Microsoft reportedly finalizing Windows 10 Anniversary Update - RTM build coming next week

Question: Microsoft reportedly finalizing Windows 10 Anniversary Update - RTM build coming next week

Microsoft is reportedly putting the finishing touches on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which is slated to arrive on August 2. The report comes from Windows Central, saying that build 14384 should be the first RTM (release to manufacturing) build.

The company has begun the sign-off process for the build, which means that it will put a variety of builds through internal tests, and then it will pick the best one for a public release.

According to the report, Insiders can expect to see a final build by the end of next week. The timeline isn't surprising. With the Anniversary Update less than a month away, we should certainly be in the polishing phase.

The fate ofWindows phones that are ineligible for the Anniversary Update is still undetermined. Such unsupported devices have had a sort of "upgrade at your own risk" option through the Release Preview ring. These users will be unable to install the Anniversary Update, but it's not clear if build 10586 will remain available for them.

The report also states that the Redstone 2 (Rs2) builds that Microsoft is compiling are in the 148xx range, and should begin shipping to Insiders in mid-to-late August. The Redstone 2 update isn't slatedto arrive for the public until April, 2017.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The patches are numbered KB 3040021 and 3038390 for the general hotfixes, and KB 3021952 for the Internet Explorer security rollup. The details are not available yet at the time of writing this post, but they will be up shortly, so if you want to dive into them, we'll keep an eye out for them and update this post with the links.

While we do not expect any major issues with this download, but do let us know in the comments below if you run into any problems. Based on Gabe Aul's tweets, the updates also include the necessary changes to prepare users for a new build.

2 more hotfixes going out to #WindowsInsiders running 9926 today to prep for next build: https://t.co/0XwB5KN8iJ https://t.co/jP9ACKniuf

UPDATE: More info on the Internet Explorer security fixes here.

UPDATE 2: The new build released to Insiders will be from the fbl_impressive branch, so definitely a 100xx build, as one of the updates changes the registry settings accordingly.

My machine running windows 10 updated the other day to the "anniversary edition". After this, each time the machine boots up, I get a dialog box asking me to associate an app with some weird file type which I have not seen before. The file type is: ".45c30aaf". I cannot locate ANY file on my machine like this. An option on this dialog box asks me if I want to "go out to the app store" to find an appropriate app for this file type. The app store does not know what this is either.

Has this happened to anyone else? Have a fix for this? It would be nice to NOT have this dialog box show up each time I turn my machine on.

Thanks.

Well that was somewhat expected I suppose but it's out now, build 14393.5 was pushed to both Slow and Release preview rings (it was released to Fast ring earlier this week on Monday). It pretty much is the Anniversary Update from all the reports and since it's been pushed now to all the rings that means it's pretty much done - the only thing now is to see it pushed to the Production ring aka general wide release which is expected on Tuesday August 2nd.

If you really can't wait to get it, it's currently available through Release Preview and I'm sure someone will throw together an ISO here in the next 24 hours or less for a clean install.

Now let the horror stories begin.

Answer:Windows 10 build 14393.5 is available and it's the Anniversary Update

There's a "14393.31" bubbling around at MS but nobody is sure if it will be "the" Anniv. build or not. Since the .5 took TWO cumulative updates after 14393.0 to get to, it's possible they could eek out one more .esd before next Tuesday.

At least this time my deployment scripts at work are 100% flawless with 14393. That November update.. oy veh what a mess.

No specifics on the release date were provided though

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9926 a couple of weeks ago with quite a lot of improvements, including a working version of Cortana and a revamped version of the Start menu, but it turns out that the company is already planning a brand new release for this month.

During the January 21 Windows 10 event at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Joe Belfiore said that the software firm wanted to update Windows 10 Technical Preview much more often than before and hinted that a new build would indeed come in February, most likely together with the preview version of Windows 10 for phones.

Now Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has confirmed in a couple of tweets that Microsoft is indeed working to bring a new Windows 10 Technical Preview build to users, but he has explained that no specifics can be provided right now.

Hi,
I have a Packard Bell OneTwo S3221. It came factory installed with W7.

I upgraded to W10 last year after difficulty - upgrading to W10 via Windows update would not work, kept installing to a certain percentage then would reboot to a blank screen and freeze indefinitely, I needed to power off then on restart it would roll back to W7. This happened repeatedly despite trying all sorts - clean boots, uninstalling antivirus and updating drivers, etc.

I finally installed W10 using Media creation tool. Everything ran fine. But when the big update came in Novmember 2015 that failed to, in the same way as above, however all other monthly windows updates install fine.

Windows update never tried to push the Nov 2015 update on me again - I'm still on build 10240 now.

I was prompted to install the anniversary update by Windows update last week but that also failed in the same way as above. Download ok and begins installing fine, then at some point after 50% complete I get the blank screen indefinitely and have to power off, then it reverts back to W10 build 10240.

Having checked Packard Bell website my model is not supported by Packard Bell for W10, and they are not providing any drivers for it. This may explain the problems.

Can anyone suggest how to find out what the problem is and if there is a solution? I've tried looking in Update history for error codes, but there is none, it doesn't even show an attempt to install the anniversary update. Like i said every other ... Read more

Answer:Can't install Windows 10 Anniversary update, stuck on build 10240

Hi, simplest answer is avoid windows update and create the appropriate bootable medium or iso and use it as you did before. That way you can try again without the download.
As you know plenty of people have this sort of problem. Make sure you have at least 450Mb of unallocated space on the drive.

You could try reading the Windows update log...
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/902093

Note that the upgrade can introduce new issues for some (search the net), and some are delaying because of that. Older machines like yours could well exhibit such problems. So before you make this change, I recommend you create a disk image of your existing setup - a procedure you should do routinely anyway- to give another way of restoring your system.
E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for images.

It's best to have a physical bootable medium as it covers all of:
a. if you need to repeat the installation
b. as a bootable medium for recovery options
c. in case you need to do an in-place upgrade repair install

without taking up disk space.

Somehow the Windows 10 Anniversary Update build didn't work out for me on an older machine.
(my GPU was no longer detected)
So I was more than happy to use the windows roll back feature to a previous build.
Still, soon after rolling back, windows started the update once again and I would be ending in an unfortunate endless loop.
(Side note :HappyAndyK wrote somewhere else that the rollback feature to a previous build only works for about 10-30 days,so you might have to reinstall the 1511 build) To stop Windows 10 from trying to update my 1511 edition to the Anniversary build, I finally found a small but effective reg tweak.
Although originally meant for skipping preview builds, it seems to work for the regular builds too.
(So far so good)

Place to post any issues you may have and potential solutions.
I have tried updating a desktop and a Surface Pro 4.... Desktop has updated but I cant install any extensions in Edge, I see it says there was a problem , try reinstalling the extension, did that and still no joy, rebooted, still no luck.
Surface Pro 4 is stuck on spinning gear with a blank black background for last 45 minutes, any advice?
EDIT: Possible fix for no extensions in Edge.....Go to Start>Settings>System & Apps and Features then uninstall the extensions (will be greyed out) and try again through Edge/Store - should work.
Potential fix for no Cortana...This is changinging registry value so take neccesary precautions, backup etc, solution was posted to a response on Microsoft site... I found the answer on another thread. It's a registry setting. Starting RegEdit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search, and change Cortana and Bing permissions from 0 to 1

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
When restarting, my laptop takes 5 minutes (no, that's not a misprint) to bootup. More specifically, that's the time taken from pressing the On button to the time I get to the login screen. I have an SSD drive in the laptop. While I am waiting for this to happen, the drive light is permanently on with no flickering. That's a LOT of drive access / throughput.
From there (logging on), there are no issues. Laptop is fine.
Here's a very weird thing. If I run cmd as Administrator and then run chkdsk /f and then reboot, the laptop (after it does the disk check and reboots again) will start really fast. Like it should. If I then reboot after that, it's back to the five minute thing.
I have tried the following:

Turned EnableULPS off
Tried turning off Virtual Memory or adjusting it to the recommended settings
Turning off Fast Boot
Taken the battery out while machine is off
Updated the drivers from the Device Manager
Unfortunately boot logging c:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt does not show log times and so I cannot see where the delay is.
Nothing in the Event Viewer since the delay happens before that.

Any ideas? The E6540 is supposedly certified for Update 1607.
Many thanks.
Kind Regards
Nick

Next week, Microsoft will begin rolling out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, and it's now putting the finishing touches to the major update before that rollout begins.

After pushing out build 14393.3 a few days ago as a cumulative update to 14393 - the final 'RTM' build (although Microsoft doesn't use that terminology any more) - it's followed up today with another bug-fixing rollup.

Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider Program, announced today that Windows 10 Anniversary Update build 14393.5 is now available for PCs and phones in the Fast ring. According to the announcement on the Windows 10 Feedback Hub, the new update includes the following fixes:

We have improved reliability and performance of Microsoft Edge with AdBlock and LastPass extensions enabled. These extensions should continue to work after installing other extension updates from the Store.
We fixed an issue causing battery to drain due to runaway CPU processes while a device is idle. We also fixed a battery life issue due to the proximity sensor always running on some devices.
We fixed an issue causing Store apps to stop launching due to a licensing issue.
We have fixed an issue that results in Windows Updates being delayed on systems with Connected Standby.

Microsoft has accidentally revealed the release date for its upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update through the Microsoft News Center, before swiftly removing the unfinished press release from view.

According to the post's title, the Anniversary Update will be available on August 2, just a few days after the one-year anniversary of Windows 10's launch. The rest of the announcement was missing, but considering the alleged date was published directly through Microsoft's in-house news service, it's probably pretty accurate.

Considering the Anniversary Update will most likely be available in a little over a month's time, Microsoft will sign off on the final version in the next few weeks. One of the candidates could be the latest Insider Preview release, build 14376, which became available today for PCs and phones packing mostly bug fixes and minor improvements.

The biggest new features coming to the Anniversary Update include a fully-fledged Ubuntu Bash shell for developers; revamped stylus integration; updates to Cortana, including the ability to view notifications from your phone; and support for extensions in Microsoft Edge.

Answer:Anniversary Update coming August 2

After what seems like an eternity of waiting, Microsoft has finally released the Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update. The news comes two weeks after all of the other Windows 10 platforms saw the update, and Dona Sarkar said it would be available in the coming weeks.

The build that you'll be seeing today is 14393.67, which is a cumulative update that was offered to Insiders a week ago. If it's not entirely obvious, you'll need a phone that's officially supported for Windows 10 Mobile to grab today's update.

The Anniversary Update brings quite a few new features to your device. For one thing, Wallet now supports tap-to-pay. Well, to be more specific, it only supports NFC payments if you subscribe to one of seven banks and your phone is a Lumia 650, 950, or 950 XL.

You'll also find a few camera improvements, which is also exclusive to certain devices. Windows Camera will now have a panorama feature, and on the lock screen, you'll notice that the back button turns into a camera button.

Aside from improvements to Cortana and the Action Center, perhaps the most important improvement is the new UWP Skype Preview app. One of its biggest new features is that it won't beshut down in early 2017 like its Windows Phone 8 predecessor. It also supports light and dark themes, which is something that's huge in the Windows world.

Those are just a few of the improvements that you'll see in today's update. You can check out our full re... Read more

Microsoft is investigating freezing issues on PCs after Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Last week, we reported that several users are experiencing freezing issues on their PCs after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. This usually involved a system freeze after logging in, which rendered the device unresponsive. Several of our readers confirmed that they were experiencing the same issue on different devices and configurations as well, but had been unable to discover a universal fix.

Now, Microsoft has acknowledged the issue, stating that the company has received a "small number of reports", and has confirmed that it is currently investigating the reason behind the problem, as it works on a fix.

According to Microsoft Forum Moderator Basith M, the company is aware that users are experiencing freezing issues on PCs after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. However, the moderator mentioned that the problem plagues only those with the operating system installed on solid-state drives (SSDs), with apps and data downloaded on separate drives. Basith also went on to say that if users sign in to Windows 10 in Safe Mode, the issue does not occur.

While Microsoft works on a fix for the problem, Basith has suggested a temporary workaround for users, asking them to start their PCs in Safe Mode, and then to transfer apps and data to the same storage device as the operating system. The moderator has also stated that another alternative is to roll back to the previous ver... Read more

Microsoft Announces Patch for Critical Windows 10 Anniversary Update Bug

Soon after Microsoft rolled out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update on August 2, the firm started getting reports of a potential bug that might impact partitions on computers that upgrade to the new version.

Specifically, users were complaining that after installing the Anniversary Update, some of their partitions were no longer visible in Windows 10, making it impossible to access data that was stored here.

Without a doubt, many thought their data was gone, but Microsoft rushed to acknowledge the bug shortly after that, explaining that it was working on a fix, and no files were lost despite the fact that partitions were no longer visible.

And recently, Microsoft announced that a patch was ready, and it would release it to users as part of the next Windows update patch, without actually providing specifics on when exactly this is scheduled to take place.

?Thanks for everyone?s input and patience. Microsoft is planning to release a fix to address the majority of the misidentified partitions in an upcoming Windows Update,? a company engineer said.

Microsoft has finally fixed the freezing issue in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Last month, we reported that many users were experiencing freezing issues on their PCs after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Microsoft later confirmed the issue, stating that it was impacting a "small number" of users, and posted workarounds until a fix could be made available.

The problem usually involved a system freeze after logging in, which rendered the device unresponsive. Microsoft stated that this occurred due to the apps and operating system being installed on separate drives. Now, after nearly one month, the company has announced that it has finally resolved the issue.

While the update on its original Microsoft Answers forum thread isn't quite as extensive, the company has clarified that the Windows Update which was released on August 31 contains a fix for the freezing issue. Microsoft also stated that users who uninstalled the Anniversary Update because of the problem can now revert to it using Windows Update Assistant, or by going to the Windows 10 download page and clicking on "Update Now".

With that being said, the company also mentioned that if you're still experiencing freezing issues even after installing the update, you should try the following methods:

Option 1: If you have a second administrator account on the PC that you can sign into, please do so and install the latest Windows 10 update, released on August 31st, 2016. After installin... Read more

Microsoft now plans March Windows 10 Mobile rollout

February has come and gone without the highly anticipated Windows 10 Mobile upgrade for legacy Lumia handsets. In an email to partners, seen by VentureBeat, Microsoft is now targeting a release this month, to occur after the regular monthly service updates for the two Windows 10-powered handsets already on the market, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL.

Unlike the previous schedule, reported by VentureBeat at the end of January, this one separates the upgrade from the service update. In other words, whereas the February rollout would have seen the update bundled into the upgrade, in March they are expected to be two distinct processes.

The rollout is said to begin passively, from Microsoft?s perspective, in that users will need to initiate it manually from their handsets. Only afterwards, on an unspecified timetable, will the company begin actively pushing the new firmware to eligible devices.

Microsoft had initially intended to upgrade in-market Lumias this past December, but the self-imposed deadline came and went. The February target was only messaged internally, so there has technically been just a single ? albeit months-long ? delay.

Was looking at BuildFeed, this is the last build listed there:

10.0.14346.1000.rs1_release.160512-1748

Since it looks like RS1 is pretty much feature complete, could this build be the final release?

Hello, Can you just please clarify the things about the recent i got for my Lumia 730..10.0.10586.545.? Whether it is Anniversary update of MS or jus cumulative update which is released every month, because i have seen the build 14797, which has reviewed by the people and has major changes made by MS in it. But, this build 10586 doesn't seem to have any drastic updates in it.. Please guide.

Answer:10.0.10586.545 is this Anniversary update build?

You pretty much answered your own question... 10586.xxx is part of the first Windows 10 build, while 14393.xxx is the Anniversary build.

Answer:Could build 14346 be the Anniversary Update RTM?

All Insider updates are Rs1, part by part as developed and deemed ready for release. With 2.5 months to go and judging by past updates, my guess is that we will get at least another 4 large updates until anniversary Rs1 upgrade to standard users.

Next year, in the spring, Microsoft will be releasing a new update for Windows 10 that they are calling the Creators update. Earlier this year, the company announced several new features are coming to the platform (a few enterprise enhancements too) and at WinHEC last week, they detailed a more bits of information about the initiatives for gaming on Windows 10 and Xbox.

You can check in settings > system > about > OS build
The statement from MS said it will roll out by region, model and time zone over the next few weeks. It's been a week since it released publicly and a few people have received it while many others haven't

New Windows 10 Cumulative Updates, Security Patches Coming This Week

This month?s Patch Tuesday will kick off tomorrow and in addition to the typical release cycle that includes security patches for Windows, Office and other software, there are also two highlights that everyone should have in mind.

First and foremost, Microsoft will release new cumulative updates for all Windows 10 versions released so far, including the original July 2015 version, November Update, and Anniversary Update.

These cumulative updates will be shipped through Windows Update and will bring computers fully up-to-date, supposing that they are actually capable of installing them ? in the last few months, cumulative updates have caused quite a lot of problems on Windows 10 computers and there were many cases when they simply failed to install for bugs that are still unknown.

The changelog of each cumulative update will be revealed tomorrow, but keep in mind that they require a system reboot, so IT admins should save work on Windows 10 computers before deployment.

Patch for Google-disclosed flaw
In addition to new cumulative updates, Microsoft will also deliver a patch for the security flaw that Google publicly disclosed last week and which is already being exploited in the wild.

Microsoft confirms that it recorded attacks from a group of Russian hackers known as Fancy Bear, but explained that Edge browser users were already secure thanks to patches that were shipped to Windows 10 systems. Ev... Read more

Alright networking guru's...we are a short time away from completing my new home, and I finally have a home network setup that I am happy with. Basically fully networked the house with cat5e and threw some extra conduit in if I want to upgrade in the future.

Told the electrician to dump everything into my basement and don't install anything else to save some money (turns out it is easy to go over budget when building a new house, so every bit helps).

So....18 drops are now nude in the basement.

My plan is to go as follows:

1) Cable modem to
2) Netgear N7000 (already own) to
3) 24 port switch (need help here) to
4) Rest of house

I will mostly just be streaming movies from my plex server, running file back-ups, transferring files, and running a few security cams.

NOW...my questions.

1) Do I really need a patch panel? Is it worth the extra trouble for a simple home network setup? I don't see many scenarios where I need to "patch" things through. I am dreading making a boatload of short cables to go from the patch panel to my switch. Should I just suck it up and do it? Do those of you with relatively straightforward home networks see the benefit?

2) 24 port switch...I'm not going to need a "fully managed" switch. I was likely thinking just midline "smart" switch. Any preferences here? The choices are overwhelming.

Let me know what you would do!

Answer:Finalizing my new home build - Need a switch

I'd go with a JGS524Ev2 "Unmanaged Plus" for some basic extra features on the switch or a JGS524PE for a similar model with POE for the security cams. Netgear seems to support this line of switches with firmware updates and I haven't known any ProSafe switches to die yet between friends and family. If you get a patch panel just buy a bunch of short cables, you don't need to hand make all of those. On the off chance you do end up making a few dozen CAT cable terminations, you will get real good at them real fast

When will Microsoft fix the issue of the Windows 10 Anniversary update killing webcams? I got my wife a new computer for Christmas, and the webcam worked fine. Updated to Winders 10 Anniversary edition, and *poof* no webcam. My Google-fu tells me that this is a very prevalent issue, so when will Microsoft finally fix the issue? I patched it with a registry hack, but for how long? Will the next update unfix my fix? This is unacceptable, and needs to be corrected.

On September 20 Microsoft pushed through the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to my computer - ever since then it does not work at all.  When I turn it on I get the HP logo and an occasional horizontal cursor blink in the upper left corner. Pressing F11 at powering on brings me to a troubleshooting screen per the instructions on HP website - I selected repair / recovery.  Repair progressed to 64% then seemed to stall for several minutes before the screen just went black and then nothing.   Repeated the process and "attempted repair failed".  Repeated the process and attempted recovery made it to 52% before crapping out. My computer was "born" on 11/11/2015 and apparently died a mere 10 months 9 days later.  I cannot seem to find any answers and I'm at my wits end.  My computer is still under warranty and I really need to get this back up and running! I don't know what to do next - do I need support from HP or Microsoft ? Can I take my computer to a nearby repair person or will that void my warranty? Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I am currently running Windows 10 Build 9926 due to having issues installing Build 10162 using a USB. I had Build 9926 installed before and successfully updated to 10162 however a failed graphics driver install forced me to reinstall and since Microsoft pulled build updates a few days ago I was stuck with 9926. Microsoft recently released Build 10240, however the update hasn't come through yet for me. I am on the fast ring and signed in with a Microsoft Account. I was wondering what is the normal time window for a build update to come through?

Answer:Windows 10 Build 10240 not coming through on Build 9926?

You should have had the update by now mate, I suggest you clean install a later version than the one your on, if your computer can take it and try to update from there.

After installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Build (1607) startup takes about 90 seconds to complete. There is a black screen that appears after the HP logo and the spinning circle appears. This black screen is shown for about 90 seconds before startup continues. This problem occurred last year on this laptop when I initially installed Windows 10. It is definitely related to the fact that the machine has two video adapters. An AMD Radeon adapter and an Intel adapter. If I disable either adapter, it boots quickly. The problem with turning off either adapter is that the screen resolution is not correct. Circles look elliptical. I found a better fix for this last year but I have forgotten what it was. So now startup has regressed to the former problem. Does anyone know what the fix is? Before the anniversary update, it was working with both cards enabled.  1) This is NOT a virus. So don't even go there.2) I have used device manager to disable the adapters and  uninstall drivers. Windows 10 reinstalled drivers; no help3) Used AMDs device detection app; it reported the latest driver was installed4) Did a hard reset on the laptop

When is the official Windows 10 Mobile update coming? Or is it coming at all? I really just don't want to mess up with preview tools anymore, especially not with my new 930 just to be sure that if i installed the preview, and when i would roll back to 8.1 (when the official w10m update comes) i get the right OS version to roll back to, and by then the right w10m update version for lumia 930 :p I mean that I am afraid that I would get windows 8.1 version for 512Gb RAM or 1Gb RAM phones, and by then not getting features for this phone from the windows 10 mobile because the phone would think it is a lumia 520 or something, and not 930 like it is :/ sorry for my english and explaining skills, but this really bothers me.. Please tell me is the official update coming at all or do I have to use just preview? :/ If the official update is not coming, i feel cheated because the release date is pushing forwars all the time xb

Hello, I never had problems with Microsoft updating my computer when I turn it off. But now, almost everyday, I get this YELLOW ICON (with exclamation point inside) at the bottom right hand of my computer with the other icons, alerting me of 3 updates, which I suspect are the same 3 updates I've been getting for days now.

I did a Virus sweep yesterday (Malwarebytes and Norton) and showed no threats. Absent that, I don't know what else to do.

Please help? Step-by-step if possible.

Thank you.

PS - I have an old Windows XP. I probably need to upgrade more memory , that's another issue all by itself. Don't know where to take my computer for that. BestBuy is going out of business in my area.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2017 But 2017 missing quite a few protection on Anniversary build.

I decided to wait for Kaspersky patch & use Windows Defender.

I use Rollback Rx Pro And some Windows Updates could mess Rollback so I keep Windows Updates to Notify for download And uninstall Rollback to install Windows Updates.

But the prob is with Windows Updates set to Notify for download...Windows Defender updates are also not installed but notified.

So until Kaspersky patch I think to use other security software.

Hello all.
Running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I've updated from Version 1511 to the anniversary update, 1607.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The update went well, no hiccups, no errors. Used windows update, let it downloaded and install and rebooted. Alas, system still shows OS Version 1511.
Used update again, same thing, rebooted, 1511.
Went to the windows site, downloaded the windows10upgrade9252.exe, ran it, same exact issue, rebooted, still showing version 1511.
Error logs show no issues. Disabled all external drives, turned off anti-virus, etc, repeated, rinsed, rebooted, still version 1511.
Only think I've not done is burned an ISO to DVD and updated from that.
Any clues as to what's going on?
Thanks!
Nelson Davis

Microsoft today said it will deliver a single security update on Tuesday to patch just one vulnerability in Windows.

However, the company acknowledged that it does not yet have a fix for a crippling bug in Windows 7 that went public nearlytwo months ago. The expected update will patch a vulnerability rated "critical" --

Microsoft's most serious rating in its four-step scoring system -- in Windows 2000. The bug also affects Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, as well as Windows Server 2003, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2, but is tagged as "low" for those editions.

Microsoft downplayed the threat even to Windows 2000 users. "The Exploitability Index rating for this issue will not be high, which lowers the overall risk," said Jerry Bryant, a Microsoft security spokesman, in a post to the company's security
response center blog today. Date: 7 January 2010

Microsoft will Issue a Critical Patch Next Week for Windows 7 IE8

Microsoft is expected to release a security patch to address a Critical vulnerability in IE8. For December, Microsoft is planning to release six new security bulletins that are expected different vulnerabilities in several Windows products. Some of the vulnerabilities are in Windows7, some in Internet Explorer 8, and some in Microsoft Office Products. On the office side the vulnerabilities affect Project, Word, and Worlks 8.5.

Microsoft Security Response Center
There is a range to the bulletins including three that are Critical and three that are considered Important. The Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for December 2009 outlines these vulnerabilities:
Vulnerabilities in Internet Authentication Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Project Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explore
Vulnerabilities in Active Directory Federation Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Vulnerability in Local Security Authority Subsystem Service Could Allow Denial of Service
Vulnerability in WordPad and Office Text Converters Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Proof of Concept for the security flaws was released to the public recently, which prompted Microsoft?s response. In computer security the term proof of concept is often used as a synonym for a zero-day exploit which, mainly for its early creation, does not take full advantage of some vulne... Read more

Big Patch Tuesday Coming Next Week

Sysadmins beware! Microsoft is set to deliver 10 security updates on Patch Tuesday next week. The patches, six of which are marked ?critical?, will be for Windows, IE, Word, and Excel and will be the most since October 2008.

The six critical updates will patch Windows (which gets two of the updates), IE, Word, Excel and Office. "The red flag is going to be [the] IE [update]." said Storms. "It's critical, it's on all versions [of Windows], and it's even critical in Vista for IE7 and IE8."

I have a Samsung 840 EVO.When installing Windows, is there a difference between creating recovery media from the original HDD and recovering to the SSD versus simply installing Windows 8.1 from the ISO and downloading drivers from the Lenovo support site? Answer:My W540 is coming in this week, and I have some questions.

1. I don't have a W540, but I would assume you can remove and add different drives in the caddy.2. Using the restore partition includes all "junkware" initially on the system. Installing Windows then specific drivers and programs allows a more customized experience.UEFI (unified extensible firmware interface) boot requires Global unique identifier Partition Table (GPT) as opposed to the older Master Boot Record (MBR). If your existing drive is formatted in MBR, you will need to adjust BIOS settings to enable legacy boot in order for it to work properly.4. You need both Nvidia and Intel drivers and you can get them from Lenovo (less frequently updated) or directly from Nvidia & Intel. You can also enable only discrete graphics, only integrated graphics or both (Optimus) in BIOS.5. No special drivers are needed.6. The 90 watt adapter will probably charge the system (slowly) when the system is powered off. It will NOT power the system while running.7. I think Lenovo estimates 6 hours.8. Currently, the largest 42mm M.2 SSD is 128GB, although there are 256GB 42mm M.2 SSDs soon to be released.9. I'm not sure. It's probably 1600 Mhz, but I'm not sure if they use standard or low voltage.

We couldn't install Windows 10
0xC1900101 - 0x40017
We've set you PC back to where it was right before you started installing Windows 10
The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation
What was tried: Connected straight to ethernet, Turned off wireless and Defender A/V, Removing the D/L files, D/L fresh from ISO file, launched install file, went through approx 50% and PC rebooted - nor stuck on black screen with swirling dots for OVER 4 hours with a brief HD access every couple of seconds.
Rebooted again -- still swirling dots on black screen. Tried again, same results.
Rebooted with F8 to get original Win 10 back.
Turned on "metered connection" option for WLAN to stop this update from happening. But now I cannot get and security updates for this machine.
Please suspend this D/L until fixed. Cannot afford to have no protection!

Hi everyone..

has anyone had any trouble with the IE update KB3021952 that was released last week.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and IE9.

I have been very cautious about installing Windows updates recently due to the flawed updates that they have released in the past few months.

source (bleepingcomputer.com): Here's What You Need to Know About Mozilla's New Firefox Browser Coming Next Week

Mozilla plans to release Firefox 57 ? codenamed Firefox Quantum ? next week on Tuesday, November 14.Click to expand...

In less than a week, Mozilla will flip the switch on a completely new browser with the release of Firefox 57, a version that's been rebuilt with a new browser engine core, a new user interface, revamped settings panel, and with a new add-ons API.

Firefox 57 is the end of the road of a few Mozilla internal projects that aimed to fix most of Firefox's previous problems, such as speed and frequent crashes that have driven users to other browsers.

But all these internal changes will also create some strife and problems for some Firefox users. Before users update, they'll need to know some of the issues Firefox 57 fixes ... and inadvertently causes.Click to expand...

The "add-ons" problem
The biggest issue that's bound to arise next week is related to Firefox's new add-ons system ? the WebExtensions API.

The new WebExtensions API is compatible with the WebExtensions standard support by all Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Vivaldi, Opera), and the new Microsoft Edge browser, meaning developers of some Chrome extensions may soon port their add-ons to work on Firefox.

Mozilla announced support for the WebExtensions API in the summer of 2015, and it shipped the new API into production with ... Read more

There's the problem of transferring the data from my old hard drive to new hard drive (I don't have a CD burner). Before I started getting nervous and realizing that there's internet and other stuff depending on if I do it right, my method of doing this was to hook the old one up as a slave. Now, I don't know. SO...

1.) This is a 2-parter. First off, as someone who's put RAM and installed the DSL Ethernet card into the computer, do you think I'm fit for the slave method if I just research the procedure (hoping you can give the link)? If not, is there a safer method of transfer that I can pursue on my own?

2.) My cousin has offered to do this for me. He's a lot better at this than me, but I still want to try. If there isn't a real safe way to do this, or my fear kicks in, I'll send it to him. Do any of you guys know of a free program that gets rid of data from my hard drive for good? I know that the recycle bin thing isn't cutting it, and I want a fresh start on this computer. Please don't get into what I mean; if you really want to know, it's partly an embarrassment issue. Just recommend or say no.

First it started with our internet modem going out a few night back, couldnt get it to work for anything until i reinstalled that and redid my router. a few days later we realized there was a "virus" on our computer we did everything we could to get it off to no avail. Eventually we did a recovery (put it back to the factory settings) which didnt work either. We had to do that NUMEROUS times to be able to finally use the computer. it went from bad to worst to just bad again. Ive tried anti virus softwares/malware everything i could think of. eventually someone at microsoft told me to install tdsskiller, which didnt find anything. someone else told me to malwarebytes.org, another one said hitman pro 3.5, and etc NOTHING IS WORKING!!!!

i have Avg free 9.0 installed now which was able to find the viruses before but cleaning them out didnt work either. now none of the anti virus programs can find the trojans at all. except Hitman Pro gave me, "Possible variant of the TDL3 (Alias Alureon) rootkit detected", but im still left with not being able to update windows.

yesterday i manually installed service pack 1 and 2 which made the pc work better but still didnt fix the problem. a few days before that i started getting a popup from microsoft that said "Host process for windows services, stopped working and was closed -- A problem caused that application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is avail." then ano... Read more

During this week we have built and reloaded a total of 10 systems.  8 of those computers were built or loaded on the 9th (Patch Tuesday).  After doing the updates, we can no longer do updates or install Microsoft Security.  2 of the 10 was were installed and updated 12/10 - They update and work as they should.

I have attempted to roll back with no luck.  We are in the process of formatting and reinstalling 2 of the systems to test.  Anyone have an clue as to what updates caused this issue.

Answer:Windows update week of 12/9

Update KB3004394. It messes with certificates and also keeps people from doing updates.

I am trying to update from Windows 10 OS Build 10586.589 to the Anniversary Update but my computer freezes at 1% progress. I have tried everything I can think of including: Unplugging all extra SATA drives except my main SSD, unplugging my wireless network adapter, unplugging all USB devices (even mouse and keyboard), removing old drivers and updating outdated ones, and installing the update through a USB flash drive. It always gets to the same part and freezes until I shutdown my computer and lose no data.

Microsoft is gearing up for an important stage in the testing of its first major update to the latest iteration of the Windows client. The Redmond company traditionally releases the first Service Pack for a new Windows OS approximately one year after the platform was finalized, and is currently cooking SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. A third-party report indicates that the software giant has started preparing Windows 7 copies for the delivery of the first external testing development milestone of Windows 7 SP1.

According to WithinWindows, Microsoft is following the same strategy for Windows 7 as for previous Beta service pack rollouts outside of Redmond. In this regard, the company began enabling a check within Windows 7 operating systems, which would qualify the respective versions as candidates for testing the SP1 Beta. The process involves refreshes served through Windows Update in order to add a registry key as well as an associated value which will permit members in the Windows 7 SP1 Beta testing pool to download the new bits.

Here is the Key added to Windows 7 RTM machines: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Win7SP1 and this is the value coming with it SPORTM (REG_SZ). At the time of this article, Microsoft had yet to either confirm or deny the fact that external tester had been approached for Windows 7 SP1 Beta testing.

Don?t be deceived by the fact that Windows 7 was released on October 22nd,... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 SP1 Is Cooking, External Testing Build Coming

There is no denying that, if you want the latest news/rumours, that Rafael Rivera is definitely ahead of the pack. However, in this case either deliberately or though a misunderstanding I think he may have got hold of the wrong info. The link shown is, I believe, from Windows 7 Build 7227 (with SP1). I do notice that he has omitted the date column. It was discussed on the TEchnet forum, and it was described as only a misrepresented leak of the result of Microsoft testing serviceability for the next upgrade of that Windows 7 beta. Those running the retail release are , in essence, already using that SP. (imo)

Hey everyone,
This post is not meant to put your hopes up or anything but I was just speculating about whether snapchat will finally make it to windows after BUILD 2017. I wanted to know your opinions regarding this.
The reason I'm posting about this is that I recently went back to W10M from android and the only thing bothering me is Snapchat (after all these years) still not showing any interest in making a UWP app for windows.

Hi all
everything OK until the weekend when after what appeared to be a less than satisfactory Windows update I can not use System Restore to go back to last week (main problem signature 6.1.7600.16385). I started the process because I was not hearing sound despite all drivers etc being in place and working properly. I also can not get the wireless card to communicate with the router now (although I still have access with the wired desktop). I ran a CHKDSK /r overnight (results attached). I am naturally wondering if it is either a system corrupt or a virus (my suspicions were aroused here when a malwarebytes AV scan kept stopping after a few seconds in safe mode). Obviously there is a recommended list of workarounds for this but I would appreciate what the current line of thinking on this was? speccy profile below followed by edited extract (for space limitations) minitoolbox output as well as the appropriate attachments (NB CBS.zip too big to attach)

many thanks!

I had to purchase a new HDD as my old one went bad. Doing so I had reinstalled windows 7 to which over a week now trying to get updates which to no avail has not worked.

Steps I have taken:

1. Downloaded Surt which it just searches for updates for over 2 hours with nothing happening.

2. ran sfc /scannow 4x times with nothing being found.

3. Ran the sfc /scannow boot with nothing found.

4. ran chkdisk with nothing found

5. changed my network to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 been running for an hour now with nothing found.

6. tried downloading and running https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3112343 to which also just searches for updates through standalone with nothing happening.

I am clueless at this point.... attached is a copy of the cbs, thanks!

Answer:Windows 7 update not updating after a week

I actually found a fix reading around the forums that worked perfectly that I bet alot of people never seen or have tried and I added an extra step to doing it.

Vickyv had posted this below
This has worked for me every time:

The solution:

Stop the Windows Update Service (wuauserv).
Download and install KB3050265
reboot
Download and install KB3102810
Reboot and check for updates again. All of our machines found their required updates in less than 5 minutes.

Now these steps didn't exactly work as the standalone would just be searching for updates without nothing happening for hours. So if this is happening to anyone else please follows these steps.

1. Go into Task manager and make sure to stop the Windows Update Service (wuauserv).

2. Now in task manager go to services tab, then bottom right corner open "services". Should bring you into a pop up. Scroll down to the windows update service wuauserv and right click hit restart.

3. download patch one specified above and double click to install, it should actually open standalone and take 30 seconds to install the patch. restart should pop up asking to do so, click restart.

4. download the patch two specified above and double click to install, same as last patch. then restart.

5. rerun your normal windows updater for a while and you should finally see updates being found.

Hi Folks. You know how when you download update files and patches for XP from M$oft a little icon appears in your taskbar which if you hover your mouse over will bring up the percentage of a download achieved so far?Well my little icon has been sitting there for about a week showing 0% download. It used to be when you clicked on it you could get it to pause, but it's not reacting at all to clicking.I wouldn't mind except it's obviously absorbing some of the system's resources and it's also obviously something gone glitchy. I think the related process is WUAUCLT.EXECan someone tell me how to turn this icon/process off safetly?(I tried disabling the wuauclt process, and it turned off ok.....and then turned itself back on again.)The OS is WinXP SP1 but Not SP2.Cheers for any ideas.

Hey there, I haven't seen a BSOD since the 90s! Now it has happened 4 times since Friday. Mostly when I am away from computer.

I did do the Windows update for this week. I do them pretty regularly. I have Win 7 Home Premium 64bit; SP1.

I have followed the instructions to attach the "dump." (hopefully correctly)

My Computer Savvy on scale of 1-10, I am maybe a 4. :-)

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks, KJ.

Answer:BSOD after Windows Update this week; related?

It may be related. The crash dump is not very precise about it.

If it is a stray BSOD, you may overlook it. But if it continue to occur, better you uninstall the suspect update. Windows Update - Uninstall an Update
Also, as a caution, Test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest86+ for at least 8 consecutive passes.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

i have no idea where to even start; but i REALLY need my PC running right away. i have a lot of art projects and a couple essays i need to finish and turn in!

As of now, i can't get internet. First it was a Gateway problem, but now it just says my ethernet cable is unplugged. it isnt and i have tried 2 other cables. I am in safe mode right now trying to uninstall the update (that supposedly failed by the way) but the windows update screen is stuck at loading.

i had a few startup programs fail and give weird errors. SystemExplorer being on and SyncThing if that matters

i have tried rolling back my network driver and that did nothing.

please help.

EDIT: Got to uninstall update window but nothing more recent than November 14th. So the updates must have partly installed maybe? just enough to completely screw me over? i have nothing to recover from either according to Backupa dn Recovery

OKAY Ethernet cable is now recognized, just no internet.

Update History says "Requires a restart to finish installing" however i have restarted several times.
WiFi connects, but there is no internetBoth are connected to an "unidentified network"

To be more clear. I am connected to an unidentified public network, but with no internet
