I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: any fix for via hd deck crackling sound in windows 8

Brand new bios 3/19/12 - I'd install it and hope for the best. I'd also test by setting the Windows 8 power option to high performance:

Crackling sound after installing Windows 7

Hello! Not too long ago I upgraded to Windows 7 from my old Windows Vista. However, all sound coming from my computer is crackling, whether it is from the built-in speakers or headphones. Furthermore, I have discovered that the crackling can be greatly reduced by choosing to play sounds in 16-bits 48000 Hz-quality in control panel. The problem is that I still hear crackling, sometimes it is a continous crackling that can annoy the crap out of you, and sometimes it's just an occasional crackle here and there. It also seems to have something to do with what kind of sound that is being played, for instance I hear almost no crackling when playing songs such as The Fray - You Found Me, but the Windows warning sound will always crackle.

As for my specs, I have an ASUS X71SL-laptop, you'll find the specs listed on http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=VUta9GoKvKtJx21G.

EDIT: probably worth mentioning that I upgraded from Vista Home Premium 32-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

You must have done a fresh install as it is impossible to upgrade from a 32-bit to a 64-bit version.

Do you have the latest drivers installed?

Hi guys,

I have an E-System 1211 laptop and I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate from Windows Vista.

Since this upgrade - all sounds (including music, windows sounds etc) on my laptop have started to crackle and distort - even through external speakers and headphones, so i'm pretty sure its nothing to do with my laptop speakers..?

I'm pretty clueless to be honest, all sound was working fine before I upgraded to 7. I can still hear all sounds okay, but the crackle and distortion is really beginning to irritate me.

Not sure if i've posted this in this right place - but i'd be very grateful if for a solution.

Cheers.

Oh - and I have just discovered that the crackling seems to get worse when I'm running on the laptop battery and not from the power point.

Good day,

before of you read, sorry for my bad english :D

ok, i have the old pc HP Compaq 6735s oldiest model and have problem.. I have the headset Plantronics .Audio 655 DSP... Its USB (no Jack) headset, but sound is crackly and randomly.. Microphone is good, no problem, also speakers... I tested in another pc, and work correctly (Win 7), also in WIN XP not installed drivers.. I telled the makers of headset and reply is here:

Quote:

So in the Windows 8 now it does not work? It was not an XP as I said? In that case it is most likely incompatible. Think about that the headset is made years ago while Windows 8 just released. Contact Microsoft and check if they have any updates to the USB drivers that will be able to use older USB devices?

I tested reinstall USB drivers, not work.. I tested install sound drivers, but for Win 8 not found...

Answer:Windows 8: Speakers have crackling sound

Hello GAMELASTER and welcome to TSF,

Your USB headset does not rely on the Audio chipset.

The Plantronics website touts it as not needing software... I can't find any issues similar to yours by searching the WWW, so I have no base to work from.

Just so I am clear... You are running Windows 8 on a Compaq 6735s?

Try using a different USB port.

Have you had any other issues since upgrading to Windows 8?

Hello all,

Let me first start off by saying I'm a very advanced PC user, so no need to dumb anything down unless otherwise stated. Here is a list of my hardware:

EVGA 790i Ultra SLI Motherboard (onboard sound disabled)
Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 @ 3.0GHz
4GB Corsair Dominator DDR3
Two EVGA 9800 GTX+'s currently not in SLI due to bug being mentioned.
Creative X-Fi Elite Pro
Operating on Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Now onto the issue. I recently purchased the remnants of a friend's PC after he upgraded, he assured me everything was in working order and he had no trouble and his word rang true. The only issue he claimed to have was in a strange combination of attempting to run World of Warcraft and Skype at the same time while SLI was enabled. I unfortunately have had worse luck with SLI. Upon enabling it and starting any 3D heavy application or game, a strange crackling begins to occur whenever anything even slightly bass heavy plays, and then grows worse from then onward. I've first tried the simple stuff, reseating cards, dusting them off, making sure they don't share any power leads with one another. Then went on to more advanced stuff, downloading Daniel K's (if that's his name, can't remember) 2.0 Support Pack for the creative cards on Vista/7. It didn't do anything to improve it. My friend said he never had an issue like this, but he was using a Razer soundcard I had given him for his birthday at that time. That is why I'm confused as to if it is a hardware or softw... Answer:Another sound crackling/distortion issue under Windows 7 x64

An update for something I just attempted, which was to swap the video cards in the event that was an issue, same result. An added symptom I forgot to mention was that if I let it go on long enough, the crackling and distorting will eventually force all sound to quit, or only stick to the left channel.

I've got this laptop for christmas and I've had many problems with it so far but I've solved all of them but this one. I've been looking for a solution via google and can't find anything that works for me. It's an Acer Aspire laptop with 2.7GHz(with turbo boots from 1.7GHz) intel i5 cpu and nvidia geforce 840M video card with 2GB vram. The laptop itself has 8GB DDR3 ram. I've reinstalled the windows 3 times already trying to fix the issue but it's still happening. When I watch youtube videos or streams on twitch the sound pops and crackles and everything starts lagging for a few seconds, especially when I open another tab. Rarely happens in games and when I watch movies in the laptop. I've tried updating my drivers but every single one of them say that it's up to date. I'm hopeless at this point, can't fix this problem myself.

Hello,

now that my CMOS problem is fixed i thought about posting the next one. Before it seems as if I am a newbie, I can say that I am really experienced with Desktop PCs and I never had such problems. It seems as if everything changes when you switch to a laptop. Like don't leave the ac adapter on when akku is charged cause it can weaken it over time...annoying CMOS unloadings.....don't suspend your laptop to too much heat because of the akku...and so on and so on.

Well now it is the sound under windows....it seems as if every time the lap is getting out of sleep mode, the sound is crackling all time. Even the "geeting out of sleep mode" sound crackles.
I updated the sound driver and tried even some new codecs and the sound card settings. But it still crackles. Sometimes when i watch a movie then, the movie is jumping and the sound is crackling. So it's like a performance problem (like playing a dvd on a 90 MhZ Pentium with 32 MB RAM).
What could this now be?

Answer:Satellite P100-102 sound crackling under windows

Hello Stefan

Like you can see the notebooks are a little bit sensitive but don?t worry about that. After just a few months you will not want to use desktop anymore.

Back to your problem: check HDD activity while you watch the movie. Maybe runs something in background and disturb it. As far as I know on this unit there is NORTON virus security application preinstalled. Try to disable it for a while and check if unit runs better and faster.

If this is your first laptop play a little bit with all settings and check how all tools and utilities works. Believe me when the notebook is once configured well it will works without problem.

When my computer first turns on the sound in the speakers is distorted. Its very scratchy and if theres enough volume in them you can hear a hum. When I right click the icon on the tray for the hd audio deck and click exit the sound problems persist, but when I reselect the program I just closed it instantly corrects the distortion completely. What is going on and how do I fix it?

Answer:VIA HD AUDIO DECK sound distortion

No replys and still no help online please tell me how to fix this problem. If i play test sounds through the audiodeck it plays fine but any other program sounds scratchy. If i reset the audiodeck it works again for a little while any one know how to fix this.

System specs? What sound do you have? e.g. RealTek, SigmaTel, SoundBlaster? What speaker system do you have?

We can't really help you without some specifics.

Coming from XP to Win 7, there are some hardware that may not be compatible. e.g. the old SoundMax (ADI) integrated audio does not have Vista/Win 7 drivers and the XP drivers are not compatible or not 100% compatible.

Since installing the windows 10 features update couple of months back, I am having trouble with my audio. There is a problem with the speakers when playing audio, I think it could be a problem with the RealTek audio driver as I uninstalled it and tested audio with the Microsoft HD audio driver and there are no problems, however the audio is so quiet. I have tried everything from BIOS updates, uninstalling and reinstalling the realtek driver, lots of troubleshooting and nothing has worked so far. When I play any audio the sound starts off fine, for example I'm watching a Youtube video and the sound is perfect, but when i drag the slider along to skip a part of the video the sound starts to crackle. It's difficult to explain the sound it makes but it sounds like there is too much bass or like it's under water. I had no problems with the sound before, even when I installed Windows 10 for the first time the sound was still perfect. I just noticed this problem ever since i had a recent update for the Windows 10 features update.

I would really appreciate some help not being super techy at all.

The problem first showed itself whilst playing just one game, when the game was graphics heavy the sound would begin to crackle, then slow down incredibly, eventually disappear completely and then crash the game and computer.

I checked all the specs for the game which were all good, updated graphics card driver, no driver update available for sound card.

The problem is now evident across the system, where graphics and sound are intensive. Eg: Playing music and browsing the web. Everytime I scroll the web page, the sound goes slow and crackly. Then I have a bsod.

I have now disabled my soundcard and have not yet crashed.

Elsewhere (Wikipedia) I have read there are compatibility issues with windows 7 and Nforce4 chipset.

Any help, guidance to resolve the issue, or indeed throw my computer in the nearest bin, much appreciated.

CPU: Amd Athlon 64 2800
Motherboard: ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe
Chipset: Nvidea Nforce4
Graphics card: Nvidea Geforce 8800 GTX
Soundcard : Realtek AC97
Operating System: Windows 7

After the crashes, I requested a solution, i found this in messages today.

Address a problem with Game Port
This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between your computer's Game Port and your 64-bit version of Windows. The Game Port is only compatible with 32-bit versions of Windows.

This problem is not critical, but you can prevent it from occurring again by disabling the Game Port in your computer's BIOS. Refer to the instructions that came with your computer that explain how to access the BIOS and turn off Game Port support. So.... ?

Yeah.

Can anyone translate that into english? If the game port is on the soundcard, will it stop the soundcard from working?

Hello,
I have been up all night and morning now, trying to get my sound to work properly. But without any success.
I keep getting some noise / crackling as any kind of sound plays (even Windows tones), and I cant figure this out any more.
I reinstalled via. Device Manager, tried another driver (won't let me install, says Windows found the newest and best tho)
I'm about to give up on this Windows 10 already, seems like this is a huge problem, but to Realtek tho.
I have a Asus Rampage Extreme II with the SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD, and I tried literally everything.
My DxDiag is below, please save me then I wake up again...

It?s strange because according to these Toshiba document the problem should be solved:

The sound card which is used on the board supports an Intel High Definition Audio

Maybe it?s possible to find another sound driver which supports this chip?

Hello, so I have VIA HD Audio Deck as my audio codec and I have a big problem since I can't play video games with having proper sounds If I use speakers and If I use headphones it just don't work. With speakers my left and right ear have the same sound from all directions so I can't use speakers for gaming. Also I don't have front panel to plug my headphones in and I have only back panel available.
Things I have done:
Went to sound Options, headphones were showing and they were as default for my sound and communication.
My headphone microhpone is working wether I use speaker or headphone option in my VIA Audio deck panel.

With my previous motherboard which had same VIA codec it worked normaly.

Some picture and explained reasons
Here are my advanced options where I have put Independent Headphones since if choose "Redirected Headphones" I won't see Headphone option in main panel - http://i.imgur.com/cnizmSM.png
With Headphones checked and put as default it doesn't work - http://i.imgur.com/YkyDdWb.png
With Stereo checked, sound works, but as I said it sounds like I would have 1 stereo - http://i.imgur.com/gU2DmFP.png

My motherboards audio specs - 5.1 CH HD Audio (VIA? VT1705 Audio Codec)

Please help!

I have also done diagnostic test but everything fine in Test. Please help me with this problem, I am unable to listen music and watch movies. Your Help will be highly appreciated.

I built a custom desktop a couple of months ago. I have a Gigabyte Z77X-DH3 mobo inside an Antec Nine Hundred case.

Gigabyte Z77X-DH3 Manual

Nine Hundred Manual

I'm not very sharp when it comes to computer audio, but here's what I'm looking at (I think...). The mobo has integrated audio which uses the VIA VT2021 audio codec. The case also has headphone/mic inputs on the front panel. This is connected to the mobo using the provided High Definition Audio cable (as opposed to AC97). I have speakers connected to the integrated audio, and a headset connected to the front panel headphone/mic ports.

In windows, I am using the VIA HD Audio Deck software. In the advanced options menu, I have the headphones set on the "Independent Headphone" option, which makes the headphones show up as it's own device in the windows playback device menu (which is what I want), instead of showing it as the speakers. The problem is, when I make the headphones the active device, they don't play any sound. The green equalizer bars next to the device in the windows menu show the device is playing, but no sound comes from the headphones themselves. If I switch the setting in the VIA software to "Redirected Headphone", using the same port, it works fine (but it shows up as the same device as the speakers).

In the Device Manager, under "Sounds, video and game controllers", I have 3 devices listed: AMD High Definition Audio Device
High Definition Audio Device
VIA ... Read more

Answer:VIA HD Audio Deck - Front panel headphone device not producing sound

First get rid of the High Definition Audio Device. That was probably a default device that Windows installed, before you installed either the AMD video drivers or the VIA sound drivers. Whether that is interferring with what you want to do? (or if what you want to do can be done).

I just built a new PC with a gigabyte Z77X UD5H motherboard and it has RealTek audio on it.

In the RealTek control panel, I can set the front panel headset jack to either mute the speakers (normal) or to not mute the speakers so that both the speakers and headset work.

But, if you are trying to get two different default audio playback devices at the same time, you can't do that. Windows limits you to only one default audio playback device.

I spent an hour on the phone with a technician who restored the laptop with Windows 8.1 to an earlier point in time and it stopped crackling for the rest of the day, but the next day, the noise was back.
The worst are "ding" sounds, they have more crackle than ding. Video playback is bad but at least we can understand what is said. Youtube is bad. mp3 audio is bad. Crackle is there with earphones too.

Does it make the noise only when running on battery power or also when plugged into house current?

Every time i have to use something involving
sound it sounds rubbish.
The sound isn't played smoothly there are pauses and there is a big cracking
sound sometimes in it.

This is not because of the speakers, I have also tright it through the headphone tube.
Could this possilybe because of a damaged soundcard.

It's sound really rubbish and the laptop isn't even 2 years old yet.

What could it be?

Answer:Satellite L665D - sound isn't played smoothly - crackling sound

Hi

I think this is not related to faulty sound card but due to old iRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) driver.

I found an thread about very similar issue.
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=60231

Update of the iRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver) to version V10.1.0.1008 or higher should solve this problem.

I recommend trying this out!

Hello, about 3 days ago i bought a sealed brand new HP OMEN 17-W03np which comes with Windows 10 Home (64-bit), i noticed there were some problems with the sound which have been a constant problem since day one. Before and after any sound plays there are these pops/crackling sounds that are noticable (and pretty irritating), the sound appears to play fine after it starts but in a few occasions the sound actually started breaking and there were random pauses while playing sound. There was also this one time the volume randomly went up and down on its own when pausing a sound (in this case it was a video) and then playing it again.Random pops/crackling have also happened while i was on my browser on web pages but there was no sound sources in the web page at all. I've attempted to use earphones while testing sound, and while using them the pops/crackling sound sometimes come out through the earphones, but sometimes they also come out through the notebooks built-in speakers despite the fact the sound is then played through the earphones (which i found pretty strange). This is my first experience with HP and i have to say i am feeling quite dissapointed, could this be a software problem or will i have to send my notebook back? I'd also like to point out that no major program/software installations have been done as this is a brand new notebook so most of the programs/software in it right now are the ones that come pre-installed with the notebook. I will a... Hi folks,

Recently I was setting up a VPN client (PacketIX), and the setup wizard suggested some Audio/Video Streaming "Optimization" tweaks. I didn't pay attention and confirmed.

Since then, I often hear some crackling / popping noises. For instance, this systematically occurs when I Alt/Tab between a running game and my desktop.

An obvious guess is that the damn VPN client messed up some sound settings, but I can't figure out what to do.

I've found a good deal of DPC latency workarounds around here which I tried in vain.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Answer:[Sound crackling ] VPN client messed up my sound settings

Try a system restore to before you installed the VPN client. (System Restore)

Then reinstall the VPN client and don't let it fiddle with the audio settings.

Hi.My laptop model is hp 15g009ax.When i stop hearing song or any audio in earphones, after approximately 6 seconds I hear a quick crackling sound. The crackling sound comes after any sound that ends or After the specific application that is playing the audio is closed). I will tell you what is did to stop this.1) I updated the sound driver from hp support website specific to my model. Didn't work2) Tried the earphones in other phones and lapotps. Working fine.3) Thought the problem is with windows. So dual-booted windows with Ubuntu 14.04.1. When I tried Ubuntu without installing it, earphones seemed to work fine without crackling after sound ends. But after installing Ubuntu and checked, the same problem repeated, but this time crackling sound started coming before the sound starts and after the sound ends. This is very irritating and after reading some articles about this problem, Some said the problem is due to interference(Not sure) of motherboard with soundcard. Can you please specify the source of this problem and a solution to it.Thanks In Advance

I've been having issues since February's windows updates with crackling sound typically in DirectX games and some video playback such as Steam. In an effort to isolate the problem out I've gone over all my drivers and dust contamination yet again this month. I removed both the 3.51 and 4.01 Klite packs and the VLC player I had been using. Registry cleaned and defragged.

My sound card is an Audigy Fatality champion series with the front panel breakout box.

June 3 2009 driver for it #6.0.1.1373

Dxdiag attached as well.

Next on my list is to see if maybe there's new drivers for my tv tuner capture board which does have sound card resources apparently.

As a side note, I use Ventrilo daily. When ever I launch it after a fresh reboot and connect to a server it locks the PC up for like 90 seconds before behaving normally and displaying the MOTD. It's done this for maybe 6 months. Whenever I have bad game problems I can generally disconnect and reconnect from the vent server without that little annoyance. I want to lay the blame at DirectX, but I've tried several forced updates of it without any improvement.

Playing in the APB beta as well, and thru tips from those players disabled multimedia network throttling in the registry which improved in game performance there a ton.
I really do not want to reload this machine as it takes an eternity to get everything back the way I like it.

My motherboard is a PCCHIPS M848LU V1.2 http://www.pcchipsusa.com/prod-m848lu.asp and the onboard sound is a C-Media AC97 (I don't know the exacts of it, but I think I can find out) It has up-to-date drivers

I just bought this comp from maincomp.com, its an AMD Athlon XP2600+, maxtor 30gig 7200rpm hd, 128mb ddr pc2100 ram (512 PC2700, whenever it gets here...) nvidia 128mb geforce4mx440, Windows XP Professional SP1a, 52x24x52x cd-rw..onboard NIC, onboard sound.

Anyway, whenever I play *most* (I say most because a few mp3s either from winamp radiostations or mp3s on my harddrive dont crack, but the sound quality is still alittle bad) it cracks some-what badly, some worse than others.. I've tried reinstalling the drivers and messing around with the settings, no help...everythings brand-new, so think it might be defective, or an hardware conflict? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Sound crackling, bad quality (onbored sound)

Well you could visit the PCCHIPS website and see if they have any updates for the Sound.

Also try another pair of speakers, could be bad speakers or a damaged cable/plug.

Thats a fairly nice machine, however you shouldn't have skimped on the motherboard - its one of the lowest end manufacturers of mobo's.

You may be better off by simple buying a PCI soundcard - I recommend a Creative Soundblaster - and disable the onboard sound. You'll get better quality sound and better performance in games.

If i increase volume, the crackling gets worse, and distortion really sets in. Strange....only started happening last week. I have tried reinstalling my sound card driver, but no change there. Have looked around all my audio settings but cant find any clues. music etc is still listenable, but there is just a faint crackle constantly annoying me. and distortion if i turn the volume up louder.

Does this mean my sound card is wearing out?? or is it a physical prob inside?

Hello,
I upgraded my Win XP to Win 7 like 1 month ago.
Downloaded all drivers (from their sites) updated them... then i open WMP 11 and start playing some music. After listening to that i heard some weird sound lag, I believe its called crackling. I searched on internet found some solutions, but none worked and none was for mine sound card.
This wasn't happening on Win XP.
Oh and if i have older version of driver it works way batter (only hear crackling when my cpu goes up to 1000MB (100%) ), but then my Microphone goes really quiet like I disabled microphone boost.

Hope you understand my problem.

Hi Everyone,

This issue has been going on for about a year now, both on 32 and 64 bit XP. My computer is around 3 years old, and no hardware has changed since then.

All my drivers are up-to-date, BIOS updates, software, patches, windows etc.

I have had lots of "theories" or "temp fixes" sent to me but in reality are not suitable.

When I play music (with any player) sometimes the sound crackles, to resolve the issue I have to pause then unpause the song and it stops for the duration of that song.

My Sound Card:

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 Sound Card - OEM (PCI-Express)

I have found lots of information, but non suitable.

Sound issues with crackling and popping
A number of owners of X-Fi cards have come to experience what is known as a constant popping and crackling noise during use of the cards. Creative has attributed the case to be NVIDIA nForce motherboards, however many other users who do not use these motherboards continue to experience the sound issues. Creative has not provided a fix as of yet for this

I have 680i SLI NIVDIA motherboard.. but none of the above fixes work.

There's tons of websites/webpages with people having the same problem.

Answer:Sound Blaster X-Fi [Sound issues crackling]

It's a bit hard to suggest without going through everything to see what you might have tried already (although I did have a look at your second link and a very quick look at the third). So please excuse if you have already tried the following, or if they seem too obvious (more hardware than software suggestions, as you have perhaps been trying mostly software, by the look of it).

It kinda sounds like something's deteriorating, and when you give it a moment to rest, it resets itself.

You haven't mentioned anything about your speakers (or headphones). Are they OK? Have you tried others, or tried yours in another computer? Can you try a USB speaker (if you haven't got that already)? How are the connections/cables/jacks?

Do you have an onboard audio driver you can try (ie take out the sound card)? Can you borrow a sound card to try?

Maybe it's a poor connection, including solder joint, in there somewhere. Hard to track down - have to try swapping things.

Is your problem confined to one medium (CD/DVD, stored audio files, downloaded music), or does it happen with all types?

Does it happen when you're eating Rice Bubbles? -D) (It's late, OK?)

Any possibility of interference from nearby electronics or electrical appliances?

Is your power supply unit OK? (Don't know why these last two items would be fixed by pausing the song, but I'm running low on ideas - maybe I'll stop here and let someone else have a go...)

Question: Crackling Sound

When I listen to music using Winamp or Windows Media Player (CD and MP3) after a while it gets crackly and sounds funny. If I stop it then play it again its fine. Its really annoying to have to stop and start songs all the time. Is there a way to fix this?

Answer:Crackling Sound

how much ram does your pc have? if it's less than 256 on xp then that can cause this type of problem. if this is the case then you can go to www.blackviper.com and go through his tutorial on xp and that will help free up the ram. Also download latest drivers for your sound device. if you have onboard sound the drivers will be located on the manufactures site for the mainboard or pc if you have a namebrand ie dell, hp. If you installed a soundcard then you'll have to go to the soundcard manufacturer's site to get the latest set of drivers. you probably know where to find your driver's but I add this info just in case you do not.

I have all the latest drivers installed on my P50, but I still hear pop/crackling sounds whenever some audio is playing, irrespective of the source. There's a thread here which addresses pop sounds when nothing is playing, so this is a different case. You might think this might me due to clipping as I'm overworking the onboard amplifiers, but this is not the case because even at very low volumes I still hear the pop/crackling sounds. It's the type of sound you hear from someone with a severe cold trying to clear his very clogged nostrils. It's really irritating having to hear it about 5 times every minute. The most weird part of it all is that if I reinstall the drivers, the pop/crackling sound disappears entirely. However, they return after 2 or more restarts. I only experience this issue when the onboard soundcard is being used because I don't notice the issue through my external dac + amp combo. Can someone help here ?

u said all the settings were the same but u may have missed this, check to see if your sound settings are set for digital out instead of analog....if you dont have digital speakers and it is, all you will hear is crackling.

Question: Sound crackling...

So here is my problem,

I just got a new Win XP Media Center PC with 2 gigs RAM, 360 GB HDD, ATI Radeon video card etc.. I usually don't have many app's open at a time, but when I began playing the Sims I started using more RAM. The Sims 2 takes up about 550 MB of my PC's RAM. The sound on the game's sound crackles when the game is loading or if I am zooming in/out, even when I am clicking on items and giving commands. I tried EA tech support, but I then realized that the same sound crackling happens when I have many app's open using over 600 MB of memory.

I am using a Plantronics Gamecom Pro headset (USB). I tested the sound using a pair of stereo phone jack headphones, but the same crackling still happened.

What could be the problem? I checked all my sound codecs and everything seems to be working normally there.

Thanks everyone!

Question: Sound crackling

Hi everyone,

For the past few months I've had a problem on my desktop PC, where for seemingly no reason after a few hours of being switched on, the sound will start crackling.

I'm using windows 7 service pack 1 as my OS, and at first i thought the problem was with windows but now I'm not so sure, as the crackling will also happen on my VM using win 7 pro, and also Ubuntu (the only 2 OS installed on my VM).although they are set to use the host audio.

I then began thinking it must be my speakers so i checked the connections, which seemed fine and them plugged in some headphones to listen for the crackling through them, and found the crackling was also happening throught the headphones so this must discount it being a problem with the speakers.

The crackling sound can best be described as like the sound of when one plays an LP and it kind of crackles at the start. It can get worse than that at times though where it will pop and can distort the music.

The crackling happens when i play youtube video's or if i listen to internet radio, or use Winamp or Windows media player, and sometimes even with windows system sounds such as when you click to go into a folder.

I'm using Realtek high definition audio and recently updated the drivers hoping this would fix it, to no avail.

So basically guys, i have no idea where to go from here, and was hoping people with far more knowledge than me could help me out, if you can I'd be eternally gratef... Read more

this is really weird after my pc is on for a while like after i turn it back on from standby. My sound will be crackling when opening a file, program, website anything that uses cpu usage. Its more of a crackling sound like if i was moving around the plugs or something from the speakers. I know its not my soundcard because i tried another sound card. I put both of them in the same cab and i got about the same problem. After i restart my computer it seems to go away but i want to know whats the problem here.

Question: Sound Crackling.

Hello all,
I have a refurbished Toshiba Satellite L650D laptop that I got exactly a year ago. Lately I've been having a problem where the sound goes crackly and even distorted when playing, and up until today I thought it was just me playing sounds too early because it would always go away a few minutes after start up.

Today it stayed around for 10 minutes, before I rebooted. After that it seemed normal at first, even the startup sound wasn't distorted, but about an hour later there is still at last some crackling in my music. It doesn't just happen with window's media player, but youtube as well and it first started to show up around october when I played Skyrim (I just blamed how much memory the game takes up).

I've tried disabling the enhancements (which seemed to be the solution for most others with this problem), I have done virus scans, I have even used the task manager to end some non essential processes that took up memory.

I have noticed in my searches that most reporting similar problems found it got WORSE the longer the computer was on, while in my case it's usually at its worst around startup.

Hi guys! I have had this problem a lot of time ago... then I did a clean installation of win 10 and for a bit of time the problem seemed to be solved. My machine has been having a LOT of crackling sound in videos and music , especially on youtube since a couple of weeks and I don't know why. I did the update of bios yesterday and the crackling seemed to be even worse than before... what should I do? It's for sure a software problem. I have also tried the DPC latency checker and the back to the clean installation was working fine ; now it says I should have problems... before the value were always on the green level and now they are all yellow/red   https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8fd8FmXTIhVd2oxZG5tTmFzNmc/view?usp=sharing this is a link to the crackling I have. the sound is the same I hear, so it's not a problem of the mic I have used.  You can hear it very well at 16 seconds and so on....

Question: Crackling Sound

Hi all,

Am new to the forums so please be patient with me!

My machine is fairly old but runs Windows 7 32Bit perfectly fine. In fact I was amazed to find all the hardware is picked up fine and runs nearly as fast as XP did.

Have been using it for some time without issues but recently the sound has become what I would describe as crackly and breaks up. It happens when Windows boots and it plays the little intro tune, then when I log on its fine. Then if I play a Quicktime movie trailer for instance it crackles or Youtube etc.

My MSI motherboad doesnt have any downloadable drivers for Windows 7 so its using whatever is the defaults.

I have tried changing the sound settings to different qualities and also reducing it from 5.1 sound to 2 channel stereo but to no avail.

To make sure its not a hardware fault I have reinstalled XP and also Ubuntu with no issues at all.

I then reinstalled Windows 7 and immediately the crackling returns which puzzles me as I ran Windows 7 for months without issues.

I have also tried changing the emulation in the BIOS from AC97 to Azalia but again to no avail.

Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved.

Many Thanks

Paul.

Hi jpg, Welcome to the Forum.

It might be best if you visit your motherboard manufacturers website to download the drivers. They might not be the newest but could be specialized for your particular board.

-VIA High Definition Audio < should be a motherboard audio chipset and most likely the default audio chipset.

I'm been having trouble lately with my PC. Admittedly it is 5 years old, however I don't really have the money for a new one at the moment.

What is happening is that when I run a game that it has never had any problems with before often everything slows down and the sound starts to distort with a crackling noise. This has been most obvious in Race 07 when there is a full grid of cars around me. Everything practically stops at this point. Normally I would chalk it up to the computer not being powerful enough but it has never had this problem before in that game. It sometimes also happens when watching a HD Youtube video. Some less intensive games such as Super Meat Boy seem to be okay.

I have also had an occasional BSOD on startup, I took a photo which you can see here.

I have the system information from dxdiag here.

My guess is the graphics card is on it's way out but apart this everything else is fine so I am hoping there is a fix for this. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Crackling Sound and Lag

The BSOD is referencing nvlddmkm.dll - which is a nVidia driver file.

Go to Visual Computing Leadership from NVIDIA and update your GPU drivers for your card to see if that alleviates the issues.

unfortunately.. when I play music some of the songs crackle. (WMP)

I know this isnt interference, but seems to be a driver issue.. (so I think)
even tho the drivers are the latest version.

I plugged the speakers into the motherboard and they worked fine.

motherboard has got latest bios update (but that didnt fix the problem)

Ive looked for solutions, new drivers, fixes etc without any luck.

Ive googled this problem many times, but always find the wrong information or unanswered posts.

an example of the music crackling:

open WMP play a song, the song may crackle. if it does, press Pause, then click play, and the crackling will be gone.

Answer:Sound Distortion and Crackling

The noise problem was a common problem on Win 7, and to a lesser extent on Win 8. There isn't a "one fix" for the problem. Some of the problems can be traced to sound drivers, others to Video drivers, power supply, etc.

Suggest you download and run the Resplendence Latency Mon program. That may get you in the right area.
Resplendence Software - Advanced System Tools and Developer Components

A side note, if you are using the SoundBlaster, disable the on-board audio in the BIOS to avoid conflicts. Unlike Windows XP, newer Windows only allows one default audio playback device.

Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago I bought and downloaded a copy of the "AOS system optimizer" and after using it to 'optimize' my system it instead screwed it up big time... now my sound crackles and stutters when I play all media, online or offline, dvds, youtube, games, etc...

Technical support from them didn't solve my problem, needless to say I've asked for( and gotten) a refund from them, but I'm still stuck with this annoying problem..I've tried the usual methods, such as rolling back drivers, uninstalling all the audio drivers (Nvidia and Realtek) restarting and letting win7 reinstall them, all to no avail

Answer:Crackling and distorted sound in Win 7

The RealTek would be your PC's sound device. NVIDIA is for HDMI only. I don't know what you have for the USB device, but that may be interferring and causing some of the problems.

However, the PC "optimizer" (also know as registry repairers, PC speed up, etc) can do many things that device drivers along cannont fix. Ultimately it may take a complete reinstall to get the PC operating fully and properly.

The first thing, is the USB device, disconnect it temporarily, restart the PC and see if that makes any difference. Also, if you are not using the Acer supplied RealTek sound driver, get that and install it. Generally the PC Vendor's driver is the preferred driver.

All setups have the static. It seems to be an issue with the sound card or the computer. It isn't any of my wires to the speakers, as I have gone from the sound card directly to the speakers. Could it be static electricity from the winter being so dry? I've never experienced this in the winter before though. what can i do to diagnose and fix the problem? Thanks!

I had crackling sound problem in my old computer, and now after building new one it still exist. All parts are new except RAM.

When I watch video without pausing it there wont be any crackling, if i pause/play it fast there will be popping/crackling sound. Problem is pretty bad in Mumble/teamspeak when there is few people speaking, same in many games when there is many different audio sources to play. Crackling and popping really makes gaming with friends annoying...

I have tried different headphones, fresh install windows, new audio drivers.

Here is few videos I recorded (using speakers)
in this video i turn volume completely off and then back on

and this i only adjust volume low/high (pretty fast)

In the last few months, I have noticed my sound crackling. I kept thinking I had fixed the problem, but I have finally figured out that the crackling returns whenever I restart my computer. Restarting my computer again may or may not fix the problem until the next restart. I have been having to restart about 3~5 times to get my computer to run without crackling.

I have Google'd and found many other very similar sound crackling issues reported by other users. None of the solutions have worked for me, and none of them discuss the "random after restart" symptom I have described.

I can test to see if my sound is crackling by playing sound while my Steam library is open. I had thought the problem was just Steam, but I can still hear some crackling without ever launching Steam, but using Steam is the easiest way for me to test for crackling. If I do hear crackling nothing I do makes it go away (I just have to restart and cross my fingers), and if I don't hear crackling, I never do until my machine is restarted again.

When the sound is crackling, I have also noticed some issues with video playback, the video will speed up and slow down and sometimes freeze. hi folks i hope you can help me.

so i have been messing around with my pc over the past couple of days and seemed to have done something. i have been playing the RMclock, undervolting my cpu which seems to be going great, but also i have been in services.msc disabling bits and bobs i dont need. so i didnt disable anything major but i my sound is crackling. it only crackles it seems when itunes is maximised on the screen, if i minimise it to the bar then crackling stops. also it crackles a little bit when i minimised anything else or highlight a button or something graphics related. when i slide the volume slider in the task bar up and down it crackles very softly.

weird. so any ideas what i might have done? i have turned off all underclocking software and reset my cpu to its normal power and speed. no change. no gpu clocking on either.

thanks in advance.

Hi, I have had my X-540's for a a while but they have one problem. They make a crackling noise if the games audio settings are not turned down. It applies to everything really... Music, games, anything. I can't have winamp at 100% or else they crack and I was playing UT3 and the game's volume setting was at 60% and it was still cracking very bad at some times. I have a VIA HD audio card built into my ASUS M4A77D mobo. Driver version 6.0.1.7600 if that helps at all. One weird thing is that I cannot get it to utilize my 5.1 sound system properly. I have to keep it on 2.1 sound to make it sound the closest to normal. (I still have 5.1 sound) Really starting to not like VIA..

I have a strange problem with sound outputs. It affetcs all sound outputs (itunes, movies and games).

The sound 'crackles'/skips. It seems to be related to computer / internet activity ongoing while listening to a song etc.

For the first few hours after re-boot all is fine and I can run loads of programmes without affecting the sound. After a few hours (maybe 6) it starts but infrequently (3x a minute) with very small skips, after about 24 hrs it's got so bad that things are unlisteneable - literally!.

Once the problem has started I've tried turning all other programmes off but it makes no difference

It's not the heaphones and I've tried with speakers / other phones and it's still there.

I've checked the sound thing drivers (realtek) and updated, it doesn't seem related to any particular combination of programmes or computer activities but the fact it gets worse over time is a constant.

It's a Compac machine only 6 months old and has no other issues I'm aware of

I'm now restarting the machine every 12 hours or so or using it without music.

Any ideas suggestions etc much appreciated

All right, so my sound is popping at loud frequencies. For example, if I click on my volume adjuster to hear the different sample levels, little pops and crackles can be heard. I was starting to notice some crackling when I got the Logitech g35. Thinking the g35 was faulty, I got a refund and a got a sound card (Xonar DX) and a non-usb headset (MMX 300). I first noticed the crackles on the system sounds at this moment. So I tried all kind of different drivers for the xonar. But to no avail, the problem still occurred on headphones and speakers. Then I removed my graphic card, the soundcard, all kinds of usb ports, and the sound popping is still happening on the on-board sound which I had never noticed until the g35. So, thinking maybe I had messed some windows file, I reinstalled windows 8 and reset the BIOS. The crackling is still there. I also tried using one of each ram sticks.

This is really frustrating! I am a competitive COD player and the season has already started. Please help me

Answer:Sound Popping/Crackling

Popping and crackling has been an issue with some. Wi-Fi is one known cause. Old drivers are another, for both the sound and video. Some system monitor and configuration programs can also cause this. The is no "one fix", from what I've seen - on the Windows 7 forum and the Dell users forum. Its not as prevalent as it was but there are still occasional reports of problems.

Sadly, the DPC Latency Checker is not valid for Windows 8 so that very useful tool for trying to track the problem down, can't be used.

Hey there. Some music programs I use the music comes out distorted, cracking when using features. I tried everything, update, reinstall previous drivers etc.Dunno whats wrong. I have an on-board sound card AC'97.Can someone give me a suggestion why its happening?

Answer:Sound Crackling in some programs.

It sounds like the on-board sound card is on its way out, sound cards are pretty cheap. You should be able to pick one up for less than a tenner, of course that depends on the quality of the sound card that you want.

Hi everyone.

I am posting this as last resort. Recently i upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 Ultimate edition and got a problem i ve seen for the 1st time in my life.

Problem was Crackling sound that sounds like some kind of static electricity that is mixing with normal sounds. I ve searched a lot through net to see if theres any solution to this issue. What i found is that ppl have similliar problem to mine but not exactly same. Other ppl complaining about that crackling during audio playback while they are watching movies and listening music, but that is not for me...

I can normaly watch movies and listen to music, but problem occurs when i start any game on my PC. Symptoms are next...

Every time i start game (Call of duty Modern Warfare 2) sounds starts to crackle, slow down and game becomes graphicaly laggy...

Then i found another way to test if sound and system are ok...

When i start GOM player and start to rapidly press ENTER button, to go IN and OUT full screen i notice that sound starts to crackle and system to slow down making full screen to window screen so laggy that even when i stop pressing ENTER it still continues to expand and restore full screen...

Last night i cleaned a bit of PSU from dust, but ive noticed theres some on CPU cooler, GPU cooler and, PSU air intake cooler... I ve played for like 30 mins and crackling was gone, i rebooted after that and crackling was back...

This morning i did total clearing of PSU, CPU and GPU coolers nad so far i... Read more

Hi team

I have a surroundsound system which I've plugged into my speaker/headphone output.

I don't expect it to work in full surround sound put when i put it into surroundsound mode the extra speakers crackle and then cut out, and the whole system stops making any noise. It only works with surround sound feature disabled on the soundsystem.

I have looked into the sound settings on my laptop and it doesn't give me the option of any satellite speakers, that box is just greyed out.

Does anyone who knows more than me about sound systems (not very difficult) know how I can make use of my extra speakers?

Cheers

I have logitech speakers and subwoofer which appears OK. Would welcome any suggestions. So called "geek" in local pub suggests installing sound card and switching oft builkt in audio set up Any views? Welcome suggestions/advice please. dave

Answer:sound distorted and crackling

That is a pretty old system; at least 3 generations of intel cpu. As to what is causing the problem, it can be a failing audio chip on the board, corrupted drivers, etc.

You can remove all audio drivers and install the driver from realtek and see if that helps.

I assume you have already checked speaker connections and tried the speakers on another system to see if it is a speaker problem or a problem with your system.

As for buying a sound card and disabling the onboard sound, that is fine however I would not be putting too much money into that old of a system. Do not buy one of the expensive creative sound cards; just get a basic one from newegg.

If it was the updated driver that is causing the problem, you can go to the Device Manager and in the Properties for your sound device you can click on the Driver tab and the select the option to "Rollback Driver" which will revert it back to the old driver.
