Question: External Hard Disk not detected, visible in Disk Manager

Hi, My Seagate 2TB external hard disk is not getting detected by my PC, doesn't show in 'Safely remove hardware' option.

However, based on one old thread, I installed Partition Recovery Wizard and this is how the scan looks. Please help.

Preferred Solution: External Hard Disk not detected, visible in Disk Manager

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

Answer:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Regards,
-Alex

Hi, "Huston, I have a problem"

Bought a second hand thinkpad yoga s1 first gen. Running win 8.1 all up to date

Having a number of problems setting it up

Latest, I plug in a new USB3 2tb passport drive. (seagate backup plus slim)

It shows in disk manager but not in explorer, ie I can't see the disk or any of the content.

The drive works fine on my old win 7 laptop, installs automatically and all content is visible.

I have hented through the forums and seen a variety of possibilities. Nothing seems to totally fit.

I tried uninstalling all the USB controlers and re starting but this just caused more problems and the drive did not show up at all, ie not in disk manager either, so just restored to original condition.

All help appreciated. I like the machine and need something like this for my work / studies BUT it has to work! ;-)

Cheers,

R.

Yesterday, I started a download and kept the pc on with my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex External HDD 1TB plugged in. After I woke up I realized that there was a power cut and the computer went off unexpectadly (I had no UPS or any backup system). And, I found that my Ext HDD was not seen in my computer anymore (It was working perfectly until before I went to bed).
In device manager, under 'Disks' it shows 'GoFlex Hard Disk', but in BIOS or Disk Manager there is no sign of this HDD.

I really need the data in the HDD badly. Please help me recover it.
P.S. I read somewhere that keeping the HDD in freezer might help and give a little more time. Is that true? Worth the risk?

Answer:External HDD gets detected in Device Manager but not Disk Manager or seen in 'My Computer'

Power outage probably killed something in the enclosure or its PSU. The drive in the enclosure is probably fine. I would remove the drive from the enclosure and put it in a dock or install it in a desktop computer before considering freezing it. Freezing is usually reserved for click of death drives, and a last ditch effort.

Well, i'm getting riiiigggghhhhh at the end of my tether here

I'm running a Toshiba Laptop 2.8ghz
512 mb of ram
BIOS: Toshiba version 1.8 (updated)
Windows XP professional SP2

Right, so i purchased a Western Digital 200gb hard drive and mounted it onto an external case with USB 2.0. This external case has a 12+ volt adapter with 1.5am (max 18W) . The hard drive is set on Master.

(note: i have anoter USB 2.0 80gb seagate drive that works like a charm, connected to same computer)

Here is the problem, i connect up the 200gb HD to one of my ports. THe computer happily runs that new USB mass storage device says hello. Then everything goes to hell. I opened up explorer expecting my lovely new HD to appear. Uh oh, this is goign to be one of those long days (week really).

I opened up disk management expecting to find it there and only needing a new drive letter assigned, but nope the new HD is not there, just the two i already have (internal, and external 80gb). Its as if my computer refuses to acknowledge it

Next i go to device manager and lo and behold there is a new entry under disk drives that says "Disk Drive" So here i'm thinking what the heck is going on?

I contact Western Digital demanding nicely for an explanation. We go through all the usual basics and crap ie viruses, spyware and drivers.
All drivers are up to spec USB 2.0, Xp SP2, and as far as i know there are no specific drivers for Western Digital hard disks, only the... Read more

Hello All,

I have a 250 GB external hard disk. I copied some movies onto it from a friend who now says that his drives were affected.

The hard disk ran but after I removed it and plugged it in again, it is not being detected by any computer. The blue color light glows and I can feel the motor running but it is simply not being read by any computer.

Can you please help me with some suggestion ?

I thank you in advance,

Kanwer

I brought a Seagate Expansion Hard Disk about six months ago and have never had problem with it till now....
The problem is that my HD does not get detected if its plugged in after the windows startup.... In most cases it hangs my PC. The green light blinks so I'm positive that it's not a problem of the HD. The safely remove hardware icon also comes up. But the Autoplay menu doesn't show up and its icon wont be there in My Computer (that is, if I'm able to open My Computer. As I already stated, in most cases, the PC gets stuck).
I discovered that there are no issues if I keep it plugged in the USB port before the startup, but that is an inconvenience since I only have one free port . Ive tested with other pen drives and they work just fine. I even tried plugging it to a different port, but to no avail. It would really nice if you could help me with this....
Thnx in advance.....

Answer:External Hard Disk not being detected...

Try it on another machine. It sounds like the drive is having some problem. Run chkdsk /r on it in the other machine and check for bad sectors.

Hopefully, the data was backed up recently. External drives are the most unreliable of all storage media. If not, you better make a fresh backup in case something is wrong with the drive.

Hi

I joined the forum as the activity seemed high and knowledgeable . Here is my problem.

I have an 500 Gb external hard drive (one of those slimeline jobs) and use it for backup and external storage fvrom my personal laptop.
It worked fine for ages and for a while I didn't use it (didn't need it).

When I went back to use it recently it wasn't detected by my laptop (Win 7) anymore. I can feel and hear it spinning but it is not being detected. Being somewhat technical I tried the following

- I went to my local PC hardware store and bought a new cable. They helpfully plugged it in there and it showed up straight away there.
- When I got home I plugged it into laptop and again not detected.
- I trawled around disk management and no luck in it being seen.
- We have a desktop PC in the house (running Vista) and when I plugged it in there it was seen find there as well.
- My other USB devices are not having any problem so as far as I know the ports are fine.

Any ideas as I am tearing the hair out of my head

Have you tried plugging it into a different usb port on your laptop? When it's plugged in, what does your device manager show...any yellow triangles or question marks? Is there any software/firmware to download?

Hey,
I had my external hard disk connected to my laptop, and the wire accidentally came out for a second. But right away, it reconnected to my laptop. However, rather than working normally, my computer detected it as a new drive. And then I don't know what happened but it wouldn't be detected at all.
The light on the hard disk is on, so I know it's not an issue with the power. But I don't think it's being detected anywhere on my computer because no pop-up or anything appears to install a new hardware. Nor is the drive visible in My Computer.
I tried reinstalling but to no avail. I also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the hard disk a number of times. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am having a 650GB Samsung Hard Disk. Once I was transferring files from the hard disk to my PC and lights went out. Now when I connect my hard disk it is not being detected though it shows up in the Disk Management menu. I have tried formatting the HDD but it shows time remaining as 300 hours so I had to stop it midway. Is any other solution available for it...??? Please help...!!!

If you feel confident enough, Open it up and remove the hard drive from inside the enclosure and fit it directly in to your pc.

This will help determine if the hard drive or enclosure is to blame.

Gday

I have emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply, but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

So I installed Vista, and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again (yer lazy I know, but that's what backup's are for).

Checked with the fresh install, that my two external hard drives, had there drivers and were present. They were ... Read more

I have had the same Toshiba external hard drive for years and have never had any problems plugging and using from any machine, mac or pc. I recently had to reformat my hard drives and re-install windows 7, and ever since I have been unable to access my external from this machine. It still works fine on my laptop, and when I plug it in to my tower, it still recognizes that "External USB 3.0" has been plugged in and downloads the drivers. However, the drive appears neither under my computer nor disk management, nor diskpart -> list volume. It does show up in my device manager as USB mass storage but uninstalling the drivers and plugging it back in does nothing. Is there anything I can try before moving all my files off and formatting the drive, and will that even help? Thanks for reading.

Hello, i am using a seagate 1TB harddisk. When i connect it to usb port in front panel of my CPU, the computer is not detecting it.

But When i connect it to usb port in back panel of my cpu, It works fine. My system detects the hard disk and and everything is fine. How to correct this strange problem

Note : my Pen drive and other USB things works fine in all the ports in both front panel and back panel.
Please help me.each and Every time when i want to connect my hard disk, I have to take my CPU out from its shelf and connect it in the back usb port. Its tideous for me.

Answer:Seagate external hard disk not detected in front panel USB port

Well not exactly knowing what type of a computer we are talking about here, I can only say, that what your are reporting is completely normal. Most computers I've ever touched have passive styled USB ports on the front of the computer, and aggressive USB ports off the back that can handle just about anything you can hook up to it.

So stop trying to connect that external hard drive off the front, not enough power and not enough data exchange rates. I would recommend that if you have all your USB ports off the back of the computer taken, I would start thinking seriously about an "amplified" 4 port USB HUB. Remember the HUB your looking for has it's own power source, and does not relying on the computer at all for it's power.

The following one is a good one, a friend of mine got her's about a month ago and has not yet reported any problems.

I have an external hard drive that wasn't showing up anywhere on my computer, so I replaced the hard drive case and now the external hard drive is found in device manager, but not in disk management or my computer. I am running windows 8, and there is data on the external hard drive that I would like to have access to.

The disk drive that is in the case is a Samsung HD103SI

I have used the rescan command in disk management. It showed as Disk 2 Unknown and not initialized. (Please note this is not a new disk and it has data on it that I am hoping to retrieve).

I am having this Hard Disk problem. My old Hard Disk (Samasung 500GB) (bought in 2010) started showing signs of corruption (like Windows doing chkdsk at every boot, and data getting lost). So I bought a NEW Hard Disk (Western Digital 1TB) last month (Sep 2016) to backup all the data from old one. I didn't have time to backup but wanted to use PC so I Clean Installed Windows 7 64bit on the New Western Digital 1TB and used it about a month without any problems.

A couple of days ago i decided to backup up the data. I reformatted the New Western Digital 1TB with Gparted and did a clean Windows 7 Install again. I connected the old Samsung 500GB to the motherboard and started copying the files to the new Western Digital 1TB.

Suddenly Windows showed me an error "Windows detected a hard disk problem" which makes sense because the Samsung 500GB is old and might be failing BUT the error is showing both of my Hard disk in the dialog box.

Is my new hard disk corrupt as well?
Why is Windows showing my new hard disk as failing?
Can Windows mistakenly show both hard disk in error?

Please help i am confused. sorry for a confusing question. i will answer anything required.

I have taken the screenshot of the error message, they are in attached files.
1)The 1st Screenshot shows both my Hard disk in the error box (OLD Samsung and NEW Western Digital WD)
2)The 2nd Screenshot shows only one of my Hard disk and its the new one (Western digital WD)

Running Win98se with Hyperos on 1st HD (Master)Running second HD (Slave) as non-bootable data drive.Having installed a second HD which I formatted and partitioned using Disk Manager (supplied and recommended by Seagate) I now have problems in trying to use Partition Magic to repartition my drives. An error message says that Disk Manager is still detected on Drive 1. I have long since removed Disk Manager from my Master HD (I think, using the uninstall routine). I understand this whole problem has been caused by Drive Overlay code written to the MBR by Disk Manager and that Disk Manager was a big mistake. Oops!I have been advised that I have to wipe the Drive Overlay from the MBR on my HD and as I understand it, the only way to resolve this now is to completely wipe the HD (low level format). If this is the case, I have a couple of questions:Do I leave the Slave HD connected and reformat both at the same time? (I want to get rid of all traces of Disk Manager). If the answer to this is yes, I thinkthat it woul dbe okay to use the Powermax.exe utility (which I last used on my Maxtor Master HD) on the Seagate slave HD as well? (Both are ATA HD's with capacities in excess of 500MB)If anyone can shed some light on this for me I would be very grateful.

My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, ... Read more

Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.

I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.

Options:

Hello,

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Please help, thank you.

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

Answer:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

Answer:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

My computer keeps refusing to start up. I have to re-install windows each time. Hard disk keeps making a "funny" noise. I have an 80gb hard drive and have used 40gb so far. I want to back up everything incase my hard drive fails. Could I backup to an external disk drive? would I need to install windows on the external drive. or is there a better way to save all my files, downloads, and software? When I bought the PC it came with software already installed and a recovery disk. But obviously I dont want restore to factory settings as I will loose everything. Any advice would be much appreciated.

You could use commercially available back up software like Ghost click here or Acronis click here

I also tryed startup repair and this failed to find any errors, I should point out though that windows explorer shows my internal hard drive, which is the drive my OS is running from but disk manager refuses to show it and i dont get a "show hidden devices" in the view tab either. I also have XP installed on a different partition to run some old stuff i like to use and the disk manager in xp is also hiding my hard drive. any ideas??

Hi There FolksI've done a fresh install of Windows XP ProI have a 1.5tb hard disk which has been partitioned. The c: is 803gb (master) and d: is 790gb.I installed some disk partioning software, and weirdly, it lists the available drives as follows:- Size* Unallocated 104.01 gbc: NTFS 811.57*: Other 259.39 gbd: NTFS 790.24gbThe c: and d: are drives i can access, obviously. But the d: seems fishy as the sum of the disk sizes of c: and d: are greater than 1.5gb. If i try and resize the c: to 500gb, i get a message saying "Not enough free space around the current partition for move/resize", even though i've only used 8.03gb of disk space on the c: .I would be grateful if somebody coudl tell me what's going on here.Hope you can help!

My laptop configuration is Intel Dual Core,2GB RAM,500 GB HDD.This is lenovo G570 model. It came with DOS and no OS.If we start laptop it shows u blank screen with command prompt.I installed win 7 professional on it.While installing it asked me to select space for OS so I selected 20GB for that. After that it didnot give any option for hard disk partitions.OS got installed. After completing the installation I came to know that only 20GB is accessible and remaining 470GB is not visible to us.How to solve this problem.

Answer:Hard disk space is not visible

It came with DOS and no OS.DOS is an OS. That is what the OS stands for. Disk Operating System. A Windows Command Prompt is not DOS.I doubt very much if a computer of the specification would come with such an ancient OS as DOS so I think there is something you are not telling us hear.Did you go to computer Management? If the remaining space is unallocated to you need to partition and first it before it can be used.Stuart

I have a 2,5" 500GB external hard-drive with a single partition (NTFS).
I can see it in the disk management utility (see attached screenshot) but it doesn't have a drive letter nor can't I assign one.

Attached to another PC running Windows XP it says "unknown partition" but also error-free and NTFS.

The problem could have been triggered by unplugging the harddrive without securely removing it.

on Disk Mgmt, right click the offending disk.

Hi,

I have a bit of a problem where one of my hard drives can not be seen in My Computer or in Disk Management. Firstly I thought the drive had died on me, but then I noticed I can still see the drive in Device Manager and I can still disconnect it using "Safely Remove Hardware".

I removed it, then rebooted the machine and it still could not be seen in My Computer".

In Device Manager and "Safely Remove Hardware", I have noticed that my other drives are labelled in the following format;

WDC WD2500JD-00GBB0
WDC WD2000JD-00GBB0
WDC WD2000JD-22HBB0

The one that doesnt work is labelled;

WDC WD2500

It has the 2nd part of the identifier missing, they are all Western Digital drives.

Does anyone know what has happened to this drive and if there is any way to recover it without loosing the data?

Cheers in advance

The folders on my external hard disk are not visible. I followed Cottonball's suggestion from one of the threads on using Roguekiller to eliminate the virus. I downloaded RogueKiller and scanned my disk. After that i deleted the malware it detected.

Subsequently, I also tried the following command:

attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d F:\*.*

After doing all of this still i am unable to access system volume information. I guess The virus persists. any help to fix this issue will be highly appreciated.

Answer:External disk -folders not visible -access denied system volume info

Hello zoyana Welcome to the Seven Forums!

If you had a spare hard drive to back files upto the live and harder manual method would allow you to use a live Linux disk in order to copy and paste files over to the second drive and then simply nuke the external to insure it was totally bug free seeing an entirely new volume created in it's place. That would still require tunning a thorough bug sweep over the rescues files to insure none had been recoded by the malware however.

For using the other guy's OS for a project like this I can point you to an older thread showing to make a live data recovery flash drive with ubuntu at the time seen at Using the "Other OS" For a USB Rescue Device?

Presently Linux Mint or Linux Mint Debian would the slightly larger but preferred distro. Knoppix Live on dvd only is also one of the others for this providing the partition information is intact. If the partition table is toast due to corruption then other options like disk recovery program would then be needed to restore the partition(s) on the drive itself.

A fast test would be going into the Disk Management tool however found under Adminstrative tools/Computer management/Storage and right clicking on the effected volume to use the change drive letter option. That will show if the volume is able to be remounted in Windows without problems.

If that fails then the live method for data recovery would be an option to consider since the distro is not able to be infected by the ma... Read more

Two of my USB external Hard drives, a Fantom 600 GB and a Western Digital My Book 500GB cannot be seen in My Computer. I can see them in Device Manager and that says that they are working properly and the drivers are up to Date. In Disk Manager the 2 external drives had a black bar unlike the other drives which had blue bars. The 2 external disks had a number assigned to them but no letter.

I have tried diskpart in the command prompt, was able to assign a letter, then had to format the drives and they did show up in My computer as valid empty external hard drives with the correct amount of space on them. But when I tried to recover the backed up data for one of the disks (less than a third of the capacity of either drive) they went back to not being recognized by My Computer ans in disk manager had a black line with no letter again.

I just went through that process again, got both drives back and tried to recover the backed up files to my Fantom drive and lost the Fantom drive once again.

I am attaching screen shots of my current My Computer (Computer in 7) Device Manager and Disk Manager. In Device Manager you can see the Fantom. The My Book is the WD 5000AAV. In Disk Manager the My Book shows healthy with Disk 1 and the letter L. The Fantom is Disk 2 with no letter and a black bar. In My computer, the My Book is there but not the Fantom.

Any ideas for this. I am about to just recover my computer to factory setup and start new. I have sa... Read more

Answer:External drives show in Device Manager & Disk Manager but not Computer

Hi Dick1030,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Please do as follows:

1. It is unusual for the System Reserved Partition to have a drive letter. Please remove the drive letter.

2. Please remove (always Safely Remove) all the external drives including any card reader and do a drive cleanup as indicated here. http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/298744-usb-thumb-drives-not-recognised-not-drive-letter.html#post2477076 It will clean your system of all non-present devices and you will be starting with a clean slate.(Incidentally this can resolve many drive letter assignment confusion of Windows OS, as you can see in the referenced thread.)

3. After you reboot on completion of the drive cleanup, plugin only your WD My Book and the Fantom drive. As you plug-in the driver for each device will be installed ab-initio. You can watch it.

4. Now take a screenshot of the Disk Management and post. While taking the screenshot, click on "Show/Hide Console Tree” and “Show/Hide Action Pane” buttons on the toolbar on top to hide those and also pull up the center partition line up as much as possible so that we get a clear and full view.

5. Also tell us whether you are sure that you had formatted the Fantom drive and it contains data and whether you want to recover the data..

(Your statements and the screenshots are so confusing - atleast to me - it is necessary that you do the above and restate the problem.)

Greetings Geeks -

I am almost home getting my computer up and running again. The last step is to force Windows 10 to recognize my secondary SATA drive through Disk Manager. I spent a few minutes poking around disk manager and it seemed to me that disk manager wants to format when the disk is recognized. Is this the case? Can I add the drive without losing the information? The drive has data on it that I would like to keep. I am going to give it another try this evening.

The setup drive in question is a Western Digital 1TB hard. Thank you for any help.

yesterday i made short-circut with my washing machine, and fuse fall...
after that all returned to normal, just not my pc

in bios all looks fine... strange thing is that in sata configuration now all hdds and dvd are visable. even so i see 6 HDD (not 5) one is copy.
so it goes like this...

HDD 1 SEAGATE
HDD 2 WD1
HDD 3 WD2
HDD 4 E-SATA (DAS)
HDD 5 WD 3
HDD 6 WD1 (same code as HDD 2)

i tried to see can i locate "lost" drive in windows disk manager but no luck...
in your opinion what went wrong, and how to fix problem? (hope that hdd is not burned in short-circut )

I checked on MyComputer>Manage and I formatted disk as I read on other forums as a solution.
After formatting I didn't recognize any aprovements. As recommended I did a CHECKDISK, which I used TESTDISK.exe file from downloaded Zip File and here is what is says... Please check the attachment.

If you might help with any suggestions, PLEASE do.

The drive is still uder the test...it goes very slow...

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

Answer:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

I am a new player here, so excuse me if i make a mess of this. I have a Sony Vaiol laptop and am  running vista.  I haven't used it for a lot other than internet, so data etc.is limited and space is good.my problem started suddenly when i turned on pc and a black screen with the error message,"disk read error, press cntrl+alt+del to continuie."didnt do it! Wouldnt do anyuthing. Finally, I acquired legal sony recovery disks. And when the screen to choose operating system comes up, there is none so it says apply drivers and im lost, I have no familiarity with hard disk drivers so....but did bring up command prompt in recovery and through luck and lil else, i happened on chkdsk and found it to all check out but it does say NTFS not fat 32, but found no problems. Now Im dumb completely!!! Help if you can.

Answer:hard disk`??? wont reboot even with recovery disk yet all disk checks say fine.

Sony Vaiol laptop.Has problems of its own. It is not piratical to give you guidelines on this laptop. There have been many issues about how to repair and maintain it. The recovery discs should have everything you need. Here is a bit of advice, not really my own, try to sell the unit to somebody that thinks they know how to fix it. Then go buy a new or used laptop that will suit hour needs. The cost of ownership of any laptop is higher that many new users expect. Some more than others. This  may sound like a rant to put down Sony. It is not. Sony has made their own bed of nails. Look at this article from last year:Sony Vaio Laptop Recall: Everything You Need To KnowRead the article. You decide.

Hi Elnene,

I am actually having the same issue regarding a spare external drive and Windows 7. The drive works perfectly on XP and Wii but the second I plug it into my laptop (windows 7) **YOU NEED TO FORMAT......** This is not an option! I have searched the internet far and wide - there are a few fixes that have worked for some but unfortunately not me. I also noticed that NONE / NO ONE / NOT ONE Windows 7 'Help sites' that have Windows 7 'gurus' have bothered to EVER answer this rather common problem. There are threads older than 4 years that have never been answered and I see your thread is already 4 weeks old... Sad really.

In this time I hope you have come right!!!

Hi, Does the hard drive have any kind of encryption on it? If so you need to run it on the same platform OS or disable the encryption first before it can be seen on the other system. If there is no encryption try reading the drive on a system with the same file system i.i NTFS vs FAT. if it still does not read put it back in the system and try to boot up in safe mode and get the data off your profile.good luck,Fred

I needed help badly!

A computer here in the office suddenly cannot boot. Error shows that Boot disk failed. At first I thought the hard disk crashed. So I take out the hard disk and put it in my cpu as slave just to make sure the hard disk really crashed. But it works. The hard disk is fine.

So I take it back to its cpu but the error still shows. I take out the IDE Cable connected in the CD Rom but the problem still remains. It says there are no Primary Master and Slave. I check the CMOS but it was configured to automatically detect the hard disk.

What shall I do?

Answer:Hard disk not detected

It's the IDE Cable

Your right the culprit is the IDE Cable. I just bought a new one and it works. Thanks for the help!

Answer:Hard Disk not detected

It may have failed. Is this a new drive? - or a previously working drive from another computer? - or a drive that was working in this computer.Have you just fitted it? - have you made any changes at all with your drives? How have you set the jumpers on it? - what is the jumper on the Master drive set to? - is this a slave on the Primary channel to another hard drive - is it a Slave on the Secondary channel to an Optical drive?

Hi!
I'm using a system with specifications : 3GHZ Processor, 512MB DDR2 RAM, 120GB IDE Hard Disk, Asrock Motherboard, DVD Writer, Windows XP Professional. My Hard Disk is connected as Primary Master & DVD Writer as Secondary Master. My Problem is when I try to connect another 120GB IDE Hard Disk (without an OS) as Primary Slave the system hangs on boot screen and has to be restarted. Sometimes it boots but does not detect the 120GB Disk. The case is the same even if it is connected as Secondary slave.I have checked all jumper settings. I also tried connecting the disk to an external USB casing, the problem persists. If the same disk is connected as Primary Master (after installing Windows XP on it), it works fine. How do I solve this problem?? Please Help

Thanks

Hi,
I own a HP Pavilion dv1000, the problem is the hard disk is getting detected in the BIOS but at the boot menu screen fades blank and also the hard disk activity led is not glowing there after(the hard disk activity led flashes when only when power is turned on/off and not at any other instance.).

Its a SATA disc drive.
I bought a SATA BOX and tried connecting it to my other laptop but the drive is not getting detected , though the LED on the SATA BOX connected to hard disk is green (assuming green signifies working).

I also used USBDeview to see if it can detect the drive connected on the USB but it wasn't detected .

If it can be of any help here are few specifications:

Capacity : 80GB
SN : 5PK0TZGS
Model : ST98823AS
PN : 9W3183-021
FW : 3.05

Vol : +5v , 0.48 A

I have some very important data which wasn't backed up on it , any comments would be of immense help.

Answer:Hard disk not getting detected

Determine the brand name of the drive. Download the drive manufacturer's testing utility, preferably a utility that runs from a bootable CD. Place the drive back into its original computer. Turn the computer on and place the bootable test CD into the computer's CD drive and restart the computer again. Run the tests and let us know your result.

Hi,

I have a 250GB Toshiba laptop hard disk that is not being detected by anything. Toshiba shipped my laptop with two partitions; the first is 1.5GB primary partition, and the other is just a logical one. I inadvertently deleted (not formatted, deleted!) the primary partition while trying to install Windows 7, and now whenever the computer starts up, the hard disk's light is constantly on, but nothing else happens on screen (just blank). Setup for Windows 98SE, 2000, XP and 7 can't see it. Also, I tried HDD Regenerator, but nothing happens at startup even though the light is constantly on.

If I try to simply connect that drive (as an external USB one), then Windows 7 detects that something is connected, but hangs up on trying to install its drivers.

I know that I messed up the hard drive because of a stupid mistake, but is there anyway to retrieve the info from the logical partition? Is there anything that can recreate a primary partition?

Thanks.

How to ask questions:

Write in clear, grammatical, correctly-spelled language

We've found by experience that people who are careless and sloppy writers are usually also careless and sloppy at thinking and coding (often enough to bet on, anyway). Answering questions for careless and sloppy thinkers is not rewarding; we'd rather spend our time elsewhere.

So expressing your question clearly and well is important. If you can't be bothered to do that, we can't be bothered to pay attention. Spend the extra effort to polish your language. It doesn't have to be stiff or formal — in fact, hacker culture values informal, slangy and humorous language used with precision. But it has to be precise; there has to be some indication that you're thinking and paying attention.

Hi! I am new to Techspot and this is my first post.
I have a PC which has stopped detecting the hard drive and will not even boot. The dard disk is Seagate ST340810A 40GB. I have tried swapping cables and power supplies but to no avail. Earlier it was occasionally giving similar problem but used to work fine when the cable connections were re made. I have data on the drive which needs to be recovered.
The local vendor tells me that a new 'logic card' will need to be put in as the old one has gone kaput. He also says that the data can be recovered but is charging a fortune, and that some of the data may be lost or corrupt. He is not ready to sell the 'logic card' to me.
Being not so knowledgable in this area, please advise how should I proceed to make the drive back into working status.
Rgds/AJ

Answer:Hard disk not being detected

You will not be able to recover ANY data if you have a hardware malfunction without replacing the faulty part. Even so, your data still may be non-recoverable. ALWAYS backup important data to more than one device.
You can try using an IDE to USB adapter, but if the controller board on the hard drive is toast, it's dead.

If BIOS sees both discs then in windows right click the start menu and select disk management - can you see both drives there?

I have a 500GB Hard Disk. When i formatted it once, I got a warning telling that do not install the OS in this drive or you might loose data. But I had to install it there. No problem occurred after that for a few days, but one day the computer just hanged at start up.

Problem:

First time when I power on the system and start the computer, the hard disk is read in the boot menu but it hangs at Starting Windows. Without switching off main supply, when I restart the computer, the hard disk is not read under the boot menu.

When I plug the same hard disk in a later version of mother board i.e in another computer, each time on Starting Windows I get a Blue Screen. The problem is corrupt OS according to the code that appeared on the Blue Screen.

How to retrieve the data from the hard disk?
Please HELP !

Answer:Hard Disk not detected

First, you cant install the problem hard drive in another computer and expect it to start Windows. The Windows installation is customized to the PC it was installed on.

You can, however, connect the hard drive as a second drive on another PC already running Windows (or other OS) and look at the files inside. If you can see the files you can copy them to a backup disk to recover them.

As for the original problem, is the problem hard disk recognized as a boot device in BIOS when you start the computer from the OFF condition?

Answer:Primary Master hard Disk Error - No hard drive detected

First pull ac power and then press power on button a few times. Then replace ac plug and see if it boots correctly. If not then use bios to see if there is a hard drive. Some have a sort of autodetect selection. If still fails then get the hard drive diagnostic for that brand. Almost every hard drive company offers great software that can run usually from a cd or dvd drive. You boot to the cd.Then maybe I'd go in the computer (after you remove ac and press power button a few times and use esd strap) to re-seat hard drive cables. Look for any wear or damage on the cables. Test the power supply maybe too. A Pit Bull is like a gun you can pet. And there is no safety on it.

Hey there guys, about six months ago I started receiving an error every few days on my computer on boot, and it was something along the lines of: 'pxe-rom: Check cable connection!'. To fix it I just used my Windows 7 install CD and it was fine, until whenever it'd happen again. Now, just about three days ago an error popped up that said 'Windows has detected a hard disk problem'. The hard drive is a 640 GB Toshiba MK6465GSXN. Anyway, after getting that message I quickly backed up all of my important documents and stuff onto an external HDD. It was also very slow, slower than my computer had ever been. So, I decided to do a clean install since scans with Malwarebytes and AVG detected nothing. And then, once it finished, it popped up the error message again?! I have noticed that the slowness has gone, but I'm not installing any programs in case it does fail. I am wondering that maybe the 'check cable connection' error was telling me something, but I didn't think anything of it. So, does it sound like I need to get a new hard drive?
EDIT: I bought a new hard drive, fixed!

Answer:Windows has detected a hard disk problem. Hard drive failing?

In many cases, that is Windows way of saying your hard drive is in imminent danger of failing. Of course there could be other problems, but windows will usually detect it first. A tutorial that may help is simple to use, but may take a while. Disk Check I would also get the Manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic program to check the drive. You were wise to back up all of your personal information.

I was laying in bed and heard my computer restart for seemingly no reason. I get up to look at the screen and I get the error "3rd Slave Hard Disk Error" I try to continue but since Ubuntu is installed on the now faulty hard drive, it says error: no such device: - device name - Entering rescue mode - grub rescue>... which I've seen before, it's telling me that it can't find the Ubuntu installation. I have windows as my primary OS on the first hard drive (the one that's still detected) and manually choose windows before the computer starts. I went into BIOS to try and change the boot sequence, which has caused the grub rescue screen before, but the 2nd hard drive is no longer detected. How can I get passed the grub rescue screen? What could of possibly happened to my hard drive in such a seemingly random way? I have a 3rd unused hard drive, am I better off just installing windows on it and starting over? I don't want to lose everything on my 2nd hard drive though.

I tried starting it with the cords plugged into the primary hard drive into the 2nd faulty one, it's spinning but still not detecting it

Answer:no hard disk was detected on your computer?

Do you know if you have a SATA type hard drive? Had you used the "scan my system" at the home page here, we would have some specs on your computer. Either use that method, or supply specs for further help.

Answer:G580 No hard disk detected

Hello: Your drive may be corrupted, If this is the case you will need to re-install windows, To do this shut down your laptop press the onekey recovery button, You will see some options scroll to recovery & tap enter, The program will look for your boot partition (C), & check its status, If it is corrupted you will be prompted to format the drive prior to windows installation, Once formatted just follow the onscreen prompts to re-install. If however onekey recovery can`t see the drive it may damaged & need replacing. Good luck with that. Catt

Hi,

I've just got a new laptop for college and I'm trying to reinstall windows XP Professional onto it because it came with Windows Vista but I don't like Vista. Anyway, I've installed XP on other computers before and I've never had any problems until now. You see, when I put the boot disc into the laptop, everything is loaded and fine until I actually try to install the windows XP because then I receive an error message that says that the Hard Disk is not detected.

I know that the problem may be due to missing drivers for SATA or whatever, but I have no idea which drivers I need to put on a floppy disc so that I can load them during the XP installation. Can anyone help?

All of the drivers for the laptop are located here:
