Studio 1558 won't wake from sleep or boot

Question: Studio 1558 won't wake from sleep or boot

I am unable to boot or wake up my Studio 1558 laptop. Here is everything that may be relevant to the issue.

I upgraded from Win7 to Win10 a few months ago.
The only issue I had after the upgrade was that coming out of sleep mode required a reboot a few times (but not every time).
About two weeks ago I put the computer in Sleep mode.
When I pressed power to wake it up:

The keyboard lit up
I hear the fan start
I hear the optical drive engage
I get a black screen.
I do not hear any beeps.

Pressing the power button again immediately shuts everything down.

Here is what I've tried to get a response:

Removed battery and AC then held down power button to discharge. Result: nothing.
Pressed Fn+F1 with an external monitor attached. Result: nothing.
Pressed D while powering. Result: Screen flashed different colors but didn't boot.
Pressed Fn+F5 while powering: Result: nothing
Created a Windows10 installation CD (on another computer) and tried to reboot so I could run Repair your computer. Result: nothing except now...

I can't eject the CD from the optical drive
Pressing D no longer flashes the screen

So I've tried everything I can find. Any help would be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My husband and I have the same identical laptops. His wakes from sleep mode by pressing a button on the keyboard or moving the mouse.  Mine does not.  I can only wake it by pressing the power button.  I have reset to default power settings and it still doesn't work.  I have gone through keyboard properties and have found nothing that says anything about sleep or wake.  The power button wires have severed (which is normal for this junky laptop, or so I hear) and so in order to turn it on and off, I have to press the wires together.  In order to avoid doing this often, I wanted to put my computer in sleep mode and be able to wake it up with the keyboard.  But, as mentioned above, I am unable to.

When booting up my Dell Studio 1558 laptop running windows 7, as the computer goes through the startup procedure just before it should START WINDOWS 7 it hangs up and only shows a curser blinking in the upper left corner and it will not boot into windows. F8 doesn?t boot it and F12 runs only pre-boost system assessment build 4124 (all shows OK ; it takes about 1 hour) but don?t continue when any key is pressed to Booting Diagnostic Utility partition. Advanced Boot Options Window doesn't show up as well. It's not clear how to make Windows 7 work.

I have a Studio 1558, originally windows 7, upgraded to 10 a year or so ago.  When I try to boot it makes it to the password login screen, I successfully enter password then screen just goes blank. I ran diagnostics and everything passed. I tried the disconnect battery and power cable trick, no go.  Any idea what else I can try?  Thx!

I have a dell studio 1558 i3 core processor 4gb ram 500gb hard drive windows 7 home premium.

When doing a regular virus check I noticed that in the full scan my laptop was just abruptly shutting off. So I did a search and several people had issues with their laptop over heating. So, I downloaded Speed Fan to see what my laptop temperature was running at.

Just leaving it sit, and not doing anything my laptop temps are:

HD0: 111F
Temp1: 80F
Temp2: 32F:
Core 0: 108-118F
Core 1: 100-102F

I do not see a drop below that.

If I put on a movie that's stored on my hard drive it will jump between 125-137F. I've had the laptop about 4 years. It is probably dusty inside no doubt ( I have 5 cats and live in a rural area), but looking inside I don't see a terrible amount of dust, but then it's hard to see through the vent holes at all.

If I take out the battery the fan seems to run less and the temps stay around 106. But even watching a movie the temps spike up to the same temps.

I've tired blowing out the fan from what I can do with an air can. But this doesn't seem to cure the issue.

I've looked in the System Event Log and for the times it shut off, I did get an event 37. And this was the error message:
The speed of processor 0 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report.

Just wanting some input as to if this a fan issue, whether it needs to be just cleaned or what.... Read more

The light at the power adapter is on.
I removed the battery and power adapter, and held the power button for 30 seconds.
I held down "D" and the power button, and a grey screen comes on for about 1 second and goes off again, and then keeps doing the same for as long as I have the "D" and power button pressed.
There is only bar of light on the main battery.
The laptop is about 7 years old. I'm about to buy a new one when this one died. I do need to access some documents on it, though.
Any ideas?

Answer:studio 1558 not turning on.

Retrieving documents on the hard drive is easy if you can remove it.
Then you need a USB-SATA adapter to connect the hard drive to a working PC.

So I have a studio 1558 and when you shut it down it will not start up unless you completely remove power ( AC and battery) it is headless (no lid) but this problem has been happening since before it became headless i have rewired the power button and this even happens when you manually activate the power from the motherboard, the power button works 100% if you do not shut it down

Recently I have been getting the annoying blue screen and crashes on my one month old Dell Studio 15.

Attached are the minidumps from windows. I have ran whocrashed and it has not identified the issue, other that it points to a driver.

I have not upgraded any drivers since getting the laptop new from dell, a little more than a month ago. I contacted their support and they were absolutely useless.

But I did run their diagnostics immediately after the last crash and it came through clean. I ran the memory diagnostic 5 times, and the complete system diagnostic once, including the extended drive test. All were clean and the tests overall ran for 3.5-4 hours.

I even ran the driver verifier yesterday and it did not detect anything. Since I do not know what do do with it, I turned it off for now.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone

Answer:BSOD on Dell Studio 15 1558

All three of your .dmp files are reporting the same cause... ntkrnlmp.exe.. As this is a core system file, we know that this is not the problem... Make sure that you have driver verifier enabled... this wlll stress the drivers, and should result in a BSOD... NOTE: It may take up to 36 hours to do, so be patient.. upload the new .dmp files when you get them...

I need help. I was given a Dell Studio 1558 laptop, it has a slot drive for CD/DVD's and it does not work, so I cant install an OS on it. It gives an error message at the black screen...PXE error, Operating system not found.. I bought a new HD and still get the same error.
Please help me.. I need this laptop to be working for my job.

Answer:Help with Dell Studio 1558 laptop

you could always pickup an external USB CD/DVD drive, and install the OS using that. Or depending on what OS you are using you may be able to download it online, and install from a USB flash drive

I've posted about this before, but considered it resolved when i ordered a new motherboard.  Here's my issue.
I have a Dell Studio 1558, 6GB Windows 7HP 64bit.  It's out of warranty.  My initial issue was a graphics card failure, as it displayed distorted graphics and eventually just stopped displaying anything.  By distorted I mean, bands of bright colors, checkerboard patterns, randonm characters displayed.  the picture was still bright, so i figured it was the GPU dying.
I have replaced the motherboard and the problem remains.  machine powers up, optical drive and HDD both start up, screen lights, keyboard backlight lights, but nothing is displayed on the screen, no bios, no start-up, no system beep.  i have tried pressing the power button and "d" at the same time and the screen flashes white, then runs through the RGB flashes, so it's not the screen.  I was able to place my HDD in an enclosure and access both partitions from my desktop, so the HDD hasn't failed.
Is there anything else i can do to test it to narrow the problem?

Answer:Studio 1558 black screen

Hi Guys,
Dell studio 1558 is a complete failed product as it has known issue of GPU heating up and frequent shutdown. if you are still under warranty go and get it replace, test 1000 times again playing video games if it fails again then send it back again n again until ur warrnty get exhausted. I have same dell studio 1558 and it has started going off on , frequent shutdown, graphic driver failure, color bars all related to GPU. I contacted tech team they told me clearly they dont have h/w part to replace as they dont manufacture it any more so buy it from local h/w shop and get it fix urself..!
so guys pay someone to procure repaired motherboard from mkt n take risk otherwise throw it in bin...
good luck

I recently found a Dell Studio 1558 running Windows 7 Home Premium in the trash, and it works fine. I would like to do a full system reset to restore the laptop to factory condition. How can this be done? I have already tried pressing F8 on the startup screen, but all it would do is stop the loading bar. Then I tried leaving it for a while, and after 20 minutes it had done nothing. Many retries later I am still where I started.

Just a note, the computer keeps telling me that I need to get "genuine Windows Software" and other similar messages.

Answer:Resetting my Dell Studio 1558

Windows is not properly activated on this computer. You will need to get a retail copy of Windows 7 that can be properly activated, and do a clean Windows install. Go to Dell's support website to get the Windows 7 drivers. If you can see a Windows activation key sticker on the case, you might be able to use this site:

I am getting BSOD on my dell Studio 1558, I used to get this very frequently before upgrading graphics driver. After the upgrade the frequency reduced a lot. Yesterday it crashed again with BSOD, I followed instructions in post: and traced the problem to Rapport software. Uninstalled it.. and it was fine for some time. today, Again it crashed...

This time again i enabled verifier, and waited till it crashed. Attaching the dump with verifier on. Some help to analyze this is much appreciated.

Is Windows 7 . . .
- x64 ?
- re installed using DVD provided by dell
- an OEM version

- What is the age of system (hardware)? 171 days
- What is the age of OS installation : around 3 months

Also, a thing to note is laptop heats a lot in touch pad area and bottom. CPU temperatures are around 56-78 C.

Please help.

I just got a refurbished MB (4DKNR - ATI HD5470) because the previous one was no longer working due to the well known boiling issue with the GPU.
Now, I assembled this one and the LCD shows up red lines, I guess the video below shows much better than any words:
Now, here is what I did so far:
1) I plugged in an external HDMI monitor and it is working fine
2) I checked again that the cable that goes to the MB is well plugged in and it is.
3) I tried to bend the cable in multiple points, no changes.
4) I tried to press 'D' and turn on the laptop, all the colors displayed on the laptop are perfect, no red lines.
At this point, I suspect the port on the MB where the LCD ribbon cable is connected might be the root cause of the problem, but I wait for your confirmation.
We know it is not the GPU because the external monitor works fine.
BTW, almost I forgot to mention... the webcam is no longer detected and it was working perfectly fine before I changed the MB.
As additional info, this laptop stays always with its lid open, it's used as a desktop, so there has never been any kind of stress on the lid or the cables.
What do you think?
If I have to return the MB to the supplier I need to prove  that the port is the culprit.
Thank you

Answer:Studio 1558 - Horizontal red lines

While it could be the connector on the board, it could equally well be a damaged cable - that would likely be next to change before you condemn the board.

I have a Dell Studio 1558 that will not boot.
When plugged in to the adapter, with our without battery, the white light on the laptop by the power port lights up for a second and then turns off. The adapter led is blue, and stays blue if unplugged.
When I press the power button (with/without battery, with adapter), the light on the power button turns on for a second, and the fan starts. If I hold the button for a second the fan starts and I can hear a click that sounds like the start of a boot but both stop after less than a second.
I've tried removing the adapter and battery and holding the power button for 30seconds (and one minute), and re-doing the boot steps again with and without battery.
I opened the back and re-seated the memory, put the battery back in, and plugged in the adapter, and pushed the power button. No power button light and fan doesn't turn on, but the adapter port light now blinks orange/white for a few seconds before it goes off again.
Took battery back off, and pressed power button. adapter port light blinks white for a second or two, then it turns off again. Still no power button light, still no fan...
So worse than before? Are there additional things I can try?

Answer:Dell Studio 1558 will not start

Hi MISC3389,
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed?
Something is causing the short circuit on the system and hence the issue.
Three components could be isolated to cause this issue: Adapter, DC port and motherboard.
So, try another adapter. If the issue is the same, then replace the dc port - you would need this part -
If the issue still persists, then the motherboard needs to be replaced.
Presuming there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call -
Personally, I would suggest you to invest your money in a new machine than to repair this machine.

Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

Is it possible to change from an i3 350M to the i7 740QM
I bought an i7 740QM to see if it would work but after installing it, the laptop would not load, the backlight on the keyboard came on and the hard drive spun, but no signs of life on the screen and when i pressed the power button the laptop turned straight back off.
I checked the web and the i7 740QM did come in 1558's and from what i can see the is only one motherboard for the 1558. Am I wrong?
Or is it the BIOS which is stopping it?

When I put the i3 back into the laptop the computer booted no problem.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Upgrading from i3 to i7 in a Dell Studio 1558

I know this is an old topic, but I've just done what you're asking about. I have a 1558 with the A12 bios that was an I3 and upgraded it to an I7. The important thing to know here is that the Dual Core I(x) processors for this model have a built in graphics chip on the CPU. The Quad Core processors do not. You cannot upgrade the Dual Core motherboard with a Quad Core CPU. You end up with no graphics processor and no boot.

My machine had the I3-330m 2.13GHZ CPU. The appropriate upgrade for me was the Intel i7 640M 2.8GHz 4MB QS ES Q4C9 which I purchased and installed. It is a significant performance upgrade because you're upgrading both the CPU and the GPU at the same time. There was only a 1 degree Celsius increase in heat with the new CPU and my machine is running just fine.

Disassembling and reassembling your 1556/57/58 to replace your CPU is easy with the following youtube video:

Hey everyone,

So I run a Dell studio 1558. About a month ago I got a virus which corrupted my computer pretty bad, which eventually turned into the computer to stop booting up the operating system. I tried making a repair disc on another computer, but that made matters worse as well as that the recovery partition is corrupt/not working! Meaning I can't find the option to revert to factory settings. Then I called Dell to send me recovery disks (which when I received was a windows reinstallation cd and a drivers cd), and I tried doing that, but they didn't give me any instructions at all and refuse to help me without paying them $120 or some absurd amount since I am out of warranty.

So now I'm stuck in a serious issue I don't know how to fix. I tried using the reinstallation CD that Dell sent to wipe the main drive completely, but it gives me some weird option to load from one of two Windows 7 operating systems. It also shows me this weird BIOS utility screen every time I log on, which hasn't shown before when my computer was functioning properly. (I have included pictures to show what I'm talking about)

I really need some help here. I'm not sure what to do at all in this case! If anyone can tell me how I can fix my recovery partition or make it so my computer functions properly again, I would be very grateful

There are several posts on this topic, but none seem to address this question.

Can I keep using my laptop, which has been 'nagging'me for quite some time to replace the battery. The laptop is really old and is obviously out of warranty, but I have found it still suits my needs well enough. currently however I cannot get it to run for more than 10 seconds as it seems tot draw its power from the dead battery and not directly from the adapter (which works fine). In all its infinite wisdom the designers decided that the laptop can only run with the battery in the laptop, so taking it out is not an option.
Can I keep using my laptop or do I really have to buy a new battery?
Does anyone know of a workaround?

Hello and sorry for my english
Yesterday i tried upgrade bios in my dell studio 1558, from version A05 to A06. I downloaded right file, extracted it, and run. It started without problems, but in the middle of programming 57 block from 83, Windows(7 x86_64) hanged and didin't react to keyboard or mouse, after one hour waiting and looking in frozen screen I deciced to remove battery and unplug AC. When I plugin AC and power on my laptop, dvd-rom starts, hdd spins, but lcd are black (backlight not turning on).
I know that this situation is bad, very bad and probably I must call to service and they send a man with new motherboard (I bought laptop 1.5 month ago :/).
Today I'm googling and I was found few pages where was written something about bios recovery in dell laptops. One page is at(on??) this forum:
I want ask, is it safety and works?
Someone wrote that it helped him with 1557... and maybe help me with 1558.
My Studio 1558 has: i5 430m, ddr3 4GB, ati 5470, phoenix bios

Answer:Studio 1558 BIOS Recovery

IT WORKS my dell BACK TO LIFE, i'm happy, veeeery happy
this is shortcut version of topic on(at??) this forum
Only what i did was download bios archive, extract it, then run 1558_A06.exe file, from temp dir i copied BIOS1.WPH, renemed it do BIOS.WPH, then i used program from link in topic, copied to dir with it my wph file, then run as admin file WINCRIS.EXE. It format my usb-drive. Boot from it my dell, wait few seconds, and works, works :D
P.S. sorry for the chaotic writing, but I'm excited that it was successful and works and do not have to notify the service :)

I have a studio 1558. I left it open overnight and it had turned off the next day. I pressed the power button and can hear the fan and DVD drive activate. I tried plugging it into an external monitor, that did not work.
I tried removing the battery and power, pushing the power button for 60 seconds and starting again with only AC power but that did not change anything.
I removed the RAM and started it. It made two beeps repeatedly, so it recognizes missing RAM.
I ran the LCD test and it displayed all of the solid colors on the screen.
I do not know what I can try at this point. Is the motherboard toast?

Got a refurb Studio 1558 that was having lockups that didn't generate any dumps or error reports, just power faults and unclean shutdown on reboot. Wiped it and did a clean install of Win7, installed all the drivers, but problems persisted. Flashed to most recent BIOS, started getting bluescreen errors and minidumps in addition to the lockups (may I was actually able to get them now?). Those are attached.

Drivers are the most recent available up on Dell's Site, most recent graphics on ATI discrete card. Windows Update is current, also running MSE as AV. At one point I thought Creative X-FI MB Software was causing problems, but uninstalling had no effect. Memtest did 10 passes, no errors. Primed and used other burn ins for over 12 hours each, all calculations came back clean. Lockups tend to happen while playing flash videos, although it's happened twice while gaming, three times during browsing.

Going to get in touch with Dell in a bit and see what they say about possible hardware problems. As far as I can tell only ntoskrnl and ntkrnlmp are throwing errors, not any drivers, so I might have some kind of odd hardware errors somewhere.

Answer:Studio 1558, BSODs, lockups

Hello Welcome to SF !!

The Dump wasn't that helpful because seems like it didn't record the rouge driver.

I would recommend to Run Hard Drive Diagnostic and Memory Diagnostic

If this turns out clean then i would recommend to Run the Driver Verifier here is the link to enable it.

Using Driver Verifier to identify issues with Drivers

I have a problem upgrading a Studio 1558 laptop with i3 350m processor to an i5 430m which was working perfectly fine on another Studio 1558. When I switch the processors I get two beeps (which should indicate a ram problem but the ram is the same). Any ideas why this is happening?
Thank you for your time!

Answer:Studio 1558 CPU upgrade issue

Two beeps means no memory is being recognized.  Have you tried reinstalling the memory module(s)?  If the problem doesn't occur with the i3 but does with the i5, you've likely a bad memory controller - which is part of the CPU.

Hi all,
I received my laptop two days ago and for two days i got a weird, glitchy BSOD. I tried updating the graphics card drivers and BIOS yesterday but today, unfortunately, it happened again, the same weird glitch looking blue page and then a restart.
Attached are the two minidumps. Hope any of you can help me.

Answer:Dell Studio 1558 - BSOD once per day

The dmp(s) point to ntkrpamp.exe or ntoskrnl.exe as the probable cause. We know this is not the case, as these are core OS files, and will definitely not cause a BSOD. They are just the default files the debuggers blame when they can't see a better cause. Enable driver verifier using the following procedure..

- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

Hey Guys,

I just installed Windows 8 RTM on my Dell Studio 1558.I have been at it for a few hours now and I must have had atleast 20 BSODs. Earlier it was the Display Driver I guess and got the latest AMD Driver( I have AMD Radeon HD 5470). Which i guess solved to a bit. But now i have very strange BSODs. Particular when i try to adjust screen brightness with the "Fn+F4/F5". Its not a coincidence. Checked 5 times. That would be very very strange i think. Also when i try to take my laptop off the power and run on battery. It crashes once again. And like 3 out 4 times it crashes when i do that.

Guys i am really interested in making my Windows 8 machine stable. Can someone please help with where do i start with. Like do i post the Event logs or something else. I am quite tech savvy and was out of windows scenario for a while.

Ok! here is the problem , My brother called me over to see what is wrong with his computer. He told that the screen is messed up and I determined that he needs a new screen. after maybe a month in storage he gets the money up, and I went to turn on the computer and it would not start(the screen has not been installed yet). I checked the power connections and everything was fine. there was one little thing, as I took the power cord out, I notice that the LCD for the power blinked. Any ideas of what went wrong.

I think the GPU crash and so I have to remove my mother board. I sad because it's a beautiful computer and I have from 6 years...
I would like have your opinion please ?
Sorry for bad English

Answer:Dell studio 1558 video default

Hi GAB03,
Does the system overheat? Were there any bluescreens / system crashes? Does this happen with or without the adapter connected?
You could run the LCD built in self test - Turn off the system - press and hold the "D" key and Power button to turn on the system - it should initiate the LCD test - see this link for more info -
Since the issue is the same on the external monitor as well, I suppose the video card is failing and hence you see the distorted video. And the motherboard needs to be replaced to resolve the issue.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
You could write me a private message with the service tag, your name and contact details and we can help book a paid service and replace the parts, if the required parts are in stock, or for faster communication, you could contact us via Twitter - @dellcarespro
Personally, I would suggest you to invest your money on a new machine than to repair this system, as it would not support newer technology.
Keep us updated.

I need to do a full OS reinstall for my Studio 1558 to Windows 7, but have lost the CDs that came with it. Looking at the Dell support pages, that ISO is no longer available. Is there any way that I can get hold of them? I have the licence key (it's on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop), so don't need to worry about that.

Has anyone experienced this weird charging issue?? Is the problem related to my power adapter??

Answer:Dell Studio 1558 Charging Problem

I presume your system does not power on anymore. If it is so, then read on:
So, as per the video, I see that the light on the power adapter goes off when connected to the system.
There could be 3 causes of this, in this order:
Power adapter - Test the system with another power adapter and see if it works.
DC Port - the port where you connect the adapter might be shorted out and needs to be replaced - this is the part you need -
Motherboard - which is my primary suspected part, if another adapter and dc port does not work, then the motherboard needs to be replaced.
If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call -
You could also choose to purchase the parts from the 3rd party seller - link above.
Personally, I would suggest you to invest your money in a new machine than to repair this old system.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

I recently upgraded my laptop Dell Studio 1558  to windows 10. I have following issue, I am unable to control screen brightness. Unable to use apps. also some random system crash ... last 24 hours my machine crashed more than 150 times .. I tried to re-install and tried all drivers. I hope the issue from video driver .. any suggestion ? please help me to solve this issue.

Answer:Studio 1558, Unsupported Windows 10 upgrade

Hello!  So first off this computer hasn't been tested to work with Windows 10.  I would normally say try the Windows 8.x drivers but it looks like it wasn't tested for Windows 8.x either.  What I would do is go to the ATI website if you have the ATI card in your laptop, and download the newest drivers for that.  Also go to Intel's website and see if you can't download the drivers for your chipset etc.  There is a possibility that your hardware is too 'old' and is no longer supported for windows 10 via Intel/AMD/anyone else.
The link I provided has all the drivers from Dell for Windows 7, and from there you can get the chipset names etc and see if you can't find them on the manufacturers website.

same thing. anyway, i need help. i recently came in to possession of this ****e hole of a computer, and i am frustrated to no end. not too long after i got it, it started popping up hard drive error messages. it started blue screen core dumping every 30 minutes. i gave in and spent the money on a new hard drive and it seemed to be working OK. but then i tried to play World of tanks. i was getting about 5 frames a minute and it took me 10 minutes just to find the close button. i dismissed it as a poorly optimized game and tried TF2. same thing. i was getting suspicious. i then opened chess titans. a ****ing 3d chess game. HOW INTENSIVE CAN IT BE??!!?? same ****ing thing. i don't have a huge amount of experience with this kind of issue, but i know something is wrong. all the drivers are up to date as far as i can see, so does anyone know what is wrong?

any help is EXTREMELY welcome.

thanks in advance!

Answer:Satan incarnate... or Dell studio 1558

Did you get the drivers from Windows Update, Toshiba's site, or each individual component manufacturer's website? You should get them all individually (option 3).

Did you make sure you installed your GPU drivers (i'm assuming integrated Intel drivers)?

I have a Dell Studio 1558 Laptop.
I installed Windows 8 Pro.I'm facing few issues regarding driver compatibility.

Dell 365 Bluetooth driver is not installing; but I can use the Dell wireless bluetooth mouse. In the mouse, scroll isn't working; connection drops and after moving the mouse, it gets connected.
Synaptics Touchpad driver is installed, Gestures for scroll (Vertical/horizontal) are working, Touchpad icon is shown in notification area; but after double-clicking Touch pad settings is NOT opening; I tried via Control Panel/mouse settings/Dell Touch Pad Settings also.
ST Microelectronics DE351DL Motion Sensor Driver  is NOT working.

Will Dell be releasing Windows 8 drivers for Studio 1558 Laptops? If yes, When? Thanks

I have a new laptop (about 2 months old):
Dell Studio 1558
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, OEM

From day one I had this annoying problem - the system reboots with no BSOD, while surfing, while using apps or just when idle.
To make a long story short - after chatting with dell, I replaced a faulty hard drive a few days ago, and on the HDD came a freshly installed OS

I only installed Office 2007, and let the computer to run. After 24 hours, while idle, the computer rebooted without any dmp file - only an event "windows did not shut down properly" appeared in the event log
I spoke to Dell once again, and they mentioned something about a motherboard replacement, but they want to send me a tech before taking this step. I really don't want to replace the motherboard, because they are not sure what is the problem and I have a feeling that they will replace it and the problem will persist

I decided to wait, and try, with your help - to identify the problem

I have monitored the temperature of the CPU, GPU and HDD - no problem there

I ran verifier for 24 hours, and the computer crashed twice - but this time it did leave BSOD and .dmp files. The first crash was while shutting down the computer, and the second crash occured while word + powerpoint were running

The Zip file includes the dmp files zipped while using your BSOD Dump & System File Collection app

Thank You!

Answer:Dell Studio 1558 - Random reboots

Random reboots like that are most often caused by hardware. A bad motherboard could cause that, and PSU is another likely cause.

I did run the dumps, looking for a software cause. The dumps seem to support the notion that your USB mouse is having problems. Could you remove the mouse and see what happens?

Since you don't even have to send your laptop in for repair, I would recommend you just go with the tech. Make a system image, though, in case he decides to wipe your drive.

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

It is almost certain bad drivers are not the cause, but just for the heck of it, install some updated ones.

My laptop screen just suddenly stopped displaying anything, there's no dell logo on startup, I got a 5-3-2-1 beep sequence ( although, the 5 was a sort of melody that went on 3 times before the ordinary 3-2-1 beeping ) I've been browsing forum after forum and none of the solutions are helping. When I switch the power on I can hear the fan turning on like normally but screen stays blank. Please may you help me

Answer:Dell studio 1558 screen black

Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory modules.
Try again - if you still get the same multiple beep errors, the mainboard is toast - given the age of the system, start shopping for a replacement system.

Out of the blue i got stuck on a BSOD, after that my screen stays black.
This system was running Windows 7 for 1,5 year. So i thought a driver conflict and preformed a clean install.
To accomplish this i had to use a VGA monitor as i have a black screen.
A couple of times it helped removing the battery and push the power button for 60 seconds to get my screen back.
When hitting the D key when turning on the laptop i get RGB color output on the screen, that confirms the screen is still working.

After installing the AMD driver from the DELL Support site it asks me to restart. After the restart i get the BSOD.
When i go in safe-mode and remove the driver from the device manager, the BSOD is gone.

I tried this BSOD Fix but it does not work in my situation.

Windows has all the updates, and i installed the latest chipset driver form the DELL Support site.

System info:
Dell Studio 1558 Servicetag: D6RJ8M1
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1
For the clean install i did not use the recovery, i preformed a clean install.

I assume both problems; black screen and bsod are connected.

Hello all,
My Dell studio 1558 laptop is now not working due to onboard graphics card issue.
I want to see -
1) if I can use the LCD with any other embedded boards like Raspberry pi or any other microcontroller. Can I have the pin details of the LCD?
2) Is it possible for me to use the Intel i7-720QM(1.6GHz) Mobile CPU with any desktop based motherboard? If yes can you suggest it?
Thanks and regards

Answer:Can we use the LCD, Processor and RAM of Dell Studio 1558 with any other mother board?

1.  Check with the manufacturer of the display panel for details;  the answer is, likely not but it's worth checking.
2.  No.  Mobile CPUs work only with notebook boards - not desktop.  And this generation CPU is almost eight years old, so you'll need to reach back quite a ways to find a system that will still take it.

I bought this machine in July 2010 and I have been having BSOD and Black screen issues ever since. I have been on the phone with DELL 4 times. Two times they had me run a hardware test and the test always comes back with no issues.

I have attached a DUMP file as well as a mini dump file from a recent system crash (BSOD.) When the machine goes Black and reboots, I get a mini dump, but no full dump file.

The Dell support folks are all over the map on this issue and have given me no satisfaction. On e time they told me it was a virus and they would charge me $129 to clean the machine. I am running a good virus scanner, and I am quite sure it is not a virus.

Another time, they told me to restore my machine to the original factory system, but I am reluctant to do that, since I have donwloaded a lot of software and customized the machine. But i could not see anything on my computer.

Hi, I had problems with my fans the other day on my Dell Studio 1558 laptop, the fans were'nt working so the laptop was shutting down after about 10 mins use, so stupidly I decided to try to restore the laptop to factory settings while I was having these problems to see if it would restart the fans, but halfway through the restore the laptop would be so hot it shut down.
So I fixed the fan problem and thought great I can do the restore now, but its been a nightmare. Since I restored:
-I can only log in as Administrator but don't know the password, so I restart in safe mode and change it so I can log in.
-I have no internet access, well I have limited access.
- Everytime I start up Windows I get 'Failed to connect to a windows service'
-My CD/DVD rom won't work, it has a yellow symbol on it, but have ran diagnosis and that says its ok. I have a restore disc but can't use it. It will take discs but makes loud noises when it spins.
-USB stick was working but not any more, I was trying to download files from another laptop to put on mine.
I hope someone on hear has had a problem like this and can help me?
Im running Windows 7 HE 64 bit.

Answer:Studio 1558. Missing Drivers,No Internet after Restore

I'm having trouble finding the windows 7 product key on Dell Studio 1558 laptop. I'm trying to format my drive by reinstall windows. I did install the Windows 7  that is not from OEM and now I'm planning to sell this laptop without giving away my Window 7 Installer product key, so I'm planning to reinstall windows 7 by OEM windows 7. Is it possible? Or did I just replace the Window 7 product key? Can someone help me in this case
Thank you,

Answer:Locating OEM Window 7 product key on Dell Studio 1558?

Depends on who the buyer is, their technical expertise and how you format the hard drive...
If you don't select format during the Windows setup there will be a Windows.old folder and the buyer can get all your old files from it.
If you just use the Windows format, the buyer can install recovery software which can get by the Windows format. It'll take a little work but it can be done.
The customer can obtain the product key if they install Belarc Advisor but that should be only for the current version of Windows installed, a determined user might be able to get the old key if you don't format and there is a Windows.old format. The old OS can be restored from the Windows.old folder for instance and BSelarc Advisor can then be used.
Your best bet is to use DBAN and completely wipe the hard drive. Only an expert in data recovery would be able to recover any data from the hard drive, it would probably be costly, time consuming and a pretty difficult job if DBAN is used. - I don't think many people would dedicate the time and resources to recover your data as statistically from a home consumer DBAN wiped system the probability of finding anything of any use to justify the time spent is probably low. For the not so through Windows format, maybe some "baddies" would have a quick look at it to see if they could find anything useful. However it is probably likely to go to a user who just want... I have a Dell Studio 1558 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD5470 graphics card on it. Yesterday, the computer crashed suddenly and started mentioning ATI driver crash, soon after which bluescreen errors followed - mentioning a failure of the atimkdag.sys file.
Then, the display got discoloured, showing random dots, blue vertical lines and discolorations and gibberish characters here and there. I am not being able to load windows as it immediately ends up crashing with always the same bluescreen error.
What bugs me is that, right from the point of start of booting (when the dell logo shows) and after which you can get the boot options etc, all the time, the screen is discolored and gibberish - even inside BIOS, and the basic diagnostics thing that Dell offers.
It is not a LCD problem since I tried attaching a separate monitor using a VGA cable and the exact same problem is reflected on this external monitor also. Also, if I load  a Linux Live Cd, say ubuntu, then it loads and at least shows the desktop, but the discolorations are always there, so it isn't a software problem either - I had also tried restoring to factory settings and the problem is still there.
I think my ATI card is damaged. In that case, is there any option to recover/repair - like disabling the ATI card and working using the onboard intel graphics chipset if any -  or do I have to replace the motherboard, since the ATI cards are as far as I know, soldered and fixed permanently to th... Answer:Studio 1558 ATI Radeon HD5470 hardware problem

A good place to start is with the Dell diagnostics, which will test the video chip.  If your system has a CPU with onboard video (note that most of the first-generation i7s DO NOT, but the i5 and i3 do), you should be able to remove the ATI drivers and run with just the Intel video.
Otherwise, the mainboard needs to be replaced;  in the US, the cost is in the $200-250 range for a board (add whatever labor charge would be - another $US 100 -- for the total cost.

I had the battery replaced in my studio 1558 recently and since then each time I use it after an hour or two of usage the fan comes on at full speed and remains on constantly and the power/charge indicator light alternates constantly between blinking orange and steady white. If i restart the machine i get a message during boot up that the system doesn't recognise the battery and it will not be charged and the only way i can restore normal operation is to shut down completely and restart. Despite the issue and the battery message, the battery is actually charging and appears to hold the charge fine but i am worried that there is some other issue or that it is an issue with the new battery and it will eventually malfunction completely. The repair shop who replaced the battery have taken the machine back and checked it and said they can find nothing wrong with it and have not seen the fan and light issue happen while the machine was in their shop. Can anyone shed any light on this for me??

As far as I know the 1558 series was issued with several different mobo types. I own one of these laptops and I would like to buy a new motherboard for it. Are these different motherboards interchangebles, or I have to look for the same type I had. If they are which one is the better?

Need bios unlocked for Dell Studio 1558 Laptop. Its password protected as soon as I enter the bios.

The clients son set it up and forgot the password. Sound, wifi, and networking are disabled in the bios unfortunately for some odd reason.

If any of you can help me with that that would be grand.

Answer:Need bios unlocked for Dell Studio 1558 Laptop

Back in the day, if you pulled the main battery and cmos battery for long enough, all would be reset in the world...

Ninja Edit: It might take a bit of disassembly to find the CMOS battery, and then you should hope it isn't soldered to the board. May also be worth seeing if the Dell tech manual has provisions for a reset jumper you can short.

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

I've had this issue, on and off, for a long time now. It's really starting to irritate me.

I have Windows 7 installed. My provider is Talk Talk.

Sometimes the connection will be lost altogether and when I try to reconnect it says "unable to connect" and I have to wait 5/10 mins until the laptop connects it's self again automatically.

Other times, the signal strength shows as full (in the bottom right) but a yellow triangle appears with an exclamation mark in it and the status reads "Currently connected to Talk Talk 388380 No internet access". It stays like this for several minutes, then goes back to normal!?

I've recently had fiber optic broadband installed, but I don't think this is the issue as it was happening before.

Even when the internet is working, the connection speed is really poor; YouTube videos constantly buffer, even on low quality.

I've plugged in the ethernet cable today and it appears to work fine, so I think it must be an issue with the laptop.

Can anyone help??

Subject: Dell Studio Laptop 15" bought in July 2010. i3 -350M. Nothing altered except RAM (bought new and tested) and replaced stock HD with SSD 10 months ago. Never had any trouble except around 4 years ago, it would overheat and shut down. I air-sprayed the fan underneath, removed a LOT of dust and made sure such a buildup would not happen again. Other than that it always worked like a charm.
After the update to Windows 10, I experienced occasional freezes that required a restart. They didn't seem to be related to laptop activity. Sometimes I would find the laptop frozen after a couple hours of idling, other times it would freeze in the middle of something. They were random and far between so I accepted it as something that it did.
The real trouble started around June 20th. I was watching a movie with MPC-HC. The video froze with spurious pixels and the machine became frozen again. I didn't think much of it given its recent history and rebooted. I noticed that both the BIOS screen and the Windows loading page had spurious pixels too. Again, although this had never happened to the best of my memory, I didn't think much of it as for the rest, the laptop looked like it was loading Windows correctly. And eventually, as it arrived to the Windows Login page, it was clean and sharp, and after the login I could use the laptop with no problem.
The following day, as I turned on the laptop, the spurious pixels were still there - again up until the login screen, after ... Read more

I have swapped:
1) To another display
2) From VGA to HDMI outputs on PC, and swapped the individual cables.  Same problem
Checked Drivers and installation:
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers.  No effect.  Have rolled back windows and even reset windows.  No change.

Hi, I've got a problem which I hope you can help me with.

I received my new Dell Studio 1558 laptop today pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium and bundled with a bunch of other programs. I decided to install a copy of Windows 7 Professional I had obtained so had to reformat the HDD (but I left the Recovery partition unaltered).

I have decided however that I would like to return the system back to its factory defaults (bundled with Home Premium and the Dell software and such).

Since I did not remove or alter the Recovery partition I was hoping I could still do the restore however when I bring up the restoration utility it says it can't find an image to use. Any ideas what I should do?

There is a re-installation DVD provided with the laptop but I have my feeling this is just the OEM so will not have bundled software.

Answer:Restoring Factory Default Image to Dell Studio 1558

Hello mikeyp23, welcome to Seven Forums!

The recovery setup may automatically look for the factory installed OS on the partition that you formatted and not finding it, it may not be able to "find" a place to re-install to. I have no experience with Dell and I hope this isn't the case; I'm sure someone with more info for you will be along to help shortly.

I dropped my laptop and now the LCD screen exhibits some distortion. I can still make out images (see a complete screen). There are just some rippling flowy lines across the screen and colors that should be white are showing up magenta. This happened twice before after I dropped it and both times my computer seemed to heal itself. The second time it went back to normal was after I squeezed the plastic covering over the left hinge that it slightly cracked where the plastic parts meet on the covering's edge.

Also the colors move/wave when I plug in the power cord.

Hello Everyone!

Can someone help me out with the driver for the USB? All the USB controllers are okay under the Device Manger but the OS ain't detecting any of my USB's. Kindly help.

Many thanks!

Answer:USB driver required for Dell Studio 1558 - Windows 7 Home Premium

The ONLY device drivers for USB is the default Windows USB driver.

There is some other problem. What is not being detected? If you connect a device, such as a USB flash drive, it has to be disconnected with the "Safely Remove Hardware" function FIRST. If its just unplugged there is a very good chance when its connected the next time Windows Will not detect it. In these cases, connect whatever device is not being recognized, then go to the Device Manager and display the USB section. Usually there will be an "unknown" device listed and that will be the device that is not being detected. If this is the case, RIGHT click on the entry for the unknown device and then LEFT click "Uninstall". Physically disconnect the device, restart the PC and after Windows has started, connect the device and Windows should detect it as "new hardware" and reinstall it (and it will work).

Hi everyone,

My name is Tarun. I have been facing an issue with my newly purchased battery. I did not use my laptop for an year or so because my battery was dead and i didn't even remove that dead battery from the laptop, it was kept inserted for an year. A few days ago I purchased a new battery. When I turned on my laptop with the new battery and tried to charge it, I saw its charged percentage as 7%, I thought that it will be fully charged within an hour or so but it didn't. Although, when I hover the mouse on the battery icon ( right bottom under the tray ), it displays the message as 7% available (plugged in, CHARGING )....Please note, i wrote "charging".

To my surprise, percentage of "battery charging" never increases, I do not know what's wrong with it. Adapter works fine, windows runs fine, everything seems to be working fine.

I discussed with a naive person who repairs laptops. He wasnt sure of the fault but he guessed that that there could be a problem with charging IC. I didn't agree with him because of two reasons, 1st- he is a naive person, 2nd- If charging IC has a problem then it shouldn't have displayed the message " plugged in, CHARGING".

I am pretty much frsutrated and dissappointed. Could someone please help me and let me know what should be/ can be done?

thanks & regards

Hey Guys,

I've had my Dell Studio 1558 Laptop (Windows 7) for around 2 years and 9 months. Iv'e been having a fair few problems with it ever since I bought it.

This time it's been playing up mostly when Iv'e been facebook gaming within the last few weeks (more often anyway). Where it will just decide to freeze and becomes un-responsive where pressing even Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. I'm forced to hold down the power button to force a shut-down and then start it up again. If my facebook game isn't open generally at the moment I don't tend to get problems.

Although prior to this over the last approx. month, my laptop was shutting down or restarting without warning. Sometimes it will still do this after freezing, it will just shut itself down and stay turned off until I power it back on or restart itself instead. Twice within the last week or so it wasn't able to start up properly and attempted to do a 'system restore' but failed. But after that it was able to start up again. A few times when it shut down and I had to press the power button a few times because it kept powering down instantly each time I pressed the button.

I've had to send it away twice already once for a dead Hard Disk Drive needing replacing and the other time for the fan/heat sink needing replacing. Both times before I had trouble with this laptop randomly shutting down or restarting (rarely freezing though). When my HDD failed my computer was unusable and wouldn't start at all, and when my fan/... Read more

Answer:Dell Studio 1558 Laptop Freezing and Randomly Shutting-Down or Re-Starting

Hello lilkimmy2468

How many other programs/browser tabs do you have open when you are playing these Facebook games? It seems possible that you are trying to get your laptop to do too much. From what I can see the Dell Studio 1558 laptop comes with 4GB of memory, which may sounds a lot, but once you are running a few programs and resource heavy programs (especially on the memory such as Facebook games), it can slow down your laptop, possibly creating the issues you have.

If you are only running your browser with one tab open, you may have a memory issue, so you may have to run a memory test/diagnostic, depending on your answer to the above.

I will say that it sounds like your laptop needs some general care and attention, when was the last time you run a disk defrag or disk cleanup? How do you normally use your laptop, does it sit on a flat side where air can circulate easy? We may need to run some extra repairs/checks to make sure everything is working correctly, the last thing you need is to do a system restore but then find that fails for some reason, disastrous.

Hello, users. First of all, sorry for my english. This post is to tell you my experience with this very know problem and how I solved it.
Computer specifications:

Dell Studio 1558 (bought in 2010)
Intel Core i5
4 GB of RAM
ATI/AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5470
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits

The problem started with the common error "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered...".
This was followed by several BSOD, associated to the video card (atikmpag.sys file).
Finally, after a couple of weeks, the laptop screen turned black, but the laptop was still in operation.

Is not a display problem.
Is not a driver problem.
Not even a video card problem.
It is a manufacturing problem, where the video card soldering is ruined because of overheating.

Take your laptop to a specialized technical service, and ask to do a "reballing process", which consists of desoldering, cleaning, and soldering again the video card.
This process requires the correct equipment, which is a high-precision infrared soldering machine. DO NOT LET TECHNICIANS TO USE A HEATING GUN.
Well, this is all I have to tell. I did this process and I have my laptop working better than ever. The costs of reballing, at least in my country, are very low compared to a motherboard replacement. For reballing it is 120 dollars, and for a motherboard replacement it i... Read more

Hi! Been pulling my hair out for a week with this. I am an advanced user who is totally stumped. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional x64 with all drivers installed from x230 3435-22U having issues where if it goes to sleep. When the machine wakes up, SOMETIMES it allows me to move the mouse with no issues and continue to use the PC.  SOMETIMES, I have to use the touchscreen to move the mouse and then can continue using the trackpad. and SOMETIMES, it is totally frozen at the log-in screen and then powers down suddenly. Hardware diagnostics all check out just fine. I have also switched SATA in BIOS to 'compatibility' and upgraded the BIOS as recommended. I have also disabled AMT inside the BIOS. I'm really stumped here. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell Dimension E310 running Windows 7. I upgraded to Win7 about 5 months ago and then added a video card about 2 months ago. About the time I added the video card (NVIDIA GForce 8400 GS), my Dell stopped coming out of sleep mode. I have to hard power down and then I can restart. Only recently I've noticed that even when I shut down and let the machine sit for a few hours, it behaves the same when I push the power button as it does when I try to bring it out of sleep. Here is what happens in both cases (trying to come out of sleep or trying to start after shut down):

Power comes on to the computer (the fan starts, the lights on the box come on), however I don't hear the disk drive spin and the monitor doesn't wake up. If I hard power down and then re-power on, everything works just fine.

I have NOT upgraded my power supply and I guess the video card may be drawing more power. Could this be it? Could there be a capacitor that needs to have some charge to get things started and that is why it works on the second start, but not the first start? Or is this a bad hypothesis? Any suggestions out there?

Answer:Dell won't wake from sleep - takes 2x to boot

I've now installed a higher wattage power supply (430 W to replace the old 230 W) which should be more than enough. Unfortunately, symptoms are the same: If the machine is off for a few hours, it requires two tries to startup. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I am running Windows 7 Pro x64 and I am having an issue where my computer goes into sleep mode, fails to wake from sleep, strangely resumes its state once I do a cold restart, and then after restarting again, refuses to boot.

Here is what's happening step-by-step:
Computer goes to sleep based on the time set in the Balance Power options scheme. Fine. Often, computer wakes up perfectly fine from moving the mouse or pressing a key. Fine. Very occasionally however, upon waking up the computer, the lights, keyboard lights, fans and everything else except for the display comes on. I am forced to do a cold shutdown by pressing the reset button. Upon booting up, Windows displays "Restarting Windows" rather than "Starting Windows" and resumes its state when it went to sleep. Strange but OK. Everything seems to work normally. The problems come in when I then do a shutdown or restart after it has resumed from the cold shutdown. The computer shuts down perfectly fine but during the next boot, freezes right during the animation of the windows logo and immediately restarts the computer and launches into the DOS-looking prompt asking whether I want to do a Startup Repair because the computer failed to boot.

I have tried Startup Repair from HD and from the Windows disc and neither have done anything. I am usually forced to just reformat everything and start anew. This problem recently started occurring after I installed an Intel X-25m 120GB ssd and put th... Read more

Answer:Windows fails to wake from sleep, then corrupts boot

I just recently got hit with a similiar problem, it unfortunately resulted in a corrupted BIOS that is unrepairable, it ends up locked in a low power state. There is no one single reason why Windows fails to wake up, and it's kind of a common problem. From the research I've put into it, hardware and the version of Windows does not matter. You'll either suffer from it, or you won't. My recommendation would be to disable both your display and PC sleep settings, and stick to manually shutting down and a screensaver to completely avoid it before any possible hardware damage is inflicted, and until there is more information available on it. The CPU, mobo and PSU are the most likely to become damaged.

If you still wish to use Sleep, make sure all your drivers are up to date, along with Windows, might make a small difference.

If you have another system available to you, or are able to borrow a mates, go ahead and use it to test your hardware for faults incase your situation is hardware based, and not failed coding on Microsoft's part. Also on that note, try removing your SSD for a week or two (or however long it usually takes before your system decides to sleep in) and see if it solves it, and post back with results.

I would still keep an eye on here, no less, incase a solution comes to light. Go ahead and do some Google searches on the issue, the plethora of possible fixes people have tried may work for you.

If possible, can you recall anything else you have ... Read more

I'm new to sevenforums and would appreciate the help of some of you. I have updated my user profile with all of the details and specs of my system that is having my issue.

Recently, my computer will not wake up from sleep mode. Once it enters sleep mode, the only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button, completely shut it off, and then boot my system back up.

It appears as if everything starts back up once I open the lid or press the power button to wake it up, but the screen never turns back on. The fan starts up, the backlit keyboard lights up, the leds all blink, but nothing I try will turn the screen back on forcing me to press and hold the power button for a complete shut down.

I have reinstalled the latest Intel HD Graphics driver as well as the latest NVIDIA graphics driver (both the stable and beta release).

I do not get a blue screen or any sort of error. Upon the restart, I am not prompted with any error from windows or any signs of the forced shut down. I have been messing with this issue for a few days now and am asking for some help from the community here at sevenforums. If you need any additional info let me know.

I have a c200 425 3gu all-in-one that has been very frustrating for 2 issues.   Since I've had it: 1.  On booting the computer, the screen is black.  I have to put it in sleep mode using fn/pc key, then once the power button is flashing (which sometimes takes several fn/pc hold downs), i think push the power button briefly.   Then the monitor display led turns on showing the monitor has been switched off.  Then I push the monitor power button and I have display.  If I put it to sleep instead of turning off computer, it does the same thing.    I have waded around the Lenovo support site until I feel like puking.   There must be a simple fix and it must be a problem on more than just my machine.   Very frustrating.     2. Slow.   I have DSL, which isn't great but i regularly get 3MB download.   On my Dell laptop using a wireless connection, I have this speed.   On my bluray player I have this speed, again a wireless.   But on the C200, I have half the speed, whether wired or wireless.   I've turned off all virus and malware software, deleted all uncessary programs - plenty of hard drive space.   There is no gaming software or any fancy software.   This machine is just used for web surfing.   1GB Ram.   This thing should be faster.  Any ideas?

hi Lews,
Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
Regarading your questions, try to:
1. Reboot the computer in Safe Mode . If the problem doesn't occur, open Device Manager (click Start > Device Manager) and under Display Adapters, uninstall the display driver (this can be an Intel GMA3150 or Nvidia G305M). To reboot into normal mode, open msconfig and under General Tab, set it to Normal Startup and observe.
If the issue persists, but can hear something on the background, there's a possible short on the function board (this is the chip that controls the buttons at the lower right side of the screen) and you will need to contact Lenovo support for service. Support phone list here.
2. For slow Wifi, If you have the Atheros AR9285 Wireless Adapter and running Windows 7, you can try to:
a. Update your wireless card driver to v10.0.0.75, get it here.
b. Depending on your brand of router, make sure you disable WMM (Wireless Multimedia) and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
c. Use WPA/WPA2-PSK TKIP or AES encryption.
d. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz), try to use only 2.4Ghz band.
e. After applying steps a-d, try running a speedtest again via

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

When I put my computer in sleep mode, it won't 'wake up'. I have to manually turn off the computer and then start it up again. This has happened twice. I'm not putting it into sleep mode until I find out what's wrong and that's exasperating as I normally leave my computer on all day so I can periodically play my games.

I have an issue with the sleep function. The computer does not awake from sleep. When I try to do it, it behaves as if it was waking, but it never ends and there is only a black screen; the mouse and keyboard are inoperative. The only thing possible to do is a hard reboot. When it boots, it shows a notice with a minute report (in the zip file) usually saying there was a blue screen, but I NEVER see any blue screen at all.

I know the power configuration is OK because I have always used the same scheme. A powercfg ?energy report shows several errors and warnings. They refer to USB and PCI (vendor 1002=ATI motherboard), but I don?t know how to repair them.

I downloaded the drivers downloader from and downloaded and installed the drivers. They are all Broadcom Corporation signed, the brand of my USB Bluetoth attachment. I rebooted after installing, as recommended. Run powercfg ?energy again and got the same report issues (in the zip file). I don?t think the processor utilization warnings to be very important because they are low and sporadic picks. It has been like this for some time now, so I don?t have a restore point. Can someone help and tell me what I can do so solve this issue, please?

Quite confident it's a driver issue, it will be very difficult to troubleshoot from the one included dump file though as it's incomplete and inconclusive.

Whether I choose any option other than to turn PC off, instead of tapping spacebar on my MS wireless keyboard I have to tap the button for power on the tower, then the monitor turns on as the fan runs, but always a black screen. So then I have to do a manual boot and select to start normally.
Started a week ago, around the same time as a graphics card failure. I installed a new PNY GeForce, updated ALL drivers on my Gateway DX4710-UB301A, (Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit, AVG antivirus free 2014) played with power management and startup config settings, trolled forums, performed malware scans, and still can't figure out the issue.

Answer:Studio XPS 1640 Wake Up Automatically

Could be an issue with your LAN cards power management features

To turn power management features on or off Open Network and Sharing Center (click the Start button, type Network and Sharing in the Start Search box, and press Enter).
Click the Change adapter settings link in the upper left of the navigation pane.
Right click the network connection you want to enable/disable power management support on and click Properties.
Click Configure.
On the Power Management tab, check or clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box.
When checked, power management is enabled on the network adapter.
When cleared, power management is disabled on the network adapter.

You can enable Wake on LAN for all wake methods or just enable magic packet WoL:
To enable Wake on LAN for all methods, check the Allow this device to wake the computer check box.
To enable Wake on LAN for magic packet only, check the Allow this device to wake the computer check box and then check Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer check box.

I've been running Windows 7 Ultimate for the better part of a year now. For about the last week or so now, my computer is going in to (what I assume is) sleep mode at the most inopportune moments. No amount of anything will wake the computer from its sleep - not the keyboard, mouse, ethernet activity (which should keep it from falling asleep in the first place) - only a hard reboot will bring my PC back to a state where I can use it.

Some of the things I've tried, so that people don't answer with "change your power plan settings" or some such thing. If it was that easy, I wouldn't be here asking for help. I'll restate that I've been using the same Win7 Ultimate install on the same PC for a year now, and it's only in the last week this has been happening.

Anyways, I have:
Verified all my power plan settings;
Disabled any screen saver;
This is an older desktop, not a laptop, so hibernate and hybrid sleep options are not even present. Nevertheless, I've followed this guide and this one for disabling both.
Used device manager to specify my keyboard, mouse, and ethernet card as "wake up" devices. Also used the command line to manually set these as "wake from any state", only to have them all not work.
Tried changing group policy and eliminating sleep/hibernate from the user group.
As I said, it's only been doing this for a week or so now. All my drivers are current. All my system updates are current. I haven't installed any new software. I was ... Read more

Hi Guys/Gals

Never use sleep function but last night instead of selecting shutdown hit sleep by mistake. Couldn't get system to wake from sleep and had to turn off by holding power button.

Today when switching system back on i get fan & case lights on , hdd and dvd activity. The keyboard is unresponsive (no lights) and monitor remains in stand by. Mouse gets power but doesn't wake pc.

Using reset or power button on case just restarts system to exact condition above.

Can't contact pc manufacturer til monday (pc 4 months old). Read quite a few other posts regarding vista sleep issues but haven't found anything that would seem to rectify this problem.

Any comments/tips gratefully recieved

Answer:Can't Wake PC From Sleep

Well I'm a beginner but I had a lesser important case than yours. I found you interupt a process of sleep if you try to wake it before about 5 seconds. Anyway, there are a couple of things you can try.

Unplug the power cord and plug it back in.

Pull out the wall socket thingy and put it back in.

Try doing something like booting into safe mode if you can.
The pc maybe still functioning but the monitor can't interact with it. Once you try to boot it, keep pressing F8 for about 10 seconds and then press enter. See if anything happens.

Could also be a shortcircut or something. Other people have had a similar problem.
