sending ascii commands over serial rs232 to Philips TV

Question: sending ascii commands over serial rs232 to Philips TV

oke this is the problem,i have a Philips BDL4221, i accidently locked the remote control and the onboard buttons, so i cant change the input or change anything on the tv, i tried to send some thing via 232analyzer but i have no idea what to do, the tv send me 2 messages back those are CTS turned on and DSR turned on, i found this in the user manual from the tv but i dont have any idea what to do with this:3. Serial Interface Communication Protocol 3.1 General specifications 3.1.1 Protocol definition Communication to the main monitor microprocessor is possible through the serial port, which support a communication protocol dedicated to BDS only. The protocol is specifically designed to allow data communication in half duplex multi-point environments, but it can also be used for half duplex point-to-point RS-232 communication. 3.1.2 Communication characteristics A half duplex communication is implemented starting from the concept of a master-slave structure, where the monitor is supposed to be the slave. The first action is always taken by the master, which can be either a built-in PC-based video controller in a MASTER monitor or any external device (acting a server) interfaced to the monitor. After sending a command or a request in the appropriate format (see section 3.2), the master receives form the slave an acknowledgement, which tells the transmitter whether the command is not valid (or not executable, anyway) or it is accepted. In case of a request, the requested information is sent back and it becomes the acknowledgement by itself. If the poll sequence has been sent, the acknowledgement tells the transmitter the monitor status, i.e. whether it is ready or busy and other information. 3.1.3 RS232 pin assignment There is a 9-pin male connector on the set for RS232 communication. The pin assignment is as following table. Pin No. Function Description 1 GND Signal Ground 2 RxD Receive Data 3 TxD Transmit Data 4 NC Not Connected 5 GND Signal Ground 6 NC Not Connected 7 NC Not Connected 8 NC Not Connected 9 NC Not Connected 3.1.4 RS232 settings This section describes the parameters used during the whole communication process. The poll message in enclosed in a frame that has the following format: <Start> <Address> <E> <Stop> where: <Start> = <Esc> <$>, i.e. ASCII characters [1Bh] and [24h]. <Address> = 3 ASCII characters each of which ranging from [30h] to [39h], which are used as monitor address. <E> = the ASCII character [45h]. <Stop> = <;>, i.e. the ASCII character [3Bh].

Preferred Solution: sending ascii commands over serial rs232 to Philips TV

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't know if this forum fits my question but I'll try.

I'm communicating with a motion controller through a serial port.

I can send a command to it through windows hyper-terminal,which works fine, for example:

where Alt(...) means holding the alt key while typing the characters inside the parenthesis.

When I try to send this command to the serial port through Matlab I fail.
It seems Alt(0227) isn't ASCII(227) as I thought so which character is it? and how do I generate it on Matlab?

please help!!!!

We have a slitter scorer machine in which tools are placed via servo motors. Servo motor is controlled with servo drive and each servo drive is sent the values of a set of parameters to set a job. The main control system is DOS based which sends the values of parameters to all drives according to job. The data flowing is as MS DOS_RS232 port >>> RS232 to 485 converter >>> parallel connection to all servo Com ports. I want to monitor the data following from MS DOS to drives for which I have arranged another RS232 to 485 converter and connected a wire from TX+ terminal of 1st Comm module to the TX- terminal of 2nd Comm module. If I enable the hyper terminal, I see the data following but un-understandable format.

The format of data following from MSDOS PC to drives is like "7E-BF-02-04-3C-00" in ASCII format. So to read it I downloaded MS “PortMon” software which is used to monitor data following via RS232 port. I have windows XP and when I run the software, “Not Connected” is shown on the top bar. Please help how to make it “Connect” to capture the data. Or if anyone has any other idea to capture the data following, please assist.

Answer:How to capture the data following via RS232 in ASCII format.

If someone guide me about PortMon that how to make it "Connected" it would be enough for me. This time when i run PortMon, "Not Connected" displays at the top write corner.

Hello, so I bought cheap usb to rs232 cable off ebay and been trying to get it working. I tried installing many different drivers from internet and still windows is not recognizing my cable. I tried to copy drive file to system32\drivers, no luck.

Has anyone else had similar problem? Do I need to buy prober cable with driver cd included?

Thank you

I have purchased a usb to serial adapter but the drivers are not functional.

Every time I plug the cable inside my computer i get a USB device not recognized message. Under device management > Universal Serial Bus controllers > Unknown Device.

The drivers that i have is called "PL-2303 Driver Installer". Even after installing this driver, I still have no luck. I know it is possible to update the driver but the driver format would have to be in a .INF file. In this case the driver is a .exe file so i have no idea what to do.

Any help would be really greatly appreciated also the drivers are available @

If the device is functional and installed, it should be under the COM ports in device manager but like i said before it is not and is listed as "Unknown Device".

Since installing SP3 to my Windows XP Pro system my RS232 serial port no longer works. I have a Hyperpen tablet that has an RS232 connection so it no longer functions. Is there a converter that I can attach to the male RS232 so I can connect via a USB port? I have seen a USB 2.0 to RSB (male) serial adapter dongle but that is of no use. I'd appreciate any suggestions towards resolving this.

Answer:RS232 serial port not working

Have you checked in Device Manager to see if it is working there , or if there any conflicts . It won't have just broken , it must be a software problem as it occurred as you loaded SP3 , it might just need reconfiguring , what does the tablet need in terms of port speed etc. , data bits , flow control etc. ? Hi - here's an idiot question for you. I need to know whether or not my laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200) has something called an RS232 serial port. I think it probably doesn't, as I couldn't find it mentioned in System Information. But I'd like to know for sure before I fork out £30 for a USB adapter, which is what I'm told I'll need if there is no RS232 port. It's needed for a programme called DesignaKnit 7 - details of which can be found at, if anyone is interested. So, can anyone tell me how to find out for certain whether or not I have this port? Thanks v much, Helen

Answer:Do I have an RS232 serial port for cable link?

You do not have an RS-232 port on that laptop. Note that the site in question has specific recommendations for the RS-232 <-> USB link device, and I'd pick one of their recommendations:

I am thinking to use one PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port. The program that i need to use is running under DOS and needs two serial ports. My question is what i need to run the program and the serial port to be recognized by the system. I have a 4200 satellite pro series laptop.

Thank you

Answer:PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port on Satellite Pro 4200

Why on earth should you want that ?
Your laptop has a serial port hasn't it ?

Well for serial ports are standard supported under Windows. In a Dos-box this should be no problem.

But pure Dos could be a problem.
I guess you also need DOS-drivers for your PCMCIA-card...

But i need to send commands through NB IDE only as part of my project. Please help!!I'll post my error page.

Answer:BSOD while using NetBeans to send commands through serial port

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

Hello Friends,

I faced a problem There was a problem sending the command to the program. I am using Office 2007
on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I have not faced this problem on 32 bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate.
The reason for writing this post is to help those like me trying out each of those "possible cause and probable solution" flooding many websites. Someone says to "uncheck the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)", some point out 3rd party applications, some say to uninstalling some Hotfixes helped them, and guess what MS says ? It collected different success stories and sumarized it as case studies on :
In my view, the problem existed because proper parameters weren't passed to excel.

The following is the actual solution (Backup registry 1st):
1. Open Regedit, go to the following location :
2. Right click on the (Default) value, click modify. You will find the path of EXCEL.exe & switch,
in my case it is "F:\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e. Change to:
"F:\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1"
If there are whitespaces in the path, then enclose the path within double quotes.
Also, the %1 should be within double quotes.
3. Right click on the command value, click modify. Just put a "%1" next to the /e at the end.
4. Go to the... Read more

Does anyone know of a program which I could download which will allow (via a serial cable connection - I have the cable) data exchange between two computers?I know that serial is slow ... but time is not a problem. The "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" included in my XP Pro system is not friendly to use and seems to hang when I try to copy a complete folder (directory). Aaaaargh!Click to expand...

I use Fireworks 8 - should be similar in other versions

In Fireworks-
Go to Edit menu > Keyboard Shortcuts...
The top dialog box is "Current Set"
Drop down menu should offer option to reset standard Macromedia shortcuts to Photoshop shortcuts

Question: RS232 on TV

RS232 on TV and Freeview Sat box. What is this serial port for?

Answer:RS232 on TV

Dunno about the TV. But my Humax Freeview STB has serial connection which can be used for uploading firmware upgrades from PC (after first downloading from Internet). Although the upgrades are available over the air, they are available sooner off the Internet. For this to work, one requires (for my box) what is known as a Null Modem Cable (and, of course, a serial connection on your PC). Cables avaialble on ebay, maplin etc.If you haven't got a serial connection on your PC, you can get a USB to serial adapter. It should all be described in your manual.Maybe the TV can take firmware upgrades in a similar way.

Interestingly if I go into device manager, after installing the driver, and expand the tree so that i can see the driver one minute its there the next the device manager tree closes then opens and the driver disappears then it re-appears!My operating system is win xp home sp2.

TomGI've used usb-serial converters, not all with the same degree of success. In most cases however, a reboot seemed to cure most ails, and sometimes only with the usb converter connected before boot up. Not a lot offer, but might be worth a try if you haven't already...

Question: RS232 vs. Parallel

While working on a larger problem I found I was not quite sure of the port and cableling names. Is DB-25 RS232 the same as a Parallel port? Also, What is RS422 and RS485.

I know that DB-9 is RS232 and a serial port, so I assume that DB-25 RS232 is simiar to a serial port but I think I may be getting it mixed up with a standard Parallel port as well.

I had found one site but it was too technical for what I need to know. I just want to know an example of it's purpose and what type of connecter they use.

If someone could straighten me out on all this it would help me a lot.

[in case your wondering about the larger involves Punch Press machines, controls, and a BTR board. It seems most BTR's use a serial (DB9 RS232 connection) but ours uses what I am calling the parallel port]

Early serial connector layouts  were defined by the computer maker.  If that was they way they did it, that was the way it worked. Standard layouts became standard later. The layout you show in the picture is not exceptional at all. Here is another almost the same. with photos like this one:

How do I determine if the USB port is actually getting data to/from the system's COM port?

Some info:
- I have Vista Home Premium
- I purchased a Generic USB to RS232 adapter (from China) based on a PL2303 chip.
- The driver that came with the adapter seems to have installed properly.
- I have RealTerm installed.
- I jumpered Tx to Rx plus other pins on the male DB9 connector.
- I sought help from Prolific (re PL2303), but found nothing helpful.

But I don't know how to look for data passing through the adapter. What I type on the keyboard does not show up on the RealTerm screen.
I've worked with RS232 for years, and know about the signal-type on the USB port.
But now I am stumped, and about to cut the vinyl covers of the adapter.

Question: RS232 problem

This is for the really old hands...

Got this Seiko labelprinter on Com4 (hispeed pci serial card).
My mobo is Asus P5Q3 wifi-ap deluxe.
I am always on a hell of a ride before I get this to work, these are the options shown in device mgr.:
bps 9600...115200 (several tried)
databits 8
parity none
stop bits 1
flow control none/hardware/xon-xoff (think hardware was the control of choice when it at at last worked for prior W7 installs: Beta, RC, W7)
Com 4

Msg "printer communication error".
Only possible setting on the printer is the com port.

Now I can try for days changing this and that and maybe as before it starts to work "just like that", but it is annoying: I had a crash and reinstalled W7 Ultimate.

W7 gives me a choice of two universal drivers, V8 and V10, tried to change to V8 but that doesn't change anything.

Answer:RS232 problem

Normally you don't need to change settings on the port itself. I would look towards a driver issue here (check for drivers for the printer itself that are comparable with W7)

Hi, You might want to check and see if the machine receiving the data and the computer is set the same. (Data Bits,Parity, Protocol, Speed, Stop Bits, and Handshaking) They have to match on both or it will not work.
What DNC software are you using and what control is on the machine?

Hi allI am thinking of buying a new lap-top (nothing fancy) but I note that none seem to have an RS232 port any more.I MUST have RS232 because one use of the laptop would be in communicating with all sorts of strange devices that use RS232 (using all sorts of software).I know that USB to RS232 converters exist BUT now to the question:One piece of software I use is Hyperterminal and it "looks" for ports (eg RS232), but as far as I can tell, doesn't see USB (my son's laptop only has USB, and Hyperterminal only comes up with TCP, modem and COM4 (IIRC) which is the infra-red port). And all the other software (i.e. other than Hyperterminal) just seems to find COM1 and then works. Thus, does anyone know how all these RS232 bits of software could find the "port" via USB? Would the USB to RS232 converter cable have software that turns USB into COM1?Has anyone used stuff like Hyperterminal via USB?Thanks for any help.Skeletal

i bought a cheap usb to rs232 cable of ebay for £2 with a driver disc.

When i connect usb to port the wizard takes over and asks to install disc but then it will not install .
Have downloaded different drivers but it still wont work, drivers are on desktop i think
thought cable was not working so ordered another but same problem.
Am i doing something wrong?

Answer:usb to rs232 problem?

Some manufacturers of converters like this require you to install the driver software before connecting the converter to the computer. I would suggest going into device manager and uninstalling the converter, restart the computer. Hopefully on the driver disk there is a "setup" or "install" utility that can be executed, run this install and after it is done connect the converter to the USB port on the computer and let the New Hardware Wizard do its thing. If this doesn't fix the problem try a different vendors converter.

Question: No RS232 support

First, I appologize for this being so long-----I have a laptop I was given to use at work that is dual booted into Windows 98 and XP Professional. The Windows 98 is being used for the DOS architecture only. It is not a full operating system setup. I use this DOS for operating a data acquisition machine. However, this new laptop does not have an RS232 port for the DB9 adapter cable that is on the data machine. What I am trying to do is to use a USB conversion cable as this laptop has many USB ports. I know I need a USB driver for this to work. I went to the adapter's webpage and downloaded the driver for Win98 (as there is no driver support for DOS). Here is my dilemna: being that Win98 is not a full operating system, the driver will not load. Is there some way I can manually place the driver in config.sys and autoexec.bat in the DOS architecture. I have tried many configurations that did not work. Unfortunately this data system has to run in DOS only.

Answer:No RS232 support

No.It would have to be a driver written specifically for DOS to work properly.

I have used X10 successfully for many years and controlled my whole house via a CM11A controller. This controller connected to my PC through a serial port and could be easily programmed to change lights etc. Since the old PC died and I have bought a new one there is no serial socket on it. I got a cable adapter recently and installed the driver. After some jigging to get the device to be on COM2 (CM11A only allows 1 - 4) I still can't program the CM11A. The Activehome software fails its communication test to COM2. I downloaded a serial port monitor and it looks like bits are sending. Now I'm stuck! Any ideas out there?

Answer:USB to RS232 cable problems

Look in Properties for COM2 and check the baud rate, parity, number of bits, etc is configured properly. The manual I found says 4800 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.

I have an old trusty 2000VA UPS that has an RS232 communications port and I wonder if there's some way I can get Windows 7 64-bit to see the UPS via a USB converter cable. This UPS does not come with any Windows 7 driver or management software, Is buying a new UPS the only way forward if i want to protect my ASUS Republic of Gamers Core i7-3770K @ 4.6GHz machine?

Answer:UPS USB-to-RS232 Converter and Windows 7

The UPS doesn't have to be connected to the PC via USB or serial to protect it so you can use it as is.

Buy it will likely work for management with a USB to Serial adapter, Windows 7 has built in support for many APC UPS's out of the box. You may also find newer APC software for your model on the APX website.

So I just recently had the misfortune of being asked to wipe a X1 Carbon of it's pre-loaded Win7, replacing it with a clean Win7 installation. This has caused a licensing issue as there appears to be no Win7 serial-sticker on the laptop itself. Therefore the newly installed Windows 7 operative system won't activate. Looking through online manuals I've learned that these X1 Carbon machines are Win8-branded, meaning if I wish to kep Win7 I'd have to make a recovery disk myself prior to formatting it. This was not done, to my misfortune. My question is then: Is my only solution to order a recovery disk from lenovorecovery dot com, or is there an alternative solution? We are not running Win8, and I would prefer to avoid using our own licenses for a machine that was already purchased with W7 and should have it's own license. Just curious if there's a fix.  Many thanks for your time! //Ken

Answer:X1 Carbon Retrieve serial for Win7 pre-loaded with no serial sticker [Win8 branded]

Hello and welcome,
According to Microsoft, the way to activate in your situatin is to use an existing, already in use Windows 7 key, let it fail, and call to complete the activation.  Don't use one of your available keys, or it will (probably) get used.
Here's the link to the MS page that "explains" this: Understanding downgrade rights

Hello! I've got X1 carbon for 2 years. Unfortunately, today it stopped working...Since the warranty is 36 months, I'm going to bring it to service. BUT. Unfortunatelly, the sticker with serial is lost. Is it possible to restore the serial by modem IMEI (shown on modem card) or wifi MAC? Or may be by motherboard serial number? I wonder, how authorized service would check if my notebook has warranty left (it does not boot!)I have invoice left. However, no serial is printed on it....

Answer:restore notebook serial number by IMEI/WIFI MAC/motherboard serial

HiLaptop s/n could be rewritten easy via WMIC interface or some tools, so the service technician may request additional proofs.Any way:1. open command prompt window and execute the following commands:wmic.exe csproduct get vendor, name, identifyingnumberwmic.exe baseboard get product, serialnumberwmic.exe nicconfig where DHCPEnabled='true' get caption,macaddress2. there are several codes on the systemboard surface that might proof your laptop legality:- somewhere, but at the visible area, system board s/n is being placed. It begins with "11S" symbols (22 in total), includes systemboard manufactured p/n that matches with one you've got via WMIC and Lenovo partslookup service shows by laptop s/n. The 2nd part of that s/n on the systemboard includes its short s/n that matches with one you've got via WMIC;- there should be Ethernet adapter MAC address on the laptop base cover internal side. It should match with one you've got via WMIC.

I have a client who got screwed by a dealer. That co. sold him QTY 3 of this:

for the price of $899 Each. They bought it in July.

Except their ver. is even worse, it's only dual core Celeron. The PC run so slow that they can't get anything done. So they are forced to buy 3 brand new real PC.

Now the old Acer junk PC has 3 activated license of Office 2013 Home and Business edition in it. Since these Acer PC are junk, I try to pull the serial no. off from the PC, and they can't find it. In fact, even if you go to those software website, they didn't mention Office 2013 on it.

Now that co. charged him an extra $225 x 3 per office 2013 license for those 3 junk PC. And so far, I have no way of pulling the serial no. out.

So I try to login to microsoft to activate office 2013, but he doesn't have an outlook / hotmail acct., and his personal email acct. can't login to microsoft.

Why doesn't these key finder software able to find Office 2013 serial no. and what can he do at this point?

Answer:How come serial no. finder software can't find Office 2013 serial no.?

Thread with a lot of answers, mostly pointing towards Belarc, with some comments that there might not be a product key at all if those installs of Office 2013 are linked to the Microsoft Account used to install them.

I have a CyberPower USB to RS232 adapter. From the research I have done this should create a Com Port in my "Device Manager" so that programs
are then able to use it. I have researched this specific device and there are apparently problems with how it works on WIndows 8.1 but I have not been able to find a solution. The driver for the device was installed by WIndows plug-and-play controls. It decided
that the "HID-compliant vendor-defined device" driver version 6.3.9600.16384 was appropriate, however there is no Com Port in the "Device Manager" and instead a "USB Input Device" appears corresponding to the adapter each time
it is plugged in. Under the "Devices and Printers" the "Unspecified" device "CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS" shows up.

When I attempt to use drivers from a different source (the manufacturer of the USB to RS232 adapter), the plug-and-play ignore the new drivers and use the ones from above.

How can I get the Com Port created so that I can use the adapter properly?

Is there a way to circumvent the plug-and-play and use the driver from the manufacturer?

Thank you for your help.

Answer:CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS - not creating Com Port

Regarding current situation, let?s try to manually install the driver by following these steps:

Device manager -> Right click the device and choose update driver -> Browser my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device driver? -> Have disk -> choose the driver manually to install.

Then let me know whether this device can work fine.

Answer:Adding an RS232 PCI port to my desktop

Check to see if you have a PCI slot. Some newer PC's only have PCIe slots and if they have a PCI slot it is a "bridged" slot to the PCIe bus and many PCI devices will not work or work properly on a bridged PCI slot.

I would check and see what others with that software are using.

Hello Techguy
I have a USB to RS232 converter which came with a driver disk. I can load the driver in and everything seems to load OK. However, when I then plug in the converter, it can not find the driver.

What it seems to be looking for is a driver called "USB2.0-SER!". However, the device seems to be a Prolific chip device and I would have expected to see it looking for something like "PL2303" or similar. I searched the computer for a driver with this name but no luck.

I went to the Prolific website and downloaded their driver but that didn't work any better.

I know these devices work as I have seen them working on other computers. How do I get it going?

Here is the deal. Where I work we have a ticketmaster application that uses a seperate RS232 network. This means special lines that run to a special little ticketmaster box in my switch room. Needless to say it is a royal PITA when we have to move these computers connected to this special network.

So to fix this I was hoping there were some kind of RS232 to ether net adapters out there. I know they exist, but I think the solution I need is special. i need an Adapter on the PC side that talks to an adapter on the switch side. So basically the flow would go like this:

COM Port --> Convertor Box --> Ethernet --> Converter Box --> Com Port on Special Box

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hello All,

As a surveyor, I'm trying to slowly solve all the glitches on my new Windows 8.1 laptop.

1. Mouse

I often visit this NSW government site SIX Maps

When navigating the map, you use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out and hold down the left mouse button to pan.

In my new windows 8.1 laptop, the scroll and pan functions won't work.

Iv'e tried 4 different mice and none of them work but they all work on my old XP laptop.

I've also tried 2 browsers (Chrome and IE)

I have also been in touch with the NSW goverment support team to no avail.

Looking in control panel, I couldn't recognise anything that would help.

Does anyone have any ideas?
2. USB to RS232 serial port cable replicator

This cable is used to download/upload information to the survey instrument. It worked fine on Windows XP, but will not work on Windows 8.1. It may be something to do with the port configuration.

Please note that the software is very old and I had to create a virtual XP machine using VMWARE to run it. (As well as some other obsolete software such as XTGOLD and Q.EXE! Any one remember these? I've yet to come across any file editing program to equal Q.EXE)

Hopefully someone will have some ideas otherwise I'll have to go back to the manufacturer and they'll charge more than I paid for the computer!!!

Thanks in advance for your help,

Answer:Problem with mouse and USB to RS232 cable

Well, I tried the link you provided and I was able to scroll using IE, Logitech Mouse, and Windows 8.1 Pro (64 bit). However, when I first accessed the site, it said that their site would work better with FireFox or Chrome. I have Chrome installed but did not try it.

USB to RS232, which end connects where? Does the USB end connect to the computer or the survey equipment? When running your XP, does it provide an error when you try to connect upload/download data? I would think that your VMWARE and XP will be able to handle everything, but you will need to play with port settings to have everything configured the way it was before. For example, my wife's computer is Windows 8.1 Pro, and I have her run VMWARE and Windows XP so she can use the embroidery module for her sewing machine. The one thing you have to do is to make sure that when you start the VM machine, you must tell the VM machine to use anything plugged into the USB ports to be used in the XP and not the Host machine.

Anyway, don't give up yet and keep poking around you'll find a solution.

Question: Ascii

I am applying for a fellowship that requires me to submit part of the application (my info/essay questions) as follows:

"A one page typewritten description (ASCII disk or audiotape) identifying..."

Sorry if I sound a little silly by asking, but...
does that mean I can just submit a printed, typewritten paper? Or do I have to do things a little differently? I could do an audiotape BUT for this purpose I'd prefer writing so I can correct it (just got a term paper for my "how to be a teacher" class back today. It would've been 100 but for two spelling errors which I was busted for. Proof that teachers are human too? )

If it matters, I am using open office and/or documents to go for blackberry (open office if I can get ti done on my desktop tonight, docs to go if it doesn't).
I have never heard of ASCII (and melyogi was rushing off somewhere so I couldn't ask her) and so I want to make sure before I send in this thing I do get to know what it is so I don't fubar my application.

If it's simple and stupid, just tell me so I can laugh at myself for not knowing better.

In the meantime I'll start typing what I need to type and if I need to convert, c'est la vie!

Meanwhile, wish me luck (let's hope I get it)!

A system we use at work requires us to run gps's to serial ports. On occasion, after rebooting, windows detects the activity on the serial port as a serial mouse....then all hell breaks loose with the jumps all over the screen left and right clicking as it pleases! It's actually quit funny...

The way we handle bye killing power to the gps....which instantly calms the pointer down....then going into device manager and disableing the phantom serial mouse. It works....but the problem allways pops up again sooner of later.

I doubt many have had experience with this, but can anyone think of a way to prevent it?

Thanks for the help.

Answer:gps detected as serial mouse on serial/comm port

Check the bios settings to make sure that the Com Port is not set to WAKE-On setting, along with the fact that the serial port is set at Com2.

It also sounds like the Com Port setting in WinXP is set wrong for the Serial port, which I would check.

On a box running Server 2003 the application needs to talk out a serial port to an OPTO-22 I/O system. The Optoscan program from the manufacturer works just fine. After several attempts at trying different driver versions, no drivers seem to load now.

These drivers are for a Prolific PL2303 USB to RS232 converter - although I did not buy the device from that company. The drivers used to install easily and I actually had one that partially worked.

At one point, I went to the Windows/System32 and manually deleted all the files and "packages" for those drivers. This likely screwed everything up and I don't know how to recover. I have the option of doing a full system recovery, but it will take days of work to arrive back at the current configuration.

After several attempts to install and uninstall all these drivers again, nothing seems to work. When I plug in the device, Vista looks for the driver in Windows Update and of course finds none. In Device Manager (DM), the annotation for the Port is Unknown device. When I try to manually install the driver through the DM, it fails. The code is sometimes 1 and other times 19.

System Info says I'm running Vista Home Premiun X86-based PC, but the sticker on the laptop says Athlon 64 X2 dual-core (Acer Aspire 4530).

Any fixes?

I have a legacy DOS program that writes data to files. Some of the files have 15 columns and we once used a wide carriage dot matrix in condensed print mode (which put the information on 8 1/2 x 11 paper at 17 cpi). I need to print the same amount of information on 8 1/2 x 11 paper only now we have Laser and inkjet. Is there an easy way to send my ASCII text to print? Like a Batch file or something?

First of all - if I am delving into the illegal I am innocent (honest, AcaCandy, et al).

On this web-page here are some instructions on how to. I was doing quite well - all things considered - when I came up against this:

"Steps to Creating a Bootable Windows Setup Disk from the I386 Directory/Folder"

Create an ASCII text file with only the word "Windows " (without the quotes and including the final space after the word "Windows") in it, followed by a new line. To do this, open up Notepad. Notepad can be found in your Start menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad. Type the word "Windows" without the quotes and following my case exactly (that is, "W" is a capital letter and the rest are in small letters). Then type one additional space. Finally, hit the ENTER key. Do not add anything else to this file. Do not change anything - for example, do not type everything in capital letters or anything like that. The contents of the file must be exactly as I said, or Windows setup will issue an error message. Click to expand...

It is that word ASCII which has me puzzled.

So I have done what I think he is telling me to do (see attachment) but I don't understand what is ASCII about it.

A little help much appreciated. I have been reading about and generating ASCII but this has not helped.

Hey guys/girls...

I have a few ASCII values that I've converted from Hex and I need to find a certain value from them, and the conversion method to get there.

For example, say I have the value

I need to know how to convert that from that notation to a decimal value, with a % sign. The value that it holds is "5.3%"

I've converted (using a web converter found here: it to the ASCII "PÇG " but cannot figure out how to do it...any help is appreciated...

Answer:ASCII Conversion to a certain value

I can't even begin to understand what you're really trying to do here. Are you programming in some computer language, or what?

Answer:I can't use ascii codes

Hi Svandalo,
Thanks for posting!
How to get ascii characters on your laptop keyboard
Getting ascii characters on a regular keyboard simply requires that you press alt + a combination of numbers on your number pad.  However, it's just a little bit different on a laptop that doesn't have a normal number pad.
To get ascii characters on a laptop keyboard you can use one of two methods.
Press and hold the fn + alt keys, punch in the number of the ascii character you want and then let go of the fn + alt keys
orPress fn + num lk keys (the little light above num lk should light up), and then press alt + the number of the ascii character you want on the laptop number pad.
If you used the first method and you want to get ¾, you just press and hold fn + alt, punch in 0190 on the laptop numpad and then let go fn + alt.  You should then see ¾.

Post back if you need additional assistance.  Thanks.

Question: Ascii keys

Hello There

Just a small question.
How do I change a letter e.g. i to a smalller letter which resides a little below the line or above the line. It is part of a mathematical equation which is written in a Word Document.
I use to know but have forgotten. I think the letter should be highlighted and some shortcut key should be pressed to change it.

Thanks very much for any suggestions

Question: ASCII File

Ok I know this is a really dumb and basic question. Is an ASCII file the same as a text (.txt) file? I have a resume in word format that needs to be submitted in ASCII Text format. Is a doc file ASCII Text? I don't think that it is.

Also, I would proably loose my formatting won't I? Is there a way to keep the formatting in an ASCII file?

Would a rich text file still be considered an ASCII file? The web site says it must be an "ASCII TEXT format" file but gives no extension.

Answer:ASCII File

my guess is that by ascii they mean plain text as in .txt. you would lose formatting since word files are saved in a proprietery format. rtf is also not plain text. technically iirc it's stored as plain text but the plain text is all of the formatting information so it's not easily readable. i would try saving the word doc as a plain text file by file -> save as and see what happens

it may be worth finding an email address/phone number so you can ask about it
