Preferred Solution: Opera Beta Doesnt open PDFs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: Can't open PDFs

Can anyone help here?. When I try to download a PDF I get a blank IE screen which after some time comes up with a message that there ia a fault with Adobe Acrobat reader. I've downloaded and installed a new version of Reader and it makes no difference. Sometimes (rarely) it works OK.

Answer:Can't open PDFs

I've not got acrobat reader installed so I cant give you exact instructions, but I've had this problem before and cured it by going into the acrobat reader settings and unticked the box that said something like "render pdf's in browser" (or something like that)

Have a look to see if you can see that setting, if not I'll download and install acrobat and give you the exact instructions.

Question: Can't open PDFs

I received the attached message about two weeks ago after being unable to open a simple pdf
from a company.
I unstalled Foxit and installed the latest Acrobat Reader (AR DC?) -- same thing.
Just now I tried to open a pdf of a major software purchase and got the same message.
I've tried various ways to "fix" this, no success. This is very bizarre and frustrating. Your help, please.

Answer:Can't open PDFs

Have you tried right-clicking the link for the .pdf file and Save the file to your HDD? Have you tried downloading on a different computer and Save to a USB Thumb/Flash drive?

Question: Can't open PDFs

I hope this is the right place for this, but, I need help. I recently got a new laptop for my b'day, and, it has the latest version of Adobe installed on it, but, when I try to download a PDF, it won't open, or will come up with a message saying something like "this file could not be opened either 'cause it's not a supported file or has been damaged' or something similar to that, but, I know other people have been able to open the PDF I want without any trouble. The wierd thing is, I can open PDFs that I have saved on my memory sticks, but, if I try and download one from a shared download site (like Megaupload, RapidShare, etc), it won't open correctly. Is there anything I can do?, I've even tried updating Adobe, even though I was sure I had the latest model, and it still didn't make a difference, I've tried using Firefox, and nothing. It worked perfectly on my previous laptop, so, I'm just wondering what to do.Thanks for any help.

Answer:Can't open PDFs

If Adobe is able to open other PDF files, there's obviously no problem with Adobe. The problem is with the file you're trying to open. Delete it & try redownloading it.

When i try to open a PDF document from the web, Microsoft Word displays a box that has strange characters in it. Also, Word is running very slow if at all. Recently geek squad installed Norton anti-virus and was told later by a different geek from the squad that I need more memory to run norton, so, more memory is on the way in the mail. I wonder if the word problem is related? (Originally geek squad came because I had a serious virus that was eating up the computer.)

Also (sorry) norton often displays a box that says I have a "bloodhound" virus that cant be corrected, then I get a report from norton saying it was corrected (??)
I am laying on this on you poor people in the hope that it is all related.

Answer:Word cant open PDFs

Word can't read PDF files. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader for that. You can download it here.

I seriously doubt that problem is related to a virus. You need security experts to help you with the virus.

Opera has just released their 7.5 Beta in case anyone is interested in Beta testing. It's looks way different than ver. 7.2 Changes include...

=== Major new features ===
* User interface redesign *
This release includes a prototype design of Opera's user interface, which has been revamped to make it cleaner and more intuitive. The ad banner has been reformatted into an ad bar at the top of the Opera window. The main menus have been restructured so they aren't as cluttered. There's a new "Tools" menu for items such as managing cookies, contacts, and Wand. All toolbar customizations are now done through the Customize toolbars dialog. The main and personal bars have been turned off and the most used web page buttons have been moved to the address bar. Any toolbar can be set to "Show only when needed" (most useful for the Navigation and Page bars).

* Panels improved *
As part of the user interface improvements, Opera's panels are now more functional. The Hotlist has been renamed to Panels. The panel selector now defaults to the left and is always visible. Clicking panel names or pressing F4 toggles the display of Panels (ESC closes Panels). Panels can be maximized using Shift+F4, by clicking the maximize icon, or by double clicking on the panel selector. Maximized panels act as replacements for management dialogs used for things like contacts and bookmarks. All panels have toolbars and a panel selecting button at the top.... Read more

I visited... download an update to Fresh Diagnose -- a really nice program in the same genre as AIDA but [I think] better.

When I tried to download the update, it asked me to *register* my email address. I did so, and then was taken to the following page...

http : //www. freshdownload. com/ cgi-bin/ arp3/

{I intentionally busted the above link so you could see the whole thing}

The above page was blank. No download. Nothing.

The page is obviously a cgi to grab the email address I entered. THAT part worked because I got a message from fresh. However, the page couldn't take me to the download.

I tried 3 times. Turned off my Firewall. Turned off my AV. Lowered IE's security level to lowest. Nothing worked.

Then I tried it with Opera 7-betaa. Poof! I got to the download in jig time.

I have IE 6.0.2800.1106, SP1; Q328970; Q324929. Also I recently downloaded & installed the patch to the Virtual Machine.

I reported this problem at the Outpost firewall forum [thought the problem was firewall related] -- three of them visited the site & it was okay for them.

I have been unable to replicate this problem anywhere else except at fresh's site.

I run WinME. Is there a way to get IE to do the self-repair bit? OR..... what do you folks suggest?

P.S. I like Fresh Diagnose so much that I went to web attack & downloaded the update. Still -- I sure would like to fix the problem... Read more

Opera fans rejoice. The very first beta of Opera 9.5 codename Kestrel has been released to the public. The biggest change is a new feature called Opera Link which offers a way to access all of your bookmarks and Speed Dial picks from one place. It does not matter if you access the Internet with Opera 9.5, with Opera mini or another browser, the bookmarks are always available.
If you do use Opera Link with Opera you can synchronize all bookmarks with Opera while other browsers obviously only have access to the web version. The changelog lists a lot of changes since Opera 9.5 Alpha including heaps of changes to the Rendering Engine and JavaScript / DOM.
Opera 9.5 beta seems to render websites faster than Firefox and Internet Explorer. I could make another performance test to see if the tests show that my subjective feelings are right.

Question: Opera 10 Beta

Source Opera 10 Beta

The developers of the Opera web browser have just released the first beta of the upcoming Opera 10 Internet browser. The beta was available on Opera?s ftp site for a day and got finally announced by the Opera team officially in a blog post. One of the main improvements is the addition of the Presto 2.2 rendering engine which scores a 100/100 score in the Acid 3 test and adds support for several new web standards to the web browser including web fonts, transparency through opacity and SVG improvements.
The changelog lists many improvements and additions that have been implemented into Opera 10 including a new auto update mechanism that allows Opera to automatically update itself. This feature has to be enabled in the opera configuration. Easiest way to do is to enter opera:config#snapshots into the browser?s address bar and hit enter. The parameter needs to be enabled for the automatic update mechanism to kick in.

Running Win 7     Norton caught Trojan  virus and ever since I can't open PDFs. I removed Adobe reader and reinstalled but didn't fix problem. Anyone know how to fix this?   Thanks, Kevin

Answer:Can't open PDFs after NIS stopped trojan

Are they still PDF's? If you start Adobe Reader and try to open the file does it give you an error that the file is corrupt? Will the PDF open on another computer?
If you open an affected PDF file with Windows Notepad, which will show you the ASCII code making up the file, do you see at the very beginning something like "%PDF-1.4%. If not, then you could have been hit with what hit my office.
The contents of all PDF's, DOC(x), XLS(x), PPT(x) files, to name a few here, have had their contents rewritten with random data by the bug. File name, creation date and size remains the same, but for instance Adobe Reader can't open the affected PDF file because it no longer contains PDF data; just junk. If you haven't got the files backed up somewhere, they're lost.
Anyways, something for you to check.

In the past I have had no problem with opening pdfs in Chrome. The Chrome reader has always been disabled and Adobe Reader enabled. Recently pdfs wouldn't open, so I tried using the built in Chrome Reader. I get a box open saying loading but nothing ever happens.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader, with the result that the Chrome Reader was enabled and the newly installed Adobe Reader Disabled. PDFs opened with the Chrome reader, all good. Disabled Chrome Reader, enabled Adobe Reader, nothing opened! Switched back again, nothing opened. Repeated the uninstalling/reinstalling, worked fine using Chrome Reader, thought I'd just leave it like that. On next attempt to open a pdf, in chrome, it wouldn't work!! Anyone have any ideas?
OS is windows 7, OS, all browsers and Adobe Reader up to date. Pdfs open fine in Firefox, IE9 and Opera. Admittedly Safari is a bit iffy but works fine in Safari on an iPad.
Hope someone has a magic wand, I know others who have a problem opening pdfs in Chrome too, but don't know if their problems are the same.

Answer:Unable to open pdfs in Chrome

Google Chrome has integrated Flash directly with the browser instead of using the Flash version you may have installed from the Adobe Flash website.
With the recent release of Google Chrome version 29 and later, Google made a change and instead of using Adobe's Flash, they now use something new called PepperFlash.
With Chrome version 29 and PepperFlash it may not be possible to download files (Doc/PDF)
To download these files, follow the steps below to disable the new PepperFlash.
Try the following steps:
1.    Open the Chrome Plugins page by typing this URL into the address bar: chrome://plugins
2.    Find the "[+] Details" button in the upper right to show the details of each installed plugin and click this button.
3.    Find the Flash Plugin Section in the list of Plugins. There may be two or more files in this section.
4.    In the Flash section there should be two or three different versions of Flash listed. If the Flash section only has one Flash file listed, download and install the Adobe Flash Plugin for Non-Internet Explorer browsers.
5.    The first Plugin listed in the Flash section is the PepperFlash implementation. You can tell that the first one is PepperFlash by looking for "PepperFlash" in the Location string. See yellow highlight below.
6.    Find the "Disable" link and click that link.

Answer:Want to try Opera 10 Beta; remove 9.+?

I don't think you have to, but it's probably a good idea to remove the old version before installing the beta. However, you could change the default install location when installing the beta, but there might end up being some 'crossover' of files anyway (like in the Application Data folders for example). I think removing the older version is recommended.

It installed smoothly over the earlier 7.60 preview version. If you install it, remember this is a beta version. Never use a beta version for anything critical, though all seems very stable here so far.A few often requested fixes and some major new features like voice control and fit to width display and printing. The menus have been tidied up and made dynamic so you only get chat and/or mail menus if you enable those features.

Got this today having been using 7.6 preview for some time. Seems to be functioning nicely with no problems surfacing yet. Change log

Download 8 beta 2

In the change log, you'll notice document.selection support for forms. That means that you can finally select something in the compose box for these forums and embed that selection in color tags (for example).

Also, that means inserting smilies will insert at the caret position instead of at the end of the textarea. (Finally)

However, in these forums, the inserting smiley part doesn't insert at the caret position for Opera beta 2. It does work at the vBulletin-based techguy forums though.

If you use Opera, I recommend you update to 8 beta 2 (clean, separate install). (For security reasons and feature reasons. Plus plugin support is better. 7.54u2 is just not as advanced when it comes to html/dom support).

BTW, they have a handle on the IDN spoofing.

It's a good update. (especially if you are coming from 7.54u2).

I've seen that zone alarm problem with every version of Opera.

Opera Beta 46.0.2597.6
The release of Opera 45, codenamed Reborn, has generated huge interest, marking a big step forward in the development of our browser. We continue the UI redesign project with Opera 46 that has just landed in the beta channel, and it comes packed with tons of tweaks and fixes.

Reborn continues
The Opera UI redesign process keeps on going as we?ve added several tweaks, new icons and layout improvements. Here are the most important changes:
A new icon for start page customization
Speed Dial is now dark when wallpapers are disabled and dark theme is enabled
?View in bookmarks? button appears in bookmarks pop up if the page has been added already
It?s now easier to move a window if multiple tabs are opened on macOS. The clickable area between the new tab plus button and the tab menu button got slightly bigger.
Sound notifications are now turned on when the sidebar is unpinned
When importing bookmarks, items from the bookmark bar will appear in Opera?s bookmark bar
Macbook touchbar users can enjoy an emoji-enabled input field
New backgrounds
This beta release comes with a little something extra if you?re looking for the full Reborn experience. To complement Opera?s new look and feel, we have partnered with top industry artists Umberto Daina and Feridun Akgüngör to create a custom set of fresh, cool backgrounds.

VPN improvements

The Opera team released a beta version of Opera 9.20 to the public yesterday. The new version comes with several new features and fixes that are worth taking a closer look at. It looks pretty stable to me and I did not witness crashes so far, you should still be aware that this is a beta version. The release notes line out the new features and fixes of Opera 9.20 beta. The most important features that are introduced is the so called Speed Dial Feature and the integration of Developer Tools. There have been several security and stability fixes as well.
As I said earlier Speed Dial is probably the most interesting addition to Opera. Every new tab that you open displays up to nine websites that you have chosen showing the actual content of that website in a thumbnail. Clicking on a thumbnail or pressing CTRL + [1..9] loads the website in full screen. This is actually a very clever way for users who visit a number of sites often to check if anything new happened in the meantime. Great for webmasters who visit their sites or want to keep up with news sites. The tab can be used normally as well. Take a look at the screenshot that I made below.
I think this is a pretty interesting new feature that is unique to Opera for now. Remains to be seen how long the others need to add it to their browser.

Answer:Opera 9.2 beta released

I have been using this for a couple of weeks now. Well the Speed Dial thing. It is very useful and nice to use. But other times it is a hassle.

Overall i have to say this is the best version to use so far.

A couple of new things
Speed dial extensions

Speed Dial extensions transform your Speed Dial from a picture into live action! What does that mean? Instead of a static link to a weather web site, a Speed Dial extension can display the forecast for your specific location. In fact, we built that extension.
Speed Dial extensions are easy to make. All you need is a little tiny bit of web development skills.

Password synchronization

Opera 11.50 beta has synchronization of passwords - made securely through Opera Link so you can log on to your password protected sites from anywhere. Opera Link also synchronizes bookmarks, your Speed Dial, custom search engine preferences, notes (yes, you can take notes in the Opera browser), typed browser history and more.

The Windows panel now lets you stack tabs the same as the tab bar.

Opera 9.5 Mobile Beta 2

The Opera development team seems to be doing their thing opposed to other browser developers who are more focused on the competition. The team released the second beta of the upcoming Opera 9.5 mobile browser yesterday which can be currently downloaded and tested but is supposed to be a commercial product once it is released in its final version. The current version Opera 8.65 is available for ?19 at the Opera online store and this is probably the same price range that users can expect of Opera 9.6 mobile unless the Opera sales team would decide that they had to reduce the price because of the competition of the new Firefox mobile browser.
The new Opera 9.5 beta 2 is currently available for Windows Mobile and Symbian UIQ. A release for Symbian S60 phones is planned for 2009. The biggest new feature in this version is the mobile widgets support. Users should not confuse mobile widgets with widgets in desktop versions of Opera because they work and act different which is mainly caused by the limited screen space of mobile phones.
Widgets for Opera mobile are basically one click services that either open a function or website directly. Only a few widgets are currently available including a clock, Twitter or weather information.
Other additions are a new Zoom slider and some user interface and usability improvements in addition to many under-the-hood fixes in the browser core. It is a good time now to test the new Opera mobile browser if you have a mobil... Read more

Yet another Christmas is coming and we are getting closer to the farewell of 2017, a year which Opera was Reborn and many unique features reached our users. As the year ends, it?s also time for a very special release for us at Opera, the 50th edition of our browser.

Renewed VPN

Faster and better browser VPN
In September 2016, we introduced the free, built-in, no-log browser VPN service. Opera remains the only major browser providing such a unique service. Now, we are introducing our first major upgrade to the browser VPN service.

Moving to Opera data centers
Previously, the VPN service was hosted and operated by SurfEasy LLC, a company recently acquired by Symantec. We have investigated the best options for hosting the service and concluded the browser VPN service will be moved to our own data centers. Opera?s current server infrastructure, one of the highest capacity super-computer clusters in the world, is already hosting services such as the compressing engine for Opera Mini.

The colocation of the browser VPN service to our data centers is expected to give increased performance, scalability and balancing capabilities, while keeping it a free and no-log service.

From countries to regions
As we move the service to the Opera data centers, we are also changing from listing locations based on countries to regions. For the updated browser VPN, we will provide these options: Optimal location (default), the Americas, Europe and Asia. Locations will be rol... Read more

Source Opera 10 Beta 2 Released

Opera 10 Beta 2 was released earlier today by the Opera development team. Users who are already using a version of Opera 10 should consider upgrading to this new release which brings it one step closer to the first release candidate. The changelog lists many changes for this release especially for the Opera user interface, mail, chat and news, display and scripting, security and network. The Windows changelog alone lists more than 100 items that have been added, changed or fixed in Opera 10 Beta 2.
Many users in the Opera forum are reporting problems with the new beta release. The developers are actually warning users stating that it ?may have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations?. That?s not very encouraging and it is therefor suggested to try the web browser in a test environment and not in a productive environment to ensure that it is working without problems.

Learning curve has really been difficult.

When I open a .pdf it uses the Reader app. I have no problem with that except when I am on a website it opens the pdf in a new half window. Meaning the original site and the .pdf each are in their own side by side window. Yes I can drag it to full but everything I read said it should open full. Or at least that's how I would like it.

I have not found any settings to make it always open full. I should say that if I just open the Reader app on its own it does open full screen.

I've searched the FAQs and this forum but can't find an answer to this simple question. Up until recently, whenever I clicked on a PDF file in Internet Explorer the file opened immediately in Acrobat Reader (I'm using Reader 8.0). But now, all the PDFs first open the main Acrobat application and then use that to open the PDF file. Annoyingly slow and lacks all the features of the Reader.

How can I change this?

Incidentally, all the PDFs downloaded to my computer automatically open in Acrobat reader, and if I right click on a PDF in IE and save it to the desktop, it also then opens in Reader. But often, I would just like to look at the file online to decide whether or not to download it. If I right click in IE and select OPEN, the once again, the file opens the main Acrobat application not the reader.

The first Beta development snapshot of Opera 11.10 codenamed Barracuda is now available for download.

Softpedia readers have been able to read about the imminent release of Opera 11.10 Barracuda Beta yesterday, and since that announcement Opera Software released two pre-Beta Builds designed to deal with various bugs.

Early adopters can now download Build 2048 and start testing the Beta immediately.

The Norway-based browser maker emphasizes that Opera 11.10 codenamed Barracuda Beta is still pre-release software, and that users should only test it and not deploy it into production environments.
