Ideapad z500 touch How to open up?

Question: Ideapad z500 touch How to open up?

Hi. Im wanting to get into my laptop (it is pretty broken and I just want to see wires are connected etc)... but I cant work out how to open it up!Ive unscrewed all the screws, gently tried to force gaps in parts, used a screw driver to try and prize up the keys in the keyboard etc, I just cant work it out!Can someone please advise me what to do? The laptop is out of warrenty, paid to have it repaired and they just gave me a £500 bill to which I laughed. I have a spare macbook running windows, so this more than willing to 'experiment' with this one. Thanks for any help

Preferred Solution: Ideapad z500 touch How to open up?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This started happening yesterday with my laptop. When I plug in the AC adaptor, it provides power to my laptop but doesn't charge it. My laptop battery is at 0% so whenever I unplug the adaptor, it dies instantly. Anyone know if this is a dead battery or another issue?

Hello all. My Laptop's screen is currently heavily cracked due to my own clumsiness though I've noticed that it is just the glass digitizer over the LCD. My issue is that I can't seem to find a straight up replacement part to swap over the old cracked glass. Any help finding one would brilliant. Failing that I've found the digitizer for a U350 which looks like it has identical dimensions; would it be possible to use this instead? Laptop is IdeaPad Z500 Touch as stated in the subject. Kind regards to all.

Looking for a fix to this screen flickering issue on my Lenovo Ideapad Z500 Touch Screen Notebook. I took it to the Service Center and the technicians there changed the LCD cable that connects the screen with the motherboard. Still, The problem persists. The engineers over there do not seem to have a clue whether this problem is Hardware or Software and I don't wish to unnecessary get my machine disassembled again. This flicker does not happen continuously though. My notebook works fine if i keep it unmoved on the desk. But the moment i try to adjust the lid or move my notebook around, the flickering starts. To stop it, I simply put my machine on sleep mode or close the lid for 5 odd minutes. Upon wake up, The Screen again appears to work fine minus any flicker. Would appreciate any help in this regard. I have also captured a Video of the problem. Please Refer: http://youtu.be/kp12dYt6OWE

Answer:Lenovo Ideapad Z500 Touch Screen Flickering!

I am having the same problem.  The screen, it seems to be the touch screen like someone is touching it, Also, magnifies in and out.  If I move the laptop, or the screen that can cause it to start.  Or it just starts by its self, if I leave it on, when I come back it flickering.  I have to close it down and start all over again.I took it to a shop, they tried a few things but couldn't fix it, some suggestions: they thought it might be something to do with the graphics?? Maybe!   If anybody has this problem and sloved it, be really good to hear from you.

When I was playing Mass Effect 2 the game would suddenly freeze but the sound would keep going, though it would sound like a horn being blown down industrial fans and every so often would revert back to normal. If I had earphones in it would keep swiching to speakers instead. If I didn't Ctrl+Alt+Delete to task manager the laptop would sometimes blue screen or if I didn't end the task it could also blue screen. I thought the laptop needed to be refreshed so I did so, reinstalled all drivers and the game but it was still happening. I even found that when I went onto the nvidia control panel and looked at the spinning preview image, after a few seconds the system would freeze until getting the message about the driver not responding and successfully recovering. I've tried 3 drivers (The original that shipped with the laptop, the latest lenovo released driver and nvidia's latest driver) but they all had the same problem. For now I have just completely removed the nvidia drivers and haven't had any more problems. I would like to get the graphics card working again and was hoping someone might know a soloution. The Graphics Card is the Nvidia GeForce GT 740M. The most common blue screen I was getting when I wasn't gaming was the driver_power_state_failiure one and when I was I think it was the dpc_watchdog_violation one.

Answer:Ideapad Z500 Touch downgrade from win10 to win8 or 7

"...I was looking option to downgrade through Onekey Rescue System, But I am confuse here as I don't have OS back up in cd/dvd or anything. Can i do without it?" Comment: A copy of the Win 8 including all programs from the factory is place in a hidden partition of the hdd. You need OneKey Recovery program to access it and be able to restore the unit to factory consition. "...if I make copy of OS now, which OS will be backup Win8 or Win10 (current using)?" Comment: First of all how will you do the copy? If it is in Win 10 then you will have a Win 10 backup. That is after the upgrade to Win 10 you will not be able to make a backup through OKR but in Win 10 only.

Hi,When I power on/restart my laptop, on login screen the passowrd box automatically get filled by weird characters.I am able to login using my password after clearing the password box, but this is an annoying problem. This problem was there when I bought this laptop, but I ignored at that time. Once my system is up and running, I dont have this weird character problem in any of the application, so I am very much sure that none of the keys are in pressed state in my keyboard. Using "Eye Symbol" in the password box I am able able to see these weird characters, these are "+" characters. But why on startup the password box gets filled by this character automatically? is there any solution to this problem?

Hi, Basically, my girlfriend's laptop has been acting up for a couple of months now. Every other week, it will just crap out and refuse to start up past the POST screen. When this first happened, I googled to see how I could get her back in and created a recovery disk using the tools provided in Windows 8. Using this, she managed to recover some key files before having to reset the PC (deleting everything but the Windows files). Since then, this problem has persisted despite several attempts to prevent it (using less of the hard disk, turning it off regularly and so on), and we were told at a laptop repair shop that it was most likely the hard disk. Upon hearing this, I ordered her a new Samsung hard drive (2.5 inch, 1tb, 5400rpm) to replace her existing one which seems to be dying/dead. I have two main questions, which are: Was the laptop repair guy correct in his assumption that it was the hard disk which was the issue? If we replace the old hard drive with the new one, can we retain the copy of windows and the various lenovo drivers and utilities it includes? Thanks for your help, A8

I have a z500 (non-touch) that recently had its screen broken. I plan to purchase the LCD part and replace it myself. I was wondering if I could purchase the part(s) for the z500 touch and give myself touchscreen capabilities as well.Is such a solution possible? If so, what  parts might I need to purchase to make such a solution work? Thanks,  -Ben C.

Answer:Replace z500 screen with z500 touch screen?

HiWelcome to the forum and Happy New year!!This in all probabilities won't work.Reason: Touch devices have an extra glass touch layer over the lcd and both the touch and the lcd are distinctively attached to the main circuit/systemboard of the device/laptop/mobile/tablets.So, firstly, your mainboard should atleast have a port to attach a touch glass and secondly, the structure of the laptop should support it too.So, in my opinioin, it is a suicidal move and you should try it.Hope this Helps.Regards

Hi everyone,  I just bought a Z500 touch, and I would like to change the 1T HDD to a SDD of 256 Gb capacity. Is there a safe way to perform the complete migration? I would like to keep the OneKey Recovery working with the Lenovo button. I have searched the forum, but found too many discussions on this and I'm very confused. I guess the best way is to build an image of the disk, resizing only the C: partition in order to fit into the 256 Gb disk.If any option is too risky, I'd prefer keeping the Z500 as it is, because I want to keep the OneKey recovery button working.

Answer:migration from HDD to SSD on Z500 Touch

Hi michele2198,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

The computer is compatible with SSD but the OKR (One Key Recovery) button which is provided in the computer will not work even after re-imaging the SSD, as per OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

Hence it is recommend not to change the HDD in the computer to SSD, even after creating the Recovery Media using Windows 8 option, restoring it to the new SSD will not create the OS (Operating System) image on it.

Do post us back for further queries.

Best Regards

Shiva Kumar

I have the new Z500 Touch on the way and have a couple of questions. It is my understanding that there is an open mSATA slot on these but I do not know if it is mSATA II or III. I am wanting to use it as my primary and use the 1TB 5400 for storage. What is the best way to clone my HDD and retain OKT on the new mSATA?

Answer:New Z500 Touch mSATA

hi clone1008,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

The Lenovo Z500 has two mini PCI-E card slots but it doesn't indicate that it supports mSATA signaling as per page 27 of the hardware maintenance manual (more info on PCI-E / mSATA combo here).

What you can try is to:

Option 1:
Replace the ODD with a 2.5 HDD Caddy (9.5mm) and get a OCZ Synapse SSD Cache for you data caching needs

Option 2:
Mmigrate to a SSD+HDD drive, OCZ Technology 128GB Vertex 4 as the main drive, and the 1TB HDD drive on the 2.5 HDD Caddy (9.5mm).

Doing Option 2 upgrade will not guarantee that you'll still be able to use the OKR button even if you clone the drive but you could follow cloning instructions on this article.

Hope this helps.

Question: z500 touch webcam

Sorry if this is not posted in the correct area. It's been a while now, but everything I've tried and the built in webcam is not working. The webcam does not show up on device manager (there isn't even a tab for imaging devices) and whenever I try to install the drivers it says "No appropriate driver to be installed". The only restore points seem to be recent, certainly while the webcam isn't working. This is very frustrating with family overseas, so any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a one week old Z500 Touch. It is my aim to make a backup copy of all programs included in the purchase in case of unforeseen disaster later on. It seem easy to do so I thought while deciding on the purchase. To prepare I started reading Lenovo's forum to decide on how to go about it. After reading, I learned that it is quite different and difficult than what I thought it to be. The forum discussions about this topic is split into two thread, the old thread (Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature) and the new thread (new disk partitioning and one key recover feature), due to the large number of responses from the community members. Reading through the long thread I learned that:1. The OKR function is the most difficult to replicate.2. There is a hidden partition needed for the OKR function.3. Resizing the partitions is not advisable. Erasing and rebuilding the partition will not work.4. Four partitions have been reported by some using Windows Disk Management.5. The OKR only recovers the system, recover back to factory or recover back to a period where backuped is made using the OKR. This will only work provided the hidden partition is left alone or intact.6. Cloning has been claimed to sometimes work.7. Disk copying also has been claimed sometime to work. Partition or Sector-by-sector copying? What I have done:1. I made a windows system image successfully to an external hdd. Restoration have not been verified.2. I also made a system backup usi... Hi Guys, So I am looking at swapping the DVD drive out for a 2nd HDD which will go into a caddy which I have. I would just like to know how you remove the DVD bezel/faceplate so that it can be transferred onto the HDD caddy. I've tried pulling at it and pushing all the little tabs I can see but it won't budge and I don't want to break it. Thanks

Upgraded the Windows 8 z500 Touch to 8 Pro. Had to use volume license, full upgrade, so need to reinstall Intel Bluetooth drivers (Generic Microsoft currently installed by upgrade process). The Driver downloads specify "Windows 8". Does that also apply to Windows 8 Pro? I ask because I have found sometimes what applies to Windows 8 does not apply to Windows 8 Pro. Thanks.Joan

I have a Z500 Touch Netbook which comes with a built in dvd drive. When I go to play any dvd on it the drive spins very fast creating a loud noise as a result. In my experience all other laptops I have used do this initially but after a minute or so quiten down. However this laptop is not doing that. Instead it is continuing to spin at a very high speed when it doesn't need to. The is making lots of noise and makes attempting to watch dvds pointless as I cannot hear them over the disk drive. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Answer:Z500 Touch Dvd Drive Noise

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I?m sorry to hear that your Z500 Touch Net book is generating noise while accessing the CD/DVD discs. Please let me know if the issue is same for all the discs and ensure while watching the movie the Laptop is placed on a flat surface.

I've had my Z500 Touch for a few years now but it recently started having problems with the wifi adapter. When I conenct to the wifi it works fine for a minute or two but then the wifi adapter seems to crash completely.after some time it starts up again but I won't get more than maximum five minutes on the wifi before it crashes again. When I've attempted to see if I could fix the wifi adapter while it's down whole my computer crash. Sometimes it will also crash by itself after a long while of the constant adapter crashing. Now here is where it gets a little odd. When I have my laptop plugged into the charger I have no problems at all. Plugging in a cable works aswell.OS is Windows 10. So far my guess is the adapter just isn't working and I would need to get a whole new adapter but if anyone got a fix that would be great.

I've run into a very odd problem with my IdeaPad Z500 Touch. The laptop shuts down every 30 minutes exactly. Not a minute earlier or later. The event log shows only a Kernel Power error, which could mean anything. It's been a week and I've still not figured out whether it's a hardware or software issue. Although I doubt it could be the hardware since the shutdowns aren't random. There seems to be a timer somewhere that I'm not aware of. I have opened up the laptop and tested parts individually, as well as ran different hardware tests. All seems to be clear. If I put the laptop into sleep mode at 25 (or even 29) minutes and turn it back on after a second, it doesn't shut down for another 30 minutes. The laptop also does not shut down while in sleep mode, even when I leave it on for hours.

So my daughters Z500 is stuck in a boot loop when she got up the next day. She is away at school and I tried to help over the phone can't get to safe mode anymore in windows 8. I had purchased premium support for like 200 but apparently that only covers it if she drops it and something breaks so another 180 got me 1 year of software support. She waited a hour to finally talk with someone but they could not get it out of the boot loop. They are sending me a disk and then once I receive it get back on and they will try to help. I fixed computer for quite a while and that safe mode always got you out of a game apparently now there is no such thing and if you dont have a recovery disk and a windows update goes bad overnight like I suspect happened to my daughter there is no way to break into it and revert to Last Known or go into safe mode and uninstall whatever the issue is. I have read and heard from coworkers about using a ubuntu to boot and rename the system and software registry hive so it will go back to the previous last know. Also seeing where if you boot from a windows 8 CD and go to command prompt you can run some stuff to try and fix filessfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=c:\windows or clean up imagedism.exe /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth Once we do get this thing to boot and get it back up is there any way to get it so it will display a safe mode boot or recover option seeing someBcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes   &nbs... Drivers all show working properly. Not intermittent. Tried settings and no help. No response when touching screen at all. Can't calibrate. Bios has no update available. Nothing in manual under troubleshooting. Any quick fix suggestions have likely been tried, but open to all ideas. If all else fails, and assuming the digitizer is bad, what does repair entail and any rough estimate? Is there any recall? I see this issue on the forum a lot with not many folks getting it resolved.TIA!!

Answer:U310 IdeaPad Touch :The Touch Screen Stopped Working. No Previous Posts Have Helped.

hi c2nah777,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Have you tried booting the system in Recovery Mode (One Key Recovery), You're not going to Recover the system since your only going to check the touchscreen in that mode "Outside Windows"

See if the touhcscreen works there,
If Yes, I would suggest doing a factory Reset First Before jumping into a hardware Repair.
If No, Then I think you're correct with the digitizer.

I just recently got the Ideapad Z500 for my birthday and I loved it but there is one thing that is doing my head in and I wonder if there is a way to stop it or fix it. Basically the "i" key on my keyboard is super sensitive and I don't need to push it down, just slightly touching it types an "i" and means I keep accidentally typing an "i" just because I accidentally touched it. Does anyone have the same problem and do you know if there is a way of fixing it?!

should also mention I don't know if this is a feature of the laptop considering the "i" is a commonly used key??

Answer:ideapad z500

hi Safi2905,

Welcome to the Forums.

You might want to follow this thread and apply this battery firmware update to address the battery concerns. As for the fan kicking in at power up, this is most likely a thermal design to keep the laptop running cool - unless you're hearing rattling / grinding noise that might indicate a faulty fan, otherwise, this is normal.

I have the IdeaPad S510p touch, which seems to have a similar problem as other Lenovo models where the touch screen seems to stop working intermittently.  It seems to stop working after a while or after it has been sleeping.  It starts working again randomly.  I tried downloading a driver for a different model, but it didn't load or allow me to open it.  I just got this computer a few days ago.  I'm not sure if it is better just to take it back to the store, but I am concerned that this problem will exist even if I exchange it for a new one...

Make sure Windows has updated entirely. As it is a brand new operating system, there will be some bugs . Microsoft released a 1GB patch and that might solve some issues for you. Just search Update in Cortana and select the Windows Update/Settings option, then check for updates and install them.

Answer:backlight on keyboard for z500 touch not working

hi Gadi621,

Welcome to the Forums.

I'm not seing any changelog related to any keyboard backlight changee from the BIOS readme.txt file so I think it's unlikely that updating the BIOS is the cause of the problem.

Just to check, when you power up the machine, do you see the keyboard backlight turning on?

Ideally, for the backlit to work, the following must be met:
1. A backlit-type keyboard must be installe (you can tell if the keyboard has backlights when there's a "crown" like icon on the space bar.
    - Link to picture
2. The keyboard ribbon & power cable (for backlit) must be properly connected to the motherboard
    - Link to picture
    - Link to picture

If one of the following is not met, the backlight feature won't work.

If you haven't re-install the audio drivers, now might be a good time to try.  The link below is for the available drivers from Lenovo for your model.  Just select your operating system in the top box to obtain a correct listing of the drivers.

It is unfortunate that you didn't try and resolve the problem during your warranty period as it could be hardware related.

I'm getting to my wits end with my laptop. I have a Z500 Touch, windows 8, and I love it apart from the fact the mouse keeps randomly disappearing. I have no idea what triggers it. It's whilst I'm using my laptop too, it doesn't disappear after it goes to sleep or is locked etc.

Tried several different things, ctrl alt delete, F6 etc, none working at the moment. Tried to see if any of my devices needed fixing, and that was a no go too. I don't have a usb mouse to plug in at the moment, and I'd prefer to figure out how to stop or at least fix this without having to get one if at all possible

I don't know if this is a setting or a button I keep accidentally pushing, but if someone could please tell me how to get my mouse cursor back I'd be eternally grateful as this is driving me insane - the only reason I could even get on here was because this is touchscreen, but I miss my mouse pointer!!

Answer:Z500 Touch - Mouse Pointer Disappearing

hi emmz992,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, did you encounter this issue the first time you setup the PC or you just encountered this lately?

If it's just lately, can you try one of the following:
1. Disable "hide pointer while typing" under Control Panel (large icon view) > Mouse > Pointer Options Tab and enable "Show location of pointer when i press CTRL key"
  - Link to picture

2. Uninstall the Touchpad Driver (ELAN or Synaptics) under Control Panel > Programs and reboot. Upon logging back in, Windows will use a generic touchpad driver. Try to observe the mouse pointer behavior and observe (you can always re-install the touchpad driver by navigating to D:\Drivers\Touchpad or by downloading the driver from the lenovo website).

3. Boot in Safe Mode with Networking and observe the mouse pointer behavior. If all goes well, perform a clean boot and observe. If same problem, perform a System Restore in safe mode to undo any possible updates that was installed on the system (ensure that you make a backup copy of your files).

Hello,I am thinking about purchasing an Ideapad Z500 and I would like to ask, if there is an empty slot for a mSATA SSD? I could not find any Z500 model with an SSD. I will appreciate any help on this topic. Thanks

Answer:Ideapad Z500 - mSATA SSD??

I had a look in mine... no msata connector. The empty space and the solder pads are there on the board, but NO connector It looks like that the control chip for the (optional) msata port is missing as well. Now ordered a bay for the optical drive, including converter from msata to 2.5" sata.

Hi,

My one month old z500 fails to boot and gives an error message saying "DEFAULT BOOT DEVICE MISSING OR BOOT FAILED."

This happened after i had to force my pc to shut down by pressing and holding the power button because it hadn't been responding for a while and I was only browsing on the web. When I attempted to restart it I encountered that error message

I suspect it's a hdd related problem because when I enter BIOS it says "not detected" in front of "Hard Disk" caption. That means hard disk is not recognized by BIOS. I tried one key recovery but it's useles cause nothing happens when I press okr button.

What do you think this is caused by and what should be done to recover my pc.

Thanks in advance...  Sorry for bad English.

Hi all, I have an issue with my Lenovo Z500 touch. The USB 3.0 port on the left is not working. When I attach an external HDD, the HDD light is on, so it is powered, it is not seen by my pc.I have looked in the Device Manager and there's an error in the USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller. It says that the device cannot start. Tried to udate the driver, but it says that the driver is up to date. I have Windows 8.1. The other 2 USB 2.0 ports work fine. Any idea? Could be a driver problem? Here is the event in the Device manager: Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E31&SUBSYS_397717AA&REV_04\3&11583659&0&A0 had a problem starting.Driver Name: usbxhci.inf Thank you in advance. Michele

Answer:Ideapad z500 USB 3.0 not working

I uninstalled all the USB drivers, then rebooted. The Device Manager says that the USB controller works properly, however, the HDD is still not recognized.

Hi abodialansi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This configuration with the RAM is OK

Based on the Datasheet of your model This can go to 8GB / 16GB
Ive highlighted the option you prefer with the RAM

About the Discrete NVIDIA GPU, Itis soldered to the Mainboard thus not letting any upgrade to it.
Upgrading the board means upgrading the whole Motherboard, which might not be preferred since it may only give you a minimal upgrade in terms of performance.

Hope this info helped

Hi,I have z500 ideapad with 6 GB ram,1TB HDD and i5 processor...could you please tell me till which memry system will support...shall I upgrade to 12 GB8gb and 4 GB in two slotsPlease adviceThanks,Rajesh

Answer:Z500 ideapad RAM upgrade

hi Rajesh,

Welcome to the Forums.

From page 26 of the HMM, the Z500 can take up to:

Standard  Memory ? DDR3-1600/1333MHz SODIMM × 2 (max 16 GB)

A 12GB (8GB+4GB) upgrade is also feasible but if the machine came with 4GB (2GBx2), I would go for an 8GB(4GBx2) or 16GB (8GBx2) depending on your needs and workload.

Hello!I bought my new Lenovo Ideapad Z500 only two weeks ago and since than it works fine, however yesterday it produced a very strange error. When I turn on my laptop it stops when the Lenovo logo shows up and freezes. The worst problem is that, it doesn't happen every time I turn it on, so when I bruoght it back to the shop, it was working fine again, and after I arrived home, it did the same error. It wasn't only a one time experience, I've tried it at least ten times, and it stopped on the Lenovo logo over and over again. I send it back to the service, however, I am curious whether I'm the only one facing with this weird issue or not. Thank you for your time!Best regards to all!

Answer:Ideapad Z500 won't start

Hi doma,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that the computer is hanging at Lenovo LOGO; this may be the issue with the bad sectors in the HDD, we are getting this issue for the first time. As you have sent it to the service center you need not worry the issue will be resolved.

Do post us back for further queries.

Hi.I bought the Lenovo Ideapad Z500 and I'm trying to boot from a USB drive in order to install Windows on it.When I start the boot menu I only see the hard-drive, the DVD and the network.I tried to set both UEFI mode and Legacy mode in BIOS but the USB stick does not appear in the menu when I boot.I put the image of windows with Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool which formats the stick in NTFS mode.I have the latest BIOS v1.21 and I tried with 2 different USB sticks: one 16GB USB 2.0 Corsair and with a 32GB USB 3.0 ADATA both on USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports on the notebook.I really haven't seen anything like this in my entire career. I even downloaded the file efi\boot\BOOTX64.efi and replaced the one that Windows come with on the specified folder on the USB stick ....Why is so difficult to choose the USB boot drive on the newer notebooks?Does someone have a clue how can I boot from USB?Thanks in advance!  Bupitz

Answer:USB boot for Ideapad Z500

Hi,

I don't think I can be of much help, but a couple of things to try:  if your USB flash drive is formatted NTFS, it will only boot in legacy mode if it is bootable at all.  One thing you might try is to set the partition active if it isn't already.

If you want to boot in UEFI mode, format the flash drive with a single FAT32 partition.  Copy the contents of your install DVD to the flash drive.  If you're using an ISO copy the contents of the iso using a tool like 7zip.  UEFI bootabiliyt doesn't require using a special tool to prep the drive.  Just format it and copy the install medium to it.

Win7 requires CSM support in bios to boot successfully in UEFI mode.  That may always be enabled in UEFI mode or it may be a separate option in BIOS.

Hi, I am in the market for a new laptop and have narrowed my choices to the Sony Vaio S here http://bit.ly/TAPlYC with Windows 8 Pro and 1 year of support as perhaps the only upgrades and the IdeaPad z500s here http://lnv.gy/WtWizp . I am upset that Lenovo does not offer the 7200 rpm option for the hard drive nor a higher screen resoltion. I personally think the 1920 x 1080 on the Viao S is a bit too high, but the 1366x768 of the z500 is way way way too low in my opinion. I want to love lenovo because the community seems great, but the lack of upgrade options is troubling.  Also, a more general question: I am a web developer that does php/html/css editing/developing using a text editor (not heavy ones like Dreamweaver), watches netflix and listens to things like Spotify. Are the HD 4000 Graphics good enough for me? I know RAM is helpful here, but I like to buy my own RAM because it's fun hunting for it (thats why I dont need an 8GB lenovo option to buy) Any thoughts/advice? Thanks, James

Answer:IdeaPad Z500 - low specs?

hi James,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

If you're leaning to the Lenovo Z500, the built-in HD 4000 graphics will be good enough for any php/html programming (especially if you use editors) as this embedded graphics card is on par with the AMD Radeon HD 7520G (based on 3D benchmark).

The screen size though is something that can't be customized but the HDD, you can. If you want fast boot-up,and response time pf your programs you might wanna consider switching to SSD as it's 2-3 times faster than a regular HDD and you can get an enclosure to convert your HDD as an external drive or make your system a hyrid drive (SSD as primary, HDD as secondary, you will need this:

I have an Ideapad Z500 running Windows 8.1 pro but get many problems such as "Reset your Pc not working "Insert Media Some files are missing. Your windows installation or recovery medial will provide these files". This is a frequent occurrence. I have tried reinstalling and repairing but the same problem arises. Microsoft's answer to this is: How to create installation media for a PC refresh or reset http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media but I can't do this as I don't have a PC running Windows 7. There is also the problem of so many unwanted adverts on Windows 8 that I get frustrated at times as othe time consuming problems arise.A computer savvy friend suggests I change the OS to Linux 12.04, so I ask do you have experience of this and is the OS compatible with the Z500. Is it a simple uninstall Windows 8 and install Linux or are there complications?Failing that do I downgrade to Windows 7 (at more cost) or can you recommend some other option. Windows 8 is totally spoiled because of all the intrusive adverts, especially on XBox.

Hi there, sorry to be a bother.Like the title says, my touch screen stopped working. I went on to my computer one afternoon and found my mouse stuck in the top left corner, fidgeting. This was what I was expiriencing. (My touch-screen still worked fine at the time, but I still couldn't do anything or control the mouse, but I could tell that it was still working and it still responded.) After a bit of time and a few restarts later, it went back to normal, but my touch-screen then stopped working. I'm used to the touch-screen working incorrectly occasionally, and much like the mouse thing, a restart or two helps. It has now been three days and my touchs-creen still does not work. I've tried many of the solutions found in these forums, but to no avail. I am running Windows 10 and have had this computer for 2+ years.  Thanks.

Answer:Z500 touch battery issue plugged in not charging

hi lebanese,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

If you're following this article on how to fix the battery charging issue for the Z500 Touch but a "No battery attached" error appears, try to turn the computer off and hold the power button for 20secs. When done, boot back into Windows and check if the battery is now detected.

If same "No battery attached" error appears then I'm afraid this firmware update won't work as the battery or the connection of the battery to the motherboard might be defective (the battery needs to be connected for the firmware update to work).

I recommend you contact Lenovo and report the issue as you may need to send the unit for service.
