Asus' new ZenBook Pro UX501 touted as the latest MacBook Pro killer

Question: Asus' new ZenBook Pro UX501 touted as the latest MacBook Pro killer

Asus has released a new notebook that looks to be the closest rival yet to Apple's bar-setting MacBook Pro. At 0.81 inches thick, the ZenBook Pro UX501 is a tad bit thicker than the MacBook Pro but it more than...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was really being impressed by this device until I accidentally noticed the price then my eyes started to burn and stream. $500 less and Asus would've hit one right out of the park.

Dear HP,
I left Apple and jumped on the "Macbook Killer" as you like to call it. I was mesmerized by the amazing specs of an i7 processor, 512 SSD and 4k screen that produces amazing crystal clear imagery and video. The fact that it turns into a tablet and I?m able to be lazy enough to avoid the keyboard and touch the screen instead blew my mind. Like any man at a club, I jumped on that and dropped $1400 on the Specter X360. I showed that sleek looking laptop off like women show their **bleep** on Instagram. I was proud to own the next best thing and bashed Apple on any occasion I could and loved saying "stop riding the apple **bleep** train and get the HP Specter". I even neglected the consistent clichés of the sound randomly distorting for no reason, or the fact that the awesometacular 4k screen sucks your battery dry in less than 6hrs even though you claim the computer battery last 12hrs on a full charge, "subjective to use" of course... or if you are one of those idiots that paid extra for the 4k screen on a 13inch laptop! I also really enjoy the stutter in the video editing process, I must have gotten confused about the advertisement and reviews saying it can handle video editing, just not my kind of editing I guess. I am very proud that my laptop doesn't sustain easy scratches on its metal body like MacBooks do, you got them their HP. So as I get closer to the end of my one year warranty my meticulous, 4.5 rated laptop dies. Ugh, guess PCs haven't changed in ove... Read more

I certainly feel your pain and admire your prose. This is a fine piece of satire. Sorry for your trouble but the folks who frequent this space are generally not HP employees. My son is in high school right now, and will start the Computer networking in the local Vo-tech school, and he'll be there for 2 years. He needs a laptop for the course. Would the Zenbook (the model with a 128gb SSD, 4gb RAM, i7 2677m) be worth his while? I found one for $1200. I thought the small, portable design would be good for him to carry back and fourth to and from school.

Answer:ASUS Zenbook for school?

He won't need a powerful laptop to do Computer Networking. I think just a simple netbook, or perhaps a bit bigger than that, will do.

Hello,
I have an Asus Zenbook ux32a. It's coming up for three years old now and suffers awful slowdown. I fitted extra RAM, 69 GB from 185 GB are used on the hard drive, performance is usually 10-40% from CPU and 30-40% of memory and I've wiped it clean and rebooted several times but still suffer very bad slowdown.
I use the following programs: Memoq, office 2013, Bitdefender
Does anyone have any suggestions where the problem may lie?
Thanks in advance!

Hi

I'm trying to clone the original HDD of my Asus ZenBook to a SSD disk. The original disk is 500GB and the SSD is 256GB. But the original disk has a 300GB Data partition that is empty and i don't need, so there shouldn't be any problem with moving a large disk to a smaller.

I used several cloning programs, but it seems that Macrium Reflect did the best job so far, but not all the way to the goal. With other programs, like Easeus Partition Master, i always had to do a boot repair to get Windows 8 to boot. But with Macrium Reflect i cloned the disk and Windows 8 booted fine. I didn't remove the Data partition, but made it very small, thinking that keeping the same number of partitions would help me to get everything working.

My problem is, with the original drive i can press F9 at boot and enter recovery mode.(I have a recovery and a restore partition on the drive.) If i press F9 with the SSD disk i get a boot error, 0xc0000225 and that my PC needs to be repaired. In some way this also messes up the original boot, because now i cant boot Windows 8 on the SSD. It works perfect until i try to press F9.

Is there some way that i could really clone the original HDD so that even the F9 option works? Sure, i could use it this way. But it is annoying me that F9 don't work on the SSD. And it could be a problem when someone else is using the PC, because pressing F9 destroys the normal boot also.

Maybe there is some better cloning software?

Between these two laptops which one would you prefer and why? I understand that the zenbook has a m3 processor which I have heard isn't a great processor but I can find it with 8 GB RAM and a 256GB hard drive $100 cheaper than I can find the HP with 4 GB RAM and a 128 GB hard drive but it has an i5 processor. Which would you prefer?

Hello all,

I have the EXACT same problem as Kirk regarding random crashes on my Zenbook when running off the battery. I tried reverting to Windows 7, and it helped (it doesn't crash), but I was wondering if Kirk/anyone else found a solution to the problem that would let me keep Win8? I like it better than Win7!

I tried sending a PM to Kirk, but was denied because I haven't posted in here 3 times yet. So here I am :)

Hi All
Some weeks ago I upgraded my son's Zenbook. Initially it seemed to work fine. So I did a clean install. I can vaguely remember an odd miss start-up after the clean install. It seemed to work allright after that.
Anyway my son skyped a couple of weeks ago to say it isn't working.
Generally speaking, can I fresh install the original W7, it was home premium. I haven't a disk and wonder if there are any ISO's available at MS for download?

Thanks

Answer:Asus Zenbook UX31E, not working after W10 upgrade

Yes, you can install WIndows 7 again.

The Windows 7 ISO images are available from here:

You might want to adjust the language/country code in that URL to match the country, for which you need the images!

Hello Everyone,

Well, I finally upgraded to the Asus Zenbook Prime 32a! It's truly an astonishingly fast laptop.

I have a couple of questions though. What would you recommend for Antivirus software (free, ideally). It came loaded with McAfee, but now I'm being chiseled for money. All of the system info appears below.

Finally, at times I have difficulties streaming movies from Amazon's site. Is there any sort of clean-up or process I can run that will allow me to enjoy movies and TV shows without the interruption?

Thank you!,
Brian

Ok, I am about to end my time in high school and get ready for about 4 - 5 years of university. I am looking for a worthy machine for my needs. I am a person who likes his gadget to have style, and the Asus zenbook line fits that description smugly, but there are so many variations! the UX 301, 302LA, 303LN, NX500...All of them I assume are very recent, and I haven't even listed them all yet! (as in 2014 only), I need to choose between these machines for 4 years of study in a dual course of Design and Media (PR & Advertising), that means, great typing, great touchscreen, potential need for graphic-intensive editing of photos / videos, and a uni-life needs some sort of gaming right?
My needs:
It needs to be a true Ultrabook, as in light and thin. the NX500 might be out of the question because its basically a MacBook Pro retina...too overpowered and heavy for me.
It has to have at least: 256 SSD, 2 USB 3.0's, SD slot, Touchscreen 1080p or above: I am a photographer & I write a lot, so the keyboard needs to be great and the screen needs to be good. The trackpad can be average, don't really use it.
It has the guts to run Photoshop, Lightroom and probably a few more other adobe software very well. On that note, it should also be able to do some gaming, such as good ol' Guild Wars 2, but THAT's an optional bonus.
The obvious: Core i5 4th gen (or above), 8GB of Ram (or above), over 5 hours of battery life. Has to be very recently announced/released (2014).
Ok, pretty long... Read more

Hi all,

The very first screen that my brand new Asus Zenbook with Windows 10 showed me, was a BSOD. After restarting everything worked, but I keep having BSODs at random intervals.

The error shown is always "IRQL not less or equal", without any specific driver mentioned.

I've uninstalled the McAfee antivirus that came with the laptop - since apparently they often cause this kind of driver issue, but it made no difference.

I'd be grateful for any insights. (Dump files in attachment.)

Answer:IRQL not less or equal on new Asus Zenbook with Windows 10

Please check ASUS for driver updates and update them all.
Please remove the ASUS pre-installed software, it is known for causing bluescreens.

A question because this returned in every dump, are you aware of the fact that your CPU frequency is almost doubled? Do you use any boost program?

Hey,

I've had 4 BSODs since I installed the OS on my Zenbook UX32LA. The RAM has been tested using MemTest86 for a few hours (full run), with no errors reported. All the latest windows updates (except some MS apps I don't want on my PC) are installed, and the drivers are latest too, afaik. The BIOS is latest too. I've updated the Intel HD Graphics driver and the Atheros Wi-Fi driver since the OS installation.

There's nothing common to the particular BSODs (no single user action causing them), at least from my perspective as a user.

I've attached a screenshot of my laptop's hardware configuration and a zip file with the 4 BSOD dumps. If there's any more information that's needed to work this out (specific driver versions and more detailed summary of the hardware come to mind), I'll be happy to post it on request.

Thanks for you help in advance.

Hi!

I have an Asus Zenbook UX301LA which has a very annoying problem. Sometimes after the laptop goes into sleep mode (after closing the lid, inactivity, ...), I am not able to turn it back on.

The power led is blinking, and the power button is not responding. If I however hit space (or any other key), the power led goes solid on, but the display stays black and the laptop is not responsive.
The only way out is force a shutdown (holding power button), and restart.

This only happens in about 1 out of 3 times the laptop goes into sleep mode.

Also, if this problem is occuring, I do not believe that the computer is completely into sleep mode and thus still powered on, as it still is hot to the touch (which it isn't if the sleep works normally).

The problem started when I reinstalled Windows 10 on the machine. It was working perfectly before the reinstall.

Asus Zenbook UX32VD Review - Watch CNET's Video & Read Our Review - page 2

Quote:
All three of the Asus Zenbook models we tested had very solid battery life, but not spectacular. The UX32VD has higher-end components, so it may be forgiven for only running for 5 hours and 13 minutes in our video playback battery drain test (it will certainly run less when the GPU is engaged). The UX32A and UX31A ran for 5 hours and 16 minutes and 6 hours and 16 minutes, respectively. Other ultrabooks can run for 1 to 2 hours longer, but these times should get you through a full day if you close the lid and put the laptop to sleep when not actively using it.

The WiFi of my ASUS Zenbook UX303 works only erratically. Touching it or slight movements may improve signal strength.

To explain, I need to tell the whole story.

In September, just 9 months after purchase, the mainboard broke. I had to send in the notebook and the German technical support center replaced the mainboard. Fortunately they did not wipe the hard drive.

When the notebook returned I noticed that the lid was not assembled 100% properly, it was off by just 1mm. A little ugly but I do need to get some work done and it did not appear to inhibit functionality. Two weeks later the right hinge started to break because of this error in assembly. I had to send in the notebook again. They fixed both hinges, replaced the screen bezel and wiped the hard disk.

When the notebook returned this time I noticed that they had heavily scratched the hinge cover. And here is the core of this story:

Also the WiFi did behave strangley, the connection was a lot worse than before and sometimes only worked when I lifted the notebook 2 inches up from my lap. The behaviour is erratical. Just touching the notebook might boost the signal strength from 1 to 4 bars.
My suspicion is/was that during the hinge assembly they had forgotten to reconnect the WLAN antenna which is mounted in the lid. Or maybe they failed to mount it properly.

I reported those errors and, yes, had to send it in again.
This time they replaced the lid cover but did not bother to fix the WLAN. They did not wipe t... Read more

I hope this is the right place, since I don't know if it is hardware or software.

Bought a new Asus ZenBook Flip about a month ago. I noticed these black streaks before but didn't pay any attention to them. After 2 1/2 weeks the laptop was slow and finally hung itself up. Touchscreen, keyboard and mouse didn't work anymore. Practically frozen. Took it to Asus to repair(there everything worked fine, except for the black streaks. They reinstalled Windows 10. 2 days after I picked up my repaired laptop, I noticed these black streaks again and it seems as if the laptop is slow and hangs itself up shortly. Touchscreen, keyboard and mouse work. Hopefully someone has an idea and can help me to identify this problem.

Is it better to get the laptop repaired or better to get it exchanged?

Thanks for your opinion and thoughts.

I have an ASUS Zenbook UX303UB that I purchased a few weeks ago. It works perfectly when plugged, but for some reason it freezes on me when I am not plugged in (running on battery). It will randomly freeze from anywhere between 10 minutes and beyond. The computer will do a full lock up and not even ctrl-alt-delete works. I have to hold down the power button and restart. There are absolutely zero problems when plugged in, I can leave her on forever.
Any ideas on what is going on? All drivers are updated to the latest and Windows 10 is fully updated as well. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? How should I go about troubleshooting? I would greatly appreciate help and will follow this thread until solved!

I just bought an ASUS Zenbook UX32A, it has an SSD 32 and SATA 500, I deleted the recovery and did a clean install of win7 on the SSD (originally win was on the SATA) and I uploaded all the drivers and did some windows updates.

Problem: the laptop will randomly shutdown once a week or every two weeks, and the boot order will get switched to the SATA. Obviously i will get an error "windows cant boot" etc. I have to manually go in bios and switch it back to the SSD.

Information: I used to have BitLocker enabled until a few minutes ago. A few weeks ago, I reduced the page file size to about 2-4 GB since Windows decided suddenly to eat up 8 GB of my drive with pagefile nonsense. I have since changed it back, as of a few minutes ago. My system has a Sandisk SSD (128GB). My last one failed on me (this laptop is a replacement). I'm running 8.1 pro.

Since school started (early Sept.), I would put my computer to sleep and put it in my bag. Once in a blue moon I'd pull it out and it would be ON and trying to enter the BIOS (doesn't actually enter since I have password enabled). I'd shut down and turn it on again and BitLocker would ask me for my recovery key. I would just shutdown again and restart and things would be fine. Once, it happened while NOT in my bag (ruling out overheating issues). I put my compute to sleep, tried to wake it up, and literally just before I began to type my MS account password, the computer froze and bluescreened. It restarted in the BIOS. The past week or so it happened even more often, and today it happened and asks me to enter my BItLocker recovery key EVERY time I boot up (before Windows would only ask once for the key and forget about it thereafter). And to make things worse, the computer would SHUT DOWN while I was typing in my recovery key sometimes! Anyways, I finally logged in fully decrypted the drive. I reset the TPM and took ownership of it and tried to enable BitLocker again, but it doesn't work. It says... Read more

This is my first post/ request for help on these forums so please forgive my Newbieness if I'm not following the culture on this site.

My Issue: When ever I try to move something to my external display it grows the 100 times the size. I have my display settings set to everything that's recommended (at 250%). But that's not the worst part. The worst part is in Visual Studio 2015, when trying to create form applications in VB, thing is too small. I bought this PC because it was considered to be "One of the best PC's for programming", but has been pretty much useless in my studies and at work. Does anybody have any suggestions?

What I've Tried Already:
- Setting my display settings to 100%(Makes everything too small),
- Switching Graphics cards from Nvidia to Intel

I just bought an ASUS Zenbook UX32A, it has an SSD 32 and SATA 500, I deleted the recovery and did a clean install of Windows 7 on the SSD (originally win was on the SATA) and I uploaded all the drivers and did some windows updates.

Problem: the laptop will randomly shutdown once a week or every two weeks, and the boot order will get switched to the SATA. Obviously i will get an error "windows cant boot" etc. I have to manually go in bios and switch it back to the SSD.

What the fugees is going on here?

I scanned the computer with Avast and did the boot scanner, 100% clean
--- Update form last night:
I just updated my bios and followed instructions from ASUS, and when i restored default settings, the default again when to the SATA drive and i couldn't boot until i switched to the SSD, How do I get my system to recognize the SSD as Default boot?

Answer:SSD and SATA HDD get switched?! Windows boot problem on ASUS Zenbook

What is going on with the system that it randomly will shut down and switch to the SATA while im using it? this is the part that freaks me out and feels like something will eventually break here. #firstworldproblems #newlaptopdangers

I have been experiencing intermittent BSOD when it wakes from sleep on my Zenbook running Win 8.

Have not been able to determine the cause and was hoping the smart guys here would be able to point me in the right direction or at least give me an idea of how to study the memory dumps so I can figure it out.

Answer:Assorted BSOD on Wake from Sleep - Win8 on Asus Zenbook (UX31)

Load the minidumps in windows debugger (windows debugging tools)

It seems you have a problem with your disk or memory.

If you can, replace the hdd (i.e. rip one from an external usb enclosure)

Hi

I have the above brand new computer which I have used for a few months. After the windows icon loads there is about 5 min of inactivity, before the HDD light shows activity, from which it boots normally.

It also takes very long when coming out sleep and hibernation, and often fails to go into ones of these modes at all.

I've read that it's "hybrid SSD" drive sometimes has driver compatibility issues, or that a DRIVER POWER FAILURE STATE error is sometimes responsible, but I haven't seen such an error myself (nor a solution online). I have updated to the latest drivers on the ASUS page but the problem persists

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Hi everyone,
I m looking for some advice and infos about a recent problem with my zenbook UX 32 VD
I should first specify the specs: core i7 @ 1.9Ghz, 10Go RAM, dedicated GeForce GT620M, windows 7 64bit (version 6.1.7601 service pack 1 built 7601)
The problem is it takes a while to boot up?.between 2min and 8min with an annoying black screen before the "windows starting up" logo?.it was not the case before and it should not be the case considering that windows 7 is supposed to be installed on a SSD drive.
I tried a lot of things that people talked about on internet: downloading all the latest drivers for Norton, Nvidia graphics and so on?.I also used CCcleaner in case of registry errors, I did a memory test, I checked for viruses and malmware, I defragmented eveything possible, I cleaned up the drives, I restarted the computer after removing the services programs and the startup programs (using MSCONFIG)?.
And it didn?t change anything, it is still freakin slow to get to the welcome menu?.then the laptop works pretty fine.
I should also mention that I got no response typing F2, F8, F12 or the space bar during the long black screen when starting up the machine?.which is pretty annoying too.
Looking forward for some magician to help me, cheers

If its still the bloated factory preinstalled Win7 then that is a corrupt install to begin with, larded with sponsors' crapware and useless duplicate utilities which throttle and conflict with superior versions in Win7. That's why most tech enthusiasts prefer to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to get the best possible install instead of the worst one which you have. This will also obviously solve your boot problem. Just be sure to make your Recovery disks first so you can delete all partitions during the booted reinstall.

Until then you can remediate the problem some following these steps to Clean Up Factory Bloatware especially establishing a Clean Boot to get the freeloaders off Win7's back, using a free lightweight AV suggested with the Win7 firewall, gradually dumping the programs you realize you don't need or want.

If you still need to troubleshoot the slow boot work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which will also help familizarize you with the system resources, logs, tools, hardware tests, and best practices.

Hi. I?ve been a lurker in the past and have been pointed in the direction of useful tools by this forum. So, let me start off by thanking you for your previous help.

Unfortunately, I?ve got some sort of malware/virus on my 6 year old Windows XP computer that has me stumped. I would appreciate any assistance you could provide.

Here are my symptoms and the actions I?ve taken to date:

About a week ago, I got what I think was the Windows Recovery Virus. I followed the removal procedure from bleepingcomputer and that successfully helped unhide all of my files and I no longer get the fake virus removal pop-up. However, I now get redirected from Google links to unwanted websites.

I have accomplished the browser redirect steps suggested in this forum. But, the latest version of TDSS Killer will not run from my desktop. I?ve tried renaming it with several different random combinations with no success. Interestingly, I have an older version of TDSS Killer on my PC that does run, but it does not find anything to ?cure?.

I have gone through the READ & RUN ME instructions. I tried to go through the detailed instructions thoroughly. The only error I made was first running ComboFix with my McAfee AV and FW on. That caused some errors. I re-ran it with it off with McAfee off and did not have the errors.

My logs are attached. Note that the TDSS log is from an outdated version (2.4.10.1), the latest version wouldn't run.

Thanks in advance... Read more

Answer:Help Request: Google Redirect, can't run latest TDSS Killer

Here are the last few logs. Note that the first scan of ComboFix was with McAfee on, the second scan was with McAfee off.

Thanks again.

I went through the prerequisites and started the malware removal for Windows 7 I have attached the Malwarebytes log and attached logs for Rogue Killer. I ran it twice so I have 2 logs attached for it. I tried to run TDSS Killer but it starts but never really opens. I tried renaming it but that did not work either. I did run CCleaner as part of the prerequisites. I stopped with the removal after finding the MBR. I also attached a MBR Check log. I thought the MBR has to be resolved before proceeding, if this is wrong I apologize in advance. Thank you for your support. You all are the best.

Your MBR is fine. What malware issues are you having? If you are having issues, we need the rest of the requested logs.

What are the differences between a 2010 White unibody MacBook and  2008 Black polycarbonite MacBook? The 2010 Mac has a working logic board but needs a screen, fan, missing ram and needs all new casing (cracks and chips on top and bottom and i'm ocd about not having that).... the 2008 just needs a new logic board and has a good screen, fan and casing.... what is interchangeable between the two? http://news.softpedia.com/news/Wind...cBook-Pro-and-MacBook-Air-Models-476368.shtml

According to the official Boot Camp support document, Apple dropped support for the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system in its new MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch Early 2015 and MacBook Air 11-inch/13-inch Early 2015 models. Only the Windows 8 operating system is currently supported on these models.

This news should not come as a surprise to Mac owners who want to install the Windows operating system from Microsoft on their MacBook computer, alongside Mac OS X, because it is a known fact that Apple drops support for various Windows OSes in the Boot Camp software from time to time.

Boot Camp is a pretty cool software that is included in every MacBook, allowing users to easily and quickly install various versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system and dual boot with the existing Mac OS X operating system that is installed by default.

Only the Windows 8 64-bit is supported on the latest MacBook models
Apple removed support for the Windows 7 32-bit operating system back in 2013, starting with MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch Early 2013 and MacBook Air 11-inch/13-inch Mid 2013 models, forcing users to install only the 64-bit version.

If you have MacBook Air 11-inch/13-inch Early 2014 or MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch/15-inch Mid 2014 or earlier models, you can still install the Windows 7 operating system via Boot Camp. Detailed instructions on how to install Windows on your MacBook are provided here.... Read more

Does anyone know which is the latest Chipset Driver for the Asus P5K Mainboard ? Yes, i checked on the ASUS Website, and though they don't even have a WIN7 driver for that, the one they have for example for Vista would be very old. And I am sure that there is a newer Driver from INTEL.

But I admit, on their Site I am not really sure which is the right one, since they are not really explained well whats for what board.

Anyone help me with that please ?

So recently, I have been encountering problems with my computer lately.
The first has been trying to install the latest update for windows 10, but everytime it tries to install, it always ends up with the " Windows was unable to install updates undoing changes" message. The first few tomes this happened, I thought it was nothing to get worried about. After a few days I started getting black screens everytime I log in to my account. I've waited to see if the desktop would pop up but it took a whole 5 minutes to do so and the home menu wouldn't work either, and when I ran windows powershell, it seemed like it made it worse.

I've tried resetting my computer to factory defaults, but an error would come up saying that it was unable to reset my PC.

Help appreciated

I've got a ThinkCentre M92p (2992B3G) that I bought over 6 months ago. It's a pretty standard setup, and I haven't done anything to the hardware except upgrading it to 8GB of memory and adding a new SSD for my system drive. In addition I purchased an ASUS NVIDIA GT640 PCI-e video card as the default video card doesn't put out much performance for even the most casual of gamers. I'm running on Windows 8.1, with all updates installed. I've always been very tidy, so I've kept myself up-to-date with all the latest Windows Updates, and updates from the Lenovo System Update tool. This setup worked great for several months, until one dreadful night where a new BIOS was presented by Lenovo System Update. I can't for the life of me remember the exact version number of that BIOS, but I do know it was released a week or two before the 14th February 2012. Once the computer booted back up, the display was simply blank; not even a POST-message, and much less any display from the operating system itself. With the PCI-e video card installed I can't the BIOS settings either. Answer:ASUS GEFORCE GT640 not working with the latest M92p 2992-B3G BIOS

I can't seem to edit this post anymore, for some odd reason. So here goes; I found this post in NVIDIA's knowledge base; When installing an after-market graphics card into a certified Windows 8 PC with UEFI enabled, the s... The interesting parts in this post are as follows; When an after-market graphics card is installed into a motherboard with UEFI enabled in the system BIOS, or if the system is a certified Windows 8 PC with Secure Boot enabled, the system may not boot.

UEFI is a new system BIOS feature that is provided on most new motherboards. A UEFI system BIOS is required in order for the Windows 8 Secure Boot feature to work. Secure boot is enabled by default on certified Windows 8 PCs.

In order to get the PC to boot with a graphics card that does not contain UEFI firmware, the end-user must first disable the secure boot feature in the system's SBIOS before installing the graphics card.

Note: Some system SBIOS's incorporate a feature called compatibility boot. These systems will detect a non-UEFI-enabled firmware VBIOS and allow the user to disable secure boot and then proceed with a compatibility boot. If the system contains a system SBIOS the supports compatibility boot, the user will need to disable secure boot when asked during boot processThis leads me to believe that the BIOS update that wrecked my setup was 9SKT58A/9SJT58A, which only contains one change; "Adds support for updating BIOS from a WIN7 BIOS to a WIN8 BIOS". I've... I installed the Realtek HD audio driver from the ASUS download site (P8Z68-V Pro MB) and all was well until I installed an MSI 560TI video card and let it install the Nvidia HD Audio drivers. The problem I have been chasing ever since was the Realtek HD Audio Manager popping up after the system exited extended sleep state (overnight). After much trial and tribulation and several Google Searches I concluded that the Realtek/ASUS HD Audio driver was conflicting with the Nvidia driver(s).

I did what suggested on one of the sites and that was to delete the Realtek HD Audio drivers and just let W7 install the default Microsoft drivers. Problem gone! Now I am curious, what did I give up and if I install the latest Realtek driver for W7 64-bit (v267) from the Realtek site will the Nvidia conflict return?

Answer:ASUS/Realtek, Latest Realtek versus default W7 Audio driver

Generally the Microsoft installed HD Audio Codec does not have all the features the motherboard vendor's sound drivers do. In most cases the actual driver is preferred and should be installed instead of the generic HD Audio Code drivers.

The NVIDIA driver is for the Video and the build in audio for HDMI audio. It should not be interferring with the PC's sound and in this case Realtek. I would uninstall the Microsoft drivers and reinstall the RealTek and see if you still have the problem. Generally a driver causes problems when exiting from sleep mode. Actually on "extended" sleep mode of overnight its really better to just shut down the system and then reboot in the morning. If you want it to be operational when you wake up, the BIOS should have an option for auto power on at whatever time you set.

Hello all, So I've purchased (although not yet received) a new Helix from Provantage.  I chose the i7/8GB/256GB version because I fall into the "more RAM is more macho" camp.  heh The Helix will primarily be used for the office and it's a great device for that.  However, at home I have an ASUS Zenbook UX51VZ at home.  I upgraded it to 12GB RAM, in fact, and it's blazing fast. But I was wondering if the Helix could compete with it.  Here's a brief comparison:  ZenbookHelixCorei7-3612QM Quad corei7-3667U Dual coreClock speed2.1 GHz (3.1GHz Turbo)2.0 GHz (3.2GHz Turbo)CPU wattage35 Watts17 watts (9 watts undocked)RAM12GB DDR3-1600 MHz8GB DDR3L-1333 MHzStorageDual Sandisk SSD drives (128GB + 128GB)Single 256GB SSD (unknown mfg)GraphicsNVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 2GB + Intel HD Graphics 4000Intel HD Graphics 4000 The Zenbook beats it in almost all performance areas, but I'm not sure I'll notice the difference.  I have a Surface Pro right now and it chokes up on graphics-heavy webpages and doesn't do well while I'm running a memory hungry Citrix client.  I'm returning the Surface Pro for the Helix for this reason alone. But the Surface Pro ain't no Helix.  The i7/8GB trumps i5/4GB.     I'm not sure if the power consumption difference is because the Zenbook is a quad core or not.  The dedicated graphics card in the Zenbook is not important to me since I don't render video and am not into g... Sounds stupid but I wasn't able to find this anywhere. I have a 2160p Asus laptop and I was wondering how major of a difference in resolution would it be if I hooked it up to a 1080p monitor. I'm planning to use it for work and movies. 4k monitors are pretty pricey so as of now it's pretty debatable. Appreciated thanks.

Answer:Bluetooth connection problems Zenbook/Windows 10

Is there a button to pair it on the headphones? In win 10 settings, devices, Bluetooth select More Bluetooth options, in the Bluetooth Settings popup tick the box for Allow Bluetooth devices to find this PC. Click Apply OK. See if it can pair then. If you have a list of music tracks try right clicking one of them and select Cast to device and see what shows up.

Recently got a Zenbook Flip UX360UA. It automatically goes into tablet mode when the screen is flipped past 180 degrees. In tablet mode the keyboard and trackpad are disabled. I would like to use the keyboard and trackpad when flipped all the way around.

I've gone settings -> Tablet Mode -> When this device automatically switches to tablet mode -> Don't ask me and don't switch. But the issue persists (It still goes in to tablet mode)

I've played with the other settings too - no luck with any of them.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi folks,
When windows 10 was first released I downloaded it and burned to DVD using the media creation tool from Microsoft.
As windows 10 has now had a major update, and I want to create a DVD with that update on it, without having to reinstall it later, as I have other partitions on my computer to update to 10 as well.
So my query is, does anyone know if I was to download windows 10 32 bit from Microsoft again (using the media creation tool from Microsoft) will it include the latest major update to 10?
Thanks for any help

Greetings!

I have Acer Aspire 5750G. My current BIOS version is 1.07. The latest version is 1.12.

There are a few versions in between. Should I do incremental updates and reach 1.12 or should I just go direct to 1.12?

Many Thanks!

Answer:BIOS - Incremental updates to latest vrsn or direct update to latest?

Bios updates are cumulative, so you only need the latest.

You also don't need to update the bios unless there is a fix in it/them that fixes an issue you may be having. For the most part updating the bios is as easy as updating a driver, only if a bios update goes wrong you can't roll back to the old and you basically end up with a nice paperweight.

I am trying to get this Yoga 14 up to date.  First, I was surprised that runs Windows 10 home vs. pro but that is what it is. However here is my question. The bios on the unit as shipped is 1.2 and is from the JFET43WW family. The latest bios listed is 1.3 from the R05ETxxW family (per the readme) and the filename is r05uj03ww.  Perhaps this is Lenovo's way, but all the prior bios history for that family is under JFETxxWW. Is this the right bios? The latest NIVIDA/Intel driver listed states that " *This driver can be only used on ThinkPad S3 Yoga 14 Broadwell(BIOS ID:JFETxxWW)". So.....can the latest video driver be used with the latest bios which per the readme (and filename) is NOT from the JFETxxWW family? Hopefully I am posting in the right place.  I have been underwhelmed with phone support where "hardware" support will only answer hardware questions and "software support" is "premium" and they want you to pay when this system is only a week old.  Not sure where else to go for answers.  Also have issues with expresscache as....well..they shipped it with windows 10 and with an SSD and no expresscache.  But that is another post.... Thanks, BJB

Answer:Yoga 14 latest NVIDIA driver not compatible with latest 1.3 bios?

Exactly which ThinkPad Yoga 14 do you own please; 20DM, 20DN or 20FY? There are some different BIOS versions depending on which model you have and this may also have a bearing on other components.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/Can-t-Update-BIOS-to-Version-1-3-Lenovo...

Can anyone tell me what the best ad-removal program is? You know, stop popups and kill spyware and the such. I hate pop-ups, they piss me off so much. They make me wanna throw my computer out the window. I have Ad-Aware, but it annoys me.

Answer:Best Pop-up killer?

I've seen/used a number of them and for my money, nothing beats the Ad popup blocker included in Symantec Personal Firewall!

In case you missed the press:
http://www.prweb.com/releases/2007/2/prweb504722.htm

Killer K1 is a more affordable version of the Killer NIC, and is available at select places (such as NewEgg, a [H] supporter) for $149.99 (after rebate).

The difference between Killer NIC and Killer K1:
Killer K1
$179 ($149 for a limited time)
333Mhz NPU
FNA for $30 upgrade.
No Heatsink required due to lower speed.

Killer NIC
$249
400Mhz NPU
FNA
K heatsink

But Killer K1 still bypasses the windows network stack, and it still improves online games with about the same performance (Note: K1 cannot run FNA Firewall or the new FNA Torrent program, unless it has been FNA upgraded ($30 software download).

And if you are wondering, the software download upgrade is Secure (and the file is tied to the specific Killer K1)

As always, I live for your questions!

Answer:$149 Killer NIC (Killer K1)

Now I am one large step closer to buying one.

Question: killer NAV - .vxd

Hello everyone!

I've read threads of NAV users who were experiencing problems with the SYMTDI.vxd file missing, like myself, but none of them could solve mine.
on booting i get a "cannot find a device file..... the windows registry or system.ini file refer to this device file.... try uninstalling...." message, but windows starts up in safe mode and requires a password, which i don't have!
i also get 2 error messages: of Nprotect.exe and Mprexe causing error in module user.exe.
after closing them i sit face to face with a twisted version of my wallpaper, nothing on top of it or below.
does anyone have a solution?
I have W98SE and NAV 2003.

Thank you,
Schniff

Can anyone reccomend a good POP-UP KILLER (preferably freeware).... because some of these pop-ups are getting out of hand.

I get pop-up ads all the time.... but something funny happens... as soon as they POP-UP they immediately minimize to the taskbar. Any ideas why this happens?

So if any of you use a good pop-up killer... let me know which one works best for you.

Thanks in advance

Question: CPU Killer?

Okay, I suppose I should ask...

My brother has an old game he wants to play on the computer. It was made for a 286 or 386 basically. A friend explained that these old games used the clock speed differently somehow; which explained why the game ran at warp ten on this PII 350Mhz.

A little web searching turned up something called "CPU Killer". It's basically designed to bog down the cpu, and therefore, slow down the game to a playable speed. I just wonder if it's okay to use or not.

Does anyone know anything about this? I promised him I'd try to find a way for him to play his "X-Com: Terror from the Deep".

Thanks!

Question: EXE Killer??

Hello,

I visited some of the movie download websites last week and since luck didn't favour me well enough, I was rather infected with a strange kind of virus or whatever we want to call it..The symptoms are as follows:

1. A lot of executable programs cannot be launched or will throw the typical Windows 7 "Program has stopped working" error. This includes Skype, Chrome, Mcafee (but background tasks are running), Malwarebytes, IE (but it works now), etc. & even OTL.exe.

2. Internet browsing speed has slowed down quite a bit. Sometimes the page just doesn't load.

3. Guest windows logon doesn't work. As soon as you click on Guest, it logs you off immediately.

I used the DDS scanning program which fortunately worked and here is the log file. My apologies if I wasn't supposed to run this program. And as always, thanks much in advance for your valuable time for fixing my mess..

Question: Killer Bug

I'll begin with what happened first. After downloading a Windows keygen from a site I had never heard of before (WGA is a nuisance, you see,) I turned off the computer. When I turned it back on, my laptop might as well have been blaring the Lord's Prayer backwards from its speakers. After the taskbar appeared, a couple windows of DOS came up, NTVDM.exe, and 2 or 3 win???.exe's (eg:win50A.tmp.exe) After startup, a little red shield with an X on it said I was infected. My first reaction was "No bleep," then, "wait a second... Windows, SUPPLYING VIRUS PROTECTION?!!" Well, It wasn't Windows. Its source was pipmon.exe, and I found instructions on how to remove it on this site. (Find .exe and .tmp, delete, delete registry file.) Speaking of TMP's there were some of those the next time I started up. I tried clearing the hard drive of all *.tmp*.chk,~*.*, but all the bad stuff stayed. I tried deleting it with Unlocker, but most of it still stayed even after a reboot. I ran something called smitfraudfix, but it couldn't clear the registry. I uncovered several trojans using HouseCall, but removing those didn't do much. The worst has passed, but there is still very much to do. On startup, I get "run dll as an app" errors, and something called "gxneoyqt.exe" is asking for internet access. After I deny it access with ZoneAlarm, several numbered .exe's start asking for access, with new, higher numbered ones appearing all the t... Read more

There is a plug for firefox call "AD Killer" (or something like that)... where you basically right click an ad and goto 'block ad' and it won't show you that ad any more. Is there a plug-in like this for Internet Explorer?

Obviously the translation to 64 bit will mean more power, and more ram support, but if someone installs the 64 bit version, are 32 bit apps backwards compatible?
Is there a good reason to wait until most software is coded to 64 bit? I do understand that a 32 bit app gains nothing from running in a 64 bit enviroment, however, if I have a 64 bit app, and the plug ins are 32 bit I would think I will see some sort of processing increase. thanks,

Stitches

Answer:64 bit a 32 bit killer?

I don't have experience with 64-bit OS or applications, but I would imagine that the 64-bit OS would have a "32-bit compatibility mode", similar to how when WindowsNT was released, it had a 16-bit compatibility mode.

The apps ran in their own memory space, and ran slower than true 32 bit apps (and tended to cause more problems as well.)

Has anyone had any personal experience with the Killer NIC? It looks feasible, and I have read reviews that say it works well on at least some games (i.e. FEAR), but I'd like to know if it works on all games, or if it is that noticable of a benefit. It seems kind of pricey to me, but who knows?

*Edit* Plus it looks cool!

Answer:Killer Pop Ups.

You have NO ACTIVE AV!!!!!!!!!

Do a couple online scans from this list (Post #1)

http://forums.techguy.org/t110854.html

Then get the free AVG 7 install it, check for updates and run a full scan

AVG 7 - http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

Or Avast

http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html

Make sure your have these versions and run these

SpywareBlaster 3.3 http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
AdAware SE 1.05 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
In SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Boot post a new log

It's astonishing what a difference 15 months makes.

That's how long it's been since we last built a gaming rig for $800. Since then, the price war between AMD's ATI division and Nvidia has become a pyre upon which Nvidia's profits have been sacrificed.

Answer:The $800 Killer Gaming PC

LMAO @ article. Anybody who uses Windows 7 RC as their main OS right now is simply asking for trouble. The author of the article does realize that the RC will expire when W7 goes on the market, right? That and the article was obviously written by an Intel fanboy, but I digress... A core2duo over an AMD dual core? Seriously?

Hi
Ive been trying to get rid of some viruses and im pretty clueless about this so I need help. I didn't have any proper antivirus software and just had downloaded malwarebytes and advanced system care and I thought that would be enough anyway it wasn't which I now realise so a few days ago I downloaded avast which found a lot of viruses and a rootkit virus and I deleted a few of them but there were others that were in the windows folder and I wasnt sure if I should delete them and then my laptop deleted avast and I reinstalled it a few times but it kept doing it so just left it.

Just now I downloaded kaspersky tddss killer and it found 17 threats all high risk and again im not sure should i delete them or put them into quarantine. They are all called backdoor.multi.Zaccess.zen. Anyone know what I should do? Thanks.

Which never ended up working and literally raped my computer with it's CID sperm. The next morning i wake up and i have a million CID: ect. pop-ups. I then uninstalled the player, but i guess the damage was done my computer was pregnant with a CID kid. I tried to go to the "add and remove" in my control panel, and remove anything with the word CID in it. The only one i found was CID Help, but when i tried to remove it it said it was already removed and asked if i wanted to remove it from my add\remove list. So i removed it from there also, but it didn't help. I've been searching ways to remove it, but i think i've just made it worse.Im not the sharps knife in the drawer when it comes to computer's. Every day I get pop up windows on my computer even when I am not surfing the net. I am always conneced of course but which pop up window remover program is the best? There are so many.

I find it really amusing however that one of the annoying pop up windows is an advertisment for a program to get rid of them. why would I pay money to someone who does business like this?!?
If there is one that removes spam emails too that would be great to know which. I want one that wont eliminate regular emails. I heard of that happening to people.
