Help! Windows 10 won't start. Error: 0xC000021A

Question: Help! Windows 10 won't start. Error: 0xC000021A

Help!

I reboot my PC last week as the computer seemed not responding and I ended up like this:

First, it was a black screen with 'autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK

Then, the blue screen appeared, revealing the error code 0xc000021a

The computer automatically restarted and directed me to the automatic repair screen. Choosing restart will cause the PC to repeat the error again.

I tried the method stated in http://appuals.com/best-fix-steps-fix-error-0xc000021a/ but it does not work.

I downloaded GTA V from steam on the day before the PC crashed and I ran it. This was the only program I download recently before the PC crash

Please Help.

Preferred Solution: Help! Windows 10 won't start. Error: 0xC000021A

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So it all started last night when i accidentally tripped on my power cord, unplugging it from tthe tower during the login screen. At first, I thought nothing of it, and I just restarted the computer. But unfortunately I was met with the BSOD with that error code. All of the online solutions I have encountered that don't involve removing all my files or using a windows 8 installation disk I have tried.
So then after the BSOD I restart and get to a screen saying automatic repair failed. I try to refresh the PC- no luck. I'm definitely not resetting my PC and losing all my files so I go into advanced options. Foolishly I have no backup USB or anything so I try a system restore. Nothing happens, same old BSOD. Then I try the various command console solutions i found in the advanced settings command prompt. All of them don't work and give me a reply saying that the image was not found or "drwtsn32.exe" was not found in the image specified or whatever. It is always prefaced with "x:\windows\system32", not C:\. I cannot start in safe mode and disabling driver signature enforcement also didn't work. Any help before i just buy a windows 8 installation disk would be greatly appreciated.

Yesterday I successfully installed Windows 10 as per Microsoft instructions only to find today an error message stating “Error 0xc000021a Terminate yes or no”. I clicked yes thinking this was the correct course of action, but unfortunately, I have not been able to connect to Windows since.
When starting my PC a message appears stating there has been a problem and will restart in a few moments. An automatic repair screen appears followed by a screen asking “Choose your keyboard layout”. This screen is frozen and I’m unable to use the mouse or touchscreen. I can proceed no further.
My PC affected is an HP Touch smart 310

I have a g75vw Asus laptop which for the most part has worked fine. Late June the computer simply wouldn't boot into windows giving the error 0xc000021a next to the " " icon. This computer was originally using windows 7 but I upgraded soon after windows 8 was released in October. For about a week before the crashing, I had been using a ubuntu 12.04 live boot jump drive for learning python. It was after a linux boot that the computer crashed but I do not think the events are related. I had also installed connectify.me, a program that turns a laptops wi-fi adapter into a router which worked well for about a week before the crash. I have gone through all of the generic hoops including safe mode(s) system recovery using a usb flash drive, refresh, and the existent yet worthless self diagnosing tool. Microsoft was unable to help without a 100 dollar fee.

Answer:Windows 8 doesn't boot. Error 0xc000021a

0xc000021a error usually means some issue with crucial system files, which could be actually caused by some bad hardware as well. I'd start with checking hard drive... Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html/page__view__findpost__p__160520Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable. For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://storage.toshiba.com/storage-services-support/warranty-support/software-utilities#diagnosticNote : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here

Asus S200E notebook, Win 8 Pro

I recently took in this laptop for my neighbor. The original idea was to scan and clean up the system. I set the laptop up in my office, ran an MSE full scan with no issues. Then ran a full Malwarebytes scan, which returned a few pups, which were removed.

After tending to other matters, I turned back to the laptop to find notification that there was a problem and windows had to restart. I ran another MWB scan only to have the system restart again. This time, the system tried to repair itself with automatic repair. No go. All reboots ended up back at the advanced startup options screen. No ability to restore the system image, no system restore. All I could get to was the cmd prompt.

Googling turned up all sorts of people with this issue (mostly older posts), but very few solutions.

This fix got my system booted again by removing pending update operations.

Apparently, an MS update is the source of the problem. To further reinforce this, until I turned off automatic updating, it would happen again. I also disconnected the machine from my network to revoke its internet access.

So the machine is no longer having start issues, but I'm not sure which update it is. I have 17 pending optional updates, but those haven't installed, so I doubt they're an issue.

I checked update history and there are 29 failed updates. All are dated within the period that the laptop has been in my possession.

As this is my first post, I did look for similar issues, but didn't find one.

I am by no means a computer expert, but have grown up around them, and have used them actively for the majority of my life, so I have a fair familiarity with them.

I recently completed my first PC build, and everything worked flawlessly. Windows 10 installed and ran fine, all my hardware was recognized without issue, and everything updated automatically upon startup. My goal was a strictly game-centric build, no overclocking or anything.

I come home today, and realize that my PC goes into the windows auto repair immediately, prompting me with an 0xc000021a error. My motherboard debug LCD was prompting me with b2 (short) 99 (short) a2 (long) my manual is very vague about it, but from what I have gleaned, it has to do with my peripherals, so I unplugged mouse and keyboard (supposedly 99 represents one or the other), no luck.

I initially tried to do a system reset, and it got to about 20% (both with and without saving personal files) and said that the process could not be completed, so I resorted to safe mode.I tried booting the computer in safe mode just to try to make some progress, and then upon rebooting to enter safe mode, it froze. I let it sit for several minutes before I manually reset the computer. Now it cycles between black screen, and MSI logo back and forth. I can enter BIOS, if I time it right. I can't get it to bring up the windows advanced options screen (to do system... Read more

Hi All..

I was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.

I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.

I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".

I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).

Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?

Thanks in advance...

Answer:Windows 8.1 - Error 0XC000021A after optional updates

try.....
STEP 1: Enter cmd
STEP 2: Now in the Command prompt just type System Root\System32\Drwtsn32.exe -I?. This process will register the Dr.Watson as the default system debugger which has to be -> Press Enter.
STEP 3: Again type System Root\System32\Drwtsn32.exe and then in the window choose the option which are Append to existing log file, Create crash dump and Visual Notification.
STEP 4: After setting it up restart the computer by pressing F8 in the startup and select Last known good configuration.
STEP 5: Once it got booted up, again restart the system in the normal and now try to look at your optional updates to make sure not to install whatever may have broken it before.

If this does not work then you may have to reinstall.

I booted my backup PC with Windows 10 Preview on it after seeing the availability of build 10041 announced. The update was there along with a lot of other invalid updates. I boot up WIN10 at at least every other day to see what's new. So I was surprised see so many of these other updates. Many of them were for Intel HD 4600 graphics and ASUS Bluetooth hardware that would be imbedded on the MB. But my Win10 PC is AMD based and has AMD Radeon 3300 on-board graphics and no on-board Bluetooth. The strange thing is that those updates that cause the error are appropriate for my other main PC which is ASUS Z97-PRO and Intel i-469K based with Intel on-board HD4600 graphics... and ASUS on-board Bluetooth. It's spooky but it is as if windows update is confusing its search with my other Windows 7 PC. In WIN10 9926 Windows Update you can't decline an update that the system finds for you.

The system suddenly does a restart and then it can't find the C: drive. I have to power off the power supply for 10 sec and restart to get back to being able to see the SATA1 drive. I had to work through three cycles of those invalid updates and on the last I got the final 21a error code... after that on the next Win10 boot the build 10041 started to install normally.

Today, I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how to recover from a problem with winlogon.exe which caused a "Windows logon process terminated" error with codes 0xc00021a and 0xc000034.

I found this article and it helped but didn't solve the problem. I thought I was faced with having to run a repair of the Windows installation, if not re-install.

That is until I decided to scan winlogon.exe using one of the online scanning services, like Jotti or Virus Total, to see if winlogon.exe had been infected. That's when I discovered the file was MISSING from \windows\system32. A Google search on a missing winlogon.exe file turned up this thread which provided the solution I needed!!!!

Many thanks to "coderitr" for your post! Copying winlogon.exe from \windows\servicepackfiles to \windows\system32 solved the problem beautifully!

Thanks!!!!!

Peace...

had one last week that was a little different and it just magically disappeared (I'm building a new computer as soon as this semester ends if this computer will last that long).

I have MOST everything backed up on an external hard drive, but when i had tried to copy the my documents folder, it kept giving me an error, and I don't remember if I copied any of it over or not. The programs are all backed up, but AFAIK any documents I had are still on there, and I'd REALLY REALLY like to make a clean sweep through the computer and get as much copied over as possible.

It's windows xp home with SP3. It started after running an AVG scan overnight and the computer went on standby during the scan. My mom tried to wake the computer up and it froze and when i rebooted it (hit the power button once and it gave me the option to shut down, restart or go to standby like it would if i had gone to the start menu and done it) it gave me a BSOD (process1_initialization_failed), and i tried again and it gave me a different BSOD (the one im posting about).

I have a recovery console.ISO on a CD that I found off of these forums and it works, but I DO NOT have the windows XP CD. It's a Dell dimension 4600 (from late 2003 hehe).

I'd rather not have to wipe the HD or buy a new one because I don't want to spend money on this computer...If I can fix it with recovery console or by getting a windows cd from someone (if i can find one) that would be ideal.

please tell... Read more

Hi, so I had a feeling that my laptop (HP gaming ak030nd) had some viruses, so I installed AVG antivirus. It told me I had to delete some stuff, so I did, and suddenly some programs connecting to the network had some problems. So I decided to reset my laptop back to factory settings, and that took around 5 hours. However, now my laptop shows me 0xc000021a error everytime I start my laptop. It's a infinite loop of "HP logo" - "0xc000021a", and I've already tried installing a microsoft windows 10 repair program on my USB and plugging it in my ak030nd, but the same thing still happens: "HP logo" - "0xc000021a".I've read that I should go into the bios to let it recognise my USB, but I can't enter the BIOS either.I've already tried escape (spam and holding in), F1-F12, INS, delete, pretty much every button on the top of my keyboard. What can I still do in order to fix my laptop?Thank you

I recently updated my PC to windows 10. It worked fine for a couple of weeks, but then it stopped booting. I started it regularly, and it showed the HP logo with the spinning circle, but then it just loaded into a flashing grey and black screen. Booting it in safe mode only got me a blue screen error, with the 0xc000021a error. I've looked pretty much everywhere, and I can't find a fix that works. Sfc scans stop at 100% verification and say "Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation." I tried "CHKDSK C: /R, but it found no errors. Any other fixes seemed to require launching windows for downloads / file access, and I can't appear to do that. Any help would be much appreciated, so thank you to anyone who replies!

I kept my computer on over night and I accidentally hit the print screen button. I have a special program called 'Greenshot' so it overlays the screen with a grid region selector and lets you drag and save. I didn't drag and save so I left it like that over night.

As soon as I woke the computer up it froze the entire screen nothing could be down. Also a message pop up about failed nvidia drivers. I decided to just force reset my computer since their was nothing I could do.

Boot it up and got all the way to the logo and loading screen. A few seconds after I BSOD with the error 0xc000021a.

Reset the computer and the auto repair screen came up. I won't let me reinstall windows w/ keeping personal files, safe mode doesn't help nor does the force drivers option, I have no idea if windows have "Boot from last known boot" or have it verity all system64 files like windows 7. Nothing work in the repair menu but the command prompt which is label X Drive instead of C drive by default.

I heard windows 10 likes to secretly update bios so I don't know it that could be the problem. Anyways I have had boot loops in the past where if I plug too many usb devices in the back IO panel the computer will just boot loop.

I have installed Windows 8 Pro on my PC and on my Laptop. The problem is since yesterday the laptop ist showing the error 0XC000021A. It only writes that my PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. After a restart it just writes the system must be recovered and if I click on "Recover" it only shows the Win8 logo and nothing happens. I tried it several times and always get the same error.
The biggest Problem is I cant access the BIOS and change the boot device, so its not so easy to reinstall Windows. I always have to open the device and to format the hard disk on an other PC.
Is there any way to solve this problem without reinstalling Windows? I cant access the PC so all the other ways written in the internet don't work in my case.
Here you can see a photo of the error: http://tinyurl.com/cx5n48f
Please help me!

Answer:Bluescreen error 0xC000021A

Why can't you access the BIOS? I suspect a hardware problem because of this statement.
If you can get into Windows, Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis: https://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...tructions.html

If you can't get into Windows, please start with these free, bootable diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics

Hello ,
I have a Surface RT with Windows 8. I have the dreaded "blue screen of death" with a 0xc000021a error. I understand Microsoft no longer provides support for the Surface RT. In the simplest terms possible (because I am a computer neophyte) how can
I fix this? If this error was caused due to a MicroSoft update, do I really have to pay MicroSoft support to walk me thru the steps to undo their mess?

By "dead" I mean it is not doing anything.
Hi. I started my Samsung laptop today to find the entitled error. No "help" I have come across has worked, especially on microbrain's website. It says it is collecting some "error info" and has not moved from 0% since it started nearly 25 minutes ago. As soon as I saw it I knew it was a fake non-error, not doing anything, and certainly not fixing anything.
Pressing F8 is ignored by this wonderful piece of nothing, and I can't make the drive work via a USB dock using another windose OS on another drive, either.
How can I fix it?
Thanks.

Answer:'0xc000021a' dead error

I'm on mobile so I can't see the edit button.
I don't have this installation disc and I can't make a boot USB disk, either, because I can't get into it st all. It keeps on either going to the Samsung splash screen with the rotating icon then not doing anything, yo the error/error info-"collecting" screen immediately where it reboots immediately and alleges to try again, or it mentions it is "preparing automatic repair", which I don't know why it's called that because it does NOTHING automatically/by default, and does NOT repair ANYTHING.

Thankfully I have a secondary laptop to report my issues on.
My problem is located on my Vizio all in One PC. Model is CA 27.  I am running windows 8.  Installed from windows store.
Using microsoft security essentials.  I do not have any other antivirus program or software installed.

I received notification that updates were available and ready for installation (I have the computer notifying me when windows updates are available for installation) - all other program updates are a notification only, I believe.

So, I hit the install updates and restart pc. Once the pc initiated the restart phase, the black screen with windows logo appears, with the spinning circle.  It then shoots to a blue screen with the following message:  Your PC ran into a problem restarting.  We are collecting information for you (then the percentage bar of information collection).  Below this notification is the following BSOD errorr number:  0xc000021a.
It then loops to Preparing Automatic Repair, Diagnosing your PC, then sends me to Blue Screen of Automatic Repair:  Your PC did not start correctly.  Press restart to restart your PC, which can somtimes fix the problem.  You can also press advnaced option to try othe roptions to repair your PC.

I hit restart and it loops back again (reread my beginning post).
I hit advanced options, I have continue, troubleshoot and turn off PC.

Alright so here I go... I get home from work and boot my PC, only to find it wasn't responding to anything and the clock dissappeared from the welcome screen. So, as most other people would, I hard reset it as it would not respond to the power button.

However, I seem to have created a problem for myself... I'm now stuck in a bootloop in which the PC refuses to fix itself. I start it... I get error 0xc000021a in a bsod and it reboots to try and repair, in which that fails. I have tried a 2 separate system restores, both 28th and 23rd of January, to no avail.

Sorry that I cannot create any dump of any kind, as I can't even access any part of my PC.

I've tried other methods such as the DISM command, only to get some error stating that I'm supposed to use an /online command. Eh?
I've tried booting into safe mode, only to get the exact same error.
I cannot refresh or reboot as I do not have access to a disk or flash drive at this point (my kid sister snapped my disc in a fit of rage, irrelevant but worth noting.)

I can't even chkdsk because it says something about the HDD being locked?

For future reference, this is a custom built PC so there's no telling what I did.

My system specs are as follows:
Gigabyte GA-H81M-HD3 mobo
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
8gb DDR3 ADATA Ram.
Core-i5 4460 @3.2gh.
Sapphire HD 5850 1gb

I've got 4 fans cooling the system so I doubt anything is fried?

Hi,
I have been struggling with error 0xc000021a for a while now and can not find a way to fix the issue. I tried using sfc /scannow, but all I get is a message saying:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix someof them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Forexample C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently notsupported in offline servicing scenarios.

the sfcdetails is attached.

I also tried using dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth , but get Error: 3017 when at around 75% during the process.

dism log file is attached as well

I tried resetting my laptop, but get Error: There was a problem resetting your pc

The only way I have found to get past error 0xc000021a is to disable driver signature enforcement, but this is only a temporary solution. Every time I restart or reboot my pc it will give me the error which is really annoying. I have went through the repair my computer scans many times and every time it will say that it couldn't repair the pc. The hardware scans never find any issues as well.

Ok, I clicked 'update and restart' while turning off my Surface RT, and instead of booting my OS, Windows collecte 'some error information' and restarted to a BitLocker error screen asking me for my recovery key. So, I went on the microsoft website with my phone and found the recovery key, typed it in and tapped 'Continue', but it eventually says 'Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC'. I tap 'Advanced options' and then 'Continue:Exit and continue to Windows RT'', but I just end up at the original BitLocker error screen. If I go to 'Troubleshoot' and try 'Refresh your PC', it says 'the drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again. I tap 'Cancel' (the only option) and try 'Advanced options' then 'Automatic Repair', I get the same error screen as before, so I tap 'Startup Settings' and then 'Restart'. Eventually, I get a BitLocker screen that says ''you must enter your recovery key to access Startup Settings: to protect the privacy of your data, BitLocker has prevented the unlocking of your drive. You'll need to enter the recovery key.' Then there's nothing but some text at the bottom telling me to 'press enter or the windows key'. The problem here is that when I press enter or the Windows key, nothing happens. It just stays on that screen for a minute or so, and then ... Read more

Using Windows 8.1 digital purchase, no CD.

This classic error just started happening yesterday. Had no problem with the pc in the morning, came home late and when I tried to turn it on it didnt got pass the error screen. All I remeber doing in the morning is an adobe flash update which I did not install, just dowloaded to install later. Then nothing else, I was using firefox and did nothing else.

Tried almost everything to solve it.
Every cmd command that is around.
Sfc scannow
Bcdedit into safe mode, with and without cmd, and bootmenu policy.

Pc just wont start in safe mode either.

Tried to restore to previous version, an error comes up saying it was not possible. Tried all three of the available dates.

Tried pressing F8 and starting safe mode from there and still no result.

None of the "repair" options work of course.

I can acsess the BIOS, on the gygabyte screen. Not sure what to chabge in there. Anyways, tried with "fast boot" and same error occurs.

The copy is a digital purchase, so no CD.

Any ideas? Appreciate it

Answer:Error 0xc000021A PC wont boot

Do you have any dump files under C:\Windows\Minidump ? If so, please copy them from that directory and upload them here. You should be able to copy them via command line if that's all you can access (if you're not sure how to do this, let me know and I can help) - either that, or you can burn a Linux LiveCD (such as Ubuntu or Mint), boot off of it, and use a GUI environment to copy them to an external storage device.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...=vs.85%29.aspx
Try Last Known Good Config boot option.

When you ran SFC, did it find anything? Usually it will only repair stuff if you have a disc in the drive for it to reference.

Have you tried running a disk check? At the command prompt:
chkdsk c: /f /r

Hello all, Im new here an need some help. I am trying to fix a friends Dell Dimension 8300. It was filled with tons of viruses. I got most of them, but after a restart I keep getting the BSOD error 0xC000021A followed by Cx0000034. I can't boot into any of the options when I press F8. I still get the message regardless. His CD drive doesn't work, so I cant boot from a disk. I removed the HD and put it in an enclosure and hooked it up to my computer to try and diagnose the problem from my computer. Is there anyone that can help me Can I replace files on his HD from my Windows XP Home Edition SP2 that will make it work again?? (He is running XP home SP2). I have not added any hardware or Ram. Just Windows live onecare to remove the viruses. Thanks in advance for whoever replies!

And yes, I have search all the knowledge bases and this forum and nothing has worked so far.

Answer:BSOD 0xC000021A Fatal Error

For anyone who has or will have the same problem. Here is what I did.

I opened up the tower for the Dell 8300 and took out the HD and the CD drive. (the CD drive didnt have the right drivers and can't find them, but it ran).

I plugged the IDE cable (master) into the CD drive and power cable.

Then I plugged the Slave end of the IDE cable into the HD.

Under settings (F2) I changed all the settings to "Auto" under the drive configuration settings. And changed the boot order to boot from the CD drive.

Then I inserted the Win XP CD into the drive, and rebooted.

Then I pressed "R" after the Win XP CD loaded all the files. The "R" is the repair Win XP installation. Everything loaded onto the HD without any data loss! The computer finally boots up now. Now I just have to put it back together LOL.

I have a bootable USB with Windows 10, and another hard-drive plugged in running Windows 7. I have used the W7 boot to save my personal files which is lucky.

What I have tried:
- Boot to safe mode, disable driver signature
- Bootable USB -> "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=g:\windows" returns "Microsoft Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"
- Registry replaced with backups

The SSD seems 'healthy'. Screenshot. CHKDSK passed but "failed to transfer log messages status 50". Are there logs I can locate manually on the troublesome drive and upload?

Any help would be appreciated, let me know if I can provide more information.

How much free space does each partition have? Not enough can cause quite some issues, at least 10-15% free space is recommended.

Hi

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and it was working fine for a few days but now I get BSOD with error code 0xc000021a everytime I boot it. I've tried the following 'fixes':

System restore --- Runs for a few minutes and then says "Could not restore your computer. No changes were made"

Clicking on any of the advanced startup options --- BSOD

Reinstalling windows 10 with a usb --- Results in it going into circles with this message "The computer started using the Windows installation media. Remove the installation medial and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade. [Do not select iCustom [advanced]I to perform an upgrade. iCustom [advanced]I installs a new copy of Windows and deletes your programs and settings.)"

I've taken the usb out and restarted the computer several times, even called Microsoft Technical Support. They had no idea what to do.

I used to be able to access the command prompt and I tried everything suggested in this article here https://neosmart.net/wiki/0xc000021a/. The reason I say "used to" is because things recently got alot worse when I changed the boot order and now it just turns black after the bios screen. I've tried to restore to default and I also tried everything suggested in this article 3 Ways to Reset Your BIOS - wikiHow

Nothing works. Please help.

Hello again!

I'm fixing a computer for a friend of mine. The computer at issue is running Windows XP, and suffers from the apparently not-so-uncommon STOP: 0XC000021a error with WINLOGON.exe. The computer was infected with a virus that caused the problem, NOT a hardware or new software installation.

I've spent hours researching a solution to the problem with no avail. Most guides reccommend reverting to the "Last Known Good Configuration". I tried this first, and it didn't work. He also has no Windows restore points to use.

The second common solution is to use a Windows XP CD to do a repair installation. As luck would have it, he doesn't have his Windows XP CD. I don't have one, either, since I've been using Vista for a while.

I've definitely isolated the problem to WINLOGON.exe, using DrWatson. I CAN boot the computer into Safe Mode, but I cannot boot it normally. The restart and BSOD occur roughly 1-2 minutes after the XP login screen appears.

Any tips or ideas?

Answer:Virus caused STOP: 0XC000021a error in XP

I'd also like to note that I've used AVG anti-virus and Spybot on the computer in Safe Mode, as well as Malware Bytes. I believe that the initial virus is gone, but I can't be sure until the problem is fully resolved.

I bought my yoga 2 13 in November 2014. It has worked well till last week. Now it freezes for 10-20 seconds on the simplest click to another window. I got an error xode 0xc00021a. Hi rajeshprasad1 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Error 0xc000021a  may be a system file error on base check but may also hide underlying issue  like bad sectors or drive. On other scenarios , this error can cause system not to boot to Windows .

Best that you take time to back up everything that is important or if that would be hard, try to get data recovery tech / center to slave the harddrive for the back up if possible and have then run a harddrive diagnostics at the same time.

Would it work ok on safe mode?
Would you be able to run individual Storage test using this link .

Update us how it goes .

I threw the dump into the debugger, and it tells me, "Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly." This is bad for you because it means your dump doesn't have enough information to explain RPC's crash. Given the age and popularity of Win8, I'd suspect some third party driver / service is mucking things up. It could be the copy protection (SafeDisc) some game installed.Try updating drivers (your sound driver was released a year before your OS) and / or uninstalling customized drivers (the Razer stuff). How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Hi everyone,

My friend just began getting a fatal system error when he tries turning his computer on. It loads up all and displays the background, and then crashes. The error is a blue screen:

STOP: C0000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process System process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

I've been unable to find anything to correct this problem. It can boot up into safe mode but not safe mode with networking capabilities (it then does the same thing). Anyone know of any solutions? Thanks!

Hello all,

I was asked to disinfect a friend's computer that was absolutely infested with virii, malware, spyware, and the like. I began by installing and running AVGh antivirus. After running a full scan, I was asked how I wanted to proceed regarding a particular infected file (unfortunately I did not write down the filename) and I choose either delete/qyuantine. Immediately
following, I was greeted with a blue screen that read 0xC000021A error. Since then, I have tried every possible way to boot: Safe Mode, Last previous configuration, etc. I also tried booting from the Dell utility partitiion and all those tests Passed (even the OS/Boot up test- go figure). Because all of these boots were unsuccessful, I decided the only way to fix this would be a fresh format. Well I can't even do that! I choose boot from CD and still get the blue screen with the same error! How in the world can I fix this if I can't even format and reinstall the OS? Any ideas?

I have googled endlessly and failed to come up with a solution. I read Microsoft's documentation but there is no way for me to follow the steps since I cannot access any kind of prompt.

Thanks so much in advance.

Where do I even start?
A client of mine came to me with their HP desktop and were saying it could not boot and restore points were not even working. I thought I would have this worked out in no time. I was wrong.

Here is the details for everything:
- Error code is 0X000021a and I can only see it when I, attempt to, boot into Safe Mode (Which all Safe Mode options do not work.)
- Normal booting into the OS results in a mainly blue screen with thin lines and streaks cutting through the screen and nothing is distinguishable.
- I tried System Restore and there is nothing there to access, says Windows.
In this next section, I run commands from the Command Prompt in the Windows Troubleshooting section of the boot.
- SFC scans result in this now: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."
- Chkdsk: Regular Read-Only mode tells me "No further Action is required" and running the extended commands, such as /f /r, takes a huge amount of time and I only did that once. No dice.
- DISM commands seem like such a good idea but I can run only one of them and it does not help me in any way. Say I run "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth" it gives me "Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool. Version 10.0.14393.0.
Error: 50. DISM does not support servicing Windows PE with the /Online option."
And if I try any other DISM commands, more errors, like Error 2.
- System Repair does not work.

Hey all, long-time lurker here. I wanted to start off by saying thank you, as I've found the info posted here (regarding other misc. problems I've had) to be very helpful

I'll start off with my specs:
Laptop: MSI GX640
CPU: Intel Core i5-430M
Memory: DDR3 2 GBx2
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5850 w/ 1 GB DDR5 VRAM

I don't know if any other information is necessary for this particular problem, but if there's any relevant info that I missed please do let me know.

Anyway, right now I have a problem with the above mentioned error. It first started while playing XCOM, and it pretty much happened every XCOM session thereafter, so I tried looking for some ways to DIY troubleshoot it. To that end, I've tried sfc, disk check, virus and malware scans, and also updating my drivers. All the scans didn't find anything unusual, and currently I'm pretty sure my drivers are up-to-date.

I want to add a couple of things here, just in the interest of providing as much info as possible, though I'm not sure if it will be pertinent. Anyway, for updating my drivers I used a third-party program called SlimDrivers, and I think it worked properly. I realize driver update software can be sketchy, but it had good reviews on cnet, which I suppose was as reputable a review source as I could find. But moving on, I goofed when updating my video card drivers, as I downloaded a version that, it turned out, was incompatible for my laptop. This became apparent when the top of my screen started flic... Read more

Hi, i built my PC back in august and have had no issues, until now.
I got a windows update notification

-updates
"Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems"
"Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3106932)"

as always i reset my PC when there's a windows update and when i do it cannot access the boot drive, so i proceed to go into the command prompt and input the "DISM /image:c:\ / cleanup-image /revertpendingactions" which puts me into the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

i move the pending.xml and pending.old
(via the "move C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.old" command) the folders and it works until i restart my PC and it brings me back to the inaccessible boot drive window and i have to move the folders again.... is there a permanent fix for this? it's really annoying and i'm totally lost

Greetings all,

I love your forums and been searching them for the last several hours. I've seen some great advice, however I haven't done anything due to the fact that all the situations seem different.

Here goes.

I booted up my comp this am and was greeted by the beloved BSOD... Windows Stop: 0xc000021a(0xc0000034) Error.

I cannot log on in Normal, SafeMode, Last Known good Configuration

I have an SP2 XP Pro Disc. I have access to the recovery console. I have done chkdsk. Alot of the posts have mentioned things like FIXBOOT or verifying I have certain files and etc. Anyone able to give me a hand getting this thing back up and running. One other piece of possibly relevant information. I ran a malware bytes scan on the comp. It found 1 error. I didn't pay attention to it, fixed it. Restarted and everything was good. 24 hours later, the BSOD came up.
Thanks

Already tried swapping the disk in a very simular machine (same model, different bios) but the problem follows the disk.

Anyone who can help me or point me in the right direction?

Hi I've been experiencing BSODs for the past week and was using Windows 8. As many system files was corrupted I thought it was causing by my faulty hard drive. So, I freshly installed Windows 8.1 Pro x64 on my PC. Then, I installed all required drivers, Avast! Free Antivirus, Comodo Firewall and some softwares. Now again I am getting occasional BSODs. Even sometimes when my computer becomes active from idle mode it automatically restarts and after reboot it shows information about last BSOD.

I checked minidumps with nirsoft's BlueScreenView and got that those BSODs are caused by the same ntoskrnl.exe error 0xc000021a. I am no expert when tackling BSODs. I would greatly appreciate any help offered on this matter.

Hi, today - after installing a firmware upgrade for windows10 on my surface 2 and a first successful reboot - I checked again for updates and found a new one that failed to install (didn't write down the error code, there was no specific explanation).
After a second shutdown I've got a 0xc00021a on reboot.
I don't have a backup or a restore point. I then followed the suggested steps to troubleshoot this error. I tried the "verify.exe" utility for drivers, which did not help.
I tried the Windows Settings "Troubleshoot" options: "Reboot" and "Safe mode with network", then I tried to "Disable driver signature enforcement" with no luck (same error).
Then I tried to reset the system from a Windows 10 USB installation, with the option "keep my files", but, surprisingly, I got the same error again and the process rolled back.
I really appreciate any help to solve this problem!

Greetings,

I receive a BSOD everytime I restart windows 8.1 or whenever windows restarts automatically to install updates (although it finishes updating successfully on reboot) with error code 0xc000021a. Besides that, the PC works normally. A few days ago the problem was reversed, i.e. Windows crashed on shut down with the same error but not on restart, this happened after I uncheched the Turn on fast startup option in power options which apparently solved similar problems for other people. I had to perform a Windows Refresh, keeping both files and installed apps intact, to reverse the PC in the previous condition so now it crashes again on restart but afterwards boots normally, though with some delay. I tracked the problem to Winlogon process terminating unexpectedly but I don't know how to fix the problem since a reinstallation of Windows didn't solve it. I suspect that a third party program is causing the problem and since I kept all of them after the refresh it still causes problems. Since I am not an expert however I could be totally wrong. The last incident happened today (18/02/2014) on restart due to a windows update. I would greatly appreciate any help offered on this matter.

Thank you

My computer lost power yesterday and is now stuck in a BSOD loop.

It gives me error 0xc000021a, restarts, fails automatic repair, then BSODs again.

Methods I've tried

chkdsk /f /r
sfc /scannow
system restore

Safe Mode does not launch and goes rigth back to the BSOD

Reset This PC also does not work, as it says it ran into a problem.

Because I can't even log in, I can't download Sysnative BSOD Dump + System File Collection App.

I am upgrading some machines, most go without a hitch but some have a mysterious BSOD.

I attached the dumps of a Windows 8 machine, i use MDT to upgrade to Windows 10 v1607 + do windows updates. BSOD happens after the first real boot (which means upgrade + updates have been done)

Already tried swapping the disk in a very simular machine (same model, different bios) but the problem follows the disk.

Anyone who can help me or point me in the right direction?

I have a Windows 2000 Advanced Server system that is crashing on boot with a STOP 0xc000021a (abnormal winlogon or csrss exit) with exit status 0x00000080. It is on an Integrated xSeries Server in an iSeries 270, but I'm pretty sure that this is a Windows problem, not one with the host AS/400 system, because I was able to install a Windows system in a new image, and use it to look at the contents of the original image (AS/400 PC compatibility cards allow you to switch between multiple PC OS images). I checked the system logs for the original Windows system, and there were no messages relating to the crash. Dr. Watson was set as the debugger in the registry, but it doesn't appear to be saving a log or memory dump. No msgina replacement is installed. I bought the system used, and it was crashing like this when I got it, so I am not sure what change triggered this crash. How do I find out what is causing this crash so I can fix it?

Answer:Windows 2000 Advanced Server STOP 0xc000021a

You problem c000021a error is from winlogon.exe crashing. If none of these work, you might have to reinstall windows and use backups to restore the files.I1.) Download the UBCD 4 Windows and if you have access to another server with the same OS, copy the file winlogon.exe to a flash drive, the file is located under C:\WINNT\System32\winlogon.exe. Boot to the UBCD, It will ask you what you want to boot to, use your arrow keys on your keyboard to highlight Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows, press enter, and it will load a windows XP interface. If it asks you any questions about starting drivers, network is unneeded, and is it askes you about USB, press yes. You will need to insert the flash drive, and, go to my computer. Locate the flash drive, and, copy the winlogon.exe from the flash drive to C:\WINNT\System32. It may ask you if you want to replace an existing file, press yes. Now, restart the server and boot from the hard drive. If this fixes your problem, your are in luck, if not, follow these instructions. 2.) If you use a backup program that makes a bootable disk for recovering data, and you backed up the entire hard drive, try to use that. If your winlogon.exe file was deleted, this could recover it. 3.) If you use the backup program that comes with windows, and, you backed up the entire hard drive, you can repair windows be booting to your Windows 2000 server disk, when the screen comes up with the options, about 5 minutes after booting from the disk, hit "R" on your keyboard f... My win 10 computer has just started giving me the above error code.
I can log in using mouse & keyboard, but when I get to the start screen I get the above error code 0XC000021a.

I have tried several times to do a fix, like shutting off the power supply, rebooting, waiting etc.

Any solutions out there?

I am sending this Email on my Win 8.1 desk top.

Tried booting 3 times with same result. Dual booting 10TP with 8.1 Pro. 10TP boots, I log in fine, and about 20 seconds in it states that MS Mouse & Keyboard Center has failed. It writes a report to send. Then about 10/15 seconds later I get a blue reboot/collecting data screen with a "STOP 0xC000021A" error. So I look that up: ttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/156669

That states some causes.

?Mismatched system files have been installed.
?A Service Pack installation has failed.
?A backup program that is used to restore a hard disk did not correctly restore files that may have been in use.
?An incompatible third-party program has been installed.

I do have an MS Arc mouse. This all runs fine in 8.1. I?m thinking OK, MS Mouse & Keyboard Center had installed via Windows Update automatically and perhaps it didn't load correctly or it?s incompatible. I look to see that it?s not working in JDobbsy1987 thread of working/not working apps. Sure enough it's there, although that thread hasn?t been updated lately. Windows 10 Preview Tested Apps Trouble is that I don?t know when it installed. Usually I get a settings screen after it installs, but I just don?t remember that.

Anywho, I know I won?t have time to go in and uninstall or any other task. Also keeping in mind the other potential causes and suggestions/remedies. So I go back to 8.1 and make a 10TP Safe Mode. Boot into it with a warning off the bat that states "explorer.exe warning. Unknown hard error&q... Read more

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with an issue I'm having in Vista.

I was trying to navigate to a webpage in Chrome, and then webpages started to refuse to load past a certain point (e.g. the tab would show the page's title, but the tab itself would be entirely blank). When this happened my computer started to freeze for periods of time, after which it would do whatever I had told it to (e.g. I clicked the "x" to close Chrome, which it did after several minutes) for about a second then freeze again.

I decided to restart the PC by holding down the power button. When I turned the PC back on I got the screen saying that one or more of my disks needed to be checked for errors, but I told it to skip the disk check (bad idea, I know, but I was in a terrible mood at the time and wasn't thinking too straight). The computer then froze on that screen, so I restarted it again.

After restarting it the startup repair program ran, as Windows would not start, and took a while checking for errors before asking whether I want to run system restore, which I do. After running system restore it gives me an error message saying:

"The instruction at 0x737e989e referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read."

I then click on "OK" and the computer goes to a screen with six recovery tools on it (Startup Repair, System Restore, Windows Complete PC Restore, Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, Command Prompt and Recovery M... Read more

Hello everyone,
I recently had a virus on my Windows xp computer (one of those ones that pretends to be an anti-virus program telling you your computer is infected). Before I had the chance to remove it I found I was unable to start up my computer. Instead of the usual user login screen I had a black screen with this message:

"lsass.exe - Application Error". The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on ok to terminate the application

Once I click okay nothing happens, the screen just remains blank. I have tried going into safe mode (F8 key) but it doesn?t seem to work. I hold the button down but the computer just loads up like normal and goes onto the dreaded black screen.

I have done some quick research and found that the problem is either the OS is broken, or a virus is pretending the OS is broken. Either way I have no idea what to do.

Any help is much appreciated. Please note however I am pretty clueless when it comes to computers, thus please try to assume as little prior knowledge as is reasonably possible and include simple step by step instructions if you can. I apologise for my ignorance.

If you need any further information let me know. Note as I have no laptop currently I will have to wait until I am in work to respond.

Thanks in advance!

Hello there!

I'm currently running Vista on my Compaq laptop. Unfortunately (long story) my key for Avast Antivirus expired in January 09 and I was unable to input the key code until September 09, so I guess the virus found it's way onto my computer during that time.
I ran a scan after finaly inputting the key and Avast found several infected items. Some could be removed, but since that scan I've been getting the following message after starting-up the laptop:-

Error loading C:/Windows/TEMP/msxm192z.dll

Also, since the initial scan and appearance of this error message I've been having various problems -
* Laptop running slow
* Media player not running (won't open/run) - cannot play any music!
* Photo Gallery icon blank and won't open - cannot access my photos!

I've since uninstalled Avast and installed a free version of AVG. Neither seem to be able to get rid of this virus.

I also followed the advice given to another member of this forum. I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
This is the MBAM report from the scan (which picked up several infected items):-

Mod Edit: Moved from Win8 to the Am I Infected forum ~~boopmeI randomly decided to look at McAfee and check my settings, etc.  When looking at the main screen, everything states its on and green.  I had the most current definitions loaded.  When I checked my McAfee firewall it stated on.  When I clicked to go into the McAfee firewall, the screen then changed and said it was off.  When clicking the Turn On button, it would immediately shut off.  I searched this issue and the blogs stated to look at the Windows Firewall under Services.  When I checked, it was not there.  I did a Windows Search for it and found it.  When it opens it gives tells me I need to Update the Firewall Settings.  When I click on Use Recommended Settings it gives me an error "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.  Error Code 0x8007042c." I've checked out some of the blog discussions and followed a few thread about creating new register.bat files and running them.  I've also tried merging some .dll files also per the bloggers.  After doing these actions, the Windows Firewall now appears in my Services but when I click to start it I get the error "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall Service on Local Computer.  Error 1068:  The dependency service or group failed to start"

Answer:Can not start Windows Firewall - Error Code 0x8007042c and Error 1068

My OS is Win7 Pro 32bit with SP1 and all updates installed.
Whenever I try to open Windows Live Photo Gallery I am told: Windows Live Photo Gallery encountered an error and cannot start. Error code 0x80070002.
I have the latest version of WLPG.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program and the repair option, and a Microsoft Fixit which says it succeeded, but the problem persists.
The strange thing is that if I open My Pictures then open a folder and select a picture it opens in WLPG,but if I then click on Edit the program crashes.
If anyone can tell me how to fix this problem I would be grateful.
Thanks and regards,Roy

Hi, I recently my anti-virus automatically scanned a virus and deleted it. 5 minutes after my computer deleted that virus, my computer froze. So I had to restart it. When I got to the desktop after the restart, an error message popped up saying:"C:\windows\system32\warihagi.dllThis specific module can not be found."After selecting OK, my computer then freezes for about a minute or two trying to load up. Now that leads to my internet not working. I'm connected directly, but I am not receiving any signal. When I go to repair it, I get "Failed to Query TCP/IP settings of the connection." It is like the computer does not recognize the driver anymore.I ran my anti virus numerous times and found nothing. I've reinstalled windows xp and still experiencing the same problem. I have no idea what to do. Any help?
