Can you change the shortcut icons from Edge's to website favicons?

Question: Can you change the shortcut icons from Edge's to website favicons?

I put about ten shortcuts onto my desktop, such as ones for eBay, Google, Amazon, etc.; however, they all have Edge's standard blue icons. This makes the whole group appear as a monolithic bunch of icons that all look the same and not so easy to read. Is there a way to change these desktop icons to the various websites' favicons, making them easier to see/read/use?

I think that you can right-click a shortcut, then choose "Properties," then click on "Change Icon." However, from there, I'm stuck, because it offers me the option of browsing to the icon I want, but I don't know how to get to any favicon that I might want.

It's easy to find those websites' favicons, using Google images, and I can then save them onto my desktop, but I don't know how to get them from there onto their relevant shortcuts. I think there is a cache, called something like "shell32.icon" or whatever, which holds icons, but I'm not sure if that's anything I want to mess with, because I'm fully aware that messing with those kinds of files can lead to disastrous results, such as the computer freezing up, the 'blue screen of death,' etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Can you change the shortcut icons from Edge's to website favicons?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The problem with creating URL shortcuts is the favicon.ico is stored on a Web site, not on the computer like the shortcuts in the Start menu. And Win10 doesn't show Properties on the right-click of icons like we're familiar with on Win7 and earlier. Haven't looked for it lately but there used to be programs one could use to extract and save the favicon.ico files but the issue there was they all have the same name, have to rename each time one is saved or the next will overwrite it. One could look in the Temporary Internet Files Folder for the favicon.ico file but again they may all be the same name.

When using any version of IE Explorer, when viewing a webpage and want to create a desktop shortcut to that webpage I would simply right click just about anywhere on the webpage and select Create Desktop Shortcut from the drop-down Menu and Presto a new icon shortcut would appear on the desktop.

However, when using MS- Edge, when I Right Click on any webpage all I get is a small drop down-down menu with no selection to create a Desktop Shortcut. Please don't tell me that MS has removed this feature in Edge and I am just missing something or there is a flaw in my system. I have tried every which way to create a Desktop Shortcut of something I am viewing when using Edge to no avail.

Answer:Creating Desktop Shortcut To Website When Using MS Edge

I'm with you on this one!
So far the only way I have found is to add the page to a reading list by clicking the Star at top right, selecting Reading List and then Add.
It's not ideal but it's better than nothing.

Another roundabout way is:
While viewing your wepage in Edge,

Click the three dots at top right
Choose Open with Internet Explorer

Now you can create your shortcut as you were used to. The shortcut will open in Edge if that's your default browser.

Can change folder and shortcut icons with XP features, but is there an XP feature or 3rd party software package (possibly freeware) that can change (all extension types) file icons ?
Am looking at shareware (about $20) 'IconChanger 3.7' but not sure what file extensions it can work with (have emailed IC tech support for that list, but have not yet heard back).
Any ideas ?

Answer:How to change file/s icons in addition to folder & shortcut icons ???

I've found a couple of free ones. There's the XP Transformation Pack which will make XP look like Vista (I think). I have another one, but I can't remember what it's called or where I downloaded it from. I think I have the info at home (I'm at work right know) and if I find it, I'll be sure to post it...

Edit: here's one I found whilst Googling. It's an icon pack for about 30 or 40 different extensions....
http://interfacelift.com/icons-win/details.php?id=1928 Their home page provides access to a bunch of other icons... check it out.. If you're interested in making your own icons, there's lots of tools out there. The free ones are OK but usually limited in features. IconCool is one of the better ones, but it's not free. I Googled "XP icons" and found lots of stuff...

Edit #2: if you have seen icons already on your PC that you'd like to extract for personal use, use IconSnatcher. It will look inside EXE files and DLL files (and lots of others) http://www.snapfiles.com/get/iconsnatcher.html

I like a tidy desktop. Spartan, even. Usually this means 3-4 icons, tastefully placed and theme appropriate, one being a folder with all sorts of other shortcuts in it.
But as I was shoving my "etc" folder into the corner and trying to find a nice folded page icon to make it look like there was something under the desktop, it occurred to me...COULD something be put "under" the desktop?

I'm not really talking multiple monitors or folders or anything, but is there actually any way to have your wallpaper and desktop shortcuts (with desktop position data intact) changed with the click of a button? And then changed back with another? In a sense like changing users, but without logging in and out or having separate users, really much more rudimentary than that.
The reason for this would essentially be to have my work desktop and personal desktop just a click away from each other for when I need a quick break. No closing of programs or halting of processes, just a quick little change to perk me up mentally.

I tried searching for something like this, but my google-fu is weak and couldn't penetrate the pages upon pages of tutorials for multiple monitors or changing wallpapers. It might even be a job of a gadget, I'm not sure...but I figured if there was any place people might know something like this, it'd be here.

Even if something like this doesn't exist, knowing how many "change desktop daily" sorts of things there are I'm sure this can't be prohibi... Read more

Hi I just recently installed Windows 7on my computer.  I am trying to personalize the desktop and had downloaded a few icons for my shortcuts and changed them with no problem.  When I shut down the computer and rebooted the next day these icons were gone and just left the generic icon .  I cannot change them back. When I go into change icon off the properties tab It shows that its changed but on the desktop it is not.  Any ideas on the problem and how to fix this. Thanks

About 3/4 of my favorites, all in folders on the bookmarks bar, do not have favicons. Most of my web pages are well known like facebook, youtube, abc news and ny post. Is there a way to generate them, or is this something edge is working on.

Henry

Answer:Ms Edge and favicons.

The favicons have always been provided by the author of the Web site, I had to create one for mine then upload it to my Domain. When I go to a particular site and drag its icon to the Favorites Bar from the Address bar the favicon will show.

when i browse for files, example: press ctrl+o in wmp, theres always a fixed 4 shortcut icons on the side: my recent docs, my comp, my docs and desktop. i hardly use any of those icons and wonder how you can customize them for your own needs. i know it can be done by changing some registry keys but i forgot how to do it already. does anybody know how? thanks!

Answer:how to change shortcut icons when browsing for files?

You can't do it in Windows without installing an extra utility from Microsoft.

Go to this page on Microsoft's site, and download and install TweakUI.exe

One it's installed, open it, then go to

Common Dialogs > Places Bar

Click on "Custom places bar" and then you get up the options to select what items you would like, and where you would like to place them.

I hope this helps.

Hello Everybody,

This annoying problem has me a little perplexed, and I can't remember how to fix it!

The situation is this....I have created shortcuts on my desktop for sites that I use regularly; such as, TSF; eBay, and my Banks....when I create the shortcut, it appears on the desktop with the respective Logo for the site; however, when I have to reboot or start up in the mornings, the shortcuts are still there but without the logos..they all revert to jsut an "E"....is there any way that I can make the personilised logos remain?

I have tried things like locking the desktop, but to no avail.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....for reference, I have included a snapshot of my desktop, after I have chnged the icons to the original logos, but with one exemption this morning, and that is the TSF logo will not appear, only that revolting "E"!!

Regards,

Dave T.

Answer:Desktop [Favicons] Icons missing

Hi Dave..

one thing that may help would be to remove the favicons from your internet explorer cache and keep them in their own folder elsewhere. Then assign the shortcut icon.

If they stay in the temp files folder, they will be lost every time you clear the cache.

Hope that helps mate :-)

Hello everyone.

When using Firefox 3, the favicon (the little pictures beside the address bar) in bookmarks sometimes change to another site's favicon (for example, the BC favicon changes to the Wikipedia favicon). It doesn't really affect my browsing but I like my bookmarks organized and I want them to keep their site's favicon.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hello,
I recently purchased a new Windows 10 laptop, and it has an odd issue which my old Windows 10 machine didn't...

All the icons on the desktop (except the Recycle Bin) are showing shortcut overlays (little blue arrows on the lower-left corner of the icon) - whether the icon is an actual shortcut (just a pointer to a file/folder stored elsewhere) or whether it is a file (stored in the "C:\Users\MY_USER_ACCOUNT\Desktop" folder).

This is really irritating me, since I frequently use the desktop for temporary files (like downloads, etc) and like to clean it up every so often.

I have attempted to "restore" the default shortcut behavior via registry settings (Shortcut Arrow Icon - Change, Remove, or Restore in Windows 10 Windows 10 Customization Tutorials ) but that didn't change the issue I am seeing.

I would like the overlays to display properly - with overlays on actual shortcuts, and no overlays on files/folders located in the "Desktop" folder on disk.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!
~Heather

Hi,
I was playing with Virtualbox and decided to instal Win 7 32 sp1 Ultimate. And one of the things I noticed were that protected folders have a lock but on my host computer (the one running virtualbox) in the protected folders instead of the lock I get a shortcut.
This is what i get in the new windows installation:
And this is what I get on the same folder but in the host (the real) computer:

The host computer has Windows 7 64 sp1 ultimate so the only difference is the virtual computer has 32 and the real one 64, I don't think that affects the problem.
So, how can I get back o restore the locked icons?
Thanks

Sorry if its the wrong section.
So when i put shortcuts for websites on the homescreen on my previous Lumia 920 I got a tile that showed a "screenshot" of the website itself, this is not the case on the 950.
It's kind of hard to tell wich tile links to what website when they're all just blue with an "e" on them.
Would be awesome if someone could tell me how to change this.
Thanks, Carl.

Thanks, Carl. Not only that, certain websites (e.g. the New York Times) would actually be a live tile and show updated headlines. Now it's just a blue square. I haven't found any setting that changes this. Huge step backwards.

strange problem. it happens for all my icons, but I'll use dilbert.com as an example.

I have dilbert.com on my links bar in internet explorer, and a shortcut on my desktop. In the past, the destop and link icons take on the picture of a little dilbert. But now, only the link in ie7 has the icon, the desktop icon has a generic windows icon that looks like a window with tiny icons in it.
I changed the icon by clicking properties and change icon. when I clicked on the icon to go back to dilbert.com, the icon on the desktop changed back to the generic windows icon. But in my browser, I see the little dilbert icon by the website address.
Nowhere in my browser do I see the icon that is being used for the desktop.
I have also put other websites in my favorites list, and then created a shortcut on the desktop. The website shows the correct icon, but the shortcut, shows the same generic icon as the one for dilbert.com.
I haven't a clue how to fix this. And can't find anything like this problem on the net.

If you have your Online Banking website address in your list of Bookmarks then right click and use the Send To Desktop (create shortcut) If that option is not available then right click COPY and PASTE to desktop.
If not already bookmarked then log in to your Bank Account via your webpage and when on the home page bookmark it and then follow procedure to create a desktop shortcut. Once you see it is working then you can delete any previous one that no longer works.

How do I pin a shortcut to a website to the task bar?

Answer:pinning shortcut to website on taskbar

Hello tjs,

Welcome to Seven Forums. ]

Unfortunately, you cannot pin a shortcut to the taskbar. What you can do is pin your web browser whatever it is to the taskbar and then pin the shortcut to the browsers jump list. The other alternative is to create a new toolbar from a folder that contains the shortcut. Info here if needed: Quick Launch - Enable or Disable

Hope this helps.

Answer:Don't Know If Website Shortcut Problem Happens To You Guys

This is a virus, usually from visiting certain Chinese sites
From the Singapore Hardware Zone, this solution may work

1)delete the IE short cut on ur desktop or whereever

2)go to ur IE installation folder eg:C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer
3)look for the file iexploere.exe or explorer.exe.
4)double click it and IE should open.check if the default link is the one u encounter or not. if not proceed to next step. if still that cn website. uninstall ur IE and u can stop reading now.

5)right click and send to desktop to create new short cut.

if u are using chrome and firefox. reinstall them and delete the short cut on the desktop will solve the problem.

what the software did was to replace ur browser shortcut with their their browser shortcut to fool u that the browser u are using is IE /chrome/firefox

You can then copy/paste the shortcut wherever you want."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..."

Hi all,

I would like to have websites' shortcuts on my desktop for ease in surfing to websites which I frequent by using the steps below:

1. Right-clicked on a blank area in the currently visible web page

2. Clicked Create Shortcut on popup menu

3. Click OK to place the shortcut on your desktop

A link to this page was then created on my desktop. Through this shortcut I was supposed to be able to go to that particular web page by double clicking it.

However, it was not to be cos an error message appeared:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

Question: How do I create an file association?

Any help most welcome.
Thanks!

Dear all,

I have a problem that seems to keep reccurring with a desktop shortcut to only website. The site is an MLS website. The page loads fine if the address is typed into the address bar in IE6 (http://mls.momls.com) but for some reason when a desktop shortcut is used to open the same website a yellow icon with exclamation mark appears at bottom left of screen and there is no functionality on the page. Moreover the error occured recently after pasting some cookies into the cookie folder.

On clicking the icon the dialogue announces one of two errors: "permission denied" or "my cookie is null or not an object"

Before the actual site is loaded a password dialogue is shown both when accessing via a shortcut or when entering the address in ie6 address bar. The only difference is that there is no error when using ie6 address bar after the password has been accepted. When the shortcut is used however, the error icon appears at bottom left of screen on correct passoword entry.

I have two computers networked via crossover cable. The error only occurs on the host computer. The other computer can launch the site with no problem from the shortcut on the desktop!

I have tried everything from deleting cookies and internet files to removing ie6 (which could not be done..imho possibly due to ICS???)...the computers at our office are also running IE6 and also do not have the shortcut problem..it is only the one computer. I installed Java Runtime E... Read more

Answer:Website Cannot Be Launched From Desktop Shortcut

After downloading critical updates from Windows Update, the error resolved itself (I had re-installed XP and had not at the time of writing the topic, gotten round to updating my system from MicroSoft)

This post should serve to provide the extreme importance of enabling Automatic Updates if nothing else, so if you have 'em turned off, do yourself a favor, go turn 'em back on again and you may find your mysteries solve themselves...if not you can pretty much rely on the wizards on this forum to help you out. :-)

Could somebody tell me what's the difference between a web document and a shortcut to a website? When you right-click on web links in the start menu to check on properties, you can notice both. When you open the IE, the favorites are all web documents. What's the difference?

Thank you

Web files contain the source html code on your computer. Allows you to edit it.

Shortcuts to websites just link you to the website. The shortcut is basically like you entering the web address into an internet browser.

This is the strangest problem I've encountered.

I am accustomed to right-clicking on an icon, dragging it to a different folder, releasing the right mouse button and choosing either Copy, Move or Create a shortcut.

Beginning a few weeks ago, I lost the ability to do this with website shortcuts (i.e., shortcuts that point to a website.) Here's what happens:

I right-click on a website shortcut, drag it to a different folder, and when the shortcut is in the new folder it vanishes.

I only have this problem with website shortcuts. My default browser is Chrome, so the website shortcuts are created by Chrome.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? How can I regain my ability to drag and drop website shortcuts via right-click?

Hello! So I just signed up here because I'm desperate and don't know what to do.

So basically, I thought the windows 10 default folder icons were pretty bland and ugly so I decided to change them. I read that you could change your default icons by going into to registry and I did just that. Long story short, it didn't work so i deleted the registry folder that I had just created, like they said you could. I was very careful (or so I think) to not touch anything else

But now I'm worried I might have messed up somewhere because now I can't change icons for some of the folders I use. Not sure if this was a problem before that I didn't notice or if it's due to me messing around with things I don't understand.

As things are now, I can change icons for folders that I created but the folders that came with the system (like documents, music, movies, downloads etc) I'm currently unable to change. The thing is, I was able to change the folder icons just a while ago, so I changed them all by right clicking on the folder, choosing properties and then changing the icon, and that worked fine. Then I decided to just use the default icons anyway but I was only able to switch back some of them, and some of those now had the wrong folder icon. My "downloads" folder is just a blank white space for example and I'm unable to change it.

Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.

First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?

Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.

Please advise.

If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.

1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?

2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.

Please post back and advise on these points.

I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

I have two icons that I want to assign to two folders. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong. Let me explain what happened step by step:

1. I have two folders: "A" and "B".
2. I have two icons (.ico files): "A" and "B".
3. I place icon "A" in folder "A" and icon "B" in folder "B".
4. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
5. I notice that I've switched the icons around.
6. I move icon "A" to folder "B" and icon "B" to folder "A".
7. I rename icon "A" to "B" and icon "B" to "A".
8. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
9. I notice that I still get to see the switched-around icons that I assigned in step 4 in the large and extra large icon views. In the smaller views the folder icons are now correct.

Here's what I did to try solve this problem:

- Follow two tutorials: Icon Cache - Rebuild and Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 (for .ico files).
- Remove the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Run "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f /r".
- Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry and manually remove some registry keys that I pinpointed by looking for the registry keys that change when I assign an icon to a folder.
- Restart the computer and the "explorer.exe&... Read more

hi there

i start to get really weird problem lately...

the Explorer toolbar of windows 7 sometimes show me different icons only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, use..java? o_O

it show the icons of the last progrem i used, like if i will enter to Utorrent window, then i will see it icon on the next progrem i will try to launch like Windows defender.. (only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, and use Java, games and etc not effect by that).

however when i restart my pc the problem is fixed.. till i open progrems like Jdownloader or progrem that use Java (i think... i not test it many times yet..), or wait really alot of time when the pc is on... there is a small chance that it come from some filters or codecs because i watch animes really alot and use CCCP codec pack...

this problem happend to me long time ago and was fixed by itself.. i also format since then so i thought it was gone for good...

anyone know how to fix it? O_o

*i attach two pics , and btw i have Hebrew language OS so don't panic when you see the desktop from right to left instead of left to right ^^

Answer:making website desktop shortcut on tablet

Theres three things you can try:

1) Right click on the tab of the site you wish to keep and pin. This way the tab will automatically load each time you use Edge.

2) Favourite the site on to the favourites bar. You can show the bar in Edge's settings

3) Copy the url, then right click on the desktop, select new then choose shortcut. Now paste the url you copied into the box and finish. The icon will change to that of Edge so you will be able to open it in the future.

There are two ways to do it. The first is to go to Internet Options >advanced and take the check out of "Reuse Windows for Launching Shortcuts"
The other is to create a new shortcut to internet explorer which opens the address. Here's an example. This opens This Forum in IE.

Prior to upgrading to Windows 10 Phone (Mobile?), when I pinned a web site to the start page, the tile contained an icon representation for the web site. That made it easy to know which tile to press to go to that web site directly.
After up grading to Windows Phone 10, all of the tiles now show the E from Edge itself. Now I have a bunch of tiles all showing the same icon, Edge's E, making it hard to know what tile is a shortcut to a specific web site.

Hello, I'm using Chrome as my standard browser, but my university is using a very special online program for some testing, that I can't seem to make the plugins work and install properly on chrome.
So what I was wondering is, is there any way I can make a shortcut, that opens a URL in internet explorer. Rather then opens it in the standard browser?

Answer:can I make shortcut to website opening in non-standard browser?

Do you have a 32bit or 64bit OS? Your specs don't say. :-(

right click in the desktop, select New and then Shortcut

paste this in to start the 32bit IE on a 32bit OS:

Code:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://www.sevenforums.com
or this - to start the 32bit IE on a 64bit OS:

Code:
"C:\Program Files(x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://www.sevenforums.com
If for some reason you cannot get that to work...
...you can create a regular shortcut with just the web address
...open IE
...then drag/drop that regular shortcut into the body of IE

Shortcuts used to be indicated by a fairly unobtrusive arrow in the corner. A few days ago they changed to an overly visible white arrow in a green circle in the lower middle of the program icon. Then they changed to a gray X in the corner. Now they're back to the arrow in the green circle. What's going on?

2011dec20: Our 5 workstations and 1 server are hard wire networked. 4 of our workstations and the server are running XP something. My system is XP Pro and is about 5 years old. Couple months ago, I had just opened My Network Places, where there are 4 or 5 shortcuts to folders on our server, then went to the other room to get a number for a drawing I was going to look up in the Drawings folder on the server. When I came back, the window was still open but all the shortcut icons, even the window itself, everything was gone - nothing but white was left in their place. I tried opening and closing the window a couple times which didn't help, then I rebooted a couple times and that didn't help either. About an hour later I opened MNPs again and the one connection I needed at that time, Shared Documents, was the only connection that came up. After a bit I closed the MNPs window and reopened it. This time 3 icons came up. By the end of the day everything was back to normal. Maybe twice since then not all icons would show, but everything would return to normal very shortly. This morning I had the MNPs window open, had one of the connections open and was working in one of the folders when everything simply disappeared. Hi!
I am quite a new user of Windows Vista (not because I have ever wanted to use it, but because I was forced to do so -> standard laptop equipment).

I have a problem with icons. Recently, having installed some video codecs (_probably_ because of that), I found that my explorer (and desktop as well) icons of shortcuts crushed. It means: there are still those beautiful big and so on icons, but in their left bottom corner there is another, standard "unknown" icon present. To make it more clear I attach a small jpg with this phenomenon.

The question is - how to 'repair' them? I tried uninstalling all the programs I have installed recently - did not help.

Thank you for any clues!

Just delete them and then remake them unfortunately we don't have tweak-ui yet in Vista to rebuld them and i don't see anything else to use..

Is it possible to place different sets of icons on different desktop ?
For example, having desktop 1 empty, desktop 2 full of files, desktop 3 with shortcuts to programmes/games, etc.
Also is there a way to have a different wallpaper on each desktop, to tell them apart faster ?

My guess is all of that is not possible, given that additional desktops are not supposed to be "permanent", but rather added/deleted quickly. But maybe with a bit of tweaking ?

It appears that the shortcuts on my desktop keep having the icon changed (the arrow).
Here is what it should look like normally (I think):
Here is it with a different icon:
Here is it with another icon (from sync center?):
And another (notice the two UAC Shields on the second one):
And here with nothing at all:

What do you think could be causing this? I'm pretty sure I re-installed once and still had the problem. It seems absolutely random and rebooting doesn't really change it. Also I am not sure if this is the right thread, couldn't really figure out what fit.

Answer:Shortcut icons keep changing?

I can do things like that with Microangelo on Display.

Since I started using Firefox (set as default browser) several weeks ago, some of the Internet Shortcuts on the desktop have changed to the Firefox icon, while some remain showing the old IE icon. The ones that have changed to FF have done that on their own, I haven't done it.I don't get the FF icon choice in the "change icon" dialog for the IE shortcuts, so how can I get them all changed to the FF icon.Is it something to do with the IconCache, which I've read about, but don't know enough about to proceed.

My friend's new Sony laptop started having the icons on his desktop shortcuts change intermittantly. The usual curved arrow is on them most of the time, then they will change to a gray X for about 10 minutes, then to a green checkmark for a while, then back to the curved arrow. The only backup software he has installed is Carbonite, and the Carbonite support tech says the X's are not from Carbonite, which uses green and orange dots. (And I don't think Carbonite backs up shortcuts anyway). He does have Dropbox installed, but it is only set to monitor one folder. Any ideas?

Thanks

I'm using office 2000 in windows XP, and the graphics on the icons of the office shortcut bar are really crappy. Is there an explanation for this?

Hi,
There are two flavors of shortcuts, "*lnk" and "*url".
My "*url" shortcuts are not a problem.
However, all my "*lnk" shortcuts have been deleted (552) :-(

There is an MS documented issue when there are 4 or more broken desktop shortcuts.
If there are more than 4 broken desktop icons, then all the *desktop* icons will be deleted.
My icons that were deleted were not on the desktop.
As a matter of fact, I have several desktop lnk shortcuts that were not deleted.
So I think my problem is different.

I had several system crashes, and that is when the lnk shortcuts were deleted.
I counted the number of lnk shortcuts from my archive backup.

At first I thought this was a HDD going south.
But all my other files appear to be intact.
So this seems like a software problem, not a hardware problem.

I plan to run MS disk check, and then copy the lnk shortcuts from backup.

I searched around and did not find any report similar to mine.
Is there anything I should try before running disk check and copying shortcuts back?

I see that lnk shortcuts at C:/users/xxxx have not been deleted.
I keep my files at C:/mystuff not C:/users/xxxx
I wonder if my odd location for files somehow caused this?
thanks for reading

Since installing IE7, I've found that some of the icons of my Internet Shortcuts are getting changed on the fly.Not only is it annoying that Microsoft allows websites to change things that I have specifically set-up (i.e. the icons), but I have the problem that, on the Quick Launch for example, several shortcuts now have the same icon ('cos they point to different parts of the same website). It's no good just changing them back to what I had before as the next time I visit the site they just get overwritten again. Is there a setting somewhere that I can use to prevent my choice of icon being overriddden?

I need your help. I was "playing" with icons, icon packages and so on...but after doing I don't know what I noticed that my desktop icons and other folder (mainly applications) icons changed their look. Now they have some addition - something like a small white CD disc in front of small white package. I think that this little white "package" is changed shortcut sign (before there was a black arrow in white box). I would like to restore previous look of shortcuts... but I have no idea how... I appreciate your time and help I also attached a picture of some of my desktop icons it this can help... Many thanks!!

Answer:Help please! Shortcut icons problem...

Welcome

If it is just short cuts, try with one first, to see what happens; delete it and create a new short cut.

better yet, create a new short cut first and see what happens. Then you can delete the replaced one.

Hi all.
I have a really frustrating situation. I want to get rid of that overlay on my app shortcuts on desktop, but can't do it.
I tried all methods - deleting icon cache file, lowering UAC, replacing icon with another etc...but no avail.

I don't want to lower UAC settings as its for security.

Thing is, I'm logged on as administrator, but just a few app shortcuts have this overlay shield (Lotro for example).
I thought it's use is for non-admins to run certain apps easier, but why is it showing overlay if I'm admin?

It' not just that icons become really ugly, it's also I need to confirm I want to run that program. Isn't it unneccessary if I'm admin?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Shortcut icons keep changing

1. Try right click at the desktop > click Refresh.

2. Go to your Resolution window, change it to a different resolution and then back.
Settings > System > Display > right side, click Advanced Display Settings > change the resolution and then back to Recommended setting.

I have had some problems with the computer recently but it now seems to be working OK. However, I have lost all the shortcut icons from the blue strip at the bottom of the screen. I cannot make a short cut on the desktop and transfer it to the blue strip. When I open programmes their icons appear there OK.Another problem is that System Restore has ceased to function. I had this happen before and have the way of restoring it but this might provide a clue for someone looking at this posting. Is there a way of (a)getting the shortcut area back and (b)retrieving the shortcuts themselves.I am running Win XP with SP3.

Hey guys! I am sure this is a simple fix, that you guys can help me with.
In Office 97 on Win98 se, the Office Shortcut Bar icons have all changed to what looks like a sheet of paper. If you roll the mouse over them, it will display what each icon is. I have closed the bar and re-opened it, removed all the buttons then readded and it is still the same. I imagine that I can uninstall and reinstall, or even repair the current installation, but before I do that is there a quicker solution to getting the correct icons back.

Thanks a lot guys,

J

I just finished downloading the new update today and was playing a few games of Warcraft 3. But after I closed that I realized that a majority of the shortcuts on my desktop have reverted to basic icons. I thought it might be the new update so I used the sticky and was about to make the changes to my registry but I checked and the Verclsid.exe program that the windows help tells you to do here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165? is missing. So I haven't done that yet because I didn't want to screw up my registry in case the d word value screws something up if the file isn't there. As I used my computer, a few of the icons reverted back to the correct image but some are still the same. I know it seems like a minor problem but I'm afraid it could be the tip of the ice burg to a larger problem. And it is still fairly aggravating. I would appreciate any help at all.

I run Windows XP Home SE. I left my computer for a while yesterday and when I returned all of my shortcut icons on my desktop were on the left side of my screen and there was a vertical panel on the left side with icons for the control panel and lots of other things. I can't get rid of the panel and when I try to line up my icons by dragging and dropping them, they will not stay in place. They just go back to the other side of the screen. It seems to me that I had this problem once with Windows 98, but I can't remember how I fixed it. Could someone help me get my desktop back in order. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Shortcut icons on desktop

Right click on a blank area of the desktop and mouse over to 'Arrange Icons By >' and a menu will come up. Make sure there is no check mark next to 'Auto Arrange' by clicking on it. I prefer to enable 'Align To Grid' to keep the icons lined up neatly, but I can still put them where-ever I want. As to the vertical panel thing with icons for the control panel and such... I know what you're talking about, but I can't remember how to get rid of it. I'd have to be physically sitting at the PC and I'd just start trying to drag it here or there, right click on it and see what options come up, and just mess around with it. Yeah, not great advice, but without actually using the PC, I'm not sure exactly how to remove it.
