IE 11, clean install, smooth scrolling doesnt work.

Question: IE 11, clean install, smooth scrolling doesnt work.

In windows 7 and windows 10 preview this works fine.

I clean installed win 8.1 PRO for testing on my spare rig.

Used IE11 a small amount and smooth scrolling was working.
I Installed all cricitial and reccomended updates via windows update. Included was also a nvidia driver update. Rebooted of course/
Now in IE11 the smooth scrolling is always off, even with the box ticked.

I tried toggling the tick.
Tried using the reset settings option in IE11.
Still no smooth scrolling.
This is a clean install, no 3rd party software, no imported data.
No customisation of the ISO other than to add a EI.CFG to disable the requirement of a key.

Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: IE 11, clean install, smooth scrolling doesnt work.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: IE 11, clean install, smooth scrolling doesnt work.

Roll back the driver or get one from the manufacturer's website.

Microsoft drivers have a bad reputation.

edit--- I'm lazy when it comes to driver updates & use a program to find them for me.

I recently re-installed XP, but when scrolling in an open window with the scroll bar or mouse wheel the scroll is very jerky, also when moving a window around the desktop by grabbing the blue bar at the top, there is a delay while the window catches up. I tried updating the Motherboard drivers (MS-7012) but Microstar International don't seem to have them anymore? Any help would be much appreciated.

Question: Smooth Scrolling!

I have Internet Explorer 6 and i got problems scrolling.

I can scrool and all with the scroll on my mouse but it seems to scroll like 5 lines at a time. And instead of actually scrolling the page, it pauses then moves 5 lines down.

I want smooth scrolling instead of skippign those 4 other lines it actually shows them but passes them quickly

Answer:Smooth Scrolling!

This is actually a hardware problem, I think. At least it was in my case. I had to install the graphics driver for my video card and one for my monitor. And all my scrolling problems went away.

What kind of video card do you have and what kind of monitor? If you don't have a cd (which I didn't in the case of my monitor), go to the web site and download the file. The only reason I had the cd for the graphics card was that my husband had just bought the same card for his system. Liz

Again, it sounds like drivers. Make sure the motherboard drivers are installed and up-to-date - espcially if it's a Via chipset board - and make sure you have the latest drivers for the graphics.Slow scrolling is almost always down to a system that can't cope with the load - your basic specs should be more than adequate, but drivers and other applications/viruses/Anti-Viruses/etc can slow things down.

Question: Smooth scrolling

Hi folks, a small problem you can maybe help me with.
On my XP computer I upgraded Internet Explorer from version 6, to IE8 a few days ago. Everything went fine, however I instantly noticed that web page scrolling has been affected, and is now very jumpy. Using the mouse wheel, the page scrolls in several jumps even after I let go of the wheel.
In IE I've looked at tools> Internet options> advanced, and under the browsing list have made sure that "use smooth scrolling" is ticked. Also in control panel mouse properties buttons, autoscroll, scrolling size is set to one line, and "use MS office compatible scroll only" is ticked. However, when I close the mouse properties box, I get a warning .... Run a DLL as an app has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.... Not sure what this means?
Funny thing is, I also runs Firefox on the same PC, and scrolling web pages on that is absolutely fine, perfectly smooth, no jerks, and one line at a time. So it's definitely IE8 related
As always, any help proffered is gratefully received.

I have a t430 2342CTO with the latest ultranav drivers installed. I have seen screenshots of older versions of the driver where you can select smooth scrolling for the trackpoint. I was wondering if there is any way to enable this behavior in the current driver. Also, is there any way I can change the amount of lines scrolled by the trackpoint? Changing the windows setting only seems to affect the touchpad, not the trackpoint. Perhaps there is a registry setting or something?

Hi All

Sometimes I get this annoying problem. My mouse scrolls fine(smooth) most of the time, but sometimes
it scrolls jumpy(skips a few lines each scroll). I did set the mouse wheel options in Control Panel to 1 line per scroll(after this issue automatically appeared), which is the min, but this problem occurs without any changes made by myself.

It happens in my browser and all other apps I run on the PC (photoshop, Windows Explorer etc)

If I reboot my PC, the problem is gone. How can I solve this mouse scrolling jumping issue?

My apologies if this has already been answered somewhere, I did a search but could not find it....

I have smooth scolling enabled for my web browser and it is nice, however for local windows when working on my computer I can't seem to make it happen. I found something called tweak ui that was suggested on another forum but it's "enable smooth scrolling" feature does not seem to affect local windows. The default "jerky" scrolling is just plain frustrating when scrolling through a long list of files looking for something in particular. When the list moves in large jerky increments it's very difficult to keep track of where you are in the list.

Is smooth scolling possible in all windows, not just web browsers???

Answer:smooth scrolling possible in ALL windows?

Make sure you have the latest driver update for your video adapter.

Im new to the forum and have a question.:wave

I have a windowsxp computer which i got upgraded, upgraded the ram from 512mb to 1gb...and also updated the graphics card. the computer just would not work after this, so i decided to take out the extra ram and it seemed to work fine. however, after sitting in my lounge for two or three months i decided to restore it all to factory settings to give to a friend. it all works fine, but only thing is when its scrolling it kind of gives a swimming makes you feel dizzy! as opposed to the smooth scrolling. any ideas on how to fix this???? is it because i updated the graphics card? would this have come back off after i restored it all?? sorry for sounding so dumb, but its just one little thing that is rather annoying! thanks for any advice....

Answer:Scrolling is swimming instead of smooth

when you restored pc to original it doesnt have the driver to the new card . you will need to dl the drivers for your video card and install them

It's a waste for me to have 120hz monitor when I can only trully enjoy it during gaming or dragging and dropping files, icons, active windows etc.
When I scroll down using the mouse button or just dragging the slide bar, I get this very jerky motion, which is really annoying especially when you want to scroll through lines of text while trying to read them at the same time, looking for specific word.
I googled the problem but no solution came up. Luckily for Chrome I did find an extension called "Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller", its made by the same people who made "Yet Another Smooth Scroller" for Firefox. This extension works flawless and exactly what I wanted to achieve. Unfortunately now when I look at the rest of my desktop, scrolling through Total Commander, IRC, Foobar2000 makes it really painfully obvious how shitty the scrolling in Windows is.

My question, does anyone know of a program or a way to enable ultra mega smooth scrolling in Windows 7?

Hi all

I like to work on my Word docs zoomed to 74% so I can see two pages at once, but very annoyingly Word decides that it would be just too easy if I could then use smooth scrolling when dragging the scroll bar! It reverts to a state of me dragging the scroll bar and seeing no change until I release the scroll bar. Very unuseful.

I'm on windows 7 Home premoium 32-bit, in case that matters. And I'm on a laptop so not using a mouse and its scroll wheel, and the scroll on the trackpad isn't working at the moment.

Surely there's a simple answer! But neither Word Help nor google revealed anything.

Cheers one and all

First of all, I'm not sure which forum I should use for this question, so if you're a moderator, please move it to the correct forum if appropriate.

Fortunately, I am able able to engage a form of smooth scrolling by clicking on my scroll wheel (I am a Windows 10 user) . It changes the cursor indicator to show that the "smooth scroll" is now engaged, and to initiate the scrolling I just move the mouse slightly. Acceleration, deceleration, or stoppage of the scrolling is accomplished with the degree of movement of the mouse (not the scroll wheel, in other words).

My neighbor, who also uses Windows 10, does not have this feature when he clicks on his scroll wheel. To see if it was an issue with his mouse I transferred my Logitech mouse and receiver dongle to his computer, but it didn't work either, so the smooth scrolling feature is apparently a software or perhaps a driver feature, but not a mouse hardware issue.

Does anyone know how to engage, enable, install (or whatever the appropriate term is) this form of smooth scrolling on a/any Windows PC?

I didn't find a good answer to that question by Googling it, even though I found one posting on how to engage an experimental feature by Google for the Chrome browser, which both my neighbor and myself use. I would think there's a broader, less specific and risky application available somewhere, somehow, but I haven't found it thus far.

I have this problem with my Tecra 9100 that after moving my cursor for a few seconds it 'leaps' to whatever direction I was pointing to. This is very annoying. Aswell as this, when I scroll, it is not smooth at all but like the cursor, it 'leaps'. So when I try scrolling down a page I've gotta be careful because it might just leap to the bottom! Thought I should also mention that dragging Windows is jumpy too.

I am almost certain that these three problems are all related to each other.

Before, my laptop was fine with none of the problems above. This was until error messages saying 'Delayed Write Failed' popped up out of the blue. Such errors I have found to be related to the hardrive not functioning correctly.

Optimisticly, I formated Drive C and put a fresh installation of Windows on to see if this would fix my problem. Surely it would?... Nope. How about I download the MouseWare driver that my laptop came with?... Still doesn't fix the problem.

I've run out of ideas and don't think a software update will fix my problem. I believe it's to do with my hardware (namely speaking, hard disks). I've got 2 hard disks. Coincidently, 'Delayed Write Failed' error messages shows up on both my hard disks.

Please reply, thankyou.

Answer:Tecra 9100: Jumpy cursor and scrolling not smooth.

Yes! I have finally distinguished what is causing my problems! After all the trouble I went through I have just discovered that a Video Card driver update is what fixed it! It's not perfect but atleast I can scroll alot more smoothly! :)

While smooth scrolling works fine with my Chrome browser when I engage it by pressing down once on my scroll wheel, my neighbor, who is also using Chrome (We both use Windows 10 also), does not get smooth scrolling when you press down on his mouse's scroll wheel. Is that possibly because of his mouse's features /capabilities, a Chrome issue, or something else?

Thanks for looking

Answer:Pressing on scroll wheel does not engage smooth scrolling

Pressing the mouse wheel enables scrolling by moving the mouse (notice the mouse cursor changes). It's a Windows function and should work in all browsers. If it's not enabling, it's most likely a mouse issue. Could be a faulty mouse, or there is mouse software installed and the mouse button has been remapped.

I have just installed a new HDD and re-installed windows XP sp 3 on it and since doing so I have lost my smooth scrolling in both vertical and horizontal planes.

So far I have:

*checked the smooth scrolling box in IE & Mozilla
*unchecked the smooth scrolling restarted and rechecked smooth scrolling
*Installed latest drivers for ATI card
*Undated motherboard drivers

I have searched forums and the net for a week now and nothing other than those solutions (or re-install windows) have been offered.

Any help would be a miracle!

Hello, I have a couple of HP Pro 3500 Microtowers. I recently created a clean install of one of them, installed the appropriate software and drivers, and then captured an image for deployment for the others. My issue is with Windows Activation. All these HP's have Windows 8 Pro OEM keys indicated within the BIOS. However, before the whipe, they all had Windows 7 installed which leads me to believe it was a downgrade.  for the original PC which I used the capture the image, Windows activated without hassle. However, for the other machines, I can see the key within the BIOS with third party software like 'ProductKey' and have called microsoft to ask them about the activation. They told me the Win 8  Pro key had 'no rights' to downgrade to Win 7 pro even though the machines were installed already with Win 7, and Microsoft states on their own site that Windows 8 pro OEM DOES have rights to downgrade. Anyone have any ideas for this dilemma?  Thanks!

Answer:Clean Install, but OEM key doesnt activate automatically

Here's a "highlighted" screen-shot from Windows 7, but the same suggestion is applicable to Windows 8:   namely to use the "Change product key" functionality. >>>  and then captured an image for deployment for the others ... Did Windows "activate" itself before you captured the image?

Hi guys, my first thread here . I recently decided to buy an ultrabook and I got me this one: LG Z360-7416, with a ssd and windows 8 (x64). As usual, it came with a lot of garbage installed which was using almost half of the ssd storage (128GB), so I decided to do a clean install. I got me a msdnaa copy of the windows 8.1 pro (x64). So, i used a pendrive to boot up on UEFI mode and selected custom install and when i get to the select partition, it shows everything fine, i select a partition and when a click on install, it returns an error saying it cannot install on my partition (i dont remember exactly what it says), and when i click on refresh, all my partitions vanishes, even going into the prompt and using diskpart doesnt show my partitions anymore. I tried to load some drivers, but it didnt help. I was only able to install windows 7(x64), where nothing of these things happens, it installs realy easy. I tried to install windows 8 from windows 7, like an upgrade, but after it restarts, it gets stuck also. My disk is formatted on GPT, as im using EUFI on my windows 7 installation.

Tried almost a hundred times using all solutions i found online, but always the same result. And to get even more weird, some rare times it gets to the installation part, where it says the progress, but stays on 0% of unpacking files...

Its seens to be missing some especific driver to windows 8 be able to work with my ssd, but i cant get it right, but if it came installed with windows 8, it must... Read more

I read that Reset This PC does a clean install of windows. I waited hours, and when it completed, I had the same loadout as before, with all the Asus bloatware.

So, I read Windows 10 doesn't need a recovery partition anymore. I figured since I had one, Reset This PC loaded from there.

I deleted the recovery partition, ran Reset This PC again, and I got the following error:

"Could not find the recovery environment"

So, I can never use reset this pc again? How can I make a new recovery partition, after I spend days manually researching whats needed and removing all the bloatware?

Recent Windows Phone update causing the MS Edge Browser to not scroll smoothly

The latest system update installed UltraNav driver of 4/6/2012.  This apparently implements smooth scrolling which is very nice to use BUT it significantly reduces my battery life.  I'd like to optimise battery life and return to my previous scrolling functionality.  I'd appreciate advice on how to determine which version of the driver I was running before this update, and how can I restore that version of the driver.  (I tried using the roll-back function in Windows Device Manager but that installed version of 7/6/2007 which disbaled scrolling altogether.) T617658CTO Windows XP SP3

Answer:Restoring previous UltraNav driver to disable smooth scrolling

I stumbled onto the Fn-F8 facility for managing UltraNav and realise that I was confusing the smooth-scrolling function introduced in recent versions of FireFox with the EdgeMotion function in UltraNav which was presumable introduced on my system when I upgraded UltraNav from to  I have disabled smooth-scrolling in FireFox but enabled EdgeMotion in UltraNav which seems like a nice compromise between convenience and power consumption. I still have minor quibbles with UltraNav, specifically, when I try to scroll within drop-down boxes in my usual Web applications (like Redmine, for example) the drop-down pane immediately disappears.  I have to drag the pane control on the right (sorry, don't know the correct name for this) to find the option to select.  Before the upgrade I could scroll within dropdowns on the trackpad.  I also have a little block with up and down marks appearing to the left of the pointer arrow when I scroll which wasn't there before.  I'd appreciate any advice about addressing these issues.

This is my first thread be gentle. I am not entirely inexperienced in building PCs (i've built 2: 1 mid-range and 1 gaming/workstation), but i have NEVER had this many issues with either the XP or Vista machines that I built.

Ok, i built a "whitebox" for a friend at work and they wanted to windows 7 64bit. So, i built the machine and have been trying to figure out how to get it to recognize the HD for the past 4 hours... mainly thanks to Samsung for making impossible to find drivers on their website for the Spinpoint F1 HD102UJ 1TB hard drive and i am also having problems finding drivers from the Gigabyte website... Anyway, suggestions? I gone through all the suggestions about checking the BIOS for RAID settings, but there is only 1 drive in this machine.

Furthermore, after trying to find the drivers online for about 2 hours...i ended up reformatting the drive from the utility disk that samsung had on their website....

The specs are:

AMD Athalon II x2 250 Regor

As suggested per this bug-report at the Google Chrome forums...
BUG: hitting CTRL while the window is still scrolling zooms it
...I am now posting here as it turns out to be a driver related issue.I am running on a Y580, Win 10, got Lenovo Touchpad drivers installed via Windows Update. This has bugged me for a veeery long time and I finally figured out what causes it.The problem is this:
In any application where I scroll content, the "smooth" scrolling of the touchpad makes the display scroll even after I am done performing scroll gestures. In itself that ain't a bad thing, if only the application wasn't thinking I am still performing the gesture. Well, they all do. And that is a problem, because the second I touch the CTRL key, and I do that often, a ZOOM-EVENT fires and so I am constantly forced to reset the zoomlevel.Note that the current driver ui doesn't give me an option to disable smooth scrolling. In general, on the level of touchpad drivers, there needs to be a clear difference between "user is actually performing a scroll action" and "driver is still busy firing scroll events thanks to some smoothifying algorithmagic".
I now disabled scrolling in the driver settings alltogether and use TwoFingerScroll to do the scrolling; it allows me to set scrolling to "compatible" rather than "smooth". Scrolling now feels a wee more staccato but seeing an end to all the unwanted zooming that ain't a bad thing, at all.~FWIW, apart from some more tou... Answer:Y580 - Problem: leftover momentum of "smooth" touchpad scrolling triggers zooming

I had this same problem when using Google Chrome on my T440s (under both Windows 7 and Windows 10). The continual zooming had been annoying me for months, until yesterday I figured out that I was pressing the control key while there was some still some scrolling momentum. Thankfully in my case the fix is simple: I have turned down the "scrolling intertia" in the Synaptics control panel, and I am no longer experiencing unintentional zooming.

Hi - have crashed my xp and have tried the repair install options as in the sticky at the top of the forum but to no avail. I have backup of most important stuff bar one file...which as you can guess... is the one i really NEED!! any ideas the best way to access the data from the HD. Can i attach the tower somehow to another one and access it through that one? Something tells me it can be done but i have no idea how. Or should i just give up and do a fresh install??

Answer:help - repair install doesnt work

Go here and download ERD from my shared site. Burn the ISO and boot from it. It's Windows XP that lives on the CD. With it you can recover your data and more.

Recently, Ive had to reformat my computer after a massive virus took over my computer. And now Ive been trying to return all the programs that ive had on previously.

Internet Explorer 7 was my favourite web browser, dont ask me why I just like its design, so I tried to put it on again. And so everytime I install Internet Explorer 7, and then reboot the computer (as it says to do) when I log back into my account, Only the background appears And a message appears telling me that windows explorer needs to shut down. And whence I Uninstall IE7, All is good.

Im running on XPSP2. And I installed Internet Explorer 7 directly off the microsoft website. And Currently Im using Internet Explorer 5.

Answer:When I install IE7, Windows explorer doesnt work.

It is suggested that you reboot twice after installing IE7. There is a good article on trouble shooting IE7, you can find it here.

Operating system: Windows ME

Installed a cd with pictures and video on it. Person who made the cd used some sort of Roxio software to make the cd. After viewing the pictures, the cdrom drive cant be accessed. It shows up under my computer, but it will not read cds.

does anyone know how to fix?

Answer:Cdrom doesnt work after Roxio install

First, upgrade your operating system, ME is the worse windows OS out there now.
Get Win2k, much better.

Try uninstalling al the stuff of of that CD and se what happens. If not well, try installing newer drivers with the cd-rom, cause the whatever file on it may have scred uyp the present ones.

other then that, i guess try the cd-rom on another computer to see if it is the acual drive, or just something screwed up on the computer itself

Hey guy's this has been bugging the heck out of me! I re-installed my copy of windows 7 Home Premium, went to HP's website and installed the drivers i thought were needed. My network controller still displays the little yellow triangle. Wireless doesnt work at all, and wired just says "internet unavailable" (something along those lines) and has the yellow triangle next to it. I tried re-installing the network controller drivers but it seems they are installed because it just asks if i would like to uninstall or repair. Any ideas? Really really frustrating issue.

Heres the page i downloaded drivers from. All the links seem to take me to the same drivers, I believe my model is HP ENVY 14t-1000. Tried downloading the drivers for HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO Notebook PC, and HP ENVY 14-1000xx Notebook PC so far no luck.

If any more information is needed i will gladly provide it.

Answer:What programs do you guys use to keep your computer clean and smooth running?

I'd use Win Utilities. There is both a paid and free version. The paid version offers scheduling, uninstallation, and document protection. The free version is still good for defragmentation, temp file cleanup, as well as exe protection if you wanted to, and it is also good for finding duplicates of your files.

Hey folks.

Just did a windows 10 clean install in my system. ASUS p8z77-m + 3770k + samsung 850 evo + 2TB HDD.

I got no exclamation marks in device manager and everything seems to work. LAN and Sound are alright for instance.

What do you think?

Hello all, I purchased a Lenovo Y510P laptop over a month ago which came with Windows 8.0. and I hated it from the get go. I was aware that 8.1 was available as a free download so I downloaded and installed it. All of these updates seem to have bogged down my system. When I click on what I am assuming is the new start button (the white house icon in the taskbar) it takes 6-10 seconds for the menu to appear .

I dug out the key with Belarc advisor and went to MS's site to download an ISO of 8.1 but it told me that it would not let me download the 8.1 ISO since my key was for 8.0. If I were able to get my hands on a 8.1 disc would I be able to use my 8.0 key to do a clean install of 8.1? It is so disappointing to have purchased such a powerful laptop and have it bogged down by so many updates as well as all of the bloatware that came preinstalled on it.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Will an Win 8.0 key work on a clean install of Win 8.1?

No, it will not. With my Windows 8 embedded bios key devices, to load 8.1 clean I have to use a Windows 8 dummy key to install and then after, run slmgr.vbs -ipk win8key.

This process works fine and is very easy. So don't let it hold you back.

Hello, all

have 2 500GB drives set up in a dual boot. My primary disk is running Windows 7 UltimateSP1 and the other disk has XP on it, though I almost never use that OS anymore (that disk is used mostly for junk storage.)

Windows 7, though acting much better now (see: could really use a clean install.

I'm thinking it would be nice to keep my existing version working -- ONLY while I install a new instance on my second disk, though -- would that work?
Can I format the disk that currently has XP on it and do a clean install on that disk; temporarily having a dual boot of WIN7 Ultimate (Legit and activated) and WIN7 Ultimate (Legit but not yet activated?)

I figure I could take my time getting all my programs installed on the second disk and massaged the way I want it, then I would ditch the bloated, buggy version and activate my new clean install...

I know, I know...all about the gray area I'm in here, but my ultimate end isn't piracy or illegally copying, but simply making my clean install less disruptive.

Hello, I own a Lenovo W530 (Machine Type 2438).After installing Windows 10 the Lenovo Solution Center recommended a battery update, which I did, but didnt work. Since that I had some problems with my BIOS, but they stopped (re-enter date) . About two weeks ago, my battery was empty and my laptop crashed. When restarting it my display didn`t work any more. I thought that my display / display cable broke (i had reordered a display a week before due to stripes on my lcd caused by dumb cleaning). After the new display didnt work I noticed that one cable of the intern display connection broke:so I ordered a new intern display connection  After installing it, it didnt work too and I observed, that I can connect and work via an external monitor problemless, but when trying to "duplicate" the laptop screen to the monitor it stays black, as the display does... What do you recommend?  Best regards!

Hi...just joined eightforums from sevenforums, as there is much info on installing, but no clear answer on this particular situation when searching (my searches capture too many other scenarios).

Thought I'd ask here before taking action and wasting time and money.

I have a Client (side business) with several computers with OEM install of Win 7 (with recovery partition).

He wants to do a fresh install of Win 8.1 PRO on an SSD for them. Because of prior bad experience with upgrades, he'd rather avoid an Upgrade and copy/migrate to new drive. With what I've read so far on this, his concern is not misplaced.

I checked using Upgrade Assistant and looks like no problems that we could not handle in reinstalling their Win 8 compatible versions of their few flagged apps. Hardware minimum is definitely met.

Microsoft has changed the OEM authorization process, writing info to the BIOS. I don't think any such thing exists with a Win 7 era computer (correct?).

The question is, will running a clean install on a new drive with the new key provided (OEM DVD pkg) even work? Are there any potential "gotchas"?

Answer:Clean Install 8.1 OEM on SSD - Work for Win 7 OEM desktop?

Remove the old windows 7 drive
install the new drive and install windows 8.1 with new product key

then you can do one of two things -
reinstall the old windows 7 drive and use the BIOS settings to select the boot disk
or add the other version of windows to the primary boot disk BCD (Boot manager)

either way will allow you to dual boot the PC

Answer:Clean XP install - used to work, now it doesn't

You can always use VirtualBox or VMWare Player to run a Virtual Machine of XP in Vista/7. I really don't understand  why you need to stick with XP, which was developed in 2000 and which software and hardware companies are starting to drop support for. It was never optimized for multi-GPU configs, it does not support DX 11, etc. if you are thinking of gaming, for example. Windows 7 is far better than Vista-optimized UI, better memory management, better UAC access, etc.The fact that it works fine in Vista and not in XP is odd. Vista is a major memory hog when compared with XP...It shouldn't be a hardware problem. It might be that you have a bad XP setup disc. Could you try resetting your CMOS and see what happens? I know of some computers that have an "OS Install Mode" which limits the RAM to 256 MB and forces generic drivers. Your RAM should be fine if it works in Vista without a hitch-if you are really paranoid you could run Memtest86+ for 10 passes or so.

If you have Windows 7, update manually to SP1.
Download: Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Center

If updates fail, then run "SFC /scannow" to check the integrity of the OS and it should repair damaged files.

I have a Dell Vostro 3500, after 6 years it was time for a clean install. I used the DVD that was delivered with the PC. It was a Windows 7 Home edition 32 bit, but when I bought it the 64 bit version was installed.
After installing this, I inserted the DVD that was also delivered with the laptop with all the drivers on it.
I started to install them, everything went fine until I tried installing the Drivers (there were two) for the WLAN. Every time I try to install them it just says that the hardware was not found.
I know for a fact that the laptop has a WLAN inside since I've been using the WIFI for the passed 6 years now.
Can someone help me figure out how to fix this problem? Should I just try downloading different drivers on a different computer and install those? Should I do a new clean install of the computer (this time 64 bit perhaps?)?

okay, so here is the general gist of things:
My XP custom built desktop working fine for about a year stopped booting. I tried various things and it started working again. Then it crashed again giving a blue screen of death at the XP start up screen.
I formatted the entire hardrive and reinstalled. It failed once it restarted bsod, so I ran dskchk on it using my roommate's computer.
3 bad sectors, quarantined and formatted once again and reinstalled.
After the reinstallation I was told that ntosknrl.exe was corrupted or missing, so I redid the installation and it booted and XP was running, but when I went to update windows XP to SP3 it found tons of system files that were corrupted.
I could not copy edit or delete the files, there were quite a few, which really confused me being that I had run dskchk, and formatted the hardrive before installing.

From there I tried running Memtest from a floppy and it passed multiple passes with no errors. Still no luck.

I then tried to swap out hardrives with an older one that I had, reformatted that hardrive installed XP, and got the same error that ntoskrnl.exe was corrupted or missing.

We then put a third hardrive in with a working copy of windows on it and then booted it up. It hit the windows 7 loading screen and then bsod'd and restarted into a loop.

as far as I can guess, it's my motherboard. I don't really know where else to turn, and also, how would I confirm this?

Any guesses/suggestion... Read more

bot a 9800 pro, cant get it tow work. tried reformatting a few times. windows keeps saying the display is "(Default Moniter) on."

installed both versions of atis drivers, the one with the control panel and without.

im running an eMachines T2460 with an FIC AM37 motherboard that has onboard video.

after installing updated drivers, and more looking around, i think i've found the problem: It "reads" the card as being in PCI slot 1, but its in the AGP slot. does that make a difference?

any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:9800 Pro won't work on windows xp pro clean install

On my Sony VAIO I reinstalled windows after some problems and now my brightness Fn keys don't work, display output, hibernate or any others.
How can I make them work?

Thank you

Answer:Function keys don't work after clean install

You can go to the sony site and fetch the appropriate download for your computer.

Just find the list of downloads for your computer, read the descriptions and pick the ones you need.

I recently did clean install of Vista x64 to my T500 a while ago.I can't recall now if the wireless drivers were installed through MS update or through ThinkVantage System Update. It is an Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN.Yesterday I discovered that Fn-F5 does not turn on the wireless in this laptop. How can I fix this?? I do need to use wireless from time to time.Thank you, Tom

Answer:T500, clean install, Fn-F5 wifi does not work...

I had the same issue with being able to turn the Bluetooth radio on and off.  You have to install the Hotkey driver so that the Fn keys will work properly.

T500 - P8600 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, Modded - 4GB Patriot DDR3 and 320GB Caviar Black 7200rpm drive with Ati HD3650 and Catalyst 9.6 modded drivers - Vista Business 32bit stripped down to bare bones with VM's from Ubuntu to Win7RC1 64-bit.

I have upgraded my 7 install to Windows 10 this morning. All works fine & 10 says my copy is genuine and validated.
After that, I decided to create a copy of 10 install on DVD with the Windows 10 tool.
At lauch of install, Windows doesn't recognize my old 7 key. I thought "ok maybe it will activate at the end of install"
But NO ! I get my clean & fresh install of 10 but it doesn't activate my copy.
So Win7/8 users who wants Win10, you should install your old version and make the upgrade manually. each time...
Boring !
Thanks Microsoft

Answer:Clean Install after upgrade from 7 don't work !! Can't activate the OS

Seriously whats up with that. Same thing happened to me. Why is Microsoft so dumb? why didn't they just activate our key so we can install a fresh windows of windows 10 and activate it, instead of doing a stupid upgrade. well people who want to do the upgrade they can. but Microsoft should at least let us do a fresh install of windows 10.

Ok so i did a clean install and the internet wont work. So i went to cmd and typed "ipconfig /all" and it said "windows ip configuration" and thats it. I had this happen before and it was because a file was missing. What file could it be?

I used a windows xp sp2 disc.

Answer:[SOLVED] clean install and now IPCONFIG does not work

Check all the drivers have been installed correctly for the network card (assuming you're using an ethernet connection).

Check that the network card is properly seated and the cable is ok (you should see a yellow light on the card).

I have a very good Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.1 running on it and I will definitely want to upgrade it to Windows 10 when the finished version is out.
Most laptops today don't come with a Windows installation discs OR even a Windows serial number for that matter (serial is stored in BIOS from what I understood). What you have is a "factory reset partition" and you can make your own bootable DVDs for this "factory reset" as well. Although I needed time to get used to this practice, I am OK with it now, it seems to work pretty well.
Do we have any idea so far on how this process of clean install upgrade will work when upgrading from Windows 8.1 to 10? Also, will it be possible to create a Windows 10 "factory reset partition" after upgrade?
Most importantly, will we have to wait for our laptop vendors (Toshiba, Dell, etc.) for a special Windows 10 upgrade "something" or will this be all handled by Microsoft?

Answer:How will Windows 10 clean install work on laptops (OEM)?

Windows OS is not like Windows Phone OS where you are waiting on the OEM and or carrier to release the update. The machine you have now is yours. It shouldn't void any warranty updating to the latest OS either.
When you update Windows to a new version there are several ways to go about installing it. Microsoft offers a direct update over the previous Windows version. (however your backup partition will still be the old version). You can download an image to be burned to DVD or even stored on a USB stick. This will allow for a clean install of Windows if you choose.
You'll always be able to download an image of the version of Windows you have on your machine so long as you have a valid install.
My recommendation is for a clean install (including wiping the backup partition) which removes all vendor bloat and then do a backup of the system to DVD after the clean install or even just an image file you can store somewhere.
