I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After last patching tuesday, my Livemail has not worked in Windows Live Mail. I get this error: 0x80072EFD

I have googled it, and it shows up with errortrapping on Windows update!! But Windows update is working just fine, only I can't use my Microsoft email account in Microsofts Windows Live Mail. My Gmail is working fine in Windows Live Mail, so why not my livemail account?
Anybody got a hint to a solution?

Answer:Vista Windows Updates error 0x80072efd

Hi Grace. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support.

I took the liberty of moving your post from the other similar thread so you can be sure that all replies herein pertain to your system and no one else's.

The Windows Updates error 0x80072efd means that your system is not properly connecting with the Microsoft Updates site or that it cannot complete downloads as it needs to.

One cause can be your Internet connection, but more than likely it is related to your anti-virus program and the existence of a 3rd party (non-Microsoft) Firewall. What a/v product(s) do you have installed and are you using the Windows Firewall &/or any other one?

Is your system updated with Vista SP1?

Regards. . .

Whelp to start this off I've Upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7. I knew I was going to have issues with it considering it just came out but I think the issues I'm having are registry related errors due to Some issues i used to have with windows 7. So back about in I'd say March or April I'd had the Issue of malware getting into my registry and changing Chrome's, Firefox's and IE's Proxy setting to other values. Resulting in greyed out Boxes under internet settings and Under the connections tab Saying "Some settings are managed by your system adminsitrator" . I have gotten it resolved by deleting the values. But now its back again. Also you should know i did full scans with all of the following before posting here those include. Rougekiller, AdwCleaner, Hitman Pro, Avast, Emisoft Security Suite, and Malwarebytes. They Found the general PUP and Malware Which have been removed But there are Values that probably need deleted or changed and I need help finding them I've been browsing for an Answer on why the store was not working for a while until I realized what was going on. Note that Firefox works Fine but Internet explorer and anything Microsoft Related Cannot access the Internet that Includes the store windows update and logging into my Microsoft account.
Oh I've also Ran SFC /Scannow and CCleaner.

Any help would be appreciated

Store Quality team of Microsoft has posted a workaround for the “Server Stumbled” issue with the error code 0x80072EFD.
There were many reports of Windows 10 users facing this issue of “Server Stumbled” with error code 0x80072EFD . This error manifests in Network connectivity issues from the Client to the Store Services. A workaround is made available as listed below to tackle this:
Using an administrator account on the affected machine, open the registry editor and navigate to the following key

Windows Store does not/has never worked since upgrading to Windows 10. When opened it says "The server stumbled. We all have bad days. Refresh the page." Error code 0x80072efd at bottom of page. Refreshing page merely repeats the same message.

Scoured the web for fixes, can't find anything other than to purge Store cache (wsreset.exe), which does nothing for this problem.

IN addition, Microsoft Edge also does not work. Do not know if that is a related issue or separate.

Any help anyone could provide would be appreciated.

I recently had a pretty major virus fixed thanks to help from this website: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1677528 Following the fix, I have not been able to access the internet. My virus specialist has identified it as a DNS issue, but we have not progressed past that point in terms of fixing, so I was hoping to get some additional input from this forum. Here is what I can tell you about the issue:- when I try to go on IE or Firefox, I get the standard "cannot open this page" error- I am currently on a home wireless network, but the problem persists whether going through a wired or wireless connection. I have another computer on this wireless network (one I am typing from) that works fine on the wireless network and wired from the modem, so I think we can rule out the modem/router.- The broken computer has a valid IP address (192.168.1.x) and shows as having a strong connection (it's a small apartment). When I open up the status of the connection to look at the packets, generally the computer is receiving about 5% of the packets sent.- I have tried flushing the DNS.- I can ping the router, but I cannot ping google.com.- I can open up IE and reach google by typing http://216.239.59.147 in the address bar. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions you can offer. Let me know if you need any additional info. I'll try anything!

im am using windows xp pro with SP2the problem i have is associated with the error message xerces panic error (could not load a transcoding service)at first, i thought it was a software problem as i encountered it first when i was installing peachtree accounting (my system was still service pack 1 at that time). installation seems fine but when it gets to 100% and running final steps, the error appears. i just press ok and then the installation finishes ok.i then try to run the app but i again get the same error. at this point, i was thinking that it may be a conflict with one of my running processes so i disabled my anti virus.. still nothingthen i disabled my firewall, still nothingthen i restarted the computer in safe mode so that it will only load the essential drivers, i still get the same errorat this time, i was thinking it must be a software problemthen the next day, i tried to run my 3600 printer assistant (hp) and then i also get the same error. this got  me suspicious as i have been able to run this program without any problems before. i began to think that it was a windows problem not software.so i installed service pack 2 (and ran automatic update and  installed all updates) in the hope of fixing the problembut after all those things i did, i still get the same errori dont think its software related but rather something in my windows setting perhaps. i will really appreciate any help..tnx

Hi everyone. I am at a loss!

Dell system running Windows 98 with Word 2000. System also has Works Suite installed. The following error occurs when trying to access Word:

Winword caused an invalid page fault in module WINWORD.EXE 018f:303e4fbd

I also receive the following error code from Dr. Watson when it is running and I try to access Word:

Microsoft Word for Windows performed an invalid memory access, Module Name WINWORD.EXE, Description Microsoft Word for Windows, Version 9.0.2717.

I have renamed NORMAL.DOT to NORMAL.OLD

I have dumped the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/9.0/Word/Data

I have cleaned my TEMP folder

I have attempted to open Word in Safe Mode

I have uninstalled Word and reinstalled

All have been to no avail. I have exhausted my search to a resolution through Microsoftís website, TSG and Google. I have run all of Dreamboatís recommendations via http://www.theofficeexperts.com/word.htm.

When I click Start/Run and type in winword.exe /a< I can get Word to open, but that is the only way. I am growing very frustrated and would like to resolve this issue. I am not suspecting corrupt memory but am open to any suggestions.

Thanks a bunch.

I have a Dell XPS 420 desktop computer with Windows Vista 32 as its operating system. I began experiencing issues with my pixels scrambling and (ATI 2600) game card crashes after an automatic ATI/AMD update. I also have Kaspersky anti-virus software on my computer. The two had driver conflicts after the update. My game card eventually failed completely after numerous crashes and computer shut-downs. I was advised to run Combo-Fix (with detailed instructions) and during the process of Combo-Fix running, the computer crashed and came back up with a black screen with a white cursor. I cannot access my cd/dvd drive, internet, safe mode, etc. The only thing I can do is go through the F8 feature. Restore points are gone. Last good configuration does nothing. I need to uninstall the old drivers from my ATI/AMD graphics card and install a new GEForce game card, but I don't know how to do it through the command prompt. I downloaded DriveSweeper, DriverDetective, DriverFusion, but I received errors on all of them and they would not install. There are tax files and other files as well as passwords on the computer that I cannot afford to lose. I don't want to reinstall windows if at all possible. Any suggestions? I desperately need help as soon as possible. I am at a complete standstill until I can uninstall the old drivers and install the new ones.

For some reason my FTP just up and stopped resolving URL host names. I can punch an IP in no problem, but if i throw the domain in there... it cant resolve it. Same error for any FTP i try to connect to. This problem is also affecting my [email protected] packets... they aren't going out either.

WWW works fine, no problems with domain names.

Anyone have any clue what may be going on? They all worked the other day... /sigh

My Computer Illiteracy can get the better of me in the best of times, so that being said I sometimes wish I had a Computer Wizard standing by .... I've been dealing with Failed Updates and getting Error Codes 80071A91 & 80070643..I still have maybe 13 updates that microsoft says are critical but I'm somehow unable to download if thats the right word...

In my guarded rooting around if you will I managed to get some updates...When I'd shutdown the computer and get the Update Notice to Not turn the Power off and so on..That has stopped as it seemed to be in Repetitious Mode..

On Start Up I still get the Black & White message Checking File System C, Checking for Disk Consistency..I don't seem to be getting anywhere with Fix It..

Looking back and trying to analyze where the Fly in the Ointment could be I somehow wonder if something got clicked that shouldn't have been clicked...I have the Free Avast Anti Virus , Home Edition and my Son installed the Malware Bytes...There was a HiccUp between the 2 if you will and the Malware Bytes was Removed...It was around this time my Issues began...Thanks

Hello:
This is my first post - thank you in advance for any assistance including feedback of posting in wrong place or posting incorrect title, etc.
Once again I am getting an error message regarding a "MPU-401 Compatible MIDI device" -- error message: "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12) If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."

I cannot find how I solved this problem the first time it happened about a week ago. I have tried using updating drivers both using the recovery disc as well as not using the recovery disc. Tried rolling back to previous driver. Also tried uninstalling driver and reinstalling but still getting same message. === I have spent so much time troubleshooting that I forgot what I did just prior to the error, however it is possible it occurred after I uninstalled an application callled "dB PowerAMP Music Converter" or another "dB" application.

Thank you for any assisance whatsoever. -- Jerri

Hello, I've been having constant blue screen problems for months now. Admittedly I did little to help remedy it because I barely had any use for my computer. Lately however I've found that it's actually starting to worry me.

My knowledge regarding computers is limited, however I'd much rather try to get help online before going as far as taking it to a PC Repair shop. Anyway, regarding the problem: I've looked up a few random things regarding the few errors I was able to make out before it crashed. Typically the most frequent message is "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" however I've also gotten one that says something like "IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". To be honest I don't quite remember the exact wording of the latter.

At one point I tried finding the various STOP 0X codes however it seems to change each time. I tried going to administrative controls and checking out the information from my crash reports. Each one seems to have these files under "Files to describe this problem":

Mini100110-01.dmp
sysdata.xml
Version.txt

The Mini.DMP number varies but it seems that each shut down report I checked had only these files listed as the problems. Granted I haven't checked all of them yet (their are a lot, it can happen up to five or six times before I even access my desktop on a bad day) but that seems to be the one thing all the crash reports share.

I'll do whatever is necessary to try and ... Read more

Hello I have an ASUS G73Jh laptop purchased in March 2010 that has been having unexpected shutdown issues that appear similar to thermal shutdowns. Before sending the laptop back to ASUS for repair I decided to perform a factory restore of the original boot drive. The laptop came loaded down with lots of "junk" software that I wanted to remove so I uninstalled several programs using the usual windows 7 programs and features / uninstall a program control panel applet. By the time I was done, upon reboot, 4 or 5 errors immediately displayed all with a similar error dialogue that reads: "MOM.exe - Fatal Error CLR error: 80004005 The program will now terminate". Several executable files were listed in place of MOM.exe. It was suggested that I remove my ATI CCC and run DriveSweeper after reboot but even DriveSweeper ended with the CLR error. I ran Hijack This and posted my results here. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

When I go to Windows Updates and click for the express scan for updates I get an error message.  The number of the error message is 0x80248011.  I have tried a couple of the solutions that Microsoft recommends on its Update site, but have not been successful in completing them.  For one it asks me to rename a file, but it won't let me change the name.  I have used the Protection Scan/Disc Cleanup Scan on the Microsoft site and they report there are no virus problems, and I have used my Norton scan with the same results.I have also been having a problem with shutting down my computer and have to do it by turning the power off, so I have not been receiving automatic updates.  How can I solve this problem? Thanks for remembering that I am not very computer literate, so please use the most simplistic explanation as to how to remedy this situation.  Could the problem I have getting updates be connected to the shutdown problem?I appreciate any help you can give me on these problems.  Thank you.

Tried the following:
1. Update works if I bypass the router, ie. connect the PC directly to modem.
2. It also works from different ISP, through router (at work).

Hi,

Try to remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration for Windows 7:

1.
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start programs and files box.
2.
Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
3.
Type the following command and then press Enter:
netsh winhttp show proxy
Note The proxy setting is listed next to Proxy Server. If there is no proxy server, Direct Access <no proxy server> is shown in the Command Prompt window.
4.
To remove the listed proxy setting, type the following command and then press Enter:

netsh winhttp reset proxy
5.
Click Start, click All Programs, click Windows Update, and then try to download and install updates again.Alex Zhaozx

Greetings everyone.
Last Tuesday when I turned my computer on, I got the message ďA disk read error occurred, press crtrl+alt+delete to restartĒ. Since then I have been searching online for a way to get my computer back up & running.
The specs of my computer:

Dell Inspiron 9100 Notebook
Windows XP Pro SP3
P4 @ 3.2 Ghz w/ Hyper Threading
1 gb Memory
160 gb Western Digital PATA/IDE HD
(Replaced original 80 gb HD in May 08 b/c too small)
Removable internal DVD/CD-RW drive (& a removable internal floppy disk)
Purchased in Oct. 04.

When I installed the new HD back in May, I used Apricorn EZ Gig II & the included HD enclosure to copy the contents of the old HD onto the new one.

I first ran the onboard Dell diagnostics; it did a full system scan (from the processor to the memory to the HD) it told me everything was fine.
I then ran the WD hard drive utility from a floppy disk. I ran both the quick & full tests and it told me there were no problems.

Since the HD seems to be alright, Iíve been wondering if something has corrupted the Master Boot Record. I do my best to keep my system in check; security-wise I run Norton 360 2.0 & Ad-Aware 2008 (thereís more I can do though, I know). I donít think it could be malware, but who knows.

Anyways, Iíve tried booting from my Windows CD to get to the Recovery Console or do a repair installation, but things hit a snag. The drive spins up & I get a message telling me setup is preparing files, but then the scr... Read more

Question: Resolving

Hi everybody, I have a question concerning resolving.

It may be clear to everybody that a browser, upon recieving an url, does a query to the designated resolver. The resolver returns an IP to the query. The reason the resolver can do so is because it looks up the url in a zonefile (the a-record in this example). This zonefile periodically refreshes itself because the SOA record contains a ttl. So far, so good.

I am looking for a little bit of information, however. My problem is the question of how a resolver obtains a zonefile the first time. I think that a resolver does a query to the holder of the toplevel domain involved in the query. If the url would be [edit]\\http://www.techist.com\\[/edit] for instance a query would have to be done to the holder of the top level domain '.net'. I think this is done by a query to the regional internet registries via the '.', which I think is maintained by ICANN (and nowadays YOUCANN). The holder of the top level domain would have to redirect the queries to the authorative nameservers by means of pointer records. I think this is why all autonomous systems necessarily maintain a list of pointer records.

So, to be specific, my questions are:
1) Is it true that ICANN (and nowadays YOUCANN) maintains a form of pointer records for the regional internet registries?
2) Is it true that the regional internet registries point to autonomous systems based on IP, or are the regional internet registries bypassed and are the top level doma... Read more

Okay so I'm at work and my bosses assistant gets an emaill that our filter picked up a user trying to access adult material on the web. So she forwards me the email and all it has is the IP address. So I need to find the name....

I first run nslookup on the IP which doesn't return anything, then I figured it might not be registered with that DHCP server so I run it so it query's the other server. Still nothing. So then I check in Altiris to see if it has the A client or if I can add the A client to it. Neither work. So then I remote to the first DHCP server and look through the leases. Not on the first one but I found the IP on the second one. However there is no name... which makes sense because I couldn't look it up with nslookup. I have the MAC address now and I deleted the lease on the that machine so they shouldn't be able to browse without a restast.

My question is can I obtain a name of the machine with it's MAC address?

Of if anyone else has something else (helpful) to add.

Answer:Resolving a name from a MAC

That would be contained in the ARP table. If the box is a Windows system you can also try using pstools' psexec and do an ipconfig (assuming you have a domain account which would have access to the system) and get the info from that.

Try doing an Arp -a on the DHCP server (if it is Windows) and search for the IP and MAC in there.

Question: Not resolving DNS

Hi,

System : XP Pro SP3

Problem : Not resolving dns. nslookup returns the dns server's ip address but can't resolve server name or anythhing else.

ipconfig /all returns all correct settings sent by the dhcp on the router. Can ping ip addresses and dns server's ip addresses but does not resolve anything. Other computers on the network works fine with the same configuration.

Did ipconfig/flushdns, manually restarted dns service, Reinstalled network card driver, changed network card, changed network cable, tried giving fixed ip config, same issue. Uninstalled SP3, even symantec, reinstalled them, same problem. There are no other network adapter on the system, cleared everything in network even in safe mode.

But when I go on the network connexion Properties - Uncheck tcpip, uninstall microsoft network client and remove network card in device manager. Reboot the computer, reinstalls the client and protocol, everything works normally, until next reboot. Reboot the computer, problem is back.

Have to repeat this procedure to get things back to work.

I'm about to wipe the system and reinstall it but would definitely prefer a solution before going through that process.. What could be that %$"! problem ??? Any idea ?

Thx,

Manu

Have you tried without the norton security ? I used to work on an IT helpdesk and it could cause this sort of problem even after an uninstall/reinstall. Try using the norton removal tool to make sure that its gone. http://service1.symantec.com/Support...05033108162039

Hello

the DNS server is not resolving any URL requests. the ip of the dns server is 10.0.10.5 and all computers are pointed to this Ip as DNS.

Also DNS server is configured with a relay DNS IP(global IP).
I think when a client requests for a URL, it is getting reply from the relay IP, and not from the DNS server itself. so to resolve it takes much time.

local computer name resolution also not working...
for example is i type //computername it isnt opening up, where as //ip address works...

i checked dns server it is up and runnig...what more to check and fix it..
pls help

Been having this trouble for a while now. When using mozilla, i'll start getting "cannot resolve url", and no url will resolve after this message appears. Restarting mozilla does not help. Rebooting does, though. I also discovered that i can also open a command line and do an "ipconfig /release" and then an "ipconfig /renew" and that fixes it as well.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be causing this? I haven't seen any obvious indications of viral or worm infections. The last scans i did did not turn up any malware, so i really am at a loss.

I'll be doing more looking around as i find time.

Answer:URL's not resolving

Try flushing the dns:

ipconfig /flushdns

Hope that helps

I have a new Dell Inspiron 17 (7746). From day 1, running Windows 8.1, I started having the "resolving host" problem with Chrome and Firefox. I am now using Windows 10, and having the same problem. I have been hesitant to try various web recommendations that apply to older windows versions, but this is driving me nuts.

Answer:Resolving Host

The technical reason for this issue is that the DNS servers configured by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) takes long time to find a mapping IP address for the host name you entered like http://www.example.com.Click to expand...

Question: Resolving host

Hi,
I have a new XPS 8920 and whenever I use Google Chrome I regularly get web pages failing to load. The status message says Resolving Host. After mins or so, the internet works ok again.  Viewing and using the internet on my iPad or Android phone are both fine with no issues. All machines are connected on the same wifi network.
Any ideas as to what is causing the issue on my Dell machine?
Thanks
Michael

Answer:Resolving host

You may have a malware that is trying to hijack where you go.
Can you use another browser and successfully go where you want?   IE or Firefox??
You might also try statically setting your DNS setting to OpenDNS (or whoever else you trust) to force it to use a reliable source.   Or also uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome to see if that makes a difference.

Hello Bleeping Community,

I've recently come to terms with the fact that I've been infected with a Virus of some sort, I'm guessing its backdoor trojan or something along those lines. Just today I noticed a number of new firewall rules that I did not create. I've also been experiencing some very odd network traffic, as if something is trying to phone home for further operations. I've set my Avast firewall to "Ask" before allowing anything through, after doing so I noticed several unsigned windows operations trying to get through. I let one slip through to see what the deal was & it immediately unpacked itself in C:\12d5cabo5ac0224a.....\setup.exe, I chased it down to try and sandbox the operation but every time I did it would hop from one directory to next before you know it, Poof its gone. I've done a few clean installs, tried my hand at hardening the OS, flashed my bios, reset my wifi & the problems still persist. I'm throwing in the towel, I've done everything in my power, Hopefully you all could help me out

Answer:Help resolving possible BackDTrojan(or)Mal

Hello Ghostpepper. If you do have a backdoor infection, please consider this. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Thank you for taking your time to visit my post and for any help you may provide. Apparently, I got a bad file a few weeks ago with some sort of trojan or something. I think it was vundo something. Any ways , thought I deleted it but I guess not. It was attatched to explorer.exe and crashed every time I tried to delete it, well I finally got it deleted and thought it was gone. There is this folder that I have to unlock and delete on every reboot and there is also some strange stuff in the HJT log that I'm not sure what to do about it. Thank you for your time again. By the way, I followed the 5 steps as well as I could, it would not allow an online scan, some sort of error. Hope I have complied. Here you go.

Answer:Need Help Resolving an Issue

I am reposting per instructions to bump after 72 hours. Since I am posting now, I will go ahead and include my DSS log of main.txt. The Deckards System Scanner did not supply me with an extra.txt file and I tried scanning 3 different times. I know this is the virtumundo virus. Maybe a few more now. i successfully deleted some .dll files a few weeks ago pertaining to this but it won't go away. Yes I was stupid and tried to download an illegal copy of microsoft frontpage. I won't do that again =(. I deleted the folder that contained the bin folder with UnLocker. It keeps coming back every reboot though. I messed the instructions up and I'm sorry. Please don't keep that from helping me resolve this issue. I wish I could change the thread title b/c I see you all don't like that. But it's to late now. Not sure as to why the DSS wouldn't give me the extra.txt. Maybe some of you can figure it out. Thank you again.

Here are the results of the Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) Main.txt
Again, it supplied me with no extra.txt even after scanning three times.

Hi, I need help please. I use the latest version of FF. Have had no problem till today when I went to abcnews.com website. The site loaded and I went to check and see what was on 20/20 tonight. Then suddenly FF crashed. I got the usual popup telling me to either restart/quit FF and send a crash report. I clicked restart and the abc page tried loading again but after a couple of minutes FF crashed again. I clicked on restart new session and went back to FF google homepage. All seemed fine till I went to caringbridge.com and FF crashed again. I restarted a new session and tried other sites I visit daily. And they all crashed. Including gmail. I then did what trouble shooting that I know to do. I opened FF again and disabled all add-ons. Still crashed. I switch to safe mode in FF. Still crashed. Fearing that I picked up a bug I scanned by PC with my paid version of malwarebyte's. The scan came up clean. To be sure I re-started PC and went to safe mode and scanned again. Still scan was clean. I then scanned with my Avast anti-virus. That came up clean. Internet explorer works. But since I dislike it I immediately DL Google's Chrome which I am currently using. I've googled for help with FF, but can't find anything helpful or rather that I can understand. If anyone has any clues on how to restore FF back to working order I would be most appreciative. This is weird: I set up a VPN connection to a remote server (the PC is a Win2K SP4, behind a Linux firewall). At first it connected Ok, but after disconnect, the machine cannot resolve any FQDN ("ping www.yahoo.com" returns unknown host) I've checked ALL the network config, digged into the registry, my internal DNS servers are working (all the LAN is using them), but no luck. I ran a sniffer against this machine, and when trying pinging, it tries to resolve names through port 137 (?!) Something else: I cannot establish any kind of connection (no ftp, telnet, ssh) BUT I can see the whole network neighborhood, and even access shared files. Itīs driving me nuts... any help is extremely appreciated.

Answer:NO DNS resolving after VPN connectio

I believe that I read where the server that you connect through in the VPN needs to be set to route your DNS and WINS requests.

In re-reading your post, is the problem when you are connected through the VPN or does the problem occur after the VPN session is terminated? If it occurs after the disconnect, does a reboot resolve the problem until the next VPN session?

This has been bugging me for days now, so like a typical man I'm going to reluctantly ask for directions. I have a Dell Dimension Desktop pc that is driving me slowly mad.

When the PC starts up it connects to the network and all seems fine. Open up IE and try to go to www.google.co.uk or any other website and it comes back with cannot display the webpage and occationally DNS not found. So I have tried using the IP addresses to connect. Same issue. So, into cmd prompt and ping google.co.uk reply 209.85.229.104 ok.. so ipconfig /all reports back correct ips for dhcp dns and default gatewaymac address is NOT FF:FF:FF etc

Tried Netsh winsock and ip int resets reboot no change tried WinxpWinsock reset application, same result. tries Safari and firefox same results.

HOWEVER, if I then pull out the Ethernet cable and plug it in (even just briefly) normal service is resumed... Until the next reboot. I have tried more things on this machine than I care to mention but here is a quick list:
Combofix (from safemode with /killall switch)
Malwarebytes
Superanti spyware
various Winsock and IP interface resets
reset windows fire wall
reset of IE from internet options (although all browsers are showing same result anyway)

So... Which tiny thread of a forum have I missed?

Please help, I really hate doing Format and Reinstalls... It makes me feel like a PC World Tech.

Question: Resolving Host

Hi y'all
I'm not so much of a techie, so please bear with my lay man language.
In short, a lot of websites are just NOT loading on ANY of my browsers. Chrome is my default browser, but I've tried connecting to these websites through Firefox and Explorer too, to no avail.
I keep getting the 'Resolving Host' message and the webpage cannot be found. With some sites, I could view the cached copies. I tried pinging too, with the same response, it takes a while n then comes up with the reply: ping request could not find host so and so.
And all this with VERY commonly used websites like facebook, yahoo and hotmail.
Some websites load easily and fast like youtube, but the other 50% don't. This site itself is not loading properly- mostly the icons, and it connects quite slowly too.
I've tried everything- clearing cache and cookies, turning my firewall off, disabling DNS prefetching and yes, I installed Malware Bytes (could not access that site either, had to DL through my phone), it detected a few fishy files n we quarantined and deleted them into nothingness.
The funny thing is, a few sites do open up but most don't, and this behavior is exhibited mutually by all browsers.
Please help me, as there are important websites I need to access crucial to business that won't open.
I'm from India, my internet speed is 100 mbps.

Make sure you're not using proxy servers:

In Internet Explorer:

Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan settings > Under Proxy server, uncheck the "Use a proxy server for your LAN......." box and click OK.

In Firefox:

Click Tools > Options... > Advanced > Network > Settings > select No proxy > click OK.

In Google Chrome:

Answer:Help resolving errors on CBS log please

So I have been dealing with the same problems with sfc /scannow and getting the cbs.log error message. Microsoft fixed it so I could download SP1 but it still gave me error messages with certain programs. My frustration was with Quickbooks which never opened up and then I figured out the problem. I wasnt able to open up adobe pdfs without an error messages that said I needed to open another adobe application which was strange and never happened before.
So what I did was delete some of the latest downloads from Adobe within the last few weeks and PRESTO quickbooks opened. I didnt have to roll back anything in Vista since it wasnt the problem it was an ADOBE DOWNLOAD. As I recalled quickbooks uses some sort of adobe flash in the beginning of the program and I would assume that other problems would be fixed by this .

Hi i'm having a strange issue with one of my users.

We run a logon script to map network drives to a users machine during logon using the following schemea \\hostname\share$

However for this one particular user onehostname cannot be resolved.
All shares on another hostname are mapped successfully.
And when mapping via IP ALL shares are mapped successfully.

I'm successesfully able to Ping the hostname and I've tried flushing the DNS cache and restarting the machine but the problem persists.

No other users or machines are reporting the issue.

If you can offer any help or advice I'd be greatful

For apparently no reason at all my DNS isn't resolving the IP addresses. If I ping Yahoo's IP directly (a friend told me it was 4.2.2.2), I get a response. But if I ping www.yahoo.com, it doesn't work. Please help me to rectify this.

Cheers,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum spot for this, but thought someone else should see this.... I have two NICs setup on a "bridge" pc to bridge two domains together, a Dev domain and a Prod domain.  Both nics have a single DNS server
pointing to 8.8.8.8 for googles DNS (no internal DNS),  BUT some how, a ping command to an internal server, resolves to a Dev or a Prod IP automagically... Any idea how these are resolving without local DNS servers configured on the NICs?

Here's my problem, I have a windows server 2003 enterprise installation on my file server in the basement. Hereís how my network is laid out:
Cable Modem-->Router-->Switch-->Server
Now this server isn't in a domain and it's only operating in a peer-to-peer network. For some reason it can't resolve any DNS names. I tried multiple Web sites to no avail. I can ping the ip address of the site but not the name. The server has the correct DHCP information (ip address, subnet mask, default gateway) It also has the correct ip address for the DNS server ( my router). All the other computers on the network are fine, they can resolve any site, so I know itís something wrong with the server. I also tried inputting the ip address of my ISPís DNS server, first as a secondary DNS server then finally as the only DNS server, but itís still not resolving any sites. I tried pinging the DNS serverís ipís successfully. I already flushed the DNS, and that didnít help.
I also tried connecting the server directly to the router, bypassing the switch altogether and that also didn't work.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Question: Resolving Host

Hi All,

My PC is randomly unable to resolve host names in IE or Chrome This issue occurs about every 20-30 minutes at which time I am unable to get to any website and all network access on the PC stops. I have scoured the forums of many sites and tried all the usual tricks (flush DNS, static DNS servers, static IP address and DHCP IP, and even a different 2 different routers with different firmware (stock and tomato). Here are few things I have discovered. If, when the issue occurs, I pull my network cable and re-attach it, the issue is resolved until next time. Same with disabling and re-enabling the NIC as well as a release / renew on WAN side of router After dealing with this for about a 3 days, I wiped and reinstalled Windows and the problem was resolved for about 3 weeks. Now it is back again. I am at my wits end and really don't want to reinstall Windows again. Any help is greatly appreciated.

BTW, this problem never showed up until I upgraded CPU and MOBO.

Win7 Pro 64bit
Gigabyte GA-z97x-sli MOBO
I5 4690k CPU

Answer:Resolving Host

Definitely sounds like a DNS issue...

Have you tried pinging the IP addresses of the sites you are trying to get to. This will help narrow down the issue. Also, I am assuming this does not happen on any other computer on the network? When you configured the a static DNS server, what IP address did you give it? Meaning did you use googles DNS servers or your ISPs DNS servers or some other DNS server?

I have a wireless connection. According to the Wireless Network Connection, my connection is at Very Good or better, but I can't access any websites. When I connect, I see a lot of bits are sent, but none are recieved. If ping yahoo from the cmd prompt, it's saying I'm losing a lot of packets. (I don't really know what that means.)

I've was able to connect to a unsecure wireless connection that my modem picks up and I'm able to connect to the internet just fine from there...but I obviously don't want to connect to someone elses unsecure internet connection.

Please help!

Thank you,
Bill

Came across a weird issue yesterday.
I work for the state, so of course we have a Windows AD domain setup.
Windows servers also doing DNS.

On 1 computer, and only on the regular user's profile, all domain's were resolving to a 0.0.0.x IP address. Google.com resolved to 0.0.0.10, state.ak.us resolved to 0.0.0.3.
Oddly enough, I could still access servers within the LAN.

It was not a DNS issue, as the local computer's DNS cache had the correct IP address for the domain names, even after the DNS cache was flushed, and nslookup resolved to the correct IPs also. Yet the computer was not using the IP the domain name actually resolved to. Connecting to the Exchange server was also finnicky; would take 3 tries or so, because it kept timing out (all within the same network).

Now, this only happend on the user's profile. I logged in with my AD profile, and everything worked. I logged in as the local admin, and everything worked.

We rebuilt the user's profile, and it started working again.

There were no abnormal running processes. Nothing abnormal installed on the PC. No abnormal services, or anything.

What could cause something like this? That it would only affect a particular user's profile?

Question: BSOD resolving

Hi guys. i have been getting information from this forum for some time now, its been extremely helpful so thank you all out there.

however, i am unable to find the answer to my problem.

I've have a sony vaio laptop and its running on windows xp service pack 1. It continuously comes up with the blue screen of death. This is linked to network. I know this because the BSOD never comes up when i have the wireless switched off but comes up when i turn wireless on. It sometimes does it instantly on switching wireless on or takes up to 10mins.

So the question is how put a stop to this? This is the exact error code.

STOP: 0x0000000A (0x017f0304, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8052746c)

I would class myself as a ammatuer when it comes to computers so please may you explain in a little detail.

Thank you so much and any help is appreciated.

Hello:

A friend asked me to look at his computer. Started out with a lot of redirects with IE or Chrome. He tried a sytem restore (which failed) and now has no DNS resolution. Won't ping anything by URL but will by IP address. Machine has no useable internet access...

Ran: 'Fixing Google Redirection/hijacking and other redirection problems'

Then: 'Windows XP Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure'

Some items were 'cleaned' by the various tools but machine's behavior is unchanged.

Thanks in advance for looking the logs over.

Hi, I put this in the OS section before, but I think it's maybe more appropriate here? -

Hi,

I've got a weird problem! My (WinXPProSP2) PC will not resolve any DNS names in a browser - I've tried IE and FireFox. BUT it will resolve from a command prompt!
Also no other applications are able to resolve: eg cannot update anti virus or any other software update, cant connect to MSN messenger, etc.
The even weird-er thing is that I CAN resolve fine within a virtual machine! That's what I'm using now, a SuSe virtual machine on an XP Pro SP2 host.

Well, just wondering if anyone had come across a similar problem?!

I think this only happened after I removed Panda anti virus and tried to install Kapersky - but the installer I had didn't work so I put McAfee 8 (Corp from work) on. I can't see how that would have this effect though.

I've had a look at my hosts file, it only has one entry: 127.0.0.1 localhost.
I also have a 'hosts.msn' file too - but that has the same single entry.

I've also recently removed a VPN client. NetScreen Secure remote. The only reason I mention that is that I had to add a DNS suffix for the domain I was connecting to, but I have set everything back to how it was/should be!

If you need anymore info just ask

Any help'll be hugely appreciated!

I can only get to an Internet site by putting in the ip address of the site. In a command window, I can not ping www.google.com, but I can ping the IP address. Everything looks right in ipconfig /all. I have my laptop plugged into the same router, and no problems. The ipconfig /all on both machines matches perfectly. Oh...and it's not the router or the cable. It was brought to me to repair with the "can't get on the Internet" complaint. Oh...and as a bonus, the CD-ROM does not work so I can't use any disks in my troubleshooting.

Hello readers of my 1st post.

I have a problem and i just can't figure out what the problem is.

I have several systems with windows XP Pro sp2.0 preinstalled on HP systems that all have the same weird problem.

I use this tool tcpipdriver that connects with a channel on a VMS machine which uses the alias from the hosts file.

I use the hosts file which is filled the way microsoft sais to do.
But on some IP addresses i have 2 aliases.
for example :

100.3.14.33 EKDXE1 ekdxe1
100.3.14.34 EKDXF1 ekdxf1 MYSYS mysys
100.3.14.35 EKDXH1 ekdxh1

After a couple of days (7-14 days) i noticed the tool gives an invalid argument.
I found out it couldn't reach MYSYS anymore.
So i started CMD and started a ping session to MYSYS and it returned "ping request could not find MYSYS."
When i ping on the same machine to the IP address of MYSYS i can reach it normally.
When i ping on the same machine to the 1st Alias EKDXF1 and i also can reach the system normally.

After a system restart it can work normally or stay the same with a no return on the 2nd alias.

Does any1 know this problem?
Does any1 know if XP can make use of 2 aliases per IP address in hosts?

Ayways, thanx for reading and i hope some1 knows a fix/workaround for this.

-Aphixtwin-

Answer:hosts resolving problem

What if you rearrange the hosts file like this:

100.3.14.33 EKDXE1 ekdxe1
100.3.14.34 EKDXF1 ekdxf1
100.3.14.34 MYSYS mysys
100.3.14.35 EKDXH1 ekdxh1

Or alternatively:

100.3.14.33 EKDXE1
100.3.14.33 ekdxe1
100.3.14.34 EKDXF1
100.3.14.34 ekdxf1
100.3.14.34 MYSYS
100.3.14.34 mysys
100.3.14.35 EKDXH1
100.3.14.35 ekdxh1

Hey guys,

I'm just here to make sure I'm doing everything right. I read up on some other people having ACPI issues with their computers, and I ended up with some the on 8/26. At first, it was just crashes, but it got to the point to where I had nothing but ACPI compliance BSODs. I read on here that some guy reinstalled from XP to Win 7 x64 and had no problems, so I'm doing that now in hopes of the same resolve. I've also read where a guy had issues with his M-Audio drivers and that it was causing all the issues.

Going back to my thoughts, the last drivers I installed were drivers directly from MSI for my Big Bang x58 motherboard. It also installed the Utilities they have with it, which may need to be considered.

Is there anything else I should consider doing while I install? I already updated the BIOS, so that's out of the way. I checked my memory already, so they are good to go. Anything I missed?

Answer:Resolving ACPI Issues

Great. While installing XP, I got a Memory_Management Bsod. I'm guessing I need to run memcheck?

Hey everyone,
I know no one (unless you have gone to college for computer security) is an expert with security. That doesnt mean that other people dont know a lot about security. I am going to be starting a group of security people. We are not trying to have anyone be above anyone else or try to talk down to less computer educated people. We just want everyone to get the MAXIMUM PROTECTION HELP they can. We will be discussing the latest and best software, the highest risk threats out there, some of the best ways to protect yourself, and how to do a few things to your computer to help protect yourself. I will be making a list at the top of this post on who is offically in the Infection Resolving Team (sounds very korny and childish but it is true so...) so everyone can ask us questions. If you have a little problem, you can just post in the System Security Forum as a normal post. If it is urgent of you have a serious problem you can either send anyone of the approved members a private message or post a comment in the blog here. Again, our only purpose is to help everyone reach there maximum protection against all of the "non-friendly" computer people out there.

If you are interested in joining you can send me, Neverhavemoney, a message or post your request in this thread.
Remember, A good computer starts with Good protection!!

Thanks very much
Ben

Answer:Infection Resolving Team

Hi Ben, I have put my name down for your group, if you'll have me. Thanks for this. Virus infection is a HUGE problem for everybody and you are so right, there are no experts (except I guess the folk that write these things). Any thing you want me to do, ask here or PM me. I think I am pretty security conscious, but I just got the Antivirus bug myself. A big wake-up call.

Hey guys! I'm trying to fix someone's computer and I'm stumped. The computer(s) apparently cannot connect to the internet. Right now, I am getting an IP straight from the ISP through the cable modem. Turned off the windows firewall. There are still some remnants of Norton Internet Security 2006 IIRC. (looking at the task manager, pretty sure it is not running right now.) Tried plugging the CAT5 cable into one of his laptops, same thing happens. I have tried resetting winsock, and have even downloaded the winsock fix, but it doesn't help. I have tried pinging google, yahoo, and other various IP addresses the people have posted and it has worked. So DNS seems to be working. I have yet to try accessing the internet with one of my computers from here. ISP is Comcast, Minnesota. I'll post any other info you need. Thanks!

I have a Netgear wnr3500 for my home network. I have certain sites blocked from inside it, for instance

facebook.com
fbcdn.net
google.analytics

They all get immediately blocked by a Netgear page. Good
HOWEVER, this stupid page
https://www.facebook.com/stonyfieldfarm?sk=app_195553383820910
gets through.

I keyworded https://www.facebook and it still gets through.

I even blocked it by exact url. Still gets through.

I then blocked yahoo.com and it was immediately Netgear blocked.

It seems this site is fooling my router. Does anyone know why or how it is doing this?

Answer:Router resolving issues

Noscript tells me that the facebook page is also trying to load a script from "commonsensedoubleup.com". Try adding that domain to the filterlist? It should still block the page from loading though.

You could add those sites to the HOSTS file on each computer. A pain in the butt, but it does work for blocking sites from loading.
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Add entries like:

Code:

127.0.0.1 facebook.com
127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 fbcdn.net
127.0.0.1 www.fbcdn.net

You could also try using OpenDNS as your DNS servers. If you sign up for a free account, I'm pretty sure you can set up block lists there as well.

I've looked all over the forum and have not found a topic like this one.
My issue seems to involve my entire home network. I have had two computers with browser hijack infections. One I relolved the other I could not. Also I have 4 websites that I own. All of them are with the same webhost, IX Web hosting.
www.thedavidtree.com 71.18.217.207
www.bfdavid.com (redirects to thedavidtree.com) 71.18.217.208
www.blujayway.com 71.18.217.95
www.bigbubbascookoff.com 71.18.178.49
the sites have dedicated IP addresses and will not resolve either way.
I can go to all of the sites on any other network with the same laptop.
I can ping thedavidtree.com with no problems.

Oh...When I go into Norton 360 and disable Intrusion Prevention the problem goes away. Isnt that interesting.

So here is my Psuedo HJT Report and you will find the Attach report attached.
Thanks in advance for your time and effort.

Answer:Some sites not resolving only from my network

Hi,Also I have 4 websites that I own. All of them are with the same webhost, IX Web hosting. And I just highlighted your main problem. IX Web Hosting.. I've blogged about this recently: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2009/01/ix-...g-reliable.htmlIt actually doesn't suprise me - because I just checked and your sites are infected with the Exploit: WebAttacker. Malicious code is inserted. You can check your sites here as well: http://linkscanner.explabs.com/linkscanner/default.aspxNo wonder your Norton blocks it.So as long as you visit your own infected sites, you'll get infected with a searchengine Hijack.Problem is, even though if you clean up your websites, they will get reinfected again since the problem is not at your end, but IX Webhostings end. What I suggest is, please take your websites offline immediately (before more people are getting infected while visiting your site) and - sorry to say - find a new webhosting company. It's the only solution, because even though you remove the malicious code from your sites and you reupload it again to IX Webhosting, they'll get infected again in no time. The log from the computer you posted... Is it having problems? Searchengine Hijack like this? http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/10/fak...archengine.htmlIf so, then we can clean it, but - as I explained, as long as you visit / open your own infected websites again, you'll get reinfected.Extra note, please uninstall the Ask Toolbar.

Hi,

I'm having a problem with DNS resolution here.
We have 2 domains; domain1 and domain2.

When in domain1 i can ping and resolve all devices within the same domain, vise versa with domain2.

However, from domain1 i need to use the FQDN to ping anything on domain2, and vise versa.

I've got DNS forwards setup in DNS to forward requests to the DNS server on each domain, but that doesn't seem to work.

Can anyone suggest?

Thanks!
Christian

I need help inserting a permanent DNS address in the networking section. I keep getting "resolving host" errors and "bad configuration" after a DNS probe. Can someone walk me through it? I tried using 8-8-8-8 and then 8-8-4-4 but perhaps i put it in the wrong areas.

I have 3 W10 issues I can't fix.
(1) Windows start up sound works 1 out of 6 PC start ups.
(2) Screen saver reverts back to 1 minute at each PC start-up & won't work unless I reset it past 1 minute.
(3) How do I get the Start screen to show instead of the desktop at PC start-up?

I have 2 desktop machines & 1 laptop & all 3 have the same above issues.

Answer:3 W10 Issues require resolving

I know your second ??? screen saver it will get better as you keep resetting it because I was having the same issues with it and now it seem to be working good

First off, they are totally separate problems. I run a dual boot, and I have to different issues, one on each boot.

On Vista, I have no sound in the browser. I get sound from everything else, other browsers too. It is just Firefox that has no sound on Vista. I may have just clicked something accidentally, but I need help resolving it.

On XP, I can't load anything. Pictures, anything requiring flash/java, nothing really loads. It's to the point that I can't use the browser at all. I go to google and I can't see the google picture. I go to youtube and it's totally messed up. I come here and I can't see any of the formatting of the forum. I've tried reinstalling firefox, flash and java and none have made a difference.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Folks,

I have an issue with my computer randomly restarting and I need help finding the root cause.

So far I have replaced the power supply, motherboard and the hard drive.

I have scanned the memory using memtest86, passed.

I do not sense any overheating of components on the motherboard or video card.

I suspect the culprit is the video card but I am not convinced as swapping with an older video card produces similar restarts. However, it should be noted that the older video card does not work well in general (fuzzy lines). Uninstalling video card drivers also does not help - still restarts randomly.

Motherboard BIOS is up-to-date and latest chipset drivers are installed.

Automatic restarts are disabled in XP. No BSODs before restarts. Event viewer used to show 'disk error' before I had replaced the hard disk. The restarts did not go away after replacement.

I have an Asus P4P800 motherboard with a P4 2.8ghz processor, and swapped it with an ECS 848p-a with a 3.0ghz processor, to see if that was the cause but still restarts. Also, should mention that I swapped the Asus with a used ECS mobo, also possibly defective.

Running Windows XP Pro SP3 on:

ECS 848P-A mobo, P4 3 Ghz, 2.0 GB Ram, ECS 848P-A mobo with a new 750 watt PSU (ultra lsp750), Sapphire Radeon HD2600Pro 512 MB video card, western digital caviar 1tb hd

I am pretty much running out of things to test/change without buying new replacement components. Please feel free to shed some expertise.

Checking netstat/tcpview I see that sometimes my "Local address" have resolved, instead of the name of the computer I see my local ip adress showing up as the "Local address".
What may cause this?

I have an XP home PC that VPNs with cisco software to a corporate network. There is an application hosted on a server that is located in a third-party network. I get "Page cannot be displayed" when I type in the URL or go to the page from favorites. I edited hosts, which is in the default location, but the name will not resolve. I can ping the server by IP but not by name. Other XP and 2000 PCs can reach the application after hosts has been edited, but this one cannot.

I checked the registry key for databasepath and it points to the default path for hosts.

Internet works fine. I don't have problems resolving other domain names.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:Hosts not resolving names

Try getting the IP manually?
