Windows Update won't load through start screen (please help)

Question: Windows Update won't load through start screen (please help)

Well... it didn't take long for me to have issues again. Why does this always happen to me? Anyway...After I used CCleaner yesterday to clean up my Windows 10 computer which I do every week (I DID NOT use the Registry one) I started having issues. I couldn't get it to shut down so I had to force shut it down. When I started it up again I noticed that when I search for 'update' in the search box down next to the start button and I try to click on 'Check for updates' and 'Windows Update Settings' nothing happens. Nothing loads.I was able to get into Windows update through the regular Settings app though. This is disconcerting. As far as I know, I have no viruses and this was not occurring when I started the computer after I got home from work. I would prefer not to reset to factory settings either.I used CCleaner in a similar manner last week and this did not occur. From what I can tell, it is still checking for Windows Update and there are no other issues but this is still a disconcerting issue and I want it to work through the Search. If someone could help me fix this issue I would really appreciate it. Please help me ASAP.Thank youP.S.: Here's System Information:OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 HomeVersion 10.0.10586 Build 10586Other OS Description Not AvailableOS Manufacturer Microsoft CorporationSystem Name DESKTOP-L2A1944System Manufacturer ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.System Model TP550LABSystem Type x64-based PCSystem SKU ASUS-NotebookSKUProcessor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20GHz, 2195 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. Preferred Solution: Windows Update won't load through start screen (please help)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I apologize in advance for my illiteracy with computers. I don't know what happened in my situation. I'm running Windows Vista on an Acer Laptop w/ 1GB ram. My computer was running a bit slower than usual so I decided to attempt to restart it. After the computer tried to start up again, all I got was the start up black screen with the small grey blinking line in the top left. It stays at this screen and goes nowhere. It doesn't show any sign of progress and don't hear the computer running or attempting to anything at all. The fans work and the computer is on but it won't go anywhere past this screen. Any help at all would be great. Thank you for your time.

Answer:Windows Vista won't load past start up screen

Shut down, power on laptop, tab a key printed on screen for SETUP/BIOS, load defaults, save & exit, tab F8 for safe mode, if all goes well, log in as admin, start, control..., dev mgr, make sure there's no examination mark, restart pc as normal. If that blanks the screen again, go back to safe mode, start, run, msconfig, clear box for startup items, restart pc.

My windows 7 will not load past the start up screen...I was able to get into safe mode and try to restore and repair and neither worked. I ended up backing up my files just in case I cant get this problem fixed. I will add though that my battery is dead and often falls off the back of the computer...I have read something about battery issues being a cause of start up problems....other then that I have no idea what to do and my gut is telling me there has to be something I can do and that my computer should still be functional...HELP please lol

Answer:Windows 7 wont load past start up screen

How were you able to back up files when you can't get Windows running?  What happened to your computer that lead to the problem of the battery falling off?  Have tried removing the battery and then starting your computer with it plugged in to a wall outlet?

[size="4"]Hi! I'm hoping someone can help me out. I'm working on a friend's laptop. It's a Sony Vaio with Windows Vista. It won't load Windows. It goes to the screen with the status bar at the bottom like it is loading and then just goes to a blank screen with the cursor there, but nothing else.I tried putting the recovery disk in and doing a repair, but that didn't get it to work. The recovery disk also let me check some things to look for errors, but it didn't find anything. But, a really weird thing is that sometimes I can't get the thing to do anything at all. Sometimes, you turn it on or reboot and nothing at all happens. It doesn't try to load anything. The manufacturer's boot up screen doesn't even come up that says "Sony Vaio". It just has a black screen with the arrow there. When it does this I can't even get anything to happenwhen I try to boot from a cd rom disk. I can hear the cd rom drive spin, but all I get is that blank screen with the arrow and not even the manufacturer's boot up screen and nothing from the cd rom either! This seems to be happening more frequently too. Actually, now it happens most of the time. Then, I'll have to just let it sit turned off for awhile and then turn it back on and it will start workingagain, but still won't load windows.I'm totally confused and frustrated with it. I can't work on the stupid thing to get windows to work right when most of the time it won't even let me work on it from a cd rom ... Read more

Hi Guys at SevenForums Im back again(i know you guys are tired of me, lol)! O.K., here goes:

first, I got an alert from the action center saying I have a virus( although i know it would be helpful, i do not remeber the virus' name, sorry), it showed the name, and suggested i remove it. So i downloaded mbam, installed it, updated it, and ran it. it discovered 1 moderate, 3 low risk infections so I removed them all. I ran a quick scan afterwards to confirm the system was clean...and system was clean. ( I also ran a quick scan with VIPRE Internet Security 2013 and found 0 infections)

second, I received a windows update alert saying there were updates available. I figured that would be a good idea right about now to fully update my system with any vulnerability releases, so i let them download, but i always choose when to install them. They completed download and were "ready" for install. so I shutdown the computer so it can install the updates. So far, all textbook stuff right?

Here's where it got tricky...

O.K. so third, it gets to the windows screen, but the login screen never appears just the mouse cursor. I chalk it up to the updates now being configured,...so I wait...and wait...and wait. So now its been 15 min and things are not looking textbook at this point. the display is still showing a black screen and I notice the HDD light is not flashing, so its not crunching. Since no data was being crunched I figured it safe to power down and retry, but the power ... Read more

What will happen to my start screen tiles with the Windows 10 update? I have lots of things on my start screen, such as internet links to things I want to follow up on, etc. I do not want to lose these, nor do I want to lose my start screen arrangement. I'm not thrilled about vertical scrolling, since it's hard to scan group titles that way, but I'll deal with it (or change how I do things I fear, since scrolling tiles horizontally works well for me).

Hello wilson333 and welcome:
You can remove the 'Power' button but not 'Search'...

... you'll need to modify the Windows Registry:

Power Button on Start Screen - Add or Remove

Hi, so as you can read from the title Windows 7 won?t start up and doesn?t make any normal ?start up beeps? and just presents me with a black ?no signal screen?. I assume it automatically installed updates when it last shut down as it was telling me that there were updates ready to be installed and I do remember that one of the updates was for nVidia graphics drivers. However I have already tried the following to try and get it working:

-Removed both graphics cards and replaced them with one old ATI graphics card

-Removed the power cord and held the power button for 3 minutes (apparently this was a solution)

-Removed all USB devices

-Replaced the keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard

-Tried only one of the current graphics cards

-Tried using one monitor with each graphics card

-Removed each RAM stick one by one, however when I only had one RAM stick in it made 3 Sharp beeps on start-up and then turned off and turned back on by itself.

-Unplugged the hard drive

-Plugged the hard drive into a different SATA port

-Removed the motherboard battery for 5 minutes in attempt to rest the bios

So far nothing has worked and I wondered if someone had a solution. The spec of the PC is:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit
Intel Core i7 950 OEM Possessor
LG Blu Ray 6x GGC-H20L Drive
LG DVDRW 22x IDE Drive
OEM Cardreader
Samsung 1.5TB SATA2 Hard Drive

Since the upgrade of Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Preview, users were having problem to pin Control Panel items like Windows Update to Start Screen. If a user right clicks any Control Panel item and click Pin to Start, nothing happens. To resolve this issue, here?s a small workaround.
1. Right click on Control Panel item and click on Create Shortcut. This will create a shortcut on the Desktop.
2. Go to desktop and Copy that shortcut to %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
3. This will place the shortcut in All App screen. Just go to All app screen by clicking on the arrow at bottom left of Start Screen. And you can sort them by Date installed.
And now right click on it and click on Pin To Start from the App bar below. Now you have the Windows Update pinned to Start Screen. So from Start Screen , you can now open Windows Update.

Answer:Pin Windows Update / Control Panel items to Windows 8.1 Start Screen

Okay, so here's the deal. I had Windows Service Pack 2. Everything was just lovely, then I decided to FINALLY upgrade to Service Pack 3 because some high end Adobe products I was installing suggested it for better compatibility. Aiesh, so I took the plunge and tried to upgrade to Windows Service Pack 3. I was smart because of all the horror stories though and did a full backup up all my data including system state, etc. I set a system restore point, the whole nine yards. I upgraded with no problems but when the computer restarted it do so, got past POST, and the windows boot or load screen popped up with the loading bar. . . but windows never loaded! A lot of people report having problems where it get's past the windows load screen and just keeps cycle rebooting. Or it'll load to the user selection screen/welcome screen. This is not me, I am simply stuck at the windows load screen. (Picture below for reference)

So, I booted into safe mode with networking, searched for help EVERYWHERE and couldn't find any. -=/ By the way, I could boot into safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, and safe mode with networking. So I used my system restore point that had made before the SP3 upgrade and now I am typing to you from the comfort of my Service Pack 2. But this ticks me off because I want SP3 on my system for the sake of those Adobe programs and just because I can't get the dern thing on there it bugs me. Answer:Installed Windows Service Pack 3 Now Windows won't load past Windows Boot Load Screen

Hi sirdanceal0t,
I had a similar problem when Windows XP SP3 was released it was only designed for Intel processors, so if you have a AMD processor it will cause your system not to load, if you are running a AMD processor if i were you try and get back to the System Restore Point or if that fails reimage your pc and just before installing SP3 looks for the patch/fix for your processor model, then install SP3 and it should all be fine.

On the other hand if you have a Intel processor i woulldn't know what to advise.

I updated to Windows Phone 10 on my Nokia Lumia 635 and i want dot restore my phone's settings and bring back my themes and apps and messages etc. When i did that everything was working and then it went to a blank screen with signal bars on top and a battery indicator with my navigation bar at the bottom, but theres nothing else....all black. everything else works well except my notification/action center doesn't work and nothing n the start screen works...totally black. Help!!!

Answer:What do i do when my Lumia 635 doesn't show a start screen when i update to Windows Phone 10?

Can you not just go to the app list and pin the apps back on the start screen?
Did you already try a soft reset.
If above does not work you could do a hard reset or just rollback to WP 8.1

Hey guys,

To keep this as short as I can, through my own ignorance I ended up downloading a virus (please don't judge) which eventually lead to Windows 8.1 not even loading up the screen where I can choose to enter the BIOS, boot order etc. I don't even have a DVD drive for my case as they're not compatible. I've tried using DBAN on a USB stick to nuke the ******* and install Linux, but it won't detect the USB, guessing because of the boot order which I can't change. Now, I have a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 arriving tomorrow (on disk) along with a Samsung SE-208GB/RSGD Ultra Slim Portable Optical DVD Writer the day after but I don't even know if they'll work as the USB doesn't. I have the original disk I used to install Windows 8.1 and a years old external DVD drive that isn't doing any justice.

My specs are here, just replace Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with Windows 8.1 x64.

Answer:Won't even load the Start Screen

Very nice build....you have to find how to boot to a dvd with your UEFI bios is probably the issue.
Can you enter bios by taping "DEL" continuously after pressing power button?
If you can just choose "legacy" mode for boot mode and disable "secure boot" and you will do fine.

Hello, I'm new here. Sorry for posing another thread but I couldn't find one similar enough to my question. Anyway, my laptop began moving incredibly slow last night, like the cursor would hardly move and it sounded like it was running extra hard. I turned it off and this morning it won't load past the start up screen. And still, the windows loading icon spins incredibly slow.

Eventually it goes to a black screen for some time, then the automatic repair icon appears, then "diagnosing your pc". It made it past that once and got to the advanced option screen but was moving so slowly that I couldn't click on anything.

Not really sure what to do! Anyone have an idea? Thank you!

Hello, all. Hope someone can help me out:

My main problem is that whenever I turn my computer on (dell dimension 520) it suddenly freezes on the screen that proceeds the "Hit F2 / HIT F12" screen. The blinking cursor at the bottom of the screen will pulse but the computer won't load from there.

Here's some history on the computer:

I accidentally infected my computer with a virus after clicking a link a friend sent me. I removed it using Windows Live One Care. Once I removed the virus I would see two error messages appear whenever I started up my computer. I can't remember what they were named -- they were 'could not locate file' messages. I just assumed they were remnants from the viruses I removed.

A few days ago my computer began to run slowly. I noticed this coincided with a automatic update from Windows. I couldn't start my computer normally from then on, I could only access in safe mode. I used a restore point to go back to before the automatic update and things seemed fine. However, I forgot to stop the automatic update from occuring again and the same situation occured.

The problem seemed fixed until accidentally removed Windows Live One Care while trying to uninstall a different program. I shut down my computer since it began to run really slowly before I could re-install One Care and from then on, again, I could only start in safe mode.

Finally my computer stopped loading at all and now freezes on the screen I mentioned above. I tried u... Read more

I tried going in in safe mode and this worked, but i need an internet connection
I thought maybe it has too much stuff on that account, ie hogging memory so i deleted a lot of stuff like 30 gigs of stuff but it still wont load
I need the internet connection at home so i tried going into safe mode with networking (i think that gives a net connection but maybe it emans something else)
i have ran spy bot s&d and deleted everything, also 2 other programmes + ms anti sypware new beta
thinking it was a virus but it cant be.

i tried a lot of the options you get in F8 but only the normal safe mode seems to work. i cant do a system restore as i deleted them yesterday as they were like a few gigs of stuff on it and i cant seem to find my xp cd so i cant reinstall windows, at least for 4 weeks as ican get a copy when i get home.

Any ideas what to do?

even if it just get me an internet connection in safe mode as thats all i need really.

Also its win xp

Hi

My computer (Dell Inspiron 530) has become slow to boot up. it takes around 5 to 8 minutes to get up and running. When it gets there it runs great.

When it boots up you get a blank screen for a minute or less, then the Dell Spalsh screen for about 3-4 minutes and then the Windows Xp screen for around 3 minutes.

Using McAFee and no virus, malware etc issues detected. I have maintained computer well and runs absolutely perfectly outside of this slow start up.

Ran the Dell support check and came up with an Error 4COO:021D. The seconds register is not updating. The part may be bad or the 32KHz crystal might not be functioning.

Any ideas what that means and which part or how to fix?

My computer was working fine then just the past couple days has been acting WIERD.

So this is what happens, while using the computer, periodically when I go to the start screen and search for something, it just hangs for about 20-60 seconds before responding. Now today, every single time I start the computer, it loads fine gets me to the start screen, but if I type anything for the search then it freezes on me for 20-60seconds. If I start it and immediately go to the desktop, I can run SOME programs like IE or Chrome but NOT Ventrilo or games (for 20-60 seconds). Also, TASK manager will not come up nor do any of the windows 8 "charms" work for that time frame.

I am at a loss, this is a fresh OS install about a month ago on a brand new Samsung 840 SSD. All my drivers are up to date, I didn't have this issue a week ago but I did have a system restore point that I restored my computer to and that didn't fix it.

I also tried the Windows Startup Repair, and it tells me it could not repair it and to check my log at "F:/Window...." whereas I have NO F:/ drive and Windows is obviously installed on my C:/ drive (also, it will not allow me to "refresh" my computer. *I have legit Windows 8 Keys that I purchased

I have tried disabling the fast boot in power options.
I have ran a registry cleaner (ccleaner, I hate running cleaners but it was a desperate measure).
I tried creating a new user account.

Nothing like 5 hours of googling and brain wrecking to discover a stupid fix. Ugh, turns out "Nvidia Network Service" is the culprit. I disable that and ALL the problems went away. Hope this helps someone else who runs into issues like mine!!

W7 will start up, load files, and then stay at a black screen with a mouse. I think that the hard drive may have gone bad, and when I did a memory diagnosis, I have found that there is bad memory with my main hard drive. I do not have the original disk, nor can I access any of the files. I tried system Recovery, but it would not list W7 as an option. If someone knows where I could find those drivers to load onto a disk, that would be great. My computer is a Dell Studio 1535.

Answer:W7 will start up, load files, and then stay at a black screen with a mouse

Have you tried booting into safe mode (F8)?

If it were a HD it probably wouldnt boot.

Doubt its memory for the same reason.

I am thinking video driver, and if it boots in safe mode would be more certain.

Answer:Computer Wont Load up frozen start up screen RAM problem

Hi sorry you seem to have a poor impression of techs lets hope we can help you and possibly change that, 2 things come to mind, the slot is bad ie damaged in some way or the ram is,when you tested the ram in the slot did you try only 1 stick, try 1 of the others in it if it works ok then it is the ram that is the problem,if not then it is the slot, you can run with 1 less stick of ram, also check that the ram all matches as this would throw up a similar problem

This just started happening last night. Earlier that day I bought a 160gb seagate external HD at Fry's for 50 bux and was moving tons a files over to it (for about 3 hours). At one point I cancelled uploading and rebooted fine, but later that night my girlfriend did the same thing and rebooted and XP will not load... not in safe mode. I didn't install anything with the external HD as it was Plug n Play and I didn't install any new programs yesterday either...

I don't have a Win XP CD either (or boot disk). I guess my first action will need to be to buy Win XP and try a system recovery?

Is there any way to find out what is stopping it from loading?

I also switched the memory sticks with some other memory and that did nothing...

I'm at a loss :l

Hey everyone, Windows 7 did an automatic update yesterday and now every time I turn the computer and boot into the OS it will not load the desktop. I only see the mouse pointer, Windows logo, ease of access and shut down options buttons with a black background. I have never experienced this problem and it was working fine before. I wasn't able to see what the update was, however I know it was a most recent one. I tried waiting several minutes thinking maybe the desktop would finally load, but it didn't. Safe mode is of no use because I also see the same black screen the way it looks in normal mode. The computer has no known viruses or any other issues that would contribute to this problem that I'm aware of. I would like to know if there is a different solution to this besides using backups or system restore points. Possibly a registry entry I could change or delete or system file to replace. I'm not sure of how to get into the registry editor because crtl-alt-delete or ctrl-shift-esc won't work to open task manager. I tried using start up repair from the recovery disc and scanning the partition where the OS is stored for errors with check disk. No problems were found either way. When clicking the ease of access button I also receive an error saying "utilman.exe - Bad Image." Thanks for your help.

Update - 9/8/15

Fixed by reinstalling Windows fresh (Again).

I think the problem was caused by installing Windows linked with my Microsoft account and then switching that to a local user. My Microsoft account was registered for the insider program so perhaps I was receiving the fast updates and switching to a local account put me on slow updates which got Windows Update muddled in the confusion.

Original Post

Windows Update appears to be stuck/broken. It displays this loading animation even when left alone for an entire day (See screenshot). All the other panels such as Windows Defender will display their available options, it is only Windows Update that will not show.

This is a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

I have made some alterations to the service configuration, disabling what I had been advised as unnecessary services. I have reverted as many of those changes as I could remember but it is a possibility that one of those changes caused this.

Background Intelligent Transfer service is "Running" and set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)".
Windows Update service is "Running" and set to "Manual (Trigger Start)".

8 Aug 15 - Edit: I have cross referenced services with another computer with an unaltered fresh install of Windows 10 Home. No difference in service configuration was found.

Internet connectivity is stable. Network profile is "Public". No alterations have been made to the default network configuration.

Now my Y560 laptop computer is back to it's original problem: It first overheated and shut down.  Now every time I try to load WIndows 7 normally the screen turns off completely when it is supposed to load the user log-in screen. The computer is still on but the display turns off everytime it reaches that same spot. I can only load Safe Mode windows 7 but it is of not much use because safe mode does not allow me to run any programs.  The system seems to be producing way high temperatures even in safe mode. How can I fix this problem with windows 7 shutting off the display when it is about to reach the log-in screen? Even when transfering files in safe mode to an external drive the system will turn off sometimes when a lot of files are transfering. This is very dissapointing because I spent $850 on this computer a year ago, and now it is malfunctioning and over a motnth out of warranty.  This is such a terrible experience.  I've never had a computer break down like this before.  Now i have to resort to using my old desktop PC running XP with very basic functions. please help . thank you

Answer:Frustrated. Windows 7 will not load. Screen turns off when loading Windows 7 login screen. Y560

I solved my own problem but Lenovo plants should do a  much better job with quality control during manufacturing. I fixed the overheating problem/LCD screen always turning off at the Windows 7 login screen problem by doing this: 1)  Take out the  laptop power battery and unplus the system.    Open up the laptop and apply a thin layer of Artic Silver 5 thermal paste on all the 3 chips under the heat sink aand fan.  See this guide for how to safely remove fan and heat sink:Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 Hardware Maintenance Manual V2.0.2)  I moved the top ram to the bottom slot and the bottom one into the upper slot. Seems like it works for now.  Hopefully not too many of you run into this problem too as it has wasted many hours of my time.

I have a Dell Zino HD media desktop, and it all of a suddent showed this error on booting up:
CMOS checksum error, F2 to Run SETUP, F1 to load defaults

The thing is, I can't get it to move past it. I've tried 3 different keyboards, many restarts, and nothing gets it to move past this screen.
How can I overcome this?

Answer:Dell Zino: CMOS checksum error, F2 to Run SETUP, F1 to load defaults - Can't Move Past the Screen on Start Up

Unplug the system and hold the power button for 30 sec.  If that doesn't get the system to POST, the BIOS/CMOS is corrupt - replace the mainboard.

Hello,

I have been having this problem since a week or so. Broni has helped me in malware forum to rule out malware as responsible. My machine is clean and I was refered here for further help.

Here is my problem:

At boot-time, I see windows XP load screen with the progress bar, the progress bar advances to the end and then, the screen turns pitch black and all is see is an arrow cursor I can move around. I thought until yesterday that this was a permanent freeze-up, but if I wait, say, 6 minutes, the black screen disappears and windows then starts normally.

Last week, problem was intermittent, it now happens all the time.

Windows boot-up was fine before.

Please help me.

Answer:Windows load screen at boot, looong black screen, then normal startup

I had this tons of times with my old XP PC. It is normal if you have a lot of files on the HDD and you have little RAM. How much RAM do you have? What is the capacity of the HDD? And do you have the Windows XP disc? Would you be willing to upgrade the RAM and/or the OS if we must resort to that? Or would you rather just buy a new PC?

Please read all..Ok, i have a GeForce FX 5200 graphics card and a Dell Dimension 300 computer and monitor. Problem::This computer has an onboard graphics card which isnt good enough for the games i want to play, so i bought the geforce graphics card. I realised that my monitor was VGA and the card was DVI. I fixed that by getting a dvi/vga connector lead. I disabled the inboard graphics card, and inserted my geforce card. I booted windows and it worked ok apart from the resolution being huge. Then a ' found new harware' popup appeared and i followed the intruction booklet which said what to do with this popup. It said it needed to search for drivers to run the hardware, so i put the drver CD in. It started intalling, i went upstairs and when i came back down, there was a blank screen with a flashing white line in the top left corner. I turned the computer off and then on again. When it came back on, it showed the windows load screen, and as soon as windows loaded, the screen went black. there is not mouse and the keyboard doesnt work. It does this everytime i boot with the card in. I read the instruction booklet and it said to boot into safe mode. i hold down the F8 key and i click safe mode. it then goes into another screen that says ' choose which system you want to boot' i choose my computer and click enter. It then comes up with a screen full of white writing, is this right?I dont know what to do because the card SHOULD be working, and it says to insta... Read more

Hi!
I was apprehensive but I'm loving Windows 8, however, what is driving me mad is the account name that features in the top right of my Start Screen. It is my previous name and although it seems menial it is driving me crazy that it is wrong! Has anyone any ideas?!!

Hi,

I have successfully managed to upgrade, add a shutdown tile on the start screen, add a classic start on the desktop screen and get the right tiles on my desktop and remove the initial screen. I have a usable OS on my laptop again and it may sound strange but I like both interfaces and use them equally.

A few things I am really stuck on.

1. The right corner (charms bar) can take me back to the start tile screen from the desktop screen. However, it would be nice to have an icon on the desktop screen to take me to the start tile screen. I cannot find a way to do this. Please help.

2. I would like to pin my tiles so they never move. There are some tiles I want fixed nicely in the place I put them but each time I want to add a tile, and move it across, all my tiles move about.

3. It would be nice to colour my tiles individually. Is there any App to do this?

4. Some tiles cannot be made bigger (i.e. existing applications). Is there a way to do this?

Hello xyciana and welcome to Eightforums

I'm not sure if there is a way to make a shortcut icon to take you to the start screen. But you can use the Windows logo key on your keyboard to take you to the start screen. Just 1 press on the key and you are there.

2. I would like to pin my tiles so they never move. There are some tiles I want fixed nicely in the place I put them but each time I want to add a tile, and move it across, all my tiles move about.

I don't know if that can be done. In my knowledge, No.

3. It would be nice to colour my tiles individually. Is there any App to do this?

No, sorry to say that again, but that's how it is. No way to change the color of the tiles individually. But you never know, in the future somebody might come up with an application to change the color of the tiles For now, no is the answer.

4. Some tiles cannot be made bigger (i.e. existing applications). Is there a way to do this?

Well .... No again.

Hope I could help

Hey everyone I should let you know that I am not entirely sure this is a hardware issue but I'll ask here. Since I got my desktop made I keep getting a grey and black flashing screen after the windows loads to my login screen. I have gotten a replacement gpu as I expected this as the issue. I have tried multiple full factory resets, different monitors and cords to see if that was the issue but nothing works. I have uninstalled my gpu, monitor, and CPU, updated everything too(sorry this is so long). The only solution I have found is putting it to sleep and waking it up temporarily fixes it. The problem only occurs after i shut my computer down and and start it up for the first time. I have had this problem for over a year and i am desperate for any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Whenever the Windows loadscreen passes the screen goes black and I can move a cursor around the screen.
I have had this happen before and fixed it with bootrec.exe but I can't seem to get that to work this time...
Startup repair says it cannot help - Safe mode has the exact same black screen problem.
I have done chkdsk and sfc scannow - Didn't fix it.
When I boot into Kaspersky Rescue from a USB drive it mentions that I need to shut down windows properly before continuing. I would like to do this but I can't.
I have tried changing the active partition on information in some of these other threads - It didn't seem to work.
All disks are healthy according to the DISKPART and Partition Wizard. I have done the HP hardware diagnostic scans and everything comes up fine.

I see that a lot of the advice on the threads is to do a fresh install - Is it really broken beyond repair at this point?

Does anyone have any other ways I can try and fix this problem?

Following the advice given to Marty (1) I read the MS solution. I had previously attempted to reinstall Windows, however I did not know about pressing "r" at the setup screen. Now when I try to start, Win tries to load, then goes to a screen w/message "Setup is restarting" after a few seconds, windows tries to load again, then back to message screen ... etc-etc-etc!!

Choose "Last known good configuration that worked", and press the Enter key. The computer will attempt to load Windows.
If Windows does not start, try the same thing again .... and continue trying for 10 times, before you rule that option out as a means of getting your OS up and running again, normally.
Why 10 times? Based on past experience, a successful result is sometimes achieved after several consecutive failed attempts.

Had this odd thing happen after the latest windows update. I start my comp as normal but when i get to the desktop im getting this...
Its like a 1/4 of my screen is missing. I went to display and the resolution was my normal 1024x768. So i changed the screen res to its max setting just to see if it would make a difference and it worked fine. I then set the screen back to 1024x768 and problem solved. Now every time i start up i get this 1/4 screen missing and have to go through this routine before i can see the full screen again. As there has been no software or hardware changes and my graphics card is not old im assuming it was the update, Can i revert back to the version before 1607 ? and if so how do i do this ?

Answer:3/4 of a screen on start up after latest update.

Have a look at this, https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...s-windows.html I have no idea why your screen size does that? I think I would look for and install the latest video driver for your hardware.

Hi Bleepers..I am very frustrated. My coputer has a blinking cursor and a black screen. Malware started this, and i rebooted before i was able to remove the malware...to find three errors on a black screen. ntoskrnl.exehal.dllKDCOM.dllAfter i saw this i realized i could not load windows. i went to recovery console and ran chkdsk /r . It seemed to work fine, and found and fixed one or more errors on the volume. I did not exit properly from the recovery console, i just rebooted Now i have a blinkig cursor. I do not have a Windows XP disk, even though my copy on my computer is genuine.I have a dell xps m1210 notebook.I attempted to burn the iso file which is a link from the "boot fixes" section, but i am getting nothing to work.Any suggestions...please! I also set in my BIOS for the Cd/DVD to run first on the boot menu. Thanks - JP

Answer:Cannot Load Windows Xp Start up Disk ISO

Get an ISO burned, boot from the disc, reformat, that's probably the easiest way. Any new data you get in the future put it on a stick or external. Sincerely, LT Dan

Answer:I need to load a EXE file when I start the Windows XP

Hi rocafer !

You can either put a shortcut to the file in the startup menu (drag'n'drop it in start menu => all programs => startup) or create a scheduled task to run the file on logon : start => all programs => accessories => system tools => scheduled task.

Hello, I have been trying to use the installer dvd to try and repair windows. At the screen where I can select to load drivers, I don't see an option from the place that says "Select an operating system that you want to repair". I hit next, and I go the startup repair from recovery tools. Every time I run the tool, I get a message that says that the tool may have completed successfully, reboot to find out.

When I go to details of the repair I see a message that says Windows\system32\drivers\pciide.sys is corrupt, and another message about pciidex.sys.

Answer:Windows will not start, OS is not able to load drivers.

Try running an sfc/scannow command at boot.

When I start my computer (a four-year-old Dell which runs Windows XP Professional), it loads without any problem, but when Windows starts, it won't display my desktop icons or the Windows bar that's normally at the bottom of the screen (including quick launch, the start button, the clock, etc.). The only thing that is visible on the screen is the My Documents folder (not Desktop or My Computer or anything else...always My Documents). Of course, from there I can navigate around and get things done, but it's obviously not ideal.

I originally posted the problem on the BC Malware forum (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic365343.html), but none of the scans and logs turned up any malware, so the person who was helping me suggested I take the problem to this board.

I think that's everything...please let me know if there's anything else I can add to make the problem clearer. Thanks for your help!

After reading about windows updates, I went in to check windows update. When I select WU all I see is some grey/blue dots going across the top of the screen. I tried the troubleshooter and windows reset for the update, but no changes. I contacted the windows community but instruction for submittine some logs was incorrect. One is attached.

Answer:Windows update will not load

Hi, try the following making sure each stage is clear or fixed before proceeding:

From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

From an admin command prompt run
sfc /scannow

Download and install Tweaking.com's free cautious repair tool
Follow the steps as appropriate and select only the Windows update repair.

For over a week, when I start my laptop, it seems to start normally, then I get a screen that says "updates could not load and changes are being undone, don't turn off my computer'.  Does anyone know what is going on?  I am using Windows 8.1.

I have Panda Security, and Anti Super Spyware, both paid for.  I just got rid of Win Patrol free, although I have used it on my old laptop without problems.  I have not purchased or downloaded any other programs.

Any ideas how I can find out what is going on?

Answer:Windows update won't load.

I'm just offering some advice. I'm not a Computer expert, just so you know

I had this issue on 2 different PCs, both with Windows 8.1.
It would force me into updates, and then say that the updates were unsuccessful and that it is undoing the changes.
It stayed in a restart loop of 'undoing changes' until I went into Safe Mode (using Shift + F8) and did a System Restore.
I have now changed the settings on BOTH computers to not automatically install update. I don't need that kind of trouble! LOL

So I updated all of my computers to Windows 8.1 Update 1 via Windows Update yesterday. I noticed that on my laptop, my desktop, and my wife's tablet, the power button shows up between the user profile picture and magnifying glass in the upper right corner of the Start Screen.

However, it does not show up on my tablet after the same update. Is it a screen size thing or did I do something wrong?

Answer:No Power button on Start Screen After Update 1

Yes, if the screen size is smaller than a certain size (700 pixels? I don't recall) it will not appear.

I have a particular layout for my Start Screen but after update 1 my Start Screen layout reverted to some old layout and dumped all my pinned stuff not in old layout at the end of screen towards the right.

I spent like 30 to 40 minutes to get to some what to my layout but not perfect. I sort of forgot the layout but still kind of mad because I was so used to original layout. I kind of now feel the pain of people who miss the Start Menu. When you have your setup and then it gets moved is annoying.

I wonder if there is a way to revert or restore my start setting? Is there like a history of layout options? I really love the File History but I don't think it has PC settings saved.

Update: I decided to just redo my Start Screen Layout and hope that next OS update will retain it.

Greetings
I had to go back to December 1 due to a problem I could not resolve, losing 1709 back to 1703.
Now I updated again to 1709 with few problems:
1) my start screen is not the picture it used to be butt a screen with time & date. I have to click on the screen to get my usual picture screen. How do I get rid of the first screen?
2) I could not delete windows.old even after "taking ownership" and using C: disk cleanup + system cleanup.
After my previous update I could without any problem delete windows.old. Can anything be done about it, or I have to give it a day or two and retry? In addition to that C: added 10GB and I couldn't find from where since Users looks as it was.
3) Can I survive without OneDrive, Windows Defender, and Windows Firewall? (I already neutralized them)
thank you

Answer:start screen change after update to 1709

one problem solved: windows.old was deleted by checking "previous windows" in C; system cleanup
C: regained it's previous volume.
In personalize --> lock screen I set get fun facts etc to off and changed app to sgow detailed status to "none"
but I still get time & date blue screen before picture screen.

thank you

Hey folks,
I currently have a Lumia 920, which has Update 1's preview on it. I've set up all the live folders etc on it, but I'm about to buy a Lumia 930 and am wondering how I can restore the start screen on this? I imagine that it will try and restore the start screen from the regular 8.1, or 8.0, itself.

Hey guys been reading the site for a day trying to find a fix for my problem but I haven?t had any luck so I figured I?d start a thread. Sorry if this question is repetitive. I really appreciate the good info I have found - I read often.Essentially my computer freezes at start up and won?t even get into windows. It is a gateway desktop from about 3 or 4 years ago (I know that?s overly vague) and is running windows XP. I recently installed SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, adaware, firefox, and thunderbird ? all seemed to be running ok until firefox and thunderbird started freezing. I also recently noticed that Norton 360 wasn?t loading - in fact when I looked for it I couln?t find it on the pc. (this is all right be for it crashed)Now when I say freezes at startup I mean it?ll get me to the ?gateway? screen with the f2 and f10 options and then after that it freezes on a black screen. Otherwise it looks like it starts the initial processes and gives the f11 prompt then freezes on a completely black screen. I have tried to boot into safe mode after tapping the f8 key and it just starts listing about a page of lines like the following and does nothing just sits there with stuff like this on it:multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\fltmgr.sys multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\disk.sys multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\sr.sys multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\mup.sys(these are not... Answer:Two Devices Will Not Start (Windows cannot load drivers)

Hi CharlesE

Are you having any actual issues on your PC as the Dell Studio XPS 435T is a high end PC and the Rage XL PCI device its listed in Sys Info, I doubt would run on that system as its very low end and old, maybe the Ati driver messed up and also installed this driver which as its not for your system it wont start.

Just a thought but as that PC is likely running an ATi card over the other Nvidia option is to install the lastest Ati graphics driver and see if that clears this up, also on another thing I noticed your only at SP1 for Vista, SP2 is now out.

Do you have a TV capture card in the PC? if so what one did you buy/order?

Hello! All of a sudden my pc wouldn't get past the Starting windows screen, I rebooted and got an error screen telling me a recent software or hardware change might have caused the failure (I haven't changed a thing as of recently). That screen gave me the option to start in safe mode (didn't work, it would load a number of drivers and then just sit there indefinitely trying to load the next driver, but not being able to do so) Rebooted, tried the other option the screen gave me, which was using the last valid configuration, but it wouldn't work either, again it would not get past the Starting windows screen.

So I booted from a recovery cd, it shows "Loading files" and then just sits there with the green loading bar running forever. I tried this with two different discs, and let them load for hours, it would never get past that screen.

I then tried booting from a USB, this time not just the recovery options but with a full windows installation iso on it. Same result, won't get past the green loading bar despite letting it load for hours.

I have saved my files to an external disc, by using Ubuntu live. But I have no idea how to proceed to repair windows, I have used my recovery discs successfully in the past, but now nothing works. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

Answer:Windows won't start, won't load recovery options either What can I do?

Hello and welcome lala now if this were me I would try this
Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 you will need to make a bootable disk and setthe BIOS to boot from the optical drive or USB if you decide to use asrick. Personally I prefer a disk.

This will run indepedent of Windows and scan for malware.

Answer:Windows Could Not Start Load Need Dlls For Kernel

Is this a new message? What happened to start this, if you know? Do you have the Recovery Console installed as a boot option? Are you installing for the first time or has the computer been running all right? What is the exact wording of the message, literatim?

Try booting from one of the media below. They contain a generic boot.ini that defaults to the first partition of the first drive and the "Windows" folder. But there are options for any of 3 partitions on the first 2 hard drives and "Winnt" folders if that is where your system is installed.

Download XP Sysboot media here:
Bootable Sysboot Floppy
Bootable Sysboot CD Image

If you do not have a burner that will burn ISO images, or if you don't know how, then use this Standalone CD/DVD/ISO Burner to create a bootable CD from the image above.

Boot into safe mode OR if you have more than one user account, try another desktop.
Start Menu/All Programs/Accessories.
System Tools/System Restore.
Choose a restore point just prior to when the issue began.

Your system will reboot, only after rebooting and getting on a desktop will you find out if the restore is successful.

I opened an email attachment a couple of days ago I thought was from the post office and they "got me". It came into my Inbox, past my junk mail filter, and I over rode a couple of security warnings. But when Spybot wanted to change a registry I realized I was going down the wrong path, quickly closed everything, scanned and cleaned, and thought I had made it.

But when the computer auto-rebooted in the middle of that evening, I woke up in the morning to a hang. It hangs up on the blue Windows screen (not the deathly blue screen). I followed as closely as I could the instructions given on this forum. Thank you VERY much for this resource.

But to no avail. It still hangs. I can start in Safe Mode w/ Networking. I backed up my Documents folder prior to trying to remove the malware. Scans found several tracking cookies and one Trojan. But still no start up.

The manufacturer (Toshiba) has kept the installation disk and wants $30 for "shipping and handling"!!! and 7-10 days. I am hoping you can help me avoid that. I am attaching a couple of the logs. If you need more I will look for them on my computer.

Thanks in advance for all of your assistance. I really do appreciate it!!!

Peter

Welcome to Major Geeks!

There is nothing in these logs that indicates malware problems.

Do you still have Norton Security Suite installed? It shows in ComboFix as enabled but does not show elsewhere as installed.

I can start my Toshiba Tecra A10 laptop in Safe Mode w/ Networking. But it hangs on the blue Windows screen (not the 'blue death' screen) on normal start-up.

I opened an email attachment several days ago and I believe this has caused my problem. I was over in the Malware forum but they could not find any problem. I suspect I cleaned it off before they could detect it. In any case, I got attacked, found it, cleaned it, and thought I was good. But that night the computer went into an auto-restart and when I went to it in the morning it was hung up.

I have tried repairing it and I have tried resetting to a restore point before the attack. Neither has worked.

Toshiba wants $30 in 'Shipping and Handling" and, more importantly, 7-10 days to send me a Windows installation disk. I want to avoid this if I can. I have backed up my Documents folder.

I am running Windows Vista Business, 32-bit with SP-1. When I try to download SP-2 it says I cannot do so in Safe Mode.

Any suggestions?

For anyone who is interested, this problem has been resolved!

The bad news is I am not totally sure how I did it. I tried updating Vista to SP2, per MajorGeeks recommendation, and could not. Nor could I install the readiness tool to do the same.

I then navigated my way to Microsoft's forum where a cross-referenced thread to my problem suggested using chkdsk. So I ran that, and while it was running, went to Thanksgiving dinner.

Had a Thanksgiving feast that couldn't be beat (ala Alice's Restaurant!!), and when I came home the computer had rebooted itself to the log-in page. Voila! Problem solved.

Thank you to everyone (and esp. MajorGeeks) for the resource to help me navigate to a solution to this. It saved me a ton of time and a bit of money as well!!
