Preferred Solution: How to change default program to unknown application?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Yuki, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could download and merge the .reg file for the listed .dat option in the table of the tutorial below to restore it's default associations.

Running Windows XP. Kids have been on the computer and downloaded something called "bear share". Might be a coincidence but since then I've had a message "An unknown application is trying to change your default search engine" on startin IE. If I click OK it goes but pings up again two seconds later. If I click the X it goes away for good.

I'd like to get rid of it. I've run C Cleaner, AVG, and Stopzilla but it still happens.

I'd be grateful for some help.

Hi, my os is window vista. Recently i opened an unknown application (.cfg file type, some games files) with notepad editor to see what it is inside. I change something and save it. the file type is still cfg but now it always open with a notepad which coz my game to malfunction...so how do i remove the open with notepad and set it to a an unknown application..which my com don actually recognizes it and will prompt me to search the internet.

Answer:Changing open with default program to unknown application.

Press Start (the Windows icon on the bottom right), type regedit and press enter. Press Continue when the UAC thing pops up. Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes, find the .cfg key and delete it. This will reset it so when you open any cfg file it will ask you which program you want to open it with. You may have to restart your computer after completing the above steps.

You posted this in the wrong section by the way.

I searched the site for a while and couldn't find an answer.... so I decided to post my question... sorry if this has been asked before.

Somehow every .IFO file on my computer (using XP) has been set to open with notepad as the default.... these files were from movies I've backed up to my computer, and when I burn the movies to a disc they burn properly, but then they won't read correctly when played on the dvd player. At first I thought it was just the type of discs I was using.. but later realized that the problem never occurred before I noticed all the .IFO files as default set to open with notepad.

What I need to know is how to set the properties of my .IFO files to read as Unknown application instead of Notepad.

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help.

Windows refuses to change the version application called upon with default program.

I have 2 versions of 3ds max (2010 and 2015) on my system. I need both for different utilities (some that work in 2010 do not work in 2015, and vice versa).

I tried to change the default left click open program to 3ds max 2015.

However, Windows refuses to acknowledge this and insists on using 3ds Max 2010's 3dsmax.exe instead.

I am using the correct path to the launcher in the 2015 version's folder, I made sure of this at least 15 times.

I have gone through regedit tutorials, even downloaded a utility called openwithview, and tried working with the UI interface for 'open with' for hours but to no avail. Why is windows so insistent on using 3dsmax.exe from the 2010 version even when explicitly told to use the 2015 version? What is causing it to fight so hard with me? How can I change this behavior?

Hello everyone, before you guys beat me up, I'm well aware of this post
'Changing open with default program to unknown application' previously posted in this forum.
I followed the instructions posted by tacoman359 (Thank you Tacoman359) but it didn't work. I even restarted my pc and the .cfg is still being associated with notepad.
My os is vista; and I have exactly the same problem and the same reasons as jianming (the first person to post this issue). I even tried a few cmd assoc scripts and still, .cfg "opens with" notepad is still there. I have also tried to disaccoate .cfg from notepad in the other regedit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT by removing the value data.
Is there anything else I can do to get the default reset back to unkown application?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

A few weeks ago I let someone with very little computer knowledge (he had to drive 1 hour back & forth 5 times to open and save an email attachment each time he had to do that).

Anyway since the last time he came when he was on the computer I noticed a Firefox window opened in a tiny 1x2 inch window in my top left corner of the screen and I had never in years seen that.

Ever since that day my Firefox windows often open in a tiny 1x2 inch window where you barely see half the toolbar and nothing else.

It's getting really annoying and that time he came was just after my last backup disk got full so I had to erase my entire backup disk to start a new one, so I had no recent backup to restore to restore to after he did this.

How do I get my Firefox window to open a normal size again, and I don't mean just maximized, I want the restored window size to no longer be 1x2 inches.

Answer:How to change default application Windows size?

Dragging the window to the size you want it or maximizing it and then selecting File > Close/Exit should save the window in that state.

Hi,WinXP Home, sp2.I've been looking in my C:\Program Files and i've come across 2 'application' icons that i've not noticed before. One is called 'Delete.exe' (size 40kb) and the other is called 'SetAttrib.exe' (size 44kb), both created 22/2/2006. One says modified 30th Nov 2004, the laptop wasn't even built then. The other says modified 21st Jan 2005. There's no information for either in the 'summary' tab. I've done a full scan with Norton, Ad-Aware SE, A-Squared and Ewido and everythings coming up clean. Has anyone any idea what these application icons could be please.Cheers Chris.

Hi There I have two Problems: 1. I would like to change the default application when I click on the Voice Button on the adaptive keyboard. It starts Nuance Dragon Assistant but I would like to link it with a different voice application. So when I click on it I dont want Dragon Assistant to start but another vpoce application. 2. I uninstalled dragon assistant because i had problems with it. Now I cant find this link anywhere to install it again.I called support but all they say is I should restore my entire laptop... Im sure there is another solution to this problem. kind regardsNathan

Answer:X1 Carbon Adaptive keyboard change default Voice Application

By registry entry it is possible to launch any app when you press the voice button.  Here is an example of reconfiguring the voice button to launch notepad.  You can change it as needed to point to some voice application.  I assume you are familiar with modifying registry and .reg files but feel free to ask follow-up questions.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/62276273/adaptive_keyboard_wsr/launch_notepad.reg

What's unique about the support for Dragon is that the voice button will start Dragon (on the first press), and then stop Dragon (on the second press).  You won't get this same function with other apps - the button will just turn into a simple launcher when you modify the registry.

Lately my computer won't open pictures to view with Windows Photo Viewer.

I've already read several threads on this and have tried the customary links that are supposed to do this.

When I go the the "Chooses default program" on the preview link, it stays frozen on Microsoft Picture Manager whenever I try to change it.

I've been able to open with Internet Explorer, but I would like to go back to opening files with Windows Photo Viewer. I believe that this does not need to be installed as it is already a Windows feature. (7)

Any help and ideas beyond what I have already tried are greatly appreciated.

I want to transfer video using Pinnacle, but the software isn't in the list of default programs. How can I get it to show up there? This has to be an easy question, right?

Answer:Default program--how to change

Hello Bling

You can set default programs one of two ways

Through the defaults list or through right click

1. Find the item you want to change the default program for

2. Right click on the item and select "Open With"

3. On the bottom left check "Always Use The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File"

4. Either select a program from the list or select browse

5. When you have selected the program you want select "OK"

This should now be the default program that opens that item, This works for files, images, videos, video converters and audio converters :)

Regards

Craig

What I would like to do it set it up so that when I click an email link on a webpage(ex. mailto:emailaddress@someplace.com), it opens up Gmail in my default web browser. Is there any way to do this?

If all you want is for Gmail to open when you click a mailto: link, then download Gmail Notifier ( http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/index.html ) Install it, then go into Options, and check the box that says 'Use Gmail for internet mailto: links'. Done!
However, i'm not sure its possible yet to make it your 'default' email client, like for example, to get it to open when you press the 'email' button on your keyboard etc.

Hi guys, I'm in a new IT job for a computer lab and I'm picking up skills for maintaining it as I go along.

I need to change the default program for a filetype on all machines in the lab. If I just log on as admin and change it under my account, the change doesn't persist for the non-admin users.

I was thinking of maybe writing a script that will change the file association for all users but am not sure how to go about this.

Can anyone offer direction or help? Google turned up some old threads that weren't very helpful.

G'dayI've got my PC set up to store programs on my D: partition and C: is used for windows only. Whenever you install a program, it automatically chooses C:\Program Files\*** as the directory, which means (in my case) having to change it every time to D:\Program Files\Windows 2000\*** or D:\Program Files\Windows 98\*** depending on which OS I am using. I store all my programs on the D: drive under these 2 folders so that any problems are easier to fix later on.How, if indeed there is a way, do I setup windows to automatically choose the D:\Program Files\Windows *** folder?CheersBA

Answer:Change default "C:\Program Files" folder

The default, as you know, is C:\Program Files, For XP, which I'm using (so Win 2000 should be the same) you can change this by going to Start > Run, type in "regedit" (without the quotes) and navigating to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current VersionClick on the Current Version folder in the left-hand pane and the contents open in the right-hand pane. Double click on "ProgramFilesDir" in the right-hand pane and change C:\Program Files to your desired destination. Then exit the registry. I'm assuming you will take the necessary precaution of backing up the registry before you make any changes, BA.

Whenever I plug a photo card in to my PC, the new Photo Viewer program is launched (which doesn't find the card but that doesn't matter as I don't want to use that program anyway). How can I change the default import program to one of my choice (Lightroom).
I can of course shut it down, load Lightroom and then select the card but I always have to go through the process of first shutting down the program that loads automatically. If anything is going to load automatically I would rather pick my own!

Answer:Change default photo import program

There are two stages to this:

1. Change your default program for photos to Lightroom.
2. Choose what happens when you insert media.

For 1 you need to go to Settings -> System -> Default Apps and on the Photos icon choose your default program as Lightroom

For 2 you need to go Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Autoplay and Choose what happens when you insert each type of media.

Make sure that for Camera memory cards - import photos and videos is selected.

For an example if I choose to set VLC media player as default for an Mp4 file which presently opened by windows movie player even if I change it to VLC it will again show the Windows movie app icon instead of VLC. This is a big problem for. I need response asap. The only solution I know is I need to restart explorer. But in windows 8.1 It was all Ok. I have rebuilt the icon cache also. It did not work. So I need a solution. THANKS

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Change default program Install path

In the FAQ pdf it says you can change the install drive if it's not an external drive, but it still has to be under Program Files. I take it if you want it to be on D: and don't have a Program Files under D: you have to make one.

If you search using this string you should get a link to the pdf

TrendMicro Titanium Maximum Security 3 install path

I can't figure out how to get a link to the page with the pdf and not a direct link so I'm just doing it this way.

Hi all,

This friday i plan to do a clean install of Windows 7 because im running the RC right now but bought the Retail version. Im going to plan out my partitions so that i have one pertition for the OS, and another for my personal files and Program Files.

So i just wanted to know, how would i change the location from my C partition of the program files to lets say the D drive (other partition)?

Am i supposed to do it manually by cutting the folder and pasting it, and whenever i install a program i change the directory, or is there an automatic way like changing a registry value?

Look forward to your answers!
Thanks

edit: after further research it looks like u can change a reg value, but it may cause problems with some Microsoft software. What do most of you people here do cause i've read that some people here have separate drives for program files?

Answer:Change Program Files default location?

The program files are a part of the OS .. I see no reason to put them in another partition.
A different partition for your personal data is a good idea if you plan on having a lot of data.

can't change default email program from outlook express to my isp, roadrunner webmail. have gone through internet options, programs where there is only 2 choices-outlook express or hotmail, which i want neither of them to be. i need my default email program to be my roadrunner webmail, i don't know how to answer the techical questions in outlook about incoming & outgoing email servers. anyway, back to original problem. how do i override the outlook express as my default email program? my home page is fine, showing the webmail login page for roadrunner even though this home page comment may not have anything to do with default email. in case i did not tell you yet, i have windows xp home. sorry that i ramble on. thanks for quick reply. this is my 1st post, so does the reply go to my email address to have instant access? i lost webmail as default program when computer got virus & time warner reinstalled windows xp and explorer

Answer:can't change default email program on winxp

As I understand you, you want your Roadrunner webmail page to come up whenever you click on an e-mail link? This is possible, but not by changing any XP settings. The only way I know how this can be done is through the use of the Mail2Webmail plugin in Firefox (if you use Internet Explorer or another browser, there may be an equivalent plugin or addon, but I don't know)

I noticed the latest version of nLite has the option to change the Program Files path and thought i would check it out tonight when i do a fresh install of XP. I've seen some articles on how to do it manually in the past but never tried it. I usually install all my games and applications to another partition such as D:\Program Files and hopefully this will make it alot easier then changeing the install directory on each game and app. Has anyone tried this before and had any problem with it?

That feature has been in there for at least the last few revisions actually. I've used it on all my installs with no problems. I do the same thing for the profiles directory.

Hi all..

This is my 2nd post in here. Before i start, pardon me for my poor English and non-high tech brain.

I really need help. Ok, this going to be a long post. But let me inform of my laptop first, my laptop is Compaq Presario CQ40-538TU, 32 bit, using Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm a heavy laptop user. i use it around 6-7 hours in workdays, and it could reach to 24 hours non-stop in weekend, sometimes even to 1,5 days (36 hours) to 48 hours in weekend. i mostly use my laptop to browse some websites i visit often and to watched movies/dramas i downloaded.

Few days ago (on July 22nd) when i started my laptop i got this message :

"Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. One of your disk needs to be checked for consistency. You can cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press any key within(10)seconds."

it happened before, and usually it completed the checking to all the 3 stages. but now it shows this :

Hi,

I'm desperately trying to change the sidebar gadget to open websites by default with Mozilla Firefox (in particular, the "Ask LEO" gadget).

Firefox is my default browser. If I double-click on a .url file saved on my system, it correctly opens Firefox, and so does clicking a link in MS Outlook. Again, Firefox is default, but that's not my problem.

Somewhere I found the advice to change the "Set program access and computer defaults" settings. So I tried, but every time I change something there, it doesn't keep the setting. I click on Custom => Default Web Browser => Mozilla Firefox, click OK, get some flashing on desktop, but next time I get there it's set back to "Use current browser" again.

Anyone got the same problem? I'm using the 7100 (x86) build, but a friend of mine tried the same on the final build (x64) and he got the same problem. It's reverting all the time. Re-installed Firefox, restarted, changed/tried/reset everything I can imagine.
Please help!

Greetings,
Christian

Edit: It seems the problem is a Javascript-call "window.open" in the "Ask LEO" gadget. Someone knows why this call opens IE and every other call doesn't? And is there a workaround?

I have a Lenovo U510 that I am working on that has a 24GB SSD Cache drive. The chipset does not support using Intel RST, but rather Lenovo's solution was to use a 3rd-party software application to manage the caching. I was thinking that 24GB is almost enough space for me to squeeze Windows 7 (I downgraded the machine from 8), but I will need to relocate the various user, programdata, and program files directories to the HDD so that the SSD doesn't fill up.

By following this guide I was able to relocate the default locations for the Users and ProgramData directories. My plan is to completely install and update Windows 7 Professional 64-bit in a virtual machine and then follow this guide to sysprep the machine, capture the install image with ImageX, drop it on my Windows 7 USB install flash drive, and then run sysprep again using the unattended XML file created from the previous guide.

Is it possible to relocate the program files directories (default: C:\Program Files & C:\Program Files (x86) ) in the same manner (i.e. using additional options in the unattend.xml file)? In theory, this would give me the basic Windows installation on the SSD, but the directories that will take up the most space (Users, ProgramData, Program Files, Program Files (x86) ) will all be located on the HDD. However, I can't seem to find whether or not this can be done and/or which options will need to be included in the unattend.xml file. Most articles talk about doing it after Wind... Read more

Uninstall Python. That should dis-associate it from .dll. Then reinstall.

I've been alternating between zipped programs and installers. This played havoc with program associations. Uninstalling worked.

This is the Context Menu that I'm referring to, accessed by Start>Pictures>[Open a Folder to display thumbnails], Right-click on Thumbnail.

With my current settings [where?], if I select and click on Edit, MS Windows Paint opens as the Default Editing Program.

I don't like Paint at all, and want to change from that current Default Program, to allow my Pictures to be opened and edited by Picasa. Is there a method by which I can change that Context Menu, so that by clicking on Edit, the selected thumbnail automatically opens in Picasa?

And before anyone leaps in and suggests any other editing program from the plethora of others available [eg. Photoshop etc.], please don't waste your time - I'm not interested in them, as Picasa fulfills all of my basic photo editing requirements.

Basically, I'm looking for a shortcut to open Picasa with just one click, as I'm aware that I can also get there through Open with, in the same Context Menu.

You can use "Open With" with the Always use the selected program to open this kind of program box checked to make Picasa the default program for that type of file extension. Afterwards, it should open Picasa when you use Edit for that file extension next.

The Downloads folder by default is at C:\Users\User-Name\Downloads

I have another hard disk D:\ that I use it to save data files only and I would like to move the Downloads folder to the D:\Downloads

I will follow User Folders - Change Default Location to move the Downloads folder.

Many programs (e.g. internet browser) "save files"/"download location" by default is pointing to C:\Users\User-Name\Downloads

Q1) After I have moved to D:\Downloads, will the programs "save files"/"download location" automatically point to the new location D:\Downloads ?

Q2) If the programs "save files"/"download location" is still pointing to C:\Users\User-Name\Downloads, will the programs still save downloads to C:\Users\User-Name\Downloads ?

Q3) Do I need to manually go through one by one program settings to change the "save files"/"download location" to D:\Downloads ?

Answer:Will moving Downloads folder change program default save location?

Why bother with moving the folder? Every browser I've used may default to the downloads folder on the C: drive but also allows you to specify a different folder. I simply point the browser to the downloads folder on my D: drive and oftentimes I even create a new subfolder for that download. Works for me.

Silly question. I had to reset my Google Chrome due to a malware check.

When I click on a "send email" link in Chrome, a new email pops up in my Gmail browser. However, I would like it to open a new email in MS Outlook 2010.

There must be a "set MS Outlook 2010" as default when clicking on email links in Chrome, but I can't seem to find it. I have already made Outlook the default program for email, but that didn't take care of the issue.

Thank you so much.

Answer:Will moving Downloads folder change program default save location

It won't normally change the location that individual programs save their data files.
The download location is a setting in your browser and is NOT system wide. You could have IExplorer downloading to one location and another browser downloading somewhere else.

If you want the programs to change, you will have to change each one .

When \Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations\ does not know which app should open a file type, it assigns a blank-sheet-of-paper icon to the filename.  In my case, I use a popular .html editor called NoteTab (Fooke's

So, I ended up binding .udt to NoteTab 7 in \Default Programs\Set Associations\.  This might not otherwise be a big potential problem, were it not for a registry search on ".udt" yielding the following 9 keys ...

Answer:How can I change .udt file extension back to "Unknown application" ?

Using regedit, navigate to the merged HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive.
1. In the left pane scroll down to your .udt extension, highlight it and make a note of the value of (Default) in the right pane. This is the file type, so scroll further down past the extensions to this file type (it may not exist). If it does, right-click
it and choose Delete (this will also remove all sub-keys).
2. Scroll back up to the .udt extension, right-click it and delete it. Close regedit, you may have to restart the computer.
To be safe, I suggest you create a system restore point first, just in case something goes wrong.
3. To understand extensions, file types and their associated programs, an easier to understand example of the above is a .txt file, which we all use in Notepad:
Using a CMD prompt and typing assoc .txt will return txtfile (the file type).
Typing ftype txtfile will return %SystemRoot%\System32\notepad.exe %1 (The full path of the program that opens when the file is double-clicked and %1 representing a passed parameter)
Alternatively, look in the registry hive HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for .txt and further down for txtfile.
I hope this helps.

You will need a resource hacker of some kind so you can open the explorer.exe and import a new icon in its place. I would recommend getting a copy of explorer.exe and putting it on your desktop and then edit it leaving the original untouched until you rename it using the steps below.
Then you'll want to change the explorer.exe do the following.
To properly change a system file you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the old file and then copy in the new one look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information

Let me know if you need any more help.

I was looking at the content of some .ui file types using the "open with" command and then selecting Notepad. Unfortunately I accidentally had the box ticked to open all files of this type with Notepad from now on.

The files were originally designated as being opened with an "unknown application". I can set these files to be opened by default with any program, but as it is not on the list how do I change it back to open with "unknown application"?

I know it's no big deal and it can stay that way without any problem , but things like that can annoy me at times

Any advice appreciated , thanks.

SFM

Answer:Change back to "Unknown Application"

Hello SFM,

If you like, you can download and merge the .reg file I attached below to unassociate that file extension. It will delete the common registry entries for the file extension to unassociate it. You may need to log off and log on to fully apply.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Is there a way to change the default program for the "Play all" button in media folders? I want it to launch audio files with iTunes not media player. I have tried everything in this thread and many other online threads similar, including changing each audio file type association in settings to iTunes, but the play all button STILL launches my music in media player and it is extremely irritating. Many thanks for how to fix this!

For a friend trying to help is the opposite of most posts trying to get rid of Photos (the Win 10 new recommended to change to another.

In my friends case in settings default in both sections to change defaults - either for pictures or for .jpg files the option box to change program opens and lists 4 including "photos" but can not change the default to any from old Windows Picture Viewer. Can't change to paint either. will not allow change FROM Windows Picture Viewer to newer Photo.

I suspect registry entry issue but from other posts, it is usually the opposite, need register change away FROM Photos but in my case trying to get TO new Photos. Haven't found exactly what registry entry to look for.

Answer:Can not change old default Windows Program Viewer to new "Photos"

Certainly not necessary to fiddle with the Registry.
Control Panel > Default Programs > Set your default programs.
Scroll down to the Windows Photo/Picture Viewer, Select and Choose defaults for this program.
Untick everything and Save.

Select and Choose Photos and tick appropriately in there, and Save.
Restart Windows.

The other route is Settings > Default apps > Set defaults by app

Hello, new to the forums here. You all seem very nice <3

So I've set .html files to open with a text editor called Geany. Recently I've moved the installation directory for Geany from C:\Program Files to E:\Stuff\Programs, because my disc space on C was filling up.

Now, the right click menu for everything that used to open in Geany is broken. See the screenshot "issue1.png". When I click on it, it opens the same "choose program to open with" dialog that you get when you right click > Open with ... > Choose default program, see issue2.png.

Now the problem is that, even if I pick "Always use this program to open the selected type of file", the right-click menu is NOT updated. So I can't use right click - Open with geany, I have to go through the submenus first. And I can't find a way to update the path to the executable

All Google's telling me is how to change it to a different program, or change the file types the program opens. But I need to change the path to the program itself and have it update on the right-click menu.

(Oh, and I don't think Geany itself is at fault, but the problem is me moving it and Windows can't figure out where it went).

So if anyone knows how to update this, through the registry or whatnot, I'd be so happy if you would let me know

Edit - Where did my attachments go?
issue1.png -> puu (dot) sh/iYoHB.png

issue2.png -> puu (dot) sh/iYoIG.png

Answer:"Open With" default program is broken,& I don't know how to change it?

Welcome to Seven forums quat........
Just an FYI, you can't just move the program. You have to uninstall it and then re install it changing the path in the install to E:Program Files\whatever the name of the program is Just moving it has screwed it up for you. So move it back, uninstall and reinstall it.

Problem: All .max files on my PC automatically open with Adobe Acrobat (obviously the incorrect program).

If I go to "Open with..." only Adobe Acrobat is available.

Clicking "Browse.." and trying to change the program yields no change.

I haven't tried uninstalling (then reinstalling) either program yet, as I am using both of them frequently for a university assignment.

Here is a screenshot of my "Open With" window, along with other .max files in the background.

I can open .max files from Autodesk 3ds Max, but this is more tedious and time consuming than it sounds, and it isn't really a solution.

Help me Obi Wa... I mean Seven Forums, you are my only hope.

I have been using Picasa to automatically import photos from my digital camera. I would prefer that not to happen anymore. I have stopped Picasa Media Detector from starting on startup but Picasa still opens automatically when I insert my cable from my camera to the my desktop (xp home).
What can I do to stop Picasa from behaving this way and having the default Windows program to import my photos?
Thank you for looking.

Answer:Changing the default photo program from Picasa to Windows default

If you get a mass storage drive letter when you connect your camera you can try connecting the camera so the drive letter is present, then right click on the drive and choose properties and in properties select the autoplay tab and specifically select an action for the type of files present such as open folder for viewing in windows explorer or whatever else is available.

If that doesn't work let us know, maybe media detector is running as a service and that needs to be shut down or something.

A small application has appeared in 'C:Windows' called "SYSCFG16", 37 KB in size. Zone Alarm drew my attention to it as it tried to gain access to the internet. The date and time in the properties window seem to show it appeared as I read my emails after I got home from work. Also another two files have appeared, "ir0xya32" and "IR0XYA32.EXE-0843F149" at the same time.I read one of the files using Notepad, and it has some four letter words and other rude comments.I run Win XP Pro, use AVG, and Zone Alarm (Free Version), I did not open any attachments in my email, (any mail with an attachment is directed to a seperate folder in OE), so how do these get into the PC?After problems last weekend I re-installed XP Pro yesterday, and have all the latest updates from MS and AVG.any help /advice appreciated.Stroller

Hi everybody I need your help again.... An error message has appeared upon my good lady's comp saying ' Visual C++ Runtime Library -Runtime error.
C\: program files\AGI\Python25\pythonw.exe.
this application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way please contact the applications support team for more information.....
1. The thing is that I would inform them if only I knew what program is involved
2. Would it be safe to delete the said program without upsetting any of the other apps.

Your trusty advice would be of value.

Thanks
