Resizing Hard-drive To Clone To 250gb Ssd

Question: Resizing Hard-drive To Clone To 250gb Ssd

Greetings,
I have been helping neighbour with their Lenovo-b50-80. It originally came with Windows 8.1 and I have upgraded it to Windows 10 and after a few hiccups is working perfectly.
The next stage of upgrading this laptop is to clone the 500GB original drive to a 250GB Samsung SSD using Aomei Backupper Standard 3.2 and Aomei Partition Assistant 6.0

When I go to Disk Management I find that the disk has 6 partitions. Most of which are probably linked to recovering the OS back to Win 8.1
I would like to get rid of all unessential disk space and so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.
At this moment all the files including Windows.old are located on the C: drive.
Many thanks,
s.

Preferred Solution: Resizing Hard-drive To Clone To 250gb Ssd

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I found https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/documents/ht077144. Towards the end of the page is this image;

Which is 2 partitions short of the Lenovo in #1. The 2 missing 1. Lenovo D: drive NTFS partition and 2. 1000MB partition.
Maybe I should keep them all...

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

Hey guys, kinda new here, hopefully I'm posting this in the right forum section.
I'm not that super oriented with computers, I'll give it my best shot to explain what's going on here.
In short my PC just won't start. The light turns on, it boots up, and then I get a black screen with text referring to either "Start Up Repair (recommended)"
or
"Start windows normally"
If I choose start windows normally, it brings me to the black booting screen with the windows flag, then it proceeds to go back and restart the system, going back to the black screen. OR More likely it just stays stuck on the glowing windows flag.
This also occurs if I press F8 and go into safe mode. After listing all the components before going into safe mode, it simply restarts itself and goes right back to the black screen of the two choices.
If I select Start up repair, a grey loading bar appears below that on occasion freezes. If I manually reset the computer try it again, I get to a blue windows default background screen and the message
"Startup Repair
Your computer was unable to start
Startup repair is checking your system for problems...
If problems are found, Startup Repair will fix them automatically. Your computer might restart several times during this process.
No changes will be made to your personal files or information. This might take several minutes.

Answer:Windows 7 won't boot past possible broken Hard drive attempting to recover/clone/copy hard drive

It sounds to me as if your Operating System has been damaged beyond repair, and that you only option would be to re-install your system using the 'Return to Factory Settings' facility provided. Unfortunately, this would mean you would lose all you data, and, from what I can tell from your posting, you have not taken a back-up so you cannot repair your PC at present.
You first need to remove your heard drive and connect it to a working PC either as slave or in a caddy, and use this to copy all your data onto a new external device.
OR
Once connected to another device, you could partition your Hard drive and copy your data into a second partition.
Once you have your data copied, return the HHD to your own PC and re-install your system from scratch.

Hey guys (and ladies).

Although there are many forums with this topic laid out, I have tried everything by the book and have no luck. Here's the problem:

I have a 4 drive setup:
-60Gb SSD (Windows 7 Ult x64 + some programs) (c)
-30Gb SSD (i)
-1Tb HDD (h)
-250Gb HDD (empty reserved for Win) (f)

As the 60Gb SSD drive is full I want to migrate the whole drive to the empty 250Gb HDD. Of course, no need to say that I want everything to run afterwards without any re-installs (also the files on i and h)

I have tried many clone softwares (Paragon, EaseUS ToDo etc) and the clone goes ok, but it wont boot from the destination drive. Luckily enough I still have the original c drive otherwise I would be stuck!
I also looked at the Windows backup and restore, but by default it want to clone all my drives and I cant deselect them (over a Tb of a backup??)

Now what can I do to get this sorted? I just want contents of the 60Gb SSD (with Win7) on the empty 250Gb HDD.
Any ideas of a program that DOES work?
Also, when cloned, the new drive is not 'c' anymore.
How would all programs/files work?
Or is the idea that you delete the original drive and then rename the copy to 'c'?

I probably do something wrong, but a clean install would take days (as webdesigner I use loads of software and not looking forward to reinstall all those)

Thanks a ton for a possible solution!!

Answer:Clone 60Gb SSD to 250Gb HDD - not working so far

Did you check the boot order or sequence on bios after the clone process? And second, you need to clone from outside windows using the bootable version of Paragon, EaseUS, Acronis, etc.

Hi all, hopefully someone can help?Approx 2 years ago i bought a Medion portable hard drive from my local Aldi. Everything has been fine until today when the connection seems loose. If i connect the hard drive to the cable and plug it into my laptop the hard drive turns on, but the laptop doesn't recognise it, and says its malfunctioned. How do i go about fixing it if at all, and have i lost everything on my portable hard drive. Many thanks,Chris

Answer:Medion 250gb Hard Drive

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated. http://www.vatgia.com/pictures_fullsize/tut1254386189.jpg

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Answer:PC won't format 250GB hard drive

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

i recently bought an internal seagate 250gb hard drive and when i installed it it is only finding 232gb i was wondering how i can access the other 18gbs if that is possible. i have seen the 137gb barrier but not something like this. all help would be appreciated.

Answer:250gb hard drive not full 250

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

The old hard drive is from an xp laptop, and I can aquire another xp laptop if I can clone this way. Perhaps if I set the enclosure hard drive as master? All ideas are greatly appreciated. I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didnít recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldnít work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldnít).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I havenít given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether itís fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, I just built my own custom computer with a little from my friends. And we got it all running and working now, however Windows XP Pro is only detecting the 250GB as 130GB, and this is even when we "formated," and partitioned with Windows XP Pro.

Its not the Hard drive, because we built 2 of the exact same (1 for me and 1 for my bro) however its happening on both machines.

Any help, without wipping the currect data on them? (We've already transfered the data from our laptops to the new computers with our 5pc network)

Hi there, I've got a 250gb maxtor HD and it can't be detected in bios or something is wrong. WHENEVER its connected (either on its own or with another drive), it says "error loading OS".
(PC boots fine with my other Maxtor 120gb HD)

On some sites it says to set Bios HD Access to LARGE instead of auto/lba etc

BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Dom

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

Hi,

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here: http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/specs.asp?ID=1971

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8004679&type=product&id=1155848396138

Thanks so much,

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. Now when i try to plug it back into her Asus, it doesn't recognise it and when "Computer" is opened the hard drive is displayed as "Local Disk (G". I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

Thanks

try vista disc management if you can see it there change drive letter, or try in safe mode, ie connect drive with comp off then re boot into safe mode

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Answer:Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

Hi

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

I'm not sure if the hard drive is failing, its an older IDE drive. I just formatted the drive and disk manager only shows it with 26.9GB and no other unallocated space. Is there any way to reclaim the lost space or is this a typical sign of a drive on its last legs?

I recently upgrade my PC, and have installed a NEW 250 GB S-ATA Hard drive.
My bios has been upgraded, and when in the BIOS setup it recognizes the drive as what it should be, 250GB, When I was installing XP and creation a partition thru the intall progam it only let me setup a 131GB partition. I set up a 100GB partition and left the rest to play with afterwards. In the Computer management/disk manager in XP I have my 100GB partition and only 30GB of unallocated space to work with.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Shamus

Answer:250GB Hard drive, Windows only allows 131GB partitionable

Since this was a fresh install you need to add SP2. XP came out with a 137G limitation which was addressed with SP1. SP2 has replaced SP1.

If you only want a single 250G partition there are a couple of ways to address it.

1) Install SP2 and then run Partition Magic to resize the primary partition to pick up the extra 150G.

or
2) Slipstream SP2 into your copy of XP and then start over from scratch with a fresh install.

There is in regards to my SimpleTech portable hard drive and My new Dell Inspiron N7010 17R which has windows 7. It tells me that it can not recognize the device when I plug it into my USB port. I'd like to get a 250GB SSD in my T450s when I order it, but Lenovo is charging $280 for the upgrade. So I'm thinking to order a T450s with a conventional 500GB spinning hard drive and buy a Crucial 256GB SSD elsewhere for $105. I would save $175 plus have a 500GB hard drive which I could erase and format and put into an external enclosure and use for other stuff. My question is -- I'm going to order the T450s with the Windows 7 Professional installation, so can I easily swap out the 500GB hard drive for the Crucial 256GB SSD (I'm ordering from elsewhere), and reinstall/recover Windows 7 Pro from recovery discs? I'm assuming that recovery discs are included or can be downloaded. Or, could I restore to the Crucial 256GB SSD from the recovery partition on the 500GB hard drive? How would I do this?

Answer:Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Download and install Macrium Reflect.  There's a free version that makes clones.  Clone the factory drive to the SSD, then swap it out.  You don't get recovery disks.   The recovery software, though, has the option of creating a recovery disk set from the recovery partition that is installed on the drive.  So, you could burn the disks and put them away as your recovery solution.  When you clone the factory drive, you have the option of selecting which partions to include on the cloned drive.  If you've burned the disks first, you can simply not select the recovery partition (which is typically lettered "Q") and just clone the system reserved and Windows partitions and save yourself the disk space on the SSD. Once you've got it set up to your satisfaction, and you have the disks, then format the factory drive to use for your other purposes.

I have a 1TB hard drive that I am only using 30GB on and want to clone that to a 500GB hard drive. I have tried using Drive Image XML but it tells me that I have to get a bigger drive in order for it to work. My question is this, is there a program (free) that can clone a bigger hard drive to a smaller one?I might be answering my question here but I wonder could I image the drive and the restore the image from that one to another one? There has to be a way to do it.uByte

Answer:Clone Bigger Hard drive to smaller hard drive

The verdict is still out. I tried to image the drive and restore it to the smaller one and it gave me the same message. I wonder if I resized the partition of the bigger one to make it smaller then tried to copy it. That might work.

If anyone has done this before let me know.

Answer:Resizing hard drive partitions

It is not difficult to do and 99.9% of the time it will work just fine, but you must be prepared for things to go pear shaped. I wouldn't attempt this before a full backup and I would want to have the original OS & manufacturer driver CD's (mobo, video, soundcard etc.) available just in case.Commercial untilities like Partition Magic will do this. I use Partition Magic regularly and have never had a problem with data loss. There are similar freeware & shareware utilities available too.click here

Hello, I have a problem resizing NTFS partitions on my external hard drive. First I tried to shrink one of the partitions using the Disk Manager utility in Windows 7 (I thought that I can resize the other one to the unallocated space using the 'expand' functionality), and later also tried EASEUS Partition Master. Both seem to have trouble with the first step, which is reduction of the space on the first partition (700 GB -> 250 GB), as both programs simply get stuck. (I let it run for 4 hours before giving up). I also tried runnig checkdisk to see if some sectors of the partition are not damaged, but it didn't help. I would really appreciate any hint as to how to solve this problem, or a recommendation about which alternative software to try. Thank you.

I purchased a T61p with a 160GB drive.  I used another computer with Acronis to copy my image to a larger 320GB drive.  It would not boot.  I read the information from the forum, used Pagagon to image the drive sector by sector with the new drive installed in the computer and booting with the Paragon boot CD.  I have a hard drive that boots and has the ThinkVantage feature, but I can not resize the Preload drive to take advantage of the larger drive.  I played around with it and lost the ability to boot.  I have the virgin drive that I can copy from and start over again.  It takes along time to make the updates and setting.  I would like to have a successful copy and use both the additional size of the drive and use ThinkVantage feature.  The new drive allocation is the NTFS Preload first, next hidden lenovo 32bit partition, and next unallocated area last. I have resized my IBM Z770 and my Compaq several times.  It is very fast and easy with Acronis.  I would appreciate your help.  Please don't just post it solved.  because I have search and read all the hard drive posting in T and W forums.  T61p 64608VU  15.4" NVIDIA 256 T7700 2.4 G 160GB(7200) 2X1024 Chipset Intel PM965 ExpressNvidia Quadro FX570M 256MB

Hello, bit of a long one but need some expert advice from you guys.

I recently purchased the above laptop with a 250GB hard drive. It came preinstalled with 3 partitions as follows:

1.5GB: Hidden Toshiba System Recovery partition
116GB: (C:) Windows Vista system partition
116GB: (E) Toshiba System Recovery Image Folder

From my understanding of briefly going over these forums, the Hidden partition houses the mini operating system that controls the actual recovery of Windows and the Image folder contains the data that is extracted and installed to the C: ??? If I am wrong please let me know!!

Anywyay, the problem I have is that I would rather have all available space mapped to the C: rather than on the E:. I have tried using the Disk Management utility to shrink and then expand the partitions but it won't let me expand the C: (I guess as it is the system partition maybe?). I also tried using the Diskpart.exe program but to no avail.

The plan I have is to create the two DVD recovery disks from the utility from the desktop icon.

Copy all the recovery data from E: (About 5GB worth) off the laptop temporarily.

Manually using a 3rd party disk partition utility, delete C: and E: and then set the partitions as C: = 224GB and E: = 6GB.

Using the recovery DVD's, restore Windows Vista to the C:.

Copy all the recovery data back onto E: to practially fill it up and keep it for any future restores from the HDD rather than the DVD's.

I have ease us partition master 11.0 installed and have as previously mentioned in the past I used it to make my partion's.
All well thus far.

Last weekend I made a full backup of my ssd (cloned it) using said hdd and said software

All reported as went well. Took approx 9 hours to complete.

Disk boot up fine to the master main operating system all shortcuts appear find and operate perfectly.

However if I go to any of the other partions I get the preparing your desktop message for a while. Then a load of pop up box's reporting this and that dll missing. Eventually a msg saying I can use a virtual desktop.

Then I will see my softwares on my desktop I would like to access but there icons are incomplete and the shortcuts fail to work....

My question is... why is it falling to clone 1 on 1 and is this because I'm going from ssd to hdd?

And of course how can I fix this???

What you'll have to do is re-install XP onto the new drive (40GB) using the XP installation disk. Cloning the XP disk from the old 5GB drive onto the 40GB drive and expecting it to work on the new PC wont work. XP must be running like treacle with only 128 MB of RAM.

Just received a new M58E A7303G8U from IBM on line.  Still in warranty but I thought I'd try here first. Instead of "backing up" I always clone my hard drive, on my three ThinkPads and a home built.  This new one has a Seagate 160 Gig SATA drive.  I purchased a new identical drive, placed into the USB2 case, ran the Seagate Disk Wizard (exactly like my other PCs for over two years), Disk Wizard found the drive, locked the C: drive, requested a reboot to clone, rebooted, got the IBM splash screen, got the "Starting Windows screen, and the machine froze at a black screen.  Twice.  To recover from this I have to hard power off, start in Safe Mode and choose Last known good config.  Then it starts normally. The only difference in this machine and all the others is the SATA drive.  All my others have IDE drives. As I said, I've been doing this on all my PCs for years.  This is the first one that won't. Any thoughts? Wayne

I have used Ghost before to do something similar. However, if you are ghosting a non-RAID install to a RAID array, you will have issues when you try to boot. I would probably ghost the old drive to one of the new drives, and then set up the RAID array afterwards, assuming your controller can do that.

Answer:Clone Hard Drive

You can save a Win7 backup image externally so that if Win7 ever fails beyond repair, you can reimage the HD or its replacement in 20 minutes from the DVD and backed-up image: Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup. Another popular app is free Macrium - Image your system which I believe can also clone.

If you have WD or Seagate HD in the mix, they offer Acronis' free Premium imaging and cloning app which is perhaps the best option of all.

This is what I recommend (easiest way): Get a Hiren's boot disk (PM me if you can't find one...), and use the Norton Ghost utility in there (it's an older version, and much easier IMO than t he newer one). You can do a Local, direct disk to disk copy, and use the new drive as the boot drive. Done it tons of times, swapping out drives myself.

Hello folks. I have an X40 with about 15GB allocated to the C and perhaps 5 GB allocated to the recovery partition (these are estimates), WXP Pro SP3.  The machine is constantly running out of space. So I found a replacement 40GB hard drive in Hong Kong.  It is a Hitachi Travelstar model HTC426040G9AT00, Lenovo P/N 39T2690. Now, I could just install this drive and reinstall WXPP from CD.  But I am stubborn and don't want to do that.  I want to preserve the utility partition.  And I want to learn how to clone a drive, as I have never done that before. I have been trying for weeks to clone the old drive to this new drive.  I have been usingSymantec Norton Ghost v2003.775 to do this.  Finally it appeared successful and so I went to boot up on the new drive and the OS just hangs in a blank screen. So I booted to the WXPP SP3 CD and ran a fixmbr and fixboot but that made no difference. I am out of known options so I ask you folks:How can I go about cloning both partitions on the original 20GB drive to this replacement 40GB drive? Thanks so much.

Answer:Would Like To Clone Hard Drive On X40

Have a read of my post here regarding cloning a T42. I'm very confident the method will work on your X40.

Hope this helps

I want to backup my hard drive at work to another internal hard drive that can be used to boot in place of the original hard drive in case of drive failure. I would rather have something "ready to go" just by swapping drives without worrying about restoring data to a new drive.

What's the best way to do this?
Also, what's the best software to use for this?

My Gateway computer that I bought from Circuit City does not have RAID as far as I know, just one hard drive, 160 GB 3.5" IDE. I purchased an external USB hard drive before, but I don't think I can run off of it like an internal HD.

Thanks,

NS

Why is it so hard to find decent software to clone my hard drive? All versions of Ghost were awesome! It would go right into DOS and make an exact copy of your drive no issues. Ghost 12 will not enter DOS to do this even thow it says it will. Is it really that difficult to make cloning software?

Answer:All I want is to clone my hard drive????

Acronis True Image works very well.

I am going to put in a new SATA Hard Drive but I don't want to have to install everything again  and then fix every setting in every program again. So I was going to try to Clone my master hard drive onto a Secondary hard drive and then when that is doen just put the Secondary hard drive in the Primarys place.I now this would work but I have Win XP PRO and I did not want to buy a program just for this. Can I use win xp pro to Clone my Hard Drive??I know win xp has  FAST Program I can use but I don't think that will clone. Thanks

Answer:Clone Hard Drive HELP

To clone a drive you will need a 3rd party tool. Windows doesn't come with a clone tool built into it.They do have many vendors out there that can do this but you will have to buy the program. Unless someone knows of a free one I would look at Partition Manager. Its around 40.00 and works great.http://www.partition-manager.com/?gclid=CMD71rW0q5ECFQwZgQodH1inYg

Question: Hard Drive clone

When attempting to clone an 80 Gig hard drive onto a 500 Gig hard drive, the larger drive only shows 80 gigs . This has happened with a number of cloning programs. HELP!

Answer:Hard Drive clone

Im no expert, but i assume you have cloned the 80gig onto the larger, and its created a partition on the larger. So in effect have exactly the same drive size recognisable as you cloned it.

What i mean is, your new drive will have 2 partitions, the one you can see, which is your 80gig old drive, and then an unformated partition of roughly 320 gig.

You could perhaps use a partition managing program to extend your useable partition into the unformatted space, thus formatting and includin it, if that is indeed your problem. However most of these partition managers and cloning applications etc i have always found to be much less effective while inside windows, if it is an option, you could maybe consider using a drive utility disk from your drive manufacturer.

Hi thereI have put on Paragon Drive copy 8 and I am trying to clone my Vista Home premium to a bigger HD.I have put in a blank formatted 160GB HD as the drive to be cloned to, but when I try it comes up in red and says its invalid.Have reformatted it again, NTFS, but same problem. Any ideas please?KJR

Answer:Trying to clone a Hard drive

.I'm not familiar with Paragon Drive Copy 8, but perhaps the partition or hard drive you are trying to clone to needs to be unformatted. Try deleting the partition on the new hard drive and then try to clone to it again.By the way, have you taken a complete image backup of the old drive just in case something goes wrong while you are trying to clone it?Peter.

I've got a hard drive which wasn't booting any longer. It definately has bad sectors and I've used Recovery Console and got it to boot again. I am replacing it with a 320GB SATA drive. The drive going bad is a 200GB IDE.

Now, I am using HDClone 3.1 and it's fantastic so far. It looks as though it has come across 273 read erros thus far. This is only at 15% complete and according to HDClone, it has about 9 hours left on the clone.

Will the 273 read errors have a huge affect on the new drive? I did get Windows to boot again after the recovery and it seemed stable even though I didn't push the drive and tried to write to it much in fear it would crash again.

When the clone is complete, how can I make sure everything is in order? Do I just use all software installed and go from there? If there are problems, can I simply uninstall and install again the software not working? If windows is not booting, can I now use recovery console again as the new drive should have no bad sectors?

I know, lots of questions, however, I've not been through this and just want to prepare!

Thanks for the help!

Answer:Bad Hard Drive + Clone!

If the os is unstable ...do a repair install to the new drive ...and yes you may find some programs unstable ...and may need to remove and reinstall.
Run CCleaner for any lingering issues.

Question: Clone hard drive

I am trying to upgrade my 32gb SSD to a 2TB HD with no luck and it is driving me nuts...!!
I have 2 hard drives currently the 32 SSD and a 500GB. I've taken out the 500GB and put in the 2TB which I am trying to copy the 32gb SSD to but everytime I use some cloning software I get some kind of error. I've tried quite a few of the popular free clone software found on google. Not sure whether it is because my 32GB SDD has to little space on it, only 300mb?

Answer:Clone hard drive

Have you changed any of your documents folders paths to the spinning drive?
If so you're sunk. Never change WINDOWS' paths, always leave on the C:/ drive. Your SSD and 500GB are now entwined as in one partition if you have been clever enough to do it. If so then you will need to clone both drives to the new one. That's where I'm stumped and I assume the cloning software is also stumped.

Question: clone hard drive??

I have a personal server running for work. I have 2 hard drives in it, the main one has all the server software and info on it. The server was setup by someone else, he setup all the software, basically set it up to work properly. Im wondering if there is a way to clone over everything on C drive to my E drive (just a backup drive). I need to be able to clone it as I dont have the software or files needed to get the server going again. All without installing what ever is needed to get it just the way it is now. What are my options?

Answer:clone hard drive??

True Image is my recommended commercial software; Clonezilla would be useful for free software.

Also, the software included with most every retail hard drive ever made will allow for disk-to-disk cloning/copying - if the drives are OEM you can still get the software from the drive manufacturer, you just need one of 'em (meaning if you have a Seagate and a Western Digital drive, two different brands, the software from Seagate or the software from WD would work for such purposes to copy/clone either way).

Hi, I'm interested in all the above messages. I want to clone my master drive in Windows xp, test the new drive for booting etc, but then remove it and keep it as an emergency drive to be put back into the PC if the original fails or XP becomes corrupted. Do I follow the procedure described in the early messages? I am concerned to hear the problems with Norton in the later messages. What is the best cloning system please? I've seen one called the Technicians Toolbox (or something like that) . Is that a Scam or a RipOff of some sort?
I have a backup PC running Windows ME. Can the same cloning procedure be followed with that?
Thanks,
James

Answer:Clone hard drive with ME

You can use Acronis True Image or Norton GHOST for the task. Since it's ME, some of the pitfalls won't affect you, and you should be able to simply slap the drive in as a secondary drive and do the clone operation. It really is that simple.

I've split your post to it's own thread, since we like to keep one issue per thread here.

I have a Compaq laptop and I want to upgrade to a larger hard drive but my Restore Disks wont work when the new drive is in. The old drive has 2 partitions- the Windows partition and a Restore partition. I cant figure out how to transfer these to the new drive. I tried Drive Image but it just creates a backup image on the new drive.

On my laptop there was originally just one HDD and I wanted all my "Media" to be in one partition and then Programme Files etc. in another (being C). This was just so that I could copy the entire 'Drive' I had created making moving videos and photos around easier.
So I used the built in disk partition manager and created some unallocated space, then called that space Drive (A) - But now that (A) drive is full and I want to add an additional 40Gb to it from the original C, but I the "Extend Volume" option is greyed out on the (A) drive even with the 40Gb as Unallocated.
I don't want to download a 3rd party software to do this as it seems so simple? I can do it for the (C) drive - why not the (A) I created?

Thanks!

Answer:Trouble re-resizing partitions on my hard drive using disk management.

Welcome to the forums Craiguccini. Rename your 'A:\' drive to a letter higher than C, but not same as your optical drive. Disk Management wants to extend to a drive on the right of the C:\ drive.

Answer:free software to clone hard drive to another drive?

Macrium Reflect (free version), or CloneZilla if you want more options and don't need a fancy GUI.

Seagate and Western Digital also do own-brand versions of Acronis True Image (Disc Wizard and Acronis TI WD Edition respectively), so if you have one of their drives you could visit their website and download it for free.

I am looking for a program that will:-

1. Clone my primary hard drive to a secondary hard drive which will be bootable if needed to replace the primary drive, and

2. Update the cloned drive with all subsequent changes made to the primary hard drive.

Anybody got any suggestions.

[I am running Windows XP Home SP3]

Answer:Program To Clone Hard Drive

Sounds like you are asking for RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks).

The level of RAID you are referencing is RAID1. This mirrors 2 drives so that if one fails, the other still works, and data is not lost.

Kind of expensive to implement though, you will have to judge if it is practical for your situation.

Unless of course, you don't need to make the changes constantly. If you are just looking to update daily rather than real-time then norton ghost might be all you need.

Just the last couple of days, when I boot my computer it goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner and then stops. If I turn it off and reboot it works after a few times. Is this a sign of impending death of the hard drive? Anyway, I would like to clone my hard drive with XP to a larger drive and keep my OS and programs the way they are now. Could you guys recommend a program or programs to do this?

Thanks in advance,
jeffncris
