X1 Carbon touchpad and trackpad stops working.

Question: X1 Carbon touchpad and trackpad stops working.

Received my new X1 Carbon 2014 this week. After only two minutes of use, the trackpad and toucphpad stopped working. I hade to use an external mouse, and even after all driver updates it still didn`t work. If I restart the machine, sometimes the track-touchpad will work, but suddenly it freezes up again (after only minutes of use), and I will have to restart to fix the problem. Have used it for 5 hrs now, and how probably restarted about 30-40 times. Anyone know what is causing this problem and/or how I can fix it? //alex

Preferred Solution: X1 Carbon touchpad and trackpad stops working.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

HI All I am in need of help please i have a X1 Carbon that was Recently purchased for a user at our office. But as you can tell from the subject of this topic the touchpad and trackpad stops working working after a few minutes of working on the machine.  I used Lenovo System Update to update all the drivers to the latest version and this was not successfull, I then tried a reinstall  of windows and the manually downloaded the driver from lenovo website and installed it but still no luck. I have checked and they are not disabled in the Bios and they are not and the Bios is on the latest version I have also tried to let it run on the windows driver that downloads from windows but also it stops working. from what it looks like the trackpoint and touchpad disable cause when i go into the mouse properties the option to enable them both is greyed out i then log on as the local admin to see if it is a permission thing but it is also greyed out. This happens regardless if the machine is on battery or plugged inThis user travels  alot and needs them both to be working.  I came across the below forum but i dont see much of a response from lenovo.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-touchpad-and-trackpad-stops-working...

The trackpad and touchpad of my Yoga stops working: the cursor freezes and after a while disappears from screen. Once the cursor is gone it does not appear again, even after a clean reboot. I have tried to enable it via the Control Panel Mouse settings or Input section of ?Lenovo Settings? application but had no success.
The problem has happened several times so far, always after the laptop sleeps due to inactivity. The only way I have found so far to bring the trackpad and touchpad back is by going to the BIOS settings and restoring the default configurations (I have never changed the BIOS settings on this PC, so I can?t figure out why this solves momentarily the problem).

Any ideas on why this problem is happening, and how to solve it without messing with the BIOS settings?

This is becoming really annoying, it has happened three times since yesterday (10/23/15).

My BIOS version when this first happened was 1.26 (GQET46WW), my current BIOS version is 1.27 (GQET47WW). My laptop runs Windows 10 Pro (automatically updated from the Windows 8.1 version delivered with the laptop).

Answer:Yoga - Trackpad and touchpad stops working

Hi jrojasledesma Can you post the model of you Thinkpad Yoga? You can try updating the mouse driver of your Thinkpad, but it is important to know the model to see if it has a ELAN, ALPS or Synaptics mouse. Regards

The touchpad on my X1 Carbon laptop (3443CTO) has started working very sporadically. It seems that it will work after reboot, but then after a while it stops working. I suspect that this is a driver and/or bios issue, because this started happening about the same time I upgraded the bios to the latest and also upgraded to Windows 10. Has anyone else experienced this issue? AFAIK, all of my Lenovo and other drivers are up-to-date, as the Lenovo Companion tools does not list any pending updates. Any ideas?

I am experiencing an annoying problem - my trackpad stopped working. I have narrowed it down to a driver issue. Because if i uninstall the "Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav"-driver the trackpad starts working. As soon I install it again it stops. I have tried rebooting and it's no difference. When the driver is installed I cannot even the "Mouse" dialog in control panel.  I have tried the latest drivers: 18.0.7.40 as well as the previous driver. Same result. I have downloaded the drivers through the website as well as with Lenovo support app.  My model is the new X1 Carbon, model: 20A7005UM5 not even 2 weeks old. It worked until yesterday. The only thing done since is the regular update by Windows 8.1. I even tried a system restore before the updates but now there is no difference.  I want to point out that, when driver is uninstalled, the trackpad works, but without all the functionality. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Regards,Jan

Hi, Since i've upgraded my laptop (T440s) to win10 (fromwin8.2) the trackpad and the touchpad have been disabled. I've tried to downgrade my touchpad driver and it works approximately (just the click and the trackpad and i can't access to the configuration panel: ultranav). I've already tried to find the last driver on Lenovo website but it didn?t fix it. Is there a driver that works propely with win10 ?  If not, is there another way to fix touch/trackpad? If not how can I force my computer to stay on the previous driver after reboot (win10 automatically update my drivers at each reboot)? Many thankstd

Hi, After installing Windows 10, I began to have issues with the left click button on the touchpad.  The left click suddenly stops functioning, and it does not work again until I reboot the computer.  It is not a hardware issue as I have tested this by changing the functionality between the left and right buttons, at which point the left button works again.  My sense is there is a bug in the touchpad's driver software under the new operating system.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall drivers, I have scanned to ensure the computer does not have a virus, and I have reinstalled the operating system.  None of this solves the issue.  The left mouse click on the touchpad will still suddenly stop working at some period of time after using the computer (generally after leaving the computer idle and later resuming use).   Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions are welcome.  Is it a bug in the driver software for the touchpad that needs to be fixed for Windows 10?   Thanks you!

Hi, I have an issue where my Lenovo X1 Carbon 3rd Gen 20BS has an issue with trackpad and touchpad that have stopped functioning completely after 3 months of usage.  I've contact support and the technician recommend me the part replacement so Lenovo send me the new keyboard and i was able to do the keyboard replacement myself into the machine.. However, only touchpad is now working. Trackpad stil not working. I've tried downloading the latest ultranav driver from lenovo website and latest driver from Synaptics to replace my existing one, none have work.. I've tried uninstall the synaptics pointing device as well as Synaptics SMBUS driver and restart, problem still there.  I've upgrade BIOS to the latest version, still not working. Disable and Re-enabled both Trackpad and Touchpad in BIOS, still not working. I'm super upset right now. Any suggestion?

Answer:Lenovo X1 Carbon 3rd Gen Trackpad stop working

Hi sarachaib0680, Sorry to hear about your trouble.

Why not have Lenovo fix it under warranty? My experience with depot repair in the USA is good - usually 3 days if the part is in stock. You can remove the SSD before sending.

Otherwise if the TrackPoint is not working, look for a connector cable which is not properly seated.

Hope this helps!

As per the topic name - I have disabled the trackpad in the BIOS (I only use trackpoint) in order to save some extra battery, but it looks like the trackpad is still recognised and working in Linux.  Is there something wrong with the BIOS setting? Is it working at all?

For some strange reason, the trackpad gestures to scroll or whatever is no longer working. I use to be able to scroll down a webstite using the 2 finger dragging down gestures. Is there a fix for this?  I think it stopped working after I ran some Windows 10 update the other day.

Hi, everybody!I just received my X1 Carbon two weeks ago and was rather concerned about the fact that the buttons above the UltraNav trackpad stopped working on the second day. All the settings are fine - in fact, I even tried resetting them to default several times and rebooting, and yet that still didn't solve the issue. The buttons won't work. I kind of dropped the issue at that point, but now it's gotten serious, as my right corner trackpad key all of a sudden stopped responding correctly in the middle of... well, nothing actually, basic work. At first it did not respond at all, and at the moment it functions in the same way as the rest of the trackpad -  it only does left-button clicking (opens and selects instead of showing a context menu).I hadn't changed any settings at the time, so that cannot be what caused it. Chainging the settings now to other right-key options, e.g. setting it to open the Start menu doesn't change anything - the right key keeps working as though it were set to left-click. Otherwise, I use W7 (although W8 was preinstalled) and haven't messed with the drivers. My TrackPoint is disabled, but I checked and it doesn't make a difference. [Please tell me this isn't a hardware issue, aw man] Thanks!

At several occasions now, my trackpad two-finger-scrolling stops functioning as it should after some time of using the system. It seems the gesture is still recognized, but it is handled incorrectly: rather than scrolling 'within' the selected window, the whole window seems to 'bounce' indicating I can't scroll any further. Scrolling with an external mouse works fine, as does scrolling with the touchscreen, as does moving the mouse to the scrollbar and click-dragging.
I have updated all latest drivers, except the BIOS which is on A06 since I do not want to upgrade it (yet) since the higher versions currently cause the screen's brightness to flicker. Unless this BIOS is known to address these issues (not listed in the details) I do not see a reason to upgrade it (again).
Worth noting is that this issue only seems to arise after some time of using the system (possibly after a few sleep sessions?).

Hi I'm using an Acer Aspire 5942, which I got about 5 days ago, It was all going fine until yesterday, when I was using the mouse it randomly stopped working, so I restarted my laptop and it worked fine, today the same thing has happened twice.
The little Synaptics icon in the taskbar shows that there is a finger on the trackpad, but plugging in a USB mouse works.

Hello there, I have this ThinkPad T440p where the trackpad mysteriously stops working after I put in in standby from the menu. However, it doesn't happen when it does go to standby by itself as per power management. Symptoms:When waken up from a manual standby, often the trackpad stop working. The mouse cursor doesn't move, and buttons are not active. Only the trackpoint can move the cursor, or an external mouse. The screen brightness buttons also stop working. In Device Manager, no peripheral is reported as malfunctioning, and even trying to switch settings in the Trackpad preference pane does not help. Why is this computer having such an annoying bug?

Today my x201 has lost all trackpad and touch pad function.   Hard disk constantly running.   No restore points listed to help remove the problem.   Everything works okay in Safe Mode.   Rebooting several times has not helped. Could this be related to the Microsoft Bad KB.......69 update? I have not installed any new software recently. I can only use the pen to access menus.    How can I remove recent KB installations using just the pen? Hope someone can help me soon Update:   I have managed to remove the bad MS update but to improvement.   Next I added a new user (also set as administrator) and the trackpad and touch pad function is now working normally but only with the new user account. Would someone tell me if I can remove my own Administrator Account and what effect this will have,  i.e. what data might I lose?   Can I save data and reinstall it to a new account?

Answer:Trackpad and touchpad not working

Hi Beemer,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that trackpad and touchpad is not working properly in your Lenovo ThinkPad X201.

Since the devices work fine in safe mode, probably a corrupted driver is causing the issue. Go to control panel -> Device manager, uninstall the drivers listed under Mice and other pointing devices. Restart the system and let Windows install the generic drivers for the device. Check if the trackpad and touchpad works fine now. Later, you may download the drivers from Lenovo Support page and install them. If you have any difficulties in finding the driver, please share the MTM number of your device.

Hope this helps!

Hiya I bought an Aspire E15 laptop and the trackpad on it is most unusual.  If I put my finger on and move the pointer around and around the pointer will suddenly stop moving after afew seconds and won't work again unless I remove my finger from the pad and start again.  Sometimes it takes three or four attempts to make it work again.  It also seems a comple gamble as to whether I can drag a scrollbar.   What information do you need from me to help diagnose the problem please?  Thank you!

Answer:Aspire E15 Trackpad issue - stops working intermit...

I am not sure what E15 you have but I will go by one I know or think I know anyway.. Aspire ES1-512-C1W0 as called a E15 If you go to the Acer page for Drivers and what not maybe it could be as easy as installing a new driver... Have you tried the update of the driver off Acers website? Also what Version of Windows are you using now? If it was a problem when you first got the Laptop and you tried to restore the software ot update the drivers and it didnt work right I would have taken it back for a replacement...  If you are having an issue with your Trackpad after you have updated to Windows 10, They do have for this model anyway Windows 10 drivers. http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers/5611;-;Aspire%20ES1-512  It could be just needing a new or good driver... I am not sure and I can't say that I have had any issue with the E15 other then some normal that a restart solves.  James

"HP Pavilion dv6-2157wm Entertainment Notebook PC"

Here's the list of things I've tried and I'm not sure what else to do:
sfc /scannow
chkdsk C: /f
Updated the BIOS
Uninstalled Synaptics driver, re-installed newest version
Uninstalled Synaptics driver, tried letting Windows Update install driver
Generic USB drivers are not allowed to be turned off to save power
"Hard Reset," unplugging A/C and battery and holding power button for 30 seconds
Tried safe mode; no avail
Looked for FN keys to turn it on/off, there are none
Tried pressing the button above the trackpad to turn it on/off; light just stays white
Here's a picture of the light:

I don't know what else to do. I've been told to try to take the hard drive out and look under it, there could be a loose wire that attaches to the back of the trackpad. But before I dive into taking the computer apart, I just wanted to eliminate all of my options. Maybe there's something I'm missing that someone else will be able to point out with no issue.

Here's a picture of the Mouse > Synaptics tab:
...actually as I'm typing this, for the first time, I received an error saying, "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver, Do you want to uninstall the driver now?" (That's the first time this has happened.)

Here's a picture of device manager:

There are no errors/exclamation points.

Hey guys, I'm having problems with the touchpad buttons: the system can't distinguish a left click from a right click. Whenever I click one of the two buttons the system reads it as if I'm clicking on both and keep pressing. I tried also to disable them and use the trackpad but also those buttons are not working well. They just work for a couple of minutes and then they stop. However if I run the Thinkvantage suite they seem to work fine and the system reads the click properly. What do you think is wrong? Thanks

Answer:Touchpad and Trackpad Buttons not Working

Today I noticed both my touchpad and joystick stopped working.  I could move the cursor but the clicks would not register.  I restarted and it worked again.  I recall a couple of days ago I updated the drivers, one of them I think was for the touchpad.

Unfortunately, the trackpad and touchpad of my T460p stop working intermittently. The problem seems to occur after the laptop is going into hibernation. When it boots up afterwards, neither the trackpad nor the touchpad or the mouse buttons work, and the device manager shows the Synaptics device having a hardware issue. The problem persists when rebooting the system and even when using a different operation system (e.g. Ubuntu via a Live USB). I tried upgrading the Synaptics drivers (v19.0.19.1), which does not solve the problem though. I also tried different driver versions (e.g. the ones offered on the Lenovo site), without success. I encountered this problem both on Windows 10 Home & Windows 10 Enterprise Edition, as well as various Linux flavors (Ubuntu, Fedora). The only workaround that I found is to shut down the laptop, remove the battery and reboot it afterwards, which seems to reset the faulty state the touchpad is in. I strongly suspect that this is a problem with the firmware of either the mainboard or the Synpatics device itself, which puts it into an invalid state when going into hibernation. For now, I disabled hibernation mode, which avoids the problem but is not ideal of course. Did someone else run into this problem? Any ideas how to permanently fix this? I'm very happy with the T460p otherwise but this problem just drives me crazy as it's impossible to use a laptop without touchpad/trackpad when traveling.

Hello all, 3 days ago, on June 14, the touchpad on my Twist s230u stopped working. No apparent reason for this (tried to undo windows updates / system restore but did not help). The trackpad is not working also. Another thing - when the computer does a full shutdown and restart from the beginning (i.e. with the possibility of accessing the BIOS with Enter at the first screen), the keyboard is not working. I have to power the computer down once more and restart it. I'm running Windows 8.1, 64 bit. I tried to reinstall the new synaptic drivers but it did not help. Thank you in advance for your ansers. Cy

I recently got the Ideapad S400 touch, and for the most part it works fine. However, the trackpad often becomes erratic, and the most annoying thing it does is randomly stop its scrolling feature (two fingers on the trackpad to scroll). Usually if I restart the computer, it works again, but I'd like to find a better solution. Any ideas?

Dear Community, Both me and a friend of mine have Lenovo W540s.  Everything was working perfectly fine with all of our hardware, until today.  A BIOS update came out and installed correctly on both of our machines.  After this update both of our UltraNAV features on the trackpad are all dead.  After that first restart a message appeared "finding new hardware" and it found a generic mouse on the laptop.  Now when I try to re-install the UltraNav drivers, it says no hardware found.  I tried both the drivers on Lenovo.com and the manufacture's website all with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix our UltraNav pads?   Thank you!-Frank

Answer:UltraNav Trackpad stops working after newest BIOS update 12-05-2014

Hi, for some reason Touchpad and Trackpad stop working suddenly. It looks like this:1. First all works fine.2. Then only mouse movement works. Taps and clicks do not work.3. Later on move movement stops working too. Reboot does not help. Removing battery does not help. But.If I disable Trackpad and Tachpad in BIOS.Then Save BIOS SettingsReboot into BIOS again.Enable Trackpad and Tachpad in BIOS back.Boot to Windows. Touchpad works ok.  This laptop is new - in period when different defects not detected at the factory - start to appear, so I am not really surprised. But couple weeks ago I updated BIOS via Lenovo System Update. And I kind of remember the problem did not manifest before BIOS update. Today I've updated BIOS from file without checking aht version I was running. Now it's 2.16 and problem is there. I personally think it is just faulty hardware and BIOS update was just a coinsidence. Now more details. Both Windows 8.1 and Linux are affected.Just reinstalled W8.1 with update.'PS/2 Mouse driver' is present in Device Manager and Windows does not show any problems.(Same if UltraNav driver is installed).Problem is still there if I remove Microsoft wireless mouse receiver from USB.All Windows Update updates.Nearly all Lenovo updates, even tried to install FIngerPrint software.  Is it a known issue? Is the only way is to go to Lenovo service for physical repair? Maybe I just need to revert to some older BIOS version??? ... Read more

This has been a problem that I've been having since the original trackpad driver Lenovo put out when Windows 10 was officially released.  I've seen other people mention they have the same problem, but there's still no solution.  Problem: After the Yoga S1 goes to sleep or hibernates, the trackpad doesn't work.  The cursor doesn't show up on the screen until I move the TrackPoint or if I have an external mouse connected.  The only thing thing functional is the trackpoint and physically pushing the trackpad for right and left click.  Gestures, tap to click, etc. do not work.  The problem has been consistent with every driver version up to and including the latest 19.0.17.2 that Lenovo put out on 9/7.   The only way to get the trackpad working again is to uninstall the synaptics driver, reboot, reinstall driver, reboot again.  Probem returns after waking up the computer after going to sleep or hibernate.   I'm forced to use driver version 19.0.19.1 directly from synaptics.  The trackpad works perfectly, but the right and middle buttons (at the top of the trackpad) for the trackpoint do not work since it's just a generic driver.   Lenovo has put out at least two new drivers since this problem has popped up  and others have complained about it on this forum and still hasn't been fixed.

I'll be using my computer, everything seems fine and then all of a sudden the touchpoint just stops working.  That's usually the first to go, and a couple times following the touchpoint not working, the buttons above trackpad along with the trackpad wouldn't do anything when clicked.   If I restart my computer it seems to remedy the above issues like nothing ever happened.  Anyone else experience this or have any fix ideas? The touchpoint is my life and I find myself restarting my computuer about a couple times a day to get it back.

Answer:X1 Carbon Touchpoint stops working out of no whree

Hi, verbs

This sounds like it could be an issue with the driver running the TrackPoint. There are two things we can try to both determine and attempt to remedy the situation: Remove the current driver and then install another one if necessary.

The first thing you will need to do is to remove the UltraNav driver from the system. To do this, open the Start menu and type Device Managerinto the Search box, and then press Enter. Once here, double click on Mouse and other pointing devices, and then right-click on the UltraNav device. Naviage to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall and then restart when prompted by Windows. Windows should install a generic driver to run the TrackPoint. After uninstalling UltraNav, I would recommend installing the Synpatics driver for the best performance. The driver can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I have a X1 Carbon and the fingerprint reader stops working intermittently.  I was going to order a new reader, but discovered that when it is not working, I get the error below regarding the USB address.  If I uninstall that device and reboot, the fingerprint reader magically returns.  Does anyone know what is causing this?  could it be a hot disconnect from the docking station?  Is the reader faulty and need replacing? Thanks.

What I know about this problem is that it's a software (driver) bug.  We're still waiting for a fix from the supplier, Synaptics.

Answer:X1 Carbon 5th gen Touchpad not working

I have the same problem. This is also effecting the gen4 . With the latest "n1cgr16w.exe". First, it takes a long time to switch between tabs in "Synaptics Control Panel", Ok", "Cancel" is taking forever to close the dialogbox. Also no checkbox can be selected in "Scroll" tab. This latest driver literally does not work. It CANNOT even provide the simplest functionality. Need to rollback the changes asap.  Thanks

So I have had a very... VERY... irritating problem with my Thinkpad. For the first 6 or so months I had the laptop it worked fine. Then, the left click on the touchpad was functioning like the right click (bringing up a menu).  I immediately disabled the touchpad and then used the trackpad right and left clicks which worked perfectly. After another 4 or 5 months, those buttons stopped working altogether. I could still use the touchpad to move the arrow, but I couldn't click on anything. I bought an external USB mouse and that worked fine for another 2 months. Then for a few weeks, it would work on and off. I'd have to wiggle it around in the USB ports to get the laptop to recognize it. (it had nothing to do with the ports... there were 3 of them and they all worked fine). Then it stopped working completely, AND, my laptop refuses to acknowledge ANY USB I plug in.  I have run out of options now. I can't even install anything, download any files from lenovo website. I can't do anything. Does anyone know if it is still salvageable? Has anyone had the same problem? The lenovo digitizer for tablets.... would that work for this thinkpad? (sorry... not as tech savvy as the rest of you) Thanks a bunch,Amanda

Go into the BIOS (press F1 during the initial bootup) menu then go into CONFIG -> Keyboard/Mouse -> Disable both the TrackPoint and Touch Pad -> press F10 to save and exit.

Hi guys, I am trying to maintain my doughter's school aptop but encountered something exceding my limited expertise. Since about 10 days the touchpad, buttons and the red thingie stopped working. I have read all the forum issues, uninstalled the drivers and re-installed new ones (first through the lenovo sulotion centre, then the synaptics generic version). About 6 times now. That didn't work. It says "component not present, not working correctly or divers not fully installed, error 24" (translation from Dutch, probably used some incorrect terms).Running windows 10 on this t420. All worked fine untill this happened. I saw that some new mouse drivers have been installed around the day of malfunction but can't find how or where to remove those (still getting used to this windows 10).Any suggestions?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T420 trackpad and touchpad right/left click stopped working

So far, there's just 2 of us with trackpoint / touchpad problems as a result of installing Windows 10.  My post:  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T420-Win-10-Pro-Ultra-Nav-19-00-12-61-Tr... I've combed through this forum and have no one else reporting these same issues; most are reporting that left and right click buttons are working, but the middle button did not work.  In my case, it was the opposite; the middle button scrolled (albeit very choppy), and the left / right buttons were dead.for my Trackpoint.  It's not a hardware issue, as all buttons function as normal in Win 7, but upon installation of Win 10, the buttons do not work.  I went so far as to do a clean install of Win 10 to ensure there were no conflicts between Win 10 and any leftover Win 7 system files, only to end up with the same old left and right button problems. So until the Ultra Nav drivers to enable full functionality of trackpoint / touchpad device, the only solution is to use a physical mouse or revert back to your prior operating system.

So, during the windows installer, no mouse. I couldn't see the pointer, neither the touchpad or trackpoint worked. I managed through using the keyboard, then once I got to the desktop I installed the "Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad" driver and rebooted. Still not working. I installed the thinkvantage system update, it detects no updates. I installed the service bridge. No updates. I then made a linux live USB that I use to install manjaro on all my laptops, yes everything worked out of the box on my previous x1 carbon. Touchpad doesn't work, xorg doesn't even recognize any touchpad present. Anyone else have this? Any solutions? This is actually my 2nd X1 carbon; the first works well but the mouse buttons are loose so Lenovo promised waived restocking and shipping with the purchase of a new order of equal or greater value; I ordered another one with plans to return the first one, because I really needed to keep it for work while I waited for the new one. The new one is actually flawless in terms of build, mouse buttons are solid, the CMOS battery is not loose and producing a rattling noise as it is in the first one, and the bottom cover doesn't have the clicking noise that so many are afflicted with. Really I'm willing to try anything to fix the touchpad.

Answer:New X1 Carbon, touchpad and trackpoint not working at all

Hi.

Just in case here it is a pointer to the Support site of the X1 Carbon.
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/x1-carbon-help

I guess you have the 5th Gen, can you validate that?

What about the driver listed on the support site of the 5th Gen ? It seems to have some Synaptics driver and even some firmware update for it. Have you tried installing those ?

If you don't have the 5th Gen please specify the model to find the correct support site.

Regards

Is there a way we can change the touchpad Reverse scrolling option (Scroll --> Two Finger Scrolling --> Switch Direction) on the X1 Carbon through an automated way. We see that after Windows 10 upgrade, the scroll option on the touchpad has been changed. So doing it manually it works but we want to automate it either through a registry change or some other method. Yes manual changes works perfectly.

Recently got a new Carbon x1, and everything was working fine, but once I closed the laptop and when I woke it up neither TrackPoint nor touchpad was working. Reboots didn't help. Tried installing Synaptics drivers - it said there was no device for update. Device manager detects the touchpad as Microsoft mouse with corresponding drivers (screenshot attached).  Also tried installing update for TrackPoint from the drivers list, it said it needed a reboot to install, after reboot there was an error window that suggested trying once again, several times I saw this message.Anyone have this? Are there any possible solutions?(Searched on the forum, but the solutions were not for my case or didn't work)P.S. It would be kinda stupid for a $1500 laptop not to work because of a touchpad

Sunday night the Lenovo companion did a few updates including a BIOS update and also an update for the Synaptics, but I can't see it in the Installation History (it doesn't show up). Anyway, after that update, the touchpad doesn't move the mouse anymore. I can still click it, but it doesn't respond to any gestures. I checked in BIOS and it's enabled, I checked all possible settings and it's all enabled and on. Any ideas of what I could try? My laptop type is: 20HR-CT01WW Thank you, Iulian

I have had my Dell Inspiron 7559 for about a week now, it runs windows 10. Over the past few days the trackpad has started to not work. At first the single tap (left click) didn't work. But the left click button worked fine and the two tap (right click) worked fine too. I restarted it, single tap works again.
This happened a couple more times and I decided to investigate. There was no touchpad on my mouse settings, only a HID-compliant mouse and a PS/2 Compatible Mouse. I don't have any mice. I did a driver update for both of the above and ELAN input device showed up. I did a driver update for it and it worked ok for a couple of hours and it said it is working properly. However if stopped working again and I went back to the settings and whilst windows 10 settings said the trackpad was on, the ELAN tab on the mouse properties said that the Elan smart-pad was not enabled it and restarted. When I went back to the same settings after the restart, it was not enabled again. So I enabled it. Two hours later, the trackpad was back to not registering single taps. Enabling and disabling the ELAN trackpad appears to do nothing.
The next day, single tap stopped working and then all the buttons and taps stopped working but scroll/zoom etc still worked. I restarted and it worked again. Later on it had the issue that the trackpad would only select things on the start bar. Once you opened something you couldn't click at all. Again I restarted and it "fixed"... Read more

My touchpad suddenly has an issue where it stops working for about 5 seconds, and this occurs randomly.  I was having an issue earlier where the multi-tap function on the trackpad was bringing up cortana on its own, and I reinstalled the driver and this issue was resolved, but now the freezing issue exists.  I am using windows 10 and the drivers are up to date. If anybody knows how to fix this issue, or where I could find the solution I would appreciate the help.

I bought a brand new laptop from Dell.  The touchpad kept crashing.  After several months of calling tech support, having the laptop serviced remotely, and sending it in twice for repairs, all without success, Dell sent me a new computer.  After only three days, the same thing is now happening with the new one.
These were both brand new computers with the exact same issue.  Is Dell simply incapable of making a decent computer any more?  I used to love Dell; this was my fifth Dell computer, but maybe it's time to look elsewhere.

I bought a brand new laptop from Dell.  The touchpad kept crashing (it won't respond to taps and sometimes stops scrolling, but the right and left click continue to work).  After several months of calling tech support, having the laptop serviced remotely, and sending it in twice for repairs, all without success, Dell sent me a new computer.  After only four days, the same thing is now happening with the new one.  Now Dell says that means the problem is on my end.
I haven't downloaded any new programs, everything is up-to-date, and when I check the touchpad settings, it shows everything as being enabled.  The touchpad stops working randomly, on different websites and in different programs.  I never had this problem on any previous Dell laptops.  I can't think what I might be doing to cause this issue.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, On my Travelmate B115 (that I've barely used at all), the touchpad randomly stops working. If I deactivate it and activate it (Fn+F7 twice) it starts working again, but I have to do that once every two minutes, and it's really annoying. Sometimes it also is very slow or imprecise in its movements, and it seems sometimes that it clicks without my wanting it to (it could be that I'm grazing the pad without noticing sometimes, but I'm really writing "in the air" with only my fingers touching the computer's keys now to avoid it, and it still happens).I am extremely frustrated since this laptop is brand new. Can anyone help me?Elisabeth

Hello. My month old E560 has been great until recently, when the touchpad has decided to play up on me.What happens after a while of use, the touchpad will begin not responding to my gestures, finger movements, sliding, etc. It will sporadically work for maybe a fraction of a second after, but 99% of the time when I frantically draw circles with my finger it will not respond. This proves it is NOT the touchpad completely disabling/turning off, etc. There are no issues with the trackpoint or any hardware buttons. Even right clicking with the touchpad does what it's supposed to.  This is on the most up to date version of ALP Lenovo Ultranav drivers for the e560 from the Lenovo website. I have found that uninstalling this driver (and thus using Windows' default touchpad driver) prevents Lenovo-specific multitouch features such as twofinger scrolling, and also slightly changes what the middleclick does, but at least prevents the issue of an unresponsive touchpad which is the most important feature. Usually, a quick restart solves this issue. But after the computers shut down and started up again after a while of being off, the issue will occur again. I am running Windows 10 home 64 bit with, as said, the most recent Lenovo-issued ALPS Ultranav driver. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an Acer Aspire One D250 with a synaptics touchpad bought on March 20th which hasn't given me any problems till 3 days ago.

Friday, when I turned the computer on, the touchpad wasn't working. I tried Fn+F7 and nothing. The usual synaptics animated icon wasn't beside the clock. I went to the control panel>mouse>device settings and no device was listed there, while all the options were greyed out. I went to system>device manager and no "Mouse and other pointing devices" was listed. I went to Acer.pt (I'm from portugal) and downloaded the driver and installed it. The instalation went without problems and when I restarted the computer, the touchpad was still not working and nothing was listed on the device manager.

I called the Acer support line and the told me to restore the OS. I spent friday doing backups and I reinstalled Windows XP from Acer eRecovery Management. After all that, the touchpad wasn't working still.

Saturday was spent going to the store where I bought the netbook and trying to find a solution. Just as when I was going to give the netbook to warranty, a guy turned the computer on and the touchpad was magically working again.

I went home, all happy and warm and fuzzy inside.

Today, when I was copying my backups to the netbook again, I hit "cancel", and the icon next to the clock disappered and the touchpad stoped working again. Went to check, and nothing was listed on the device manager or on contro... Read more

If the Acer Factory Restore failed to fix it and it intermittently comes and goes its likely a hardware issue. I'd be contacting Acer again and sending the unit in for warranty service.

Now that the video flickering issue has been resolved, I am now frequently encountering a very frustrating problem with my new XPS 13 (9343).   If I stop using the touchpad for a few minutes (not sure how many, sometimes it's 1 or 2, sometimes its 30), then mouse pointer disappears completely and the touchpad does not respond.  I can click, swipe, tap, etc. but there is no pointer.  When it happens I am forced to use the touch screen to shut down the machine and restart it so I can get the touchpad and pointer to work again.  Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Answer:XPS 13 (9343) Touchpad stops working

I have the same problem. I am using Windows 10 Pro. I have tried every touchpad driver version I could find with no luck. I am currently using this driver: Cypress Semiconductor, Inc, dated 6/24/2015, version 2.5.1.72.
I often find it happening when playing a youtube video or something like that, but that's probably just because I don't use the trackpad for a few minutes while watching the video.
When it happens the mouse pointer is either completely gone, or it is "frozen" in some random position on the screen and the trackpad is not moving it. It happens once or twice a day for me, and I then restart the PC to fix - annoying.
I feel 99% certain that it is a driver issue - and that no driver has been created for the Cypress Trackpad in the PC that actually works in Windows 10. If anybody know of a driver that actually works I'd love to get the details.

The touchpad stops working randomly when the computer is woken back from sleep and it has to be rebooted to get it going agin. An externally connected mouse will work fine during that time. Is this due to a possibly faulty touchpad??

Answer:The touchpad on my V3-331 stops working randomly.

Hi Jithin1,

It is possible to be a defective touchpad. I would suggestion a few things you can try on your own before looking into service options.

Update or reinstall touchpad drivers
Refresh the PC to see if that takes care of any issues.
Reload the PC entirely if possible

If you continue having issues, contact your local Acer support team so that they can help setup services to take care of the touchpad issues you're having.

Dear all, since almost 2 years I am pretty happy with my L440.But lately, I often have problems with the touchpad becaue it suddenly stops working,no mouse moving, no touchpad-based clicking. The trackpointer still works and also the hardware buttons for left and right clicking are still working. However, depending on the task i prefer either trackpad or touchpad. I already changed the sensitivity for palm checking but no effect.  Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys.

I have never had this problem before so I don't know what to do.

While on my laptop my touchpad will randomly stop moving. I can still zoom in and out by pinching, I can right click and left click, but I cannot move the pointer . As soon as I plug in my mouse, the touchpad works again. I can unplug the mouse and it will still work for a few minutes then the problem will happen again.

I'm running windows 7 64bit,

I also have not installed anything recently.

Answer:Touchpad randomly stops working.

See if reinstalling the touchpad driver from the laptop's manufacturer's website helps.

The touchpad behaves erratically (mouse pointer goes wild when I put my finger in the touchpad, either in rest or in movement) after a few hours of gaming (if the keyboard lights are off) or after half an hour or so of general use (if the keyboard lights are on). It seems to me that there is some sort of heat-induced short contact going on. Does anybody know how to fix this? I've got a friend to bring me this notebook from the US, but unfortunately this model isn't supported by Lenovo here in Brazil. Now I may need to find a fix for it myself (or resort to workarounds). A lesson learned for my next purchase: be more careful with so-called "worldwide" warranties.

Next time it quits working try a few taps around the touchpad and see if it starts working.  If it does it might be  a loose connection inside the case.

The Touchpad stops working and is grayed in options. Trackpoint is fine. Driver reinstall helps, but not for long - the issue appears again very soon, especially after plugging in the power. No problem in Ubuntu/Linux. Any idea? Driver version is the latest one for Win7 64bit: 18.0.7.109. BIOS: GIET90WW (2.40).

I am using Windows 10 version 1703 (OS Build 15063.413) on HP Notebook 1000. And just for reference I have encountered this issue in previous versions of Windows 10 as well. Every time I clean install Windows 10 and update to install drivers, it will work fine for about 1-2 months and then suddenly out of nowhere touchpad will either stops working or keeps moving itself after 5-10 minutes of restart ( even if I don't update Windows, means same drivers version ).

Right now I have installed version 19.3.31.16 of Synaptics pointing device drivers. But I have tried to solve this issue by installing previous version of drivers as well ( version 8.xx, 10.xx, 17.xx, 19.0.19.1 ). After installing drivers the first time it works fine for about 15 minutes and then same issue!

I have noticed this btw:
Every time I put the laptop to sleep and then log on, touchpad works fine for about 5 minutes.Every time I restart the laptop, it works fine for about 5 minutes.Even If I uninstall the drivers and use basic drivers by Windows 10, the same thing happens. Touchpad keeps flickering, moving itself or would just stop working.Sometimes Upper right or left corner of touchpad will work fine while the rest of the area is unresponsive.

Have anybody else encountered this issue? How did you resolve it? I don't wanna install Windows again or keep restarting my laptop.

I currently have a HP pavilion tx2520ae laptop and now and again whilst im am working on it i suddenly get the message 'synaptics touchpad has stopped working with two options saying : close and check for a problem online and close', after this message appears the touchpad still works, however the scroll bar for the laptop does not, this is an inconvenience as i do alot of my school portfolios on my laptop, some of which are nearly 100 pages long and i am constantly editing it, so i need the scroll bar to save me time and effort.

When i restart the laptop however this problem is corrected, but after a while it appears again and constantly restarting the laptop every 10 minutes is just too much effort to waste on fixing a simple scroll bar.

When the message appeared, I had tried to go onto the mouse options on the control pannel and i got an error message saying 'unable to connect to the synaptics pointing device driver. if you have installed another PS/2 pointing driver please unistall the synaptics driver by clicking on the yes button. you then need to reinstall your pointing divce driver for your external device again.
Do you want to unistall the synaptics driver now?'

My new Lenovo W510 is running Windows 7 (x64) and some issues with my Touchpad.  The problem is my Touchpad stops working after a time. TrackPoint is still working fine, but not the touchpad. If I check the settings via "Fn + F8" I can see that "Enable Touchpad and Track Point" is activated. I switched back and forth but it doesn't seem to work. Only a reboot helps..

Thanks for you help!

Also having the same problem, touchpad stops responding but trackpad still works. A logout/login fixes the problem. Unknown cause but it happens every few days.

I own 2x Equium L40 laptops.
Both have recently started experiencing the same issue with their touchpads.

For some reason, whenever the laptops are horizontal, the touchpads don't work.
However, once the laptop is tilted, the touchpad works fine.
I can then return the laptop to horizontal, where it works, until the next time it decides to stop working!

I would have thought this was an insolated issue, but for the fact that it is happening on BOTH my laptops!
The laptops were both bought in Aug 07, and are therefore, unfortunately, both out of warranty.

Anybody experienced the same, or have any advice to offer?

Answer:Touchpad stops working when Equium L40 has been moved

Hello Nik

Your story sounds really unbelievable. I have never heard about something like this. Tilting notebook is for me not so good idea. What do you think about it? :)

Sorry but I don't know if somebody here can offer some explanation. The best thing you can do is to show it to the service. Maybe is there some contact problem. The strangest thing is that you have noticed the same issue on both notebooks.

Have you noticed this from the first second when the notebook is on or later after some time?

My M40 laptop has just started having a problem with it's Touchpad, after hibernation the the Touchpad does not work. plugging an external mouse works, I've tried disabling and re enabling through the control panel but it does not help. Powering off and then back on does fis the Thinkpad, has anyone seen this before?

Answer:Touchpad stops working after hibernation on Satellite M40

You said this problem started now. So it seems that this issue was not present in the past. Am I right?
So if I?m right then it looks more like an software problem as a hardware issue.

Usually the first step should be a new Touchpad driver installation. Then you could try to update the Windows XP OS to the latest state. You should use the Microsoft update page to get all patches.

Then download and install the cleaning tool called ?CCleaner?. Its for free and it?s very helpful to clean the OS and the registry.

If this does not help, try to reinstall the OS from the recovery CD and test if this issue persists after new OS installation.

hi there, I bought an Acer 2509. The first thing I did was formatting the hard-drive and installing my teacher licsenced Windows 8 after this the Windows 8.1 update. I installed all the drivers for the laptop. All the drivers on this site are downloaded and installed: http://www.acer.nl/ac/nl/NL/content/drivers/5452;-;Extensa%202509. The Touchpad works for 2 seconds and then (i think) the drivers crash. I do get some DistributedCOM events in the eventlog of windows.  What I tried: FN +f7 = doesnt workinstalling older drivers = doesnt work Could someone help me?

Hi,

In the beginning of this week I bought Toshiba satellite Z30-A-1D0.

My touchpad seemed fine but once in a while the cursor stops working for about 1 minute. I can use the left and right button of the touchpad but I just can't move the cursor.

First I thought that I accidentally had locked the touchpad so I pressed Fn+F9 and the light turned on meaning that the touchpad was locked, then I pressed it again and the cursor was still not moving, it only starts almost a minute after... I've tried to be at alert to what I'm doing in the touchpad but it happens when i'm just moving the cursor.

This happens about 4 times a day and the fisrt time it happened was on the day I bought. And I never used a USB mouse in this computer.

Thanks for your atention to my problem and hope you can help me.

Answer:Touchpad stops working for a moment on my Satellite Z30-A-1D0

It is not easy to say why this happen.
If possible try to use external mouse. It will be interesting to know if there is some general problem with mouse or just with internal touchpad.

so, EVERY TIME I close(and re open) my laptop lid the touchpad stops working. seemed to happen after a win X update(not upgrade TO win x) it is so extremely frustrating. the only way i can get it to respond again is to reboot. I have tried disabling and reenabling the touchpad, updating drivers, and nothing seems to help.

I noticed that the Synaptic Touchpad driver (I updated to the latest version) would stop functioning whenever I do a hard drive-intensive task. For example, When I run a virus scanner, when I convert movies, when I record anything, the Synaptics driver stops working. I can still use the touchpad, but all of the original driver features are gone and the icon from the taskbar dissappears as well. Stranger still, whenever something like this happens, I try to go into mouse properties in the control panel and it ALWAYS becomes completely unresponsive and freezes up. I cannot do anything with the touchpad control panel either. When I stop whatever I am doing to the hard drive, everything goes back to normal and the Synaptics touchpad driver re-enables and appears in my taskbar again. Help?Thanks!-Clark

Hi,

I am having this problem for over a month now, the touch pad stops working suddenly and it starts to work after a restart and sometimes after a couple of restarts.

The frequency of this issue is at least twice an hour. I am really tired of restarting all the time.
I have tried system restore but that has not helped and the function keys are not working either.

Details:
Model:SATELLITE C660-1LD
OS: Windows 7 - 64 bit
Warranty: Expired 03/2013

Answer:Re: Satellite C660-1LD - Touchpad stops working

> I have tried system restore but that has not helped

What do you mean exactly by system restore?

Did you use the Toshiba Recovery DVD or Toshiba HDD Recovery procedure to set the notebook back to factory settings?
In case you did not try that, I recommend doing this!

Fact is that this recovery procedure should fix the system/software issues and in my opinion it looks more like a software as a hardware problem.

I have an X201 and noticed tha tthe toucpad stops working at seemingly random intervals.  After tracking down the culprit to the Synaptic Touchpad Enhancements process, I did a search and found other people having the issue in the Thinkpad W series forum.  Instead of reposting it here, you can find my reply with an easy workaround to get it working again over in this thread. http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W150-Touchpad-stops-working-after-a-certain-tim... Somebody thinks the problem only happens with Firefox, which I happen to use as well, so the problem could be between Firefox and the Synaptics process. Lenovo:  Please fix this.  Thank you.

Answer:Touchpad stops working on X201 (and other models)

I'm having the same exact issue!!!  My trackpad works great after a reboot, but always eventually goes to crap and stops responding (or responds haywire) to my inputs...  I called Lenovo yesterday, and their "senior" tech guys had never even heard of the issue!?!  They told me I needed to send the unit in for repair...  Argh... Hopefully Lenovo will realize this is a "real" issue and address it SOONER than later!!! Thanks for posting your work-around...  Yeah, it kills the multitouch, but at least the trackpad starts responding again... Let's cross our fingers that this gets RESOLVED...  What a pain in the rear problem for such an expensive PC!!!

It can happen during working with laptop for few seconds or just completely goes off that I have to restart the machine. Also sometimes when it wakes up the touchpad does not respond. Please advise if I have to send it back or there is a fix for it. I have all drivers updated and lenovo companion does not find any issue regarding driver date or hardware defect.  I am really disappointed for this price tag receving such a poor quality device.  Parham

Answer:U410 touchpad Driver stops working

Most likely you're experiencing this issue when starting Microsoft Office (I did too)Here's how to fix it 1.Download the 16.3.9.0 driver from herehttp://www.station-drivers.com/page/Synaptics.htm2.uninstall your current synaptics driver and reboot when it asks you to (your touchpad will still work, just without gestures and it will move slower than before)3.Install the new driver and restart if it asks you to4.Go to the mouse properties and the synaptics tab and adjust the touchpad to your liking(here will be 2 devices listed, clicking the settings of one of them brings up manufacturer information, the other will bring up configuration)5.No more nonworking driver just so you know, resuming from sleep will cause the synaptics driver icon to appear in your taskbar even if you have disabled it from appearing there, but it will go away automaticallyand also, the 4-finger flick option in the configuration settings will not work, but everything else shouldmessage me if you need assistance

I've tried rebooting my 3rd Gen. X1 Cabon a few times but can't seem to get the touchpad Tap to Click function working again.  It stopped working after the recent BIOS update and it seems all finger gestures on the touchpad are now disabled.  Tap to Click is checked in the Touchpad settings and I've toggled it on and off a few times.  I'm on the latest Synaptics touchpad driver (19.0.17.2).   Any suggestions to kickstart touchpad gestures again?

I have a new, month-old ThinkPad T430, and whenever it comes out of sleep mode the keyboard, and sometimes the touchpad, does not work.  All of the other power management tools seem to work fine, but sleep causes the input devices to just quit. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. There was one occasion where starting it up from a hard boot rendered the keyboard inoperable as well. Is this a driver issue or do I have a defective keyboard? It seems to work just fine on all other occasions.

Answer:T430 Keyboard and Touchpad Stops working after Sleep

Hi, vbertini

This sounds more driver than hardware related. Though there was the instance of the keyboard not working after cold boot that one time, it has worked fine on all other occasions, save it waking up from sleep, correct? The fact that everything works fine more often than not leads me to believe it's the drivers.

The latest mouse and keyboard driver for your system is version 16.2.19.2 and can be found here. I would also recommending making sure your BIOS is up to date, as an outdated BIOS can be responsible for a myriad of issues. The latest BIOS for your system is 2.11 and can be found here.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

Adam

Well I sure can't find where to post this.  It's not a question it's a solution to a problem that was driving me nuts and I wanted other people to know this. If your touchpad left button stops working and not for the usual reasons - this is what will make it work again.1.  Unplug power cord if plugged in 2.  Remove battery3.  Hold down start button for about 20 seconds4.  Put in battery5.  Reboot I would actually like the whole world to know this as I have googled countless times and never found a solution that works.  I have the Acer Aspire One - not one of the locations listed either. Hope this helps someone!  DonnaB

X1 Carbon Touch running Windows 8: The Synaptic touchpad edge swipe functionality stops working mysteriously. I have not been able to determine the triggering event which causes this behavior. The edge swipe capability cannot be recovered in the UltraNav settings; in fact, the settings shows that edge swipe is still set, but it does not work. I can restore edge swipe only by reinstalling the UltraNav driver. This happens at least every couple days, and sometimes more often.

My son purchased a Lenovo G530-25 and the touchpad stopped working on the second day. I see that on other models there is a sensor button above the keyboard. Is that button on the G530 as well? Also, at this point, the laptop is not booting. It starts to boot and we hear some kind of music (or noise, perhaps) and it stalls. I can't get it to go into setup (F1) or the boot device menu (F12). Any suggestions? Thank you.Message Edited by miriaml on 05-14-2009 07:42 AM

Every now and then when my thinkpad edge 11 resumes from standby. The pointer won't move. It makes no difference if I use the trackpoint or the touchpad. When this occurs I have to restart the computer using the keyboard and then pointing devices work again. Does anyone know a way to fix this issue? The problem doesn't occur every time when resuming from standby but sometimes it does.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad stops working after resume from standby

hey won1,uninstall the current trackpoint/touchpad driver for your unit.windows should then install its own generic drivers. now with generic drivers install, place your unit on standby and then resume it.see if the same error occurs. at the same time, head over to >> http://support.lenovo.com and update your unit from drivers to bios.

I'm working out of a computer repair shop and we've got an L450 that randomly stops receiving any input from the touchpad.  It seems to particularly happen when you try to do anything "complicated" such as move the mouse as press in the trackpad at the same time, or double tap the trackpad to move something. The only way to have it start working again is shutting down and restarting the notebook completely. We've replaced both the trackpad and the motherboard, and it still happens. So it's definitely a software-side issue. It happens on both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, on both the drivers available from the product page and the newer drivers found through having Windows search for driver updates available online. After some research, I'm seeing that Lenovo notebooks seem to be a fairly common problem across many models spanning the last 5 years or so. Anyone got any ideas? The notebook is sadly 1 month out of warranty, so sending it in is no longer an option.
