"BIOS Load fail!" error message on startup. How to fix?

Question: "BIOS Load fail!" error message on startup. How to fix?

after still not having the Screen freeze and a Sound-loop problem fixed, I'm getting a error message on my windows startup.
THIS is the error message. Sometimes the error message appears once, or twice. I'm starting to see this message since yesterday. Is there anything to fix this? And what's its cause?
HERE are my specs if anyone needs them. Ask if you need some more info :3

Preferred Solution: "BIOS Load fail!" error message on startup. How to fix?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I've recently been trying to download and install Windows Live Mail. That part was easy, however, upon opening the program, I receive error messages. The first one says, "Sorry, something unexpected happened and Windows Live Mail must close, your most recent changes may not be saved." Then another error box is displayed stating, "Contacts failed to load. Windows Live Mail is incorrectly configured, please re-install." I've uninstalled and reinstalled this program several times, but still not sure why I am receiving these errors. I did edit the registry, deleting the keys for all Windows Live folders insuring a complete uninstall, then reinstalled a fresh download of Windows Live Mail but STILL got the same error messages. I also tried to clear the Live Contacts Store/Cache by renaming the Live contacts folder so a new one would be replaced. Still nothing...This is getting frustrating...Anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks!

I have a Mustek 600 III EP Plus parallel port scanner that I am trying to install to a Dell Optiplex GX260. The scanner was working fine on my "old" computer. I have researched and read several suggestions; none of which helped. I have checked and ECP mode is enabled. When I try to use it, I get the message " fail load". When I go to scanners and cameras, it does not appear there. It shows no scanner at all. I have reinstalled it 3 times. I hope some one has the solution to this. I also downloaded a new driver.

Answer:Scanner message "fail load"

What OS are you running? Have you got the right drivers for that OS? Is it the same OS as on the old computer? In particular, have you moved from Windows 98/ME to Windows 2000/XP/Vista? parallel port scanners are pretty old nowadays, I had an Agfa one about 7 years ago, it never worked properly with XP, kept vanishing. I think you may have to bite the bullet and get a modern scanner. That Mustek was a new model some time around 1996!

Hey all,

I recently re-installed Windows XP Home edition. I found that i needed to install Service Pack 3, so i downloaded that and installed it. It seemed to be working okay.

THEN i installed the Gigabyte CD that came with my computer years ago, which supposedly has a lot of drivers on it that i might need.

*Every time it starts up, it pops up the message "Could not load PROSetGUIMgrResource DLL",
*Every time i go into Control Panel, and click on anything there, it pops up the message "Intel(R) PROSet: Resources are not available",
*When i scroll in a window, it moves agonizingly slowly,
*When i move a window around on the screen, it leaves behind a "trail".

Can anybody offer any help?

ever since i (partially) installed an Audigy sound card, i get a message that reads "No drive attached to FasTrak controller, the BIOS is not installed" every time i boot up. this is annoying, but not too annoying, because it is only ther for about 2 seconds.

far more annoying is that ever since i upgraded Netscape 7.0 to 7.1, the Program Files folder opens up at startup. what makes it annoying is that i have to close it each and every time i boot up.

any help with stopping either of these unwanted occurrences would be much appreciated.

On startup I get a popup window labeled "RUN DLL" with the following message:

"Error loading C:\PROGRAM~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\M3PLUGIN.DLL

The specified module could not be found."

I've done AV and multiple spyware scans, plus the usual ATF Cleaner runs at regular intervals, and this still comes up on bootup. It seems to indicate that whatever weird file it is can't find something else it needs to run, but given that the kids use this system and frequent sites like MySpace and Facebook, it's a little creepy.

Hey Guys,

Just recently I have being receiving error messages when I start up my laptop every day.
There has never been any problems with my laptop until now, although it doesn't really affect the laptop at all it still pops up?

I get an error message when I move to the desktop that says "BIOS Load Fail" but then i can close it and nothing happens to my computer. I am running Windows 8.1 and I just installed the new Toshiba Service Station Apps. I also checked to see if the BIOS was up to date, and it was.

Any help here? It would be much appreciated, thanks.

Just an update: I just tried to open up my GPU tweaking software, and it can't open because the Error Message shows up. But my CPU monitor still works.

> I get an error message when I move to the desktop that says "BIOS Load Fail" but then i can close it and nothing happens to my computer. I am running Windows 8.1 and I just installed the new Toshiba Service Station Apps

Could it be possible that this alert (message) is coming from the Service Station utility?

The service station software allows your computer to automatically search for TOSHIBA software updates or other alerts from toshiba that are specific to your computer system and its programs. When enabled, this application periodically transmits to our servers a limited amount of system information required to perform these updates or alerts.

Probably the message ?BIOS load fail? means that service station was not able to download (load) the information about the latest available BIOS.
From my point of few this is not a serious problem. If you want try to uninstall the service station tool from the system just to check if this would cancel the notification

Hey Guys, first of all Hi to everyone on the forums, its my first post!
Basically I have had this problem for a pretty long time now, every time I turn the computer on I get the message

> New CPU Installed! Please enter SETUP to configure your system.
> Press F1 to Run Setup
> Press F2 to load default values and continue

My computer works fine, its just annoying to have to press F2 all the time.
This started happening when I re-attached my whole motherboard onto a new case about 3 months ago. Everything works fine, but I get that message every time I
boot up the computer, and have to press F2 all the time. I tried switching the CMOS Jumpers from position 1-2 to 2-3 for 10 seconds like the motherboard manual told me,
plugged the cord back in, booted up but still the same problem..
I googled this matter, but there wasn't really anyone who had had the same problem as me. It seems like a rare problem.. My motherboard is a P4P800. What do you guys think?

Hello, I just purchased some new RAM (Kingston PC3200 1GB DDR 400MHz)

I added the RAM into an available slot but it will not start now.
I have a Gigabyte nForce3 mobo with an AMD Athlon 64 Processor.
Windows XP Home SP2

Before I had this setup and it worked with 1 Card in the 1st slot and the second in the 3rd slot (4 Total Slots)

512mb Kingston PC3200 DDR 200 (has the little black box's on one side only)
512mb Kingston PC3200 DDR 200

Then I tried to add my 1GB Kingston PC3200 DDR 400 module into one of the free slots, resulting in BIOS giving the DRAM Error. I tried many configurations but it seems that I cannot have 2 RAM cards right next to each other.

-1GB Kingston PC3200 DDR 400
-512mb Kingston PC3200 DDR 200

Is what im using right now, and its fine but thats only 1.5 GB of RAM and I would be able to fully use the RAM I purchased.
It can't be an incompatibility problem since I Can in fact use either of my 512mb Cards with the new 1GB card, they just won't work with all 3 at once.

How can I get my full 2GB to work?
4 RAM slots = 4 RAM cards usable right?
If any other information is required please let me know.

Had a sudden inability to go much further than a third or forth-level download on ANY given webpage and then PC would seize-up, requiring "cont+alt+del" in order to get freed-up. Thought perhaps I picked-up a bug of some sort during a recent google search, and went immediately to Panda and Trendmicro to perform both virus as well as malware scans. While the Panda scan was loading-up, I received the following error message....

... " DoPatch....dll reports error....Error "C:\WINNT\patch.utp"....unreadable or not a patch file..."

Was able to complete both scans. Nothing found other than tracking cookies.

I then did a file serch for the above and located it. It was installed TODAY apparently, and not by me, within minutes of the problem starting.

I'm guessing someone/thing slipped this patch into my WINNT file or modified it while I was doing the google search, so I have included a HJT scan below.

Hope this all makes sense and ties-out to something. Any help would be genuinely appreciated-

My computer gets the following Error Message everytime I try to go on Fire Fox, Restore to an ealier date, go to a website from a web address in an email in Outlook Express, download certain software or downloads:

XUL Runner
Errorlatform version is not compatible with min version>= max version<= .

I am able, however, to get on the Internet with Internet Explorer. When I Clean the Disk, the number value of stuff to erase increases rather than get wipped out. It is now up over 300,000 MB's. It slowly started at 25 MB's and has grown very, very slowly. I Clean the Disk and Degfrag every time I use the computer.

My system is a Dell Dimension 3000 using Windows XP Home Edition.

This ubiquitous error message constantly pops up and blocks me from doing certain things. I have tried Restoring the computer to an earlier date. I have used the Dell drivers to try to clean the hard drive, but I am blocked.

I first noticed this in early November 2008. The Verizon Anti-Virus System did nothing to alert me to any viruses.

I have spent a good amount of time trying to solve the problem, but it is out of my knowledge of information.

Any help is appreciated.

Ok let us start simply
This may just be a corrupted install of firefox or and incompatability issue with a add-on.

Some Firefox issues can be resolved by downloading a new Firefox installer from and then closing Firefox, deleting the Firefox installation directory and reinstalling Firefox. (On a typical Windows install, you would delete the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder and then reinstall Firefox using the "Standard" Setup Type.) Another option would be to uninstall Firefox and then reinstall into a different folder location, which is done using the "Custom" Setup Type on Windows and choosing a different Destination Folder for the install location (e.g., C:\Program Files\Firefox3). [3]

or for a completely clean install of FF

* First, download an official version of Firefox from (or download Firefox 2 if your system can't run the current version) and save it to your desktop or other location. Avoid unofficial download sites that bundle Firefox with other software such as the Google Toolbar.
* Next, completely uninstall your current version of Firefox as outlined in Uninstalling Firefox. (Note that removing the Firefox installation directory will also fix some problems related to old or incompatible browser plugins on Windows systems, by removing plugin files that may be contained in the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins folder.)

as described in the title when i boot my laptop:
i get the "disk read error -> press cntrl alt del to restart" message. I then tried to access the backup partition through f10 only to run into this error "status : 0xc00000e9 Info : an unexpected I/O error has occurred" it seems that it cant communicate with my hard drive.

I read a few other forum posts but didnt see anyone have the 0xc00000e9 error also. Bios boot priorities are in order if that matters.

Is there a fix without having to replace the entire HD and buy a new vista installation(preinstalled w/ no disc in the box).

Im very reluctant to take it to a service center as i can very likely fix it myself (with the help of the friendly people here of course), only problem is im having a little trouble..finding.. my HD in this damn notebook.. heh, ill figure that part out. new to notebook repair.

Thanks in advance. Danny

edit: found the HD, doesnt look like it even uses a cable, just plugs right into what i assume is the mb. dont know if that helps just supplying what i can.

My roommate recently put together a new computer, However, upon power up, we receive "DISK BOOT FAILURE." BIOS recognizes both the CD-Rom and the HDD correctly as SATA 0 and 1 (we've tried placing them in 1 and 2 also), but no go. We've also switched around the boot order, and no go there also. During power up the mobo says "Detecting drives: No Drives Found" or something similar for about half a second, but it's hard to read as it's fast.

Any idea what could be done to fix this? Any and all help is appreciated!

The mobo is EVGA X58 and the CD-Rom and HDD are both Samsung.

I was messing with my ASUS N10j and I tried to install Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit on it.

Installation went fine, but then when it wanted to boot up for the first time, it gave me a window that said "Can not open recovery.dat" and a huge red ERROR message appeared in the middle of the screen.

From googling, these guys ( believe its because of a hidden recovery partition. Well, how do I delete that partition if I don't have access to Windows?

The laptop also doesn't have a DVD-drive, so the solution has to be via USB.

I have no clue what to do. Help!

EDIT: Ugh... I guess this is more software related... Sorry.

Answer:Red "ERROR" message because "Can not open file C:Recovery.dat"

Greetings, RommelTJ...

Couple of things you might consider trying:

* Boot to a Linux USB drive, and format your hard drive from that environment - tips on how to create a Mint 7 (Gloria) bootable flash drive can be found here...

* Get your hands on a USB DVD drive, and use it to boot to your Windows disk to delete/recreate any partitions...

hello to all.
i have this computer about 3 years or more and as its old i usually run optimization apps and cleanups every month.
i cleaned the drives, defragmented them and other options until i get to disk check( i use boost speed program).
i marked all and started the scan.
"C" was postponed until next start and my "D" too cuz its my program drive and boost speed was in it, all other drives finished scan and fixing.
i forgot to restart last night and this morning i just remembered that i forgot to put something in my usb drive for my school so started my pc and i saw that scanning "C", it was taking a time and i had no time so i hold the shutdown button for 5sec and i started again, but i saw scanning "D" i thought it will take no time but it was the same so i wait until 17% and did the same thing and started again.
i didnt noticed it that time but when now i tried to complete my optimization i saw the "my computer" windows and the task bar as like this:

i try to open the drive and i see an error saying: "D:\ is not accessible Access is denied."
i tried sfc \scannow and it said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them"
the output of it was a 12mg text file so i uploaded it in the link below cuz maybe it might be helpfull:
i also tried to disk check again but it stucks at the 17% that i shutdown(waited for 30 mins).
how i can restore my drive "D"?
(... Read more

Answer:Drive "D" load fail

Since you cancelled the scan prematurely, twice, it's very likely that resulted in more filesystem corruption -- which then makes it likely that you're NOT going to be able to recover the files that got damaged. You should NEVER cancel a filesystem check part way through!

What MIGHT work, is if you installed the free version of "recuva" and then ran it to see if it can find the files you want to restore. But, it's not going to repair damaged files.

Hi y'all,

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem, so if I am in the wrong place, I apologize. I cannot access a photo file folder that is on an external hard drive. Depending on how I try to get to the file, I get either a "corrupt file" message or "i/o error message". I cannot delete the folder, cannot move the folder, and I can't do a defrag on that hard drive because of the folder. Chkdsk did not show any problems with the hard drive. I have just gone through the deep cleaning as listed on this forum, but nothing out of the way showed up on my external hard drive. I would appreciate any help with solving this problem. Stats: hp pavilion760N, win xp, service pack 2, seabolt external 160 gigharddrive with 45gig free. Thanks, Diane

Answer:get either "file corrupted" or "i/o error message"

Does the error message arise when you access the file or the folder? If it is only the file, then I would recommend getting everything else off of the external temporarily and then getting a tool from the external drive vendor to reformat. You lose the file but regain the drive.

I had downloaded a spyware program and backed up first, but cannot upload the back up due the problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am on my desktop, so can receive email. Thank you,

"A problem caused [name of program] to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." But no solution shows. I have been using the same HP Pavilion tx1000 for a year and a half with no software or compatibility issues. I run Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1 - 32 bit. Slowly this message began to appear with every microsoft program I opened and then started to spread to non microsoft programs. I tried reinstalling the programs, doing a system restore to the oldest restore point I could, I also tried uninstalling any window updates that were installed right before my problems. I have read some strings that indicate it may be a compatibility issue between the service pack 1 and vista but the service pack came with the computer and it has been working fine until recently. I am at loss what to try next. Has anyone using Vista Home Home Premium experience anything like this!!!

This is driving me bonkers and I have almost no hair left. I really hope someone can help.

When I attempt to copy or move a file or folder from my Win7 box to my WinXP (SP3) media server, the operation nearly always fails. Take, for example, my trying to copy the VLC Media Player folder (704 files, 75.1 MB) from Program Files on Win7 to the C: drive on the media server via a mapped drive (X). In all cases, after hanging up at some point during the copy, I get this message:

Network Error
There is a problem accessing X:\<whatever current sub-folder copying is>
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again

I should note here that you only see the message come up if you wait for it (~1 min) after the copy hangs. If you try to cancel the hung copy before the message comes up, you can crash explorer.exe. I must also stress that there are no other access problems on the network. Files on the media server are accessible as expected from the Win7 box. Performing the same copy in reverse ("pulling" the same folder to the XP box from its console instead of "pushing" from Win7) works perfectly. All machines are in WORKGROUP and the same exact credentials are in use on all machines. All machines run the same version of Symantec Endpoint Protection and have firewall rules configured to allow all LAN traffic. All machines are connected through a Linksys SD2005 5-port GB "dumb" switch. Routing/DHCP is provided by a D-Link DI-604. ... Read more

I just upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Win7 professional x64 hoping to fix the above mentioned problem. After a complete re-install Im getting the same errors.

Im not sure of the proper terminology here, but during startup the computer does a scan of all hardware and "Volume 0" has a "failed" message.

The odd thing is that sometimes after a few restarts and pointless boot menu visits the computer starts up fine.

I tried windows repair feature by booting from the disk, but when I get to the window where i select the operating system to repair, its empty. Drive C, where the operating system is, is not showing.

I have a feeling that the hard drive itself has gone bad and is very unstable. Please let me know if I'm missing something or we just need to get a new HD.

Thank you

Answer:Win7 pro startup error "Boot MGR missing"/"Operating System Not Found

What type of hdd do you have. For example if you have a Seagate drive, there is software you can run to do a diagonostic on the hdd before the operating system boots.
This would be a good idea, especially if you were having same issues when Vista Home Premium was installed first.

Do you have more than one hdd installed. If yes, make sure in BIOS settings, the proper drive is selected for First Boot. And better yet make sure its the only drive attached when booting.

I realize that I posted this thread previously, but I see that I had erroneously created it in the inappropriate forum (Windows Vista). However, the user "Macboatmaster" was kind and patient enough to provide me with assistance there, though I am still waiting on his following procedures.

In the meantime, as this is the Windows XP forum (my operating system is Windows XP), I wanted to formally post my dilemma here as well, as I thought that I may acquire more feedback. Here is the problem that I am facing, along with what Macboatmaster already suggested:

-I recently encountered some trouble on my pc (a BENQ) with respect to starting it up. During a recent system restore, a power failure occurred, and ever since I attempted to boot the computer, I receive the following error just before the desktop appears:

"Explorer.EXE - Unable To Locate Component: This application has failed to start because WININET.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem."

This error prevents me from accessing anything on my desktop (i.e. task bar, icons, etc.) - only the desktop background appears, and all that I have access to is the Task Manager (Control+Alt+Delete). Control+Escape does not allow me to have access to the Start menu. I receive the same error just before I get into the cmd prompt, but it appears that I am still able to use it.

What has been already attempted (Macboatmaster's suggestion):

Went to Task Manager >New ... Read more

Hi all,

BSOD once tonight. It happened one other time last week but everything on Windows still functioned normally after I restarted. Then it happened again tonight. I restarted and when the start-up 'dos' -like screen comes up, I also had a glimpse of a message in red type that mentioned something about a 'degraded drive' and something about 'completeness...'. Then the screen flipped and asked me to go in safe mode etc. But I chose to start normally and Windows started fine.

Hope someone can help me out. I'm not that fluent in computer technology/software these days. Thanks for this forum!

Answer:BSOD, load-up message read "Degraded drive..."

Please remove this driver/app. It is dtsoftbus01.sys Virtual Bus Driver from DT Soft Ltd

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (probably a driver).
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have raid update its Driver.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Driver verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to ano... Read more

Just loaded Windows 10 on my third system [trial]. This is a mainstream corporate grade Dell Optiplex desktop.
I got errors I have not seen on any previous Windows 10 install. Everything looked fairly normal until - while I was away with real life - I am supposing it downloaded some more updates, after which, when I saw it again, I had a "your system encountered errors" message with "restarting" frozen. Error was "Kernel Security" check failure.

AFterward, it never successfully ran again. No BSOD or black screen, just stuck in that same cycle - load windows, encounter Kernel Security problem, gather data, "restart" which fails to restart. Power-down.

I finally reverted back to Win7 but would like to find the debris trail and figure out what went wrong.
Would a log be stored in the -~BT folder somewhere ??

Answer:"Kernel Security Fail" loop. Where's the error log? Repair option?

It depends on several things. How did you install 7 and what's left of the 10 install?

The BT folder would likely have some info - if not overwritten by the 7 install. I'll have to take a better look this PM/ torrow AM as I'm at work now and am posting from my phone

The system is a Dell 2350, Wind XP, Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 HD.
I had to do a restart because I just loaded a software. When restarting as it got to the point where you choose the user you want to get in as, it froze. I could not do anything for a while. I did Ctrl+Alt+Del and then had to turn it off manually. Upon starting it again it told me that a certain Kernell file was in error or missing. Had to manually start again. From this point on every time I start it I get "Primary Master Hard Disk Fail" It gives me the option of F2 for setup or F1 to continue. F1 does not get me anywhere, and ultimately I get back at the same spot.
-I have tried on a different cable, hoping that was it. I have tried every jumper position on the HD.
-I have tried a HD auto-detection but it does not detect it. However at the screen where I get the error it lists the HD as Maxtor N40P
-I have tried to boot from floppy (I made a diskette form and that does not work either.
I did some research on this HD and according to some similar symptoms have been experienced before by other users. (
Everything seems to indicate that the HD is gone pretty much, unless one of you guys can help with any idea or previous experience you may have had.

I have an older Maxtor DiamondMax (8GB) that fails to initialize every once in a while, and reports itself as a Maxtor Millenium -- whatever that is. I've no idea why the Maxtors misidentify themselves under those circumstances.

In my case, it seems to have been a flaky cable connection -- removing and re-seating the cables attached to the drive seems to have made the problem go away. At least for the time being, anyway.

Does that mean you were unable to access the drive in any way after booting from the floppy?

If the drive is not recognized by the BIOS on boot-up, that would be what I would expect. If that's the case, you might try making sure that your BIOS has the appropriate settings for that drive, then booting from a floppy. I'm not optimistic, but I think it's worth a try.

Hi Brink and all at TenForums,
I find this error on a google search, but not on this forum, but always have seen quality from these forums. Soooo my trusty home brew build, stable for 8months, running Win10, had also been following a routine of boot drive image backup and creating maintenance boot dvd's between Win 10 version upgrades. today booted as normal, POST is fine Win10 hourglass begins, runs circa 5 seconds, then a blue screen (not BSOD, the Win10 variety with ":-)" on it. The error is "SECURITY_INITIALIZATION_FAILED" (verbatim with the error, including Caps and underscores", but no normal, but non-sensical, hex-code to go along with it. One further sentence of info follows, saying "You can reboot" and "you can search for the error". Cool reboot came back to the same screen. Second cold boot I had "Automatic Recovery Starting", but hung shortly after". My "Boot Recovery Disks" generated from Control Panel, won't boot, with the good old DOS "Non-system disk or disk error".

I haven't yet fully taken in the issues / tried standard fixes, this my first "reaching out" for help. Hoping for a fast-track to resolution at best, how to get to my boot-image on the second hdd, at worst!

Thank you in advance, if I have any joy inbetween, will update

(apologies for posting to this forum, but not quite sure where it sits, because of "security" error, non-BSOD etc)

Hi, I'm new to the forums. I had 2 paritions on my other (main) computer which were one 75 gigabyte partition which was my primary partition with the OS (Windows XP) installed and a second one which is 5 gigabytes which I previously had when my computer was bought. The 5 gigabyte partition is on the same hard drive and it had no files in it when I partitioned it using the software Power Quest partition magic. It said that everything went fine after it merged both drives and it said press any key to restart. So I pressed a key and it restarted but soon it went to a blank black page with the blinking bar on the top left. I waited for an hour and nothing loaded so I pressed the power button and it IMMEDIATELY shut down. When I restarted my computer it gave me the error "Floppy Disk(s) Fail (40)". I tried to enter BIOS setup and disable the floppy disk drive, change the bootable disk list and changed the first boot option from "Removable" to "Disable" because I assumed it wouldn't check for the floppy drive but it did. My bootable disk list was:

3)Hard Drive

I was just wondering if anyone has any idea why it's giving me this error and how I can fix it because I have alot of imporant files on that hard drive and I really don't want to lose them. Plus I have my Virtual School's final project due on Wednesday and it took me a month to work on it and it's on my hard drive. Thank you again.

I'm able to fix the problem with a repair installation of Windows, but after restarting Windows a few times, the error returns and I'm unable to startup Windows until I perform another repair installation.

Things I have tried:

-ran SFC /scannow to replace any missing files using the Windows CD, did not prevent error from happening again

Have not tried reformatting, would like to avoid that if possible.

Hello, I hope I am posting this in the right thread. I have a Toshiba satellite laptop with windows xp. Recently, at startup I started receiving a message that says" One or more modules failed to load." "This process will be terminated." For instance, Adobe Photoshop says they a registry file is missing, please reinstall. Another program says something about a runtime error. I can't even open my Norton anti virus software. This is so frustrating, does anyone know what could have happened and how I can fix this problem? My guess would be some sort of virus, but I really have no clue. Please help!! Thanks

I went into the BIOS thinking i could fix it by going "Load Startup Defaults"

and now when it starts up it beeps and gives me this:

And nothing is working!

Windows starts up normally but there is no sound, no network connection and i can't do anything!

My mouse and keyboard isn't even working.

I can't even access the BIOS, or boot from cd. My computer is now pretty much a huge doorstop :(

Answer:Went to "load system defaults" in BIOS and now nothing is working.

Hi, looks like the CMOS got scrambled. You will need to open the tower and access the CMOS battery now there are usually jumpers that let you reset , however there is another way just take out the battery leave out for around 2 mins then put it back. This resets the BIOS to defaults and you should be OK. ( CMOS battery is a small silver disk around the size of a dime ). Make sure all power is OFF and you are on an anti static surface (wooden table is OK, anti static wrist band helps)

"No Audio Devices" in XP -- Load everything on STARTUP

My audio devices had suddenly disappeared, after a sound problem, apparently originating with a Ubisoft CD game. The control panel showed "No audio devices" and only greyed-out features at SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES. Under device manager, the components were all supposedly working and no conflicts. I searched this problem all over the net and tried most suggestions--except major reinstalls. I tried the fixes for known conflicts with the software and XP.

I STRONGLY URGE that you work through the STARTUP. Run msconfig and make sure to have everything loaded on startup. In my case, something had apparently turned off one or more of the audio programs or devices. After turning everything on in the Startup menu, my devices and software all loaded and the SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES options were available again.

I did this after manually deleting all the registry entries, programs, and files associated with the Ubisoft game; maybe that was necessary, maybe not.

Good luck!!

And does anyone know WHY Outlook has to "load" these files at start up? I have 3 years worth of emails in my Netscape mail but that never slowed down the launch of the program. Doe does Outlook load these files into RAM memory?

Hi guys,

I'm very new to forums and not very good with pc technical stuff so hoping you guys out there can throw me a rope !

All of a sudden, my pc now has this small message box load when it gets to the desktop which says

"The path is not of a legal form."

I have searched everywhere on the net to find something that might be able to help diagnose what is causing this but to no avail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am using Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate.

Answer:Windows 7 Startup Message "The path is not of a legal form."

Hi Icey............

It means that something on your computer is misconfigured.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you what because it really depends on where the message is coming from (which is often in the title bar of the message box) or on the actual path that it's complaining about. For example, it may very included the path (that it says is not of a legal form) in the message that complains of the path not being of a legal form.

What does it mean?

So, I can't really answer to where it's coming from or even what to do about it. But I can at least talk a little bit about what it means for a path to be of a legal form.

A "path," first of all, is the string that identifies where on your computer a file lives.

For example, if you have a file in a folder called My Documents at the root of your C drive and the document's name is "document.doc," then the full path for that would be C:/MyDocuments/document.doc.

That gives every bit of information to locate that file on your hard disk:

C: is the drive.
My Documents is the folder.
Document.doc is the file.
That's a path.

Legal forms

Now, that of course (what I just described) has what I consider to be "a legal form."

The problem is that there are characters that are not allowed to be used in file names and in folder names or they are more difficult to use in file names and folder names and, if used improperly, will cause this kind of message.

For example, you would be hard pressed to create a fil... Read more

I then press F1 and startup continues and device operates fine, however I am concerned that something needs repair.
I ran the diagnostics app on the site and the report (14 pages) is attached. The CMOS, CPU and hard drive passed all tests.
Any suggestions?

Hi All,

I just booted up a brand new PC this morning with Windows 10 installed. I can connect to the internet via WIFI but when using any of my 2 browsers (Edge & Firefox) neither of them will load any pages. Edge did initially after a few mins of loading but now won't at all.

When I troubleshoot (right clicking the Wifi icon) I get this error message: "The device or resource ( is not set up to accept connections on port "The World Wide Web (HTTP)"

I tried changing DNS settings (didn't work) So I found this solution posted by Microsoft:

a. Open Internet Explorer 10 desktop version.
b. Click on Tools and select Internet Options.
c. Click on the Connections tab and click on LAN Settings button.
d. Uncheck the option: Automatically detect settings, then click on OK to exit the window.
e. Click on OK again to save the settings and exit the Internet Options window.
f. Restart the computer and check if the issue is resolved.

I couldn't find these options in Microsoft Edge so I opened Internet Options in Windows 10 and did it there... but no joy. I've also disabled proxies in Firefox which had no effect.

I'm on a UPC Horizon Box, WIFI connection, 300mps with a strong connection (full bars). I'm typing this on my other laptop which has no connections issues at all.

Any ideas on how I can resolve this?? It's driving me nuts!!

"Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I started getting this message everytime I start my computer up (Vista). I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with the fact that I got a Trojan yesterday and deleted it with Windows Defender. I'm guessing the trojan attached itself to the file that was deleted and now I need to somehow get that file back. Doing some googling showed that most people that got this error message was a result of installing a specific program like Nero or video editing program, I didn't see a solution to the specific problem that I'm facing. Suggestions?

When I try to run any item in my start menu (or Windows > Start Menu > Programs), I get a "Do you want to open this file?" warning for the .lnk. There is no option to check "always open for this type of file." This also happens on startup, for each item in Windows > Start Menu.

Items pinned to the task bar, or shortcuts in any other place, do not have this problem.

I have my UAC slider set to the lowest setting. I have Home Premium, so there is no gpedit.msc.

Any advice would be appreciated...

So yesterday i moved my computer to a different location in my house, and when i first turn it on i get this error message.
(For those who don't want to see the pic)
Overclocking failed! Please enter Setup to re-configure your system. Press F1 to run setup

What was also weird, is that when i turned it on, everything started up for like 3 seconds, (Could tell by the noise of the fans) it stopped, it started up again, then stopped, and then after 4 or 5 times it finally booted up to this screen.

What i did was just enter setup and manually boot from my SSD, and it booted up fine normally. Would someone mind telling me what is wrong and how do i fix it?

Answer:"Overclocking failed!" Message at computer startup

It could be a host of things.
I would make sure nothing has been jarred loose and then set the bios back to default and run it a couple of days. If no problems arise put you known good over clock back.

Make sure your main power cord from the wall to power supply (surge protector) is seated correctly.

It seems that in Europe this old topic:

My wifi rooter was in block. Solving this I got today (04-06-2015) message box in Win7 do I allow to make changes:
"C:\Windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe" /c

Unfortunately printscreen won't work for this message box, but I got it 3...4 times with same question. I answered no. And also got "" or "SensePlus" advertise/browser hijack worm/virus.

Be carefull - Windows Defender...or what ever this is called don't recognise this SensePlus thing and tells that everithing is clean.

Also added screenshot of hijacked english (suddenly russian). And some log file.

I'm pretty new at posting so I'm not sure of the best way to do this. When I start to log on to the net, whether using IE or Firefox an error message having to do with "Google" occurs immediately. (I usually use my Google bar to go directly to the site I want.) I've taken a print screen so that you can see that message directly but don't know how I should get it to you. (I'm used to emailing such things --) As I proceed I get another message which I have also copied. This one starts with the words "Assertion Failed." If I continue I usually get a "script error" message, a copy of which I do not have at this time. If I tell the message that I will proceed with going to my chosen web site, the last several times the site has come up in multiplicity, most recently it appeared 16 times, one right after another, totally out of my control, (causing I believe Foxfire to crash), and then just a bit ago, using IE, the site I logged on to came up 7 times. I really have no idea what to do about this so I'm hoping that you can help me once again.

can anyone help with this as I can't find a solution anywhere every time I boot my pc up I get a "new CPU installed" message appear in bios asking me to enter setup or load default values i have done this several times entering different values into the bios and starting it on default values even thou I have been running the pc for a year I tried resetting the car CMOS switch removed and replaced the battery changed the ram sticks around, I've removed the CPU and found one of the pins was bent and straighten it
can't think what it might be

Answer:"new CPU installed" message keeps appearing bios start up

That is typical when you change a CPU. Have you gone to bios and loaded optimized defaults, save and exit? And in bios does it recognize the correct CPU you have now? are you sure the CPU is properly seated? Other than those things, all I can think of is reflash bios or call technical support who are going to probably tell you to flash bios.

Does anyone know how to fix this? it doesnt make sense as my drives work fine and they are recognised inside the bios. The only issue i have had is i cam to install linux today and i received an error message saying CD/DVD + USB devices not found and i cant help thinking they are linked.

Thanks in advance

Are there any devices in Device Manager with a yellow ? or triangle next to it.

I have a Gigabyte Laptop, with Windows 7 ultimate, and used to get a message "Press DEL to enter setup" just after my POST screen.
However, this is now gone, and i have been unable to enter my bios. The "windows starting" appears and everything else is as usual, it has been working fine, so i dont know for how long my bios have been gone.
Now, what i really want is ree-booting some USB options, since this is done in BIOS i discovered i no longer have acces during startup. I dont know if my faulty USB and the BIOS-gone-bye-bye is related...

I have edited msconfig, tried safe modes etc., disabled "Hibernate" (due to someone having my problem and seeing the message "resuming windows" instead of "starting windows", however i just dont get a message like that)

I have been adviced to clearing my CMOS but this requires acces to BIOS and BIOS is ... hiding!
a black screen, white letters, a quit look at "Pheonix Trusted core... BIOS version .. system ID... 1 processer detected " ie the ususal stuff. But there is no line with "Press DEL to enter setup" it is gone!

System information tells me that my BIOS is Phoenix Technologies LTD.

Entering DEL a lot during startup (I dont think it is a fast startup, but i do not know) gives me a new black screen, white letters, and Windows Advanced options, such as running a memory scan.
This is new!!!!!!

Hey all,

Brand new to the forums and relatively new to Windows 7. I was trying to enable an option my motherboard came with to allow the use of the onboard (ATI radeon 3000) and external (ATI Radeon HD5670) graphics so I could run two displays, one off of each card. I could run two off the 5670 but I like to game and have other things open and felt it would be less stressful on my gaming card to just run one off the onboard for internet and instant messaging. I set the onboard to UMA and I allowed 64MB of dedicated memory. I also enabled Surround View and set the display options so that GFX0 was primary and IGFX was secondary. Everything booted up fine with the exception of the displays switching what was shown at the log in screen. Which I fixed via the ATI tool. For some reason I felt the need to restart my PC. Upon doing so it crashed after the splash screen. If I leave all settings the way they are and disable Surround View everything boots as normal. For some reason the initial boot after enabling Surround View works fine, the next restart however causes the crash. I ran the repair tool and it came back with the following:

Answer:"Windows - No disk" message at startup

This doesn't look copacetic since no file is listed, I'd check and "fix" it:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Subst] subst C: F:\

Other than that the scanlog is ok.

When did this problem begin? If recent, you might just want to try a System Restore.

The problem is occasionally due to the system trying to access some removable media which has no disk in the drive, such as a zip drive.

It can also be due to drive letters being assigned to drives that no longer exist. What exactly is on your "c:" drive?;en-us;330137

Answer:Windows Startup "No Disk" Message

I don't see the "usual suspects" there, but I would suspect IPOD or Itunes, or perhaps "disk keeper"

Anyway, try doing a "clean boot" to see if it happens:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:;EN-US;310353

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

Hello WSF,

I recently installed the Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit OS on my rig. Ever since installation I've been having this really odd warning at startup during boot process.
This is how it happens:
1) Power on, XFX splash screen pops up and computer proceeds through the DOS screens and whatnot
2) Literally seconds after the XFX Splash screen and after some system loading occurs, a warning appears on screen while still in the DOS screens.
It says exactly this: "Warning! The system case was opened sometime after last reboot. Please check the system." Then below that: "Press F1 to continue or DEL to enter Setup."
I've seen and experienced F1 warnings, like the "Floppy Drive Missing!" Etc, fixed those. But nothing like this. I've searched all over Google for it and I have come up with nothing. As far as I'm concerned there are no records of it.
Right now it isn't a primary concern, just an annoying obstacle, as I cannot walk away to let me PC boot like I used to. I have to wait to press F1; just an inconvenience. BUT, what does concern me is its mysteriousness. Could it be some sort of virus/intrusion? I have McAfee's best protection and have kept my HDD pretty darn clean. How could the system even detect that my case was open in the first place anyhow? I've opened my case many times before this OS installation without any problems. Any help/insight appreciated.

Answer:Strange "warning" message during startup

1) Make sure your case is closed.

2) Reset the case open setting in your BIOS.

I'm not sure if this a new update for Windows 7 (64-bit Professional) but an account with Standard access now has a window that pops up upon login that says ...

You have no 'Administrator' privilege, so some features may not work successfully.
I've done more fresh installs than I can count and have never seen this annoying popup before. I've tried searching on google and the only discussions about this message are in Japanese. I wonder if it's not even a Windows thing but one of the drivers I updated (Belkin USB wireless adapter, SATA 6 drivers, USB 3.0 drivers, etc).

Anyone come across this before?

Answer:"You have no 'Administrator' privilege" Message On Startup

Never seen this, sorry.

However, next bootup, leave the message on-screen and start Task Manager. If the error window is showing in the 'Applications' list, right-click on it and click 'Go To Process'. With a bit of luck this will be the executable that triggered the error message and may help track down the cause.

Answer:"preparing desktop...." message at every startup

Hello Arch, and welcome to Seven Forums.

This sounds like it may be from this error message below for a corrupted user account. Do you get this error message before you see the "preparing desktop...." message?

Your user profile was not loaded correctly! You have been logged on with a temporary profile.

Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. Please see the event log for details or contact your administrator.

If so, then you might see if one of these may be able to help you fix this.

I am using Windows XP SP2. I just uninstalled Norton AntiVirus 2004. The uninstall would not complete, so I downloaded and ran the SymNRT program (from Symantec) to remove the program. All went well. The program advised that all Norton products had been successfully removed. Upon reboot, after I click my icon on the XP "Welcome" screen and type in my password, windows loads the desktop as normal. A few seconds later howeverm I get the following message:
"Windows - no disk Please insert disk in drive"
Clicking 'cancel' removes the message and everything appears to be fine. I did a bit of research and have already tried the following to no avail:

Clearing recent files list from QuickTime
Starting the PC in Safe Mode to see if the error comes up (it does).
Disabling SpySweeper from running at startup
Disabling ZoneAlarm from running at startup

I still get the error. I since have re-enabled ZoneAlarm and SpySweeper. I have also installed NOD32 AntiVirus. The error remains constant. It happens each time I reboot.

I notice that the log file below refers to L:\Adobe\Photoshop Elements in a couple of spots. I recently did something that caused drive letters to change. I used Drive Mapper in Partition Magic to help fix any problems and all appears to be well. My old "L:" is now "G:". I did have AVG 2012 installed on hte Windows 7 partition but I uninstalled it as well as Zone Alarm and replaced them with Kaspersky Internet Security 2012. But the problem still persists

However if I switch to my Windows XP partition I have no problem whatsoever. I have AVG 2012 and Zone Alarm on this partition.

I do not want to have to spend a whole day reinstalling Windows 7 plus all the other application software. Can anyone out there please help.

Can you take a screen dump of all your task manager processes that are running and post here. ta.
