Latitude E5440 - Unexplained: Beep - Pause - Beep

Question: Latitude E5440 - Unexplained: Beep - Pause - Beep

A few times now my E5440 will give a low beep... then a few seconds go by, and another beep. It just happened a minute ago - only two beeps this time. But I think it happened a few days ago and beeped several times with the same pause of a few/several seconds in between the beeps. It's so quiet that before I've thought I was imagining it. But this time I was sitting in front of it typing.
There are no pop-up notifications on the screen anything is wrong, such as the 'disconnection' sound when you remove a portable HDD, or your Wi-Fi disconnects. Nothing to indicate what the beeps mean. The laptop is working perfectly. Battery is fully charged. I can hear the fan turning and changing speed but it's 2:30am here with no outside noise and I can barely hear the fan. (I assume it would be spinning up like crazy if something were overheating.)
I'm at a loss what it means. Does anyone know?
I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit if that matters.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:RE: Dell Inspiron 15 - 3000 series - Beep Beep Beep Pause Beep Beep Beep

Hi Ganny,
What are the exact # of beeps in a cycle?
Kindly review this chart and see page# 47 - it will help isolate the source of the issue.
Based on the exact # of beeps, that part would need to be replaced.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi,
My laptop here is a Dell Inspiron 15, 3000 series.
The laptop itself works perfectly fine, I am able to get into windows (which I installed myself, it originally came with Ubuntu).
Occasionally though, it will do a BEEP BEEP BEEP PAUSE BEEP BEEP BEEP PAUSE (repeats).
This happens on boot and sometimes when I am using it. Sometimes it turns off suddenly when I am shifting the computer around. It's extremely loud.

What is causing this? The sound seems to be coming from around the area the Memory banks are under the laptop, but nothing seems to suggest that anything is wrong.
I took a suggestion and used FN+Power to do Hardware Diagnostics which said nothing is wrong.

What else can I try?

Thanks!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15 - 3000 series - Beep Beep Beep Pause Beep Beep Beep

Hi,
I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check if the beep pattern repeats.

Switch off the computer.
Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
Remove the battery from the computer.
Press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
Then connect back all the peripherals and check if the beep pattern repeats and reply us with the beep count.

If you still receive 3 Beeps on the system then it indicates System board failure.. You will have to replace it on the laptop.
Please let me know the findings.

Hi there,
We have recently purchased (last month) a Latitude E5570 with docking station. We experience system hangs and freezes several seconds, sometimes up to a minute after hot undocking the laptop.  The mouse and keyboard become unresponsive.

It usually emits a beep code before freezing up.  4 beeps then a pause and then 1 beep. Any information regarding this?
Anyone have insights into this?
Thanks!

Hello hua_zhong_8611, welcome to Lenovo forum!  It seems that either your ram or system board produce the beeps and blank screen. Please refer to your Hardware Maintenance Manual page 50f..pdf. Reseating the ram or removing one, if 2 dimms are installed, could help to narrow down the problem.

I understand that this means there is a system board error.  I have a very good reason to believe that the BIOS had an issue (when I checked it before this happened, it had 75 boot options listed and said the volitale memory was almost full). Question: can I somehow force the BIOS to reset itself?  Is there a pin short I can use for this? Of course I am 2 weeks out of warranty :/  I assume if I sent it in they would just charge for a boarsd swap... likely $500-$600 dollars. Thanks for any help!

Answer:X230 1 beep, 3 beep, 3 beep, 1 beep, no screen: can I reset the BIOS?

1-3-3-1 means no memory. If you have 2 DIMMs, try with just one, then just the other. When you try with just one DIMM, it needs to go into slot-0. When you have the machine sitting lid-down and the battery compartment away from you, slot-0 is the one on the right.

For some silly reason I removed the 2 128mg PC2100DR ram sticks from my old computer that was working just fine. When I reinstalled them and I try to boot up I get a long beep, a pause, and another long beep. This senario continues and I shut the computer down as soon as possible. I'm sure I have the ram seated properly. Any ideas? Thank you in advance

Answer:One long beep, pause, another long beep when I turn on computer

If you are sure that you have them seated correctly try one stick at a time.

My X230 gets very little use since I bought it in 2012... sometimes no use at all for weeks at a time. Yet the system board failed, as did a replacement, and now the third board seems to have failed. On startup I get 1 beep, 3 beep, 3 beep, 1 beep and a blank screen. I tried the existing RAM stick in both slots: no startI bought and tried a NEW stick of RAM from Crucial in both slots: no startI tried both sticks in the slots at the same time: no start Other than another bad system board, what could it be? Where can I get a system board that might last? By the way, at the same time I bought the X230 I also bought a T530 that gets gallons of heavy use almost every day and never had a problem that I didn't cause myself.

most of the time I start my computer I get five beeps pause of few seconds and then 2 beeps. Initially, it was five beeps on;y but the last two have been started recently. what is it about? how can I solve this problem?

Answer:5 beep pause 2 beep

The beep sequence refers to the CMOS battery - or the clock chip.  Replace the reserve (CMOS) battery -- it's usually a CR-2032 button cell.  If you need details, post the model number (i.e., Inspiron N5110, XPS 9333, etc.).

Hi, I have been using the Y480 for almost 2 years. However, when I boot up this morning, it just beep beep beep continously. and the screen just have a cursor blinking. But after I reboot again and press F2 to enter bios, and then quit bios settings, the notebook can be boot up successfully. I have backup everything I need What should I do to fix the error? Is my harddisk gonna be failed? I have lost all the purchase receipts but I have registered 2 years ago. Thanks!Peter

Answer:Y480 continous beep beep beep during startup

Beeps are error messages from the Motherboard. Either the MOBO is failing or you have a problem with your RAM, I dont think it is related to your HDD, but you should create a backup. Also, if you don't have, please create recovery disks immediately. You may want to do more research depending on the BIOS manufacturer and the beep codes. You can google these terms and you should find information on the procedure to validate this. You can also try to re-seat the RAM, maybe it got a bit unsettled, if you moved the laptop. All in all, if you took the externded warranty and you are still under it, you may want to send the laptop to Lenovo for repairs.

Beep is off both in Power Manager and turned off in BIOS section of power management. Moreover, in device manager in non-plug and play list i disabled the BEEP. Still this annoying sound is there. BIOS is updated. However, there is no other section in BIOS where I can turn off the beep. Please help!Message Edited by Gordik on 03-22-2009 09:31 PM

Answer:Compaq bios freeze short beep long beep

Is the beep pattern just one short one long? Check your manual for the POST beep codes to determine what it is telling you. All POST beep codes are different so there's no way to tell unless we know exact model of your PC. The manual usually has the beep code in it, though.

Answer:CPU fan is working for few seconds and stoped then a long beep and 2 short beep

Hello, Your reported T61 bios beep codes would indicate you have one of the following failures: System boardLCD assemblyDIMMThe DIMMS would be my first choice to test so, if you have more than one DIMM installed, try  try removing one of them and try to boot, if OK, you have removed the bad RAM; however, if the results are the same, remove the other DIMM and install the one you removed previously. If you can boot OK now, you have isolated the bad RAM. Now, if you can't boot with either stick, then, I guess the RAM is not the problem (unless you have two bad sticks and I doubt that). See the  Memory Removal and Installation Guide for more information. Good luck!

The strange thing also is that it's making these beep like 1 time every 2 or 3 days as i shut down my pc every night and when i'm going to work.

To be honest I?ve never heard about such issue and really don't know why this happen but if this issue happens from the first day I think you should contact your local dealer or nearest Toshiba service provider directly and ask for help.

Generally speaking preinstalled recovery image and all installed drivers are tested so I cannot imagine it is some software related issue. Contact service and ask for help. Hey should check this and fix it. valid warranty will cover all costs.

Hi,

I am trying to help with a Dell Inspiron 5100.
The computer was running very slow and I've made a bit of progress resolving that. I think it needs some more RAM and I'm not sure if that could be at all related to the following.
The problem now is that after running for few hours, then shutting down, then trying to turn back on:
1. light comes on indicating computer is on
2. the computer makes 2 beeps
3. wait...black screen
4. wait...black screen
5. and so on

This does not happen everytime trying to start the computer so I'm really at a loss. I've read about overheating in this model which would seem to make sense but sometimes this will happen after the computer has been off for a day or so.

At a complete loss now.

Any assistance much appreciated!

My computer has been making this noise for quite some time now. but it would only happen once every few days so it didn't really concern me until now because its happening non stop. The noise is definitely coming from system sounds. I'm not sure if this is related but under device manager there is an unknown device which i cannot account for as i put the computer together and I'm staring in to the case rite now. there is also a yellow icon by teredo tunneling pseudo-interface (i have no idea what that is)lately my computer just seems to be working really hard when idling. the cpu is constantly spiking up to 100% usage and my hard drives seem to constantly be spinning. specscpu: intel core 2 duomobo: abit ab9ram: 1gb ddr2gfx: geforce 9800 gtx+hd: 2 seagate internal drives (1 with os) the other blank for storage. I tried installing an MSI Radeon HD 6450 2GB Pci express x16 video card. Once hooked up, I boot up and computer beeps, from what I can tell 1 or 2 long beeps, 8 short beeps. I was running built in 128m video so I disabled that in the Bios, but that didn't do it.

I noticed the Video card manuf. recommends minimum 400W PS, my rig only has a 300W PS. Would that really affect my upgrade or am I barking up the wrong tree. I don't want to fork over for a new PS unless it' warented. Thanks a bunch.

It's possible you need a new PSU.

The TDP on that card is only 27 Watts and it doesn't require a hook up so I would think your current PSU could maybe support but I wouldn't risk it. There is also the possibility that the motherboard you have isn't providing enough power to the card.

You could try to re-seat the card or clean out the PCI express slot and see if that helps.

Hi, Today I replaced my old graphics card with a new GeForce 9500GT and also added a new Kingston 2GB Ram Card. I installed both of them then restarted the computer, since then it has only powered on and playing 1 short beep then 1 long beep. I've tryed everything I can think of ranging from taking out everything new and putting it back to before I added the new items to completely taking out all 3 RAM sticks and reseating them. I'm not sure how a brand new unopened 2GB ram stick that fit perfectly and a brand new right out of the box graphics card can cause a problem like this. I've been through the ins and outs of the internet trying to find a solution but nothing has worked. Hoping someone can think of a unique way to fix this or how it could have possibly happened in the first place. I dont buy anything used everything placed inside my computer was/is brand new when it was purchased. Any help/comments on solutions would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I was just using my PC yesterday, everything is normal, It was hot around 32 ?C I think. Around 3:00 P.M. my PC suffered 2 BSODS, I can't upload the .dmp files because I can't open it. I thought its just overheating so I turned it off and after a few minutes the second BSOD appeared, I restarted my PC and the one short beep and one long beep is sounding. I checked my RAM and tried to switch it to another bank but the beeping is still there. My video card temp was 50-52 ?C before the first BSOD happened. What can I do to fix this?

Answer:One short beep, one long beep

Is it possible you are hearing 1 long - one short?
That might indicate a BIOS CHECKSUM error, depending on the brand of BIOS.

You can try a ClearCMOS procedure (CLRTC is the same thing):
Note all your current BIOS settings
Shut down the computer > remove the power cord.
Remove the 3v motherboard battery.
Move the CLRTC jumper from pins 1-2 to 2-3.
Touch a metal part of the case and Press and Hold the reset button for approx. 30 seconds to discharge all power from the board.
Put the CLRTC jumper back on pins 1-2.
Replace the 3v battery > replace the power cord > boot.
Immediately go back into BIOS and reset all your preferred settings. If the CLRTC worked you will need to reset the date and time.

Good afternoon,I'm having trouble with my windows vista computer.  When I start it up, nothing appears and there is a beep noise.  It goes beep beep then there is a 3 second pause then another beep beep.  I don't know how to fix this and any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer:Windows Vista Beep Beep

These "Beep codes", as they're called, are to notify you that the Power On Self Test, or POST, has failed. The number and sequence of beeps is generally to identify which component failed, but without knowing the manufacturer, specifically the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), it would be difficult to determine what the beep code is identifying as the problem component. For a successful Power On Self Test to take place, the following components must be working:BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) CPU (Central processing Unit) or processorPSU (Power Supply Unit) Video Output device (Graphics card)RAM (Random Access Memory)If any of these fail, your computer will not power on properly, and may exhibit symptoms like what you are describing. Generally, the first step in fixing a computer that refuses to start up is to isolate components that may be causing the problem. One thing to try would be to clean the internals of your computer (Warning: be sure power is turned off to your computer before working on internals!) and to reseat components like RAM, peripheral cards (such as your graphics card), etc.. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, you may think of taking the computer in to a reputable shop- most places that are reputable would not charge or would charge very little to clean and reseat a couple components. Chances are that the problem component is either RAM or Graphics card, these components tend to fail or require service faster than others, and may als... Read more

It could be that your Pc is overheating. If it has been with you for a while then dust gets stuck in the heat sink of the procesor and on its fan this makes the fan go slow and that causes the overheating.Ifyou know a little about Pc then switch off the PC at the mains take off the side pannel of the tower and look on the mother board for a small fan, you could put a vacuumm close to the fan and this may take out the dust, if not you will need to take off the fan to clean the heat sink

Hello,

Windows XP, Service Pac 3

I just had a "search engine redirect issue" fixed by "Gringo." One thing that is different now is at windows start-up, this laptop makes a BEEP TIC (Higher in frequency than the BEEP) vs the BEEP BEEP sounds I've had for ever. The computer start-up sequence is very slow as it takes minutes before the computer is ready to be used.

During the virus removal, a few times the reboot start-up sounds were BEEP - TIC - BEEP (again the TIC was higher a higher tone and faster than the BEEPs). What do the different sounds mean?

I'll start another thread requesting help to fix my computer problems.

Hi every1, Pls help me, I've bought 2 new ram cards from crucial.com. Each card is (256MB 144-Pin SoDimm 32MX64 PC133Mhz) equalling 512MB, because i was told the beeps are ram problems. And they both worked fine for a while, no beeps T22 loads up, but now all of a sudden my T22 beeps when i turn it on so i've swapped the ram cards about, still beeps when i switch the laptop on. so i took 1 ram card out and tried it with just 1 card (256MB) in both slots, perfect!! no beeps and loaded up perfectly when i put the card in each slot. When i try the other card with the first card BEEPING again!!!! so i tried that card on its own in each slot and beep again, thats the second time i had to send one back. Also should my Ram cards be PC133Mhz  or PC100Mhz? Whats happening to my memory banks?????Sorry for the long message. Thank you.

If this doesn't fix it go back to basics - disconnect everything from your mobo except graphics card, power and RAM does it boot the monitor on start up? If not and you only have 1 ram module fitted beg or borrow another and try that - if you have 2 ram modules try them one at a time on their own. Post back when done and adviseRgds

Hard drive activity looks normal after that and I guess system works fine except graphics.External video output doesn't work.

Answer:to beep or not to beep(that is the question)

Hi SLAYER. Although I've read that some motherboards don't have a POST beep, I personally haven't come across one. The most likely cause of no beep is that there isn't a connection between the case speaker and the motherboard. Possible causes that immediately come to mind are broken wire or the speaker connector doesn't match the motherboard header pins - possible one is wired for 3 pins and the other for 2 pins. If the motherboard connection is correct, remove the socket from the header and touch a 1.5V battery to the connector. You should get a distinct clicking from the speaker.

Question: Beeeep, beep beep

I just got new asus AM2 mobo and I'm getting beeps on start. 1 long beep and two short. Somewhere I found it is related to video card. I'm not sure if that's true, but I know videocard is functional and inserted correctly.
The mobo has it's own video, so I tried using only that, same thing. It just doesn't seem to make sense.

Answer:Beeeep, beep beep

One long two short looks like a video issue, as you said. You say it is also happening when you remove the graphics card and try to boot up with the onboard graphics?

Here's what I'd do:

Remove the motherboard from the case and set it on a box beside your case. Next, reset cmos (check your manual to find the cmos jumper pins).

Remove everything from the motherboard except:

cpu with heatsink/fan
one stick of ram
power supply connections to the motherboard (should be two)
connect the case's speaker to the motherboard

Then use a screwdriver to quickly touch (short) the two pins that usually connect to your case's power on switch.

See what kind of beeps you get.

If you still get the beeps, my guess is your need to RMA the board, but please post your system's full specs (including your power supply specs)

Good luck!

I just got a strange reaction from my pc. It was working fine last night, I went to start, turn off computer, shut down and went to bed. I got up this morning and I saw a notice on the screen (PC did not shut down during the night) It said there was a change to the global template for microsoft word and did I want to save changes so I said no and the pc shut down. Later on I tried to call up my key logger and heard a beeping noise from within my pc. I paid it no attention and went on the rest of the day working. I was using Quicken later on and noticed that when I tried to view certain graphs they seemed to be "fluttering" (The page seemed to go up and down rapidly on its own) I closed it and ran Avast antivirus scan. I tried to activate it and got an error message that said it ran into some kind of runtime error (I think) I finly got it started, ran a scan and came up empty of viruses. Then Avast kept shutting itself off. I emptied my waste basket, went to internet options, deleted all files and history (Including online content) then cleared all in Firefox. Next I went to start, run msconfig, start up disable all, restart, back to start, run, msconfig, enable all, reboot and everything seems to be fine now. Can anyone tell me what this may have or still is?

Anyone know what it means if you get a long beep followed by two short beeps when you boot up?  When this happens the screen is blank; it never continues booting; no Windows XP logo, etc.  It continues beeping like this until I hold the power button down until it shuts down.  Then, I can restart it, and it boots up, seeminly without issue.  This happens when I reboot intentionally (after windows updates or new software installs, etc.) as well as after it periodically locks up.  I suspect that the problem with it locking up is related to this--I don't consider a system lockup to EVER be acceptable, but I don't have time to get mad about it right now. This is a z61m.

Ok, the other day my girlfriends brother gave me a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop. He said he couldn't get windows to boot up, all it did was start to load and after a few seconds it would start running CHKDSK with a blue screen, but once it got to step 3 it would say it was complete, but wouldn't go any further or boot windows up.

So yesterday I decided to mess with it, and it did what he said it did. So I tried to booted it into SAFEMODE and it wouldn't. So I restarted it and pressed ESC and ran a Hard Drive Self Test and got an 07 FAIL. After that I restarted it, and all I got was a black screen then it made a loud BEEP sound fallowed by a REALLY LOUD BEEP, then it did nothing.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks!

Answer:Beep, Beep thats all folks

Probably a bad harddrive.

Youd better hope they had their information backed up...

What you can try is hooking it up to another PC as slave and see if you can get any data off of it, but they will likely need a new harddrive and OS.

I need a blu ray drive for this laptop.  The ones I'm seeing online don't have the curved front plate that conforms to my laptop.  Will any of these laptop drives online fit the E5440, or are my concerns about the plastic plate lining up legitimate?

Thanks in advance.

The drive may fit, but as you note, the faceplate won't match.  If you really need a blue ray drive, particularly given the heat they produce, you're better off with an external drive.

Hi folks, I've recently bought and installed a brand new 8Gb Kingston RAM memory (KCP316SD8/8), it should be compatible with my Dell Laptop (e5440) but after installing, the laptop just won't start. Power button will light  and fan will turn, coming to a stop in a split second. I've tried different configurations: inserting the memory stick in a different slot, with and without the default 4 Gb RAM. Nothing seems to work, it won't start anyhow if the memory stick is in :(
Anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

The service manual for the E5440 on the Dell website makes no mention of it. However I believe this laptop can take a mSATA drive. At the socket, there is a message that says "See Manual" or something like that. Only manual doesn't mention diddly.
So can someone confirm laptop is mSATA compatible? If so, what's the max size supported and can I boot OS off the mSATA? Finally, if someone can explain exactly whether this takes mSATA or M2 or whatever drives because it's confusing me a bit.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:mSATA for Latitude E5440

This thread was created by someone with an E5440 who bought and installed an mSATA SSD: en.community.dell.com/.../19986632
So yes, there's an mSATA connector (not M.2), and you'll want to set your BIOS SATA mode to AHCI.  When you ask about max size I'm not sure if you're asking about capacity or physical dimensions, but capacity shouldn't have a practical limit given that SATA has long supported multi-TB drives (larger than mSATA SSDs ever offered), and for physical size, whatever the 850 Evo uses apparently works, and I think that's the most common size.

I just realized that my headphone jack is not working as my computer fell out of warrantee. I missed calling Dell by 7 days. The internal speakers work fine but whenever I plug in any known working device into the headphone jack I get no sound. I ran the F12 audio test a couple of times and I got nothing out of either the internal speakers or the external speakers I was using for the test. Other than that everything appears to be working. From what I read on the community support page below if this was a failed sense pin I should have heard sound through the speakers. Right?
When I was on the phone with Dell they did tell me it was a hardware problem but since the machine was a few days out of warrantee there was nothing they could do. I did do some looking on the forums and found this page http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19345854 listing laptops with replaceable headphone jacks but did not see my Latitude E5440 listed. Needless to say I am in somewhat of quandary. Is it a sense pin? Is it fixable? Do people fix these things?
Does anyone have any suggestions of what my problem could be, other than not catching this while it was under warrantee? Is this something worth taking to an external fix it shop? Or am I looking at costs that would exceed the original purchase?
I did order an external USB to audio stereo adapter to see if that would give me a fix but it will not come for a few days.
What really bothers me is that I think this failed wel... Read more

Answer:Latitude E5440 headphone jack

berwynedThe internal speakers work fine but whenever I plug in any known working device into the headphone jack I get no sound.
berwynedIs it a sense pin?
Hello. If it were the sense pin issue then you would have the opposite symptoms -- no audio through speakers but the headphone jack working okay. A failed sense pin would prevent the audio from going to the speakers.
It could be a buggy Realtek audio driver. The way to test for that is to switch to the Windows native audio driver (assuming that you are currently using the Realtek driver, not the native one). If the headphones work okay with the native driver then try a different version of the Realtek driver if one is available.
1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names... Read more

Hi,
I recently bought this laptop second hand in very good condition, and the only problem I noticed was that the GT 720M GPU downclocks massively when running on AC, to a point where the built-in iGPU runs better. When running on battery the GPU performs as it should do. Here are the specs of the system:
CPU: i5-4300U
RAM: 4GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M
The AC adapter is 65W, which is the one that came with the laptop. Could this be the problem? I've seen people sell 90W adapters for this laptop.
Thanks in advance!

I have a Dell Latitude E5440 that's been running fine for several months.  Now when I boot, I get the following:
1) Screen comes on
2) Dell logo pops up
3) Screen goes black... blinking cursor in top left of the screen
If I hit F2, F12, or hold FN on power on, I'll get the message of entering setup, entering one time boot menu, or starting diagnostics respectively.  However, the system immediately goes to the blinking cursor and never enters theBIOS, one time boot menu, or diags.
Things I've tried to fix the problem:
1) reseated the memory
2) disconnected the CMOS battery (and AC power, removed battery and pressed power for 10 seconds)
3) booting from CD, DVD, USB, etc. (inserting the various media in the computer)
All to no avail.
So now you're thinking, what happened right before this all started? On Friday I tried booting from a USB drive and couldn't get it to work.  I changed the boot order and put EFI USB before hard drive.  It didn't fix the problem so I stopped trying and put everything away.  When I tried using the laptop on Saturday morning, this issue popped up.
This is a Linux only laptop.. No dual boot, no buggy Windows.  Please don't ask me if I can boot into Safe Mode. Even if I did have windows, the laptop never turns over to the OS.
Any ideas?

Answer:dell latitude E5440 dark screen?

I'd suggest a clean install of Windows 7 and all drivers, if that's what you want.  It doesn't sound like a hardware issue.
You may want to seriously reconsider the Air -- a Macbook Pro might be a suitable replacement for your system, but the Air is a tablet with a keyboard - it's not the workhorse your current system (or the Pro) is.  The Air is also a dying lineup - it hasn't been updated much in several years (the CPU is three generations out of date).

I purchased a new 500GB Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD for my Dell Latitude e5440 (running Windows 7 Pro).  The new drive was not visible in 'Computer', so I downloaded, installed, and ran the Samsung Magician software.
The Samsung software shows the drive is present.  And there was a "Validate" button - which I clicked - and now: "Drive Health Status: Good" and "Serial Number: Genuine" is displayed.
However the SSD is not visible when I double-click Computer, and the Samsung software states:
a. "AHCI Mode. Deactivated (IDE or RAID).  AHCI Mode is required for the best SSD performance."
b. SATA Interface N/A. Unable to detect SATA interface details.
c. OS Optimization N/A. OS optimization is only supported for disks using an OS drive.
Question 1: Will enabling this AHCI mode allow Windows to recognize the SSD?
Question 2: How do I do that?
Question 3: Will activating AHCI mode 'switch off' (disconnect) my 2.5" HDD?  (I want to keep Windows 7 on the 2.5" HDD, and install Windows 10 on the SSD to have a dual-boot system until I get used to Windows 10.)

Answer:Dell Latitude e5440 - Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD not recognized

1. Yes.
2.  Change it in system setup (F2 at powerup).
3.  You can dual boot but can't change the setup type to AHCI without reinstalling Windows onto the two drives  you want to use.  You will lose the contents of the hard drive when you do this.

Are you saying that "out of the box" Airplane mode was turned on?
Was this purchased new directly from Dell? Or from a reseller?
How to Turn on/off Airplane mode in Windows 10
Review this document.
Use hardware switchMany devices have a hardware switch to turn on or off the Airplane mode. You can use that button or switch to turn off all the wireless signals from your device. However, Microsoft says that using a hardware switch may not necessarily disable all the wireless communications. Some Windows Store apps have the ability to bypass the hardware switch to connect to GPS or cellular data. The best method, according to Microsoft, is to use the Airplane mode button available via Notifications in System Tray.Use Notifications shortcutTo toggle the state of Airplane mode in Windows 10, click on Notifications icon. Scroll down to see the options. Click on the button saying Airplane mode to turn it on or off.

Hello,
So, I've just received my Dell Latitude E5440 this morning... it was preinstalled with Ubuntu, but I wasn't satisfied with the way the disk was partitionned, and I wanted to install an other distribution anyway.
So, I've used Gparted and I created my partitions the way I wanted them, preserving the existing Dell partitions.  I remember making my Linux partition bootable, too.
Since then, the machine can't boot anything: neither from the hard drive, nor from an alternate media. When I turn on my machine, it just immediately goes to this screen:
Initializing Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.5.38.01
PXE 2.1 Build 092 (WfM 2.0)
and nothing happens.
What's even more problematic is that I can't go to the BIOS or boot to another device!  If I press F2, I have the "Preparing to enter Setup..." message, but it goes to PXE. If I press F12, "Boot options" appears in the right-hand corner, but it goes to PXE.
I'm stuck with PXE, and it doesn't even work: if I setup a DHCP/TFTP server, nothing is ever sent to the DHCP server.
Any idea?
Thank you.

Answer:Dell Latitude E5440: stuck to PXE boot, can't access BIOS

i had same problem.  did you ever figure it out?

Hi Mass112,Welcome to the Dell Community Forum. Please shut down the computer, remove any external connected devices like USB drives, AC Adapter battery and press and hold Power button for a minute which will release the flea power. Connect the Battery, AC Adapter and Power ON the computer, tap F12 at the Dell logo to initiate the Diagnostics. Please make a note of any error message and revert us here with the system status.

My Dell Latitude E5440 won't boot. Just black screen with power light on. If i pres the power button, the fan running and turns off
I have tried the following:
- Pulled the battery out, connect the charger and turn on
- Removed BIOS battery, connect the charger and turn on
- Swapped RAM
- Removed both RAM, and try 1 RAM
None of these helps. I have tried to remove all RAM and turn on, fan running and turns off. It is out of warranty and I'm lazy to fully disassemble my laptop

Hi guys,
I'd like to use the Intel Wifi Direct software for screen mirroring to Samsung TV, but looks like I'm in dead end. I've downloaded the software for WiDi, but it did not install due to my laptop did not meet program requirements - so I've googled and it came out I've got too old drivers. Updated them from official Dell driver support, and here comes the problem - it requires Graphics driver over 15.36.xx and if I choose my laptop model I got 10.xx driver and then 20.xx. 10.xx installs, 20.xx cannot. If i manually search for drivers for Intel HD4400 graphics then there are 15.36.xx drivers, but I cannot install them. Any idea how to skip that?

I'm having trouble with a driver update that I hope someone can help me with.  When using Dell Command Update to update drivers on a Latitude E5440 with Windows 7, the bluetooth driver starts to install then the laptop restarts without notice.  It's a nice restart and goes through the shutdown process--not a crash!  I've tried updating the bluetooth driver manually but the it keeps appearing in Command Update as an available update.  This is a problem because our environment has Command Update set to run on a daily schedule so the Latitude E5440s are rebooting every night.  In the grand scheme of things this isn't a big deal, but it is generating complaints and the update program obviously isn't working correctly.  Any suggestions?

After updating to BIOS A15, the keys to my Dell Latitude E5440 get "stuck" again with Linux. This has been a problem for many frustrating months back when I originally bought it, then solved by a BIOS update eventually, and now back again with A15. A14 worked fine.

Hi,
Would be grateful if anyone can help with the following problem. I have a Samsung U28E590D 4K monitor and at 2048 x 1152 it will only run at 30hz under Windows 7 (both DP and HDMI) on the E5540. I have installed the latest Dell Intel 4400 drivers(will not allow non dell) and the latest monitor driver. Both the Windows resolution form and the Intel control panel only provide 29 and 30 hz options.
I know the video card should be able to drive this as it just works on another LG 34UC98W monitor at a higher res of 3440 x 1440 at 50hz.
In the Intel control panel -> advanced IT says the monitor does not support advanced settings.
So by running CustomModeApp, it shows nothing in the dropdown for the monitor when the U28E590D is connected as I was hoping I could enter the paramters for 2048 x 1152 @60 hz here.
Any pointers would be appreciated!

Answer:Dell Latitude E5440 and 50hz on Samsung U28E590D 2048 x 1152 (Intel 4400) Win 7

Apologies, should have read "will only allow *from* dell" I.e I cannot download generic Intel 4400 drivers.

for the basics and schoolwork
and which is newer

Answer:which is better dell latitude e5440 or dell latiude e6430

The E6430 has a metal case and is more robust, but uses an older CPU and chipset.
The E5440 is a plainer chassis with a newer generation CPU and chipset.
The E6440 is the concurrent update to the E5440.
There are too many possible configurations to definitively say which is better -- it depends on the CPU, GPU, etc. in the specific model (or that you choose when you order one, but since the E6430 isn't a current model,  you may be looking at used systems).

Question: BEEp, BEEP

I have an Acer Aspire 5742-6406 laptop with windows 7 on. On start up, it beeps continuously and won't start up.

This does not happen all the time. Maybe every 4 th or 5 th time.

If I shut it down and start up again ,it will start, most of the time . Sometimes it is impossible to start.

Hold down on the start button and it shuts down ,then start it again and it may or may not start up !

Any ideas ?

Ok. I am helping my friend build his computer. We got everything hooked up. His powersupply hasn't came in yet, so we took the one out of his old Dell, and shoved it in there. Heh

He has:
Athlon 64 3000+
3 Extra Fans
CDRW
80GB HD
Radeon 9600

Our problem is :
All of the fans come on, and I believe the harddrive is running. The CD-drive lights up in the front but the green light keeps blinking. We try to stick the little needle thing to open it, and when we get the cddrive open, it automatically shuts back. So it keeps wanting to shut itself, even when it is shut.

Nothing ever comes up.. and we never hear a beep. There is this red light at the top/left of the motherboard (looking from the backside of the computer) that appears.

We tried unhooking all the fans, except the CPU fan of course, and it still does it.

Our conclusion is that it is either the powersupply or the processor.

We are going to wait till the powersupply comes in and try that one, just in case.

What does this sound like?

Also.. the motherboard could also be the problem I imagine. I am going to get him to make sure the CPU is down good..

Answer:Nothing comes up, no beep , wow

Although I have heard that the newest Dells use power supplies with wiring that matches the rest of the world, the older ones did not. Do not try to use that power supply again. Keep your fingers crossed that nothing got fried in the process

Today I hear "Beep" from my T43, everything else is fine.I checked the battery, it's still 99%.The only problem I had recently is the fan. I bought a Cooling Pad and put the laptop in it. The first several hours the Cooling Pad seems cooled down the temperature, but after several hours, the Cooling Pad become very hot as if it's cooking the laptop.I threw away the Cooling Pad. But when reboot, sometimes I got error message of "Fan not fixed". This message gone when I push Esc and reboot again. Now I get the "Beep". How to check where the "Beep" come from? Thanks!

Question: Beep beep

Re Dell optiplex 755 XP Pro Ethernet Connected

Machine is emitting a short 2 beep beep every 3-5 minutes
Whether its on or off.

The only variable is a periodic flash from the input ethernet cable light at the input slot on back of machine.

WHAT IS THAT BEEP BEEP FROM?

Answer:Beep beep

That beep sequence doesn't conform to the normal beep error codes for your computer - p350 of User Guide Dell - which you may want to bookmark as it seems to be quite comprehensive in its troubleshooting guide.

If you don't have the onboard Dell Diagnostics on your computer, you can run these Dell Online Diagnostics to check out the hardware Dell Hardware Diagnostics | Dell

Sometimes when i type something on my keyboard, then i hear a beep from my headphones, and like typing is disabled then... Even while writing this here im getting those beeps... help pls, its been like that for 2 days.

Answer:beep or something...

You might be hearing "Keyboard Clicks" I'd suggest that you explore your keyboard settings and disable anything that resembles keyboard clicks or key sounds. Here's how you do it on a Dell:

Quote:
Press [FN] + [F1] to enter the Setup program.
Press [ALT] + [P] (both at the same time) to go to the second page.
Highlight Keyboard Click: and press the [Right arrow] key (->) to set
it to Disabled.
Press [ESC] to exit the Setup program.
Now the keyboard will not emit a beep tone when you type.

Hi Everyone,I took out the ram from my Dell Dimension just to see what kind it was and to see if a new kind of RAM I pilfered from anotherold Del would work in it.I put it back where I found it (at least I think) now the computer won't start - it just beeps...Is she dead? What can I do?Any help GREATLY appreciated.- Bilko

Answer:Took out RAM - now BEEP

I assume you are now just using the original ram configuration and are not using the new ram. If that's correct, just open the case and reseat the ram. You should always discharge any static electricity from your body by touching metal before touching ram.

Question: No Beep

My compaq computer doesn't have the usual single beep at boot up but everything appears normal (or so I think). Have they stopped using the single beep with newer systems?

Answer:No Beep

if your compaq does not have an in case speaker then you wont hear the single beep. It may be that the speaker either does not exist or has been disabled. Then again I guess it is possible that with newer Compaqs anything is possible and they might have eliminated the POST Beep. How unreassuring that would be.
