Removing folders from the left navigation pane

Question: Removing folders from the left navigation pane

Hello,

A few weeks ago I was investigating the possiblities of removing certain folders from the left navigation pane (see screenshot):

I then stumbled upon the option of editing the registry to make at least the following libraries disappear marked within the green square:

Is there a way to remove the libraries from left navigation pane without having to make edits to my server's registry?

Preferred Solution: Removing folders from the left navigation pane

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My problem is how the left window reacts when I select a folder.

If I have a long list of folders in the left window and I click on the small arrow to the left of a folder, it is supposed to show the list of sub-folders that are in the selected folder.

It does but here is my problem. Lets say the folder that I select is in the middle of the left window. When I click on the small arrow, Windows Explorer shifts the folder list down so that the selected folder is near the bottom of the window. Generally I can only see one of the sub-folders. And then I have to use the slider to move the selected folder up so I can see more than one sub-folder.

I wish it would leave the folder where it was and show as many sub-folders as possible underneath the selected folder. I hope this explanation makes sense.

Answer:The Navigation Pane on the left side of Windows Explorer

I tried it on my Computer and the on clicking the arrow it moves up as it should instead of going down. Please try out the following steps to correct the problem.

1. Restore the folder to default as follows and check if that helped:

a. Open windows explorer
b. Click on Organize
c. Select folder and search option from the list
d. Select General tab, and select “Restore Default”

2. Run an online scanner to check any malware or virus activity. The link that will help you to run a free scan on the computer is Windows Live OneCare

3. If the above steps do not help then run the SFC (System File Checker) scan on the computer to fix the system file errors on the computer. To run SFC scan, follow the steps below:

a. Click Start ,
b. Click All Programs ,
c. Click Accessories , right-click Command Prompt ,
d. And then click Run as administrator.
e. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow or Continue.
f. At the prompt, type sfc /scannow and hit enter. Once the scan is complete, restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Please tell if this was of any use.

My navigation pane shows Joseph Simpson (?my name?) & My PC. Under My PC (expanded) I can see my external H-drives; but they do not show under ?my name?. Both are almost the same as far as entries (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, etc. etc. Would it be safe to move most of the content in each entry from ?my name? to My PC & delete the listed entries under ?my name? (remove clutter)?
Most of my data is stored on the external Hdd?s. Would that upset the apple cart as my name (Joseph Simpson) is the only account on this computer, therefore is the only administrator account. Both expanded together becomes a little confusing.
This is how MS set up the computer?s navigation pane after the new Recovery ran.
Not being a computer guru, I?m assuming it was a total restore from a Dell recovery partition on the Hdd, as this was a refurbished unit with 10 pro already installed.

Answer:Removing entries in navigation pane?

Hello Joseph,

The folders you see under "My PC" (aka: "This PC") are links to the folders under "Joseph Simpson". You could use the method in the tutorial below to safely remove the folders under "My PC" without affecting them under "Joseph Simpson".

Hi,

I was wondering if it was possible to make the folders nested in the Favorites of the Navigation Pane. AFAIK nested folders work in both Libraries and Computer of the Navigation Pane, however when moved to Favorites they are just a simple link.

I've Googled a bit and all signs point to no (which sucks), but wanted to get a confirm from W7 gurus here.

Thanks.

You've answered your own post.

No, you cannot have nested folders in the "Favourites" navigation pane. Which I agree with you, sucks.

Not that it matters to me anyway, as I make far better use of the libraries anyway...

My Outlook 2010 Navigation Pane no longer lists all my folders, neither does each fold have the + or - box which used to indicate hidden folders. I can still find the list by using the 'Move' command.
How may I restore the system into the Navigation Pane?

Answer:Outlook Navigation Pane does not list my folders

I think you must have minimized the pane by mistake, see if you can see a small arrow there somewher, that expands the navigation pane when clicked on.

Hi there

Recently I've been experiencing a weird problem with Windows 10. Right clicking any folders on the pane on the left - the one with folders, libraries etc. causes explorer to freeze and then crash.

I can right click on files and folders in the main explorer window. This problem only occurs when I try to right click on something in the navigation pane.

What could cause this?

Answer:Explorer crashing when right clicking folders on Navigation Pane

Any new folders added ? Guess can be a shell extension that gets put into the context menu when you right click.
Some have used this free program to disable non microsoft shell extensions. Have you recently added any new software since this occurred? http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

I hope I'm not duplicating known information here. I've seen adding shortcuts for these folders to Quick Access, but not rooted in the Navigation Pane. Here is what I've got now:

Critical info regarding display in Navigation Pane was found here:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(v=vs.85).aspx

Critical info regarding the appropriate flags for display in Open/Save dialogs was found here:

http://www.tenforums.com/general-dis...-vanishes.html

These files work on a per-user basis. This avoids having to deal with Ownership/Permissions issues of the CLSIDs under HKLM.

So here are the files:

Links-Add to NavPane-Per User-64-bit.reg

After installing Dropbox, I notice that there's now a custom link to the Dropbox folder in my File Explorer > Navigation Pane > Desktop list (see screenshot below).

Does anyone know how I can add such (sym?)links to other directories on the computer?

Specifically looking for ways to add to list in the "Desktop" section of Navigation Pane... not the "Quick access" list.

My thinking is... I'd like to consolidate shortcuts to my custom cloud storage folders. Right now there's OneDrive (built in to W10) and Dropbox, and I'd like to add similar links for my Google Drive, Amazon Cloud Drive, etc. directories. Trying to have them all appear together under "Desktop", rather than split between Desktop and Quick Access.

Windows 7 has apparently lost the ability to rename a folder in Explorer's left-hand (Navigation) pane by left-clicking a highlighted folder a 2nd time.

I know I can use F2 or right-click< Rename, or even rename in the right-hand pane, but I'm so used to doing it it the left-hand pane that I keep forgetting and trying to do it.

So is this intentional or is it a bug? I'd like to know so I can report/request it for a future SR. Although I have a feeling it's supposed to be this way and I'm wasting my time. Still.... it's always worth a try.

mac

Answer:Rename folders in left pane - feature or bug?

Mac,

I think it's intentional. You can see the full options if you right-click on any folder at the left pane of Windows Explorer, so i think it's not bug.

Microsoft is not careless on that case.

Thank's.

Hi. My problem is slightly different but along the same lines? When I open Explorer, Favorites is displayed at the top of the left column, as desired. However, not all of the folders I have designated for Favoriates is displayed in the left column. When I left click on the word "Favorites," then in the right column the entire list of Favorites folders does display. (Meaning: there's a list of nine folders on the right side, but back in the left column under Favorites only seven are displayed.)

I've tried all of the solutions described above and none fixes this problem. If I try to drag a folder from Right to Left, two things happen: (A) A copy of that folder is created on the right side (so I'll see the original and a version with "(2)" after the name; and (B) on the left side, one of the folders that used to be in Favorites no longer displays.

I don't know why a copy is made on the Right, but the action on the Left leads me to believe that somehow the left column Favorites is set to display no more than seven (7) items, but I can't find where to change that setting.

ANy ideas out there?

Answer:Favorites in left pane does not display all Favorite folders

Hello Kell, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As a test, open your C:\Users\(user-name)\Links folder, and see what you have for shortcuts there. If they are all there, then cut and paste them to your desktop to empty the folder, then copy them back to see if they appear in the navigation pane under Favorites afterwards.

If that doesn't help, then try the tutorial below along with the yellow TIP box if needed.

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

So i recently changed my theme, and attempted to change the explorerframe, but failed. NOw, i have this strange problem where neither the navigation pane or the navigtion bar show up on various occasions. this is usually when:

1.) I am uploading something to the internet such as to imgur.com or attatching something to an email
2.) When I am navigating to a file inside of a program

Here's what it looks like: http://i.imgur.com/FwWiT.png

Notice the difference between the regular explorer and the messed up one. I can't navigate backwards in the messed up one.

Here's a picture of the program i used to change it in the first place (Windows 7 theme manager):

http://i.imgur.com/UCIzQ.png

Note: I already tried to fix it myself and managed to mess up my explorer and had to do a system restore. not pretty.

If you guys have any tips then they would be much appreciated!
Cheers, Yort

Answer:Navigation Pane and Navigation Bar not showing up!

The Windows Theme Installer is most likely responsible for corrupting Explorer so I would get rid of it. It's isn't wise to install any third-party utilities which modify Windows' system files, at least not unless you have a complete system backup strategy in place such as a disk image.

System Restore cannot be relied on to get you out trouble because old restore points are automatically deleted when the maximum disk space assigned to SR is reached. So a more permanent system backup method is required, especially in cases where corruption is so bad that Windows won't even start.

I click on the "+" beside the icon of a drive or folder near the bottom of the left pane of my Windows 7 Explorer. If the list of sub folders that opens is longer than the distance to the bottom of the pane, the lower icons become hidden. Those subfolders extend "below" the pane -- out of view. I want the contents of the pane to shift upward so that all the sub folders of interest are visible -- like on my XP computer and my win98 computer?

Is there a way that I can fix this?

Please, before anyone suggests using the "favorite folder links" view-type in the left-navigation panel instead of tree-navigation, I like moving files around my hardrive by dragging into the left-nav and having them dynamically open up so I can maintain a large sub-folder listing.

That being said, there are some utterly useless folders that I could love to stop seeing. I have, of course, already removed Control Panel, Favorite, HomeGroup, Libraries, and Network.

I am very interested in removing the following from my left-nav tree, because even though I never need to drag files into them they are always there taking up space in my left-nav panel:

"User Folder" Sub-Folders:
- AppData
- Contacts
- Desktop

"Computer\C:" Sub-Folders:
- MSOCache
- ProgramData
- Users (I already have this listed in the Nav-Tree)

Answer:Win 7 - Removing folders from the Left Nav Tree.

Unlike special folders (Favorites, Libraries, Network and HomeGroup etc.) individual folders cannot be removed from that panel. There are simply no registry settings for them.

Looks like the only natural solution could be to set Hidden attributes to those folders (and some of them already are hidden) and turn ON option "Don't show hidden files, folder, or drives".

I'm trying to make it so that Navigation pane would be disabled whenever I open folder shortcuts, such as music, documents, pictures, but I want to keep it enabled when I got to My computer or Windows explorer. However it seems that its either enabled or disabled for all folders. Any way to fix that?

Also, is there anyway to make windows remember each folders individual settings? It seems whenever I open a folder, and resize it, any other folder will open exactly the same size as the previous open folder. I believe even Windows XP had an option to remember folder settings.

This excelent feature we had in XP, was taken out of 7.
In point of fact, the more one uses Windows Explorer the more I hate it.

So far no fix but there are a couple of apps out there that will lock size and position of any window when its re opened.

So i managed to add a few custom items to my navigation pane (since all cloud storage providers just HAVE to be different)

problem is, they are added to the bottom. I'd like to group them up with the others.

namely next to dropbox/above This PC instead of at the very bottom.

Been digging around here or there for the last few days with minimal progress. Any one know the m.o. for this?

While wrestling with a problem on my desktop computer with XP Pro OS I?m having to use a laptop with Windows 7 that I?m not at all familiar with. Can someone please tell me how to move the Navigation Pane from the left to the right in MS Office 2007 Outlook Express?

Answer:Windows 7 navigation pane

Assume you are referring to Outlook 2007 not Outlook Express (which isn't available on W7 without tweaking). Outlook 2007 will be the same for XP and W7 and as far as I am aware it is not possible to move the navigation pane to the right.

I believe that's what it's called, in Windows Explorer there's a load of Shortcuts on the left, how can I edit them, I'd like to remove unneeded things as well.

Also can you modify the shortcuts in the download pane? It has I believe 5 shortcuts on the left which I'd like to customise. In Xp I just used TweakUI to do that, but I don't know anything about Windows 7.

Answer:How does one modify the Navigation Pane?

Make a screenshot of it. And show which ones you want to change.

Do you mean folder %userprofile%\links ?

Hi all,

Been reading the forums for a while now, and only just registered, so hello

I have had win7 installed for quite a while now and all seems ok'ish.

My problem is, that when ever I go to open or save files from various programs first noticed in Firefox, the navigation pane is empty and subsequently I can not change to the desired location.

I can not place the time/date it started so I don't know which (if any) restore point to use.

I can see the navigation pane in Windows Explorer but not from a program.

Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers

Microsoft Word's Navigation pane theoretically has keyboard shortcuts associated with the right-click menu items available there, e.g.:Alt-E: Expand All
Alt-C: Collapse All
In particular, I'd like to know the shortcut sequence to collapse the heading levels displayed to 2. The sequence indicated is Alt-H,Alt-2.

The problem is that I can't figure out how to initiate these shortcuts within the context of the Navigation menu. For instance, when the Navigation pane is active and I use Alt-H, it still shifts focus to the Home tab (the "global" binding of Alt-H).

How can I use keyboard shortcuts to access the menu items in the Navigation pane?

Thanks,
Barry

Something that has been bugging the hell out of me, since Vista, is that the old XP file explorer was replaced with the new Libraries opening window. That's fine, but why the hell does Computer have to be all the way to the bottom.

Ya if I was a novice user I might be inclined to use those folders more frequently, but as an IT guru, this is nuts. If I download, move, or copy anything to an external hard drive, USB, or DVD, I always have scroll down the Navigation Pane. This is such a little thing that it's almost stupid that you can't slide these categories up and down. This way users can set their most used categories to the top. If you can move columns back and forth, it makes no sense that you cant do it for the nav pane.

I know I can make a shortcut pointing the file location to %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /E,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} will allow me to create the Computer shortcut which can be use to pin to the taskbar. I've seen 3rd party software bring back the old XP explorer nav pane and I've also seen one that either adds or hides the Navigation Pane items.

It really is silly not to add something like this that is so simple to do for Microsoft. But does anyone know if there's any registry entry I can use, or some 3rd party software that does this for Windows 8?

Answer:Navigation Pane Order

Hi Bad,

Welcome to the "Eight Forums." . . .

Try this; close all the folders above "Computer" then open "Computer" then close Explorer (file manger). Now reopen and everything should be the way you want it. Did this several times to see if any would change and it didn't. This worked for me, albeit it doesn't mean it is the answer you are looking for. . .Good Luck.

Hope to see you around the Eight Forums again an IT guru is always a big plus and the Eights.

Strange, since I thought this had always been a constant since past OS versions. It seems from the screenshots of others, an lack of info that this is a "me" problem.

My username does not appear as a collapsable folder in any forms of the navigation pane UNLESS I pin it to Quick Access, select it from there, then file explorer will account for its mistake and shows the collapsable list. Otherwise, once the instance of file explorer is closed, this option disappears yet again. Sounds like registry, thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

First, thank-you for taking the time to look over my question.

I just loaded Windows XP Home, SP3 and I'm working on getting it configured to how it was before. I have spent over an hour trying to figure out how to disable or hide the left side navigation pane, which is present when I open the folders. I just can not recall how I solved this before.

I have gone into Folder Options and I do have it selected to "Classic View," which did not help. I have googled it, as well as did a search on this site, but there are just too many pages to read through them all, and I was hoping I could find out here.

I am fine with working within the registry, so if there's a hack, that would be fine. However, I'm guessing it's something much easier.

Again, thanks for the time.

Hopefully I?m in the most appropriate location for this inquiry.

In my pc navigation pane for my main pc it goes Desktop, then the Libraries (Documents, Downloads, etc), Homegroup, Computer (with the listed drives), then last Network. In my secondary pc between Homegroup and Computer it has ?Admin? with many of the same Library menus along with AppData. I would really like to get rid of this extra file location. It used to also have a download location that was a pain and I changed the paths for that but I would still like to get rid of it totally. I was also able to delete some other things that were empty. I think this must be something the previous owner set up as I don?t think I have ever seen one set up like this.

Not sure but for one thing it appears the AppData in that Admin listing is linked to the User AppData files. I certainly don?t want to delete it if I can?t and cause a mess, but I would really like to clean things up. There is enough confusion and potential problems as it is. Anyone know how to do this? I think this may be the default location for AppData so a path may have to be changed or maybe this is some kind of shared folders situation that needs to be undone. I can make a backup of the AppData files in case deleting it needs to be reversed. Or maybe if this is not really a secondary location using up hard drive space there is a way to hide this listing. Thanks.

I've been looking through the help pages and the forum for an hour and I have to get back to work, so I'm hoping somebody can answer this question for me.

In Word 2010 the navigation pane is great, but is there a way to collapse the outline structure? When I open a doc, the nav pane is completely expanded, and as this doc is huge and has multiple nested headings, it takes a while to scroll to where I need to be. If I could show main headings only, things would be much easier.

Is there a way to do this? Any help much appreciated.

Answer:navigation pane in word 2010

Hi, greenery. I found the following information at Use outlines to structure notes and ideas - OneNote - Microsoft Office

Quote:
Expand or collapse an outline

You can use the Expand and Collapse commands on the Outlining toolbar to view certain levels of the outline.
Click the paragraph handle next to any text at the level that you want to expand or collapse.
If the Outlining toolbar is not already showing, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Outlining.
On the Outlining toolbar, do one of the following:To expand the outline elements, click Expand, and then click a level to show all paragraphs that are at that level.
To collapse the elements, click Collapse, and then click a level to hide all paragraphs that are at that level.

Note Whenever you collapse a paragraph in an outline by clicking its handle, be sure you use the Type Text or Select Objects tool instead of the Pen tool.

At Expand and Collapse Headings in Word Outline it shows how to expand/collapse more than one heading section at a time by selecting the part you want to expand/collapse. Then click the appropriate button from the Outline Tools group on the Outlining tab.

I upgraded to Office 2013 a number of months ago and have a problem I can't find the answer to that has finally driven me crazy enough to ask about.

In the navigation pane you have the mailbox with all it's sub folders (inbox, sent, deleted etc.) I collapse the mailbox and work primarily out of PST folders and the Inbox, Sent, and Deleted links in the Favorites section above this.

Randomly the mailbox will expand so I can see all these folders again. Not sure why - I'm guessing it's from things like an email auto-saved to Drafts - when the mailbox expands the main PST folder I use drop out of site and I have to scroll down to them (such a big hassle right?)

Outlook 2010 had no issues with this, you collapse the mailbox it stayed that way until outlook was closed and opened again or you manually expanded the mailbox folder list. Is there a way to keep the mailbox collapsed?

Answer:Outlook 2013 navigation pane help

I haven't noticed this myself, but maybe if you add these other folders to favorites, it might help. I mean Drafts for example.

Ok so I know it is possible to remove things from the libraries pane in explorer which I have done, but this question is not about the explorer libraries pane but it is about the open file/folder/whatever libraries pane. How do you get rid of "Favorites", "Homegroup", and "Network"? If you only use the normal tutorial it will remove it from the open menu of atleast notepad and paint, and I'm sure it does the same for some other windows based programs. But if you use any other program like office when you select open the libraries pane is just how it was at the beginning, how do we change this?

I have a habit of opening explorer via the win+e shortcut and I've noticed a problem. It seems it doesn't remember the navigation pane settings (i.e. folders completely hidden only favourites visible)

The same behaviour can be observed when starting a new explorer task, but not when starting explorer c:\ for instance.

Is there any setting that I have to change to make it remember? I presume it will be somewhere in the registry.

It can take a while to load everything on various machines, depending on hardware and configuration.

If you don't want it to load all folders, ( which takes time);

there are other tutorials there on this and similar matters.

By the way, that window is known as the "Explorer Navigation Pane", "Sidebar" refers to something else.

On a positive note, I have found several fixes for problems in these forums. This is a great place to get help.

I don't need to access my Contacts list in Office 2010 very often. I just noticed today that the text entry for Contacts was missing from the Navigation pane. Instead, there was a small icon in the lower right corner of the pane for Contacts. On all my other machines the text entry is present. I've no idea when the text was replace by the icon or why -- it could have been weeks ago.

Will someone please tell me how to get the text entry back?

Thank you very much

Answer:Contacts Missing From Navigation Pane

Hi.

Could you try clicking that small arrow which says Configure buttons and check if contacts is tick marked?

Attachment as reference.

Another thing could be the height was pushed downwards. Drag it up and see if the text comes back.

My Zune software's navigation pane has disappeared! I played a video in the software, but after playing the video, the navigation pane (the left one) is no longer there. I can't seem to find where to reactivate it. Does anyone know where this option is?
Thanks

Win 10 10240. ONLY usb drives in the navigation pane keep expanding to open folder. I have turned this setting off/on many times and it will not stick for usb drives. Is there a reg file around here that will take care of this for me? I searched but didn't see anything at a quick glance. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I just noticed that this happens on my Win 7 H.P. machine as well. If anyone knows a fix for 7, it may work on 10 too.

Can I please have a few more letters added to the alphabet please. 24 just isn't enough

At the moment I have an XP computer with 6 x 2TB drives in it. No redundant technologies at all. These 6 drives are partitioned to various sizes to accomodate the various categories of information that I have.

For example, I have 2TB set up for movies. I have a drive of 128GB set up just for service packs, updates and patches. 128GB for music... You get the idea.

I just added a 1TB drive for backups. I can then free of the 700gb currently on the server for other purposes (extending existing drives), and so I can get important data backed up regularly.

Problem is, I need to keep a drive spare for my USB stick. So I'm out of drive letters. Oh, I mean on the client, not the server. I have 3 letters left on the server. But my PC has 2 x DVD/RW, 1 x BD-ROM, and 1 Virtual drive. Yes, I have thought about taking one of the DVD drives out.

I've downloaded Librarian and have set up a number of libraries that basically mirror the drive letters. I can access the libraries within applications. But not from "computer" unless I turn on the navigation pane, which drives me nuts.

Since I can't have more letters in the alphabet, I'd really like to get rid of the drive letter concept alltogether if I could and access data inside and outside of applications some other way.

It might be relevant to note that I'm playing around with WHS 2011. As long as that will run ColdFusion MX 2004 ... Read more

Maybe you can have additional letters! Have you tried adding any additional language(s) to your system, which could provide you with additional letters?

Also, just a thought. . . but are you able to utilize any of the symbols or characters from the Character Map as drive letters?

I accidently removed Desktop from the top position in the navigation pane and would like to put it back. I would like to place Desktop above Computer and have Desktop open expanded by default.

Thanks

Is it me or does this bother you as well

When I click on an item inthe navigation pane and want to scroll down to a certain folder in the main window, the mouse wheel stays on the nav pane. Have to go and click in the main window to scroll.

If you click the navigation pane, then the wheel should in my opinion default over to scroll on the main pane. It's a little bothersome to have to keep clikckingto scroll after i just cliked to open that item in the navitgation pane already.

confused yet? maybe the pic will better describe it. I know it's not a big deal, but......

Like in the pic i clicked on music folder in the left nav pane, i would want it to scroll over on right without having to click mouse again. Maybe it's a matter of preference, but that's mine.

Cheers

Answer:navigation pane and mouse wheel

I agree, I find that annoying as well, I think it would be better if it would just scroll on whatever window or pane that your mouse is over.
