System info at the Lock/Login screen: e.g. IP, HostName...

Question: System info at the Lock/Login screen: e.g. IP, HostName...

Hi there!

I've got a Windows domain: Win2k12 R2 AD server + 200+ Windows 10 PRO workstations.

There is a way to add custom message on the login screen.

So I was wondering is there any way to display system info at the Lock Screen or at Login screen?

Registry, Group policy, Control panel and additional settings? Or even BgInfo For Lockscreen edition?))))

It's very useful to see Hostname and its IP even before logging in.

Did somebody tried to do this?

Preferred Solution: System info at the Lock/Login screen: e.g. IP, HostName...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

BgInfo does not and cannot run on the login screen. Due to the security implications there are strict requirements for software that can run do this. Malicious software running here could potentially steal user login credentials and that would be a huge security problem.

The only software I have heard of that does this is mentioned in this thread:
http://www.eightforums.com/software-...n-program.html

I know nothing of this software other than what is in the thread but it appears to be a part of a larger software package and likely expensive.

I have an odd issue with the Bing Lock screen info on my phone (Lumia 925, running WP 8.1). It used to be that if I wanted to know anything about the bing image of the day, I could go into Settings>Lockscreen and right under the Bing setting could read some fine print indicating what the photo is and where it was taken. I frequently check this, as I'm very impressed by many of the images, and generally am interested in knowing where they come from. Lately however, I would say for about the last week, when I check the information now, it's all in Chinese, and I cannot understand what it's saying about the Bing image of the day. ALL the other settings on my phone (regional, language, etc.) are in English, so I have no idea why I'm getting this information in Chinese, other than the fact that I currently am living and working in China (but have been for the past 5 years, and this issue just presented itself very recently).

I typically like the lock screens that Windows 10 shows very much.

Already several times I was wondering how to get more background info on the picture shown, specifically:
where was that picture taken? Or like today: what village does it show? It's beautiful and I'ld love to travel there to see more of this beautiful town and its area!

Any pointers or hints?

Hello,

I don't understand this, so apparently there are to ways to view info from certain apps on the Lock Screen but there are bugs that don't make it work:

1. A Detailed status; selecting the Mail app as for the detailed status doesn't show anything at all. All other apps shown in a detailed status work fine. When viewing the Lockscreen I can see that the Internet connection status in the right below corner has a circle in front of it.

2. A Quick status: NONE of my apps show any info (Mail, Weather, Calendar, messages) when I select them to show a quick status on my Lockscreen.

The Lockscreen I'm checking out is the one you get when pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then choosing the "Lock" option.

What's the problem here and how can I solve this?

So I disabled the lock screen as it's just another unnecessary click to login, but what I want to be able to do is customise the background image of the login/ctrl+alt+del screen. I know you can change the "accent" colour but I don't want to use a solid colour. How do I go about this?

How can I change the windows 8.1 login screen (that comes with a password) and replace it with any image? I'm not talking about the LOCK screen. I searched a lot , some websites told me to edit the group policy and add a custom image here

C:\Windows\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds
But this method did not work. What should I do? I don't need any third party paid software. I require a free method.

My apology if this question had been asked before.

I login as John (account type = Administrator) on my Win7 Home Premium. My computer System Name is HomePC.

When I launched the "System Information" via msinfo32.exe, why does it show the "User Name" as HOMEPC\user instead of HOMEPC\John?

Appreciate if somebody can shed some light. Thanks

Hello all,
(Disclaimer, I am a complete windows 7 noob, I've been a mac user my whole life but just switched to windows)
Whenever I log into Windows 7 the computer is sending me directly to the "computer locked" login screen instantly, as soon as I enter my password it sends me right back to the lock screen again. This repeats infinitely. I have looked for similar problems on the internet and can not seem to find anyone else that seems to be suffering from this problem.
It works fine in safe mode though. I ran a virus scan with Windows Defender and it couldn't find anything. I tried doing a system repair from the f8 boot prompt, that didn't work. I've exhausted all my efforts and I still cant seem to find a way to fix this. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm in dire need of some halp from someone who knows what they are doing. Because I sure as hell don't. If you need any more detailed info about my system i'll be happy to provide it.

Answer:Lock screen instantly on login!

What was Microsoft thinking when they not only made this login (not the lock) background image impossible for a user, using normal means, to change, but also stuck the user with the most hideous looking stock images (those cartoonish images of Seattle, etc)? I finally found different sites that gave elaborate instructions for changing the login background, which I did, but it was quite a messy process.

Greetings -

Ever since the latest update to Windows 10 (10.0,16299) my Login screen screenshot and Lock screen screenshot are different. Personalize>Lock Screen shows the desired screenshot as it always has. "Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen" is set to On as it's always been. Nothing has changed there. Not sure if this is related, but the background screen color has changed from blue to gray when I Restart or Shutdown.

I've looked for a Pictures folder that might contain the stock screenshots without success. I've even reinstalled Windows 10 to try to fix this. I hate to admit it, but I'm stumped. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

When I log into Window 8.1 the num lock is always off. Same thing continues in Win 8.1 after I upgraded to Win 8.

When the boot is complete (HP m7-j010DX) the num lock is still off.  This is a higher end HP laptop and I am also blown away they pinched pennys to remove the on/off light on the num lock making the confusion worse.

This is driving me crazy as every PC I have used in the last 20 years has always started with the num lock on   and had an "On" light.  I continue to get stuck at boot up or can't figure out when my passwords won't work after login. It is a huge time waster.

Answer:Windows 8.1, Num Lock Off at Login Screen

Just a qwerk of 8. You can change that behavior in the Registry, so that it is on all the time. Also check the bios settings. Some machines allow you to set the NumLock to 'On' state in there.

I really don't know how to explain the technical "name" for where the customer name is used, I believe it is the "hostname" of the IP address - so I appologize for the title.

Here is an example of \wWhat they are doing, without telling customers. Let's say the customer has a static IP address of 267.123.234.221 The hostname from a simple internet search shows the following: Lfe-static-JoeEPublic.dmts.ISPname.net (replace the part in red with the customers name).

I found this out while administering a website and when I was looking at a post I had made it showed my actual name under the "user details" aspect of the software where it had information about the user such as IP and hostname as well.

I was totally appauled when I saw this and didn't know what to think so I dug in and looked a little closer. I did a search for IP hostnames on a seperate ISP 3000 miles away and it gave the same results, showing my name in the publicly available hostname! I was outraged because I had no idea that this was being done. It is like going to sites with a name badge on. Luckily I don't go to sites that I would have been embarassed about but I'm sure there are some that might.

This is SUPER IMPORTANT for the customer to know because they could be posting on sites about personal medical conditions or whatever. Whether or not it is legal or ethical for the ISP to do this isn't really as important as whether or not they tell the... Read more

I frequently am logging in and out of my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have a good, secure password that I use and because I'm human, sometimes I mistype it. The issue is that on these occasions, I am locked out for a good 30 seconds from attempting to
login, even for the second time.

I can understand the time delay if it were say, my 5th or 6th attempt, but for one attempt this is entirely too long. How do I go about significantly reducing this, or ideally removing it?

Thank you very much!

Hello,

Is there a way to shutdown using keyboard only, from the initial login screen? It's the same screen as the windows lock screen.

I have tried all the standard keys Alt-F4, Esc, Ctrl-Shift-Esc, Ctrl-Break, etc. but to no avail.

I know that there is a button at the bottom right that you can click to shutdown, but I can't see it to click on it (long story: I have a two monitor setup, and the login screen upon boot will show up on my primary monitor. There's something wrong with primary monitor so now when the computer boots, it sometimes displays on my primary monitor and sometimes it doesn't. During the times when it doesn't, I'll need to shut down and restart, but at the login screen, my primary monitor is not showing so I cannot see the shutdown button to click on it)

Thanks.

Hi

I have installed Win 10 as an upgrade on a seperate partition to my Win 8.1. Win 10 is x64 version and Win 8.1 is 32 bit. As far as I can tell this puzzle started when I upgraded the x64 partition to Win 10. Now when my lock screen appears and I click the mouse for the password box there is a back arrow next to my user name. Pressing this gives me a black screen, then my user name reappears without the back arrow and I login. I am using the same MS account for Win 8.1 and Win 10 TP. This doesnt happen on Win 10 lock screen/password screen. Is there anyway I can get rid of this arrow, just a niggle I know but would be nice.

I had to do an Hp reset of my Notebook PC because of irrational behaviour. Everything was extremely slow and pages were jumping to other pages. After the Reset I now get an error message on my lock screen login page that says "This administrator account has been disabled please refer to administrator. I am the only administrator or User period on my PC. I can then click ok and login to my same regular administrator account. I cannot however change my lock screen photo any longer. Before the Reset I had a photo there. When doing the Reset I saved all my personal files and data.

I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 due to this problem, and everything was running smoothly up until today (approximately 4 days after I reinstalled the OS). This morning, I attempted to boot up my computer as usual, and it simply hardlocked as soon as the Welcome screen came up.

This hardlock only recently started happening with my PC when I hooked up a fourth monitor to my GPU, to produce a 3x1 monitor arrangement, plus my Cintiq tablet. (Currently, the Cintiq is in the shop for repairs.) When that configuration was plugged in, the computer started hardlocking. After that, I reinstalled Windows 7 over the weekend, and it was all working fine. Up until now.

There have been no BSOD's at all - even with the hard locks, and I attempted to use the driver verifier to see what was causing it, as this is my greatest suspicion. I rarely find that my computer builds have problems, though I don't have the tools to test my RAM yet (would like some help in this regard).

This is my workstation that I use for my art. I would like to resolve this ASAP before the week is over. Please help! ; 3

Answer:Hard Lock @ Welcome/Login Screen during Boot-Up, unable to resolve

Have you tried the System Repair Disc you can make in Win7's Control Panel, Backup and Restore? It has to be for either 32-bit or 64-bit but your System Specs do show you have the 64-bit version of Windows. It doesn't necessarily have to be made from a specific computer.

Answer:Satellite A100-153 screen lock problem and Windows login?

Hi

According to these Toshiba BIOS FAQ document the BIOS update can be done with 2 different procedures:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=B IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

It's possible that you have useed the wrong BIOS update procedure or wrong BIOS.
Well, it's not easy to say why the notebook login freezes. The fact is that the Satellite A100 is a very new notebook and it was delivered with all Microsoft service packs (SP1+Sp2). I don't know if you have installed the unit manually or not but you should use the Toshiba recovery CD.

I would recommend recovering the notebook with the Toshiba recovery CD and then you check if the login problem persists.

Hi,
I'm facing blue screen recently on my Dell XPS 9550 laptop. I've opened ticket to Dell support and their offer was "reinstall Windows 10 OS again and tell us the result" which is unacceptable for me.
When I open the computer the screen is disappearing suddenly and comes back again with fluctuation. Especially It was occurring all the times when I lock my Windows-10 screen then try to login again.
I am attaching the screen captures.
1) Stop Code: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE || igdkm64.sys
2) Stop Code: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
After all; I found the soultion as below.
Closed this application --> C:\Program Files\Portrait Displays\Dell PremierColor\PremierColor.exe  and removed from startup everything worked fine and had not any blue screen issue.
Dear Dell and community, at least, Dell me what does PremierColor.exe do? And why we're facing this issue while PremierColor is open?

Hi, I'm new here. I created this account for help because my mother's password seems changed and she couldn't login, the keyboard wasn't sticky so she didn't mistype, caps lock wasn't on. I typed it my self and it didn't work, restarted the computer and it didn't work neither. I then go to thinking it was hacked and the password was simply changed. I go looking around for password changing boots for my flashdrive. I burned PASSCAPE on to my 16gig 2-1 flashdrive. Tried booting on all settings, booted normally, didn't work. So, I ignored it for a while and kept clicking "Reset password" button, It showed up as "Passcape" but claimed the usb slot was empy, wasn't; the slot is "F". I gave up hope on it, so I found this youtube video to reset it the manual labor way-here's the link to it: " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLtJ-iDdWC0 " So, continuing on..

I was simply following the video's instructions, so at step one at duration "2:02" I have to cause a error, I just keep shutting-down the pc while it's booting, because windows will assume it's an error after 2 - 3 times of doing so. NEWS FLASH: I just learned something new about the password problem, my mother never told me exactly what the problem is but I've been typing it wrong the entire time, typed it in and this in quotes is my discovery:

" The User Profile Service service failed the logon.
User profile cannot be loaded. "

She never told me exactly what was the problem everyone, all she said is "Did you change the password" (waking me up at 8AM) then "The password is changed and I can't get on!" What is this problem we are experiencing-i've never seen this before.

I was infected by the Antivirus soft (expletive). Here is my original description. Still can't log into windows normally. My keyboard and mouse stop responding at the login screen and the cursor freezes. Fortunately they still work in safe mode. Hello....brand new to this, so sorry if this is posted incorrectly. Problem: tried to download harddrive cloning program to fix my laptop that was indicating an eminent hd failure. Got infected with Antivirus Soft. Realized it immediately. Downloaded PC Tools Internet Security and paid for it, according to instructions I found online with another computer. Those instructions said run scan before rebooting computer, but the program said the computer needed to be restarted to work. Against my better judgement, I restarted the computer. When windows login screen came up, both the keyboard and mouse froze before I could enter my password. Would not move or allow any data entry....just hung up. Searched for possible ways to fix this and everything indicated to boot into safe mode, which I did and fortunately both keyboard and mouse work in safe mode. Ran system scan with pc tools and it found some of the antivirus soft problems along with whatever else it found. Further researched these problems and came across malwarebytes anti-malware and downloaded it. Ran that a few times and it found some of the same stuff. Came across this website and youtube solutions describing the combofix, so I ran that too. The computer still works in s... Read more

Hi ,
I am running windows 7 professional 64 bit on a quadcore xeon machine.
My company IT policy requires that we change our account passwords every 2 months. After the last password change , my computer is locking me out of the network by trying to login with an invalid password stored somewhere in the credential manager.
I have tried clearing the credential manager many times , no use. we checked all my machines, virtual machines, network drives, printers, none of them seem to solve the problem.
Our IT specialist has checked our machines multiple times and found nothing.
so far we know of two machines with the same configuration causing this problem. The only way to avoid being locked out is to turn off my machine at night.  The login attempts occur at 5:00 am in the morning every day .

Answer:Security-kerberos Event ID 14 . credential manager causes system to login to network with invalid password and lock the account.

Microsoft Support found the problem for us.  Our domain accounts were locking when a Windows 7 computer was started.  The Windows 7 computer had a hidden old password from that domain account.
There are passwords that can be stored in the SYSTEM context that can't be seen in the normal Credential Manager view.
Download PsExec.exe from

From a command prompt run:    psexec -i -s -d cmd.exe
From the new DOS window run:  rundll32 keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr
Remove any items that appear in the list of Stored User Names and Passwords.  Restart the computer.

Hi everyone. I'm having trouble with my Acer laptop. This is what happened. I recieved an automatic update for IE9. I tryed it out, I did not like the new settings. So, I tryed to delete it, it said that I do not have permission to do that. So I did a System Restore to go back to IE8 and it looked like it was doing it's thing. Then it went into the Blue Error Screen. I turned my laptop off and then back on after a minute or so. Everything looked ok, all the intros still come on but "Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit (Full Version) Login Screen or Welcome Screen" does not load at all. Just stays on a blank black screen with the mouse arrow. I tried using the F8 options on the laptop but they have not done anything so far. SafeMode does not work and apparently there are no Restore Points anymore. No Backups either. Command Prompt still works. I did a scan and it said there is nothing wrong but there is. Should I get the full version of Windows Vista Install Disk and use the Repair option from there? You know where the disk has options like Install, Uninstall, Repair? I'm not talking about a Recovery Disk with the same F8 options as my laptop.

Answer:No Windows Vista Login Screen after System Restore goes into Blue Error Screen.

Over the last couple of months I have seen in Windows 10 14393.xxx the User Lock Screen become the Default Lock Screen. I have not found any way to restore the Default Lock Screen to its default (sea cave) image. I have checked in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData\S-1-5-18\ReadOnly\LockScreen_Z and the sea cave image is the only one there. I have tried sfc /scannow and DISM restorehealth and neither have worked. Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so have you found a way to restore the Default Lock Screen to its default? It may a registry entry that has become corrupt or that is set incorrectly. I simply do not know what causes this to happen or how to fix it once it does.

Hi

Please forgive my limited IT knowledge and skills.

2 days ago, my computer crashes when load/Play an online game (I have played this online game for 4 years on this very machine). It firest seems to jam up, followed by pixels smearing on screen and few seconds later my screen goes black and to an off position although I can still here my hard drive and fan ticking.

I dont think the issue is with my screen, i think its either a Motherboard or Graphics Card overload or burn out.

I have tried loads of things so far i.e. re-update drivers, run virus checkers but nothing helps, so i am sure its a hardware issue.

Hey guys,
I have a problem whether this is a driver problem since I have an issue regarding a boot issue with a 1-2 second flash of windows loading (the spining circle one) with the background colour of your selected accent before it reaches the lock screen and also after the login process, it would flash black and the same thing occurs before it reaches the desktop. Now, i know it may seem off topic but I have been updating my drivers and also, I had an issue when i increase the scaling through windows 10 to 125% which is the recommended that some information popup like norton or the graphics device adapter (that shows what ram your integrated graphics are) are blurry and hard to see. I kept it on the lowest one atm and it seems to do the trick. Is it a graphics problem of my laptop since I have been trying to update it or just Windows 10 in general issue?
Thanks guys.

My son has a Toshiba Satelite P205 that he just upgraded from Windows XP Home Premium to Windows 7 32-bit. After the upgrade completed the computer booted fine. The within 20 minutes he got the BSOD and the system rebooted. Now he can't get Windows to fully start. We've tried all of the options from F8 with no success. We have the Toshiba System Recovery Disk but it won't launch. (The Boot sequence has been changed to boot from CD/DVD and then the Hard Drive.)

The Memory Diagnostic from the Windows 7 disk ran fine with no errors.

I'm thinking I might need to re-format/wipe the drive to start fresh but don't know where to obtain a boot CD(no floppy drive on this laptop). Does anyone recommend a software that I can purchase to clear everything without destroying the CD/DVD accessibility so I can then use the System Recovery Disk to put it back to the original factory Settings?

Answer:System goes to black screen before login/welcome screen after Win 7 32-bit upgrade

Toshiba, usually pressing F12 when the Toshiba Logo appears will get you to the Boot device menu. If not then,
Go here https://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/pubLogin.jsp Choose the Download Tab, No Login required, That is for the Forums.

Download the user manual and see how to get to the boot from CD/DVD drive.

The Drivers tab will show the Toshiba drivers. They are needed for Windows 7, If no drivers for WIn7, Then don't, as getting all that are needed will be a royal pain.

I've even seen certain model of Toshiba that have a XP Bios and a different bios for Vista.

Good Luck

Hi,

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. I made some googling and found other fix it with Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication set to 0, but I dont have it in registry. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Does anyone know how to put a company logo in the system info screen so it dont say like "dell" but we can put our own in?
thanks

Answer:How to put company logo in the system info screen?

Create a bitmap image of your logo. This is size critical, too small and it'll look silly too big and it will cause problems with layout of the general display Tab.

I use 154 pixels wide by 100 pixels high at 200 dots per inch save this as

oemlogo.bmp

to C:windows/system

Next....

open notepad and type this in. Exactly as you see it here. You may of course change the words (anything you like) to suit your needs. Watch the quotes they are very important .

[general]
Manufacturer=anything you like
[Support Information]
Line1=" "
Line2="anything you like"
Line3="anything you like"
Line4="anything you like"
Line5="anything you like"
Line6="anything you like"

OK done, save this file as

OEMINFO.INI

to C:/windows/system.

Thats it you've done it!!

go to control panel system and view your work.

It really is that simple.

Thanks for all the help and assistance I have received.

I have just rebooted again my upgraded Win 10, and all still appears to be fine but I always have questions, and someone said there are never any bad questions.... I need to ask below.

1. My reboot says "Windows is activated" and Product ID: 00326-10000-00000-(and five more alpha numeric here)
Is it OK to show the Product ID, and can I check that with Microsoft ?

Does this mean that my Windows 10 is fully upgraded and completely activated by Microsoft?

I have made several different System Protection, restore points.

What is the next process that I should follow ?
Thanks for send me info. all be safe.. cliff M.

My Windows XP Pro PC (Asus p5 Series motherboard, Pentium 4 2.8processor, 2GB Ram, 512mb MSI Graphics Card, Matrox RTX100 Video card) keeps getting scattered glitches across the screen and then very soon after the system locks up/freezes and then sometimes completely crashes.
The computer was self built about 6 years ago mainly by a friend and its main purpose was to video edit but hasnt been 100% right from the start. I had used it ok and edited a few things but stopped using it for some time when it started to crash quite often. I tried using it agian recently but now I get this happening within the first 30min of using it.
One thing i always thought was that it got to hot, the software temperature gauge often showed it approaching red all the time. but this was confusing because I have 2 fans on the case (one in a flap out the top of the case_ plus I mounted a fan in a spare AGP slot near the graphics card.
I wondered if the CPU was still over heating and causing this, in that case I wouldn't have a clue what to do, or if the graphics card was faulty, in which case would I need a new one? I wouldn't want to spend a lot in case this wasn't the problem.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

What might cause this? recently, i did not have "turn off screen" enabled, but i had wanted to protect the screen. Also, screen saver was never on. But i changed "turn screen off" to 1 hour, while sleep mode was still 3 hours. screen saver is less time.

Hi!

I don't know if this is the right thread because I don't get any BSOD but it's really close to one.

The problem:
System boot stuck before login screen.
The backstory:
Messed around with ProgramData's ownership because the Indexer/Search didn't work. (read it in this forum that changing the ownership of that folder might help)
Restarted the PC and got stuck at the spinning circles. (if I press the ctrl+alt+del and click furiously it gives me the login screen without any input field, just the turn off, ease of acees and lan buttons)
I tried many things to fix this problem but with no success so far:
- run in safe mode with lan
- turn on the local administrator account and try to reset the ownership of the folder
(no permission to do that??)
- run sfc /scannow (told me that some errors couldn't be repaired)
- run DISM
- run system restore with keeping my personal files

What seemed to fix the problem:
- run system restore with deleting all files (now I can login without any problem, but the search problem remained)

What I found so far:
- CBS contains many similar lines to this
"2015-11-24 22:37:22, Info CSI 00000b04 Warning - Overlap: Duplicate ownership for directory [l:92{46}]"\??\C:\ProgramData\regid.1991-06.com.microsoft" in component Microsoft-Windows-Branding-Base-Professional, Version = 10.0.10240.16384, pA = amd64, nonSxS, PublicKeyToken"

Hello Ferencs90, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could run a sfc /scannow command to restore any modified system files back to default to fix this, but it will affect all modified system files.

If you do not want to do that, then you may be able to use the tutorial below to manually change the text branding back on the log on screen.

Hi,

I had a BSOD two days ago coming out of standby and ever since the system locks up after reaching the desktop whilst trying to log in. Logging into safe mode works perfectly fine and also logging into the Ubuntu partion has no problems. I have run malware bytes and hard disk diagonistics and found no problems.

This leaves me to believe its a driver/software issue and I'm hoping someone can help narrow this down. Have attached SF zip.

Hello there everybody!

Well I just came home from school to find out my computer has randomly shut itself off. After a restart, everything boots up fine until the screen to select user. Once I highlight or hover over any user the system just goes black and after about 5 seconds restarts itself.

Safe mode boots up without a problem.

System restore didn't help either. I went back as far as a month and nothing good has come out of it.

I definitely won't have much time to fix it during the week but I'm desperate to squeeze any time I have to get it back up. I have a few files in there I'll need for school!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,

I have Windows 7. Earlier, my computer was acting funny after trying to open some videos from my camera that I had connected. I retarted hoping it would act normal. I got the opposite. Every time I try to start up, it goes to a black screen after I put in my password. I will not let me open task manager or anything. I see a cursor that I can move around, but just a black screen. I've tried to google the problem (I am currently in safe mode) and tons of people said to do a system restore. Problem is, it says I haven't created any restore points and to open up system protection.

Here lies ANOTHER problem in my awesome string of luck. When I click on it, the system protection tab is not there. It's completely missing. I tried going to start, right clicking computer and going to properties. Guess what? It's not there either like it should be.

Does anyone know how to fix the black screen problem, OR figure out how to set system restore up??

Thanks in advance

If your camera is still contected remove it from the computer. From Safe Mode, try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two of the tutorial.)

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

The scan will look through all protected system files and try to replace incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged files with the correct versions if possible. If any problems are noted, run the scan three times and reboot back into safe mode after each scan. Please post back if this helps or not.

System has 3 accounts: Administrator password protected, and two standard user accounts. The guest account is off.
On both startup or "swittch user" the login screen only shows the system admin account icon and the password field is waiting for input. Although the two standard user accounts still show up in the "manage users" control panel utility.

Problems started as "the user profile service failed the logon". Logon screen showed all three accounts, but one of the stanrd user accounts couldn't be successfully logged into.
Followed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215 method #1 to edit registry and rename/copy/edit the S-1-5 keys. There was a S-1-5 .bak for the problem account. After editing the registry, and upon reboot only the system administrator account appeared.

Used windows restore to try to go back before the problems. The first restore point I picked failed to "install" on reboot, reported that either the restore point had problems or anti-virus program was blocking the restore. Disabled AVG, still wouldn't "apply" the restore. So I picked an earlier point in time, that restore installed without errors. The system has been rebooted several times, windows has applied patches on one of the reboots.

I tried a few other things and got non repeatable results. Once created a new standard user account. The "other user" logon icon appeared for "switch user". I tried login into one of the standard user accounts and it succeeded. I have since... Read more

Answer:only system administrator account appears on login screen

Hi drewp, according to the microsoft link you've just followed, there are certain options to take before using the registry edit as mentioned before the 3 steps accordingly. If you haven't removed completely AVG, please do so as it could be the problem in the very beginning. Use the AVG removal tool http://www.avg.com/ww-en/utilities just to make sure then check the difference. Another step to take is to run system file checker and then see if any corrupt and repaired files from the text output log. Check also the user profile service is in default or automatic. If nothing happens, move the profile account as described in method#2 from the provided MS link.

Earlier today I tried to install a game and in order to meet the requirements it asked me to install some drivers, so I did that. Then when it told me to restart my computer I did so and upon getting back to my login screen where my username with the icon should be asking for a password, it instead has no icon and now a username and a password bar awaits input. I do not understand what to put in here since I have tried my previous username and password I gave my profile when first installing windows 7. Where do I go from here? I'll be even happy just to reset my computer. I don't mind if everything is erased I didn't have much data on it anyways.I have Windows 7 and ASRockz77 motherboard.

Hello,

I've been unable to access windows due to the system restarting itself before it reaches the login screen. Here is a rundown of the problem (and where it may have started) from the beginning (I apologize if this message is quite long but I will try to be as detailed as possible so as to avoid wasting anyone?s time asking questions that I can provide info for right away):

To begin, I'm running fully updated Windows XP Professional (no other operating systems) along with up to date McAfee anti-virus software. Up to this point I haven't been having any issues/problems or suspicious behavior with my system and haven't had any for a long time. Nor have I at any point agreed to install anything suspicious from the internet (i.e. pop-ups warning me of viruses on my computer and recommending that I install such and such program, etc.).

Last night I shut down my system, opting to let Windows install some system updates and shut down on its own when it was done, as is often the case. I turned on my PC this morning, logged in, and Windows proceeded to load normally.

Less than a minute after the desktop loaded a window proclaiming to be Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool popped up and informed me that it had found several threats on my system (I knew that it was the name of a real Microsoft program and it looked pretty legitimate and I assumed that it was probably something Windows had just recently installed the night before as an update for safety rea... Hello friends, I recently got the Gnome desktop environment on the Ubuntu Software Center, and I used the gdm and startx command as said by another forum site. Nothing wrong, they said to logout, tried to login again, goes to a black screen and sends me back to the Ubuntu login screen. Tried again, same result, panicked. Looked up video tutorial on how to fix it, they said to access the control panel via ctrl-alt-f1 or f2, went to a black screen, no text at all, computer runs fine, no crashing. Is there a special way to access the terminal in a System76 computer, I really don't know very confusing? Is there a way to login with the guest session? I use Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf on my laptop. What causes this, I read on Ubuntu forums it's driver issues with Ubuntu and Nvidia, but I have my suspections with the Gnome desktop environment.

Few days ago, I pasted a new file called ""uxtheme.dll" downloaded from net in C:\WINDOWS\system32.There was already a file by that name so i renamed the old file as "uxtheme.dll.old" and pasted the new file.Few days after that i installed Style XP Software(a software to customize desktop, screensaver, themes, logon screens, bootscreens). I changed the logon screen from its default. I restarted the system. Now i cud not see the login screen and i am unable to open the computer.

So, using the recovery console (XP SP2 CD), I tried to repair the Windows. In the process, I thought i should delete the login screen and deleted it using some commands(DOS Commands).I also deleted the whole "Resources" file (C:\Windows\Resources) using some dos commands.

Still my computer was not loging in.

So, I referred to an article from Microsoft(support.microsoft.com/kb/310396) which
I was confused. So i saw an article in Microsoft (support.microsoft.com/kb/310396). The problem in that article was similar to mine and i followed the instructions given there.

Still am not able to open .

I have huge data (Crucial-- its not just games /songs) in C: drive. I thought i shud not loose the whole data. So, I did not reinstall XP SP2.

If U can pl help me, i shall be very grateful to U.

Answer:Windows XP SP2 login Screen not showing and unable to open the system

Hi vedantadeshika

Have you tried to boot into Safe Mode yet? If not, try that. As the PC is powering up, start tapping the F8 continuously until you see the Safe Mode menu. Choose "Safe Mode" from the list. If you didn't password-protect your Administrator account, you might be able to start things in Safe Mode using that account, and from Add/Remove Programs remove your theme-altering programs. From the Start/Run box, you could also try typing msconfig ...And in that program disable theme software from running at startup.

Should that not work, see if you can get System Restore to run & use a restore point from before your theme-altering episode. Try the following instructions from the Microsoft Knowledge Base article --- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

I think you might want to make backups as soon as you can, too, if you have data that you cannot easily replace.

Best of luck

Yesterday I bought a new mother board for my PC my Processor model is AMD Athlon II X3 440 Triple Core Processor, but after changing Mother Board in system information it's showing my Processor as AMD Phenom II 4 B40 four core processor. I don't know why it is showing like this. Is this dangerous for my hardware? I used AM2N68-AM PLUS before and now I changed M5A78L-M LX. Except this every thing else is perfect.

Answer:Processor info is showing wrongly in system info after changing MB

It's not dangerous, but I believe you can get it to display correctly. All you have to do is open Device Manager, right-click each entry for the CPU and choose Uninstall. When you're finished, reboot and then open Device Manager up when it's done rebooting and check the CPU again. It should be showing up correctly after that, but if not then we'll go from there.

Hello all,

I have been having some issues with my alienware m17x R2 for a long time. Every few months I would have an issue where the computer screen goes black at the login screen (just before) and nothing else would happen. I would be then able to start up my computer in save mode and do a system restore back a few days and it was all good for another few months. (Note: something I have noted is that this seemed battery related because the alienware "head" which is the power button, did not illuminated when I connect it to my AC charger like it usually does whenever I am having this issue).

This time though it was different and I am unable to do system restores to any point in the past. I always get the same error, it says:

"The data is invalid. (0x8007000D)", then I am given the choice to "Run System Restore" or "Close". If I press "Run System Restore" I will get one more error "Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)".

In addition, when I restart my computer, I do not get the black screen anymore, instead I get a flickering image of where the login usually occurs but without the login button. In other words its the red alienware image just flickering and nothing happens (not given any options to login).

I have therefore trying several things to solve either of these 2 problems (either the flickering screen at the login or the error of system restore). Looking through this forum and google I found a bit of hope but... Read more

I have 2 issues that have shown up on my PC.

HJT Log follows the description of both issues.

I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad R61i (7732/A12), Vista Ultimate w/SP2, 2GB RAM. Security is Windows Live Onecare. All O/S patches up-to-date.

Issue 1: Random Sound

Periodically the system will start playing random sounds. The sounds have been song clips, or synthesized cat meows. Not files from my computer (heaven forbid!). If I close my browser (Firefox 3.0.11), the sounds will stop. I have already checked Firefox add-ons, which are: "Down Them All", "Move Media Player" and "Speed Dial". All are up-to-date.

Issue 2: Random "lock computer and go to login screen"

If I leave my computer for a short time (less than 5 minutes) periodically the system will lock the computer and go to the login screen.

I am not talking about a system / browser / application lock-up.
I am talking about the system leaving the user logged in, but going to the login screen. To get a visual of what I am talking about, press <CTRL><ALT><DELETE> and select "Lock This Computer" (or press windows-L).

Screen saver is set to "None".
Current power plan is "Timers off (Presentation)"

If I have not been specific enough, I greatly apologize.

I am very grateful to all of you who volunteer to help.

Use a very difficult password. We have plenty of password generators on majorgeeks.
Enable the system admin account and password protect it.

I have an Acer desktop with Vista 32bit Home Premium edition with Service Pack 1 loaded on it. My computer was working fine yesterday afternoon (at least it appeared to be), but when I tried to boot my computer up last night, I could not get my desktop to load. Windows seems to boot up, as I can get to the screen with the user names to login. No matter which user I select, however, the screen just goes black with only the cursor showing. I have tried booting from the last good boot point from the F8 menu, but the same problem persists. I have tried booting in safe mode, but the screen shows up all black once again, except for the four 'Safe Mode' texts in the four corners and the text Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 6001: Service Pack 1) at the center top of the screen.

The Repair Your Computer option from the F8 menu at startup is about the only thing I have been able to get open on the computer thus far. Startup repair can't find anything wrong with the computer. When I try to do System Restore, I get the error 0x800700B7, so it can't rollback to my restore points. I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and it didn't seem to find any errors, although I couldn't view the whole report when it restarted because the screen, once again, went completely black except for the mouse cursor when it restarted.

I am at wits end and have no idea what to do to try to get my computer to start. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as this is my computer... Read more

Today I was playing a game and my system did a hard lock (no sound, no mouse, frozen image on screen), this has been a problem lately as I seem to be losing system stability for a while. I chalked it up to my system overheating before as I was typically able to shut the system down for a while, then 20-30mins later it would be fine.
However, today after my PC crashed for the second time, it started having trouble booting. Sometimes I can hit the power button and nothing happens, the power light comes on, the fans work, but no startup beep and the HDD light doesnt work. Other times I can start it, and it work like normal until it gets to the Windows 10 login screen (though most of the time it doesnt get that far before freezing), then I get a hang, and the HDD light turns off. The fans on everything continue to work, but the entire PC just freezes.
This PC about 2 years old and wasnt having any trouble until the last two months. This is the first time I have had this particular problem, but it has been crashing quite a lot over the last two months.
I had looked up this issue elsewhere, and it seems that no one can come to a consensus whether its the processor, ram, GPU or otherwise.
PC Specs:
ASUS Motherboard
8 GB RAM (Ram taken from an older PC)
4.7 GHZ 8 core processor
GTX 970
750 Watt Power Supply
Any help you can provide would be appreciated!

Can anyone tell me how to eliminate the lock screen preview and bypass the 'Sign In' button on the lock screen?

I often put my computer to sleep then to bring it back (in Windows 7) I would simply hit the space bar and turn on my mouse and it would go straight to my desktop. Now, I hit the space bar turn on my mouse, and it takes me to the lock screen preview then I hit the space bar and it takes me to a lock screen where I have to click 'Sign In' even though I have no password set.

I'm guessing I'll no longer be able to hit the spacebar, turn on my mouse and go directly to the desktop but if I can hit the spacebar, turn on the mouse, then hit the space bar one last time, that would be satisfactory.

I can access the lock screen settings and I can see all available apps and have set a detailed status app and a couple of less detailed ones. However, when I actually get to the lock screen after having set the apps to appear, there is nothing but the time and date and WiFi in bottom-right corner.

Could this be because I am logging in locally rather than using a MS account?

Can anyone help me find out why my pc keeps crashing? I'm not sure what info to provide other than hardware specs and the fact that it always crashes when I play Tibianic.org's custom Tibia client... Since the winter time, my (four year old desktop) has been freezing a lot! More recently, it will freeze when I'm using it, mainly when I'm tampering with media or browsing the web. The cursor will even freeze at the Windows XP Password/Login startup page. I've heard many things, like download spyware, run virus scans, run the Registry cleaner, defragment... etc...etc... This is what I have ALREADY tried.

- Downloaded Registry Cleaner and cleaned up the drives
- AntiVirus has deleted all "malicious programs and the like"
- Defragmented entire C:/ drive a month or two back
- Ran the "cmd" function and disabled many Startup items

The only things I have left to do are run a memory scan (to make sure my memory is working correctly), check my Motherboard for overheating issues, and what else? I really don't want to keep paying money for programs I don't need to check my computer. I'm running out of options and this is getting very aggravating. Again, my computer will OFTEN freeze every five-twenty minutes after I start using it. I can leave it on all night with no activity and it won't freeze. Sounds to me like a hardware problem. Maybe you guys can help? Thanks a ton.

Answer:Win XP user. Frequent lock ups, please help. info inside

open it up and make sure its dust free. then try running it as normal with the cover off, its one way to check and see if its overheating.

You need to remove "num lock" for single key print screen request, and if I have a short time frame, I am stuck without being able to screenshot until the num lock indicator goes away.  How do I turn off the on screen display.  Now, before you send me to the previously asked questions of similar nature, I have tried. There is no "display settings" in Control Panel. There is no "advanced display settings" on the settings panel. And there is no way to control it through NVIDIA or Intel graphics settings (that I can see).  Thanks kindly.

Good afternoon,

I just did a clean install of 7 to fix errors with my laptop, and it fixed one, but not the other main issues,
My caps lock, and number lock button on the keyboard don't have a light on it and the pop up that is supposed to pop up doesn't show up on screen.
I figured by doing a clean install it would all magically appear again... I was wrong, I have tweaked everything I could think of looking/trying to change setting from the keyboard in control panel, (including messing around with ease of use) and Gateways so called "support" area was of no help, as well as googling the issue has led me down a path of useless tips, I have also looked on this forum for help.

Any help in this area would be GREATLY appreciated!!

If you are using Windows 8, then it is important to note that the on-screen indicators for Num Lock and Caps Lock are not available in Windows 8. To know more about this, you can refer to the link below:http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/30035/~/no-num-lock-and-caps-lock-indicator If you are using Windows 7, you can check if following the steps below helps:1. Click on "Start".2. Type keyboard in the "Search" field.3. Double-click "Keyboard options".4. Go to "Key settings" tab and then, go to "Key settings" list.5. Locate and double-click "Caps Lock" and select the option "Display Caps Lock status on screen". Click "Finish".6. Follow Step 5 for Nums Lock as well. Hope this will resolve your issue.

Hi. I recently bought a new R5-417T laptop, and in the process of personalisation found no intuitive way to disable the caps-lock or num-lock notifications. (Windows 10 btw)  ^Notification in question^ How would I go about disabling this? I've tried looking in the BIOS, in regedit and some mythical "Launch Manager" program bundled with older acer laptops that I can't find a working version for.
