Windows Update Hangs, Windows Update Troubleshooter Reports Error 0x80070057 Not Fixed

Question: Windows Update Hangs, Windows Update Troubleshooter Reports Error 0x80070057 Not Fixed

I am using Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1.
Windows Update has lost my update history and hangs when I tell it to check for updates. Windows Update Troubleshooter reports "Windows Update error 0x80070057(2016-07-15-T-12_59_34P) Not Fixed". How can I get Windows Update working again?

Here is a detailed account of the problem:
Earlier today, I ran Windows Update and told it to install 15 important updates. It said it was downloading them, but stalled for 30 minutes at 0% done.
I rebooted my computer and re-ran Windows Update. It reported that there were no pending important updates. I clicked "View update history" and saw that the most recent 15 important updates had failed. I clicked "Check for Updates" and,
when it finished checking, Windows Update continued to report that there were no pending important updates.
At that point, I concluded that something was wrong with Windows Update. In an attempt to fix it, I downloaded and ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter (WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab). It reported one problem found: "Windows Update error 0x80070057(2016-07-15-T-12_59_34P)
Not Fixed".
After running Windows Update Troubleshooter, I re-ran Windows Update. It reported that my most recent check for updates was "Never", and that updates were installed "Never". When I clicked "View update history" I saw an empty
list. When I clicked "Check for updates", the application stalled at "Checking for updates...".
I have re-booted, re-run Windows Update Troubleshooter, and re-run Windows Update at least twice more. Windows Update Troubleshooter continues to report "Windows Update error 0x80070057" and Windows Update continues to show no update history and
to hang on "Checking for updates...".

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I am having issues updating my Windows 7.
Whenever I try to manually update it gives me an error where it says
"Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running."

I tried to troubleshoot Windows update and it came with a few errors unfixed.
"Problems installing recent updates"
"windows update error 0x80070057"

What is the best way going about fixing this, I could not find solutions online that work for me

Have you run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
If it doesn't help, do the following steps.
Click Start and type regedit and press the Enter button.
Navigate to HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
Delete all values with this 0x80070057. Then run the the following fix it tool.
Reboot the computer and verify that the problem has been resolved.

Hi Folks,

Tried umpteen things in the last 24hrs to resolve a problem I'm experiencing with Windows Update - so I'm hoping that the good folks at SevenForums might be able to help....

I have managed to manually install the .NET Framework 4.6.1 (via this link to KB 3102438:

I have run the Windows Update Troubleshooter several times (link: and I always get the same error - see image below.

I have also run the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) from here: several times and also the EasyFix 50205.msi

When I run Windows Update - all I get is the following (and after an hour of "no progress", I give up).

I ran a full AV scan yesterday after updating the definitions files (Kaspersky Total Security and a Malwarebytes scan - again after updating - both found no threat.

I have also run sfc (System File Checker) three times from an elevated command prompt (after re-boot each time) and have no reported "integrity violations".

Getting short of things to try.

Machine details:
CPU: Core 2 Duo T5800 2GHz with 4GB RAM.
HDD: WD Black 750GB with 222GB free
Windows OS: Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium SP1.

Any help gratefully accepted - thanks in anticipation.

BTW, I DO NOT want any update to do with Windows 10 carp

I'm having problems with Windows Update. I have it set for automatic but it has not updated since January. I keep getting the following Windows Update error 0x80070057. I have an HP Pavilion laptop running Windows 7 64bit with SP1. I tried the Fix It utility and got server problem errors and the above error. This site and one other I looked at suggested to someone else that they go into Start, type regedit in the Search bar. Then open regedit and navigate to HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\ Windows\WindowsUpdate and remove any and all values with 0x80070057. Tried that and I have no WindowsUpdate in Windows. My navigation is to HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows.

Obviously, I'm missing a rather important file in my registry. Any suggestions how to restore it? I have no restore points in my system restore, so can't do that.

Hope you guys are having a good day.

Having a few issues with my computer at the moment. I previously had a different issue with Windows Update ( Error 80072efe ) but earlier today i managed to somehow fix it and was able to download Service Pack 1, which was what the error was on. All other updates before it (20) all installed successfully. Unfortunately shortly after doing so and restarting, Windows Update now continues to search for a very long time, it has been hours to no avail or progress whatsoever.

I have tried a SFC Scan which showed no issues.

System restoring to before the Service Pack update was normal, but eventually i had to download it again and the issue persisted.

I have used the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it has detected error 0x80070057, along with Service Registration is missing or Corrupt. Before the system restore it did not have the missing/corrupted Service Registration.

I have scanned for rootkits. (there is none to be found)

Another note is that ive had this computer for a long time now, although I have performed a low level format just yesterday so this computer isnt cluttered anymore.

Would a CBS log be handy at this point? Thanks if you can help!

First of all - welcome to BC !
It is always a help if, when you have a problem like this, you give the make and model of the computer involved or, if you built it yourself, the main component specs, and which flavour of operating system you are using.
If this problem is of fairly recent origin, the simplest cure is to try a Restore, to take you back to a point in time before the problem started. If you have never done this before :-
Click on 'Start - Control panel - Recovery'. This will open the System restore dialogue. You will see a large button 'Open system restore', click on this. After a few seconds you will see a box with a 'Next' button, click this, and you will come to the screen where you choose which restore point you wish to use. Very often you will only be offered one choice, the latest restore point. If this predates the start of your problem, select it and click 'Next' and continue with the restore process.
If this restore point does NOT precede the time the problem started, there is a button on the left hand side to show more restore points. Click on this and choose an appropriate one, then click 'Next' and carry on as before. Once the restore starts it will take a few minutes, and when it has finished it may ask you to re-boot. Re-boot anyway.
While this process does not affect your data, only the operating system, it is always a good idea to back up your data before doing any operation like this. Once it is completed, you wi... Read more

So I am currently upgrading a PC I built with a new SSD. I have installed Windows 7 Home Premium (32bit) on it and am going through the process of updating Windows. I get to the point in the updating process that I download and install SP1, which downloads and installs successfully. But after that point the computer only ever runs "Checking for Updates" non-stop.

I used the Windows Update Diagnostic and I got this report. Nothing I can find online seems to help or fix this.

Can you help?

(I am shocked to have this problem, I mean how much can go wrong with a freshly installed modern Windows OS? The first time it did this I even put the Windows DVD back in, clean-installed Windows 7 again fresh and tried from the beginning again. Still the same problem)

My WIN 10 is updated till last Creators update.

For what its worth:
Today there was an update for Defender.
1-It downloaded to93% then stopped.
2-I reboot, it the start from 86% up to 93% and stopped.
3-I then went to Control panel, troubleshooter, ---Windows Update.
I let it troubleshoot WIN 10 Update, on which it fixed some things + pending updates.
4-I then rebooted, update of Defender went to 100%, everything is ok, no more update, WIN 10 Up to Date.

The problem is I cannot see from history where this last Defender KB update was installed-?
...But it say all ok.

My son's Toshilba Satellite L50-B-1DV hasn't successfully run a Windows Update since last October - I only discovered this yesterday.

When I had a closer look the updates, and just about every kind of troubleshooting I try, is failing with the error message "0x80070057". I've rooted around online but can't see any obvious fixes.

We'd prefer to fix this ourselves but as the machine is only six months our next step is to take it back to John Lewis for repair - which would be a pity as he uses his laptop every day.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

You have mentioned the error 0x80070057 while update installation.
This error occurs due to multiple reasons and therefore it?s not easy to say why this happens exactly. But the most common cause could be the missconfigured registry or damaged system reserved partition.

My recommendation for workaround:
Try to repair the system and the registry using CCLeaner. You could use this freeware software for registry cleaning as well as to remove the ?system garabage?.

If this does not help, try to repair the OS using the system?s own options.
The "Automatic Repair" option attempts automatically to diagnose and fix problems that may cause Windows 8 not to start or having a different wrong behavior.
Automatic Repair will start automatically when Windows is unable to start properly. If it detects any problems, it will automatically attempt to fix it but it can also be started manually.

Access to Automatic Repair can be found on the Windows 8 start screen. Now "Advanced" in the search box. When the search results appears click on the "Settings" category.

Now click on the option "Advanced startup options" and you will see the "General PC Settings screen". Look for the option "Advanced startup". Click on the restart now button and Windows 8 will restart your computer to access directly the Advanced startup menu.

Click on the "Troubleshoot" button and then the "Advanced options" butto... Read more

Running Windows 10, 1703.

I had an issue applying KB4041676 (which I resolved) but during the course of fixing that I ran the Windows update troubleshooter. I have no pending updates and my system is up to date according to Windows Update checker. But the troubleshooter said I did. It fixed the issue (supposedly).

For yucks I ran the Windows Update troubleshooter again. It appears to ALWAYS find pending updates and always fixes them. I now question the validity of the troubleshooter so wondered if there is a means to verify that updates are pending ... is there a registry entry I can reference?

I have also reset Windows update components using: A lengthy process. I removed an update and ran the update checker again and it appears to be working because it found the update to be applied and reinstalled it again.

I tried again the windows update troubleshooter and guess what ... it still finds an update pending and fixes it.

So ... anyone have any ideas or seen similar behavior? Just ignore the Windows update troubleshooter since my updates are working.

One of my Windows Server 2003 SP1 wasn't reporting its status to the WSUS server for more than a month. So I checked to see what is going on by running Windows Updates on the server in question locally. I was getting the Error: 0x800A0007 when I tried to download updates. I searched around and only found the following reasons:
1. Default language is set other than English
2. Date/Time was off significantly
3. Proxy was set.

And none of the above was the reasons. But it turned out that it was because the computer wasn't rebooted since the last update which required the computer to do to take effective. As soon as I rebooted it, the error disappeared.

I just wanted to share this information...

Hello all,
I have over 500 machines running Windows 7 that's having a hard time reporting update info back to my SCCM server.  What I found is this tool from Microsoft (
Windows Update Troubleshooter, which fixes the issue (so far...).  But I don't want to sneaker-net to all the machines to hand install the fix.
So my question/request is, is there a way to unattend that tool and/or script it?  Thank you.

Machine did not come with a disk or a repair partition. I do have a windows 7 Pro OEM disk but it is for my other machine - could I use as a repair disk or will it cause problems. I'm tempted to get a new disk & reinstall win 7 Ultimate or what? - losing the will to live!!

Use Regcure to reinstate the first backup it made. Reboot and try Windows update again.

Hello, I'm new on this forum.

I ran Windows Update Troubleshooter on my mom's laptop. It found 2 problems and said they are fixed. But everytime i run the troubleshooter, those 2 problems are found and fixed. So those fixes does not seem to be permanent, and are only "fixed" when running the troubleshooter. Is this kind of behavier normal? Update seems to work fine though, except being somewhat slow checking updates.

The laptop had some general performance problems and troubleshooting WU was part of troubleshooting them.

Also, is Microsoft Fixit (WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab) similar to Windows build-in WU Troubleshooter or can it do better job fixing problems?

I successfully manually installed update KB2810009 (Belarc Advisor reports no missing updates), I did so because Windows Update reported a failed install. Probelm is that now Windows Update will report this update as missing each time I check for updates. If I let Windows install it, it will fail to install keeping the issue forever. Any fix? Thanks.

Hi folks I have been pulling my hair out trying various options found on the net to get my Windows Update and Network Trouble shooter working. It either just hangs up trying to start or it comes up and says service not turned on. I have checked and the service is in fact turned on. Only change I made recently was an upgrade from a 300 gb hard drive to a 1 TB hard drive. I cloned my old drive and made a partition same size as the old drive then had the rest of the drive partioned off as a separate drive letter which seems to work fine except for the problem with windows update and network troubleshooter not working. I have an ASus Laptop with pentium dual core processor and 3 gb of ram windows 7 home premium 64 bit using Google Chrome browser. Does anyone have a sure fire cure for this problem. Thanks Much

Recently I have ran into some trouble with certain aspects of Windows 7. My problems can be best described by the 4 images attached.

So, where should I begin?

Answer:Windows 7 Errors: Defender, Update, Troubleshooter, and .NET Framework

With problems like this always assume a potential virus
If you can run a full anti virus scan
run a scan with malwarebytes and then run a scan with eset online.
If these are negative we are pretty sure it is not a virus, but not 100% certain.

See if you can go back a week before the problem with system restore.

Just a note for anyone who (like me) has wanted to try the Windows Update Troubleshooter from the Microsoft website.

There seems to be an error on this page, as at time of writing (30 September 2017).

There are two links, supposedly one for Windows 10 , the other for Windows 7 and 8.

However both links point to the same URL, and if you use it within Windows 10, it complains that Windows 10 itself has a newer version (even if , as seems likely given you're using this tool , Windows 10 hasn't been updated lately.)

Using this page seems to give the correct links :

The Windows 7/8 version seems to be at:
The Windows 10 version seems to be at:

This all started after a crash during the night while i was sleeping (never found it or the reason because my memory dump wasn't storing anything due to pagefile being less than memory). But during my search I ran the troubleshooter for WU and it came up with issues; but it doesn't seem to be doing anything for said issues.

As you can see from the snips, its suggests a few things but it doesn't seem to fix these issues permanently, nor all of them listed. I can keep running the troubleshooter and get the same results every time. Only once did it claim to fix everything after I restarted a ton of services (bits, MSI installer, WU service, cryptsvc, wuauserv, appidsv). I tried using this article base but only got to mshtml.dll when it said that i couldnt that command.

So I can't figure out what to do or if its just some hiccup that's always gonna say I have updates and corruptions. I am running the latest build, 1703, but can't figure out if I really have updates waiting or if I'm truely uptodate.

Answer:Windows Update Troubleshooter - Doesn't solve issues

Hi LevyLazu. Welcome to the TenForums @LevyLazu

Not exactly sure which article you use but this is the one I run, second post in this thread.

I might suggest you run SFC /scannow to see if it reports any corruption. May need to run more than once to fix everything.

Next alternative would be an in place repair / upgrade. This installs V1703. I always recommend you back up your data off machine regardless of the fact that it should be safe.

Just recently, and post putting SP2 on my sons pc I can't get Windows update to run.It stops responding at the "checking for the latest version of updater" screen then throws up the above error code. I've done a Google and the sort of things I get are suggesting that re-registering some .dll files should work (it didn't) or that you MUST be using Microsoft's vm javascript(the pc in question has Sun java installed). Has anyone else come across this error or got any solutions?

Hi guys!

I have a big problem with Windows Update

I never would like to upgrade to win10, for many reason, but it happened
I stopped the update, or probably it will never be possible due to obsolete hardware... I delete all files downloaded with Disk Cleanup

WU is stuck asking me to reboot, always
I tried to run Diagnostic
I tried sfc /scannow (no errors)
I tried the script Reset_Windows_Update_Full
I hate MS!!! Really...

My cousin brought her Acer Aspire 5349 to me to see if I could help with a Windows Update problem. It seemed there were a couple of old updates that were preventing all future updates from installing and it was caught in an infinite "restart to install updates" loop, but nothing was ever installed. I tried evertyhing I knew to do, nothing worked. So, I rest the machine to factory settings. Twice. Update still will not cooperate. It installed one update for Windows Update itself, but nothing after that. It just sits there "searching for updates" on and on. No error. Just no progress. I downloaded the Update Readiness Tool, and I'm getting the same thing...Windows Update Standalone Installer says "Searching for updates on this computer..." for HOURS. No progress. Wireless connectivity is good. I even tried disabling Windows Security Essentials, still nothing.

I've tried the update troubleshooter. No luck. It gets to "Checking for updates online" and then hangs.

I'd be so very grateful for any suggestions y'all might have. I'm ready to throw it out the window.

Thank you!

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

Hello everyone. I have a really weird problem on my hands. I guess it all started when I reformatted my computer a few months back, but never really bothered to update through Windows Update because I mainly used my PC for gaming.

After I open my Windows Update and it finishes searching for any update, it will hang/freeze whenever I attempt to install all of my updates. I have about 52 updates (1 GB) ready to be installed so I figured maybe I should try installing fewer programs. Tried installing about 7 MB's worth of updates but same thing happens, it just hangs/freezes and I would be unable to exit the process. (By the way, what would the process be called under task manager?)

I have tried deleting SoftwareDistribution and restarting. I have tried Microsoft's troubleshooting program WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab. And I have tried restarting my computer multiple times. Nothing works.

Really hoping I can get some help here. Many thanks, I greatly appreciate it.

edit: a little update - I tried installing a few of the updates... it hung for a while then it start installing but is stuck at 0%:

not sure what to make of that.

Answer:Windows Update always hangs when attempting to update.

Make sure, that you have those services running, if not try to start them to see, if they fail to start:

COM+ Event System
Cryptographic Services
DHCP Client
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Network Location Awareness
Network Store Interface Service
Windows Management Instrumentation
Windows Update

In the most cases it is Background Intelligent Transfer Service, which will fail to start.
Windows Update fix will not fix it, because the dependant services are not listed properly.

I installed this update through Windows Update yesterday on my Asus laptop and my parents' Acer desktop. On mine, the CU failed to install but with a retry it worked. After it installed, I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter, and came back with there errors:

Potential Windows Update Database Error Detected
Service Registration missing or corrupt
Windows Update database corruption.

I ran it on the Acer and the same errors were found.

So, I choose the Fresh Start option on the Asus which worked perfectly. I ran the troubleshooter again, found no problems. Reinstalled this update, but had to restart because it got stuck on downloading. After that no problems installing but the troubleshooter came back with those same errors.

The only thing I can figure is that the update is causing it but I'm not sure what to do.

I have Windows 7, 64bit. I had it set to manual update. I had not used the this particular machine in a while so I ended up with 88 new updates to go through. It was able to do two updates successfully but it now hangs for the remaining updates at %0. Fix It didn't find anything wrong. I was hoping to take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade but seems like the pending updates must occur first.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Go to Start/Search and type CMD, Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will restore any missing or corrupted System Files.

About 2-3 days ago, I downloaded the windows 7 64 bit updates. After the re-boot, some of my programs I use kept asking "do you want to change your system", or something like that. I never got that before because I loaded these programs myself.
Today, 12/12, I received one new update to MS windows 7 that took about 10 minutes to download and install. I re-booted, and now everything is fine. I think MS forgot, or coded the update wrong.
Does anyone know what happened, or did anyone experience this same problem? I have a Dell XPS.

As of Thursday evening, Sept 28, I've read a lot about a major Windows security flaw that may just have been "fixed" by MS, necessitating downloading and installing one or more updates from the windows update site. But whenever I go to that site, either manually or with automatic updates, which I have configured to alert me but do nothing further, I ONLY get told that an update to Windows Installer 3.1 is available.

Trouble is, I've downloaded that one four times now, and it always--ALWAYS--fails to install properly. When I tried to install it manually after downloading it manually, it failed with a small error window saying "access is denied"; nothing further. I've seen that one enough, when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".

But now, it seems, that's the only update MS says is available to me.

Using some good advice from an earlier msg, I ran Belarc's analysis routine. Among other things, it reported nearly 50 critical updates it could not verify had been installed.

Am I in trouble or aren't I?

What should I do?

Answer:Windows Update reports NO updates?!

Your computer specifications tell me that SP2 is installed and you said in your last post = when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".

Question is was SP2 fully installed?

The other thing that makes me wonder is the thing about the other 50 or so updates that do not show installed in Belarc. I would like you to download this update for Belarc and install it and rerun it.

As my hard disk has been dropping for no apparent reason I tried Disk cleanup which reported I could remove 10.4Gb(!) of Windows update files.
I am delighted to reclaim the space but can't believe the amount of files.
Curious if anyone has any views on how I could accumulate so much.
I use Windows 7 and, to the best of my knowledge have avoided downloading Windows 10. Updates are set to let me choose whether to download and install. I also check what any updates other than security are for, and if any Windows 10 element involved, refuse and hide them.

Try to remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration for Windows 7:
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start programs and files box.
Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
Type the following command and then press Enter:
netsh winhttp show proxy
Note The proxy setting is listed next to Proxy Server. If there is no proxy server, Direct Access <no proxy server> is shown in the Command Prompt window.
To remove the listed proxy setting, type the following command and then press Enter:

netsh winhttp reset proxy
Click Start, click All Programs, click Windows Update, and then try to download and install updates again.Alex Zhaozx

Searched and tired everything I found but when I used the Norton Removal Tool it solved the problem.
Norton and Windows 10 is not compatible unless you have the latest version.

Answer:Flashing windows 10 update Fixed

I take it Norton has its own Firewall. I had Windows Firewall switched off because my security program had it's own Firewall and could not download updates or run Edge.
The fix for me was to run Windows Firewall at the same time and everything worked ok.
So probably no need to remove Norton. I have Windows Firewall set at manual and not running now but still get my updates etc.
I have Eset Smart security on my computer which has its own Firewall. So anyone else having problems switch windows Firewall on as well when setting W10 up.

BUT - I was able to fix the problem by doing the following:
(1) Opened command prompt as Administrator
(2) Used date command to change date from Dec 6 to Dec 3
(3) Launched Windows Update - it worked!! There was one important update that was installed
(4) Rebooted
(5) Used date command to change date from Dec 3 back to correct date of Dec 6
(6) Launched Windows Update - it worked!!
Not sure why this fixed the problem, but it worked.

So recently I wanted to download updates for my laptop, because last time I updated was last year. I am running Windows 10 Anniversary Update, and I don't have any antivirus. So I just downloaded Malwarebytes and Avast, because Windows Defender Definition update was stuck at 5% Then, when I installed it I get this: Updates are available. Downloading updates 0%. I ran windows update troubleshooter, and it gave me this error: Potential Windows Update Database error detected. It did't fix it, but everything else is good. It wanted to do some updates stuff when checking for updates, but when I select that, it doesn't do anything. I tried deleting SoftwareDistribution folder, but I can't do it, because Windows Update Service won't stop. I tried using Command Prompt in Admin mode to disable the services, but it still didn't work. What do I do?

Answer:Windows Update Won't Work (Probably Fixed)

So I just tried using the windows update troubleshooter again after posting, and it started suddenly working. Even the database error got fixed, and now, windows update shows me failed updates and other stuff.
EDIT: It broke again. It just stopped working. It is stuck at 9% at downloading KB4015438. What do I do?

Like many users I suffered these issues: high CPU and RAM usage by svchost.exe, hours of checking windows updates and being stuck while downloading them.
After weeks of trying solutions I've found this one that worked.

Here's what I did:
- stopped WinUpdate service and installed KB3138612 OFFLINE
- rebooted
- stopped WinUpade again and installed KB3145739 and KB3153199, both OFFLINE
- rebooted

Then I checked for new updates and it took just about 10 mins.
Downloading new updates went right away and no more high CPU and RAM usage by svchost.
It's been 5 days now and so far problems are gone.

Hopefully this might help.

New G580, with Windows 8 factory installed, would not get beyond 15% updated. This despite it having several tries (three?), then finally giving up and automatically removing the updates. I ran the update fix offered, and a second session of trying to update still did not work after multiple automatic attempts.  Installing the updates 5 or 6 at a time (oldest ones first) works. Takes an age to do, as there is a reboot after every update, but after 5 or 6 update sessions it is finally done. Now I'm sure in the past Windows updates on a new machine used to come in dribs and drabs over the first few days use, so why try and do them all at once (and fail, and not be able to sort itself out)? Broken one of Miss Piggy's golden rules: never eat anything you can't pick up.

I have dealt with an issue of windows being unable to perform updates, or being unable to update other software such as Adobe Reader, and Office was crashing.
This came about with an update back in May 2016.  I had turned off the computer while it was attempting to shut down.  For the past five months I've spent countless hours (more than I care to admit) and tried EVERYTHING that I came across online, and I do mean everything.
I was getting an error code of 80080005 and zero updates were shown in the windows update history.  The computer properties showed that Windows wasn't activated or valid and displayed no product ID.  The Office suite (Word, Excel, etc.) also showed no activation and would only allow work to be performed for a few minutes before locking up.  Each time the computer was shut down it would hang when attempting to shutdown after this message "Preparing to configure Windows... Do not turn off your computer" and I would have to do a hard shutdown.
It was driving me mad, insane I tell you, but I kept researching for a solution, not wanting to do a fresh install.
I finally found a solution here on this site, and whomever created this tool is a God.
I can finally delete about 100 bookmarks related to the issue and supposed fixes.

Hi there.
I decided that as I had a small external surplus laptop 2.5 inch 320 GB USB drive - itself not much bigger than a USB stick (and only 2 X as expensive as a 32 GB stick) I gave it a whirl of installing the Windows to Go on this drive.

I did EXACTLY the same instructions as for a USB stick so in theory this should also work for Internal HDD's if you are doing this from a desktop and want totally separate installations.
Note that this creates ONE LARGE partition so after you've installed Windows -- use a partition manager to change the sizes.
Ensure Internet IS connected and do the updates.

The updates will download but the ist time you'll get a fail when it tries to install them.

just RETRY and it will install the downloaded updates.
I'm busy now with updating about 700 MB's worth of updates for OFFICE.
Got Photoshop CS5, Acronis, Partition manager,Winamp, VLC and even vmware work station to work. Plenty of space and much faster than an actual USB STICK but still tiny enough to be genuinely portable.

It's really a proper PORTABLE system.

Note I used a proper USB ===>SATA cable to connect the external disk to the usb slot on the computer. Fortunately one of these came with an SSD I purchased previously (Samsung) and had wondered what to do with it --lucky I never threw it away. !!

I've booted the system up on 4 different machines with no problems at all.

I'm sure that nce MS has got the bugs out of this feature it will be GREAT.

( I had to do some... Read more

Windows updates not working for a while. Initial was 8007370B appearing in the Windows Update window when searching for updates. Found bad memory using Memtest86+ and pulled the stick. Other stick no errors after 8 passes.

Toshiba HDD installed. Ran two different HDD diagnostics test on it and it passed.

No conflicts in device manager.

Now, Windows Update window showing 80070002 error. Based upon instructions, ran System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) but that appears to have not made any resolution. Ran it twice to ensure it ran successfully.

Then, ran the Windows Update Diagnostic.diagcab from and it shows Windows Update error 0x8007370B(2014-09-18-T-06_58_30P) as NOT FIXED. All other items in list shows as FIXED.

SFC /scannow will not run ... displaying the message "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation". I tried the same in a elevated prompt in normal windows and in safe mode with the same result. No luck running Surface Scan.

Ran chkdsk /r twice also.

Screen captures of both errors and CBS log file attached. Any help is greatly appreciated. In the meantime, I will begin running some antimalware scans just in case.

Thanks for any assistance.

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

I don't know what to search for on google but was there a recent windows update that screwed up the ability for windows to report the download speed in most programs?

Speed tests shows my download speeds are fine.

When I download Firefox and Jdownloader (will need to test with IE) both show a max of 150KB/sec I have a gadget that shows 300kb/s (it isn't completely accurate, it reports a little high but it gives me a relative number to work with.)
Basically Firefox and Jdownloader are reporting roughly half my current download speed.

Near the end of a download the download speed will spike up to something like 15MB/s and finish up quickly. It was fine before but I don't know what changed and it's really bothering me that it doesn't seem like a common problem but I know it was a recent issue.

Any ideas or anyone with a similar issue?

I put it in OS because I think it is an OS issue because I see the issue in two programs.

Please close. I thought it had something to do with VMware then I remembered Avira kept nagging about updates. Turned off webguard and it accurately shows the numbers now. Avira is so troublesome lately.

So I just did a wipe/format/clean install on an old Dell optiplex using the Windows XP oem cd that came with the system. The cd is the most recent version with SP3.

After install finished I went to the windows update site to begin downloading updates and I kept getting re-directed to this site showing a KB article informing me that I need to update to the latest service pack.
I tried a number of things which didn't work including upgrading the browser and re-installing SP3. What fixed it was I had to manually install the windows update agent from this web site.

Once I did that windows update loaded properly. Obviously this has something to do with Microsoft recently retiring XP SP2 and earlier versions.

Answer:Fixed: Windows Update redirect after a clean install

Thanks... this fixed my problem after many failed atttempts with other solutions.

I've got a Win 7 x64 pro SP1 machine on which Windows Update has stopped working. If I try to run manually from Control Panel, I get error code 80070002.
I have tried the following:

Stop and start update servicestop update service, rename "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" to "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.OLD" then start update serviceMicrosoft Windows update Fixit ( Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2013] ( virus scan (nothing found)window malicious software removal tool (nothing found)
None of the above has worked, I still get the same error code - 80070002. I have also tried all of the above with my antivirus software disabled and with Windows firewall disabled (just a shot in the dark there).
If anyone can think of anything else I can try, that would be really appreciated. Otherwise its going to be a reinstall I guess

Whenever I click "Check for Updates" in the Windows 7 update dialog, the scanning bar moves and moves, but it never passes this step. In eventvwr, there's an error with description:

"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service."

Windows updates never install. This is my laptop in my signature, so system resources shouldn't be a problem, what with 3 GB ram available, core2duo, etc. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

I've been attempting to get Windows 7 up and running on my Asus F8Sp-X1 laptop for a couple of days now. It came with Vista, which only lasted as long as it took to take the disk image with True Image, after which XP was installed. It's been that way ever since, and it runs perfectly... but everyone knows the limits of XP now since the security updates have stopped.

Since I have an unused product key for 7, I thought that would be a better choice than the Vista the laptop came with. I've never used Vista, but it is widely held that 7 is leaner and faster, and on a 3gb laptop, that seems the better choice.

The DVD that corresponds with the product key I have is of the 64-bit edition (OEM), so I plugged that product key into the MS web site and downloaded the 32 bit Win 7 SP1 DVD ISO, then created the disc.

I had already restored the original Vista setup from the image I made all those years ago, and had allowed it to update up to SP2. I started the CD and selected an in-place upgrade, which (though painfully slow) worked without any errors.

After fooling around with the fingerprint sensor for a while (finally I did get it working), I went to Windows Update to download all of the fixes that came after SP1. It never finished searching for updates... just goes on and on, with no errors and no results.

I went to the MS support site and tried the fix it tool. It claimed to have fixed things, but the problem persisted. I did a lot of reading... I tried the WURT, but it j... Read more

Microsoft has finally fixed the freezing issue in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Last month, we reported that many users were experiencing freezing issues on their PCs after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Microsoft later confirmed the issue, stating that it was impacting a "small number" of users, and posted workarounds until a fix could be made available.

The problem usually involved a system freeze after logging in, which rendered the device unresponsive. Microsoft stated that this occurred due to the apps and operating system being installed on separate drives. Now, after nearly one month, the company has announced that it has finally resolved the issue.

While the update on its original Microsoft Answers forum thread isn't quite as extensive, the company has clarified that the Windows Update which was released on August 31 contains a fix for the freezing issue. Microsoft also stated that users who uninstalled the Anniversary Update because of the problem can now revert to it using Windows Update Assistant, or by going to the Windows 10 download page and clicking on "Update Now".

With that being said, the company also mentioned that if you're still experiencing freezing issues even after installing the update, you should try the following methods:

Option 1: If you have a second administrator account on the PC that you can sign into, please do so and install the latest Windows 10 update, released on August 31st, 2016. After installin... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 update expanding windows files hangs at 18%

Hello dylan151 to TSF,

Looking at those two screenshots, you are doing a new installation of the Windows? 7 Operating System, correct?

If so, and after the length of time you have waited, it looks as though the installation is corrupt.
With a new installation, you must format thew Hard Drive Partition before you start the installation.
I would recommend that you abort this current installation, and start again, after you format the drive.
Having said that, if you are Upgrading to Windows? 7, what Operating System is already installed on the computer?
Please answer these queries.

Kind Regards,

So everything worked fine until it didn't. Now whenever I click on windows update in control panel it hangs and I have to restart windows explorer from task manager. I've tried to illustrate it in an image but it's rather hard to show it in a screen shot.
Bottom line is that I click on Windows Update but the second I do that, the control panel freezes and everything else works normally. Only thing I can do in order to close that window is to end the task in task manager.

Hi all, I am having a frustrating issue at the moment, where my pc is taking 20 minutes to boot - this is primarily because it keeps trying to install several windows updates, gets to 30% after multiple restarts, then fails, and says "recovering original windows installation" and finally boots up. It then presents a list of failed updates. This is below.
These all see to be for Windows version 1709. Can anyone tell me if my issue is possibly because, acording to my system I have version 1703 - and if so, how do I get it to 1709 so i can install these and move on?
Any advice please? This is driving me nuts. The only thing I have found online is recommendations of a full re-install, which i dont want to do, not with hundreds of Gb of games, and all the setup for HOTAS, Oculus and everything to do again, that will always be last resort for me.

I have tried:
Uninstalling BitDefender and trying again. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.Using the Windows Upgrade Assistant.Running updates in Safe Mode.

Everything I have tried has the same result. Any help would be appreciated, as a re-install would take me a couple of days to get everything back to where it is now. Other than these updates the system is perfectly stable and runs well.

Hey all,

So I am currently reinstalling Windows on my dad's old laptop after the hard drive decided up die on us, and I stumbled on a problem that's a bit too hard for me to fix.

Namely, I am completely unable to install any Windows Update. Not even MSE will install.

I tried running SURT, but got error code 0x8000247
I also tried running SFC /SCANNOW, it ran the verification fase until 98% and then stated that there where unfixable problems.

The displayed error codes are:
In WU: "8024A000"
In SURT: "0x8000247"
Whilst installing MSE: "0x80070643".

Attached you will find CBS.log and MSINFO with my system specs.
Cheers and many thanks in advance,

That's very reminiscent of similar errors in Win7 - and I wouldn't be surprised to see it being non-genuine.
Please post an MGADiag report BEFORE doing the below potential fixes.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Storage Matrix Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here -

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

If nothing has changed, try this...

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

If neither of them work, we'll re-evaluate.

I recieve error C80003FA whenever I do a Windows Update run. It doesn't get past the stage of checking for updates.

I've tried several fixes including:
- Waiting 15 minutes and running Windows Update again.
- Letting Windows Update run on its own schedule.
- SFC /Scannow
- Renaming the Catroot2 Folder.
- Running 3 different Fixit tools.
- Clean windows install.

After each and every one of those fixes I've tried windows update and I still get error C80003FA.

SFC Scannow has previously said no errors, but the last run through it said there were unfixable errors. I've got the log, though for brevity's sake I will keep it until someone asks for it.

Any ideas?

I have a computer which I haven't updated in a while. (Dumb, I know).

I have been trying to update it all day today and it keeps hanging at "Checking for the latest updates". I even let that screen run for 45 minutes and it was still working.

When I close IE it crashes and I have to stop it in the task manager.

I have run symantec, adaware, trendmicro and they all find nothing. I am about to run Spybot.

I have tried manually downloading the Windows update and running it.

I have tried disabling my firewall and Symantec.

I have tried stopping the DNS cache service as suggested on Trend micro.

I want to try connecting in safemode, but safemode disables my wireless...driver? I start IntelPROset and it says it can't find a wireless card. (sorry have forgotten exact language.)

Argh! Going crazy here.

Any suggestions?
