Samsung Magician software for SSDs?

Question: Samsung Magician software for SSDs?

Hi all, Just had a quick question - I have two Samsung SSD 840 EVOs. One for my OS and one for my Flight Simulator X install. The SSD comes with the Samsung Magician software that offers a range of features. I was just wondering if anyone took advantage of these features to optimize their SSDs? I'm looking at the Perfomance Optimization, OS Optimization, Over Provisioning, and RAPID mode features. I wouldn't be totally honest if I said I knew what all those features did. Just wanted to see what others have done. Also, on a related-note: every time I boot my PC and log in, I get a message basically saying Samsung Magician needs Admin rights in order to run and I should relaunch the application with admin rights. For security, I run as a standard user and have a separate Administrator profile when needed. Is there any way to keep Samsung Magician from running on startup? I've read from numerous places that it is not required to startup with Windows, however, it is not listed in the msconfig.exe Startup tab? Thank you for your help. As always, it is greatly appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Samsung Magician software for SSDs?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have it installed on my laptop - bout all I really have it installed for is if there's any firmware updates, it'll notify me of them. Otherwise I've only used it to run a few benchmarks through it.

Check your Startup folder if there's a shortcut there:
Current user: %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
All users: %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Or if it's running as a Service rather than under Startup tabs. You may have to run MSConfig (or Task Manager if on Win8 or Win10) as Admin to see all available running programs.

Alright so I just recently started using the Intel SSD Toolbox software for my 120g x25-m, and found it pretty simple and if the weekly trims help, that's great. I was wondering if there is an identical program I should consider using for the samsung 830, I know it came with a program titled Magician Software, which more or less from what I can dig up, does similar things. Does anyone have any experience with it? Is it good and worth using? Or is there something else floating around that would be better? The samsung 830 (256gb) is my main drive and OS.

Thanks~

Answer:Samsung 830 (Magician Software?)

I've used both and SSD Magician is roughly equivalent in features if not a little less polished than the Intel software. AFAIK there are no alternatives, this is written by Samsung themselves.

There is a new version of Samsung Magician software, version 4.3, which I discovered when I ran the program today.

The new version has provision to enable "Rapid Mode" on Samsung 840 Pro series SSD's which I think was only previously available on the EVO series.

This may be of interest to those that are running 840 pro series SSD's.

Answer:New version of Samsung Magician software.

Actually I am running EVO's Ranger so I will try that when I get up tomorrow

Since I have the Raid Setting in Bios I can't Load Samsung's Drive Magician  software due to the Intel RST driver is loaded once I go to ACHI Mode the Samsung drivers can be installed because the default windows drivers will be where intel chipset sata/pcie RST driver was

Right-click the Windows Start Menu. Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
If you don’t see Command Prompt listed, it’s because you have already been updated to a later version of Windows.  If so, use this method instead to get to the Command Prompt:
Click the Start Button and type cmd
Right-click the result and select Run as administrator
Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
If this command does not work for you, try bcdedit /set safeboot minimal

Restart the computer and enter BIOS Setup (the key to press varies between systems).
Change the SATA Operation mode to AHCI from either IDE or RAID (again, the language varies).
Save changes and exit Setup and Windows will automatically boot to Safe Mode.
Right-click the Windows Start Menu once more. Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
If you had to try the alternate command above, you will likely need to do so here also: bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot

Reboot once more and Windows will automatically start with AHCI drivers... Read more

I recently installed a Samsung 840 Pro MZ-7PD512 SSD into my W500 (product Id = 4058CTO, win 7 64bit).The 840 Pro is working perfectly with generic firmware, I think, but every time I run Samsung Magician it crashes with 'c0000005' during its initialisation. The Samsung firmware is normally installed via Magician.I raised a case with Samsung who pointed me to a Site where I could download the firmware which has to be installed as a bootable ISO. I used both Nero Express and Magic ISO to create DVDs but, in each case, when booting my W500 with these DVDs the process ended with the message 'panic: mcb chain corrupted'.Originally I installed the SSD and restored a Win7 image backup to it. So, thinking that the Samsung supplied copy utility may do the trick, I re-installed my old HDD and purchased a USB-SATA cable and attempted to use the Samsung copy utility to populate the 840 Pro. I tried this a number of times and all ended with 'Program not responding' sometimes annoyingly after getting to 100%. So I put the 840 Pro back in  and restored it from my Win 7 backup image. For both the Copy Utility and Magician I tried the version on the supplied CD and the latest version from Samsung's Web site.As I said, the 840 Pro is working perfectly but all my efforts to use the Samsung software have failed.I have done quite a bit of tolling the Net re this and have not found any answers - Magician appears to work fine for most people. Use Samsung Data Migration Software intead. It's a simple, free of charge, reduction of the Acronis True Image Home application. Then, after installing SSD into the laptop, use Magician app for disk management. Also, you might use another software for the cloning:Clonezilla, Macrium. I have a Samsung SSD that I recently formatted and installed Windows 7 64 bit on. I tried to use Samsung Magician software but it tells me that "Magician cannot communicate with the below Samsung SSD. Please check with other compatible storage drivers and try again. 1. Samsung SSD 840 EVO (etc)"

Upon some investigation, it appears this is because the SSD is listed as SCSI in device manager. I was wondering if there were any way to fix this so that the Samsung Magician software can communicate with the SSD

Answer:Samsung SSD listed as SCSI; Samsung Magician not working

HI

What Motherboard make and model are you using and what controller do you have the SSD plugged into as if its the Marvell (JMicron ones can also cause this) controller then that maybe your issue as at times the Marvell controller will list in Windows a SATA drive as SCSI, pita!!

So if you can swap the SSD into a Intel controller then that should fix the issue, just make sure that the drive is listed in the BIOS and as 1st boot device.

Are you running in the BIOS RAID Mode and if so that could also be a source of the issue. Really need to be if not running RAID to be in ACHI mode in the BIOS.

Now that Samsung's Magician software is finally available for Windows 10, I have my SSD running with Rapid Mode again.

I notice that the application has created a start up entry "Samsung Rapid Mode Notification Utility". This places an icon in the right corner of the Taskbar. Is this a necessary start up utility for Rapid Mode to work?

Don't have that entry you write of. Nothing on the right corner of the taskbar either. Rapid Mode is enabled and there's quite a substantial increase in performance!

1) Does Samsung Magician always need to be running to benefit from its OS optimizations/tweaks?

2) Also, what about RAPID Mode? does it also rely on Samsung Magician to work properly?

3) Is there a way to keep Samsung Magician running on startup, but not get a UAC prompt? All my other programs start with no UAC prompt so why does it need to prompt me everytime it starts?

Answer:Does Samsung Magician always need to be running?

I've only looked at the OS optimization feature. It seems to be just a front end for setting Registry values. Once the Registry values are set, Magician running or not has no effect. Depending on the Registry setting, you may have to log off or restart for it to kick in.

The UAC is probably because programs that require running as Administrator can't be run immediately at startup withput triggering UAC. There are ways around it such as creating a scheduled task. But since it doesn't need to be running for the tweaks it may be moot.

I have ordered a Samsung 840 EVO SSD and will be installing it in a few days. While looking at the manuals on Samsung's support page, I was reading the procedures for using the Magician software. After the system requirements, which my system is well over the minimums, there is a section on Driver Support. In this section, the table says that AMD chipsets are not supported.

What does this mean? I have an ASUS mobo with an AMD FX990 chipset running an FX-4300 CPU. What will not work - the Magician software, the 840 EVO SSD, or what??? I've seen plenty of reviews of this SSD and never seen any reference to not being compatible with an AMD system.

Thanks for any clarification on this.

Answer:Samsung Magician driver

I've not heard this before but you should be fine. I have a 840 running in my 990fxa/8350 no problems. I installed the magician software without issue. I have used the software and I had trouble with the auto firmware update, that's the only AMD compatibility issue I know of. Very minor technicality.

I saw this on Microsoft web site, using a hack tool to enable to Raid Mode button, click it on, reboot and voila you have Rapid Mode turned on! My C: drive had this change before/after:

Sequential Read: 562 -> 4975
Random Read 95687 -> 151673
Sequential Write 532 -> 4078
Random Write 85422 -> 68517

I am running Windows 10 Pro, Samsung 850 Pro 1 TB, Samsung Magician 4.7

Here is the hack: all it does is in the running process enable the Rapid Mode that is disabled. It makes no change to executable or any other files.

1) Download and install the latest version of ProcessHacker2 - Overview - Process Hacker
2) Open Samsung Magician and navigate to the Rapid Mode tab
3) Run ProcessHacker2 as Administrator then find and select the Samsung Magician.exe process in ProcessHacker2, right click and select Miscellaneous -> Windows
4) Search for the item listed with Samsung Magician as the text
5) Drill down and expand MDIClient
6) Find the first item SCort_ChildFrame that is not grayed out and expand it as well as it's SCort_SAT_View item
7) Right click on the Button with the text Enable and select Enabled
8) Click the Enable button in Samsung Magician!

I installed Samsung Magician to see if my SSD firmware was up to date. It is.
It's telling me that my OS is currently optimized for use with a HDD.

Answer:Let Samsung Magician optimize SSD?

I have Samsung 850 EVO but I don't use their optimization as my PC is used for my recording studio and I have it manually optimized for recording. I tried it and one thing it did was change my "Power Plan" to something I didn't want. I had to manually reset it.

If not doing anything specifically that the Magician would interfere with, I say use it.

When I did the new clean install of Windows 10 on my XPS 9530, after applying the Samsung Magician software 4.6, i noticed that I could not enable RAPID mode because the software was unable to determine my OS Version.  I did some poking around and found this Microsoft forum posting about having the similar problem with Windows 10 Preview version.
Even though Windows 10 is out and legit, it doesn't look like Samsung is ready to release an update to its software that will fix this problem.  The posting has instructions but if you rather save time reading
[Back out Samsung Magician 4.6 if you already installed it before proceeding]
1.  Install Samsung Magician 4.4 from this link (the link is from Samsung) and reboot.  IGNORE any upgrade notification you get until you have completed the next step!
2.  Enable RAPID Mode on the drive you want and reboot.  Make sure that RAPID mode is working with a speed test, you will know when its working
3.  Now perform an inplace upgrade to the software.  For me, it only updated the software to 4.5 however I have the EVO 1tb drive installed so I wanted to get the lastest, 4.6.  So I did a series of 2 upgrades.
I now have 4.6 running with RAPID Mode enabled.  The kicker is, IF I should require backing out of RAPID mode, I will be unable to reenable with the current version of 4.6.  I would have to downgrade and start these steps all over again.  However in the enti... Read more

Running W10 pro on a desktop PC with two Samsung SSD EVO850 drives. Samsung Magician is installed and Over Provisioning is set on both SSD's. I have also set the OS Optimisation options and Rapid mode on the boot drive in Magician.

If I use CCleaner to disable Magician in the start up programs list, will I lose these apparent benefits, or can I safely disable Magician in Start Up programs?

Theory - I will seldom if ever use Magician after making these settings so it is merely wasting resources if it is just loading every time I start the PC for the heck of it.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Samsung Magician - Start up option

You'll be ok. It will just disable the system try icon from loading at startup. You will then just need to go to all apps menu if you need to open it, to do anything.

Can anyone please tell me how do I turn the defrag and optimize back on?

I need some help.
I am running Win 8 Pro.
My set up has 2 x 650 GB WD Black hard drives and a Samsung 840 (non pro) for the boot drive.

I have run the latest Samsung Magician, however the BIG problem is that it has stopped the windows 8 Defrag program.

I reinstalled Win 8 and all was OK, (now for the bit about me being thick -- ) I thought I would try the old version of Samsung Magician, and Bu**er me if has not only done the same thing again, turned off defrag and optimize, I am just unable to open defrag in order to defrag my WD drives.

I do not really want to reinstall Windows 8 again unless I have to, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that someone knows how to switch defrag bag on again.

Thanks in advance
Syd

Answer:HELP - Samsung Magician has stopped defrag

Hi there
Don't DEFRAG an SSD --just THINK for a minute --what does defrag attempt to do. It basically tries to re-arrange the files so the bits of it are all next to each other rather than spread all over the disk.

This is 100% irrelevant in SSD's since there are NO moving parts so access time in spinning the disk to read all the bits of the file into storage is NOT an issue with an SSD.

In fact these days it's rarely if ever necessary to defrag a spinner either --just back it up (image it) with something like Acronis and restore it again. Unless you are deliberately doing a sector by sector dump and restore the disk will be "re-arranged" automatically by the restore program.

I just upgraded Magician to v4.3.
It's the first time I've looked at the program in many months. I made some choices when I first installed the SSD, but I'm wondering about some of these now.

Program: Do you allow Magician to run at startup? Reasons?

Over Provisioning: Do you enable this? Why?

Rapid Mode: Do you enable this? Why?

Firmware Update: Do you bother doing a full backup before updating the firmware?

Thanks for any instruction or opinions.

I'm trying to get everything right this time. I have been doing a clean install of windows 8.1. So far so good thanks to your help. Now I've got all the motherboard, Sound card, Video Card, Asrock, drivers installed from disk and updated. I've gone through the windows update. All cool. Made a restore point, and Now just installed Eset Smart Security 7. Now I see that I haven't installed Samsung Digital Magician that came with the SSD 840 EVO. Should I install this now before I go any further? I know that I installed it on my first complete install in April, but of course I screwed up with a refresh a few days ago, then finally I just did a clean install last night of Windows 8.1. My next step was to Install Acronis and slowly adding all my software to get me going again.

Answer:Samsung Digital Magician for 840 EVO when to install?

It's not required but sort of nice to have. Install it at any time.

I installed it when I first added my Samsung SDD 840 EVO 250GB then uninstalled it once everything was running good. I reinstalled it again a few weeks back to check something and decided to leave it installed. Just ran it now and it updated to ver 4.4.No need to allow it to auto-start though. Just delete the link in your Startup folder once it's installed.

I recently installed a Samsung 840 EVO 500GB SSD. I checked first off and TRIM is on. However, when I run the Magician it tells me that my OS(7 x64) doesn't support TRIM. Is it telling me that it doesn't now because Samsung is in charge? Any ideas? Thank you.

Answer:Samsung Magician and TRIM message

See this page for instructions on checking if TRIM is enabled in Windows 7 (use the fsutil method):

Verify That TRIM Is Enabled In Windows 7 | gHacks Technology News

About Samsung "Magician", it purposely interferes with sleep and should NEVER be left running. It's easy to miss, hidden in the notification area as it will be when you close the program. (That's why the default should be "always show" for new icons.) I wrote about the BSOD it caused me here, which was the first BSOD I've seen in several years:

It was a strange day - BSOD, Samsung Magician, Intel RST, hybrid sleep... - [H]ard|Forum

After you finish with it, visit the system tray and close it through its icon. It does not install drivers or leave any services running, so it's safe to use as long as you remember to close it for real. Here are a couple of supporting messages about Magician and sleep, both occurring in threads where people discuss BSODs and attribute it to "Magician":

[SOLVED] ntoskrnl.exe - Tech Support Forum
Samsung SSD Magician - Overclockers UK Forums

Now if you take the Samsung claims about sleep seriously, I'd recommend secure-erasing the drive and exchanging it for something else.

The only reason I have to run Magician is to use its optimizer function, which does a manual TRIM, which I find necessary to do immediately after encrypting a system drive with TrueCrypt. While TrueCrypt doesn't block TRIM on partitions within the scope of system encryption... Read more

Just wanted to post a PSA warning for Firmware Updates through Magician, some are breaking SSD Drives, its been going on for at least a month with no resolution from Samsung yet except to RMA broken Drives which now stutter and Pause during use , apparently the Firmware can't be downgraded from my reading but I have not tried it personally ....

so DO NOT install the latest Firmware offered by Magician, especially on the latest 960 Evo or Pro Drives , without Checking the Samsung Forums 1st ..... they are having to RMA Drives currently broken by the latest 3B7Qxxxx Firmwares....
these firmware's are only available though Magician not from the Download site currently.

I don't personally have anymore Information for you , those "in the know" please add anything you can on the Matter, thx.

friends I'm installing a fresh samsung 840 120gb. i thought i could put the ssd on sata 1 [not zero] and get firmware via magician on my windows 8 lab mule. no dice. apparently magician ONLY wants to see the ssd on sata zero. it can pull up the drive, but none of the controls work.
soooo... I'm thinking I'm going to have to go with the drive 'as is' to install 7 on a notebook, then as first order of business go pickup the firmware update and execute it.

will this result in sub-par arrangement? best I can tell the fw update is non-destructive.
is there another way?

Answer:samsung ssd: will firmware update harm anything? magician no use.

friends i have a new samsung 840 to replace a failing drive in a hp notebook.
i wanted to update the samsung firmware first, then do the install of windows 7 x64 but using the samsung so-called Magician, trying the drive on sata 1 [instead of 0] it still cannot properly register the drive. all I get is the SMART info - everything else is neutered. illogical... how does samsung want to update firmware? AFTER the os is installed?
a little guidance would sure be appreciated.

So I installed my new SSD, set up all my programs and files, and was having some trouble with discovering an ACHI drivers (which apparently cannot be achieved on my dell latitude model IDE ATA/ATAPI driver missing?)

Anyway after installing the Samsung Magician software to help optimize the SSD, it said that a firmware update was available, so upon updating I was rewarded with a BSOD after restarting. I became angry and did a system restore with my image disk and started over. This time in the samsung magician it said the firmware was already up to date so I didn;t think anything of it until today another BSOD. If I have to do another reinstall I will take my own life, so I hope someone can help me here.

For several months, I have had Samsung Magician 4.97 installed on my P70's Windows 7 and Windows 10  boot drives -- both are original Lenovo-suppled and installed 512 GB Samsung NVMe drives.  This utility offered limited functionality, simply recognizing the drives and allowing them to be benchmarked, tested and described but nothing else.  No ability to update firmware, adjust caching or over-provision the drives.  Moreover, Lenovo has previously not responded to my posted queries regarding how to update the firmware on these units, as they are out of sync -- one of the devices has a much older rev. level than the other and I dare not try to set-up a RAID array under these conditions. I was hoping the newly released Ver. 5.00 of Magician would remedy this.  However, circumstances have become worse, as the utility does not even "see" the two NVMe drives. Does anyone else have experience with 5.00 or a potential fix to the firmware update issue?  Any insights or opinions would be appreciated.

I don't have the Advanced tab on my Magician either.

My version is Product Version 4.5.1.0 & the File Version is 4.5.1.65. So far I have not received an update but it may come through soon.
I found the product Version by Right Clicking on the Magician short cut on my Desk Top & select Open File Location which should show the Samsung Magician Application, Right Click on that & select Properties then select the Details Tab & it will show the Version.

I have an SSD with the Samsung Magician 4.9.5 software. I am a Windows Insider on the Fast Ring so you all know how often we get updates. Recently I opened this software to check that it was set up correctly, in the past there were things that would change on an update.
When I opened it up under the new build 14267 I saw this:

If you notice the Health Status is blank. Furthermore the state of "Smart" showed this:

This shows there are problems with the drive. I ran CrystalDisk and a few other programs and found out the drive was OK.

I then decided to rebuild the computer and go back to the last ".iso" build 10586 1511 (111215). I reinstalled Samsung Magician 4.9.5. and these were the results:
After the rebuild I haven't changed this to "Get Insider Builds" through windows update. I wanted to post this and see if others ran into this before I start the update process. I am going to try and narrow it down to the upgrade that broke this software.

Answer:Samsung Magician 4.9.5 - Not Working Win10 build 12467

This is why I don't use Insider on my main desktop but test it in vmware instead.

You could try uninstalling Magician, run ccleaner, then install 4.9 and then 4.9.5 over it. Magician is working fine for me in Stable Windows 10.

Getting h/w encryption on my laptop has been a bit of a nightmare, but I thought I had it working.... Here is what I did:

Installed M.2 Samsung 850 evo driveInstalled samsung magician, and set Encryption to Ready to Enable.Removed existing HDDRan samsung secure erase from DVD.Installed Win10Installed Samsung Magician (It said Encryption enabled, finally!)Turned on Bitlocker. It did not prompt me for how much of the drive to encrypt, which (I was told) means that it is using hardware encryption of the drive.Added the HDD back.Updated all my drivers to latest versions for my laptop (Asus GL552VW), including Intel RST drivers (14.x)

After doing all that I just noticed that BitLocker is turned off on my C: drive (the m.2 drive)! I looked in Magician and it still says Encryption is enabled. So I went into Bitlocker to turn it on again for the drive. But now it is prompting me to encrypt used space, or whole disk, which means it isn't using h/w encryption.

What am I doing wrong here? Do I need to enable Secure Boot in BIOS? I have read that the Intel RST drivers can cause problems, but I thought that was only with older versions? Is IRST still an problem?

Edit: When I look in the Disk Management took, I see the C: partition of Disk 1 says: NTFS(Bitlocker Encrypted)., But in Bitlocker Drive Encryption tool it says it is off. Manage-BDE -status c: says that there is no encryption. Really confused now.

Answer:Bitlocker turned itself off, Samsung Magician Says Encryption enabled

There are a list of requirements for hardware based encryption here - doesn't look like secure boot is required: How to Enable BitLocker Hardware Encryption with SSDs Helge Klein

For data drives:
The drive must be in an uninitialized state.
The drive must be in a security inactive state.

If the drive is used as a startup drive the following apply additionally:
The computer must always boot natively from UEFI.
The computer must have the Compatibility Support Module (CSM) disabled in UEFI.
The computer must be UEFI 2.3.1 based and have the EFI_STORAGE_SECURITY_COMMAND_PROTOCOL defined.

I only use bitlocker with software based encryption though so can't add to what they say I'm afraid but some of the comments look interesting.

Hi all,
I have a lovely Dell Precision T7600 that is still quite the beast. It's got a Samsung EVO 850 as the main OS drive. It boots up fine as I currently have cleared my RAID configuration and I will perhaps redo that at some point (it's not critical). Anyway, I want to run Samsung's Magician software but it can't see the drive...
Anyone else have this experience or these difficulties?

Answer:Dell Precision T7600 upgraded with Samsung EVO 850 SSD - Magician can't see drive

I have a PC with a Samsung EVO 850 (1 TB) and a Samsung EVO 840 (500 GB) and the Magician finds them without problems.  Actually, the Magician finds all the drives, SSD and conventional hard drive.
However, other than to check the "health" of the drives and firmware version, I don't find anything else useful.  There was a discussion about the Magician on the tenforums.com and that was the general consensus there.
However, the drive should be detected.  Are you using the latest Magician Version?  5.0.0
Two suggestions, run as "Administrator" (even if you are the Administrator) and if that doesn't work, uninstall the Magician program, RESTART THE PC, then reinstall it.

So I ordered two 1 TB Samsung 840 Evo SSD and am waiting for delivery in 10 days.

Currently, I have a 256 GB LiteOn SSD + 1 TB Seagate 5400 RPM HDD

The way I have them currently setup

C: (256 GB SSD) over provisioned by 30% here I have the OS installed, programs, and 2 games

D : (1 TB HDD): has my dropbox folder, docs, pics, music, videos, download folder

So what would you recommend now? keeping my SSD partitioned into 1 750 GB (after over provisioning) seems a bit too much right?

I really am confused on what is best, to split the first SSD into C and D and put my dropbox and other folders on it and leave the 2nd SSD empty to prolong its life? or put everything on the 2nd SSD?

Don't know

please advice

also, I should OP both SSDs by 30% right?

I am gonna enable RAPID on the first one since I have 32 GB of RAM

Answer:Best way to setup my 2 Samsung 840 EVO 1 TB SSDs?

lol, I thought my specs were overkill

I would love to advise you, but as just one 1 TB Samsung 840 Evo SSD would cost me $680 in Australia, I can't.
I figured a 250Gb SSD would suffice as I have enough drives to compensate everything else. If the OS drive goes, so does everything on it, hence my keeping it separate.
Main reason I replied is so I can watch your progress on this question. Good luck.

Apparently without fanfare, Samsung is releasing both 2TB EVOs and 2TB Pros. The EVO is supposed to be available 7/22/2015. Newegg is already accepting preorders for it for $800. Newegg also lists the Pro but hasn't announced a release date or price and isn't taking preorders yet.

While the price is still too steep for this old lady's blood (and budget!), it's a trend I find very encouraging. 500GB EVOs are already available on sale from time to time for almost half of what I paid for my first one two or three years ago. 4TB SSDs are available for consumer sale already (albeit at gut wrenching prices) and I saw a 6TB SSD being announced in a magazine recently. I was skeptical when an Intel official predicted earlier this year that we would be seeing 10TB SSDs within two years but, now, I'm not so skeptical. We may even see 10TB broached before the end of the year.

Widespread bug FYI - https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/foru....cfm?t=2556634 - see UPDATE paragraph at bottom!
Just after I updated my Asus laptop from Windows 10 1511 to Windows 10 1607 (1 year anniversary update) a virus was detected by Windows Defender, so I immediately shut down and performed a reformat via Windows-10-install USB stick, as I was going to reformat anyway. I wish I noted down now what it detected because i've had an issue since.
Samsung Magician v4.9.7 now reports 'AHCI mode disabled/deactivated' and 'unable to detect SATA' (I use a Samsung 850 PRO SSD). After much testing, I found what makes it report this is when in my Asus laptop UEFI BIOS I have 'secure boot' enabled. When secure boot in BIOS is disabled, AHCI mode and SATA detect reports working normally again.

Hello everyone. I wanted to run an idea by you to make sure I do not hit a wall. I am planning to order W540 with RAID0 and regular 500GB HDDs (cheapest RAID0 option) Then upon laptop arrival I would like to swap factory installed HDDs (I will use them for backups) with two 256GB Samsung 840 Pro. Are there any flaws in this plan? I am mostly concerned if RAID controller is same as if I ordered RAID0 with SSDs from the factory and I would not lose SATA3 speed etc and if 840 Pros will actually work in this setup at all? Thank you for your help.

Answer:W540 RAID0 with Samsung 840 Pro SSDs

If you order the RAID-enabled W540 that specifically comes with RAID0 and 2x HDDs, that should work fine.  I've read on the forum where other users have done exactly that.

What definitely won't work is ordering a single-HDD non-RAID W540 and then try to enable RAID later.

Hello all, this is my first post here although i have had my z800 for over 5 years, its a dual x5690, 32GB ram and a quadro 6000, for a while i have had 4 samsung 840 pro 128GB drives set in raid0 using the Intel Raid, and only now decided to tacle the issue i am having... here is the setup  I know they are connected to Sata2 ports so only get 50% the speed, but 4 in raid 0 should be getting arroun 800-1000MB/s and I am only getting the following... AS SSD Results.  Crystaldisk results.  I can't for the life of me figure out what is wrong... I have spent months searching and nada... Any ideas or help would be humungously appreciated! Many thanks Anthony Kyriazis / Greece

Hi - I bought a Samsung 840 Pro and installed with my W8 upgrade - clean install.  One reason I bought it was the Encryption feature built into the 840 Pro.  However, being unfamiliar with this feature, and not seeing anything in the documentation or in the Samsung Magician optimization software I called Samsung .  They said I would enable the data encryption feature through my BIOS. I looked in the X220 BIOS set up and discussed with him the entry under Security/Password entitled:  Hard Disk 1 password (Enable/Disable).  He said probably by enabling the Hard Disk 1 password feature - that this would then enable the resident encryption feature built into the SSD.  The X220 user manual (p. 92) says if this feature is enabled that you will have to enter the password when you boot your computer.  I don't know if this is just the first time you boot or if it will be every time. Anyway - wanting to see if anyone else has gone through the effort to enable SSD encryption feature of the Samsung 840 Pro or any other SSD with its own encryption.  Also - does anyone know how to verify if the disk is encrypted once it is supposedly enabled?   Kent

Answer:Enabling SSD Encryption in BIOS for Samsung 840 Pro or SSDs

Hey there Kent1968,

Unfortunately I cannot shed much light on Samsung 840 Pro, but I can tell you that by enabling the Hard Disk Password you will be required to enter the password after every time the machine is completely powered off. I have seen in various forums that Hardware encryption is enabled by assigning a "HDD Password" in the bios with the Samsung 840 Pro SSD, but I have not been able to confirm. I hope that this gives some guidance to what you are looking to accomplish. Good luck!

System: Dell XPS 8300, i7-2600, 3.4 GHz, 16 GByte memory running Windows 10 PRO. Currently the boot device is a Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB. The motherboard is a Dell 0y2mrg containing an H67 Express Sata/6 controller(chipset). The performance is very good, particularly with Rapid mode(a disk caching app by Samsung) enabled. There is a secondary 1 TB hard drive which is used as storage for less active files. The graphics has been replaced with an NVidia 750 GTX with two HDMI outputs. I have to admit this is a quick system, my major uses are using Excel with large files(5-100 MB) and number crunching. I've decided not to replace the CPU or MBoard until one or the other fails, thinking i7-6800. I run an incremental Acronis backup every day with full saves every 20 days.

I'd like to add another Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB to this system and run both together in raid 0 and use the raid structure as the boot device. I already own the second 850 EVO. My major motivation is capacity, followed by speed. I should have purchased a 1 TB SSD but didn't.

Can anyone direct me to the literature that explains how to implement raid 0 with Windows 10 PRO? I realize the entire conversion process may involve a lot of moving stuff around and so forth. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Glen

Answer:Help installing raid 0 using Samsung 850 EVO SSDs on Dell XPS 8300

Most likely, it would involve a clean install. Your first step is to check the BIOS to see if it is supported. I was going to make the case to not even bother with RAID0 with SSDs, but if your BIOS doesn't support it, I would avoid software RAID at all costs.

Samsung releases 470 Series SSDs featuring 30nm flash
By Jose Vilches, TechSpot.com
Published: August 24, 2010, 10:09 AM EST
Samsung has quietly begun shipping a new range of solid-state drives featuring the company's latest 30nm multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory and a multi-core controller chip built in-house. The 470 series just became available in the U.S. via Newegg.com in 64, 128, and 256GB capacities with prices of $160, $320, and $600, respectively.

According to the company's spec sheet, the new series can handle sequential read rates of 250MB/s, sequential writes up to 220MB/s, and are capable of up to 31,000 IOPS (Input-output operations
per second) during random reads and 21,000 IOPS for random writes. As it is often the case, however, the lower capacity model is a little slower than the other two. The 64GB drive is only rated for 170MB/s sequential writes and 11,000 IOPS during random writes.

Other than that they all share the same features, including a 2.5-inch brushed aluminum casing with orange accents, a SATA 3Gbps interface, TRIM support, a MTBF (mean time before failure) of 1.5 million hours, resistance to shocks of up to 1500G, and a three-year warranty.

The full Samsung spec sheet is here...

So: what do you think? Anyone tried these yet? Pros, cons, yeas and nays appreciated...

Hi all,Does anti-malware software pose any known threats to the health/longevity of solid state drives? Thanks in advance,r0d3r1ck

Answer:Anti-malware Software and SSDs

They shouldn't, not by running scans anyway. SSDs do have a limit on the number of times a memory cell can be written to but not on the number of times the cell can be read from (which is 99% of the disk access for a scan.)

Samsung updated my Tab2 7 and now Adobe Flash which i had installed and working previously will not play web downloads. I have updated to the latest Flash player for Android from version 11.1.115.36 to 11.1.115.69 but this has made no difference. I have also checked for solutions on web and installed several browser plugins suggested but these don't seem to work. Unfortunately I use my Tab for a study course which has video content which I now cannot use. Has anybody else had this problem and if so found a solution?

Answer:Samsung Tab2 Flash player stopped working after samsung software update

I don't use Android any more but my understanding is that Flash is no longer supported by Android. Your course designers should be moving away from Flash. I assume from your post that you have tried this installation. If that doesn't work then I'm sorry but I'm stuck. If the course is viewed using the browser then you could try Puffin browser see Flash on Android

installed samsung 205bw software e1705 primary screen blank samsung became primaryLaptop is a Seco Epson 17.2 inch monitor, blacked out when we installed the drivers for the samsung 205Bw - Samsung to be secondary monitor is now ONLY monitor - no laptop even on batteries!  Laptop is a Dell Inspiron E1705 with nVidia 7800, 2 gig RAM -  can't 'see' the BIOs to correct the settings- total frustration.I know - should have used plug-n-play, what can I say - we were tired & brains OFF.  The samsung works fine as secondary monitor on our other laptop (no drivers installed - used plug-n-play).HELP - Samsung says it was a plug-n-play monitor (but doesn't say on paperwork), Dell says 'send it in & we'll fix it - for a fee', nVidia says they only make the chip set - Dell makes the video card.  My, aren't  we all covered - except this dumb customer....nosliw in deep dew-dew

Answer:installed samsung 205bw software e1705 primarry screen blank samsung became prim

I'm back with a sad tale, have sent the machine back to Dell twice.  First time they installed a new screen only (charged for screen & mb).  At this point we'd uped our service contract, 3 year guarantee on the whole machine (charge @$299). Machine came back and d__ thing blue screened me 10 or 12 times within 2 weeks, found someone to track what was really done, ie no new mb installed so got ready to send it back again.  When the packing box arrived there was an extra box - & in it was a NEW screen & a NEW motherboard - what, is this now a do-it-yourself repair?  Sent both boxes back , one to repair station the other to where ever it came from...  It's been maybe 3 weeks and yesterday I had 2 blue screens...  will this never cease.  Tried to check on my service - online there's no record of us having extended warranty --  Time to get paperwork straight etcOh, and did I mention, machine hasn't supported 2 screens since first 'fix'?....  Pam - I feel a cold winter coming...

After installing Samsung Touch Supporter on my non-samsung PC,I get this:

"This Program only runs on a Samsung PC.
Program will terminate."

I try to use some of the software that came with the Samsung Series 7 PC.
I will not let me open the program.
I have an Archos 9 PC and would like to use it.

Can anyone make it so that I can install this software on any other PC?
Sometimes it's a simple edit, can anyone look in to this?

Software can be downloaded from the Samsung website here(it's under manuals & downloads/software):
Support - Tablet PCs XE700T1A | Samsung Tablet PCs

May you please attempt to fix Play Touch App (Software) (ver.1.0.0.33),Play Touch Luancher (Software) (ver.1.2.0.32), and Touch Supporter (Software) (ver.1.2.0.10)

Note: Play Touch Laucher says the same message as above, but still manages to open, Touch Supporter does not though

Answer:Samsung Series 7 software on non-Samsung PC.

That software is only licensed to use on the Samsung PC it came on, so I don't know why you would expect it to work on any other PC.

Samsung is also the most difficult model to get the OEM software to work after a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which is entirely legal and recommended for most users of preinstalled Windows to get the best Win7 performance.

But for Samsung it's especially important to back up the Recovery Image and make a secondary Win7 backup image so that if any features are missing after Clean Reinstall and the Samsung software won't work correctly, you can set it back to factory condition.

I want to purchase a Samsung DVD burner from newegg..most reviews on the site from the past week mention that software is included, some say there is none included. I called and they claim that no software is included with OEM drives. I dont know what to believe. I dont want to buy this and have to spend $60+ on software. Whats the deal?

Answer:OEM Samsung software?

Buy it. Good drive. Use free software, or buy Nero or CD Creator or Roxio at www.clickcooldeals.com or wwwdirectdeals.com. Often as cheap as $5.00 to $12.
You might want to download the firmware and software updates afterward.

I have a Samsung YP3-U3J QB/XEU mp3 player which I have not used for some time, but now I have gone back to it. I now find that the EmoDio software does not even work. The EmoDio badge box appears on my screen, and it is otherwise unresponsive. In fact, in order to close the badge box, I have to do a restart. Is there any way that I can download mp3 music on to my player as I used to, or is it obsolete? It is three years old. When I connect the player, it does not appear on my list of computer discs, otherwise I could drag and drop. This does not seem to be possible Allan.
