Can you put a Blu-Ray drive into a caddy?

Question: Can you put a Blu-Ray drive into a caddy?

Hello,

Can you put a normal Blu-Ray drive, ( http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139985 ) into a normal external caddy?

I'm thinking there could be HDCP issues?

Regards,

Alex.

Preferred Solution: Can you put a Blu-Ray drive into a caddy?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can you put a Blu-Ray drive into a caddy?

A Blu-Ray drive is the same size a a non-Blu-Ray drive, so yes you can put it in a caddy

I have an Edge 14. Intel i3 M370 model.  I ordered a OBHC and installed a 160 Gb SATA drive, loaded with WIN 7.  In the main drive bay I have an Ubuntu OS setup.Trying to set up a dual boot configuration.  But, when I boot the drive and enter the BIOS set up, the drive in the caddy doesn't show.  If I let it boot from the main drive, Ubuntu starts up. If I put the Ubuntu drive in the caddy and nothing in the main bay, "NO OPERATING SYSTEM." When I look at the computer in Ubuntu, the OS7 drive is there.  All three partitions (Lenovo, OS and startup).  I can mount them, etc.  When I use Disk Utility in Ubuntu, the drive shows up listed under the SATA controller and is located at position 2 of the SATA bus.   I updated the BIOS and it is now 1.26. Still no sign of the HDD in the caddy.  Very odd.  When I power up the computer, the LED in the caddy does light up. When I run sudo update-grub in Ubuntu, the WIN 7 loader shows up in the list.  So a bootable OS is seen.  But if I select WIN 7 loader in the GRUB list at boot, I get a "no such drive" message, and am lead back the the GRUB list. In the BIOS, the config menu, the startup list only includes HDD0.   Is there some secret BIOS trick I need to play?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any jumper settings, etc. on a SATA drive, right?  Nothing there to change. Any suggestions would be very much appreci... Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

Per page 63 of the Lenovo ideapad 510-15ISK/ ideapad 510-15IKB Hardware Maintenance Manual item #4, your laptop uses one of 3 9.0mm optical drives (see below) so a 9.5mm caddy may not work.   There are some 9.0mm universal versions like this one available, but I have not used them, so be sure to check with the seller for capatability before ordering. No     Description                                                                      Part# /FRU4        HLDS GUE0N 9.0mm Slim Tray Rambo ODD             5DX0J464884        PLDS DA-8A6SH 9.0mm  Slim Tray Rambo ODD      5DX0F864044        TSST SU-228GB 9.0 Rambo ODD                                5DX0H14227 Lenovo ideapad 510-15ISK/ ideapad 510-15IKB Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_510-15isk_510-15ikb_hmm_201604.pdf Cheers,

I'm planning on upgrading to a larger SSD in my T400. It originally shipped with a 1.8" 64GB Samsung SSD and I'm probably going to upgrade it to a 2.5" 7mm Samsung 840 (non-pro) SSD.

I'm not sure if the current caddy in the T400 is going to fit the new SSD, or if I'll need to purchase the 2.5" caddy. If so, does anyone know the FRU # of the caddy I'll need?

Answer:T400 SSD Upgrade Question Do I need a new drive caddy? My machine shipped with a 1.8" drive.

you would need a normal 2.5 inch hdd caddy. The one that goes into the T60 and T61 will do, and cost like 4 dollars on ebay.

I'm thinking about replacing the factory CD/DVD drive that came with my W530 and lives in the stock 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy, with a 12.7mm slim BluRay burner (say something like this Panasonic UJ-265).  Since the thickness matches, I believe this is possible.

So, can the factory Ultrabay caddy be removed and completely replaced with a fixed SATA BD drive like this?

If so, is there a SATA cable problem?  In other words, do I need a SATA-to-SlimlineSATA adapter, both for data and power, such as this item (which is shown on the same Amazon page as the UJ-265)?

Has anybody done this?  Do you have any suggestions and/or recommendations I haven't thought of?

thanks for any help or guidance you can provide.

Answer:W530: Can I replace the factory 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy and CD/DVD drive with 12.7mm BluRay drive?

The connector looks right.  If I were GUESSING, I would say that it will probably work, but it won't fit into the mechanism that locks the drive in place.

Hi,
I am trying to replace my optical drive with a HDD Caddy with a Seagate 2TB HDD. When I start my laptop with the drive installed both my bios and os don't recognized it. If I start my laptop and then slide the caddy into the optical bay my os picks it up immediately. If I restart the computer the drive is gone. I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?
Thank you.

Ok so basically i see dvd drives that replace the optical drive and allow you to put a 2nd hard drive on things like laptops.

The issue is i want one for a desktop as the ones i am finding are too small to fit in one of my desktops. Normally there is more than 1 expansion slot for an additional hard drive on MOST desktops but this isn't the case for mine as i am using a sff model and well the only way to add another hard drive is to take off my optical drive and swap it with some sort of expasion.

Anyone know where to buy one of these for a desktop optical drive as the ones for laptops are smaller

Very confused about what the recommended HDD Caddy for T430 is. (to swap DVD drive with a 2nd HDD)Also, is there a non Lenovo HDD that works with this? 1 TB drive preferred.Thanks.

Answer:Hard Drive Bay (Caddy) and drive for T430

Ultrabay caddies come in two thicknesses, 12.7mm for T430 and T530 (0A65623), and 9.5mm for T430s (43N3412.)

You can buy these from Lenovo or you can get "clone" caddies quite inexpensively on eBay, e.g. 9.5mm Bezel SATA 2nd HDD Hard Drive caddy bay for T400s T500 T410s X200 is $10 for a 9.5mm unit. This is what I have in my T430s. A 9.5mm caddie will fit into your T430 but will leave a small gap at the top. You can search to see what 12.7mm caddies are available.

I haven't tested the clone caddies with HDDs larger than 500GB. There's no reason they won't work. Note that the HDD must be no thicker than the caddy in order to fit physically. Since you have a T430 with 12.7 Ultrabay opening this shouldn't be an issue for you either.

Hi all,I've just bought a icy box caddy and a hard drive to setup for a mate an external back up device. However, my brother has just bought a Lacie external hard-drive and suggests it's better/safer to use/handle than a do-it-yourself caddy & drive as the "proper" external drives better protect and against knocks and stuff.(We don't want to take his kit apart and check as it'll void the warrenty.)What's the score? Is there any truth in this?

Answer:External Hard-drive Vs Caddy & drive???

No, an external drive is just as at risk as a drive in a caddy.I myself prefer the icy box rather than an external drive for the simple reason that you can change the disk in side and internal disks are cheaper than external. Also, is good for when when friends need to retrieve their from dead computers that they haven't backed-up!

I purchased a W530 and immediatly swapped out the included hard drive for an SSD. I also purchased the drive bay adapter and planned on moving that original drive to it, but it did not come with a drive caddy. If the drive bay does not come with an extra one, and hard drives do not come with them.... why was it not included? Where do I purchase one? Does it need those rubber sides that are now around the SSD?

Hi

I'm helping out a friend to try and recover data from her crashed computer. i have a USB / IDE caddy, have removed the hard drive and plugged in - having removed the jumper from the back panel as advised (in fact I've also tried it plugged into the slave part).

I connect up, the blue light comes on on the caddy - I have seen drive letter H assigned to it in disk management but can not see the drive assigned within my computer so cannot access the drive. So it's as if the drive is seen *somewhere* on the pc but not in a way that I can access it or download the data from.

As I have already done this for my own pc (connected a hard drive and downloaded all data) I know that I CAN do it but not on this hard drive for some reason.

I've even downloaded tweak ui in case a drive letter wasn't able to be seen but that doesn't help either.

When I connect the hard drive the whole pc slows down as well - so it is seen somewhere by this pc.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Hi
Windows XP, probably Home version, would not boot into either safe or normal modes. Used live media to check condition of the hdd and also removed a couple of Trojans again using a live bootable anti virus disk.

Since then opted to use the Recovery console and attempted to "fixboot c:" but oops now cant even use the recovery console. The issue is "c:\windows\system32\config\system" file corruption. Maybe it is simply a question of copying files to ****.old or .bak and recreating them but from which location?

Because the recovery console will now not work I removed the hdd and loaded it into an external caddy and can now see its BOOT BACKUP & RECOVERY partitions with all of the directories; although the backup partition is pretty much blank , and the recovery partition has stuff but nothing obvious to attempt

The question is what to do I do to try to make this hard drive bootable again

Any suggestions gratefully received. TIA

I have an old backup HDD in a USB caddy, which I bought about 6 - 7 years ago. The drive inside the caddy has a very small capacity, so I want to upgrade it by fitting a 2TB SATA drive (3.5in).
I think the caddy is designated USB 1.0, but my computer today has USB 3.0 capability. What defines the USB capability of the HDD in the caddy - is it the computer, the USB cable, the external HDD, or is it the circuit board in the caddy itself?
If I'm stuck with a USB 1.0 capability, then I might as well buy a new caddy with the new HDD.
All advice much appreciated!

Answer:Will my old drive caddy allow USB upgrade?

It's cheaper to buy a Ready Made External hard Drive.one than buy the parts separately and make it up yourself.
If you already have a spare hard Drive then you will need to get a USB3 Caddy. Remember that with older Hard Drives you may need to specify a different/particular connection for the Hard Drive within the Caddy.

Yes for documents, music, film and photos. You can even transfer any zipped files for extracting and installing. Just find the folders and files. As for the installed programs on the XP disc, then no, you can't transfer them.

If is plugs in fine I would venture there is a ID jumper required/removed for that bay. Check the install details from Crucial on the configuration options. I should detect it otherwise. I cannot think of anything else that would prevent the bios from seeing it.

Hi, Thanks in advance to anyone that can provide feedback on my questions.  My goal is to add a second drive to my T42 via a caddy in the CD/DVD bay.  This drive will not be a boot drive and will not have any system information, only data. It appears that IBM offers a PATA caddy and I have found SATA caddys online as well.  Has anyone used the SATA caddy, does it work?  What would be the maximum sized Sata or Pata drive that I could put in this system? Eventually this drive will be put in to a newer faster computer so I am not concerned if the drive can outperform the T42 specs.

Answer:T42 2nd Drive in Caddy Type and Capacity?

eric8993, welcomr to the forum, as far as speed is concerned you will be stuck the the PATA speed equal to your main drive / board, (assuming drive has 7200 RPM). The SATA adapter you refer to, (Option number 40Y8725 - FRU 26R9246), works fine in my T43 after breaking of the triangular piece of plastic designed to prevent it from fitting in the bay. However, the T43 has an SATA controller with a PATA bridge where as the T42 is pure PATA, (the T43 has PATA drives). I believe the hdd bay adapter has this bridge built into it, not 100% sure. If you are game I would try it, IMHO it sould work but cannot be 100% sure. Wait and see if other members can offer advice and please let us know if you take this route.   edit; typo Message Edited by andyP on 08-08-2009 10:51 PM

Why WD in particular? It is more important to know what type of interface it is using, other than that, a 2.5" drive should fit in any 2.5" caddy.

Greetings, I ordered a 9.5mm "Universal" drive caddy from Amazon which stated compatibility with the V5-571, but it's terribly tight trying to get it to fit and even though I push it until it feels like it's seated in the SATA port, the screw holes under the keyboard don't line up and I can't get Windows 7 to recognize the 1TB 7200rpm NTFS-formatted drive, even though I've verified that the drive can be recognized on another Win7 system. I'm concerned about the mis-fit and wondered if anyone here has had success in installing a caddy in the optical bay? If so, I would love to know if there is a measurement or other specification I need to look for, or better yet, a link to where I might find one. Many thanks.

I'm looking to replace the optical drive with a caddy to fit the current hard drive alongside a new SSD for boot: does anyone know if this exists, or if one made for a different model will work? I can easily find ones for Y series Ideapads on ebay, but none for the z or p (which I believe are virtually identical in chassis? correct me if I'm wrong). Any insight would be appreciated!

Answer:Z400/P400 SSD Drive Caddy?

hi albertchang

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This is what I would suggest, This has same dimension of your ODD which is 2.5/9.5mm
http://www.amazon.com/Universal-9-5mm-Drive-Caddy-lenovo/dp/B009RNP6RI

You can refer to your System maintenance manual for replacing the ODD

Hope this helps,

Answer:Lenovo B40-30 - Adding a DVD Drive or HHD Caddy

hi calum

Welcome to the Forums.

Looking inside the unit via this B40-30 Video Disassembly Guide, this system uses an ODD connector board that attaches to the motherboard and into the ODD.

- Link to picture

If you'll be going for an HDD caddy, I would recommend you get the B40-30 with an ODD so that you won't have any issues  attaching a caddy as there's no guarantee that this connector is present with a B40-30 with a dummy ODD..

Hope this helps.

I have a hard drive 'enclosure' (caddy) into which I have permanently fitted one of my old Hard drives.
Instead of buying another can I use a docking station in the link below.
I want to use another 2 or 3 hard drives for back up and that would save me the cost of a number of caddies?

It does seem obvious but looks too good!?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/iDsonix-Sup...1600&sr=1-25-spons&keywords=hard+drives&psc=1

The caddy I currently use:-

Answer:Hard Drive Dock/caddy

I assume from looking at the specs on the old caddy that your hard drive is a SATA.
The docking station, some people call them "toasters" supports SATA and has its own source of power so it should work fine.

Hi, I've just dumped a dead laptop but have kept the hard drive intending to use it as a spare external drive. However, i am having problems finding a caddy/enclosure to put it in. The laptop was a Packard Bell Easynote F7300. can anyone point me to a website where I might find a caddy to put the hard drive in. Thanks

Answer:Caddy for laptop hard drive

There are thousands og them around, emmandelo, but you haven't said if your hard drive is IDE or SATA. Yon can get enclosures that will take both types though. click here You could also search EBay.

I have a hard drive taken from a PC that died on me (motherboard failure)
I put it in a caddy and connected to my new Pc and tried to format it. When trying to format it the Drive letter came up as "C" which it was on the old PC, my new Pc has the same drive letter and I was afraid I would damage my new Pc so I cancelled the formatting.
I went to computer - manage - Disk management, and tried to assign a new drive letter but not successfully Drive G. this flashes up intermittently.
Is there anything I can do to formatt this hard drive.

Answer:Hard drive in caddy will not format

You should be able to assign a new identity to the (now external) drive unless for some reason your PC is recognising it as a 'primary' drive, have a look at this article it may help.
I would suggest that you identify positively the drive in the caddy, right click it and 'delete' it. This should remove the header and allow you to format it fully.

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for buying additional HDD trays for the T400. I'm not wanting to have a 2nd drive caddy I'm wanting to swap out the primary drive with a drive ready to slot in already in the required tray. I'm happy to be swapping the rubber edging used. I've been using Google and found lots of references to the 2nd drive caddy, the only thing I have found so far is the screws  I'm reluctant to broaden the search and drop T400 as I'm not sure what other laptops use the same tray. Anyone got any ideas, links or know what laptops use the same tray would really help? Thank you in advance! BoyFrary

My external hard drive went bad. I would like to replace it in its caddy, which I like. But I notice when I took the HD out of the caddy, that there are no actual connections. There is a metal area on the side of the hard drive which I presume is a contact. I don't recall seeing this "contact" on other hard drives.
Do all hard drives have such a contact? How do I know if the HD I buy will operate when I install it in the caddy?
Many thanks for advice or links.

I bought a new HD and installed it into my IBM ThinkPad A30. More room: yay! Then I bought an Ultrabay caddy and put my old drive into it and installed it into the laptop. Now my old drive shows up as my D: drive. And now I want to format the old drive. But Windows (XP Pro) tells me, "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive and make sure that no other window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting the drive again." Hmm. So then I tried this: 1. Go to [Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management].2. Right-Click the disk and select Format. ...and Windows said, "The volume goblinbox (D Primary partition is currently in use. To force the format, click Yes."Can I force the format and still have the D: drive work as a secondary drive, or will the thing disappear? Comments appreciated. Cheers,Mush

Answer:Ultrabay HD Caddy - formatting D: drive OK?

Yes you can force the Format and Yes the drive will still work as the secondary. Just make absolutely certain that you've selected the correct drive and not the primary drive's secondary partition. A possible reason you're having difficulties is that your index service is probably accessing the drive.

I have removed the blanking piece from the dvd drive bay and replaced it with a caddy. In the caddy is a 120GB SSD. The SSD works perfectly when the OS is Windows 10 and I can use it for data. At this stage I do not want to swap drives.

However, I am a Linux user.

When booting into Linux the drive is never seen. The boot order is the same as is in Win10, HDD, USB, DVD. At every boot I get the message:

'special device sdb1 does not exist.'

If I then boot into Win10 and then boot back into Linux, the SSD is found, can be partitioned and mounted correctly. If I then shut down and boot back into Linux, the SSD has gone! Why should it need win10 to allow Linux to find it?

The BIOS is the latest and the SSD firmware is the latest.

It appears that Linux does not detect the drive on its own. I have tried every suggestion I can find in Linux forums to no avail and was wondering if another Toshiba user had managed to get a drive, not necessarily an SSD, working in a caddy.

Hi all,I have in the past had a pretty severe PC fiddling habit!I have therefore piles of kit that are last generation at the best, all serviceable but not in best nick or any semblance of order.I am minded just to have a great big sell up, stick it all in once box and sell it all for about a 100th of what it all cost in it's day.I have relocated, have no space and no time for toys so it makes some sense. However I will hold on to Hard drives from the ages as I do not want and old data floating around in strangers hands. So, to the question, any recommendations for a desk top caddy I can drop an old ide drive into and salvage anything I want before taking a sledge hammer to the drive?Looking for quality and reliability, have had Chinese versions that haven't lasted the course and will expect a USB interface at the PC end! Thanks for help in advance, Brgds, Epirb.

I've got a 250GB SATA Western Digital hard drive installed in my PC. I've never had any problems with it, but I want to buy another internal hard drive and a caddy so I can back up/clone the current one in case it fails. In the event of a failure, I'd remove the back-up drive from the caddy and install it in the PC.Here are my questions:1. Would you stick with Western Digital or are there better makes?2. Are caddies much of a muchness or would you recommend a particular make?3. Because of my plan to install the back-up drive in the PC in the event of a failure, would it have to have the same capacity (250GB) or could I buy something larger? Thanks.

Answer:Which internal hard drive and caddy?

Caddies are much of a muchness - IMHO aluminium ones are better from a heat point of view. I use caddies myself for both of my hard drives.BUT - for a backup drive I use an external USB unit - it's far simpler to plug and unplug when needed than a caddy.AND - I don't clone, I image4 - which is just as straightforward as cloning in the event of failure (though it takes longer), and uses significantly less drive space. It means I can get three full images (grandfather, father, son) on my backup drive - plus a daily data backup.AND - it makes no difference what make of drive you use. You can use a small lightweight 2.5" drive, which needs no external PSU if you like.

Dont want to fry my laptop or anything. And if it is going to be a problem is there something i could do to make sure nothing bad happens (ie: laptop cooling pad)? Thanks in advnace!

Hello, I have a thinkpad T520 and I recently purchased the "ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III" from lenovo.com however it didn't come with a hard drive caddy like the internal drive has

This looks like the hard drive caddy it requires.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thinkpad-X60-X60s-X61s-Hard-Drive-2-5-Caddy-Kit-YG35A-/320721833450?pt=PCC_D...

Without this the drive will rattle/move around in the bay adapter and not have a firm fit.

It seems very odd to me that lenovo didn't include this considering that it seems to be required. I paid $60 for that bay adapter and I see those drive caddies going for as low as $4 on ebay.

Does anyone know a place where I can get one that does not in anyway involve ebay or paypal? I can't seem to find them on lenovo's site other than having to buy one of their hard drives that seem to include one.

I have looked around the "on-line" stores and am wondering under what heading to look, or what form of words to use, as Caddy is no help at all. Also any advice as to the type of connections and or specification to have will be gratefully received. The old Drive is a couple of years old and about 80GB, so I don't wish to dump it, but to use it as a backup device for my Laptop. The reason for the need may be a lesson to some of us. My previous PC was built into a "Small Form" MiniQ Case. The PSU blew and a replacement is no longer available as it was specific to the Case. So I am now being helped to put all the old bits into a new Case and upgrading to a 250GB HDD.

Sounds like you should probably get a genuine part, or perhaps you got a defective generic, of the drive isn't fully engaged in the plug. Can you tell if the bios regognizes the drive as being there?  Also, is this an IDE or SATA adapter?

I love this computer, but I would like to use the hard drive caddy and there are no instructions.  I can't find any at the support site either.   Is there a manual somewhere?

Answer:I bought I used t61 with a hard drive caddy.

Hi

You can download the manual from here: click me!

Check chapter 1020, page #62 (from the manual, not the page number from your pdf viewer). You'll see the instructions to remove/insert the ultrabay device.

You can also check this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbVhzmLVtdQ  I'm not sure if it's a T61 for the principle is the same.

Hope this helps!

I am trying to use this PC to read a previous hard drive from another HP pavilion (purchased in September 2016 but now written off by my insurers as the screen got damaged and could not be replaced) vis a USB caddy. Using the current USB caddy I get a message that it needs to be USB 3.0 compatible and the drive will not read. I have checked with my local tech support and the drive is readable on their system. How can I resolve this as I need to access it, to retrieve a one off program which was not fully backed up before the laptop got damaged

Answer:Reading Old Hard drive via USB Caddy

So I gather it is a usb 2.0 caddy/adapter? Have you tried plugging it into a USB 2.0 port on another computer?

I was wondering if there was a supported HDD caddy for the Aspire E5 575G 55NW? I did find this, but it doesn't seem to support my laptop: https://us-store.acer.com/42-gden7-sv1#_ga=1.233576222.125166628.1475259256.

Hello, If your laptop is equipped with the HDD socket (#C), you can use this kit without any problem. You have just to check it by removing the door.

I have the laptop B590 (Intel Celeron 1.8GHz, 6GB RAM, 320 GB HD) and I have installed Linux (Ubuntu 13.10 64bit). Then I bought a second hard drive (120 GB), replaced the 320GB drive with this one, and installed Windows 7 64bit after the installation I have put back the 320GB drive and I bought a HDD caddy where I have put the 120GB drive and put it instead of the CD/DVD drive. The problem is that when I start the laptop and press F12 (to select boot device) the 120GB drive is not there ! I can't boot from the 2nd drive that I have in the HDD caddy. When I boot with the 320GB drive in Ubuntu I can see the 120GB drive (it works perfect) but it doesn't boot. Thanks for your help.

Hi,Can anyone advise me if it is possible to format a new unformatted hard drive in an external USB2 caddy. Some years ago when I tried this I finished up removing a drive from my PC and plugging in the new one. After formatting, the new drive was recognised and worked OK in the USB2 caddy.I would like to avoid the hassle of dismantling my PC if possible and would therefore welcome any comments.Thank you.

Answer:Can I Format a New Hard Drive Via a USB2 Caddy?

I too used to use the substitution routine to format a new HD, but more recently have had a hard time doing this with large HDs. In the end have reverted to the old method only so that I could use the manufacturer's own software downloaded onto a floppy. That does all the patitoning and formatting in a very short time.Only snag is that such floppys tend to be very keen on supporting only their own brand, and might not work if your primary drive is not of that family.

Hello, any information would help here,

My graphics card (built into motherboard) has blown and I had to buy a new PC. I would like to transfer some of the files from the old PC (not all files, just some) onto my new PC and was told I needed a hard drive caddy. My new PC is an ACER and my old PC was an Acer L100 with a 3.5 hard drive. I was wondering, what would be better for accessing/opening and transferring files from the old PC onto the new PC. Either
A. Using a USB to SATA adapter shown here :

IOMAX USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter Kit with Power: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

B. or using a hard drive caddy, shown here:

Dynamode 3.5 inch SATA and IDE Slim Line Storage Disk Caddie: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Or do I just need a USB cable to connect to both computers.

Thanks if anyone can help,
Regards,
David

Answer:Hard drive caddy or USB to SATA adapter

You can hook your old drive to your motherboard, most likely. You may not have the room to fit one in, but most likely you have more SATA ports available that you can use. What is your new Acer model?

I have a hard drive but...

Any ideas where I could get a Hard drive caddy or cable for this Everex Stepnote I bought. It is probably standard generic for 1997 but where can I get one?

Are there any alternatives?

Thanx
Ryan

Answer:Everex Stepnote SE hard drive caddy :(

Hard drives made prior to 1998 may have had three screw holes on the sides and two of them were no more than 1 1/2 inches apart. All of the hard drive manufactures agreed on a new mounting hole pattern for 1998 and newer hard drives. This new pattern places the screw holes to within 1/2 inch of each end of the drive, long wise. This pattern places the mounting screw pattern 3 inches apart, long wiseClick to expand...

from a quick Google searchhttp://shop.store.yahoo.com/laptopupgrade/laphardrivca.html

I would do a search for large dealers and start calling 800 numbers. most of them probably have resources to check with or can at least point you in the right direction.

I'm thinking of getting a drive caddy (0A65623) to install a second hard disk in my W520. I presume the disk needs to be fitted with the small metal tray and rubber bumper rails to fit the caddy. Are the tray and rubber rails included with the caddy?  If not, does anyone know the part number for them. Thanks KD

Answer:Does drive caddy include rubber rails?

It does not use or need a tray or rails

i want to use the DVD tray to add a 2nd hard drive using one of the many 2nd HD Hard Drive Caddy Trays i see online, but i want to use a solid state drive in it.  Can this be done? From what i ascertain via product literature, it appears that any caddy tray i see online says "accepts 2.5' 12.7MM SATA HDD only" or some such."  While there are many SSD's that are 2.5 inch, I've only seen ones that are either 7mm or "7mm (with 9.5mm adapter)."  Is there a product (either a T520-compatible 9.5mm caddy tray or a 12.77mm SSD) that can make this work?  thanks.

Hello all, I am planning on installing an SSD in place of the standard 750 GB hard drive that came with my Y480. I still want to use it and have been looking into getting a caddy to replace the optical drive. However, I can't find any solutions that don't look like they're cheaply built or from a shady operation. Has anyone here found/bought/used and had a reliable experience with a hard drive caddy? Links appreciated. Thanks!   Actually, I am now looking at this product from NewmodeUS: Y480 HDD CaddyHas anyone had any dealings with this company?

HiI was hoping someone on the forums could give me some advice.I'm after an External USB 2.0, 3.5" Hard Drive caddy. I have an 80GB IDE hard drive I want to connect to my new PC, and have decided that it makes sense to connect it externally, so I can use it as a portable device.ebuyer are doing caddy's for 19quid plus delivery. But being a bit of a snob :) I'm after one that will look nice next to my case/monitor. The ebuyer device looks OK, but I'd like alternatives to compare. So if anyone knows other retailers selling them please could you drop a post here. Also interested in any caddys that have pass through USB ports as well. Thanks

Can anyone tell me how much current is used by a SSD drive mounted in an external USB caddy? I am wondering if I can connect it to the USB input of a Humax HDR-1100S box.
I have tried to get the answer from Humax and from the Hummy support Forum with no success.

Answer:Current draw of SSD drive in external caddy

SSDs use 2 to 4 watts as opposed to 6 -7 watts used by a portable HDD (wich works fine in my Humax Fox T2 front or rear USB ports)
Therefor a SSD in a caddy should work fine.
