Preferred Solution: Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????

When i did the hard drive short and optimized dst chech in the component test to check whether hard disk is functioning well by using HP PC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTICS UEFI in my hp pavilion 15 -e009tu laptop it showed "warning " for both short and optimized checks. My hard disk was replaced fiew weeks before because of some issues. If warning is there... what to do... ?

Answer:Hard Drive Short and Optimized DST Check : WARNING

Hi Gameji.... Welcome aboard... I would suggest to be cautious and proceed as following:- Backup ur essential data immediately on to an external drive.Check for the manufacturer of the HardDisk using Control Panel>>Device ManagerGo online at the manufacturer's web site and look for their diagnostic tools; it must be something like SMART check utility.Altrnatively u may download following, run CrystalDiskInfo, see what is shows for smart data, this is a portable version that does not install anything on your PC, just runs from the folder you unzip it to.Crystal Disk Info.zipFind out the exact cause of the warning and proceed as deem appropriate...Please let me know if u feel stuck or in case some problem Hope this helps.... Best Regards... Moodi

Answer:Hard Drive Optimized failed DST Check

Jenna, welcome to the forum. I believe that the hard drive has failed.  Here is the Troubleshooting section for the hard drive.  I suggest following the guide on testing it.  If it shows that it has failed, your only option is to replace it.  Here is a guide to help you replace it.  You should assure that the new hard drive is the same size or larger than the existing one. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

When running an HP PC hardware diagnositics test, the rests come out as follows: System  -  Failed  -  QCW448-7G989F-MFPV7A-60SG03  -  10/29/2016The System extensive test shows that it failed as the Hard Drive Short DST Check failed. I am trying to get advice if this means that the hard drive needs to be replaced or if there are other solutions to try. Thank you

Product Name: hp15-r181nr My HP 15 laptop was running slow and I couldn't get past the Welcome Screen.  I ran a diagnostics test and received the Hard Drive Short DST Check : Failed message.  My laptop is no longer under warranty.  What are my options?

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check:Failed

The disk-drive either has failed, or it is showing that it is about to fail. Given that it is out-of-warranty, you need to purchase a replacement disk-drive, and then reinstall Windows. I looked at: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/7234951/model/7450458 There is no option to place an order with HP to get a "System Recovery Set".This is either one USB memory-stick, or several DVD disks, that you can use to reinstall Windows. However, if your computer was running Windows 10, you have a "digital entitlement" to reinstall Windows 10.On another computer, see: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10You can download Windows 10, and install it on the new disk-drive.If asked to enter a 25-character product-key, click "I do not have one", to activate your entitlement. Although Windows does not boot from the old disk-drive, it may still "barely-work" -- just long-enough to attach it as a "slave" disk-drive, and to copy all your files/bookmarks/music/pictures from it.

I have a HP Beats Special Edition 15 p030nr laptop which I have been experiencing issues with for the last two weeks. It began as the computer simply freezing up, not able to load anything once it booted up and I logged in, and this resulted in having to gard boot the computer to shut it down. I completed a system restore of the computer, and this appeared to resolve the issue for a few days. Now, the computer heats up really fast and the fan becomes really loud, then the computer completely restarts itself over and over. It fully loads to the account, I log in and within 2-5 minutes the computer restarts itself. There is nothing that it set to load upon start up of the PC. The only thing other than school documents from professors and Microsoft Office 360 directly from Microsoft have been downloaded. The computer has hardly anything on it as I only use it for school.I completed a system check scan which resulted in Failure ID: GU5B63-7NJ8K8-MFPWLJ-60XQ03 and Product ID: G6R14UA#ABA and the words Hard Drive Short DST Check failed, and Hard Drive 1. I would appreciate any help with determining what this error code means so that I can go ahead and attempt to fix my laptop. It would crap out the week before exams start...thankfully I do have a back up of all important files from the computer.

An issue I had resolved a few months ago has begun occuring again, wherein the laptop has difficulty loading things when started up and soon after crashes and has to be restarted. I assume this means the hard drive has failed again and so I have no doubts about how to resolve this, but I am posting this query to ask: Why? Why has a laptop I have had for not even a year at this point already had the same problem occur twice, even with replacing the part that broke the first time? I'm willing to assume it's something to do with excessive use as I will admit it is switched for a good part of most days, often for several hours as I play games on Steam on it. I do not currently plan to have the hard drive replaced again as this is clearly an issue that is going to keep occuring the way things are and so I may as well get a PC that won't break every time a gust of wind hits it. Any information on why this is occuring and how it could potentially be prevented in the future is appreciated , particularly if it provides a solution that doesn't involve paying an extortionate amount of money.

Hi, Sadly to say, the HDD on your machine failed. The following link shows its specs:          http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03663774 You can replace larger (capatity) and faster HDD. Any standard 2.5" SATA HDD on the market today can do the job. You need Recovery media to rebuild your machine. Did you create one ? Otherwise, please try:              http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

So my laptop HP 14-ac136tu has been performing very slow for the last few months and so I decided to reset it but failed. When I turned it on again, it shows the hp logo then shows a black screen without cursor. I tried pressing the F2 before the logo starts and it directed me to a diagnostoc. When I checked, the Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed.

Now, the thing is I don't have a recovery disc and when I looked it up on hp they don't have any available for my laptop model. When I also tried to have the blue screen thing which has like recover from past something, it wasn't successful since a file wasn't found and so I got stuck with having a black screen.

Can you help me please?

UBUNTU Stand Alone DVD

Note the latest version of UBUNTU needs a DVD to use and boot from

if you only have CDs then you can use an older version, version 10 or 11 from this archive list
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/

It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least test the Hardware and also see if you can see the Harddrive and possibly get any of your data off.

For almost all PCs. The following ISO 32Bit image will work on most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.

Hard Drive short Dst check: failed.Failure ID = UAJL6W-77F8J8-XD7V6J-60WH03Warranty has expired. How can I fix this? I think this is the reason my laptop keeps freezing and coming up with "not responding" message.

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check failure

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails with 24 alphanumberic characters "UAJL6W-77F8J8-XD7V6J-60WH03" that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recov... tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally. I would be watching a video, click to a different tab, stuff like that, and everything would become unresponsive and freeze (didn't just happen to my browser, would happen even with my search bar). Restarting and giving it a moment would fix this problem, but it got to the point it happened 20 or 30 minutes after start up. I decided to do a reset, chose to not save my files (didn't do a 100% wipe though) because there's nothing critically important, and I thought it could be a virus. Did the wipe, got an error a good bit in that the wipe couldn't be done (I do not remember the exact wording). Tried again, same thing. It directed me to some options, chose the launch windows 10 normally one, just to see if I was still having problems. Did this, and what would happen is computer would boot up, HP logo, cycle back to computer boot up, HP logo, it was in a loop. Waited a good hour and a half to two hours, would not stop. Turned computer off manually and on a few times, same problem. Turned computer off then on, f2, system quick test, and I got the error in the title FAILURE ID: QBS97X-82L863-XD7WMA-60WD03PRODUCT ID: P1A95UA#ABA

What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

My laptop had been working completely fine until today where I had come home and the start up was taking ages. It was stuck on the HP logo for a while and then was followed by a message stating that the PC has a problem and it was "Preparing Automatic Repair".The screen is now blank and does not do anything. I restarted and the same issue occurred. My laptop is OUT OF WARRANTY - bought in 2014 and had no issues with the laptop up until now. The support team on Twitter ran through tests with me on this issue and advised that the Hard Drive needs to be replaced due to the Hard Drive Short DAT Check Failure - just now wondering whether any of the data can be recovered and how to go about it? Any help will be appreciated!!!

Answer:HARD DRIVE SHORT DST CHECK FAILED

Probably. You have to stop trying to boot the laptop and physically remove the hard drive.  Here's the Service Manual: Manual See p. 43 and 49 for "how to". This is not real easy to do. Post back if you need more help and we can likely find a video.  It will be very similar to this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04324972 Once you get the hard drive out you need a usb to SATA adapter like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ugreen-Converter-Adapter-Cable-Power/dp/B00MYU0E0K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=148...  Hook this to the hard drive and then attach the usb to another computer and it is likely possible to retrieve data. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Over the weekend, notebook was running slow.  Yesterday it would not boot.  The HP logo screen appeared a couple of minutes as usual, but the black screen with the circle never went away.  I ran a quick scan and the Hard Drive Short DST Check failed.  What is this in layman's terms and is there anything I can do?  TIA Have not made any installations or updates; however, after doing a hard reset and running the quick scan, restored BIOS.

Hi I been using my laptop as usual today and all of a sudden a notification popped up saying hard drive failure imminent. I restarted the laptop, pressed f2 and ran a system test. Everything in the test passes expect from the Hard drive short dst check, which failed.Failure ID: 0SG2J1-7K289U-XD7WLJ-60VW03I'm not sure why this has occurred. I regular run virus scans and defrag the hard drive. The hard drive is 1TB and around 100GB is used. The laptop is only 2 years old and ran out of warranty around April/May (typical). I don't have any recovery disc or back ups, is the laptop now unusable? I try to boot up but the laptop either freezes on login or on desktop. I have all my uni work, including my dissertation report on there, please help.ThanksDale

Hi, I'm new to the forums so I hope this is the right place to post this But anyways, I basically dropped my HP 15 Notebook (15-f305dx) and now it won't boot. When I turn it on, it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then goes to a blank, black screen, and after a long while, a blue screen that has an 'Unmountable Boot Volume' error . Sometimes it starts and says 'Preparing Automatc Repair' but only for a few seconds again, then it goes back to the black screen and the same error. I saw some tutorials but it involved me getting a bootable CD or USB drive and I tried that and it still won't work. It just makes the loading screen stay on a little longer then goes back to the error. So I ran a System Quick Check and it failed the Hard Drive Short DST check. I don't know what any of this means. do I need a new laptop?

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail?

It appears the impact of dropping your computer damaged the hard drive. The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. You will need to replace the hard drive with a like unit and use your HP Recovery Media to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, you will have to purchase this media from HP. Please see USB - Windows 10 64b Recovery Kit to order the media or contact HP Customer Support to purchase the medai, If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

Answer:hard drive short DST check failed

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.  See p. 49 of the Manual: Manual If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hi, My laptop is stalling at the HP welcome screen with the spinning circle. I ran a diagnostic System Quick test (through repeatedly pressing F2 when the laptop was turning on) after doing the other standard resetting solutions and got the following results: Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed Failure ID: 98QD7K-6G68G8-MFPX0K-60QE03Product ID: C6M11EA#ABU Can you advise what I should do next?

Answer:Notebook Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

MickSull68 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that error message means that your hard drive has failed. It will need to be replaced.Once you have the replacement drive, you will need to use something known as HP Recovery Media to restore your PC to working condition. This is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks. You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded. (more on this below)While you are waiting for the HP media to arrive, you should work at retrieving any files and folders you want to save from this drive, as follows:1) Remove the hard drive from the PC2) Purchase a USB-to-Hard Driver adapter kit3) Download and install this utility on a working PC: http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_...4) Connect the old drive to the working PC5) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the old drive. If that tools does not find what you need, an alternative is Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuvaAnd, if that does not work well, the best tool out there is this one, but only the trial version is free: http://www.file-recovery.com/-------- Ordering Recovery Media ------------You can look online for Recovery Media starting w... It is just out of warranty- Of Course.

First off I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC with Windows 8 and I used Internet Explorer 10.

Processor Name : AMD E-300APU with Radeon ™ HD Graphics.

A few days ago, my computer started getting slower & slower, not responding, freezing up and even going to a blue screen before coming back to the page I was at.

So I put it in Safe Mode with Networking and ran Malwarebytes full scan - nothing.

Then I hit F2 at reboot and ran some of the tests on there - Battery was Okay, memory was okay, but this one failed :

Hard Drive Short DST Check - Software Error

Failure ID : RSG080-6P579C-MFGJXG-60VS03
Product ID : D1E80UA#ABA

Does this mean I need to update with windows update, that there isn't enough memory or does it mean my Hard Drive needs to be replaced? This laptop is only 1-1 1/2 years old....

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed - Software Error?!

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

I've had this computer for about 2 months. One night I was casually using my laptop, when google chrome started to freeze up. Then, the whole os froze. I restarted the laptop holding the power button. I turned my laptop back on. Every time I would let it restart, it would black screen for a minute. Then text would pop up, saying "preparing automatic repair" then the screen would go black for about 5 minutes. Then text would pop up saying "checking computer diagnostics". It would be stuck on this screen forever. I then decided to do a system extensive test. After a minute into the test, it reported that my "HARD DRIVE SHORT DST CHECK : FAILED" The failure id number was "RGC028-88S8B1-GXGK7F-60WG03" what do I do after this?

Recently I fired up my laptop and left it downloading an update for Civ 6 via Steam whilst I took a nap. When I woke up I was confronted with a black screen with no curosr. I tried a few fixes posted online but following the advice from the I.T Crowd I tried turning it off and back on again. When I turned my laptop back on I recieved a blue "Unmountable Boot Volume" error screen and my laptop went into automatic repair. I had a screen with the HP logo and "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then it went to a black screen with no cursor. I left it on the black screen overnight but when I checked it the next morning it was still on the black screen. I turned the computer off. My next step was to create Windows 10 USB recovery disk using Rufus. I then turned on my laptop again, deactivated Secureboot and enabled legacy booting. When I saved and exited my laptop didn't reset so I reset it manually using the power button. When it came back on I selected the USB drive via Boot Options and then chose Windows 10 64 bit. It recieved a screen saying loading files. It then wen to a screen with the HP logo and the spinning loading thing HP has. The next screen was a black screen with no cursor. I left it for an hour just in case but nothing changed so I reset it again via the power button and tried loading all three of the safe modes to see if they worked but each time I recieved the HP loading screen then a black screen with no cursor. Finally I did a hardware check and ... Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

Answer:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

Answer:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If... tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally. Hi, As stated, I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased 1 year ago. Just 2 days ago, my warranty has ended. At the same point in time, I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend. When I got it back, it works just fine, but it had that malware in it that I want to remove. So, I fired up system restore and go on restoring. It finished doing so until  it restarts. When it restarts, I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours, to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media. All works well until I got stuck in the installation. I got stuck at 10% (When I searched on the internet why, the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on. I am able to open it up and take it off for a moment. But because I need to go to work, I decided against it. I turned the laptop off and set off. When I got back, I can't even let it proceed to the installation, saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot. Did that same thing several times and nothing happened. Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check. It passed the SMART test, but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST. It produced the error code: MFUC7T-7RG98K-CD7WMG-64DK03 Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall? Or is the HDD really is ruined? Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replac... Hello,

I found a hard drive somewhere is my house, a Seagate barracuda 7200 RPM, 250 GB and I wanted to know if there is a way to check if it's working , I don't even know what's in it, so I wanted to know if I can do something with it,assuming it does work, for example combine it with my current hard drive for some extra storage, or maybe install my windows 7 on it if the hard drive I'm using now fails in future (like a backup or something-is it possible?)

Thanks all!

Answer:How to check a hard drive?

mibaup,
I'll assume that the drive is a sata drive and not IDE please confirm. If it's a sata drive then all you need is a free power connector off your PSU and a spare sata cable. With these two cables connected to the drive and the other end if the sata connected to a free sata port on the mobo then all you will need to do is boot up the system as normal and then locate the newly added drive and have a look around. If it doesn't show up you may need to have a look in disk manager but lets take this one step at a time. Please report back when you install and boot up.

I suspect my laptop's hard drive is begining to expire. I have gone through Control Panel/ System/device manager/hardware, and they report that it is working properly, and there are no conflicts. When using several programmes (not all at once) the 'busy light' on the laptop is continuously steady, the programme seems to hang, and then I get the dialog box 'not responding'.Running WinXp+SP3, with Windows firewall enabled and AVG 8.5. Computer/ software are up to date, and have just done scan with Spybot S & D, Malware/ CC/and AVG. All negative and computer clean. Any thing else I can try. Thanks, Aitch

Hi, I've been having some probs for a while now with my PC (I've got two and I'm on the other one now).
It's HP Pavilion tower running Vista.
Done all the normal things, registry clean, diminished start up progs etc etc, malware/spyware checks, so figured it's more than likely a hardware prob, so have started checking things with diagnosic tools / progs. Memory checks out ok.
So have commenced CHK DSK check on the hard drive, it's got up to 4 of 5 checks, has a couple of lines of info after that, (replaced bad clusters in a document) but it's now frozen (seemingly) it's been about 4 hours now.

My question is, is it still running? Or has it reached a point where it's frozen itself out? There's no light on the PC flashing to indicate it's still running, neither is the fan on. It doesn't feel overly hot.
I can't do anything with it unless I do a force restart. Screen is showing the testing text, no screen saver working, no mouse arrow. No flashing next figure icon like when you are using 'rin'.
Cheers,
Mark

Answer:Hard drive check using CHK DSK

I mean when using 'run', sorry someone interrupted me.

I also mean that it's 'achieved' four out of the five scheduled checks so far. At least that's what the message displays.

Hi

Over the last 48 hours I've noticed that my laptop has become unbearably slow,

I've done numerous Malware and Virus scans all come back clean as a whistle (However the scan have taken some time compared to normal)

I have noticed that my programs seem to be slowing when the computer is accessing the HDD, I've had task manager running and the cpu and memory are both reasonable running at about 50-60% max.

I've run Seatools which passed all the test until I got to the long generic which it FAILED.

My question is does anyone know any software that I can run to confirm it is my HDD failing and not the HDD controller (which is inbuilt into MB) before I spend money on new HDD etc

My Laptop is:
Intel Core i3 - 380M
Windows 7 Home Premium
4GB DDR3 Ram
320GB HDD ( Western Digital )

Any help greatly appreciated
Kind Regards

Question: Hard Drive Check

Hey guys here a question for ya, Is there any way to diagnose a hard drive remotely to know if it going bad or has any bad sectors, cause the check disk doesn't really do much, In case some are familiar with Linux and what not . There Disk utilities can show you if the hard drive is going bad or has a bad sector . Be awesome if there way :)

Answer:Hard Drive Check

Windows Check Disk (Error Checker) only checks for errors in the Windows file system and (optionally) checks for bad sectors.

To check the drive's physical health you need to use the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software. The links are here: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

My hp envy smarttouch desktop is not well.  Said storage failure,  My dtr didnt shut it down properly.  Next day running super slow.  Did f2, f12 to troubleshoot and repair itself and it said it couldnt.  All tests came out fine except (hard drive short dst check failed).  Optimized dst check failed.  These are error numbers Q0AB3F-0008G3-9XMNWK-6LW503.  Im under the impression i need a new hard drive, and if so how much would it cost?  I only paid $275 for computer.

Answer:short dst check failed

@donnakerman, welcome to the forum. The error messages that you are receiving mean that your hard drive has failed.  You should replace it with one the same size or larger to assure that the Recovery media works properly.  It will cost you approximately $75. For future reference, when requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Recently, my system has been slowing down dramatically. Where I've noticed it mostly is when trying to add or delete a favorite. This used to happen almost instantly. Now sometimes it can take a minute or so. I'm now noticing that this isn't the only place where things hang up. If I reboot, things go back to normal but eventually it ends up getting extremely slow again. I've had the PC for 4 years and this has never been a problem before. I even have MaxMem but this doesn't help. The only changes I've made lately have been getting the latest AdAware and Spybot and Cookie Wall. Would any of these programs cause these slow ups?

Anyway, someone else mentioned that there my be a Spyware problem using resources. SB, AdAware and Norton aren't finding anything so I didn't suspect any spyware but this same person said that there are problems that these programs don't find so please look at my log and tell me if you see anything suspicious. Also, maybe you know of another reason for this slow up.

Answer:HDD short dst check Error.

A DST or S.M.A.R.T. error nearly always indicates an impending hard drive failure. The only exception is when the error is related to excessive hard drive temps which can sometimes be corrrected by improving ventilation. You should back up any important data immediatley and if excessive temps aren't indicated replace your hard drive. More information:S.M.A.R.T.  If you found my answer helpful please say thanks by clicking on the Thumb's Up icon.If my answer solved your problem please mark it as the Accepted Solution. How can I check if my files are intact on my hard drive if the operating system (windows xp) is not working?

Answer:check if files are on hard drive

If the operating system is toast your files are still intact. But the easiest way to check/retrieve them would be to plug the hard drive up to another computer (slaving it) and getting them manually. But I can just about guarantee your files are still there. Nothing short of the hard drive having a physical issue then your files might be corrupt.

You can run Microsofts Chkdsk utility on any drive which spins and whose controller and interface function, but if you want a detailed report then the very best software is probably Spinrite (many drives are cheaper to replace than a Spinrite licence though!)

Is there a good program to check if my hard drive is failing? I do use HD tune at times. Right now
I have a hard drive that at times has a transfer rate of under 5 MB/sec but some scans are fine
at over 50 MB/sec.
But at times I have to try to start my computer a fews times before it starts and I have checked
for malware it is fine

Hard Disk Sentinal / Crystal Disk Info is a good program for monitoring Hard Disk health.
And before that don't forget Defragmenting your HDD atleast once in 3 months for better performance. Recommended program for this is

Sometimes randomly my HDD starts doing crackling noises alot and especially when i do something. This may last for like 5-20mins. Is there any program to check what program or other is using up all the bandwidth going/coming through to my HDD?

Answer:Program to check what is using my hard drive much?

You have one way already in your pc. Go into 'Task manager', then 'performance' tab, then 'resource monitor'. The 'Overview' tab tells you what is happening. It is very useful to show if you have enough RAM installed for the programs you are running.
*One idea though, do you have a defragmentation program installed, which is set to run in the background or 'smart/auto' mode ?

**If you want to try a more detailed program try; http://systemexplorer.net/download.php
Click on 'Download' tab.
(The link for the download is near the bottom of the site, just above the blue advert. 'Download installer version' is the one.)
Run it 'as administrator'. This program highlights the programs which have just been active with a coloured background, which may help you .
