I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It would be helpful to know what you are calling a "caddy" and how it is connected to the notebook, and what OS you have installed.

Hello dear Lenovo community, I've been having a problem regarding an HDD caddy for about two months now. After deciding I wanted to make my G510 a little bit faster, I bought a Kingston 240GB SSD (don't think the brand is needed) to put instead of the SSHD I previously had. Of course 240 GB is not that much. I only wanted it for the Windows partition. So, I also bought an HDD caddy to put it instead of the ODD (Optical Disk Drive). So far so good. Everything came and I made the swap. The SSD inside the original place of my SSHD and then I removed the ODD to put the HDD caddy with the SSHD in it. The problem is, it is not recognized when booting. The laptop just hangs/freezes at the Lenovo logo. I tried to switch places (SSHD in its original place and SSD in HDD caddy) and to my suprise, both of the drives were recognized, but I could not format my SSD and access it whatsoever. I discovered a workaround where I put the ODD tray back in, start Windows from the SSD, then while booted and loaded, I take the ODD tray out and insert the HDD caddy with the SSHD. Then, Intel Rapid Storage recognizes it and my drives are correctly shown. The problem is when I shutdown the laptop and turn it back on, I go back to my first problem, which is freezing Lenovo logo. The only way I can work with this, is if I just restart or put the laptop in Stand by. Even when I put it in Stand-by, sometimes the SSHD gets disconnected and I have to do the ODD tray thing again. Hi,I have replaced CD-ROM by HDD Caddy with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 250GB) in my Lenovo ThinkPad L440 (20ASS3GT0) as a second storage device (not one with the OS). When I'm trying to start the system, I'm getting a message "Configuration changes - restart the system." and the system reboots again and again. What is more, I can't access the BIOS any more - pressing F1 does not work. Updating to the newest version of BIOS (1.85) does not help. After removing HDD Caddy everything works fine. I have tried some of the configurations below: Removed the battery, pressed the power button for 10-15 sec. and rebooted with AC Adapter connected - still got message "Configuration changes - restart the system."Removed HDD from standard SATA port and connected it using HDD Caddy - cannot boot into the system. There is no message "Configuration changes...", HDD is detected but it is not on the list with bootable devices (there is only one option to boot over the LAN).HDD Caddy connected with no storage device - boot into the system with no problem. The problem is, that I need two storage devices - one for the OS and second one (using HDD caddy) for another data. Could anyone help me to solve that issue?

Hey guys. I'm using my Lenovo g510. Once I decided to obtain a better performance on my device by changing HDD for SSD. I wanted also to use both of drives so I bought caddy adapter like this]([click here to put my HDD and replace with my DVD-ROM.
My problem is when I enter to BIOS I can only see my SSD which is located in main slot.In device manager I changed storage controller from IDE to AHCII, reinstalled Windows 10.
Usually from coldboot (I mean when my laptop is turned off from longer time)usually there is no possibility to see partitions from my HDD in My Computer or device manager. Sometimes when my HDD partitions are visable in my computer and I will log off (close laptop) and strat laptop again the partitions are visable and I can enter to them, i can see folders but I can see files or I can see files but cant open them.
In device manager-> disk drives my HDD once is visible
once isn't.
I started to looking some guides in Internet. I tried to make a changes in regedit like in guides but there is one value which is not saving. HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStorV\StartOverride. When I change value of 0 from "3" to "0" and reboot the value restores itself back to "3".
I checked from some guides again and I tried to grant ownership to my account or something like this but it won't work (or I just did something wrong)
I don't know really it's hardware or software issue. Maybe it's too much memory for my laptop, maybe BIOS don't support two adap... Read more

Hello. I am going to buy Lenovo 320-15IKB with no optical drive. Also I would like to change the standart HDD for SSD and use this HDD as a second hard drive. Therefore, I would like to ask if i may add the HDD using caddy adapter even if there is no optical drive in the model. There is no problem with opening laptop, but i would like to ensure that the space of DVD is empty and could be used. In the second place, I am not sure if there are all cable connections in there. I mean if there is a SATA connector which corresponds to DVD drive in other models. Another possible problem is the way to fix caddy to the motherboard. Normally it can be fixed by a metal part and a screw form the optical drive. But by not having dvd rom, would it be possible? In the case of having the hole, where may I get the metal part and the screws needed? And finally, would it fit using a standart 9.0 mm caddy? Or the only option is to use my HDD as an external hard? Thanks in advance PS. And another little question about RAM-memory. Would those models work well in it? Are they compatible? Which one would be better? (I believe that HyperX sue to CL13)1. HyperX Impact HX421S13IB/8 https://www.inet.se/files/pdf/5310120_0.pdf2. Kingston KCP421SS8/8

Hello,i have problems with my Lenovo B50-80, running Windows 10.Before this Laptop, i had a HP with a SSD. I replaced the 1000 GB HDD from the Lenovo against the SSD.Next step was to replace the ODD against a HDD Caddy with the 1000 GB HDD.The Problem is, that the HDD is not running. The HDD is visible in Disk Management, but i cant initialize it. It also shows up as "unknown".If i try to initialize it as GPT, a warning shows up, that say that the size of the Disk is to small for GPT. Initializing with MBR there comes warning that System cant find data. Dont know what that means.I thought maybe the HDD is destroyed ore something like that. So i tried it with my tower PC directly connectet via SATA and it worked fine. I also formated the disk with the Tower. Then i tried again with the HDD Caddy and the Laptop but it did not work.In Device Manager it shows up and says, the disk is running without Problems. In Disk Part, the HDD sometimes shows up (with 0 Mb) and sometimes not (which is strange...)In Testdisk, i cant see the HDD. Does anybody know where this problem comes from?Maybe it has something to do with energy savings? Like switching of the ODD when not used? I tried the whole day, but did not find a solution or wokaround. (sorry for bad english)

Hi all. I just bought a B50-70 laptop and I thought I upgrade it with a SSD. I bought a caddy and a 120GB Kingston Hyper X Fury and I installed it in the DVD-ROM slot after removing the DVD drive. The problem is that Windows 8.1 does not properly detect this drive. Under Disk Management in Administrative Tools, the drive shows up with a down red arrow and when I try to create a MBR on it, an error message pops up with an I/O error. I have the latest BIOS firmware from Lenovo. A Windows 8.1 installation disk does not recognize this drive as a valid on to install the OS on. The SSD works fine in another PC and it is properly detected by the B50-70 BIOS. My question is: does the B50-70 actually support a SSD via a caddy instead of the DVD-ROM? What can I do for this drive to work? Please help!

Try swapping the drives.Connect the SSD to the mainboard's SATA port to check if this helps with proper setting up. Then, try the hard drive in the caddy and see if there are any problems. If you encounter any, buy an external drive rack and use the HDD with it.

Hello, I recently bought a 256gb SSD and a caddy for the ultrabay slot.  I was wondering should I place the Hybrid drive and place the SSD into the spot it once took? I plan on moving windows to the SSD and frequently used programs/games. I just want to make sure which method is safer. I'm wondering because I might reset my computer since it refuses to download needed updates or it says it has the update but, windows won't reconize it, to upgrade to windows 8.1 then windows 10.

Maximum RAM Capacity is 8GB
I suggest you check the installed RAM on your system, Since you have 6GB
You might already have 2 slots used. one 4GB and one 2GB
you might end up removing the 2GB and Replace it with identical 4GB to max it up

Hello everyone, I'm getting my first Laptop after many years of being a Desktop user and I have some question on how to do things here.First I'm getting a Lenovo Y580, model #59359513, which only comes with a 1TB 5400 rpm hard drive, there is no msata SSD but I believe I have the option to install one later.Right now I'm planning in adding a Samsung 840 Pro link from newegg.com, where the hard drive is, and get a hard drive caddy for the hard drive to have it as storage. Now my questions are: 1. How is the connectors to install a SSD on a laptop, is it just plug and go, is it simple as removing the hard drive and adding the SSD to it or do I have to get adapter of some kind? If I do Please let me know which one. 2. I have been reading and I see lots of people that are using caddy, is adding the SSD to the caddy not the other way around like I want to do it, is there a reason to it? 3. Some people are complaining about heat issues and saying that using it with a SSD + caddy will help to solve that, but keeping the hard drive generate heat the same way, doesn't it? 4. Please suggest me a good caddy for the Y580, I dont know which one to buy yet. 5. If I have the option to add a msata SSD later, I read somewhere that I might have to get some screws to it, does anyone knows anything about it? Thank you.

Answer:Lenovo Y580 + SSD + Caddy, questions.

1. SSD has SATA interface connector like your HD; so replace and install OS.  No adapter needed.2. Caddy is needed if you want to use optical drive space as space to hold the SSD/HD inside laptop.  -- I'm understanding your getting a hard drive caddy is to have it as external enclosure, right?  If external enclosure is not what you had in mind, then you do need a optical drive caddy to hold the HD as extra storage and lose the optical drive.3. screw holding the mSATA is standard like the rest, so it shouldn't be too hard to get one - if not, scavenge from one of the screw holding the HD (haven't checked this myself).

Hi Everyone, I own an x201 tablet for good few years now, I upgraded the internal drive to a Lenove 128GB drive back  then, I upgraded again to a bigger Samsung 840 500GB few days ago, I purchased a drive caddy for the ultrabase to help in the migration and to use it with the older 120GB SSD,  I put the new SSD in the drive caddy and it was recognized with no problem, I cloned the older SSD with no issues at all, now to the problem I am facing, when I replace the 128 GB drive in the ultrabay caddy it cannot be seen by the bios, when I replace the new SSD drive with the Old one the laptop boots up fine (so there is no problem with the old SSD drive). I tried couple other HDDs with the caddy and they all worked fine, but not the Lenovo 128GB SSD,  The link on Lenovo website states the 128GB SSD should work with the ultrabase, I bought an aftermaket caddy asuming they are compatible though,   http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-73170http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-70903 I have the most recent bios version (1.4),  Any idea what might be wrong? Many thanks

Answer:Lenovo B40-30 - Adding a DVD Drive or HHD Caddy

hi calum

Welcome to the Forums.

Looking inside the unit via this B40-30 Video Disassembly Guide, this system uses an ODD connector board that attaches to the motherboard and into the ODD.

- Link to picture

If you'll be going for an HDD caddy, I would recommend you get the B40-30 with an ODD so that you won't have any issues  attaching a caddy as there's no guarantee that this connector is present with a B40-30 with a dummy ODD..

Hope this helps.

hi itachi_tarik,

Is this item the HDD caddy that you purchased? I've encountered the same issue using that same universal caddy and getting a replacement sorted the problem.

In addition, is the stock HDD 1TB? If yes, then it's also possible that the HDD caddy that you purchased doesn't support 1TB. To verify, try inserting the SSD in the HDD caddy and observe if it's detected in the BIOS.

Welcome to the Forums.

From page 103 of the G580 HMM, the ODD is a 12.7mm so a 12.7mm HDD caddy should do the trick.
 - Sample item

As for the SSD, most users I've seen uses a 2.5" Samsung SSD so it'll be best if you go with this brand too for best cmopatibility.

Thought I'd share my experience with installing an SSD to a Lenovo Z710 ideapad. I am by no means an expert but just a fellow community DIYer that wanted a performance upgrade for my notebook. It is a little long to read but when doing any changes to electronics, I think details are very important. This tutorial is for a fresh install of a Windows 7 x64 CD onto the SSD via my standard optical drive. After reading the forums about cloning issues and dual boot problems with the original HDD, I have decided that doing a fresh install of windows would work best for me. Who likes Windows 8 for a non-touchscreen notebook anyway? So first of all, you need an SSD. I bought myself a 250gb Samsung 850 EVO sata III SSD. You can find these for ~$100 now on amazon, newegg, microcenter, etc.If you plan to use your original HDD as a secondary storage drive, you will also need an HDD caddy. I found one on eBay for $8 shipped. You just need to search for the 9.5mm universal sata HDD caddy. You do not need any other cables.STEPS:1) Pop your Windows 7 install disc into your optical drive. Shut down your notebook completely, unplug the wall charger, remove the battery, and flip the notebook over.2) Remove the bottom cover by unscrewing 3 screws: 2 on the top corners and 1 in the center. Then gently slide the cover down away from the battery compartment. This will expose all the internal components.3) The HDD is in the bottom left corner secured by a metal cover. Unscrew the 4 screws holding the H... Read more

Hi I have a serious problem. I was buyed caddy to my cd / dvd rom bay. When I run any of my disk it get same error. When I add caddy in to my PC and no matter if it's OS disk or secondary disk they "works" about 5-15 minutes.  When I do nothing with disk, just let him connect without any I/O operations (here It's only my though, because Windows can run some hidden process, I don't know, but they are absolutely quiet), they can live in my OS for forever. BUTWhen I for example start copying music from disk on my PCI to this disk in caddy / extarnal disk it starts copy at full speed, but with every socond of transfer connection get slower.BUT 2.a) When it's OS disk in my caddy OS get slower too and finally gets BSOD after about 15 minutes . b) When it's just external disk the whole operation stuck, but If I kill explorer.exe OS handle it and not fell into BSOD.  My NTB is NOT compatible with WINDOWS 10.. I read about it on official Lenovo website. So it's very annoying unsolvetable problem. Basically, the Laptop will no longer detect the SSD (or HDD, doesn't make a difference) placed
in the caddy anymore. It never worked 100%, but for a long period of time it worked atleast most
of the time. Every 5th boot or so, it wouldn't get recognised - which is why I never put the OS
on the SSD, since it was to unreliable. Instead, I put my audio software, plugins and video caches
onto the SSD (I know, that's not really the point... But I feel like it made some difference).
For a few weeks now, no harddrive in the caddy whatsoever is recognised at all. Not in the Bios,
not in the device manager and not in Windows' harddrive manager. This was more of a gradual
thing, i got a bunch of blue screens durring the boot process (usually at the Windows 7 loading bar).
Occasionally, it will show up in the boot menu - but as soon as I actually boot, it will once again be undetectable.
The CD drive works just fine when I put it back in, so it can't be the SATA port.
I tried three different Caddys, so that can't be the problem either- unless the G510 need... Read more

What kind of hard drive and hard drive caddy would I need for a Lenovo Thinkpad 410? Where is a good place to get a caddy, and about how much do they cost? I was looking to buy a T410 on eBay, and I see a lot of them don't include a hard drive.      I don't know much about laptops in general.     I saw 2.5" laptop hard drives for sale on eBay and at newegg.    Will any of them work?

Answer:What Hard Drive and Caddy Fits Lenovo T410?

Any of those Lenovo T caddies on ebay will work.  I think the going rate shipped is $9 or less.  As for hdd, pick the capacity you need using Newegg, Amazon or TigerDirect.  Just make sure it's 9.5mm or less.  Occasionally a nice 1TB spinning at 7200rpm with 32 or 64mb cache goes on sale for <$70.  I think last week the HGST was $58

Answer:Lenovo Y700 adding hardrive caddy clips

I think these are Lenovo propriety parts. Contact Lenovo support, they may have some they can sell to you.

I recently purchased a HDD caddy for my Lenovo T410 from Lenovo. I installed a SSD in the primary HDD slot and I placed a 1 TB HDD into the drive caddy to be used as additional storage. I installed Windows 10 on the SSD and set the document store to be on the secondary drive. I can boot into Windows just fine but the issue is that the secondary drive shows up in Windows but when I try to access it explore.exe freezes. If I remove the secondary drive and restart my computer it works just fine. I cannot understand why this would happen considering it worked just fine at first. If anyone has any ideas as to why this is I would greatly appreciate it, considering I have already searched the forums of many different sites.

How to obtain the four screws that secure the caddy to the laptop body?
(Not the screws that keep the HDD inside the caddy.)
Does anyone know the specification for these screws, and where I can buy them?

I have Lenovo G510. I am using WD 1TB hard drive since 2 years.
I bought new SSD and replace HDD with SSD and then replace the DVD Drive with that 1TB Hard inside Universal Caddy.

Initially I was getting problem the drive doesn't show in Windows 10. I reseated the Caddy once again after that it started showing up.

Now it shows the secondary HDD but after start up it stops working like I get 100% active time, and 0 read and write.
There is flip in universal Caddy in which there are 3 states and I have set in the middle, but the problem is still
there HDD that I was using from years stops working inside caddy after 10 minutes startup every time in Windows 10
What can be the issue?

Answer:adding another hard disk on lenovo G50-45 need caddy configuration size

I would opt for using the old HDD as a USB external drive. Most "caddy" options do not work correctly in the Optical Drive Bay, there are quite a few threads that have extensive postings on problems with them.A USB hard drive external case is a cheaper option, one that will work with any USB enabled computer. This would allow for quick transport of files between computers and notebooks / tablets.Good luck.CB

Hello,

I appear to have a corrupt C Drive, the Lenovo test came back with storage device test failure. This makes sense to me, as I have had nothing but problems with this PC from day one, I had to re-install Windows 10 about 5 times...
It came with Windows 8 originally.
So I guess I need to get a new hard-drive. I remember doing something like this about 15 years ago, where it was just taking something out of a slot and putting something else in instead, but I guess times have changed! What do I need to do, and will this affect being able to install the operating system etc?
Many thanks for any help....

Answer:Lenovo H50: Options for replacing a failed hard drive (HDD, SSD, caddy, SSHD)

This maybe be an opportunity (as they say, to turn lemons into lemonade.)  Probably the one best thing you can do to add performance to your system (providing your storage requirements aren't extreme), is to replace your HDD with a SSD.

Cable connections are the same as your failed, existing HDD (SATA3 6.0Gb/s data and SATA power), and depending on the physical size of the HDD (probably 3.5" from the specs), you will need a 2.5" to 3.5" caddy.

Best SSDs: Q1 2017

Or, as a direct physical replacement, a 3.5" SSHD would be a good upgrade over a standard HDD (I'd avoid any 5400 rpm drives.)

Hi, I bought a Z51 (as a christmas present for my mother).I have replaced the DVD RW with a caddy (I don't know if I can post the link here). I have set up a new SSD instead of the HDD, and installed the HDD into the caddy. I have been consistently able to boot from the original HDD (in the caddy), but only after a restart. (each time: first try, does not boot, does not appear in the boot menu. Then restart, and it works fine.) Windows 10 is now installed on the SSD and can perfectly boot (without the need of restarting), but the HDD appears neither in Windows nor in the BIOS. In fact, I have been able to mount it only once, after I launched the BIOS from the windows recovery options. Then it was recognized both in the bios and in the disk partition manager of windows 10. But I am not able to reproduce this. As this behaviour is quite strange, I was wondering if: it is a BIOS issue, a driver issue, or a caddy issue... Could you please provide me some advice ?

Hello,I recently bought a 240GB SSD for my G580 and replaced my old HDD. Because I felt that I need more space, I bought a HDD Caddy and installed it in Optical Slot. The problem is sometimes the HDD is not recognized and when it's recognized after a while it starts to 'choke', the reading/write speed decreases and eventually freezes. Have an old XP Pro PC with a bad motherboard, and another perfectly good XP Home PC. I put the Pro HD in the Home chassis and (after a revalidation of the OS) it booted successfully. However I can't get to the internet.

So I put the old Home HD back in the Home chassis, booted successfully, and attached the XP Pro HD to the Home machine with a USB caddy, thinking I'd just have to copy the files to the Home PC.

It sort of recognizes the drive - by that I mean that although no drive ecer shows up on the Computer screen, it makes the bloop-bloop noise when I plug it it (and when I remove it), and if I go to the notification area I can click on the icon for 'safely remove hardware' and it displays as a mass storage device, but there is no drive letter.

Disk management displays nothing pertaining to the drive.

I've plugged the caddy into the USB port of another PC and have gotten the same non-results.

And I tested the caddy with another drive and it works fine.

So I'm baffled.... How can I put the Pro HD into the chassis of the XP Home and have it boot and display all my files, yet when I use the caddy it fails to assign a drive letter?

Answer:HDD recognition problem with USB caddy

Possibly the old drive is a bad drive... age and technology lapses make the suffer.

That's not an original item, and it doesn't sound like it's compatible. Sometimes it depends on hard drive you use, so if you have several - try them. Otherwise send it back and try alternatives.

I have a Packard bell PC running Microsoft Windows Vista home premium.
Installed is a drive bay for a removable disk caddy. Once and once only I put an NTFS drive into this caddy and booted the system and it worked - I was able to copy data from the drive.
Now every time I boot the machine with the drive in the caddy I see the "timeline" display (the 10cm row of colours) which I always see on startup but the screen goes blank and nothing happens.
Boot the PC without the drive and it starts up OK I get the same "timeline" followed by a blank screen, then approx five seconds later I see Vista starting.
I have checked the boot sequence etc in Bios and all seems OK .
The only thing I can find is inside Vista there is a mention of IRQ problems in the event log? ACPI device does not recognise device in PCI slot????
But as the Caddy is connected as a Seconday IDE device (behind the DVD drive) the IRQ about PCI slots might be a red herring?
Why should Vista freeze in the blank screen?
Also the primary Boot drive is SATA and the removable is secondary IDE (if that makes any Difference)

My old laptop died It crashed whilst I was editing some pics (I had just uploaded 800+ pics from my DSLR). It then got stuck in a 'safe mode' loop. It kept giving me the option of opening in safe mode, or open normally. Whatever option I used it would just take me to a blank black screen with a cursor - the only way of getting out of this screen was to power down.

My laptop was 4 years old so I wanted to get a new one anyway, but needed some way of recovering my files from the old hard disk. I was told a caddy would be the best option - so I bought a Dynamode USB caddy, put my old hard disk in it and plugged it into my new laptop - and nothing....

the new laptop hasn't even acknowledged that something has been plugged in, although ever time I plug it in a red light appears on my caddy.

My new laptop has windows 8, the old one was vista - not sure if this is relevant.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated - as I really want my pics of my old hard drive

Thanks for your help

Kannst Du mir weiterhelfen? Oder noch nen Tipp geben? Gruss Roby

Hello, I recently purchased a Lenovo G510 laptop. The operating system is Windows 8 Pro (x64). I have downloaded all the drivers for the corresponding operating system from the Lenovo Support site incl. Lenovo Energy Management Driver (available version: 8.0.2.4) and installed them. My problem is the following: Because I will use the laptop almost all the time on AC power, I do not want to shorten the battery lifespan. For this reason I checked the "Optimized Battery Health" mark in the Energy Management, which should keep the battery charged at 60% when connected on AC power. It really does it, but when I turn off the laptop, the battery starts to charge again. When I turned on and Windows is loaded, the battery is not charging. Here is an example: at the end of the working day the AC adaptor is plugged in, the battery is at 60% and it's not charging. But on the next day in the morning when I turn on the laptop and Windows is loaded, the battery is at 100% fully charged. Therefore I would like to ask and I really hope if there is any fix/solution/etc. for my problem, because as abovementioned I would not like to shorten the battery lifespan. Thank you in advance!

Answer:Problem with Lenovo Energy Management on Lenovo G510 - Win 8 Pro (x64)

Does anyone have any idea how to fix my problem?

Since you have to hunt around different Lenovo sites (and other sites) to find out about these softwares, I decided to make a post to get feedback from actual Yoga owners on how these programs interact, what they do, which ones are prerequisite, and which ones are unnecessary. Please don't take this as a blanket answer. This is just what I have found. It might be right - it might be wrong. I'm looking for others to post their experiences as well. Lenovo System Interface Foundation Driver - Necessary prerequisite (missing driver in device manager without it). It allows the Lenovo Utility and Lenovo Companion to work. Lenovo Yoga Mode Control - Necessary if you want to use your yoga to seemlessly change between all the different modes (laptop, tablet, tent, stand). This software is responsible for autorotating and putting Windows into tablet mode. Lenovo Utility - Recommended(?) This one I'm not too sure on. I remember that I was missing some function that I wanted but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe battery cycle count and health? Lenovo Companion - I don't have this one installed and don't think it's necessary but would like someone else to shed some light here.

Question: M58 HDD Caddy

Hi, I want to fit a second HDD to an M58p small form factor (or whatever these small ones are called!) in place of the optical drive. I assume that Lenovo do a bracket kit for this, but I can't seem to find any part numbers etc... Anyone out there shed any light on this? Many Thanks, Mike

Answer:M58 HDD Caddy

Fitting a HDD into an optical drive bay can be accomplished with an inexpensive 3.5"--> 5.25" conversion kit available anywhere (Like the one HERE). I think Lenovo has a bracket for that but it would be really expensive. The hole for the optical drive can only be covered up by a blank bezel, that's going to be the tough part to find, if it is an issue for you at all.

Thats it realy, I was wondering if it might be a good idea as I have a lot of home video to capture and edit . I thought I could use more than one hdd to capture onto and chop and change drives as required. It would also be handy as an off site store for the more important files. But can you use any HDD?Cheers Lixdexik.

Answer:Can any HDD be used as/with a caddy?

Put a HDD to an external enclosure or buy an external HDD.

I've got one lying around somewhere... the CD drive caddy... in which you add an SSD and replace your CD drive.

Dumb question: what can I do with this?
Can I have another copy of the Windows?
Can I have Linux and multiple boots?

Thanks

Answer:SSD in caddy - what can I do?

Sure.
Just wondering why not install the ssd as an internal drive without the caddy?

1st generation CD drives had a removable plastic holder which you inserted the CD's into.  Then you placed the entire cassette into the drive.  Is that what you have?Is this the drive?  http://www2.sunrem.com/sun02.w?pt=661-1705&catcode=10100Here's the caddy:  http://www2.sunrem.com/sun02.w?pt=678-5059&catcode=10100

Hi everyone, I recently purchased the Z50-70 laptop and so far I love it! I feel it could be a little bit faster with a solid state drive, however.  I have a 250GB 840 Evo I can throw in (with a caddy for the 1TB HDD that's already installed), but from what I've researched I can't have a 1TB HDD in the CD drive slot, but I'd rather not put the SSD there, because it wouldn't perform at full speed and would completely defeat the purpose of that drive.  I guess what I'm asking for is the maximum capacity the CD drive slot will allow for a HDD caddy? Thanks!Gage Henry

Hello,
I'm having problems with my WD blue 1TB HDD (which came originally with the laptop) being recognized using it in CD-ROM caddy.
I bought Dell Inspiron 17 5767 like a month ago, and of course I want to upgrade it with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB), and then use original HDD instead of CD-ROM.
I already read the post: en.community.dell.com/.../19536697
I have Salcar caddy, which is proven good, already in previous 2 laptops, one HP and one Dell. Also the current one with this HDD was tested in older Dell and the disk is recognized and works superb. So from this I can conclude, the caddy and the disk are completely fine, something must be wrong on my new Dell side.
I upgraded BIOS (to 1.09), SATA and other drivers yesterday ... nothing changes.
The OS (on the SSD) is original as got from Dell, as the data was migrated with the Samsung utility from original HDD to SSD. Then HDD was formatted, currently has only one partition.
In BIOS I disabled Virtual machine and LAN boot settings, as they are not needed. Also, LPM is disabled, as suggested in other post. But still no change.
The HDD in caddy is not recognized in BIOS, nor Windows, nor Disk Management, nor CMD (diskpart).
I also tried to create smaller partition, about 850 GB, still not recognized. I didn't try with smaller than 750 GB, maybe should do this, but I don't believe this is a problem.
I bet there are other users out there with the same problems - did anyone got this worki... Read more

Question: Caddy

I need to transfer contents of an IDE hard-drive to a Sata machine. I have been told I need a caddy!. I confess I have no idea what this is.Would someone be kind enough to explain what I need and how to get it to work?.Many thanks

Answer:Caddy

This is a IDE caddy that you put your Hard Drive into. click hereThe Jumper on your Drive as to be set to Master for it to work, you then just plug it into a USB port for it to load. Do not just pull it out when you have done as this can damage the drive. In lower Task Bard near clock you will see a Icon with a Green arrow right click on this to safely remove. If you have problems shutting it down, power your PC down then remove the plug before restarting PC

Question: 8.1 from hd caddy

Hello all,

So I find myself in an odd situation. I upgraded form xp to windows 8.1 on an old laptop I had. Since then, this laptops video card has started to go. So what I am looking to do is to take the hd from that pc, put it in a hardrive caddy, and boot from that on a different computer. For certain reasons I need to retain both OS's.

My question is this. How will Microsoft deal with the licensing in this situation. I attempted this and got a notification that I will need to reactivate windows, but does this count as a second pc in their eyes? Or can I make the call and just say that the hardware has changed.

another note, Ideally I would like to move between both computers without re licensing, but I'm assuming this might not be possible.
