What RAM should I purchase?

Question: What RAM should I purchase?

I am building a computer for my first time and after choosing a motherboard, have no idea what RAM to buy. I know that I want 8 gigs of RAM, and the motherboard has slots for 4 RAM cards, but I don't know how to figure out how many pins should be on the RAM that I buy. The motherboard that I chose is an MSI ATX DDR3 2133 Motherboard 970. I would prefer a RAM card from Corsair, but thats just personal preference, not necessity. Help anyone?

Also, in case you need more info about my motherboard, I got it at this URL:

Preferred Solution: What RAM should I purchase?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: What RAM should I purchase?

As described in the motherboard description - Memory: 4x DDR3-2133(OC)/ 1866/ 1600/ 1333/ 1066 DIMM Slots, Dual Channel, Max Capacity of 32GB.

This means your motherboard takes DDR3 memory. When an OC follows a number it means that in order for you to run 2133 memory you must overclock, I.e. add more voltage to get it to function at this speed. This is something you don't have to concern yourself with.

Before we move forward why this motherboard? Here are 2 questions that will help you in the process of building a PC:

1. What do you want your system to do?
2. What is your budget?

Question: which to purchase

I need to purchase a new FP Shooter and just can't seem to decide between "Battlefield 1942" and "VietCong". I've read all the reviews and as usual they leave me with no information.

I am concerned that both of these titles will be either too much or too buggy for my PC. Is there anyone out there with any experience with these titles?

My PC as a 32mb GeForce 2 video card. Which was more than enough for 'Unreal Tournament 2003', MOHAA, Red Faction II and "Delta Force: Black Hawk Down".

Since it is still a long time before 'Halo' or 'Half Life2' or 'Doom 3' will be released I need another FPS to tide me over until then. Are there any other FPS's out there that I am overlooking?

First post, sorry if this is in the wrong spot.

I am looking at two PCs, both with very similar specs.

However, one is from Dell with:

Pentium® D Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology (2.80GHz, 800FSB)
256MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GS

The other is from HP with:

Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor E6300 (1.86GHz)
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 7500LE, TV-Out, DVI, VGA

All other specs are very similar(1 GB RAM, 19" flat screen, apx $1200).

Which PC is better for gaming?
Which processor is better?

Answer:Need help with new PC purchase

the Core 2 Duo processor is better (Conroe core, currently the top of the line series)

The 7900GS Graphics card is better, so I would assume the Dell would be the better Gamer in the current setup.

The HP would be better if the graphics card was more comparable.

All, I have a HP Laptop which was purchased in the UK (sometime around 2008/2009) and is currently out of warranty. I wanted to check if HP (HP India or Other locations) has any offer / scheme where they buy back these old HP laptops in return for a new purchase. It would be a benefit to Customer's but also to HP who can use parts that are in good condition by their Services and Repair team. Plus it will be a green environment initiative. Thank you. Kind RegardsVenkat

Hi, That is a very good suggestion but all you can do for that machine now is to donate it for a charity or school. Regards.

I am going to get a CD re-writer for back-ups. My computer place stocks Liteon 40x12x48 with Nero Software.

Have never used a burner before and was wondering if this is an OK brand. I looked it up on the Internet and it seems quite popular. I only want it for basic stuff. I don't really want to go elsewhere as this place has looked after the computer very well since I got it.

Just thought I would check out the views of this forum.

Answer:Purchase of CD-R/RW

The Lite-On is an excellent burner for the money. Lite-On has been good about their firmware updates. The 40X burner you mentioned was released without Mt Rainier support and with P-CAV recording mode. They added both Mt Rainier and true CAV recording through firmware. You don’t have to know what all that means. Just go to their site and get their latest firmware and you will have the fastest 40x burner on the market.

Ok so I am in need of some new RAM, currently I have 2x2GB of DDR2 800MHz Corsair Gaming Memory totaling 4GB, but one of the RAM sticks is bad and doesn't work. And I don't want to spend $95 on a 2GB RAM stick. So I have $90 left that I had gotten on my birthday, and was wondering what is the best, highest amount of DDR2 RAM I could buy. I want a lot of DDR2 RAM, but not only do I want a lot but I want it to be good quality RAM that will last a long time, and has a fast speed like 800MHz or higher for $90 or less.

Answer:New RAM Purchase Help

Dont really have an answer to your question, but have some advice. If you are not going to replace all the ram at once, be careful with the purchase. Make sure that all the sticks are identical, especially the frequency. Many, who replace, ram, buy all that will be used at the same time.

BTW a belated happy birthday.

I am considering buying/installing an SSD, probably 240gb. I currently have a very well functioning machine with a 1tb HD and all my OS and software is installed on that HD. I am using Windows 7, with all the latest updates installed. I have never used an SSD or installed one so I have some questions:
1. Is 240gb enough or would 128gb be sufficient? I believe I only want Windows 7 (likely upgrade to Windows 8 when released) on the SSD and leave my current HD alone with all my software as it is currently installed.
2. What/where can I find a step by step for installing the SSD and directing the OS to read everything else from the current HD.
3. I usually use the Hibernate feature and only completely power down every few days. Would that still be acceptable?
4. I assume I would have to purchase a new copy of the OS therefore I may wait until Windows 8 is released before making the change.

Answer:Considering an SSD purchase

I'm looking to get a new PSU for one of my PC's and looking for recommendations or general advice on which one to get. I'm not looking to spend too much (in all honesty I'd prefer not to go over the £50 mark but 60 is the absolute maximum even if it is clear that more expensive PSU's are better value).
I actually have two PC's which are both in need of new PSU's. One is better than the other so ideally I'd rather get one for that.
PC One:
AM3+ Ultra Durable (on the motherboard)
Sapphire HD 7770 GHZ Edition Graphics Card
6 or 8 GB of ram
Not too sure on the other specs or anything of it as the PSU in it is blown and not sure how to find out details.
PC Two (lesser one):
Intel Celeron CPU - E3400 @ 2.60GHZ
Nvidia GeForce 8400GS Graphics Card
In general I'm not looking to do too much gaming on either of the PC's. The only game I tend to play is World Of Warcraft. outside of that I don't tend to game much on the PC, certainly not high end gaming anyway. I'm looking to be able to run Warcraft without issues as well as stuff such as Photoshop and general other PC stuff.
Any help or advice on possible PSU's to get would be a great help. More watts the better?

1. Physical Dimensions
Besides the specs and form factors, the physical dimensions are also important factors in selecting a compatible power supply. Here is an outline of the physical dimensions of most standard power supplies:
ATX: 6x3.5x5.5", HxWxD. Most common. Uses 4 mounting screws.
Mini-ATX: 5x3.5x5", HxWxD. Rare size. Uses 4 mounting screws. Can be used in a regular ATX case, but often not the other way around.
MicroATX: 5x3x4", HxWxD. Use 3 mounting screws. Not interchangeable with ATX or miniATX.
Flex ATX: Even smaller than Micro ATX. Various sizes according to case specs; often not interchangeable.
Use the data above to determine if a particular power supply would fit your case.
The quality of a power supply can be estimated by its weight. Answer:Purchase Help!!

- Also, does the LG DVD RW works on CDR as well? And should I buy another CD or DVD ROM Drive?
Personally I like to have a different dvd-rom drive on a dif ide cable so they arent on the same cable, easier to install more stuff at the time or rip 2 disks, etc. The DVD-RW will burn CDR.

- I have no idea about the speaker, is the original one a good one? Or should I purchase something more expensive?
Speakers are fine for computer use. Are you going to do a lot of sound editing or an audiophile buff? If so, then you may want to look at something different.

- Which CPU should I go for?
I like the 3.0e, Prescott core does run hot but performs better. I dont think you will be disappointed with any of them though.

The XT is going to have more speed. If its that big of a deal, go for the 9800 PRO and OC to a 9800 XT

Good luck

I got roughly $1,700 in scholarship money to spend on a laptop. I got on the net and was overwhelmed (i'm a total n00b) at all the things out there. Should i go for Intel or AMD? Any specific ones? Also, i'd like to do some gaming on it, so should i go with something that has ATi or nVIDIA? Blah, i'm totally lost. Any suggestions are welcomed!

Answer:Need help on a purchase!

Well laptops generally aren't made for gaming and finding a good 'gaming' laptop would probably be somewhat difficult and expensive. AMD's are generalized as being better for gaming and Intel for apps mainly because of Intels bigger fatter pipelines, whereas AMD has smaller ones that can do more instructions per clock cycle than Intel...this is why you can see a 2.2GHz amd chip beat out a 3GHz Intel depending on the chips.

When it comes to ATI or Nvidia, well you'll get all sorts of answers on that and really it comes to personal preferences. It seems in my experience with a few different cards and reading posts on these forums that ATI always have driver difficulties, and generally I see more ATI based problems on this board...but then again that's just my Opinion. Like I said finding a laptop with a good onboard card would be hard, because laptops get really hot so they can only be 'so powerful' ya know? I don't know any particular laptops however, so just wait and see if someone indeed has some good suggestions.

Question: bad purchase?

i bought a new psu today....some no name 450 watt for 59.99 (was 69.99 but the guy messed up when he told me the 59.99, but gave it to me anyway for the better price)

i was mainly concerned with the 12v old 350 watt ran at 11.49 to 11.51 without overclocking.

i'm overclocking right now (225) and sandra's readin' 11.61 on the 12v with the new 450 reads 11.71 to 11.78v without.

i could of had got a psu for gaming (i forget the name, it's known though) for 120 plus tax.....but i cheaped out cause i'm a college student with limited money.

canadian prices by the way.

edit: and i'm not all that concerted with overclocking. i'm happy with the 2800+ @ 1.8ghz, but just like to overclock once and a while.

Answer:bad purchase?

Well, as the saying goes, ya get what ya pay for

4W4K3 also bought a $50 PSU that was supposed to have like 35a on the +12v rail and his was dropping down to 11.5 or so too, so it seems that any PSU that's under like $80 or so and claims to have good +12v rails really won't be able to deliver.

My thermaltake 560w cost $100 at the time, has 22a on the +12v rail and the lowest it ever goes is 11.9 and that's when I had tons of fans and everything attached to it.

So considering thats the power house of your system in my experience, especially with OC'ing it's best to invest a little more

Question: New PC purchase

I hope I'm in the right forum?
I 'm going to buy a new computer, $400 is my limit. "Tigerdirect" has several that looks like they would fit my needs.
Systemax Ascent KMA3500 ($399 + &19.95 shipping)
ADM Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.30GHz
160GB SATA 7200 HD
Memory DDR2 2GB
GeForce 6100 GPU
350 Watt Power Supply
Operating System: "Windows Vista Business"
Startup OS: "Windows XP Pro"
I'm leaning toward this one because most of my software is old and may not play on Vista, and I like XP it has done me no wrong. Besides I'm 84 years old and I don't want to learn any new systems.
WS Office97, Lotus 123, and others. I am not in position to replace my software with the latest editions.

The other is:

250GB SATA 7200 HD
Memory DDR2 3GB
GeForce 6150SE

The Vista is a drawback, but this looks like a great buy.

Any suggestions , comments or pertinent information on these two machines , or others in my price range?.

Where is your favorite place to buy pc hardware online? Here are the 3 places I've purchased from and the advantages or disadvantages in them.

Newegg - Their prices seem to be very good, their site is set up well, but out of the 3 places I've bought they have the slowest shipping.

Tigerdirect - They seem to have the best prices that I've found but there is a catch. Almost everything they sell has a rebate on it. So far out of two items I purchased, I've never received any rebate checks. Shipping is very quick.

Zipzoomfly - Out of the other places I believe their site is setup the best. Shipping is ok and prices are ok. It seems their selection is not as good as either of the two above.

Where do you shop online for hardware (I'm always looking for better deals)?

Answer:Where do you purchase?

Usually I shop at newegg and their shipping is usually a day ahead of schedule. If you want really cheap prices check out but be careful because its more of a database that links you to multiple sellers so some of them can be bad. Check ratings on the stores before you buy from them if you dont already know of them and their reputation.

...a hardware firewall for an office network. We have about 15 computers connected through a DSL modem plugged into a switch. I was wondering what exactly "unlimited nodes" stands for on firewalls such as our old sonic wall? Will this firewall protect the amount of computers we have?

Answer:Looking to purchase...

"Unlimited nodes" means exactly that - the firewall will work with any number of hosts behind it. This is opposed to products that will work with only X amount of computers at a time.

As for which device to get.. This depends on what you want that firewall to do and how much traffic it should handle.

I really doubt that you would have functional internet with lots of computers plugged into a DSL modem. Are you sure that this "DSL modem" thing does not already include a router and therefore also a firewall?

Hello all, i'm planning on purchasing a new computer for christmas from an online store that i feel is fairly reputable. i'm just not sure what type of processor to shoot for though. i currently have a 1.3 ghz Intel Celeron from gateway that i bought off my sister not too long ago. This system is fairly outdated that i know, and i am wondering if I should go with a quad or dual core intel that is 1.8ghz or am i better off with an intel celeron D 3.6ghz. from what i am hearing the dual core is (2) 1.8 ghz cores, so in essence a 2.6 ghz right? on one hand i think that the 3.6ghz would be pretty damn fast, and yet i read articles that would lead me to believe the 1.8 ghz dual core would be faster. i plan on using my computer for normal internet browsing as well as some gaming. i play some mmorpg's like guild wars and plan on getting into playing some half life and gears of war. which of these two processors would be best for a gaming system. These are the two that i am looking at here.

Intel Core 2 Duo 800 / 1066Mhz FSB
Intel Celeron D365 3.6ghz Lga775 533fsb

which is the best for gaming?

Answer:New Purchase, what to buy

two cores does NOT. i repeat. NOT mean twice the power. it simply splits the load between two processors. it makes it a hell of a lot faster even at a slower gigahertz speed.

i just want to clear that up so there are no misconceptions there. that's a key thing.

if you want game and play something like the half life series or gears of war, you're going to want a fairly hefty processor. not to mention a good graphics card.

the processors you'll want to look at are the Intel E6750 Core 2 duo, and hte Intel Q6600 quad core. you can even look up some benchmarks to show you how they perform as compared to other chips here:

for the rest of the system, make sure you have a quality power supply, at least 2 gigs of RAM from a good manufacturer, and a graphics chip that was very recently introduced.

in terms of power supplies, i suggest the Antec Earthwatts 500watt, the Antec NeoHE 500watt, or an Enermax Liberty power supply. those are very powerful for the price, and are certified to give at least 80% efficiency if not better. so you'll get vast amounts of power, and you'll save on your electricity bill.

for the RAM, get some from Crucial, Mushkin, Corsair, G. Skill, or OCZ technologies. those are the top brands in the business. or at least make sure it comes with it. and get at least 2 gigs worth.

for the graphics chip, i recommend at least an 8800gt or better for gaming. or if you're into ATI, go with th... Read more

Answer:Help with new RAM purchase

The only specs for RAM that you want to be careful to match are:
Although I must mention that you should not expect to see a real world noticeable increase in performance by jumping up from 1333 to 1600 (or even 1866). Running faster RAM can be important in overclocking in order to get a stable overclock.
Alternately, you could play with overclocking your current RAM to 1600 and save the money. Some 1333 sticks (but not all) can handle it.

Hi,I'm considering the purchase of a T61p. My two previous laptops were a T30 and a 600x and both have served me extremely well. The model I'm interested in is the is one with the 14" standard aspect screen (SXGA+). I've looked around but I haven't been able to confirm that the T61p is the same chassis as the T60 with the 4:3 screen. I just want to make sure that if I buy the T61 I won't end up with the wide screen chassis and a really wide bezel. I understand that the screen is off-center now, which doesn't bother me, and they have added a Windows key, but are there any other major differences I should know about? If anyone has pictures of the 14" standard aspect T61p or can provide any other information, especially your personal experiences and opinions on the build quality and the quality of the keyboard (if you have used any of the older models), it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance,Matt

i can not guarantee it but i highly doubt you will get a wide screen base and a large black area on each side of a T61 with 1050x1400 display resolution..

Ok so I am looking to purchasing my first NAS and I am having trouble trying to understand what I should purchase based on my needs. Here is what I am looking for:

-HDD indicator for each drive
-Gigabit Ethernet
-Hot swappable
-Compatible with OS X and linux
-Capable of showing up as a Network drive for everyone to access

Most that I have researched involve a web interface to set up and can only be access through there such as QNAP. Any chance that there are any that don't involve the web to constantly access? I plan to have like 8TB in the nas.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:NAS purchase need help

I think they pretty much all use a browser to access settings, but its jut by local I.P. address, nothing Internet involved unless you're coming at it from the WAN side, then you need a NAS with web-access.

NAS drives are usually tucked out of the way and rarely looked at, better for the NAS to email you periodically about it condition. Gigabit is important but so is the underlying power of the NAS itself. Cheap NAS drives with gigabit ethernet can still be slow--usually the more expensive they are, the faster and even more robust ones have a second gigabit port as a failsafe.

Don't know about hot swappable. Mine are in RAID 1 and they'lll email me if there's a problem (hopefully).
Compatibility, some would have thier own format like RiserFS, and I think all mine are now just good old NTFS so there is no need for translation at all with Windows so I'm not sure about standardization when it comes to sharing with those three main OS flavors.
All NAS drives show up on a network once properly configured, with their own I.P. address and name...that's the N in NAS.

the new amd anthlong 64 2x dual core 3, 6000
a new computer case with built in watercooling -(was suppose to get the other day but had none in stock)

now i think the case wud b the best as i cud overclock my 7600 and my cpu more as they wudnt overheat and i wudnt have to sell my old case like i wud wif my cpu and gpus... (i wud lose a lot of mony tryin to sell them)

Answer:what to purchase...

Get the 8800GTS 320mb (I think this was what you're referring to).

This would give you the highest performance boost IMO. Twin 7600GT just wouldn't compete, unless you overclock using LN2, and even that, its debatable.

Answer:Is T61p 14" still available for purchase?

No it is not. I am disappointed that the T61p is no longer available for purchase. I saw the great deals last night they were having and was waiting to purchase when I got to the office this morning. Unfortunately, when I went to reconfigure my T61p, the option to select the T61p was gone. I called the sales representatives to see if I can still purchase via the phone and they informed me that they had pulled the T61p off the site/shelves. It will be replaced by the W500 series. I had finally reduced my laptop choices to the T61p and when I got ready to purchase, they pull the rug beneath me.

Hey guys. This is my first post, and I need help!

I just purchased an old IBM laptop from eBay. It is a 600E Pentium 2 with 366Mhz and 64MB of RAM. A 4.3 GBHDD and CDROM. This is my question to those familiar with the unit.

1. The seller says the battery isn't any good and doesn't take charge. Are these fairly readily available, and are they difficult to install?

2. Can I beef it up by putting in a 256MB stick of RAM? And if so, how hard is this to do?

3. Could I also put a CD-RW drive in, to replace the current standard CD ROM?

4. Is there anyway to beef up the Mhz? And what does this inhibit the computer from doing, if it is a low count?

5. Can I beef up the HDD?

6. When they refer to PCMCIA does these mean Ethernet? Can I use my Ethernet connection for my Broadband on this computer?

7. Am I able to load Windows XP Pro on this unit?

Answers would be appreciated...

Thanks guys!

Answer:Help! With Laptop Purchase

1. You should be able to find one, but it might not be too cheap.

2. I know that new laptops take SODIMMS for memory. I'm not sure if yours will. It shouldnt be too bad to replace it.

3. I think this would be pretty difficult

4. Dont bother. Increasing clock speeds will produce more heat, which is something to worry about on laptops.

5. You should be able to swap the HD without much problems. Just make sure to get the correct form factor.

6. PCMCIA slots is what you plug PCMCIA cards into. PC cards are expansion cards. You can get one with an ethernet port.

7. Not with 64MB RAM. Perhaps Windows 98SE or Linux.

I found a vendor with i7 desktop systems (two) each with 8 GB and with Home Premium Windows 7 64-bit and the price of each is about a hundred dollars less than the most recent time I had checked. In order to do XP emulation, though, I would prefer an i7 system (desktop) which supports that (Ultimate? or Business). Also wondering about one which includes HDTV tuner as well. I am not in a hurry.

Answer:purchase new i7 with Ultimate Win 7

If you are going to spend the money I would go for the Ultimate edition.
As for the HDTV Tuner that would be a hardware component of the machine.

Question: Ebay purchase

I bought a Windows 7 Pro 32 bit program at Ebay. I installed it and had problems with the virtual machine and downloading adobe products. Now, I realize I bought a back up copy, not for resale. What should I do? Reinstall it? Get Windows anytime upgrade and try to press for Pro ultimate. Are my problems related to this copy or could it be something else. I paid $111.00 for it saving about 75 bucks. It's not like it was bargain basement. I was told it was new, but I see it was made in Puerto Rico. Can anyone shed some light?

Answer:Ebay purchase

If you check the listing and it does not state anywhere that it is not Retail or OEM, you can open a claim with ebay and/or paypal, as you did not receive the product you paid for.

Other than that, I would try to re-install, sometimes windows just doesn't stick to your hard drive properly

Hi Folks.

Thanks for all the previous help.

Will purchase a new External HD, and per your advice will get a WD.
Need 1 TB, or perhaps 1.5 TB.

Read all the reviews for their various models, and one can really go nuts trying to figure out
which would be the most reliable.

I don't need portability, slimness, super-small size, super speed, etc.
My sole concern, after losing what was on a Seagate, is reliability.
Am also quite happy to live with a wall wart.
Must be USB 2.0 compatible.

Reading the reviews of a bunch of their models, it seems, for all of them, that
20 -25 % of users have had problems.
Thousands that don't, but a goodly number, for all I looked at, did after a short time or right out of the box. Luck of the draw, perhaps.

So, might anyone recommend a WD model or two that they feel is a cut above the rest re reliability ?

And, please:

Should I seriously also consider Hitachi ?
Do they actually make their own, or are they repackaged WD or Seagate's ?

BTW: Are the ones with wall warts more reliable than the USB powered ones ?

Much thanks, as always,

Answer:Which WD External HD To Purchase ?

Western Digital bought Hitachi's hard drive business 3 or 4 years ago, but both brand names are still in use. I don't know if Hitachi is possibly semi-independent within WD and has hard drive designs that are noticeably different from WD. That's possible, but I don't know how to confirm it.

If you don't need portability, you might consider an internal rather than an external. You'd gain speed since your data would not have to negotiate the USB interface at all, you'd avoid issues related to the enclosure, and you wouldn't have any worries about a wall wart.

I have a second internal that is purely for backup purposes. I've never even owned an external. I additionally make occasional backups to a third internal in an external dock, but the second internal is my workhorse backup drive. Completely backs up about 95,000 files and rarely takes more than 70 seconds to do so.

You're never going to avoid the issue of being sickened by the number of negative reviews you see for whatever drive strikes your fancy. Try to avert your eyes. Otherwise, take into consideration that some of that is user error and that those who have a poor experience with a particular brand/model are much more likely to make a review than those who were satisfied.

I chased my tail on this issue for several months last year when I was shopping for a new second internal drive. All of it pointless although I was emotionally incapable of doing otherwise. Eventually, you have to hold your nose and take the plu... Read more

Have a budget of trying to keep it under $600I am confused about the differences with Tseries, ideapad, etc. Also 1GB, VS 2or 3, and the 160GB, vs 250   OK so now you all see how tech ittiterate I am.He will mostly use this for school, writing papers, research, power-point, some emailing, surfing the net. Any assistance I would appreciate as to a good student computer.

Answer:Confused as to which lap-top to purchase

Welcome to the forum! My suggestion would be T400, with at least 2GB of RAM, these can be found at Lenovo Outlet quite often around $600.  Another option would be R400. As for the hard disk size, 160GB is a reasonable minimum nowadays. Hope this helps.

I am thinking about buying this CPU...
I have the Asrock Dual sata 2 939pin for a mobo. This looks to me like a good CPU for the price. Or is there a better option?? Is the FX series better than the X2?? I couldnt find an FX in a 939 pin. So im thinking this is the best option. Thanks for your input!!!

Answer:Please rate my purchase....

The FX series was premium, but surprisingly little left in Socket 939. You have about the best available.

I want to buy a T500 today and I am having a very difficult time making up my mind when it comes to the hard drive. I don't really have the money to upgrade to an SSD, but I would rather be a little more in debt if it is hands down a far superior choice.  I will choose either the 128Gb SSD, the 320GB HDD (7200RPM 0r 5400). From the research I have done, the things I am most concerned about when it comes to the SSD are drive life, time degredation, and the quality of the drive itself. I am unclear how much of a difference an upgrade like this will produce. I would really appreciate hearing any and all advice. I want to get this things done so I can stop agonizing. Thanks.

Answer:T500 SSD vs HDD (new purchase)

A good SSD would definitely be very beneficial to a laptop. I have a T500 myself, I have upgraded the harddrive to a 120GB OCZ Vertex. Whether if it's benchmarks or normal day use, I can tell you that it is a LOT faster than any traditional laptop harddrive I have a Seagate 7200.4 myself. Whether you should upgrade the harddrive depends on what you do with ur laptop, because SSDs are still very expensive these days. If you travel a lot SSD will help a lot since it is not affected by shock, SSDs will also make your thinkpad dead silent. With regard to the 128GB SSD lenovo offers, it is a samung SSD, personally I would not recommend you to buy this SSD, you will not notice much performance gain from the traditional harddrive, because the samsung SSD lenovo offers is a bit old, and is slow only 90MB/s read and 70MB/s write. A good SSD would be the OCZ Vertex or if you have the money Intel X-25M. The OCZ Vertex with the newest firmware 1.4 already supports TRIM, which will cure the drive degradation problem, the Intel X25-M drive will also support TRIM in the coming month. With regards to drive life, the expected life for a SSD will be at least 10 years, by then i'm sure you would have upgraded to a new computer anyway.

I want to order a new T400 with 6 GB RAM.  Can someone please tell me: 1) What is the maximum RAM? 2) If want 6 GB ram, isn't it much cheaper to order the machine with 2GB and then order 4 more GB as an accessory and install it myself?  3) I don't coompletely understand the difference between 1 DIMM and 2 DIMMS and the huge price difference. If I order a machine with 2 GB what should I order to upgrade it to 4 GB?  4) In the warranty options, they use the term "Top Seller."  What does that mean? Thanks

Answer:Pre-purchase questions

1) What is the maximum RAM?8GB. (Maybe more in the future when higher-capacity DIMMs are available?) 2) If want 6 GB ram, isn't it much cheaper to order the machine with 2GB and then order 4 more GB as an accessory and install it myself?  3) I don't coompletely understand the difference between 1 DIMM and 2 DIMMS and the huge price difference. If I order a machine with 2 GB what should I order to upgrade it to 4 GB?There are (2) slots. Each of which may hold a DIMM with 1GB, 2GB or 4GB capacity. You get a small speed boost if you use two DIMMs of the same capacity. 4GB DIMMs are currently very expensive. 4) In the warranty options, they use the term "Top Seller."  What does that mean?Nothing important to the consumer, AFAIK. Happy shopping,Frank

Question: laptop purchase

OK, my parents just bought 2 laptops, one for business, and one for personal use. I would like to know how they are, and if they will last for awhile without spending another $1000 for a new laptop.

Business Notebook:
Toshiba M70 Intel Celeron M 1.6 Ghz
15.4" Widescreen
512MB DDR2 533Mhz RAM
8X Super Multi DVD burner
128MB ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Integrated

Personal Notebook:
HP Pavilion ML37 AMD Turion 64 2.0 Ghz
17" Widescreen
1GB DDR2 533Mhz RAM (Upgraded)
2X 80GB HD
8X LightScribe DVD burner
128MB ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Integrated
6-in-1 Card Reader

So...did i recommend good laptops, or should i have recommended Acer?

BTW - I dont like Acer, only because my uncle bought one, and it's painfully slow. Even worse than mine.

Answer:laptop purchase

Toshiba, to my knowledge, makes good laptops. And since youre not using them for graphic intense operations theres no reason why they shouldnt last for a very long time. From experience, when it comes to laptops and longevity, the most important thing is quality. You have a couple solid names there, so Id feel good. I had a crap KDS laptop with a fan that always failed; I doubt you'll have those kinds of problems.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking to purchase a new PSU for my machine. I used the watt calculator here ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Recommended Power Supply Wattage Calculator and determined that I need at the least a 400 W PSU.

I realize that when it comes to PSU's it is more complicated than, "the more watts the better". Just curious what would work with my system. Here are my specs:

Computer type: Desktop

Manufacturer: Custom build

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

CPU: AMD Phenom (tm) II X4 925 Processor

Motherboard: Asus MSO-M4N68T-MV2(B)

Memory: 4 GB

Graphics Card(s): ATI Radeon HD 5570

Hard Drives: Hitachi HDS721010CLA332

Apologies if I forgot something.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Want to purchase a new PSU. Any suggestions?

I believe in power supplies with a little more watts and 12+ amps.
If it was my computer I would select something in the 600/650 watt and 40+ amp on the 12v+
I also recommend a full modular power supply. They are a bit more money but they are worth it. These two below should give you quality but are not full modular.

or the Corsair.

Hello. Just asking here as I trust the folks here. Not wanting to turn this into a battle, just want an opinion.
Wife is starting a 3 yr Phd in nursing, online. (at home) I'm going to buy her a new laptop and have decided on a i7 processor. Just unsure if it really needs to be dual or quad. Just need the speed for getting between apps. Will not be gaming and so-forth. Next question, which machine then to get? Doesn't need to be touch screen either. Really only interested in better keyboard and battery life. I bought her this little Toshiba Sattelite with i3 processor 3 yrs ago for her BSN and is still alive. Just fast and reliable. Thank you DM

Answer:laptop purchase with i7

Unlikely you would need the power of an i7. An upper level i5 is very strong.

If the i7 is in your budget range, go ahead on.

Get a quad core. I'm not sure off hand if there are dual-core i5s anyway.

If at all possible, get one with an SSD (solid state drive). She'll appreciate it every operating moment, whereas she might never appreciate an i7.

Most laptops will have only one hard drive, so presumably you'd get one with maybe a 250 or 500 GB SSD. If you buy one that has two hard drives, you'd likely have Windows on the SSD and use the standard hard drive for storage.

I'd say the better way to go would be to get a machine with one hard drive--an SSD, and then use an external hard drive for backup and/or more storage if needed.

You can always get an add-on keyboard to bypass the laptop's keyboard.

Battery life: read reviews for info on that. The harder you work the machine, the lower the battery life, but there have been a lot of improvements in that area in the last few years.

As for specific recommendations, I can't make any as I don't use laptops. The usual suspects would be Dell, HP, Lenovo, and maybe Toshiba. Maybe Asus? I'd avoid Acer due to horror stories about customer service. I wouldn't expect stellar customer service for any of them--just hope you don't need to use it.

Find a few prospective machines in your price range and post links to them so we can have a look.

Here's some i5 laptops with SSD:

Hey everybody,

I'm just looking for a little advice here. In January, I purchased a computer for 500 dollars.
The specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon XP2200+ , 1.8 GHz
256MB PC2700 DDR
52x CDRw
80GB Hard Drive
64MB AGP Video
10/100 NIC / Sound / 56k
Floppy / Keybd / Optical Mouse / Spk
WinXP Pro and Norton Antivirus
1 Year Parts & Labor

So, there were a lot of issues I won't get into, but, the only crucial information for this post is that I did not get an AMD Athlon XP2200+ , 1.8 GHz processor. Instead, I rec'd AMD Duron 1.2 Ghz (which, inside it says it's a 2200+, so maybe it's a AMD Duron XP2200+, 1.2 GHz processor). I also rec'd 80 GB because 60 GM was not available the time.

The time has passed for returns and because I paid via paypal(the owner claimed his credit card machine was down), getting a refund through my credit card company is near impossible because 1) I have no proof of an attempted return and 2) the credit card company would investigate paypal, not the store I bought it from.

So, my only real concern is 1) I don't want to lose money on this investment 2) when I click on the icons, there is a delay in how long it takes for the application to start up.

I talked with the owner and he still claims to not have AMD Athlon 1.8. He claims he's losing money on this and I basically bought the system at cost.

He has offered 2 solutions:

1) He'll give me an additional 256 MB in memory and overclock the 1.2 Duron.

2) He'll gi... Read more

im looking to buy a geforce gtx 770 gpu. there are various versions of the card all with various clock speeds.

the only difference i can see are the clock speeds, am i correct in saying this?

would i be as well buying a cheaper model and overclocking it myself or put the extra cash towards buying one that is already overclocked?

Answer:gpu purchase advise

No, you are not correct. As with most things you get what you pay for. Quality mfg such as evga charge more for their cards for a reason; they use quality parts ie capacitors, memory, etc. Cheap cards like an ecs card use cheap parts.

Remember the card maker purchases the actual chip from nvidia. The rest of the parts on the card, ie fan, caps, etc are provided by the mfg. In the case of a cheap card, they use the cheapest they can find.

Can someone please tell me how to purchase a new motherboard for my Lenovo G50-70.  It is only a few months old, but it has been damaged in a manner not covered by warranty.  Lenovo staff transfered me several places and no one could help me.  One person could not even understand my language.  I have sent emails, but recieved no replies.  I have contacted my local service agent and they have contacted Lenovo in an attempt to get a board for me.  They were advised by Lenovo they could not assist me in Australia as my laptop was purchased in India.  This is absolute rubbish.  It was purchased online from Lenovo Australia.  I hope they have not infact sent me one from another country, rendering it impossible to get parts.....  I require a Lenvo G50-70 motherboard.  Thank you.

Answer:Purchase of new motherboard

Hi Laptop09,
Is this because of the bad bios flash?  I would try to escalate it and try to get it covered under warranty. A new board will probably cost you upwards of 350.00 US.
Does your machine have touch?  There's a board on Ebay for touch for 329.00 US that ships worldwide.

Well, the keyboard is now the island-style one on all ThinkPads starting with *30 series.

My current Thinkpad T61 is 6 years old & without going into details, it's telegraphing it's time to replace.

Having gone through this drill many times I've fairly well learned what to look for and pay for in a new machine (I will be staying with the Thinkpad--since the machine largely stays home weight is not an issue). However, there are several particulars that I would like to run by the experts.

1. I will order an SSD primary drive (and the optional drive for the DVD bay). Do you need to be particular about manufacturer and spec with an SSD as you might with a traditional drive?

2. Is there a significant performance increase with a 4 core vs. 2 core processor and if so, can laptops generally handle a 4 core?

3. Since I keep my computers for 5+ years and I've yet to buy one where I haven't had to upgrade memory later on (for example, this machine had 2GB at purchase and now has 4) and given the low current cost of memory and that I'd 'normally' now order a machine with 8GB...I'm thinking that 16GB makes sense (assuming the laptops can normally hold that amount with a 64 bit OS)?

4. Lastly and probably most important--I do not need to buy a machine right this minute. 'If' Intel will be introducing a significantly better (performance + battery duration) laptop chipset within the next 6 months or so, I'd hold off?

Comments appreciated--

Answer:A few purchase parameters

Just my opinion on question #3. The average individual is usually fine with 4GBs; however, 8GBs would be great but I think 16GBs is really overkill but if money is no object and/or you perceive the need, then go for it. Good luck.
