had Codemasters Grid installed, and played it for a few months without any problem. Now the audio-problem also appears when playing Grid.
Also after the problem has occured, the sound stays gone for a few minutes (so no sound on other then gaming-applications)

Specs of PC:

ASUS P7H55D-M Pro motherboard
Intel i5-650 processor
using build in HD audio (realtek ALC892 codec)
win 7 Ultimate
speakers: two creative speakers + subwoofer (on 1 jack)

Things I already tried:
- changing Rapture 3D-settings
- set audio to software-driver instead of rapture
- uninstalling rapture
- uninstalling realtek audio-driver and re-installing (from asus site)
- changing speaker settings on realtek-app (from plain stereo to 5.1,...)
- puting speaker jack from back- to front-input

Really getting desperate because... Read more

Answer:Audio fades and dies

Yesterday I firstly 'undusted my motherboard, graphic card,...', because saw that temperature in PC was getting very high
(suspect that this was the main cause?)
then went by 'method of determination?':
- deleted Dirt 3, F1 2011 and rapture from PC...
- tried audio in Grid (no audio problem)
- installed F1 2011 + rapture (no audio problem)
- installed Dirt 3 (no audio problem)

Played Dirt 3 and F1 for more then an hour without fading sound,
so hopefully the issue won't come back

I'm pulling my hair out over this one so if anyone has any idea please, please let me hear them!

I have the following setup:

Windows 7 Pro x64
Intel DP55WG mobo w/ onboard RealTek HD (889)
Driver Version: from RealTek
MSI Nvidia GTX 460

Just using normal analog speakers or headphones audio works as expected. I can play WoW, Rift, a number of other games, iTunes, play a DVD, whatever - it all works fine and as expected. I can do this for hours and hours with no issues.

When I try to run any TWO or more programs that use audio at the same time (like vent and a game, or a game and iTunes for example); after a random amount of time the audio to the speakers will just cut out - like it's muted. This happens with headphones or normal stereo speakers plugged into the rear analog jack. I have not tested with any other speaker setups as I don't have any right now.

Here is some of the troubleshooting I've done:
- There are no error messages in any system logs.

- The mixer acts like nothing is wrong you can see audio levels playing, adjust sound level, etc but nothing comes out of the speakers.

- If I put the machine into sleep mode or reboot it the sound starts working again.

- While the audio is "cut out" the mic still works (people in skype or vent can still hear me but I can not hear them - I can also "monitor" the mic and it outputs the mic sound to my speakers).

- I've uninstalled, reinstalled drivers. I've tried older drivers and the n... Read more

So i just got my pc repaired because the power supply got busted, but now it seems that the graphics card is malfunctioning. What would happen is when using the pc the monitor would just go black sometimes. Because of this i have to plug the monitor to the motherboard just to do some homework. I dont know how to fix it, waiting seems to be a solution. It just fixes itself randomly. Sometimes when i turn it on while plugged to the graphics card it works, and other times it doesnt. Also this did happen before the power supply broke. I dont know if it is connected to the broken psu or not.

Fellow geeks,

My Pentium 3 Win 98 PC (which I use for games) has an Nvidia MX 4000 card. It worked fine for a few months, but yesterday I booted up - everuthing looked normal (the Intel mobo screen, the video ID, and even the Win98 logo), but once it gets to the dsktop, WHAM, the display is totally scrambled. I installed another old video card and now its OK, so I guess my nvidia driver got corrupted. Why would that happen all of the sudden? Theres no new TSRs loading, no new hardware was installed, nothing different.

I'll reinstall the driver and run some diagnostics, but I was curious to see if this problem is common or if anyone knows why my driver would crap out only once the desktop is reached during bootup. I scanned for viuses (I always update my definitions).

Thanks in advance

Answer:Video OK when booting, then dies

If you installed another video card and it's now okay, then it would be the old video card and not the driver.

Did you install another card and used the existing driver, or a new card and a new driver?

Title, but this is a newly refurbished computer. Monitors (plural) brand new. Got the new everything. Set it up. Randomly the monitors would go black. Within 5 seconds the audio would turn off (sometimes it would cut back in for a second at random intervals). There were at least 2 occasions the tower died without prompting after that.

I used my warranty and got a newly refurbished version of the same computer, one they tested before it left their warehouse. While they ran diagnostics on the computer I sent back. I had the same issue, they found no problems with the computer I sent back. I tried using only one of my monitors using VGA, then the other one with VGA, then the first one using the display port to HDMI then next monitor the same way. Nope. Different plug for the tower and the monitors; tried that. Different circuit than the original same plug for both monitor and tower. Nope. I think something is wrong with my set up, or some software because I don't think it's the tower. No clue what it could be. Please help.

The audio never returns unless I restart my system...Now, sometimes the audio returns after I close IE but it is very rare...I have checked all my connections, cords, etc.....when the problem occurs, it always does so after arriving at certain websites and returns after a restart.... I am to the point that I tend to avoid sites I really want to visit because I'm afraid the audio i'm listening to will be killed and I'll need to restart.....

This problem has occurred even after a few repartions of my system!! Problem did not seem to appear after any Windows updates......I'm very VERY sick of this... Please help!

System: Dell Dimensions Windows XP SP 3

Answer:Audio completely dies on whole system when I arrive at certain websites

Any ideas or anyone run across this problem??

In BIOS under settings~video~primary video (note that 'primary video' is the only choice under 'video'. Even when a video card is added (this dell does have integrated video))
"This field determines which video controller will become the primary video controller when 2 controllers are available in the system. The selection matters only if there are 2 video controllers present
'Auto=Use the ad-in video controller' (default)
'ONBOARD/PEG=Use the integrated video controller unless a PCI-Express Graphics (PEG) card is installed. The PEG card will override and disable the integrated video controller
Dont these two say the same thing?

Answer:what dies this BIOS video setting mean?

Hi Paulmars
Thanks for writing to us.
Auto (default) :: Is for an add on card (extra card if added)
Onboard ::  is for the integrated.

Hi, I've been having an annoying issue I can't seem resolve ever since 8.1 came out. I've tried reinstalling drivers but that didn't help and I'm really not sure where to go from there. I've never had this issue on any other machine and to be frank, it really pisses me off that the drivers are so glitchy. Anyways, the laptop is a ASUS K55A and originally came with windows 8. I've tried updating the drivers once the 8.1 version came out but the problem keeps recurring.

See what'll happen is, I can be watching a tv show or movie and once it's over or even if I pause it for say 10 minutes, the sound will completely cut out. I won't know this until I resume or play another video. It happens every single time, I don't get it. My only remedy right now is to open the task manager and restart the audiosrv service for the sound to work again. The funny thing is, the video will play to the end and when it stops, then the sound dies so it's not every x minutes.

On top of this, the video can be playing just fine but if I want to play a random flash video and pause my show for a bit, the flash video will play for 2 seconds then stop. no sound, no playback after 2 seconds. so my question is, outside of drivers, what else can I do? Is there some sort of patch or fix I may need or maybe a driver from someone else? I don't know, help me out man.

Answer:Sound dies after playing video file

Welp, I played with some drivers I had downloaded and they did nothing but bluescreen my laptop. somehow I ended up using the high definition audio device drivers after removing any trace of realtek drivers and a few reboots. so far it works, we'll see for how long. btw, the drivers from the asus website just wound up bluescreening.

This question has been asked by countless people, and the Internet is filled with a wild array of answers.
If you bought an HP system many years ago, and it came with Windows XP, and you have the re-installation disc, if your system dies or needs to be recommissioned because it's unreliable, can't you use the re-installation disc to install the OS onto the new system? I've heard some limitations are involved but I don't know fact from fiction on these:
1. You can reinstall only IF you upgrade the system with the same motherboard because the key for the install is tied to the serial number of the motherboard.
2. You can reinstall only if you move the hard drive of the old system to the new one (which for me would be impossible because the old drive is IDE and the new one is SATA).
3. You can reinstall only if the new computer is a model from the same vendor (e.g., if you have the reinstall disc for a Dell computer it will only work in another Dell computer).
4. If you call MS customer support and explain that your system's motherboard has died they will "reactivate" the license for you on the new system.
5. You can't do it in any scenario because your EULA will state that you agreed to install the OS on the one computer and agreed it would not be used on another system.
Anybody have any definitive answers on this issue?

Answer:T or F: Your OEM license for Windows XP dies when your system dies.

True...simple answer to your topic title.

This is inexcusable! I paid over a grand for my Dell. Does Dell care that I don't even make a living wage? Capitalists are freaking monsters. And you won't get me to change my mind about that no matter how many hospitals in Yemen you bomb or how much you rant about non existent Russian aggression. Cost cutting? I think neoliberal capitalism, and gangster Corporatocracy and mafia capitalism are all things we can't afford, ergo... I don't even earn a living wage while corporations cost cut, job cut. tax evade and push governments to sign evil "free trade" agreements giving them more power, at our expense. I video conference speeches and process them to VCD format. I capture video on miniDV tape or directly on computer using 1394 (firewire) port. I take audio seperately from mixer into computer using 'audacity' or 'accoustica' program. I use Ulead Video Studio 8 to match video & audio and then process it. These 2 streams match well in the begining, but then these go out of sync by upto 5 sec. Need help urgently.

Using Core2Duo desktop, 4 GB DDR2 RAM (800MHz FSB), SATA Hard Disk 7200 rpm.

Answer:Audio-video out of sync in video processing in Ulead Video Studio

The problem is that the framerates are a little bit different and there is no keyframe info for each to keep themselves in sync.

In fact some media companies deliberately introduce keyframe errors so that conversion prgrams and the like don't keep the video and audio in sync.

I'm still waiting for a good solution myself but at least you know you're not the only one with the problem by a long shot.

Everything was working perfectly up until yesterday so I have no idea what the issue is.

HELLLLP - I've looked everywhere and I cannot find an answer to this question! I am clear on how to replace the video footage audio with a soundtrack (thank you!) However, HOW do you go back and forth from video footage audio to soundtrack audio within the movie? I have a soundtrack playing during one portion of my movie - then I want to fade it out to listen to a speaking part within the movie and I can't do it - HELPP!

Answer:Window Live Movie Maker - video footage audio to soundtrack audio

1. Use WLMM (windows live movie maker) -
2. Spit the movie into the pieces where you want to keep the sound and where you want to replace it. Here is my video tutorial on how to do that ( YouTube - S1 Video Split V2 ).
3. For deleting sound, go to the edit button, Video Volume on the left and move the slider all the way to the left.
4. Then you can add your own sound with the "Add Music" icon on the Home tab. The "Fade" function is on the "Edit" tab,
5. You could add nice Headers and Trailers if you want to fancy it up. I believe I explain that in this tutorial ( YouTube - S2 - Video Editing.wmv ).
6. When you are done "Save Movie"

Good day,I have spent some time investigating the forums and I cannot find a description similar to the issues I experience with my W540.  These are serious concerns for a piece of expensive workstation hardware such as this. AUDIO issue 1: using the built-in speakers, the maximum volume that I can put my computer to is around 30 (out of 50, so around 60%).  Any level higher than that and the audio gets louder but is discontinuous.  Audio plays but drops out/clicks about in a continuous cyclic manner (with a frequency of ~ 1-2 dropouts per second).  This issue ONLY applies to the built in speakers - if I plug in headphones, audio is great.  If I use Bluetooth speaker at close range - the audio is good and level can be inscreased past the 30 threshold. AUDIO issue 2: the computer syncing between the audio and video is atrocious. Youtube videos go out of sync.  Movies played on the DVD player go out of sync.  If you stop and restart the media player it corrects but goes out of sync again after awhile.  This issue is browser independant and media player independent.  I suspect this is just a faulty design of the motherboard re: the audio chip and the video processing, but I don't know.  I know it is unacceptable.I am embarrassed to watch a movie on my W540 with my wife because she mocks me for the piece of junk PC that I've bought.  This is my first Lenovo and so far I'm not impressed.  The specs on this machi... Hi ,
I have some Windows Media Audio/Video files that were recorded from my web cam. I would like to be able to edit (remove)
some audio portions of these audio/video files without cutting out a section of the video. I have Windows movie maker but just alows me to cut the audio/video together. I also have Goldwave. This works great for audio files but does not support video.
Do you know of any programs that will allow me to do this?

I'm trying to upload my Sony dcr-trv19 camera mini-dv tapes using "Video 2 PC" with no success. I've tried S-video to S-video, yellow to yellow, and yellow to yellow, white, red without success. I get an MPG file but when I play it there is no video or audio. Please advise.

Answer:Sony video-cam, video 2 pc, no video or audio output

There should be a Firewire (otherwise called IEEE 1394 or DV Link) port on the camera, it looks like a mini USB port. Using a Firewire cable, connect this port to the Firewire port on your laptop or PC. If your PC has no Firewire port, you can add one by buying a PCI Firewire card.

i am having trouble capturing video from my Sony DCR-TRV140 camcorder. i have been able to capture video but the audio doesn't sync up correctly with the video when i play it back on my computer.

i am using a 1394 cable (i used to use a usb but the quality of the video is SOOOO much better with the 1394), and have tried capturing with several programs, like movie movie maker and power director 6, same results for both of those programs. i have also tried capturing with adobe premiere pro 2 but it won't even recognize my camcorder. i was wondering if 1394 has drivers like usb, and if i could try updating them?

i never had a problem in the past until recently. also, i used to use a program that when i captured video, i could set in and out points so that i can manually create clips as i am capturing the video, but i cannot remember which program it was... any ideas?

i posted this on a video editing forum, but have not had any help there.

so basically 3 questions:

what is going on with the audio not syncing up with the video?
why isn't adobe premiere pro seeing my camcorder?
does 1394 have drivers, and if so, where can i update them?
what program lets me capture video while creating in and out points to manually create clips?

The frame remains frozen until any key on the keyboard is pressed or the mouse-button is clicked. This is a very irritating problem. Can anyone please help me solve this problem.

Alright, I have spend about 3 years trying to resolve this problem and I have done so much research that I felt it would be a waste for me not to post something about it.
After I owned two Dell laptops, the XPS13 and Alienware 17. Both having the same problems. I tried everything, I read through all of the forums and I tried everytthing these forums have suggested and at multiple occasions I ruined my laptop and had to format it.
I also always had the full warrenty with Dell customer service and have replaced my xps13 TWICE and my Alienware once. This is of course after replacing the motherboard and the hard drive and spending endless hours over the phone with them while they update all my drivers and ensure my software is running correctly. They ran 100's of tests on my computer to see why this is happening and no one could ever solve this problem.
However, after all this research with no solution in sight I thought of the problem logically. My alienware was running 16 gb of ram and 1 TB of HDD regular hard drive. I figured if I have so much ram to run anything I want, maybe it is having the regular hard drive that is not keeping up with the ram. Sure enough, when I went and bought the best SSD out there Samsung Pro 950 256 GB and installed it and used it as my operating system while the HDD ran as my storage. For the first time in 3 years and 4 computers... my pc was running with no jitterz or lagging or any issues!

The past month my laptop developed a very strange problem that has me baffled. Randomly I lose all audio and to restore it I either have to restart the windows audio service or restart the system.

It happens randomly but once it happens the first time it keeps happening again and again, if that makes sense. So my guess is something is triggering the problem. What happens is that the audio device becomes unresponsive in the sense that it is being used by another application (or so it says).

Common scenarios:

* I am watching a video and then I switch to another video -> no sound
* I am in a skype call, the audio of the call is fine but everything else -> no sound

When this happens trying to play the test tone in the audio devices results in, the device is being used by another process (or something along these lines)

Things already tried (or things that might be important to note):

*Reinstalled audio drivers
*Unchecked option to give exclusive access to applications in the sound device
*Removed a number of recent windows updates
*Happens with both the integrated sound card and an external dac (Nuforce uDac-2), so it's not device specific
*Checked the system for errors with chkdsk, no problems found

Any ideas?

My Audio (Microphone AND Speakers) disable frequently. I have check the device manager and there were no conflicts, I installed the vista drivers for my mainboard but the problem persists. I was about to go and purchase a new sound card to try that but I was hoping someone here could help. Also I don't know if this has anything to do with it but anything's possible, my Operating System everytime I boot asks me to install driver for new PCI device but won't tell me what PCI device it wants to install, it can't find the driver automatically. I believe this began after I attempted to install a PCI video card which was a first what I attributed the PCI driver problem to.

The title is pretty self-explanatory. Occasionally, my audio will randomly disable itself (as in, the volume doesn't change but the audio is muted). Additionally, whenever my audio turns off, any video or song (as in, youtube videos and songs from iTunes and Zune) slow down dramatically. So, I cannot "watch" text either, because the video is playing at around .25x speed. Whenever it does happen, it is normally after I unplug my headset, but it doesn't happen every time I unplug it. Finally, it is beginning to happen more randomly. I will be watching a video and as soon as I pause it, the audio disables. Any idea what's going on?

Answer:Audio Randomly Turns off

Yes. Software is causing it to bug out.

Best thing you can do is update the software and drivers to all that you use, to latest. Some software tends to control the whole Windows audio stack when you start it, like some Cyberlink software. It can mute or dictate Windows volume.

For good measure, also install latest bios.

Test the system without headset attached at all after, if necessary, to see if that is the main cause still.

I am having problems with my computer, in fact my old laptop had the same problem with the same video files, any 1080p video files I may have on my computer will have a problem where the audio will stop for 3 - 5 seconds while the video continues to play, if I play-through the whole video with the audio stopping, the video ends before the audio, but if I skip to the end of the video at any point in the playback, the audio is in sync. I'm wondering if it is a Windows 7 related bug because the computers with the problem all run Windows 7. I could only find things on the internet regarding video websites like Youtube and such but I couldn't find anything with files on the computer. If those same videos I have problems with are uploaded to a video hosting website, they play just find without skipping on the website, even when my Internet slows around 6PM.

Answer:video files. audio keeps stopping, video continues to play

I am still having this problem
Can someone please help me?

Answer:Lenovo Ideapad Y580, Video Games getting Shivers and Hiccups, (Video freezing/Audio Looping Problem)

hi UncleAli,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Your issue might be similar to this thread.
Getting artifacts while playing games is mostly a sign that the GPU is failing. To verify this, try to:
1. Download and install Passmark's BurnInTest standard edition.
2. After installing, It will then create a shotcut on the desktop. Right click on the Passmark BurnIntest shortcut, configure it to use with the Nvidia Graphics Processor and run a burn-in test on GPU (2D and 3D tests)
If the GPU is fine, the burn in test shouldn't show any artifacts.
- Link to picture
If the GPU is failing, you will notice artifacts on the 2D/3D test.
- Link to picture
If you get the artifacts while doing the GPU test, I recommend you contact Lenovo and report the issue.
As for the COM Surrogate problem, check this website for a possible fix (this is for Vista but also applies to Win7).

ive been putting up with bad audio on my pc for ages. i did post a while back but got a dead end. anyhow just before xmas 2007 .. i came across a service pak for WIN98se. i tried it & things seem fine. sometime after i noticed my audio problem ( caused by creative mp3 player editing software) had mysteriously repaired its self !!! well i was right chuffed. this is the longest ive gone without having to do a total re-install!! & the audio is running nice n smooth.

right .. some more time passed & one day i went on u-tube & was watching videos .. & had viewed a few .. when the page just sat there. I thought it was a memory thing .. so i rebooted. went back to u-tube & ... it just sat there ... static. i thought .. -oh its just the broadband playing up again- as u do .. ill look tommorrow. again it was static ...
well after about a week of fiddling i found that WAV files dont seem to be affected ... and videos on the pc are ok ... but its a compression fault. MP3,s play for 1second & stop.
ive several players inc winamp .. same thing on all. if u go to u-tube the video starts & locks ... ziltch.

> bright idea < i re-installed the service pak & .. PRESTO ... mp3 now working ... for a while ... errrr ??????
ive re-installed this service pak / uninstalled & re-installed the audio card/ driver so many times but with no joy. the service pak has the most reponce.

Last nite the videos & MP3,s stopped playing AGAIN !!!!! GRRRRRRRRRR... Read more

Hi, I'm having a problem. I've tried everything I know of or could find in a couple days of searching.

Since installing a new power supply & video card, my PC is having frequent slowdowns. The mouse will freeze for a few seconds and then teleport across the screen, typing text (like this post) will have occasional freezes and then catch up, etc. In online gaming (City of Heroes) the video will stutter. Also, the sound stutters, both in the game and when playing system sounds and MP3s. Ingame, the sound and video both stutter at the same time.

My first thought was heat, so I installed a program called RivaTuner to let me see the video card temperature. It hovers around 36-37 degrees celsius when web browsing, and has risen as high as 44 degrees while gaming. I haven't gamed for more than two consecutive hours yet, so it may go even higher. That said, the fans seem to be doing a good job of removing the heat, and the problems are about the same regardless of temperature. According to what I've read, for a video card anything under 60 degrees is good.

I opened the device manager and uninstalled the old video card driver. There were no hardware conflicts and DMA was not disabled. DirectX is updated to 9.0.

Drivers: the new video card came with a CD that installed nv4_disp.dll, which Windows XP says is unsigned. On the off chance the card didn't come with the latest driver, I downloaded the most recent one I could find from the MSI website, but it... Read more

I have tried loading VLC, K-Lite codecs, tried playing in WMP/WMC/WINAMP/VLC all with no luck. They play the audio fine, and I can open some WMVs ok, but others won't open.

I have tested the files on another PC using VLC and they play fine.
Anyone know of any special way to check what codec could be the culprit?

Answer:Can't play some WMV video files? Audio plays. No video.

Try Media Player Classic-Homecinema. It has it's own codecs, so you don't need to install anymore, just like VLC. I've found that MPC-HC plays just about any kind of media file out there.

Hi, my relatively new "HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 Notebook PC" has been having crippling lag while playing video games. The lag slows the computer down to about 0.2-0.5 frames per second, and slows the audio down to match the video speed (which produces a grinding sound). This lag happens every 10-45 seconds depending on how long the computer has been running. Some help would be appreciated.

Answer:Grinding audio/video lag during video games (CPU related?)

What antivirus program are you using? Is the notebook fully updated using Windows Update? Are you running Windows 8.1?

Randomly my Yoga 2 Pro will end up the audio panned to the left or right.  I have to dig into the audio properties to find and adjust the setting back to center.  I think this happens when I plug in / or unplug headphones.  Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?

I'm really stupid with computers and I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

Im not sure If should be posting logs here right off the bat.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
