Bitlocker Detect Data Drive

Question: Bitlocker Detect Data Drive

Hello, I've recently encrypted my main drive, and all is well. However, I would like to be able to encrypt one of my data drives as well and bitlocker isn't even detecting the drive's existence under "Fixed Drives"

I'm on windows 8.1 machine, the encrypted main drive is a SSD drive, and the data drive is a regular WD spinning drive SATA drive. Please help, I would like to have the WD data drive encrypted as well...

Preferred Solution: Bitlocker Detect Data Drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can you at least see the drive in your file manager? What is the format of that drive?

First off, Bitlocker has never been used on this computer. All its drives have never been encrypted. The problem is that when I open Bitlocker Drive Encryption in the Control Panel there are absolutely no drives listed at all. The area under the heading "BitLocker Drive Encryption - Hard Disk Drives" is completely blank, as is the area under "BitLocker To Go". However, Windows Explorer detects all hard and removable drives just fine.

I have tried the following:

1. chkdsk /r (no problems found)
2. sfc /scannnow (no problems found)
3. rebuilding the MBR with Comodo Cleaning Essentials (which didn't quite like the one I had) after aswMBR found no problem
4. repairing/resetting file and registry ownership and permissions to defaults using SubInACL scripts for registry and for files. (This did fix a few minor nagging problems I had, by the way)
5. a clean boot
6. anti-malware scans (including several offline rescue CD's like Kaspersky, Comodo, ESET and AVG)
7. creating a new user account with admin privileges and trying from there
8. trying to trace file and registry activity with Sysinternals Process Monitor (but I don't really understand what to look for, or what most the results in the listing mean, good or bad)
9. A repair installation/inplace upgrade after a clean boot (this was a problem)

The repair installation fails and aborts quickly with the following error message:

"Setup was unable to determine if BitLocker Drive E... Read more

Ok here is the deal. I had a new laptop that dual booted vista and linux. the vista partitioned was encrypted with bitlocker. I decide to give windows 7 a try so I repartition the drive in to one large volume, format and install windows 7. Everything worked perfectly. The problem is after about a week I realize there was some important files on the vista partition before I wiped everything out. I have found several data recovery programs the can recover files after a format, however they only show files that where on the linux partition. My guess is that the bitlocker encryption is preventing these tools from finding any of the vista files.

So the question is, Does anyone know of a application or company that can recover files from a bitlocker'ed drive after it has been formatted.

I am trying to enable bitlocker on our laptops which have a C partition (OS) and a D partition (Data)
I have downloaded EnableBitLocker.vbs and managed to enable the system drive encryption using
enablebitlocker.vbs /on:tpm /l:c:\windows\temp\bitlocker.log

The Data partition (D:) does not encrypt using this however. I cannot see a way to specify the drive using this script.
Can anyone advise how I can do this?

Answer:Enable Bitlocker via script on Data drive

I couldn't figure this one out so ended up configuring the laptops only to have a C drive.....not ideal!

I need advices about how can I solve my issue:

I have an external drive. I started the encryption drive with bitlocker, during encryption process,
the drive has been disconnected so I wasn?t able to continue the encryption process.

Now, the drive is partially encrypted. When I want to access the drive, I got the error message
?Encryption Failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion?.

I would like a procedure to recover the remaining data: encrypted and non encrypted

I used M3 Bitlocker Recovery but the tool freezes, I am currently trying TestDisk 7.0. Analysis
is in progress.

You'll find attached screenshots and detailed description of the situation.

I have the passwords & recovery keys

I just started using BitLocker on a Windows7 Computer and am confused about one specific aspect of recovering data drives. I have read through the tutorials on here but I can't seem to find anywhere that explicitly states if this is possible or not.

From this link: Regain access to a computer locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption

I see the statement that "To unlock the drive and regain access to your files, you will need the BitLocker recovery password. If you also encrypted data drives, you will need to have access to the drive that Windows is installed on as well."

My question is if my OS drive dies, will the data drives be recoverable with the password and/or recovery key?

I am not currently in such a situation but I would like to prepare for all possibilities. Since a TPM is needed to store the encryption keys on for the OS drive (I just ordered one but have not encrypted my OS drive yet), are the encryption keys for the data drives are stored on the OS drive itself and this is the issue?

Most of the things I find on Google when trying to search about this issue discuss recovering a data drive that is failing, not a data drive that is in good health but does not have access to the system drive. Can anyone say definitively if this is possible, or do I need to be prepared to lose all data on data drives if my system drive crashes?

Answer:BitLocker Encrypted Data Drive Recovery Question

Based upon what I have read, your data drives will be UNRECOVERABLE if your OS drive dies. I would consider setting up a RAID 5 array for your OS drive for redundancy, this way if one drive dies, all you have to do is replace it and the missing data pieces will be recreated.

Hello Dears. I had encrypted my drive by Bitlocker in windows 7.
few days after my friend did quick format in my encrypted drive.
my 300 gb of data lost. and nothing saved
i remember unlock password.
how can i recover my data ??? i need my data
i tried drive recovering tools (advanced EFS data recovery, easeus . . ,) . but . . . it's encrypted and formatted drive.
can i undo quick format and decrypt ???
sorry my english is not good.
someone help me please.

Answer:Can i recover lost data from encrypted drive by Bitlocker

BitLocker is not the cause of failed to recover files. Format a drive will clear all data saved on the hard disk. Thus recovery formatted data will be a hard disk based technology but not related to operation system. There is no build-in data recovery feature in Windows operations. So we will needto use third party recovery tool or contact third party data recovery company for current issue.

As recovery missing data service will be expensive, we can also check emails and contact friends to see if that can help get a part of files back especially for photos, documents etc.

Hello all,
I happen to have reinstalled by mistake a new Windows7 OS on a drive (I had two drives one with an OS and another with a bitlocker drive used for back up, both drives were IDE drives and the bitlocker was under slave mode if that can be of any help... ) that hosted VERY important data and was encrypted by Bitlocker. What can I please do to recover this formerly encrypted data? The drive is now recognized as an active healthy partition with an associated drive letter (different from the original one)
I don't have the bitlocker key.

If you need any hardware info please let me know.
Help me please!

Hi All,
I'm hoping that some of the gurus in this area can help me to resolve why my transfer rate to my external hard drive is so slow (ranges from 200 kbps to 15 kbps), but is almost always in the 15-20 kbps range vs. an advertised/expected transfer rate of

5 Gbps.  That's < 1% of expected transfer rate.  Any thoughts on possible root causes that I should investigate?

I have an HP Probook 430 G1 laptop with a Samsung SSD 850 PRO 256 GB SCSI internal hard drive and 4 GB RAM running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. I also have a Western Digital My Passport Ultra 1 TB external hard driveBoth the internal drive and the external drive are bitlocker encryptedI've connected the drives via USB 3.0 ports + cable. I've also connected the drives via USB 2.0 port on laptop and USB 3.0 cable.I've checked the My Passport for errors and found none.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

Hi! I am using Bart PE to recover data from my laptop's hard drive, which has stopped booting up and instead comes up with a blue error message stating that there is an 'unmountable boot volume'. Therefore, using the 'get data back for NTFS' plugin, I have managed to see and get to the stage where I can copy the files to somewhere else to recover them. However, the laptop/software just will not detect my external hard drive, a 320GB USB Toshiba!

Has anyone please got any suggestions as to what I can do to 'see' the hard drive and transfer the data to it? Or how I can get the files off another way? I really need the recent data on it, and my last back-up was two months ago mad!

After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

Answer:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?
Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.
I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

I have created a bootable USB using Macrium Reflect 7.1 (Free version) with the options checked for bitlocker encrypted drives to automatically unlock. My pc has the following drives:
1 M.2 drive (OS) (encrypted)
2 1TB HDD's in RAID1 (encrypted)
1 750GB HDD (not encrypted)
1 external HDD (encrypted)

In the PE environment only my OS drive is visible. I cant even see the unencrypted 750GB HDD for some reason. If I run a command prompt and "manage-BDE" it shows only my OS drive, and some drive "E" which is apparently encrypted but does not have a listed size.

I normally store my system backup images on some of these drives which are inaccessible. Why are they not visible in the PE environment?

I encrypted a volume using bitlocker on windows 7 ultimate.. My cousin was installing windows 8.1 on my laptop but she may have formatted and recreated the partitions during the setup and now I have lost my encrypted volume and its data contents.. Is there
any way I can get my encrypted volume back or its data cuz they were too important to lose.. I tried using a recovery software but it didn't recover the encrypted volume contents..

Will reinstalling windows 7 show my encrypted volume/data or is there any way I can get back my bitlocker enabled partition or its encrypted data contents?

Actually i saved data in partition, then after added bitlocker security.
I have password and key also.
Then I unlocked it for sometime, Due to my friend mistake, he deleted entire data from drive (which was enabled for bitlock). Data was huge so it just deleted without going to recyclebin.
So now i can recover data with DATA RECOVERY TOOL from partition.
But Its encrypted. bcuz in that drive data was encrypted.
So when i try to access its marked as not read (encrypted).
I think there is no way to put same data back in bitlock cover and unlock it or other solution.
If you have some suggestions, Please suggest.
I will be very thankfull to you.

I've setup Bitlocker for work laptops, but our concern there was the laptop getting lost or stolen. If the data was extracted from a Bitlocker encrypted PC via remote access methods such as malware or the "Microsoft" phone call, are they obtaining the encrypted data or the decrypted data? I would think it would be decrypted, unless windows is decrypting the data realtime.

Answer:Does Bitlocker Protect Data Exfiltration?

Here is MS' story on BitLocker, but I don't see anything about whether others can see the information

I am guessing, but I suspect that certain types of malware could read anything that has been decrypted and that finds its way into RAM or the caches. As for MS, I suppose they can grab and see anything they want to any time, encryted or otherwise. I mean for the love of pete it's right there in their EULA...

MS supplies cops with DIY forensics tool

COFEE, (Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor)

Microsoft has reportedly developed a USB key that allows investigators to extract forensic data from PCs.
COFEE (Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor) comes in a USB key form factor, and was distributed to a small number of law-enforcement agencies last June, the Seattle Times reports. The device includes 150 tools that allow investigators to extract internet history files, for example, or "decrypt passwords".

Rather than pointing to the existence of a backdoor the decrypting password feature appears to relate to password auditing tools. COFEE also allows investigators to upload data for analysis.
The device is used by more than 2,000 officers in at least 15 countries, including Germany and the US. Microsoft supplies the technology to law enforcement agencies without charge. The tool reportedly allows investigators to scan for evidence on site without necessarily having to cart PCs back to a lab.
Computer forensics is a painstaking process carefully designed to make sure data on a suspect computer isn't changed - simply plugging a device into a computer to extract data seems like a quick and dirty fix. The admissibility of such data in court in debatable even before we get into considering the possibility that the USB key might harbour malware.

With a laptop W10 + TPM enabled with hard drive partitioned with C: = system; d: = users; e: = media; f: = the rest - all partitions BitLocker encrypted, all working beautifully well, I have an odd behaviour: after each W10 full startup, the partition e: needs to be opened by input of password asked. It works normally for all other partitions.

This is after migrating from W7 to W10 without clean install.
In W7, all was working well also but without the oddity.

I don't remember activating something special for e: different from other partitions.

Is there a parameter buried somewhere that regulates this behaviour? Or is the simple way out to decrypt then encrypt again?
Not a burning issue of course.

I currently have Win 7 Beta as my main OS with a non-system partition encrypted with Bit-locker(without TPM). I downloaded a copy of Win 7 RC, but will the new OS recognize the bit-locker encrypted partitions? Do I need to decrypt this drive, re-install the OS and then encrypt this non-system partition again? (I don't have my boot partition encrypted)

Or will Win 7 RC natively recognize the bit-locker partition and I just have to provide the user key to mount the drive?

Answer:Migrating Win7Beta bitlocker encrypted data to Win 7 RC

Hello Icered, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would recommend to decrypt the drive first, install the new OS, then use bit-locker to encrypt it afterwards.

Hope this helps,

I am working on a Windows 7 deployment project. We are encrypting laptops with Bit Locker. Can users restore their data from their home drives on the network if Bit Locker hasn't finished yet? I was told they can't. In other words, they can save to the hard drive while encrypting is in progress but can not restore data from their network home drive while encryption is in progress. Is this true? Thanks.

Answer:Question about Windows 7 BitLocker & Data restoration

I guess I'm not understanding the question. What does accessing data from home computers have to do with using BitLocker on the systems you're running? Technically, data isn't restored from BitLocker. Do you mean Recover data from an Encrypted volume?Perhaps you can clarify your question a bit.message edited by Jennifer SUMN

how can I recover data from a damaged disk (not physically) of an external encrypted Bitlocer.
Description of the situation:

After connecting the drive - I can decipher it by typing the password - but when you try to open the contents of the report the message "format disk"
- the disk probably has some volume damaged - it has been disconnected from the computer (without being turned off)
What I have done so far:

Using the "Lazesoft" program - I managed to copy (of course after entering the password
on the damaged disk)
the content to another external disk (full - looking after size) but -
this data is encrypted (mainly ending with .ER)
I am asking for a hint:

whether the data that is on the new disk can somehow read (on this disk I can try) [or/and]how to create a damaged disk image to try on another disk [or/and]how to repair a damaged disk (as a last resort) - I am afraid of total data loss [or/and]what other program to use to copy data from a damaged disk
but decrypted
Thank you in advance for your help

I was unable to find answers to my dilemma so I am hoping someone here can help me out. If this question was already posted, please kindly direct me to the post for a solution.

Recently my computer encounter a virus and I decided to shut down the computer. When it booted back up, some disk scan tool was ran and it found a bunch of "Data errors" with the hard drive that was CRITICAL.

This somehow cause Windows Explorer to unable to detect any folders/files within any of my partitions.

So I used my Repair CD to install a previous Windows Image backup. When Windows 7 rebooted the hard drive critical errors were gone. However Windows Explorer is still UNABLE to detect any folders/files.

Attached is a screenshot of my Disk Management. As you can see, Disk Management is able to see all the partitions and the percentage of free space in each partition. However when I go into Windows Explorer, it keep saying "This folder is empty" regardless of which partition I click on. I am perplex.

Anyone has an idea as to what went wrong? Can someone please help me detect all my folders/files again.

Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Windows Explorer DOES NOT detect any data in any partitions.

Here is an update to my situation.

I went into "Organize > Folder and search options > view tab" and check "Show hidden files, folders and drive", I was able to see all the folders and files within each of the partition.

Step 2: After encypted OS drive again, the D data drive can be automatically unlocked by reset the password.

Hi, I probably have to explain past chain of events which might explain the cause/problem.

Prior to this, the 2TB internal SATA HDD was used for data storage via external USB toaster and it can be used for my windows XP pc and windows 7 notebook as external storage.

I hooked it into my pc via the SATA connectors (not usb toaster anymore) and also added another new 3TB HDD to the SATA connectors and booting pc via another USB drive with windows 7 installation. I wanted to install windows 7 to the new 3TB HDD but had issues because of the GPT area and my pc had old BIOS.

I did many things and googled many things but the following may be the only possible cause to my problem:
Shift and F10
type " diskpart.exe " hit return
then convert the disk to GPT with formatted partition as follows
type " list disk " hit return
type " Select disk 0" hit return ( this will select the 3tb hdd)
type " clean " hit return
type " convert GPT " hit return
type " create partition primary size=102400 " hit return
type " select partition 1 " hit return
type " format " hit return

Not sure the above was the reason, but above was meant to select the new 3tB HDD, it could have affected the connected 2TB HDD too.

I gave up trying to install windows 7 to the new 3TB HDD, disconnected it. Then I tried to install windows 7 to the 2TB HDD and this was when I noticed it could not be detected fo... Read more

Answer:Internal SATA WD 2tB on USB toaster with lots of data, cant detect

Hi there,
I would be glad to try and help, but could you clarify what is your primary goal at the moment? Do you need to recover the data that was on the 2TB HDD or do you want to install Windows on it?
If your motherboard doesn't have UEFI you cannot use your 3TB drive as a boot one.
If you don't need the data that was on the 2TB HDD you can just run the Write Zeros with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics ( if it's a WD drive if not it's better to download the manufacturer's diagnostics utility). This will completely erase everything that was on the HDD and you should be able to initialize it as MBR and install the Windows on it. However this is only applicable in case you don't need the data back.

Hope that helps.

Hello peeps...

I have a system drive on a workstation which is 1) removable, 2) contains 2 partitions - one for the sytem & data files, one reserved by the os.

I would like to use this drive and it's file data in an external drive case (SATA) connected to my notebook.

Is this possible? Will the notebook handle the external drive properly?

Answer:Using system drive data as a data drive on seperate machine

It shouldn't be a problem, the notebook should see the drive as secondary. Can't hurt to create a System Resore or image the system first, though:

i got nothing to hide, but i like making life difficult for info i encrypted my system drive with truecrypt, then i encrypted it with Bitlocker. Two very different and very long passwords for each (bitlocker needs my USB encryption key inserted) , plus the login password....

too much?

Answer:Truecrypt PLUS Bitlocker for sys drive?

My personal opinion: Yes, it is overkill.

If you want to encrypt your data use only one of them.
There is noway that normal thieve can break any of these encryption methods you mentioned.

In reality best method is not having your sensitive data on your computes at all. This way you can be sure that other people cant get hold of your informations through your computers.

And a thing about BitLocker with USB key.
I once thought about it and just like you planned to implement it.

But then I asked myself couple of questions.
Do I really want to put my USB every time I turn on my laptop?
Do I really need that kind of sensitivity?
So far answer was no.

I am really planing on encrypting my data in near future, but not now.

And if you still implement USB protection.
Make sure you have restore key(code) somewhere safe, incase something bad happens to your USB.
So, just have an insurance, and don`t lose all your data by just as silly mistake.

The data is extremely important, so I dont want to resolve in formatting the drive. Is there a way, I could fix my drive.

If you you were decrypting the drive and it failed...then no the data is lost. You might try and use those recovery tools to try and rescues it. However, encryption is not a play thing to be abused. When things go wrong, they go wrong.

Can anyone suggest as to why the USB key was not taken into consideration?

Answer:BitLocker Drive Encryption

Windows Vista didn't provided any means by which a user working on Windows XP could access a shared folder of an BitLocker encrypted drive. But, this feature was provided in Win 7 in the form of BitLocker To Go feature.

So, my question is, isn't it hampers the main motive that was behind BitLocker Drive Encryption feature?

repair-bde E: Z: -rp -> with the password from key file
repair-bde C: Z: -rk Z:keyfile.bek

and the -force option
all options have failed - i have scoured the net and im exausted from searching.... I do not want to download any 3rd party programs as i shouldnt have to.

My wife want her laptop locked down with bitlocker and a usb flash stick(laptop does not support TPM) Never used bitlocker before and i don't want to brick the system and have to reinstall.

She has one physical drive split into 2 partitions, my question is can i bitlock both drives and use the same(one) flash drive as the keyholder to unlock the windows drive as well as the second partition(she does not want to have to input a password{lazy}?

Have looked but can't seem to find the answer, I know i can store the recovery key on the same stick, but since i dont know how the actual unlock key is written to the usb stick I don't want to encrypt the win drive with a key and then have that overwritten with the key for the second partition.

Answer:Bitlocker with a usb flash drive??

Hello Ba5ik,

Yes, you can save both recovery keys onto the same USB flash drive without any issue. Just keep a backup of both of them in separate folders on the USB flash drive as well to be safe.

For Windows 7 partition:
BitLocker Drive Encryption - Windows 7 Drive - Turn On or Off with no TPM

For other nonsystem partition:
BitLocker Drive Encryption - Internal Data Hard Drives - Turn On or Off

Hope this helps,

I have 1 partition encrypted drive from windows 7 ultimate, now if i want to change to home premium which do not have bitlocker feature, will i still be able to access the bitlocker encrypted drive?

Answer:bitlocker encrypted drive

My initial answer is no.. Because Bitlocker is not a part of the lower end flavors of 7 and must be poresent. You should decrypt the data first before downgrading the OS

However, with that said,,, there is the policy you can set within Group Policy for USB flash drives to "Allow Access To Bitlocker-Protected Removable Data Drives From Earlier Versions Of Windows" that can assure that you have access to the USB Flash Drive on other operating systems and computers.

I do not know if this will work on External USB HDD's. I have not played around with bitlocker a whole lot,, need to set some time aside for testing it out.

The Group Policy for this is as follows

In the start search type Group an then click on Edit Group Policy

Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Bitlocker Drive Encryption / Removable Data Drives

This policy also shows under Fixed Data Drives. But only mentions FAT file system, if you formatted it as NTFS, I am not sure it will work.

and there you will find the policy.

This policy settings configures whether or not removable data drives formated with the FAT file system can be unlocked and viewed on computer running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP with SP3, or Windows XP with SP2 operating systems.

But I doubt the data will be recoverable if you downgrade to Home Premium prior to unencrypting it.

It will not damage the HDD just make sure you save the "Key" in a save place not on the computer (A hard copy on paper and a digital copy on a thumb drive two backups of the key is best) also the Windows OS partition or HDD can not be encrypted using Bitlocker.

just wondering, when a drive has been unlocked with bitlocker, is there a way to lock it again without restarting the PC?

Answer:Lock Drive with Bitlocker?

How to re-lock a Bitlocker drive

So you've turned on Bitlocker encryption for a drive. You've unlocked it and done your work, but how do you re-lock it? Here's how to add an entry to the right-click context menu to re-lock the drive.

1. Open up Notepad and type in the following, replacing 'E:' with the drive letter of your Bitlocker drive:manage-bde -lock E: forcedismount
2. Save the file as lock.bat somewhere accessible, such as C:\Windows or C:\Program Files\

3. Open up Registry Editor. Navigate to the following Key:HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
4. Create a new key named runas with the default value set to Lock.
5. Now right-click on runas in the left window pane and create a new key called command.

6. Set the value of the Default Entry to c:\windows\lock.bat or whatever locaiton you chose at step 2.

7. Navigate back to the runas key and create a new String Value called AppliesTo. Set the value to E: or whichever drive you have encrypted.

8. Goto Windows Explorer and test your new right-click context menu entry!

Use caution when in Registry!

This feature is implemented in Vista, so I guess it will be in Windows 7 too.

I have been having some issues when trying to turn Bitlocker on in C:

I have followed the instructions as per this forum to enable a Startup key in gpedit.msc as I dont have TPM which worked.

After following the instructions, Windows Bitlocker asked me to insert a USB to save the startup key to. This appeared to save and then moved onto the next step where I took down the recovery key etc... and finally restarted to make sure my system was compatible before encryption started.

Upon restart, Windows said that it couldnt find a key on the USB drive. After further investigation I found that windows did not save the key to the USB after all even checked as a hidden file. It will save the text file (recovery key) to usb but not the bek file for the startup key.

I have tried this several times but each time it wont save although the system dosent say there has been a problem and moves on to the next stage.

The USB is a 2gb cruzer with the smart drive software removed and re-formatted to NTFS. I have also tried this on other USB drives with no luck and the USB drives work as Iam able to write other things to it?

Any help would be greatly appriciated as I have searched this forum and MS forums with no luck.

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone here have some experience in this area.
I have a Gigabyte P55A-UD4P Mb which has a TPM chip.

I installed W7 Ultimate and try to enable bitlocker. It seems to me I am always unable to lock the drive with TPM.

I have follow the standard steps, clear TPM chip in bios, then go to control panel and enable bitlocker, The process takes ownership of TPM, create and back up TPM passeword. Then generate bitlocker key and store it on USB key. FInally it pre test if the drive sill unlock before encryption starts. It is at this point after the reboot that the billocker error come up and said bitlock cannnot be enable becasue the device has change or pin not inputed.

Did I do anything worng??

Answer:Cannot lock drive with bitlocker.

I have a look at the TPM driver, it is 3.5.X and read that only 3.6 works with Win 7. Do you giys think that is the problem? Some manufacturer has bring out 3.6 for download already, will that work on my Gigabyte Mb??

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

I don't know when it started happening, but my drive stopped asking for a password and started asking for a recovery key. I lost my recovery file in a format, I only know my password. Is there any way to just enter the password, not the recovery key? I have very important files on my drive I have no access to.

Hi ,
At my company we run win7 with bitlocker on our laptops and we use ad for the recovery keys.
I can rename a machine in the domain and it will keep the recovery key with the new computer name .
The only problem is at the boot up screen where you enter your bitlocker pin it still has the old computer name for the drive label.
How can I change this?

Any help would be great

Answer:changing the drive label in bitlocker

This can be only changed, if you re-encrypt the volume.
There is no other way to update this information.Manoj Sehgal

Ok, So here's the issue, a friend of mine have a 1TB WD external drive, which got a bad sector after someone unplugged it during file transfer, issue is, my friend doesn't have the Recovery Password, or anything, only the password he uses to unlock the drive, the drive got vital information, and they must be retrieved.

Any ideas?

Answer:A drive locked by BitLocker got a bad sector!

See if he may be able to run chkdsk on the drive first to hopefully take care of the bad sector.Disk Check
Afterwards, he may be able to use an option in the tutorial below with the BitLocker password to unlock the data drive.BitLocker Drive Encryption - Unlock a Locked Data or Removable Drive
Hope this helps for now,

I have just reimaged my PC. After reimage the drive was 120GB(approx) free from 148GB HD. I turned on Bitlocker and after reboot the drive fills up until only 5.99GB free from 148GB.

I have done this twice now, but cannot understand why. I've googled "when turning on bitlocker c drive is almost full" but to no avail.

Anyone had any similar experiences, and know how to resolve? (will it automatically revert once the encrypt is complete?)

Answer:When turning on Bitlocker C drive becomes full.

Yes - bitlocker uses all but ~6GB of the drive during conversion, but it will give the space back once the drive is encrypted. This is completely normal.

I need to return a desktop computer. I just turned on bit locker and plan on also erasing the drive as well (after bitlocker is complete). It is an SSD.

Out of curiosity, once bitlocker is on, can anyone access the data if they do not know my log in information or recovery key?

Answer:Bitlocker to Secure Drive I have to return

In theory anyone sufficiently motivated could brute force crack the encryption, but it would likely take an extremely long time to the point of not being practical in the likely cost:benefit analysis. All encryption, assuming it can be decrypted, is subject to brute force cracking. There is also a well known, and intentional, back door built into Windows. It's usually not that big of a deal because it requires physical access to the computer, but it basically allows you to wipe out the password on an account in the event you forget it. I have absolutely no idea how that might interact with Bitlocker though.

I've just replaced my laptop. Both old and new had / have two fixed drives - C drive with the OS one and then a second fixed local drive (mapped as K) that I want to use for backups.

On my old laptop I had Bitlocker full drive encryption working for both, using the instructions at
How to Turn On or Off BitLocker for Fixed Data Drives in Windows 10
How to Turn On or Off Auto-unlock for BitLocker Drive in Windows 10

I've succesfully enabled full disk encryption on my new C drive (including setting PIN to unlock on boot), but when I try and turn Bitlocker on on my K drive I get this error message:
I've tried searching here and elsewhere but haven't managed to find anything that matches my issue exactly. If it helps my old laptop didn't have a TPM module, but my new one does.

Hope someone can help me, please.

Many thanks

Do you have any group policies set for BitLocker? By default they should be all "Not configured."

I have tried to unlock my usb stick and this message appears
BitLocker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion. This could be due to either all conversion logs being corrupted or the media being write-protected.
I have tried to download the Bitlocker Drive repair tool and it won't let me saying This update is not applicable to your computer.
I feel just sick that I cannot open my usb I really need some help.

I've wanted to encrypt my drive with Bitlocker for ages, yet haven't been able to get it working. I run the drive preparation program and it comes up with an error saying "The BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool could not find a target system drive. You may need to manually prepare your drive for BitLocker." I've already gone all the way through microsoft, asking for support (They didn't help me in the general enquiry section, and told me to go to tech support, which didn't have support for the product.) And also went through and found the problem, but didn't understand what to do. Can someone please help?

Into another troule.
I wanted to encrypt my Western Digital Portable 500 GB HDD so my data would be safe.
I turned on the Bitlocker for this hard disk and set the password.
After that it started Encrypting..

I knew that it will take a long time so i went to university for lecture.
When i came back the encryption dialouge was stuck at 12.4 %.
[Snap Attached]

I kept waiting for some time but it wasn't working i pulled out the cable and inserted again...

I inserted the key and it unlocked with autorun dialogue and Encrypting Dialogue. [Snap Attached]

Clicking on *Continue without Scanning* brings the my computer windows and it starts searching but doesn't open the harddisk.

All this happens everytime i plug back, i have lost access to my all data thats stored on that harddisk... In my system there iz only 80GB Sata Hard containing OS.

I have tried one thing.
chkdsk /r it worked for a while but on 4th stage it stopped.

Please Can you Guys help me ? i want it to complete the encryption or decrypt whatever it has encrypted or damaged :(

Please Help ME :'(
