Dell 8900 won't turn on, start button lights up for split second

Question: Dell 8900 won't turn on, start button lights up for split second

Hello and thank you very much --
Yesterday the cursor disappeared so I turned the pc off manually.  When I turned it back on after a few seconds all was OK.  Cursor disappeared again, so I tried the same thing, but the computer now won't turn back on at all.
The start button lights up amber then immediately goes out.  No sounds.  I have unplugged and plugged back in all the cords from wall, router, modem.  The lights on modem and router are all normal,  The laptop I am using as I type right now is hooked up to the same system, I'm not using the laptop wirelessly.  I have also unplugged the power and held down the start button for 10 seconds as was suggested on Dell's website.  But pc still won't respond.
The pc that won't turn on is a Dell 8900 which I bought 6 months ago and has worked perfectly up to now.  I use Windows10.
What should I do next?

Preferred Solution: Dell 8900 won't turn on, start button lights up for split second

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
In reference to the following posting, http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19676126:
I am not the individual who initiated this query but I did have the same issue with my Dell Inspiron 5547, where it wouldn't turn on after a power button shut down.
I followed Hema's instructions by removing the battery and charger and then holding down the power button for a few seconds, and then putting back the parts. It seemed to have done the trick... At least for now. Is this just a temporary fix?
While doing a Google search for a solution I seem to have encountered a number of people who experienced the same issue. Can you also explain why this happens with this particular Dell laptop? Is it a model flaw?
Thank you

Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum and have had the below issue for about a week now.
I've been looking for solutions in this forum and online but nothing worked or matched the symptoms.
Symptoms are :
The computer when powered up does not start,
Screen remains black,
Touch sounds buttons mute and raise volume blink in unison,
Lower sound button remain on,
This is for a Dell Studio 1535 I have had for 7 years. Running windows 8 for 4/5 months now.
I have tried : A solution by Krypebud posted here 6 years ago : which was to download the firmware ISO I and reboot the computer. This did not work.
I have also checked that the screen does not work on a second monitor : it does not.
Additionally I have tried the LCD BIST test which works fine, no distortions, colours all seem fine.

Would anyone know needs to be done here ? (apart from buying a new laptop)
Please be simple in your explanations I have very little knowledge of computers, assume I have no idea about anything.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Greg

Some time ago, the PC gave the same problem. It wouldn't turn on. When I pressed the button, it turned on but showed nothing. I had replaced the CPU and that seemed to work. I didn't use the PC that much, rarely you know. But now, after some time, it gives the same problem.
It turns on, the front light is on, it makes the normal noise the pc makes when it's turned on , but if I try to shut it down by holding the power button it just doesn't work.
So again, I tried replacing the CPU and it worked again. I kept it all day working, just to be sure, and sometimes I would restart it and it would work again. No problems at all.
So I turned it off at night, and next morning it just would make the same problem. So I tried replacing the PSU. And it worked again.
Now while I had the PC with the new PSU, I tried to insert the old CPU, and again, it would turn on.
So I bought a new PSU and installed it. The same thing, tried restarting too, and it would work. But this morning the same problem happened.

I also tried another CPU today and yet no signs of working.
I don't know now what to think.

Answer:PC turns on lights but shows nothing -- won't turn off with power button

The motherboard is most likely bad now... CPU's rarely fail. I wonder why you have had to change so many

I saw that there were others with this issue. I already tried things like resetting the ram, taking out my battery. Even with my laptop plugged in, not lights are showing up and the power button isnt starting anything. I tried to listen and hear if anything was happening, but no luck. I just to get help if there is anything I can do to trouble shoot or just figure out what the issue is so I can get it fixed . I was running Windows 10 on there.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R won't turn on ! No lights will turn on .

Hi PARTH511722,
What is the exact system model?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible? Could you try powering on with another battery?
Remove the memory and disconnect the HDD and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
If the adapter led is stable when connected to the system and there are no signs of power, then the motherboard is suspected faulty.

Worked fine until today, 1/1/2016 -- Happy New Year, NOT!
Changed power cable, use a different outlet (other items like LAN router and network printer power just fine). Computer will still not start.
When I plug power into computer power light comes on bright then goes out (this seemed normal before). Then if I push the power button computer does not start.
I do appear to get a orange light sequence of 2-1 after trying to turn it on -- and that continues. May be some sort of POST signal?
I can return the computer (not my first choice) after our upcoming trip. But I'd prefer to get it up and running today. Have some work to do.

Answer:Dell XPS-8900 Will Not Start

More info. I had four external USB3 drives attached, two powered and two are Seagate Wireless drives -- one of which is recharged via its USB port.
Unplugging only that second Seagate drive lets the machine start up. So the issue may be too much of a current drain on the USB board.
Once booted, the system seems to run fine with that Seagate Wireless drive attached, and it will Restart with it attached -- just not boot from a Shut Down condition.
Not sure I really understand this, but I can live with it.
If someone seems something more insidious in this behavior, please advise; purchased the XPS-8900 at COSTCO and still have about 55 days to return it if it is defective!

any help appreciated:confused

Answer:blinking yellow lights-dell won't turn on

Hi,

Dell indicates that combination of lights is a memory problem.

Reseat the memory modules. If the problem persists, see "Contacting Dell" in the Solutions Guide for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.Click to expand...

Try reseating the RAM modules. If that doesn't work; if you have more than one module try using just one at a time to see if you can isolate the bad module.

So i have a dell inspiron 15 3521, about a year ago, it started turning on, but wouldn't charge. Then, the battery completely died and it wouldn't turn on. Also, when i plugged the charger in, the light on the charger unit turned on then off. I then proceeded to buy a new battery and charging unit. It turned on perfectly and worked well, but the battery wouldnt charge, and when the battery's charge was all out, it would start up, show the windows loading screen for 30-60 seconds and then mysteriously power off. (Same result with battery+charger in) When i tried turning it on with just the charger in, the front indicator lights would turn on for a few seconds, then turn back off. I tried getting rid of the static built up by pressing the power button down for 30 seconds, but no progress. I know that the outlet is working perfectly, the battery works well, just doesnt have a charge, and has been cleaned. I think the problem is either with the laptop not accepting power (for lack of better words) or the charger not producing enough power. All help is appreciated, and needed... Thank you! :)

I recently changed the screens on my laptop without difficulty. The next day i went to classes and brought my laptop since it was now fixed. When i went to turn it on it was very dark and i couldn't adjust the brightness. I couldn't get pass the log on screen so i held down the power button but it would not turn off so i took out the battery. I put the battery back in and left the laptop alone till i got home. I thought that the problem with the screen was a wire came loose or something of that nature so i took apart the screen and made sure everything was plugged in. I put it back together and put the battery back in and went to turn it on to see if the screen problem was resolved and it wouldn't boot or anything. I don't get any beeps, fans, or lights that turn on. HELP!?!?!?!

Answer:Dell Inspiron n5010 wont turn on, no beeps , no lights, nothing.

Hi Jamien606,
Do you see light on the adapter? You may drain the flea power and see if that makes a difference:

Disconnect all the external peripherals.
Unplug AC Adapter and also take off the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds.
Connect the AC Adapter back and check if the system is working fine.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Answer:DELL XPS 8900 Win 7 Pro - RANDOM SEEK Test - Module Failed to Start

Hi Yannis,
Thanks for posting.
What the PC-Doctor team has found here is that on a system with this many drives, when the tests are trying to load at the same time that we are loading CPU and memory stress testing, the load prevents the modules from getting loaded on all drives before hitting timeouts.
Hope this helps.

This is happening now when I try turning my pc on, I've got 4 hard drives in it, the motherboard flashes lights and the rear fan starts for a second, the hard drives buz then nothing, it repeats after a few seconds. Normally the hard drives buz once when starting then the pc starts. It's like it wants to start but something is stopping it. It must be something to do with on of them.

What can I do about this? Thanks.

I am having a boot issue with my Dell i7559 laptop. I was using it normally this morning and suddenly get an IRQL type error. The computer resets itself and is doing some kind of diagnostic test and it freezes in the middle of that. So I reboot the computer and it won't boot up after that.
The current situation is that I can power it on. The power light will turn on, and the keyboard lights will turn on, but nothing else happens. I don't hear the fan at all (usually it turns on when I boot up the computer) and the screen is completely blank. The screen is working though because when I hit D+power on, I get the flashing lights. When I plug the computer into an external monitor, there is no response. But other than the power light and keyboard light being on, there is no response whatsoever from the computer. I think this is considered a No-post error but I couldn't find any more info to diagnose the issue (there is a tech support page on dell.com that lets you diagnose no-post errors via the LCD lights on the laptop but i7559 isn't listed on that page).
This is similar to an issue I had a few months ago. I was getting lots of weird blue screen of death errors, and the computer wouldn't boot past the bios and eventually got bricked. That time the solution was that I opened it up, cleaned out the dust, swapped the RAM into the other slot, and then when I rebooted it, it worked fine and has worked fine until this issue today. I tried doing that again but it di... Read more

My computer was working fine until the other day when the computer power button flashes and then the number 1 and 3 lights flash thereafter simultaneously. Although I've researched the diagnostic code error message on the Dell support documentation, I cannot determine what may be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may the problem be and how to correct it?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

This morning I turned on my computer and it is making a loud noise but it will not start. The diagnostic lights on the front say 1 3 4. This happened a couple of times before, and I would shut it off, wait a few minutes and turn it back on and everything would work fine. However, this time it did not start at all. I am thinking it might be the processor, but I am not sure? If it is, how would I know what kind of processor it needs? Dell will not tell me unless they troubleshoot and determine what the problem is and then they would send their technician out to fix it (too costly). Help!!

I have Dell laptop inspiron 15z. From some time whenever I start the laptop it gives 8 beeps and screen is split into 4 parts. I did a factory reset and also checked the hardware by opening the laptop.
I also did the LCD test with 'D' button pushing.
I also performed epsa it gave me 2 errors.
Error code 2000 0415 and 2000 0321.
for error 1 got msg Cables. check the LCD Cable.
for error 2 got msg LCDFDID check- FDID EEPROM.
What should I do to troubleshoot or repair the laptop I bought it very costly and its used less than 3 years.
Any help will be appreciated.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15Z 8 beeps during start and screen split into 4 parts

Hi GEEKPS,
The 8 beeps is a LCD failure error indicator. And hence the epsa errors relating to the LCD cable.
Is this a touch / non touch screen?
Update the BIOS if possible - http://dell.to/2fUAg8C- restart the system and check.
If the issue is not resolved, for touchscreen - you would need to replace the entire LCD assembly.
For non touch, download the service manual from the above link - reseat the LCD cable and check. If the issue is not resolved, the replace the LCD cable - this is the part you would need - http://bit.ly/2eg0YZ3
If the issue persists, then replace the LCD accordingly.
Presuming there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

Hello -
I hope Bev is still around as she has been so helpful to me in the past.  I have and 8400 that shut off while I was working.  I thought the power to the house went out...but it was just my computer.  Blinking amber light on the power button, no diagnostic lights in back.  Tried to start up, nothing.  Read posts here about it and tried removing CMOS for 10 minutes, removing PCI cards and disconnecting all power and connections from drives to MB (no change...still blinking light, nothing else), then did the jumping test from green to black (yes, I probably should have done that first...) and got nothing on that.  No fan, nothing.
Can I definitely say it is the PSU?  If so, is the PSU from a 2400 interchangeable with this one?  If it isn't, are there particular brands I should look for or stay away from when purchasing a new PSU?

Thanks so much!

Answer:Dell 8400 blinking amber light won't start, no diagnostic lights

Blinking Amber means Bad Power Supply.
This particular model needs tin snips to cut a hole in the back for a regular power supply.  If you buy the startech model it will fit without requiring case modification.
Or you can buy one from an OEM vendor.

Hi,

My Dell Studio has just crashed and wont restart. The mute and volume up buttons are flashing and the volume down button is solidly lit. I could not find the diagnostic code when searching the internet. I could find pretty much every other diagnostic code apart from this one.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Andy

Answer:Dell Studio 1535 wont start. Blinking mute and volume up button, solid volume down button.

Hi Andy,
Welcome to Dell community!
As you have correctly pointed out, the diagnostic code that you have mentioned is not among the codes available to isolate the failure for a Studio 1535 laptop. The closest code is: blinking Mute LED and Volume up LED, and an off Volume down LED which is for USB controller initialization failure. Disconnect any external devices connected and try powering on the computer.
Reseating the memory modules too can help us. Please refer the following link for the Studio 1535 service manual for instructions: http://bit.ly/10PrLgH
If issue persists, the laptop’s motherboard has to be replaced. Refer the following link to check the computer’s warranty status: http://dell.to/10pMa86
If the computer has active warranty, please send me the service tag and registered owner’s name on the computer in a Private Message. To send me a Private Message, click my User name, and then click Start Conversation.
If the warranty on the computer has expired, you may contact our expired warranty services to purchase/replace the compatible parts. Please refer the following link that has contact details for our Expired Warranty Services: http://dell.to/14FoBtb

I recently had my Dell Inspiron 6000 reformatted by a friend of mine. Upon returning it to me, I found that the only way that I could turn my laptop was to push the play/pause button on my media strip located below mouse pad. This was an accidental finding and my friend has no idea why. A couple items of notice also...

1) Upon starting my computer out of hibernation there is a screen that displays for a few seconds that states Dell Media Direct. This has never shown up before.

2) My icon lights (the icons for caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock) do not work like they used to.

Everything else seems to be working just fine. I still have to install some other programs that I had on before, but nothing out of the ordinary I think. My thoughts are that he may have installed a Windows media type O/S or that maybe perhaps there is a specific driver for the power button/icon strip to function. Any thoughts?

So I woke my laptop up after sleep by opening it, but I forgot it was sleeping so I accidentally pushed the power button. Then it turned of. After that I couldn't turn it back on. I tried plugging in the cable, but only the led is on (indicating that it is charging). I would remove the battery, but this model has it built in, so in order to remove it I would have to open the screws - I still have waranty for at least 5 months - won't opening it void the waranty? How do I fix this?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5547 won't turn on after power button shut down

Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Removing the panel to take out the battery will not void the warranty as long as you don''t damage any parts inside :).
Remove the battery and charger and hold down the power button for 10 secs then put back the parts and let us know if it worked.
Simultaneously you can remove the memory modules as observe for any change.
Await your response.

I rebuilt a computer using old parts. it was powering up ok and functioning fine. After powering down, it would not turn on again. I found that the LED on the wireless card which goes on when power supply switch is turned on, was not glowing.
I suspected the PS and i claimed that on warranty and got a new one.
once this was installed, the computer worked ok.
Again the same thing has repeated. there is on light on the wireless card, and no response to the power on button.. I jumpered tje PS and it works.
Do I have a dead MB??
Please help guys.

Answer:Computer does not turn on when pressing the start button

could be an issue with the motherboard. It might not be sending the power on signal to the PSU.

but first things first. What are the specs of the PC? and what is the wattage and brand of the PSU?

Hi guys,
So just the last day my Dell Inspiron 7559 has been having some issues. I've had it for a year now it was brand new and when it is shut down when you try to turn it back on again, the keyboard and power light turn on but nothing shows up on the screen. I don't know if it's booting or anything. I hold down the power button for a while and it turns off and then back on, eventually after like 15 tries of this and 10 mins it sometimes turns on.
I've updated all my drivers and everything per Dell Support site and ran a full systems check and was clear.
I reset the laptop while also keeping my files.
Reinstalled new Antivirus and the like programs to see if it could possibly be that.
Specs:
Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0 Build 16299)
Intel Core i5-6300HQ CPU @ 2.30GHz (4 CPUs)
8192MB RAM
DirectX 12
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960M
Integrated RAMDAC
Drivers: nvldumdx.dll,nvldumdx.dll,nvldumdx.dll,nvldumdx.dll Version: 22.21.13.8205
Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

I have a new Dell XPS 8900 connected to a Dell U2413 monitor using the HDMI to mini-HDMI cable.  When I switch off the monitor (to save the screen and energy), the PC jumps into an unrecoverable power saving mode, shutting down all open applications in doing so.  The mouse and keyboard lock up.  The only way to restart the PC is to press the power button for several seconds (hard reboot).   This began happening recently.  What can be done to fix?

Hello,

I have a new Dell 8900 series desktop. (64 bit)

Apparently has Realtek integrated audio on the Motherboard.

The audio works fine, but the program that gives the user, me, options for adjusting
the audio is really poor.

Something called Maxx Audio Pro. No idea if it is a Dell implementation, or some third party software.

I wrote Realtek, but haven't received any answer.

Anyone know if they, Realtek, or anyone else offers software that would
allow more, and easier, adjustments for the audio (speakers, headphones, equalizer, etc.) ?

Was hoping that Realtek had a downloadble package that I could use instead
of what Dell provides.

Thanks,
Bob

You should find updates in Dell site, is the audio management SW they use
Edit: it seems they not use it anymore, here is the link for Dell 8900 XPS, there is a recent driver for the audio controller:

Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

Answer:Dell 8900, Gaming Computer, Dell Alienware Aurora

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

Right out of the box plugged it in and power light began to blink orange work do anything else.
Any help with this?

Answer:Xps 8900 power button blinking orange

Try this:

Power off and remove power cable from rear of PC, not just from the wall
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reconnect power cable to rear of PC
See if it boots now with only mouse, monitor and keyboard connected

If that doesn't help and you purchased it directly from Dell, contact Dell Support right away. Within the first 30 days from invoice date (not delivery date) you can send it back. Then order another one from their sales site.
If you purchased it from a "Big Box" store, take it back to the store and exchange it for another system.

You can try a new  RAM stick. What you describe can be: Anything overloads the PSU, or a failing PSU Bad memory in the low region. BIOS  can't run without it. Bad CPU, or heat sink not in placeDisconnect the HDD and the DVD drive. (Power off, of course.)Power on. Does it  show the  BIOS?

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

Ok, I have tried a few things and just can't get it to work. About a month ago, I subscribed to AOL's computer checkup (have since deleted it) and my laptop has not worked right since. Once I log onto the computer, if I try to go to the start button or any items on the task bar, I receive a critical error, and it logs me out and makes me sign in again. I have googled the problem and I have found that if I hit ctl, alt, del and then go to task managger and restart windows explorer, the problem goes away until the next time I log back in.
Any suggestions on how to fix this ?

Question: Dell XPS 8900 DVI

Hi, this should be a relatively easy question to answer for those in the know.  If I order up a new 8900 desktop with the GTX 970 card, will it have a DVI port on that card?  I have a monitor I am fond of and want to continue to use, but it only has DVI.

Answer:Dell XPS 8900 DVI

Typical GTX 960/970/980 has 1 DVI  , 3 Display Port and , 1 HDMI.
Cant imagine ANY card of this series with NO DVI.

Question: Dell XPS 8900

1. When I switch the power on from the mains to the PC it lights up the on/off button, the fan and pc starts to power up then after about a second the whole machine then just closes down. I have to wait for this process before I can then press the on button to then start up the pc. Is this normal?

2. My PC can take 2-5 minutes starting up. The performance of the PC isn't that good either. For a high spec PC this is pretty poor. Again is this normal?

3. From Windows when I select sleep I can wake the pc back up by moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard. I have to press and hold the on/off button on the pc to get back to the desktop.

Answer:Dell XPS 8900

When you switch power on at the mains, the PC powers up to see what it's supposed to do after recovering from a "power failure". If BIOS is set to "Do nothing", the PC shuts off again. BIOS can be set to "Reboot automatically".  So In your case, this might be a convenient setting and you won't have to press the power button to boot.
Two-five min seems long. Do you have some utility set to run at boot, eg anti-viral scan? How long does it take to boot if you disconnect all peripherals, including network cable (or WiFi), leaving only mouse, monitor and keyboard connected? And how much junk is loading at boot?
Look in BIOS setup to see if there's option for mouse (USB) to wake the system and enable it.

  - Open Device Manager and expand list under USB. Double-click each USB root hub and click    Power Management tab. Uncheck box "Allow PC to turn off...". Repeat for all USB root hubs.  -  Now expand list under Human Interface Devices and uncheck same box for any HID that has    a Power Management tab.  - Go to Windows Power options screen. Identify the currently used Power plan and click link to    change its settings. On next screen, click link for Advanced Options. And on that screen, find    USB Selective Suspend in list at left and disable it.    - R... Read more

Apologies if my questions are redundant to other posts in the forum, BUT, I couldn't find ones that covered my questions specifically.
I'm hoping to add a OCZ Trion 150 960GB 2.5" 7mm SATA III Internal Solid State Drive TRN150-25SA3-960G to the Dell XPS 8900 I just purchased. Currently it has a 1TB HDD but no second drive.
My questions:

Is the SSD I intend to purchase compatible with this desktop?
If not, why (ie, what should I look for in an alternate)? And what is a good alternative to the SSD I'm proposing.
Does the XPS 8900 come with spare power and SATA for a second drive?
Do I  need a 3.5" mounting adapter?

Thanks in advance. Again, apologies for the simplistic questions, but I'd appreciate a response.

I recently purchased the following Dell 8900
Dell XPS x8900-3756BLK Desktop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB HDD + 32 GB SSD) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 with 4GB DDR3

I would like to replace the graphics card (I flight sim a lot) with a GTX 960 4GB DDR5 card, either myself or have a computer repair place do it.
Which specific cards would be easiest to install in my machine - if I search for GTX 960, I see all kinds of different length cards, 1 and 2 fans, etc.
I'd like to purchase the following card, if it will be easily installed...
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 4GB GDDR5 PCiE Graphics Cards GV-N960OC-4GD
Would a new graphics card be difficult to install myself?   What is involved?
Thank you,

Answer:Which GTX 960 Can I use to upgrade my Dell XPS 8900

The XPS 8900 and 8700 share the same case so if you look in this thread you'll see the cards that fit and the cards that needed some case cutting.
en.community.dell.com/.../19611037
I can personally vouch for the the MSI GTX 970 gaming 4GB fits so check the size (length and height) and if less it should fit without issue.
If you can wait a few weeks or maybe a month, the GTX 1080 looks to be an amazing card for the price and power draw. It is going to be slightly more expensive, however much more capable.
The install is easy. search for youtube videos and you should find one.
edit: and you can sell your GTX 745 on ebay and recoup some of the cost.

I bought a lightly used Dell XPS 8900 computer. The original owner did not reset the computer. It is erratic. I tried to create a system disk but got an error message. Apparently that's not an option.  I don't know if this system is encrypted or what the problem is. Hey guys,
My Dell xps 8900 have 8Gb ram (4Gb x2) DDR4 2133 UDIMM. Currently it has 2 empty slots. I just bought an 8Gb (8Gb x1) ram DDR4 -2133 UDIMM Crucial stick. I make sure it has the same CL, voltage, etc. I run Crucial scan and it says this stick is compatible with the Dell 8900. My question is can I just add this single stick to the system to make it a total 16Gb, if so which slot do I put it in? so it will end up with 4x2 sticks and 8x1 stick.  I've read somewhere saying the Dell xps 8700 wouldn't boot if the dual slots are not filled up. Mine is a Dell xps 8900, however.

Answer:Dell xps 8900 adding more ram

Ummm....you have a problem...
The XPS 8900 has 4 RAM slots. So in order to install one new 8GB module, you'd have to uninstall one of the existing 2GB modules.
Even if you do that, the XPS 8900 doesn't support 14 GB of RAM (3x2GB + 1x8GB =14GB). The supported configs are:  8 GB, 16 GB, 24 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB.
And it's always best to install RAM in matched pairs. So you probably need to remove all four 2GB modules and install 2x8 GB to get 16GB. Or, if crucial will take the 8 GB back, you may be able to exchange it for 4x4GB to get 16 GB, assuming that works out cheaper.
EDIT: If you might ever want to go above 16 GB, it might be prudent to use 2x8 GB now which will leave you with 2 empty slots in which you could install 2x4GB (for total of 24 GB), or 2x8GB (for total of 32 GB).

I am in search of figuring out what to do.  I have had this XPS 8900 for about 2 years.  1st year ran fine. 2nd year I was doing a recovery and our power flickered and nothing is on this desktop.  will power on but nothing.  How do I get recovery disks to put back in what it came with?    Thank you  Chris

Answer:Dell 8900 Desk Top XPS

Recovery disks will not do any good if the computer won't boot. You need to find and replace the damaged hardware if any. Try turning it on and immediately keep tapping F12 without waiting for any screen to see if you can get into the boot menu to run hardware diagnostics and include a custom test of the hard drive. Try booting to your repair disk.
Report the status of all the lights and explain what you mean by power on but nothing-- nothing on the screen or nothing on the drive or no sounds or fans, etc.

Hi I was wondering if I can purchase and use a MSI R9 380 GAMING 4G for my new Dell XpS 8900 computer? I am concerned about the stock psu not being enough power for this card. I belive the stock psu is 460w but this card has a System Requirements Power Consumption of 150W.
And this is the card I would like to use:

Answer:R9 380 GAMING 4G in a Dell XPS 8900 HELP!

The stock 460w is designed for 150w of video power. That card uses 225w or more.  8 Pin = 150w  + 75w from the X16 slot = 225w if it uses a 6 pin and An 8 pin this is 300w
http://support.amd.com/en-us/recommended/power-supplies/detail?item=AX650M

AMD says that  6950 cards can be used with an AX650M
I have used the Corsair CS750M in several Dell models without issue.

Okay, so I have an XPS 8900, I have 32gb ram for it. I have tested all RAM and they work. Now my problem is I can only get it to boot with 16gb ram set next to each other, as soon as I try to put it in dual RAID it doesn't load. I tested each slot with one 8gb ram and they all work. What is causing this thing to not boot with all 32gb ram  or 16gb ram in dual raid? Yes all the RAM is the same.

I purchased a new Dell XPS 8900 desktop, 64-bit operating system with Windows 10 Home about a month ago. The computer has never made a sound, whether it's Windows system sounds or sounds associated with programs. No sounds come from either the third-party speakers or the headphones, which work with other computers. So far I've tried the following:
Installed the newest version of the RealTek High Definition Audio driver from Dell website (it's green-checked on Control Panel)
Did speaker setup with Dell Audio Manager
Performed speaker setup and testing through Control Panel > Sound (testing produced no sound)
Inspected cable connections multiple times
Performed audio diagnostics through Dell Support website (the computer failed the first test, the second wouldn't continue because of a specious time zone issue, which didn't exist)
The speakers are plugged into the green jack on the back panel, and the headphones are plugged into front headphone jack. One thing I did do was to edit the registry to install the Windows sound mixer, which was not present in Windows 10. I did add a video card and another internal 3TB WD hard drive to the computer, but none of those actions has affected my old computer.
I've tried about everything I know so far. I believe this is likely some kind of software glitch or conflict, but I can't get the computer to make a sound. Control panel tells me that everything is working normally. Does any... Read more

Hello, The button lights on my Y560 are pretty slick looking, but they can get distracting at night time if you are trying to watch a movie or something. Is there a way to disable all the lights? I'm tempted to stick a piece of electrical tape over the ideapad logo in the bottom corner.  Thanks!

Answer:Disable button lights?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can shut off that Ideapad light in the corner inside the BIOS!

As for the buttons, they are instant-on, so tape might unfortunately be the solution for that one

I recently purchased an XPS 8900 with Win 10 Home installed. I want to run the OS & apps off an SSD, but the methods to get that to happen have not worked so far, namely cloning the HD to the SSD. Pretty much everything I've seen on the forums here and on the internet don't seem to take into consideration UEFI, which has proven be an enormous PITA in this process, as i have to keep switching between UEFI and Legacy modes to get the system to (try to) boot off the SSD.
The install is fresh - i.e. no user data yet, so I'm not worried about losing that data. The recovery partitions are intact. I created a recovery USB drive from within Windows 10. Any guidance on this would be welcome. Thanks!

I have a XPS 8900 with the Intel i7-6700.  Additionally, there is an orphan Intel i7-5930k in my spares.  I'd like to marry the two. While the i7-6700 is more than enough cpu for my needs; I'm one of those guys who like to customize OEM computers just for the experience. I'm almost certain the cpu is a plug in but the bios has me worried.  Any ideas? Suggestions(other than don't do it) would be welcome.

Answer:Dell XPS 8900 cpu upgrade to a i7-5930

The 8900 supports Skylake (6th generation) CPUs only -- a fifth generation is not going to work on this model.

Hi Everyone, I bought a new computer the Dell xps 8900 and I received it and set it up March 3. I had some issues with it and had a tech come over and work on it. I started having problems with the mouse not waking up. I would have to un plug it from the back of the tower. Dell replaced that computer and I just got another one lase Wednesday and set it up on Friday. I did add a printer and Acrobat Reader and I noticed that the computer came not to go in to sleep mode. I changed the settings and it seemed to be working and now is doing the same thing. It went to sleep and I tried restarting it. That did not work and I used the arrow keys to shut it down and then restarted it and the mouse worked. Is this a windows problem or a computer problem? does any one know or have this problem it's windows 10.

Will it run?
I know someone on here managed to get the 1070 to run perfectly on their stock XPS 8900 with 460W PSU

Has anyone tried it? Let me know, thanks!

Hi,
Just purchased a Dell XPS 8900 windows 10 64 bit with 802.11ac + bluetooth 4.0. Every time I run bittorrent I am getting the bcmwl63a.sys and BSOD. I have read to uninstall drivers and install older version. I am not very technical. If someone could please let me know where to find the drivers and how to uninstall current drivers? Or if you can point me in the direction with additional info that would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Good Morning,
I have been reading about installing a 1tb SSD drive in my unit and keeping the 2tb as drive D/E. I would clone my existing drive to the SSD using EaseUS, remove all the data which would remain on the original drive. Has anyone been through this scenario and could you send me the correct procedure.
Thanks,
Bob

Recently I moved my XPS 8900's internals to a bigger case. When powering on, it appears to all work but when it gets to the dell screen, it goes black. I can press f2 or f12 for the setup menus but it never gets there. It appears to be a POST problem, with blinking power button and keyboard capslock and scroll lock LEDs. It blinks in a pattern of 3-7-1-6. I cannot seem to get it to boot. Anyone have a clue what the problem might be?
Thanks,
Colin

Does anyone know if the new GTX 1080 card will have any issues with a Dell XPS 8900 Desktop?  Since the power requirements are lower the PSU should support it but I would like to verify before making an additional purchase.
--Rocco--

Answer:Dell XPS 8900 Desktop and GTX 1080

Nvidia is recommending a 500w power supply. The GTX 1070/1080 will not be validated by Dell on any systems shipping with the 460w power supply. I am scanning the Desktop Video board waiting for users to buy and test the video cards on our 460w systems.

The lights on modem and router are all normal,  The laptop I am using as I type right now is hooked up to the exact same system, I'm not using the laptop wirelessly.  I have also unplugged the power and held down the start button for 10 seconds as was suggested on Dell's website.  But pc still won't respond.  If I unplug and replug  the whole thing from the wall or plug and replug the AC adapter, I see the Dell logo for a moment on the screen and then the message it is going to power saving mode, then black.
The pc that won't turn on is a Dell 8900 which I bought 6 months ago and has worked perfectly up to now.  I use Windows10.
What should I do next?

Answer:Dell 8900 stopped working

Contact Dell Tech Support for warranty support.
Might be power supply or video card.  If you use a surge protector or power strip, remove those and try connecting PC directly to the wall outlet.
And always mention version of Windows in your posts

I turn on my pc by the key "power on" as usual, and everything is working normally.
I do not understand why when I give the current through the power strip, the computer will automatically start for only two seconds.
So I tried to reset the bios (CMOS), but has not changed anything.

I recently (2 days ago) had this weird problem.

It's a sort of a "syndrome" with many problems, the most evident one is the disappearance of the "Turn off" button from the start menu; but with it some other problems as follows:

- cant open task manager, i have an error message saying:"task manager has been disabled by ur administrator" although i am an administrator.

- no "run" button in the start menu.

- some sys tray applications stopped being started up with the windows.

And i havent discovered more things,,, yet...

Also, i have recently uninstalled download accelerator plus, and downloaded internet download manager, and i am almost pretty sure this is the problem as it is happened exactly with these programs added and removed.

Please if u have any idea what is going on, enlighten me...

Answer:Solved: "Turn off" button in the start menu disappeared!

Hello Forum-Friends and greetings from cologne/germany,

I hope I can describe my problem good enough to find help although my bad english ;-)

Yesterday I recognised a tore (in german it is called "Riss") in the lid (in german we say "Deckel") of my M60-139 notebook.
This tore grows from the opening-button ca. 3cm to the middle of the lid. If needed I can send you a picture ...

So my question is:
How can I open the LCD and the lid to glue the tore from inside with a very strong 2-component-epoxy to prevent the tore growing ?

Regards
Friedel

Any ideas or pictured disassembling manuals to: [email protected]

Answer:Satellite M60-139: Split from button to the middle of the lid

Dear Friedel,
I have exactly the same problem with my M60 -139. I have however no idea, where the tear suddently comes from.
Simply by closing the cover!? I believe the cover is too weak at the closing mechanism and the material will malfunction much too fast (1 1/2 year). Did you already place a support incident at Toshiba?

Frank

One of our Revolve 810 G1 systems will not boot. The light next to where the power cord plugs into the back of the unit flashes white and amber, and the light on the power button [which is a slider switch on the side] stays solid white as soon as the unit is plugged in, and the lights won't turn off until you unplug the power source. Otherwise, nothing will appear on the display and nothing happens. By way of troubleshooting, I have tried using it both with and without a battery, I have tried using an external monitor, holding the Windows button + B while powering on and also reseated the memory. Nothing worked. The unit was recently upgraded to Windows 10, but this definitely seems like a hardware issue. I'm guessing motherboard. Any other ideas? It is not under warranty.

The pc is a laptop dell inspiron 17r n7110 is not working..
History : I have an other post about the new ssd that will not boot. I decided to take out the ssd and put my old drive back. After reinstalling the hd and reassembling the laptop nothing comes on except the light on the on off button and some clicking noises from the speaker and no screen(black, no video). This laptop is a pain in the donkey for changing the hd's , you have to remove the keyboard, remove the cd drive, remove the palm rest and finally there it is the HD. In process of doing all of this you have to remove all 14 screws. the process of removal there are 4 small connectors so I dissemble the LT again and made sure of connections were ok and still nothing.
So now my main pc is down.(black hawk down!!!!)

so later in the day I was sitting in chair and thinking about it what was going on and prior trying to get the ssd working I was messing with the bios trying get the correct setup for booting, on the last settup I clicked on boot on hd and exited. still no boot on the ssd, so there may be a problem with bios???

So now I need help to get my LT back and running...remember my technical abilty is medium

when I tried to turn my my packard tower on it lights up when on is pressed but goes out again immediately without anything further happening

Answer:the push button lights but goes out again when released

There are numerous possible causes for your situation and it is a process of elimination to work out which. Q? Have you ever opened a computer case? Do you know the basics of computer hardware configuration? Is your machine still covered by warranty?Open the case. With power disconnected, remove and re-seat all power & data cables. Simply unplug and re plug them from motherboard/drives etc one at a time to make sure each is fully seated. This process can also clean any slight corrosion from contacts. Clean out accumulated dust using canned air. Now connect power and try to start up. Any sign of movement from fans?Common cause of this problem is powersupply failure. Do you have access to a spare compatible powersupply of equal or greater capacity? PSUs can suffer partial failure. Motherboard LEDs can still be lit while other parts of PSU have failed. Without a known good powersupply you cannot test the other components to see which if any other things have failed. Your problem may be as simple as a failed CPU fan or a faulty drive up to a failed CPU or motherboard.Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

I am planning on adding an SSD and doing a clean install of Win 10 on my new XPS 8900. I've spent a lot of time researching this and have notes and tutorials to follow that I feel comfortable with. The one area that I have not found good answers and only general advice is on reinstalling the drivers. The advice has been to go to the Dell download center and get them there.
To make sure I end up with the correct drivers on the SSD, I first took a look at what I currently have in the Device Manager and compared them to the list of drivers on the Dell driver page specific to my computer tag #. That has been an exercise in frustration. I have lots of questions. Please be patient. Hopefully this will help others also.
Let's start with the video drivers. Device Manager vs Dell list:

I have the GTX 745 and the Dell config on the Dell site lists it correctly. So why doesn't it show up on the list specific to my computer? Instead it lists an AMD. So, now I select to show all drivers for all XPS 8900s and it adds the following driver:

Even here, the GTX 745 isn't listed. Why? Can anyone from Dell explain why they don't have the driver listed for the most common graphics card installed on current XPS 8900s?
When I do a site search for a GTX 745, I find:

So, is this a newer driver compared to my installed?:

I have a Dell XPS 8900 running Windows 10 (64-bit). I recently reinstalled Windows due to a BSOD issue with several boot files (I would get a BSOD whenever I woke the computer from hibernation), which has now been fixed.
However, I'm now having a very perplexing problem with my audio:
1. I hear sounds from Google Chrome and the Windows system.
2. I don't hear sounds from any other programs (notably VLC Media Player and Windows Media Player, even games). Both of those programs open and say they're playing music, but they don't even appear in the volume mixer.
3. Both the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder are running, and restarting them has no effect. (Even though the sound troubleshooter suggests that the problem is with one of them.)
4. I have reinstalled the audio driver from Dell's website, and it had no effect.
5. I also updated the chipset, which had no effect.
6. I have switched to the generic Windows audio driver, which got rid of ALL sound.
7. There are no changes when I plug in headphones: sound still only comes from Chrome and the Windows system.
I'm at my wit's end. Any suggestions?

Answer:Dell XPS 8900 - Audio only working in certain programs

First reinstall the correct hardware sound driver as the Generic Windows driver does not have Stereo Mix.
Second, go to the Sound Panel, Recording section.  Set Stereo Mix as the default Recording device.
Many programs rely on Stereo Mix for their sound source and if not set that is probably the problem.
