Windows Explorer: Save sort by modification date

Question: Windows Explorer: Save sort by modification date

All,
Windows Explorer is sorting files on a network drive always by name. It doesn't save sorting by modification date. Where can I reset this behavior?
We had temporarily activated GPOs at "User Configuration," / "Preferences" / "Control Panel Settings." / "Folder Options (Windows Vista and later)." / (Hide Extensions for Known File Types), but I think that's not
directly related.
Thank you in advance.

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer: Save sort by modification date

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The title says it all; I'd like to organize music I've added to my hard drive by date added and/or date changed. Is there a way to do that?
Thanks.

Answer:Can files be arranged in Windows Explorer by date of modification?

Yes they can.

Open Windows Explorer>Right-click>Arrange Icons By>Modified.

That should do it.

On my external hard drive, I have a ton of photos from different cameras that retain the weird file-naming scheme that the camera implements so the order is weird and out of whack. I've been wanting to organize these photos and thought the best way to do it would be to sort it by date; however, when I click the sort-by date tab, it takes FOREVER to sort it.

It's weird because this seems to only happen with certain folders and not others within the same drive so I'm pretty baffled as to why this happens and how to fix it.

I tried to do a search on the forum to see if anyone else encountered a similar problem by searching the word "sort" but I came up empty. Any help would be appreciated!

Answer:Problems with Sort by Date in Windows Explorer

Well that was quick... of course I find the solution after I make a post.

I don't know if this solution is permanent but I hope it is. Basically, what I did was I optimized the folder for "General Files" after going to the folder's Properties and clicking the "Customize" tab.

(d)  DO NOT DISPLAY LAST USERNAME NOT ENABLED.
(e)  SCREEN SAVER PASSWORD NOT ENABLED.
The problem now am facing is that all these were implemented and there were no violations to be in the report.
How do i prove that these were implemented on some date before the audit took place and was not changed after the audit and that their report has some wrong feed?

Greetings!

I can't seem to save the 'sort by' settings, I tend to organise it by 'Contributing artists' yet every time I close the window and re-open it windows explorer resets it and sorts by name. I have tried restarting in safe mode, and it produced the exact same results.

I'm able to sort other folders such as 'my documents' by size/date modified etc. but for some reason it won?t do this for 'My Music' folder.

Can anyone help?

Answer:Explorer refuses to save 'sort by' settings for 'My Music'

Hi Grimmrock

Have you tried going into that particular folder options? Clicking the "View" tab at the top, then clicking options "button" to the far right side, then on that "pop up" window, select view tab, then click the apply to folders button?

Every disk and/ or folder when I tick sort by name-ascending the damn thing reverts to date modified-descending if I leave said disk or folder and return. I tried "Enable_Auto_Arrange_in_File_Explorer.bat" and "Reset_Folder_View_Settings_of_All_Folders_to_Default.bat" courtesy of Brink to no avail.

Is there a way to get file explorer back to default sort (by name-ascending) for all disks, folders and sub-folders at once?

It was all fine last week and I've no recollection of playing with any settings. Very frustrating.
Thank You.

Answer:File explorer sort reverts to "date modified"

Hi! I have a certain problem, I need to:
-Find all files on both C and D partition that has a modification date never than actual ;
-Change the date to actual for all files found
I tried to do it with Total Commander, but the only solution I managed to find was finding the files and setting their dates manually with 'change attributes' function, and while I have more than 1000 files with wrong date it would take quite a lot of time to fix'em all. I've just downloaded TC  today and don't know it well.
It's better for me to have it solved fastly and I'd be grateful for any solution how to do it in TC or in any other way.

Oh, I would have forgotten to say that I'm using WinXP Home.

Okay I managed to change the attribute for many files, but now I have the question how to do it with those, that don't allow TC to change it?

Help! This should be easy but I can't get it to work.

I have a report that must group by Trip# and sort by ascending activity date all of the various activities that took place on multiple days of the trip.
Further, the trip with the earliest date must come first regardless of the Trip#.
I've accomplished getting the earliest starting date trip first and grouping its detail with a unique string made up of the earliest date of each trip formatted to YYYYMMDD+Trip#. This prints a trip total and works fine.

But the daily activity for the trip is out of date sequence.
Adding a Date field to the 'Sorting and Grouping' insists on breaking on and printing a sub-total for each of the trips activity dates.
Without the sorting & grouping by date the trip records are out of sequence even though the data source query is sorted ascending by activity date.

(see attachments that show the above)

The only solution I can think of is to create a sub-report sorted by activity date.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

my mom has 6 years of photos on one of her 500GB HD's. She hates windows 7. Her latest complaint that I have not been able to figure out is folder sorting.

Mom has a folder called "camera dump" in the "my pictures" folder.
In the camera dump she has 6 years of folders containing photographs.

Currently windows 7 is sorting the left side screen like this:

1-18-2013
1-21-2014
2-05-2011
2-05-2012

The problem is mom wants them in proper chronological order.. In other words, all of 2011 in proper order Jan to Dec, and 2012 after that, and 2013 after that.

1-06-2011
2-29-2012
3-09-2013
5-28-2014
Can anyone tell me how to do that? Ive tried just about every sorting option I can find in windows 7.
I suggested to her that she use YEAR master folders, then put the months inside as sub folders.

Thanks.

I set a folder to sort the files within it in date order, but it appears to have also applied this sorting method to the other folders within the root directory (it is a folder within the pictures library). Is there anyway to set it so that only the one folder has it's files sorted by date?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Windows Explorer 'Sort By'

Hello krustykobb,

In libraries, folder view settings are shared with all included folders in the library no matter which folder it was set in.

To have individual folder views, you would need to view the actual folder itself. For example, at "C:\Users\(user-name)\Pictures" instead of in the Pictures library.

Hope this helps,

I'm using Windows XP and my second hard drive is 100 GB with compression allowed, formatted NTFS. My problem is that files starting with numbers, especially multiple numbers, do not sort correctly. Files names starting with the alphabet sort fine. I checked the Knowledge Base and found that files starting with 10 consecutive numbers (all the same) did not sort due to an XP bug that was fixed with SP1 a, but that did not seem to apply to my problelm. Any ideas?

Answer:Windows XP Explorer sort

It puts the ones with numbers before letters. Kinda like the "letters" before A.

You can no longer sort the contents of a file listing in Windows Explorer, keeping a selection of files made in the previous sort order.
If this is a bug I would like to know, than I will report it appropriately, otherwise - if it is "by design" - I would like an explanation, why this function was removed.
As I see it, sorting has to be possible with the selection of files kept intact.
Searching the net I find many people being upset that this is not possible in Windows 7. I used it all the time at work, on my XP machine. I used to select all dll-files in a certain folder, and then sort by "Date modified", which resulted in a
list of files sorted by date, and with the appropriate files selected. This was an easy way to find out which dll files had changed last in our development environment - just sorting by date makes a lot of other files, such as log files and debug files appear
in between the dll files.

How can I set the defaults for "Windows Explorer" or whatever it is now called.

I want it to ALWAYS for every "folder" I ever open, ever again to eternity, to have sort by file type as one the the few defaults listed. By "type" I mean file extension. I want to set this one time in one spot and have it stick. Currently I have to go through several menus and scrool to the bottom of a long list to turn this on because it's not one of the defaults. Next folder I open -same thing again. Very annoying. I have to sort lots of "folders" and separate file types.

When I sort files in programs like MS Word, Excel, and others, sort is lightning-fast. When I sort files in Windows Explorer, the process is painfully slow. Explorer tells me my searches are slow because index isn't running. I turn on Index when prompted to do so, but when I check it in Index Options, it always reports it's not running.
When I drill down to a folder, right-click on it, and click the Customize tab, I make sure the default setting of "General Items" is set. Still very slow sort. I've tried the other settings, too, but the slow sort continues.
Thumbnails appear very slowly, too, when I look in jpeg directories, for example.
I'm talking about folders with 250 to about 400 files. As I recall, Windows Explorer sort in XP was blazingly fast--at least for me. Same number of files, or more.
Windows 7 is up to date, and I'm using only a fraction of the total hard drive space. Plenty of RAM (see specs). How do I get that fast sort again?

Answer:Windows Explorer Slow Sort

Check and make sure the Windows Search Service is running first. If it is, then run a CHKDSK. Then run a Defrag.
If you don't know how to do any of this, here you go:

Step 1. Check the Windows Search Service is running
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Administrative Tools
Click Services
Find the Service called "Windows Search"
Make sure it is running, and set to Automatic.
If not, start it and change the Startup Type to "Automatic"
Step 2: Run a CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Click Start
Click Run, and type in "cmd" (without quotes), and make sure to check Run with Admin privs.
If Run isn't there, type in "cmd" (without quotes) in the Search box. An icon will appear saying cmd. Right click it, and select "Run as Administrator". You may have to enter an admin password.
A black box will open. Type the following: "chkdsk c: /f" (without quotes)
It will give you a message saying it cannot check the volume since it is in use, and ask you to allow it to do it on a reboot. Answer "Y" (Yes). After that, reboot the computer. You will see a blue background with white text doing a check on the disk. Don't worry, it will complete by itself in 5-15 minutes, and then reboot.
Step 3: Run a Defrag (MAY help your issue)
Click Start
Click Run, and type in "cmd" (without quotes), and make sure to check Run with Admin privs.
If Run isn't there, type in "cmd" (without quotes) in the Search box. An icon will app... Read more

I have this problem. When I save an email with the option "save as" from windows mail IT will print the current date without maintaining the mail by default, but if you drag the email with the mouse and loose it in a folder now. I'm trying to fix this with this, but, did not work:
1) the .eml files change to the present date when they are indexed by the search indexer; this is, a few seconds after creation. Thus, backup/restore/sync will not work properly, but indexing.
2) if you delete that mentioned registry key, then the indexing of .eml files no longer works, i.e. you cannot find them in a full-text search. However, backup works now.
3) it is unknown whether the other solution, proposed by alecamiga, to link .eml to thunderbird and write lock the files, does the same or works better.

Answer:Sort date daily

Hi,Here is a macro that should do what you want.Your source data is in a worksheet named "Source"Your report is created in a worksheet named "Report"If these are not the names used, either change the names of the worksheets or change them in these lines in the macro: 'change name of source worksheet here
strSrcWS = "Source"
'change name of report worksheet here
strRptWS = "Report"The source data is in these columns, starting at row 2 A B C D E
1 Name Room Status From Date
2 Wayne, Greg 440-2 Medicare AAA 1/23/10
3 Chin, Peter 520-3 Private BBB 2/23/10
4 King, Larry 422-4 Insurance CCC 1/23/10
5 Cohen, Alex 545-3 Medicare AAA 2/23/10
Due to the way that the macro finds the end of the source data, all cells in column A below the last data must be empty. On the report page the date will be entered in cell C1 as follows: A B C
1 Report for 1/23/10
2 Date Name StatusAdd the other headings, as shown. When the macro is run, this is the result: A B C
1 Report for 1/23/10
2 Date Name Status
3 1/23/10 Wayne, Greg Medicare
4 1/23/10 King, Larry Insurance
The macro is triggered by either changing the date in cell C1 on the report page, or to re-run for the same date, select C2, click in the formula bar and click the adjacent check mark.As changes made by Macros cannot be undone with the Undo button, test this macro on a copy of your data. i have windows xp sp3 professional. this problem has nothing to do with user settings as it happens on clean installation as well.

making a file in explorer, beginning with tilde, example:

~system related

now its normal that in xp newly created files are at the bottom before you hit refresh. thats not the problem.

i'm using details view, arrange icons by type, auto arrange.

and when i browse to a folder that already contains a file that starts with a tilde for example, the file is always displayed on bottom. but. when i hit refresh, files starting with a tilde are displayed at top. in popup browsing menus, files starting with a tilde are also displayed on top. but on initial folder navigation they are always displayed on the bottom and you have to hit refresh in order to see them on top.

but if i make a file like: !test

for example, this file will always be on top and so will every file starting with an exclamation mark. so is there some kind of fix to this sorting inconsistencies, either that the files remain on bottom or top.

for starters, you that have xp, can you reproduce this problem on your systems?

i did the search engine part and all results explain the problem with logical number sorting and difference between auto refresh on 7 and no auto refresh on xp, but nothing about this.

Sometimes Windows Explorer seems to fail to sort files into the correct order. In the attached image, which is the list of files in the folder Receipts, which you can see from the little arrow I have requested to be sorted in ascending order of file name, why are the files ADCreceipt1211xx.pdf. ADCreceipt1211xy.pdf, ADCreceipt1212xx.pdf and ADCreceipt1301xxSWREG.pdf listed before the file ADCreceipt120501.pdf? By any sort algorithm that I can imagine, 1205 ought to come before 1211, oughtn't it?

Is this possibly something to do with the strange phenomenon in recent versions of Windows that Explorer seems incapable of showing recently changed files (i.e. files recently created, deleted or renamed). This gives some really strange effects, such as when you delete a file and then rename a different file to the same name as the deleted file. If you don't believe me, try it!

Any suggestions on how to get around these problems?

Thanks - Rowan

is there a way to sort 'like a library' in windows explorer (omit 'The ' and 'A ' from file names)? i.e.
i have the files (sorted as windows would normally do with sort by name):

A File 4.ext
A File 2.ext
File 3.ext
File 7.ext
The File 1.ext
The File 5.ext
The File 6.ext
The File 8.ext
The File 9.ext
...

and i want:

The File 1.ext
A File 2.ext
File 3.ext
A File 4.ext
The File 5.ext
The File 6.ext
File 7.ext
The File 8.ext
The File 9.ext

i do not want to rename my files like this:

File 1, The.ext
File 2, A.ext
File 3.ext
File 4, A.ext
File 5, The.ext
File 6, The.ext
File 7.ext
File 8, The.ext
File 9, The.ext

or this:

File 1.ext
File 2.ext
File 3.ext
File 4.ext
File 5.ext
File 6.ext
File 7.ext
File 8.ext
File 9.ext

please note the file name formats are actually 'The Film.avi' or 'The TV Show SXXEYY.mp4' (where XX is the Series andY Y is the Epesode as a double digit numbers)

if there is anyway to do this or a 3rd party program that will work with network sharing (my files are not on the local machine but a file server running windows 7)

Answer:sort 'like a library' in windows explorer (omit 'The ' and 'A ')

May I ask you why are you trying to avoid renaming them? Are you seeding them?

There are good free batch renaming software (like Rename Master) out there.

Windows Explorer sorts filenames like this: 12417192231100 That makes sense when each string of digits represents a number, but when the digits are arbitrary, that ordering is unhelpful andconfusing. This is better: 11001719222314 All the ones together, all the twos together, and so on. Is therean easy way to get that ordering under Windows Explorer? -- Jeff, in Minneapolis

One option is to create a Library with your preference. Don't know why, but Libraries are sorted folders first and then by date (if you select by date of course..)

Creating Library is simple... First make sure Libraries are shown (in file explorer in left tree right click on empty space and select New. Then you add folders.

I have input dates into my database table in the short date formula for example: 01/07/2005. Can anyone tell me how to sort these dates in a chronological order? If i try to sort them as they are they just appear in ascending order using the first 2 numbers for example using the above date layout '01'. I have several different years on the database. How can the years and dates be sorted chronologically???Help much appreciated thankyou!!!

Answer:Access 2000 'date sort'

it sounds like you are recording the dates as text. This is why they are being sorted 01/01, 01/02 etc.The easiest solution would be to see if you can convert the field in the table to a date field. If this is not possibel then you could try either the format, or convert function in the query to convert the field to a date, then sort on that.If you need any help on the convert or format function please post back here.

I am using a program that OCR's a page and then creates a folder for it inside an output folder...
Goes like this:
Input folder -> OCR program -> Output folder -> [Folder just for that document]

I keep the output folder open so that i can see the new folders being created for the OCR records, which i can then drag additional files to that records folder.
Since im dealing with thousands of folders im depending on vista to sort by date modified so that the newest one shows up on top.... But im running into a problem

I've done about 700 records now (700 folders have been created) and for some reason the date modified stopped working. Now the new folder is showing up at the end instead of the beginning. If i hit F5 to refresh the window it move to the top where it should be.... but im going through thousands of records and hitting F5 for every record consumes time and makes room for error.

Why did vista stop sorting by date modified? I didnt change anything, all of the sudden it just stopped being consistent. I can restart the computer and sometimes it will start working properly again for about 30 records, but its not guaranteee.

Please help me fix this, THANKS!

Answer:date modified sort in vista

Right click the folder, select properties, select the customize tab (or press Alt-V, "Customize this folder" from inside the folder) and make sure "All items" is selected from the first drop down.

I wish Vista would always just default to the All items view. It selects a bad default way too often.

Whenever I open a folder and want to "sort by date (modified)", Windows 7 sorts by descending order. I have to click again to get ascending order (in XP this was not a problem). Is there a registry hack or some other way of getting Windows 7 to sort by (modified) date in ascending order when you click on "sort by date"? Various searches have only come up with bogus or obvious answers (e.g., click again to change order, "group by" (which doesn't maintain setting when reset to "sort by date"), etc.). Thanks for any "real" help.

I understand that by right clicking on the sorting bar you can choose and add dozens of ways to sort your files. How do I apply one (Date Accessed) not just for one folder, but for on the folders on my drive?

Answer:How to sort by Date Accessed in all folders?

I'm assuming this is what you are after.
1. Click the Start Menu Orb and then Search for cmd. Once that comes up Right-Click cmd.exe and SelectRun as administrator.
2. The UAC prompt will appear… Click Yes!
3. Now in the cmd prompt, Type in “ fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 0 “ and Press Enter.
4. Restart your PC for changes to take affect.

After restart
1. Switch the Window view to Details.
2. Right-Click category bar and Click More…
3. On the next window Scroll down and Check the box for Date Accessed and then Press OK.
That’s it! Now when you do Windows Searches it will pull up and show the Date accessed category.

Hope this helps Dan

Hello, I am having difficulty getting Excel to sort by date with the following dates:

Column A
09/20/2012
09/21/2012
10/20/2012
02/20/2012

When I select "sort newest to oldest" it sorts the dates this way:

10/20/2012
09/20/2012
09/21/2012
02/20/2012

I have verified that the dates are not formatted as text and have altered the way the date is shown, trying it without the zero and with the zero and nothing changes.

hi,
when i download photos from my canon camera, they are all put in a folder that is named according to the DOWNLOAD DATE. i'd like the photos to go into folders that are named according to the SHOOTING DATES. this was the behavior of windows in the past and for some reason it changed.
can you tell me how to change this and to get the photos sorted according to the date they were taken?

can you also tell me how to number the photos continuously, instead of numbering from 1 on each new date? i'd like the photos from day one numbered 1 to 14, from day two 15 to 23, and so on.

Answer:Sort downloaded photos by date taken

Hi tamirhoresh

I use the following free application to organize my images as part of my workflow.

cam2pc - Image Viewer and fully featured Digital Imaging software to Download, Organize, Modify and Share your photos

It has a down loader that should work with your camera and will allow much finer control than any of the manufacturers offerings. It will even re-name your existing structure to what you decide to go with

It can actually create folders and image filenames from the files own internal MetaData.

There is a Paid version but have found that the freeware does everything I need.

It is compatible with MS photo programs but actually contains a good set of display options so may even replace them

Hello. If I select Date from the "Arranged By" field in Outlook 2007, it sorts by the date each message was received. I know that I can sort by the sent date by clicking on "Custom", then under Sort selecting Sent. This is a pain to go through all of this, however, since Outlook reverts back to the received date every time I sort by something else or search for an email, etc. I'd like to know if there is a way I can change Outlook so the default date sort is the sent date instead of the received date. I'm fine with editing the registry and what-not if need be.

Ive got vista x64 and Im tryin to figure out how to sort a folder by the date I DLed the contents. In Xp it was np but I cant seem to get it work in vista. Ive tried Date Received Date Modified Date Taken... everything with Date in the sort type and none of em work they either dont change at all or just end up in abc order. What Im goin for is sorting the contents exactly by date and time of how they ended up in the folder. Any ideas? Also before I forget about it. Ive got a folder on an HDD that wasnt modified when I installed vista I installed vista on a completely new HDD. Now in windows explorer in vista that folder thats on a completely separate drive is missing roughly 100 files completely randomly. Not any specific order I can find to whats missing (date, abc, etc) theyre just not showin up. The file size of the folder doesnt indicate theyve been deleted they just arent showin up.

I know that by clicking on the date header you can change that sorting to descending order. The problem is that I can't seem to get that change to "save". I'm a professional photographer and have recently begun shooting with two cameras simultaneously at events. They use different file names to avoid duplicate names/confusion, i.e. IMG_175000 and XMG_175000. Often times I'll take a photo with one camera and then take a photo immediately after it with the other camera and I'd like both of these images to be organized in the same subfolder and shown sequentially, but by default Windows Explorer lists all the "XMG_######" photos at the end and the IMG_###### photos at the beginning. I can manually sort each individual folder by going to "Sort by - Date" or even better, selecting "Sort by - More... and putting a check mark next to "Date Taken" so that it shows up in the Sort options (which it doesn't automatically) and then sorting by Date Taken, but since I'm dealing with hundreds of subfolders with hundreds of thousands of photo and video files I'd like a way to do this for all the files in these subfolders that isn't manual.

Is there a way to make Windows Explorer automatically arrange every file (both image and movie files) inside the various subfolders inside one root folder by Date or Date Taken instead of automatically always sorting them by name?

Thanks in advance!

I use ThumbsPlus to organize my photos. It has an auto rename feature, so you could sort by date and then rename by year/month or whatever, but it's notsuper automated - you would basically need to rename each months worth of files, which may or may not be a lot of work.

It's not super cheap if all you want to do is rename some files, but I think it has a free 30 day trial.

I have a mild annoyance in Windows Explorer (on XP) that I have been searching all around to try to find a solution for. It has to do with automatic sorting. Basically, new or modified files to a folder are not automatically sorted until the folder is refreshed.

Say I have all my files sorted by "Date Modified," from top to bottom, and then I open and edit, say, the third file. When I save the file, the "Date Modified" will instantly update. The problem, though, is that the file, despite it now being the most recently modified file, will still remain in the #3 spot until I refresh the list or change the sort order.

The same thing happens if, say, I sort files alphabetically, and then copy a file "Aardvark.txt" to the folder. It won't appear in its rightful place until the folder is refreshed.

I noticed that this problem seems to be fixed in both Vista and Windows 7, but I'm hoping there is a way to address it. I would love to be able to trust the folder's sorting without having to refresh it each time to make sure I have the updated sort order.

Anybody encounter this?

Whenever i check my mail I have to change the sort settings to sort by date because it keeps defaulting back to sort by subject at start up. Every other computer stays on whatever the last sort was when they exited Outlook. Anyone know what could be different about my software?

I have a music folder with 1,440 files and 38 folders and I like to keep the ones I've just added at the top. When I set the folder to sort by Date, it usually takes about a minute for the folder to show fully. The hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10. Is there anything I can do to speed it up? I don't want to put them all on an SSD (12.5GB).

Edit: I fixed it by changing the shortcut I was using from D:\Users\x\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries\Music.library-ms\ to D:\Users\x\Music\.

Answer:Sort by date takes long time for items to show

could you give me more info on your pc

A great way to do this is going to your start menu and at the search typing in dxdiag and hitting enter.

then clicking save all information (this will save it to a .txt file) and copying that information onto here

Thankyou :P

Hello guys, i recently installed windows 7 on my computer, thus making it a triboot system anyways the problem i have is this imgur: the simple image sharer , now what i want to do is bring the Local Disk(F) to the top place on the left hand side(like this imgur: the simple image sharer) and the only way i can do this is going to sort by percent full or amount of free space but whenever my disk space changes its position also changes so i can't do that, so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:How to sort windows partitions in windows explorer

Windows arranges HDD by usage and Drive Letter and percentage. There is no way to arrange them.

I also see you have three partition that are low on disk space I would recommend doing a Disk Clean up on them. Windows requires at least 15% disk space to defrag the HDD.

Go to start type in then hit enter
Code:
diskmgmt.msc
post a screen shot in your next post.

This is a problem that began the evening of December 27, 2014.

It began while I was on line with Internet Explorer. As it happens, I was on the Yahoo website.
Two things are happening.

First, I am getting multiple repetitive warnings that Avast Free has blocked malware. The details are different malwares each time, but each appears to end in "iexplore.exe" in the description.
I attach some examples.

Second, the screen goes blank several times, I get warnings about the display driver, and then I get a blue screen and which says something about a "memory dump" and then the machine reboots.

The blue screens usually happen when I am web browsing but not always.

Also, web sites are slow to open.

Avast Free is up to date; Malwarebytes and Spybot find nothing wrong. I do get CCleaner alerts that I have over 2 GB of data to clean.

When I switched to Firefox I still get multiple virus warnings; the bluescreens occur as well.
I also got several blue screens when I was not on any browser.

I also attach screen shots of the recent Avast history; I cannot seem to copy the data as a document.

I am at a loss as to how to save my computer.

Dell XPS 8500. Windows 7.

I was able to attach 6 of the 7 images i have prepared.

Hoping to get some help on this question please. I have reviewed the forum and found a similar post, but the sample data is more predictable than mine and the Macro posted doesn't work on my data. See post "Excel Macro to Move data in Rows to column" 28-Aug-2008, 05:47 AM".

On my data, I would like to be able to take the yellow row, and move the data up to the previous row starting in column "R". The rows I would like on the same line, all begin with a date. I don't know how to make a looping Macro that will identify the "date lines", and take the "second date line", and move it to the "first date line's" row.

Any help would be appreciated.
I have attached some sample data. (I hope that's okay?!)

Thank you!!!!
Christine

PS - The range on data varies.

Answer:Solved: Excel Macro to sort data by date, then move to new cell

Christine,

this macro below works well with the sample data.
Code:
Sub sorting()
Dim Rng As Range, c As Range, i As Long
Set Rng = Range("A:A").SpecialCells(xlCellTypeConstants, xlNumbers)
For Each c In Rng
i = (i + 1) Mod 2
If i = 0 Then
With c.Resize(, 15)
.Copy .Offset(-1, 17)
.ClearContents
End With
End If
Next
End Sub

How it works:
1. Takes all those cells in column A of the active sheet that contain numbers. (Dates are actually numbers, only formatted to look like dates.)
2. In a loop, it takes every second cell of the set of cells selected in Step #1.
3. Takes a 15 cells wide region starting with the cell selected in Step #2, and copies it to the region starting with the cell positioned one row up and 17 columns to the right.
4. Deletes the content of the original 15 cells wide region.

Caution:
1. If there are any numbers in column A besides dates, then the algorithm is wrong and the macro will fail.
2. If the dataset in the second date line is wider than 15 cells wide then the rest will remain in place. But the macro can be easily updated, just change the Resize line.
3. Don't run it twice on the same worksheet.
4. Always make a backup copy of your data before running the macro, because it is not Undo-able.

The column heading in Win 10 File Explorer is 'Date'. But which one?

I've always been used in XP to the default being 'Date modified', but it seems that here it's Date created? Several re-saves have left 'Date' unchanged.

Running W7 Pro 64, latest updates (12/15/2011.)

Apparently since the last update(s) any folder opened in Windows Explorer sorts by date. I use detail view because I'm used to it. I can click View|Sort by|File Name and the contents of the folder are sorted "correctly" (at least what I think is correctly) but if I change the folder name, the sort mode reverts to date.

Is there a single setting in Explorer or registry that defines the default sort-by mode? Is there something I could have changed that would have changed the sort mode?

TIA,

Answer:Windows Explorer always sorts by date

Hey Ray

Try right clicking in some empty space in explorer.
A menu will appear- choose sort by -> More
Deselect date modified and see if that helps

Does anyone know, or know where to find the rules governing the last modified date on files when using windows explorer to move files around.
It appears to me that sometimes it changes it and sometimes not.

I turned last Date accessed on but it is showing me accessing the file just by opening the folder not by actually viewing the file. How do I fix this to only show if I click the file itself?

Answer:Last Date accessed in windows explorer

actually it appears its only doing this the first time I open a folder after I turned on last date accessed in cmd.

It kind of annoying that it is changing all my last date accessed to today or whenever I first open the folder rather then first time I view the file. Anyway to change this?

I have downloaded images from my digital camera onto my computer. Unfortunately the date and time was set incorrectly on my camera and so the 'Date Picture Taken' is obviously shown incorrectly in Windows Explorer.

Is there a way of changing the 'Date Picture Taken' in Windows XP?

Answer:Changing the 'Date Picture Taken' in Windows Explorer

Hi PinguJohn,

Do you mean the Creation date, as seen when you right click any file and choose Properties?

I have many newspaper clippings in MY Documents. They are variously formatted (TXT, WORD, and PDF). Using Windows Explorer in Windows XP, I know exactly how to view these documents according to their date created or date modified. But how do I view these documents according to their date of publication? If I upgrade to VISTA, will I be able to do this?

1) There must be a way to attach "date of publication" as a property to TXT, Word, and PDF files.

2) There must be a way to view files chronologically in Windows Explorer - not according to their date of creation or modification but according to their date of publication.

Can someone please help?! Maybe someone writing a dissertation with lots of historical sources can feel my pain. I've been playing with MS Word Properties, and trying to create custom attributes but so far I still haven't been able to figure out how to a) correctly format a new attribute for Date of Publication or b) search for that customized attribute in Windows Explorer.

In short, I want to see all of my files in the order that they were published so that I can have a "timeline of events" based on saved newspaper clippings.

Answer:Windows Explorer: Seeing Files According to Date of Publication

Hello Rabindra,

Welcome to vista forums!!!!!

Yes, you should be able to see your files in order of date of publication. Once you find all the files, you can right click on the taskbar in windows explorer and choose to view that date of publication. If you want to edit these, double click on the date and change it...

Im 99% sure this works. I will look around online a little more.

Hope this helps,
Ben

I just wanted to share a fix I have for a problem I was experiencing with windows explorer.

The problem is clicking on a directory with a bunch of files in it (that has been set to sort by date as default) is painfully slow , like 3 or 4 secs. If the directory is set to sort alphabetically then every thing is ok.

after much pain I found the problem to be down to my anti-virus solution, I was using Panda cloud anti-virus. Once uninstalled the problem is removed. clicking on the same directory opens it instantaneously. hope this saves someone from the same frustration I had.

Answer:date sorting in windows explorer slow

Panda Cloud is quite annoying and requires lots of fixes and improvement...when i used it previously it used to say that i am not connected to the internet whereas i was. But indeed Panda has a quite good detection ratio.
