Inspiron N5110 built-in speakers suddenly no sound

Question: Inspiron N5110 built-in speakers suddenly no sound

Have updated IDT driver but still no joy. Headphones work, all the usual checks ok (not muted, sound not turned down, etcetera) but still NO SOUND from the 5-month-old laptop's speakers. Problem started just a week ago, for no apparent reason - also my power settings were suddenly changed (shutting lid reverted to sleep instead of hibernate, without me making any changes). Seems to be a common problem, but can't find a solution.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Inspiron N5110 built-in speakers suddenly no sound

Dell laptops with HD audio (all models newer than the Inspiron 9300) utilize switching technology in the headphone jack socket, which is somewhat complicated. In addition to the usual mechanical parts, the jack also uses current & impedance-sensing techniques to trigger software configuration and switching (to send the audio signal to the speakers). Sometimes the laptops with these jacks develop this combination of symptoms: * Speakers don't work and are not muted or deselected * Headphone jack does work * Reinstalling audio driver does not help * Audio test in Dell Diagnostics passes * On models with 2 headphone jacks, one may be "checked" in the control panel as if in use * Sometimes but not always, a very gentle wiggle of a plug in the jack will get it to resume normal functioning, at least temporarily. That combination of symptoms means that the sense pin in the jack is not working for some reason. Failure of the sense pin results in the computer behaving like there is always a plug in the jack. The software switch that should route audio to the speakers does not get triggered. There are 3 ways to confirm that you have a failed sense pin:1. Check for the combination of symptoms that I listed. If you have all of them then it is pretty certain you have the failed sense pin. Note that when you run the audio tests in Dell Diagnostics you should hear audio through the speakers. That is the opposite result from what one would expect. But note that if you do not hear the audio through the speakers during the tests then there is some other hardware problem, not a bad sense pin.2. Replace the headphone jack. If that fixes the problem that confirms that you had a failed sense pin. The part is covered by your hardware warranty. The Inspiron N5110 I/O circuit board with audio jacks is also available from http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=10296
Note that if you have a failed sense pin replacing the motherboard is not a solution because the jack is not on the MB.3. Restore the laptop to its original factory configuration. This is called PC Restore in XP and Factory Image Restore in Vista. If the speakers still don't work after PC/Factory Image Restore and you have the combination of symptoms listed above, that is a definite confirmation of a failed sense pin.***********************************************************************************************************How to Run the Audio Tests in Dell DiagnosticsThese interactive audio tests are designed to narrow down the problem to either the software or hardware. The tests are independent of Windows and drivers, meaning it doesn't matter if those are working correctly or not. To run Dell Diagnostics1. Restart the computer and tap the f12 key as soon as it starts to boot up .2. Select 'Diagnostic' from the boot menu. The computer will run its pre-boot assessment tests (PSA) before Dell Diagnostics starts. During the PSA you will hear some tones through the system speaker but this does not adequately test the audio hardware. Dell Diagnostics plays an instrumental piece of music complete with drums, so if you only hear some tones then you have only run the PSA.3. Dell Diagnostics should open after the PSA tests, or you should see an option to open it. If you have ever reformatted your entire hard drive then Dell Diagnostics will no longer be there as an option. In that case run it from the Drivers and Utilities (Resource) CD if you have one.4. Select 'Custom', then the audio tests.5. The tests will run. You don't need to run all of them. Just check whether or not audio comes through the speakers during the tests. If you hear audio through the speakers during the tests (the tests 'pass') but not after you boot back into Windows, that result means that you have a software problem. Normally the software problem would be in the audio driver, but if you have the rest of the combination of symptoms then the software problem is that the software switching is not working. But it is not working due to a hardware problem -- a failed sense pin. Dell Diagnostics cannot directly detect a failed sense pin. That is why Dell Diagnostics produces an opposite result than what one would expect when there is this particular hardware problem.******************************************************************************************************

My DELL INSPIRON N5110 Windows 10 64 Bit having Crackling Sound Problem on Both Speakers and Headphone. I have already tried twice to format window, uninstall sound drivers and only keeping High Definition Audio native driver only but the problem is not getting rectified. I shown my Laptop to a Mechanic also and he said speakers are ok. So the problem is with Software but yet I am not sure about where is this problem in Software or Hardware? I have also done diagnostic test but everything fine in Test. Please help me with this problem, I am unable to listen music and watch movies. Your Help will be highly appreciated.

I have an N5110 Inspiron. I bought it around 6 years ago. It had a faulty HDD so I had it replaced about 5.5 years ago. It has been working fine since then.
However, it has been making a weird clicking sound from the beginning. It usually occurs when the HDD is idle (the HDD led isn't on). Sometimes it doesn't happen for minutes whereas other times it happens a couple of seconds apart. I was wondering what could this be?
My laptop is getting quite old and currently, I cannot replace it so I want to keep it functional as long as possible. Could this clicking reduce the life-expectancy of my HDD, is it a sign of something faulty? If yes, what can I do to prevent an HDD failure and losing all my files?

Answer:Dell N5110 Inspiron HDD clicking sound

They don't call it click death for nothing.  The drive is trying to recalibrate track zero and isnt finding it. So the drive is likely to die very soon and lose everything.  Drives die, this isn't a fault anymore than the brakes on your car or other mechanical things like tires wearing out from use.

When I first got my PC, the sound quality was absolutely atrocious (no bass present at all) so I did a few tweaks which gave me a bit more bass and some of that low range.
But when I play anything that has low notes or is bass boosted, I hear rumbling sounds from the speakers as if they're broken, and it's just frustrating to listen music on because I'm always having to hear rumbling in the background.
I tried plugging in external speakers, same issue with the rumbling on low notes.

What could be causing the rumbling problem or could it be that my speakers are faulty?

Thanks

It all started some weeks ago, atleast once in a day I would hear some bopping sound from my right speaker. When it started I would restart the computer and it would go away.but two days ago,it started then suddenly my speakers stopped working.I tried connecting my headphones there was still no sound. In just some time after the speakers went mute,i smelt something burning.i suspected it was my speaker so I smelt its location and surely the burning scent was coming from there. Now I am not really sure if my speakers burnt up or its something to do with the drivers. What can I do ? and if my speakers are really burnt, where can I get other ones specifically for my dell inspiron 3542 ? I have tried searching for them here on the official dell website but I don't seem to find them.

I have a Lenovo S10-3 Netbook, running on Win7 starter.

It has been running fine unil a few days ago, when the built in speakers no longer play any sound. Works fine with earphones or exernal speakers, but not internal speakers.

Drivers are all up to date, and audio/sound settings are all set to full.

And according to the speaker and sound card 'properties' - "This device is working properly."

What can i do?

Answer:No sound from built in speakers, but sound from headphones

Do you get sound with the external speakers unplugged?? Usually laptops will disable the built in speakers while external speakers are being used...

Please Help,

I was using the headphone jack to plug into the back of the television for sound for playing videos.  When I unplugged the jack from the computer the built in speakers stopped working.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers.
rebooted mulitple times
shutdown device and took off the battery
all the settings are at default
It appears to be working but nothing  is coming out.
I am using a Dell ultrabook 6430u.
Any thoughts on what I should try next. The laptop has never been dropped and came out of the box new less than a month ago.
Thank you for any support on this issue as I travel and rely on the speakers for conferencing.
Chris

Answer:no sound out of built in speakers 6430u

Hi Chris,
I understand that inbuilt speakers stopped working after you unplugged the audio cable. We truly regret the inconvenience that has been caused to you.
It seems to be an issue with the jack sense pin on the system. You can check this article below which would be helpful in resolving this issue:

Ok I'm either doing something completely stupid or my speakers just do not work.

I have my monitor connected to my gpu via displayport and have the monitor set to default device under sound playback but still no sound. When I try and play some audio I can see the little sound bar move up and down but nothing from the speakers.
Same problem also happens when I plug my headphones directly into monitor.

Every other method works just fine.

I have been using bluetooth speakers with my W520. On a recent trip, away from my bluetooth speakers, I discovered that my built in speakers are not working in regards to music, media player, video playback, etc. Computer sounds still work, but only out of the left speaker.  However there is no playback of any kind. When my bluetooth speakers are turned off or disconnected, the system automatically changes "Speakers  Conexant Smart Audio HD Device" as the default device for playback (in my Playback tab under Sound).  If I play something, I can see a green graph over to the right of the Speakers designated as the default device registering changes as though something is playing, but there is no sound from the speakers.  If I go to Volume Mixer, I see the same thing:  Device:  Speakers is showing the volume at full and WMP is showing that something is playing, but I hear no sound from the speakers.  If I go to configure the built in speakers, I do not hear the test sounds at all. The only other thing I've noticed as a possible clue is that in Control Panel/Hardware and Sound, when I click on Smart Audio, it fails to load.  Instead, I get a notice window reading:  "Failed to Initiate Smart Audio, the Application will now exit." Any ideas?  As inadequate as the built in speakers are, I'd still like to use them when I'm on the road. Busman

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so please feel free to re-direct if necessary.

I have a brand new Toshiba Satellite A665-S9092 laptop that just started exhibiting a weird problem: I get an occasional crackling, popping sound from whatever I plug into the headphone jack. I've tried with my Bose speakers and two separate sets of headphones. It seems to occur whenever the hard drive is accessed: when the computer is idle, I don't hear a peep, but whenever I e.g. refresh my browser or open a program, it starts crackling. The odd thing is that I don't get this from the built-in laptop speakers - only from whatever I plug into the headphone jack.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? One of the main uses of this machine is playing music so this problem is putting a serious crimp in my enjoyment...

(Extra info: under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" in the Device Manager I have 4 instances of nVidia High Definition Audio, and 1 instance of Realtek High Definition Audio. Checking "driver update" tells me the drivers are up to date. Not sure why there are 4 instances of the nVidia HD Audio.)

I went into the Sound in Control panel and made sure Windows Default was selected. Tried to test the sounds there with no luck.
I checked for updates on my sound driver.

Would it be possible to set up my laptop so that I can get kind of surround sound using the built-in speakers along side my 2.1 speakers? I only have 2 jacks, 1 mic/line in and 1 speaker jack.

I did try poking around in a few places but could not find anything.

I'm not necessarily looking for perfect 3D sound, stereo would be great to. I just think doing this may maximize the sound range.

Thanks in advance

Hi there.

I have just purchase a new laptop (L650-OED) which is running windows 7 - 32 bit.

The in-built speakers make a crackling noise and only work intermittently. When you adjust the volume up or down they work for a few seconds and then cut out.

I have tested the sound through the headphone jack which is working perfectly. I have also reinstalled the device driver (Conexant HD Audio 4.119.0.61) but it has not made any difference.

Is there anything else I can try or is this a warranty issue?

Appreciate any advice.

Regards
Pete

Answer:Satellite L650-OED In-built speakers crackling and intermittent sound

>I have tested the sound through the headphone jack which is working perfectly.
Hmm?. for this would mean that this has nothing to do with the sound card or with the sound driver but with the faulty speakers.

Therefore I recommend asking an technician for an notebook check? possibly the speakers needs to be replaced. If warranty is valid, then everything should be done free of charge.

Hi, I've been having trouble with sound for a while:

The in-built speakers play sound perfectly, but when I plug headphones into the side jack, everything is silent.

The system is detecting when I plug/unplug the headphones - the systray "Realtek HD Audio Manager" gives notifications when I do, and the system volume changes accordingly. The sound is also not muted anywhere. I am 100% certain that the problem lies with Windows and not the port/headphones because they work fine in Linux.

Things I have checked/tried:
- sound is not muted anywhere
- from Device Manager, uninstalling/reinstalling various versions of Realtek HD Audio drivers - now using R270
- booting with the headphones plugged in and with them not plugged in initially makes no difference
- BIOS is already latest version
- sound is fine in Linux, so I'm pretty sure the hardware has no faults

Once in a blue moon, it will work, but I have not worked out how to replicate this success.

If anyone knows anything that may help fix this, I would be grateful.

Answer:ASUS N53Jg, Win7 - Sound from in-built speakers, none from headphones

Hello Pete and welcome to TSF,

First thing I would like you to do is perform a "Clean Boot" and try your headphones. What we are trying to accomplish with the "Clean Boot" is to either implicate or rule out a third-party process or service from causing the issue.

To perform a clean boot...
Close out any programs you are using and save any unsaved work.
Click the Windows button.
Type msconfig.
Select the Services tab.
Select Hide all Microsoft Services.
Select Disable All.
Select the Startup tab.
Select Disable All.
Click Apply then OK.
The system will prompt you to reboot... Select Yes.

Test your headphones and post back with the results.

Hi guys,

I have a strange problem. My speaker was working alright in my Windows XP Professional SP2. Suddenly, I did not hear any sounds. I tried all possible combination to fix the issue. The following covers almost all of them.

Check the device manager for any driver missing issues / yellow exclammation marks, mute button enabled for volume controls and also checked the BIOS if the audio device is enabled.
Finally, checked the speakers in another machine and it worked. Since it was an on-board sound card (Mercury Board - KOBP4M266A), I thought the issue could be with the sound card itself and purchased a NEW 4 channel PCI sound card. Installing that (Windows installed its drivers automatically - It was a "Crystal Soundfusion Audio device" driver) did not resolve my problem.

Now, when I see under the device manger, both the devices (AC'97 audio device from VIA technologies, which came with my mother board) and this one (Crystal Sound fusion audio device from the PCI sound card) both are listed and status shows as "Working properly" and "No conflicts". I also checked my PCI sound card in another machine and sound was heard alright.

I don't know where could be the issue with sound in my system.
Can some one help me resolve this quickly, as I have been having this issue for over 2-3 weeks now and tried all forums in the net, but not found a solution that fits my case.

Thanks for your inputs in resolving this.

Cheers,
RSM.

So briefly, my processor has 6 jacks in the back and 2 in the front to connect my speakers to. In the back there is a Green, Pink x2, Black, Grey and Blue Jacks. In the front there is a Pink and Grey Jack.

Now I have two sets of identical speakers and having only one Green jack I connected them both to the green using an adapter. So basically the same sound came from all the speakers.

Then yesterday I decided to try make it more surround sounding and I found out that the Black jack is for some sort of other speakers. So I connected them, and I set my sound options to quadrophonic. And it worked beautifully. Then I had to leave and I turned of my computer.

When I turned it back on, the speakers plugged into the green one still worked while the speakers plugged into the Black jack don't work anymore. I tried switching them around and the speakers that were plugged into the green one still worked while the black didn't. So its not something with the speakers.

I set defaults to everything and retraced my steps but nothing works. When I do the test, I set it to quadrphonic and it shows 4 speakers, then it tests each one and the plugged into the green ones make a sound, the others don't. What went wrong?

I'm working in Windows Vista Ultimate and Ihere is some info about my pc.

Hey guys, problem is basically the one in the title.
I followed a guide in a youtube video about a month ago where you go to your playback devices menu; make the speakers the default device; go onto the "Stereo mix" properties on the "recording" tab; go to listen; change "playback through this device" to my headset and check the box above that says "listen to this device".
Under the sound tab there were now two speakers to change volume with; my actual speakers, and my headset.
This worked perfectly and for a month and few days I have been able to have sound coming from both the headset and the speakers with no issue until today (the two speaker options in sound has disappeared too).
Today I turned on my computer and noticed there was absolutely no sound (from the headset). Not playing games, not watching videos or anything. The only time the headset will produce sound is when I press "test" in the settings or when I change the volume slider on the headset itself. The only other time it will produce sound is if I make it the default device but then sound will stop on my speakers, defeating the purpose.
I am baffled as to what has happened as there have been literally no settings changed whatsoever. If anybody has any suggestions or anything I would be very appreciative. Thank you.
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, to no avail.

Hi,
Dell Inspiron 3542
Windows 10 Home 64bit (1703)
I was watching (and hearing), videos with the laptop at rest on top of my desk and suddenly sound went mute. I check all the typical culprits (Volume Mixer, Playback Devices, Dell Audio Sound Manager, downloaded and reinstalled latest driver, etc), but no sound. Sound does work with headphones and when I insert them the system automatically detects them and adjust volume. When I remove them the system quickly sense that and adjust the volume. So I came here and read Jimco's FAQ. Followed all the recommendations and ran the pre-boot assessment test. Sadly I can not hear the 8 tones. So now, what are my options to fix the problem?

Answer:No sound suddenly on my dell inspiron 1545

The internal laptop speakers are INOP?

Go into Device Manager, expand "Sound..." and uninstall ALL devices.

Reboot the system.

Check audio.

Update drivers - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19

Is Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed?

I've had my Dell Inspiron 24-7459 computer for about a month.  Sound was coming from the internal speakers but now the sound no longer works.  I've tried the volume, mute features with no luck.  Should I be trying something different?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 24-7459 has no sound coming from speakers

tiger28the internal speakers
Hello. Did you plug in headphones or external speakers to check whether audio is coming through the headphone jack?
If audio is coming through the jack but not the internal speakers, run the ePSA audio test to see if the speakers have failed.
If there is no audio from either the speakers or jack then the problem is not the speakers, so try reinstalling the audio driver. Open the Device Manager and expand the Sounds...Controllers section. Right click on Realtek HD Audio and select to uninstall. Do not put a check mark in the option to delete the files. When you reboot, Windows will re-install the Realtek driver by rebuilding it from the files. The point of doing that is the rebuilt driver will have the default configuration which will correct any misconfiguration issue.
If that doesn't fix it the next step would be to install a fresh copy of the driver from the support page.

I just bought this Inspiron laptop and it has been great. I noticed that there are three speakers under the laptop. 1 is long located by the hinges away from the user while the other 2 are smaller and to the left and right closer to the user.
Recently, I was watching a movie and found myself turning the volume all the way up because the sound is very dim. I turned it upside-down and noticed only 1 speaker was working, the front left. Because the sound was up all the way on the audio settings, this was causing a very loud pitch to be emitted when listening to anything.
Does anyone else have similar problems? I am thinking about taking the laptop in to get it fixed. Before I do, I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions based on their own experience or whether I should check into software issues (i.e. missing a driver).

Answer:Inspiron 15 5000 2-in-1. Underside speakers not putting out sound.

Hello. the best bet is to just reinstall the audio driver. if doing that doesn't make the sound come out right, then get it repaired.
If you want a link to the driver, reply back with the model of the laptop (Inspiron 5568, 5577 etc. All Inspiron 15" 5000s have 55 in the 1st 2 digits of the 4 digit name), and the operating system if it is not Win10.

X220 tablet (about 2.5 yrs old, out of warranty) was working completely fine last night; this morning, no sound is coming from the laptop, either through speakers or through headphones (audio jack).  I am, however, able to get sound through a bluetooth-connected speaker. I had hoped this was a software issue.  Tried uninstalling/installing all sound devices, updating BIOS, updating drivers, system restore to previous date, rebooting a million times, etc.  No joy. When I run the sound troubleshooter, it says that no speaker, headset, or headphone appears to be plugged in.  The sound icon has a little red circle/white X next to it.  When I try to plug in headphones, nothing happens -- does not seem to detect the event.  When I press the mute and volume buttons on the tablet, no response. Also, under Device Manager -> Sound, video and game controllers, it lists only "Bluetooth Hands-free Audio" and "Intel Display Audio".  I don't think either of these is the normal X220 audio driver, is it?  What else should be there?  I downloaded the Conexant Audio Software from Lenovo's site (this is what came up when I searched for audio drivers for the X220 tablet), and tried to install it, but halfway through, it said the install failed because it couldn't locate the device for the driver. This sounds like it's a hardware problem -- any way to verify?  Also, which piece of hardware exactly?  Is it the sound card ... Answer:X220 tablet - sound suddenly stopped working from speakers and headphone (but not bluetooth)

If it doesn't appear in the device manager, it sounds to me like the sound chip (codec) or some support chip has died. I'm not sure how exact you want the answer to be. I think on that model, the codec is a Conexant 20672. If I am correct, the normal fix is to replace the motherboard. Many x220 machines are still under warranty. If yours is, now would be a good time to use it. You can check here:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-service/warranty-status/default.page?

Hello all,
I have a Dell Inspiron 7559 laptop that I bought about a month ago.  When I hook it up to my external speakers and start up a game such as WoW, the sound that comes out of the speakers sounds awful... like it's a way lower bitrate than it shoudl be, missing depth and fullness... almost as if it were coming out of one of those old pc speakers.
If I unplug the speakers, let the OS realize they were disconnected, then plug them back in again, it works fine.
Anyone see this before?

It's as if it doesn't detect the headphones. It says my Realtek audio driver is up-to-date. When I go to manage audio devices, there's only one device listed called "Speakers / Headphones", so I don't know if when I plug my headphones in it's supposed to detect it separately. I've tried multiple headphones, all of which work with other devices. Also, there are two drivers listed under "sound, video, and game controllers". One is Realtek Audio and the other is Intel(R) Display Audio. Should I reinstall them both? This is a new laptop that I got to replace my old laptop which had (different) sound problems, so I'm very frustrated and at my wit's end, help is appreciated, thank you.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15: Headphones not working, sound comes through speakers when plugged in

First, make sure the headphone cable is fully inserted...
Then you show get a popup to allow you to select the device if you are using a Combined Audio Port.
If you aren't getting the popup, check the task manager to see if on the Startup Tab a Waves MaxxAudio entry is set to enabled.
If you look at the processes tab you should have two entries for Waves, one blue square and one green circle.

Hello. I replied to your other post yesterday.
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/20000413
dejibytealso my left speaker had stopped working before re installation, and the audio jack has a bit broken off exposing the metal stick(i dont know maybe this is a problem)
That information wasn't in your first thread. That might be why there is no audio through the headphone jack.

In light of this additional information, it is possible that you have 2 issues: broken headphone jack, and an interruption in the audio signal to the speakers. I understand that you reseated the speakers, but the ePSA test proves that the signal is still not getting through, or they have failed.
If the laptop is no longer under warranty, all I can suggest is that reseat the speaker cable again.
As for the headphones, I don't think that the Inspiron 3542 has a jack circuit board, so your best option may be to get a usb audio jack. It only costs a few dollars on Amazon. Don't know about the availability in your area.

i have downloaded the right realtek drivers, and made sure to switch between generic and others,

Hello. Failure of the ePSA audio test means hardware failure -- probably just a coincidence about formatting. The ePSA tests do not have anything to do with Windows -- would work even with no operating system on the laptop.
dejibyteafter i removed the speakers and reinstalled to check shaky connection still no sound.
The fact that no audio through headphones either means there is more wrong than the speakers. If the audio chip were functioning correctly, should hear through headphones even if speakers were dead. If the laptop is still under warranty, contact tech support.
If not under warranty, you can still get audio through headphones or external speakers by getting an inexpensive usb audio jack. A usb jack has its own self-contained audio chip and does not use the one on the motherboard. The only drawback is that a usb jack cannot play through the laptop's internal speakers.

Hi guys!
When I turn off the laptop by using shut down or hibernate there's a loud white noise in the external  active speakers which are connected via audio/jack cable.. Using my old laptop for 5 years, that never happened. What could be the solution to the problem? Aside from turning off the speakers - I always need them on so that I can use them with Chromecast audio connected to Aux-in.

Hi all, just a quick fyi for anyone wanting to install Windows 10 on the N5110 like me. Although it is not 'supported' by Dell, it doesn't mean you can't do it. Just that you're on your own if you break something. Kinda like when I replaced the 'none-user-replaceable' HDD with an SSD. Currently, my 'nag screen' tells me I can't upgrade just yet and looks like this:

I wanted to see if it would run anyway, so used the Media Creation Tool to create a USB installer and went for it. I'm pleased to say that hardware-wise, everything works fine! Sound, USB, webcam, integrated and discrete graphics, VGA and HDMI outputs, WiFi, CD drive, eSATA port, Bluetooth are all working which is a minor miracle.
However, I was unable to get Windows 10 to activate. I kept getting an error saying that the product key was invalid. This was using both the key written on the bottom of my machine, and the one I pulled from the registry on Win7 using Belarc (other tools are available) which for some reason where different from each other.
So for now, I have rolled back to Win 7 and I will stay there until the normal migration route works (via Windows Update). Rolling back from Win10 to Win 7 is incredibly easy and takes three clicks for anyone wondering. Let's hope there is an official way to do this properly soon!

I formatted and went back to Windows 7 for her till I can research it some more. Not sure why the sound wouldn't work.I would love to try it again but don't want to have to format and go back to 7 again if the sound fails again.Any thoughts?
(Oh an my keys were different from what Belarc said too. Odd)

Ever since the last Windows update (running Windows 10) my laptop has said it isn't charging. I've been using it regularly and the battery power just stays exactly where it is. When I unplug and use it, it drains like it normally would, and when I plug back in, it just maintains whatever percentage it got down to.

Do I need a new battery or AC adapter? Help please

Answer:Inspiron 15R N5110 Says it isn't charging but it is

I like to suggest you try the steps in the video below for a possible fix.
www.youtube.com/watch

I also like to suggest you check the status of the AC adapter and battery in the BIOS. Please follow steps below

A) Power off computer (make sure AC adapter connected to computer and battery as well).
B) Power on computer, quickly tap the F2 key continuously. You should be in the BIOS screen.

In the BIOS, go to the Advanced tab and look for battery health, it should say "This Battery Is Performing Normally'. If there's any other message, it mean the battery is faulty and need a replacement. Look under the main screen and look for AC adapter type. If the adapter says Unknown or None then it's a problem with adapter

More and more often (almost every day, now), my Inspiron 15R N5110 will freeze and, sometime, get a blue screen, and shut down completely. Windows 7 is up to date. BIOS not updated (5 years, now, I think).
Should I update the BIOS to A11 (the last one) ?
Any concern with Win-7 ?
Any concern with AVG (virus protection) ?
Any clue or your experience wil be appreciated,

Answer:Inspiron N5110 Lanptop does not turn on

Unplug the system and verify that the LED on the AC adapter is ON before you plug in the notebook end.
If there's no LED on the adapter, replace the unit with a new OEM Dell adapter.
Remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.
Leave the battery out - if the system will start up on AC only but not with the battery installed, the battery is bad.
If the system still won't power up on AC only after the above reset, the mainboard is bad.  This is now a 6-7 year old system -- likely better replaced than repaired (the cost of a mainboard replacement isn't insignificant, and investing several hundred dollars into an older notebook likely makes little economic sense).

System should take both i5 or i7;  that said, upgrading the CPU will void the warranty.
A mid-range i5 will run about $250;  an i7-quad, about $600.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 that when turned on will beep 8 times.
The display LCD will turn on as well as power button light, but no Dell splash screen or anything else. Just 8 beeps over and over and over until I turn it off.
I have tried to boot the laptop up with and without the battery pack, with a different power convertor, I have tried to re-seat the RAM sticks and none of that works.
I tried to boot into the Diagnostics with F12, but the beeps start before I get a chance.
Does anyone have any ideas or know what the 8 beeps means on this model laptop?

Answer:Inspiron N5110 - 8 Beeps at startup

Hi IntecIT,
The Dell Inspiron N5110 might emit a series of beeps during start-up if the LCD cannot display errors or problems. The 8 beeps on this model indicate an LCD failure. However, I suggest you to try connecting a known good external monitor and check if it works (If available).

So i've had this laptop for years and i was wishing to upgrade the CPU the RAM and possibly put a SSD in it my main questions are

I just want to be sure the RAM supported on this is 1333 MHz SODIMM DDR3?
I have an i3 processor in it and i want to upgrade it to an i5 processor which would i have to get?
Is there a specific SSD i need to drive?

Answer:Inspiron 15R N5110 Upgrading Questions

The system will likely run with DDR-1333 but the speed of the RAM will be 1066 with an i5 CPU (the memory speed is set by the CPU).
Only the second-generation i5 CPUs are supported - nothing newer (example:  i5-2410M).
Yes, you can install a 2.5" SATA SSD - but before you begin that process, be sure you realize that replacing a drive on this model requires an almost complete tear-down of the system - it's attached to the bottom of the system board, which must be removed from the system to change a drive.

Dell Inspiron N5110 running Windows 7.
When not in use I have to remove the battery or else the thing turns itself on within a few seconds of shutting down or just having the battery inserted.
It DOESN'T do this when the charger is connected to the laptop and mains electricity. If the charger is connected to the laptop but not to the mains then the laptop will also turn itself on.
Any bright ideas?

Hello, So I have got a Dell inspiron N5110 with an i7 intel core in 2013, and I don't remember opening it, falling from me or even giving it to a child. Yesterday I noticed that it is overheating through a tempreature reader software, I just did this test because I noticed it heated only after ten minutes from opening it; anyways, I noticed that it reaches 81 degrees celcius in just 10 minutes from opening it and this was very dangerous, so I tried to fix it by doing the following:-
1- Decreasing the "Maximum proccesor state".2- Shutting down the laptop and removing SD cards, USBs, the battery and the charger and pressing the power button for 20 seconds.3- I scanned for malwares using "Malware bytes 12" and viruses using "ESET NOD32 Antivirus 9" and the laptop was absolutely maleware and virus FREE.4- I ran the CPU diagnostics and I didn't have any errors.5- I tried buying a new charger.6- I tried using the laptop without the battery.
And after all of these attempts, nothing happens, so I want anybody to try and help me out.
Thank You,

my lap top doesn't want to turn on i have my ac adapter pluged in it showes a light on the battery but it just doesn't want to turn on. i tried disconnecting the battery and ac adapter pressing the power button and connecting them again but it still won't turn on. please help

Answer:dell inspiron n5110 won't turn on

Remove the battery -- if the system will power up on AC only, the battery has failed and will need to be replaced.
If the system won't power up on AC only, disconnect the adapter and remove the battery.  Hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory modules.  Then try powering up again.  If the system still won't power on, the mainboard is bad -- on a system of this age, given the cost to replace the mainboard -- you're better off shopping for a replacement system.

Hi all.
Not a discussion as such, but a post to help others out who may be thinking of upgrading the HDD in their N5110 to an SSD.
My original system details

Inspiron N5110
i5-2410M 2.30GHz
8GB RAM (upgraded from 4GB)
Nvidia GeForce GT 520M
500GB 5200rpm HDD

How I went about it
I decided to buy a 500GB Samsung 850 EVO to replace the standard hdd. The drive arrived with a CD containing the Samsung migration tool and Samsung Magician. I also bought a eSATA cable to do the data migration.
I conected the new drive to the eSATA port and tried to use the migration tool. I had to transfer 370GB from the old disk to the new, after 2 hours, the tool reported that it would take a further 8 hours to complete the migration! I gave up on that, and followed the instructions here using Clonezilla. The whole migration then took only 1.5 hours. I ignored the tweaks at the bottom, the Samsung Magician software takes care of that for you.
Once the drive cloning was complete, I followed this YouTube video to disassemble the laptop, and replace the HDD with the new SSD. Once reassembled he laptop booted flawlessly :)
The original drive is SATA2 (3GB/s), but the motherboard supports SATA3 (6GB/s) so you will get the best performance out of the new SSD. Bear in mind, that both the connector for the DVD drive and the eSATA connector only support SATA2 (and I think the DVD connector does not support AHCI either) so you must install the drive internally in the original slot to get the maxi... Nice! I'm sure this will help out some others.
Just to be safe I'd advise making Dell Backup and Recovery media from the original HDD if you ever want to revert back to the factory install:

The creation of recovery media with Dell Backup and Recovery may not work on a lconed drive.

Hey guys!!! Plz hlp me wid dis stuff. I'm stucked in making HDD Partition in my Dell Inspiron N5110. There was 2 Partitions of HDD during the tym of puchase my laptop. The retailer too said me dat it was unable to make a 3rd partition. So I tried to make a partition by my own. I tried in 2 ways: 1) During Boot time by booting 4m win7 DVD & another by going through the disc management (diskmgmt.msc). During the tym of Boot the Unallocated space remaining 4 the 3rd partition has it's New option inactive. Therefore I failed to make a partition there. 2) Inside the disk management, 1st I shrinked my Volume1 (My C:\ drive of 135 GB) to nearly 77 GB and the rest 58 GB was unallocated. When I tried to make a new Volume (Unallocated Space>Right-click>New Volume) It says me dat "You cannot create a New Volume in this unallocated space because the disk already contains the maximum number of partitions" .Plz hlp me. What 2 do?

Answer:Dell inspiron N5110 HDD Partition

This is very interesting.

I would recommend completely formatting the HDD. Remove everything. Then, use an advanced partition editor (gParted or Partition Magic) to create the partitions you need.

Backup your data first, though....

I am trying to reinstall windows 7 on my dell inspiron n5110 but I need to download the dell windows 7 ISO but I can't find it?  Its not available anywhere on the Dell site? How can I get it?

Answer:Need Dell Windows 7 ISO for Inspiron n5110

It's not downloadable.  Your best bet is probably to avail yourself of the free upgrade to Windows 10 at this point (you can get version TH2 from Microsoft and use your 7 product key that's in the battery compartment to activate it).
It's at this point unlikely Dell will ship out an end of life OS  like Windows 7.

I have had my Inspiron 15R N5110 for just under 2 years now but lately, quite often when moved even slightly my laptop just shuts down immediately, it doesn't matter whether I have much running or not. I've looked through Event Viewer for the periods when it's cut off but there is no errors or messages related to the shutdown. After each time it shuts down this way, the laptop will not power on again until I remove the battery, unplug and replug the charger cable and turn it on, then insert the battery again once the laptop is running. If I don't follow this process then it just won't turn on again, even if left for an hour. Is my battery going faulty or is it something else? I should mention that the battery charges fine and that during the shutdowns, the charger cable is still plugged into the laptop.

Answer:Inspiron 15R N5110 Possible Battery Problem

Hi spectre289,
It seems that this is a hardware issue, occurring due to a loose connection for power button assembly. You may check all the connections are proper. Please refer to the system Owner’s Manual, you may refer to the link: http://bit.ly/11R8yLX.
If the system is covered under warranty, you may provide me the Service Tag and the name as it appears on the account via private message (click my username and then click Start Conversation) so I may access your records and we will take it from there.
If the system is not covered under warranty and you are residing in the US, you may contact dell spares at 1-800-372-3355 or you may contact a local technician.
Please feel free to reply for any further queries. I will be glad to assist you.

Hi there. I have Dell Inspiron N5110 (i5-2410M 2.3GHz, nVidia 525M 1Gb RAM, 4 Gb PC3-10600 RAM (now upgraded - 8 Gb)).Can I change my CPU to a more powerful? i7-2670QM 2.2GHz or i7-2720QM, for example?Regards, Lorraine.

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 CPU Upgrade

In most cases, no - you cannot.  The systems that ship with i7 CPUs have a different system board and require a more powerful AC adapter.  You may be able to run a faster i5, but the i7s usually require a different system board.
Upgrading the CPU will also void your warranty.

How do you update the BIOS on an Inspiron N5110 without a charger?  I have downloaded the installer N5110A11.EXE from Dell, and run it from an elevated command prompt using the line
N5110A11.EXE /forceit
but each time I do so a message box appears with the text "Error: unknown command".  Is there a different command syntax that works with this BIOS installer?
Background
I have an Inspiron N5110 that is not charging the battery and will not run off the charger.  I have tried several chargers that work with other Inspirons.  I have replaced the power jack board, and that did not fix the problem.  Reflashing the BIOS seems to be the only remaining approach to take.
Note that the laptop is running Windows 7.

Hi all,

My troubles began about a week ago when I needed to print some forms and that I had had it with my laptop not printing (despite recognizing my printer and even allowing it to print a test page from within the printer maintenance software). So I began fiddling...well now everything is messed up.

A description of symptoms:
1) My sound has a 'delay' for lack of a better word. Say an alert pop up comes up, it is 1-2 seconds later when the alert sound plays.

2) Flash games are severely delayed and I keep getting shockwave errors stalling my Firefox. I am also getting the occasional flash plug in crash notice (even if not attempting to play games)

3) I am able to watch videos/listen to music on my computer with minimal interference, but cannot use Spotify streaming as the sound has gone wonky (very high pitched digitized, skippy, etc.)

4) There is a delay between the time I click a button and it actually reacts, so where opening firefox used to take a few seconds, it now takes half a minute. Switching tabs used to be instant, it now has to think about it.

5) CPU is running hot, too hot. I borrowed my fiance's laptop pad with a fan and thankfully it brought it down from 74C to under 69C, but the fan is still running constantly. He's bringing home a can of air to give it a proper cleaning tonight (as the one I had only gave me one quick spray before running out). It has always run a bit hot, but this constant running is new to this we... Read more

Hi,
I have a dell inspiron N5110 and i am planning on upgrading the ram modules which are rated at 1333hz. i would like to know if the motherboard can support ram modules at higher frequencies, if yes, how much of a performance boost can i expect.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Faster modules may work but won't increase the speed - 1333 MHz is the limit for memory speed in this model.

I'm trying to do a factory reset on my Dell laptop. I didn't receive a CD when I bought it so I tried doing it through the BIOS. I hit F8 repeatedly and got to the repair your computer screen. I selected that option and then it shows a screen that says Windows loading files. Unfortunately, after that it just freezes once the loading bar is full. Then after maybe 10 minutes it goes to resuming Windows normally (I assume a time out of some sort). Is there another way to do a factory reset? Like I said I don't have the CD because it didn't come with it. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong? Thanks

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 Factory Reset Help

Hi yuanaug,
Dell does not ship any factory recovery discs for systems. There is a ‘Dell DataSafe Local Backup’ application installed in the system wherein you could create recovery discs. Please follow the steps below to restore the computer to factory state.

Turn on the computer, after the Dell Logo appears and then disappears repeatedly press the <F8> key until you see the Advanced Boot Options menu.
From the Advanced Boot Options highlight Repair Your Computer with the arrow keys and press <ENTER>.
Click ‘Next’ and login to your administrator account on the computer. The administrator account is the account created the first time the computer was turned on.
Click ‘Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options’ and follow the prompts provided.

If the above steps are not working and your system is booting into the operating system then follow the steps in the link given below to create a factory recovery discs and use the discs to restore the computer to factory state.
http://dell.to/rXS9BO
If the computer is not booting into the operating system then I am afraid you will have to perform manual operating system reinstallation from the operating system discs.
Please let me know if this helps.

Until recently my Inspiron 15R (running Windows 7) would not allow a Windows 10 upgrade.  It would say that Dell had not certified this device with Win 10 due to BIOS issues.  About a week ago I had to do a complete "bare metal" Windows re-install so took that opportunity to download all the latest drivers and the latest BIOS.  I didn't think any more about it until today when it popped up and asked if I wanted to upgrade to Windows 10.  I figured I would get the same "can't upgrade" message but decided to go ahead and try.  To my surprise it downloaded and installed Windows 10.
However: I can boot and log into Windows 10 and can see my desktop for about 5 to 10 seconds.  Then the screen goes black.  I can see (and move) the mouse pointer but nothing other than the mouse pointer shows on the screen.
I figured it must be an incompatible video driver (although as I said, it does display the desktop just fine for a few seconds), so decided to boot into SAFE mode to see if I could resolve the issue.  But the exact same thing happens when I boot into SAFE mode.  I see the desktop for a few seconds and then it goes black, with nothing other than the mouse pointer being displayed.
Any thoughts on a resolution?

Hello,

After re-installing Windows 7 on my 1,5 years old Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop, my laptop won't shut down anymore.
The laptop has every symptom of shutting down, it will do all of the updates when there are, the screen will go black after 'shutting down'.
But the laptop will always be making those 'think' noises. Also there are some of the lights still on. After it gets in this 'state', I'm also unable to turn on my laptop again.

It will turn off when I push on my off button for like 5-10 seconds.
But that won't be too good for my laptop doing that all the time...

Now, my laptop will get in sleeping state, but than again.. I can't wake him up again.

Edit: I forgot to say, since a few days, it will just 'turn off' out of nowhere.

Is there anyone who experienced this before, or who can just help me out?
The nice Dell Support won't help me in any other way then by using the phone, but that doesn't seem like a perfect way of solving a problem in my opinion, therefore I'm asking your help.

Hope you get this, my English aint too good.

Thanks,
