AC power adapter problem in dell inspiron n5110 - screen inside

Question: AC power adapter problem in dell inspiron n5110 - screen inside

Hello!I've problem with my dell inspiration n5110 laptop. At the beginning there was sometimes a screen like below, but now I've it on every turn on. I haven't changed anything in BIOS, so it could be the power adapter problem? Which one should I buy to test it?I have all original parts in my laptop.I'm little surprised about this 130W Adapter. Could I buy dell adapter with params 19,5V 4,62A 90W or should I look at the 130W?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: AC power adapter problem in dell inspiron n5110 - screen inside

I have a problem with my Dell inspiron n5110 laptop. After turning it on I have a message like below:
All parts in my laptop are original (from Dell). I think that could be a problem with power adapter or with battery. My battery:
What should I do with it? Change AC power adapter? Update BIOS/change BIOS settings? Thanks.

Hi Saswata,
Please provide following details:
1. Did you buy the battery from Dell or is it a third party battery?2. Did you perform any hardware change apart from the battery?3. Is it an issue that has started after replacing the battery?

I have a white screen upon startup. I was able to use my laptop when plugging the VGA cable in the back to an external monitor but that only works with a few tries.
I notice if i put my laptop on sleep for less than 2 hours the external monitor works.
Any time longer and I have to start the process of removing and inserting the plug and playing with my external monitor so it can detect a signal, it usually takes a few tries and a few minutes.
The white screen is always on my laptop throughout the process and even when the external monitor works.
Just determining if i should replace me screen or ribbon video cable or check my connection to my vga cable or could it be my motherboard.

any help or direction is appreciated.
Thank you!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 screen problem - white screen & external monitor works if I jiggle the plug

We need to isolate if the issue is with the LCD or the video card. So, turn off the system - press and hold the "d" + power key to turn it back on - this should initiate the LCD built in self test. You should see a screen with solid changing colors and the system would beep. If you see this - the LCD is fine. If you do not see the colors changing - then repeat the step again - but this time - swivel the LCD back and forth and see if there is any display. If the display is intermittent then the LCD cable needs reseating/replacing.
Also, turn off the system and press and hold the "fn" key + power button to turn it back on - wait for a few minutes. If you do not see any display, the system should start beeping. Count the number of beeps per cycle. At any point if you see the screen with solid colors changing - the LCD is fine. The issue is with the video card/motherboard. If do not see the changing colors - then we would suspect the LCD.
Test the system with another VGA cable for the external monitor.
If the system is under warranty, then please send me the service tag of the system and your contact details through a private conversation. Or you could use twitter - @dellcares - we can DM through twitter and help you fix the issue.
Keep us updated.

When I try to put my Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop into sleep mode, the screen goes dark and it looks like it's going to sleep. But the power button stays lit, and the two small outer edge lights on the front display stay lit. I can hear the motor whirring too, and it's clear the laptop is actually on and using/losing power. I am unable to get it out of sleep mode. A long press of the power button will get the computer powered up, but I am immediately taken to the "Windows did not shut down correctly" screen, and given the option to start windows normally or in safe mode.

To fix the problem, I've tried doing a system restore to a restore point before the problem started. That didn't fix it. Today I scanned the hard drive, motherboard and various other hardware, and everything passed. I did a virus scan and no threats were found. Any ideas what's going on and what I can do to fix the issue?

Specs for the laptop: Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1, 64 bit, 6 GB RAM, Inter Core i5.

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 does not go into sleep mode, loses power

How long has the problem been going on? If it's within the time you have available System Restore point try rolling it back.

Sleep problems are mostly Display driver issues, so make sure your driver is up to date: First enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) to run all Important and Optional Windows Updates, with reboots, until there are no more when you check..

Then check the Dell Support page for your Tag number to try the latest driver there.

If all available drivers don't work, then work through these Sleep Mode Problems - Vista Forums.

Establish a Clean Boot, check for errors at time of Sleep in logs, utilize System Resources from the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

You can troubleshoot Sleep issues in Power Options by setting Sleep to 1 minute and Hibernate to 2 minutes to observe these timeouts behavior. I'd also try manually Sleeping and Hibernating from the Shut Down button. You want to test Hibernate too because it is an even better method to Sleep.

If all else fails trace the cause by Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums

I went ahead and searched through the forums, but I didn't find anything that may work in my case, so I thought I would ask here.

For the past few months, the battery on the laptop will not charge although it is plugged in correctly - I checked the pin inside the adapter connector, and it is straight as an arrow. Fiddling with it does not fix it at all. I am using the original adapter that came with the laptop. A few weeks ago, I installed the new BIOS, but the problem is still there.

The laptop gets a message during startup that reads
"AC Power Adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect Dell 65W AC Adapter or greater for best system performance. To resolve this issue, try to reset the power adapter."

When the laptop, the battery icon says "plugged in, not charging."

One time, I managed to fix it by unplugging the battery for a while and reinserting it, but after a week or so, it kept happening again.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1521, and it's only 1.5 years old. I understand this may be a battery problem, but those can be rather expensive, and it seems a little soon for the battery to be dying. I'd rather try to rule out anything else before I have to buy another one. I don't have a spare to test it, but is there any other way I can try to figure out what's going on? Or does anyone else have any thoughts on ... Read more

Answer:Dell Inspiron Power Adapter problem

It's almost certainly the battery. Depending how it was cared for, how much it charged/overcharged, and what type it is, it may not be at all unusual for it to quit after a year and a half. Do you know what type it is (Lithium, NiMH, NiCad, etc.)?

It can't be the adapter if it is powering the machine.

What percentage charge does it say the battery has?

I have had my dell inspiron for 5 years now. two years ago, I dropped it and the LCD shattered. I purchased a new LCD from Amazon and took it to a PC repair store nearby. (Fry's Electronics was the first choice but couldn't install the LCD due to liability issues.) I got my computer back and it worked perfectly. Now fast forward a month later and i haven't used it in about 2 weeks. I go to start up and the screen is black, I check the brightness and that didn't seem to be the problem, then i see that the LCD is fine but the backlight is very dim and keeps flickering like a light about to burn out. Could this problem be hardware and a part stopped functioning?(motherboard/inverter I hear are common culprits) Or could this be a software issue?

I plugged in my dead(battery needing charged) laptop only to have the power adapter start making a high pitched whinny sound. The green light will not light up on the box. Any ideas what could be wrong with it? If there is no way to get it back in working order, does anyone know of a cheap and good place to find a new one? And how do I tell if its actually the one I need? My power adapter says its part of the PA 10 Family, It also states 100-240v-1.5a, Output is DC 19.5v 4.62a. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my son watches movies on my laptop and is very upset that I can't get it working. Thank you so much in advance.

Hi -- not sure if this is the right place for this, so apologies if it's not.

I've had my Dell Inspiron 600m for about a year and half, and in the past couple months, the power adapter seems to "shut off". The green indicator light goes out, and my laptop begins to run on battery power. If I unplug the power adapter and plug it back in, it starts working fine again.

The frequency of this seems to vary, and I can't identify any behaviors I'm doing that are associated with this happening. Sometimes, if I leave my laptop unattended for a couple hours, I'll find that the power adapter has shut off and the battery has drained to the point where the laptop has to go into hibernation mode.

What might be causing this? Is it something wrong with the power adapter itself, or something in the motherboard or laptop itself?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Answer:Problem with Dell Inspiron 600m & power adapter

The problem is most likely one of three things. However, I have to ask a two question first!

Do you mean the GREEN light on the AC Adapter or on your Laptop. I am assuming on the AC Adapter for this response.

Do you keep your laptop plugged into the same outlet all of the time? The reason I am asking this is that it could be a bad outlet or the outlet could be damaged and the power supply is simply losing connection at the outlet.

1. Possible outlet problem as in it has a worn plug in and the ac adapter loses contact. This can also happen on a power strip too!

2. Could very well be a failing ac adapter.

3. Could also be caused by the battery.

If #1 is a possibility, try a different wall socket.

If it does it in all sockets, you could remove the battery and plug the AC Adapter into the laptop. It should run without the battery too! This would rule out the battery as being a problem! If the AC Adapter fails without the battery, then it is the AC Adapter. If it works with the battery out, then it is most likely the battery!

Hope this helps!

I am working on a Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop. The computer had a failing hard drive so I dissasembled it and replaced the hard drive. Note that with this model the entire laptop has to be taken apart. The motherboard has to be removed and turned over to where the hard drive is mounted directly to the motherboard.

I originally wrote the following notes that are in italics just to keep my thoughts straight. Then afterwards I discovered that this screen uses an LED backlight.

I replaced the hard drive and found that the screen is now dark. Please also note that I am very careful about static and use all the safety equipment to prevent any damage it may cause. I can direct the video to a remote monitor and everything is fine. The dark screen acts as if the backlight has gone bad or possibly the inverter. You can use a flashlight and see the images on the screen. One thing to note is that I then restored a factory install to the hard drive so that I could run some of the diagnostics that come with the laptop. For instance if you hold down the D key while pressing the power button it goes directly into a video test. The beginning of the test is dark, but when it gets to the color screen tests, such as green, blue, etc. the screen lights up as if nothing was wrong with it. This only lasts until the system is restarted.

I have googled several sites discussing this problem, a few of which stated that all they did was replace the hard drive and had the same thing happen to the... Read more

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 dark screen after HDD replacement

<SOLVED> I Had this problem with a clients computer yesterday. The (western digital 500gb) hard drive was failing so I replaced it with an hgst. Cloned the drives.
An hour or so later the screen suddenly went dim by 50% or more. I thought the screen was going to sleep, but when I moved the mouse and tried FN-Brightness adjustment, nothing happened.

I rebooted and noticed that the screen would dim after the mouse cursor popped up on the screen. This happened every time I rebooted. This made me believe it was a driver, or software driven dimming.
Also, initially the screen would not dim in Safe Mode, but later after a few reboots it just stayed dim, and no longer was bright before the cursor emerged.

Tested the fuse next to the video ribbon cable and it was okay. Checked the ribbon cable connection on both sides. Ok.
I searched through online threads which mostly described this issue arising after HDD change-outs.

So I decided to change the hard drive again but with the same brand (western digital) as the original drive and BAM! fixed. No more dim screen.
Clean install this time.

The Dell N5110 Motherboard must have a glitch with certain hard drives, or hard drive voltages. Try changing the hard drive out before attempting to install a new motherboard.

1. Please perform LCD BIST . Turn off system> Press and hold “D” and turn on the computer. Solid colors will appear on the screen.2. Also, you may check the quality of the display with an external monitor.3. If the video displayed on the external monitor is fine and the issue appears during LCD BIST, LCD assembly needs replacement.

Answer:dell inspiron 15 r n5110 and Hard problem

You need to replace the hard drive, which has failed.
Good news:  the drive will be an inexpensive part to replace (any 2.5" 9.5 or 7 mm SATA notebook hard drive, hybrid drive or solid state drive will work).
Bad news:  this model requires an almost complete tear-down to replace a hard drive.  The procedure is deailed

Hi there, I am using Windows 8 on Dell Inspiron N5110 15R laptop. I had to upgrade my BIOS so as to install and use the most recent operating system, Windows 8. I was Windows 7 user and had to clean install Windows 8. In Windows 7, I was very much familiar with safe mode, but today, when I booted Windows 8 into safe mode (Using PC Settings, Advanced Startup etc.), and I selected "Safe Mode With Networking" on restart, and then a blue Windows logo appears with waiting dots circling, and after that the screen is just black, and even after waiting for quite some time, it is still there, as it "freezed". If you guys know the solution and can help me solve this issue, I'll be very much grateful. Thank you for your time reading this. I look forward to your opinions and suggestions. Thanks.

Hi All,
I am very much frustrating that I have purchased the Dell laptop 15R N5110 three years back. Now the issue is that when we try to start the laptop it start starts beeping of 7 Beeps and then nothing happens after that. The warranty over the laptop has already been expired  and contact to the local laptop repair engineer they told that we need to replace the Motherboard.
Also, In the market there is not the new motherboard available and they provide us the refurbished motherboard which is not trustable to spend the amount of 12000 for this motherboard. Please suggest dell community. What should we need to do.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 : Problem 7 beeps and not start at all

The mainboard is likely the faulty part, as you know.
Given the age of the system, cost of replacing the board and the fact that you'll get at best a 90-day repair warranty, you're likely better off buying a new system -- this one is now on the order of five or more years old -- and therefore not worth repairing.

I have a Dell N5110 with a failed hard drive. I bought a new hard drive, reinstalled Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I then downloaded all the drivers from dell. I followed the Dell recommended install order. After all the drivers are loaded, I go to Device manager and it says I am missing a network controller driver and I am unable to access wireless. I press function + F2 and I can turn on the wireless, but I am unable to add a wireless network.
I have tried numerous network drivers from the dell site - doing a win reinstall before trying a different driver, but none are working. What am I doing wrong?
I have reformatted the machine again (for the 5th time) and I have no drivers currently installed. Where do I go from here?

Answer:Dell Inspiron Model !5R N5110 Running windows 7 64 Bit..Laptop Battery Problem

Almost always it is the battery. The test is to try another battery. * Eventually you need another battery anyway. The average life of laptop batteries is about 2 years for many users. * Yes, there are testers for laptop batteries. Such a tool for commercial use costs more than  a new battery. You can use a common mufti meter, but you need a new battery to use as a reference. Sooner or later you have to buy a battery, even to prove the problem is the motherboard. You don't want it to be the motherboard.

This morning I woke up to see blue flashes coming from my office at home. My cat had eaten through the cord BETWEEN my LAPTOP and it's POWER BRICK. Fortunately the cat had also pulled the cord free of the computer - and the power brick itself seems to be in good working order.

Unfortunately the cat was still alive and probably hadn't been taught much of a lesson.

I took one look at the cable and decided that the two areas where the cat had eaten through plastic just had to be cut from the cable (luckily both bite-spots are close to each other) and then the remaining good parts of the cable could be spliced together.

However, I'm now wondering if a trip to Radioshack is in order. I would like a longer cable between power brick and computer anyway. Since I am at work now and would like to swing by radioshack on my way home from work, I cannot take another look at the damaged cable. I've checked online and can find no pinouts or schematics of the power supply.

So I guess my question is this...

If you were going to repair an Inspiron 9300 Power Supply cable and you wanted to do a really good job of it, what supplies would you pick up from Radioshack while you're out shopping for a cat defibrillator? Any idea what kind of replacement cable I should be picking up? Also, are there any protective cable sleeves I can buy to prevent this kinda thing happening again?

I have a Dell Inspiron Zino HD 400 and I lost my power adapter.
I am trying to use another one from my old Dell laptop (model number: LA90PS1-00)
The power button on my Zino lights up white and then turns to solid amber color after 1 second or so.
After a little "googling" I found out it might be the power adapter (or motherboard and such)
I was wondering if my 90W (19,5V and 4,62A) might not be suitable with my Zino?
I have a couple of these 90W power adapters and they all light up green so they all work.
I want to be sure before scrapping my Zino or try to buy an OEM pwer adapter.
p.s. I have opened it all up and cleaned (dust free) the computer, taken one ram out and all that stuff I thought of)
Your help is much appreciated.

My Inspiron 15R N5110 won't come on. I've tried both battery and 2 different ac adapters. I've removed the battery, unplugged it, and held the power button for 30 seconds to discharge the system, but it still won't come on.
I took the laptop apart and everything looks alright, but the DC jack was slightly brown on top so I replaced the DC jack board. It still won't work.
I made sure the connections are tight (the DC jack and other USB board) by screwing them down. The only thing that happens that shows any life is when the battery is in. The power button, power indicator light in front, and the little "gears" light blink white for just a moment, then off, about every 5 seconds.

Any ideas? If I have to replace the motherboard, what is the difference between 0G8RW1 and 0VVN1W? I'm not worried about the product key not validating - may even put Windows 8 on it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 with Windows XP Pro, Intel Pentium 4.

When I plug in the A/C adapter, the battery will not charge and the computer will not boot if the battery is dead. If I charge the battery in another laptop and then put it in this one it will boot up, but only on battery power and until the power goes out on the battery. I have replaced the A/C adapter twice to double check the adapter being bad/good and have had same results with all of them. I have also bought a new battery as well with the same results.

Is there an alternative to replacing the motherboard? Is there somehow I can charge the batteries without having to put them into another computer?

Answer:A/C Adapter will not power Dell Inspiron, but charged battery will.

Did you test the adapter ? Is there a light on it ?
try wiggling the adapter where it goes into the computer. and watch for a light on the front of the laptop, if it comes on then you'll need to replace the power jack.

Other then that I don't think there is an external battery charger you can purchase.

I have a Dell E1405 Inspiron laptop with a 100% battery charge. The issue is that the computer will not function without the adapter plugged in, rendering the battery as dead-weight. In the boot menu, the battery is showing as "Idle: 100% charged". However, Battery health is telling me "This battery can no longer provide sufficient power to your system and needs to be replaced'. So, I'm wondering, is my battery bad or is my PC not synchronized with the battery?

Answer:Dell Inspiron E1405 will not function on Battery Power, only AC Adapter

Could be a faulty battery or more likely it might be the jack thats gone faulty its quite a well known fault if the computer is getting on a bit, the contacts inside the jack tend to stick ....

Hello, So I have got a Dell inspiron N5110 with an i7 intel core in 2013, and I don't remember opening it, falling from me or even giving it to a child. Yesterday I noticed that it is overheating through a tempreature reader software, I just did this test because I noticed it heated only after ten minutes from opening it; anyways, I noticed that it reaches 81 degrees celcius in just 10 minutes from opening it and this was very dangerous, so I tried to fix it by doing the following:-
1- Decreasing the "Maximum proccesor state".2- Shutting down the laptop and removing SD cards, USBs, the battery and the charger and pressing the power button for 20 seconds.3- I scanned for malwares using "Malware bytes 12" and viruses using "ESET NOD32 Antivirus 9" and the laptop was absolutely maleware and virus FREE.4- I ran the CPU diagnostics and I didn't have any errors.5- I tried buying a new charger.6- I tried using the laptop without the battery.
And after all of these attempts, nothing happens, so I want anybody to try and help me out.
Thank You,

my lap top doesn't want to turn on i have my ac adapter pluged in it showes a light on the battery but it just doesn't want to turn on. i tried disconnecting the battery and ac adapter pressing the power button and connecting them again but it still won't turn on. please help

Answer:dell inspiron n5110 won't turn on

Remove the battery -- if the system will power up on AC only, the battery has failed and will need to be replaced.
If the system won't power up on AC only, disconnect the adapter and remove the battery.  Hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory modules.  Then try powering up again.  If the system still won't power on, the mainboard is bad -- on a system of this age, given the cost to replace the mainboard -- you're better off shopping for a replacement system.

Hey guys!!! Plz hlp me wid dis stuff. I'm stucked in making HDD Partition in my Dell Inspiron N5110. There was 2 Partitions of HDD during the tym of puchase my laptop. The retailer too said me dat it was unable to make a 3rd partition. So I tried to make a partition by my own. I tried in 2 ways: 1) During Boot time by booting 4m win7 DVD & another by going through the disc management (diskmgmt.msc). During the tym of Boot the Unallocated space remaining 4 the 3rd partition has it's New option inactive. Therefore I failed to make a partition there. 2) Inside the disk management, 1st I shrinked my Volume1 (My C:\ drive of 135 GB) to nearly 77 GB and the rest 58 GB was unallocated. When I tried to make a new Volume (Unallocated Space>Right-click>New Volume) It says me dat "You cannot create a New Volume in this unallocated space because the disk already contains the maximum number of partitions" .Plz hlp me. What 2 do?

Answer:Dell inspiron N5110 HDD Partition

This is very interesting.

I would recommend completely formatting the HDD. Remove everything. Then, use an advanced partition editor (gParted or Partition Magic) to create the partitions you need.

Backup your data first, though....

Hi there. I have Dell Inspiron N5110 (i5-2410M 2.3GHz, nVidia 525M 1Gb RAM, 4 Gb PC3-10600 RAM (now upgraded - 8 Gb)).Can I change my CPU to a more powerful? i7-2670QM 2.2GHz or i7-2720QM, for example?Regards, Lorraine.

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 CPU Upgrade

In most cases, no - you cannot.  The systems that ship with i7 CPUs have a different system board and require a more powerful AC adapter.  You may be able to run a faster i5, but the i7s usually require a different system board.
Upgrading the CPU will also void your warranty.

I am trying to reinstall windows 7 on my dell inspiron n5110 but I need to download the dell windows 7 ISO but I can't find it?  Its not available anywhere on the Dell site? How can I get it?

Answer:Need Dell Windows 7 ISO for Inspiron n5110

It's not downloadable.  Your best bet is probably to avail yourself of the free upgrade to Windows 10 at this point (you can get version TH2 from Microsoft and use your 7 product key that's in the battery compartment to activate it).
It's at this point unlikely Dell will ship out an end of life OS  like Windows 7.

Hi all,
My troubles began about a week ago when I needed to print some forms and that I had had it with my laptop not printing (despite recognizing my printer and even allowing it to print a test page from within the printer maintenance software). So I began fiddling...well now everything is messed up.
A description of symptoms:
1) My sound has a 'delay' for lack of a better word. Say an alert pop up comes up, it is 1-2 seconds later when the alert sound plays.
2) Flash games are severely delayed and I keep getting shockwave errors stalling my Firefox. I am also getting the occasional flash plug in crash notice (even if not attempting to play games)
3) I am able to watch videos/listen to music on my computer with minimal interference, but cannot use Spotify streaming as the sound has gone wonky (very high pitched digitized, skippy, etc.)
4) There is a delay between the time I click a button and it actually reacts, so where opening firefox used to take a few seconds, it now takes half a minute. Switching tabs used to be instant, it now has to think about it.
5) CPU is running hot, too hot. I borrowed my fiance's laptop pad with a fan and thankfully it brought it down from 74C to under 69C, but the fan is still running constantly. He's bringing home a can of air to give it a proper cleaning tonight (as the one I had only gave me one quick spray before running out). It has always run a bit hot, but this constant running is new to this we... Read more

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5040N AC adapter Lost Power once plugged into Laptop

Hi RAYB871,
Please check if there is any damage on the machine. Check if all the ports on the machine are fine or misaligned. Sometimes if the pins in the USB ports are touching each other, they are known to cause many issues on the machine.
Three components cause this issue, in this order:
Adapter - you have already tested another adapter, so ruled out.
DC Port - the port that holds the adapter in, might be shorted - you would need this part -
Motherboard - I would primarily suspect this part, if the dc port does not fix the issue, then it is the motherboard that has failed and needs to be replaced.
If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call -
Personally, I would suggest, you invest your money on a new machine than to repair this old machine. However, it is your discretion.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

Dell doesn’t recommend downgrading of BIOS, when you downgrade the BIOS from A 11 BIOS version to A 09 BIOS version. In case the BIOS downgrade fails and computer does not post; then the computer will not be covered under warranty.

Answer:Dell Inspiron n5110 - 8 beeps on start up

Eight beeps means a display failure.
Since the external monitor works, you know it's not a fault with the video card.
With the notebook off, hold down the "D" key and power the notebook on.  If you get solid colors on the screen, then you know the LCD is good.  I would look for a problem with the video cable.  Just resently, someone found that the front bezel was creating a problem with the video cable.

Hello all,
I have two Dell Inspiron N5110 from 2011, one with a core i3 and one with a core i5 processor. To my knowledge that is the only difference between the two machines. I have tried the dell support site for a list of parts to check this but was unable to get the component list for one of them.
Any way, my problem is that one of the laptop (mine) has broken plastic around one of the screen hinges causing it to constantly fall unless at 90 degrees to the base and it also has a dodgy headphone jack that has moved away from the casing meaning it no longer works properly. My question is; as the circuit board with the headphone port is below the motherboard, would I be able to move the motherboard from the laptop with the issues over onto the laptop, and thereby utilize the fully functioning case, without causing any problems in the software of the hard drive and mother board.
Otherwise I'll just move the screen over.
Any advice appreciated

I have an N5110 Inspiron. I bought it around 6 years ago. It had a faulty HDD so I had it replaced about 5.5 years ago. It has been working fine since then.
However, it has been making a weird clicking sound from the beginning. It usually occurs when the HDD is idle (the HDD led isn't on). Sometimes it doesn't happen for minutes whereas other times it happens a couple of seconds apart. I was wondering what could this be?
My laptop is getting quite old and currently, I cannot replace it so I want to keep it functional as long as possible. Could this clicking reduce the life-expectancy of my HDD, is it a sign of something faulty? If yes, what can I do to prevent an HDD failure and losing all my files?

Answer:Dell N5110 Inspiron HDD clicking sound

They don't call it click death for nothing.  The drive is trying to recalibrate track zero and isnt finding it. So the drive is likely to die very soon and lose everything.  Drives die, this isn't a fault anymore than the brakes on your car or other mechanical things like tires wearing out from use.

Hi, I've had my laptop for a year now, and last week it stopped connecting to the internet. It connects to the network, but it always says "no internet access", even after connecting it to an Ethernet cable. Every other device in my home works just fine. It runs on Windows 7.

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 not connecting to Internet

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG , Webroot etc

can we see an ipconfig /all
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

This should also work for windows 8
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
From the notepad menu ... Read more

Hello everyone,
I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop and for a few years I haven't been able to get my USB 3.0 ports to work. I believe I might have messed up the driver installations when I first got the laptop.
I got a new hard drive lately and decided to test my USB 3.0 ports before installing Windows 7 because I will really need them for work soon, so I tried them on Windows 8.1. They worked automatically without having to install any driver (I think 8.1 has its own 3.0 pilots?)
So I formatted my hard drive and installed my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits. I downloaded all the pilots from this page ( in another computer and placed them on a flash drive.
After installing Windows 7 and booting for the first time, I tried my best to follow the order explained here:
I started with Dell System Software Utility (DSS_UTIL_WIN_R282538)
Then Intel Management Engine Interface Driver (R292194)
Then Intel HM67 Express Chipset Family Driver (R292253)
Then Wistron USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver (R309746)
And after each driver installation, I would reboot my laptop. But when installing the Wistron driver, the R309746 file extracted itself and then nothing happened. So I went to the C:\dell\drivers\R309746 folder and tried to launch "setup.exe" again from there, with admin rights, I received the window of "This program might now have installed correctly" and I had two options, &q... My Dell Inspiron N5110 works just fine if I plug it into the AC power without putting the battery in but if I put the battery in it crashes immediately and will neither charge or boot. It has become a desk bound laptop but hopefully there is a fix that can set it free again...

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 - Won't work with battery

Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter and battery? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter and battery?
Try flashing the BIOS if possible - restart and check.
Although you would need the battery and adapter to be connected to flash the BIOS. So, you might need to test with another battery.
If another good known battery exhibits the same behavior on the system, then the motherboard might be faulty.

With this post I would like to clarify if there is a solution for the USB 3.0 drivers on Windows 10 for my laptop? During the last two years had upgraded my laptop from windows 7, then to windows 8 and 8.1 and at latest to Windows 10. After the first upgrade to windows 10, USB 3.0 ports were working (with some faults, but at least sometimes working). Always were using the USB 3.0 driver from the dell support page for windows 7. Since the newest version of windows 10 is now installed, the driver became not compatible with windows 10. I know, that the technologies are moving always forward, but it is sad that the 4 years laptop may loose such simple funcions, when it is still may cover my needs.

Hi everyone,
I've a problem with a DELL Inspiron N5110.
When I turn on the laptop, the fan is working for 15 seconds then it turns off by itself.. but the Windows boots properly and the other components work fine.
I know that I can't use my laptop if the CPU fan doesn't work because it will overheat the cpu and the motherboard so..
Could you please give me an opinion ?
Thank you

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 CPU Fan doesn't work

The fan will spin at powerup self test time, and then won't come on (or run at full speed) until a temperature setpoint is reached.
Depending on who replaced the mainboard, verify that the thermal pads were replaced when the heatsink was removed from the system.  If that part was not replaced, the system will run very warm.

I will try one more time to make this post cause the previous one never went live.
I have a 3 years old Dell Inspiron N5110 i5/8GB ram/Nvidia/ Win 7 home premium and i am very happy with its performance and build quality. Yesterday i tried to reserve a Windows 10 copy and after having trouble to make the icon pop in my taskbar, i managed to get it popped.
When i clicked on the Get Windows 10 app icon to get the reserve it came up with this message...

"BIOS isn't supported"
I have 2 more laptops that are 2-3 years older than my N5110 and both are qualified and reserved the update...
I am running the latest BIOS A11, all windows updates and latest drivers for this machine and wanted to ask:
Is it me or other N5110 users getting this message?
Is there any other BIOS update that i might missing to get his to work?
Is Dell going to fix this till 29 July and when Windows 10 go live?
An official reply or if there is an official link from Dell for this issue would be appreciated.

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 not supporting Windows 10?

Just update your BIOS to A11, wait for some time (few hours or a day), and everything will be Ok.
It works although not supported by Dell.
Thank you all.

I have a dell inspiron N5110 and i am planning on upgrading the ram modules which are rated at 1333hz. i would like to know if the motherboard can support ram modules at higher frequencies, if yes, how much of a performance boost can i expect.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell inspiron N5110 15R Memory Upgrade

Faster modules may work but won't increase the speed - 1333 MHz is the limit for memory speed in this model.

After re-installing Windows 7 on my 1,5 years old Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop, my laptop won't shut down anymore.
The laptop has every symptom of shutting down, it will do all of the updates when there are, the screen will go black after 'shutting down'.
But the laptop will always be making those 'think' noises. Also there are some of the lights still on. After it gets in this 'state', I'm also unable to turn on my laptop again.

It will turn off when I push on my off button for like 5-10 seconds.
But that won't be too good for my laptop doing that all the time...

Now, my laptop will get in sleeping state, but than again.. I can't wake him up again.

Edit: I forgot to say, since a few days, it will just 'turn off' out of nowhere.

Is there anyone who experienced this before, or who can just help me out?
The nice Dell Support won't help me in any other way then by using the phone, but that doesn't seem like a perfect way of solving a problem in my opinion, therefore I'm asking your help.

Hope you get this, my English aint too good.

I'm trying to do a factory reset on my Dell laptop. I didn't receive a CD when I bought it so I tried doing it through the BIOS. I hit F8 repeatedly and got to the repair your computer screen. I selected that option and then it shows a screen that says Windows loading files. Unfortunately, after that it just freezes once the loading bar is full. Then after maybe 10 minutes it goes to resuming Windows normally (I assume a time out of some sort). Is there another way to do a factory reset? Like I said I don't have the CD because it didn't come with it. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong? Thanks

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 Factory Reset Help

Hi yuanaug,
Dell does not ship any factory recovery discs for systems. There is a ‘Dell DataSafe Local Backup’ application installed in the system wherein you could create recovery discs. Please follow the steps below to restore the computer to factory state.

Turn on the computer, after the Dell Logo appears and then disappears repeatedly press the <F8> key until you see the Advanced Boot Options menu.
From the Advanced Boot Options highlight Repair Your Computer with the arrow keys and press <ENTER>.
Click ‘Next’ and login to your administrator account on the computer. The administrator account is the account created the first time the computer was turned on.
Click ‘Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options’ and follow the prompts provided.

If the above steps are not working and your system is booting into the operating system then follow the steps in the link given below to create a factory recovery discs and use the discs to restore the computer to factory state.
If the computer is not booting into the operating system then I am afraid you will have to perform manual operating system reinstallation from the operating system discs.
Please let me know if this helps.

only 1 usb port is working. the drivers from Dell/Drivers - didn't solved that issue.
2. and another problem - the battery is not charging - it's status is:
0% available (Plugged in, charging).
I read that I have to update the bios, but to update the bios I need at least 10% battery.
Thank's for your help.

Answer:1. dell inspiron n5110 usb 3.0 port not working on windows 10 64 bit

The problem with the Renesas controller and Windows 10 is known --
For the other issue, does the system correctly identify the AC adapter (f2 at powerup to check).  If the adapter shows "unknown", you have a bad AC adapter, power jack or mainboard.  A BIOS update will not solve this - replace parts in that order.
If the adapter IS recognized but the battery won't charge - particularly if the system is on its original battery, which is now 5-6 years old - it's time for a new battery.  They do wear out over time -and anything beyond 3 years or so has had a good, long life.

I'm sorry, but every one of your "suggestions" are things I did before coming to this forum.

Please take the time and help me address this issue rather than reading from a trouble shooting guide.

Thank you.

Answer:dell inspiron n5110 fans work non stop!

If you've never done so, remove the heatsink fan assembly and clean it thoroughly - and replace the thermal pads that sit between the GPU/CPU and heatsink assembly.
Unfortunately due to the design of this model, it's a major undertaking - see the service manual for the procedure, which includes removing the system board.  You may want to leave the job to a shop - expect about an hour's labor charge, whatever that costs where you're located.

When going to update using Dells data safe it says missing recovery partition. Is there anyway I can create it without losing any data/files already on laptop. Thanks guys

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 has missing recovery partition.

Well the problem is actually on Dell's part not yours and is rather easy to solve. Actually the recovery partiton is hidden so the old version of Data Safe is unable to detect it. Let's solve this problem niw:

1. Open MyComputer, Click on C: drive.
2. Open Program Files (x86)/Dell DataSafe Local Backup/Components/DSUpdate
3. Click DSUpdate (an .exe file shown as type "Application") (You must be connected to internet)

4. It will update from version 9.4.40 to 9.4.4x (where x > 0)

5. It did something with the partition.
6. It will tell you to "reboot". Restart the laptop.
7. Then launch Dell DataSafe Local Backup.
8. This new version will detect the partition and enable you to make recovery discs.
9. You will need two DVD's and it will take approx one hour to create the recovery discs.
Hope this helps !

I bought a Dell N5110 last month but about 2 weeks ago, the USB port to the right side stopped working completely. And just today i noticed the USB port at the back has also stopped working. I now only have the left side port working and fear that may seize to work soon.
When i go to the device manager and click on "Other devices" i have this device in list  "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller" One of which have a yellow error icon of some sort. When i double click either of them this is the message i get:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) &There is no driver selected for the device information set or element,To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.
I have tried searching for drivers for them but i can't find them anywhere on the dell site. I found someone else who requested these drivers on another post and tried to click the links but it takes me to a blank page. Please help?

Hi guys, I've been using Unified Remote on my Android phone to use my laptop for a while now. I recently just learned about the Wake On Lan feature and it is something I'd really like to see working (what's the point of remote control if I still have to get up to turn on my laptop!)

I've been trying to follow the directions and setting up my Power Management options in my BIOS, however I've run into some issues. First of all, when I go into my BIOS settings, there isn't even an option for Power Management or the like in order to set remote wakeup. So I don't even know where to proceed from here.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 with the A11 BIOS. I'm running Windows 8 64-bit.

I'd be more than happy to provide any additional details and even pictures of my BIOS screen options if my description isn't clear enough.

Thank you!

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 Wake On Lan BIOS issues

I've been trying to follow the directions and setting up my Power Management options in my BIOSClick to expand...

What directions? How do you know that any change is needed or possible in the BIOS?

I probably shouldn't be posting here, as I have never used WOL, but I thought it was just a matter of enabling the feature in the Properties of the adapter (in Device Manager). It does make sense that it could be an item in the BIOS; I just don't recall ever reading that anywhere.

I have formatted my laptop and done a fresh install of Windows 8 x64 Release Version (from MSDN), and I am unable to connect to the internet. My laptop picks up the wireless with no problems, but whenever I try to open a webpage I get the message - "You are not connected".
Other PC's and device connected to the wireless are able to access the internet with no problem and my laptop was previously able to connect when it was running Windows 7. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be wrong?

Answer:Windows 8 - Dell Inspiron N5110 - No Internet Connectivity

Hi friend!
Maybe try reinstalling your wireless drivers, if you remember what they are called. Contact your Laptop's manufacturer or look up your model.
I hope you get it fixed!

I know this isn't actually a graphics card issue, but most people who have an n5110 and could only either disable the display adapter or hook up an external monitor thought it was a graphics card problem, so I have posted it here (this is the category I've been lurking in).

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [Canada]

There is a BIOS update for the n5110 that should fix the problem! It has been many months of frustration and waiting and now it seems like we will finally be able to use out laptops at full resolution.

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but according to others it has.

There is also supposedly a BIOS update for the Vostro 3550 that fixes the same issue.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 that freezes randomly. I cannot figure out what the issue is, no matter what I do or read in Event Viewer.

System :

- Intel i5 2430m 2.4GHz;
- 6GB DDR3 (4+2GB) Samsung 1333MHz;
- 320GB Western Digital WD3200BPVT HDD;
- Intel HD3000 + NVidia GT 525M 1GB
- Windows 8.1 Pro x64

Maximum temps achieved while running AIDA64 System Stability test (using both GPUs and CPU at 100%) : 90 degrees Celsius.
Maximum GPU temp in Furmark : 84 degrees Celsius.
Maximum CPU temp in Prime95 : 80 degrees Celsius.
Cooling system has been cleaned and fresh thermal paste has been applied, namely Gelid GC-Extreme 2.
The system passes all diagnostics : Dell Diagnostics (quick & full), Dell Pre-Boot Diagnostics, AIDA64 System Stability Test (1h), Gold Memory&MemTest 86, Furmark, Prime95, basically anything you throw at it.
The freezes occur usually during normal operation : browsing the web, browsing the hard drive, downloading files using your browser.
The biggest number of freezes occurred after a fresh install of Windows 7 and using Firefox/IE to download the nVidia drivers.

Steps taken :
- Updated BIOS from A9 to A11 (latest);
- Installed fresh Windows 7;
- Upgraded nvidia drivers from 288 to 344;
- Upgraded Intel Centrino Wireless driver;
- Upgraded power adapter from 90W to 130W;
- Used system without battery;
- Used system with Intel HD Graphics disabled, then with nVidia graphics disabled;
- Formatted hard drive;
- Installed Windows 8.1

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5110 passes all diagnostics but freezes

I think I may have found the issue. I took the laptop apart again and I noticed that the thermal pad that covers the PCH was missing. The keyboard's metal frame was touching directly on the intel PCH.
I noticed some high temperatures on the PCH, namely 77 degrees Celsius and I thought I should check it. Seems whoever took the laptop apart last time, forgot to put the thermal pad back on.
I'm gonna mount a new pad and post back the results.

I have Dell Inspiron N5110 which cannot shut down neither in Windows 7 nor in Ubuntu Linux. I specifically booted Ubuntu Live from the CD to eliminate the possibility that  the problem is in the Windows 7. Shutdown in Ubuntu does not work either. This proves that the reason in not a BACKGROUND application in Windows that remains hanging and does not allow the laptop to shut down.
The laptop cannot wake up after Sleep or Hibernate either.
I have tried every solution that you advised to all the other people in the forum that have the same issue.
1. The laptop cannot shut down in Safe Mode either.
2. It cannot shut down even after Clean Boot Mode - all non-MS services disabled and all Startups disabled.
3. I tried changing the Advanced Power Options of "Allow Hybrid Sleep" - both ON for "On AC Power" and "Running on battery" - no change.
4. I tried installing the latest video drivers for Nvidia. This did not help either.
5. Running only on battery does not change anything - still cannot shutdown.
6. Running only on AC adapter without battery - still cannot shutdown.
7. I tried removing the AC adapter and battery and holding the POWER button for 30 seconds to RESET the laptop - did not work.
ATTENTION: I've been reading your forums all day and saw at least 10-15 reports of the same problem and not a single fixed case.

Answer:DELL Inspiron N5110 does not Shut Down and does not wake up from Sleep

Remove the keyboard and palm rest (guide from dell shows you how) and you should see a small coin cell battery. Remove it for at least 10 seconds, then put it back in. Enter BIOS and make sure there isn't anything weird that was changed. It should work properly now. I have had this working in Ubuntu 12.04 for the last few days, with no problems.
