Preferred Solution: Computer turns on and loads to HP screen then turn off

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Computer turns on and loads to HP screen then turn off

Hi @dukedevil74, Welcome to HP Forums! I have read your post and wanted to help. I understand that when you turn on the laptop, it loops at the HP logo screen. In order to better assist you, can you provide the product number of your laptop? If the computer locks up at the HP or Compaq logo screen or the Windows loading screen, try cleaning the computer vents with compressed air. Restart the computer. If Windows 10 opens, you are done. If Windows 10 does not open, go to Troubleshooting other issues with computer not starting. Let me know how it goes. If this helps you to reach a solution, please click the "Accept as Solution" button down below in this message. If you wish to say "thanks" for my effort to help, click the "thumbs up" to give me Kudos. Regards,

Hello,

I have an EMachines GenuineIntel 1690 mhz processor, with Windows XP PC. One day the computer shut itself off and would not come back on and, since I was in the middle of taking online job training and could not afford to miss even one day, I rushed out and bought another pc. I put the non-functioning one away in a closet. Recently, I took it out of the closet and plugged it into a power outlet with a new power cord. To my surprise, it turned on, but it turned off by itself after about one hour or so. I kept pressing the on button but it would not come back on. Also, I think I detected a funny chemical smell. The fan is on, by the way.

Any idea of what could be wrong? Windows loads perfectly and runs perfectly while it's on.

Thanks - Jose

Answer:Computer Won't Turn On/Turns Off

Take the side of the machien off an with a bright light look at the capacitors. The capitors are the small can like objects on your motherboard. See if any have swollen bulging tops, or are leaking a brownish looking fluid. If you see any with these characteristics this indicates bad capacitors. You may also smell a amonia like smell.

You can look here to see what you are looking for.

I don't know a lot about computers in general. Lately I have been having problems with my Toshiba laptop that runs Windows 8.1. my first problem was that the brightness wouldn't change. There was a windows update that fixed it. Then yesterday my computer said it had a virus (it was Windows Defender I think) it said that Pokki was a virus. Pokki has been on my computer by default and it is just now finding out it was bad? Then yesterday when I tried turning my computer off, it turns off then it turns on 5 seconds after. I don't have any virus protection besides the default one. I just want to be able to turn off my computer.

Thinking it was the power strip it was being defective and not getting enough power i pluged it directly into the wall...

Answer:My Computer will Turn On and Then Immediately Turns Off

Make a bootable CD with Memtest86 (make on another computer) to test you memory for errors. Reset BIOS to boot from CD/DVD drive as first in the boot order, put in the disk and restart (you may need to "hit any key to boot from CD" if/when prompted).Repeat with Hard Drive Test Utility from your hard drive mfg (or use Seatools from Seagate) to test your hard drive for errors.Use Windows 7 install, Repair Disk, or Recovery Disk to do a start up repair.Use Repair Disk to do a System Restore. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi,

As the title says, if I turn my computer off, wait for every hard drive to stop spinning, then turn my subwoofer off at the switch on the back (not stand by mode) it will turn the computer back on again...

I thought it was some kind of WOL or something, but i've turned all that off and it still keeps waking it up.

Any ideas?

Hm, very cool poltergeist material.
I've never used subwoofers or had any nice speakers for that matter, but how are the speakers set up? Do any other speakers have power buttons, if so this doesn't happen when you turn them off? How many plugs are there going from the speakers to the computer, and what exactly are they? I remember in my old computer's BIOS there was a "wake on mouse input" and/or "wake on keyboard input", could you have something similar to that enabled in your BIOS?

hi Unknown Soldier here. My real name is Harris, im from Singapore and im currently facing this issue regarding the fact that whenever i start my Acer Aspire Z5610 touch screen computer, the screen always turns black, and thus not allowing the computer to respond or start up. Though it works sometimes and i get to use it quite often by restarting it many times, the same problem randomly strikes back and i have to go through the same old frustration of restarting it many times to get it to work properly. The computer does not work now so i really need some suggestions to get it to function normally other than send it for repair which would waste a lot of money and time. My problem definitely has got nothing to do with whatsoever video or graphics card issue. Click on the attachment below to see the computer that i use. Thank you

My charger port broke and when i replaced it, it has broken my laptop, when I turn on my laptop, the lenovo logo screen appears, then it turns off and repeats the process, I have tried it with different RAM, booting from OS iso on a memory stick, disconnecting and reconnecting the CMOS. I was just wondering if there is anything else I can try to get it to work. Thanks.

A few months ago i built a system through a popular computer company, ibuypower, and was initially pleased with the performance of my PC. I was then forced to take a few months away from the system due to work, during which it was stored in a safe dry location. Upon returning the system had the issue stated in the title. I have replaced the power supply with a far better one (went from 450w to a 700w) and the same issue peristed with the new power supply, which works with the tester it was shipped with. I've read about it possibly being the Ram, so i have ordered a 16gb ddr3 ram upgrade (2x - 8gb sticks) and they should be here within a week. I also read that it may be the CMOS battery but those are unable to be shipped through the mail so im having trouble tracking those down here in Japan. If somone could help me figure this out i would greatly appreciate it. I've cleaned and tested everything i can and i can't find an issue other than it physically wont function. Also, in case anyone was wondering this thread was written from my laptop, not the PC.

Much Apreciated

Is it possible to make a specific software that i have downloaded on my pc turn on automatically whenever my computer turns on without me having to do anything?

Answer:How to have a software turn on automatically when my computer turns on

You can add it to the starup programs. Here is how:

1. Make a shortcut of this program on the desktop.
2. Press Start and type shell:startup, then press Enter
3. Drag the shortcut of your program into the folder that just opened
4. Close the folder

With the next boot, that program will start automatically.

Background: The desktop is about 14 years old. I look at old files from time to time and it has worked fine (but very slow) up until the other day. I can get into BIOS, which I reset to the default, but not into safe mode.

When I turn the computer on it starts loading as usual. The Windows logo comes up then it goes into a black screen while it loads. After about a minute, when it should start populating the icons it appears to shut off and then immediately turn on again and repeats this cycle over and over. Any ideas what it could be?

Yesterday, I spilled a little bit of coffee on my laptop. It got on a few keys but not a lot at all. It worked fine, then I didn't use it for a few hours. Went to go do some school work and it wouldn't turn on and hasn't turn on since. When the charger is plugged in, the light comes on and it charges but no other lights come on and the computer won't turn on. I tried a hard reset but that didn't work. I really don't want to lose everything on my computer, I need it for my classes. I took it to my colleges tech department and they cleaned it and said there didn't seem to be water damage to the motherboard so i'm not sure if he just missed it or if something else is the problem. I have a HP Probook 4730s and it has an i7 processor, 8gb ram, 700GB HDD. I have this new software program called Corel Videostudio Pro. I am in the middle of rendering a large 20GB HD video and all of a sudden the computer shuts off. And the weird thing is that I cannot turn it back on, even when plugged in. I can only turn it back on when I remove the battery and replace it.
What can I do to finish this rendering of my video without the computer shutting down?

Answer:Computer turns off, can only turn on when battery removed and put back in?

Install this software CPUID Hardware Monitor and check your system temps when you are rendering the video, I suspect an overheating issue.

This morning I came to my computer and it had a BSOD from my wireless adapter driver. This has happened a few times before. But when I turned it off and tried to turn it back on, it wont start! As soon as I press the power button, the lights flash and the fans get one jolt of power causing them to spin and die out immediately and then everything stops in under a seccond. What could be causing this? I did add a new new hard drive to my computer yesterday, but it has restarted fine a few times since then, and unplugging it didn't fix the problem. Other than that, I can't think of anything that is different that would be causing this. Any ideas?

My friends computer (Compaq Presario SR1033WM-B PC
Intel Celeron Processor 2.8 GHz 512 MB DDR SDRAM 80 GB hard drive Windows XP) recently started having problems. When you try and turn it on, the Compaq logo comes on, then the bios info, then everything goes black. The monitor is still on but nothing happens. Does this sound like a RAM problem? The hard drive works fine in my computer as a slave (he was paranoid about losing files). Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you...........

Reseat the memory, make sure that the case is dust free.

If there are 2 sticks of RAM, try 1 at a time. Try 1 in different slots.

Post back after you have tried all this.

Hey everyone, I'm having some problems with my laptop.. It starts up fine, but when I get into windows it hangs on the screen before the log-in one (Or before Windows loads on the non-multiple user computer) I can move the mouse around freely, but it just doesn't progress to the next stage. After going into "Take computer back to last known good configuration" I got this popup saying that a Registry key was restored sucessfully, but I still get the same result. I tried going into safe mode, and the same. I'm pretty sure the missing reg key was taken out by Ashampoo Winoptimizer Platinum Suite Regcleaner, and the backup is in the Recycling Bin, not deleted. Does anyone know of any way to get into that and restore that without causing any large damage? (like reinstalling the OS, installing another OS, etc...I cant do any of this) I'm thinking possibly getting one of those OS's that run completely off a CD, would I be able to get into the recycling bin with these? Can I get into there with DOS? (Safe mode with command prompt) I remember seeing this All-in-one computer restore CD on sharereactor.com...would this be able to work? Right now reformat is boredering on not possible and absolutely worst-case-scenario. Thanks in advance for any help.

So one day a week or two ago I turned on my PC to say that it had an issue and it needed the windows installation disk to repair it. So I put the disk into the PC and I clicked repair and it took a long time but it said all issues are resolved. I was happy as I thought I solved my problem, however, to my disappointment I was wrong. The computer reset and I saw the dell logo and the loading bar moving across and everything however after I wait the screen turns black but i can still see my mouse cursor and if I move the cursor around I can see it move but just my wallpaper is not there, the windows bar is not there, my folders and shortcuts aren't there nothing is. I tried pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up task manager but that does not work. I didn't make a backup recently and I put the repair disk back in and I scan for issues and it says there are no issues. I'm at a loss here and I'm desperate. I have all of my photos that I have taken from my vacations over the past 4 years and I can't get to them so I was really hoping that you guys could help me fix my PC. If anyone could  help me I would gladly appreciate it.

Hey Jason,

Some times 3rd Party software creates conflict during the startup.
You can try booting into Safe mode with Networking and disable unwanted 3rd Party Startup Programs and services from MSCONFIG and Task Manager in case of windows 8. You can also run a malwarebytes scan to check for Malwares.

After downloading all the windows xp updates, the stop messages stoped and the computer ran great. However, after the second restart and all consecutive restarts after that the computer doesnt load up into windows.

" When you start your computer, the Microsoft Windows XP startup screen appears, and then the computer may restart. The Windows XP logon screen does not appear. " Appears to state my problem exactly. The windows loading bar apears, but as soon as it fininishes the screen turns black and nothing hapens. The only thing that seems to work for me is reinstalling or repairing windows. Which takes a good 30-50 minutes. And after that is finished I am back to the stop error messages etc...that sare solved with the windows updates. However once the updates are isntalled the computer doesnt boot into windows after the first restart.

I have been looing at the windows xp help page and found this:

----->support.microsoft.com/kb/310396/EN-US/

I have tried to follow the instructions step by step but it doesnt work. When I get into the recovery I do the first step. But when I try to rename the files in step 2, they cant be found and it doesnt work. Then when I try to 'expand' the file it can not be found either. I really dont know what to do about this problem.

After getting a couple blue screens I am having the following issue:

When I turn my computer on, the fans and drives all start up. After approx. 2 seconds the computer shuts itself off. After another 2 seconds the computer turns itself back on again. This time it stays on but i have no monitor output. I don't hear a beep which tells me it is probably not posting.

I have read a few other threads that have a similar issue but not the same. I am thinking it is either the mobo, GPU, or PSU.

I would like any guidance and assistance that you guys can give me on this specifically what i should look at first and how to diagnose. Thanks. system specs below:

ASUS P5Q Pro ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896-P3-1265-AR Video Card

I have helped somebody who had a similar issue and it was the motherboard being shorted out by the case. We took the motherboard out of the case and it booted up just fine. Something you might want to try before purchasing new components.

This is something that has happened a few times before but was fixed with a simple system restore. I have a windows vista 32 bit with norton antivirus and malwarebytes anti malware, and the combination of the two seems to work out... most of the time.
The problem is exactly one night my computer will be working fine, then the next day i will try to sign in (im not administrator) and it takes a while at the welcome screen and sends me to a black screen and there i stay. I can exit back into welcome screen by control alt delete, and there i can sign in as administrator. This time, system restore is not helping and when i do get onto the admin desktop, i can spot a few out of the ordinary things. One is that my norton is turned off, windows security alerts has a nice red X (and a peak inside the security alerts it informs me that windows firewall is off, norton internet security is off, windows defender is off, and user acount control as well) and finally it says i have no internet connection. This last part is strange as i am typing to you on the infected computer so apparently i do have internet.

I have run Combofix which didnt detect anything too obscene, and i am currently running a full system scan with norton, which is on yet windows security tells me otherwise. I smell a virus, yet i cannot find one. Help would be appreciated.

Also, the previous night i downloaded a few windows updates, one of which was marked important and a few small ones. I mention this as i have h... Read more

Hi,
I've had this problem for a while now, and I'd really like to find a solution to it. When I try to access my email account through www.godaddy.com, my computer opens the page, begins loading it, completes loading it, but the screen remains white. It displays the word DONE down in the lower left hand corner, but nothing is actually shown. Ironically, my computer only does this when I go to this particular site, any other websites, it works perfectly fine. I'd really like to figure this out, as I need to be able to access my email account.

The actual site that I try to view is:
https://email.secureserver.net/login...rog_id=GoDaddy

But when I try to visit that site, nothing is displayed on the screen, but it seems as if my computer has actually loaded it.

I'm running Windows XP with 512MB RAM.

And obviously, I'm using Internet Explorer.

If anyone has any solutions or feedback on this problem, that would be greatly appreciated, as it is becoming rather frustrating.

Thanks.

Answer:Internet Explorer loads website, but nothing is displayed on computer screen

You might want to try adding it to your "Trusted Sites".

In internet explorer- Tools>Internet Options>Security Tab> click on trusted
sites and then click on the "Sites" button to the right. In the box provided, either cut/paste the url of the site you are going to or type it in and then
click ok. This might do it for you.

Hello, my computer gets to the black Windows XP load screen with the loading bar and it just stays there, loading and loading and loading. All the safe modes and last known good config don't work either, they just get stuck loading.
I haven't installed any new hardware or software, and there was no BSOD. this just happened suddenly one day with no prior warning, and now I can't access my pictures and music and such.
I tried to repair from the Windows XP CD and it also just gets stuck and does nothing.
If you need specs, tell me.

Please help me and thank you.

Hi doubt and welcome to TSF
Can you start in Safe Mode?
Tap F8 repeatedly whilst the computer is first starting and it will give you the option to start in Safe Mode. See if that is any quicker or if it's the same and post back.

Edit: Just seen that you have checked Safe Mode. Have you got your XP CD?

My laptop is a Gateway 450 ROG and it has had this problem for the last week. It will run for roughly 40 minutes, and then (even when small programs are running) it will freeze up. My mouse wont move, no command will respond and i am forced to hold the power button and shut it off.
2nd Problem, occasionally when i turn on the computer it wont boot up. The screen will turn on and stop with a dash blinking in the top left corner, not proceeding to any boot up of any kind, and just recently while i shut it down from this sort of freezing up, little pictures of pixel hearts and dots started appearing until i shut it off. This problem has gone on since i bought this computer from my brother but the pictures havent until this last week .

Hi,

My computer's screen recently turns off once in a few hours. Sometimes days.
Before it turns off, the computer gets stuck for 2 seconds.

I wonder if it's overheating of the CPU or something else.

What do you think?

Answer:Computer screen turns off

I've connected another screen to my PC and it just turned off, so the PC itself is the problem.
Any idea what can cause this?

Ok so my brothers computer will turn on but there is no screen, it says "no Signal".

heres the story. When I unplug the computer from the wall then plug it back in, it will turn on automatically. The computer will also not show anything on the screen..I've tried changing out power supplies, video cards (the current video card he is using is on board, I switched to after market) I also tried changing all power cords and display cords. I'm not sure what else it could be other than maybe the motherboard or harddrive? Its a Dell with windows xp I don't know much more about it other than its not a pavilion is a custom build from a local dealer. Any and all insight/advice would be helpful, thank you.

Answer:Computer Turns on but no screen?

Try clearing the CMOS. There should be a jumper on the motherboard labeled "CMOS CLEAR". If you can't find this jumper, then remove the battery, unplug the computer from the wall, and push the power button. After this it should boot. If it does not boot make sure that the PC Speaker is plugged in to the appropriate jumper and pay attention to the code coming from it.

Report back with your findings as clear and concise as possible.

MOTHERBOARD: M3N-HD HDMI
CPU: AMD 6400 duo core
RAM: 4gigs
Video: Geforce 8900

I was playing a game when the system just turned off. Prevously, I had a few times it reboot. The system will turn on ( fans and leds' ) and HD loads and CD loads but I get no video on monitor nor do I hear any system beeps or seems like it is getting past the BIOS load. I took the machine to a shop and they said my PSU was bad... So I purchased a new one online since nobody locally carries anything above a 450w same one as I had before 700W. I installed new PSU but I get the same simptoms.

I took out the motherboard out of the case and put only 1 stick of ram in it reseated the cpu with heatsink and fan with new heat paste. Plugged in the VGA adaptor for onboard video. Plugged power into the motherboard at the main adaptor and the cPU 12v. I short the power swt to turn it on and I get the same thing. Fans turn on LED on. No beeps or video. I tried a 2nd speaker and tried again no change. Any suggestions?

Answer:Computer turns on but no screen

It's possible you let your computer get too hot and it burnt up the motherboard... that or possibly the graphics card... if it's getting power but not posting, then it's not your power supply, although it may have been bad too. It's either going to be your motherboard, graphics card, or processor... a failure in either three could cause it to not show up... You saying it doesn't have any bios beeps leads me to believe it's either the motherboard or the processor, not just the graphics card.

Ok, I've been going through some of my old stuff and found some old computers, and i've been trying to build a system from different parts. These are the following:

Videocard: 7600gt
Motherboard: P4 Titan 533 GA-8SR533
RAM: 1gb PC3200 DDR HYNIX
CPU: Pentium 4. (im 99.99% sure, but the written stuff has been rubbed off =(..)
PSU: Codegen 300W

I've built this system, took it apart, dusted it all off did EVERYTHING i can to try and fix it. When i try and turn it on, it turns on, (i can tell by the fans spinning and lights turning on the MB) but nothing comes up on the screen. I know its not the monitor because when i plugged the monitor out of the videocard, it says no signal on the screen. When i turn the computer on im pretty sure its not the videocard because the screen's power is blinking with green? (thats what i read from the internet )

So i tried my best to fix up this old computer, and the last option i need is anything involving MONEY, (Im veryyy short on money atm...)

Thankss =]

Answer:Computer turns on but nothing on screen

Have you installed the drivers for the 7600GT ?
That is probably not the problem, but the card may be defective... How do you know the video card is good? If not working, it may not show anything on the screen.
Can you test it in a friend's machine?

Today when I opened up my Asus K55n laptop, it came out of hibernation mode and I saw that the battery was very low, at this point Windows was working fine--I ran to get my power adapter and then came back to find that the laptop had died. Upon powering it back on, I got the AMD logo screen, and now one of three things will happen after the AMD splash screen:

-Screen turns off completely

-Screen turns black and freezes (I've waited up to 20 minutes for anything to happen)

-A Windows 8 (!!?) troubleshoot screen appears, giving me some options (refresh PC, reset, advanced options)

The first thing I did when I bought this laptop was to scrap Windows 8 and install 7 from scratch. After installing all the 7 drivers for the laptop, everything worked fine. I've had it now for about two months and have never had any issues. There have been no ominous lingering signs of Windows 8, so I'm very confused by the troubleshoot screen.

I tried working through just about every option on the Win8 troubleshoot screen. There were no system restore points found, and nothing else I tried helped. I do have my Windows 7 installation CD but when I hit the repair option, it says that this disk is not compatible with this version of Windows... odd.

My last course of action was to set Windows to restart in safe mode from the command prompt, which I was able to access through the Windows 8 screen. Still, the monitor turns off after the AMD screen. Command prompt was giving me "X:... Read more

So yesterday I got a blue screen of death. I didn't read it, I just restarted teh comp. Well ever since then, teh computer loads slowly and when it does get to windows, it just has a black screen w/ just the cursor that I can move around.

Here are things I've tried

a) booting to safe mode (same thing, but with safe mode written in the corners)
booting to command prompt (doesn't work, it boots to safe mode w/ black screen)
c) ctrl+alt+del to run explorer.exe (can't ctrl+alt+del)
d) right clicking (doesn't work)
e) windows cd -> repair an installation using recovery console (didn't know what to do from here), but explorer.exe is in the folder

Anyother options?

A few things I've noticed

a) the screen saver still comes on
rarely it will get all the way to the "log in" screen. I think this happens if I let it sit for hours.

Memory issue?

Lately I have been having problems with my computer.
It turns itself off (it doesn't say "Windows is shutting down..", it just dies.) when I am using it. It turns off after a few hours, sometimes after a few minutes. Then I would have to wait a few minutes until I can turn it on. Because it would not turn on no matter how much you pressed the power button, so the only thing to do was to leave it for a while, and then it world turn on.

But now when you turn on the computer, it turns off seconds after you log in, and then the blue screen of death appears. The next time I tried to turn it on, I got the option to boot in safe mode, and it doesn't turn off. I left it on for a whole day and it didn't turn off.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 5150, running Windows XP Sp2 (I think). I will post more details soon, because the option for running in safe mode does not come up when I turn the computer on. I don't know how to boot up in safe mode because I am a computernoob .
I am typing this on my other computer if you're wondering.
Any help please?
Thanks.

It's probably just a coincidence that the problem started after McAfee. Why did you buy it in the 1st place? Microsoft Security Essentials is free as are several other AV programs. Try reinstalling your graphics drivers, if that doesn't help, try uninstalling McAfee. You can always reinstall it again.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...

Usually the amber color indicates a power problem... as if your power adapter or cable to the power adapter is broken, or the power socket is damaged.

Hi I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and I got it for my birthday, I think I got it on the 13th of September, it worked completely fine for a long time and then I can remember one day I just would not turn on, I tried and tried to get it to turn and it just wouldn't do it, the next morning it turned right on...with no problem at all, and then it was fine until about the end of January, then it turned off once and I got it to come back on after trying several times, then the next day when I went to use it again, it would turn on but the screen would not work, and it has been like this ever since, I have gone on the dell technical support website and they were no help at all. They had me taking out the hard drive, and the media board, and all of this other stuff and they didn't tell me anything, all they basically had me do was take it apart and put it back together. My father bought me this computer and it was the last birthday present I got from him before he passed away, so I am deeply attached to it. So if there is anything anyone can tell to do to fix this I would greatly appreciate it. THANK YOU.

Could be a number of things most likely your graphics card/ monitor, is your computer situated in a particulary warm or cold place?

Checked the fuse?

Is the environment particularly dusty?

Do the cables look secure in there ports?

Have you tried holding in the power button on your computer without any power leads in?

these are some basics to try, if that doesn't work we need to address a deeper issue.

Inverters and bad backlights can be hard to diagnose without just replacing the parts but it sounds as one or the other is out/going out.
If you check these out yourself, good luck. Laptops are a bear and unless you've done a few, a repair shop may be best.

Hi Everyone,
This is my first time posting on these forums. I have a dell inspiron 5447, and I love it. It looks great, and, for the most part, runs well. However, whenever I move the laptop, or even slightly touch it, whether i move the screen or touch the body of the laptop, the screen glitches on and off, sometimes a few times in quick succession. When this happens, the touchpad also disables itself, and sometimes turns itself back on, but I usually have to go in to mouse settings and disable the mousepad and reenable it for it to work. I am thinking I need to send it in to be repaired, but I am not sure what the problem could be, or how much it may cost. I am also a college student that needs a laptop, so I cannot be without one for a long time.

Thank you for your help.

Answer:Computer Screen turns on/off, touchpad does the same.

Please run the diagnostic tool to check the hardware on the system by following steps below.
1. Power off the system. Remove all peripherals except AC adapter
2. Power on system, quickly start tapping the F12 continuously until you see Preparing one time boot menu in the top right corner of the screen. In the boot menu, stroll down to Diagnostic and then click on it.  After quick tests, click on Hard drive, and select Thorough Test Mode.

Hello. I've come to hopefully find a solution to a boot up problem I'm having with my computer. There are several factors that I'm honestly not sure will play a role or not, mainly because I'm not very understanding when it comes to computers.

The problem is that when I push the power button of my computer, it sends no signal to my screen. I can't tell if it loads anything or not either. I can think of a few things that might have some effect on this, but I'm not sure.

About three months back after cleaning my neglected tower of dust and such, it started to shut off rapidly after boot up. To inspect the problem, I had a friend look at the computer. He removed the cooling unit on the Processor revealing that my 8year old computer had next to no thermal compound. So after putting of ordering some for about three months, we had applied some about 2 days ago. The computer then booted up fine, but seemed to have an excess amount of lag. So I wiped the computer and reinstalled XP tonight. When it was booted up, it worked fine, so I went into IE to download firefox as it's my preference, then started reinstalling my drivers. First I installed my Videocard, then kept my computer booted up for my sound drivers which I got from the Compaq homesite. After doing this, I rebooted my computer. Not I wanted to get simple things such as AIM and and Java. So when i go to boot up Firefox from it's default homepage, my computer shuts down. when I go to reboot it, it doesn't start and I'm ... I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700, 120 Gig HD, 3 Gig memory, 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT duo processor. NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra.

What happens is when i try and playing a source game for little while the screen goes black, sound skips, but the laptop still runs. Also happens when i click on certain internet links.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

Ok so, im trying to help my friend with her broken computer.
She got hit with the avsoft virus, It took me a while but I finally got malwarebytes on her system, and had to rename the .exe in order to get it to run in safemode and it seemed to have worked pretty well, i then wanted to boot it in normal mode and run a full scan to make sure we got everything.
Anyway, we were experimenting with it for whatever reason (i guess malware removal had us feeling brave) and we unhooked her monitor, and plugged her desktop computer via the monitor cord into my laptop. i know that you can plug a monitor into a laptop and use that instead of the laptop screen, so we wanted to see if it would work with the desktop instead of the monitor. You know, like use my laptop as the monitor and keyboard.
I went into the my laptops nvidia control panel and messed around with some of the settings
All of a sudden my laptop screen went black.
I just rebooted, and my laptop was fine but when we plugged her monitor back into her desktop and rebooted it would not reboot correctly.

The lights on the computer would turn on, you can hear it is running, the fans are running, it makes one beep, just like a normal startup. the screen displays a logo (not the windows logo) an everex logo for a few seconds, and then some text comes up (like normally) and looks like it proceeds to load but it flies by so quick you cant read it, and then nothing. A big black blank screen.

So, obviously I don't know whats wrong with my computer. I play WoW and that shouldn't be to hard on my system. Whenever I play, my screen goes all wonky after awhile, sometimes its 10min, sometimes it'll last an hour. There will be bars going across the screen and the graphics will be all screwed up. Sometimes my monitor will just shut itself off and won't turn back on, I'll have to restart to get it to turn on again. Other times my computer will beep and shut off completely, sometimes a blue screen will come up with a bunch of writing, but it turns off so fast that I don't have time to read what it says. Its usually fine doing anything else, browsing the net or even watching a movie, its when I play a game it gets all screwed up. When I'm not even touching the computer it occassionly turns off! Well idk if it actually turns off but my tower will go completely silent, then it will start up again but it'll be on the exact same screen it was on to begin with, it doesn't restart... idk what it does. But when that happens a msg comes up saying 'usb device not recoginized' and i have no usb devices plugged in that are not recognized. The unknown device is apparently 'Universal Serial Bus controllers'... idk what that is, but when i look in my device manager thats the only unknown device. Hopefully someone can help me!

My configuration is Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, X1950XTX Radeon, 2gb ram, 250HD, 500w powersupply.
So one day I'm using my computer, which had been working wonders for 3 months, and it just shuts down. Then it wouldn't turn back on, at all, no power anywhere. So, I replaced the power supply. I made no other changes other than the power supply. Now it powers up, all the fans turn on (including from the video card), LED light turns on, even the CD rom driver works but I get nothing at all on the screen. And since i get a blank screen with both of my monitors I can't see how it's a monitor problem. I also get no beeps when I turn the computer on, and although I am not sure, I think the hard drive disk spins.

I can't see how it would be the video card since it was previously working and nothing changed on that. The only thing that makes sense to me is that when the old power supply broke the motherboard or, i hope not, the CPU got damaged. Has anyone seem or heard of someone having a similar problem? What Should I try? How can I find out if its the mother board or the CPU malfunctioning? Thank you for the help.

Answer:Computer Turns on but Screen is Blank! Tried Everything, Please Help!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

First things first, when you installed the new PSU, did you connect the power cord to your graphics card? Did you connect two power connections to your motherboard? Both the 24 pin and the ATX12v connectors?

Assuming you did, I'd strip down to the basics to help with the troubleshooting. Remove your motherboard from the case, and set it on a box beside your case. Intall ONLY the cpu/heatsink, one stick of ram and your graphics card (unless you have onboard graphics as well, in which case do not install your graphics card).

Connect the case's speakers to the motherboard.

Connect your monitor to the graphics, and then use a screwdriver to quickly "short" the two pins normally connected to the case's power on switch.

Tell us exactly what happens at this point. What lights are on, what fans are spinning, and what beeps you are getting. Good luck!

Also, please give us your motherboard make/model number, as well as your PSU maker name.

On my motherboard I'm getting an error 62 (Installation of PCH runtime services) and when I tried using a new graphics card, I would get an A6 error (Detection of SCSI devices). Anyone know what's going on and how I can fix these errors? I am under the assumption right now that I fried my gpu but before I just go and buy a new one I'd like to be sure my problem is not solvable without new parts.

First off, this is my first time on these forums, and i'm not sure if it's in the correct ones, so if an admin can move it or something? thx,

Allright, so about 2 and a year ago i bought my MSI, which i've been enjoying quite a lot. I use it daily for gaming and school related work, but 2 days ago, the screen suddenly turned black (while gaming) and then said a kind of "RRRRRR" noise. I restarted it, and it worked fine again.

Today, the computer did the same thing 4 times, expect that the screen turned light blue this time. It still said the "RRR" sound, I update my drivers regularly, and i just updated them before it happened again. Restarting works by the way.

I'm using a MSI GT663R, with these specs:
CPU: Intel core I7-720QM
VGA: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 460m / 1,5GB DDR5
LED Panel: 15,6 FHD, 1920x1080 (Glare Type)
Ram: DDRIII 6GB (2GB*3)
HDD: 1TB (500GB*2 RAID 0) 7200RPM
RF: 802.11b/g/n

That's atleast what it says on the sticker on the PC, note that i'm not very good with computers and i'm really hoping to get a simple fix, because i don't want to use money to get it repaired if not necessary.

Thank you really much in advance, i really love my PC, and it was quite expensive, for what i earn, so i really hope it isn't broken or something similar

Turns out all my problems were an aged battery, according to the tech shop who reinstalled windows after some deeprooted viruses. But now my laptop won't shut down all the way, but the screen turns off. The keyboard's LEDs stay on, and the fan keeps blowing. It stayed that way for at least five minutes, between me getting a snack and coming back. I don't know if they reinstalled from the disc that shipped with the laptop or gave me a knew windows 7, but this particular issue only started when they reinstalled the OS.

Answer:Computer won't shut down, screen just turns off.

Nothing to do with default power options?

After running my computer for approximately 10 to 20 minutes the monitor shuts down without any warning and simultaneously the sound cuts off, rending my computer unresponsive and useless. I suspect it's overheating but I have never experienced these issues before, they are obviously obstructing my work.

I have an ADM Radeon HD 5670 and I have never experienced or noticed the device reaching over 60 Celsius. The ventilator works within normal parameters as far as I can see with the Catalyst Control software and as far as I know all drivers are up-to-date.

I have posted my system information in a previous post regarding BSOD here in case it is of any relevance.

I hope someone is able to provide me with some help, I'd hate to buy a new video card.

Answer:Screen turns off, computer frozen.

The PC itself shuts off or is it still on? This is an important factor!

If it just completely shuts off, most likely one of these:

You could be having a power supply going bad.

You could have a dead case fan.

Thermal paste and/or heatsink/fan on CPU has failed in some way.

Heating failure is something that just shows up one day, so welcome to the wonderful world of PCs.

This morning when I turned on my computer the screen image rippled a few times, then seemed to be ok. Shortly after that, the screen froze, became pixelated, then turned completely white. I shut the computer down, waited a few minutes then turned it back on. This happened 2 more times. What can be wrong with my computer? Do I have a virus or malware? And how can I fix it?

Hello, I've been experiencing this problem off and on for the past couple of months, where the computer screen just turns fuzzy and crashes, then five seconds later is completely black (like the monitor is on but is not connected to the computer) I believe this generally happens while I'm surfing the internet (Mozilla) , often (perhaps always, I'm not sure) when I'm watching streaming video.

Ran a couple of different anti-virus programs (Adaware, Malwarebytes' Anti Malware) and Adaware turned up a bunch of cookies.

This has only happened a few times, most of the time everything's fine. Any clue on what could be going on here?

Answer:Computer screen turns fuzzy and crashes

Sounds like a vid driver problem to me...I'd try uninstalling current video drivers and then installing fresh ones (either from CD or manufacturer's website).

This computer has been working since 2013, and just lately have I have been having issues. When turning on the computer, the computer sounds perfectly fine, all fans and everything works. There is no damaged, or burnt anything inside the computer. When turning on the computer my keyboard & mouse do not turn on, and the computer light works and doesn't work. I have tried everything that I can think of and anything that I have researched on the HP guides. And my computer still does not work. I have tried changing monitor, and the cables that connect to these monitors. I have bought a new PowerSupply and that made it work but once I had to restart it it did not turn back on (nothing pops onto the screen, it is black) I have a GTX Geforce 750ti FTW graphics card and nothing is damaged or misplaced. All connectors and connecitons work properly. I have reset the computer several times and it still does not work. Just now when turning on the computer the light (the botton) does not turn on, but the computer does indeed turn on. I don't understand that if there was something seriously wrong with the computer why it would sometimes work and sometimes not? If the motherboard was bad it wouldn't be working period, let alone working.  I really need some help, thank you.

Hey guys I'm hoping for some help on this one, since i can't seem to figure out what exactly is wrong. I've had my Y510 for about 2 years or so and the only thing ever to go wrong was the right hinge. All of a sudden the other day, I would turn my computer on and only the media buttons/ processor lights would turn on. The screen was totally blank, not even backlit or anything. I tried connecting the compter to an external monitor but I still didn't get anything. Even pressing the NOVO recovery button didn't do anything. Any Ideas would greatly be appreciated. UPDATE: I was reading an article/faq that showed very similar to my problem, however lenovo says I need to update my BIOS. But how would I even going about doing so when I can't even get the lcd to turn on?

Answer:Y510, Computer turns on but blank screen.

I have the same problem here please tell me more if you got the problem solved pls

Hi all,

My faithful desktop of 2 years has started pushing up daisies:
I was playing GTA5 when the monitor lost connection to the computer and I had to restart. When I started back up, the message that appears after a bluescreen popped up. This started happening more and more frequently, whenever I started any game, then sometimes when I'd just have Firefox open, then about half the time I tried to start up the computer it'd happen at the login screen.

I did a Malwarebytes scan a few days before this started happening and it turned up clean, and I haven't changed the hardware in 2 years. I tried updating my video card drivers, to no avail.

The weird thing is how inconistent it is--I was able to play GTA for several hours last night, then it happened again. Sometimes it automatically restarts, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the power light flashes. Sometimes it makes me go through Startup Repair (which never finds anything).

I have no idea what could be causing this. BlueScreenView says it's a graphics driver about half the time, but not all the time. Memtest86 said the RAM was fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I can post SysInfo results and the minidump files if they'd help; I'm on my laptop right now because the system in question is really unreliable.

Thanks in advance.

Heys, nice to meet everyone.
Well my first problem is that ever since i got my pc (6 yrs ago) it frequently restarted. So i turned off automatically restart & frequently got bsods. The first was DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL & the second one was PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. I searched on google the problems and it said something about my NIC & Sound Driver. So i decided to open up my computer and try to swap my NIC whilst in the process just check out my graphics card and my ram to see if it was faulty, After that i turned on my computer and at first it beeped, then made this screechy sound for a split second and i smelt something weird. After that i turned it off re-inserted the RAM, NIC, GC & when i turn it on i get a blank screen. Both my cd drives keep resetting or blinking and wont open up, All my fans work & the red light and green light under my power button just stays there.

Specs of my computer:
- Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
- NVIDIA Geforce4 MX440SE 64mb
- PC333 512mb RAM x 2 (1024mb)
- 80GB HD + 120GB HD
- GIGABYTE Motherboard (MODEL: GA-8SG800)

--

The BSODs are caused when i play games like; Counter-Strike & Warcraft III. Also while i listen to music using WMP10. It can sometimes just be caused from sitting there.

well last night my computer was working just fine, I shut down, went to bed, woke up today and turned on my computer where it restarted after about 2 seconds, the screen didnt even get a chance to turn on. I have unplugged all the connections in the back and replugged them in, i have open it up and cleaned all the dust and removed all the hardware and replaced it all again to make sure there wasnt a part that wasnt fitted correctly. I managed to get it get all the way to windows once but my keyboard wasnt working so when i tried rebooting to get my keyboard working the same problem came up now i cant get it back on I am pretty sure windows xp has nothing to do with this as it cant even get the screen on before it is restarting

Answer:Computer restarts on boot up before the screen even turns on

Hi ShikariAtryao. Welcome to TSF!

This could be a number of issues. Bad PSU, intermittent RAM module(s), bad device in your system, etc. If you have more than one RAM module, try removing all of them except for one and try booting again. Make sure that the one module you use is in the correct slot as well. Step through that process exchanging RAM modules until you've tried them all and see if you're able to boot.

You could also disconnect devices such as your CD/DVD player (both data and power cable) and try booting again. It's basically a process of illimination. Also check the power cable to the motherboard and such.

One other thing is to check the little cables that connect usually to the edges of the motherboard. One of them is for your HDD, one if for the POWER LED, etc. There are usually several of them. Make sure they are all seated correctly as well.

Good day!

Mike

Got the computer from a family member, I tried fixing it for them first and I thought it was the video card so I tried a different one and still nothing. So it was unplugged and stored for months then they just gave it to me. Well I took it home and started messing with it turned it on a cple of times nothing. Moved wires around put different psu in nothing, put it back to normal it started right up powered screen up I got into windows but it had a lot of lag so I went to restart it so I could do a fresh install and screen shut off... note when it wasn't working before this point the cpu fan ran at full rpm when turned on but slowed down when it worked this first time. I turned it on and off cple times nothing unplugged psuand back in it worked enough to reinstall windows and went to restart nothing. When plugged my speakers in to see if it beeps it started up! Its toying with me, restarted it again nothing so next try I pushed on the cpu thinking the mobo was bad it started up and woked for a cple restarts and quit... I tightened. The mobo screws down to the case and worked for awhile and then started acting up on restart. It will turn on once after it sits awhile unplugged with the bios battery out. I'm confused... bad bios or the mobo? I have unplugged all things that aren't needed for start up different hd with same effect. Only thing I haven't tried yet is the ram. I'm at work and will mess with it more later. Its a compaq presario or w.e amd 3800+ 2.4 ght proc two 512m... Read more

Answer:computer turns on but screen stays black

The PSU was probably bad, replacing it should have fixed it. There may be bad caps on the motherboard or something is grounding on the MOBO to the case and causing it to not boot. Take everything apart. Take Heat Sync off of processor and apply Thermal Paste. Take MOBO out of case and check to see if there are any burn marks, bad caps, or if there are any risers missing off the case keeping the MOBO from touching the case.

Whenever i play a game... or watch any type of video in full screen, my computer just turns off instantly... even if i'm just watching a youtube video in full screen..

I have no idea what is happening. I thought it might have been my graphics card but I took that out and used my onboard one but it's still happening.. my computer stays on if i keep the app to window sized instead of full screen, so I have no idea.

Any ideas people?

I've been trying to solve this problem for over a months, going on different forums, trying to contact a one on one guy to help me, pressing all types of buttons on my keyboard but nothing seems to be working!

I have an all in one Dell desktop that refuses to display not even the start up logo. This problem happened right after I updated my computer. The update said it was going to automatically restart but it didn't and just turned off so I decided to turn it on and thats when it all begun.

I'm not 100% sure if it was the update or could be another problem. I should mention that when i turn on my computer an amber or orange light is present as if it's sleeping rather than the normal white light.

I've tried to reinstall windows on a flash drive but I'm lost and don't know where to go past the everything is installed in the flash drive now I plug it in.

I've haven't had any success in finding a solution anywhere near close so I would really appricate the help!

Hi, having a few problems with my PC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A few weeks ago I came into the office to find my PC was making a strange "static" type of noise out of the speakers. The computer failed to power up, so ordered a new motherboard.

Fitted the motherboad today and put in a larger PSU. It powers up but nothing is displayed on my screen. Have tried a PCI Express graphics card and an old PCI graphics card but neither seem to output anything to the screen.

The PCI Express graphics card was working fine in the computer before it broke.

Another possible problem would be the CPU rather than the graphics card. I have tried 3 different processors (the one that was in the previous motherboard and two others) but using a different processor doesn't do anything.

Would it be right to assume that this must be a graphics card problem?

Could it be something else entirely?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is starting to frustrate me,
Thanks,
Michael

The next day I tried to turn on my computer but the screen doesnt work, its just pitch black. I have confirmed my moniter isnt the problem. Also when the computer is on, it makes ticking noises about 3-5 times when it turns on.

Hello all

Just got myself this (old) new computer, that I was going to use for a media center. But it randomly crashes, and i can't seem to figure out why. I formated it yesterday, so I doubt it would be a virus.

Sometimes it goes black, and picture returns within a few seconds, but other times it freezes up completely. When I restart it (with the power button) I cant get pasted the BIOS screen, but if I unplug the power supply, and hit the power button a few times and then plug in the power, it starts up like normal. (does that make it a RAM issue?)

Freezes have happened doing the following: Using XBMC (both in menus and while watching a video), while Internet Download Manager was running. While file transfer was running, and a few times while i wasnt at the computer.

Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
ATI Radeon HD 5670
Intel Core i3 CPU
6GB RAM
Phillips TV (Connected with HDMI)

Let me know if you need any other information.
Thanks

The problems you describe typically mean hardware problems. Please follow the http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html to provide us with your system logs and application logs. Those can help to find software conflicts, system errors, application errors, and sometimes point to hardware problems, as well. You do not have to be getting a blue screen crash for those to help us determine the cause of your problems.

Well it started awhile back when my PSU died so I got a new better one, but the computer would still turn on but stay at a blank screen. I tested my parts and came to the conclusion that it was either my mobo or CPU or both, so I went to the store and got a new Asus mobo and a sempron chip and installed them. The computer still has the same problem and I don't know why and what to do. Sorry for my english and any help is much appreciated.

Please use descriptive thread titles from now on.Thanks.

Answer:Computer turns on, but I get a blank screen after replacing bad psu.

So how did you test your parts?

Start with a minimal system - nothing but mobo, PSU, video, CPU and a single RAM module. Preferrably not in the computer case but on a nonconductive surface like a wooden desk.

If it doesn't work, replace the video (if external) and RAM.

Look over your habits. Did you take anti-static precautions when putting the thing together? (Something as basic as touching the computer case or the PSU before touching any other components.) Did you happen to work on the thing while it was plugged on and you dropped a screw on the motherboard?

I've checked to see that the hard drive is spinning and it is. the hdd access light flashes.i have not checked the ram yes since it's a laptop and difficult to get to. but i'm pretty sure that's not the issue. since from what i've listened to it sounds like it goes through post then sits the fro about thirty seconds probly asking if i want to start windows in safe mode normal. when i just sit there after about that much time has past the cpu fans start going again a little faster and i can here that it's accessing the hard drive but since i can' see anything it's hard to tell if that's true. i'm thinking that it's a bad graphics card but i'm not sure.

ok so the problem is that sometimes you can see the picture and sometimes you can't see it. i don't know what causes that but that's what happens. i got it working again. but after it went to sleep the screen never came back on. would that mean that there is something wrong with one of the windows files? i know one of them is the one used to bring the computer back from sleep mode. it's running windows vista. maybe this isn't a hardware issue?

More than likely a faulty graphics chip, the mobile Nvidia 8/9 series which you have are notorious for this especially in laptops with less than perfect cooling which allows them to get very hot.My advice would be firstly to clean the heatsink and fan thoroughly, secondly try a fresh install of Windows with the latest Nvidia drivers.  Trying to troubleshoot an installation that has had a lot of random tweaks and settings applied by a dubious program isn't going to go far.  If you still have the same problem with a fresh install, it's likely the graphics chip is toast.
