I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

How long can it take? At some point I'm gonna have to bite the bullet - what should I do?

If you have got an XP install disc to do a recovery if it goes bad, i'd just hit the reset button, and boot into safemode straight away [press F8 as it is booting] then schedule a chkdsk and restart.

to schedule chkdsk...

Go to "my computer" and right click on the drive windows is on.

Select "properties" then go to the "tools" tab and click "check now" on the error checking section.

It will tell you that it cant perfrom it and ask you do you want to schedule it for next time...
click "yes" and reboot.Click to expand...

I use my laptop for school and, by keeping it on power saving mode, usually get through two school days without charging my laptop. Ever since I've downloaded Windows 10, (1) my computer doesn't shut off all the way when I close it, which drains the battery, and (2) every time I charge it, it turns off the power saving mode, which is really annoying. This is especially annoying when I don't notice it isn't on and my battery drains even faster. Is there any reason it won't turn off? Is there a setting I can use to keep the power saving mode on at all times?

Answer:Why won't my computer turn off all the way and why can't my computer stay on power saving mode?

Your system might have a virus, try to scan using Malwarebytes, Superspyware , Trojan-Killer. Restart your system then try to download Hitman Pro then Run it. Then optimize your system using Ccleaner. Hope this would help.

Hi, I have a problem with windows XP. Everytime I turn off my computer by clicking on "turn off computer," I receive an error message popup that states "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to be closed." After that pop-up message, the computer freezes for about a minute and goes back to its normal format (desktop) and the computer DOES NOT TURN OFF.

How do I turn off my computer without unplugging the computer? I try "ctrl+alt+del" to go to the windows task manager to "shut down" the computer but..the computer restarts again and doesnt turn off. Do I have a virus or a windows explorer problem? and how do i fix it? thank you

Hi TheRealDanny.

The crash dump (a Stop 0x3B one) is not saying anything in detail about the probable cause of the BSOD).

Test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.
If it does not show any error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers. Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

Ok well, my computer is pretty old, but its not THAT old, it has always worked very well, and all of a sudden one day it froze and i tried turning it off but when i went to press the power button it wouldnt turn off, no matter how many times i pressed the power button. so i had to turn off the power switch in the back of the computer. it did this consistently so i decided to format my computer and delete the partition stuff like that, but it still did it, and i even virus checked and there were no viruses.

my computer freezes out of nowhere at random spots (startup, windows, my desktop, etc) and when i try to turn it off the power button doesnt work so i have to turn it off by turning off the switch at the back of the computer, please help me, i don't know whats going on!

Answer:URGENT PROBLEM: Computer freezes, but can not turn computer off

Try holding the power switch in for at least 4 seconds. There is a entry in BIOS for instant off and 4 second delay. Yours is probably set to 4 seconds. Delay is good as it prevents accidential power offs from hitting the switch by mistake.

If you are hiolding the switch in and it isn't powering down there are two possibilties. Switch is defective or connector has came off the header.

I am having trouble with a 6 month old IBM R51 laptop - when I select TURN OFF COMPUTER from within Windows and the START button - the computer sometimes hangs and will not shut down. I have to press the power button to reset. Any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks!

Answer:Computer Hangs When Turn Off Computer Selected In Windows

Welcome to BC! There are many possible causes, however there is one common cause. Often XP's exit sound file gets corrupt and if it does not run then XP won't shut down. I am not sure based on what you have told us so far if this is the issue or not, but let's see:Go to:Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tabUnder Program Events scroll down until you see Exit Windows. Highlight Exit Windows by clicking on it once. Then under Sounds choose None. Click Apply and finally OK. Reboot if possible, or shut down computer and restart manually. Once it is up and running, shut down computer by going to Start > Turn Off Computer. See if it will shut down on it's own now.If it does, the only difference will be that you will not longer hear the 2 seconds of music that XP usually plays as it shuts down.

First of, my monitor exhibited signs of flickering during start-up, but only minor ones and would just stop at the 'Welcome' screen of windows so I didn't give it much thought. Iv'e been using it with the cpu the same time I bought the monitor.

But after some time, the flickering got worse. It went from 1-2 second interval flickers to a whole 10 seconds of blackness before it showed anything.

Now,Iv'e got a new cpu but still using the old monitor. After a day or so, the monitor exhibited the first symptoms of my first cpu, so I just dismissed it. But after a week, It got a hell worse, before I even start-up my computer, the monitor doesn't show Analog/Digital at the top-left corner of the screen. PLUS my cpu keeps restarting after I pushed the ON button after 10 seconds or so.

My question, Is the monitor responsible for the restart and what could be the reason for the flickering?

Thanks for a fast reply.

Welcome Pokeman5 to the windows 7 forums.

The graphics card might be your culprit. Please update your system configuration settings under user cp so that others can maybe help you.
Usually the monitor won't stop your machine from booting. The graphic card most likely be the cause.

There is also the possibility that your power supply could be defective or going bad. Lots of possibilities.

so please help/B]

Answer:Solved: computer beeping sounds when i turn on computer

There are three possibilities here, all related to your memory.

1) You have forgotten to fit your memory back in.
2) Your memory isn't properly seated in its slot(s)
3) You have killed your memory because of not following antistatic procedures.

I'm suspecting it is either 2 or 3.

As the title said, my computer freezes during games. When it freezes the screen just stop at the last frame (so no black screen or anything like that) and I can hear the game for about a second before it turns to a low clicking sound. At which point I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. Nothing else works. Then I get the usual question of how I want to start the computer, I always pick “start normally” and it’s like it never happened.

I think it’s because the GPU is overheating, because that’s the only component that’s really hot. When I check the temp while playing it’s usually building up to about 60C (24-30C on idle) and stays around that number. And it fells really hot when I touch it after it’s happened. The only problem with that theory is that I can play every game out there usually on the best setting (haven’t tried every powerful game out there) and not a single problem with lag or such. Then again, I’ve never had that problem with MW3, and the temp stays around 50C on that. Not to say that the GPU is really that great. It’s average at best, but I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything so figured I didn’t need the best.
I built the computer myself in June 2011. And it went fine without any problems until maybe 6 months ago, not really sure when it happened.

Here’s what I’ve done so far

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?

Hi all.
I moved out of a 14-year-old case (Gateway) and into an Ultra brand Gladiator mid-tower.

I have an EVGA nForce 650i Ultra Motherboard, and a "Power Up" brand 450-Watt power supply.

The setup worked fine in the old case, though Windows was freezing regularly after 15 minutes. I figured that was related to the hard-drive, since it wasn't tightly mounted, and I wasn't using enough cooling fans. So I got a new case and cannabalaized a fan from an old computer.

The power outlet and cord are good, and I swapped out the power supply with a 230 watt unit, and pulled the switch from the old case, but neither powered on the computer. Nothing seems out of the ordinary with the switch on the case I bought.

Did I buy a defective unit? Is there something I'm missing or should try again? Something else? Thanks for the help.

Answer:Changed computer cases, now computer won't turn on

Have you considered that going from a 450 psu to only a 230 might have something to do with it?

Is the motherboard shortening out by any part of it touching the case?

I just got this HP pavilion 762n last year. Now whenever I turn the computer on it won't respond(Goes to a Blank Black Screen) and the only way I can make the computer respond is to go to safe mode and UN-install the Graphic Card, then restart the computer back again. Once I've done that the computer would work, but I can't watch Videos or play Video Games on the computer. There also would be these little blue lines on the computer screen (Sometimes their would be alot of the lines and sometimes the lines would be made by the trail of my mouse).

I've tried lots of ways to fix the computer. I've tried:

- Un-installing and re-installing my graphic card (Nvidia Geforce4 MX420 graphics card with TV-Out) that came with the computer.

- Rolling Back My Graphic Card.

- Updating My Drive from Windows Update.

- I've tried using a program that test my computer and tells me whats wrong with it. It said I got a problem with something like the VIDEO MEMORY CARD and I don't know what that is.

Is the Only way I can fix this is to buy another Graphic Card. I do not want to waste $200.00. Please Help Me!

Thank You.

Hello there, recently, I've been having an issue with my PC. Randomly, all peripherals (Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, etc.) turn off, but the computer stays on, and I need to turn it off by flipping the power off, and once I turn it back on, it boots normally and such. Like I said, the times this happens seem to be completely random, though I believe it has only happened at night, but that may be just coincidence. I have used virus scans, and nothing has come up, so I don't believe that's the issue. I haven't made any significant hardware changes recently either. Does anyone have an idea of what could be happening?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Computer peripherals turn off but not computer itself?

Get into the motherboards bios by pressing a key noted when you first power up the computer. Look for "hit F? for setup" or something like that. Reset the bios to defaults

Hello, I'm having some trouble with my computer. I know this has been posted before, but my computer will not turn on. Well, it will for a split second, then it justs shuts back off. I know its not the PSU, because after the computer messed up, I bought a new one, but it still did not work after that, it did the same thing, turn on for a second, then shut back down. Could it be a motherboard issue?

Answer:Computer will not turn on

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

We need some more info before we can help you.

Go HERE and read my post.

Obviously changing the psu hasn`t helped. When did the problem first start? Had you installed any new hardware/software just before the problem occured?

Please let us know.

I got up this morning and tried to turn on my computer, and I got a blue screen with grey letters and it said something like "STOP" only I wasn't doing anything at the time. How can I make my computer work again please, I need it to work so I can make money. I'll be very graitful if you can help me.

Answer:Help with my computer, will not turn on.

Can you post any error codes that are displayed on the blue screen? Did you recently install new software, update drivers, install any hardware? Was the machine shutdown from a power outage?

Hellow guys, i'm also currently have an issues where, when i switch on the main switch, the computer turn on itself, i didnt even press the power button! And after a few second, maybe 2 to 3 or 4, it turn off itself again. When i press the power button myself, there is no more power. I cant turn it on.

So, i do the same thing again. This time I switch off the main switch and turn it back on and the same thing happen again, the computer turn on and off again, and i also cannot switch on the computer after that. The same thing happen the next few time, so i assume there is something wrong with the hardware, or something loose? Any idea anyone?

And, to be more specific, when i turn off the main switch and turn on immediatly, there is no power and the computer is not running. But if i wait for maybe a few minute after turn off the main switch and turn back on, it run itself, the same process as i mention above. So is it weird? Hardware problem?

Answer:Computer turn on and off itself? Help

did it just start doing this out of the blue? Did you do something before this started?

The first thing I'd check is the power button on the case, as you say it does not work and if it's jammed on the ON it could give similar issues.
Open the case and remove the power button connector from the motherboard's pins, and if you can install in its place the connector of the reset button. Both buttons are the same under the hood so it's not going to hurt the board.
Now try using the reset button as if it was the power on/off button.

Okay. Here is the deal. My laptop was un-plugged and I didn't notice until I came to it and saw it was shut off. I knew it was because the battery died so I just pugged it in and waited about an hour. I came back to turn it back on, but nothing happened. I left it for a bit longer and still it would not turn on. Any way I can fix this?

Answer:My computer will not turn on?

Remove the battery and AC power cable, leave the battery out and reconnect the power cable, try powering up.

Most laptops tell you if the cable is providing power via a light, check this if your laptop has this feature.

If your laptop doesnt have a light or the light isnt on and it doesnt power up, I'd suggest checking the power adapter on the cable it should have a light on the brick, if it doesnt check the fuse on the plug.

What make and model if your laptop?

Hi
I am new here and hope you can help. My friend has a computer that the power supply went on so I replaced it and booted the computer up was running ok. Turned it off. Next time she went to boot it up NO POWER. I have tried another supply and it works but have not replaced it as the power supply I tested it with will not fit in the case. I will get another one. But I do not understand how 2 power supply's can go like this. Help

Answer:Computer will not turn on

Leave the case open and shutdown the computer and let me know if there is a green light (LED) on the motherboard and if it is lit even with the power off.

Then plug the one that is in the case back up now and see if it strangely is working again?

Ok so I decided to listen to some music while I took a nap, so I played music and shut my moniter off and layed down. When I woke up I noticed the music wasn't playing so I went over to check, and the screen was black and nothing happened if I moved the mouse or pressed a key. I reset the computer, and it worked fine for like two minutes and then it went black again. Now it won't even turn on. The light on the computer turns on, and usually it lets out two beeps, and now it just stays silent. I haven't changed anything, what could be wrong?

Answer:Computer Won't Turn On

Hi
Have you unplugged the system from wall power and let it set overnight?
Is there any way to test the psu and other parts in another system? If the cpu is dead that will keep one from booting or hearing any beeps. As well you might look into resetting your bios. Do you have a manual for your system?
Just throwing some thoughts your way.

Answer:Can't turn Off the computer

Did you install any new hardware or software just prior to this happening?

A quick fix might be to try a System Restore to a date just prior to the problem.

Start > Run: msconfig > Launch System Restore and select a date before this was happening.

System Restores can be "undone" if not helpful.

Just for fun try and and let the computer run from the time you get up to the time you come home from school or work. If that does not help try and see if you can run the PC in safe mode.

Also note if the PC shws any text on the screen.

Did you do something out of the ordinary the day or two before the PC problems started? (played with bios, installed a new software, new hardware, played with cables, replace some stuff, got a wierd message from pc,...???)

Hello,

I was working on my medion computer this morning, when suddenly it turned off, and it is now refusing to turn back on. I have done what it advised me to do in the computer manual, which was to turn the power supply off, press the on button for ten seconds then turn the power supply back on after five seconds and turn it on.

When it crashed I was using:
Windows Media Centre
Windows Media Player
AOL Vista Ready

I have tried the following to get it to work:

Change which socket I use
Change the cable
Leave it for a while
What the manual said
Unplugging all connections and trying to start it

Does anyone have any other ideas I could try or know what is wrong with it?

Thanks

Answer:Computer won't turn on

HI dan ..

try using a different power supply .. there are other things that you could try first like removing all the power cables to HDD's & CD\DVD's, removing everything but the CPU & CPU FAN and power supply connectors from the motherboard and then try powering on again but I reckon it might be easier to raid one of your other PC's for a similar power supply and see if it boots using that .. and at the same time the other power supply could be checked on a working PC to see if it works .. just take care doing it ..

Hi,

I recently re-installed windows 7 on my computer, and after i installed all of the drivers, i realized my computer wouldn't shut down.

I mean, it says its shutting down, then the screen goes into standby mode, but the computer keeps running.
I don't understand why or how this could happen.

It's weird, i even tried rolling back on some bios changes i made, but nothing. I don't even know how to troubleshoot this. I tried googling it, but everyone that has a different problem on which the shutting down screen persists.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I see there have been a couple posts like this, but thought I would personalize it.

To start, on my old comp I had problems with it turning back on when I turned it off. It would just come back on by itself.

Then one day it suddenly shut down, and would not turn on. When I tried to turn it on, it made a litle noise (would later discover it was the noise of fans turning on for a split second) but nothing else.

I figured it was old and I wanted to update anyway so I didnt care.

I went and bought a new motherboard, graphics card, processor, new RAM and a new power supply.

They were:

GIGABYTE GA-G33M-DS2R LGA 775 Intel G33 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

APEVIA ATX-AS520W-BK ATX 520W Power Supply 115/230 V CB IEC 950/ TUV EN 60950/ UL 1950/ CSA 950

Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 Conroe 2.66GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

GeForce 8800 GTX

And Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

I installed everything into my old case.

When I turned it on the processor fan spun, fan on the power supply spun, and fan on the side cover spun for a second, then shut off.

I switched outlets and when I turned it on again, suddenly the processor fan and power supply fan both turned on and stayed on. However, the processor made a high pitched continuous noise.

I turned it off. I noticed the fan was a little loose from the motherboard so I tightened it and turned it on again. Again it turned on... Read more

Even tho' 520w PSU should be enough, it may not have the needed amps on the 12v rail(s) to fire up the mobo.... hopefully that's all it is. My other thought is that maybe the heat sink on the CPU wasn't seated correctly and the CPU may have been thermally damaged. I know it doesn't seem possible that a CPU can reach critical temps that fast, but a friend burned up on old Duron 800 by turning on the PC for about 3 seconds without a heatsink; "I was testing my RAM and just wanted to see if would POST and didn't think I needed the heat sink..." - famous last words Double check everything: the RAM, video card, CPU, all power connections and data cables. Be sure everything is seated firmly. Maybe take the mobo out of the case and see if it powers up "on the bench". Maybe something in the case is grounding it.

I have a second computer which has a 478 chip, video card etc. For a longtime I have noticed when I go to and run pcpitstop it says my video card is performing badly...56 pixel while the average is 124.

Recently it wouldn't start properly and my monitor would flicker and die so I changed the monitor but got the same problem.

I had already changed my power supply so I took it back and asked if they would check my video card.

They said they had found a problem with my motherboard and solved the problem.

Although it starts up ok initially, after about 15 minutes it blacks out .

However the thing is still going even when I try to turn it off with the switch.

If I hold the switch in, it does go off after about 15 seconds, but when I let it go it immediately starts again but nothing appears on the screen. Eventually I get it going again and it boots up perfectly only to crash again within 10 to 15 minutes.

Hey guys, hope you're all doing alright tonight.
Here's what happened:

I had formatted my computer earlier today, and noticed that my copy of CoD: MW2 was lagging a lot. After determining that it wasn't a hardware/driver problem (it was running just fine in the morning), I decided to try formatting again. I left my computer unattended, and when I got back, it was off.

I checked all the connections, tried a different power cord, different plug, tried removing and putting back the RAM sticks; nothing. What happens is this: When I plug the computer in, the PSU indicator light at the back turns green, as it usually does. Once I press the power button, it (the power button LED) flashes and both the PSU and the power button lights turn off. I have no idea what might've caused this without a single warning. Can anyone please help?

Thanks in advance.

As I pushed it in, I saw a spark from the back of the computer and the computer turned off. Now I cant turn on the computer anymore. I mean nothing happen, like there is no power at all or anything. I mean if the video card is burnt, you still be able to turn the cpu on and see some kind of power right? But in my case, there is no sign of power.

So Im wondering what could it be. It seems like the power supply is messed up but Im not sure. If anyone can help me please reply. Im greatly appreciated. Thank You

At all.
Yes, it is plugged in
I press the "on" button, and NOTHING happens, no fan, no lights, nada.

One thing, there was like a red switch above my power socket on the computer, (where the lead goes into) with 230v and 115V, and I switched it, from 203 to 155, and then it didn't work. That might be the problem, I don't know. But when i switched it back to 203v, still, nothing happened.

The last time I turned it off, I'm pretty sure I just shut it down, like I usually do, instead of putting it on stand-by.

Answer:Computer will not turn on!

Not sure where you are located but if in US, and you turned it on after switching that, then you blew out power supply though it sounds like it was blown anyway and is your issue. I hope it was blown before you threw the switch because if not you may have done considerably more damage then that. Personal;ly it is time to take the power supply out and to a shop fopr testing...perhaps the whole tower.

Either a program is refusing to close or you have a bad driver installed. If this has just started, might try using the restore feature in WIndows going back before the problem existed. If that doesn't fix it, what have you recently installed? What error messages are you getting when Windows starts or shuts down?

If you're using a power strip, surge protector or UPS, disconnect those and connect PC directly to a working outlet.

Press/hold power button for ~30 sec

shut down in the command promt so the "its now safe to turn off your computer" came up and turned off the computer manully (pressing the button on the front of the computer) but it just starts up again. (it does work if i use the switch on the back of computer but what a hassle)

I have no other problems with the computer or windows except this

Im lost, any suggestions, think i mite send back the computer if they let me.

In a nutshell, my desktop computer won't turn on anymore.

This is a system that I have built. It has been working with the current CPU and Motherboard for over a year. The last hardware upgrade I made was a new power supply and an extra stick of RAM, but it's been working fine with those things for a few months.

Last week, I when I was trying to plug something else in near my desk I somehow pulled on the other cords and my system all went off. I pushed all the plugs back in, and everything else powered on - speakers, monitor, etc. but not the computer. I wiggled the cables, unplugged them and plugged them back in, all that stuff, and it still won't come on.

I don't think it's the power supply because I noticed that when I flip the power supply's switch to "on" my optical mouse lights up.

I'm just not sure what else I can try or how to test what else it might be. Any suggestions would be helpful. thanks!

Hello all,My roommates computer will not turn on.  He can not remember the last thing he was doing on it or when he turned it off last, but now it will not turn on.I do not have another PSU to check but their is a LED on the motherboard that indicates when the power is connect and it is light up.  Still, when I push the power switch nothing happens.  I have taken a switch out of an old computer and tried that, which doesn't work either. It is a custom built PC:COOLMAX V-400 ATX v2.01 400W Power SupplyAMD Athlon 64 FX-55 ClawHammer 2.6GHz Socket 939 ProcessorEVGA 123-K8-NF47-AX 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 ATX AMD MotherboardTwinMOS 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Desktop MemoryGECUBE GC-HM13GE2-D3 Radeon X1300 512MB(256MB on Board) 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video CardWindows XPI have no idea what could be going on here.  Maybe burnt out mobo or CPU?  Any ideas??Thanks!!

That tiny LED on the MBoard is no indication of the health of the PSU...i would borrow another PSU of the same or greater wattage and start from there...

I have a Dell Dimension 5000. For the last few months I have intermittently been unable to switch on the p.c. The first time it happened the button I press turned to flashing orange instead of green and pc wouldn't power up. Even when i disconnect it from the mains the power button will still remain lit as orange for a while. I put it into the local repair shop and when they pressed the button it started first time. They checked everything inside the p.c. but could find no faults. motherboard, fan, power unit etc working fine. Cost me 60! I've turned off hibernation , stand by etc. If i leave the p.c. for several hours it will switch on. it's really frustrating. Does anyone have any clues what has gone wrong?

Answer:Computer won't turn on.

I had a Power Supply that acted like this once. It's impossible to deduce what may be the problem, many different parts might cause it - you'll only find out by substitution. Try unplugging the PSU from the motherboard, and firmly replacing the connector first - then try another PSU."Even when i disconnect it from the mains the power button will still remain lit as orange for a while."That's normal - it usually takes a fair few seconds for the power from the PSU to die fully away.

My computer was working just fine, then one day, I couldn't turn it on.  The fans work but there is no image on the monitor and no power to the mouse or keyboard.  The "on" light is on, but the fans seem to be the only other thing working.  Another site told me to reset the CMOS by pulling a piece off of two pins then putting it on another two, then putting it back but that didn't work and I hope it didn't screw it up even more.  Can anyone help me? I really don't want to take it to the repair shop if I don't have to.  Thanks!

Hi

It has just recently started to happen but when I log off, it goes through the motions as normal but instead of turning completley off it just goes to a black screen and sits there and the power to the tower is still on and the only way I can shut it down properly is to press and hold in the button on the tower. Here is a log of my HiJackThis if you require it.

Okay well my computer has been taking an age to start up for a while now but no matter what I searched for I never found anyone with a similar problem on other forums and thus could never find an answer. I can't really afford to go get it repaired right now so I've just been living with it for months; essentially I get the initial splash screen, the windows loading screen and then blackness for ages! Sometimes the screen is black for a good six to eight minutes, then a little cursor appears in the centre and I'm brought to the screen where I can pick which user I want to log in to. From there it's all fine.

Ever so often though, the computer just hangs at the black screen forever, so I have to power it down with a hard reset, then restart and a menu comes up after the initial splash screen asking if I want to run startup repair. Whenever I do that it seems to get me back working again (still with a very long boot time) but it will uninstall either Google Chrome or ITunes. I don't think it's because either program is the problem, I think it's just cause the updates get corrupted when I use the restore manager to reset back to a prevous working state of my computer. Either way, I re-install them and they soon work fine and dandy. My problem is now that the computer won't turn on at all. The black screen holds forever and the startup repair manager says this is a problem it can't fix and simply sends stats to Microsoft.

It did reco... Read more

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3542. It was working perfectly then all of a sudden the screen went black and the computer shut down. I plugged the charger in which the light on the adapter stayed green but the computer light didn't show it was charging. I also tried removing the battery, holding the power button for 20 sec, then plugging in the charger to turn on but it still didn't work. I ordered a replacement battery and charger and it still will not come on. Could it be the charging port needs replacing or could it be the motherboard?

Hello experts from all around the world !My friends I am in shock: I have a DELL Precision 360 with two Hard Drives of 500 GB and 4 GB of RAM, I never turn it off since I use it a lot at all times. Well my friends last night it happened the unexpectable: after I defragmented my Hard Drives (which I make once per week) and I cleaned my Recycle Bin, I re-started it as I always do. O.K., then it appeared from nowhere a medium size black color rectangle occupying around 1/3 of my screen and the mouse didn't work properly, I mean the arrow was very erratic and I couldn't even to point it out the "Start" buttom; so the only option I had was unplug everything from the wall (actually from my dedicated Sub Station), hoping that any problem will be cleared afger that re-start.But after I connected the PC back to the Substation and I pushed the "on/off" buttom of my console nothing happened, it just did not work at all. So now my friends now I have no PC at all. I am writting this post from the laptop of my daughter.I wonder if the problem has something to happen with the Power Supply ? although I have four 21" CRT monitors I have had never one single problem with it before. Or perhaps the problem has something to do with the battery of the PC ? I don't know what the problem is, so please help me my friends, I am lost without my PC...Thanks in advance for your insights and suggestions. Best, Antonio.

Hi,

I have recently installed a new DVD-RW drive in my pc, which went well, until i tried to use the drive to run the software disc.
The drive had played a dvd ok, while i was testing if it worked, and initially the software disc worked also, i left the room, and when i returned 2 minutes later, the computer was off and won't turn back on.

Note- the inside of the pc has lights on, from the tv card, which makes me think that its not the power supply, however nothing else turns on.

I would appreitiate any help on the matter,

ps. i am in the process of buying a new psu to try and see whether that will fixd it, is there any reason i shouldn't use it, like will it blow that one as well???

Thanks for your help, Jwils

Answer:Computer won't turn on

it sounds like the power supply,if it goes fans ect. can still operate as they do not pull much power
before you buy check your requirements here
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
based on a quality supply and add 30% to the result
and then get as large a supply you can afford above what is required to allow for future upgrades
you get what you pay for, generic supplies are cheap and nasty always go for quality
antec
enamax
you have a fair idea of quality by the price

Grandson brought us his friends computer yesterday to look at. He said when the problem began that he was sleeping and it just turned on and off by itself. I asked if it had been left on and he said NO. So I have never heard of this before, but now there is no power to it at all. My hubby has all sorts of meters etc to check if there is power to a specific thing. He checked the switch and it is ok. He checked the power supply and it does not measure up to what it should, so it could be the power supply which is what I suspected. But before we buy a power supply, how can we be sure it is not the mother board? Is there a way to know that for sure? It is an E-machines, windows XP. I know that E-Machines are not the best, so that could be a problem in itself lol..

So recently my computer would not turn on. So I automatically thought it was either my psu or my mobo. Since I was already going to buy another psu I just went for it and bought one. I installed it, and upon pressing the power button it fired up, I was happy.About 3 minutes later, after I was already on the internet, it shut down again. I pressed the power button to try to turn it on and nothing happened. So I tried changing sockets on the wall for some reason, and it worked. Computer came back up, I checked the bios for overheating but I was running at 34 degrees so I continued starting up, only to find the computer shut down upon window's startup.I tried plugging the cord into a different socket and every time it fires up again for only 2 seconds now. If I dont change the plug then nothing happens whatsoever. If I leave the computer alone for long enough, then I am able to use it for longer without it powering off, which I would believe would be linked to overheating but the temps are completely fine.Any Ideas? Please

Hi, my computer, a better one, cant even turn on! i press the power button but nothing happens, its like it doesnt even feel it. I see 1 light on the bottom and no fans run so it just shows a tiny light. Ok, this is wut happend, after school, i ran up stairs to turn my comp on, it worked, then my dad came up and said i bought u a new fan, so i shut my comp down and installed it. I turned my comp back on and nothing happened, just like what i said above. I removed my fan and still, it will not turn on! Can some1 help me whats wrong with my computeR? Could it be the motherboard or powersupply? i have K8V Se Deluxe for mobo and a generic 500w for power supply, i do not smell any burned smell and it was working perfectly fine before...

Answer:Computer will not turn on!

It could be a lot of things. Is the "small light on the bottom" the LED on the MB? What kind of fan was this?

When I turned it on in the morning. It booted normally and then it got a blue screen and then I turned it off and it wouldn't turn on anymore. The mouse and keyboard and monitor won't turn on. The only thing that works is the CD drive it opens and closes. Where the power button is I kept pressing it and the light won't turn on anymore now I don't know whether it's on or off.The error that I got was 000000000*15?

Answer:Computer won't turn on?

Try to disconnect everything from your computer apart from the mouse KB and monitor remove the power cable then press the ON button for 30 seconds or so to discharge whatever power might still be in the system and let it sit for 10 - 15 minutes then reconnect the power cable but not anything else you disconnected and see if it boots. If that doesn't work there are other things to try but try this first. Also it's always helpful if you complete the details of your system in your System Specs section of your profile

hi I've got a machine with an intel 810 chipset, pcchips motherboard, and 466 processor running win2000prof and it doesnot turn off.

What happens is that you shutdown and it goes to the now safe to turn off your computer screen then just stops without turning itself off.

That I wouln't mind but when you hit the power switch on the case it does nothing the only way to turn it off is to switch it off at the wall.

After switching it off on the wall when you turn the wall switch back on it behaves as normal (that is it doesn't start) and when you want to start it again just hit the case power button and it starts, but of course wont fully turn off.
Any ideas? Motherboard; Bios; (Powersupply ok newish)
