Question: Outlook 2010 crashes when setting up new email account

I'm running windows 8 on an intel i7 machine with 16gb ram.
I just installed outlook 2010 64bit and every time I add an email account Outlook crashes.
No error message - just says "Micrsoft Outlook has stopped working"
Any suggestions?

Dear Friends,
I have problems setting up Outlook 2010 to use the appropriate email account and signature automatically when replying to messages.
I use 3 email accounts, and for each account I have created a distinct signature both for new and reply emails.
The problem is that when someone sends me an email to any of the 3 accounts and I reply, no matter what, Outlook always uses the reply signature of the default email account. It should use the reply signature corresponding to the account the email was sent to.
So far, when replying to messages, I always have to remember to manually switch the ?from? account to match the account the sender used to send me the email.
Outlook is supposed to use the appropriate account when replying to messages. So if someone sends an email to my business email account, and even if that is not the default account, Outlook should use the account and signature I have assigned to reply to messages for that specific account and not always use by default the reply account and signature assigned to the default account.
Please help me resolve this issue so that I do not mistakenly reply to someone using the wrong account.
For example, I do not want to reply to family and friends with the account used for business. If family and friends send emails to my personal email account, Outlook should automatically use that account when replying and thus inserting the reply signature for my personal account.

Welcome to SevenForums.

Lets start with a few questions to eliminate the obvious. I assume you setup the signatures seperately for each account using this panel?

I found some additional information about signatures here: (browse down towards the bootom of the page)

One suggestion I read, was that the signature it picks to use is related to the folder that you currently have highlighted. I'm not entirely sure how that works, perhaps you could experiment with that?

I tried to set up my college email (.edu) in recently installed outlook 2010. I did something about Exchange (I don't remember exactly what I did..) when outlook first popped up, and now it won't let me do anything.
When I open outlook, it comes up with the error message: "The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action. "
I click okay and a box comes up wanting me to enter Microsoft Exchange Server and Mailbox. I try putting my info in but I don't know exactly what to put. If I click okay, an error comes up. "Cannot open your default e-mail folders. The not an Outlook data file (.ost)."
I click okay and it completely closes outlook.
I've tried to click file in the main window, but it either doesn't let me or says, "Not Responding."
How do I fix it? Thanks!

Answer:I'm having an error with setting up my .edu email in Outlook 2010.

Can you try this. Go to Tools > Account Settings > Below email select "New" > Click Next > Enter your information > Finish

Then go back and do this same process, but select remove instead of new.

I have a total of 4 different email accounts, 3 I have had for some time now. The fourth one is new, and I can not for the life of me get it to work. When I add it as a new email account, it get to the part where it want's to log on to server and send a test message, I get a pop up asking me to enter my user name and password for the following server, over and over again. I have not had these issues with my other accounts, and I know the password is correct because I use the same password for all of my accounts. I have tried to add this new account numerous times to no avail. I have double checked everything in both my outlook account as well as my online account.

Try changing your user name to something else. It's possible the user name you are using is already being used by someone else on that email server.

Hello. can anyone help.
I am trying to add a POP email account to Outlook 2010. I've established network connection but cannot retrieve the Outlook Test message. An error box comes & says unable to connect to the server. 550.5.7.1 message content. I have had this POP account on previous versions of Outlook 2010, & it was ok I am puzzled.

Without knowing more about your mail server name and such.
Have you tried to Ping your mail server? like from the run cmd prompt ping
I ping to verify that the server is on-line and responding.

You could double check all the options in outlook setup email accounts to make sure that
you have spelled everything correctly, that sometimes is the problem where mispelling will
mess you up.

also the more settings options will have to be looked at to make sure that the boxes are checked correctly.

These things can get tricky if you misspell, many mail servers want your complete email address for the logon userid..

Hi All,
I came across with a problem with setting up email accounts in outlook 2010 on windows 7.
It always says "unable to connect to the server" - both pop and smtp the same.
I'm sure that it might be something silly but I've tried everything. Interestingly on other computer with XP and Novell Evolution it works with the exactly same settings. So does on my Linux computer. I've tried to install thunderbird and it works as well. Only Outlook seems to have a problem.

It requires name/password authentication with different name and password for pop and smtp.
I've tried to set up my Gmail account in Outlook2010 which I never had a problem with and the result is the same.
Any idea where the problem could be?

Under Win 7, I have Outlook 2010 installed with 3 email accounts. When I open Outlook it searches each account for new messages. I would like it to search only one of them.

Is there anyway I can do this?

Hi all. I just installed Outlook 2010 and created 3 email accounts, 2 from Hotmail and the other from my ISP (cablevision). It seems that my folders from Hotmail came over but not those from my ISP. Should they have? Also, how do I import my contact into Outlook? I certainly don't want to re-enter them again. Thanks. Alan

I have an unusual problem.

I need to change my email account within Outlook but when I go to 'Account Settings' there are no accounts there, and so nothing to change.

Hello. I've been using Outlook since 1998 and I think I am hitting "the wall" with this particular problem.A couple of months ago I noticed that MS Outlook 2010/64 bit with Windows 7 OS was acting a wee bit unstable as it was crashing periodically when I would open an email. It was a minor annoyance that I just worked around. About a month ago, I discovered that if I opened the reading pane view for viewing email, the program would crash immediately. And now, Outlook has become a door stop as within the past week, I can no longer open any emails as the program crashes each and every time.I happened to run a utility program called "Mini Tool Box" yesterday on a "malware hunt" (a process I learned through this forum) which reports everything that is running on your PC. It also reports faulting applications, which in my case was Outlook 2010. I took the pertinent data from this report and sought a solution. A forum that I came across advised to run the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe). I did so and the program found errors (it does not quantify what errors or how many errors if found). I let the program run, rebooted, and Outlook continued to crash as before.
Note:  The crashing of MS Outlook 2010 has occurred without provocation from changes in my system.  I have not added, deleted, any programs.  I do a weekly defrag and a sweep with a spy bot and C. Do you have any Outlook add-ons enabled? Try disabling or removing them.
You can also try going into Control Panel>Programs and Features, select Outlook and click Repair.
Just on the off chance your default font in Outlook is Helvetica:
The 0xc0000005 error code can be caused by a number of issues. Does the error code only occur with the Outlook.exe file? The likely cause is a problem with the way the program was installed or updated. If not, it could be anything from malware, to damaged system files, to bad RAM or drivers.

Hi All,
Well I finally was able to get my Office 07 to install and work, and now I have come to another Hurdle......First let me tell you that this version of office is the Enterprise Edition of Office 2007, It was given to me with my companies permission to install on my home PC as I do a lot of work from home....the reason I tell you this is because I am not sure if the Ent Edition is diferent in any way! So my new problem is that when I try to set up my email accounts in Outlook I go into Tools/Account Settings then New under the email tab....I then get an "Auto Account Setup" Page with a "Manually configure server settings" Checkbox option at the bottom.....So When I try to use Auto setup and input my email account settings, it fails to create the then when I check the box to manually configure and hit next it opens a "Choose E-mail Service" page that has 3 options with radiel buttons...The first being "Internet Email" (pop, imap...etc) the second is "Microsoft Exchange" and the third is "Other"....My problem is the only option it will let me choose is Microsoft Exchange, and the other two are Greyed Out and unselectable!

BTW I am currently using Windows Live Mail for my default email client, in case this has any bearing on my problem.

I found this but I don't have the registry keys listed and I am using Enterprise Edition also. Maybe the keys only show up if the customized config file is used. Worth a shot.

Hi - I am running Outlook 2010 on a Win 7 Professional 64 bit system.

I have been running basically the same configuration successfully for over a year now, with multiple email accounts. Everything worked fine up until this morning, when I was sending a series of emails with attachments. Each email's attachments totalled up to 6 mb, and the grand total of all of the attachments was about 24 mb.

Everything went smoothly up until my last email, and it just sat in my outbox and wouldn't go anywhere. I eventually sent it with a different account with a different ISP.

I have tried sending other emails on the same account, some without attachments, some with small attachments, but it appears that the account is "broken" for sending email. I can still receive email on all accounts and send email from every other account.

I have double-checked the settings for the troublesome account and when I use the Test Account Settings button everything appears to work fine as it successfully sends the test message.

I found a reference to a built-in limit for Outlook attachments of 20 mb, and ran the Microsoft fixit which removes that limit, but it had no effect.

One curious thing is that when I hit the send button, which places the email in my Outbox, the email does not have the italicized font which indicates an unsent message as was always the case up until now.

I had a look at the Outlook add-ins that were active and disabled the iCloud and iTunes add-ins. Everything seems to be working at this point.

There was an iTunes update a day or so ago. During the installation Apple does not even mention that they will be messing with your Outlook installation.

Once again Apple screws up Windows applications.

I can't configure my outlook2010 account. I installed office2010 professional plus. However, I try to add internet e-mail account on outlook2010. it's not available to select internet e-mail. Do someone know how to fix?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

During the Office 2010 installation you have the option to choose whether to have everything installed to your computer, whether to install just some of the options, whether to install on first use or not install a particular option such as Outlook.

Can you remember which options you chose?

You can always reinsert your Office DVD and choose the repair option or uninstall it, and then re-install choosing all the options.

My computer has ME and my wife's is running WXP. I am on the internet & she is networked thru me. Using a LinkSys(BEFSR41)
Networking works fine, no problems. My only problem is setting up her E-Mail. I am a little timid about it. Where and how do I do it? She would like to use her own Mail Acct. She does have Outlook Express. The only thing on the page is the welcome page.

When multiple accounts are added on Outlook 2010 and you create a new email, autocomplete in the 'to' field shows suggestions from every account. Is it possible to only show suggestions relevant to the account the email is being sent from.

For example, if I had my personal account and a customer services account, when I go to send an email from my personal account, every email address who has ever communicated with the customer services account shows which is quite risky.

Have you looked in the help section of outlook. The only thing i can suggest at the moment, is click the contacts in outlook,and then the little arrow next my contacts, there you will find yor email accounts with suggested contacts and contacts, see what happens when you try that.

I've just upgraded to Windows 7 and have installed Office 2010 which I also had on Vista, in Vista however my email ***** was part of personal folders, but now they are separate, I'd like not to see a separate menu for ***** but instead have all my emails under the Personal Folders menu, any ideas?

I am using Outlook 2010 on W7 64 in my home office. All my email accounts are POP3. My part-time work wanted me to use an email account on their Exchange server (2003). I used the email account setup in my Outlook to set it up successfully. Outlook searched out the Exchange server and set up the account.

I closed Outlook and when I reopened it, my Favorites were gone, all POP3 accounts were shuffled in the left pane, all my previous accounts now funneled all emails into one Inbox, and all my Rules were gone. When I tried to redo the Rules, Outlook had changed so that the Rules now applied to ALL the Inboxes for all accounts and did not have the same rules dialog as I had been used to. There was no way to recreate my rules or separate out my POP3 accounts. Now all my email is dumped into one Inbox and I have to manually sort out the messages.

Thinking that the Exchange account was to blame, I deleted the Exchange account, but to no avail. I had to reconstruct my Favorites (no big deal) but there is still no way to redo the Rules and all my mail still goes to the main Inbox.

Is there any way to get back to the way it was? Thanks.

I have recently changed my ISP to BT from Eclipse. Previously Outlook 2010 was configured to allow emails to be downloaded from the Eclipse servers and to enable me to send emails using Outlook 2010 using my Eclipse email address. I also have Outlook configured using IMAP to enable me to download emails from Gmail. I can no longer send emails using my eclipse email account.

Can someone help me to reconfigure Outlook so that I can send and receive emails using the Gmail servers from Outlook 2010 as my primary email source.

I wish to carry on using Outlook 2010 as I have many saved email folders in the account.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

You select that option only if your organisation uses Office 365 and you want to set up your workplace email in Outlook 2016.

I installed Windows 8 on Christmas Day and I skipped the email account setup parts. I never used any APPS yet, in fact I removed everything app-related from my start screen including notifications, etc.

I have used the Classic Shell so far, but today I thought I'd set up the Live email account login.

While I was setting up the app account I kept getting emails from the live account manager to confirm what I was doing and I confirmed each one.

The last thing it asked to 'Trust this PC'. I did so and my machine name appeared on my Microsoft account profile page under "Trusted PC".

But when I restarted I could no longer log in with my local account or the new Live email account.

I logged in as Administrator and saw that my local account name was changed from my username to <[email protected]>, my live account ID. It would not allow Administrator to change the account name or my password.

I tried to log in with the email and Live password, but it said I could not log in with his PC and that I need to resolve the issue with the live account on-line.

I had a password reset disk (USB drive) and I used it. It started up the reset wizard and I put back my old password. It finished with no error but I still could not log in.

Finally, I logged in as Administrator and restored my Acronis system image from yesterday. Then everything was back to normal.

I have no idea what happened, I was very careful doing each of these steps.

Was this a new account? or did you use the switch to a Microsoft account?

I have several Local and Live accounts on my system for testing, and I do not have Live Essentials installed
All of my accounts work perfectly. And across PC's, as I have a desktop also setup with a couple of different and same accounts.

It is possible that Chrome caused an issue. and it is possible you need Live Essentials to use chrome properly. I don't know as I forbid Chrome being installed on any of my PC's.

Hi, firstly please bear with me as i'm new to this. I'm trying to setup the email on our virtual server through cpanal and using Thunderbird 3 (although i did try it with Outlook 2007 and the same results.)

Using the given Incoming and Outgoing mail server info given ( and the mail server username, I get a failed to find error (using both POP3 and IMAP). If I change that too the SSL settings for Incoming / Outgoing (, it works and autofinds Connection Security as STARTTLS and finds the ports too. With this I can send emails fine, but I am not getting incoming emails, and I don't know enough about it too see what I'm doing incorrect, any help would be great, thanks.

I posted this on yahoo answers first, but the only response I got was "restart your outloook and try later." *facepalm* Glad to have found a place more dedicated to such problems.

Hi; I've read through posts but I didn't seem to find anything pertinent. My office has created new email accounts for everyone, and I've set mine up on my laptop using Microsoft Office Outlook. I've been using an aol screenname to send/receive emails. I'd like to have my emails that are incoming to my AOL account automatically forward to my new email account for reading (maybe temporarily, maybe permanently), while I am in the process of notifying all my correspondents of the change.

Any way to set up AOL to automatically forward my incoming messages, or to set up Microsoft Office Outlook to import them automatically? Or, is there no way?

Also, any easy way to ensure that, if I read my emails on another webmail viewer like roundcube, squirrelmail or horde (three options allied with the agency that is re-doing our website), that my emails will still come up on my Microfsoft Office Outlook email list?

Good morning everyone,
So the other day something incredibly weird had occurred. I was receiving email normally on my phone, came into work, logged in, and began working on my trouble tickets. I noted that when I went back to Outlook to view an email, the email in particular was gone... and then all were gone. My folders, and emails within them, still remained the same. I attempted to research what on Earth happened but I haven't been able to find anything specific to my issue.
I'm using Outlook 2010 connected to an Exchange 2010 server for work. Outlook was setup as cached exchange mode but that has since been changed. The emails also disappeared from my phone's inbox too... it's as if everything was deleted and Exchange figured that's what it should be and synced everything that way. Deleting my OST didn't resolve or resync anything. I ran the scanpst tool on the ost file which reports 93 errors, but as I read the scanpst tool can't repair an OST and thus doesn't do anything.
Does Outlook have some sort of log that may explain what on Earth happened? I can't find any error messages or any other reasons for what may have happened. My view settings weren't changed, nothing has changed on my end. There is no spyware / malware installed on the PC as far as I can tell. No real issues in the Sync issues folder other than a Forms syncing issue which seems to be related to Exchange needing a patch (but can otherwise be ignored).

Are you the only person using that Exchange server who has this issue? Check with the IT department to see if they can recover the emails in your mailbox from the server. It's possible they recently did some maintenance on the mail server that caused this issue. That fact that both Outlook and your phone are having this issue points to this being an Exchange server problem, as Outlook uses autodiscover and MAPI while your phone uses ActiveSync to connect to the server.
Do you have access to your email using Outlook Web Access? If so, log in and see if the emails are there. If not, it's definitely a server issue.
If your mail is still on the server, one thing you could try is re-enabling the cached Exchange mode, saving the change, and then restarting Outlook. The last thing to try is to delete the email account profile and recreate it. Make sure to get the proper settings from IT if you don't already have them -- although since you are using Exchange and autodiscover, that's usually just a case of entering your username and password when you recreate it.

I have purchased a domain name and have a friend with an ISP company that is hosting the site and email for the site. It is completely different from the regular dial up settings I use but does dial up through the regular one???. Had it set up but have had to reformat hard drive and reinstall all settings lost. Can anyone help with the set-up? I can't even figure it out with the set-up wizard.....

I have windows 7. I down loaded Windows Live to set up my client e-mail account. Every thing went fine and works fine. But now I am trying to set another computer and just cant get the setting right so it will work. To be honest I dont remember what information I entered on what line. How can I view my settings on my first computer to see exactly how I did it?

For personal reasons I am considering setting up a new web based email account. I understand that the process is straightforward, however, I would like to continue to use Outlook express to both receive and create emails.I am really not sure how to go about this. Any guidance would be of help.

I don't even know if I can phrase this question correctly.
My daughter has just taken a new job, and she needs to receive email at a work email address that she has to set up for herself. No one in her office knows how to do this.

Her office computer is a Mac, and she wants to route her incoming mail to the Mac equivalent of Outlook Express or Outlook. She wants to be able to set up the address as [email protected].

Now here's where it gets confusing. The magazine does have a web page -- -- but they don't seem to receive mail at -- the magazine's email address is [email protected].

As near as I can make out, the woman who had the job before her somehow had her mail routed through Yahoo. Is this making any sense to anyone? My daughter really needs an answer to this, and she doesn't have any computer experts of her own to turn to.

I have a gmail account which I want to send to Windows Live,using IMAP, I have gone through the set up instructions, but when I try to get my emails, my log on details are rejected, I have checked and double checked details, all are correct, I have downloaded updated from Microsoft, but it makes no difference, Can anyone help.

Yesterday, my Outlook (2010) stopped retrieving e-mail from the Comcast server.  When I tried to fix it today, it still wouldn't work.  All the settings were correct, but it wouldn't retrieve my e-mail.  I deleted the account and recreated it.  Now, Outlook points to a new .pst file instead of my old Outlook.pst file, named [email protected]  To make matters worse, it doesn't delete the mail off the server.  Before, when I would open Outlook, it would download new message to my Inbox and delete them off the server.  The new messages would stay permanently in my Outlook inbox.  No more.  Now if I manually delete one through my Internet browser, it also deletes it out of my Outlook Inbox.  It’s as though the new account is just a window to the Comcast e-mail server.  I tried changing the Root Folder Path on the Advanced tab of the e-mail account settings to point to the location of my Outlook.pst folder, but that made no difference.  I also tried deleting a recent Microsoft update (KB3054976), but this did not help, either. This is a complete disaster for me, as I can't even send e-mail now, except through the server.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I figured this out.  When I reconfigured my e-mail account in Outlook, I used IMAP settings instead of POP3.  This was not how I did it before.  IMAP works great if one wants to keep all e-mail out on the server and access it from various devices.  That isn't what I do.  I changed the profile to POP3 and the poblem was solved.  Still don't know why it initially failed two nights ago, though.

I just checked my emails to find an email from myself, claiming to be from Paypal saying I need to update my payment information. Now obviously I haven't clicked the link or anything, but does anyone know how this could have happened? I'm running a full AVG scan on my main computer now and afterwards I will change my Microsoft password, but I'm still incredibly worried as I'm extremely careful with my passwords etc.

I have Outlook on my XP laptop and have made the settings for email (AOL) [imap and smtp, etc] and it works fine...I can send/receive normally.I've tried to set this up on my Win7 desktop and have copied the settings exactly as per the laptop, but it won't set up completely. It gets to the 'test email' step then fails. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? On the laptop I'm using comodo firewall, & avast free a/v, but on the desktop I'm using windows defender as firewall, and avast free as a/v, just in case this might be the issue?

I have just set up an email account for my wife in Thunderbird.
The address takes the form as follows

The problem I am having is that I now have the following in the side panel
Inbox (2)
Dxxxxx Pxxxx which I do not want or need and is empty
Local (2) which is a copy of the first Inbox (2)
Drafts (1)
various folders
Dxxxxxx Pxxxx which again is empty and not needed
Local This is a special account but without any identies associated with it.
How can I get back to just one Inbox, and delete all the folder with Dxxxxx Pxxx and also delete the second Local folder. I want all the emails no matter to whom they are address in the top Inbox.

Everything appears to be set-up on the 123-reg website as per their instructions.

I have entered all details on Microsoft Outlook 2003 as follows:

When trying to send an email via Miscosoft Outlook 2003 using my new email address I receive the following error message:

I can find no reference to this error on the 123-reg help system and don't know what I need to do to rectify it.

First of all I am a computer novice. I am using XP Pro. I recieved the following error after setting up my email account:

Send Test e-mail message: the specified server was found, but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct...


Find outgoing mail server(SMTP): Outlook could not connect to the outgoing mail server (SMTP). The problem could be the server name or port, or your server may not support SSL....

My server port numbers: pop3 = 110, smtp = 25.

unhecked = this server requires an SSL-secured connection (pop3 & smtp).

SMTP authentication = unchecked.

Logon using SPA = unchecked.

Nothing on the www seems to help.

I'm running Windows 7 and just installed Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 on my work pc. i accidently skipped through the wizard set up and as a result cant even get into Outlook. I need a POP3 account but when going through the wizard I must have hit Microsoft Exchange Server. The Message that comes up is:

'The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.'

How can I go back to access the wizard set up again when I cant get into Outlook?

Yes, I just recently installed Microsoft Office 2010 Pro onto my computer. I have run into a bit of a problem. I wanna make Microsoft Outlook 2010 the default email client for my user side and I wanna leave Outlook Express as default for another user on my computer. I cannot seem to figure out how to do this because once you pick a default email program on one user desktop it also makes it the default for other users on the computer. We are running Exchange 2003 SP2 and our clients have Office 2010. Our Outlook profiles are created automatically by using Group Policy to set a registry key which points to a PRF file with all the Outlook settings. Lately, many of our users are reporting that their emails are getting stuck in the Outbox. If you look at their Outlook profile, they have two Exchange accounts listed. You cannot delete either of them; it gives a message that this is the default email account.
The immediate solution is to recreate the user's Outlook profile. This allows the stuck email to send. The real issue is that this keeps occurring. Recreating the Outlook profile sometimes fixes the problem for a long time, months maybe. But other times the problem occurs the next day. This is happening with users who have established Outlook profiles as well as new users logging into their PCs for the first time. I've attached the code from our PRF. Any help is appreciated, as we have around 400 active users and we're constantly chasing after this issue.

Couple steps you may apply...
1. Repair the offline file with a Microsoft utility called SCANOST.exe. I’ve seen this file reside in a number of different locations, mainly within Program Files. It might be best to search for it with Windows or Google Desktop. SCANPST.exe will also work, though you’ll have to go digging for your outlook.ost, which should be near c:\Documents and Settings\ %profile%\ Local Settings\ Application Data\ Microsoft\ Outlook\ outlook.ost. If your file is significant in size, you’ll save a lot of time with the repair operation by not creating a backup. Because if the repair finishes successfully and Outlook still bombs, you’ll need to.
2. Shutdown Outlook completely, including any runaway outlook.exe processes in the task manager. Open Mail in the Control Panel and before you delete your profile completely, write down the server settings! There’s no need to worry about backing up your mail as it’s stored on the Exchange server. (Essentially, you’re deleting that outlook.ost when you drop your mail profile.) Now, start Outlook and it will create a new profile, where you’ll configure the server with the information you wrote down previously.

I am looking into how best to automate the setup of users email accounts when we migrate to Outlook 2010. Specifically, I am creating IMAP accounts. We do NOT use Exchange. We have a third party email server. I can get it to do most of what I want, but cannot work out how to have it populate the 'Full Name' field. Trying to get Outlook 2010 set up after windows 7 (64bit) reinstall. In the left pane I have two sets of inbox out box etc. One shows a send receive button at the top right the other doesn';t. The one that dioesn';t is the one where new email are coming in. How can I get back to one set of inbox sent etc WITH the send/receive button?

So I have been trying to setup an exchange server account for Outlook 2010 and have tried creating new profiles with various settings but the issue I am running into is a security dialog box that pops up when I am creating a new account. My server and everything are correct and the box is Windows Security, Mail Application and asks for my password for my computer. I am the Admin and I type in the password but the box just continually pops up like I am inserting the wrong password. I have tried my computer's password and the password for my email account on my school's Microsoft Exchange Server. Nothing works. The first time the box pops up it has the username for my email the second and all times after that it has my computer's name in it. Can I turn off this security setting? I get repeated error messages to reconnect to my email server, AOL, with name and password. I am using Windows 7 with Outlook 2010 on a new Dell desktop. The error also occurs on an older HP desktop upgraded to Windows 7 and Outlook 2010. I have tried the creating a new Outlook profile as described in Microsoft Article 290684. Still happens. I have no problem staying on AOL with Internet Explorer. Could it have something to do with my firewall settings? One computer has McAfee and the other has Norton. This problem seems to come up frequently, with questions on many sites, but no solutions, even on this forum. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

In left pane, click "Manage your credentials"
Click "Add a Windows credential"
In the top bar enter the name of your Incoming (POP3) Mail Server

Click 'OK'

Now try Outlook. You may be prompted for your credentials just one more time but that should be it (hopefully).

I've installed Windows 8.1 Home Premium on my parents laptop and I'm now trying to set up their email account.

It is a non MS account which Windows 8 doesn't seem to allow me to create. I've searched for a solution but they seem to require the Local Group policy to be edited and as far I've researched home premium doesn't include the management function to do so.

Does this mean if you are using Windows 8.1 Home Premium you are tied to using a MS mail account.

Certain e-mail messages crash Outlook 2010. Even if the message is only highlighted Outlook stops responding so I have to go to task manager, end task, restart Outlook. This just started in the last 10 days or so. I've searched and searched for soution. I've gone to add/removeprograms, selected M/S Office, then CHANGE. I then restarted but problem still exists. I cannot even delete those messages. Have gone offline and tried to delete but that doesn't work either. Program still crashes. Hoping you guys have a solution.

I have recently purchased a HP Laptop and its running Windows 7, I also have a HP Desktop running XP. My internet connection is through a BT Home Hub with an attached remote hard drive which I can see from both computers. cable on desktop and wireless on laptop. I'm pretty green when it comes to technical set ups.

I have just purchased Microsoft Office Home and business and have installed on both machines, I would ideally like to start using Outlook (currently use Thunderbird on the desktop to download my Bt/Yahoo emails (5 family email accounts)) I have heard that I can set up outlook on my remote hard drive so I can use outlook on both the desktop and the laptop and sycronise all of the different email accounts i.e. I can look at my emails on the laptop without the desktop being on.

Is this achievable and if so does anyone have a step by step guide????

IMAP works nearly like a corporate Exchange setup, where your e-mail is resident on the mail server, and each of your client systems can connect in and manage it. I use my own domain for e-mail, and I access it through Windows Live Mail on three separate computers.

It sounds like you just need to enable the option in Outlook to leave a copy of the messages on the server, if they are POP3. I don't know if Yahoo allows IMAP, but if it does, I'd use that. Outlook also doesn't handle multiple accounts as well as some of the other products out there.

I tried to set up Microsoft Outlook to read my Yahoo POP 3 and IMAP and this is what i typed in for the required slots:
As account type I put in POP 3 (the 1st time and then did the below again this time with IMAP) then.
incoming mail server:
outgoing mail server:
The above found on the yahoo page regarding this subject.
Followed by my correct username (the full email address and correct password but in testing the account settings in outlook
The message was: "Log onto incoming mail server (POP 3) failed" and the same thing for the testing of email sent/received.

All the new e-mails I create in Outlook 2010 use Rich Text Format and are formatted in the default font I set up- Aerial 12 pt. However incoming e-mails are invariably created in HTML so when I try to reply to them they doesn't seem to be any way to also use Aerial 12pt by default, the editor forces you to use the pre-set Times New Roman font. Is there any way of changing the default font when replying to e-mails created in HTML?

If I choose to save an attachment that has been mailed to me, the default location is always:


I would like to nominate a different location. I have searched the Options, but cannot find anywhere to change this location.

Can anyone help with this?

Like this:Open Registry Editor (regedit), browse to HKEY_CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Options
Right click an empty spot on the right pane
Choose New > String Value
Rename the String Value you created to DefaultPath
Double click DefaultPath
Fill in new value data typing the full path of the new default Save As location

Restart Outlook, should work now.

I have several business email addresses. I have just created a new one, but I can't change the 'email from' address. I set a new contact up for it so I could select it via 'other email address" but the next dropdown box down, the 'send email using' still doesn't contain this new email address.
It has its own folder into which email is delivered, but starting from there still doesn't help fix the problem.
I hope this makes sense.

Okay, I have had this problem several times and now I want to know what is causing the problem. In outlook you can add certain folder to your favorites so that they appear like short cuts at the top of the navigation window. But from time to time different imap short cuts don't appear and then I have to close and restart to get the short cuts to reappear.

Any ideas as to why?

Also if you go to the inbox, if that is one in your favorites, and right click it gives you the option to remove from favorites even though it is not displayed. After removing and adding will also show them back at the top. But this is a pain in the back side.

I am starting a new thread. Last week I posted a complexsituation with captures attached of a serious issue with Outlook 2010. Before I started work I created a Acronis TIBimage ? and as I worked ? and degradation developed, tweaking Outlook 2010, Ihad to repeatedly resort to that original image to get back to the originalstarting point/.

I have managed to get Outlook 2010 working except for thisone issue. Please look over the captures attached. It deals with Brent?s emailaccount ? listed in duplicate.

In my experiments I keep ending up with two accounts. InControl Panel/Mail/Email tab is listed the working Brent email account. Thataccount is not marked as Default. Because in Mail/Email Brent account is notmarked as default I have issues. That working Brent account that not marked asDefault I can send and receive.

There are two Brent email accounts. Two exact accounts -with a slight variable. I have in Mail/Emailthis account:[email protected]

In Mail/Data File I have this:

[email protected]

If [email protected] marked as Default I would have no issues with the Brent account.

Because the [email protected] marked as default that creates the problem. And I cannot delete the [email protected] in Mail/Data File. If I could delete the Default [email protected] Iwould then be able to mark [email protected] Default.

I rarely use the Control Panel > Mail and profiles when setting up Outlook as POP3 or IMAP. I just leave the profile as the default (Outlook I think.)

For POP3
Install and open Outlook. Continue without email support. It will create a default Outlook.pst in Documents > Outlook Files.
File > Open > Open Outlook Data File and open any and all my transferred .pst
File > Account settings > Data Files and assign the default to whichever I want
Close outlook and reopen with new data file as default.
Right-click the default Outlook file it created and close. Then I delete it.

Now I setup my POP accounts in Account settings email accounts making sure to point to my default pst as I like all mail coming into 1 inbox.

Have not had any issues doing it this way.

So I have a problem with my office computer. Outlook 2010 has worked fine on it for at least a year, but has suddenly started showing the error "Microsoft Outlook has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Of course, I've run Check Solutions and there are none.

Outlook is configured only to connect to our local Exchange server -- no other accounts. I've tried all of the obvious things, such as running Outlook in Safe Mode (holding Control or running outlook.exe /safe), but it still crashes. Every once in a while, it will open for a few minutes... but then eventually crashes. I've disabled all of the plugins (even though I suspect that isn't a problem as it still crashes in Safe Mode)... but still no good. The only antivirus on the computer is Security Essentials. I went ahead and went into Control Panel -> Mail and deleted the whole profile and started over. It worked fine until it finished downloading all of the data from the Exchange server and then crashed again. Frustrated, I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows... AND IT'S STILL HAPPENING. There is hardly anything installed on the computer yet (Office, LogMeIn, and Chrome) but the thing is still crashing. After I bring up the screen for a new appointment and fill in the information I get Outlook has stopped working and is searching for whatever. This happens if I catagorize an event or do not use the catagory. It is becomming so annoying that I am considering finding something other than Outlook or just a simple "To Do" list. I am at my brothers trying to get outlook to manage his mail and we are having a few problems.We want to use outlook 2000 to connect to his msn account.We have been to tools/accounts/add/mail and followed the prompts.we chose pop3 and smtp options and continued by then putting in the msn account details and password (the account details did not have at the end though)and then chose connect through his phone line.His internet connection is an ipex broadband connection through a speedtouch modem.It then asks us for a telephone number we have not got?We have already chosen the connect through LAN option and seen it through to the finish but then outlook will not connect to the server.Any help would be gratefully received.Thank you

I could read my emails this morning, but as I deleted my work email (exchange) and reinstalled it, my email and calendar disappeared. Trying to add the account again, I get the message that the account is already connected. Have been searching the web for answers, but not able to find any. I have a Windows 10 phone (Verizon 735), a couple of Windows 10 laptops, and annual Office 365 subscription. Just a home user and have all my Contacts/Calendar in Outlook, but don't have an Outlook email account....just AOL accounts which I get via Imap/Pop.
In past, I setup to sync across laptops and phone but sketchy at best. Just got notifications to "Re-connect Outlook 2016 ". Deleted old Outlook account and added new account....tried no hotmail this time. Outlook came up great...only 1 calendar!!!!! However nothing syncing with phone. Assume still need hotmail?
All I want to do is have my Outlook contacts and calendar synced with all my devices. Assume this should be very basic as guess all this is on "My Cloud"? Also, should be the minimum if Windows phone has any chance. Appreciate any help.

I have always had bother sending mail as I use two accounts; Demon and Yahoo. My internet connection is BT ie Yahoo.In Outlook 2007 I selected account in the top left hand corner of a mail and selected "yahoo" and no problem sending for some years.Same difficulty in terms of posting provider with Outlook 2010 but I cannot find the "select account button" anywhere.Can someone tell me where to look or how to change please? I can't get my outlook account settings to open. I click on file/account settings and nothing happens. The add account button works, the mailbox cleanup and rules and alerts buttons work. I've tried the following:

1. Open Outlook in safe mode - no result
2. Open Outlook as administrator - no result
3. Open send/receive and folder tab - right click on account and select account properties - no result
4. Open File/Options/addins/go disable all addins - no result

I'm stuck. Any ideas

Did you realize you need to click both Account Settings buttons, first one opens the second one:

The sequence is File > Info > Account Settings > Account Settings. The second Account Settings button that opens beneath the first one when it is clicked is easily taken as just a tooltip, but it really is a button you need to click.

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping someone will be able to shed some light on an issue I'm having with Outlook 2010 concerning multiple email accounts.

I run a small home based business and have 3 seperate web mail address ([email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]) To save time I wanted to have my email managed by Outlook 2010 instead of having to log into the 3 accounts to check on new messages.

I set up the first account (myname) in Outlook easily and can send and recieve emails to that address. I then set up new accounts in Outlook for [email protected] and [email protected], by going to 'File' and 'Add Account'.

Each account name appears as a separate entity on the left side of Outlook, with it's relevant name followed by Inbox etc. However, the inboxes for the 2 new accounts only contain emails for the [email protected] inbox and I'm not recieving email for the 2 new accounts. The server test didn't flag any errors either. I have looked in 'Account Settings' and 'Data Files' and each account has it's own seprate data file such as C:\Users\My Computer Name\Documents\Outlook Files\[email protected] but I can't figure out how to make the incoming mail for each address go into their respective separate inboxes in Outlook.

I'm running Vista Ultimate (64) on my desktop and Windows 7 (64) on my laptop and have the same issue on both machines.

Anyway, I've searched the internet already for answers. but since i'm not a techie it's really hard for me to determine which is which.

OK, so here's my PROBLEM. I need to open emails on my deactivated Outlook 2010. So my previous company told me that it's OK for me to keep my computer but since i left I am no longer able to open the whole program. On the start button if I type in a certain email, it still shows up and has headlines, so i know it's still there. Even the most latest ones before i left. (until jan 2015)

There are certain files there that i need to get and i really need somebody's help to get it.

If in case it is not possible anymore, i have a copy of the old pst.file (until aug 2014) we switched over to ms exchange. Can somebody point me how i can copy that over to either my microsoft live mail (it's not that good) or help me copy that over my mac mail (if that is better)

Thanks for your help guys. Any video or direct links to answer would definitely help.

I'm sorry but this is not something that we can help you with as we have no idea if you are authorized to view those emails and this could cause an issue for your former employer.

Actually, when given the laptop, it should have been wiped clean and Windows reinstalled. If they don't mind you having access to those emails then they are the ones who should help you do so.

I have multiple accounts in outlook 2010 and recently changed them from POP to IMAP so they synch. automatically with other devices. But I can't delete the original account (the primary account). What I would like to do is delete the original POP email primary account and its data files, designate another account as the primary and re-load the old primary as a new IMAP account with a new set of data files. Any ideas?

I've had Outlook 2010 installed for over two years on my laptop and everything has worked great.

The other day, I tried to set up a new email account and when the wizard appeared, it didn't give me the choice for MANUAL setup. I then realized that the window for the wizard was not showing all the words... the sentences ran past the viewing window and outside where I could not see, which is where the manual set up button was "below". There are no scroll bars or a way to adjust the wizard and I even tried playing with my display settings which did not work either.

I did find a work around that got my email set up but I couldn't go into advanced settings to adjust ports because of the same issue. I've looked everywhere for a fix and haven't been able to find anything... please help!

Is there any possibility to get a working access to the account of MS Office Outlook 2010 if you lost the user password? There is a password of the administrator but if change this password, there is a dumping of the password in outlook. Windows Server 2008 OS.

I tried both the auto process and manual from various site searches I did, followed the instructions, but it didn't work. I know this is user error but I don't know what else to do. I have deleted and recreated the *.ost file several times and it still asks for the password several times and then comes up with the following message. "Cannot expand the folder. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file C:\Users\Ed\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\sundancer245_hotmail1.ost is not an Outlook data file (.ost)." I have no problem accessing this account in FireFox and none of my other Hotmail and Outlook accounts are causing this problem in Outlook 2010. I am running Windows 10 on this computer and on my Wife's Tablet and I can access the Problematic Hotmail account from the Tablet and also from my new Lumia 950XL windows Phone 10. Good Day

I have 2 accounts in my Outlook - A primary work email address and a second one - The supportdesk email of the company I work for(exchange account). Now I set up sound alerts and a desktop notifications for all mails but it does not work for the second account - When a new message comes in in inbox, I do not get any alerts.

I did some research and apparently Outlook only supports alerts/notifications for the primary account. I tried making the supportdesk the default./primary account but I still do not get alerts for it.

How can I get alerts for the 2nd exchange account(shared mail account)?

Is there a way I can set up this 2nd exchange account(supportdesk) in live mail online?

Outlook 2010 is crashing frequently when I send emails. I have tried so many things to repair it but with no success. If I reinstalled Outlook 2010 would I lose all my settings in it? (e.g. Contacts groups, addresses, folders, etc.?. I have even considered upgrading to Outlook 2013 but see that many users have the same problems as I am having using it!

Answer:Outlook 2010 crashes when sending mail

If you can get into Outlook, use the facility under the drop down menu. Otherwise, look for a file called *.pst (so it could be outlook.pst or douglas.pst something similar) and save this elsewhere (ideally not your HDD).
When you attempt to uninstall Office, you will be given the option to do a repair, and this might solve your problem. I always recommend a reboot after completing the repair before trying to load the program - may not be essential but good practice.
