Power Supply Light Blinking When Plugged to Motherboard Only

Question: Power Supply Light Blinking When Plugged to Motherboard Only

Hello, I the power supply light of my Media Center m1050y is blinking and the PC does not turn on at all. So I tried the troubleshooting sequence posted here in the HP Support site, and after unplugging all the cables and replugging them one by one, it turns out that the light blinks only when the PS is connected to the mother board (the connection is a white, wide plug with about 12 pins - pardon my ignorance on the actual name). I looked on the internet about trying to narrow the cause on the motherboard and I unplugged the front USB ports, the fan, and other "solutions" without any luck. Does this mean the motherboard is fried and either I need to replace the motherboard or look for another PC? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What troubleshooting sequences did you try......was it this. Suggestion: get a hair dryer, and use it at the rear vent. See if the light stops flashing. Read about the hair dryer tip here.

I have a Sony VGC-RB42G computer. I recently moved my computer, cleaned off all the dust, and when I plugged everything back in, it won't power up. The light on the power supply blinks green, inside the motherboard also has a green light that blinks as well. It has a ticking sound too, but I am not sure if it is coming from the power supply or the motherboard. Any idea what could be wrong.

FYI, I have already unplugged everything from the power supply, pulled out the ram, checked the battery, and put everything back together and still no change. One thing I thought was strange was after I unplugged everything, I pulled the power into the power supply again and this time the green light came on but did not blink. It stayed solid.

Answer:No Power, Blinking green light on power supply and motherboard

Sounds like a Power Supply problem.

I have a Dell Dimension E510 that as of yesterday, won't power up anymore. The power light blinks orange and the computer does nothing when the power button is pushed or held in. It's about 16 months old and is out of warranty, so I'm trying to diagnose the problem myself.

I did some searching on the internet and found that this seems to be a common issue on these Dells, sort of a long term infant mortality issue. The most common causes seem to be a bad PSU, MOBO or a shorted USB input.

I've done some diagnostic checks/testing so far and am now stuck. Here's what I know.

- The USB ports don't appear to be shorted. I also disconnected the connector for the USB (which includes the power switch :banghead and it doesn't change any of the results that follow.
- I removed the power supply and jumped Power On (terminal 14, green wire) of the main ATX connector to ground. The fan comes on and all voltages (3.3, 5 and 12v)check out, including around 5.35v at Power Good (terminal 8, gray wire).
- With the power supply back in and everything connected, there is only 3.3mv at Power Good. As I understand it, this would normaly point to a bad power supply; however, all of the voltages check out when the unit is disconnected from everything.

Is is still possible that the power supply is bad, or is it more likely (or definitely) that the MOBO is the culprit.

Any help, including suggestions for additional testing is greatly appreciated.

I am working on a frends desktop that recently might have been hit by lightning. After a big storm their desktop would no longer power on. Now, I am no stranger to computers. I unplugged the motherboard main connector and I get a solid green light when I plug the psu in. Plug the main connector back in and plug the psu in I get blinking light again. So either its the PSU or mainboard. Im thinking psu since usually that is what goes first, but at the same time I am leaning towards mainboard. what do you all think? On another note, Are these boards proprietary? I have a few standard ATX PSUs I could test my theory with but not if I have to rewire them.

My mom gave me a Dell Dimension 4700 computer that was acting up. She said it would turn it's self off randomly and she thought it was a virus. When I brought the computer to my place, it powered on once, then I went to turn it on again and nothing. No lights, no power what so ever. So after doing some research I bought a new power supply for it. I just replaced the power supply and plugged the computer in and now there is a blinking amber light in the front and a solid green light on the motherboard but it won't turn on. I have checked all of the connections and they are properly seated. Any ideas what is causing the problem?

Hi, i recently bought a new computer and decided to give my parents my old one. Before doing so, i took the side off and blew out all of the dust. I also took out my video capture card since they wouldnt need it. Well, after all of that i hook it up for them and it wont come on. I check out the back of the PC, and the power supply light is blinking. After some unplugging and plugging in of the power cables from the power supply, i notice the light starts blinking(and clicking) when i plug in the motherboard.I figured maybe the heat sinc had came loose from the processor after reading some possibilities online and figured i could just but some thermal paste and redo it myself. After applying new thermal paste and getting everything set, i try the computer again and its still doing the same thing. Im frustrated at this point because before i cleaned it out, it worked great.Since i was able to narrow it down to the power cable plugging into the motherboard, i figured i would mess with it a little. I noticed that as soon as i started to plug it in the light would blink but when i would pull it out and it stopped. Then the next time it would go further before it started to blink. After removing it and plugging it back in i was able to get it to plug in without the light blinking. The computer powers up, works as if everything is fine. I can even shutdown the computer and the start it up days later without issue. Now for the problem. I was plugging some stuff in earlier and hit the ... Read more

We got a Compaq Presario S6500NX from a friend who had upgraded to another computer and we can't get it to work. It ran fine before he brought it to us, however, once we got it here and tried to power it up it wouldn't start at all.

On the power supply in the back the green light blinks and clicks rapidly when the cord is plugged in, and pressing the power button does nothing at all.

Interestingly, a few minutes ago I took it out of storage, (we got the computer months ago and gave up when we couldn't get it running) plugged it in by itself and it powered up just fine, the fan turned on and everything! So I opened it up and cleaned out some of the dust (I didn't have it plugged into a monitor or anything, I just wanted to see if it was still doing the same thing it had months ago) and, lo and behold, when I tried to turn it on again with everything plugged in, I got the blinking/clicking green light and no power up.

What could be the problem here? I know the whole thing isn't totally shot because it DID power up just fine a few minutes ago. But now we're back to the blinking clicking light (instead of the steady green glow that usually happens when the power supply cord is plugged in). It leads me to believe that something's loose, but I don't dare mess with the power supply box unless I know what I'm doing...

Another question is, if the power supply isn't fixable, would it be possible to replace it with the power supply ... Read more

During a recent storm, lightning struck very close to my house and we lost power immediately after the lightning strike. Once power was restored, my HP Pavilion a6000 would not re-start. The computer and all the peripherals were protected (I thought) by two surge protectors.

On closer inspection, I found that the green LED on the power supply was blinking. I disconnected all the connections coming from the power supply, and when I did, the green light went from blinking to steady on. I re-connected the leads one by one, and the light stayed on until I connected the 20 pin connection to the motherboard. As soon as I connected the 20 pin lead to the motherboard, the solid green LED went back to flashing.

I assume from the diagnostics that something on the motherboard was fried by the lightning? I know how to replace a power supply, but have never dealt with motherboard issues, so not sure how to proceed. The computer is only 6 months old and I would like to save it, but don't know what I might be looking as far as expense and time involved to repair.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

More than likely its a bad battery, but it could be the power adapter too. Does that battery charge? My suggestion would be to chat with Dell Tech support:

Hi. Tonight I had a problem with my laptop. It was in sleeping mode, and when I open the lid there were no mouse function and no touch screen function. So the only thing I could do was to press the power button for 3 seconds to turn it off, but it didn't completely, because the screen turn off, but the power button light is blinking just like when it is on sleep mode, and I'm not sure if the hard drive light was on, off or blinking before this, but now is blinking. I press the power button and nothing happen, I press it for 3 seconds and nothing happen. I even did the HDMI connection to another monitor, but both monitors don't show anything, not even recognize that something is connected to the HDMI port in the new monitor. There is no sound, nothing, just the 2 blinking lights. What should I do? Thanks PS: I'm not sure if it's Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit. It was upgraded from Windows 8

hp media center m1000 steady blinking light when plugged in. will not go on. anyone know what this means?

Answer:HP Media Center m1000 steady blinking light when plugged in

Sounds like a fault with the battery to me.

Have you tried removing the battery completely, and then running it off of the mains lead only?

EDIT: I see google lists this as a PC, so the above doesn't apply.

Usually on a PC the blinking light is an indication that the computer is in sleep mode. If it won't power up, try removing the power cable, and then hit the power button (to discharge electrics) and then reconnect, and try powering it up then.

Why would a computer take hours and days before a display? When the system is turn on very ofter the power light keeps blinking and the harddrive light is on but nothing shows on the monitor for hours or days and may not at all. Powering off and re-powering rarely helps it just have to be left alone and comes on whenever if ever.. Thanks for help

Answer:The power light keeps blinking and the harddrive light is on

Try a new signal cable from PC to monitor. If no change, try a new graphics card.If still no change, test the hard drive with "Seagate SeaTools for DOS".Click the "Download" tab here: download is an ISO file, so you'll also need to install "IMGBurn" from here: IMGBurn to create a CD from the ISO file, then boot your faulty computer from it. The testing program will open. Select the hard drive and test it. If it fails the test you need to replace the hard drive. If hard drive passes the test it's okay, so test the RAM modules with "Memtest86" which is also an ISO file, so you need to create a CD from that too:

My Inspiron 15R N5110 won't come on. I've tried both battery and 2 different ac adapters. I've removed the battery, unplugged it, and held the power button for 30 seconds to discharge the system, but it still won't come on.
I took the laptop apart and everything looks alright, but the DC jack was slightly brown on top so I replaced the DC jack board. It still won't work.
I made sure the connections are tight (the DC jack and other USB board) by screwing them down. The only thing that happens that shows any life is when the battery is in. The power button, power indicator light in front, and the little "gears" light blink white for just a moment, then off, about every 5 seconds.

Any ideas? If I have to replace the motherboard, what is the difference between 0G8RW1 and 0VVN1W? I'm not worried about the product key not validating - may even put Windows 8 on it.

-Asus A7VBX-LA Motherboard (no physical damage)
Im sure its either the mobo or the cpu, but my cpu has a dark brown spot right smack dab in the middle on the side with the pins.
Please just give me a straight up answer with some backup, i tried yahoo answers and they were all idiots...ty!

Answer:Cpu or motherboard, cpu light not blinking, no display??!!!!

Remember that just because Fans run amd CD Drawers open and close doesn't mean the PSU is working properly. It could still not be providing the required power to run the motherboard. And the PSU is usually the least expensive and easiest fix as well.

By dark Brown spot are you refering to a spot that looks like it is trying to become charcoal?

if the ac plug is unplugged then i can get the led to turn off but once pushed, it ony flashes. no results

warranty is expired.
unit manufactured april 23 2015

i currently have it plugged in but no flashing light as i have not pushed the power button. im hoping that it will take a charge or correct itself with time.

what do you suggest? thank you

Answer:i have a lenovo edge 15 model80k9. led power light is blinking but computer will not repond. no power up . the battery is "s

Try the following...

1. Take out (or take it off) the charger.
2. Next take out the battery
3. Now hold down power button for 20 seconds and then rinsert battery.
4. Now put it on the charger again

NOTE: Make sure charger is plugged into the main power supply (not an extension cord, surge protector, etc.)

Sometimes, when the device is not plugged in directly, it doesn't get the power it needs. Holding the power button, while you restart it, clears out the temporary ram (no it won't delete anything you have saved) and will give the device access to the ram it needs.

I have a Dell XPS 13 that had the motherboard replaced a few months ago.  When attempting to boot the front led blinks amber twice, then white twice repeatedly. The device will start up but never boots to the dell logo or the Windows OS. This is with the AC plugged in and also with the internal battery plugged in.  After a few months, I had the same issue with the laptop yesterday.  Is there another issues other than the motherboard or could it be that the "refurbished motherboard" came from another defective Dell XPS 13 9350?

Answer:Dell XPS 13 won't boot up and has blinking amber light (twice) plus blinking white light (once) for the 2nd time

Does the screen gets stuck at Dell logo?
Are you able to boot to "advanced boot options? by pressing F8?
Also run the diagnostics by pressing the F12 during startup and let me know the results.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.

I was given an Inspiron 620 tower that won't boot.  There's no light of any kind associated with the power button on the front of the case, but the amber light on the motherboard (near the SATA ports) blinks.  The power supply tests OK, so I'm wondering if  the problem is likely to be anything fixable besides it being a bad board.

It's just about 100% certainly a bad system board -- not much repairable about these.

So, my motherboard has 3 red lights (ASUS Z97-AR), one in the top right, one above the two large ports where you can plug a GPU in, and one in the bottom right. When I have a GPU plugged in, the one above the GPU turns on red, and the monitor shows a black screen. I can hear the computer boot, the Windows startup sound plays through my headphones, but no connection is established to the computer whatsoever. Yes, everything is plugged in. Yes, I have updated the BIOS.

However, I did have the BIOS screen open and I may have messed around with it on accident just because I was looking around at all the options. Don't know if there's a button I could have pressed that said 'DON'T TOUCH EVER' and I managed to touch, but neither of the two GPU's I have available, a GTX 960 and a GTX 760, will work.

When neither card is in place, computer boots just fine, but I want to use my GPU's. Can't play Fallout 4 without one! Help please.

Motherboard- ASUS Z97-AR
Processor- Intel i7 4790K
RAM- 4x Corsair 4 gig (16 total)
Brand new power supply, purchased after the issues started happening.
2X Seagate 1 TB Hard Drives.

Answer:Motherboard has a red light on when GPU plugged in.

According to the User Manual, that LED indicates a problem with the video card, but doesn't recommend any troubleshooting steps.

Without a video card installed, boot into the BIOS, restore factory defaults, save the settings and exit. After a reboot, shutdown and try installing a video card.

Ensure you are connecting power to the card.

Hi Recently my Y580 started acting strange:While doing normal work it's rock stable and everything but when i turn on anything that demands high system performance (i.e. games) the whole system starts to go haywire - fps drop to minimal values, the power button led starts to blink and windows detects the computer as disconnected from the power supply. If i disconnect and reconnect the power adapter it works for a few seconds and goes crazy again. I have allready ordered a new power adapter since the old one is falling apart anyway but i wont get it till Tuesday.Any ideas are welcome - i feel comfortable about taking the whole machine apart if it helps. Now that i think of it i remember that the chasis shocked me once or twice recently - damaged power cable between power socket and motherboard? Thanks in advance

Answer:Y580 Blinking power button led and power supply turns off

How many watts is your power brick rated at? I had a similar issue when I used a brick from another laptop. It had the right voltage and the same plug, but it was delivering less power than the original one. When doing basic office stuff it was working fine and charging the battery, but when gaming it would work fine for 2 minutes and then display the same symptoms as your Y580.
Hopefully you ordered the right, more powerful brick. I think the right one is rated at 90W, but I'm not sure.

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery, and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove the base cover and memory modules;  reinstall both.
Try powering up on AC only - if it will but won't with the battery, the battery is faulty.
If it still won't power up  after the foregoing, the mainboard is bad.

I've had Windows 8 sitting around since February, and got around to installing it yesterday. So far all is well, except for when I shut my computer off the power LED will keep flashing. At first I thought my computer was just in sleep mode, but after hitting a couple keys that was not the case. Is there a setting some where that would cause this. I know it's a minor issue but damn that LED is bright.

My systems specs
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300EVGA 123-YW-E175-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3750640AS 750GB CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800Yeah this machine is over five years old, working on getting a new one together soon.

As a test you could try turning Fast Startup off, Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 8
The Fast Startup uses a hybrid sleep mode and that may be why your power LED is blinking.

Thinking that the new ram might be the problem he took it out, put the old back in and it STILL wouldnt turn on, and the light still blinks. Apparently it happend last time he unplugged his computer, although i don't know why he did it then. He said that last time he set ti aside and later (week+) plugged it back in and it worked. What would the problem be and how could we fix it?

I have a dell mini 10v that uses windows xp. week before last i noticed that my computer's power light was blinking red. what could be causing this problem? when I touch the charger, ever so lightly, or barely touch the pc, the computer will power off. after jiggling the wire to the charger, the power light comes back on, and is blinking red. sometimes i do not even have to touch the pc, it powers off on its own.

i then have to press the power button for the computer to start up.

i was told i needed a new charger, which i purchased, but the power light is still blinking red. i went to the power option and my battery is at 55% and does not change. what is causing this? do I need a new battery? i checked to see if my power option was set on stand by. it was and so i changed it, but the light is still blinking red. does anybody have any suggestions?

i was told t remove the battery for a few minutes and then reinstall, but i cringe at having to do that. the screws in the back are so small i am not sure i can even get the panel out, but if i have to, then i will.

what should i do? thanks for the help

I needed to replace my keyboard on my Thinkpad Yoga 20CD, so I swapped parts, and long story short, no post, no BIOS, no external video.  When I plug in the AC adapter, I get 3 blinking red lights on the "i" Thinkpad LED.  If I press the power button, the backlight on the keyboard comes on for 1 second, fades away, and the red LED stays on.  Fan on the CPU spins for about 3 seconds, then stops.  There is a chip on the motherboard underneath the card reader that gets EXTREMELY hot on both the AC power and battery, even without turning it on.  I guess I just need to know if I somehow fried the board when swapping parts?  If there is a short somewhere on the board?  Is there anything I can do to get it to boot, and prevent it from getting so hot?  I've tried a complete power drain, removing the CMOS battery, and leaving it sit overnight with nothing plugged in, all to no avail.  Any help or suggestions wold be greatly appreciated.

A friend gave me an old switch he had found, however it seems to be broken.
It's a d-link des-3526 managed 24-port switch.

The power light is blinking, and it does not have any lights light up when cables are plugged in, neither on the computers network card or on the switch.

The network cable is good, it works with a different switch, and I have tried using a different power cord.

Any way to get this working?

Answer:Switch Power light Blinking

Anything on the serial console?

Assuming the blinking indicates a fault, it's probably not something you're going to be able to repair yourself, but the console may indicate what the fault is.

Now that it's summer, my T420 is back to not booting if it doesn't feel like it. As before, I press the power button, and instead of doing anything, the power light starts flashing, one second on, one second off, forever or until I get bored and pull the battery out for a second or two. I've gone through all the threads even vaguely related to it, which are full of all sorts of weird fixes that don't work for me  (I haven't tried the eye of newt ones yet), but none of them answers the obvious question: What condition does the flashing power light signal? It's obviously something that the firmware or hardware is designed to do under a specific set of circumstances, but so far no one (least of all from Lenovo) has mentioned what they are. I've tried taking it to the repair shop (MicroCenter), but the problem is that it never shows the problem at the repair shop.   It seems like if it's in a perfectly temperature and humidity controlled space for a long time, like your average repair shop, the problem goes away.  Or it used to, anyway.  Since I haven't found a set of specific conditions that consistently trigger the problem, I can't show it to the shop. There are a lot of things I like about the T420.  But I can't deal with a laptop that only works when it feels like it, and which has a problem that a lot of people share but the manufacturer isn't helpful with, so I think my next one (i.e., after I give up on this one) will ... Yo, this is my first post : ) I searched for this topic, but my question is pretty specific...

Yesterday i was on my computer and all was well, except my sound wasn't working. i don' thave a sound card so it's directly connected to my motherboard - that was annoying, but then my keyboard backlight kept blinking on and off and started entering in a lot of typing in my computer. They keyboard problem might be an isolated issue though cause it's given me problems before.

Well it didn't look like any immdediate danger so i went to sleep. This morning though, my computer wouldn't start up... the power light was (and is still) blinking on and off when it's plugged in. I tried switiching out a different cable, a different wall plug, and waiting a lot, etc. Well it's definitely the PSU - but i'm not sure if that's it.

I want to go get it repaired cause i'm a noodle amed choir girl with no hardware experience, but i don't know if i should just get the psu replaced or should i look at a new motherboard too? the sound wasn't working yesterday, and i'm not sure about the keyboard incident, but it'ss just started giving me all this trouble.

Also, my setup is really old, and kinda crappy. I have a Sony Vaio. I'm inexperienced with hardware issues so bare with me if some of this is not necessary. The PSU wattage is like 250, and seems to me, very weak. i dont' know the details about my mothereboard, bu... Read more

While the laptop was shutting down and doing updates, the power light was blinking and I press it and doesn't respond. The quickplay buttons wont respond either. I took the battery out to turn it completely off. Now the laptop won't turn on at all. Yes the battery light does display. I've spent a lot of money on this thing, RAM because it only had 1 GB of Ram, It needed a new Battery and High Quality Thermal Pads to keep the GPU Cooler.

I have a Satelite 1415-S173 that won't boot.
The only signs of life is the blinking power light.
The lights flash in this pattern 3-3-2 3-3-2 3-3-2

I have changed out everything memory, hard drive etc.

Answer:What does this blinking power light pattern mean?

When the notebook has a problem with power supply (board electronic), sends hexadecimal code.
In your case there are two problems:
- To know what this code means you must know exactly how to read this code. The binary code must be converted to the hexadecimal code and then you could compare the code with the description in the maintenance manual.
- Maintenance manual is not a public document.

Am I to assume that you have successfully installed Windows XP (your other post)?
What software are you installing and after how much time does it tur off?
Did you review the power settings (under screen saver) after you installed Windows?
Also, you never gave any specs on your computer (aside from the o/s) what kind of PC do you have, how old is it?

I have a problem L300 will not start, after you plug in the power cable non of the lights comes on. tried with and without battery,
Swapped the cable inside laptop that goes from the plug to motherboard with other L series laptop and makes no difference, Motherboard doesn't look burned or anything like that.

Just didn't switched on one day. Any ideas??

Answer:Satellite L300 will not power on - no light on after power plugged in

No of the available LED are on?
Hmm? for me it sounds like serious hardware issue; if you are sure that AC adaptor and battery are ok, then there must be a problem with motherboard.
Maybe power supply electronic issue? who knows? the part needs to be checked by an ASP technician in order to get more details about the fault?

So I recommend doing this if you want to fix this notebook?.

I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

Hi guys, my laptop fell like 3 feet off the bed and now won't charge or turn on. When I plug in the ac cord, the charge light rapidly blinks. It is a white color led blinking. What does this mean as the manual only has white, amber, and blinking amber options. I tried just using the battery and it does not turn on. Also tried the hard reset where you hold the power button for 30sec to 1min. Any solutions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you for the information. For the battery light blinking repeatedly, I have included the following document 'Computer Does Not Start and the LEDs Blink or the Computer Beeps'. Once you do have the link open, click on Battery power LED blinks' and follow through the steps.

The second document that I have included is 'Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP)'. Once you do have the document open, please click on the symptom that your computer is having, and follow through the steps in order.

The last document that I have included is, 'Battery Does not Power Notebook or Hold a Charge'. This will take you through the different options of testing the battery, power supply, and system board.

Please let me know if you are able to turn the notebook on after this, thank you.

The owner (I'm disabled and fix computers for people that can't afford it while I study for the a+ cert) brought it back with the same symptoms. when turned on the power on light and fan comes on then goes out and then the power on light blinks with the hard drive light blinking now and then. I tried a hard boot and I disassembled and reassembled completely, tested memory and memory slots took cpu to local repair shop and it tested clean the owner said the start up repair came up a few times right before the failure so I started with the hard drive no errors in the mbr and the hard drive works fine on different computer. any help would be great I'm trying to fix as soon as possible as owner is bed bound and her computer is her whole life

The other day I decided to turn my envy off for the first time in roughly a week. I usually just leave it on, plugged into the charger, putting it into sleep mode when im not using it. For some reason, ever since then I have not been able to turn it back on. Whenever I press the power button, The power light blinks. The pattern is a single short blink every 3-5 seconds. This continues until I take the battery out. Sometimes, if I leave it be for a day or so, I am able to get the computer to turn on, but It will not boot. I can hear the fan going, see the lights turn on as they are supposed to, however the screen remains black. I am under the impression that this either a hardware issue, or the CPU is just toast. either of which would suck. Normally I would take to a computer shop and have them look at it, but right now I'm serving in Iraq, so im SOL. And yes, I have tried everything under the sun to get it running. I have taken the battery out and left it out for an extended period, tried turning it on with and without the ac adapter plugged in, tried to perform a hard reset, and a combination of all of them.

Yesterday, I was just sitting there watching TV at my computer desk, with the computer on, next thing I know- I look over and the computer was shutdown. I didn't know why, so then I go to turn it on, it will not turn on- and the power button, that should be green, starts blinking orange. I'm not sure what the problem is, I think something might be dead. I have been getting a message that says "Alert! System Battery Voltage Low" for about 2 years, I'm not sure if that would be it or not (Maybe that died? Would that do it? I don't know).

When I try to turn it on, I can see the fan and stuff turn on for about half a second, then everything just turns off except for the mobo light and the orange blinking light. I've tested my brothers working power supply in mine, so I know that mine still works because that didn't fix it. I've taken the graphics card out, that didn't do it either. I don't know what else I could do, please help somebody, I'm lost without my computer... Thank you.

The computer has been bricked since. The only thing that is happening is the LED that indicates the power above the button will not stop flashing white. Plugged in or not plugged in, after holding down the power button for 5, 10 and 30 seconds, The power light stops flashing for a moment and then starts again. I tried multiple outlets. No clue unless it is coincidental hardware failure.

Hello everyone this is my first post here. I own a dell optiplex 745 with a core2duo 1.8 Ghz processor, 2 gb RAM and have also added an XFX HD 5550 to it. I have been using it since almost two years, and it hasn't caused me many problems except this blinking orange power light.
The problem is just this that the desktop just won't start. All that happens is that the power light just blinks orange. This has happened to it almost four times in the last two years, and the problem has seemingly resolved itself the last four times. Well it would go something like this: I would turn off the PC normally, and the next time i started it all i would get is this blinking light. Then after a couple of days or hours, I would try again and it work as if nothing had happened. But this time it happened four days ago. I turned it off, then switched it on but i got the orange light. Since then, I have tried so many times but this time I fear something much bigger has happened.
Now I have done a decent amount of work in trying to figure out whats the problem. The key thing to note is that its not my PSU (yes i used a different one). Does this mean it's my motherboard which is causing the problem? Or is it something else?
I did a bit of digging up on the internet for the same problem, and I saw one which said something about a faulty power on button
I havent tried it but I... Read more

Answer:Optiplex 745 Blinking Orange Power Light

According to the Dell manual this is either a power supply or motherboard problem.  It doesn't detail how to further troubleshoot.
Do you get any diagnostic lights? or beeps when you power it on.
But, you can remove the video card to see if the symptom changes.  If not, reseat the memory as a next step.
If neither of these help you are back to either the replacement power supply or a motherboard problem.

Answer:Computer shuts down with blinking power light

It sounds like you have a driver problem, and the blinking light suggests that the computer isn't actually shutting down, its actually going into what vista now calls 'Sleep', or standby in XP.

I had the same problem with my desktop the computer, try updating your motherboard drivers and video drivers from the relevant manufacturers websites. Give that a try and if it doesn't work then let me know and i'll give you another possible solution.

My Tecra A1 wont power on. Instead I just get a blinking amber power light.

Things I have tried:
1. Removing the AC adapeter
1a. The Pwr light still blinks : the comp wont turn on

2. Removing the AC adpter and the battery. Inserting the battery and hitting the power button
2a. When I remove the battery the blinking goes away, when the battery is replaced, the comp wont turn on

3. Removing power cord, and batttery : reattaching battery then power cord - hitting power button
3a. Right when I reattach the power cord, the power button starts blinking amber. Power button does nothing.

The light only blinks (or does anything for that mater) when the power cord is in.

In advance, thanks for the help.

Answer:Tecra A1 No power : Blinking Amber Light

Try to start your Tecra without battery just connected on power supply.

It is possible that here is some problem with battery. If the Power supply microcontroller detects an error the DC IN lamp sends a blinking code. Reading this code it is possible to know what the problem is.

If you think that battery is defect contact service partner.

hi, i have a laptop. The led green light has always been on when it is plugged in and even when it is shut down and plugged in. I heard a noise in the fan like a bug zapper noise. Then my light went out. It has not come back on. I need to see this light; it tells me I have power going into my laptop. It is charged 100%. The other lights are working. When I am working in my computer the green light is on. It goes out when I close the lid; or shut it down. My Charging Adapter Light is on and there is no problem. I just want to see my green light on my laptop. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Answer:power led light not on when plugged in

LEDs do occasionally fail.  I'd say this is connected to the noise you heard but the fact that your PC is functioning fine makes me think that's unlikely.
If you disconnect the power supply, let the battery run down some, and reconnect the power supply does the icon in the system tray show charging?  Does the battery actually charge up to 100%?
If the answer to both of those questions is, "Yes," then this is nothing worth worrying about.

We just had a poweroutage for a about 2 seconds, when power came back up, the power light on the router (linksys wrt54g ver 7) started blinking. I unplugged the router, plugged the modem in, and started surfing the net for solutions. One solution I found was on this site. I started reading a thread with a similar problem. Basically, its telling me that the firmware on my router is corrupted and I need to updated it again but by using the tftp.exe program since I can no longer enter the GUI of the router. The instructions I red said I need to assign a static ip first on my computer but it requires the DNS of my router and apparently (according to the instructions I red on the thread here with the same problem) the only way I can get the DNS is to access the GUI of my router and copy it from there. Since I'm unable to do that, I can't set up a static address, I can't use the tftp.exe program (I can't find a site where I can download it anyway); well there's nothing to start until I get that DNS number. I was wondering if I have other options left. I also tried resetting it. It didn't work.

Your notebook has hardware failure and it is sending the hexadecimal code. This code can be read by technicians and they will know what the problem is.

Perhaps this has been discussed elsewhere in the forum, but the threads were written rather inscrutably and so I'll state my problem here and hope to receive some feedback.I have a two-month old Yoga 900. Tonight it would not wake up after I put it to sleep. The power light on the side blinked, but no amount of holding it would wake the thing. Also, the machine was plugged in whilst I tried to jostle it from slumber.I googled a solution which, thankfully, worked. Which was: unplug the thing, depress the power button for 10 secs., then plug in power cord and boot again. Aha, this magic trick worked. Nonetheless I feel compelled to ask WHAT KIND OF CRUMMY PC HAVE I BOUGHT THAT GOES INTO HIBERATION LIKE THIS??? And how can I avoid it from happening again. Never had an episode like this with any Dell, Samsung or Mac. Just this jolly two month old Lenovo which I thought was a decent machine until now.Feedback appreciated.

Hi, I had a friend bring me an HP laptop recently that was not turning on or responding at all. The only thing that happens when I plug the laptop in is that the light located right next to the power port (which has a plug icon next to it) blinks a light blue / whitish color. No other lights blink, not the lightning bolt charging light, nothing. I have tried it with the battery installed, and removed.  Same behavior.I have tried the power drain (hold the power button for a minute while the batter is removed). Same behavior.I have tried multiple power adapters. Same behavior. Does this likely mean something is wrong with the motherboard itself? I can't find much information on a blinking power port light, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Adam

Hello Guys,I have HP dv6 pavilion series with Windows 10 (64 bit) for 4 years now. I dont have the Battery so I usually work with directly connecting the Power cable. It worked fine till now. Today it abruptly Shut down and since then its not booting. The Charging light keeps on Blinking.I have tried the 40/30 sec trick (holding thepower on button for 30-40 secs for the capacitors to discharge) twice, but in vain. I also cleaned up my cooling fan and checked for all the wiring, its all intact. After re-essembling the laptop, the same problem persists. And about the Bios update, I do think I have the latest bios updated, as my laptop is connected with internet, and I usually keep it all Updated. And if someone recommends me to Update the BIOS, well I cannot power on my laptop, so is there any alternative for updating the BIOS? Earlier it did Abruptly Shutdown twice or thrice over last few days, but used to Power up again. But today it wont work. Please Help Me guys. Thanks

I have a Dell Dimension 5150 desktop that is 4 years old (kids computer).  Worked last week but now cannot even power it down by holding the power button.  The power button just keeps blinking an amber light.  I have unplugged everything then plugged back in, tested all the cords.  Any thoughts?Leah

I have a problem. Moved computer to another location in my home and the power supply was blinking green and the computer would not turn on. After reading some posts online, while the power was connected to the computer, I pulled the main power plug to the motherboard. After doing this the green light was not blinking anymore and was solid green. While power was still applied to the computer, I reconnected the power plug to the mother board and the light stayed solid green. Pushed the power botton computer now started up properly, And by the way this is a Compaq Presario Media Center SR2020NX Desktop PC, what would make the computer do this? Next time i unplug from the wall plug i will be in same boat. Thanks.

Ok, bear with me here fella's, I just stumbled onto this site and decided to do the quick registration. Looks like a place I would like to come back to again....
Im not sure Im in the right section for this..
(meanwhile, back at the ranch):

My Compaq Persario sr2010nx woke me up late at nite with a noise. Now I got the green blinking lite,
clicking sounds out the spkrs and the front pwr button is seemingly disabled. I disconnected everything,
held the pwr butt in for 5 sec's, plugged directly in the wall, no change. I opened up the tower and
checked the cable connections and all seem to be tight. No change. So far, my diagnosis---most likely power supply is bad, am I correct?
Im desparately hoping my HD is ok. Im hopin one of you PC maint
expert guys/gals out there might know any more easy tricks I can try to verifly that the prob is actually the pwr supp before I go out
and purchase one them little gold-plated items. Im just an ex-cable-splicin phoneman, forced into IT Technician
for a few years before retiring. (hehe) your input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

(sub-question) Can I do these tests without connecting the keyboard and monitor up every time?

I have a Dell Latitude E5250. When plugging in the AC adapter the only light that comes on is the power button light and it's blinking continuously. The other indicator lights are off. The system board has been replaced, no change. After the system board was replaced the battery indicator light came on and the battery charged, though the laptop would not power on when the power button was pressed. It would light up then go out.  I've removed the battery and AC adapter, held down the power button to discharge flea power, no change. Followed Dell TechDirect directions to remove the battery and CMOS battery, then insert the AC adapter and power on the laptop, no change. I've tried known good RAM. I've removed all components including the LCD cable, no change. When the AC adapter is installed the power button light blinks continuously, no pattern, no other indicator lights come on. Any thoughts? I'm wondering if it's a video issue, bad Touch LCD?

I'm having strange problem with my yoga 13. One time I was using my laptop when windows suddenly came very slow. I rebooted the device and restored windows with earlier backup point. And now everything is working fine but the power indicator light is blinking all the time when windows is running. I heard this could indicate some kind of hardware problem. What does this bilnking power light mean in this case?

My refurbished dell optiplex GX280 worked fine until a month or so ago when I moved it to another room in my home. When I powered up, the power light was blinking amber. I tried all of the options that did not require buying new parts du to financial reasons, so it's sat since then.

I just decided to look at it again and powered it on. Everything seemed to start OK but no dispay. The diagnostic lights indicated faulty memory. I then located and removed the faulty DIMMM, and it started right up.

About ten minutes later the computer shut off by itself back to the blinking amber power light.

Any info would be appreciated Thank you. :grinthumb

Well, I'm guessing power supply here? When I hit the power button, no fan, nothing, just a slight "clicking" noise and the flashing yellow (some say orange) light. From what I've read it sounds like the power supply went belly up. How do I know: 1) which power supply to get to replace this one, and 2) is it worth it? I bought it second hand for $40 about 1-1/2 years ago so there is no shame in it, just not sure whether I should put any $$ in it at this point. Any thoughts? Thanks.

My laptop is almost 12 months old.  2 weeks ago the power light (on front of case) started blinking -- 1 white, 4 amber, repeated continuously -- when A/C power cord plugged in and battery has a charge.  Same if I unplug A/C power cord and run only on battery. (Bios show battery is "Normal" and icon tray shows battery is fully charged.)  Power light is constant white when I remove battery and power only with A/C cord. I called Dell Tech Support and they told me that this is not a problem with battery and that my laptop is properly functioning.  Blinking light would seem to indicate otherwise.  I would appreciate any insights that anyone might have, in particular if you have encountered this same problem.  Thank you.

Answer:Inspiron 1545 Power Light Blinking White/Amber

Hello again
Thank you so much for replying. YES, when I disconnect the battery and only run on A/C power the light stays white.
So, I will have to get a new battery which is quite expensive as I am no longer under warranty. I hardly ever use it, only to move the laptop from one room to the other. I pretty much use it like a "desktop". I have been putting up with the annoying light for a couple of weeks now, sometimes I disconnect the battery just to get rid of the annoyance, but it has been windy/stormy weather here and we are known to have occasional power outages, so I rather keep it in.
Anyways, thank you so much for posting your issue and writing back. I appreciate it

Greetings,  When I remove the AC plug from my T60, the computer immediately loses power. While plugged in, the battery light blinks yellow. If anyone could point me towards a discussion regarding these issues it would be most appreciated, as I am having difficulty finding topics relevant to these specifics.  Thank you in advance.

Hello tech guys out there!
I am having this issue with my Compaq Presario R4000. Whenever I have been using my laptop for more than 15-20 min, the ac adapter will not charge propertly. I will keep blinking on the power light as well as the start buttton light. But if I were to turn off the laptop and plug in the AC, it will charge normally again. Any idea what would be causing this issue?

I am thinking it could be motherboard issue that controls the charging but it is really wierd. Anyone had this issue before, please share with me how you resolve it? It might also be the DC port.....

Any comments or suggestion would be appreciated.

BTW, I am also looking for 2gb ram PC 2700 for my laptop. If anyone has these for sale, please email me at [email protected]

I have a Satellite P755-103. I upgraded the BIOS from version 2.6 to version 2.7 (file dated 17-09-2012. Since then, I noticed the light in the power button started to act randomly. It usually is on, sometimes it dims, sometimes it goes off, sometimes it blinks. I could not find any apparent reason for it. It also happens during the BIOS pre-boot phase, working on battery and working with the power supply on.

Any advice?

Paulo Pereira, Portugal

Answer:Satellite P755-103 power button light blinking randomly

Are you sure you are talking about power LED indicator and not HDD indicator.

The first from left is the DC indicator and it glows white when power is being correctly supplied from AC adaptor.

The 2nd from left is power indicator and it glows white when the computer is turned on.
But if you turn off the unit and goes into sleep mode, this led flashes amber.

The 3rd is battery indicator.

The 4th from left is HDD / CD/DVD drive indicator and it blinks whenever the notebook is accessing the HDD or reads from disk

I have an HP desktop. I accidentally hit the standby button on the keyboard. It started to put my computer into standby but seems to have completely powered it down. I couldn't turn it back on at all. I've tried hitting the power button and unplugging the computer. Nothing works. There is a green light near the power cord in the back blinking and that's it. I've tried unplugging all peripherals before plugging the power back in. I've also tried unplugging it and pressing the power button a few times before plugging it back in. I just can't get it to turn back on.

Answer:Lenovo U310 touch Ideapad blinking power light

Dear Support, Please provide a clear answer or solution to this problem i am also facing where after refreshing my system for Windows 10 this issue has started to happen. I diagnose that the Smart Update on my U310 has been deleted by the system along with other software as it resets the laptop. Now the Power light keeps blinking and doesn't stop till the system is shutdown. Desperately look forward to some support to resolve this issue.

My fiance's HP G62 laptop suddenly stopped booting. More specifically, when you press the power button, the power light comes on, but the screen stays totally black. I tried doing a hard reset on it (unplug, remove the battery, and hold power button down for 60 seconds), but that didn't work.  I tried this multiple times with no success. I shined a flashlight on the screen to see if there was a faint image (indicating a backlight problem), but there is no image at all. I tried connecting the computer to an external monitor, and that didn't work either.   Recently I had to replace the fan and the power button assembly on this machine, but it was working fine after that until now.
