Hello HP,I am experiencing the same issue in regards to my cover not closing and catching on the left hinge and a screw rattle noise coming from inside the laptop. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Jose Mesmar

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

 I have the exact same problem that I had been hearing when using the PC for a whie, maybe 6 months or more, but did not actually see the issue until I had to take the case apart to replace a fan that had failed (according to BSOD). What turned out to be the cause of the constant clattering and the fan failure, etc. was the pieces of the base that ,once upon a time, held the fitting that the hinge screws went into. The aggravating thing about this is that I had a Care Pack that had just expired on 8/15 which I feel sure would have covered at least the fan replacement if not the required parts for the hinge. If anything is being done about this issue, please let me know

Kevin, As a direct result of your input, I have since been contacted by Shaun with the Hewlett Packard AMS TCO Escalations Team and it appears that we may have come to an agreeable solution to resolve my broken hinge and destroyed fan issue. Although it is too soon to mark this as Resolved, I am really happy with the degree of ownership that Shaun has taken with my concerns. I do feel that this will come to a positive conclusion and will be sure that Kudos are made to you and Shaun and others as merited. New Parts, including new hinges and top and bottom cover, all received Saturday (overnight shipping included). Many Thanks to you and Shaun for your help. Hello, The hinge on my HP ENVY TouchSmart 15 has been loose (or broken?) for quite some time. It caused the bottom of my laptop to split open on the side which has the power button (left side).  The laptop was not dropped or damaged in other ways, before I knew it I noticed the issue. First I noticed the screen feeling loose, but only recently I paid closer attention and saw the hinge was loose. Other than the hinge issue, the computer is in good condition and works great. I would hate to lose it because of the hinge. From reading the forum, it seems to be a very common issue with this particular type of laptop. Therefore I am wondering if anything has or can be done to help us who have encountered this issue. Thank you!

Wow , I have had the same problem , left hinge screw and besel came off and then got stuck between the screen and keyboard . Went to close the lap top and the screw was stuck in the hinge and next thing you know I have a cracked screen. Bought this laptop in December still under warranty , but HP says that this is not a know issue so they will not cover physical damage. Then I find this message board and wow , here we are all with a left hinge screw issue. Only problem this caused a broken screen. My case has been escalated still waiting for a call or email .  Any one have any advise? Geek Squad wants over 1000.00 to fix screen , that is more than I paid for the laptop new. Really disapointed in HP service , have a second HP Envy 17 in shop under warranty repair for a fan malfunction , they are fixing that one. This really may be my last HP. I own about 14 machines between my office and home. May be time to look for something else.

Had to take apart my laptop last night. Found the left hinge had broken away from the plastic. Found a number of threads about this exact topic. Would have replied to one of those but it appears they are closed. Need to know where to get a replacement part. If this is the wrong forum please move to the correct one.

I have bought this laptop with high configuration in Nov 2013, on March 2014 I found the Left Hinge broken, I keep on using for some time then keep using with external monitor, now i wanted to get it fixed, and noone fixing it saying no parts available, please help me to fix it.

The left hinge is broken on my HP Envy 17" Touchsmart notebook.  The bottom plastic casing is also coming away. It is hard to open and close the laptop without causing more problems and I'm worried about the screen cracking.  My local tech service has been trying to source replacement parts, but has found none available. They have identified that this is a common problem with this model, and I see there are hundreds of postings with the same problem.  Please could you help?

It appears that this is a common hardware problem for over two years, based on  the posts.  This is my son's laptop for college, so we have now had to swap out our home Hp Pavilion laptop with him.  We purchased a two year HP warranty, and it just recently expired.  This is our family's seventh HP desktop or laptop.  How is HP dealing with this issue?

One of the screws that holds my HP Envy 17 - j013cl laptop casing together no longer attaches to anything. It appears that the screw was once attached to a plastic fitting, but now that fitting is broken and the pieces of plastic are loose inside the laptop. When I open the laptop, the casing pulls apart near the hinge. I purchased the factory refurbished laptop in January of this year. How can the laptop be repaired? One source told me that they would have to replace the entire cover ... IF they could find one.  Is this repair covered under warranty? I just found a topic for the same issue with the dv7 "dv7 Left hinge pulling case apart? What the heck!".  It appears that HP have some real widespread problems with the left hinge of their laptop casings!

The screw is lost some where in the laptop, the left corner seperates near the hinge when I open the lid. Laptop just a year old.

My left hinge has recently become visibly broken, with the top keyboard metal casing and the bottom black plastic casing becoming seperated near the hinge. I have also noticed the fan making rattling sounds as if broken pieces from the hinge have entered it. The right hinge also was slightly opening the case but tighting the screw on that side has kept that from reoccuring. Although I put in a new screw into the left hand side from enderneath the case, it has since fallen though into the casing or out completely due to the broken hinge part inside. I have seen many posts on here talking about a similar problem and many have been frustrated with the poor repsonse from HP who haven't wanted to repair the laptops for free in these cases, as this seems to be a design fault. I am no longer under warranty and do not have 100 + to fork out on a laptop which was roughly 800 RRP which is not even 2 years old due to a design fault. Is there any other way of repairing. Also, I had someobody look at this, and they say this can only be repaired with a new top case part number 720570-001.However, this isn't directly sold by HP at the moment, only through resellers and it seems that is roughly 180. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated as I am a student and tutor  and so I rely on this laptop very much and it is vital that it is working without issue at the moment as it is the middle of exam period. Regards,ARIA

The left Hinge is pulling the upper portion of my wife's computer off , as the very heavy touchscreen applied too much torque to the notebook case . I have read in the forums that is is a very common issue with this model. My il-laws bought the same computer for my wife and her brother, and the same thing has happened to both computers. Is there any way this can be fixed? I have seen in the forums than many other people have this same problem, but I have not seen anyone post anything about any solutions to it. Any assistance or advice would be appreciated.

As you said this is a common problem with HP Envy's. I pulled apart my laptop to replace the fan in it and having the same problem as you j decided to take a look at it. What it was was a broken Skrew Hole (Sorry I'm having a mind blank) but where the skrew connects to the motherboard has been broken. This is a small peice of plastic. There is no real way of fixing this however there is actually a skrew right beside that one. Apart from when your moving the screen and the look of it, it woint damage your computer and nothing will come falling off it e.g screen, surround. I'm sorry but that's all the information/advice I can offer

This morning, I picked up my laptop to get started with my work day, and was greeted with what sounded like a bit of plastic bouncing around inside my fan (quite disconcerting).  When I took a closer look, it seemed that the casing around the left hinge of the screen had started to break apart and separate, which is where I imagine that piece of plastic in the fan originated. I can squeeze the casing back together, but it only lasts for a couple minutes before reseparating.Unfortunately, my laptop is outside the warranty provided, but I did see numerous similar complaints in this and other forums, so I was wondering a) why this known hinge issue wasn't a part of any recall, and b) what I can do to get it resolved? Being outside the warranty is obviously a bit disappointing, but is there perhaps a kit I can purchase to repair the issue myself before it gets worse, or am I out of luck, essentially? I'll attach a couple images in a moment to illustrate the issue.

I have HP Envy 17 laptop and noticed that the left hinge got loose and something is rattling inside a screw or a piece of plastic. I worry that is can get stuck in the fan and cause hardware issues. I've read a number of posts on this forum, indicating that this is a rather common issue with these laptops, which is likely due to the flaw in the design. I wonder if HP can do something to help. The screw on the back under the right side hinge has become loose and fallen out twice.I put it back in the first time nice and tight and tightened all the other screws. It just fell out again!  This is with gentle handling.  And it took less than a month to wiggle loose.Would using a little Locktite blue on the screw when I put it back void my warrantee? 

Answer:Y50-70 loose bottom screw under hinge.

No, the use of Locktite blue won't void the warranty and is probably a very good idea since this is a reoccurring problem. Be sure to just use a tiny dab on the threads.

As the title describes - a screw on my laptop has come loose and gone missing and now the bezel (the thin plastic cover surrounding the keyboard in case my use of bezel is wrong) has separated from the lower half of the casing on the upper right corner of my E145, above the kensington lock and mains input. The LCD hinge is now loose and lifts up when moved, the kensington lock housing also moves with it. This image shows the problem - that's the right side hinge, the separation can be seen at the top of the case and to the right of the kensington lock port, on the hinge itself. I haven't tampered with the screw in any way but did notice the bezel wasn't flush with the battery on this side (it is on the other hinge), so the screw has been loose for some time and finally worked its way free. I posted this thread before I realised the screw had gone but I might as well keep it up (if only to remind anyone else with this problem to check the screws ) but I have two questions: 1. In the event we're unable to find the screw, will it be possible to procure a replacement from Lenovo? When looking at the laptop from the bottom, the screw is located in the top left corner just above the rubber foot and battery release switch 1. 2. If the screw has come loose because the threading is damaged then this will need to be repaired. My laptop's warranty has not yet expired, will the warranty cover these repairs?

Question: left hinge loose

The left hinge is very loose, when i open and close the laptop it pops in and out and when rotating the screen somethimes the creen scrapes the body , the lid also soesnt sit perfect because of the hinge (all same problem diffrent symptoms

Recently, the left hinge has become loose on my HP Envy after having it for over a year and a half with no issues. While my warranty has expired, I have discovereed that this is a common manufacterer's issue for this product, so I was wondering what options HP offered for this problem since it is not the fault of the customer.

My left hinge makes cracking noise and has become loose. I have to press it close to the base because it separates. My screen, i have to be careful with because it doesn't wantot stay at the angle I like due to the weak hinge. Can you please assist?

I have recently noticed that the hinge on my computer is coming loose, and I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if it will cause further damage? I would like to get it fixed but I can't find contact information except for computerized assistance, and I'd rather talk to an actual person. I'm not on warranty anymore, but I have seen that other people have gotten this issue resolved without paying, even with expired warranty. Would anyone be able to help me with this problem? Thanks

I have kept my Notebook with great care and have never dropped or bumped it. After a yaer I noticed that the right side hinge has become a bit loose and within 3 months it has become quite loose. At the moment it seems to be manageable to fix the problem but I am afraid that in some time it might pop out of the plactic body. Is there a loose screw that can be tightened? What should I do to prevent more damage to the hinge and body?

The hinge on the left side has popped up as the base of the metal hinge has separated from the frame. Laptop was puchased from Costco in 2012.

 I purchased a HP envy touch smart i7 laptop in 2014 from Bangladesh. But after using it for 3 months the hinge broke off and one side cover is gap open where hinges broke. I was wondering how could it happen? As I didn't do any forcing on this.So I took it to the computer source the distributor from whom I purchased it. They told me it is not under warranty cover as the parts is broken. So I am using it like that for 2 years as PC. So I don't have to close the lid. But Now I know there is a lot of people facing the same problem. Hinges broken problem.  So I would like to ask If this is a manufacturer defect? and What is the solution for broken hinges?

Last year while my daughter was at school she started reporting to me that her HP Envy Touchsmart 15" laptop's case was pulling apart at the corners.  Then she started reporting hearing rattling noises inside the case, then the fan stopped working.   I called HP support, and was told by one person the laptop was under warranty, but that wouldn't be covered because of normal wear and tear.  I called back later and then was told the laptop was not under warranty.  I called back several times, and got a variety of answers all of which added up to between $300 and $500 for repairs on a laptop that I spent $700 on! When she came home for a break from school, I took apart the laptop and removed the debries from the fan (I had purchased a replacement fan which I didn't need) and the laptop stopped overheating.  Next I tackled the hinge problem which by this time had progressed to be both hinges.  The weak plastic connections on the bottom were in bad shape, cracked and peices missing.  So (being the brain surgeon I am ) I decided to use epoxy to more firmly affix the hinges to the case.  That fix has now failed. I have seen and posted on other threads that this type of failure is (despite what HP support says) fairly common in the whole line of HP consumer grade laptops!  Before this, I had mainly used HP business grade laptops and had thought that the quality there would also be in the consumer grade laptops.  My... Hello!I bought my computer about 11 months ago for college and the past month it has been having some weird cracking noises when opening/closing the lid. A friend of mine told me to watch out since he had the same computer and it had broken off. I noticed today that theroght hinge is actually starting to come out and the base of the computer is also getting loose. This is very strange since I barely move my computer from the desk since it is so big, plus I have a smaller one that I use to take to classes so I don't mess with this one for stuff that is unnecessary. I am a college student using an HP Envy TouchSmart 17 Notebook. I have had the laptop for almost 2 and a half years. It is no longer under warrenty. The left hinge is broken and causing the platic to split when I open my computer. This is frustrating because I take good care of my computer. I have read about several people who have had the same problem. I am not sure how to go about getting it fixed so that I can continue to use my laptop. I have always enjoyed the quality of HP products but am a bit frustrated with the hinge breaking so easily.

Please help - the hinge on my HP ENVY TouchSmart Sleekbook 4-1105dx split apart last week. I can't open or close the cover now, as it causes the top section to separate and pieces of plastic around the hinge break off. I've looked online all week and see many others have had this happen, but I can't find any instructions from HP on what we're supposed to do. I cannot lose my computer. I use assistive technology, because I can't write or type without pain. I have to get this fixed before the laptop breaks, or I won't be able to my work or anything else.

Hello,  I purchased an HP Envy Touchsmart 15 a little over a year ago. The hinge seems to have come unglued fromt the inside. I read that the HP Envy is prone to this, since the hinge is glued in production as opposed to being fastened with a screw. I'm a graduate student, and I'm unable to use my HP for schoolwork due to the faulty hinge. The computer has been handled carefully, and it's never been dropped. This is my first HP. It was great when it was working; however, a laptop that costs nearly a grand and works only for 1 year due to the construction is extremelhy dissapointing.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how it was handled by HP. Bought Envy in December 2014.  At about 19 months I noticed the hinge was not working right and I found a small screw which fell out.  The hinge has gotten worse over the last month or so even though I  have been careful with it. I am the only user.  I saw many other posts about hinge problems on the envy.  Is Hp doing anything about this problem?  I believe its only a one year warrenty.  Am I SOL because of this?

Hi Team, I am from Sydney, Australia. I have purchased HP Touchsmart laptop in 2013 around December. My laptop have a broken hinge, which is putting pressure on the case near the hinge on both the sides. Seems this is a popular problem. At first this started on one side after around 2 years of buying this laptop.But now, I have this problem on both sides and I don't know what to do as I am out of warranty. Very frustrated with this...I opened the laptop gently as I would always do  and the hinge on the left side of the laptop just snapped and popped out of the plastic monitor frame.  The design of the hinges are just terrible and i can now see how they work because the case has been damaged just from opening and closing the laptop.  I can now see inside the whole left side of the case.  To top it off I have already invested considerable time into upgrading the OS to Windows 10 and customizing and installing software on this laptop. I cannot close my laptop entirely since the screen closes on an incorrect angle. Since I am out of warranty, is there any way to fix this problem? After reading several posts, it seems to be a common problem with the envy models.

Hi,  I have had my spextre for just over a year now. About 6 months or so ago I started to notice the screen wobble a little more, I played it off as nothing. Not so long ago I notice the left hinge is loose, and that is the source of the wobble on the screen. It seems as though the left hinge can be pushed in towards the laptop a couple of mm signlalling to me it is not properly secured. Is there a fix for this? TIA!

 Hi, I would like to understand how my problem will be dealt with as I am now working with a machine which is very physically fragile and I would like to get it fixed as quickly as possible so that no further damage is done to the machine. My machine is covered by warranty, but going through ww.hp.com/contacthp the site didn't agree.  So I put in my details and attached the invoice for the machine which says that I have a Care Pack which means that it still is in warranty.  Now I need to wait for 1 day until I get a response?  Very disappointingly, the page where I filled these details in did not even send me a "receipt" email, so I need to wait 1 day, hope that my warranty validation request was actually made, and hope for a response.  If I don't get a response, how then do I get back in touch (via what medium, I wonder?  it seems that I am not allowed to make a phone call?) So, hopefully this will be resolved by tomorrow.  At that point I can then type in again a description of the fault. Then what will happen?  I wait another day for someone to call me?  How many days will this take?  What can't I just phone someone?  Or even go on a "chat"?  I'm not allowed to do that as my warranty has expired (except that it hasn't actually expired - that's an HP mistake). The problem is that the case has broken at the location of the screws near the hinges on one side.  The scr... I recieved my HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1100 se 2 years ago. I was very careful with it and never dropped it. About a year after, the corner near the right hinge began to come loose everytime I open and close the laptop and it is getting worse.The hinge itself looks like it is starting to break also. I searched and I see that HP offered after warranty repair since its a commen issue in this kind of models.

The right hinge broke on my ENVY m6. Now the left one is about to go. The waranty is up and I have noticed that this is a common problem with this product. I should hope that there has been a recall on this. HP should at least repair the issue free of charge (waranty or no waranty). I take great care of my things and my computer is no exception. Please give me advice on this one. I am extremely disappointed at this point.

The Hinges on my Envy TouchSmart 15  Notebook are falling apart.  The Screen is now still working but when I turned it on i got a message that the fan is not working and warned that it could overheat.  I have looked on line and found that this is a very common problem with this model.  The hinges are apparently just glued togather and parts break off and cause the fan to stop.  This is rather upsetting and frustrating and will be the last computer I plan to purchase with an HP stamped on it.  What do I do now to get this fixed ?

Hello,  I have noticed that my right screw connecting the hinge of my screen and base of the laptop has come loose after a while now. I tried to tighten it but it won't. I read a few articles with people of the same laptop series and it made me think that whether this is a manufacturer's defect or not.  There is also a piece which, by my guess, has broken off and is now loose inside the body of the keyboard as I can hear it when I move my laptop around.  Is there a way to get this repaired at a repair centre? Or a better and more precise diagnostic, as I am just basing this on what I have read and my guess as an engineer. Thank you!

Hello, I have had my laptop for over 2 years now. I have really been taking a great care of it and I have been more than satisfied with it until this week. One of the hinges suddenly cracked open. I did not drop it nor did I cause the damage. It really worries me that the hinge practically broke by itself and it seems as it is a common problem. I cannot close my laptop and I am afraid that my screen will get damaged if I don't get it fixed asap. And I really need my laptop for college and for work. I would love to hear from HP team on how to solve this problem quickly. Hi HP Team, This is the second time that my hinge has malfunctioned. My HP Envy was sent in for repair a year ago under warranty, and now warranty is up and the same problem has occured. I notice many people have had problems like this with similar models. I'd like to know whether I'd need to pay to have it fixed again, despite it being the same problem that was supposed to be fixed. I have the order confirmations of the previous repair and can send that if needed. It is unacceptable to me to have such a fault laptop, considering how much importance it has for my school work. I have searched this forum, Google, and YouTube, but haven't found a way to repair the left hinge on my H* ENVY TouchSmart 17-j153cl laptop. The left hinge has separated from the main chassis causing the bottom of the laptop to pop out of the top part. Attachment to the screen is still fine. The right hinge has not failed yet, but with the extra pressure on it, it may only be a matter of time. I am just out of warranty, unfortunately. Does anyone have any resources for attempting this repair? I'd hate to break my computer worse than it already is by going in blindly.  Thank you, -Brian

Hello!  I have owned my HP ENvy Touchsmart for Roughly 2 years and 9 months. The system has always worked wonderfully. But in the middle of 2016  I noticed that the two bolts next to the hinges had disappeared. I have never tampered with the laptop and never attempted to remove the bottom casing.  The bolts being missing has caused the hinges to push apart the casing and the gap widens on a weekly basis as I close and open my laptop. This started with the left side and now has moved to both.  Reading through the forums I see that this is a common problem and I would appreciate some advice on how to fix it, as a private repair would cost upwards of 100. I bought this laptop from HP as a refurbished model. Around the same time this started happening I began to receive an error occasionally when booting up from sleep mode that reads "Display driver failed to respond" after a momentary screen glitch and black out.  I love the machine but this problem will inevitably cause the screen to malfunction and the laptop to be unusable. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Richard

I noticed a cracking sound every time I opened up the lid and then it stopped but i took my laptop bottom off today and i saw the crack and the screw was so lose but somehow stayed in. I noticed a gold thing which i guessed that the screw used to screw into but it disappered into my laptop and now it wont go back in and now that it wont go in im afraid that the hinge will break and then my laptop is useless. Please help!!

I have had my laptop for just over a year and I have never transported it anywhere, as I just leave it on my desk. However, when I opened up my laptop today, the left hinge came off loose. Now the left corner of the screen is very loose from the screen border. Would HP be able to fix it, even though the warranty for this laptop has just finished 2 months ago? I am concerned, because I haven't done anything to it and it was very sudden. I'm pretty sure that it's a manufacture fault and this is an issue. Hi, It seems that others have had this problem with a loose hinge too. My screen started fading to white (with faint vertical lines). At first I could jiggle the display and the display would correct but over time it's gotten worse. My computer runs fine otherwise, but I need to use an external monitor or I can't see anything. I'm suspecting a loose connection but can't find a good video showing how to fix this. My computer is no longer under warranty. Any advice or help pls?

I bought my Hp envy about 18 months ago and a few months ago the hinge started getting loose and I noticed that a few screws were missing. This was a few weeks after It had come back for repair for a bios issue and recently I noticed that the actual bottom plastic was starting to crack and eventually the plastic was sticking out and I struggled to push it back in like I usually did. Ive seen that this issue is extremely common with these laptops and most have said in the HP forums that its a design issue. So I don't want to continue using the laptop in case something major gets damaged. Ive seen in other forums that some users have had there laptops replaced but all im wanting is a quick easy fix. Thanks

It appears the hinge assembly for my PC has begun to push the case apart, as the top is aluminum and the bottom is plastic, This problem is getting unreasonable. I looked online to see if there was some fix and immediatly found that the problem is pervasive, I'm hoping that there is a way to repair this, because I don't want the case to come completely apart.But, I don't want it to get damaged further, I have always used this PC and it just has out of the blue Started popping apart in the back where the aluminum comes in contact with the hinges. Hopefully even though I am out of the warrenty by about a year there is some fix to this problem, because I have an HP home computer that has worked perfectly for years, while this laptop in less than 2 years the case just starts popping apart. I am about to enroll in college and need a working laptop. So if there is any way to easily fix this please tell me, and If it is fixable at all If any additional information is needed please just ask. I found a picture Of somone with the exact same hinge problem with the back of the case, having the exact same effect on my pc

Hello, I bought this HP ENVY m6-n015dx Notebook PC   laptop in November 2014. Just two months back when I was in india laptop hinge broke for no reason at all. It was not dropped nor manhandled in any way. In India NO HP service centers were ready to service this laptop as this was purchased in USA. Hello Hp, I have an issue in regards to my laptop. First and foremost I want to stress I have never dropped or spilt or mistreated my laptop. I believe I take very good care of my laptop, which is why I never renewed my warranty subscription. I do frequently take my laptop to class at the university I attend so it does involve plenty of closings/openings and moving from place to place. I do not know whether this could impact this, but just three days ago (9/26/2016) I moved my laptop from my desk to my living room. In doing so the far left screw on the back cover fell out of the laptop. Confused I looked at it and put it back inside the laptop, but it would not screw in! It seems the screw has been stripped. Now when ever I open and close my laptop there is a large gap between the bottom cover and the top. Noticing that there has been several other cases online of the same scenario it has raised my questions. How can something like this happen too several people in the same sense. I would call but money is tight and do not want to pay to talk to someone. I have an HP Envy Touchsmart 17 inch laptop.  The primary problem is the left notebook screen hinge has broken loose at lower case mount. This caused the left side to separate from the upper and lower case.

Hello,Im new in the community. I Just notice a couple of days ago my laptop as some loose Bolts and the hinge on the left side is coming Up. The laptop is woking perfectly besides that.  Its going to make 2 Years now in March that I own it, my warranty is Finished. Althought I was thiking about extend it because it just finished a couple of months ago. Any ideas how can I fix this problem? Thank You

The left hingle on my Toiuchsmart 17 is binding up and causing the case to separate.  Can someone from HP contact me and let me know what can be dome to fix this problems.  It appear that this is a reoccurring issue.

I am having an issure with the corner of the base of the laptop seperating near the bottom left of the screen (near the hinge). When the laptop is opened, the piece pop apart. When I try to snap them back together, they pop back apart as soon as I let go. I have been looking on the forum and it seems that this was a common problem. I am concerned because I do not want it to break as it was not a cheap laptop. Can anybody help with this issue?

The left hinge of the laptop is causing the bottom case to pop off. Whenever I open the notebook, the black bottom portion of the laptop separates from the top grey portion, exposing the inside of the laptop. When I close the laptop, the bottom case snaps back into place.I have had this laptop for over three years, with no other issue. Is there anything HP can do to resolve this hardware problem? Thanks

Question: HP envy left hinge

I've read in the forum that someone got their laptop repaired at NO COST?? Even after lapse of warranty? Wow, what did you do to convince HP to do this? I have sent several requests and complaints and a HP rep phoned to ask about it then told me to pay $300.00 for the repair. I do believe a substandard quality back cover which undoubtedly costs very cheaply to make is a good trade of for keeping customers. But it seems HP is more concerned about making money once and not considering about after sales and follow up sales. They certainly lost me and I was considering buying the Spectre but not anymore. BTW I checked an online supplier for the back cover and it sells for $35.00 from China but I prefer to do the repairs myself.

The left hinge seems to be undone and when you open/close it seems to pry off the left corner of the plastic bottom of the casing. After the laptop is closed, i can push the parts back together, but upon opening it gets torn open again. What can I do, is there a replacment casing I can buy or something? Please let me know as soon as possible.

My HP Envy 17 SE has shown the well-known left hinge error in its hinge area, something consistent with recent complaints in a design flaw. I purchased it in 2014 for my university usage and it's right at that critical point in my Senior year where I cannot go without this dependable laptop. Took it to get looked at and evaluated at a local shop and they said that the needed part to stop the splitting is no longer available. It looks like its an external thing and the left hinge pops. It is horrible to have such a bad issue when the brand is generally dependable but I am sad to say that this happened fairly recently after my warranty expiration. Left hinge pops and it seems like my laptop is now nothing but a glorified desktop. Are there any solutions to this? This brand has been dependable for my family and I happened to get the ENVY's "flawed" design as my university pick.

Bought my wife a new HP Envy, inherited her old Envy 17 inch and realized that when you open the screen the bottom panel separates some in the left corner by left hinge. I guess this is a ongoing problem for these models. Wondering if HP is doing anything about this issue through means of out of warranty assistance? For me the biggest concern is that this will get worse and affect the fan or worse the hinge will break completely.

I've seen tons of post regarding the left hinge issue on the envy 17.  I also have this problem, have replaced two fans due to the plastic part the hings screws into break ing and getting into the fan.   Also I'm beyond the waranty period.  Havs HP created a repair kit or replacement case with better design to fix my laptop issue?   Laptop is only 2 years old.  I hope HP will stand behind their product and help customers with this issue

Just checking if there has been a fix for this since I see this has been a problem for many people. I as well noticed the hinge and casing pulling apart but never thought it was broken. Until the fan stop working and computer wanted to shut down. Quite frequently I heard the fan making screetching noises which probably had the plastic from the hinge and casing floating around it. My question is this an easy fix or just buy a new laptop. Paid alot of money for this and works great other than this problem. Thanks

I purchased my HP Envy TS 17 Notebook from Costco and now the left hinge is broken. I have used it exclusively for school and have taken very good care of it; however, now, I am unable to close it. The left hinge hangs and the case is popping apart. So far, I had been very happy with the laptop, but this definitely a problem. I paid nearly $ 1,000 for this computer. At the time of purchase, I was completely unaware of the previous hinge problems in HP laptops.  Please help!!

Hi, I purchased my Envy M6 about three years ago. It is obviously out of warranty. Today, the left hinge mechanism failed.I am unable to close the lid without causing further damage, as case is splitting aroud the hinge. After briefly looking for solutions to this problem I was astounded by the sheer number of reports of the exact same malfunction occuring on this device.With countless reports of the problem, I find it incomprehensable that there has been no recall to resolve the malfunctioning parts.  Rather than a recall, the information I can find through these forums suggests that HP is charging customers for the privilage of repairing their malfunctioning product.I'm hoping that HP is able to address this issue!

This is in response to the 2014 post, "HP Envy 17" Left Hinge and Casing," and I'm posting here b/c I'm not able to reply in that thread (maybe HP got tired of hearing about it?). I am having the exact same issue but with my HP Envy 15.6". I purchased it 13 months and 3 days ago. Up until this point, I've loved it. It's been an excellent machine. That is until this morning. The left hinge completely broke and the plastic piece detached. When I close the laptop I can place it back on, but when I open it up it pops off again and makes popping noises. I want to note that I have taken good care of it, gentle care (in fact I haven't opened and closed it very much, no reason the hinges would be worn after only a year), and basic, routine usage. I don't know what to do. I'm concerned that this will only get worse over time and am worried of the potential internal damage this could cause. I've read all of the threads, the many, countless customers who have the same issue. It really calls into question HP's brand and the quality of their products. I assume my warranty is expired. And it's very suspicious that this happened just at the year mark, about a month after my warranty expired. This seems to have been a known problem since 2014 (almost 3 years!) with no solutions for customers. The only option I've seen is a repair at around $150-300, which I think is outlandish to pay and insulting to customers. This is not average "wear and tear." This is clearly a design flaw... I have looked several places on how to get this fixed, yet I am also seeing that HP will send a replacement for free. This has become such a nuisance. I have taken metaciously care of my laptop and to have this happen is unacceptable. It has nearly broke all of the plastic slits on the left side. Will someone please help me? Thanks

My left hinge is broken I am guessing by reading other complaints? I have had this laptop for a little over a year and have never mishandled it in and kind of way. Now it will not turn on because it is saying problems with the fan because everytime I open it the bottom pops off. I tried to email HP but they would not reply because my warranty was up August 15th. I was wondering how much it would cost for HP to fix it? Or the Geek Squad with Best Buy? I need it fixed as soon as possible! It is my school laptop.

Hi I have a HP Envy 17"  Product No. F7T68EA~ABUSerial No. 5CG419F06DModel: 17-j130ea The casing around the left hinge has started to come loose. Hi, I've had my HP Envy for just over two years and I'm the only user of the laptop.  About a year ago the left hinge broke through just opening the case - never dropped, not too much force but clearly a defective part.  As the laptop was needed for daily use, I thought I would tolerate the issue through necessity.  However, more recently the gap between the case has become bigger and I'm more concerned about the laptop overheating or developing an even more terminal issue if it isn't fixed. I was shocked to find out how much of widespread this problem is and that I'm not alone in this issue.  My warranty has expired but HP has developed and sold a defective product that needs to be corrected.  I like this laptop and don't want to have a useless 900 laptop.   I look forward to a reponse to resolving this issue. Thanks,
