Front USB Ports not Working - "Unknown Device" in Device Manager

Question: Front USB Ports not Working - "Unknown Device" in Device Manager

Hello,I recently put together a new computer, and in the process of of installing the USB 3.0 connector from the front of my GX500 case, I either bent numerous pins on the motherboard USB 3.0 header or the motherboard shipped that way and I inadvertently made matters worse. Anyway, that header on the motherboard is without a doubt unusable.Since I don't really need the USB 3.0 functionality, I bought a USB 3.0 -> 2.0 adapter cable, connected one end to the connector on the front of the case and the other end into the USB 2.0/1.1 header on the motherboard. Unfortunately, when Windows 7 boots and I plug a device into the front ports of the case, Windows detects the front USB ports as "Unknown Device" within Device Manager yet says the driver is successfully installed. I've already downloaded the most current Intel chipset drivers for my motherboard, deleted and reinstalled all USB drivers, and all rear USB connections are working perfectly fine - it's just the two front ports that are connected from the case to the USB 2.0/1.1 ports via the adapter cable. I've tried both USB 2.0/1.1 headers on the motherboard, and I've tried plugging in several devices to the front USB ports, and this problem still persists.I've ensured the connection inside the case is solid, yet I cannot get Windows to recognize the front USB ports. However, I have confirmed that power is being sent to the front ports because it charges my phone when I connect it to the front USB ports via micro USB connection. As a result, I'm inclined to think this is a driver issue rather than a hardware issue. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Hi,

On a fresh clean Windows 8 image, my software driver (signed) installs fine and shows up properly in the Device Manager. However once i uninstall it , subsequent reinstalls show up as 'Unknown Device' in the Device Manager.

From the device details, I find that it refers to /looks for the .inf file in c:\windows\inf folder but the file itself is missing from the location. The FileRepository has all the required files. But trying to update from there also fails.

Could anyone help me with troubleshooting this problem. What could be going wrong.

Thx,
Gita

I cannot get the wired ethernet or wireless working at all on this laptop. Under the Device Manager, the Broadcom 440x 10/100 NIC and the Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG are both under "Unknown Devices". There is no "Network Adapters" like there should be. While it looks like both drivers are installed correctly, Windows doesn't recognize them as network hardware. There is nothing under network connections. I tried uninstalling the drivers from the Device Manger and restarting and XP just reinstalls the drivers and puts them right back under "Unknown". I also tried a system restore to when they did work and they still don't work now.

Any ideas? Anyway I can get "Network Adapters" back in the Device Manager?

Answer:NICs are showing up under "Unknown" and not "Network Adapaters'" in device manager

If they show up as unknown..the drivers are not installed correctly. Remove them...get the proper drives for them...you'll probably have to transfer those drivers over using something like a USB thumb drive. Follow the instructions on installing those drivers.

We used to have "stereo mix" option that enabled streaming audio recording without having to have the audio playing through the speakers. How do I do that now? What replaces that capability? Who makes my sound card? Why is that not readily available somewhere in Dell land? I can't believe forum searching found pretty much nothing on this.

Answer:Latitude E6530 Windows 10 no "stereo mix" option for sound input device, only "high definition audio device" with Microsoft driver and unknown manufacturer.

aj_chicagoWho makes my sound card?
Hello. The audio chip manufacturer was IDT.
aj_chicagoWhat replaces that capability?
IDT doesn't have "stereo mix", so I'm not sure how you used to have it on the E6530. IDT has an equivalent capability that it calls Rec.Playback. That can be found in the list of recording devices, after the IDT driver is installed.
aj_chicagoHow do I do that now?
Dell doesn't support audio on an E6530 that has had Win10 installed. The IDT company went out of the consumer audio business long before there was a Win10 OS, so there is no Win10 IDT driver for that model. Your computer is currently using the Windows native audio driver, which, as you say, does not support a stereo mix kind of feature.
You should be able to install the IDT driver for Win7 by installing with compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  [There are two "formats" on the driver's page. Scroll down to the 2nd one, named "Hard Drive" format, and download that one, not the 1st one named "Windows Update Package".]2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the dri... Read more

(Please tell me if I'm in the wrong area of this board)

But a friend living hundreds of miles away uses XP and ran an "unasked for" Pop-Up utility that said he had computer problems because of malware or spyware some unnamed entity had installed on his computer. Unfortunately he doesn't remember the name of the "so called spyware detector/remover", but he fell for the "Warning" and ran the program to "check" his system.

Of course, as most those unrequested detect/remover programs do...it found many "so called serious" problems. But would Not "fix/clean them" unless he payed for the program.

From THAT point on, his CD-ROM wouldn't work(which it had dependably always before)....the Device Manager that it "is there" and what make/model it is....and also says that it is enabled and working properly(but it isn't working, as before). And the Icon disappeared from from the My Computer folder. I guess that program somehow did something to it, in order to force people to pay for the program to "fix it" and othe so-called problems!

Has anybody ever heard of this?
Can you help me get his CD-ROM accessable and working dependably as before? Please??

thanks,
jA--

Hi, I'm trying to reinstall my sister's scanner driver because XP has decided that it's not there any more. This happens occasionally and usually reinstalling the driver fixes it (I think that's what I did last time), but this time i just can't get it to work.

If i unplug the USB cable then plug it in again, it comes up with a message saying that the device has malfunctioned and it doesn't recognize it. I have the driver CD but windows always manages to install it as "Unknown device" before i can tell it to search the CD. I've tried telling it to reinstall the driver from the CD but it says that there are "no better matches for this device". I've also tried uninstalling the program form the CD and reinstalling it then restarting the pc but that didn't help either. I tried plugging it into another USB port (as suggested by Windows Help Center) but that still didn't work.

It's not often that something like this gets me in a circle and scratching my head but I'm really starting to run out of ideas.

Any help would be very appreciated, i just want to get this thing running again

I am running Win7x64 on a newly installed (non-laptop)
MSI ZH77A-G43 motherboard with i5-3570

I spent a couple of days ensuring that I had installed all of the drivers
including the chipset, facilitated by MSI's LiveUpdate5.

I have a simple USB thumb drive.
I take it to my roommate's (VISTA) computer--it plugs in just fine. I cleaned, rewrote, read.
I did a check for errors scan; in properties, it is FAT formatted with default allocation size (2056).

I plug it into my computer (detailed at top). I am not even getting a common problem--"unrecognized USB device."
It does not even know that it is USB apparently--I get an error box from the system tray:
TITLED: Driver Software Installation
Device driver software was not successfully installed.

SIDE-EFFECTS:
There is a small led on the thumb drive that shines steady.
(assumably indicating something is wrong; nevertheless power is present)
(normally, it flashes on and off a couple of times when recognized on VISTA computer.)
(yes I tried multiple USB plugins, on front and back of tower-case)
I hear an audible "g-dunk" sound every 1 second.
The Device Manager window, though functional and operational, briefly flashes

Neither of the USB port devices (the 4 x USB below, or the multi-port device above) will power up a 2.5" USB drive enclosure. Also, some SELF-powered external drives, when plugged into the 2 devices, give read-write errors.

Memory cards, mouse antennas, and even an HP printer will communicate properly through the ports.

Is there a BIOS setting maybe for the headers on the mobo, that will affect this?

Answer:Front Panel USB ports won't power up USB 2.5" device...

No. Typically a sign of low quality cabling/connectors used for the case ports. You can get a port bay to install into an available 3.5" or 5.25" bay.

Built three computers, each one is showing a "PCI Device" and a "PCI Serial Port" in the device manager. The motherboard is an Intel D945GTP, I installed all the drivers for it on all three computers, yet they all show this mysterious device. There is a serial port on the back of the computer, and I don't see a COM port in the device manager, but shouldn't those drivers have come with the Chipset drivers?

So, Right after Network Adapters, and before Processors, I have an "Other Devices" listed and under that, with a yellow warning "!" icon is an entry for "Unknown device"

Isn't that special?

The General tab under Properties says the drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28), and reveals no other useful information other than under the Details tab where is displays "CONFIGFLAG_FAILEDINSTALL"

How can I find out what this is supposed to be, or, how do I delete the entry? White out?

I'm experiencing slim keyboard not being recognized in the Windows 8.1
The keyboard was working fine until just one day it just stopped working.
I tried factory reset literally 8 times along with most recent BIOS update and dell's recommended update software. + power setting --> disabling power saving on USB
It still come up as unrecognized each time even with fresh reinstall.
I was wondering if this is a hardware issue or just software bug from factory reset.
I don't think there is a available driver for this kind of problem is there?

Hello,
I have looked over many, many other forums and threads regarding this issue, but to no avail, have not been able to solve my problem. I'm starting to think that some hardware that communicates with my Webcam could be damaged - but I have not given up hope that this could be solved alternatively.

Here are some of my PC specs:

Other OS Description Not Available
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

My laptop came preinstalled with Windows Vista Home Edition - I have since upgraded. The webcam was functional with both OS. Also, my BIOS is not updated with the most recent available software (F.15 is available). I had F.15 and downgraded to F.14 to see if that might solve my issue, but it did not.
I have tried a variety of different things (clean boot, various installs of the driver, uninstalled all of the devices listed in Universal Serial Bus controllers and restarted), but again, to no avail.

IBM ThinkCentre A50 8320-7EG, Windows XP

Just reformatted and reinstalled, lists the ethernet, audio and video as 'unknown devices' (ethernet at least definately worked fine before reformat). All integrated with the motherboard.

Have tried to install drivers from the disk, downloaded from the IBM website and from driver packs but nothing has had any effect, using the wizard it won't recognise any drivers, installing the alleged drivers manually it says they have installed on the installation wizard thing, but nothing's changed with the device in device manager.

I assume somehow I must have the wrong drivers, but not sure how this could be the case, or really what else I can try.

Thanks very much for any help!!

I have two issues, which I think are related. In the Device Manager, it shows under USB Controllers "Unknown device". "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

I tried updating the driver, but the driver was correct.

I tried disabling the device.

I uninstalled the device. Windows reinstalled it at next boot, but the problem reappeared.

There is no Imaging Devices in the Device Manager.

At the same time, my webcam failed to open. Message "Webcamera initialization failed."

I downloaded the correct webcam program from Toshiba, installed it, but same result.

This all started when I uninstalled and reinstalled Skype. I have tried uninstalling it again, but still no webcam.

The webcam is enabled in the BIOS.

I really do not want to reinstall Windows.

All help appreciated.

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

Greetings,

I'm running Home Premium 64 on a Sony Vaio Laptop (CS170F). I'm having a curious problem: Yesterday I plugged into the machine the dongle of my wireless logitech mouse, and for some reason the machine said "Your unknown device is ready to use" (my OS is in spanish, the messages may not be accurately translated). Since then, an annoying message pops every few seconds warning about an "unrecognized USB device", that "didn't work as expected". The best part is this, if I click on the tray icon, sometimes the informative dialog window is emply, an other times shows all the USB ports in the system plus one extra with a "unknown UBS device", even without any device plugged into the system. I've tryed removing the unknown device from the device manager, but it shows up again.

I'll really appreciate any pointer, link or suggestion.

Thanks in advance, and best regards.
Antonio.

Peace be upon all of you.
Hello and greetings.

My laptop is ASUS model A455L. My CD/DVD drive was working fine until one moment it disappeared from both "This PC" folder as well as from "Device Manager". It happened while I was burning a CD with Ashampoo Burning Studio 15. My current OS is Windows 8.1 (as what it was as when I purchased this laptop), and I do not upgrade/downgrade to any other OS.

I went through searching the internet for the solutions for weeks but failed to solve the problem.

1. Among the suggestions found on the internet is to delete the upper and lower class filters, but mine is not involved as it does not have any entry that says upper or lower class to begin with.

2. Another suggestions that I had tried was the addition of the following in the Registry:reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001"
I did the registry entry of the above by command prompt (admin) as well as manually in the regedit but failed to produce the results.

Answer:CD/DVD Drive missing from "My PC" & "Device Manager"

First, there are no drivers for CD/DVD drives except the built in Windows drivers.

Since the device is not being detected by Windows, either there is some type of hardware problem or the BIOS is not detecting it (If the BIOS does not detect the drive, Windows will not detect it).

A BIOS reset is the easiest thing to do. Most BIOS have an option to reset it to the defaults. I would try this first.

If the BIOS reset does not fix it, there is some type of hardware problem. Whether its a connection problem for the drive (there are two connectors, data connection and power connection) either at the drive end or at the controller end (motherboard end). Or if the drive itself has failed. Unfortunately with a Laptop, accessing the connectors may require complete disassembly of the laptop.

This has become a great annoyance to me.

Whenever I have my keyboard and mouse plugged into my computer (the mouse uses a USB port on the KB (it's a G-15)) I keep getting messages of "USB Device Not Recognized", however, the mouse and keyboard work perfectly fine. It's not really a problem, it's not restricting me, but it is extremely annoying.

Any solution to this problem?

Note: I recently re-installed Windows (literally about an hour ago), it did not do this beforehand.
Note 2: I have tried to restart the computer.

Answer:"USB Device Not Recognized" but the device is working fine.

A search turned up some easy things.

Does this happen coming out of sleep or hibernate?
Does this happen in another USB port
I think you said you rebooted - no change. If you haven't rebooted, give that a go.

Last one: right click on the device in Device Manager and select "Scan for update". Could be the USB, mouse or kb - scan all asscociated devices

That's all I have,

Bill

All of my USB Ports just stopped working. When I go to the device manager and check them I get the code 19 error:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.

I wasn't even in the registry and I have no idea how to restore the old settings that are apparently damaged.

I check microsoft and they said this:

A registry problem was detected.

This can occur when more than one service is defined for a device, if there is a failure opening the service subkey, or if the driver name cannot be obtained from the service subkey. Try these options:

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

Click Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable driver.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good Configuration, which rolls back to the most recent successful registry configuration.
I did all those things and they still do not work. I think it is likely that I'll have to manual restore the registry valves for each USB port - but I have no idea how.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I am having a horrible night. Please someone show me how to fix this in the registry. I do not have system restore running so I can't use that. I hope no one ever has luck like this...

I have a customized Asus M4A875-M system with:

- BluRay & DVD R/W optical drives (2)
- 500W Antec power supply

= Linux Mint 17.2
= Windows 10

My boot loader is grub2 with a nice custom boot menu using this background image.

The issue is the Seagate drive is listed as an "unknown device" under Windows 7 Ultimate OS (along with 3 other volumes) despite the fact it works OK when I boot Windows 7 Home Premium. Haven't gotten Windows 10 to boot yet, so don't know about that, but its just fine under all of the Linux OSs too.

I have all of these backed up using Macrium on a 3TB external USB also.

All of the UUIDs for each disk and partition (volume) are unique as reported by gparted under Linux. Having an issue with Windows 10, but I'm saving that for a separate thread.

The Seagate was showing up OK before the FW and RAM update. I may have confused the Win 7 Ultimate OS when I had to remove the CMOS battery to reset mobo, and I forget to switch the SATA ports to AHCI mode. Win 7 Ult. booted up, but many volumes weren't recognized. When I discovered and fixed the move 4 items shown as "unkno... Read more

About 1/3 of these crashes are blamed on memory corruption directly. Some of the others indirectly.

These crashes were caused by memory corruption (probably a driver). Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

Does anyone know a fix for this common problem:

My PC's (running XP Pro SP3) mapped network drives say "Unknown Network Device" but they work just fine.

Is there a way to get windows to like them as the normal "Network Device".

I ran across these other posts with people with the same problem, but didn't see any sure-fire fix listed:

Described here. I have a problem with finishing work on "unknown device". For a moment, after installing from the DELL (www.dell.com/.../advanced) driver "ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver ", file DRVR_WIN_R309372.EXE Device Manager has stopped showing that there is an" unknown device "in the configuration. After updating to "ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver", the Chipset_Driver_RCHTX_WN_2.00.10.34_A11.EXE file, from the same DELL page, again appeared in the configuration unknown device.
I decided to remove the ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver from the system via the Control Panel to install only DRVR_WIN_R309372.EXE. Unfortunately, the installation can not be resumed, the message "Found incompatible installation of, Version. Please uninstall it via Control Panel Add / Remove Programs before installing this version of Accelerometer". The problem is that Control Panel no longer shows this application. Suspecting that there were some traces left after the previous installation, I tried to remove them from the File Manager and also edited the registry. In the registry I searched for: "R309372", "RCHTX", "Microelectronics", "AccelerometerP11". I deleted the entries containing the above characters. I would be grateful for directional guidance on how to proceed further. I am using Windows 10 64 bit Dell Precision M4500.

Answer:USB2.0 4 MiniSD memory "unknown device"

Try a different USB port (sounds stupid, but I've seen bad ports before that work, yet don't).
Check the BIOS to see if USB is configured
Flash the BIOS (this is the 3rd time I've recommended flashing BIOS today, but its often overlooked)
Try every driver you can find for it, even older ones. I've even used drivers for SIMILAR devices to find that one will work.(often its just a few lines of code that makes a driver work for one device and not another)
Try it on another PC if ones handy (just install the driver temporarily). Try to rule out if its your mobo/BIOS/Windows config

Good luck

I'm left with 2 issues:

1. Device manager still shows one "Unknown Device".
Device Details show hardware IDs of ACPI/ENE0200 and *ENE0200
What is it and where can I find its driver?

2. I can't locate the cool LAN/WLAN manager utility that came with vista.

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Satellite A500-138 "Unknown Device" in Windows 7

Hi Ami,

Have you checked the device and vendor ID of the unknown device? You can check this in properties of device.
Maybe it?s the Bluetooth adaptor if your notebook is equipped with such one?

Regarding the WLAN tool, I think you mean ?ConfigFree?. You can download it on the Toshiba website. Maybe the Vista version works also on Windows 7.

Good luck! :)

When I first purchased this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817145162

I installed my 250GB WD HDD into it. Plugged the USB into my laptop, and it worked flawlessly!

.. I reboot, go to access my drive and it's not there! I look in device manager and find that it's being picked up as "Unknown Device".

I uninstalled everything USB-related. Rebooted, and volia. There it was. My 250GB.

Worked great for two days.

I hook up my iTunes to my Logitech G15's USB ports, and guess what? I reboot, and my freakin harddrive is gone and it's now unknown device AGAIN!

I tried the same thing I did last time, but it did not work. All I wanted to do was transfer my songs to my itunes... now I can't because I have no external harddrive.

Why is my PC doing this? I have XP Pro.

My laptop specs is in my signature. I can't try it on my new computer, because all I have is a motherboard.

I have SiS 755 chipset (according to CPUZ). My laptop is ABS G4 A45.

Thanks!

Answer:External harddrive is "Unknown Device"

3 Why my computer lists the USB hard drive as "Unknown device" in "Device Manager"?
Because the computer fails to correctly recognizes the USB hard drive. There maybe several possible reasons: 1. The cables are not tightly connected, especially the power cable. For Y-251 and Y-252, the typical symptom is the LED keeping flashing green and red alternatively; for Y-350, listen to the noise of the USB hard drive carefully, if only the noise of the fan is heard, it means power connection is faulty somewhere (maybe inside the enclosure, do not ignore the "white pole" as the connect at this point became loose quite easily if the top cover was fixed with little attention).

Solution: Go to "Control Panel" --> "System" --> "Device Manager", remove the "Unknown device", and detach the USB cable, check the power connection points, then connect the power cable and USB cable again, restart the computer if necessary.

2. Installed driver manually under Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP by mistake.

Solution: Go to "Control Panel" --> "System" --> "Device Manager", remove the "Unknown device", and detach the USB cable, then connect the power cable and USB cable again, restart the computer if necessary.

3. Faulty hard drive /hard drive jumper setting (Y-350 only)

For Y-251/Y-252, try with another hard drive; for Y-350, you can first try different j... Read more

That's a core Windows component. You can try using Windows update or you can possibly just uninstall the device, reboot, and let Windows install the drivers. Aside from that, you will likely need to perform a Repair install (if you have an actual Windows CD) or a Restore.

Hello I`m new here, I searched this forum for something similar to my issue but didn`t find anything.

I have set up an old PC for my daughter for learning and playing reasons (older games).

I couldn`t find any driver for my motherboard for windows 7, so I used vista 32bit instead.

My issue is, that one internal usb-port had not been recognized by system, status is "unknown device, code 43". The chipset driver are installed, everything else too.
My system is:

motherboard: ASUS M2N-MX bios:1004
RAM: 2 GB DDR2
Graphics: NVIDIA 8600GTS PCI-e
cpu: AMD Athlon x64 4050e

all on Windows 7 Enterprise

The funny thing is, that all outside ports are working properly, all internal except of this one (Port_#0005.Hub_#0001) also.
On this board no device is connected, the only usb-device now running is keyboard and mouse.
Coud ther be an issue with windows 7 and usb/power management?

Answer:internal USB port μs "unknown device"

Welcome to SF!

You tried to solve the problem via Windows Update?!
Have you tried uninstalling the device and reinstall it?! If you have not tried,
right click on the device marked as unknown, go to properties and then to the Driver tab. There, click uninstall. If asked if you also want to uninstall the driver, uninstall it. That done, reboot the system. Windows tries to install the device again - I recommend that the PC is connected to the internet during this process.
If in any case the problem persists, download the drivers compatible with Windows Vista here: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

Let us know the results!

If you dicide to go with the Hp drivers download the Chipset & Graphics drivers & save to your desktop

Disable your resident protection (antivirus etc)

Uninstall your graphics driver first & reboot

Then your chipset driver & reboot

Then install chipset driver first & reboot

Then your grapics driver second & reboot

Renable your Resident protection

(When running the installers right click on them & select Run as Administrator)

I have a vista basic toshiba laptop (the one I am using now) and I have "unknown device" listed as one of my 4 usb hubs in device manager and I can't get rid of it even when I delete that one and the other hubs and do a restart in safe mode. I think the problem first occured what I connected a .99 cent usb cable I bought from the dollar store to my printer. I see that they say update your usb drivers on the internet at different sites but I am waiting for my credit card application to be approved to pay for "Driver Detective" on the internet hoping it will fix my usb issue. I did a system recovery and the "unknown Device" is still listed as one of my usb ports with nothing connected. I also get the message that, one of the devices connected has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it, popping up when no usb device is connected to my laptop. I am wondering how to update the usb drivers if the port is labeled "unknown device" in device manager and where I can get free ATI usb driver updates to install and see if that solves my problem. 2 x 1TB Western Digital 5400RPM HDD's

Win 8 Pro 64Bit
BIOS version is A09
This particular "Unknown Device" does not appear with a Windows 7 O/S
If I use Windows 7 and install all the recommended drivers there is no problems, the "Unknown Device" in question does not even appear with Windows 7 running, I have done a clean install of windows 7 and checked every device ID in device manager before installing anything else to see if I could find the one causing the problems in Windows 8 - It is no where to be found

As soon as I Install Windows 8 and check the device manager, then this particular "Unknown Device" appears again, even after installing all Windows 8 recommened drivers it is the only "unknown" left.
I have tried searching the internet using the Hardware Vendor ID and Device ID provided in the details section of the "Unknown Device" but cannot find one useful entry, even using the Vendor and hardware databases has been a waste of time

Here is the Device hardware ID as it appears, three lines in total, but I think only the top one is relevent.

Hi, I'm new to the forum.

I downloaded Avast! 5.0 today. While completing installation, a window popped indicating that my system recognized new hardware and required a driver. I cancelled out of it; continued with installation and completed serial number installation.
On rebooting, the system again recognized new hardware and wanted the drivers.
An annoyance, so I went into device manager and saw that I now had an "unknown device" listing. When I sought more details, it listed the device under Device Instance Id as ROOT\LEGACY_AVAST!_ANTIVIRUS\0000

How do I remove this "Device" and could there be consequences for doing so?

Thanks,

In my new Windows XP installation, I am getting the Unknown Device found" at startup and cannot get rid of it.

I tried letting it find it's own drivers and it did not find any. Next, I put in the CD's that came with my motherboard, video card, and monitor and apparently, it is not part of any of them.

The message they give does not even give a hint about what type of "device" they have supposedly found so it does not really do me any good.

I removed the unknown device through the control panel but it came back.

Is there software somewhere that will identify what Windows is finding?

Hi!
I working in a company with approx 800 computers on hundreds of locations and to often the peripherals such as printers, scanners and keyboard end up in state "Unknown Device" and I have no clue of why!
Some info:
- The are different drivers for the various peripherals
- It is HP computers with PosReady 7 x64 installed on it
- The network is limited so they can only access certain webpages, therefore driver installation from windows update is not working.
- This happens to computers that are heavily used and for those are not.
The "Fix" is sometime to just plug out and in the USB-connector or in case of a printer, just reboot it and sometime you have to reinstall the drivers. After that it works but it comes back again after a while. Happened to ~70 computers so far...
I have no clue how to troubleshoot this? Any ideas how to start troubleshoot ? Where to look? I can't reproduce the problem in a lab!
Thanks!

I checked to see that my adapter was plugged in – It was – Step by step I tried to open the wireless connection – None shown – Tried to do a repair – No dice – Went into Control Panel – Device Manager – Network Adapters – It showed the Linksys adapter – Tried to update driver – The best driver for your device is already installed – At this point in went back to Control Panel – did an uninstall of Linksys wireless adapter – after finishing I restarted the PC – Inserted the Install CD – after install directed to connect the adapter – However double PC display on task bar still states I do not have a connection. I go back to Device Manager – Network adapters – It is not there –However I noticed under other devices that it shows a device that is unknown – I click on properties – Linksys Wireless G Adapter – from there I update driver – Now under Network adapters it shows Linksys Adapter – There is no longer anything under Other Devices – My task bar shows I have signal – Problem solved??? – Temporarily yes! – However every single time I shut down and log back on – I have to repeat all of the above steps – This is getting really annoying and I just don’t know what to do at this point – I am hoping that someone can help me figure out why I only have a problem after Windows does an update!

Answer:Links Wireless "Unknown Device"

First off, don't fool with the fonts to make them so small us old guys can't read them!

Next, how about a paragraph or two, it's almost impossible to read the tiny type, add to that the amorphous blob of text, and it's even worse.

As it sits, laptop will only wake from sleep by moving mouse around for about 2 seconds (and of course power button). Person to use the laptop will use it on battery all day, and be constantly waking it up.
I tried usual approach: I right click on device manager and click run as admin, but in the keyboard properties, the "Change Settings" is greyed out and there is no power management tab.
If keyboard is not an option, can I shorten the amount of work done on mouse to wake up?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Also, I tried setting the User Account Control (UAC) settings to the lowest security level, but it's still greyed out.

I have a new computer running Windows 7. It is functioning well, apart from the firewire card not being recognized. I can see that the BIOS does see the firewire card. Pages on the web offering advice on this kind of problems start their solutions with going
to the device manager and expanding the "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers" node in the device tree. Only I don't have such a node. How can I get the "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers" node to appear in the device manager?
Windows update reports that Windows is up to date.

Answer:No "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers" node in device manager

Hi,

I would like to recommend you download the driver from the official website firstly

http://www.conceptronic.net/Site/desktopdefault.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=420&pc=Ci1394B , then reboot to check if the issue persists.

Please feel free to contact me if you get any update.

Hope it helps!

My Device Manager in Win. Vista is just a medium size blank white window with four tabs at the top: File Action View Help then under those there are a back arrow and a forward arrow grayed out....then on same line to the right are 3 tiny icons: the left icon is "show/hide console tree" the next icon is "help" the last icon is "show/hide console pane" then under those is nothing but a blank white window pane. I can't access any devices, they don't even show them....no + or - signs, nothing.

Answer:Solved: Device Manager in Vista is a "blank" window pane

Answer:Error Message "Class Not Registered" When I try to access Device Manager,

Has this just recently happened? It sounds like there is a registry problem somewhere - if it's recent are you able to use system restore to roll back the system a few days?

Hi guys, I was having trouble getting an old obscure video codec to load so I tried to install it manually and I screwed up, which resulted in a duplicate "Video Codecs" field in the "Sound, video and game controllers" field of Device Manager.

Pic here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/siesee/DropBox?authkey=rHF7PcRz51Q#5245170048843623234

I've found plenty of pages that explain how to remove codecs, but my problem now isn't removing a specific codec, it's removing the duplicate "Video Codecs" entry. If I right click on it, there is no uninstall option like many of the other devices. When view the properties of the duplicated item, it lists no codecs (whereas the codecs appear in the original item), and now when I try to play any kind of video I only get audio (only tried with WMP so far).

Someone had suggested I try Unlocker but that didn't work... that prog doesn't affect the contextual menu in Device Manager.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Troy

Hey all!

I have a wweeeiiird problem. It started with that my screen looked all messed up after booting up (once past the win xp logo, when the video card driver kicks in i suppose). It looked like horisontal lines all over the screen (not moving, frozen...) and i had to restart. Once restarted everything worked fine. This happened a few times (two or three i think). But finally it didnt help to restart, so i started up in safe mode and uninstalled my video card. I actually removed the card (ati radeon 9800 pro) and put in my old one (3d prophet 4500) just to be sure nothing happened to my expencive radon card. Then it worked booting up normally. XP found the card and tried to install it. It didnt work properly, it said. So I had a look in the device manager. There I found that the AGP bridge to pci or something had one of those yellow bad-signs on it. Two other devices (also under "system devices") named "PCI Standard PCI-to-PCI bridge" had the same yellow sign. Looking under properties it says this:

"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."

I uninstalled the AGP bridge (whatever that one was called) so that one isnt in the list of system devices any more. Now its just two of the other type I mentioned above.

I've tried to find info about this problem by surfing around, but I haven't found a... Read more

Answer:Can't install ANY video card driver, it says "not enough resources" in device manager

Hey man

Hey...

Lol, this comes from runnig a Ati card on a Nvidia nForce chipset! no just kidding ...
Anyway seems like you screwed windows up beyond recognition :blackeye: ....]
There is an easy solution and a difficult one..
The easiest way to fix your problem and establish if you don't have any other combinations of problems is:
1) Find a loan hard drive to reinstall a fresh copy of windows with your new display card inside, or plunge right into it and reinstall windows on your current HD... remember to install the nForce drivers before anything else. While you at it remove any other pci cards that might be the cause of your problems.
2) If your PC crashes during the reinstallation you definately have a hardware problem, try your original display card again.
3) If you have two ram modules, remove one, test, swop them, test.
4) If your problem persists after this I recommend testing the card on another pc... if available. It could be a faulty display card...
5) I presume your pc worked fine before the new display cards installation.
6) If the display card works on another pc you have a compatibility issue (very nasty) on your hands, take it to a pc vendor near you to sort it out.

Good luck!....

Hi,

#1 thanks for y'all's help and expertise.

Here is my question: I have Vista 32-bit operating system with an original-equipment ViXS PureTV-U 48B0 (NTSC/ATSC Combo) TV Tuner. The computer itself is a m9100z HP Pavilion. Every time I restart my computer, the TV Tuner card will toggle whether or not it is visible/installed/whatever in the device manager. If the card is working, once I restart, it will not work or appear in the device manager, and vice versa. The only way I have found to fix it is to restart again.

Any suggestions?

I Just downgraded my computer from windows 10 to windows 8.1 and when i go to device manager it says microsoft basic display adapter but my computer's graphics card name is Ati Mobillity Radeon x1300. Can Someone please give me a Ati mobillity radeon x1300 driver download for windows 8.1? Thanks!

Answer:Device Manager Saying "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter"

Doubt you will find a 8.1 or 10 driver for a display chip that old.

EDIT: You can try Vista or 7 drivers in compatibility mode as described here: Radeon x1300 and windows 8 - Microsoft Community

OK, hate to be a noob here, but I've a system here that simply will not show the Non Plug and Play Drivers category. XP SP3

It's actually one of several I've run across with this issue over the last few weeks, and have not been able to resolve it. All systems were XP SP3 as best as I recall...

Of course, I fire up a command prompt and type
Code:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
devmgmt.msc
then when device manager starts up, I select show hidden devices... I'm also being sure to leave the command prompt open after I open the device manager.

I know that the set devmgr... bit is working, because I can see missing devices under "other devices" that I cannot see when I do NOT do the set devmgr... bit first.

The PC I am seeing this on right now did have the zero access rootkit on it, but was removed. Not sure if this is some component of the malware that disables the ability to view these devices in an attempt to hinder removal attempts... I haven't read anything on the subject in various whitepapers on zero access, however...

My Google-fu must be lacking, because I cannot seem to find any info on this issue. I found one article with no resolution that mentioned it could be a corrupted/missing component of device manager (the article was also about XP Embedded so I didn't expect much anyway)... every other result I can find only mentions how to view the category with the set devmgr... bit, but none mention... Hello,

I am trying to install a driver for the Epson perfection 1200U on my grandpa's new windows 8 PC. Problem is that the scanner is too old and epson doesnt provide a driver for this scanner for windows 8. But I found a how to guide on this and the instructions are great, and it seems to work for everyone else but I cant figure out how to uncheck "show compatible hardware" in device manager when you are trying to update drivers on a specific device.

I get there by right clicking on the device, selecting properties, "browse my computer for driver software," then "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer," then after that the window that appears does not have an option to uncheck "show compatible hardware." And so I can't continue

Today I fixed a Graphics Card Driver issue (with the help of a thread here on this site)

Now I just have one exclamation mark left in Device Manager on my laptop.

Full details of my set up is in my profile, but in short:

Acer Aspire 8935g
Win 7 Home Premium 64bit

The "Mass Storage Controller" has the exclamation mark and more detil is...:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

Of course, there are no other issues, no other exclamation marks at all.

So what is this Mass Storage Controller and which driver do I need to install??

A bit for info:

PCI Bus 2, device 0, function 2

I have no idea what THAT means, except it is probably to do with where the device is physically connected (?) - does that help anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks very much in advance for any sugggestions.

Answer:Device Manager, Other Devices, "Mass Storage Controller"

Greetings; my first post.
Had Vista Ultimate; scraped it and loaded Win7 Prof. Awesome OS so far. Installed peripherals, no problem. Printer installed fine, works fine. Wanted to share it on home network. Attempted to load Canon MP970 onto network and rec'd install error with missing driver. Windows found driver at Intel (IPMI & PCI Serial Port), it downloaded but failed to install. I still see the warning icon by Other Devices and cannot identify the devices. I've attached screen shots of the sequence and Intel driver download name. The attachment is in 7-Zip format. What are these devices. How can I update the drivers for these unknown devices? Everything else works fine.

Thank you.

Answer:New Win7 Install; Device Manager "Other Devices" drivers not found problem

The fact that W7 had no drivers for the unknown devices during installation is going to be problematic, most likely it means there are no compatible drivers available.

You might have noticed that the old 'Add Legacy Hardware' option seems to be missing. I tend to use this quite a bit whenever I need to add in a Loopback adapter or some piece of hardware that is not quite installing correctly. With that said, thankfully, you can still manually launch the 'Add Legacy Hardware' Control Panel applet by using hdwwiz.exe.http://blog.tiensivu.com/aaron/ ** https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/Aaron.Tiensivu

HELP!

I had to delete everything off my harddrive and reinstall windows and now I cant get online.

I'm trying to connect through a 2 wire wireless modem to a 2701 HG-B router. I know that everything is ok with the router as my other computer works fine. When I plug the ethernet cable into the back of the computer and to the router itself, it still will not go online...

I called AT & T and was on with them for a while, but they finally had me go to my device manager and said since I dont have anything showing Network in the list, i had to install that first before i can connect to the internet. I have no idea how to do that...can anyone help?

Hey everyone-

I'm doing some spring cleaning of sorts on my laptop, updating drivers, etc... I'm using a Dell Latitude D610 with XP SP2.

When I'm at work I use a docking station connected to a Dell Flat Panel monitor (model 1707FPt) and I wanted to install the driver files for it. So before that I checked the device manager to see if it was already in there and what I see are four identical entries all labeled "Default Monitor".

From what I can tell they're all identical - double-clicking any give me the following info:
General:
- Device Type: Monitors
- Manufacturer: (Standard monitor types)
- Location: on ATI MOBILITY RADEON X300

Driver:
- Driver Provider: Microsoft
- Driver Date: 6/6/2001
- Driver Version: 5.1.2001.0
- Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Publisher

I'm guessing I've provided excess information for a likely simply question: can I remove 3 of these entries without any issues and, if so, does it matter which 3?

The only monitors I use are the actual laptop screen and this Dell Flat Panel at work. The main purpose behind this is that my monitor at work has 2 USB ports on the side I'd like to use, but they don't work now and I'm guessing it's because I haven't installed the drivers for this specific monitor.

I got this laptop several years ago from costco. The Dell Inspiron N5010

It listed a nice video card. When it was delivered I think they said they were out of that vidcard but gave me another equivalent. I forget the details now tho.

For the longest time, the video card driver was listed as "ATI Radeon HD 4650"

Just recently I had some BSOD issues of the Display timeout type. One of the things I tried to fix the issue was to check for device driver. But windows said that everything was fine and updated.

One of the last things I tried with it was to disable the video card device driver (Radeon 4650)
Then Try looking for updates again.

When I did this, the system CHAGED DRIVERS on me. It changed to Radeon 550v. This sounded VERY familiar! Like I think this was the original card that was supposed to be there. Or else it was the one they switched to. THe details are cloudy but I remember this name.

So which card do I have? DO I trust what WIndows just did?

Answer:Device manager "Changed" my video card

Why would you disable the Display device to find another driver? You'd want to Update driver to do that, or uninstall at the most to force a reinstall of the existing driver.

Re-enable the device you disabled and now what devices are listed under Display? From view Tab in Device Manager, unhide any devices.

Enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) then check for Updates, install all Important and Optional Updates except Bing. Look for drivers but also install all patches because these may be needed to make your devices work correctly.

To confirm the actual device make/model trace it's Hardware Identification. Once you have the true make/model device, go to your PC's Support Download webpage to look for the latest version of that driver in case it is modded by manufacturer for you laptop. If not, you can try the device maker's latest driver from its Support Downloads webpage.

Hi,

I have a Dell PowerEdge T620 Server and since it does not come with USB 3.0, I decided to upgrade. I bought a USB 3.0 PCI-e card and installed it. The card showed up in the device manager. After I installed the driver, it was recognized and everything looked fine.

When I plug in my external USB hard drive, the light on the drive goes on, signalling that it gets power, but the drive will not show up under "my computer"?! I remember seeing something briefly, when the computer booted for the first time after I had the card installed, and It said something about the PCI configuration having been changed?! Does this mean I have to "enable" the card somewhere?! Maybe in the BIOS?!

Anyhow, I tried different slots in on the Motherboard, but the result is the same: I plug my external drive in, a message pops up that the hardware has been installed fine, but I cannot see the drive!

thanks,

G

p.s. this is the card I bought: Amazon.com : Anker? USB 3.0 PCI-E Card with 4 USB 3.0 Ports and 15-Pin Power Connector for Desktops (AI410) : Computer Usb Port Cards : Computers & Accessories

p.p.s. The external drive works fine with the "standard" USB connectors.

Right click the Code 41 device and Uninstall it. Remove the USB mouse. Restart the computer. Plug the mouse into the Back USB port of the computer not the front or through Hub as these are weaker ports. If you still get the Code 41 then see if the mouse manufacturer has an updated driver on their site. If not, try the mouse on another computer. If that fails, then the mouse has probably failed.

Hello

I am trying to connect with "Administrative Tools>Computer Management" on a remote Vista (Enterprise) machine, the connection is established successfully but when i try to enter on "Device Manager" it fails with the error:
Unable to access the computer AVISTA.
Make sure that this computer is on the network, has remote administration enabled, and is running the "Plug and Play" and "Remote Registry" services.
The error was: Access is Denied.

Both services are running, connected with valid credentials.

Configuration:
- machine 1 (that starts the connection with Computer Management) I tried with Windows 2000 server SP4, Windows XP, SP1, SP2, Windows Vista Enterprise, etc.
- machine 2 (that I am connecting to from machine 1 ) is Windows Vista Enterprise.
- connection is local ethernet, SMB connection works, browsing the HKLM on machine 2 with registry connection works, even "Administrative Tools>Computer Management" connection works because i can see the NT services on the remote machine.
Everything works but "Device Manager" ... wich is very important to me
I would gladly appreciate any advice. Thanks.

New SSD (running Windows 7) appears as "Disk drive" in device manager, while other drives appear as their product numbers (ST..., WDC...). It's a Crucial BX100 SSD. Can this cause any problems? Is it ok to leave as is? Appears the SSD is already upgraded to the newest firmware.

This is a clone from an HDD, by the way, using Clonezilla.

Another question: do I need to change any Windows 7 options/install any other drives to ensure the system handles to SSD correctly?

hi all. I have recently upgraded my old advent 5471 laptop from windows ME to
windows XP SP2. The battery worked fine with ME but with XP it it behaves
very strangely. it will charge for a while and then stop and say there is no
battery and run just on mains. if i unplug the ac adaptor it cuts off. yet if
i start the laptop from the battery it starts perfectly but says it is
running on AC power. the battery is not even listed in device manager. one
other thing, on my other laptop, in device manager it is recognised as a
multiprocessor pc (or somethig like that), but the advent is seen as a standard
pc. i have tried to change this but was unsucessful. i have also tried to
install xp while running on battery only but again it was seen as a standard
pc.
has anyone had this problem before or have any advice??

thanks in advance.

regards paul.

More information from previous post. I have discovered that my device manager is empty. This started after I attempted to uninstall Windows Media Player. I was given the optoin to instead go back to wmp 10. This caused the problem and xp required a reactivation. I did so, but I still can't get on line, which is causing me to not be able to fix any other problems. If someone could tell me how to restore all my drivers in device manager it shoudl help, although I don't know why it hasn't effected everything.

What are they used for? Is it safe to disable these in "Device Manager" ?

* High precision event timer (if you don't use it, if it is disabled in BIOS)
* Programmable interrupt controller
* System timer
Link for tutorial: Ultimate Windows 7 (8) OS gaming optimization guide (advanced but simple)

System Devices: (ONLY FOR SOME AMD SYSTEMS)
Under "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System" (or right click on Computer, select Properties), go to the "Device Manager" then expand "System devices". Depending on hardware configuration this can be very helpful to get constant latency and perfect smooth gameplay. Devices that should be disabled (if something goes wrong hit F8 at windows boot, select "Last known good configuration").
DISABLED (select View, click "Show hidden devices"):
* High precision event timer (if you don't use it, if it is disabled in BIOS)
* Programmable interrupt controller
* System timer
For some systems, HPET do not have any influence, however, on some systems when HPET is disabled, it is better, test it.

Answer:Is there a problem disable these things in "Device Manager" ?

You should use http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon before and after applying those settings.
It depends on hardware/software, but it can solve micro stutter and in other cases, it can cause it.

Answer:T440p - Unknown device - USB ports not working

I was found solution. Just wrong path to location where drivers must be found. In Device Manager right click the device or the unknown device to update drivers.Point to ?C:\Windows\winsxs? when it asks for the driver location. That's all.

Did a clean install yesterday on a hard drive that was empty.

Today, I noticed 3 items as problematic in Device Manager.

* Ethernet Controller (windows can't find driver)

* SM Bus Controller (no driver)

* Universal Serial Bus Controller (no driver)

Never saw this on any of my several computers and I have no do idea what it is all about.

Anyone have ideas?

Thanks

Because I have only an external Zoom 56K faxmodem, I recently "removed" an entry labeled "56Modem" -- no "k" -- from Device Manager. Since then, at every boot-up, Win98SE claims it has detected new hardware "56Modem" and no amount of searching ever produces an acceptable driver. I've verified that "56Modem" no longer exists anyplace in Device Manager. Searched the registry and found no entries fo text "56Modem" -- but, using FIND, the text "56Modem" was found in Windows\System.ns0, Windows\Whinfo.dat, and Windows\System.dat; also in Windows\Inf\Drvidx.bin and Windows\Inf\Other\MicrosoftZoomsrwv.inf. A view of the last file lists "56Modem" as a Zoom-supported (or recognized) product. I'm hoping someone with a similar setup can tell me how to permanently delete "56Modem" from my system or locate a driver to install during the bootup process. Sure will appreciate your help!

Answer:Zoom "56Modem" in Device Manager

Just follow the prompts. When it says it can't find the driver, tell it ok. It will then add the 56modem to Other Devices and leave you alone.

It just isn't there, and as a result, my CD drives don't seem to be working, although my BIOS seems to detect them well enough. Help?

Answer:No "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" category in Device Manager.

Do you think it would help to give a few clues about the system? See below.I am assuming you have not added any new hardware or played about in the BIOS. If that is not the case, please tell us what you did.We answer this question at least weekly. Hello,

Looking at Device Manager, I have the following two items with that yellow "!" mark.
Might anyone tell me how significant these are, and what they exactly pertain to ?
How do I correct ? Should I bother ?

a. Driver: Virtual WiFi Miniport Driver

b. Toredo Tunneling Pseudo Interface (MS Network Adapter)

BTW: My internet and wifi seems to work fine.

Thanks,
Bob

If your internet works fine, then it isn't a big deal. It only becomes a big deal if you experience instability. Double click on each device with the yellow icon and post a screenshot with the snipping tool.
