Preferred Solution: Disk 2 is unkown, not initialized

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Please help, thank you.

I have a internal 3.5" HDD WD Black 2 TB and try to hook it up in the PC but it doesnt not appear anymore in My Computer. It was working few weeks ago. When opening Disk Management it says the disk is not initialized and it didnt state how many GB available on the hard disk (unallocated). Disk Management tried to initialized the hard disk and it pops out the following errors:
1. Virtual Disk Manager: Incorrect Function
2. Virtual Disk Manager: The device is not ready.

I have also tried using a powered USB cable and also connected in directly to the MoBo via SATA but the problem still persist.

I also ran disk part and it shows Disk 3 and Disk 4 as both online but both having size of 0 B

Below is the screen shot of Disk Management. When i right click on the HDD, there are four functions: Initialize Disk, Offline, Properties and Help however the the Initialize Disk function is greyed out.

I have Partition Wizard 9.1 and the attached picture below is the screenshot of the main GUI. It shows bad disk on the particular hard disk
I tried running Partition Recovery Wizard on the mentioned HDD and it shows a partition of only 512 Bytes but none of my files are visible (no preview)

I just need to retrieve the files in the Hard disk as it contains important files and pictures that havent been backed up. Any help and suggestions are welcomed! Thanks

I did a clean install of Windows 10 64-bit & now one of my hard drives has an issue. While on the desktop I could access the disk but it was very slow to scan & took several minutes. Once completed it seems to indicate all the folders but I could not access any of them.

Though a restart might help but now it doesn't read at all. In Disk Management it says that disk says "Disk 1 not initialized".

Is it as simple as initializing that disk or might that cause reformatting in which I'd loose 1.2 Tb's of important data?

Hi, My DVD Recorder died, so I took out the HDD Seagate DB35.2 and plugged it in my laptop. I get the above message in disk management. I also tried Knoppix 7.0 but the disk does not show up. My scope is to save the content in the disk and move it to my PC, is it a mission impossible? Any suggestion is very welcome. Thanks Alex

Answer:Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized

I'm not sure you will have much luck if the disk is not readable. You can usually use a Linux distro to try to read it, but you've tried that. If it can be read you can also try Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console. Other than that you could try Recuva and see if that will work. But, if the disk can't be read, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do if those 3 options don't help.

Hi, thanks for reading this and thanks for your help.

My laptop took a fall and after that it doesnt enter the boot sequence for windows, stops at the laptop manufacturer logo.

I remove my hdd from the laptop and put into a external drive i keep for this purpose, checking hdd?s.

I can?t find the drive in my computer but I can see it in disk managment. It says Disk unknown - not initialized.

I?ve tried using PW but i cant see the drive on there. I would really like to keep my files I have on that drive but it seems to me that it toast.

Answer:Disk unknown - not initialized

My laptop took a fall and after that it doesnt enter the boot sequence for windows, stops at the laptop manufacturer logo.

That is bad news mate. Usually a mechanical HDD won't survive physical shock like dropping etc. This is because of the microscopical gap between the head and platter. Heads flying height on modern HDDs is about 5-10 nano-meters. For example: an average human's hair is about 25000 nano-meters in diameter. A drop will most likely cause the head to stuck on platter or cause scratches on platter surface.
I would suggest diagnosing the HDD using "Seagate Seatool" and verifying it's health.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate
Run the tool and select your external HDD for testing. Then choose "Basic Tests --> Shot Generic" and wait for it to finish.

If the test is a pass, run "Basic Tests --> Long Generic". If either of the test fails, the case will be beyond DIY and you should consult a data recovery pro for recovery.

Trying to get an old external HD working.

Msg. that come up is that the Disk is not initialized.

Gives me the option of doing so.

What does not initialized mean, exactly, please ?

If I do, as the option suggests, will this wipe out everything on the HD, such as a re-format would do ?

Answer:Disk Not Initialized Msg. Meaning Of ?

It means that Windows somehow failed to recognize the mbr (its signature) as being valid. Initializing the disk will (try to) overwrite its mbr. The partition table is usually stored here.

I have used a hard drive disk for 3 years or so and today when booting I see its not showing and I get a message from disk management that it is not initialized although as I say its been running perfectly all this time and was so reliable that I placed all my "needed program and file on it" ...sad eh If I right click to/and initialize will I loose all my data on the disk..? I see the disk in the management consul as 'disk one 'but with the message not initialized..can anyone help..I saw and saw an old thread but not sure if it the same thing.. Can anyone help please..?? urgent..

Answer:Disk not initialized message

Sounds like your disk has become corrupted, or has otherwise failed. Disks are notorious for failing, just when you think that they are "running well". The only answer for data redundancy is RAID 1 (or a derivative), plus backing up to an external hard drive.

I suggest using some sort of Partition repair program in an attempt to rebuild the disks "Index" thus potentially allowing you access to the disks contents again. However this sort of activity is risky, either you will fix the partition or make the situation worse, in my experience the outcome is usually 50 / 50 - sometimes things end with a smile, and other times a tear!

Best of luck...

This 2.5" SATA drive is from a Toshiba that seems to have died this morning. There's no boot, no BIOS, nada.
I removed the drive and attached it via USB to my Win7 box where it shows as "Unknown, Not initialized, and offline." There are no rt-click options in disk management. I can hear the drive spinning, but it shuts down on its own occasionally, and sometimes won't power up at all without a bit of fiddiling.
I can't get any response at all from my Linux box, and neither Test Disk nor Recuva finds it at all.
Is there anything else to do, or is this drive dead, as I suspect it is?

Answer:Disk unknown, offline, not initialized.

If it's not being recognized properly, there isn't anything else that you can do.

I recently got a new HDD and took it to a friend's house to copy over some of the data he had (approx. 800GB).

The disk had never been used prior, so he had to initialize it when I brought it over; he's running either Win8 or Win8.1, and it was initialized as GPT with all the other settings at default. It was hooked up via a SATA > USB 3.0 adapter.

I brought the disk home and plugged it directly into my mobo, and Windows was telling me I had to initialize it; without thinking I clicked to initialize it as GPT, and haven't yet created a new simple volume.

What I'm wondering, is if there's a tool (preferably free) I can use either in Windows or a bootable linux distro (the Ubuntu I have doesn't have drivers for my USB wireless adapter, so I'm without internet whenever I boot into it; therefore the distro will need to come with the tool pre-installed) which will be able to copy the data from the used sectors to the unused ones within the same disk, so I don't need to worry about overwriting the data I'm trying to recover. I'd like to do it this way because each of my other two drives have 14.5 and 44 GB free, so I can't recover it to another drive then copy it all back

If there aren't any tools that do that, any suggestions other than bringing it back and copying the data again? (it took pretty long and was a bit of a pain, plus he's leaving for a week in a couple days.)

My set up:
Win 7 x64

1x seagate barracuda 1TB hdd
1x WD black 4TB hdd ... Read more

Not sure I understand your situation and I don't think I ever heard of such a tool.

I'd think in terms of partitioning the disk and putting all the data in one partition to shield it.

Why GPT?

This is purely a data disk, no OS?

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I bought a second internal hard drive about a month ago. I partitioned it and used one partition for Windows backup and the other partition is for storing data.

I moved a lot of data from my primary disk on to the partition on the new disk. Everything has been working fine until now.

This morning I booted up the computer and the new disk is not showing in Computer. I rebooted and checked the bios, the disk is showing there so I let the OS boot and then opened Disk Manager. The new disk is showing there too but now it appears as unallocated and not initialized.

How do I fix this and how do I fix Windows 7 so that it doesn't happen again? I really do not want to lose the data on the disk.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, i'm new on this forum. I was searching for an answer to this issue in a lot of threads but i didn't find something to fix it.

I built an external hd using the hard disk of my old laptop (Fujitsu MHV2120AH PL) and a Woxter i-Case 240.

When i connected it via USB i went to the Disk Manager and saw the unit as "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized". But there was something else, the disk has a size of 120GB but the Disk Manager shows only 700MB.

The Disk Manager didn't allowed me to format this partition and when I press on "Initialize disk" it didn't do anything.

I used a Linux Live CD and I had the same issue, i tried to create a new partition table but it didn't create it and GParted didn't allow me to create a new partition answering that i need a partition table first.

I tried with Diskpart without any result too.

This HD had an Windows XP installed on the old laptop and before dissamble it i made a quick format with the Bootable CD of my laptop. The quick format was interrupted when the program was copying the files necesary to install Windows XP.

Do you have any idea?

Answer:Unknown - Not Initialized Disk (External HD)

Hello Matterito!

You could try a couple of things: changing the enclosure, as this one's controller may be corrupt, or hooking up the disk directly to the computer.
Also, see if your USB drivers need updating.

Following this, it may be that your disk is just damaged. It could be just that the partition table is corrupted, so may be writing full zeros to the disk and repartitioning and reformatting it would help fix the issue. That is in the case that you don't need the information on the drive.

Hi empog,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It could be an either an issue with the harddrive itself or it is formatted in a partition which is not recognized by windows.

Once the harddrive is connected open command prompt and type diskpart and hit enter. Then type list disk and hit enter.

Whatever information is displayed kindly post a screenshot for the same.

I have an WD 1TB hard disk which failed to initialize recently. It gives me an I/O error message. I found a few old threads here with similar problem and tried out the suggested steps. I ran WD diagnostic tool and passed the Quick test and Extended test(Screenshot attached). I would like to avoid the zero test and formatting of my data if possible. The hard disk is almost full and recovering them after formatting would be really painful. I would be really grateful if someone could please help me out?

Is you have a empty hard drive kicking about or somewhere to store you data, move it all to there.
Then format you drive, see if that works.

I've been recovering data from three older internal hard drives for a friend, by way of an external HDD enclosure connected via USB to my laptop. It went well for the first two HDDs but the third, well ....

It's a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 HDD, 120 GB and is also marked SATA150.

(1) On most occasions, the HDD in question does not appear under My Computer. Under Devices and Printers, I see the external HDD enclosure as "USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge" (but not the HDD). In Disk Management, I see my internal drives and CD/DVD ROM but for the HDD in question, only "Disk 2, Unknown, Not Initialised" - I get the option to initialise it as MBR or GPT (I cancel at that point).

(2) On rare and seemingly random occasions, my laptop does pick up the HDD as drive F: but usually asks me if I want to format it (nope!). At this point it also appears under Devices and Printers, My Computer and in Disk Management as 'RAW' and 'healthy'.

(3) On three occasions, I have seen the drive name; on two occasions, all of the files - and on one occasion, I was able to copy four files across to my laptop (before losing visibility of it). So I know all the files are there.

However the HDD disconnects itself (or is disconnected) quite quickly, such that I am back to position (1) for the vast majority of the time.

I have tried TestDisk and EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which do not see the HDD. I have also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard, which mostly does not see the HDD but on one occa... Read more

Start with this free tool. You should try to recover the partition before worrying about recovering the data. If you can recover the partition, the files should be OK if they haven't been over-written.

Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

Select Partition Recovery Wizard. Choose the drive, then full disk, quick scan. Quick Scan may take 5 or more hours.

If the partition is eventually found, select and double click on it. You should then see all files in the Explorer.

I am trying to recover data from laptop internal HDD use as an external hard drive to recover data from that HDD. I can't see my HDD in my computer but in DISK Managemnet, there is a message, "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initizalized"

Please Help!!

Answer:Recover Data from Disk that is unknown and not initialized

If the data is critical, and it sounds like it is.. the first thing I would do is use a software that makes a sector by sector backup or image of that uninitialized drive. That way if trying to make it readable by initializing it should hose it, you have a copy.

After that, if you know that the unititialized drive was at one time formatted NTFS then you might try initializing it with Partition Wizard freeware

But it may be worthwhile to talk to someone well versed in disk recovery. There may even be some dedicated forums around for that specialty.

If you get lucky and the Partition Wizard initialization shortcut works, then the files should be there after doing a non-destructive format as NTFS file system.

Assuming that's what it was to begin with.

I have this 160GB hard drive that I have not been using for a while, yet I am very sure it was working fine the last time I used it.

Today when I plugged it in to my new notebook that is running Windows 8.1 now, it doesn't detect my hard drive. I also tried on other notebook and it has the same issue. So I know the problem is most likely on the hard drive.

Using Command Prompt, it says Disk 1's status is "Online", but size is "0".

Here is the status at Computer Management:
Disk 1
Not Initialized

I also tried to Initialize on MBR, but it returned me with "Incorrect function." message.

I tried "Troubleshoot" and the result says:
"USB Mass Storage Device is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0
Plug the device into an available USB 2.0 port..."
My notebook has 3 USB ports where according to the manual, 2 of them are backward compatible to 2.0... I tested on each, but it is still not working.

What should I do? Although I have not been using it for a while, I wish to check the content first before formatting it. I might have some forgotten, yet important files within.

Thanks in advance. Hope I can be assisted here.

If the controller in the enclosure failed removing the drive and slaving it into a desktop PC may let you recover your files. If the drive failed there isn't much you can do.

I am using windows 8 and I have read previous threads with similar issues that I face but my problem is unique. My 60GB external Hard disk was manufactured by FUJITSU and was taken out of a dell laptop. When I bought a case for it yesterday it was tested in a laptop computer to see if it was working before I paid for the case and it was working properly. However, the owner of the laptop removed the cable without safely ejecting the drive first. Later, I connected it to several computer and it would install and be detected in Device manager, Disk Management and even devices and printers but it does not show in My Computer nor does autoplay options pop up. In disk management it is shown as Disk 1 unknown not initialized as shown in the attached screenshot.

I notice that whenever i open disk management, it prompts me to initialize the disk but when i chose gpt and click ok, this window pops up

when I right click the Disk 1 the initialize option is gray and only offline, properties, and help are available. I used mini partition tool and this is what i get

I am at my wits end. Please assist. I do not need what is inside the hdd. I just want it to work.

I am experiencing the same issue as with jenny123 but with an additional problem. I am troubleshooting a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external hard drive for my buddy. It is previously working but one day, it is not detected anymore by any device. It is found in the Disk Management however, it is listed as Unknown, Not Initialized, and not showing the partition as shown in the screenshot.

When I try to change it from Offline to Online, I am encountering the error:
"Virtual Disk Manager: The system cannot find the file specified"

I also used the DISKPART in cmd but it is not showing Disk 1 as shown below.

The external hard drive is found in disk drives but it is not showing it's model name.

I tried all the recommended software (partition wizard, testdisk, icare) but still no luck. I also tried searching online for an answer but there's no closure to their issues as well. Hope someone can help on this as he need a) the drive and b) recover the files in the external drive. Thanks!

EDIT: The drive can be seen in the Devices and Printers as shown below.

Answer:Disk unknown, not initialized, and not showing partition

For any serious troubleshooting, diagnostics or recovery attempt, you should always connect an HDD to a direct SATA port. Usually you can easily remove the header of any Seagate Golex drive and then connect it to an internal SATA port.

Let us know what "Disk Management" reports when you connect the drive directly.

This drive was originally a Maxtor back-up drive that my brother in law could never get to accomplish a successful back-up routine when running on his XP desktop system or his new Vista laptop. He gave it to me and I installed upgraded software and tried it on my Vista x64 system and again recieved "back-up failed" error messages. I decided to delete all contents on the drive and use it as a basic external storage drive. My problem is now my system see's it as "Drive not yet initialized". How do I initialize this drive? It's a Maxtor One Touch III, 200 Gb.

Answer:Disk not initialized when trying to format external USB drive

Do it thru Disk Management...right click My Manage...then Disk Management.

Hi, I just got a new Y570 Laptop with a 64 gb ssd. In the disk management window, there are two hard drives listed. There is a disk 0, which has four partitions on it, and a disk 1 which is unknown and initialized. Disk 0 is the HDD that comes with the computer. When I try to initialize Disk 1, I get a message saying The disk cannot find the sector requested. What does this mean? Also, is disk 1 the ssd that I'm supposed to have? Another problem:On my hdd, I have an empty partition that says Healthy (OEM partition). It has no file system or letter assigned to it. It is 14.75 gb, and according to disk management, all 14.75 gb are free. What is it, and can I delete it without affecting anything else on my computer?

Answer:Y570 Unknown Disk 1 Not initialized/OEM Partition

hi galaxion2,first of all, do not delete the 14.75 gb partition. it's hidden/system partition that your computer will need to use it during one key recover process.secondly, as you noticed, disk1 is ssd.

I ran BIOS diagnostics on a Dell OptiPlex 3010 yesterday and received an error code (2000-0142) - short self test unsuccessful. I pulled the drive and swapped a new SATA drive to get the user back up and running quickly. I'm trying to connect the drive with the error to my laptop using a StarTech USB 2.0 to IDE SATA Adapter. When I open Disk Management I see Disk 0 (my laptop drive) and Disk 1 (the connected drive). It says Unknown / Not Initialized. When I right click and try to initialize it says "The device is not ready." I've tried the more actions > refresh / rescan. Now when I right click the option to Initialize Disk is grayed out and I can only see Offline and Properties.

I browsed through a thread from about 2 years ago and couldn't find a helpful solution.

The drive: Western Digital 250GB SATA / 16MB Cache - WD2500AAKX

Answer:Disk Management - Unknown / Not Initialized Drive

Have you attempted to run Western Digital's Data Lifeguard diagnostic software? It has a short test and an extended test.

Are you trying to recover anything from this drive? Or just trying to find out if it's broken?

I have used the tittle from another thread as my issue is very similar, only none of what is posted there worked for me.

So I have a WD 500gb HDD. (Actually I am not 100% sure it is a HDD and not a SDD)
I have plugged it in various PC and laptops. When doing so, you get the usual sound que. It also installs the driver according to the little pop up window.
However after that, the drive is not visible in "My Computer".

When I check the drive in Computer Management>Disk Management, it wants me to initialise the disk. Which, I know I do not want to do (thanks to one of your earlier posts) as this will over write my data.
In Disk Management the disk is "Unknown" and "Not Initialised" It also does not give any volume. Pics of both of these attached.

I have tried using Partition Wisord free. It does not even see the drive.
I have tried using Photorec. It does not see the drive.
I have used R-Studio. It does see the disk, but I am not able to scan it. Again also no disk volume. Again Picture attached.

I am hopeful for a solution, as I feel like the symptoms suggest that I do not have a head misalignment. But I might be wrong on that.

Hoping for someone with some mad skills to help me out here.

Thanks in advance!

Guys i have a similar problem but unlike the problem above my partition magic software does not read my external HD.. The device manager shows the HD is working properly.. and the disk manager shows DISK1 unknown and not initialized.. i m giving screen shot for both of them.. My external HD is WD 1TB HD.. it does not matter if i lose the data..but i want the HD to work

Answer:disk manager shows DISK1 unknown and not initialized

I had a Seagate drive fail suddenly last week -- a lot like the situation you described, and neither the Seagate nor the WD drive diagnostics even see the drive when it's in an external drive caddy. When I connect it to an internal drive cable, I get a SMART error and the PC hangs on the boot.

Have also tried Minitool Partition Wizard and some other data recovery apps, which CAN see the external drive, but they can't find or recover any partitions.

Suggest you check with Minitool as they offer a free trial of a data recovery app that might work for you.

This is the first time in years that I've had a drive fail and NONE of the data recovery apps have been able to find anything on the drive.

I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery service and am awaiting a quote.

4. The Data Lifeguard Diagnostic from western digital managed to detect my external and showing there is bad sector but when i tried to repair, it give me this message -unable to repair bad sector-

Please help!!! is there any chance i can fix this?

Answer:Please help, disk 1 unknown not initialized (western digital external)

I guess there is mechanical problem with the hard drive. you can try checking and repairing bad sectors (, or just send it to some drive repair center.
but, if there is important files on the drive, you'll have to recover data before repairing it.

Hi there, this drive is power fed trough the USB cable. So if the cable is damaged or too long it could cause the drive to malfunction. Otherwise it could be a damaged partition or a failed drive. I hope it will be a power issue, as it will be easier to resolve.
Have you tried:
- using a different USB cable (the shorter the better),
- connect it to a different usb port on the PC and make sure all other usb fed devices are unplugged at the time;
- if it's a desktop make sure to use a usb port that is on the back of the PC.
- connecting it to a different PC with a different OS

It will be useful if you give a bit more information. Can you hear any unusual noises from the drive? Have you dropped it recently? Do you remember making any changes before it stopped working ?
You can also check this topic: FAQ: External hard drive no longer shows up in My ... - WD Community

Hi all, Let me start off by saying i have spent the last few hours looking online for anything that would be able to help sort out my problem and found your forum the most helpful and the only one i have signed up to. So thankyou in advance.

I have a WD1200D036 (2.5 120GB external) that is not showing in My Computer nor was it showing up in DM but after going to device management\Disk Drives then Volumes tab and clicking on Populate it turned up in Disk Management as: Disk 1 Unkown not initialized. when i click on it and select initialize disk it opens up and asks me to select disk 1 and what partition style (I just sent with MBR) then click ok. It pops up with a error "Incorrect Function"

Any ideas??

I would suggest verifying the health condition of your hard drive first. You can use "WD Data Life Guard Diagnostic" to do that.

Download : WD Support / Downloads / Legacy Internal / WD RE2

The WD tool will list both your internal HDD and USB HDD for testing. Select the USB one and choose "Extended Test" to run. Let us know the test result in next reply.

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

My external hard disk (Seagate) is detected in the task bar after connecting, but not visible in "My Computer".

It is visible in Device manager under Disk Drives but not under USB.

There are few threads in this forum which are similar to mine, except that their Drives are visible in the Disk Management as Unallocated Space, mine is not.

I've tried all tools, tried in Windows XP still no solution.

Is there any way to atleast recover the data !!!!!!!!!

Your reply is appreciated !!!!!!!!

This quick new hard disk. So sad I cant access it anymore? why this happen?

You can see from the photo MY computer cant even see this driver anymore, so I check on the
- Disk management it said unknown no driver letter too ,Not initialized.
-Click Initialized it said i/o device error

I have try uninstall the device and restart let it install again still the same.
Checking many thread have the same problem, I wonder anyone solve this kind of problem before?
Update the possible cause of it, I believe my external hard disk spoil because my laptop was low battery and suddenly off either it goes Hibernate or off there is no time to read or write in the hard disk.
Then I just unplug the external hard disk.

If you face this situation don't unplug it, turn on the computer back and do a proper remove or shut down everything.

I am trying to recover data from my external HD 1 TB Fantom Drive GreenDrive. It crashed and I had no choice to force power down. When I look into Disk Management - I see that Disk 1 Unknown Size Not Initialized.

See Disk Man.JPG for printscreen of Disk Management.

I tried following the Mini Partition Tool advice and did not find the external drive on the software. Please see Mini Partion Tool.JPG for print screen.

I am thinking about buying another external HD 2TB and clone this drive to recover the data. Any advice to clone a drive that I cannot select.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:Fantom Drives GreenDrive Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized - Data Recove

It crashed

I've seen that and the HDDs had truly crashed, wasn't anything I could do but in a couple of instances I sent them off to a firm that recovers data if the platters/disks in them haven't been physically damaged. Sometimes the read-write heads will scratch the platters and they are then truly screwed up.

I had this flash drive since last year. I always download movies, t.v. series and anime. After I have watched all that I have downloaded, I always delete it and it also appears in the recycle bin so I also deleting it to not waste memory.

Last March 27, after I download and move the files in my USB. When I went back to my renting house, I tried to watch the t.v. series that I have downloaded in a DVD(XViD format). Unfortunately, the DVD can't read my flash drive.

I attached my USB to a computer and then suddenly, it was not detected by Windows Explorer but appears in Disk Management saying that it is "not initialized, unallocated drive."

I do Google searching and I found this forum, I found out that I should use a partition recovery software. I tried but when I scanned my drive, it always stops at "7-8k of 62530624 sectors." I don't know why but I think my flash drive was damaged.

Is there any other way I can fix it?
My important files are inside there.

Hope that any one can help

Fresh install of Windows 10 on Dell Inspiron M5030 from my KLite USB drive where I have only added the correct, workable AMD-4200 video driver to the normal Windows 10 ISO. Windows 10 is functioning properly EXCEPT my TSST DVD+/-RW TS-L633C shows in Device Manager as DISK DRIVE 01 (which of course is not initialized) instead of showing as TS-L633C in DVD/CD-ROM drives.

I have tried the following:

1: Online updating drivers.

2: Hardware and devices troubleshooter. My problem is not recognized.

3: Uninstall CD/DVD drive driver. Restarted the computer, checked the functionality and the same problem exists.

Per device Manager, I have the standard SATA ACHI controller installed but no ATA channels 1, 2, 3, or 4 and no Standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA driver. Since Dell has not "approved" the M5030 for Windows 10, there are no drivers on the Dell M5030 Support website for Windows 10.

Can someone please give me some help please so that I can solve my problem?

Thank you very much.

I thought this was fixed but "Disk 1 not initialized" error has popped up again. Not sure what to do. I was cleaning out data off this drive & moved it to another. Thankfully I believe I finished before this error began popping up again.

"Disk 1 not initialized" I'm not sure if I should select MBR or GPT or leave it alone & do something else. It was formatted NTFS with about half of 1.5Tb capacity of data on it.

Is the drive dying or perhaps my new install has installed the wrong driver. Driver Version is Microsoft dated 6/21/2006 v10.0.15063.332
The motherboard is Asus Prime X370-Pro & Asus describes the SATA as;
AMD X370 chipset :
8 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s),

I do not use the RAID setup.

I have installed the chipset package from AMD for the X370 chips. It would seem the proper driver would have been installed but (?).
Any suggestions?

My PC wouldn't boot off the SSD (with Win 10 OS). It said there were boot problems and tried to diagnose the problem but it doesn't boot. I'm now using the original HD with Win 7. I'd like to get the SSD working if I can. The SSD is OCZ - 240 GB or so.

But between last night and today, the SSD has gotten worse. I can't access it at all now. Last night I was able to access it as an external drive. What I did in between was a chkdsk of the HD just to make sure it was OK. Then this morning I saw that the SSD had problems.

Disk Management shows the SSD as disk 1, but it has no information on it. It just says the disk is unknown and uninitialized.

I saw a recommendation for Partition Wizard 9.1 Free. But that doesn't show the drive at all. I attached screen shots as a Word document.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ways I try:

2)I try to unchecked the hide folder and device at view.
3)I try to update the software BUT it still disfunction.
4)I try to use disk management and initialized it BUT there appeared CANNOT INITIALIZED Due to I/O device error.

Any solution for me ?

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

Answer:WD EXTERNAL HARD DISK 1TB suddenly "unallocated" and "not initialized"

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

OK. So this was handed to me by my daughter. She said her pc wouldnt boot. Would go to the splash screen then nothing...
After playing with it, I realised this was due to a problem with the secondary HDD. I removed it and it booted fine. Problem is she has a lot of pics and docs that need to be saved from this drive. Her daughter (my granddaughter) decided she liked to play with the buttons and turned the pc off and on repeatedly which done something to this HDD...

So I connected the HDD to my computer using a gadget that allows me to connect it via USB. now when I go into windows explorer theres nothing there. However, if I go into the computer management app I see it there but is "not initiated". I am at a loss of how to initiate it. Not to mention how to recover the data on the disk...

I appreciate any help you can give me!

Answer:HDD Not initialized!

It is possible that the drive suffered an internal hardware failure that prevents the PC from booting when it is connected internally. And also may have cause the drive uninitialized when connected to your PC via a USB adapter/enclosure. It is possible that an attempt to use data recovery applications would still unable to detect the drive and might further lead to permanent data loss.
In that case, If that data on that drive are much of importance and irreplaceable then a professional data recovery service might have chances to recover your files. You can try consult as they might be able to provide you an honest evaluation about your problem.

I've done this a dozen times before, I have a USB kit that allows me to connect IDE or Sata drives. I wanted to give my laptop a boost, so I removed its slow 5400 rpm HD, and was going to install a spare SSD I have laying around. Instead of doing a fresh install of Win 7, I was going to just clone the drives. But when I plugged in the USB connector the drive was not shown in My Comp, so I went to disk mang, where is showed as disk 7 and not initialized. I tried to tried to initialize, but it just says device not ready.

Answer:Not initialized - HD

You may have to attach it to an actual SATA port to initialize it.

I say this because I have the same problem with a USB to SATA adapter. If the disk hasn't been partitioned, it won't partition when connected up to the USB adapter. I have to initialize it inside my computer on a real SATA port. It's a pain, but it's the only way to get mine to work, and it's been true of several drives. It might be that yours is the same.

HDD is 'not initialized'
i recently had a problem where my HDD (Seagate 7200.11 640gb) disappeared from My Computer and despite seemingly spinning up ok, it would not access its data, and would not be indentified. I looked a bit more in detail and found the drive was actually showing under Disk Management, not under its drive name, but as its serial number.....and albeit with its disk type as 'unknown' (as opposed to basic or Foreign) and also with the status as 'not initialized'.

I have Windows Vista running.

I looked on a freinds PC (his is Windows XP) and it also showed in Disk Manager, this time with its staus as 'unreadable'.

i have not attempted to actually initialize the disk as yet mainly because it says it will do something to the master boot record.

i have 400gb of my data on this drive and i thought i would ask advice first as the data is not backed up, any suggestions on my next move are it ok to simply go on and initialize the disk, therefore getting my data back?

This is popping up as a VB6 error, so I would try installing the latest one:

Since the error goes to the monitor, you might be sure your drivers are current. This would include your video card and motherboard.

Question: Not Initialized

An external hard drive is not being recognized in My Computer but the drive does appear in disc management. It says not initialized.
What does this mean? If I do this will I loose data?

Answer:Not Initialized

If you initialize it, it will wipe it out.
Then it'll want you to format it, which will surely wipe it out.

This usually is due to a problem with the disk, but I have had the external drive circuitry go bad - yet the hard drive is still good (happens to me with W-D MyBooks). The only sure way to see is to crack the case open and check the hard drive with another connector.

Hi, I had my second HDD's pin broke (1 pin in the middle) and could not load into window with my first HDD (OS xp) but after a few attempt by trying to fix it manually by sticking the broken pin into the original IDE's cable slot and hoping it close the circuit between the cable and HDD's pin.
Well it did load up to window but still it didn't work 100%, right now my second HDD is detected only in Computer Management and saying HDD Not Initialized, its gave an option to Initialize but getting an error every time I did so. Beside that its didn't give me any other option to format nor creating new partition except a dead end to Initialized.

Help me out here guyz, right now I'm losing my HDD and my files... and how am I about to get all the files back...

Answer:HDD Not Initialized

So which pin exactly was it?

A simple solution would be to get an identical hard drive and replace the PCB.

A more elaborate solution would be to have some skilled electronics guy solder a brand new IDE connector to the drive.

In my never ending quest to recover data from my now defunct external hard drive I've attempted to install a new drive of the same make and size. (western digital wd2000) However, instead of buying an external I purchased an internal. However, the circuit board for the external plugs into the new drive and seems to be working.

Windows explorer doesn't see it. Re-booting and it's still invisible.

Device manager does see it. When I select the volume tab and populate I see the "drive not initialized" message. All other tabs and messages indicate it's there and working.

Where do I go from here???

ps. My ultimate goal is to replace the disc's from the broken external with this new internal. Frankly, I may have bitten off more than I should be chewing but life is an adventure and this may just be one of those.......

Answer:Drive not initialized

I've heard of this neat trick. Put your drive in a bucket of ice, then run it. Seems to work wonders.

Hey everyone. I've seen that you guys are a lot more technical than I tend to see in other forums when lurking, so I'm going here instead of the WD forums (because their official techs just want you to mail the drive in without trying anything).

System: Lenovo T60, Win 8, Win 7 on secondary partition, WD Elements 2TB External HDD.

Lets assume for the meantime that unless worst comes to worst, I don't have access to a desktop, and I DO want to keep the files on the drive.

So here's my issue! I have a WD Elements 2TB external HDD.
After a few months of usage, the drive no longer shows up in My Computer.
It still appears in the Device Manager, but now under a different name: "Ext HDD 1021"
I've tried replacing the USB cord, and the power supply as well (I have an unrelated, functional external enclosure that also uses a 12V 1.5A Pos-In power supply that fit perfectly, and the broken drive did all the same things as it did with the old power supply)
It appears in Safely Remove Hardware under the same name
In the Disk Management utility, as soon as I open it up it has a popup that says "You must initialize the disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it"
When I select "MBR" at this window, it says Access Denied.
I'm following the FAQ's here and I get to step 6, the rest after this one don't apply.
Using Windows 8's command line in admin mode, diskpart told me that the disk exists, it knows the ... Read more

Hey all,

I have a Gateway 300s series pc.
Crucial and gateway's site both say the system can handle a maximum of 1 gig (2 - 512 dimms). The system currently has 256. I added a 512 mg dimm of pc133 non-ecc.

When it boots it still shows 256 and the bios shows the 2nd slot as not initialized.

I've upgraded the bios to the latest and cleared the cmos to try and kick start it.
It beeps if i try and boot with just the 512 dimm installed.

Any thoughts?

hi guys,

i have been having tremendous amounts of hastle with trying to play MMORPG's on my home computer. Just for the record:

I'm running Windows XP SP2
Nvidia GForce MX 400
Intel Celeron 2.26GHZ processor

I have tried both World of warcraft and Starwars galaxies and on both games i recieve similar messages that say DirectX could not be initialised. I have checked some other posts and made changes such as; installing the latest Nvidia drivers from their website, turning hardware acceleration to full, changing the AGParperture size to 64mb in BIOS and i have installed the latest version of DirectX. I was using an intergrated graphics card when this problem started and even after changing to an AGP i still recieve this error. I am assuming therefore it is a software problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, if u need my personal email then contact me,

Answer:DirectX could not be initialized - wow and SWG

Just for anyone else who may be having the same sort of problem, i read that it occurs frequently with the PCI GDIHOOK5 graphics adapter. I found the solution online, it involves modifying a registry file so be careful:

"I had this same problem on a Dell Latitude...Fixed it by changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\DCI changed Timeout value to 7, it was set at zero."

Ever since i changed it both games have been running really fast and smoothly. Hope i could help anyone else though with this info.

I have an Asus Vivotab Smart running full Win8.1 and a Western Digital My Passport 2TB external HDD. The hard drive works fine on other computers running 7, 8 and 8.1. The tablet can read other hard drives fine as well. But this one hard drive will not function on just the tablet. I've tried deleting the drivers and letting Windows reinstall them as well as installing the latest drivers from the WD site. I've tried using a different cord, a different adapter and other USB devices on the tablet. The HDD shows up in Devices and Printers when plugged in but not Explorer and NOT Disk Management at all. Now if I delete the drivers it appears in Disk Management as an offline and not initialized drive, no drive letter. I can't initialize it and trying to set it to Online results in an an I/O error. When i unplug it and plug it back in Windows appears to be reinstalling it, but then it's back to not appearing in Disk Management at all.

This occurred when it was just Win 8. I upgraded to 8.1 and it worked for about 8 hours. The drive installed and functioned 100% after upgrading to 8.1.....and then just stopped working again. Same issue. Again, the drive works fine in every other computer I connect it to. Every other drive and USB device works fine when connected to this tablet. Just this one drive on this one tablet refuses to initialize.

Any ideas?

Answer:Wd External HDD Not initialized

Tablet might not have enough power thru USB, smaller devices could work and this one is probably pulling too much. If that's the case you can connect it thru an USB splitter with it's own 5V power supply but that won't make it as portable.

I already have multiple HDDs installed and, yesterday, added 3 new WD20EARS to the system. All three appeared to initialize correctly.

-After a reboot, only two of the new drives were recognized. In Disk Manager the third drive is/was listed as "disk not initialized".
-Tried re-initializing the drive multiple times and got a couple of different errors, "incorrect action" (or similar wording). At this point the system crashed.
-After a system restore, the third drive is not visible at all. The other two new drives seem to be operating normally.

System is an i3-540, Gigabyte GA 57M USB3, Ultimate 64.

What should I try?

Hay guys,
I have a WD external with a password property. When i plug it in my laptop it works fine but after i type the password the laptop freezes for a moment then the external gets disconnected and the process starts all over again and sometimes the autoplay message shows up (after i unlock the external) and when i try to open it the laptop also freezes and a message shows up saying: "parameters are incorrect". When i opened disk management (after reading posts from many websites) i found that the external is UNALLOCATED and NOT INITIALIZED.
Can any one pleeeeeeeease help me?

Answer:unallocated - not initialized

Not enough info.

Have you been using the external successfully before? As well as successful password entry?
Did you just receive it and now want to try to use it?
Do you want to maintain the password security?
Do you have data on it that would kill you to lose?
Have you been disconnecting it while its been mounted in the operating system? (That is not good)

If just received, & no data worries, why not try to initialize it in Disk Mgmt and give it a letter?

Hi there,

So I had a desktop with a single HDD running windows XP, the desktop overheated and automatically shutoff. The next time I powered on the PC, nothing happened - no BIOS, no beeps, nothing! The PC was pretty old so I just figured it had run it's course and I was thinking about getting a laptop anyway.

So I got a new Windows 7 laptop, and after a few days of setting it up I yanked out the hdd from the old XP desktop and plugged it into the laptop's USB port via some SATA to USB cables.

Win7 recognized new hardware and and seemed to install the drive correctly as "USB Storage", but nothing ever appeared in the Windows Explorer. I opened up the device manager and under 'Disk Drives' I saw a 'USB Drive' item. The properties on that item seemed to indicate all the drivers and such were properly installed and the 'device was working properly'. Under the 'Disk Management' section, the disk showed up - but it said it was 'unknown' and 'not initialized', so no partitions showed up (it also prompted me to 'initialize' it, which I DID NOT do).

At this point I've tried several recovery programs, but the biggest issue is that none of the programs actually see the drive, so I can't run the recovery at all. I even tried Hiren's Boot CD, but again, nothing sees the drive - although, I think that I didn't properly install the USB drivers, so I may try that... Read more

About 5 days ago my Seagate 3TB Barracuda HDD started running very slow. Transfer speeds dropped to 182kb/s it previously was around 25.6mb/s. So I started backing up as much as I could, but after 5 days and only getting about 300GB backed up I decided to run chkdsk on the drive. That was a bad idea because now I cannot access the drive at all, and I still have 2.12TB of data that isn't backed up.

Hey all. I just got a new SSD to install into my laptop. Toshiba Q Series Pro HDTS325XZSTA 2.5". I bought an external casing for the HDD for when I replaced it, but to clone the Laptop software over, I have the SSD in the external case for now.

When I went to Disk Manager to get it setup, I right-clicked and initialized it under MBR. It's assigned a drive letter. However, it shows No Media and a size of 0, both on my PC with USB 2.0 (Windows 7) and my laptop USB 3.0 (Windows 8).

I have plenty of time to return this drive for a new one if that's the case, but I want to know if I'm doing something wrong before I go through that process. I've never had this kind of problem before.

Greetings, I will cut right down to the issue at hand seeing that I've spent two hours on this so far and no luck. The drive worked perfectly yesterday. It might of been connected through the USB port when I had an error screen (blue screen) about my SD port and then the system restarted itself. I guess the external HD failure could come from this. At the same time, even the active torrents I had, on my internal HD with no link to my external one, got deleted from Utorrent.

I have followed Jumanji steps from another thread regarding the MiniTool Partition Wizard as well as TestDisk. TestDisk does not list Mybook in the drives list nor does chkdsk command. Here are the screenshots. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:WD My Book Not initialized / Unallocated

Hello DeadlyKnight and I am sorry to hear about the My Book! :/

Unfortunately, if the drive was connected to the system in the moment of the BSOD happening, it really could be a good enough reason for the drive's state now. The Cyclic redundancy check normally occurs because of damaged or faulty drives.

Additionally, the MiniTool software shows the drive as “Bad disk”. So retrieving the data may be hard for home environment. You could try booting a Linux-based Live CD and checking if the drive is there and accessible.

Otherwise, you may have to turn to professional data recovery help, if you need the data from the drive. :/ WD has partners in the field:

I'm not even sure what the topic title should be. But I can tell you about my problem.
I plugged in a new Bipra 250 GB NTFS external Hard Drive with the intention of using it to clone my C Drive.  A scan of the new drive reported no errors.  However, when I tried to run AOMEI Backupper it quit with this message:
Information Code:4120
Failed to adjust partition size.
Although I could see the drive when I clicked on Safely Remove Hardware, I could not find the drive in Explorer.
In Device Manager the disk was listed as Mass Storage Device USB Device.  I tried updating the driver, but MS says the driver is up to date.
In Disk Management, the disk showed  as Disk 1  Basic Online.   232.88 GB  - Unallocated.
Online I found information that said to right click the drive and choose New Simple Volume.  I did that. It ran. Still the drive goes unrecognized and I am unable to clone it.
I tried a reboot with the drive plugged in.  When Windows started, I could see the drive in Explorer but a message said:  Location not available.
Well, dirty word. -- And now that is gone too and the drive once more shows as unallocated in Disk Management.
More info online tells me to partition the drive after running New Simple Volume. But now I'm afraid to do that, and I don't know why that is necessary.

Answer:T61: fingerprint device could not be initialized

Assuming you have the latest BIOS and latest compatible version of ThinkVantage Fingerprint software, we've witnessed intermittent issues when users begin tweak their BIOS and enable non existent parallel ports or tamper with the PCI management settings, the issue with the reader malfunctioning then woking after a restart has been caused XP detecting previously disabled serial ports and InfraRed reader that actually conflicts with the internal biometric device. Rebooting can but now always reenable the fingerprint reader since XP realizes the conflict and "soft" disables the newly BIOS enabled IR,  SerialPort or Parallel port. A quick troubleshooting method is reset the BIOS to all defaults while taking note of whether the IR, Serial, or Parallel port is enabled in your default BIOS profile then reboot. This method works for us 100% of the time since we've never experienced a failed finger sensor in our inventory  and resetting the BIOS along with wagging our finger at the end user has effectively solved this issue.

I recently had a horrible virus on my computer to the point where I reformatted and reinstalled xp pro. When I did this I re arranged my harddrives (I have 3) so that the C drive was a 10gb just for the os and other important programs. Originally the C drive was about a 40 gb seagate barracuda 7200 but i moved that and made it into a slave. I did not reformat it when I did the switch up so when I reinstalled xp pro the virus was still in the drive. xp installed fine with no noticeable ill effects from the drive with the virus but when I went to reformat the virus drive it popped up an "error failed to reformat. please try again" or something like that right as it finished. Then something came up and ask me to restart so I did and when I got back on the drive was practically nonexistant. Make sure you have the latest DirectX installed, and the latest drivers for your integrated graphics card.

The error indicates that the onboard graphics doesn't have some of the hardware capabilities required to run the game but that might just be an error caused by software (bad or old drivers) - I don't see why the Unichrome graphics couldn't play the game, unless it requires advanced shaders or something.
