Applocker - Allow access to a specific application to a specific user only

Question: Applocker - Allow access to a specific application to a specific user only

Hello Everyone,
What I want to accomplish is to run the program "InstallShield" only with a specified user.
So Basically DENY TO EVERYONE (admins, users, ... ) and ALLOW to the specified user.
I've tryied to create a Deny rule to everyone and an allow to specified user rule but isn't working.
Pheraps it checks the deny rule first and if it's true it stop checking.
Is there a way to allow only my SA user to be able to run Installshield and to deny access to the app to everyone else?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I was browsing the web, looking for a way to disable the Start background for a certain user (he keeps toying around with windows 8) and other permissions too. Most things I disabled were meant to be used with gpedit.exe, but I used a user Snap-In in mmc.exe. However, I and some other people want to change the background. So how do I disable this setting for a specific user?

Answer:Force specific background color for a specific user??

I manage a school network and would like advice on an issue with offline files.
For reasons of access to teaching specific users on specific computers need to have their files stored on their local machine.
Other users who log into the machine do not need to store their files (I don't want them to).
I also don't want the specific users to store offline files on other local machines.
Is this possible using active directory and group policy ?
How would I go about it?

You can redirect specific users My Docs folder to a network share. Then the files will not be stored on the local machine, and you can also include that network share in your daily backup routines. As for the other users, just leave their My Docs folder set to the default path, and their files will be stored on the local machine.

okay, this is a weird problem. I can use my internet just fine except for two specific web-sites (that I know of) that crash when I try to access them. those two websites are: What.cd and utorrent.com. when I type them into the search bar, I get this:

This webpage is not available
Google Chrome could not load the webpage because what.cd took too long to respond. The website may be down, or you may be experiencing issues with your Internet connection.

I know it's not the website because other people I know can access them just fine.

but there is an even stranger problem. When I do a google search in the URL bar, usually it works fine. but when I include the words "torrent" or "what" in the search, the browser crashes the same way. I can search for anything else and it works fine. But if one of those two words "torrent", or "what" is included, it crashes. what. the. hell.

On a specific PC certain users (not all) cannot access Intranet sites. User can access intranet sites normally on all other PCs (we use roaming profiles). I have logged on to the PC and everything works as normal, while affected user was logged on I was
able to run IE 11 As Different User (myself) and all intranet was available. GPupdate, killed off the user in Registry and \Users, deleted all stored user credentials (user oddly had 16 separate Communication Server creds; all but 1 expired), reboot and issue

Folks
I've asked this question elsewhere and got no firm response. In Windows XP pro [or home for that matter].... if the system has multiple User accounts, particularly those with Admin permissions, is HJT user-specific? Do you need to login and run it multiple times in the various Accounts to get an accurate picture?

As the title indicates, I'd like to restrict the amount of bandwidth or internet access speed of a specific application on my PC. Preferably during certain times only, but even a way to enable and disable this rule as I need would be fine.

I have a 1Mb ADSL with a measly 3GB monthly cap (it's painful, can't afford more at the moment though), and Steam turns out to be the nastiest, bloated, deceptive, sneaky, bandwidth-whor........<a while later>........ piece of software ever released to the world at large.

So, I keep setting all my games to "Do not update automatically" (which needs to be re-set after each time a game is run), and it supposedly doesn't download updates or patches while a game is being played... Despite this, if I decide to play Borderlands, after launching the game I have to alt-tab into Windows, go to Steam, and pause the next "Suspended" 250MB or 300MB update that it's busy downloading... I may have a slow connection by most of your standards, but at a pretty constant 100KB/s, 3GB isn't exactly going to last me that long.

Now, I do have a service from my ISP that gives me 5 times my download cap between 1am and 5am (more info, if you like).. So I can get a theoretical 15GB a month if I play my cards right. Is there any firewall out there that will allow me to limit the access speed of Steam to 5KB/s or 10KB/s during specific times...?

Please note: I've tried NetLimiter's trial, and it works perfectly, but it's a bit pr... Read more

Depending on your network setup, you can just remove the default gateway from the user's computer. Hopefully the user shouldn't have admin rights so the user can't possibly go in and change the settings.

Is there a way pick which folders a user account can access? Id like to deny access to all folders but 2 to one user. I dont even want them to be able to see inside the folders. can i also prevent them from installing and altering the system? The user accounts menu does nothing specific like that at all.

Answer:Denying specific folder access to a user account in windows xp

Sure, just use permissions.

Systems folders are a no-no, so you can't really lock out documents and settings, program files, or the Windows directory unless you granularize everything (major PITA), but you can certainly lock them down by removing the folder (namely read) permissions (never ever ever deny!).

Otherwise, make their user account a plain vanilla user account. Nothing other than the membership of the Users group.

Actually if you feel saucy, fire up mmc from a command prompt, then File->Add/Remove Snap-In, click Add, choose Group Policy Object Editor, click OK, OK, then nose around in the Administrative Templates under User Configuration.

Help Appreciated.

In a Windows 8 PC, User account is "Standard" and Administrator account is different, in which how can I exclude some application which is from asking administrator password to execute?
My situation is specially for application updates such as java and/or adobe reader. Each time, when there is an update, it is asking administrator password to run the same.
Kindly assist.

Answer:Exclude specific application execution in "Standard User"

Hello Anil, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Normally you could use an option in the tutorial below to prevent standard "users" from being able to run a specific file.

Applications - Prevent Running Specified Programs - Windows 7 Help Forums

However, in this case, the user isn't the one running the application. The applications are set to automatically check for updates, so they're running themselves instead. If you turn off the check for updates automatically option in the java and Adobe programs, it should stop this. You will of course need to manually check for updates afterwards every so often though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I recently moved in with my aunt, and I had this same problem last summer when I visited. Now that I live here, its a much bigger issue :/

my laptop, which connects fine to all other wireless networks, has trouble on this one. It can browse the web all day, but the second a large file begins to transfer (video, a file download, etc.) it will drop the connection randomly, usually rather quickly. The computer does not need to be restarted to reconnect, it often reconnects on its own near-immediately, though sometimes I have to go to the system tray and reconnect manually.

I thought it was too far from the router, but my tower in the same room connects flawlessly, and going in to the same room as the router doesn't help. This same laptop has been fine on every other network, and every other computer is fine on this network. I've web crawled off and on about this for months, but no one's problem is limited to one computer/network combination.

If the solution is in a setting on this laptop, that would be awesome - the network is used for my aunts business and I'm really hesitant about changing any settings, and since it works for all other devices theoretically the router settings should be something I can adapt this device to as well. crossing my fingers, thanks guys!

For some time I have been unable to send email to one specific domain. If I send a very brief message (literally a few words) the email will go through: if there is an attachment or more than just a few words in the message body I receive a delivery failure notification. I have checked with my ISP (BT connect) and the ISP of the recipient and there is no evidence that the problem is due to filtering, blacklisting etc.

I have no problem sending emails (with or without attachments) to any other domain.

My pc runs Win98SE and Outlook 2000.

I signed up for a hotmail account and was able to send an email with a large attachment to the affected domain using that. I concluded the problem was my ISP, but before changing to another I ran one more test.

I sent a large email to the affected domain using my Win XP Pro laptop, also with Outlook 2000. It arrived!

This suggests the problem is specific to my PC setup. The problem started some time ago (maybe a year or so) - before that I was able to send emails to the domain from the PC.

I'd be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions about what could be causing this problem on the specific pc.

Hello all!

So I work tech support at my company and recently had one of our secretaries run into a virus. It was an email containing a fake resume in .doc format that once opened, attempted to direct the computer to download a trojan. AVG detected it right off the bat and quarantined it. I then ran a full system scan with AVG, Malwarebytes, and Spybot and everything came back clean.  I had assumed AVG along with Word being macro-disabled by default kept anything from actually happening.

However, at the time of the download she was running our company bookkeeping software (eClub for those interested) and it crashed once she tried to use it again. I check it out and see that the .exe to run eClub had been removed from the eClub folder (let's call it eclub.exe). Weird! So I go ahead and completely uninstall the program and reinstall, only to find eclub.exe was not reinstalled with it. I copy eclub.exe from another computer and try to paste it into the folder, and I'm told I don't have permission to do so. Then things get weird:

1. I uninstalled eClub completely again, removed the eClub folder and every possible saved setting for it.
2. I created a blank eClub folder (ex. C:\Program Files\eClub)
3. I can put anything I want into this folder, including .exes, EXCEPT for eclub.exe, getting the insufficient permission error.
4. I can put eclub.exe in subfolders of C:\Program Files\eClub without a problem

I checked all my permission levels and have fu... Read more

For the past 2 months I have been having a problem viewing a specific website (Real Clear Politics). This problem occurs with IE, Mozilla, and Google Chrome, from three different ISPs (Comcast, Wide Open West, Keyon Communications). After contacting the webmaster for the website they were baffled and recommended a workaround of eliminating the "www." at the beginning of the address. This solution has allowed me to view the website though it does cause annoyance and links directing to deeper within the site are broken when clicking on them and the "www." must be removed to access them.

Today while exasperated I came upon a possible cause and solution of flushing the dns cache

However when I tried to perform the operation ipconfig /flushdns I received the message
"The requested operation requires elevation."

Any help would be appreciated either aimed at the root cause (ideas, solutions) or at this flush dns issue.

Thanks very much

I have an issue with one specific website on my home computer. One or two pages will usually open then I get a "Website not available" msg on everything I do after that even logging out. Sometimes after multiple tries the next page will open. I did not have this problem on my computer until a month or so ago. Before that it worked fine. I do not have this problem on any other computer. I can also access the site with my Iphone without any problems. I have tried Internet Explorer, Goggle Chrome, and Fire Fox and still have the same issue. I have deleted the Cache, Cookies and turned off the antivirus software (McFee All Access). Nothing seems to help. I am convinced it must be some setting on my computer that was changed but do not know enough about computers to go beyond what I have mentioned. Hey All,

I've been working in a lab recently where in order to connect to some of the hardware, we have to connect to a special wireless network, we'll call it <hardware network>. In order for everything to work, i have to use a pre-assigned static ipv4 address <hardware IP>, and I must use a specific gateway. I can always make the changes by hand

right-click on start>network connections>right-click on the wifi connection>properties>tcp/ipv4 properties>use the following IP addres.

BUT the big annoyance is that this network doesn't have an internet connection (strictly for connecting to hardware), so I often have to switch between the networks (if i'm pushing code to git, for example). Is there a way for me to save this specific configuration to be automatically used if I attempt to connect to <hardware network>, but if I attempt to connect to another network <internet network>, it allows for automatic IP acquisition?

Hi,

I created a new user acount for my son on my primary desktop. Upon creating it and logging in to the newly created account I see a bunch of my applications on his desktop. I want to make his desktop as clutter free and only have the apps he needs and uses.

Hastily I go and delete some of the shortcut icons only to later find that the same icons have also been deleted on MY desktop.

I later figured out that anything edited under "public desktop" would be shared & affects all users.

Is the only way around this situation to move the specific contents within "public desktop" into My (administer) "desktop" folder?

Answer:Specific desktop icons for specific users

Of course. The point of having a Desktop folder in your user directory is for this purpose. So use it for its intended purpose. I fail to see the reasoning behind wanting another solution when one is already staring you in the face.

Answer:how to apply a specific sound to a specific action

Heh. I did that quite a few years ago with Win95.
First off, you'll need to convert that mp3 to a .wav file. Audacity can do it in seconds.
Put your .wav file in C: -> Windows -> Media
Then go to your Control Panel, select Sound, then click the Sounds tab.
Scroll down to Windows Explorer in the window you see, and click on Empty Recycle Bin.
The dropdown box below will turn from grey to white. In that dropdown window, choose the name of the .wav file, in this instance, perhaps "Toilet".
Click "Apply". Save your new sound scheme if you wish with a new name.
Every time you empty the Recycle Bin, you'll hear your flush.

I am trying to develop a GPO that will only apply to my primary laptop users while they are using their laptop but am having trouble getting it just right. What this GPO is meant to accomplish is to alter the default my documents location for my laptop users only while using their laptops. If the user signs into another system I don't want it to apply, and if someone else who is not the laptop's primary assigned user signs in, I don't want it to apply.

I have both a Laptops group under my Computers container and a LaptopUsers group under my user's container in AD, but when I apply the GPO to both of these groups it seems to affect these users everywhere, not just on their assigned laptops. The GPO is meant to redirect the My Documents folder from a network location to a local system location which will sync back to the network, so when the laptop is out of the office My Documents are still available.

Thanks for any advice!

Answer:Assigning GPO to specific users on specific systems

Put the GPO for the redirection into a sub OU of computers, link the GPO to that sub OU and then move the computers you want it to affect into that OU, in the scope/security options of the GPO, remove authenticated users and then enter the users you want the GPO to affect once you've done this, make sure its all tested.

I'm not an expert on GPO's and there is probably a much cleaner way to do it but thats how I've managed to do it in the past.

I have been trying to diagnose a particular problem where applications freeze for a split 2-3 seconds at random intervals. I really hope that someone might be able to provide some suggestions as I am starting to pull my hair out with this.

For example, I could be running the following programs:
Google Chrome
VLC Movie Player
Skype
Playng TERA Online.

While playing Tera (current active program) and watching a movie on VLC. VLC will freeze for a few seconds (at random) and then continue, while the game I'm playing does not freeze at all.

Another scenario:
Mozilla Firefox
Quicktime Player
MS Office - Excel
While reading a webpage in Firefox (current active program) and listening to music with quicktime, as I scroll through the webpage the browser will freeze and become unresponsive for 2-3 seconds. Meanwhile the music playing in Quicktime has not missed a single beat.

List of attempted fixes:Checked Event Viewer(Applications) for errors, none found.
Adjusted Virtual Memory/Paging file from 8162MB to an Initial size of 16324/Max 32648
Ran stress test (passmark) To check if I could isolate the freezing during certain tests. (Did not lock up at all after running 5 tests)
Used Windows Error checking (CHKDSK) on physical drive to check for errors (none found in Event Viewer)

On my computer some application works with one internet connection ( ISP ) and some through other internet connection ( ISP )

This problem has started since last few days.*

I flush dns and did most common solutions found on net like changing TCP/IP but nothing worked.

Is there any way to get rid off from this error ?

Or is there any way we can combine BOTH wireless internet connection in one PC and make some settings that which application works with which internet connection ( ISP )

I have 2 wireless internet dongles and I have 2 dongles which I can attach to my PC to connect to this internet dongles.

I read about Bridge connection and i did it but this didn't solved the error. May be because I am not able to make settings which application uses which internet connection

I know you can lock down an AD account to log into a specific machine but can you lock down a machine to only accept certain user logins? We have some mission critical machines that only have the specific rights with certain ID's but the users keep insiting on logging onto them as their own ID thus making the app not work properly and the machine go whacky. I want to set it up to deny logins other than using the specified ID's they have been given already (and not their own user accounts).

Is there any way to do this other than limiting EVERY user account (since I only need this limit on like 2 PC's per site I have).

Thanks for any help. (yes I know about runas types of solutions I really would like to keep these PC's as clean as we can and not have other user profiles on them at all).

TIA.

Answer:Lockdown user login on a domain machine to a specific user.

So I would assume these computers are attached to the domain, so their domain logins allow them to login to the computer.

Couldn't you use a combination of the local policies
Deny logon locally
Logon Locally

Both of them allow you to add a user or group to those local policy. I would think that if you deny the everyone group in the domain then set the users who are allowed to login in the other policy, that might work. I am not sure though. I would have to test it.

Hi!

I`m looking into creating a custom domain-wide default user for my company, but we have two major types employees depending on their tasks (this means - Software A is used by employee A and not by employee B and the other way around). In the Active Directory they are (of course) separated into OUs and Groups.

So I was wondering is it possible to create two default user profiles and somehow link them to a OU or Group in Active directory?

In Win XP, is there a way to force an application to use a specific connection while everything else uses a different connection? Here’s what I’d like to be able to do:

I connect from home to work via Verizon Broadband and Nortel VPN to access a secure LAN with shared drives and services, including intranet applications. This is already in place and working fine. The work LAN firewall is configured to block all Internet browsing attempts for all devices connected via VPN – not necessarily for security reasons, but rather to conserve bandwidth. The VPN switch and firewall share the same router and broadband connection, so incoming Internet requests from home through the VPN would go back out of the firewall – effectively doubling the required bandwidth for each request.

This configuration renders embedded Internet links in email and various documents almost useless. There are two choices at present to affect a workaround.

One is to drop the VPN connection when Internet browsing is required; browse to the Internet; and then reestablish the VPN connection after the Internet browsing is complete. This is cumbersome and inefficient at best, but it does work.

The second is to configure the VPN client to use split tunneling. This works too, but puts additional load on the Verizon Broadband connection between home and office (already the slowest link in the path). The whole point of the VPN is to insure a secure channel into the remote computer. You drill a hole a truck could drive through if you actually allow Internet connections while the VPN is connected!

The ability to have multiple connections is normally configured by the VPN host, and I suspect your company would take a really dim view of you compromising their network for your convenience.

I have a command line utility for some purpose. I start this utility from a COM DLL using ShellExecuteEx function. When calling ShellExecuteEx, i specify the lpVerb parameter as "runas" so that the utility is started elevated. I call
the COM Interface function from an exe client on its startup. So when i start the client exe, the utility is also started. My problem is that since the utility is started elevated, it always asks for the UAC confirmation prompt. I can't stand this because
there will be no manual intervention during this process. So I need the utility to be started without showing the UAC prompt, but still elevated when i start the client exe. Is there any way to achieve this? I would prefer some changes done within the utility
itself like changing the manifest file rather than some system settings changes. Any help will be appreciated..

Hello,

I need some help. I have a PC running Windows 7 Home Basic. The PC has a LAN interface and a WiFi interface. Both the LAN and WiFi have individual IP addresses and connects to two different routers.

What I'm trying to do is have IE10 connect only through the LAN card that connects to my computer's router. & have all other applications use the WiFi adapter to connect to the internet.

So far, I have tried to use ForceBindIP to bind the applications and use Route command to route the traffic.. but will no success.

Can someone please provide me detailed steps to go about this? I can be reached at [email protected]

Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Hello,
I have encountered an issue on one Windows 7 Enterprise x64 machine. An Application is slower by the factor of about 10 when run from a specific path. If i remove a space from the path it is normally fast. If I add it back the application is slow again.
What could be the issue here?
Thank you in advance, best regards
Edit:
I realized that I prematurely asked this question and there probably is a really good reason for this. I should first try to investigate with the Visual Studio Performance tools.

Hello,

I'm new to the board here so I'm not positive what the typical format is for posting questions but I'm getting the following message which causes the computer to reboot. The error pops up approximately 2 hours after the computer has been logged in.

Services.exe Application Error
The instruction at "0x606d334c" referenced memory at "0x02d40328". The memory could not be "read".

Clicking either OK or Cancel causes the computer to reboot. You can move the window to the side and ignore it but that doesn't fix the issue.

Thanks,

Hi and welcome to the forum

After doing a bunch of searching, I don't have any answer. I only found about 6 entries for 0x606d334c, no one had an answer

If you drag it across the screen, so you can continue to work, do you notice other problems like slowing down?

Hello,

I have an application, that has fairly small fonts and no option to increase the font size.
So I thought, that maybe there is a way to zoom the window of that application on the
screen!!
I quickly found several apps, promising to aid in doing that, but soon my disappointment
was quite big, as they were zooming the entire screen (and I couldn't see the entire window
of a maximized application, which I have open in parallel) or just an area around the mouse
or I had to specify which coordinates on the screen to zoom (how annoying can that be ?!?).
And I wasn't able to find an app, which would just say - click on the window you want me to
zoom in to and that's all...
Please kindly help me !! Thanks!

Answer:How to zoom a specific application's window ???

Welcome darkman088 to the forum.
Try this.

Start Orb and type in magnifier. You will get Windows built in magnifier.

I use it a lot. I use a selected button on my mouse to activate it when needed.
You can adjust the magnification from 100% to over 1000% but not much else.

It magnifies the whole page.

Hi and welcome to Seven Forums.

I do not think this is possible to do I would think they would interfere with each other.

EDIT: The only way to do this would be to have them connecting to different networks (eg. 192.168.1.1 for wired - then 192.168.2.1 for wireless)

Hi,

I have been OK with Windows XP on my old P4 PCs 2GB RAM (standalone No Internet) that I use for basic word processing and Photo Editing (mainly with FastStone Image Viewer FastStone Image Viewer - Powerful and Intuitive Photo Viewer, Editor and Batch Converter), but would like to upgrade to Windows 10 for more software options.
Am starting to do my homework and just read "Windows 10: Which version of Windows is best for my old Dell Latitude D620 laptop" https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/78010-version-windows-best-my-old-dell-latitude-d620-laptop-2.html
I was encouraged when read Fafhrd 's PC system specs and noticed "CPU: Intel socket 775 Pentium 4 540 HT 3200 Prescott " which is similar to mine.
For Windows XP I have found "Mini WinXP" that comes with Hiren's 15.2 Hiren's BootCD Fan & Discussion Platform on a bootable USB drive to be the fastest for many things.
Does anyone know if there is anything similar for Windows 10?
If not any suggestions for reducing Windows 10?
Thanks

I have tried several personal firewalls and have yet to find one of the free ones that will allow you to set firewall rules that allow only a specific ip or ip's to connect to a specific application. Most only have a trusted ip list.

Online Armor has this functionality but not for the free version.

I dont recall whether comodo has this ability but I did not like that comodo would have several outbound connections even when I did not have anything that should be connected out to the internet (something to do with cloud?).

Answer:Firewall that blocks application connect to specific ip?

It seems that the Windows' built-in firewall might be able to do what you're after by creating a new custom rule.

hi
there is an application that communicates with remote server. it connects to the server and the user selects the records/files (txt or tif files) it then starts downloading them.

the issue with it is that this application works from home or non company internet. but it doesnt works on company network.

i want to investigate whats stoping it.

it can successfully login to the server and shows the files needed to be downloaded. and it sometimes does starts downloading . but it fails midway through files.

we are behind a tmg.

and tmg client is working but no success with it.

so i want some application to be installed on that particular pc on which the application is not working .(again it works if non company internet is used). that should just monitor the packets sent and received by that application..

wireshark is too complicated.. and displays all packets flying by.

how can i corelate the packets shown in wire shark to that specific program ?

any other alternative ?

or how to tackle the issue with this particular app? that is what i want to solve.

update:
that application uses http to download data .

Answer:monitor the traffice sent and received by one specific application

Start with Process Monitor. It will not show you the packets, but it might provide a clue.

I have an IR receiver constantly attached to my computer. One program I use always registers it as a game controller, and stops me from using my actual game controllers in favor of it. Is it possible to automate disabling the IR receiver while the program runs, and re-enabling it after the application closes?

Answer:Is it possible to disable a device while a specific application runs?

Hi, if you know or can find a command to disable it, you can write a simple Autohotkey script- for example, a loop that periodically tests to see if your game is running, and if so, disable the device.

(Autohotkey is free and well supported- it can be programmed to test for the presence of a particular process in 1 line).

Probably 5 lines would suffice.

It comes with a comprehensive help file, detailing each command with examples.

AutoHotkey Beginner Tutorial

Or you could create a shortcut to a script that
a. launches the game
and
b. disables the device and exits when you choose.

This is a question concerning anonymity and maintaining privacy. I can use a proxy server, http or socks, and that shows I am connecting from another address than my home IP. However, some sites also track things like browser language and time zone. Language I can simply change by using an English version of my browser rather than a Swedish one, but what about the time zone? Even if I connect through say a US proxy, it will show my time zone as central European.

The question: Is there any way to either prevent the time zone from being detected through the web, or change the time zone which is displayed? I know I can of course just change the time zone of my system but I'd rather not as it will mess up logs and such. If there is another way of doing it, either with what utilities are in place or by additional software, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks in advance.

I have a laptop on my desk just for testing external access issues to our sites. I'd rather not.

I know it's been asked.. I think I've read over 20 posts on it with no clear and simple solution.

On my windows7 x64 station I have a hard wired LAN Network Connection and a USB wireless network conection. If both are up, IE uses the wired Lan connection. If I disable that LAN connection, IE uses the wireless. Great.. but?

What If I want to have both up? Reading emails and and accessing other intranet resources normally, but surfing via the wireless. Or even better, surfing from a specific browser or instance of a browser through the wireless Connection, and all others using activity through the wired Lan connection?

I'd like to do this without a Proxy or a VM. I understand there is a product called ForceBindIP that sounded very promising, but it does not support Windows 7 yet.

Is there maybe a firewall setting to route port 80 and 443 traffic to a specific Lan connetion? How about tweaking setting of the wired lan connection so that it fails to find DNS servers or anything on the outside?

I'm somewhat surprised this is not a setting somewhere already. I see great value having this.

Thanks.

Hello,

I use Tunngle to game online through LAN, and it uses a service named TnglCtrl.exe which uses 10mb of memory idle. Even though when I am not using Tunngle, it starts. If i close the service, Tunngle will refuse to run. So I would like to know if it is possible to do the following:

In Services, I set TnglCtrl.exe to Manual startup. When I would like to start the Tunngle application, TnglCtrl.exe would start automatically. Is this possible?

Thanks,

Just have it on all the time...10 MBs of RAM is absolutely NOTHING.

Hi,

I have had repeated BSOD with message (DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION) on a Lenovo E550 running Win 10 Pro 6 bit (upgraded from win 8.1pro 64). It occurred:
1. on sleeping, and
2. seemingly randomly. i.e. with applications open, idle with no applications open

I seem to have got around (1) by unchecking the "Turn on fast startup" option in Power Options. but the BSOD continues to occur at other times.

I have used the Lenovo System update tool to update the drivers it can but have reached the limit of my current capabilities/knowledge so am looking for some help interpreting the dump files and troublshooting

Per BSOD posting instructions I've run the utility and attached the zip file to the post.

Thanks for any advice/direction.

In the classic Control Panel, find "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" ans scroll all the way down. Is NNTP listed under protocols?
If so, what happens when you click "Change program"?
If not, what kind of software is it? Does it come with the installer?

Hi,
I downloaded a bespoke appn from a site called www.bobbooks.co.uk that allows you to put together your own pictures into specific book types and they then produce a proper coffee table stylebook, ideal for wedding pictures etc.

But for some reason as soon as I open the application it is trying to connect to the internet to check for updates as it is supposed to do and it cannot reach the server it's trying to. Similarly if you try and manually update it this happens.

I have allowed it as an exception in Windows Firewall so other thought is it's something to do with my router settings. Any suggestions? I can't understand why this would be the case though because AVG, Spybot, Adaware etc etc have never given me a problem like this and I've never had to manually configure my router in any way (it's a fairly standard Netgear one.)

I tried installing the same software at work and it worked straight away, so clearly it is something to do with my setup at home. Sigh....

I contacted Bob's Books and they said they've never had this problem before. And with the best will in the world they are not techies.

Any suggestions greatfully received as the (new) wife is hassling me to get it sorted so she can sort the wedding and honeymoon pictures out. Whoever said married life would be all bliss....

thanks,
Jonathan

Greetings everyone.  I've been dealing with this annoyance for two years.  I've been in contact with the support staff for the application, and have tried everything suggested, but the issue still stands.

The application is League of Legends.  The issue is when the game tries to launch lolclient.exe, I get this error: "Unable to connect to the server.  If you have a firewall, it may be blocking the connection.  Please refer to your firewall's documentation.  Would you like to retry the connection?"

If I click "Retry," I'm stuck on a black screen for ~30 seconds and then it loads successfully.  Sometimes it waits for ~30 seconds, prompts the error again, and then it's successful.  It always eventually succeeds, but it takes a while to get there.  Besides using a VPN and replacing hardware, I've tried literally everything suggested by the community and the staff.  All necessary ports are forwarded and confirmed as open.  I do not experience any persistent network issues besides this one.

I know that it's not actually related to my firewall for two reasons: 1. it happens on ANY computer on the network, regardless of software.  If I use the computer on another network, it connects immediately, and 2. I've completely uninstalled my firewall software, disabled Windows Defender, and ensured that all firewall-related services were stopped.  The router's internal firewall is disabled. &#... Read more

Hello,

I am writing this because I am seeking help with an Email related issue.

I am trying to use a program that retrieves Inbound Email attachments and resends them to a new destination… it is a dispatch program.

The Help Files associated with this program make reference to “The Attachment Folder” from “My Email Program”.

I am currently using Microsoft Outlook 2000 as my Email program although… I also have Outlook Express as an optional email program that I could use.

I would prefer to stay with Outlook 2000 though…
“if possible”.

I am enclosing an excerpt from the “Help” File associated with this program so you can see their exact reference to an “Attachment Folder from my Email Program”.

I have tried contacting The Program Manufacturers Tech. Support but as yet have not heard back from them.

I am looking for any advice or direction to be able to Locate and Identify this “Attachments Folder” in “my Email Program” that they make reference to.

If you can assist or advise me in any way I would appreciate it very much, as I am completely lost as to what to do next.

My Operating System is Windows 98SE.

Thank You
Respectfully

I want to do the following
increase width of an icon for a specific application application not all icons

I see this method

Registry Editor ->
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics -> MinWidth

I want to do that for a specific icon
Could any one help for that ?

Answer:Change Taskbar Icon Width for a specific Application

Hello Mialbedwy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could use the same method of pinning the Recycle Bin to the taskbar in a folder as a toolbar, but use the application you want instead of the Recycle Bin. This will give it a wider space.

Recycle Bin - Pin to Taskbar

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I purchased a game that has a known sound issue. It only plays all of the sound when using Stereo sound. 5.1 sounds are sadly incomplete. Currently I only know how to change all sound on my system to either be Stereo or 5.1. Is there any way that I can set this one application to use Stereo sound? Perhaps with a third party app?

Hello,
I have several versions of an application (Adobe After Effects) installed (I help test out prerelease versions of the software - which is nice) and I'd like to be able to set the precise application / file type association.

If I get a file's properties and 'Change...' the 'Opens with:' and browse to the exact application I want it to open with (After Effects version 13.6x123), then Apply/OK it, when I open the file, it just loads up the oldest version of the app (After Effects version 13.2) that Windows can find. Is there a better way to set filetype associations than the broken method that Windows is clearly attempting to use?

I have four versions of this app currently installed, all in C:\Program Files\Adobe. 90% of the time, I want to use the latest version, but occasionally need to use an older (public release) version to check how certain bugs/behaviours have changed, so need to keep all those versions installed.

I can use the workaround of opening the specific app and File > opening the file from within it, but it would be nice if I could get Windows to behave properly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

In Windows 7, the input method is application-specific, i.e., when you change the input method in one application, it doesn't affect other applications. However, in Windows 8 this seems to be changed: the input method is system-wide.

The problem is: I need to use Chinese input (either the embedded Windows Chinese input, or the one from Google, I prefer to use the later), which seems to only use US keyboard layout. However, I am using Finnish layout, so the locations of symbol keys are different. I need to frequently switch the input methods, which is really annoying. I really miss the one in Windows 7: the Chinese input was only effective for the application I needed to type Chinese

Problem: Notebook on which Local Admin account seems to run fine, but a Local User account runs very slow. User is a member of Local Admin group and Local Users group. Notebook is not joined to a domain. HJT was installed and run under the user that is experiencing the problem.

I have installed and run Spybot S&D and fixed the issues it found. I'm afraid that I may have "fixed" something that I shouldn't have. Although, it was running slow before I did this, which is why I am working on the computer in the first place. It seems to be running slightly slower after is used SS&D.

I have also run a full scan from Symantec Antivirus v10 Corporate Edition (fully updated) with the option to scan for security risks enabled.

I think that I may have to do an in-place upgrade of Windows, but before I do that I figured I'd post the log here in hopes that someone may find something that can fix it easier.

Thank in advance for your time!

Not sure what is going on, but I have an XP Pro box here at work that when rebooted by automatic updates or any reboot, boots to a specific generic user name on our network. This user name is basically for a machine running embedded XP that is connected to the network to pull job files for manufacturing parts. I have this machine locked out of internet access through the ISA Firewall policy.

The XP Pro box is our engineering dept. that creates the programs for the machine to run which are then saved on the server. Problem started about 3 weeks ago and it is driving me crazy trying to figure it out. It first started just continually re-booting with out ever getting to the log on screen. I got by that by trial and error, finally booting to "Last Known Good" which still automatically logged the generic user on w/o the log on screen ever showing up. From there i can indeed log off and back on as any user.

I logged on as Administrator and have run all of the required scans and tools and submitted them in the Malware Forum where Kestrel13 tells me they are clean.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

I installed a new SSD for one of the employee in my office. I installed win 8.1 pro. installation all was fine.

But now the specific user, when he logins to the Computer, it is very slow for him. Even right click pop up menu is also taking 5 seconds to load. His excel files in the network is also taking lot of time to open and work. Most of the resources are taking
time to load.

However in the same PC if I login as administrator the computer flies. It has no lag and working properly.

He tried login in another PC and has no issues. Only in this PC hes problem.

I have updated the updates, drivers. Antivirus is also installed.
He was using HDD before. His PC was already slow. That is why i installed an SSD for him.

At work one of my users had a virus on their laptops so he brought it to me. Symantecs found it and took care of it. Ran a scan with Malwarebytes and another with Symantecs, both returned clean. Gave the laptop back to him, he calls me within the hour and says the infection is still there. I went down and sure enough the thing was still there, once again Symantecs found it and took care of it. Ran a scan with Malwarebytes and another with Symantecs, both returned clean. Gave the laptop back to him, had him log on with me there. And AGAIN it appears, bu this time only after he logged on with his 3G card. Ok, so found it there was the culprit, took the laptop scanned it cleaned it and got him a new 3G card, finally over right??? Wrong!!! It is still there, but only shows when he logs on. What the hell??? How is that possible for a virus to be user specific like that??? I'm not looking for it to be cleaned, I'm just gonna wipe it and image it, but really what the hell??? How is that possible???

When I tried to install itunes, it gave me an error that said: Could not access network location %AppData%. Apple said empty the temp folder and it installed. Then it after install, it said: The Required Folder Could Not Be Found. I also had that problem with "APPDATA" in many other installs. Itunes works just fine in another account. Apple support told me to create another "test" account to see if it is user specific. When I tried to open that new account it said: The user profile service failed login. The user profile could not be started. Or something like that. Apple said it is probably an OS problem. They did not tell me much more because they freaked out when I told them
I was using MediaMonkey to sync music because iTunes would not work. Apple is so paranoid. Any help to my problem?

Answer:User Specific Problems

I had a similar problem - perhaps not quite the same as you - but perhaps something in my experiences will be some value, if only small..

I store my personal files on a remote machine. For me this is a file server down the other end of the house. So I changed the location of my personal folder (I use regedit but there are numerous ways to achieve this). If the remote location was ever unabvailable I got the same error - "The required folder could not be found" and iTunes would terminate. At times I've use a USB stick for my library and in some cases, machines of my sons.. But if the locations is not resolvable iTUnes balks. Just my 2 worth

We're running Windows SBS 2003, and would like a specific user account (which happens to be a restricted user) to have specific DNS settings, regardless of workstation.

That should be possible via GPO, but isn't working.

DHCP seems to be workstation-specific rather than user-specific, and manual modifications will affect other users on those workstations.

Ideas?

Thanks.

My goal is to start Windows Event Viewer from a command line, with the Application node already selected, showing only entries for my specific application, or provider? In other words, I need to filter it by the Source column for the "Application X" using command line call:

So far I could figure out that I need to do this to show Application node:

Code:
eventvwr /c:Application
but I can't figure out how to specify provider in the /f: parameter, and the example given if I run "eventvwr /?" does not help much.

Any idea how to do it?

I've looked around quite a bit on both this forum and Google and can't seem to find an answer, so if this has been answered before, please forgive me and be so kind as to provide a link to a relevant topic.

I am using a TiddlyWiki stored on a USB flash drive. What I would like to do is set a parameter on the shortcut so that it always launches with a specific portable browser, also stored on the pen drive, rather than the defauly browser that is stored on the computer it is attached to.

Likewise, I have a few PDFs that I use regularly between machines, and would like to have them open using a portable PDF reader (Sumatra) which is also stored on the flash drive. That way, the PDF will always open to my last saved page, regardless of which machine I am using.

The computers I use are a home desktop PC (Win 7), home netbook (Win XP) and work laptop (Win XP).

If there is a different way to achieve this without using shortcut parameters, I would be more than happy to give it a whirl.

Cheers!
Matt

To All,I was unable to access a folder on a Win7 Home Premium PC from a WinXP Pro SP3 PC even though the user accounts on both PCs were in the same workgroup and had identical names. Also I had done the following:Use Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center then...click "Choose homegroup and sharing options" then...click "Change advanced sharing settings" then...scroll down to HomeGroup connections and press the following radio button: "Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers".I had also modified the properties of the folder to indicate sharing "with specific people", and the selected user account name was indicating read/write permissions. The key step I had overlooked was to apply a password to the user accounts on both PCs.I'm writing this because the requirement for passwords on both accounts hadn't been emphasized enough in any of the references I had consulted. The info may have been there, but it just didn't sink in.Since I am a relative newcomer to Win7, I stand ready to be corrected. If you know of a way to give read/write access to a folder on a Win7 box for a specific user on a WinXP box (and ONLY that specific user) without having passwords on the user accounts in both machines, please let me know.Thank youRayS

I'm having some crazy keyboard issues that are literally driving me mad.  I had this issue a few months ago and I solved it by simply creating a new user in Vista.  Essentially, whenever I open up a game, regardless of it being windowed or fullscreen, my keyboard bugs out.  All my buttons are irresponsive unless I am holding shift, ctrl, or alt.  To press "enter" I have to have my shift key pressed as well.  The problem occured today while I was letting Mp3Gain adjust the volume of my Itunes library.  I played a game of Prototype and left the house for a while, letting Mp3Gain run.  When I came back and tried to play, the problem began.  I honestly don't know what could have occured however if I can't solve the problem I'm doing a fresh install with 64 bit Vista, as I just recently upgraded from a Pentium D to a Core 2 Quad.Specs:Windows Vista ProMSI G33M MoboIntel Q5500 Core 2 Quad 3.15 GHzEvga GTX2602x1gb Patriot somethingorother, 2x1gb G.skill DDR2Tagan BZ800 800w PSU

Is there any way to personalize this without having to adjust every time someone logs in or out?

I'd kinda hoped Microsoft would address this rather obvious personal preference with Vista, as it was equally a pain with earlier operating systems.

I think I know the answer to this, but I would appreciate some help quick, this is for our admin assistant who is the president's sister and has an attitude. I have her on OWA, but that won't keep her happy for long....

She called me this morning saying she could not access her email. We have w2k workstations with outlook 2k and exchange 2k. She had rebooted still nothing. I logged her out and logged in as myself - starts up fine. I know an easy fix would be to delete her account and recreate, as I suspect that to be corrupt somehow... but if anything is changed, I'll have to listen to her complain. Plus I try to do a detect and repair under my account since I can get into it, it stops halfway with error 1706. But it works fine otherwise under me. I uninstalled office professional completely and reinstalled it, same thing. I have to go into task manager and it is locked with 99 cpu taken.

Help please!!!

Answer:Outlook 2k cannot open for specific user

I think you best bet is to just create her another account and let her use that one and map her My documents to the new user profile just wondering how much cpu does it take up when you are logged in using access

Hi,

I have a home network consisting of several machines, all running Windows 7. I want to share a folder located on one machine, called PC1, with another machine called PC2. All other machines on the network are not to have access to this folder.

On PC1, I created a non-admin user account with the same login and password credentials as the admin user for PC2. I then right clicked the folder I want to share on PC1 and went into advanced sharing and added this user to both the Sharing and Security tabs and provided full control permission. I also removed the Everyone group from both tabs, since I only want PC2 to access this folder.

With this setup, I am able to see the shared folder in Networks when on PC2 but I get an error saying access denied if I try to open it. Not sure why I'm getting this error since I added the user and provided access rights.

I have noticed that if I go to PC1 and add the Everyone group back in, I'm able to access the folder without any errors. But this defeats the purpose of providing access to only one machine. If anyone has suggestions, I would like to hear them.

Thanks.

Well, my dear son is getting to be quite the computer whiz....at 5 years old! Why, he knows more about computers and how they work more than I did when I graduated from University, back in 1992. <OMG>I want to "aggressively limit" his access to programs, partitions, and anything that would harm the computer if he did the wrong thing. Now, here's my problem.1) I run Vista Home Premium (READ: no Group Policy Editor, gpedit)2) Do not, do not, direct me to that massive spreadsheet that Microsoft has available for Vista Home users, that list the registry tweeks for GPEdit....I don't plan on editing the registry manually.3) Parental Controls help me with controlling which websites to block and which Programs to block, but I need to do MUCH MORE.a) Prevent access to and hide specific partitions (like the Windows partition) from use. Prevent access to Control panel, Admin functions (ie: Computer Management, Event viewer, etc.)c) Block regedit from running.d) Prevent accessing Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL)e) Disable Right-click (context menu).f) Show only certain programs in the Start Menug) Prevent changes to wallpaper, screen savers, etc.h) However, allow Antivirus, Firewall, Windows Update to work and update normally, but obviously, prevent access or changes to it.i) Disable Autorun on all flash drives.j) Prevent accessing Tools on Internet Explorer or Firefox. These are just some of the things I want to do.Think of this as a computer at a Public Library or Reso... hi guys,

i'm pretty much up to speed with most things sbs related now (that said, it still feels like i learn something new everyday!), but email is still something i've got to get my head around.

i'm looking for some pointers on how you guys setup non user-specific email accounts in sbs... to be a little more specific, i'm talking about the typical '[email protected]', or '[email protected]' etc that you find in most organisations.

i guess the obvious route would just be to setup a new user called, as per the above examples, 'sales' and 'support'. the problem i see there is that as well as a mail account they also get a domain account, a home directory, a computer etc.

how do you go about this? the way i suggested above? or are you able to somehow just create a mailbox? and how do you handle 'delivery' of this? do you get users to just use webmail? do you setup outlook with multiple exchange accounts? (not sure you can actually do this? although i know you can certainly 'open' other users folders from within your exchange connection), do you set it up such that access to the mailbox is delegated and the nominated person simply opens up the inbox folder from within their outlook, or do you setup a forwarder into the nominated persons inbox?

i suspect what i'm asking above could be linked to the split between private and public folders? i'm still yet to fully understand what those two terms me... Read more

Answer:non 'user-specific' email accounts in sbs...

It's actually quite simple. You can take a users mailbox..and have it catch e-mail for any other name your little heart desires. An e-mailbox can receive e-mail for many different names.

Say you want "[email protected]" to go to the mailbox of the user up at the front desk...say her name is JDoe

Go to JDoes active directory properties....e-mail tab..and add that sales address as an SMTP address. You can set it as her primary if you wish to..so when she sends..other people see it as coming from [email protected] instead of [email protected]

Hi,

I'll do my best to describe my problem. Have a small home network with 3 computers. Call them "A", "B", and "C". On all three, I have specific folders shared.

However, I'm having a problem accessing only some of those shared folders on "A". Computer "A" has two users - Scott and Anne. Computers "B" and "C" each have only one user - Scott for "B" and Anne for "C". From both "B" and "C", I can access any shared folders on "A" that are in Scott's My Documents. However, I can't access any shared folders that are in Anne's My Documents. It doesn't matter whether I share Anne's entire My Documents folder or specific subfolders under it.

I'm guessing this is some sort of user issue. However, it would then seem that from computer "B" I would only be able to access Scott's docs whereas from computer "C" I would only be able to access Anne's docs. Instead, both "B" and "C" can or cannot access the same things.

Appreciate any help I can get. It's starting to drive me nuts. (And Anne is not real happy about not being able to get to her stuff.)
