HDD with 7200 rpm or HDD + SSD 8 GB CACHE 5400 RPM

Question: HDD with 7200 rpm or HDD + SSD 8 GB CACHE 5400 RPM

Hey! I'm looking at two specs here, one with normal HDD with 7200 rpm and one HDD with SSD cache of 8 GB with 5400 rpm. WHich is better??

Preferred Solution: HDD with 7200 rpm or HDD + SSD 8 GB CACHE 5400 RPM

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: HDD with 7200 rpm or HDD + SSD 8 GB CACHE 5400 RPM

I would prefer SSD. SSD is more durable, faster, lighter, and quieter.
SSD use less power at peak load than hard drives, less than 2W vs. 6W for an HDD.
But of course, SSD is more expensive as you know.
So if money is not too tight, you can get a SSD.

O.K. So I know this may not be such a difficult question but any help would be appreciated. I have a Gateway P6831 that comes with a ?WD 250GB 5400RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5-Gb/s HDD. I want to purchase a 2nd HDD so I could have a dedicated location for the Paging Files of this Vista System. The HDD I?m looking at is a Seagate 250GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3-Gb/s - "ST9250421AS". (SATA 3GB/s should be backward compatible right?)

So, 1 ? if I am planning on locating the Paging files onto a 2nd HDD, which drive should I put it on? I believe once hearing the paging file would go best on the faster drive (7200RPM). But for some reason I can?t help to think maybe it would be best to use the newer and faster drive (with a 16MB Cache) for the OS.

And 2 - would there be any kind of conflicts or sluggish behavior due to the differences of these two HDD?s, specially since I am planning on locating the paging files / virtual memory to the 2nd drive?
Are there any opinions or answers?

Answer:5400 8MB cach with 7200 16MB cache?

A 7200rpm drive might work, but some laptops equipped with 5400rpm drives won't recognize a 7200rpm drive. In Vista, locating the page file on other than the C drive won't give you any increase in performance. Going from a 5400 to a 7200 will

Question: 5400 vs 7200 RPM

I've got some drives that I'm working on what the best way to utilize them would be:
320 GB 5400 RPM (5)
250 GB 7200 RPM (4)
I plan on using two of the 250s as OSs for two computers. I thought about how I could best utilize the other two and it got me thinking about my laptop. It has an 80 GB drive that I can quickly loose space on if I'm not careful (no, I can't just go out and buy a new one because money is tight). So, I thought about whether or not I could utilize the USB ports to use the drive as an external. My question is is there any benefit to running a 7200 RPM drive over a USB 2 port compared with, let's say, one of the 5400s?

Answer:5400 vs 7200 RPM

Not really.

USB 2.0 seek/read/write will be a bottleneck before disk RPM factors.

I´m about to buy a new notebook, and I´m trying to get a quiet fast system for 3D drawing. How much difference could I expect with a 7200 rpm instead of 5400? I´m talking about speed and reduce battery life. Is it worth the extra money and/or less capacity?
Btw any experiences on the Intel Turbo Memory? Thanks

Answer:5400 or 7200 rpm on new Notebook?

If it were me I'd get the 7200 rpm HDD. The speed is substantial, and the extra noise is minimal.

I have a question. I know a 7200 RPM SATA hard drive is supposedly faster than a 5400 RPM SATA hard drive. And an I5-430 is faster than a I3-330m.

But is an I5-430 with 5400 RPM hard drive worth $100 more than an I3-330 with a 7200 RPM? Or in other words, is the performance improvement of the I5 to the I3 negated if the Hard drive speed is slower? Just curious.

Answer:Difference between an I3 7200 RPM and I5 5400 RPM

Good question - unfortunately it's hard to say - yes the 5400rpm drive will slow you down a little with th i5 430, but personally I'd paid the extra $100 for a superior chip.

Besides, a laptop/netbook HDD is far easier to replace than a CPU.

Hi all,I just upgraded my T60 RAM to 3GB and working fine.Current HDD on my system is 80GB, 5200 RPM. When googled, I noticed that not recommended to upgrade to 7200 RPM,  because it will generate more heat, vibration and battery drains faster. Is this True? What's your opinions? Thanks in Advance

Answer:Which one to choose for T60? HDD 5400 or 7200 RPM?

A good quality 7200rpm drive such as Hitachi or Seagate will work vibration-free, and will not decrease battery life by any meaningful margin. I also had experiences where 5400rpm drives ran hotter than their 7200rpm counterparts. There's absolutely no reason not to upgrade to a 7200rpm drive in my not-so-modest opinion. Hope this helps.

HP Pavillion 7915 computer 1.1 MGZ with 256 ram. The Hard Drive died, it was a Maxor 40GB with 5400 rpm speed. Sent for the XP operating disks for the 7915 from Hewlett Packard. ( dont come with the computer, had to pay $25 for them) Bought a seagate 80GB, 7200 rpm Hard drive to load the xp operating system. Loaded all seven (7) disks to creater XP. Only problem was on disk 3 I got error messages of:
C:\preload\base_G.inp not found
C:\preload\base_H.inp not found
C:\preload\base_I.inp not found
After loading all seven disks the computer says that XP didnt load properly and to start over.. I have done this 3 times. BIOS recognises the new Hard Drive.
Hewlett Packard support says the reason it wont load is because the new hard drive is TOO fast at 7200 RPMs....They wont give me a work around, other than to say buy a 5400 speed hard drive... I told them nobody makes them anymore.... HELP,,,can anyone give me a workaround to get this up and running? It is my kids computer..

Okay, my PC has a factory fitted Seagate ST360012A 60GB hard drive. According to the Seagate website this drive is in the 5400 RPM class, as are all the drives in this series (also known as the U7 series).A few days ago I ran a program called Aida32. It provided detailed information on the components which make up my PC. According to it, my hard drive is a 7200 RPM drive! All the other data looks to be correct.I e-mailed Seagate to tell me the true figure, and here is the reply:-"The official answer is 5400 for all U series drives. They may have used a motor from the later model drives when making your drive. Your software is probably correct."Has anyone ever come across a case of this happening before? It sounds a bit fishy to me!

Have a Lenovo G555 laptop that runs HD at 5400 rpm & bought a larger HD that runs at 7200 rpm. Installed & only 103 of 500 gb shows. Can I get more gigs out of it & if not, will running it damage my computer?

Appreciate some help, Mike

Answer:running 7200 rpm HD on 5400 rpm system

The system doesn't have anything to do with the RPM's of the HDD. A 7200 RPM drive should work fine in your system.

What size was the old drive? According to Lenovo, the G555 will handle up to a 500gig HDD.

Did you buy the HDD New or Used?

If you go to the Disk Manager, check to see if the whole HDD is partitioned. There is probably some unpartitioned space on the drive.

Hey guys,

The WD 320Gb HD in my Dell XPS1330 just died again - ten days after the warranty expired (it's the gremlins, I swear ) - so I am looking around for another one. I've used plenty of 5400 and slower drives in my laptops and PS3 and whatnot, but I've never installed a 7200rpm one, and now I'm tempted. So, what are your experiences with, for example, the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 series? Are they too noisy, temps?

Answer:2.5" SATA in a laptop: 5400 vs 7200 rpm.

I can't say that I've ever noticed any difference in noise, temps, etc. but there is a noticeable improvement in performance (boot and load times). I suppose in some laptops the differences might be more noticeable but I really don't see any reason to stay at 5400rpm.

I cloned my OEM drive via the eSATA port to the WD7500BPKT Scorpion Black which was overall winner in a collection on Tomshardware faceoff of HD's . I used Trueimage and did it manually setting the target partition sizes myself. All went well. I compared results on CrystalDiskMark and getting higher readings except for the 4K latter two tests. Odd but each run is different results as well as running on a different partitioin on the drive is different as well. I know these are fast drives but the variation in the benchmark give me no confidence it the tests.

I'm looking at two external hard drives:

WD My Passport Ultra, 1TB, 5,400 rpm, 4.33 x 3.21 x 0.62

G-Tech G-Drive slim, 500GB, 7,200 rpm, 5.08 x 3.23 x 0.39

I understand that transfer rate is a function not merely of rotational speed, but of platter density as well, which is affected by platter size as well as capacity. I'd ordinarily assume the platters were the same size in devices in this category, but as the G-Tech is significantly slimmer than the WD, I don't know if this also affects platter density, or if it simply means the housing has less shock-absorbing capability.

Given the differences in specs, will the G-Drive be significantly faster than the WD? I'd be using it for backup and occasional transportation of files. (Also, opinions concerning build quality, reliability of brand, quality of tech support, etc. would be appreciated. I have no experience with G-Tech).

I should also mention that I use a MacBook Pro, but I also run Windows 8.1 in Parallels Desktop, and they share a file system, so I don't really care if I backup from The Windows side or the OS X side.

Thank you.

How much noticeable difference to notebook speed will a 7200rpm drive make over a 5200rpm - on a Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz 4MB L2 cache 667MHz FSB, 2Gb RAM set up. Is it worth the extra £50 upgrade?Andy

Answer:hard drive speed... 5400 vs 7200 rpm?

A massive increase. I have a 7200 RPM drive in my portable hard drive and it takes a lot less time to add files to it than my laptops 5200. 5200 is good but avoid anything less as it gets to be silly in terms of transfer times. However one thing I know is that 7200 drives eat more battery than 5200 for obvious reasons so consider how you plan to use the drive. Depending on the size of the drive the £50 sounds a bit on the expensive side.

I'm thinking of picking up another hard to be used as a storage drive. I'm just curious whether I should get a 5400 RPM or a 7200 RPM?

Most of the files I'm dealing with are roughly 1 GB each or if I plan on making 1080p gaming videos with Fraps I think they are split into 4 GB per file. I would like to stick with Western Digital since I've had some issues with Seagate in recent years.

Answer:5400 or 7200 RPM for storing large files?

With prices being extremely low on hard drives there's really no reason not to get a 7200 RPM drive. In short I would go for the faster drives.

Good luck

I'm in the process of buying a laptop for college and was wondering if there would be a noticeable difference between a 5400rpm hard drive and a 7200rpm hard drive. The laptop would be mainly for causal internet use and taking notes and that kind of stuff, but I also want to be able to play video games and do some video editing (nothing hardcore, just Windows Movie Maker). While, I don't play a lot of games, I want the ones I do play to be able to be played well (The Orange Box, Portal 2, that sort of stuff). I'm getting a dedicated graphics card in the machine (Radeon 6470 1GB) no matter what, and 6GBof DDR3 ram. With all that in mind, would there be a huge difference between the two drives? It's only $10 for the 7200 drive, but battery life is important to me and I don't want to spend the extra $30 for a bigger battery just so I can game. Thanks in advance.

I am going to purchase a laptop to go into my sophomore year of college, which I would like to last 3 years/until the under of undergrad hopefully. I am probably going to get the Dell XPS M1530, and I would say with relatively good specifications. I think the bare bones minimum specification price for it is $999, and I can get one that is worth around $2150 for $1300 by purchasing it through the Dell store at my school. The difference in price comes mainly from 2.4 Ghz processor vs 2.0 GHz, High Res Glossy LED LCD vs Glossy LCD, Intel Wireless N card vs Dell G Card, Adobe Photoshop/Premier Elements vs Nothing, 3 yr Warranty/Accident vs 2 yr Warranty/Accident, Wireless 355 Bluetooth vs None. In terms of upgrade from that I'll probably spend the extra $39 for 36 months McAfee rather than 15 months. Overall I'll be using it for regular standard things like websurfing, online gaming, homework/papers/stuff using Microsoft Office (mainly word and excel, and perhaps some powerpoint), and in terms of fun stuff, I'd prefer higher quality for watching movies/tv shows/music. The only major things I could think of upgrading that is at the minimum from dell are the Hard Drive and the Sound Card.

The one that it comes with is SATA 250 GB 5400 rpm. I can upgrade it to the same size but 7200 rpm and for $200 (and then also 320 GB 7200 rpm for $250). Is it generally worth it? From what I read, 7200 is standard in desktop while 5400 is standard in laptop. I am planning on using... Read more

What kind of online gamng?

Its kind of good to get a $2100 notebook for $1300... but theres other factors... 2.4Ghz CPU notebooks go for about $1000+ anyways. For a ThinkPad - its like $40 upgrade.

Dell loves to rip-you-off as you upgrade your parts.

THinkpad now has an econo line of pre-built notebooks: $1350 = 2.4Ghz / 340GB HD / 2GB / GeForce 9300

Lenovo charges about $100 for 200GB upgrade from 5400 > 7200 RPM. But the real-world differences isn't much... the ones we purchased were 120GB versions where the upgrade to 7200 was like $35.

Do you need 3D gaming card ability?

Something to think about... 3 years is a LONG LONG time for a notebook. I've now sold and configured about 5 ThinkPads and all my clients love them. But after looking at the SL series - those are pre-built/non-customized version of "ThinkPAD" - that actually seems like a business version of the IdeaPAD. I don't see any true ThinkPAD features such as:
1 - Roll Cage (protects the notebook against falls)
2 - Spill-protection keyboard. There are drainage holes in real thinkpads.
3 - Matte LCD screen! None of that horrible "glass" glossy junk on ALL other notebooks.
4 - keyboard light (does help)
5 - User customize - WinXP, CPU, HD, RAM, Wireless...

Also is there any reason why the 7200RPM may be less reliable than the 5400?

A 7200rpm drive will give faster read & write speeds and should be as reliable as the slower 5400rpm drive. I would definitely go for the faster drive, you will notice the difference.

It has kept up witht straight SSD's I already have - just about of course the top end stuff it won't but an ordinary spinner - no contest

I don't know what they cost in the US but I got a 1TB for $129 out here .

One point I did track down defragging with these drives and it is a no no.

I just bought a Dell Latitude D820. I opted for the 100 GB hard drive at 7400 rpm versus the 120 GB drive at 5400 rpm. When I received the Dell, I noticed that I could hear the drive spinning. It wasn't constant, and it didn't sound strained like a sick hard drive, but it would randomly become audible now and again. It isn't the fan as I know the difference between what a fan sounds like and what a hard drive sounds like. I called Dell Gold Technical Support, we ran diagnostics and everything came out fine. A manager got on the line and informed me that the faster drive would always be a little louder. To be safe, I asked fo ra new laptop - and when it got to me, it made the very same sounds. Does Dell simply make a loud laptop or is a 7400 rpm drive going to be a little louder?

Here are the specs of the machine:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7400, 2.16GHz, 667Mhz 4M L2 Cache
2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMM
256MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M TurboCache
100GB Hard Drive 9.5MM 7200RPM

Answer:Would a 7200 rpm hard drive be louder than a 5400 rpm hard drive?

(I posted this in the "anyone explain raid" special thread and it looks like it would get much attention so I've decided to post here, sorry if this is illegal )

I currently have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA 1.5Gb/s 160GB HDD. I'm thinking about getting another drive and setting up a RAID 0. My question is, do I have to get another 7200.7 or will a 7200.9 (at 3.0Gb/s, everything else is the same I believe) work too?
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 + 7200.9 RAID 0?

You can use different drives for RAID. The performance will be limited by the worst device of course.

ok, well what would be the better setup?

-1 74 gb raptor 10k rpm + 160gb seagate 7200 sata
-2x 160 gb seagate sata in raid 0

Thanks, and explain y it would be better

Answer:1 rator+ 1 7200 sata or 2 7200 in raid0?

i'd go with d first option. coz if u combine 2 for use in sata raid 0, n if 1 fails, d other 1 is gone. with the first option, u can use the raptor for important things such as system files and games. in that way, ur games and d OS will load much faster. u can use the other 160GB drive for other things that does not require higher speeds.

Hello.I have Y580 model with W8 preinstalled and 16gb msata cache drive.I've replaced the 16gb drive with 60gb, created one partition to install windows 7 on and left unused 16gb for express cache. In bios I switched from UEFI to legacy, but left UEFI as primary boot so I need press F12 to boot into Windows 7.Because msata drive was replaced express cache stopped working, so I reinstalled it and let it create needed partition on unallocated 16gb after few reboots into Windows 8 it filled up that partition which I check with command in cmd:eccmd -info Windows 8 became very responsive and snappy as it was before until I boot into Windows 7. once booted to Windows 7, booting to Windows 8 takes VERY long time and checking eccmd -info shows that cache is empty. Rebooting several times restores the cache. This happens every times I boot into Windows 7. The express cache installed only on Windows 8 (Windows 7 installed directly on msata) so it can't be some kind of conflict. Any ideas what causing it and how to fix it? Thank you.

Answer:Y580: Dual boot + express cache = express cache clears cache after booting into second OS

ExpressCache does not support dual boot configuration and this per design. The cache will get reset if the volume / drive has mounted from another OS or system other than the primary ExpressCache installation. Rick Willis

I used to be able to locate bits of files that were "temp" or not saved because they were written on a site (Like this question for example) or because the program/page failed in some way and lost my text... by searching for "~" tilda
or #, that doesn't work on Edge...
I can't find the Edge temp user cache, and the search function doesn't seem to search for text in a file only names of files, despite having search full text selected.

What can I do to locate something I lost due to site crash?\

So I’ve been experimenting for a week now to determine why I keep getting inconsistent CPU load values and task completion times while video encoding using Nero 7.

I decided to install Vista Ultimate 64 on two different HDD's. One was a Seagate 1Tb 32 Mb Cache and the other was a WD Caviar Green 500Gb with 16Mb Cache.

Running Nero 7 on the WD Hard Drive, converting a 700Mb Avi to DVD took 12 minutes, average CPU load was around 60%

On the Seagate, the exact same task took over 40 minutes. Average CPU load was approx 45%.

Keep in mind that I purchased a 32Mb cache HD specifically for this experiment. Additionally, the store had no WD so I was forced to settle with Seagate.

Odd, the store was totally sold out of all 32Mb Cache Western Digital HHD's but had an overstock of Seagate.

I’ve always avoid Seagate now because I have about four 500Gb Sata HDD’s collecting dust because they either stopped working or generate a metal on metal grinding sound.
So can anyone explain why the Seagate performed so poorly? Is it the larger capacity, cache or are they just bad?

Alright, I just received a Samsung 1TB 32mb cache 7200rpm HDD today and I decided to Benchmark it against my Western Digital 150GB VelociRaptor 16mb cache 10,000rpm HDD.

The VelociRaptor came out on top for smaller transfers (.5kb - 8kb) whereas the Samsung came out on top for all transfers above 8kb (16kb - 8912kb). They are both SATA drives. I guess when you think about it, this outcome makes partial sense, the 16mb cache being the VelociRaptors bottleneck and the 7200rpm being the Samsungs. So I guess its similar to the Bugatti Veyron vs the McLarens F1. McLarens F1 will thrash it off the mark because of its superior acceleration, but once the Veyrons raw power starts to kick in it overtakes the F1 with ease ...

If anyone wants to add any extra information or extra experiences, or a HDD which incorporates both 10,000rpm AND a 32mb cache would be GREAT!

Please vote upon which has worked best for you, if you have used either type of drive, otherwise please tick N/A,

Comments welcome!

Also here are the actual BenchMark graphs for your perusal.

Answer:32mb Cache w/ 7200rpm OR 16mb Cache w/ 10000rpm

I have actually voted for the 7200rpm 32mb Cache, only because they have a larger capacity.

Question: ProCurve 5400

Hi all -

I'm hoping someone is familiar with this and can shed some light for me. Just got a ProCurve 5406zl put on my desk and am currently trying to configure it. I threw a 20 port + 4 mGBIC module in it (j8705A) and am trying to configure that n particular. However, when I am trying to configure one of the mGBIC ports it will not allow me - it will say Invalid Input as if the port (B24) does not even exist. However, if I try anything else on the module (besides the 3 other mGBICs) - B1-B20 - those are recognized fine. I'm more of a Cisco guy - so, am I missing something really easy?

Answer:ProCurve 5400

I'm a bit configured. It sounds like you're trying to configure a certain port on that card. Am I wrong? Are you trying to change the duplex settings of that GBIC card? I believe they only operate at 1000base. Are you trying to make that port part of a certain VLAN?

I have the 5406, so I'd be more than willing to help.

2 questions if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated,
1: before I knew the battery pack was bad I plugged my 5400 into the work station after a couple of hours the computer started messing up badly when I put my hand near the battery area it was extremey warm, the question is since the hard drive is right next to the battery could this have fried the hard drive.
2: the computer setup message says there is no hard drive when it is in the slot, how do I make the computer recognise the hard drive or will it if its toast

Answer:Compaq LTE 5400

I think its fried. Drives are pretty good with heat but being that it is a laptop and the battery is close to a very compact, lightweight drive it could be fried. You could get a cable that would allow you to connect it to a desktop computer to see if data can be recovered.

I've been having problems with this CPU for ~2 years now.
It happens like this.

I bought a new PC. It was pretty good at that time. I was playing Crysis one day and the PC immediately shut down.
Turns out the CPU seems to be overheating. I use Core Temp to see the temperature. (I've tried many other programs, but they're the same.)

When I play games or do rendering and whatnot, the temperatures start to rise. When at ~100°C, the PC would turn off.

I've reapplied the thermal paste multiple times. 90% of the time it just overheats. Altough there are some times when for periods of time i.e. ~2weeks - few months it just works.

My PC case - COMPUCASE MIDI BLACK ATX, but I've opened one side.

I have the stock CPU cooler. I guess that should be ok for normal everyday operations and games.
The voltage seems to be normal - 1.3000V and I haven't tried over-clocking or anything.
Any help? Could this be a faulty temp sensor or what?

Have a Dimage Elite 5400 scanner.

XP Home SP3

Have admin rights - uninstalled virus/firewall software.

Installed the latest software from the Konica site. Software installs fine.

Plugged in scanner to USB port. XP finds and identifies it. Check "automatically install."

As XP is installing the driver usbscan to the the c:\windows\system32\drivers subdirectory - it errors out with

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
Konica no longer supports this discontinued scanner and sold the line to Sony. I was going to call Sony next week in case they had some ideas.

Tried letting Windows update driver and same issue.

I'm assuming the registry needs to be changed but not sure what key.

hi, Been checking on getting another laptop HDD, the one in there now is 60b, so i thought while i am at it I will go for 80gb..just on the point of ordering, when I realized that a short while ago i ordered a mini external drive and that is 80gb, so i have just prised the case off, and it looks like a normal laptop drive, now i am toying with the idea of nailing that into the laptop, but, it has a speed of 4200rpm, for general use would i really notice the difference between that and one running at 5400..thanks

Well, it's an older game so I might look into running some different video settings. It shouldn't really matter what the affinity is set to... I guess the question I have is pretty simple but if someone could go into detail about it I would greatly appreciate it.

When it comes to hard drives, other than the obvious cache size what is the difference between a HD with 16MB cache and one with 32MB cache, and will I be able to notice the difference during gaming or high load situations?

I am building a new machine so any info would be awesome.

Answer:16MB Cache and 32MB Cache??

as you probably know the bigger the cache the more data the HD can have ready for processing , there was a general feeling after tests i saw last year that anything over 8MB made very little differance in terms of hard drive performance

and as for gaming you certainly wont see any differance in performance unless you have a low end rig and very little memory and i dont suppose your gonna be building yourself one of those

that said my knowlage only really stretches to gaming as for other apps , video editing etc im thinking a larger cache may be an advantage , if its not too much more go for the 32 , if your building a glorified X Box get either

My Lexmark 5400 printer keeps jamming. It feeds the paper so that it is halfway into the printer and then proceeds as if it is printing the page, but the paper is not feeding into the printer as each line is printed. When it is done "printing" the page, it posts the jam and asks me to clear it and then hit the check mark. It then cancels the job and deletes it from the print queue. Occasionally a page or two does print successfully, but most of the time it jams after it is initially drawn into the printer as described above. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer:Upgrade CPU AMD 5400+ to 6400+ Question

Welcome to MajorGeeks. I'm no Vista expert, but I'm thinking it's just the fact that Vista doesn't have the 'spec sheet' for that particular CPU. It won't effect performance, so it's like you said, it isn't a big deal. There may be an update from Microsoft that will address the issue so check there and check the optional hardware updates also. Have you installed the AMD drivers? Like for Cool-N-Quiet? There's also an AMD CPU optimizer and stability driver but I'm not 100% sure if it's for Vista or all AMD chips. I have it installed on my PC (I downloaded it from my motherboard maker) and it hasn't improved stability or performance (I had no performance or stability issues to start with) but it has lowered the CPU temp by an average of 10c...

I'm looking for some RAM for a friend. I looked up her computer on Crucial and it said that each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 2GB per slot. I came across what looks like a a good deal from Tiger Direct on 2gb(2x1gb) OCZ System Elite Dual Channel PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory. But I'm kinda confused. Crucial said her computer will take pc5300 or pc6400, so would this pc5400 RAM be compatible? It seems like it would, but I really don't understand the technical details enough to be sure.

On a side note, I was wondering about dual-channel RAM. That OCZ RAM is labeled as dual channel, how is that different than regular memory? I thought any matching pair of RAM would work as dual channel, but are there some made specifically for that, which are different somehow?:confused

Answer:Memory query, pc-5300&5400

As far as I know the pc5400 is eactly the same as pc5300. The on;y thing the number difference means is that the manufacturer successfully tested that memory module at a higher speed.

About the dual channel i'm not too familiar.

Does anyone have some good numbers to report with a SATA3 connection with a normal 3.5" 7200RPM hard drive? How about USB3 with a 5400RPM 2.5" USB3 enabled external hard drive connected via USB3?

I am wondering how much difference one will be able to get with SATA3 and USB3 not using SATA3 or USB3 enabled SSDs.

If you know of any good articles please let me know. I don't think it would be worth connecting a "normal 7200RPM or 5400 RPM drive to USB3 or SATA3. I think the HD would be a bottleneck. I am planning to do some testing now that I have a SATA3 / USB3 motherboard, but it's going to be expensive to get SSDs to test with. All my SSDs are being used for boot drives. I am planning to geta 5400RPM 2.5" external USB3 enabled drive to test the USB3 but I would love to know what you know about this.

The board I have for testing is a Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3 - GA-880GMA-UD2H (rev. 2.1)

So the SATA3 is provided by the AMD SB850 southbridge and the USB3 is via the NEC D720200F1 controller on the board. (There is also an eSATA port on the back that is SATA3 enabled via the southbridge)

Thanks for any info. Lots of smart people here!

Answer:USB 3.0 SATA 3 and 5400 or 7200RPM drives

You are correct, USB 3 and Sata III are backwards compatible there is no advantage hanging a USB 2.0 or Sata II drive off them and expecting more speed. But stay tuned as the flood gates are opening on Sata III drives and USB 3 drives so wait if you can or pick up the old styles for cheap and live with it!

I'm using a 1 year old Dell Dimension 9150 also known as an XPS 400. Since I'm going to make the leap to Windows Vista Ultimate (Clean install) I knew I had to jump to 2GB SDRAM DDR2 from a 1GB SDRAM DDR2.

I'm going to make my purchase in about 3 days time and I need help.

Dell told me my PC can support up to PC-5300 677mhz. I'm currently using a 2x512GB PC2-4300 533mhz. Ok the problem here is that I've rarely seen PC-5300 ram and its PC-5400 that is the most common. Dang, even some shops label PC-5300 and 5400 together as in PC-5300/5400. What is exactly the difference?

I did ask Dell if my computer supports 5400 and I got a firm No.

So the question is:

Should I strictly stick to 5300 even though the margin between 5300 and 5400 is nearly invisible?

What other things should I look out for when purchasing RAM?

One last thing, I want to enjoy dual channel, must I have all 4 slots stuck with the same kind of ram (1gb sticks each) of the same brand and model to enjoy it? Would having 2x1GB and another set of 2x512 work?

Do I have to buy 2 sticks in a kit? or can buying 1 stick each same brand and model work for dual channel?

Thanks in advance for viewing this post and giving me your much valued feedback.

I'm building a new computer from scratch for a customer. The computer is.

Biostar M7VIG MB with built in Audio and Video
AMD XP1800+ Retail
128 MB P2100 crucial RAM
Liteon CD-ROM
300Watt PS

Western Digital OEM 5400rpm 40gig HD

No matter what I do I can't get it to boot. I bought two identical HDs and both do the same thing. I've tried intalling both win98 and winXP Pro(the OS i was planning to use) I built another computer with identical parts except for a 20gig Seagate 7200rpm which had no problems. I also tried hooking the WD up to my computer and it wont boot on there either. I've tried different cables which doesn't seem to make a difference. I can partiton, format, and copy the startup files to the disk then after reboot it with XP it just goes back into the setup deal. I've double checked my BIOS setting and they are fine so thats not the problem. I would appreciate any help you can give me and thank you in advance.

I have a problem in that the Epson Stylus Cx5400 printer added to my new PC with windows 7 did not display the smart panel. I have managed to get this from the original disc but when I try to scan from the smart panel, it keeps asking for me to download the supported TWAIN driver. Where is this and where can I get it. The disc doesn't seem to have it as I have re-loaded it fully. Any help please

Answer:Epson CX 5400 Twain Driver

hi, the drivers on the cd are probably extremely old and not supported at all on windows 7.
Edit- Ok found your specific drivers and it looks like you are in luck. Grab what you need from here and it should work.

For your specific scanner issue you want the third file; Twain Drivers and Epson Scan Ultility v3.04A

I want to buy a new external HDD to use as network storage via my Netgear DGND3300 router.

The connection to router is USB 2.0. should I buy a 7200 rpm HDD or is 5400 rpm fast enough to saturate USB 2.0 and the network (it is 100 Mbit)? I know 3.3" HDD are faster at given rpm. But again, does it matter when connected to USB 2.0?
would the USB port powerful enough to power a 2.5" HDD? Ideally I would not have another powersupply and cable. But if 7200 rpm/ 3.5" is recommended, I gladly get one with external PS.

(I don't want to go through the effort of buying a network storage, from all I read the cheap ones are not fast, HDD cooling is a problem etc. I also don't want to spend much money, and an external HDD can be useful otherwise as well. It is jsut to give my wife access to her data whne she uses the laptop and the desktop is off. I'll back up to the desktop frequently. I know those external HDDs are not made for running all day, but I turn my router off whne I'm not at home. the external HDd would give me what I need for $ 100 or so)

Answer:external HDD: 5400 rpm / 2.5" fast enough for USB 2.0?

Yes a 5400 rpm hdd will keep up to USB 2.0, no problems.

Hello Guys! I'm concerned about a question i was recently asked and couldn't find an answer, so here it is:

An HP Laptop needs to be upgraded from 512MB Ram to 2x1GB RAM, but the Laptop specs say it will only take PC2-5300 and the Laptop owner just purchased a PC2-5400 from OCZ and he is concerned about if it will be compatible or not with his Laptop. this one:**.node2?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

I did some research but I was unable to find out any useful information, could you help us understand where is the difference between this spec and if it will be compatible or not, I'm confused, pins are the same (200) speed the same (667Mhz) CL 5-5-5-15.

HP tech support were trying to sell their owns for 99 buck a GB saying its only 5300 compatible.

All input highly appreciate it, Thanks!

Answer:Notebook memory 5300 vs 5400

I don't believe there is such a thing as PC5400 ram, it was probably a typo on the site's behalf & he purchased PC5300 ram. If his laptop supports SO-DIMM modules (which is most likely), he won't have any problems with the ram he purchased.

I guess he'll know for sure when he tries it.

How do you think which is better for notebook in 80 GB 5400 rpm: Hitachi or Toshiba?

Never ever ever ever under any circumstance buy a Hitachi hard drive. Travelstar, especially.

So to answer your question, spring for Toshiba.

First, my apologies for trampling on another individual's drive test instructions.
I installed the GSmartControl package as instructed and ran the short self test which produced no errors/logs, and then ran the extended self test.  That test said it would take 2 hours to complete, but it was finished in a few minutes after 10%, with a "completed with read failure" result.  The error logs still say there is nothing wrong with it.
As a comparison I ran the same test on the Toshiba I'm typing from, which is older and has original hard drive and there are no errors on either the short or extended test.  So does the GSmart test mean indeed the Seagate in the HP is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Momentus 5400.6 imminent failure?

Hi NotAnEngineer If the GSmartControl test cannot complete, then there might be an issue with the drive and it could indeed by failing. You could always check the SMART attributes with Speccy (not that precise) or CrystalDiskInfo (the portable version without any ads).

I've been trying to test my CPU's limits and have reached 3.15Ghz.
I've seen this chip get up to 3.4Ghz but i wont be able to reach that without upping the vcore a bit...

i used ClockGen to get it up to 3.1 but there's no option in the software to up the vcore.. if anyone knows of a good AMD Overclocking software other than AMD Overdrive ( doesnt support my chipset) please let me know of it...

thank you,

Answer:5400+ Black Edition Overclocking Software

If you've got an NVidia Chipset, then ntune works.
(I assume it's not an ATI chipset as Overdrive doesn't work)

i'm trying to change the voltages on my AMD 5400+ Black Edition from 1.34v to get it past 3.2ghz because at 3.3ghz it'll shut down.

i've tried using ntune, rivatuner, clockgen, and there's no option or menu to change voltages, it only displays what the current voltage is.

in ntune there is a slider to change voltages in the CPU but at the bottom of the slider there is a "N/A" and the slider is shaded and it wont slide.

if there is any other program or something else i can do to change my CPU voltages let me know

Thank You,

Hi guys, so I've been pulling my hair out over this for a while now. I have the ATI Radeon HD 5400 series graphics card and I am trying to connect a 5th monitor to my PC.
Windows 7 detects my 5th monitor via HDMI (other 4 monitors are connected by VGA x2 and DVI x2) but Windows will only allow me to run 4 extended monitors at a time. I want my desktop to extend to 5. Can this be possible on the graphics card I have? Is it simply the settings I need to configure on the ATI Catalyst Control Center? Any solutions would be grateful.
Note: I have also tried a USB to VGA adaptor which didn't work out. Have also tried a USB-UGA display adaptor but the drivers that came with the box are not compatible with my ATI graphics card.

I have a nikon coolpix 5400 and I cant upload pictures onto my computer, which is running windows 7. The computer comes up with an error43 which suggests that it doesnt recognise the camera. I then bought a USB multi-card reader but it says the reader is empty even when there is a card in it. The problem seems to be that the cards, two of them, are compact flash cards,, one of them 64meg and the other is 1GB. Other usb devices work ok. Help!!

Answer:nikon 5400 and card reader not recognised

Judging from the size of those cards, they are rather old and quite possibly have gone bad.Can you try them in a different computer?

Hello Experts I have got a Thinkpad E440 , Model no. 20C5A0L9AD with a very slow 1TB HDD 5400rpms . My question is : " Can I replace this SATA HDD 5400rpms with a SSD disk, just simply remove the michanically rotational one and put in its place a SSD one ????"  By the way , my model of E440 was not packed with SSD or extra room for SSD only the 1TB 5400 HDD .   Please advice .......

Answer:ThinkPad E440 , SSD in replace for slow HDD 5400

Im not familiar with your model specifically.  But I see zero issues if your doing a complete swap. Just swap the drives and boot from disc/usb install windows.  If you don't have another PC to get all your drivers, get those first and put on a usb as well.  If your model has an m2 slot you could also go that route.  Good luck.

Hello everyone, so basically there was a problem with a laptop HDD (it wouldn't boot, or show up in the BIOS menu), so I took it out and tried to connect it to my desk computer using a USB adapter. I was able to locate the disc in windows DISKPART. I tried to format it, but when i typed the clean command my computer just pretty much froze and I had to restart it. Now when i plug in the HDD it only starts spinning, but nothing else happens. Am I missing something ? Any help will be very appreciated, thanks alot in advance

Answer:Seagate Momentus 5400.6 USB adapter not working

It sounds like the hdd has died. My suggestion is to go to manufacturers website and download a hdd test tool. Most of them will have an option to make a bootable cd/USB. Seagate has a good tool. It'll work on non-seagate drives for the most basic of tests.
